>Welcome back to a Song of Sand and Steel, the Game of Thrones narrative game. Our House is House Blacksand, a new house in the Dornish Marches, who are much despised by their neighbours. Our Lady is Lissara Blacksand, a beautiful femme fatale, who is a dab hand with a spear. We are currently about to attempt to retake the ruin of Vulture's Roost from soldiers who have captured it, with our Hubby's brother and the allied soldiers we've gathered

>This is a quest using the Green Ronin A Song of Ice and Fire RPG system.

>With you

"Ser Cortnay will command, with Ser Darvin leading our infantry. Ser Cletus, you'll lead your men of course, and Carth, you stay with the Engineers, and Ser Nestar will ride with me and the Cavalry."

The knights nod, and Cortnay grins.

"Should be fun. We'll start with a bombardment by the scorpions and the catapult, see if we can't spook them out. If they emerge, the infantry will hold, and the cavalry will sweep them from behind. If they hunker down, the Blacksand infantry will advance with the Turtle, and force an entrance. The Yronwood infantry will follow up, and the cavalry will look to find a different way in, and try to flank them. Everyone, brief your sergeants, and we'll gather when we reach the Roost."

The knights acknowledge their instructions, and move down the column, calling out names. Ser Nestar sidles up closer to you, and clears his throat.

"My lady, I know you want me with you, but I'd ask you put me with the infantry, under Ser Darvins command. I can't really use this" he says, touching the greatsword on his back "from horseback. And I'm more comfortable on foot, I'd love to break the lines with this.."

"Ser Nestar, why don't you like the cavalry? You dismounted yesterday to fight as well, even though you have a longsword."

Ser Nestar taps his fingers on the saddle pommel, before beginning to speak in a quiet voice.

"It's not just that I prefer my greatsword. I was serving as a guard for a Lysene silver convoy, traveling to Myr. Volantis was trying to take the orange coast from Lys at the time, and we came under attack by a group of cataphracts, from Volantis. The other sellswords I was with fled, and I found myself alone against the cataphracts charge. I was trampled, and hearing a cavalry charge, I sometimes freeze up. I'm fine in battle, if I know I'm not being charged, but it's not the best for me..."

"Well, I'll not force you. Report to Ser Darvin, and follow his orders."

Ser Nestar nods thankfully to you, and rides off, moving to where Ser Darvin is speaking with the sergeants of your house Infantry. You move up to the House Penrose cavalry, and introduce yourself, and inspect them. They look less experienced than your cavalry, but seem competent. They are enthused to know Ser Cortnay is commanding, and are keen to undertake their roll as flankers in the battle.

You explain to them that Ser Cortnay wants you to find another way in to Vulture's Roost, once the infantry has engaged, and flank the main battleline, dealing with any supporting units and disrupting the command. The cavalry nod their understanding, and you settle in for the ride to Vulture's Roost.

--------------------
The sun is shining into your eyes as you approach Vulture's Roost. Banners are hanging from the more intact towers, showing a white crowned skull on a black background, declaring allegiance to House Manwoody. Ser Cortnay has the force move past the ruin, and set up west of it, putting the early evening sun at your backs, as the engineers set up 3 scorpions and the catapult. He gathers you and the knights together, and grins.

"We'll need to offer them terms first, but we can make it so ridiculous that they refuse, or we can offer them safe passage back to Kingsgrave, and try to avoid a battle. Who knows, we might get lucky and they'll surrender unconditionally. We'll at least get an idea of their numbers at the parley, since they'll have most of their captains there, to match our numbers. Lady Lissara, this is your land, how should we approach it?"

"I think we'll call for the surrender of their weapons and armour. I've got some other ideas, but that can wait."

Ser Cortnay grins, and the 6 of you walk forward, Ser Darvin holding a banner. You stop 150 yards from the castle walls, and before long, you see a small group of men approaching, carrying a Manwoody banner. As they come closer, you can see 3 men, wearing armour, though one is carrying a crossbow, while the other two are carrying shields on their arm. As they get closer, Ser Cortnay raises his hand, and the two parties stare at each other, 10 yards apart. One of the shield wearing men steps forward.

"I am Ser Gordar Tate, in service of House Manwoody, in command of the ruin of Vulture's Roost, rightful land of House Manwoody, seized a day ago from the invasive and unrightful Lady Blacksand. We understand you are here to discuss terms, Ser?" he says, looking at Ser Cortnay. Ser Cortnay grins, and waves towards you.

"Address the Lady Blacksand, it's her land you invaded."

"No need to repeat yourself, Ser Gordar, I heard you clearly. I am willing to forget this trespass, and allow your men to leave with their lives. However, you will hand over your weapons and armour, and House Manwoody will pay restitution of 1000 dragons for this act of unprovoked aggression. All commanders will be held as prisoners till a proper peace has been established."

A silence falls, broken only by quiet sniggering from Ser Cletus. Ser Gordar glares at you, and spits on the ground.

"That is my answer, Butcher's girl. I'll hang you from the walls for a few days, then we'll see who will be in a place to surrender."

The three men turn, and march away, as Ser Cortnay glares at Ser Cletus.

"That was hardly fitting behavior, Ser Cletus. Even if we are trying to provoke them, we should try to be noble about it."

Ser Cletus shrugs, and the 6 of you return to your lines. The engineers have finished assembling the weapons, and stand ready. The knights move to their units, and Ser Darvin's squire leads his and Ser Nestar's horses to the rear. You sit ready with the cavalry, as Ser Cortnay is handed a set of Myrish lenses by an engineer, and wait as he stares at the wall.

"Crossbowmen in the tower, infantry in the gap in the wall. Not sure how many, but no more than 400 men. Catapult, target the tower, scorpions, target the infantry, soften them up, and keep those crossbowmen's heads down."

Carth raises an arm, and brings it down, and with a creak and several thuds, the engines begin firing. Rocks crash into the tower, and bolts arc towards the clusters of barely visible infantry, as the Blacksand infantry move under the turtle, and prepare to move.

The stones smash into the walls, and the bolts land out of sight, but no cries ring out. The engineers look concerned, and begin to adjust the engines, as Carth takes the lenses from his brother, staring at the tower. He waves the scorpions to re-aim. As the turtle begins to crawl forward. They cross distance, and you hear bolts begin to thud into the wood, as Cortnay rides towards you.

"Take the cavalry now, the artillery did poorly so we'll need you to make a serious difference. We can't fire at the infantry anymore, only those Archers."

You lead the cavalry back down the road, safely out of bolt range, and begin to circle around the ruin, looking for large enough gaps in the wall for the cavalry to ride through in numbers.

11, 10, 9 vs TN 12

You and your men stare at the wall, but only see small gaps, barely enough for a single horseman, not enough to allow a proper charge. You hear thuds continuing, but no cries ring out, except the slow chanting of your infantry. Suddenly, Carth's voice breaks the dusk, but you cannot make out his call. You do hear the creak and thuds of the engines firing again, as you ride further on, looking for more gaps in the wall, as you hear the crash of missiles hitting stone...

> 9,11,14 vs TN 9 (2 Degrees of success)

You catch site of a breach in the walls, a large wide gap, wide enough for at least 5 horsemen to ride through at a time. Even better, you can see the back of an infantry unit, the Manwoody banner flying above them. Several cries of pain ring out, and a loud crash reaches your ears, sounding like a small avalanche. A loud battlecry follows, clearly from Ser Nestar, and it is taken up by more voices.

"BLACKSANDS, BLACK HEARTS! CHARGE!!!!"

You hear the clashing of steel, and the sound of battle being joined. The infantry unit you can see raises their shields, and begin to move forward, but do not look like they have been engaged yet.

You thunder through the breach in the wall, the cavalry's spears lowering, and you slam into the rear of the Manwoody Infantry. You drive deep into the ranks of them, scattering them before you, as you hear Ser Gordar's voice calling out for them to rally. You can see him, standing holding the Manwoody banner, his voice cutting through the clamour of battle. Beyond him, you can see Ser Nestar behind the front line of another unit of infantry, swinging his greatsword in huge arcs, as infantrymen try to dart forward, and stab at him, but most of their blows skate off his armour. Your infantry are pressing, trying to join him, and you see Ser Darvin smashing his longax onto the shields of the Manwoody infantry. Up in the tower, you can see several pieces of masonry have fallen, and crossbowmen are huddled against the wall, trying to reload, glancing towards where the rest of your forces are.

>>

You only have the boar spear with you, thats how I'm doing it. Each combat, you choose what load-out you have, and that's all your horse can carry.
>>
>>2877968
>Dismount, pick up your boar spear from the ground?
>Call for his surrender?
>>
>>2877970
If combat was a more narrative affair I would try to intentionally snap the tip off so he'd have the head stuck in his body and nothing he could grab at with his gauntlets. Or you know, aim for the head or throat. But it's all about dice and QM has to write around the results and make a setup that will allow the next round to make sense. It's not always going to be smart or cinematic

Finish him!

Sliding down the side of your horse, you walk over to infront of him, where he is slowly breathing. You kick your spear up into your hand, and spin it around your body, before extending it to his throat. You tilt your head to the side, and look at him, as his eyes raise to meet yours.

"Ser Gordar, I call for your surrender. Of you and your men."

He looks like he is going to lunge for you, before his head falls forward, and he slumps.

"I yield. I yield."

With that, he slumps on his side, gasping in pain. You remount, and turn to see how the rest of the battle is progressing...

The Yronwood infantry has rushed up, and with their support, your infantry has broken through, and Ser Darvin and Ser Nestar are standing over the broken body of the other knight commander you met, while your cavalry are scattering the infantry you charged. Swords are dropped, and the archers are throwing their crossbows down from the tower, calling out their surrender. The commander of the crossbowmen throws his helmet down, along with the Manwoody flag that was flying from the tower. It appears you are victorious!

>Athletics 4 (Increase damage and defense)

Ser Cortnay walks slowly into the ruin, followed by the engineers and Carth. He looks around, and at the grins of your infantry. He sees Ser Gordar, who is being slowly lifted up, and at your men who are gathering the crossbows up. Two of the engineers begin removing the spears, only causing a small amount of extra damage.
>Ser Gordar takes an injury!

"Well, Lady Lissara, you've done well for yourself. Good charge, and once the engineers fixed their aim, those archers didn't last long."

Carth grins.
"They claimed it was because we provided "New rope" so it was too taught for their calculations. I pointed out it simply meant they'd be more powerful, and they mumbled and shut up."

Carth looks at Ser Gordan, and at the three huge holes in him, raising his eyebrows.
"He may be our enemy, but goddamn the man is tough..."

Nodding, you return his sword to him, to which he nods in thanks, reluctantly. The captain of Archers has his sword returned as well, as he mounts a riding horse, and moves behind the Penrose Cavalry. Seeing him do this, Ser Cortnay walks over to you, a somewhat apologetic look on his face.

"I hate to do this, but since it was my artillery that forced him to cower and surrender, I'd like to claim his ransom. You can keep Ser Gordar, he's yours by rights, but the archer captain, I'd like to claim him. And don't try to argue Carth did it, because I was next to him the whole time, and I was in charge of this whole thing."

Carth rolls his eyes and looks at you...

"Of course, Ser Cortnay. Now, shall we encamp? I doubt Ser Gordar can be moved tonight, and we all need to rest."

Ser Cortnay bows to you, and your men begin to make camp. Fortunately, there are plenty of supplies and tents left by the Manwoody soldiers. Ser Gordar is silent, eating slowly and in pain. The next day dawns, and the force packs up, and returns to Shadowpeak, and when you arrive back, you find it as you left it, with Ser Ascar watching from the walls, and Elia, Calrin and Cerran running out to meet you as you and Carth dismount. Hugging your children, you introduce them to Ser Cortnay, who is seemingly surprised by the number of children, glancing at Carth as Elia curtsies, and Calrin asks how big Storms End is.

Ser Gordar is placed in a cell, and you and the knights retire to the main hall, where you all raise a goblet of wine to your victory. Maester Borrel spends some time checking the supplies brought back from the battle, and brings you a list, showing you that you captured nearly a full unit's worth of crossbows, and several dozen sets of armour and swords.

>Gain 1 Power

"Maester Borrel, do treat him. He may have been rude to me, but that's no reason to throw away a good ransom."

Maester Borrel bows, and hurries away, heading to collect his Maesters kit. Spirits are high in the hall, with Ser Ascar being told the tale of the battle by Ser Cletus, Ser Darvin and Ser Nestar, while Carth and Ser Cortnay argue over some small story from their childhood. After throwing his hands up, Carth turns to you.

"What are you planning to do now? The Cavalry will need time to recover, and I'm not certain the cavalry from my Father will be impressive or dangerous enough to keep you safe. I know the children would appreciate some time with you, they've not spent more than a few hours with you for several weeks. We're ramping up to a fight now, me and Cortnay can go to House Selmy and House Dondarrion, we'll do better anyway, given our heritage. Take some time for yourself, spend some time with the twins and Elia, and get ready for the battles to come."

The next few days pass without too much incident, though far quicker than you would have liked. You rode with Elia down to the port and back, her sitting in-front of you as you control the horse, Jelissa does a shadow puppet show for you and the children, and begins to teach Elia how to braid her hair, and the twins are given two wooden swords and shields from Ser Cortnay, before he leaves with Carth to go to Harvest Hall. Ser Ascar shows them some very basic swings, and they dedicate about half a day to trying to do the move, before they decide hitting the other's shield as hard as possible is far more fun. It has been 5 days when you are called to the wall. A pair of riders are standing outside the gate, bearing both a white banner and the banner of House Manwoody.

"Lady Lissara Blacksand, sometimes called the Butcher's Daughter, I am Ser Myles Manwoody, brother of Lord Dagos Manwoody, here to negotiate the ransoming of Ser Gordar Tate and Ser Kalt Ardun, House Manwoody's knights. We are willing to provide a ransom of 600 dragons for each of them, upon proof of their survival and well-being."

"Ser Kalt is the prisoner of Ser Cortnay, who is not here, so I can only negotiate for Ser Gordar, who was heavily injured in the battle."

"Have Ser Kalt join you, and confirm this, and we'll enter negotiations."

Ser Myles frowns under his helmet, and then seems to sigh.
"Fine. Send for Ser Kalt. At least this will allow him to recover more."

You send a guard off, and he returns with Ser Kalt in turn. Ser Kalt raises a hand to Ser Myles, and calls down to him.

"Ser Myles, they came with siege and we failed to ambush her on the road. I apologise for our failiure. Ser Gordar is in a cell, though mainly due to him threatening to hand Lady Lissara from the walls of Vulture's Roost, and he's being treated for having 3 great-spears thrust through him."

Ser Myles visibly winces at the description of Ser Gordar's wounds, and shakes his head.

"I'll not stay while we are at war, not only do I have other duties, but it might raises awkward questions with out allies, if I'm staying with the enemy. We'll discuss the ransom as pat of your surrender, my Lady!" he calls out with a slightly humorous tone, before turning, and riding away. Ser Kalt is led back inside, and you return to your day.

Right this is just a difference in play style. My games, no one belonging to a noble family is lower than Status 3, so children will always incur an influence cost. The thought process coming from picture related where the lowest nobility is status 3. So yeah, just a difference in how people see the rules. Corebook loves to do nonsense like that.

That being said being Status 5 is definitely of value regardless so...

I have made a mistake. Your market is not yet build, nor is your saltworks, so you do not gain 5 wealth, you only gain 1. This means you would have had 4 wealth available, after paying the loan. You cannot build Food Agriculture at this time. My bad. Armour stays, unless people are dead set against it.

Sorry this session was more adminy, but if I have to have a shorter session, that's when I'll try to do most of the admin.

As a personal note, scorpions are really fun with a warfare focused character. My GM in my ASOIAFRPG real life game refuses to allow me to have them after I sniped out 4 enemy commanders in a large battle before the sides actually clashed.

Carth and Cortnay return a few days after Ser Myles had visited, and are somewhat put out as they arrive. Carth brings you and Ser Cortnay to the Solar, and informs you that House Selmy has made it clear they will not be aiding any dispute outside of the Stormlands.

"House Selmy is not feeling too secure in aiding anyone. Barristan Selmy may have been forgiven, but they are still uncertain about acting out of turn. We were swaying them, but then this arrived." He shows you a scroll, marked with a falcon and a hand. "The Hand has caught wind of this little dispute. He's made it clear that any Stormlands house that interferes will not be protected, either by the king or by Storms End against any reprisals that may arise, except for House Penrose, due to marriage connections. It's not stated, but it's clear that Jon Arryn is not best pleased with this, and I'm not surprised. It took him a year to get Prince Doran to bend the knee, and this kicks up all sorts of contentions."

Ser Cortnay shakes his head, and drums his fingers on the table.

"House Dondarrion are not going to join in war, not with a young, unmarried heir, and an ailing lord. Adding the disapproval of the mentor of the man they followed into rebellion, and they'll host us for a night, and ask us to leave, at best. House Caron might throw everything to the wind, and join anyway, but they'll not join out of the goodness of their hearts. They'll want something. And whatever they want, you'll end up paying it, or they'll probably switch sides just to spite us, Lord Caron is a bitter man. Before, you could have played on his temper, and brought him in with old grudges, but now, the price might be too high. Snubbing him would make you better viewed in Dorne, you could even deny ever approaching him, and most Dornishmen would see you as more Dornish. House Caron's been calling themselves the Lord of the Marches for centuries, and they've been the most active in border raiding. It comes to a balance of if he'd be useful, as opposed to whatever he wants and the ill will of Dorne."

They like you, it's not a formal alliance. (More specifically, they liked your father). That was me trying to represent who is positive towards you.
>>
Is there still time to hire mercs from Essos? If not I'll vote to visit house Caron. Our forces are not large enough.
>>
>>2881769
Mercs cost a mix of power and wealth, you have 2 power free, so you can hire some Green Mercs, for 2 power and 1 wealth. This is because power represents your ability to feed and house the units as well as the units themselves

"Our forces should be better trained, we already damaged House Manwoody, but I feel we will be outnumbered. But if we can force a battle, at a point of our choosing? Our siege engines should be useful, assuming the engineers fire correctly this time."

Cortnay rolls his eyes, and tuts.
"Leave them alone Carth, they already admitted they made a mistake. As far as where to fight? We need somewhere we can arrange our siege engines, and flat land for our cavalry. That is in short supply in the Red Mountains. Only three places I can think of."

Cortnay points to a map of the Marches, tapping the black line of the Boneway
"The Boneway. I can't imagine House Yronwood being too happy with us. However, it's got everything we need. We can split their forces, defend with one hand while striking with the other, before they can unify, and co-ordinate."
He points to a thinner black line.
"The road to Wyl. We end up between the two, flanked, and defensive, but they don't get to unify, and House Yronwood don't get angry at us. And if Wyl can't communicate with Manwoody, they might think we are laying siege, and pull back behind their defenses."
He then taps the road to Kingsgrave.
"Better position than Wyl, but the two will be able to attack us, and possibly link up, since Manwoody know the back routes and roads so might be able to steal a march on us. So, where do we plan to fight, and when do we march? Waiting a week will allow us to organise more, group up, allow Ser Gerold to make himself ready. But if we go the moment he arrives? We'll be in a better position."

>Where?
>Boneway? (Best for you, you can avoid their forces, not be trapped, and concentrate force on the two forces one at a time. House Yronwood will be pissed off)
>Road to Wyl? (Potentially worse position, you will end up trapped between House Manwoody and Castle Wyl. However, House Wyl may not sally out)
>Road to Manwoody? (Decent position, but House Manwoody may be able to flank you)

Yronwood can be charmed and persuaded to forgive us. All the other options are extremely dangerous for an outnumbered force.
>>
>>2881933
>Road to Wyl? (Potentially worse position, you will end up trapped between House Manwoody and Castle Wyl

If we we're worried about being outnumbered, we can't let them get together. Use speed, overwhelm and destroy one, then turn to face the other. Napoleon conquered nearly all of Europe on that maxim.

With all speed. We have the advantage in we've just bloodied them and will have high spirits.

I would give you the option of trying to rush them or fortifying on the road.
>>
>>2882030
And what are our scouts reporting? How are Manwoody troops acting?
>>
The question is one of our advantage of experience versus their advantage of numbers. Is it better for us to let them get together and test their advantage against ours or use our advantage when they are weaker and count on the veterans to win twice?
>>
>>2882045
>>2882030
Basically I am asking, do we know if they are going to be on the march soon or are they still waiting....
>>
>>2882045
They are keeping an eye on House Wyl atm, and House Wyl's forces are currently holed up in their castle, but their cavalry is missing.
>>
>>2882048
No matter what we pick, we're going to have a hard time.
>>
>>2882048
The main thing I'm concerned about is if we don't get a battle soon while holding the Boneway, Yronwood will get more and more mad at us to the point they may turn on us with the beckoning of Wyl and Manwoody.
>>
I'm going to give this 5 minutes, then call votes as they currently are.
>>
>>2882053
Maybe, so why not pick the one that doesn't make us more enemies?

"We fight on the Boneway. We pull this off, and we're in a position where Yronwood will think twice about moving beyond angry words. And we can always smooth things over, and the Wyl lands will be untouched, all the more for us to take. And to do this, we'll need to go quickly. As soon as Ser Gerold arrives, we march."

Cortnay frowns.

"We'll leave the garrison. Ser Ascar can command them, he'll defend this castle till his dying breath. We wait for Ser Gerold, and we march, force the Wyls to fight us on the Boneway."

Ser Cortnay nods, and stands.
"I'll tell the knights, they'll be pleased there is a plan."

Carth calls after him.
"Send a rider down the road to Ser Gerold. No sense in surprising him on his arrival..."

------------------------
Tomorrow, at midday, Ser Gerold rides into the port, with a 20 man group of knights bearing different heraldry, but all flying the star of House Dayne from their lance tips. He rides through, and arrives at the already formed column, riding to the front of it, and joining the other knights, while his guard fall in behind the group. Ser Cortnay raises a hand in greeting to him, and Ser Gerold soon begins talking with Ser Nestar. Ser Cortnay bows in the saddle to you, and you raises your spear, and lower it, pointing towards the Boneway. With a loud rumble, the column of nearly 500 men and horses, with 3 wagons loaded with siege engines transporting the chief engineers rolling behind, along with a host of smaller wagons containing grain, dried meat, and barrels of ale following behind them. You travel for most of the rest of the day, and you see a horseman ride out of the first Yronwood watch-tower you pass and ride away from you, down the Boneway. You soon arrive at a widening of the terrain, in a flat valley between the foot hills of the Red Mountains, and stop, atop a rise. Camp is set up, and you and the knights ride around the area, looking at terrain.

"As soon as we are here, House Wyl is going to come from there." says Ser Nestar, pointing to a road leading down a steep mountain pass, trailing off into the distance.
Ser Cortnay nods. "They'll stop at the mouth, and wait till Manwoody gets here, and try to link up. Once Manwoody's visible from further down the Boneway, we should commit to breaking Wyl, while leaving forces to defend against the Manwoody assault. It'll be brutal, but the units defending against Manwoody need to hold till we have broken House Wyl, then they can be relieved by our cavalry, then our infantry."

>Carth
Someone needs to protect our kids if we fall
>>
>>2882221
Carth has Marksmanship so he's clearly superior for defending the castle, and Ascar just has totally better skills and traits for combat. Carth's combat skill also becomes useless once combat begins in full cuz you're not gunna have forces hanging behind, so ranged becomes useless. It's retarded.
>>
>>2882228
Well, there could be forces hanging behind for some sort of tactics, but he has low Warfare so all he'd be doing is adding to crossbowmen damage.
>>
>>2882220

Ser Gerold speaks up.
"And who are you leaving there to hold? Infantry would make the most sense, but we'll have no one to commit against House Wyl other than cavalry. Obviously that could work, my personal guard and the Blacksand Cavalry are adequate, but the Penrose cavalry? I can see them being cut off and destroyed, are you willing to risk that, Penrose? Better to commit more men, guarantee a breaking of them. Also, who put you in charge?"

Ser Cortnay glares at him, and continues
"The scouts can either support the attack on the Wyl's, defend against the Manwoodys, but either way, they should scout for the Manwoodys, then fall back."
Ser Gerold cuts in again.
"No, they should harass them, try to slow them down. That way, more of our men can attack Wyl, break them faster. Is this your first time commanding, Ser Cortnay? Or do you know nothing of battlefield tactics?"

"Listen, Dayne, they are scouts, they're not suited to that sort of combat. Leaving them exposed is a surefire way to have them wiped out, gaining only a small amount of time. They can move back faster than the Manwoody's can advance, but if they stand and fight, they'll die." Ser Cortnay glares again, before turning to you.

"Who is overall commander, Lady Lissara? Or Ser Dayne here will pretend he is the Sword of the Morning all day..."

>Ser Cortnay (Very Skilled defensive commander, prefers siege bombardment and caution, then decisive action)

"Ser Cortnay leads. His record is far longer than yours, and he knows our forces. Ser Cortnay, what do you think we should do?"

"Thank you Lady Lissara. The Yronwood Infantry, and the Blacksand Infantry will draw up at the base of the hill, blocking the Boneway. Ser Darvin will command. Carth and the engineers will bombard the Wyl's when they appear, and then the Cavalry and Ser Gerold's guard will break them with a charge. The Engineers will re-aim, and bombard the Manwoody forces as they advance. Only thing that matters, is where do we put you, my Lady, and Ser Nestar. Ser Cletus and Ser Gerold will be with their units, but you and Ser Nestar can go either with your infantry or cavalry. I'll be riding with my cavalry at the weakest of the Wyl forces, because as Dayne rightly points out, they are not as experienced or equipped as the other forces. We'll break whoever we have to, then move to support the infantry."

"I'll ride with the cavalry, and Ser Nestar will go with the infantry. No sense in over-committing our best fighters against Wyl, and he might go a little crazy against his brothers, if either of them is there."

"Very well. Wyl aren't going to be here till tomorrow at least, traveling mountain roads is suicide at night."

Ser Gerold tuts and rides off, his sword clipping at the occasional flower. Ser Cortnay shakes his head.
"Seven save us from famous cousins. If thats what people turn into."
Ser Darvin grins.
"I've seen his type in the Vale enough, they do well in the battle, once their blood is up."
Carth shakes his head, and rides off, calling behind him.
"I'll be with the engineers, making sure that "New Rope" isn't blamed again."

The night passes somewhat uneventfully, but there are a few arguments over where tents should be, between Ser Gerolds knights. When the morning comes, your infantry slowly marches off, Carth dragging the engineers behind them, to dig trenches. There is copious amounts of moaning, but when Carth offers to allow Ser Darvin to take over directing them, it soon settles down. It doesn't take long before you see Ser Gerold riding to the top of the hill, his knights moving with him, and Ser Cortnay waving you over, as your cavalry is riding up towards the summit of the hill.

"House Wyl infantry! Almost at the mouth of the pass, looks like they brought everything!"

You ride up next to Ser Cortnay, who hands you a set of Myrish lenses, and gestures towards the mouth. Gazing through, you see three units of infantry marching towards the hill, drawing themselves into lines, scattered apart, clearly to mitigate missile damage. One is carrying a large banner, showing the House Wyl silks, and moves to the center. On the left is a group looking somewhat uncertain, with spears and shields, while on the right are others similarly armed to the central unit, though their movements are less slick and organized.

"Well, my lady? What do you want to take? I'm giving Dayne the center, so he can act like his older cousin. You want the left or the right?"

------------------------------
Carth is indeed ready, and as the 3 units of cavalry line up on the hill, he calls out for the engineers to sight their firing arcs. The six scorpions fire, and the catapult heaves the stones over your heads, and send them flying towards the infantry. Glancing to the side, you can see the scouts hurrying back towards where your infantry are lined up. Ser Cortnay waves forward, and the cavalry slowly rides down the hillside, moving towards the infantry. On the Boneway, you can see several clouds of dust rising. Your infantry shifts, but before you can look further, you need to look forward as your cavalry breaks into a canter...

You lunge with your spear, spearing into the neck of a man who raises his blade up towards you. Screams erupt, and you see the infantry begin to turn, loosing cohesion. They begin to fall back, slashing around them, trying to disengage.

The cavalry press harder, not letting the infantry disengage, and slowly, the infantry begin to turn, and then begin to run. You can see the left flank also fleeing, but the center is holding. Gerold Dayne is slashing down at a man in half-plate, a viscous energy to his actions. His knights are surrounded, but are slowly driving the infantry back. You see Ser Cortnay break out from the left, and wave his sword at you, and points it at the fleeing infantry infront of him, before wheeling around leading his men back towards your infantry.

You press forward, charging on. It doesn't take long, before all the infantry are either dead, or bleeding out on the ground. You swing your forces around, and aim towards the fight again. You can see Ser Gerold slash downwards, and a visible gout of blood shoot upwards, spraying all over him. The infantry begin to turn and fall back. Behind them, however, you can see your infantry are being surrounded, cavalry moving around the side. Ser Cortnay is riding towards them, leading his riders, but things are not looking good. The routing infantry are still fleeing, but with Ser Gerold's men, they might finish up the fleeing men. Then again, Ser Gerold is looking for glory...

You ride down the other infantry, as the infantry from the center begin to fall back, pursued by House Dayne's knights. Ser Gerold slowly rides towards you, blood splattered across half his face, a smirk covering his face.

"Well, my lady, that Stormlander can plan battles. Now, it looks like the Yronwoods and your infantry are in trouble. I'll ride to their rescue, if you clean up here."

He calls out, and waves his sword his knight following him. They turn and begin to ride away, towards the developing battle by your infantry. Behind them, you can see advancing infantry, lead by 20 soldiers wearing gleaming full plate-mail and large shields bearing the large crowned skull of Manwoody. One of the cavalry units has been engaged by Ser Cortnay, and look like they are on the edge of breaking, but the other flank looks severely in danger of falling.

You ride down the last fleeing men, cursing Ser Gerold for being a glory hound. As you finish up the last of them, you turn, seeing the whole field becoming a mass of bodies. You can see Ser Darvin and Ser Nestar stepping forward towards the encroaching infantry, and watch as the cavalry fighting Ser Cortnay flee. They seem familiar, looking like the riders who were fighting on the road, but on new horses, with the same armour, and equipped similarly. Ser Gerold's men break into a charge, aiming for the infantry block. Ser Nestar and Ser Darvin stand shoulder to shoulder, and as you begin to ride towards them, you hear them yell out before charging a line of 20 full-plate armoured soldiers...

"BLACKSANDS! BLACK HEARTS!"

The two of them move in, great-sword and longax swinging. They are soon lost among the plate armoured men, though the advancement of the infantry does halt. Ser Gerold is moving towards them, the Dayne knights swinging their swords in slow circles. Your infantry is still engaged by the cavalry, both in the front and in the flank, though Ser Cortnay is moving to assist on the opposite flank.

You slam through the join at the neck, and knock the man to the ground, but when you withdraw your spear there is no blood. You trample over the man, and enter the circle where Ser Nestar and Ser Darvin are standing, bleeding heavily from multiple wounds. They look up and raise their weapons, before lowering them, and inclining their heads. As your cavalry turn, you see the infantry pulling back slowly from the House Dayne Knights, and the personal guard doing the same. Behind you, the house Blacksand infantry are becoming more and more scattered, as the cavalry infront of them pushes deeper into the block. Ser Cortnay is still locked with the cavalry on the flank, and Ser Darvin and Ser Nestar look exhausted.

You slash and swing at the cavalrymen, locked in combat with the enemy unit. Taking a moment, you glance behind you, seeing Ser Gerold riding back and forth in-front of the slowly retreating infantry and personal guard. You hear his voice yelling indistinct words you cannot hear. The cavalry fighting Ser Cortnay are also falling back, leaving only the ones fighting you locked in. The butchers bill s long, but more of your men are injured than dead. The infantry lost several men, however, and when firing the catapult at the advancing Manwoody cavalry, a spar had broken, killing one of the engineers. Several of Ser Gerold's knights are seriously injured, mainly from the Manwoody guards retreating through them, attacking as they went. Ser Gerold seems unconcerned, saying a few months of recovery, or replacing them will fix anything wrong with his guard. Ser Nestar is seriously injured, but most of the wounds are superficial, needing care and rest, but after a week he should be fine. Ser Darvin is far worse, with a large blade cut to his stomach, and a nasty leg cut that makes it hard for him to ride. When asked why they charged, Ser Nestar shrugs.

"Ser Darvin said the boys were loosing heart, and those shiny men hitting them would have scattered our infantry, even with your intervention. So we delayed them a bit..."

Carth approaches you, a visible frown on his face.
"I was looking at the Manwoody forces. We allowed some of their infantry to flee, but I saw no green troops there, other than the infantry. And they should have had garrison troops with them, we can't threaten Kingsgrave, so why not bring their full force..."

Ser Gerold rides over, his face stained red.
"I didn't see Ser Myles or Lord Dagos, I was hoping to bleed one of them.."

Ser Nestar shrugs.
"I saw my brother behind one of those visors on the cavalry, before I charged. I think one of those cavalry units was the Serpents, in Manwoody colours. Don't know why, but maybe to hide the fact Wyl is probably undefended. But Manwoody brought far less than I expected..."

Ser Cortnay joins the group, scratching his head.
"Why would Lord Dagos not command, or at least send his brother? Unless they were somewhere else. Either way, we can take Wyl now, and end this. The place will be empty, since you wiped out the Wyl units, or we can camp here, and gather our strength. Though it might be better to do that at Shadowpeak...". His face falls. "Shadowpeak. Wyl have a port, and a fleet. They don't need to spend days crossing the mountains, if they had Manwoody units come to Wyl, and sail to Shadowpeak. Your fleet would fight them, but it won't stop some ships getting through...."

"Back to Shadowpeak. Now."

Ser Cletus looks around, then sighs.
"I'll take the infantry, and the engineers. I can siege an empty castle."

Ser Cortnay gathers the cavalry together, Carth gets a barrel of ale and a barrel of water breached for the men and the horses, and Ser Darvin slumps down on a tent. Ser Nestar tries to get one of the engineers to look at the wounds, but the man shakes his head.
"He needs rest. He can't ride now. He should stay here, but we can find him room on the wagons, so he'll be okay."

A few minutes later, your cavalry are riding away, up the Boneway. Carth looks at you.
"Lissara, don't worry. It's probably just paranoia. We'll find the twins running down to meet us, and Ser Ascar and Jelissa standing behind them, having done nothing more than changed the drapes."

Ser Gerold snorts.
"Drapery aside, I am not interested in riding all the way back. My men have been riding for a week, and fought your battle. If there isn't a good fight here, I will not be pleased."

--------------------
You ride through the afternoon, and as you arrive on the road to Shadowpeak, you can see ships on the water, far more than your navy has. The docks are on fire, with smoke rising from multiple buildings, and you can see people running buckets to and from the shoreline. As you ride closer, you look up to the castle. The gate is broken in, and you can see bodies littering the ground in-front of it, and over the top of them, you can see Ser Gordar and Ser Kalt carrying saddles to two sand steeds, you recognise as from your stables, glancing behind them, back through the gate.

You all spur your horses, and sprint for the castle. Ser Kalt sees you riding up the path, and drops the saddle, and begins running towards the Sand Steed, and vaults onto its back. Ser Gordar looks up, and shakes his head, dropping the saddle, and walks over to the castle wall, and sits down, pulling against his shirt. Ser Cortnay frowns, and points.
"Ill get my man back, you go for the castle. It looks like Ser Gordar is accepting his fate."

Ser Cortnay and his men ride off, after Ser Kalt who is looking over his shoulder. You ride towards the gate, and as you approach, Ser Gordar looks up at you.
"Where did you find those mad men?"

Ser Gerold looks curiously at you and Ser Gordar, before riding in. Bodies litter the courtyard, Manwoody and Blacksand heraldry mixed together. A portable ram sits on the ground, and the main doors are smashed in. Ser Gerold flips over a body, and whistles.

"Lord Anders has some explaining to do..."

The body is wearing the gate of Yronwood, and Carth inhales sharply. However, before any words can be exchanged further, you hear a loud yell from one of the upper windows, and a man wearing Manwoody colours falls, multiple small stab wounds puncturing his breastplate. You rush into the keep, seeing bodies cut apart by a sword littering the floors. Occasionally, there are some with a slit throat, or small holes punched in their armour. As you climb higher, you turn the corner, and see a small cluster of men, with swords drawn pointing at a door. Their colours are a mix of Yronwood brown and Manwoody black, and you can hear Ser Myles speaking.

"Be reasonable Ser. We're not monsters, stand down. In a few moments, my men will be back with crossbows you took from us at Vulture's Roost, and both of you will be dead. >14, 7, 13 vs TN 5 (3 Degrees)
>Unit routed.

You charge forwards, a crossbow bolt beating you to the men, striking a man in the back and dropping him. You hear a wordless yell, and Ser Ascar, covered in blood, staggers out of the door, slashing at the men around him, as you and the cavalrymen smash into the backs of the infantry. There is a brief melee before the men are running, and Ser Ascar is holding his sword to Myles Manwoody's throat. Standing inside the door, with bared stilettos covered in blood, is Jelissa, with Elia, Calrin and Cerran visible behind her. Ser Myles drops his sword, and slowly raises his hands.

"I'm assuming Kerin lost then. I said to my brother not to do this, and to commit to the battle, but he had some grand idea of marrying your daughter to his eldest, and making her swear fealty to him. Your children would have been fine, I promise, I would not have allowed anything to happen..."

Carth pushes past the men, and punches Myles square on the mouth. Myles sways from side to side, and blinks a few times.

You step past Jelissa, dropping your spear, and wrap your arms around Elia and the twins. They hug you back, and behind you, you hear another loud smack, and a thudding crash. Glancing behind you, you see Ser Ascar falling down the wall, and Jelissa rushing to his side. Two of your cavalrymen are pulling Carth back, while another two are leading Ser Myles down the corridor, the ridge of his nose smashed in and blood pouring down his face. Carth shakes the hands off of him, and steps inside, joining the hug....

>Garrison destroyed
>Ser Myles Manwoody captured (Status 4)

The next hour passes, and Ser Gerold brings Maester Borrel up, who immediately begins removing Ser Ascar's armour. Ser Cortnay rides back into the keep, leading Ser Gordar, walking, clutching a chest wrapped in bandages, and Ser Kalt, with his hands bound infront of him. The two join you and Carth in the Solar, where Ser Gerold holds up a banner bearing the Yronwood Gate.

"I realise that things are uncertain, but we did just allow a mercenary to command our siege, with only a critically injured knight to oversee him. Either we trust him, or we rush there, and take him. We slit his throat, or ransom him back, either one."

Ser Cortnay shakes his head.
"I agree with the first part, but it could be they are simply being honest mercenaries, as ironic as that sounds. They swore to be neutral, and that large army doesn't earn money. So lending to both sides could simply be their plan to make money. Either way, we should rush to Wyl."

Maester Borrel looks at you.
"Ser Ascar cannot travel. He's basically dead, a gentle breeze will kill him."

"Carth, Cortnay, stay here with your cavalry, clear out the castle, get the gate shored up. Ser Gerold, you're more scary than Ser Cortnay, time to put the fear on Ser Cletus."

It takes less than half an hour before you are on the road again, fresh horses underneath them, but the men are tiring. Ser Gerold still seems fine, and his smirk hasn't changed since you arrived at Shadowpeak. He rides up closer to you, and leans over.

"So are we going to be treating Ser Cletus like the Sellsword scum he is, or like an actual knight? I'd love to rustle some feathers, but taking him down the road to Yronwood in chains, might cause problems for you. Not for nothing did Prince Doran tread on eggshells around him, he could conquer the Marches if he wanted to, and thought he could get away with it."

"Gently, gently, Ser Gerold. Yronwood will hate us already for the battle, no sense making this worse."

Ser Gerold rolls his eyes, but shrugs.
"Fair enough. Though I am getting tired of being called Ser Gerold, I might change my heraldry to separate me from Starfall. Black looks striking on purple..."

Leaving him to his ruminations, you focus on the road, squinting slightly as the sky darkens. You turn onto the path leading to Wyl, and slowly ride, as the sun gets lower. You ride through the mountains, tail to head with your horses, till you see Castle Wyl, and a small camp arrayed in front of it. Yronwood soldiers are standing guard, though you can see Blacksand soldiers and the Penrose engines towards the front, though Wyl banners fly from the battlements. As you approach, the gaurds rush forward, but fall back upon seeing your banners.

"Soldier, where is Ser Cletus and Ser Darvin? We need to talk..."

The soldier points you to the tent nearest the siege engines, and upon arriving, Ser Darvin and Ser Cletus are inside, looking at a long scroll, but look up as you enter. Ser Darvin winces as he bows, but both rise, and look curiously at you.

"Was Shadowpeak secure?" asks Ser Cletus. Ser Gerold laughs, and pours himself a goblet of wine, before leaning on the edge of the table.

"It is now. No thanks to House Yronwood. We found Yronwood men laying siege to my home, with Yronwood soldiers trying to capture my children. Tell me you didn't know this, Ser Cletus, or we will have issues..."

Ser Cletus goes pale, and then slumps.
"I'd deny it, but there is no point. It was shortly after you left, but before the money arrived. Derrock Wyl tried to bring us in to fight, but my father refused. They even offered us Shadowpeak, after they won, but still, my father said no. However, he told them he had sworn neutrality, but was lending mercenaries. So they hired some. My father will be unrepentant I think, but I am. He should have told you when I arrived, or given me orders to do so. But he told me not to say, and to ensure I didn't fight Yronwood on Yronwood. I don't have anything to say, and my father won't apologise."

Ser Darvin is glaring at Ser Cletus, while Ser Gerold is twirling the black strands of his hair around his finger. He pushes himself up, and leans closer to Ser Cletus
"And we come here to a garrisoned castle, and with Wyl banners flying? Why? Why is this war not over?"

Ser Darvin speaks up.
"Darry. Wyl contacted them as soon as the announcement was made, and they rushed a unit of infantry here. They are under the command of Lord Raymun Darry, who's saying he's here to avenge his brothers. He offered a trial by combat, but I don't see the point in it."

"How is the siege going? The engines working?"

Ser Darvin points at the scroll
"We've got the engines set up, and they're trapped. They are intent to make this as long as possible, Lord Raymun is somewhat angry at you, or more importantly your father. We've got supplies, and are in a good state, but it'll be bloody to force our way in."

Ser Gerold sighs
"You can always end this by simply fighting Lord Raymun. He's the lesser brother of better men, beat him, and he'll leave."

"That will acknowledge whatever crime he thinks has been committed. And I want to know why he is here, beyond the hatred of my father. That doesn't bring soldiers all the way from the Riverlands here."

Ser Darvin shakes his head
"An assault will be bloody, and costly, but we can do it once the gates are down, probably by tomorrow afternoon. If you think you can beat him, fight him. It'll save lives, and save us time."

Ser Gerold shrugs.
"I'll fight him, as your champion if you want. You're allowed to do that, and your champions are somewhat battered..."

Ser Cletus looks up.
"Or we can lay siege and starve them out. It'll take time, and House Manwoody will regroup, but it'll cost us only food and time."

"We'll accept the trial by combat. Ser Gerold, I will name you as my champion. Ser Cletus, send a messenger saying we will begin at dawn tomorrow."

Ser Cletus bows, and walks out. Ser Gerold grins, and begins hopping from foot to foot, his hand moving like it holds a sword, before he grabs your hand and kisses it, before stepping out, taking the jug of wine with him. Ser Darvin shakes his head, and gestures to one of the beds.

"Have my bed, my lady, I'll sleep under a wagon, I'm used to it."

"No Ser Darvin, you are seriously injured. I will take Ser Cletus' bed, he owes it to me."

Ser Darvin grins, and removes a small flask from a pack at the end of his bed. Uncorking it, he offers it to you, the smell of pear and alcohol rising off it.

"A small thing I got From Master Hotas. Tyroshi pear brandy, perfect for toasting the upcoming duel."

You swing from it, and the alcohol stings your throat, the sweet taste of pears filling your senses. Handing it back, you collapse onto the trestle bed with Ser Cletus' helmet sitting on the end, and lie down. As Ser Darvin begins to drink from the flask, you feel your eyes close, the exhaustion of the day taking you away....
>>
>>2885264
The next morning, you are standing outside a enclosed arena, built last night by the engineers. Ser Gerold is walking back and forth, in his armour that has been cleaned and polished, a greatsword in his hands. On the other side, Lord Raymun Darry is strapping into his armour, a shield and a longsword next to him. He glares at you, and you recall the words he had entered the arena with.

"May the Seven judge you for the theft of my brothers armour, and the mistreatment of his body!"

He does have a point, your trophy room is decorated with his brothers helm and shield. However, you are in no mood to entertain his fantasies of this being a great wrong, his brother was not part of his house when he died, and this is all for some insane affronted honour. Ser Gerold gestures with his sword, and Lord Raymun stands, swinging his sword back and forth. He raises his sword to the sky, and then calls out.

"Warrior guide my blade, Father watch me justly, Mother guard me clos..."
"Oh shut up and fight, you pious prick!" Ser Gerold calls, before stalking towards Lord Raymun. Raymun lowers his sword, and breaks into a run. The two meet, Gerold's sword slamming onto the shield of Raymun. Raymun's sword clashes into the armour of Gerold, and the two break apart. Gerold reaches up and takes his helmet off, revealing a huge smile. He moves towards Raymun, and as the sword of Raymun swings at him, Gerold jumps over it, and swings his greatsword to within an inch of Raymun's helmet, before pulling it back. Raymun whirls around, and Gerold breaks into a laugh, before unleashing a hail of blows, none of which actually hit, each one lightly tapping the armour or shield. Raymun gives a yell of anger, and swings his sword at Gerold's head, who steps to the side, and taps the sword with his sabaton, before shoulder-barging Raymun backwards to the floor, and swinging the greatsword to Lord Raymun's neck, before pulling it up and tapping Lord Raymun's helmet with a loud dink. Raymun stands, and points his sword at Gerold.

"FIGHT LIKE A MAN, DO NOT MOCK ME!"

Gerold kicks his sword, and cocks his head to the side.
"I will fight like a man, when I'm not fighting a child. Stick to farming ploughman!"
>>
>>2885324

Gerold launches another assault, each time stopping short of doing any real damage, except for once where he reverses his grip and bouncing the pommel off of Lord Raymun's helm. Lord Raymun staggers backwards, and spits onto the floor, pulling his helmet off.

"It was a dark night when you were born Gerold Dayne, you were born under a dark star!"

Gerold stops moving, and then breaks into a bigger grin. He rushes forward, and in a single motion, slams the hilt of his sword into the stomach of Lord Raymun, and when Raymun collapses to his knees, Gerold drives his blade into the calf muscle of Lord Raymun. He twists it once, eliciting a loud scream of pain from Lord Raymun.

"Lord Raymun, surrender, or I kill you."

Raymun, with gritted teeth, spits out a venemous "I yield. I yield"

Ser Gerold draws his blade out, and walks away.
"A good Maester will make you able to walk. But it will always ache, and you'll remember the day you crossed this Dark Star."

Gerold vaults the fence, and bows to you, his face glowing with happiness.
"I thank you for this, my lady, I'd have challenged him at once if I knew it would be this fun. Enjoy your castle. I've got a meeting with a herald of arms, and a raven to send to the Citadel!"

Lord Raymun is helped up, and carried back to the castle, and within an hour, infantry bearing the banners of House Darry walk out of Castle Wyl, leaving it empty. You enter, with Ser Nestar, and allow yourself to revel in victory....

Ser Nestar is empowered by you as the Knight of Castle Wyl, and over the next two weeks, repairs are made to Shadowpeak, and Ser Cortnay remains for a few days, ensuring that the letter of the law is observed, and that Ser Kiran cannot contest the appointment of Ser Nestar as the Knight of Castle Wyl. He leaves, wishing the two of you best, and inviting the two of you to Storms End to visit him and Lord Renly at some point in the near future. Slowly, life returns to normal, the port is repaired, and trade begins moving, slowly.

I would love to repair this and set Ser Ascar up as a landed knight. perhaps Carth's family has an engineer that they could lend to reduce the cost?

>Wyl
IIRC wyl has a common mine, a smelter, and a Mill. So if we encourage him to get an artisan personage at a discount we can form a trade connection for at least +3 wealth. Carth can probably pull some economic wizardry on their lands as well.

it would also be nice to build their fleet back up and combine it with ours for pirate smashing fun.

>Carth

We should look into getting spies, or better yet assasins. for 15 wealth we can have assassins with plausable deniability.

bonus points if they use the same poison that was used on our dad, and the same communication. that way if they are discovered the trail leads back to our father's murderers.

It has been a long two weeks. Shortly after you took Castle Wyl, with Lord Darry leaving Dorne, with his honour satisfied but his temper uncooled, a messenger arrived from Kingsgrave. It was from Ser Kiran, announcing that in return for not being stripped of his family name, he would renounce his title, and acknowledge Ser Nestar as the rightful owner of Castle Wyl, along with a ransom request for Ser Gordar and Ser Myles from Lord Dagos Manwoody. Over the following feast, Ser Nestar makes a formal proclamation, swearing fealty as the Knight of Wyl, before leaving the next day to survey his holdings and plan for the restoration of his new home. Ser Ascar is still wounded, and has been kept abed by Jelissa, who, along with Maester Borrel, has nursed Ser Ascar for the whole two weeks. Ser Darvin is similarly still wounded, but unlike Ser Ascar, he left bed as soon as he could walk, and has spent his time walking around the port, swigging from his refilled flask. Maester Borrel did complain to you, but Ser Darvin pointed out that he would simply keep on getting up, or get too drunk to walk, and asked the Maester which would be preferred.

Elia and the twins seems quiet, far less talkative than before. However, after you and Carth explain to them what happened, in simple language, and they soon begin playing again, and asking questions about new things. It is shortly after fielding a batch of these questions, mainly about the anatomy of a fish, that Carth takes you aside and asks you a question.

"Do we have anything we can do, or are we going to allow things to remain as they are, and see what comes up? We could embark on a new project, or take up my brother's invitation, or anything really."

"We'll send a raven to Storms End, see about visiting your brother. Not for a week or so, enough time to plan. We'll visit Parchments as well, I haven't seen your father and mother since our wedding."

Carth smiles, and turns.

"I'll go and speak to Maester Borrel, see about getting a raven sent."

"No need, I want to speak with him about something anyway."

Carth shrugs and walks away. You head to Borrel's chamber, where he stores his scrolls and records. Knocking on the door, you enter, and close the door behind you. Maester Borrel stands, and bows.

"My Lady, may I ask why you are here?"

"Maester, I want you to send a raven to Storms End, accepting Ser Cortnay's invitation to visit. Also, I have been bedding Carth for the past few months regularly, and I do not feel pregnant in the slightest. My moons blood is regular, and I know Carth hasn't been sleeping with whores. I want you to do something about this. I want more children."

Maester Borrel had been noting down a raven scroll, but drops his quill, and looks up at you, his eyebrows raised. He opens and closes his mouth a few times, before adjusting his chain, and interlacing his fingers.

"Well my lady, I could do this, but if this is a problem you have identified, I'd like to examine you, my lady, before I mix any potives that could do something unforeseen. There are any number of reasons you could be less fertile. I simply want to ensure it's not something a draft would make worse."

You undo the ties of your dress, and let it drop. Maester Borrel casts his eyes upwards, and tuts.

"Some warning next time, my lady, please? Now, please sit on the bed."

For the next few minutes, Maester Borrel inspects you, gently touching your lower back and private areas, before taking a thin implement with a cloth pad on the end of it and making you jump slightly. He indicates for you to dress, and pulls down a book from his bookshelf. He flips a few pages, and by the time you are dressed again, he looks up with a dour look on his face.

"I have some poor news, my lady." He shows you the page he was looking at, and sucks air through his teeth. The page shows a rather disgusting image, a woman with various strange markings covering her body, coloured red, black, and yellow ink. Maester Borrel taps an area marked with what looks like a red triangle and two orbs.

"This is your womb, my lady." The image suddenly makes more sense, it is a "map" of the female body.
"And these are the source of children, with the adding of male... ejacula. Unfortunately, the... incident at Sunspear. If you would look at the scars?"

You glance down and touch where you were stabbed. Things begin to align in your head.
"I believe the knife may have interfered with the links between these..." he points to the orbs "And your womb. This means you may be infertile, or at least have far reduced fertility. I am sorry, my lady. I know this isn't what you want to hear."

You slide slowly down onto the bed, your dress still partially undone, and hold your head in your hands. You shake your head, feeling tears slipping through your fingers. Maester Borrel shuffles uncomfortably, and clears his throat a few times, before standing and bowing.

"I'll fetch Lady Jelissa. She's far better for this..."

"No Maester. No. There has to be something, anything?"

Maester Borrel shakes his head, as you blink tears away from his eyes. He taps the book.

"Even the Archmaester of Silver would think twice before trying this, and it wouldn't be a certain fix. I cannot tell if the tube is broken, or if the orb itself is. And the Archmaester does not perform surgery for even the King. Even Grand Maester Pycelle would flounder at this, and he's the most skilled Maester outside of the Citadel. There is a healer in the North, I heard of him during my studies, but he is quite old now, I doubt he could leave his home, let alone want to. He has a dim view of Dorne, for reasons no-one is quite certain of. If you want to contact him, he might be the only healer outside the Citadel I would trust with this. I can send a raven, but I promise nothing. Also, the man is apparently a viscous bastard, and more than a little greedy. He is keenly aware of his value. It would be exceptionally costly and he would want payment just for seeing you."

You shake your head, and simply allow her to hug you, and wipe your face, making you look more presentable, before she leads you out of the room, and to your chambers. She sits you down, and asks if you want to speak to Carth. You nod, and she hurries away. A few more minutes pass, before the door opens again, and Carth enters. Upon seeing your face, he rushes to your side, clasping you close to him.

"Lissara, whats wrong? Lissara, talk to me?"

You lean on his shoulder, hugging your face to his chest. You sob for a few more moments, before gulping, and looking at him.

"I spoke to Borrel, about something I wanted to speak to him about. I... I wanted to know why I wasn't pregnant. He said the assassin made me infertile. He said something about a healer in the north... but I can't have children anymore..." you begin sobbing again, as Carth freezes. His hand tightens on your arm, and he stutters a few unintelligible words. The two of you stay like that, as the sun goes lower, and as the day stretches. Jelissa brings a small plate of food, but makes no comment. The evening begins, and Carth pulls you tighter keeping you warm as the room gets colder.
>>
>>2893387
You wake the next morning, still leaning on on Carth, while his head is resting on yours, his breath blowing onto your face. The two of you are still sitting on the bed, Carth still sleeping, and your face is still damp. You still feel like you can't do anything but sit in the arms of the man you love. The plate of food that had sat untouched is gone, and a jug of water is in its place. Carth stirs, and his stubble rubs on your scalp, something you haven't felt since your wedding night, when Carth was apparently

"As tired as Bran the Builder after building the Wall"

according to Cortnay when you breezed into the hall of Parchments for breakfast and Carth squeaked and quickly limped out the main door. You smile, and laugh softly, remembering how for the first few weeks of your marriage, Carth had avoided you, and only come to bed long after you had fallen asleep. And how after the time you had pretended to be asleep, and ambushed him, and he'd pretended to have a jousting wound of all things. It had taken his father sitting him down, and pointing out that having a marriage with this much bedroom happiness was probably never going to happen in history, and suggesting that he take the initiative. He did the next night, and your marriage to a decided upswing.
>>
>>2893407
You laugh again, and Carth stirs, opening his eyes, and turning his head around, wincing at the stiffness in his arms and neck. As he looks at you, the door opens, and Elia puts her head around the crack. She is joined by Cerran and Calrin.
"Momma, Pappa? Jelissa said you were ill, so we made you food!"

Indeed, the twins are balancing a tray with what looks like a selection of the bottom two shelves of the kitchen pantry. You can see some apples, a small pot of honey, what looks like saucer of milk, and a small pile of what looks like dry oats. Babu comes in behind the children, and is carrying a sealed pot, which he hands to Elia, who opens it, and the smell of strongwine fills the air.
"Ser Darvin got this from the cellar if we distracted the man who was watching the door! He said he wasn't allowed down there, but we weren't allowed in the pantry, so it's okay. Don't tell anyone except you!"

Carth laughs, and hurries over, taking the tray, and putting it on the table, before chivying the children out, taking the strongwine before they go. He turns to you, and begins cutting a piece of apple, dips it in honey and oats, before feeding it to you. You giggle, and he picks up the saucer, and sips some milk from it, before making a face.

"I think they put salt in this.... I presume they thought it was sugar. I'll dilute the wine, I think..."

You blink a few more times, and take an apple, biting into it. The sun begins to shine through the window, and the room lights up with the colours of the blue silk curtains. You accept a sip of the diluted strongwine, and laugh as Carth tries to take another sip from the saucer, before shaking his head frantically, and spitting the milk out of the window. A yell comes from below, and Carth yells back.

"Don't you complain, Ser Darvin, because your future Lady told us about your escapades in the cellar for them! For that, you can endure some salted milk on your head!"

>>2896750
You currently have rank 3 animal handling, and no specialties.
>>
Well lads what say we get riding specialty?

Or we bank it.
>>
>>2896737
We mostly fight as cavalry. Also would be nice to get animal companion like guard/hunting dog something cheap and easy to control. That can be useful to hunt/truck and protect from assassins/recognize smeels in the extreme situansions be use as a tester of food. So yeh +1
>>
Let's take the riding speciality. Bank the rest.

The rest of the day passes with barely a hitch, though you and Carth do eat a slightly larger lunch than normal to make up for the less than appetising breakfast. It is late afternoon, when Maester Borrel brings you a sealed raven scroll, and hands it to you. Unrolling it, you find the Baratheon sigil, the Penrose sigil, and a short message.

"Lady Lissara, we will expect you in a weeks time at Storms End. Bring the children, I imagine everyone could use a break. Lord Renly Baratheon and Ser Cortnay Penrose."

When you tell the children, they immediately go out of control, running around the room, and yelling about what they need to pack, till you point out that you won't be leaving for a few days, and there is no reason to strip their rooms of all they want so soon. Carth hurries them out of the Solar, and turns to you.

"We do need to make some decisions. How are we going to travel there for one?"

>By road?
>By boat?

Stormlands can be stormy. Don't want to end up like the previous Baratheon lord.

"We'll go by road. It's not called the Stormlands for nothing, though at least the roads should be safer. While its not very populated, that does mean the roads are generally clear of bandits."

Carth nods.

"You mentioned something about visiting my parents? Do you want to do that first, or go to Storms End first? I doubt anyone would be offended either way."

>Storms End first?

"We'll go to Storms End first, then Parchments. It's more polite, and more politic. And it makes sense, since they sent the invitation. Are we going to bring all the children? They extended the invitation to them, but the twins may be a little young."

>Bring the whole family?

"We'll all go of course!" says Carth, "otherwise we'd have to tell the children that some of them weren't going. Right, fortunately, the whole journey will be on a good road. There won't be many castles on the road, but there's more than a few inns and way-houses."

"Good, I don't feel like engaging in high politics at every time we stop, like my trip to Sunspear." you say, as you and Carth exit the Solar, and begin to walk down to the courtyard, intending to take a walk along the walls.
Carth pauses."There's only... Summerhall... which might need some questions answered for the children, at least Elia, whose been learning her stories. Should we take anyone else, or just us? As I said, the roads are very safe, mountains and lords who enjoy fighting result in little in the way of bandits.."

They prob won't attack just yet, otherwise Dorne would be a big mess, especially if killed in Stormlands.
>>
>>2897047
We could turn half of them away at the border to the Stormlands,
>>
>>2897047
>probably
Well then I guess that is more than enough to not wear seat belts or post guards at the gate of a castle then.

But seriously what would be the negative consequence of not bringing a little extra men?

"We'll just take a cavalry escort, as a formality. No sense in being foolhardy, just because we've won a war."

Carth pushes open the main door, and leads you into the courtyard. The two of you head up to the walls, and stroll back and forth along the wall top. Carth whistles a few notes, and wraps his arm around you.

"It'll be good to go and see the Stormlands again, and Storms End. I could even see where you lived as a child, before King Robert came to the throne!"

You scowl at him, remembering the small single room your family shared adjacent to the Storms End barracks, and the fact it was downwind from the stables. The last thing you needed was Carth seeing that. Jabbing him in the ribs, you pinch his cheek.

"We're going to visit your brother, and to spend time being lords! Not to have you poke into my childhood!"

Carth throws up his hands, and shrugs.

"It was simply an idea. Nothing more than that. Do you want to take Jelissa? You did complain about feeling less than your glamourous self in Sunspear, and it is why you accepted her service. And she deserves a trip, after her help defending the children."

"Of course we'll bring her. I'm not being presented to the Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, and then your Mother, with my hair not perfect..."

----------------
The next two days pass in a frenzy of preparation, the carriage is repainted and cleaned, supplies are packed, and the children throw all their belongings into travel chests, then are politely informed by Carth that maybe 3 chests per child is a little too much, and servants take over, repacking the chests, and removing some of the more ridiculous items, like the small chair Calrin had put inside one of his chests. After the packing is done, the chests are loaded, you all pile into the carriage, you and Carth opposite each other, Elia and Jelissa next to you, Calrin and Cerran on either side of their father. The cavalry form a diamond around the carriage, and the group of you move off, heading up the Boneway, leaving Dorne behind you. You travel across the flat land on either side of the Wyl river, and head north, into the long mountain pass that leads through the Stormlands proper. The road is well built, made of mortar and large flat stones, and the miles vanish beneath you. As the afternoon continues, you pass a turning, where soldiers wearing the black and purple of Dondarrion are garrisoning a small stone watchhouse. They watch as you pass by, but make no comment or movement. Soon the shadows of the mountains are stretching out, and the cavalry are spreading out. Carth looks at you.

"There's an inn a short way ahead, or we could camp alongside the road. It's up to you, but I think the children would appreciate a soft bed, they're not the veteran campaigners we are." he says with a grin.

>Inn?

"Not just the children Carth, I want a soft bed, and a private room, hopefully." you reply, raising your eyebrows towards him. He rolls his eyes in response and calls out the window to the cavalry, and a few minutes later, the carriage is rolling into the courtyard of a well appointed inn, with a stone wall encircling a squat, two storey stone building, with a thatched roof. A long wooden building is along two of the walls, and as you step down, you can see two stable boys leading the carriage horses into them, as the cavalrymen are doing the same for their mounts. A middle-aged woman in a white apron and a grey dress appears from the stone building, and bows low.

"My lord, my lady, I've sent for some rooms to be made available, and there is some goat stew freshly cooked. If there's anything else, please let me or my husband know, he's handling the common room at the moment."

Carth grins and walks forward.
"Lissara, you've been inflicting Dragon Peppers on me for too long! Time for some Stormlander food!"

He strides inside, and you follow him, as Jelissa takes the children by the hand, and leads them inside. The main room is warm and lit by a roaring fire, and there are a handful of soldiers wearing the stag of House Baratheon sitting at a table, with a knight leading them. Seeing Carth, they stand, and bow, before bowing again to you. The knight waves a hand at his men.

"Go through to the common room, there are children here, no need for your filth."

As the soldiers filter out, Carth nods in thanks. The knight waves to the table they were sitting at, and indicates the cloths that are on the seats.

"Apologies, Lord Carth, Lady Blacksand. We did not expect anyone else, so we might have taken all the comfort. You may not remember my Lord Carth, but I'm a friend of your brother, Ser Dovan Errol, at your service."

Carth nods, and smiles.
"I do remember you, yes, you broke his nose when he tested you for service in the house. He claims he was going easy on you, but it's still visible."

Ser Dovan nods, and begins clearing empty jugs of ale from the table, as Jelissa moves Calrin and Cerran onto seats. The two are drooping their heads, blinking slowly. Jelissa looks at you, then begins to lead the children upstairs, where she is joined by the innkeeper's wife who shows her the way upstairs. You and Carth begin eating, with Ser Dovan joining you to finish his meal. You hear the cavalrymen entering the common room, and as you finish and head upstairs, the sound of the soldiers beginning to sing "Oh, Lay My Sweet Lass Down in the Grass." You and Carth step into a room with a cot bed, and as he goes next door to check on the children you undress and slip into the sheets. Carth re-enters a few minutes later, and climbs in, hissing as he touches you.

"We're never going to the North if you're like a pile of snow here. I can see why you like Dorne!"

You snuggle closer to him, to small complaints from him, and the two of you drift off to sleep..."

My internets been on the fritz for the past 20 minutes, I've had this typed for 10 minutes now. I'm going to call it here, partially due to my internet being shit, and partially due to me being still partially ill.

I know I said I'd run now, but my cold has gotten worse. I'm in no state to run a game. Sorry. I'll put a new thread up either tomorrow or Thursday. I'll also post in qtg, so check there for updates. Time I'll post will be between 1900-2000 BST

I will find you, and revive the shit out of you, if i have to...

okay, there have been three short threads mostly based around mechanical system stuff followed by a brief hiatus.

these are symptoms of QM burnout. especially since they occur at the juncture between two arcs.

If thats not the case, and you really are sick and beset by problems, then I am sorry.

but heres some unsolicited advise for QM burnout.

relax, you dont owe us shit. you are doing this because you enjoy it. As a corollary you can be honest with us. If you need a week to chill out and figure out the next arc then say that.

also, take more time than you think you need. QMing is very intensive in its use of nental resources.

anyone who bitches was a collosal faggot anyway.

consider running less frequently.

yeah it sucks, but we love your quest and will adapt.

what you dont want to do is make endless excuses to yourself and the players.

hope you feel better soon.
>>
While I understand that QM is probably ill and recovering, I hope that he can pop in here or in qtg to inform us that he isn't dead. I'll even give him my burner twitter account so he can communicate with us.
>>
I am recovered from illness and ready to continue! New thread is up, and I am currently archiving this one!

>>2908971
It wasn't burnout, I had the whole next section planned out, I was simply wrecked by a cold. Took a few more days to recover than I thought it would, but I'm good now. Thanks for the concern. The shorter sessions before were mainly due to me coming down with the cold.

NEW THREAD HERE!!
