You are Subaru Kurokawa, son of Vice-Admiral Kagetora Kurokawa of the Zipang Combined Fleet, and the battle chief of the super battleship Yamato. With your country under the subjugation of an ascendent Tengar Khaganate, the remnants of Zipang’s military establishment, along with powerful allies from the East Europan Imperial Alliance, came up with a daring plan to restore your country’s independence: Operation Ten-Go.

Despite some rough run-ins with the Khaganate’s Beiyang Fleet, your crew was successful at hijacking the Valkyrur-powered Yamato, seizing not only the battleship, but also several fighter prototypes, and unexpectedly, a princess in tow. Now, after a short skirmish with the Nanyang Fleet in your trek south, Yamato has finally reached her first destination: Formosa.

It was also here where you were given your first shore leave. Then, singling you out during dinner, the acting Captain of the Yamato, Nagamasa Suwabe, revealed a great secret about Zipang’s national treasure and his intention to use said treasure to rebuild a new ‘Zipang’ somewhere else. At the same time, he also issued a grave warning about foreign actors who had their eyes primed for said treasure.

More worrying about this reveal was that even your allies from the Empire, was also implicated in this scheme.

With all the ingredients in place, the three of us left the fish market and went across the street into another complex. We quickly took a left and entered the shop directly ahead- a small, shabby looking restaurant with an open kitchen in the storefront and a few round wooden tables on the inside.

This was one of the many restaurants that occupied the other half of the bazaar. There were many similar establishments around the fish market, which mainly serve to help prepare and cook the raw materials bought from said market. With so many restaurants serving similar purposes within close proximity, the competition here is fierce, and thus only the very best could thrive.
Despite the place appearing way less aesthetically pleasing than the teahouse yesterday or the inn, this place by no doubt serves some of the best seafood dishes in Formosa.

“I want the namako boiled and served cold, with vinegar and ginger. For the crabs, I want half of them steamed, and the other half done as you see fit. ”
I told the cook at the front counter, handing over my bag of namako and crab totem. The head chef took the items and gave me a confident nod, eager to work his magic and prepare the dishes. With the raw materials handed over, I entered the store with my sister and our guest.

“Everything’s ordered, and now we wait.” I announced to the two girls as we took our seat.
“Ah, very nice.” My sister responded with her hands clasped together. “Looking forward to lunch, Saya?”
On the other hand, Amile still looked exceedingly uncomfortable, her shoulders tucked and both hands clinging tightly on her seat. I’d imagine eating in a ‘cheap’ looking place like this is a first for someone like her.

Around 10 minutes of waiting later, the first course arrived.
A bamboo mushiki filled entirely with freshly steamed crabs, with thin slices of ginger in vinegar served on the side.

“Itadakimasu.”
Usually, this will be followed by the raising of chopsticks. But since we’re eating steamed crabs, Tewi and I promptly grabbed our first round with bare hands.
Amile, who most likely has never dined like this before, watched the two of us in some sort of uneasy curiosity. She observed as we dismembered our crustacean from limb to limb, then broke open the body to dig out the thick, sticky layer of orange eggs within.

Her glance drifted back to the rest of crab sitting on the big mushiki, hesitant to make a move.
“First time eating crab?” My sister stopped to ask the princess, who was startled for a second before giving off a weak response.
“I… I guess.”

Her confusion is more than understandable. Even though I have no experience or knowledge of the sort of aristocratic lifestyle royal families tend to lead, it was not hard to imagine that everything served to Amile were clean and prepared. That being the case, it would be interesting to watch her do the work by herself this time. Not to mention, peeling the crab is part of what made eating it enjoyable.

“It’s not actually as hard as you might imagine,” I told her, cleaning out one part of the leg. “Try breaking the leg off from the torso by the joint first.”

“I-I’ll try.” She toughens up for just that moment as her eyes fixated on the crabs. Surprisingly, this was actually the first time the princess hasn’t reacted to my words with either hostility or anxiety. It might very well be due to curiosity over what’s at hand triumphing over our circumstances.
Her hand reached out to grab one of the crabs, taking the steamed, red crustacean delicately by the tip of its hind legs. Hovering it over her own plate, she dropped the food almost immediately, shaking her hand in an attempt to cool herself from the residual heat.

“Are you okay?” Tewi was quick to rush to her aid, wrapping Amile’s burned finger with a piece of tissue.
“I'm fine.” The determined princess gave a quick reply, and resumed to peel away… no, forcibly dismember would be a better description here.

In a rather unexpected display of persistence, Amile tackled the hard-shelled food like a ravenous predator. After breaking open the dorsal plate, she took no time to tear the rest of the crab apart with her bare hands.
The pre-cracked bits of shell on the limbs and pincers were torn off, then snapped open the joints apart with brute force, disregarding the spikes that occasionally slashed her delicate palms. When it came to parts that were inconvenient for hands to crack, the Tengar princess opted to crush the crustacean’s shell with her teeth. Eventually, she disregarded the ‘peeling’ part altogether, preferring to just break the crab into bite-sized bits and chew each part into mush before covering her mouth to spit out whatever was left out.

All in all, this was not the way Tewi and I had expected her to ‘learn’ doing the task.
“I think she has a grudge against that thing.” My sister whispered, to which I could only respond with an agreeing nod.

“Are you okay?” This time it was my turn to ask her the same question, and this time, Amile had the eyes of a steppe wolf that has just brutally dismembered and eaten a calf alive.
As usual, she did not spare any words for me, only an indifferent nod before proceeding to brutally dismember another crab in within reach.

Then, as if perfectly timed, our second course arrived - Cold Namako

“Shinjou-san,” I tried to gain the princess’ attention with her pseudonym, before slipping her the plate of cold, chopped up cucumbers rinsed in vinegar. “Would you like to give these a try?”

The dish’s chilled nature and the smell it irradiated through the shower of vinegar made it the one peculiar course out of all the foods that are to be served in this meal. “It’s got all kinds of benefits.”

Or so said the practitioners of oriental medicine. Even if crab wasn’t a common food on Amile’s dish, sea cucumbers probably were, especially considering how popular it is as a treasured delicacy in the Yu-mainland. In fact, I vividly remember having sea cucumbers during my visit to Admiral Sima’s residence- except that variant was slow braised in thick silkie broth, a cooking method that has enough steps to fill a whole booklet.

Examining the dish of thinly cut pieces carefully, Amile reached for her chopsticks and gradually picked one up and sent it into her mouth. Her mouth moved rhythmically as she grinded out the chewy and slightly rubbery texture of the invertebrate, savoring its flavor. While I did want to ask how she thought about the cold namako, I figured out she still probably won’t bother speaking to me.

Maybe Tewi could ask her…
I nudged my sister on the elbow while she was busy chewing on the claws of a crab, and whispered my request to my sister.
“Well, why don’t you ask her yourself?”
“Me?” I pointed innocently to myself, then turned to the preoccupied princess nervously. She was surprisingly undeterred from our chattering, instead preoccupied with experiencing the jelly-like seafood in vague curiosity.
“It’s not like she’s going to bite your arm off.” My sister teased, in fact, I’m pretty certain that what she really wanted was to see me fail and embarrass myself like her personal court jester.

Well... It can't be that bad.

“So, how’s the namako?” I asked, fully expecting Amile to treat me with dead silence and neglect.
“It… it chews like donkey skin...”

Did I hear that correctly? My line of sight drifted back onto Amile, finding our eye crossing for a split second before she turned away hurriedly to face Tewi.
“Except fishy and without the beastly aftertaste, I suppose?” Tewi finished the sentence for her, to which Amile nodded in agreement.
This may well be the first time the two of us actually managed to have a non-hostile exchange.
“Please, have some more if you’d like to.” I followed with my reply sounding as polite as I can.

Though Amile did not continue the dialogue any further, she did pick up her chopsticks to take a bite off small pieces of cold namako sporadically while Tewi and I finished off the steamed crabs one by one.
The pattern continued until our next course arrived- a large platter of stir-fried crab and eggs.
The crabs were chopped into small, bit sized pieces, stir-fried with beaten eggs then seasoned generously with onions sauce, garlic, spring onion, chili peppers, and the house special sacha sauce.
Needless to say, this dish is a heavy hitter in terms of flavor, and it’s one of the house signature ways of preparing seafood that brings patrons back again and again.
Now that we’re moving onto heavier dishes, it was a good chance to treat the two with something more neutralizing- and the large kettle of complementary herbal tea on the side could serve just the role. Hopefully, this can also create an attempt for me to interact with the Tengar princess some more.

“Oh, aren’t you quite a gentleman today, Nii-san?” My sister was slightly bemused by the fact that I actually took the burden to serve her tea.
“And is that all that you’re gonna say?” I bantered back while filling up Amile’s cup. Unlike my sister, the princess would reply with a soft “Thank you”, before taking a sip of the hot beverage.

“At least our guest knows proper manners, unlike a certain someone.” I shrugged, throwing a glance at my sister.
“Excuse me?” Tewi raised me an incriminating eyebrow, fully aware that my comment was directed squarely at her.
“What? I wasn’t talking about you.” I replied in monotone, deliberately fudging away my intent in the most obvious way possible. In return, my sister rolled her eyes and simply turned away, choosing to give me the cold shoulder instead of engaging in further escalation of a spitfight.

I guess she wasn’t in the mood of having our little sibling quarrel in public, considering the presence of and the image she wanted to maintain on front of our guest. This was a diplomatic mission after all, not just any run off the mill family lunch.

Having witnessed our little bickering, Amile got herself closer to my sister, again whispering something in her ear.
“Most of the time we do.” She answered, stuffing one half of a stir-fried crab in her mouth and shot me a cold glare. “Then there are times where he acts all petty like this.”
I returned to my seat and poured myself my own share of chrysanthemum pu’er tea.
“Sure, I’m guilty for wishing the best for my dearest sister.” This sort of exchange between us happens once in a while, and honestly it’s just what we do for shits and giggles. But more importantly, this little exchange seemed to have opened up Amile for chatting again, which means Tewi can continue to work her magic.

“How’s your family like? Does Saya-chan have siblings?” As quick-witted as she always was, my sister found a perfect opening to explore some of the Khagante’s topmost ringleaders.
“I-” Amile nodded, but her words were promptly choked in her mouth. “I do… have a few.”

“Is there someone that you remember particularly fondly of?” I asked, starting off with a topic that was the least directly interrogative. The Khagan has had quite a lot of children, as most autocratic royal families go, and I suppose having insight from an insider will be more accurate than whatever the tabloid portrayed them as.

“I- I have an older sister, sister Chabi.” She spoke softly after pondering.
I guess we really couldn’t expect Amile to be close to someone like say… the crown prince. Moreover, the female members of the Khan’s family had more often than not been overshadowed by the Khan and his prominent sons. I wonder what she could reveal about the lesser known members of her family.

“I see, I see.” Tewi nodded, slowly digesting this new flow of information. “How was she like?”
“While she was from another womb, she but treated me as her own blood.” Amile reflected, the faint smile she wore an evident proof of how kindly she remembered of her sister.
“Mother was too often busy with politics, leaving us alone with the servants on most days. Everyone in the family were preoccupied with their duty as well, but sister Chabi always made time to visit us, and was there whenever she is needed most.”

It’s actually quite an accomplishment for her family to not harbor much rumors about infighting between heirs. When it came to the Empire, infighting among princes of different factions and ethnicities used to be frequent and a well known public secret. Then there was always the infamous infighting among the royalty of the former Yu Dynasty, which ultimately doomed the nation.
Also, did she just say ‘us’?

Amile paused for a moment, staring into the reflection in her cup.
“In the end, sister Chabi was more like a parent than a sister.” The Tengar princess ended it with a wry smile. “Even though our mothers were... never in the best of terms”

“Sounds like a better relationship than us two. How’s she doing now?” I quipped, taking the information to heart, only for Amile to turn and face me dead in the eye.
“Sister Chabi is not around anymore…”
“I...I’m sorry.” I stammered, cowering back in my seat. That revelation came out quite unexpected, and I never imagined that I would step onto a landmine this quickly.

“Ah! That’s not what I meant. She’s… in Europa as a diplomat. ” Amile held her arms up to quickly correct the misunderstanding. “In the Federation...”
I could only react with a sigh of relief, knowing that I haven’t accidently stepped onto a deliberately touchy subject. Members of her family were either very scattered or isolated, as expected from a royal family of an autocratic empire.
On the other hand, Tewi listened with eyes wide sparkling with interest.

A diplomat in the Federation, now that was an indicator if there was any.

“You seem to treasure those days.” I commented, noting the genuine fondness Amile exerted as she shared that part of her life.

Amile nodded at my statement, a nostalgic smile gradually formed on her innocent, delicate face. The soft afternoon sunshine that glittered through the windows accentuated these features with an added layer of shade. With a correct angle, I’m sure she could fit right in as the model of some famous portrait.

At the same time, I remembered the first time I met the princess back in Kure with Margaret. The way the princess melancholically staring into the horizon on a cold winter day, alone and desolate, was not a sign of a fulfilling life. In a way, I sympathized with her when it came to her marriage, as knowing the way her family works, she had no choice in this arrangement.
More particularly noteworthy was her designated spouse, Sima Guang- the firstborn son of the last crown prince of the Yu Empire.

While he did play his part in helping us out of Kure, I held my own reservations against him, particularly with how the younger Sima conducted himself. There was something about him that just…. pinged me off the wrong way, and was the same sort of disposition I held towards Margaret’s brother.

“More than your marriage?” I added, intending to delve slightly deeper into her personal life. And while the princes of the Khaganate were an important subject for discussion, information about the Simas are more important for the time being.
Suddenly, the uplifting, nostalgic mood in the room instantly evaporated, replaced by one grim and gloom. Her lifted spirit instantly sank at the mention of her married life, that promising smile slowly morphed into a wavy frown, and teardrops formed at the sides of her eyes like rows of gathering dew.

And it was at that very moment I realized I’ve stepped onto a real landmine this time.
Alerted by this spontaneous turn of events just as I did, Tewi rushed hurriedly to her friend’s side, caressing Amile on the shoulder. That, however, did absolutely nothing to help to right things back to order, and the Khagan’s daughter broke down in a pool of cascading tears.

“Get out.”
I watched in confusion as my sister glared and seethed through her teeth like an enraged animal. This wasn’t the usual Tewi who would throw out casual jabs at me occasionally. She was undoubted, unabashedly serious this time around.

Okay, I understood things might have really gone south this time, but did I really have to be out of the scene in this circumstance?

“I’m not saying this a second time!”
Her escalating fit of anger was accompanied with a steaming metal spoon aimed straight at the center of my forehead. Said peculiar choice of a projectile missed its mark but nevertheless made a loud ping as it smashed into the limestone floor.

“Okay, fine! I get it!”
Hurriedly, I took a rather unceremonious flight out of our room, then out of the restaurant, barely giving myself enough time to catch a breath.
>>
>>3153645

Screwed up again, huh?
I pinched the neck of my nose and shook my head, the cool, salty breeze of the ocean swiping against my hair. The problem was not the relationship between Amile and her fiance, but the fact that I might just have sabotaged most of the rapport my sister worked so hard to build up with the princess.

Reflexively, I kicked up some loose pebbles from the uneven road, frustrated not only at the turn of events, but also at stupidly insensitive I can be. Putting into account how much effort Tewi must’ve put into this little meeting, she has all the right to be this angry.

However, this was sadly not the worst thing that could happen today.
There was a sound like that of a shrieking banshee, piercing enough to make ears ring and thunderous enough to shake the whole of Amekou. A lingering moment of silence followed as residents of the city took the time to collect what had happened, then like panicking cattle, stampeded for shelters over the grim bells of the Sirens.

From this moment onwards the Khaganate’s thirst for conquest had finally hit the shores of Formosa, and the first strike was to come in the form of an air raid.

“Tewi! Amile!”

In the panic of the moment, I found myself calling out loud to my sister and the princess with her real name as I struggle to move through the torrent of people pouring out the complex- not just from the restaurant, but the large crowd dispersing like a stampede to clear out the entire bazaar.
I screamed their names repeatedly, unsure if my voice was enough to carry itself through this tsunami of chaos.

“Nii-san!”
Like a drowning sailor reaching for the hoop, my sister gripped tightly onto my wrist, doing her best to not to get carried away by the stampede. The princess has both her hands clinging firmly around my sister’s other free arm with all her might. Like a newborn doe, her body went stiff, eyes squinted tightly shut in a desperate attempt to shield herself away from the unruly storm of panic-stricken atmosphere outside.

I summoned every last inch of strength and yanked the two out of the maelstrom, straying away from the crowd and onto the road as we watched everyone scramble inland towards the bomb shelters on the city’s hillsides built for this very purpose.

“Where are you going!?” Tewi demanded, tugging the flaps of my shirt. “There are no shelters in that direction!”
“We are not going there!” I dragged the two girls along, rushing towards the outer rim of the city as recollections of the battles fought back on Zipang’s mainland resurfaced in my mind.

It wasn’t that the bomb bunkers in Zipang were useless- it was how inadequate they were at fitting every single person seeking refuge. As the bunkers were originally intended to only shield military personnel and prominent government figures in times of emergency, their numbers and sizes were seriously lacking compared to the population of a metropolis. By the time the invaders were marching onto Osaka, citizens were digging up their own shelters instead, relying on self-dug dirt shelters over the state built bunkers to save their skins.

But in the end, neither the civilian made bunkers nor the highly protected bunkers of the establishment were able to withstand the relentless shore bombardment from the Beiyang Fleet. The Capital was more or less in ruins far by the time the Khaganate’s main army set their boots and wheels within it.
Having survived those similar air raids before made me realize one important factor when it came to surviving bombings - staying as far as possible away from potential targets.

Tewi took a firm look at the landscape before her, then angrily pressed a foot into the moist, mossy ground.
“This!? We’re hiding in this? Are you out of your mind?”
“Shut it, just do as your brother says!” My voice came out surprisingly loud and authoritative, despite layered over by the sounds of planes flying right past our heads. Even Tewi herself was taken aback by my sudden change in attitude. Not to waste a second, I shuffled both girls into some old, dilapidated ruins of an old fort along the shoreline, a relic from Europa’s Age of Exploration.

When Khaganate bombers flew over the skies of Osaka, and when battleships bombarded our shores, their prioritized targets were always defensive installments, military buildings, factories and supply lines, with the occasion raids targeting civilian populations for the purpose of demoralization. Regardless of intention, all these strikes were meant to achieve a goal - destroy a specific target.

Some ruined rubble away from the city, let alone rubble that was left to erode away for centuries, was nowhere on the list for high priority targets - and hence was least likely to be struck. Evading danger was one of the many ways I survived back in Osaka.

“Nii-san,” Tewi sat together with the anxious Amile to a corner. “If we get hit here, we’re done.”
I took a glance at the petrified princess, shivering uncontrollably as she squirmed back into a ball and buried her head between her knees, covering both her ears to block out the drumbeats of modern warfare outside the precariously fragile structure. “This is the one place the bombers won’t target.”
“And why are you so sure?”
“Because there is nothing of value here,” I reassured my sister over the backdrop of more engines joining the congregation hundreds of meters above.

If there was any indication that Amile has never been through the harsh landscape of war, this was pretty much it. Her state right now was no different from a frightened newborn doe, curled up, lying still on the ground in hopes that a predator would walk past without noticing. It came with quite a contrast to her two elder brothers, who either enjoyed the destruction or was stoically uncaring of such. For a child of the bloodthirsty Khagan, the girl was surprisingly timid.

Compared to her, my first experience on the frontlines was far… smoother, in a sense. I quickly adapted to the noise and destruction around myself back then out of the necessity to survive. This was pretty much the same for Tewi, even though she did not fight the war back then, she had experienced her share of air raids enough to respond to them in a more composed manner.

Amile on the other hand, at most, had only witnessed the aftermath of conflict - debris left once the dust of war has settled.
“Don’t worry, you’ll be safe here. This place is far from a priority target” I comforted the terrified princess as a thunderous explosion roared from a distance, accompanied by audible clicks of sizable debris showering over the surfaces of buildings and roads. That one was at least a few kilometers away.
Similar drummings of destruction echoed out from distances afar, lighting up Amekou in orange and black. Quietly, we listened as the throb of hundreds of heavy bombers began to fill the air, getting nearer and louder by the second, then decreasing in tone as they flew past us and headed straight for the city.

Now, knowing what this entailed, I immediately took out my pager, then to both Yanagi and Satoru, I entered two simple words:
[Where]

[Hole][City][Center] was the first to show up, followed almost immediately by another set of [Good][Valky][Side].
It was impossible to tell which message was from Satoru and which was Yanagi, but it was good to know Margaret accompanied one, and the other was in a bunker somewhere.

The bombs from the skies continued to incinerate the ground, destroying everything with a blazing fist. Along with the bombs came the heavy blockbusters, so big it could be seen from the sky. Then, as sudden and unexpected the raid first appeared... it stopped.

“Is it over?” Amile stuttered, slightly lifting up her head from cover to break the awkward silence. The whole bombing run lasted for approximately 10 minutes, though at times like these, each minute felt like a whole hour

“They’re gone,” I answered, stepping into the clear. My sister followed closely behind, using her body to support a near-limp Amile. True to my prediction, none of the strikes were concentrated around this area. In fact, even the seafood bazaar remained untouched, and so was the port.

Amekou’s center, on the other hand, was a completely different story. As the three of us stood and looked to a distance, we were treated with the landscape of smoke and fumes rising from the burning shells of buildings, now swept away by a gradually rising wind. Those ever so distinct orange flames continued to burn from a distance, accompanied by the jumbled, mixed screams for help from Amekou’s residents.

“Nii-san…”
“I know.”

I'll be starting the next thread with the votes made by the rest of the current thread's lifetime. As always, thanks for participating in this session.

Now I'm not quite sure when the next thread will be up, but I'll announce it on Twatter once it's ready.
