/qst/ - Quests

The humming of the guidance computers fills the room, mostly dark and covered in electronic panels. As you enter your ”glove” drops and your soft fleshy tendrils guide themselves into the access socket for the terminal placed in the middle of the wall. The familiar rush of electricity flows through your tentacles as the monitor above flashes to life filling the room with a faint blue glow.
[Monitor]”Access Granted, Welcome back Karnvel 9”
The request surges through your flesh and the terminal hums. Lights flash all around briefly before the monitor blinks with a new message.
[Monitor]”5 Warps before destination arrived.”
The frustrated sigh coming from your mouth is barely audible from the blanket of noise consuming the room. At least a day’s worth of travel lays ahead of you, the thought fills you with dread. That outer rim system is the only reason you have to take this long trip. You may be getting a good deal of coin for compensation, but that doesn’t take away the time wasted on a seemingly useless errand. “Go see station Phi-3260, we haven’t heard from them in weeks, something may have happened.” Those words echo in your mind, knowing full well they didn’t accidentally break their communication equipment. They’re likely all dead from some horrid creature or suffocated in the void after someone succumbed to log cabin fever or some other madness.
The feelers pull out of the terminal and the light of the screen leaves with them. Picking up the mechanical ”glove” you dropped at the floor behind you, your flesh worms it’s way into the ”glove” and you test it. Thumb, check. Index, check. Middle, check. Little, check. They all work as they should, the middle still squeaking when moved and the little one difficult as ever. The sensor padding on the bottoms of each finger activates simulating the feeling of touch, the backs of your “gloves” as cold as ever.
The door to the Control Station closes quietly behind you, locking away the noise from the rest of the ship. Now in the main hall, you can see all the panels and handles cover the brighter lit walls and “ceiling.” The only meaningful markings being those red fading signs.
RIGHT WING: LIFE SUPPORT, RIGHT ENGINE AND ACCESS PORT
LEFT WING: STORAGE, LEFT ENGINE AND ACCESS PORT
The flooring is mostly paneling dirtied and scuffed from use, a ladder and hole directly to the other side of the hall from the door. It leads right to the spinning living quarters with its own sign with a small sticker reading “home sweet home.” The red sign itself reads:

The hall to your left stretches a few yards from the Control Station, turning to the engine room before that turn is a small door similar to the one you just left. You approach it and open it using the safety code. Upon entering it, you find it as cramped and bright white, as usual, filled with exposed wiring and mechanism. The temperature and humidity control sits in the wall to the right, manual controls and a socket for your use. The left wall holding tanks labeled with either oxygen or “H2O, DO NOT DRINK” all of which funnel into a machine in the back of the room. It always pleases you to see that warning but nothing else of note in the room, even if it is better lit than the Control Station. While in the room you check the oxygen levels, and sure enough, they will last you the trip, the way back to the nearest active station, and more to spare. That last station being one you passed to get to the next warp. Once done in the small space, you leave the room, the door closing quickly behind you with a few clicks locking it tight.

That familiar hole seems so welcoming now, so you naturally make your way over to it. You glide effortlessly down the small ladder and land with a slight thud. The dreary room you land in is barely larger than the used tunnel you came through, with paneling all around except the door in front of you. It is merely a stout door having an overhead light and a small control panel to its right. You slip out of your mechanical hand and slide a few tentacles into the socket on the bottom of the panel. The electric surge flows into you, and you deliver a command to gain access to the room beyond. The light above the door flashes deep red, a low alarm plays and the sound of metal creaking echoes through the room. A little while of this passes before the sounds stop and the harsh light goes green. The hatch unlocks and you step through the doorway. Before you lay a considerably sized circular room, the flooring going all around to the top and back down. A cylindrical shape sits in the center of that room with white untouched paneling, the least accessible part of the chamber at most times. You recognize a barely furnished room, with some simple chairs, a bed, screens every few feet and a man just above, floating just above his chair searching around.
You turn around, close the door and connect to the socket in the wall. You unplug from it, and a gentle hum comes from the center of the room. Once you're done placing your arm back into the “glove”, you note the man snatch a ball out of the air.

“Well hello there” The artificial voice spews forth from your mechanical suit. The man named Tarken turns around with the rubber ball now in his left hand. Casually dressed in loose jeans and no shirt, the man seems unassuming even with his odd features. His entire left arm is clearly robotic up to the shoulder with heavy scaring. The other arm is covered in old cuts and scars, the most noticeable being A large mark going straight up along his upper arm. A large puff of brown hair sits on his head brushed enough to keep out of his eyes.
[Tarken]"You know checking every hour won't make us go any faster."
He says with a calm soothing voice. The humming of the room's engine spinning its axle fills the room. Gravity returns to the room as the objects floating throughout descend gently. "I know, but it's better than nothing." the voice says in an annoyed response.
[Tarken]"Well, how long then?"
[You]"5 warps, so probably another day."
Tarken tosses the ball in the air, it lands back to the ground and bounces. He gets up to go retrieve it.
[Tarken]"Not much longer then. Guess we’ll just sleep it off then."
He chuckles to himself and picks up the ball. Tarken heads to his bed, an old wooden framed bed likely from a century ago or longer given the design. He pops off his mechanical arm and slips into bed. On what can only be described as the furthest part of the room sits a glass container filled with water. It’s what you consider a place to rest, even if humans think it’s a bit much. Your kind doesn’t need to be soaked in water or any such thing to survive, but the water is so comforting to that soft slightly oily body of yours.

You decide to go looking around a bit more, you’re not that tired anyway. You go to open the door as Tarken grumbles to himself and tries to sleep. The sound of metal creaking emanates from the walls yet again, that same light and alarm going off. Not much longer the door’s airtight lock clicks and you’re free to leave. After closing the door, you look back up to the ladder you came down on. You decide to deactivate your suit’s magnetic component to float freely up the tunnel. Upon reaching the top and trying to land on the floor, your magnetic components reactivate. The hall to your left stretches a few yards from the hole, turning into the engine room like the life support room. You walk to the door and open it. The door slides open to reveal an L shaped room. It's not a particularly large room, but it has enough space to store items. To the back of the room is a door labeled COLD STORAGE, DO NOT LEAVE OPEN. To the right, there are shelves with rations, enough to last a handful of weeks. Several boxes of rations float in the low gravity environment, many opened spilling out their contents. To the left are storage compartments for tools and low-grade weapons both labeled with a marker. You feel your small stomach grumble a little, as you look through the food shelving you find your favorite snack “dried fish bits.” It gives you a strange feeling of nostalgia, but you don’t know why. Either way, you pocket the snacks for later.

Open second glance, you check the boxes floating through in the room. The feeling that something besides Tarken left these boxes open. Looking through the contents of the boxes, there’s no sign of rats or any other beast except one. There sits a box on the lowest shelf at the farthest corner with signs of scratching all over the sides and top. Opening the box lets lose a flying eel type creature, these beasts mainly survive in low gravity environments. After some chasing around you grab the creature and stomp its head. You take the corpse to the garbage disposal chute. If there’s anything left of that space station, you might want to have them check for any more infestations.
After that ordeal, you pocket your plastic bag covered snack, with the mission to check the cold storage. The door clicks and you swing it open, to look at the small room. Mostly filled with shelves of meat and other rarities for space travel. As far as you can tell, no eels have gotten into this room or made a nest there. You decide to leave cold storage.

After your adventures with eels, you return to your living quarters pleased. You enter the large circular room to find Tarken is still sleeping and wriggling around in the air a little. As the room returns to normal you exit your suit, crack open those tasty fish bits and spend the rest of your time eating and sleeping in your tank.
You wake up to Tarken banging on your window, you can’t tell what he’s saying, but it’s something important. You begin slithering into your suit as he tells you we’re almost there. Entering the Control Station, you access the terminal and the screen shows a space station in the distance, it’s clearly been damaged by something and a distress signal is going off. No communication can be reached and a docking request is sent. Strangely enough One of the docking stations lights up. Upon docking, a rumble can be felt in the ship, the station is still being destroyed by something.
[Tarken]”Well shit, I guess we’re doing this.”
Tarken goes to storage and grabs a rifle, ready to open the hatch. All radars are clear, no ships to ambush you while in the station. The doors open and there’s nothing in sight, just barrels and boxes knocked around.
The current floor only contains empty rooms besides a crudely barricaded room. The map that was given to you before the trip says there is a Communication control on top, Habitation ring below it, and a large storage shaft all accessed with large and small transportation shaft. Tarken gives a shrug.
[Tarken]”Nothing much here, what do you think?”

Upon quick inspection, the material is pretty sturdy it’d take something strong to break through. The sounds of movement can be heard from the other side, there’s something inside and it’s bigger than an eel. Tarken puts his ear up to the barricade. After a few moments he pulls back and yells out:
[Tarken]”Anybody in there? Hello?”
He knocks on it a few times before a response comes through.

[You]”We’re the reinforcements, what's going on?”
[???]”Reinforcements, thank god. Did you clear out the Armada?”
You’re both a little confused, if there was any such force you would have seen them between now and your last jump.
[Tarken]”The what?”
[???]”The Armada. The horrid mass of ships just outside pelting us with artillery!”
The both of you look at each other, then back at the wall. There may be something wrong with this person.
[Tarken]”It was all clear when we arrived, just debris and your crackling station”
[???]”You’re not kidding? No need to be modest.”
The silence is deafening.
[You]”Are you sure you got attacked?”
[???]“Yes.”
[You]“By who?”
[???]“Well, they were big round looking ships and suddenly our station was attacked. Everyone went on lockdown and with no ships to escape on we’ve been stuck.”
You shouldn’t be so amused, but the realization that these people have been hiding from few asteroids just cracks you up. You’re just barely able to hold it back as the sound of metal scrapping comes from the other side. Enough metal is pulled away from the barricade that a pair of eyes can peek out. The look of desperation was almost as bad as the smell that came from within. Thankfully for you, as a pseudo squid, you can’t really smell but the look on Tarken’s face summed it up enough for you.
[Hank ]“Oh, by the way, the name’s Hank.”
Hank pulls enough debris away to put his hand through, ready for the handshake that will never come. The hand clearly sweaty and strangely covered in smears of browns and yellows. Tarken gives a nice wave and gives as forced of a smile as humanly possible, enough to please poor Hank.

You give Tarken the look and you both decide to get to the access shaft before Hank can escape. Arriving at the shaft in the center of the room you find it has one large cargo elevator and 2 personnel elevators. You decide to plug into the elevator furthest from Hank, but it the small screen above flashes a message:
”Error 320
You go up to the next door, the large cargo elevator. This elevator doesn’t give you an error message but instead opens slowly. It doesn’t open for long before you feel a breeze which gets stronger and stronger as the door opens. You close it before the vacuum of space can suck the rest of the oxygen out of the room.
Finally, you try the last elevator. It opens, but it’s jammed so much it won’t be able to let you in. You may be able to open it with enough force. In the meantime, Hank has cleared out enough rubble to see into the room. You both look away in disgust.

Tarken takes one side as you take the other. You both pull as hard as you can as your tentacle muscles tighten. Tarken’s mechanical arm squeaks whirs as it tries to keep up. It doesn’t take too long before the door finally slides open, sending Tarken to the floor. You both enter the elevator and you plug into the navigation panel. You see the shaft can take you down to the storage shaft and the habitation ring. The Control station has a separate elevator shaft.
[Tarken]”Let’s go to the habitation ring, we might find some help there.”
He says glancing at Hank trying to climb through the heap of trash that was once the barricade. Hank tries waving both hands to get your attention but the door closes swiftly.
Taking Tarken’s suggestion, you both take the elevator up. The ride is a silent one, taking a few minutes. Tarken leans back and tosses that rubber ball. From wall to floor to hand and back to the wall. The rhythm would be very therapeutic if connecting to a system wasn’t so distracting and so satisfying.

The elevator makes a strange noise as it turns. You can see the elevator is waiting for the ring to spin and “catch” the elevator. A slam comes from the side of the elevator and you both feel the full force of gravity hit. Tarken slams to the ground and the ball bounces around. You stay standing steadfast, your endo/exoskeletal suit takes most of the force. Before Tarken can get back up the elevator give a charming ding and its door opens.
The hallway beyond flashes red, the alarm lights still going. The hall is bare, steel paneling with knocked over foliage. The hall extends both ways doors sparsely spread around. You are currently in the Housing Wing, to the right is The Medical Wing, and to the left is the Artificial Ecosystem.

The Medical Wing is a priority, there might be people there! You pass several rooms and the hall opens up into a small lobby. The small lobby is covered in fresh blood, pieces of flesh stuck to the floor. You both know something’s come through here, and Tarken pulls out a handgun. The entryway to the other hall is blocked off by a thick airlock, doesn’t look like you’ll get to the Control Station that way.
To the left is a medium sized door leading to a basic medical station. Wet chomping sounds can be heard coming from inside. You both silently nod to each other and approach carefully. As you peek in, you see the room is soaked with blood with turned over tables and body parts all around. A strange creature about your height sits in the middle of the room, eating what can be assumed is a corpse.

You open door as Tarken takes aim. For a moment the beast stops, not another muscle moves. Tarken aims true, finger on the trigger. Before the beast can raise his head a bullet pierces through its body. A horrid shriek bellows from its mouth before it collapses to the floor wriggling in pain, covering itself in both its prey’s blood and its own. By the time the both of you reach it, the beast breathes weakly, calmly laying on the floor. Tarken gently strokes the monster, trying to ease its final moments. He sweetly whispers to it, “It’ll all be over soon, don’t worry,” and places the gun to the poor thing’s head. He shoots twice, rises and puts the gun back into its holster.

A moment passes before faint weeping can be heard. Looking around at the messy room, tables turned, beds flipped, and items scattered everywhere. “Hello, it’s alright, we’re here to help.” Tarken shouts. The weeping becomes whimpering. You go over to the table in the corner and slide it out of the way. “Found her!” you yell out to Tarken, bringing him over. In the corner is a young brunette woman, dressed in a curdled up the whimpering only getting worse. “Hey it’s alright.” Tarken tells the girl as he reaches out. She slaps it away, screaming “Don’t touch me! Keep away from me!”

The woman is clearly distressed, it’ll take some time to get her to leave her corner. The room is covered in useful materials, you might want to look around.

You tell the woman, trying to calm her down. She screams hysterically, trying to squirm away. ”Don’t come near me you disgusting squid! You subhuman beast!” she screams, running away. Disgusting squid? Beast? You stand there, wallowing in your easily hurt feelings as Tarken goes running after her.

You look down at your synthetic hand, your tentacles wriggling within. Your upper arm, exposed tendrils wrapped around a metal pole. You are a strange creature, aren’t you.

Yes, filled with not muscle but strands of flesh and not lacking steel but bone.

No skin covers this exposed flesh, instead covered in what is cold and fake.

A being connecting with that which is dead, even if seeming alive.

A sad bag of flesh atop, with barely human eyes.

Yes, you are nowhere near human and that is your fate, yet…

Yet there’s no time for this right now, you’ve got a control station to get to. You finally snap out of that funk, now with nobpdy around.

Well, it’s probably not a bad idea to look around the room before you leave. Digging through the mess, you don’t find much beyond trash. One bloodied rag covers… 1 SECURITY CARD. You pick it up, but as it turns out, it wasn’t any security card, it was… 1 BROKEN HALF OF A SECURITY CARD. It may have been important, but you’re sure it’ll probably be fine.

You get up and see something through a small porthole in the wall. Out in the void comes three small ships, kinda crummy looking. Scavengers. These scum are never a good sign, especially for someone stuck on a damaged station or ship. Well, the time for action is now, there’s nothing else to do but…

>Leave

You run out the door, calling out for Tarken. It echoes through the hall. No response. Walking further and further you reach a broken set of doors. The doors lay broken, with bent steel and shattered glass. Stepping beyond, you see a forest, walls and a ceiling of glass all the way to the barely visible end. The sounds of birds and flowing water fills the complex, a fairly peaceful seeming place. You ponder where a deadly creature like the one you just killed would come from in this kind of habitat, or if there are more. The thought also crosses your mind if Hank took your only escape off this shitshow. Guess you’ll cross that bridge when you get there.

The path to the elevator leading to the control station seems like considerable walk, any delay could prove deadly, but being alone could be so much worse...
