You are Colors Eriksdotter, Warlock Knight of the Spring Court in New Avalon. Currently, you are surrounded by the kind of excessive gold-based wealth normally associated with dragons, and honestly it's a bit of a let-down in real life. Is it that you can't think of anything to spend such wealth on?

Did the Glass Mountain just take all the luster out of luster?

"I...I guess those books actually sound good," you say after a moment of thinking about Erin's suggestion. "I'm the one who told Misery that I wanted to be good at things besides violence. What are you thinking?"

Erin gives you a smile that seems almost shy. "Why don't we start with some of the Spring ones and move on from there? There's one I never got around to learning myself, actually...c'mon."

The two of you head downstairs, back in hearing distance of the phonograph and its music. The tune has changed, but it isn't until you hit the main room and catch Forum & Shipmate Sally dancing to it like fools that you realize it's fucking Spooky Scary Skeletons.

Forum freezes mid-dance.

"I didn't see this if you didn't," you propose.

"Yep," the Ogre agrees, before he goes back to dancing.

Erin has the courtesy to wait until you're halfway down the stairs to the living quarters before asking, "The fuck kind of Winter is that guy anyway?"

"I...am not...sure," you admit. "But I think the good kind?"

"If you say so."

You're not entirely sure what you expected out of the living area, but when you get down there you are reminded that this is in fact a boat. As before, the sideways nature of the Hidden Hoard has cause the floor and walls to be rebuilt of Thorn wood, bolted together with silver and glass, but where you expected private rooms (cabins?) there are instead hammocks, two to each wall on the left and right, and one strung up between a pair of heavy bookshelves.

"That one was mine," Erin says, gesturing to the lone hammock. "The galley is down here too, just through that door. We used to sit up late at night, if we weren't working. Anne liked it when I read out loud..."

The ex-pirate drifts forward, and you follow in her wake. The place was clearly left with some intention to come back; you can see candy wrappers on flat surfaces near the hammocks, novels left out with thin bookmarks in them, sketches of Lost and mortals with prices and notes marked beneath their faces.

There's a cactus near Erin's hammock, on one of the bookshelves. She caresses its soft needles in an absent way.

"Shelf on the right," she tells you. "The Spring ones are O Children of the Rain by Lustra, Eros and Anterso by Psyche, and Riots on Demand by Motherfucker."

"By -"

"It's a long story, and he tells it better than I could. Go on, actually, open that one up."

The book in question is a surprisingly thick tome, lovingly hand-bound and with a distinct floral scent. You open it, and -

The pages are petals, white rose petals that grow living from the soil bound into the book's spine by gossamer spider's webs. The stems and thorns of the roses form the writing.

"He was a real extra guy, Motherfucker was," Erin murmurs. "...Took me in, when I joined Spring. He's gone now, vanished some years back. That one...wasn't me. Though maybe it was, in a way, since the Patriarch was still keeping tabs on me."

"You can't blame yourself for everything," you say in a soft voice.

Erin snorts. "The list of what I can blame myself for is pretty long, Colors."

You have acquired books on the contracts of Fleeting Spring, Eternal Spring, and Verdant Spring. You also find and take a book on...

> Contracts of Communion; you can command elements already, but being able to speak and be answered would be really useful
> Contracts of the Forge; you've seen the Rook use this to devastating effect, and the power to rewrite reality in small ways shouldn't be underestimated
> Contracts of Dream. Susan exposed a vulnerability that you aren't comfortable with.
> Tokens, oddments, and other items of Wyrd; you almost didn't recognize John's blades. What else have you forgotten?

Write-ins will not be accepted on this vote.

A title catches your eye, on an old-fashioned book with gilt lettering: Somnambulism. Intrigued, you set the other three down on a table and take it from the shelf. It has that slightly musty, dusty scent you remember from old library books, and when you turn the first page a simple print script says 'On Dreaams, their Realm, and the Pacts and Oaths Defined Theereupon'. The doubled letters are joined up, slightly overlapping, and it takes you a moment to place it as a kind of typewriter error.

"I think I'd like this one," you tell Erin. "It seems to be about dreams..."

Erin says something that sounds like agreement while you page through the book with slow movements of your fingertips so as not to wrinkle or tear the pages. It's full of a striking combination of that typewriter text, full of errors and places where fading ink almost turns one letter into another, and hand-drawn pen sketches done in a combination of professional blue and bright, editorial red that weave together to make violet shadows and striking figures, diagrams, and landscapes.

You go back to the first page, looking for an author, and almost drop the book.

It says, 'Tiime is fluid heare'.

You have acquired books with information on the Contracts of FLEETING SPRING, ETERNAL SPRING, VERDANT SPRING, and DREAMS.

"I'm gonna get your friend some of the fruits from my garden," Erin tells you, while you bundle the books up. "You should get some too."

"I...yeah, good plan."

As it turns out, most of the others are having a similar set of ideas. The garden is rooted in the soil near the bow of the ship; it's more spacious than you expected, and more vertical, going from the ground and up through a circular hollow in the Hidden Hoard that opens up to the sunlight. Your one-armed friend is currently thoughtfully eating a pear; he sits on an empty milk crate with a wooden box across his lap. Forum is quietly picking out a share of fruit; Shipmate Sally deadass stands on his shoulders like a nautical cheerleader, selecting fruits with a certain amount of deliberation and sometimes tapping one of Forum's shoulders or the other with her foot to get him to move them to another spot.

"Do you not have a ladder?" you ask Erin?"

"Shh," Forum interrupts between bites. "I know what I'm about."

"Vickie's gonna be jealous," you warn.

Erin laughs. "Can't see why she would be. If she stood on Forum they'd form Voltron."

Forum's laughter almost knocks Sally down, and she bops him on the cheek with the toe of her boot in silent outrage.

You drift towards a surgeonberry bush you see growing on the bottom level of the garden, steel yourself for its salt-sour flavor (it's like blood had a baby with a Mega Warhead), and eat until you feel your wounds close in. Erin silently passes you a water bottle from a half-used pack of the things near the stairs down here before she starts picking out fruits to give to Vickie, and you spend some time trying some of the various glamour fruits and nuts on offer, but at some point you have to stop before you throw up. As it turns out, between your stomach and your ability to contain Glamour, your stomach loses.

You heal 3 DAMAGE. You gain 5 GLAMOUR.

"What'd you take?" the Rook rasps, while you take a seat on the rest of the water bottles.

"Books," you admit. "Books of magic. You?"

He nods down to the wooden box on his lap. "A game that enforces bets made on it. Forum?"

"Haven't decided yet," he says, still looking at plants at his eye level and slowly eating his fruit. "Probably some Hedgespun. I've got a powerful need for formal wear."

"...She's got a wardrobe," you suggest, not entirely sure if you're supposed to say it out loud.

"Could do me right," the Troll agrees pleasantly.

Erin offered you a full bounty of goblin fruit. You take

> Surgeonberry (heal 1 damage)
> Glamour fruits (gain 1 glamour)
> Coupnettle (up to 1/day, coupnettle tea grants you your Vice bonus)
> Buglewort (remove fatigue penalties, remain awake for 24 hours, then pass the fuck out)

And called, writing.

So while I'm writing this update, quick question: what's the feeling on removing fully fulfilled Pledges from your sheet? For instance:

> Motley Oath (Vickie Reeds, the Rook, Forum, Misery Monroe; Nemesis Pledge [Misery Monroe]) - Colors is sworn to investigate and stop whoever is promising to take people in New Avalon to “Wonderland”, by any means necessary, and to lead Vickie, the Rook, and Forum in doing so. All four must defend and protect each other to the best of their ability. Successful fulfillment of this oath earns a favor from Misery Monroe. FULFILLED

This one's done both in the sense that you upheld your end & in that its duration has run up.

You make your selections, with some assistance from Forum to get a boost up to higher shelves. The labeling on everything is very precise, and you end up copying down some recipes for use at home (in particular, these fruits are gonna need drying so they don't just go bad in your pockets).

Erin comes back partway through and fills her own pockets. As everyone else is packing up their stuff to go, Forum asks her about her Hedgespun wardrobe, and the two of them slip upstairs to go get it.

Shipmate Sally picks up the phonograph and its odd, green-white vinyl, and nods to herself.

As it turns out, the Hedgespun wardrobe takes the form of an antique suitcase with a trailing padlock, which Forum carries with him. You lead the way out of the Hidden Hoard and towards the door, where Vickie is leaning with one hand on Fido's head while she talks to Fancy about something. They stop when the dancer gestures at the group; Vickie turns to wave at all of you, and you and Forum wave back.

"I have gotten answers to questions about ballet that I never knew to ask," Vickie notes.

"You asked," Fancy points out. "Even I know not to ask questions I don't want the answer to."

"She's right," Forum and the Rook say at the same time.

Your Darkling friend rolls her eyes and waves all of you back out through the door. You wait around while the gate snaps shut, and then Forum and Vickie get the door off of its hinges.

Your brain helpfully provides the Benny Hill music while you high-tail it back to the RV like the door-stealing crooks you are, with Fido barking happily while he bounds among you.

"So Vickie," Forum says as you get the cargo compartment closed. "I'm told we could form Voltron."

"What the fuck is a Voltron?" comes the Darkling's answer; she blinks when she gets some variant on 'Are you kidding me?' from everyone present. "Damn, okay then. Just tell me it's not like a sex thing or something where you hook batteries up to people."

Erin has her hands pressed to her face to keep from laughing, an effort she fails at when the Rook answers: "Only insofar as the entire 80s were a sex thing."

"I'll get you some DVDs," Forum promises. "We should go before someone notices that we stole an entire door."

Erin's still chuckling to herself when all of you file into the RV. Maybe it's the energy around you, and maybe it's just that you made this trip once already, but you manage to get into vehicle without having to force yourself into it. Vickie and the Rook sit back down at that same table from before, but this time you sit yourself next to the Darkling and buckle yourself in. She gives you a sunny smile before she starts rifling through her pockets, taking out first one deck of the brown-backed cards, then changing her mind and getting out another one.

Sally gets in the driver's seat again, with Forum taking the seat next to her. Erin and Fancy sit down at the other table and start a conversation about swordplay, and the Feast of Strength, in low tones that get entirely swallowed by the rumble of the engine when Sally gets the RV started.

Fido's right there with his head in your lap, and you pet him to still the stab of panic in your chest.

The Rook sets his new game to the side of the table and gets out his own deck, which is, ah. Much taller than Vickie's. She stares incredulously at it, then at the Rook, then back at his deck.

"How many cards is that?" Vickie asks at last.

"Two hundred and fifty," the Rook answers nonchalantly. He begins to shuffle his deck with some care.

Forum turns his head from the front seat. "You're a sick fuck, you know that Rook?"

"I am well aware. You may as well talk to Colors for a bit, Vickie." The Rook coughs into his shoulder. "This will take a bit, one-handed."

Sally gets the RV moving, and you keep petting Fido's head; you can hear his tail hitting the Rook's knee as he wags it. "Actually...I was talking to Natalia, just after the vote. And she said she'd like to see you at, um." You air quote. "The next meeting. And that I was welcome if you wanted a plus one?"

Vickie makes a face and starts shuffling her own deck. "Of course she did."

"The next one after Philly," you clarify. "If...if that helps?"

"It doesn't." Vickie sighs. "It's a support group. Natalia and I both go. That is...Natalia goes. I haven't been in awhile."

A glance at Vickie's face softens the question you were about to ask. You look back at the Rook shuffling his monstrosity of a deck of cards with his one hand and just keep your eyes on the cards while you talk.

"I won't bring it up again unless you do," you tell her.

"You want a hand with that?" Vickie asks.

"...With not bringing it up?"

"Not you, the Rook."

Your Wizened friend raises his eyebrows and passes his giant deck to you without a word. You frown in puzzlement but start shuffling it with some care. Even with a lack of practice, that second hand is not optional with this thing.

"Aren't you supposed to be able to shuffle your deck unassisted?" Vickie asks, glancing again at the cards in your hands.

"For competitive play, yes," the Rook rasps. "I would not bring this to most of the competitions it would be legal for."

"You been softballing me, Rook?"

"Teaching," you and the Rook say at the same time. He looks at you, and then continues alone: "This is a game that places a high burden of knowledge on its players. I have been in it for some time. Forum, for longer."

"Wait," you interrupt. "Really?"

The Troll chuckles from the front seat. "Doesn't scan, does it? But I've been playing nerd shit since I was little baby Forum the human kid."

"And I did not start until after my Homecoming," the Rook finishes in a ragged voice; he turns away to cough wetly into his elbow. "It is no fault of yours that you do not yet meet this burden of knowledge, Vickie, and you seem to learn best by doing. Hence the games."

"I guess that tracks," Vickie mutters to herself. You go to pass the deck back to the Rook, and he nods at the Darkling instead; she cuts it, then passes it to its owner, who then cuts hers in turn and pushes it across the table back at her.

You watch for a few turns, as they draw their hands and start playing. The game has an almost ritualistic feel from where you're sitting; there is a lot of formality, announcing of intentions, even a sort of courtesy in the so-often-repeated 'does it resolve?' 'it resolves' question and answer. The Rook once again seems to have a field full of cards that are blue and black in color.

Vickie, for her part, seems to be playing with a lot of white ones.

"I couldn't tell you, even if I wanted to talk about it," Vickie says after a bit. "It's that sort of support group. You'd have to go there and agree not to share it around."

"Under oath?" you ask.

"...As one of my Motley-mates, yeah," Vickie agrees. "Yeah. It's a twice monthly thing, usually. I'm not saying I won't go, I just, I just haven't."

You look at the Rook and are surprised to see his normally grim expression in an absolutely perfect rendition of the universal 'why the fuck are you looking at me you useless moron' expression.

"Is it...weird...that you haven't gone?" you ask slowly.

Vickie shrugs. "Maybe. Kinda. Yeah...hey. Two questions. Actually, three - Rook, can I read that real quick again?"

The Rook nods, spins one of his cards around, and pushes it to Vickie. She reads though it, then again with her finger tracing the words, before she continues talking to you while she passes it back to the Rook.

"One, what would it run me if I wanted some mundane glasswork? As a gift for a friend I haven't spoken to in a little while."

You shrug. "I mean, I could do it for cost of materials -"

Forum clears his throat at you.

"Why don't you do up the request and I'll give you an estimate?" you correct.

Vickie nods to herself. "And two, and try not to die of shock here, but I think we should call up the Valks. Like, tell Morris we did it but ultimately we're going after another Freehold, things might get dicey. Better to be on their good side, an' you still have that Agent's card, right?"

You do still have his card.

As a side question, humans can't be boun d by Changeling Pledges, or can they ?
>>
>>2936163
They can, in fact! You need one or more beings involved who can seal the Pledge, but otherwise, yes, quite easily. There are some that humans can't be part of; notably, they can't swear Oaths in the names of their Keepers (since they don't have any), on the honor of their Seeming (since they don't have one) or in the name of their Court (since they can't be a member of one).
>>
>>2936167
> or in the name of their Court (since they can't be a member of one).

>>2936306
Take it up with four dead Roman citizens & their Seasons
>>
>>2936319
I don't quite get it. (I know that there are 4 seasonal courts, but what Romans ?)
>>
>>2936319
It should be taken up with the American Supreme Court. You can't deny people membership because of their race, it's gotta go both ways!

I demand that the Courts accept non-Changelings who wish to join and meet the same requirements required of other Citizens allowed entry into the Courts.

Racists!
>>
>>2936412
As has been alluded to in earlier New Avalon stories, the four founders of the Seasonal Courts are commonly held to have been Romans or, at the very least, alive during the Roman Empire. Timeframes are fuzzy due to the inconsistent relationship between Changelings and writing things down, but the common English forms of their names are Mother Susan (Spring), Sam Noblood (Summer), Clay Ariel (Autumn), & Snowflake John (Winter). They are held in reverence, and in places have mythic status.
>>
>>2936505
So in the Changeling universe the Roman myths of demigods and supernatural feats could have some truth to them ?
>>
>>2936527
They might. The Lost Pantheon - you know Rachael Reeds as a member - certainly believes so, and they take up the mantle of divinity in the belief that the heroes and demigods of old were the Lost.

You nod to yourself after a moment. "But after I talk to Queen Morris. I don't even know if we're formally on the books yet."

"Well reasoned," the Rook rasps. "And to be frank, I could use your hands. This deck will need a lot of shuffling."

"Jesus Christ," Vickie mutters to herself. "Do I want to know how this thing is somehow competitive?"

Forum laughs from the front seat. "Actually, fun story there - a version of it took the world championship back in the day, if I'm remembering right."

The Rook is as good as his word - quite a lot of shuffling happens, as he searches his deck (he and Vickie keep calling it a 'library'). Vickie plays cautiously, with her eyes on the Rook's half of the table, conserving cards in her hand in marked contrast to how you've seen her play before.

When the Rook plays his first copy of a card named Battle of Wits your Darkling friend reads it twice, swears under her breath, and pushes it back across the table. "That's absurd. And I'm gonna nuke the shit out of it, you know that right?"

"I do," comes the Rook's sanguine reply.

He goes on to take the match two to one. He and Vickie shake hands, and then the Wizened digs out his cell phone and dials before passing it to you.

"What're you -?" you begin.

"Morris," Zoe answers on the other side of the phone after barely one ring.

"Oh. Um. Your Majesty, it's ah, it's, fuck I wasn't ready to dial yet..."

"Out with it, Colors," Zoe encourages. "I really do not have all day."

You lay out the situation as best you can, including having Agent Martin's contact card. Zoe listens (you can almost see her nodding her head along) as you get wrapped up: "So considering the PR and, well, not wanting to cause an actual war, we thought it'd be best to get them on board."

"Not bad thinking. Reeds is on the right track...call your Agent, and if you're gonna be doing meetings I'm gonna suggest the Denny's near the Juniper Building. They've got a party room that ought to do you fine."

"Isn't that a little low rent?" you ask.

"That was not a suggestion, Warlock Knight. I'm calling ahead now. Get your agent there."

Zoe hangs up, leaving you holding the phone. You look at it for a moment and then give it back to the Rook. "Raven was a bit more talkative," you comment.

"Oh, she can be talkative," the Rook replies. "Who do you intend to bring with you? The rest of us should be delivering the door, which means Erin should remain with that group."

"I'd like to go," Forum says from the front seat. "Winter's got a lot of credibility with the Valks, and I can check their bullshit."

"Should you have a norm-" Fancy swerves mid-sentence, "mortal person with you?"

Fancy could involve them more than we're ready for, better to have them be able to write it all off as Fae-shit.
>>

Actually Rook and Fancy would be perfect lookouts. Rook because he's suspicious and can put together detached info, like what kind of car Valk arrives in or if people are watching us, and Fancy because she's a normal person.
>>
>Forum and Vickie

Forum because this kind of thing is Winter's business, and we have at least two very good reasons to be on Winter's good side. Trusting Forum to do his job will get us points with him AND Monroe, and give our bro a chance to prove himself to his Court.

Vickie because she needs to know that we trust her, and because past the anger she's almost as suspicious as the Rook.

Yeah, I'll go with this, too.

Unrelatedly,

> "That was not a suggestion, Warlock Knight...."

OK, but you /literally/ phrased it as one. Not even a shred of ambiguity.

What about Erin?
>>

She's needed to walk the Freehold's representatives through the Hidden Hoard.

Boo.

Oh well. I'm sure Vicky will do nothing to antagonize or *Concern* m/\m Federal Law Officers or whatever Valk is.

> Bring Forum and Rook

Vickie is an even better choice for lookout. Being a Darkling and all.

Called, writing new thread.
