The quiet peace of an early morning sunrise at Foxhole is first interrupted when those Freelancers lounging outside, bantering, exercising, or consuming their breakfast of super-dense nutrient bars, notice a shadowy fog forming around the outside of the base. Soon the entire outpost is surrounded by impenetrable dark mist. An ominous silence is shattered by the blaring wail of alarm klaxons as the intercept monitor confirms enemy attack signals. The infused warriors scattered throughout the base hastily seal up their armor as they dash for the armory to ready themselves for battle.

"Scavs?" Graves asks the Priest on scanner duty. "Haven't we shot down enough of their dropships by now? You'd think they would get the message."

"No, sir," says the Priest. "We've got bug troubles. Worm signatures incoming, ground troops, three-hundred sixty degrees. Hell of a lot of them."

The section commander leans over to have a look at the crowd of moving symbols on the screen, bearing down on the outpost's location. "That is a hell of a lot. Too much for us to handle on our own, though I hate to admit it."

"Shall I call pest control, sir?"

"Guess you better," Graves says with a wry smirk. "I'll tell the Captain. You see if you can get a hold of one of the other companies nearby. The Murderhobos or the Mysterious Strangers."

"What about the Rainbow Unicorns, sir?"

Graves grimaces. "Don't call them unless you have to. That's an order."

The Priest activates the comm systems, using a spectrum-skip to avoid interception. "Murder Seven, Murder Seven, this is Foxhole outpost, do you read? Requesting immediate backup. We've got heavy assault incoming, could use a hand over here, over."

A laid-back female voice answers. "Ahhh, roger that, Foxhole, we've got a team available." The transmission crackles with encryption distortion. "We'll link up with the Strangers and Unicorns and head on over. Wait -- is that cranky son of a bitch Graves there? I bet he told you not to call the Unicorns, didn't he?"

"Don't do it, Spite," Graves says. "I'm warning you!"

Spite chuckles. "Now I gotta bring them along just to see your face."

"Just get your ass over here, will you?"

"We're on our way, Foxhole. Just hold out until we get there."

As usual, some rule and power changes as I keep working on the game, as well as new weapon and gear options from research.

General:
You may now respec powers from your class before each mission. You may respec your multiclass power, but it must be from the same class.
Level limit removed from Legacy.
Swift action rules clarified.
Knockdown requires full movement to stand. You may still Dash afterwards.
Knockback rules changed slightly.
Dash reworded so it counts as two movement actions, allowing you to move, swift action, then move again. Otherwise, you can't swift action in the middle of your movement.
Die Hard death option changed.

Weapons:
Axe has +1 crit damage.
Hammer reduced from 4 to 3 damage. Added Knockback 3.
Bonnie base crit chance increased by 1, Holding Aces bonus increased from 1 to 2.

Gear:
Throwing objects now have the Arc ability to clarify their targeting.
Smoke Grenade area increased from 1 to 2 (covers 5x5 area)
Battle Scanner now has Persist 1.

Knight:
Unstoppable now only works in straight lines, but requires only 2 spaces of charge-up.

Hunter:
Cyclone area increased from 1 to 2.
Alacrity nerfed to "You may now move after attacking."

Mage:
"+5 grenade range" bonus moved from Channeler to Arcanery.
Energy Drain now adds barrier instead of healing.
Spellvamp now heals 1 for each enemy hit, instead of adding 1 barrier total.

Priest:
Orbital Judgement burning replaced with piercing.

Solaaris stood up from its charging dock and recalibrated its microphone settings. The warning klaxons had made it quite obvious that there was a serious problem incoming.
It rushed to its cubicle in the armoury and was perplexed when it found a tall blue case resting against the back wall. As it inspected the case, its sensors located a message etched on the side.

Thoth tossed the Arcstrider from hand to hand, weighing it. "See, I can tell you how it works. It doesn't warp space like I do, it's more that it directly—AH TURN THAT OFF!" Thoth flailed to hit the deafen on his helm's digisenses, in the process letting go of the precious relic and flinging it over the edge of the roof onto the ground below.

This was swiftly followed by the realisation that he had just made A Mistake™. "You should go get..." Thoth paused, and the sirens kicked in. He ran with Smokes, finishing his sentence with "that" after the sirens had cut out.

Dozer is finished his final combat prayer, a tradition from a time long gone. Pulling on the battered armour, worm holes resealed with the Human's powerful magitech.

They had reinforced the hardpoints, and the armour was heavier. His seismic force projectors had been maintained but the added weight had changed him from a sapping mole, to a wrecking ball, a juggernaut.

He hesitated before picking an auto rifle from the armoury, the fast fire weapon much better for the expected Worms.

As he pulls the skull decaled helmet, he lets the moment sink in again, before moving out to greet Solaaris.

Of course, it's not like he needed to go to the armoury for ALL of his weapons. He carried Bonnie with him wherever he went, nowadays. Even hardwired his pocket to have it be the first thing in his hand when he woke up. Of course, nothing in such close, regular proximity to Thoth went unchanged. He'd tinkered with it, significantly more cautiously than ever before, and made it better than it ever was. Thoth liked to think Clinch would be pleased.

The disorientation as Einherjar Enhet-To woke up was crippling, jolting forth from his power station, ripping the charger cables away, thrashing around, trying to get his bearings. It almost immediately went away, with a mechanical precision. Looking down at his hands, Einherjar grimaced. That always felt disturbing, when the iron mind of his took over. Whatever, he didn't have time to focus on the crippling existential dread right now, there were bogeys approaching, and he had to fight.

And probably die again. He hoped that it wouldn't become a trend.

The armory is full of frantic activity as the Freelancers check over weapons and charge up grenades. Graves stands in the center of the chaos, half-suited, giving orders. With everyone's backs against the wall, he will fight himself, and damn any orders to the contrary.

Soon the combat troops are assembled outside the armory doors around their section commander, who hastily organizes them into squads. "Our priority is defending the laser battery!" Graves bellows. "Without it, enemy dropships will be all over us, and we'll have to abandon the outpost! Smokes, take Wolf squad up top the armory, guard that north wall and flank the gate! Thoth, I need Fox on the bunkhouse roof, take the south wall and the other side of the gate. Phaws, Hawk squad, workshop roof, northeast! Leopard, you and Tiger squad stay here in reserve with me!"

"Will it be time to hunt soon, commander?" inquires Leopard.

"By the satellites, Hunter, do you ever think about anything that isn't hunting?"

Leopard stares at the section commander blankly.

"All right, stupid question." Graves finishes sealing up his armor. Someone hands him his broken-horned helmet, and he clamps it down. HUDs flash red displaying the arrival of the first wave of assault forces, and Graves waves everyone forward. "Let's go, people, move it out! Take your positions, we've got worms to squash!"

He'd gotten his mind-world mixed with his body-world again.

Thoth's feet moved only semi-consciously, sending him up onto the roof and standing him up to get a look at what would be coming, nudging him to stand behind a little rise of some sort on the roof. He didn't bother looking at it, his gaze was fixed on Bonnie as he held her out in front of him. Bonnie glided back into its holster. Leather, like the movie cowboys had. The Freelancers dash towards their defensive assignments, with barely enough time to take to the walls before the assault hits. Some of the infused warriors are new recruits, or were occupied elsewhere when the team encountered worm attacks, and they have not yet encountered the necromantic bioswarm. Quickly the veterans regale them with horror stories from witnessing the parasites in action. Some play it off lightly, mocking the aliens as mere vermin, but others have not yet shaken off the sight of their comrades assimilated, mutated, and repurposed.

"Here they come!" someone shouts, as shapes emerge from the black fog surrounding the base. Low, hunched forms, bestial and savage, racing forward on powerful legs and bladed talons. These creatures are the fodder troops of the worm bioswarm, fast and deadly, larger and more fully grown than baseline parasites but just as voracious. They are called many things -- bugs, cutters, slicers, hungries -- but their most generally recognized term is "scourge", for the way huge packs of them are used to systematically strip the land of life and resources.

Flicker gets the first kill of the mission, firing his rifle at the incoming scourge pack and blasting the leader apart in a burst of chartreuse ichor. There are seven more behind it, however, and other packs converging from north and south. These swift and agile creatures with large claws no doubt have the ability to scale the fortifications, and the three deployed Freelancer squads hasten to defend the walls.

"Where to, sir?" asks one of the members of Tiger, the reserve.

"For the moment?" Graves says. "Right here." Even as the screeching howls of the scourge get closer, the commander stands unmoving, legs braced, arms folded.

"Shouldn't we help one of the other squads, sir?"

"Patience," Graves says. "The worms might seem like they're stupid, but they're not. At least, not the brains controlling them. They understand tactics like flanking and envelopment. And unlike us, they're used to working underground, so they understand fighting in three dimensions better than we do. So I fully expect that any second now --"

The ground shakes. Helmet HUDs light up with arrows pointing down.

"Right on schedule. Tiger team!" Graves bellows at his reserve squad. "Tunnel attacks incoming! Weapons ready! When the bastards poke their heads out, light 'em up!"

Those members of the company who first scrambled into position open fire on the incoming first wave of scourge. Most strike their targets. Though their weaponry is fearsome against unarmored humans, the expendable mass-wave biomorphs aren't especially durable. No match for the heavy ballistics of Freelancer guns, they go down in tangles of blood and bone. Dozer fires up the newly constructed flamethrower and sets the bridge alight, burning up those aliens caught in the blast. The remaining warriors prepare for further targets to enter range.

A handful of scourge slip past defenses and the barrage of overwatch gunfire. Smokes cuts the Arcstrider through the first to scale the wall. One successfully climbs the northeast wall, two more suicidally dash into through the flames on the bridge to attack Dozer before dying, and one slips through the overwatch fire to attack Purity. Dozer easily endures the scourges' assault, thick plated armor proving stronger from their fangs and blades, although one of his mirror images is dispelled in the process. Purity's energy barrier protects her, but is broken under the attack of bladed limbs and fangs.

Another wave of scourge descends on the base, this time concentrated from the north edge of the fog. "Wolf, Hawk, take care of those bastards!" Graves calls out. "Tigers, stay focused on this fucking hole, we don't know what else is going to come out of it. Oh, and deal with that fucking thing before it eats Purity, will you?"

Bonnie was in his hand now. More accurately, he was pinwheeling it on his finger by the trigger guard and strutting further along the roof. He'd tried tossing it from hand to hand and generally done fairly well at it, but it wouldn't do to accidentally throw a unique, one-of-a-kind weapon off a roof. That'd be terrible.

Thoth caught the handle with a quiet 'tick' of muffled metal on metal, setting his stance and leveling Bonnie for a good shot on whatever moved in from this direction. Hopefully something /big/. Bonnie didn't really get much chance to prove herself last time.

The onslaught of scourge continues, but the Freelancers are prepared and steadfast. Wolf, Fox and Hawk teams hold the walls, shooting, blasting, and stabbing at the oncoming waves of scourge, while Tiger stays poised and ready over the crumbling hole torn out of the ground, waiting for another assault group of worms to boil upwards.

The next wave of xenos to follow is composed of parasite infestors, the baseline form of worm biology, accompanied by the large but bizarrely agile weavers, spider-like builders and spellcasters. The scourge begin to scale the walls, using their sharp bladed talons. Most are blasted into oblivion before they can reach a target. However, a few make it through the defensive fire and get in range to attack their prey with slashing blades and snapping jaws, scoring the first wounds to Freelancer flesh of the battle on Smokes and Jandi, while Phaws loses her barrier.

A drop pod fired from the man cannon back at headquarters crashes to the ground in the middle of the battlefield. The rookie Knight Valdus emerges, equipped with machine gun and hammer, ready to join the fray.

Another set of pings lights up, indicating the next assault locations, as well as another spawning tunnel about to emerge. "Keep it up, everyone!" shouts Graves over the din of ballistic weaponry and alien screams. "Rahab, Scorch, get on that new hole! New guy, Valdus, on me! Everybody stick together, watch each others' backs!"

The Freelancers remain in high spirits as the base defense is initially successful. Worms are gunned down in sprays of bright green ichor. The bridge is solidly defended, the walls have held -- mostly. The first waves of worm assault troops are breaking. But there is time yet to go until reinforcements from their fellows arrive, and the attacks are slowly growing in size and intensity. A new threat is revealing itself, tunneling up from the hard stone below.

From the tunnels and from the depths of the cliff underneath the bridge there swarms a new enemy, larger and more heavily armored than their fodder counterparts the scourge. Roaches or shellheads are called so for their durability and unrelenting persistence, seemingly impossible to exterminate with conventional weaponry, requiring either concentrated burst fire or armor-breakers to take action. They are sometimes called spikers or spinebacks for their ability to fire the regrowing spikes on their backs and limbs as lethal mid-range missiles, and can also close the distance to use their digging claws as brutal melee weapons. The creatures appear to be craftier than their more expendable brethren, actively taking cover to facilitate their role as hardy midrange fighters.

The bloody onslaught continues, and the Freelancer continue their stubborn resistance. Scourge and parasites are mowed down with ballistic fire or cut down with alloyed blades, dying in splattering bursts of chartreuse ichor, or incinerated by flame grenades, burned to a charred heap of ash. But the alien waves seem to be numberless, endless, filled with insatiable hunger, and some of the warriors start to feel fear, unsure if they truly can hold the line long enough for their reinforcing comrades to arrive.

Yet another new bioform makes its appearance, slithering out of the dark mist and onto the battlefield, propelling itself with a muscular, undulating tail. These heavily armored creatures have an incredibly dense skull carapace which acts as their primary weapon, giving them the moniker "Skull bashers" or just Bashers. They are known to be used as siege weapons, charging headfirst through the toughest of front lines or fortifications and blasting them to splinters.

Those roaches which were wounded but not killed outright begin to regenerate wounds, hyper-metabolism knitting together flesh and carapace at rapid speed. "Focus your targets, goddamn it!" Graves shouts. "Make sure they're dead! What's our blip status?"

"Son of a bitch," Graves growls. "Looks like the kids brought along a grown-up." With a fiery explosion he blast punches the roach in front of him, sending it careening away onto its back and into the flames. He then rapidly checks the section's biometric readings and the radar patterns of the oncoming enemies. Northwest corner is under heavy siege. "Tiger team! Head west to the armory, reinforce Wolf squad, hold that wall!"

"What about you, sir?" asks Purity beside him.

"Don't worry about me, rook," Graves says, readying his fists for the oncoming wave of scourge. "I'll be fine. You just focus on helping Wolf squad. Now go!"

Solaaris strafed around the Scourge was targeting it. There were more important problems to attend to.
The Northern side of the base was under heavy attack from the worms and new life forms this team of Freelancers had never encountered before were rapidly approaching.

Solaaris got into position. It placed both its hands on the hilt of the greatsword and thrust the weapon down into the ground as it attempted to tap into the Satellites' ethereal powers to help its squad.

The next thing Thoth knew, Solaaris's shiny new napkin got sent up in a blinding flare of energy to counter the impact of a Weaver's... claw... thing. It rerouted his cravat to the task, too. How rude!

Still, there was a new guest to welcome. After action analysis recorded a fit of extravagant cursing cycling through a dozen ancient languages and one constructed cypher, Thoth would quietly deny it, blaming the recording on meddling from his "Arch-Nemesis Warlord Forty-Four".

What they both agreed on was that he then triggered his spacefold bolt in an internal configuration, sending him hurtling over towards the edge of the building. He jauntily waves at Solaaris. "Come on, we've got a VIP to greet!" he called as he leapt off the small rise and over the side of the building in the same moment.

Bonnie sped to his hand as he leveled it at the great... /thing/ in front of him. Something about the situation clicked him back to reality as he lined up the sights. This was no partygoer, and this was no party. It was a near-hopeless fight for survival. Any other designation would be obscenely spurious.

The devouring worm Noxalas lurches forward around the machinery Thoth hides behind, and lashes the mage with its tentacles for heavy damage. A protusion on its back extrudes and fires an organic blob that explodes in a burst of hundreds of razor-sharp needles, many of which end up lodged in Scorch and Purity. Finally, the agitated monster undulates forward at terrifying speed, slamming into Jandi and Hiram and knocking them both to the ground.

The bloodthirsty creatures close in, slashing, harrying. Wounds accumulate. Gryphon and Valdus are knocked off their feet and sent flying into or through terrain by charges from the aggressive bashers.

The all-too-brief respite from enemy assault waves ends abruptly as red alert indicators flare in every direction.

Scorch screamed and swore in Dozer's language again, as the small spikes tore holes in him,his shield eating up about half of them. This time,it was about shoving each and every spike up the worm's anus. He looked around at the devastation surrounding him,and saw Valdus facing a difficult situation. Oh. Oh that wasn't good. It appeared he'd angered Noxalas the Flatulence or whatever the fancy name his HUD had given it was. Why was the targeting system so melodramatic sometimes?

...Why was that his thought process with several barbed tentacles slamming into him with rib-crushing force?

At about that point his mind cut out into an entirely hallucinatory scene, which he experienced at hundreds of times the speed of real time, sort of like how dreams only really took a fraction of a second each. He dragged himself out of that around when he guesstimated the tentacles would let him go. He'd tried to not get into any... distracting hijinks in the induced delusion, and for once his subconscious cooperated.

He scrambled along the ground, blocking out the majority of the pain with a combo of the Infusion's inhuman enhancements and a few Mage mental discipline techniques he'd picked up. Even through that he was winded, his chest burned, and he could feel something stabbing him.

The chitinous, slithering shape of a Basher loomed in the reflection of an oddly polished section of the crates he was heading for. Thoth raised his gun to point at it, his eyelights narrowing as he stared at the reflection. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he could still crunch numbers. His gun arm loosened a bit and he altered the horizontal arc of his gun arm just a nudge and pulled the trigger.

Oh, of course, it was a mirror. In all the number-crunching he'd forgotten that it didn't flip images, just reflect them. A little difference that threw off his split-second equations. Ah well, he'd have to practise that at a later date. It'd probably have looked damn cool if it hit.

The giant worm was unaffected by the gout of flame that he had washed over it. As it charged into the armoury, treating apart the building, Dozer grimaced, as Fox we're slowly burnt, slashed or tabbed by the worm's entourage.

The loud snap of the trap on the nearby building drew Dozer closer, charging through the flames and climbing atop the nearby fortification. Solaaris was surrounded.

Solaaris was mesmerised by the giant beast. It hadn't seen a worm so grotesque since the one that Rhino had stayed back to fight off.
It suddenly snapped out of the looping sequence of awe and returned to analyse the fierce battle that going on around it.

Thoth and Flicker had both been hurt by a series of attacks.
In its peripheral vision, it saw Thoth dragging himself to cover, hiding from the great worm that had lashed him with its enormous tendrils.

The Freelancer company have expended most of their resources, but continue to fight on, fueled by desperation and ballistic weaponry. Graves and Gryphon smash the ground, sending seismic shocks underneath the battlefield. A few mages still have grenades, a few priests still have medkits. The warriors still have their weapons. As long as they have tools in their hands and strength in their limbs, they all will continue to fight on.

Holding the walls at this point is completely untenable. Vast waves of worms are approaching from all directions, revealing the initial waves of defeated foes to be nothing more than a light vanguard. All the Freelancers can do is fall back, protect the laser battery, and try to survive. Graves stands fast at the entrance to the laser battery's control room, pushing back against two Bashers, one with each hand. "Keep on fighting!" he shouts over comms between gritted teeth. "Keep -- on -- rrrgh--" His boots crack the concrete below under the pressure.

Really? The basher came for him? Fuck that basher. What an asshole. Now his ribs were broken again, right after Satellite had been kind enough to knit them together.

Thoth scrabbled back to his feet, fingers still deathly tight around Bonnie. Alas, the worms had other ideas. His HUD lit up with enemy blips from all sides. Plus Crane* registered as outside the walls... for some reason. Well, that needed to be fixed. That one had /fascinating/ armour. A 'surge bolt', as he'd come to call them, arced across his fingers. "Crane! Ride the Lightning!" But before he sent it, there was one last thing to do.

Twisting spacetime to take an object from the past or the future was... difficult. Attaching the effect to happen on the point of a bolt of charged energy modulated to break space in half was more so. But, well, that never stopped Thoth. He tossed the lightning up into an arc, and at the apex of that arc a small, cylindrical shape of metal with an orange glow at the seams catapulted from it to go further. It landed in the middle of a cluster of scourge and ignited the majority of the cluster. Just another lil' present from Thoth.

Ah. He'd forgotten the basher. Oh well. He'd probably live.

Thoth's energy bolt hit him as he stood dazed, his sense of direction off for some reason. As he pulls the spines from his chest, and reaches the for the third, only to find nothing.

"Thoth's given you time, make use of it." As the ghostly voice that he's had for a while echoes in his head, he notices the minute flickering of space time folding around him.

As he ran, time moved slower, or was he moving faster... Dozer didn't care, as he rushed through the gate and up the stairs. When he spoke, his voice shifting between a heavier brutish tongue, and his normal trained accent.

"Everyone fall back. The cavalry is almost here. Protect the main turret and survive."

Solaaris jumped off the roof of the Bunkhouse and got into position. There were going to be a few sighs of relief from some of the other Freelancers but Flicker was just out of range and in a dangerous situation.
Solaaris sent a couple of packets to the Satellites asking them to watch over its friends while he deployed the Regen Kit and shot the Basher that launched Thoth.
