You are Finneas, the new Overlord of Undermountain. Well a new Overlord of Undermountain as there seems to be several of you around here, all living in a slightly anarchic society, with plenty of freelance monsters. The work to save this world is cut out for this overlord.
It has been a busy few days getting settled in the new domain under the freshly acquired minions. Learning more about this new society, it's history, oh and understanding the laws of magic in this new world. Texts and spells have alluded the existence of other worlds, but who would have thought they would be so familiar? So far it's been like visiting an exotic country. Most of the changes were in the people and customs, while the basis of the universe seemed to be the same. Aside from the laws of magic looking up to be almost completely different. Well, live and learn. Or whatever is one who is an animated skeleton does. Spending a little time learning Alchemy, helped. At least boiling, crushing, mixing, and cooking ingredients is the same as back then. It was also an interesting discovery that you can put the effects of spell into a weaker, liquid form. Provided you have the recepie.

However there are still a few issues. First off, you are not any wiser regarding the great danger you were sent to deal with. One can't make plans against the unknown. Second... well, you don't really feel in the shape to defeat some world-ending threat, know two spells in total with near-identical effects. Finally, whatever danger you face, having a strong power base would certainly help, and this base feels anything but powerful.

The walls look sturdy enough, and the front door is large iron gate, but everything else, well...
The minions' arm and armor are padded-together trash, their discipline is sub-par, and they don't look very threatening in general. During the trek into the city – or wilderness? Hard to tell in this environment – there were plenty of strong-looking creatures, so right out of old wives tales. The closest you've got are the Widefoot brothers, who might be two heads together, but shown no sign of being better than one. At least the butler is competent, seemingly happy with his new employment and the more roomy domain.

>A) Look to recruit stronger minions
>B) Find more magic
>C) Invest money into defense
>D) Try to get more riches by accepting quests

Assign several minions to patrol/scavenge duty and head out to tavern to drink some milk and hear the news. Maybe stop by the forge to see if the salamander girl has wares to offer. Be on lookout for potential recruits, especially some experienced fighter that could drill our minions could be nice, even if he’s too old or injured to fight by himself.

Maybe also ask butler what sort of overlords our neighbors are, so we can decide whether to befriend them or usurp them.

Well so much to do, so little time. At least it is healthier to assume that there is little time, and not be so than the other way around.
"Forrman" the crackling voice of the lich echoes across the halls
"Yes, master?" the short, wrinkly and bulldog-headed beastman makes his appearance upon being called
"I want you to send out patrols and scavenging parties. Collect anything interesting the find, and report anything dangerous before it could reach us."

Time to set out for a – day? Night? It is a bit difficult to tell underground – in the town. Finneas dons his robes, pauldron, and helmet, and makes his way through the ironclad gates at the front of his dominion. During the first sojourn into the bowels of Undermountain it became clear that there are certain focal points where the population seems to concentrate. At least there is always a crowd. While there are empty tunnels, and wilderness between them, with very strange and varied biomes. One could potentially try and delve into them, if they look for something specific. Maybe those scorpions can be used as mounts? Or perhaps the amphibians are willing to work.

Regardless, it is likely safer, to go to the market area, not to mention more versatile. One could go to the forge as well, maybe Grette already made herself busy. Then again, it is logical that she would try to sell it at the market.
The Bazaar is buzzing with all sort of creatures. A giant, floating head with multiple eyes on tentacles is reading announcements for 10 crystals, in a loud thundering voice. A tiny merchant is selling books from the top of an amber-colored hulking creature. A tentacle-headed man with purple skin is selling curious, scaled chicken.

Entering an establishment that looks like a tap house, Finneas is greeted with the sight of plenty a monsters sitting around tables, sipping their drinks, playing board games, or just cards. Walking to the far end, he sits atop one of the tall chairs. What really catches his eyes is the plaque near one of the walls. Filled with notices. These look exactly like the ones in the Portal Hall.
>A) Check out the quests
>B) Order something and listen to rumors
>C) Try to employ someone who could captain your minions
>D) Try to find an already working merc team

Order something and listen.
Also survey the other patrons. Maybe there’s someone who looks despondent enough to be available at economy rate.

Taking a seat on one of the tall chairs near the bar, the lich orders from the bartender. A burly humanoid with green skin, and a pot belly.
"I want some milk" he says, to which it takes a little while for the bartender
"Deepmilk, harpy milk or premium cow?"
"Premium cow" better not look like a cheepskate as a new face.
The bartender takes a metal container, and carefully pours out a tall glass.
"Premium container for premium guest" he pushes it through the counter "That will be 10"

The lich sat down at the corner of the bar with his milk, and started to heavily “mind his own business”. It brought him back to the time when he was a wee lad, doing the same work for pocket change. Of course he had to do it outside of barber shops, and behind couriers. “If only Informant Norrin would see me now” he thought to himself “listening on a bar-stool like one of them fancy moneybags.” The old man was always willing to give a few coins to any street urchin who gave him a few reliable tidbits of gossip. Only once he became the member of the Royal Court have Finneas learned that he was under the employ of the Spymaster.

While waiting, he the neighboring table got pretty loud. After a little while, a tentacle slapped someone, and a brawl broke out. From a sideroom, a minotaur, a gelatinous cube, and three lizardmen, and some bundle of vines came out. However instead of joining to the brawl, they have formed a premiter around the brawlers, not letting it spread. Once it was over, they dragged away the unconscious losers, and disposed of them on the street. How curious.
After quieting down, and starring to playing again, it didn’t take much time for Finneas to learn the game. It was like playing 25 at home, except with different numbers, and some cards subtracting instead of adding. And there was some relevance to the colors as well?

Between the comings and goings, there are few figures standing out. There is a pale, scarred humanoid in the process of trying to drink itself to the ground, but with a single keg. Sipping once in a while, and then looking at the world like it’s made of manure. Two tables to the left, there is a group, all paying attention to a large armed troll. They whisper about treasure and the need of someone who can see magical currents. Finally there is also the group of gamblers, where a tall cloaked gentleman seems to be the most constant player

>A) Try the pale drunk
>B) Ask the treasure hunters about their dilemma
>C) Try to play a few hands of Towers (the card game)
>D) Something else

The androgen-looking fellow is leaning onto the table, looking at the bottom of the same keg for the fifth time. On every occasion, his face gets more and more sour, like he someone pissed in his keg.
“How you doing?” the litch approached the scarred man.
“Shit.” he replies in a bit groggily, but not too drunk. He took another swig, then he continues “Let me tell you, life is a shithole!”
It is an invitation good as any, and Finneas decided it is the time to take a seat
“The life is like a snow globe. Have you seen one of those? Little glass baubles with some figurines in it. Pretty hard to pickpocket, let me tell ya.” After some confirmatory nodding he continues “It’s all pretty and proper, while all the places are in place within the bubble. Then poop, if something gets lose in the sphere, then it’s all crap! Because with every shake the loose piece knocks over other things, hits the glass, and before you know the whole thing is a mess."
“But can’t globes be fixed?”
“Fixed?”
“Yes, the globes I’ve seen have a wooden bottom. You see, if the bottom is taken off, you can replace the piece”
“B-but that means the glass can be broken, desstroying the globe!” he furrows his eyebrows in confusion.
“That’s a risk someone has to take to fix a globe” Finneas shrugged

After some contemplation, he talks again
“Ppffffffffffffft.” the whooshing sound is all that leaves his lips
“What is it?”
“Some things can’t be replaced”
“Such as?” the lich asked, feeling as if he is getting close to the heart of the matter. The reply was a loud bang on the table as a hooked hand landed on it’s surface.
“This! Look at it!” he raises it to his face “this is the nail in my coffin. A nail I have to take to the grave.”
“Maybe you could find a better replacement? I’m sure I have seen a couple of...”
“NO!” he slams the table “no, no, no!” giving an impact to each word “That is not the pOOOint!” then he slouches back into the seat.
“So what is?” comes the prodding question
“Nobody” he leans close “NOBODY. Needs a dopplegagner who can only imitate one handed people! Nobody! I can get a bundle of tentacles, or tiny marionettes, or whathaver have you! That just even reduces the people I can mimic further!”

“Maybe there is something else you’re good at?” the lich risked after a short silence.
“Sure, sure, but cutpurses are a dime a dozen. That’s a foreign currency by the way.” he tries to take another sip, but ends up shaking the cup upside down with disappointment. “Currency I don’t have.
hic burglars too, and forgeries are equally worthless as half this bunch doesn’t even know how to read.” he stands up wobbling only slightly “I suppose I can’t stay for more.”

As a consultant?
Shapechanging notwithstanding, I’m sure we can milk him for experience from his earlier adventures. And if he can fight, he can double as sparring partner to minions with potential enough to warrant the time.

“Well I might have a position open if you are interested”
“Huh? Did you listen to what I just said?”
“I have but still, you could be of good use. Maybe a break from fieldwork would do you good.”
“I am listening.”
“Well, I might have use of someone who is at home with skullduggery. Mostly advisory, though I might ask you to help out here and there. I also have a few servants in need of shaping up.”
“And in turn?”
“First a place to stay and what you can eat or drink. Then we’ll see how useful you can make yourself.”
After a little ponder, the dopplegagner stretches out his hand. At first the hooked one, but switches up upon realizing his mistake.
“Nilch Chreg, at your service. So tell you what you want to know, and kick someone here and there? You’ll have a deal”
“Fi- Overlord Finneas. Who knows? Maybe we’ll find something for your problem too.” the lich shakes the ivory limb.
>You’ve gained Nilch Chreg: Crippled Dopplegagner

After giving him the directions to the adobe, and the password to let him in, Nilch leaves to gather some of is belongings for relocation. This went well, but the day is still long. Or at least feels long, since the lack of daylight doesn’t seem to bother anybody down here.
There is some commotion outside. A crowd of people are standing circle around two figures. They chant “duel, duel, duel, duel” one one side there is a large wolf-man. Over two meters tall, with brown matted fur and long claws. On the other there is a tall humanoid with all four limbs, but covered with moss, bark, and vines all over. They slowly circle around each other.

>A) Make bets

Ask one of the bystanders what they are fighting over. Study both fighters’ style and technique.

If one of them seems respectable enough, ie either not having picked the fight or having picked it for a justifiable enough reason, then chat him up if he wins, or step in and try to get the victor to spare him in exchange for compensation if he’s about to die.

“So what happened?”
“Huh? The barkboy told the dog off! This is gonna be nasty!”
“Nah, Tha green fellow bought something dat tha hairy fellow wanted.”
“Yeah, but as I’ve heard that something used to be the wolf’s before it got pawd off.” adds an eyeless creature “heh, pawd.”
“And it’s just fine to attack someone for it?” asks the overlord
“Oh definitely not, now that you mention it, time to get some distance”
The others all nod in agreement, and start to give a wide wide berth to the two.

The duo circle each other, like two animals locked in some fight for dominance. The lycantrope dropping his weight down, hunched over, ready to pounce at any minute. The living tree taking on a wider stance, arms slowly rising from the side. However it wasn’t their behavior that really caught the eyes of Finneas. That was the invisible collection of mana around them. The wolf was using red, concentrating it beneath the skin, claws, tissue, solwly creeping up under the skin. The other creature doesn’t seem to do anything in particular at first, but then the warlock realizes something; it’s entire body seems to swim in green mana.
When the canine lurches forward, the dryad leans in with his arms ahead. The swirling mana beneath the “skin” thickens and makes the arms grow. After a few slashes from the elongated claws of the werewolf, the growth overpowers the damage, forming thick bark shields from the forearm.
The skirmish is fast, and after a few attacks the are back to circling.

Suddenly a robed figure enters the battlefield with a staff, flailing wildly. The words coming from his beak with great haste. “Stop! Stopit! Stop it you imbeciles!” he repeats before running out of breath. The two halt a bit due to surprise, and turn towards the avian.
“Oh yeah, and what are you gonna do about it?” snarls the wolf
“Do you gonna take offense for our matters?” the plantman says like the wind howling from a treebark
“No, but he might”
The two follow his finger (quill?) and look upon what perched onto one of the great pillars that dot the market. Not more than fifty meters above the trio, sat a several hundred pound of muscle, scales, and bad attitude.
“No fight in the market, or the Wyvern eats the restless.” he adds, and already backed out several meters by that time. “I’d keep walking in separate directions if I were you!”
The two give each other a look – at least the werewolf does, the treeant only moves his head-limb to the other – and wordlessly depart, the wywern watching them the whole time. Once everything seems to get back in order, the giant beasts takes of from the pillar, and disappears into a cave above.

>A) Go and assemble a team for a mission
>B) Try to find the avian man
>C) Try to follow one of the fighters (specify)

On one hand I’m interested what the tree man got that had the wolf man so agitated. But the bird man seems more intriguing. Seek him out and ask him why he intervened when he could have just let things develop, because that seemed remarkably selfless for this den of villainy.
