Roll-under system, doubles are critical successes and failures.
> You are David Isaac Fischer, first-year student at Skyrock Academy with a Quirk that lets you calculate out physical interactions with near-perfect accuracy. Most recently, you just completed the 2-mile inaugural race in first, thanks to a surprise by one of your team-mates.

*BZZT BZZT BZZT BZZTBZZTBZZT*
3" above your head, 19" to the left-
You smack your alarm with mathematical precision and pull yourself out of bed. Your rough ride on Joan's back has most of your joints aching; thankfully the school's medical staff gave you some aspirin. You get dressed and check the time. It's 8 AM; just enough time to get some breakfast before classes start.
The dining hall has a sophisticated design using a blend of ceramics and glass walls and ceiling in a naturalistic design, creating the feel of eating in an open-air environment. The school hierarchy is physically reinforced by the hall's layout; seniors eat on a second-floor outcrop designed like the inselberg the Academy rests on, while the freshman class eats in a sunken pit set up against the western wall. Holding your breakfast, you contemplate your seating options:
-The most obvious choice is the Victor's Table; a four-man table set on a small outcrop design above the freshmen dining pit. You can see your other team-mates from last night's race seated there.
-You can spot Hector and Reggie, the first of your fellow students you talked with, seated with Cynthia and Joanna. Joanna appears to be bombarding the rest with questions.
-Apollo, as usual, has magnetically drawn a small group to his table; it looks like Sketchbook Kid and the kid who spent most of his time sleeping on the bus are there next to Billy the bat-kid, Keane, and the punk with bristly hair.
-Harry, the guy whose bodily features keep changing (this morning he has three eyes and four ears), and crystal dude are all seated together; none of them look like morning people.
-Vincent, Rebecca, and the abrasive guy with the claws seem to have been exiled to their own table. Vincent looks offended.

>Who will you sit with?

You earned the privilege; might as well use it for today, at least. You sit down with Duke, Henrietta, and Joan. Henrietta looks like she's about to pass out into her oatmeal; her frizzy hair is pulled back into something meant to be a ponytail, even though it mostly resembles some weird kind of desert shrub. Duke is reading a pocketbook of some kind with one hand, occasionally using the other to deliver shrimp-and-grits to his mouth. Joan... looks perfectly fine, despite the fact that you had to help her into the nurse's office after the race. She has an entire lumberjack breakfast set before her, which she's tearing into like a wild dog.
Henrietta twitches a hand slightly as you sit down.
"Yo, David. You look real fresh."
"Trust me, I only look like this; my shoulders feel like I was just shotputted."
She shrugs. "Same."
Joan pauses with half a pancake leveled at her mouth. "If you really feel that bad, there's this great exercise I know for limbering up your shoulders." The half-cake vanishes into her mouth with much smacking of lips.
"Might have to take you up on that, All Right."
"Huh?"
"All Right. Like All Might, you know? Because you said your Quirk was just 'all right' when David asked you about it, but then you just start leaping around like Mr. Hero himself."
Joan blushes slightly, and shovels a big spoonful of corned beef hash into her mouth.

>Yeah, are you his secret daughter or something?
>How are you not torn up by that?

"What're you reading there, Duke?"
"'S called Midnight in th' Garden of Good an' Evil. 'Sbout a murder in Georgia. Non-fiction, pretty interestin' stuff. Y'all sleep well las' night?"
"As well as I could, I guess. So... who's looking forward to their first day?"
Henrietta shakes her head. "Fuck no, Ball Boy. Everyone's going to be wrecked from that race. I knew this was going to be hard, but... I just hope the teachers take it easy on us."
"It's the first day, Henrietta. That's always easy. And besides, I was the one doing all the running, and I feel fine!"
"Yeah, the first day would be easy if this wasn't Skyrock. I bet they'll drive us like dogs to see how tough we are."
"Can't be as hard as my middle-school math teacher; she was really strict, there were pop quizzes like every other week-"
The conversation meanders about until first bell. Then, the school day begins:
-First period is English, taught by Facade. It's a bit strange to see him as him; for such a renowned hero, he was almost always seen as someone else. Fortunately, he takes things easy today with a general class-led discussion.
-Sadly, Math isn't so laid-back. Shimmer leaps straight into the rigors of trig with barely an introduction. Fortunately, your Quirk makes math easy, but you can see other students fighting through residual tiredness to grapple with the subject.
-Science is taught by Bulwark, who you learn holds a PhD in Geology as well as the title of former Fifty Sentinels reservist. Her first class is dedicated mostly to a lecture about the geological formation of the White Sands Basin's inselbergs and its nature as the world's largest gypsum desert.
And then, the final class before lunch and Hero Training rolls along. The teacher walks in; tall and painfully angular, with an odd, almost sepia-colored skin and faded grey hair. He writes his name on the whiteboard.
"My name is Oswald Brown. My name is not Hangnail, and you will not call me such. This is the Hero Theory course, which will cover the history of the profession, the laws associated with it, and the philosophy and ethical concerns involved." His voice is dry and papery, like something from a desert tomb.
"Now: there is an obvious, fundamental topic that must be addressed before any further discussion can be had on the topic; what is a Hero? That is to say, what separates a Hero from any other member of law enforcement or first response services... Mr. Fischer?"
You jerk up; his voice had nearly put you asleep.
"Yes?"
"What makes a Hero different from a police officer or a firefighter, Mr. Fischer?"

An important thing to note about America is that Quirks are protected under Second Amendment rights; however, you must be specially licensed to use a Quirk in a professional context and using a Quirk to commit a crime carries extremely harsh punishment.

"Well, they aren't state-funded."
"Correct, Mr. Fischer, this is the primary difference. Although professional heroes are empowered to enforce the law, they are not part of the state, but rather private individuals granted certain special powers by the state in order to handle... Ms. Jackson."
"Our 24% average crime rate~"
"Correct. Almost a quarter of the population have embraced crime as a way of life; initially, the massive surge in crime caused by the emergence of Quirks in the general human populace caused a state of martial law nationwide, leading to what historians call 'The Mutant Revolution'- the name was coined before the Japanese term 'Quirk' gained dominance..."

"...eading to massive damage to the Smithsonian campus. Clearly, conventional policing and military tactics were not enough to combat the Quirk-fueled riots sweeping through the nation. It was then that the man we today call the Unknown Hero came onto the scene."
Mr. Brown coughs. "But we will discuss that matter tomorrow. You are dismissed."
The class eagerly bolts to the door, hoping to escape the stuffy confines of Brown's classroom. Back to the food hall for lunch.
As you grab a burger from the cafeteria, a hand claps you on the back. You turn, and stare right into Joanna's grin.
"HEY DAVID! How're you doing?!"
"Uh-fine, I guess?"
"You were really really cool last night, you know? I mean, Harry and I were a super cool team, I think, and we did end up getting second because of Hector having to run back to get everyone, but you got first because of Joan, who, like, no offense or anything, is even COOLER, and I just wondered if you want to sit with me? I mean, you're a cool guy and I think we should hang out and... stuff! So? Will you, huh?"

'Wally' nods at you. "You know we were about to win last night, right? Still, horseshoes, hand grenades. You did good."
Rebecca giggles. "This girl is really energetic, isn't she?"
Billy waves a skinny hand; you notice he has a brace around one wrist. "Shalutashions. Good rashe yeshterday."
Keane just nods at you.

"So... I know where Keane's from"-Keane's eyes plead with you not to mention the name- "But how about the rest of you?"
"I-"
Joanna interrupts Billy with her typical enthusiasm. "I'm from Denton! My dad works for the DMC as a license compliance inspector! I could see the Executive Building from my house, which was really cool and stuff! Sorry, you said something, Billy?"
Billy's yellowed eyes blink. "I'm from Boonevile, Arkanshashsh. Family did... thish and that. You know how it ish."
"Las Vegas. Not the famous one, the other one. Still has a lot of the old architecture. Hey, Billy, do you mind looking over there a bit more? Yeah, that's it. Thanks."
"Mission, Texas. My parents work for a support company that develops advanced textiles." Rebecca taps her blindfold. "They made this for me." The usual dripping malice is curiously absent from her voice.

"You really like drawing, don't you, Wally?"
"It helps me relax and focus. And please, call me Walt."
"Plus his Quirk is like super cool!~"
Walt shakes his head. "I guess. I don't think a lot of people appreciate it, though."
His pencil snaps. Walt sighs and closes his sketchbook. He then reaches his fingers INTO the drawing of the cover and pulls another pencil out of it.

Walter Ward Clarkson. Quirk: "Animator". He can bring images to life! The durability and effectiveness of his animated images is based on their fidelity; a high-quality camera's photo is needed for the best possible results.

"So you have to know how the internal mechanisms of something work to make it?"
"Something like that. Your Quirk seems much more impressive. Being able to instantly understand a situation with only a second's observation is something enviable."

>It is impressive, isn't it?

"I wish it was as easy as just instantly understanding situations. I can only understand as much as I see; and I can't see what's in people's heads. There's always things I don't know, and things I don't even know I don't know."
You wave a hand at Joanna and Rebecca. "Look at those two. My Quirk is useless against Joanna, because it leaves me totally disoriented; I could see a flawless way to defeat her, but all she'd need to do is get me to avert my eyes for a couple seconds and I'd be back to square one. And Rebecca... well, with her Quirk, I suspect it'd be hard to anticipate all the ways it can make problems."
Joanna's chest puffs up. "So I guess you're basically saying I'm cool, right? Like, super-cool!"
"You try too hard, Joanna. That's what's cute about you~"
Billy squeaks out an "I think you're cool! Even if you showing off your Quirk got a bit old."

>Yeah, you're pretty cool, Joanna.
>Rebecca, didn't you say something about your parents making your blindfold?
>You're being really quiet, Keane. You alright?
>So, Billy... you sound like you're from a pretty small town. What's it like?
>>
>>2973581
Yes, although most Quirks don't outright defy physics so much as amplify variables (like strength, speed, etc.) to normally-impossible levels or give humans abilities that they shouldn't naturally have (like producing fire: in the show, at least, I don't think we've seen an energy-emission Quirk that outright defied the normal laws of the movement of fire or electricity, etc.

I guess getting good will mostly involve getting better at math and maybe beefing up to help make use of our quirk. Does our quirk automatically know the math for all of it's calculations or would doing something like studying derivative based statistics allow us to calculate more things?
>>
>>2973649
>You're being really quiet, Keane. You alright?
>>
>>2973690
The Quirk's intuitive and draws on lived experience; the normal human brain can calculate sophisticated physics equations intuitively after all. As you learn more, your Quirk's utilities will expand.

"You're being really quiet, Keane. Are you okay?"
Keane looks up. "Yeah. I just don't talk much."
Walt nods silently to him.
"Well that's no good! You're going to be a hero, Kenny, you need to have stage presence! A hero who everyone just ignored when they said "STOP, VILLAIN!" isn't going to do well!" Joanne thrusts one hand out, palm forward, while resting the other on her hip.
"I-I'm sure I'll think of something."
"Well, you'll have to think of it soon. Hero Training starts in 15 minutes."

Your first day of Hero Training takes place in the open-air "gym" of Skyrock; a large rectangular space boxed in with four white walls. Chalk has been used in the dirt to demarcate a fighting circle. Your teachers are standing in the ring in full work gear.
On the left is a muscular African-American man, his braids pulled back in a ponytail. He's wearing loose white exercise shorts, bulletproof leg and arm-pads, a tight shirt with a bulletproof vest over it, and an onyx visor that wraps around his head at eye level. Eye patterns adorn his work gear.
On the right, a lithe Caucasian woman in her mid-30's is checking the tightness of her gloves. She seems to be dressed in what looks like a blend of a traditional fencer's outfit and a plague doctor's cloak.
The man addresses your group without turning around. "Ah, class, you're here. Glad you found your way to our little arena without getting too lost-physically, at least."
"Nah nah Jahn, don't get too deep on them right off the bat!" The woman gives you a little salute. She has a thick nasal accent. "Good ahfternoon, everybody! Hope you're ready for your Hero Training course! Ahm Fiora Santini and this is Jahn Harris-"
"But you likely know us better as the 'All-Seeing Hero' Argus and the 'Miraculous Hero' Paracelsus."
Ms. Santini fits her helmet, which is stylized to resemble a viper with its jaws open, over her head. "Thaht's right! An' we're gonna be teachin' you the practical side of bein' ah Hero; combat an' rescue! Me doin' the rescue stuff more."
"But today is a combat day, so I will be taking the lead. Now; what is the most important thing in combat? Anyone?"

"Yomi!" You blurt out.
You feel everyone else's eyes upon you.
"For those of you who aren't aware, your classmate is referring to the concept of knowing your opponent, anticipating his movements, and countering them. A good answer, but not the one I'm looking for."
Joan raises her hand. "Knowing when to fight?"
"Another good answer- if we were discussing Hero Ethics. While choosing your battles is wise, let's assume you must fight."
Vincent chuckles. "It's obvious. The only important thing in a fight is winning the fight."
"Half-right. If a confrontation has let to combat, everyone involved has already lost."
Argus closes his hand. "Conviction. Conviction is everything. When you face an opponent, your mind must focus on one thing only; ending the combat with your enemy subdued. You could master every form, have refined your Quirk to its apex, and know everything about your foe- but if your heart wavers and your opponent's does not, you will fail."
He turns his back. "A true villain's heart is filled with a dark conviction; if it was not, they would be easily subdued without a fight, or surrender at once. Therefore, your heart must be filled with a just conviction and pure intentions to victor."

He points back at your group. "White Moon recipients, step forward!"
The group parts to let you through. You come forward along with Joan, Duke, and Henrietta.
John walks up to the back wall and touches a panel. It slides open, and a bristling armory slides out. Virtually every kind of weapon, from simple knives to assault rifles, are represented.
"The guns will only fire rubber bullets designed to bruise instead of kill, and as you can see, the practice weapons are made of advanced polymers designed to not leave lasting injury.
Take whatever weapon you feel comfortable with and come into the circle, please."

Your teacher nods. "If that is your wish. Now, please stand in the corners of the fighting square."
As you walk to your corner, Argus settles into a lotus position in the middle of the arena.
"Okay... what now, teacher?"
"Attack me."
"Excuse me?"
"Attack me. Any way you like, in your own time."

Your group share a look. Argus's hands are resting palms-up on his knees, and what you can see of his face has a perfectly neutral expression.

You can easily hit him from his current position... but you know in your heart it's not going to be that easy.

You've never heard of Argus, but that iron band around his eyes doesn't seem to interfere with his movements. He's also muscular in a limber way, so his Quirk is more likely to be augmentation-based or close-ranged as opposed to energy projection or something more esoteric.
>>
>>2974177
Well, he's got eyes all over his shit so either he's a super dedicated Venom main (good taste if so), his costume theme is random, or its something related to seeing real good.

I have a slight hunch at what the 'All-Seeing Hero' Argus' quirk may be

If Henrietta and David and David where in opposite sides of the squares could they combine their projectiles?

They'd need practice to properly do it but with their Quirks they could probably keep passing things at each other and going with unexpected trajectories while Joan tries to maul the teacher and Duke supports her or tries to asfixiate him.

Probably not gonna work but since the teacher isn't going all out how do you like the idea?
>>
>>2974161
>>2974484
>>2974631
Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. You throw a fastball at Argus's head, adding a bit of curve to it to make its path hard to predict-
Viper-fast, one of Argus's hands swats your ball off trajectory, ricocheting it towards Duke's hands. The resulting sting makes him drop his mock-SMG.
"Intelligent. You're trying to assess what I'm capable of. Well, let me make this easy for you: my Quirk allows me to perceive everything that happens within 50 meters of myself with pin-point accuracy; I knew you were going to throw at that angle because I could sense the movement of your individual muscle groups. This, of course, helps compensate for the fact that my natural eyes and ears are completely non-functional, save for the fact that I cannot watch movies or appreciate color. Everything else I am capable of doing is the result of personal discipline, not my Quirk-"
Joan suddenly sprints out of her corner, fist cocked back to punch the back of Argus's head. You doubt you'll have more than a second before Argus negates her attack.

>Launch a fusillade of throws in the opening (odds uncertain)
>Signal to Henrietta to throw her knives (odds uncertain)
>Wait for Duke to retrieve his SMG, then launch a three-man assault (odds uncertain; high likelihood Joan will be disabled by this point)

Your balls fly like a rain of judgement towards Argus as he grabs Joan by the leg and-tips her over his shoulder into the path of the incoming balls.
"Good, good. Always try to take advantage-"
He kicks one of your balls at Duke's groin, causing him to double over and drop his gun again- "-of a lapse in your enemy's focus."
"Like this, teach?"
A whirl of knives sail out of Henrietta's corner, rising into the air before dive-bombing Argus. As he raises his arms to guard against them, a single knife suddenly zips in a half-circle, burying itself in his chest armor.
"Very well-done. I cannot see the future, nor can I be everywhere at once, so launching an attack from an unexpected angle, or at an inopportune moment, was the best approach; although without your attacks coming in rapid succession, I doubt any of you would have landed a hit; save, perhaps Duke. A gun is a powerful weapon; if you do not hesitate while using it. As for the rest of you: notice how, even though these four have known each other for one day, they have begun to develop good coordination. Even without planning, they were willing to play off each other and take advantage of openings they made. Learn from this."

"Now, I will separate you into sparring pairs to gain a measure of your relative abilities. You will fight with these riot batons; your goal is to pin your opponent on the ground, make them drop their weapon, or strike their neck. A best-out-of-three system will be used for scoring. You will fight three of your classmates today; the first round will be purely random, but the next two will be based on your results in the previous rounds."
-"William Kane, you will fight Hector Peron."
-"Rebecca Jackson, you will fight Vincent Kilenrock."
-"Carey Allen, you will fight Reginald Darger."
-"Peter Blake, you will fight Walter Clarkson."
-"Harry Barber, you will fight Ryan Ferris."
-"John Carlson, Keane Carter."
-"Apollo Jones, Joanna Smith."
-"David Fischer, Joan Schwartz."
-"Henrietta Bonney, Clarissa Hayden."
-"And Duke Labeaux, you will fight Joshua Sheen."
"Since they're both in the circle already...I would like for David and Joan to start us off."

So, Joan. She's strong and we are not. I suppose we could push her off balance?
>>
>>2975362
>Alright
>>
>>2975391
This. If we can make musclewaifu flustered, maybe it'll distract her enough that it'll create an opening for us
>>
>>2975406
She's strong, but is she tough?
Because if not, then we should target joints and try to eliminate her mobility. Maybe test her strength against some compliance techniques.
If she feels pain, then a good come-along can still work.
>>
>>2975419
All we really need to do is make her drop her weapon or strike her neck. If we had anything on us we could throw we could probably hit one of her fingers hard enough to hurt and instinctively drop her weapon. Throwing our weapon is really risky though, she could dodge and we'd be screwed. I don't think winning by pin is a viable option.
>>
>>2975428
Yeah, we'll never overpower her, but most police compliance techniques are all about targeting nerve clusters and hurting like hell.
>>
>>2975435
But do we know where those are IC? I mean, we'd probably know a few places that are tender but I don't know about knowing exactly where on the body we'd have to hit to get a certain reaction.
>>
>>2975458
True. Definitely something we should learn long-term, though. Our Quirk makes precision strikes a natural fit for a fighting style.
>>
>>2975458
the temple, solar plexus, kidney shots, literally any joints, her chin
>>
>>2975468
We don't want to actually hurt her so I'd think temple is out, solar plexus would probably crack a few ribs if we're not careful, a kidney shot I'll definitely give you, I'm not sure if we know the location of joints on the human body, and I doubt we could get close enough for a chin shot without getting KO'd.

Kidney shot is definitely the most viable option, those hurt like a bitch. But can we get close enough without going down?
>>
>>2975529
>I'm not sure if we know the location of joints on the human body
Anon, do you know what joints are?
Pretty sure we know where knees, elbows, wrists, shoulders, knuckles, hips, and ankles are.
>>
>>2975542
Oh yeah, I was thinking of nerve clusters. There's still the question of exactly how we'll hit those without getting hit.
>>

Oh yeah, that's something to study long term in order to refine our fighting style.

You stand in one corner; Joan in the other. She tosses her baton up and down playfully.
"Just so you know, I'm not gonna just let you win!"
"I-I'd certainly hope not!" Did you just stutter?
You think about the best approach to this; obviously, you can't pin her, so... try and strike her hand or her neck?
You see Joan's legs drop into a sprinting stance. Based off her "normal" speed from last night, she's going to cross the arena and hit you in 2 seconds at most. There isn't going to be any time to react once she's moving; you'll have to decide your tactics now.

You nudge Joan while your classmates are squaring up. "You would have won if my timing was even slightly off. The gap between us in terms of power is massive."
Joan shrugs. "Yeah, but that doesn't matter if I don't improve. You were able to predict my movements; if I want to be a pro, I can't let that happen."
In the ring, Peter flips his baton over a few times while Walter digs through his pockets. Both of them just stare down at each other across the arena.
"Begin!"
Walter starts sprinting in; suddenly, every hair on Peter's body stands on end. He waves an arm and a dozen small needles prick at Walter's right arm. His hand opens in shock and his baton bounces off of the ground.
"Mr. Clarkson, pull those hairs out of your arm. Again!"
Peter Blake. Quirk: "Porcupine". He can stiffen his body hairs, turning them into quills! In this state, he can even detach them from his body easily.
In the second round, Walter pulls a photo out of his pocket and flings it at Peter as soon as the round starts. The photo unfolds mid-flight into a weighted net that falls on top of Peter. While the punk struggles to remove it with one arm, Walter simply walks up and pokes him in the neck with his baton.
"Good. Again!"
Peter doesn't even bother to move from his corner in the third round: his hairs rise up and he starts throwing them at Walter... who pulls a rumpled magazine page out of his pocket and snaps it into a riot shield. Peter tries to hold his ground, but the baton in his hand goes flying once he catches the receiving end of Walter's bull rush.
"Well done, Mr. Clarkson. Jones, Smith; forward."

You can see Joanna's permanent grin is full of nervous energy as she steps into the ring. "Hey... could you, like, not aim for my face, okay? I don't want skin cancer there."
Apollo laughs. "I'm not gonna use my Quirk on you, girl. It wouldn't be fair, since you can't really use yours."
"Really! Thanks!"
Two short rounds later, Joanna trudges back into the stands, rubbing her wrist.
"Oww... that really stings..."
"Sorry! Here, let me show you what you were screwing up..."
"Jackson, Kilenrock."

Rebecca giggles as Vincent rolls his shoulder. "Just imagine I'm a villain~"
"That requires very little imagination."
Vincent seems to be using some kind of martial art- maybe that Brazilian one with the sticks, the name eludes you at the moment- but Rebecca, despite lacking form, is taller, has a longer reach, and seems to be unnerving Vincent with her mutterings and shrieks that accompany each swing. She takes the set 2-1.
"What'd daddy think, Vincent?~ His own son not winning~"
"He'd think that this sort of training isn't necessary for me."
"And he would be wrong, Mr. Kilenrock. Everyone should be able to defend themselves. Sheen, Labeaux."

Duke steps into the ring opposite....crystal guy. He's wearing a blue formal suit today.
"Mr. Lambeaux. You're a transformer, yes? This will be an interesting fight."
"Sure. Ain't thrown down with a proper hetromorph before. Well, les' go."
Duke's body starts boiling to smoke-and then Sheen's face flares into blinding light as he sprints, and Duke's arms come up over his eyes. THWOCK. The baton goes spinning out of Duke's hands.
Joshua Sheen. Quirk: "Crystalline". He can alter the facets of his crystal-like body, altering the way it reflects and refracts light!
"Making an amateur mistake like that? How did you get into this school in the first place?"
"By not bein' an asshole, asshole."
"Both of you, enough. Again."
Duke comes in swinging with his head down, and manages to tackle Sheen to the ground hard. You hear a tinkling noise, and Sheen yells in pain.
"You OAF! You just put a crack in my back!"
"Nah, erryone has one of those."
"Lambeaux, off him. Sheen; can you fight?"
"Yes. It just hurts like a- quite badly."
"Then fight. Again!"
Lambeaux takes the third round handily; you can see that Sheen's moving gingerly, trying to put as little stress on his back muscles as possible.
"Kane, Peron."

Kane stretches his wings as he gets into his corner, their vast, leathery wingspan casting a shadow over his half of the arena. "Pleashe be careful with me. My bonesh are fragile."
"I will try my best."
"I suppose I should mention this; Mr. Kane, please do not fly during this exercise."
"Undershtood, Mishter Argush."
The first round starts with Hector sprinting out of his corner; and being slapped across the face by one of Billy's arms. The other swats his neck with the baton. Not very surprising to you; Hector's fairly short and Billy's over seven feet tall. What does surprise you is the extent of the bruising his "slap" leaves on Hector's face; seems like he's a lot stronger than those lanky arms would lead you to believe.
Round two, you know, will be different; with those bruises there's no way that Hector's Quirk didn't activate. Sure enough, Hector bursts forward towards Kane, who doesn't seem to be moving. Instead, he's just stretched his wings, closed his eyes, and-
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
The sound seems to be louder than the whole world. You don't just hear it; you feel it in your teeth and sinuses. You involuntarily cover up your ears in an attempt to shut it out. When it stops, the noise keeps ringing in your ears and the world seems to swim around you. Through the haze, you can see Hector doubled over, his baton discarded. You can hear Argus's muffled voice calling the next group up.
William Kane. Quirk: "Chiroptera". His divergent biology grants him a number of bat-like abilities, including flight, echolocation, near-immunity to disease, and the ability to generate a stunning ultrasonic "scream"! His muscles are strong, but his bones are hollow.

The next match is between Reggie and the guy who was napping on the bus. He looks like he just woke up, even though you're pretty sure he was watching every match.
"Hey, are you alright, man? You look really sweaty,"
"I'll show you sweaty! Don't underestimate me!"
"Dude. That wasn't some kind of dig or anything."
"...Let's just fight."
Reggie isn't just sweaty, he's clumsy with his stick, too. Carey easily takes him 2-0.
"Mr. Darger, I see you will need some remedial combat lessons. Carlson, Carter."

John Carlson, it emerges, is the guy with a constantly-changing anatomy. He appears to have four arms and horns at the moment. Keane takes one look at him and drops his baton. "I forfeit."
"Explain your reasoning."
"I don't have a lot of direct combat skills, and Carlson's Quirk makes a fight between the two of us in my current state wholly lopsided."
Argus nods. "I accept this- we shall cover this in remedial training."
Carlson looks dejected. "Aww...."
"Bonney, Hayden."

Clarissa glares at Henrietta across the arena. "Come on, cowgirl, show me what you got!"
"Yeah... this is gonna be easy."
Henrietta hefts her baton, then sends it whirling across the battlefield. It swats Clarissa's baton out of her hand and sails back into Henrietta's grasp.
"See?"
Argus nods. "Unorthodox, but I accept it. Again."
"You're right, that was easy. You're... really strong, Henrietta."
"I know, right? This isn't even a contest." Henrietta puffs up her chest as Clarissa walks towards her. "Watch: I can beat you with my eyes closed!" Henrietta closes her eyes and throws her baton again. Clarissa smacks the baton out of the air.
"Sorry!"
Henrietta looks shocked. "...How?" Her face blanches. This whole situation seems... weird to you. You've only known Henrietta for a day, but this seems very different from how she normally acts.
Henrietta wildly throws her baton a third time, and Clarissa drops to the ground and lets it sail over her.
"I...I..." Tears start flowing from Henrietta's eyes as she returns to her seat.

And then Harry, in all his goth glory, stands across from Bone Guy. As he picks up his baton, you see his hand twitch and erupt into a cluster of bones anchoring the baton firmly in their midst.
Ryan Harris. Quirk: "Ossify". He can control his own abnormally-hard skeletal system, causing it to grow and mutate wildly! His body can regenerate from any injuries caused by his own skeletal distortions.
"Last chance to tap out, Harry."
Harry shakes his head. "Not gonna happen."
"Fine." Ryan winces slightly as a half-dozen bone spikes thrust up from his collarbone and begin weaving into each other, forming a gorget of ivory. "Just don't hate me later."
Harry holds the baton like a knife as he comes at Ryan; and is met by a brutal backhand followed by the baton-nub smacking his own baton into the dirt.
"Again."
This time, Harry starts sprinting, baton ready- and Ferris extends his left hand. His gorget retracts and his bone-nub goes back to being a hand as his left arm erupts into a revolting, slithering mass of bone that rapidly encircles Harry's torso and encases him from the chest-down in bone. "Do standing pins count, teacher?"

"Fischer, Clarkson- come forward. You are to start us off."
You take your position in the arena. Walter shrugs at you. "To be honest, I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose this; but I think it'll be a good learning opportunity."
You can see Walter's off hand is digging around in his pockets; no doubt to pull out an illustration that will help him.

"Again."

As you walk back, you see Walter's pocket bulge a bit. As the next round starts, you see why as he pulls out a taser gun and levels it at you.
You have the angle of the dodge solved by the time he pulls the trigger; but are you fast enough to get out of the way?

That's pretty good, and fits with the colorful and over the top aesthetic MHA has.. The Number Man I was referring to (also known as Harbinger) didn't even wear a costume in his later years. And even as a teen, his costume was basically just a really baggy hoodie with a snarling demon mask. Not exactly the kind of thing a hero would be wearing. I do like the name Harbinger though, maybe we can ourselves that too?

"Sorry, but it was the best move I could make."
"I get it... it just stings."

The next fight is Henrietta and Reggie. It looks like whatever causes him to sweat slime is working overtime, because he looks like he just got a bucket of water dumped over his head.
"Okay... DEFINITELY not going down this time!"
"Dude... do you need a towel?"
"OH YEAH?! Have you thought that maybe you need a towel!??!?" His voice cracks at the end of "towel".
"Whatever, greaseball. Let's do this."
THWACK. THWACK. And Reggie goes limping back to the bleachers while Henrietta desperately tries to wipe the bits of sweat-slime off of her baton.

Harry and Keane are up next. The latter seems a lot more confident than during his "match" with Carlson.
"Alright, let's get this over with." Keane just nods.
Harry's got a reach advantage on Keane and they're roughly in the same weight class, but to your astonishment, Keane seems to have the skill advantage. He takes quick, swirling steps and ducks and weaves around Harry's strikes, waiting until an opening presents itself before striking the neck with surgical precision. Harry gets a hit on him, but the match goes Keane's way. Harry extends a hand once the match is over.
"Damn. You have some wheels on you, don't you?"
Keane just shakes his hand. When he sits down, you notice him suddenly exhale and start to tremble.

Clarissa and Rebecca are next into the arena. Rebecca flashes her one of her razor-edged smiles. "I really don't like you."
"That makes two of us, you psycho bitch. Tell me, did you parents give you that stupid blindfold because they didn't want to look you in the eyes anymore?"
"I'LL GODDAMN KILL YOU YOU SHALLOW WHORE!!!" The teasing edge drains out of Rebecca's voice, replaced with acid. She throws herself at Clarissa- who sidesteps and strikes her neck.
"Nice try sweetie!~"
"I'LL KILL YOU!"
Rebecca whirls around and punches Clarissa in the face.
"Rebecca! You are disqualified. I know it is difficult, but keep your emotions in control. Do not let them use you."
Clarissa has a knowing smirk as she sits down. Rebecca looks half-fuming, half-...scared?
>>
>>2978454

Ah, Clarissa's Quirk lets her intensify emotions!

Apollo and Billy square up after the girls sit down. Apollo flexes his offhand palm.
"Look, man, you wanna do a truce? You don't do that scream thing, I won't use my Quirk."
"Shorry, but I don't think that'sh in the shpirit of thish."
Apollo shrugs. "Okay, but I'm gonna warn you; these bad boys HURT."
The first round opens with Apollo spreading his off-hand open and a ray of blaring white pouring forth from his palm. Billy runs forward into the light, even as you see the skin on his shoulder start to turn a deep, aching red-and suddenly snaps open his wings and swings them in front of him, kicking up a cloud of dust. In the scuffle, you see a baton roll onto the side of the arena. When the dust clears, Billy is busy grabbing his shoulder and wincing, empty-handed.
"Billy, aloe vera. Again."
Apollo warms up another light-ray, but Billy's wings snap open again and launch him into the air. He falls onto Apollo like a lead balloon and pins him to the earth.
"On the edge, Billy, but acceptable. Again."
Billy braces himself against the ground and launches himself across the arena, swatting Apollo on the wrist before he can raise his hand.
"Man. You're tough, aren't you?"
"I guessh."

Joan steps up into the arena- but Joshua remains seated.
"Mr. Sheen, step forward."
"Are you joking? That gorilla will break me in half!"
"Very well; you forfeit. But I would suggest you get used to minor skin fractures."
Joan looks dejected.

Next is Peter and Vincent. They give each other a hard stare as they walk into the arena.
"You think you're a big deal because of your dad?"
"No. I think I'm a big deal because I'm me."
Their fight is impressively technical; Vincent's form being countered by short bursts of hair-needles from Peter. Eventually, Vincent pulls out a win.

Hector shakes his head as Joanna steps into the arena.
"This is not fair to either of us, teacher! Neither of us will learn anything from this!"
"C'mon! I listened to Apollo, so I feel like I stand a chance now!"
"...Fine, but do not expect me to restrain myself because you are of the fairer sex!"
Either Hector isn't as good of a fighter as he seems, or he lied when he said that; you spot several openings that Hector fails to take advantage of in their fight. Joanna does manage to acquit herself better in this round; she even manages to get a strike on Hector.

John and Duke square off across from each other. John smiles and extends one of his arms.
"Fair play?"
"Fair play."
As the round starts, Duke runs in; and has his legs swept out from under him by John's lower arms. A quick blow to the wrist makes him drop his baton.
"I thought y'all said fair play!"
"Can't help my body."
"Fine. So tha's how it is, huh?"
The next round starts with Duke bursting into a cloud of smoke and swirling around John. Suddenly, he coalesces to his left and smacks him in the neck.
"I thought you said fair play!"
"I can't help mah Quirk."
John glowers. "Alright then."
As the two square up for the next round, you notice points on John's neck start to pucker. His face falls. "Aw crap."
The puckers "burst" into four eyes-two on each neck.
"This is going to give me such a headache."
John Carlson. Quirk: "Darwin". His body is in a constant state of mutational flux; minor mutations emerge and fade based on their situational usefulness, while larger mutations emerge in times of stress. He can't control when or where mutations form, or what form they take, although he can force a "reset" with enough effort.
Duke erupts into a smoke cloud again; John starts slowly circling, until the smoke starts to rush towards a point behind him. He whirls around and smacks the baton out of Duke's hand mid-strike.
"Nice try-oh, oh, oh, spun around too fast..."
John drunkenly lumbers back to his seat, while Duke strides back to his.

And then there was Carey and Ryan. Ryan flexes one hand contemplatively. "Gonna give you the same deal I gave the last guy. One chance to give up."
"Thanks, I guess, but... nah."
"Fine."
Ryan opens with turning his off-hand into a snaking wave of bone again- and Carey steps aside as if it were an annoying dog. He touches its side as he calmly walks towards Ryan.
"So... yeah, you can't move with all that bone, right? Yep, looks like it."
He taps Ryan's neck. "Boop."
The bone-stuff retracts as Ryan re-grows a gorget in his corner and turns his right hand into a mess of bony growths again.
"Has anyone told you you probably have anger issues?"
Ryan runs at him in response; and suddenly stops as Carey lays an outstretched palm on his chest.
"Seriously, man. Get that sorted out."
He taps the back of Ryan's neck. "Boop."

"Very well. The third, and final, round of your combat assessment will be:
-Carey Allen versus Clarissa Hayden
-William Kane versus David Fischer
-Apollo Jones versus John Carlson
-Henrietta Bonney versus Joan Schwartz
-Duke Lambeaux versus Walter Clarkson
-Vincent Kilenrock versus Ryan Ferris

"Let's do this, Billy."

You try to asses Billy's fighting style. He's got the reach advantage, he's more mobile, and he has that scream... Overall, he seems to have the advantage in every aspect- save one... His Quirk gives him a variety of bat-like qualities in addition to pneumatic bones. Maybe there's a way to use that.

As the round starts, you arc your hand back as if to throw- and Kane crouches and folds his wings around himself like a shield. As you sprint in, you wonder how it must be to be Kane; over seven feet standing, but positively average when he has his long, gaunt limbs folded up. About three paces away, Kane seems to realize what you're trying to do; his wings spray a cloud of dust into your face as he snaps them back and starts unfolding to his full height. You score as light of a swat as you can on Kane's neck. Just from the resistance the baton encounters, you can tell his muscles must be like steel cables.
"Again."
You go back to your corners. As the round starts, you see Billy start to inhale and his eyes close. He's about to scream again. The only way to win you have any confidence in is to throw your baton at him from across the arena just before he starts to scream: something you calculate has a 25% chance of succeeding. "Good luck, you two!"
Joan gives you a broad smile; Henrietta smirks a bit and gives you a thumbs-up.
"So... how fast do you think you can run, All Right?"
"I dunno... maybe 95 mph?"
"Okay, so-fast enough to dodge this?"
Henrietta snap-throws her baton, and Joan bursts up her flank; a quarter of the way to Joan's former location, Henrietta's baton violently reverses course and sails back into her hand. Henrietta twirls past Joan's swing at the neck and taps Joan's own.
"Ooh, doesn't look like it. That was really cool, though."
"T-thanks! I didn't expect that."
Joan walks back to her corner for the second round.

As the second round starts, Joan starts...staring Henrietta down.
"So... aren't you going to do something?"
"Not until you do!"
Henrietta's brows raise. "Okay..."
She walks slowly into the middle of the arena. Joan doesn't move. Henrietta winds up to throw. Joan doesn't move. Henrietta throws- and like a lightning bolt Joan bursts forward and smacks the baton out of the air.
"Yeah, should have seen that one coming."
Henrietta grabs her baton and walks back to her corner.

"Alright, so... this is the match point. I hope you aren't going to hold back, Henri!"
"That is the worst nickname ever."
"Better than 'All Right'."
"Fair. Let's do this."
Henrietta raises her baton to throw- and Joan launches hers so fast you swear it makes a whipcrack. Henrietta's baton is knocked clean out of her hand.
"...Wow. Didn't see that coming. That was pretty cool."

The other fight that gets your attention is Carey and Clarissa- the two people you wouldn't have expected, at first glance, to be racking up victories like they have. Carey shrugs at Clarissa as they square up.
"I'm gonna be honest with you here: not a fan."
"Yeah? You got a problem with me, huh?"
Carey's face redden's a bit. "Yeah, thought that was how that worked."
"...What?"
"Your Quirk. Like, I saw how those other girls you fought started acting crazy when they started talking to you, so I figured your Quirk had to work something like this:"
Clarissa Hayden. Quirk: "Goad". Her words can cause people's emotions to start rampaging out of control! She can't control how they initially feel or how they'll act on their feelings.
"So, am I right?"
"Yeah, but it doesn't matter, because- you suck, and you're going to lose!"
"Yeah, now you're trying to make me feel bad, right? Thing is- I kind of have to respect you for your words to matter at all, and I really don't care about users like you. Let's just fight."
Carey is clearly unpolished, but Clarissa seems shaken; the first round goes firmly in the former's favor.

"H-how are you just ignoring me?"
"Told you; words only have as much weight as you give them. Plus, I'm a pretty calm guy; there's not much you can do to make me more calm."
"Oh, really?"
As the second round starts, Clarissa sprints, then flips right at Carey- his reflexes lag just a second behind, and she swats his baton out of his hand.
"I'm not just a one-trick pony, you know."
"...You increased my calmness just enough to mess my reflexes up. Clever. Let's see you try that twice."

Clarissa launches into another gymnastic maneuver right at Carey; and suddenly stops cold and falls when Carey's hand brushes her. He leans down and taps her shoulder. "Two tricks isn't enough for me."
Carey Allen. Quirk: "Third Law". He can negate the kinetic energy of anything he touches! It puts a proportional amount of stress on his body based on the force involved.

"Very well. With your combat assessment completed- observe."
Argus sets a small ball on the ground and taps it; a hologram blossoms to life above. "These are your observed proficiency in solo combat, based on these three matches."

"Those of you who scored poorly, I would advise using your free time to hone your skills. Those of you who did well; do not become complacent! If you do not develop your skills while your companions grow, you will not remain at the top for long. Class dismissed. Jones, Allen, Hayden, Carlson; remain behind."

As the majority of your class drains out of the training arena, you take a look at the afternoon sky. You have some free time up ahead, now.

Joanna bursts into your field of view out of nowhere, arms waving wildly.
"HEY, MR. NUMBER TWO! THAT'S SUPER COOL! I thought I'd be higher, maybe, but at least I'm not last! Me and Billy and a couple of his friends are going to go check out the Terrace Gardens because one of them said there was some kind of secret there! You can come if you want because that seems like the sort of thing you'd be good at! So, see you there? See you there!"
...And just like that, she's off again
.
As you recover from Tropical Storm Joanna, you feel a hand on your shoulder and whirl to see Henrietta's lightly-freckled face. "Hey, Ball Boy. How's it feel to be number two?"

"Sure, that'd be cool, but there's this thing in the Terrace Gardens I want to check out first. Want to come with?"
Henrietta shrugs. "Yeah, sure. So what is this 'thing'?"

"A mystery? Are you kidding me?"
"Nooo~pe! I heard the seniors talking about meeting up at a 'hidden room' in the Terrace Garden that can only be found in a certain way!"
You take a look around the garden atrium as Henrietta and Joanna argue. The Terrace Garden is built into a series of natural shelves that (supposedly) were cut into the Skyrock by the Pueblo people sometime in deep pre-Columbian history. Snaking caves and spiral staircases join the four levels (themed after the Great Plains, Cross Timbers, Chihuahuan Desert, and the Rocky Mountains, according to the tour book), which are shielded from the elements by a large glass wall running down the southern cliff face and are carefully climate-controlled. Various monuments to important events in recent American history are scattered throughout the levels. You could see how something could be hidden in the garden; its layout seems borderline-byzantine, and the map provides very few details.
"Yeah, a hidden room. Sure. That definitely sounds like a real thing that seniors wouldn't invent as a prank on freshman at all."
"So we agree!"
Billy sighs slightly through his pitted nostrils. "Joanna, I think you need to work on your people shkills."
Joshua shakes his head. "Leave her be, William. Let her revel in her delusions while the three of us amuse ourselves with this excuse for a walking tour of the gardens!"
"It'sh really weird that you call me that."
Ryan hasn't said anything through this whole conversation, but you can feel his stare drilling into you.
Henrietta pulls on your shirt. "C'mon, Mr. Two, let's just take a look around."
"Great! I'll go with you two, Billy and his friends can form a group to cover more ground! Now let's split up and look for clues!"
As you walk down the stairwell to the Great Plains level, Henrietta mutters to you. "C'mon, you can't believe this, right?"

"This place was built by Citadel Architectures; they do a lot of the contract work for major hero teams. Almost anything could be possible with that kind of firm."
"How do you know this sort of stuff?"
"It was in the brochure."
"Oh. Yeah, I kind of skimmed that thing."
"I didn't! Memorized it cover to cover! Now c'mon you two stop dragging your feet!"
The Great Plains level is full of various aromatic brush and grasses; small walking paths are marked out along the small mounds of earth used to simulate the gentle swells of the prairie. Joanna leads you to a little knoll with a few sculptures atop it.
"This looks like a good place to start!" Joanna starts staring inquisitively at the monolith in the center; a plaque notes that it was installed five years ago in celebration of the last repairs started after the Mutant Revolution being completed. A number of busts nearby seem to represent Presidents Cruz (president during the Mutant Revolution), Rodriguez (signed the bills creating the DMC into law), Malone (The first heteromorph President, rendered here in all his horned glory), and Takeshi (the ex-hero turned politician). Something about the busts strikes you as odd...

The busts are all staring in the same direction; Takeshi's eyes are notably offset because of this. You quickly trace a mental line from their eyes to their focal point of view; a bench a couple knolls over.
"Hey, Joanna, I think I found something."
"OOH, REALLY? LEMME SEE!"
You point to the bench. "These statues look like they're staring at that bench over there."
"Well, leeet's goooo!"
Joanna sprints off towards the bench. You jerk a head towards it at Henrietta. "You coming?"
"Sure; pretty sure it's just a coincidence, though."

You meet up with Joanna at the bench; she's pouring over every inch of the decorated steel.
"Okay, so it's dedicated to someone's mom, I think, but that was tacked on later, it looks like... ooh, oh, here's something, look!" She points to the seat, which is seated facing the windows. An embossed design of a hawk holding a compass is imprinted on it.
"...What?"
"Think about it, David! Look, South is"-she waves a hand towards the windows "-somewhere over there, but the compass needle in this detail is pointing... over there!" She points at a cave-mouth opening. "I think that means the next clue's somewhere in there!"

(Sorry, had a busy busy Saturday this week!)
"Alright, let's check it out then."
You and Henrietta follow Joanna into the cave opening. A small side-tunnel seems to lead to the lower level, but Joanna ignores it and walks towards the back of the cave. At the mouth of a small tunnel at the back, a hologram projector activates and shines a bright orange CATIOUN in mid-air.
"Yo, Joanna? This was fun and all, but I really think we shouldn't go back there. This is one of those restricted zones or something, yeah?"
"No it isn't! I mean, look!" Joanna gestures at the sign. "It says 'catioun', which I don't think is even a word, and it's orange! It's probably there to keep people away from the secret!"
"Or the holoprojector's on the fritz or has a low battery, and 'Catioun' is a typo? We could get expelled or really hurt if we end up stumbling into a cave-in or some kind of booby trap!"
"That doesn't sound very likely to me! And even if it is, the three of us can beat it together!"

>Joanna, this is dangerous and against school rules.

You pull your phone out of your pocket and turn on its flashlight app. It looks like the tunnel curves out of sight... which strikes you as weird; the curve looks too smooth to be a natural formation, or the work of Stone Age cliff peoples.
"Weird. Looks like an artificial tunnel; probably means its safe enough."
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean we should go in! I mean, it's our first day here. We should ask a teacher about it or something!"

"I think we should go get the others; this definitely seems like something."

"It could simply be a coincidence, you realize."
You shake your head at Joshua. "Its a clue leading to a clue leading to a suspicious sign. It really doesn't seem coincidental."
Billy's ears twitch in the general direction of the tunnel. "Tunnel turnsh left, goesh down shlightly for about two hundred feet, and then theresh a door... with shome kind of mushic behind it, I think."
"This must be the next part of the mystery! Let's GOO!!!"
Before any of you can respond, Joanna barges through the holosign and around the curve.
Henrietta runs her hands through her frizzled mess of hair. "Well, I guess we'd better make sure she doesn't knock herself out on accident or something."
The cave walls of the tunnel quickly turn to metal around the corner and follow a gentle slope down to a metal door. The door is hanging open. You take a look inside...

Joanna's looking around with a crestfallen face at what looks to be some kind of storage room. Bean bags, mats, and a couple of busted-up chairs are scatted throughout. One corner has a mini-fridge plugged in. An upperclassman is smoking grass behind a shelving unit. He clumsily tries to hide his joint when he spots you.
"Hey... you're some of the froshes, right? Welcome to the Danger Room."

"So... this is the big mystery? A hidden place where upperclassmen smoke and drink?"
The upper shrugs his shoulders. "I think this place is some kind of panic room in case a syndicate hits the school, but those of us in the know use it as a place to chill out where teachers aren't going to catch us."
Joanna crosses her arms. "This is really lame: I thought this would, like, be some kind of secret base or something."
"Isn't it though?"
Henrietta just walks over to the minifridge and digs through it. She pulls out a six-pack.
"Hey, I'm not complaining. How do you guys get this stuff here?"
The smoking kid jerks a thumb at himself. "Yours truly. Teleporter. People slip me some cash to jump to the nearest town and get them stuff they don't sell at the school store."
"Nice. I'll pay you back for these."
Henrietta cracks open a can and shakes another one at you.

"The doctorsh shay I shouldn't drink. Too much of a rishk of injury."
"What is it, a pilsner?" Joshua takes a can and sips it. "Ah: American-style. Not as earthy as an Urquell, but it will do."
Ryan's fingers briefly erupt into a thin web of ligament which yanks a can off of the six-pack. He shotguns it, crushes the can, and turns to the upperclassman.
"Got a dime?"
"You got the cash? I'm the plug, not a charity."
Ryan hands him a ten, and the upper flickers out of existence. He reappears in a minute with a baggie full of hash and papers.
"Here."
Ryan starts to dexterously roll a joint with practiced fingers.
"Ryan, that stuff's against school policy, you know- and besides, you're underage-"
Ryan puts the joint in his mouth with one hand while the other salutes Joanna.

"I want to help other people, but I also want to prove something. People with intelligence-augmenting Quirks like mine... no one thinks of us as Heroes. Usually, people think we're going to go into support work or seek a Practice License to use our Quirk in the private sector. Most people are more likely to see us as Villains than Heroes. I want to show people that someone with my kind of Quirk can be a great Hero too."
Ryan stares at you for a long moment... and then nods.
"I can respect that." He takes a long drag, then stubs out his joint. "So what now?"
Joanna sighs. "Since the big mystery turned out to be lame and stupid, I want to do something cool. I heard there was a museum dedicated to the alumni and teachers of Skyrock in the main building; I'm gonna go there."

"I said I would, didn't I?"

Your walk around campus is highly informative:
-The "center" of Campus is Justice Square; a large paved public space dominated by a monument to the Unknown Hero. A large number of benches set into the sidewalk provide seating for students who want to wait in the hot, arid New Mexican sun between classes for whatever reason.

-The primary campus building, a white Brutalist block crouched on the north face, is called George W. Bush Hall in the brochure but seems to be referred to by most people as "The Box". It's apparently named after one of the last pre-superhuman Presidents, but your familiarity with turn-of-the-century history's a bit weak: you vaguely remember him being President during one of the biggest Quirkless attacks on US citizens ever. Anyways, The Box houses the "normal" and Hero Theory classrooms in its three squat floors.

-Seated at the West end of the Square is the Annex: a mountain-like Modernist ziggurat that houses the cafeteria, school store, student lounges, Museum of Heroics, and administrative offices. You can see flak guns mounted near the peak, artfully disguised as statues.

-Above the entrance to the sunken Terrace Gardens rests the Ironsides Training Complex; the arena used for the simpler Practical Heroics classes, the gym, an obstacle course, and basketball, volleyball, and soccer courts.

-Finally, flanking the access road to the East are the student dormitories (teachers apparently live in a bunker beneath the Annex): the ascending halls of Hawk, Osprey, Falcon, and Eagle. Floors are gender-segregated, but the whole building isn't: the teachers trust that the curfew and the on-duty teachers will prevent anything untowards from happening.

Having taken in the sights, such as they are, you and Henri end up hanging out near the edge of the west face during the sunset, occasionally chucking pebbles over the safety fence.
"I heard they'll rent dune buggies to sophomores so they can mess around on the grounds. Want to try and corner one later so we can see some of the remote training sites?"
You shrug. "Maybe."
Henrietta nods. "So... what do you think about Joan?"
"What do you mean?"
Henrietta's rock does several loops before plummeting off into the desert. "Well, shit dude, you know. Her Quirk's crazy powerful; we'd have been dead meat in the race without her. And I don't care what the scores say, if we had been fighting for real today, I'm pretty sure she could have pasted everyone there; teachers included."
"I'm not sure about that..."
"Yeah, but it'd be possible at least. I mean, power like that's got to be a bit scary, you know? But at the same time, she seems so nice that you forget about that." Henrietta sighs. "So what do you think?"

>So... what do you think about Joan?
Hoh boy, now that's a loaded question if there ever was one.
> if we had been fighting for real today, I'm pretty sure she could have pasted everyone there; teachers included.
OK, that's a bit easier to answer.
>She really is something, isn't she?
"Doesn't mean we can't keep up though. We just gotta work a bit harder to do so."

Bump limit is 750 posts I'm pretty sure

Yes, bump limit is 750 but threads auto sage after 3 days.

"She really is something, isn't she? Still, that doesn't mean we can't try to keep up."
Henrietta shrugs. "Guess we'll just have to find out, won't we? Now come on, let's go grab something to eat."

New bread tomorrow.

If you got any questions, throw them here and I'll answer them provided its not a spoiler. Also I'll update the factbook tomorrow with a summary of each character's looks, style, and personality, as well as a little thing about the staff.

Can we train our body to near inhuman condition like all those heroes in the show do, despite their quirks having nothing to do with enhancing their body?
>>
>>2993357
Absolutely: that's what the gym is there for. Most Pro Heroes condition parts of their body to near-Olympian levels as part of their training unless they have a Quirk that focuses on long-range or indirect combat.
>>
>>2993382
Keep in mind Stain was 6/5 speed all from training, none of it was his quirk.

With that bein said which styles should we as a normie learn to counter powerhouses like Joan or bat boy?
>>
>>2993426

Sumo. We bulk. We eat all the baby....back ribs. We become Fat Bastard.
>>
>>2993446
>We eat all that baby
More like that ass. But speaking seriously, we really should make an effort to train up our speed. I mentioned earlier that our biggest problem so far was that despite how quickly we can process a situation, our body cant quite keep up with what we want it to do.
Yet.
>>
>>2993537
Agreed we ned at least a 4/5 speed

5/5 or even 6/5 would be better.

also technique gains, we can't win in brute force so we'll need to fight smart and cheat like mad.

>Keep in mind Stain was 6/5 speed all from training, none of it was his quirk
I mean that's at least partially because he's a walking tribute to the original Eastman and Laird incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
And here's where shit gets crazy and recursive:
The Turtles are a tribute to and affectionate parody of Daredevil, especially Frank Miller's run. The first Turtles issue "strongly implies" on page 16 that the radioactive shit that mutated the Turtles was the SAME shit that gave Matt Murdock the Radar Sense without the years of training everyone else needed to develop it.
And Frank Miller was one of the first western comic artists and writers to be inspired by manga specifically untranslated volumes of Lone Wolf and Cub were a HUGE inspiration on a young Frank (who didn't read moon at all and had to rely solely on the art to follow the story).
Shit's circular, yo.
>>
>>2993541
Seeing that the new thread will open with you deciding how to focus your first set of training exercises among other things, you'll be able to address things like that.
>>2993595
A better example is that Koda (the really shy guy who can talk to animals) has 4/5 Power, putting him on the same level as Tenya with his rocket-powered kicks.
>>
>>2993607
That's just Iida being a jobber tho, cause otherwise superspeed would make him stand up too much and considering he's not a main character that's not allowed.
