Your name is Zhu Zhexian, you're 15 years old, and you're currently employed by the government of Zhaotian Kingdom. In the past couple of months you've passed the Imperial Examinations and become an envoy, gotten the attention of a 1-star Apothecary in the provincial capital, cultivated to become a Heavenly Mortal who can gather qi, and helped defend against a beast horde, among other things.
Now, after being injured in the beast horde's attack, you're staying Lion's Ridge to recover over the next six weeks. You'll receive some sort of promotion and payment for your work in the beast horde soon, but for now you just want the several holes in your body a massive bee stung in to you to be completely healed. You won't be able to cultivate for at least four weeks without injuring yourself, so you'll have to find something to occupy yourself in the meantime.

A couple days have passed since the beast horde and the toxin the bee stung you with is gone, but you still can't exert yourself that much physically given the several wounds it and the mutated Banchian gave you. You'll need to find something to do for the next month given that you can't cultivate without injuring yourself due to the movements. You have access to the library and official's library of Lion's Ridge, among other things, and are trying to figure out what to do. You want to...
>Learn how to cook better, your roadside meals aren't cutting it.
>Read through as many as the county's records as you can in the next month. It won't be too helpful, but you figured it was a decent way to pass the time.
>You read about the basics of the way of the tea and various teas as well as other bits of random etiquette. You have no idea why Meng Hao had so many books about tea, but he let you read them, so you may as well.

oh, probably should've left my twitter in the OP
I post updates on when I'm running there when I'm able to ahead of time. Which isn't often enough, but hey.

>>3142825
You've looked around the library and found that there isn't any knowledge related to being any apothecary that you don't already know there since it's mostly records and books on things such as geography, history, and some "classic" books. There were a few medical reference books and you knew most of the content, but that's because they were very basic rather than because of your wealth of knowledge.
>>

You read through Meng Hao's oddly large collection of books over the way of the tea and some matters of etiquette over the next month. Over this time you come to see that the man has quite the obsession for tea, drinking it with nearly every meal and in between meals once or twice a day. You're not sure whether this is an upper society thing or just a him thing. You guess it's a hobby.
As the weeks pass and you lounge around reading books in the comfortable summer sun, eventually things begin going back to normal. There were initially some people there to stay to investigate the cause of the horde, but eventually they moved further towards the village that was originally attacked instead of staying here.
After a month passes and you're able to cultivate again, Meng Hao calls you to his office. Apparently you and some of the other officials have received various offers for new jobs in return for your effort fighting against the beast horde. You're also handed a bag with slightly over 100 gold coins in it for your efforts.
You grab the note of job briefings and see a note scribbled on top of the stack. It says "You've been profiled as a talented cultivator with limited experience in government. While careful with your troops, you take a lot of risks when fighting by yourself. Depending on the job they might find that last point a good thing or a bad thing. Also, your promotion is due more to your cultivation than any contributions, they don't like keeping officials who could help protect the kingdom out here in the boonies. - Meng Hao"
The briefings describe an officer-in-training program for the army that will take around a year of training, a job as a government-employed bounty hunter, and offers to be a "minor official" in the capital or another major city. You...

Actually, can we get a basic idea of what each job entrails?
>>
>>3142892
>How bad would be refusing a promotion?
>If we choose a bounty hunter will we have base of operation like a messenger or travel from town to town?
>>
>>3142904
my reasoning behind this is if we want to learn to make pills we can't be moving around to different places all the time while doing it. but if all of the jobs involve staying in one place for long periods of time then I change my answer to:
>Want to be a government employed bounty hunter.
>>
>>3142908
The descriptions are rather vague but the officer-in-training program will be a mix of training in tactics, being educated on the rules of being an officer, and whatever physical training normally comes with being in the military. It might be cut short because you'll only need the first two, you're not sure.
The government job as a bounty hunter is basically just working as a government employed bounty hunter (there are also self-employed ones) and taking on jobs which endanger the lives of the populace. You'll receive a stipend and pay depending on who you capture/kill.
Being a minor official in the capital will probably involve you doing errands for some important official in the capital. The pay will probably be better than what you have now, you'll have a chance to meet people, and you'll stay in the capital for the foreseeable future.
>>3142911
Refusing a promotion would probably set you back greatly in a government career path unless you had a good reason.
You'll be assigned a home city as a bounty hunter but have to move around to find the targets assigned to you.
>>
>>3142926
*taking on jobs to kill people who endanger the lives of the populace
as hilarious as that description was, no, you will not be in charge of endangering commoners

You decide that you want to be a government-employed bounty hunter and tell Meng Hao this. He nods before saying "Alright, they have a list of three cities that you can head to here. There's Blue Ridge City, the provincial capital; The Million Swords Fort, a fortified city in a mountain range on the kingdom's southern border; or Metalforge City, a city with large amounts of metal reserves nearby and where two 1-star Blacksmiths live. I thought that general idea is to keep it secret. Hidden from others.
You know with your secretive special technique and stuff
Why chose place where it would be hardest to acomplish?

We can cultivate in our living room or get a training room, I would think,
Capital of the province has a high population so closer to contracts perhaps, and more likely to have a good library.

But yeah, good point.

You know what they say hide in plain sight.
The reason I choose Blue Ridge City was for the contacts, information gathering, and item gathering.

In the long term, it would be best to set up instead of Metalforge who only have smiths which was my close second pick.

Besides we can always hide our strength.

Hiding a tree within a forest. Our main goal just seems to be get enough money and resources so we can cultivate (Food costs) not necssarily hiding it. I was the voter who suggested to act as a healer and not actually reveal our culitvation and fight. It should also be easier to level up our apocrathy skills there as well. We also need to shore up our basic fighting skills and get some battle techniques.

You tell Meng Hao that you'd like to be based in Blue Ridge City and he gives you a sealed letter to hand someone there and tells you that you can leave whenever you want, but that you need to be there in a month. Apparently your monthly stipend will be 20 gold coins a month. The journey should only be a couple of weeks, so you have plenty of spare time, but may as well leave now since there's not much to do here. You say your goodbyes to everyone and begin making your way up the road. You...

You decide to stop by Shield Town on your way to Blue Ridge City and see how Kang Li is doing now that his relationship with Xing Ru should be approved.
Not much happens on the way there and eventually you find yourself in Shield Town once again. From what you recall on your last time through here Shield Town is named after someone born here a few hundred years ago called "The Shield of Zhaotian Kingdom". She served the kingdom faithfully with her mighty strength until dying around a century ago.
You ask a few citizens where Xing Chun, Xing Ru's father, lives, and find out that he has a manor near the center of town. You make your way there and announce your presence to someone at the gate, saying that you're a friend of Kang Li. You're allowed in and brought to a small archery range where he's training.
Kang Li greets you, and fills you in about what has happened over the past five weeks. While Xing Chun didn't completely believe that he was the one to do most of the work in saving her, he couldn't really turn him away, and so he approved the relationship. Now Kang Li is staying at the Xing family's manor and training his archery.
Kang Li says that you'll need to get together and have a meal with him tonight, complete with drink and entertainment. You take him up on the offer and...

Kang Li seems surprised but says "Xing Chun? He'll probably be in his study, let me see if he'll talk with you. He doesn't always accept visitors." You follow Kang Li to a room near the back of the manor and he knocks on the door before saying "Father, you have a visitor." You then hear an angry voice saying "I told you to stop calling me that." before it sighs and says "Who is it?" Kang Li then says "It's Brother Zexian, the boy who was traveling with me when I saved Ru'er." After that you hear a loud noise followed by some fast footsteps. Kang Li barely manages to get out of the door's way before it opens.
The door opens and you see a room filled with books and a tall, gruff-looking man wearing an eyepatch. Several scars are visible on his face and neck. He looks more like a mercenary then a businessman, but you guess looks can be deceiving. He smiles at you and says "Young Master Zhu, come in, come in!" and leads you to a seat before beginning to prepare tea. You're thanked a few times for helping save his daughter, and then Xing Chun says 'Well, Young Master Zhu, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. What business do you have with me?" You...

You ask Xing Chun whether he has any connections in Blue Ridge City, telling him that you'll be staying there for the foreseeable future. Xing Chun says that while he doesn't operate in the city, he does know several people that do business there. One of them is in charge of a construction company, one owns a forge, and another transports goods across the province. He can give you a letter of introduction if you need one.
You then ask Xing Chun whether you'd be able to buy a weapon, or more specifically a sword off of him. Xing Chun says "Well, I don't keep many weapons here, but if you provided the payment I could always send a messenger to Metalforge City to have a weapon made before having them hand it over to you in Blue Ridge City. This would probably take about... a month? You could probably get a sword made by an Apprentice Blacksmith for around 1000 to 2000 gold coins depending on the quality. I'm afraid I don't have the connections to talk to a 1-star Blacksmith, so you'd have to travel there yourself if you wanted them to forge a sword for you." You...

You ask him about what he sells and apparently he mainly deals in general goods such as food, clothes, tools, and that sort of thing. He also does a bit of real estate and is trying to develop a farming division to provide their own food and materials for clothes.
You ask about fighting techniques and he seems confused. He says "Young Master Zhu, sadly I was unable to become a Mighty Warrior despite trying in my youth. I don't really know any fighting techniques either, especially not any that would interest a talented cultivator such as yourself. I'm sure you could ask your father to invite over some old expert, or if you're trying to be self-sufficient, find some sort of training ground in Blue Ridge City." You...

You take your leave for the time being and return to Kang Li. He insists on taking you around the town and you spend the next few hours being shown a few local restaurants and given some souvenirs such as a pound of local tea leaves and some incense the locals like.
Eventually Kang Li brings you to the town's main attraction, a statue of "The Shield of Zhaotian Kingdom". It's a 10 feet tall statue made out of painted marble, and it depicts a muscular woman carrying a red spear that's as tall as her in one hand, while wielding a tower shield in the other. There's a fountain around the statue with various bronze and silver coins littering the bottom since the locals say praying to the statue and providing an offering is good luck.
Eventually you return to the Xings' manor and begin eating a small feast of a dinner. While you're digging into the great food, Kang Li moves next to you and whispers "Brother Zexian, my father is asking if you can introduce him to your father. Would that be possible?" You're pretty sure at this point that Xing Chun thinks you're the son of a merchant or a noble or something. You reply that...

You decide that you'll take the scenic route and look for some interesting tourist attractions on your way to Blue Ridge City. You heard that there was an interesting town a few days down the road, although it's slightly off of the fastest route, so you head there.
Eventually you arrive at the town and aren't struck by anything odd immediately. That's when you notice that there's a set of stairs in the middle of one of the town's streets that just leads directly into the ground. Nobody seems to think it's out of place, and more than that, it seems to have q lot of foot-traffic. You decide that you may as well follow them and go down the stairs.
Down the stairs you see what appears to be a drained and renovated sewer. There are lamps placed evenly throughout the area and the place looks well taken care of. People are bustling back and forth and seem to be having fun. As you walk further into the place you see that various merchant stalls are placed around and there are advertisements about there being almost no taxes here. After asking around for a bit, you find out that this used to be an underground market in the sewers that has now been renovated and turned into a literal underground market.
You look at the swords but figure that there will be a better selection in Blue Ridge City and head on your way.
Another day down the road you come across a wandering man with a shamisen singing about a man who slew a foul beast that stole the kingdom's princess away in ancient times. He's selling lovely songs about traveler's tales of valor for 5 silver coins. You...

You give the man five silver coins and he begins composing a song about your valiant showing in the beast horde.
"On a fateful summer's day, a beast horde approached a town!"
"All of the local experts and such were gathered, to protect the....uh.... town."
"The mighty Zhu Zexian was one of these, and he was sent to command 50 heads."
"These men were not very strong, and so he killed beasts in their stead."
"Zhu Zexian came across a mighty bear, a beast with two heads."
"He slew the bear by his lonesome, splattering his clothes in red."
"After that he fought a giant Banchian, a creature more seafood than any other."
"And while he defeated the creature, he lost two of his brothers."
"Finally, he defeated a terrifying bee, with a stinger like a sword."
"He suffered many injures, so many that it left his companions floored."
"And this is how Zhu Zexian began his path to become a lord."
You feel like your five silver coins were greatly wasted, and you hope you never hear this song recited again. The man hands you a sheet of paper with the lyrics and some basic instructions on how to play the instrumentation and you put it into your pocket before taking your leave.
A couple days down the road you hear about a town where cats roam about freely and decide to head there. After you arrive you see that the rumors were true and that there are in fact cats of all kinds everywhere. Food is left out for them in random places and cafes are built around eating while petting them. There's even a couple of shrines to various cats and it's said that the town's lord owns a cat that's actually a tamed savage beast. It's said to be as powerful as a Heavenly Mortal even though it's as small as a housecat. You're not sure of the veracity of the rumors, but it sounds interesting.
You continue along the road further and while you don't see any more tourist attractions, you do come across an archer and some of his friends on the road. You take a look at them and see that one man is holding a bow while the another has an apple on his head. The rest of the people are watching. It seems like the archer is going to try to shoot the apple off of the other's head. You...

You ask Yu Zhen whether he can get you in touch with an Apprentice Blacksmith to get a sword forged and he hesitantly says "Well... there are three Apprentice Blacksmiths in town who currently take requests for forging. I have one who I'm on decent terms with and I can cash in a favor from him, it's just... he's rather arrogant, so just keep that in mind when you meet him. Just give me a few pointers on pill forging when you become a 1-star Apothecary and the funds to pay for the sword and we'll be even."
After that you ask Yu Zhen where you could go about purchasing a home. Yu Zhen then suggests a few realtors who are on the up and up and some decent locations that don't have prices that are too high. You're curious why he knows so much about this and find out that his father used to be in the business. Well, it makes sense, becoming an apothecary is expensive. You should be able to get one of the smallest homes on the outskirts of town for about 50 gold or a larger one for a few hundred. Next you...

you guys might want to start arguing about what specs you need for a house and where it needs to be located (outskirts of town, center of the city, rural, etc.) so that I can think of a decent price quote

Go visit the realtors and secure some lodging.

Okay, we need rooms for Training and cultivation, a place for alchemy, and a decent kitchen.

Anything else?

I support all that.

How about just get a large house that has everything we are expected to need? after all our pay is quite good and we won't have many expenses after this binge.
>>
>>3143838
Can we get a character list? It's really difficult to keep track of who's who. I'm not good with chinese names.
Also we should get a room in the outskirts with a training room and a seperate room for experimenting with apothecary. Another room for sleeping and one to receive guests.

Next update in about an hour, something came up.

I was planning on making a character list but didn't really have the time to do one before the session, maybe I'll just skip over a session tomorrow and start populating the pastebin with info instead. I had something to do tomorrow that would take a couple of hours anyway, so eh. Anything else you guys need besides a summary of the story so far, our inventory/holdings, the characters, and some basic info about the world?

You tell Yu Zhen that you'll visit him again in a while to actually buy the sword and then spend the rest of your day looking at houses. You already know some good retailing agencies and figured out the specifications for the house you want, so by the end of the day you see a suitable candidate. It's a house located in a pretty nice neighborhood towards the outskirts of the town and it's relatively large. It doesn't really have a yard since it's still in the city, but the location is nice.
The first floor has a parlor, a dining room, and a kitchen, and the basement has a space for storage and rooms that you can refurnish as an apothecary's workshop and a training room. The second floor is about the half the size of the others and has a study, bedroom, and bathroom.
The house costs 800 gold pieces in total, and it will cost at least 300 gold pieces to furnish it if you include the training room and workshop. This would still be rather modest, and you could spend another 100 gold to make the furnishings look normal or 300 more gold to make it look relatively extravagant. You can also spend an extra 100 gold to improve the training facilities with weights that are heavy enough to matter for you and so forth. You feel like this room specifically could be me a money sink if you had more.
Your current funds are 3150 gold pieces and you were planning to spend roughly 1500 gold pieces on the sword. You may still be able to get a sword of a slightly lower quality from an Apprentice Blacksmith for as little as 1000 gold pieces, although you may want to meet up with him first. You...
>Purchase the house. [-800 gold]
>Don't purchase the house for the time being.
and then... (if you purchased the house)
>Furnish it as modestly as possible. [-100 gold]
>Furnish it normally. [-200 gold]
>Furnish it relatively extravagantly. [-400 gold]
As for the training room, you...
>Don't furnish it for now.
>Furnish it minimally. [-100 gold]
>Furnish it decently. [-200 gold]
When it comes around to the apothecary's workshop you decide to...

You sign the lease and purchase most of the furniture from a catalog they have. They take care of delivery and placement of the furniture that way, although there is a slight surcharge. As for equipping the apothecary's workshop, Yu Zhen helps you, and it's mostly just various types of shelves, cabinets, and counters that you have to take care of ordering. Apparently you can maintain the fire under your cauldron with a normal fire, but for actual pill forging Yu Zhen recommends a sort of special wood that remember Gu Xinyi mentioning. The amount you need before forging a pill would depend, but it would probably be sufficient for most Tier-1 pills.
You pick out the training equipment yourself. You get some heavy equipment made for cultivators around your level, such as punching bags filled with god knows what and weights that would basically make you sink in the mud. You also make sure to get decently sized sparring arena in case you get another sparring partner. There are also some training swords that won't break under your strength for sparring and other such miscellaneous things.
After a couple of days you've paid for all of your furnishings and they'll all arrive within the next week or so. Now you have 1950 gold left, most of it earmarked for a good sword. Now that you're free again you...

You go with Yu Zhen to see his acquaintance and are led to a forge near the center of the city. Your first thought upon entering is that the place is absolutely stifling, and your second is that all of the workers here appear to be surprisingly buff and tanned. Well, you guess that's what blacksmiths traditionally look like.
Yu Zhen talks to someone before heading to the back of the workshop into a smaller forge. The equipment here appears to be better, and you can see someone who looks rather handsome, but with less-defined muscles and paler skin than the rest of the blacksmiths. He appears to be in his early 20s. He turns towards Yu Zhen and says "Ah, Brother Yu, how are you? You brought a friend?"
Yu Zhen responds by saying "Brother Qian, this is Apprentice Apothecary Zhu. He's almost as talented as yourself and he could become a 1-star Apothecary before the age of 20 if things go well." The man smiles before he says "He could become a 1-star Apothecary before the age of 20? Well then, I suppose you're right to say that he's almost as talented as me. I'll become a 2-star Blacksmith and you become a 2-star Apothecary, hehe. Anyway, why'd you visit?" Yu Zhen says "Well, Brother Zhu was hoping to have you forge a weapon for him." The Apprentice Blacksmith seems to be thinking a minute before he says something about not being sure, but after Yu Zhen flatters him for some time he agrees to it.
The Apprentice Blacksmith, Qian Yang, turns to you before saying "Alright, what sort of weapon do you need. I can accept payments from 1000 gold to 2500 gold depending on the quality of the weapon you need, since the materials and time taken vary. I specialize in sabers, swords, and bows. If you want a spare weapon I can get one of my employees to make one for 100 to 300 gold." You...

On the way out you see some cheap sets of armor and remember that yours got rather broken in the battle against the beast horde.

You buy a similar set of armor to your old one, just made a bit better, and exit the forge. That's a ridiculous amount for someone like you, and something like eight times what you first came to Blue Ridge City. You have to spend money to make money, or at least that's what you've heard.

Also, assume that we're passively cultivating two/three times a day if not otherwise completely busy. Closed door cultivation is a thing but it's not required and not really feasible at this level. It's also more common among older cultivators who have begun to reach their limits, although young people do it as well, although it's usually for shorter periods of time.

You decide that you'll pop into the bounty hunter's lodge outside of the city first.
The bounty hunter's lodge is a nondescript stone building outside of town. It doesn't have any signage showing what it is, and if you went inside without knowing you'd assume it was an inn or a bar. The first floor has neatly arranged tables with vaguely dangerous seeming people drinking at them. A bar is seated across from the tables. Everyone's conversations are rather quiet, unlike a normal bar. You can still hear a good portion of the people talking though since you're a cultivator, although you feel like the people you can hear aren't trying to hide it. Maybe it's done to weed out the newbies.
Something that immediately stands out is a loudly singing bard with a strange instrument. The bard's instrument seems bigger than a shamisen and has six strings. Besides that you take notice of a large board that covers one wall. The board has innumerable notices pinned to it. You take a look at them and all of them appear to be bounties. Some of them have drawings, some just have descriptions, and the figures listed vary in cultivation from none to people who are in the Body Refinement Realm. You even see one weathered piece of paper that looks like its been up there for years seeking the death of a man in the Early Stages of the Qi Foundation Realm. It looks like its been there for decades and you're measuring the reward money by the amount of 0s.
Upstairs is lounge with various bar games and a group of people playing poker. Above that are some rooms that seem to be by reservation only. You can hear screaming coming out of one of them and quickly head back down the stairs. You...

You ask the bartender about the specifics of being a government-sponsored bounty hunter versus the majority of bounty hunters. He seems surprised and says "Oh? You're a government-sponsored bounty hunter? Damn, they're starting them off young these days. Figured you were a newbie who was about to die from the look of you, but if the government decided you were fit for it you'll probably survive. Anyways, unlike the guys here who pick a contract they like and go after it, your job will usually be to go after contracts the government feels are especially damaging to either the people or the government at large. This generally means bandits, anybody who 'disturbed the peace' too much, or assassins. They'll decide which ones you get based off of how pressing it is and what they know of your fighting strength. They don't want to end up assigning someone too strong to one of their employees and having them die off. Any of the shadier contracts that we decide to keep up where there's a question as to whether someone is even a criminal or not you won't be allowed to take on. Besides and the stipend that there's not too much of a difference. You do win some respect by getting to wear the badge, but don't rely on it too much." You go to Gu Xinyi's manor to check if he's still in the city. You approach and knock on the door of the main building. If you're here to see the master then I'm afraid you'll have to wait, he's at an luncheon right now. He'll be back soon though." You take a seat in the waiting room the butler leads you to but... he really remembered you after one visit? You guess that's a butler's job, but still.
Eventually Gu Xinyi returns and invites you to meet with him in the same room as before. He has the butler make some tea and then says "So, you've returned to Blue Ridge City. Did you come to take me up on my offer from before?" You grimly smile and say "No sir, I'm here because I got promoted. They moved me to a position as a government-sponsored bounty hunter. I'll be based here for the foreseeable future." Gu Xinyi frowns and says "Bounty hunter? No need to take a position as dangerous as that, but oh well. Make sure to visit me in the capital at some point once you have some free time, we can get you officially licensed as an Apprentice Apothecary and you can see the sights. All of the movers and shakers gather there, it's really a pleasant place."
The both of you talk for a bit longer and eventually you get down to the details of Gu Xinyi's stay. Apparently he got enough of the herb he was searching for to make a single batch of pills, but he'd like to get about triple this amount and as a result will be staying in the city for another two or three months.
He says that until he leaves the city he's willing to teach you pill forging while you're both free and that he doesn't mind it delaying his search a bit. He can't really make you a direct disciple in light of your limited availability, as that would be an insult to his other direct disciples, but he can make you a normal one. It would help your reputation and you need to learn how to forge pills, so you don't really see a downside. You...

You fill your javelin-carrier up with eight cheap javelins and stock back up on essentials, but besides that not much notable happens. You can feel yourself slowly drawing closer to the Qi Emission Stage after a month of cultivation and are excited for your breakthrough since then you'll be allowed to attempt to forge a Tier-0 Qi Pill. It will probably still be another couple of weeks until then though.
A couple days before you're supposed to report to work you go to Qian Yang's forge to pick up your saber. You arrive and are led to the back, where Qian Yang proudly shows you a long, sheathed saber. It's almost as long as yourself and the blade has a red sheen to it. The guard is rather minimalist in design but feels good in your grasp. You're satisfied with your purchase and go out to the woods to test it out, where you promptly cut a poor tree to ribbons. You happily note that the saber still looks perfectly fine and are glad you didn't waste 1500 gold coins.
The day you start your job you pick up a new badge and a seal. On top of that you're given your first contract. Your job is to...

Your first contract is to destroy a den of bandits located outside of a village three days to the west. The exact location of their base isn't known and their leader is supposed to have opened their meridians. The reward is 80 gold coins for their leader with an additional gold coin for each bandit who isn't a cultivator, and five for each cultivator.
The group of bandits were first spotted four or five months ago when they began to raid caravans in the area. Shortly after they began to demand payment from the nearby villages and often barged into the village you'll be going to, Windshift Village, to demand free room and board while they partied. Recently things begun to escalate and their leader kidnapped a young woman from the village. She was returned alive several days later, but as a sobbing mess. This was the last straw for the villagers and they put out a petition to the government and scraped together the money to put up a contract.
You're supposed to travel to Windshift Village, find out where the bandits' base is, and then kill their leader and enough of them to make sure they don't reform. Anything you find in their base is yours to keep besides currency which you'll get 10% of. The rest will be paid as reparations to victims who have logged a complaint. Anything you don't take yourself will be resold to pay back more reparations or given to their original owners if they're known.
You head to the village by...

You guess that they've been given a hush order or something at this point, or at least they don't talk to merchants.
You go around the town and ask the same question at a few other places and get almost universally the same answer besides a couple of people who just tell you to be careful on the road ahead but who won't say anything else. Next you...

You stay stay up throughout the night, sneaking out of your inn room and keeping watch near your cart to see if the bandits try to steal your things. In the middle of the night you see a shadowy figure begin to approach your cart before it lifts the sheet and starts looking through your things. All you can really make out is that they're wearing some sort of black hood and that you can't see their face. You look around and don't see anybody else watching them, but they could just be well hidden. You...

They then start leading one of your horses off as they go into the woods.
You follow after the figure from a good distance and while it isn't the easiest to navigate your way through the forest, your eyesight and hearing make up for it. Eventually after the better part of an hour the figure begins approaching a clearing in the forest. The clearing is surrounded by shoddy-looking wooden walls with torches attached to them, and you can see a few rough looking men standing guard in a bored-looking fashion. You can hear some drunk singing come from the clearing. You...

You approach the clearing through the treetops and try to get a better look at the inside.
Inside you see various tents and wooden buildings that look rather shoddily made. There's also a large area that has bonfires, tables, and people who you assume are bandits eating, drinking, and making merry. The camp is centered around the only building here that looks decently made, and you assume that's either where their leader lives, where the loot is held, or both. Looking over the size of the camp and how many people are up you'd guess that anywhere between 300 and 400 people live here. You're not sure if they're all bandits or if some of them have families though.
You observe the camp for a few minutes and their party seems to be winding down and the only people who intend to stay up all night appear to be the guards on the walls and a few who are patrolling around the camp. You...

They don't seem to be eating from any shared food source, although they are drinking from one. You could attempt to poison their water, but it would take you a long time to gather enough poisonous plants and process them. At that point it'd probably just be better to go back to Blue Ridge City and buy concentrated poison as there are people who specialize in this. That would probably cost quite a bit though.

You move towards the walls and wait for an opportunity before jumping up and grabbing one of the guards from the walls. You make a bit of noise but can easily keep their mouth shut and move a safe distance from the camp before anything major happens.
You begin the interrogation by asking him if he's a bandit, which he predictably enough answers yes to. After that you show off a bit of your strength on a tree and explain that he will end up the same as the tree if he starts lying. He seems rather scared, so you guess your threat worked.
First you get him to clarify how many people are in the camp and how the buildings are laid out. There are apparently around 200 bandits and 200 of their family members living in the encampment. The boss lives in the center and most of his loot is kept in a heavily guarded room underneath his home. Under him are about 20 cultivators and most of them are Mighty Warriors. After that you get him to talk about the schedule of the guards a bit and how they visit the villages once a month to collect 'taxes'. There are, as you suspected, plants in each village to keep their mouths shut.

You finish interrogating the bandit and think for a moment before deciding on what to do with him. He looks at you, stuttering something quietly about whether he can leave now, but you quickly unsheathe your saber and cut his head off. His body limply falls to the ground as his head rolls a short distance away, a shocked look left on it. At least it probably didn't hurt. You cut off an ear for the reward since a head is too much to carry before the body in a shallow grave and covering it in brush.
After that you head back to Windshift Village and pack up what's left in your cart. There's still enough food left for you to live on and even if there wasn't you know how to hunt, so that won't be problem. You will need to get your other horse and your medical supplies back when you raid the camp though. You hide the cart in the woods outside the village before searching for herbs that could be considered a poison.
It takes a lot of effort and some ingenuity, but eventually you get enough herbs together to make a concoction that will cause a variety of unpleasant effects to whoever eats it. It was a pain refining them without a mortar and pestle, but you made do. This could probably kill the average person, although you can't test it. As night falls you...

You decide to sneak into the camp that night and start dealing with the bandits. You first get onto a tree near the walls and then aim to jump into the camp. The only problem is that you jumped a bit too far when you did this and ended up falling on a small tent belonging to one of the bandits and crushing whoever was inside. This, understandably enough, caused a loud noise, leading everyone nearby to look in your direction. You put your hand on your saber and...

You decide that since you're here you should get rid of some bandits and pull out your saber. You charge towards the nearest group of bandits and swing it through the air, the light of the fire reflecting off of the almost comically long blade. Three bandits fall with a massive cut in their chests with your first slash, and the heads of two more fly through the air with your next slash. In the next minute you kill or wound about 30 bandits. It's honestly easier than when you had to deal with the waves of tigers and bears, as by comparison the skin of people is much thinner than the pelts of beasts.
As you begin your rampage you hear a lot of yelling start up among the various groups of bandits. Some of the voices are angry, some of them are scared, and the vast majority of them seem confused. After a minute you and your blade are covered in blood and quite a few injured bandits surround you. Around this point in time you see a man with a long scar across his forehead and tanned skin begin moving towards you at an extremely fast pace. Behind him are about 10 people who he's slowly leaving behind him. You guess that he's the leader and those are his officers. You...

The bandits' leader is now simply staring at you as he backs away, trying to escape. You can't let him leave that easily when he's injured and charge forward, saber in hand. His eyes widen and he immediately moves his sword to block your strike. Your saber is almost at his neck when he successfully blocks it, but the force behind the blow still sends him falling to the ground. You swing again and stab him through the neck once he falls, but at the same time he grabs a knife from the ground before swinging it towards your chest. You dodge as best you can but it still leaves a decent wound in your side.
You lift yourself off the ground, before staring at the rather shocked group of bandits. They all have their weapons drawn at this point and have surrounded you. They for the most part look scared but determined. This could be a problem. It wasn't much of a problem when they were surprised and disorganized, but their sheer numbers at this point leaves the outcome uncertain now that they're all focused on taking you down. You...

You decide the encirclement isn't a problem and grab your saber before attacking them again. Given that the surrounding villages will kill them if they find them and they won't be able to survive in the wilderness on their own, the bandits are in a kill or be killed mentality, focusing all of their strength on making sure you die. You're faced with quite a few bandits charging at you with no sense of self-preservation as the battle continues on, and your wounds begin to build up. As the numbers begin to whittle down their morale falls, and you see that some of them are running away to gather whatever they have left and make a run for it, however likely it is that they'll die after leaving here. You've been wounded several times and are now covered in various cuts and bruises. Adding to the fact that you're covered in a combination of your blood and the blood of a massive amount of bandits, your body is more or less completely red at this point.
At this point about 60 bandits are left and you see a group of ten leave the crowd and begin moving towards you. By their movements they all seem to be cultivators, although they're probably only Mighty Warriors. They're probably what's left of the upper echelons of the bandit camp. They move towards you and you counter, but by acting in combination you're forced to slowly move back to avoid suffering more wounds. You can deal with them, but you might suffer major wounds doing so. You...

I generally just alter DCs instead of adding to the roll, but in this case battle rolls aren't needed because endless mooks means a near uniform result. You begin moving towards the center of the camp in an attempt to use the leader's home as a chokepoint. On your way there you begin throwing javelins, missing with most of them but managing to impale one of your enemies with one and maiming the arm of another. This causes them to follow further behind you and you up your speed before reaching the leader's home.
Once you're in the home you see a few normal bandits trying to rob the vault and quickly kill them before they can take off with anything. After that you move some of the furniture within the home to help make a chokepoint out of the entrance and sit down to rest before closing your eyes.
You hear movement outside and open your eyes again, staring at the door and keeping away from the walls just in case anyone has the bright idea of trying to stab you through them. You see one of the cultivators from before enter and you stab him before punching him off of your blade, causing him to fall on the man behind him. Despite this sight the cultivators keep coming forward, but you take care of another two or three before they begin running away. Emboldened, you chase after them and manage to stop them before they can escape. You cut off their ears for the bounty before...

If you return to banditry I will come once more and slaughter you again. Pick up honest work or be beheaded by my blade." You don't really hear a response, but it probably worked.
You head to the leader's bedroom and look around. The room is a lot more... normal than you expected. There's a comfortable bed with quite a few pillows on it, a desk with some papers and bottles of alcohol scattered across it, a table in the corner with tea brewing, and a dresser. You take a look at what's on the desk and see that the bandit was keeping a journal and a book keeping track of their funds rather meticulously. There's also a faded book that describes some basic sword techniques. It's probably not worth that much, but you can still get a pretty penny for it.Thinking about it, you should probably buy some manuals on these sorts of things yourself. You pocket the books and the most expensive looking bottle of alcohol before heading into the vault.
Inside the vault you find a large pile of gold coins and various bottles of alcohol, bolts of nice fabric, ingots of metal, spices, and various other things. You can't haul most of it yourself. After bathing you wrap up your wounds and head to sleep for the night. In the morning you tell the townsfolk again and get a mix of thanks and doubtful but hopeful statements of "Really? They're dead?" You tell them to make sure to haul what's left back to the village for the government to collect and start making your way back to Blue Ridge City.
Several days later you're back in Blue Ridge City and you turn in your many ears and the leader's head. You see them examining the sinews of each ear for a while, as apparently a cultivator's will look different from a normal person's, and eventually you're rewarded with 237 gold coins. 80 for the leader, 55 for cultivators, and 92 for the rest. They tell you that they'll call you back for another contract in a week or two and send you on your way for the time being. That means you've made about 490 gold coins and a few hundred in goods. You decide that you should figure out how to better handle your weapon and look around the city. After asking around you figure out that there's a placed called the Combat Hall near the center of the city where one can train and fight. People put their services up for hire there and so you could probably find a few willing and able saber users there to teach you. You could also find one of the book stores near the center of the city with an introductory saber technique. There are other capable saber users throughout the city, but there's no reason for them to teach you, so you'll have to settle with one of these two choices. You...

You make your way towards the center of the city until you're eventually standing in front of a large, marble building with a massive plaque that says "Combat Hall" in front of the building. The traffic in and out is pretty heavy but can't compare to the commercial streets since there are less people interested in fighting then there are interested in buying goods. You enter, passing by several heavily armed guards who are giving off of a rather fierce qi. Given that you're not yet in the Qi Emission Stage your ability to sense qi is limited, so they must be showing their power on purpose.
After going inside you see... something quite different from what you expected. There are various employees helping guests around and people chatting over refreshments at clumps of chairs and tables. Some of them look like young lords, some like grizzled veterans, and others like commoners. There doesn't seem to be a commonality to the class of the people inside. You eventually manage to flag down an employee and they show you to a massive book that lists the tutors that are available. They're divided by category and the combat hall can contact them for tutoring sessions, and in exchange for their service they take a small fee.
You begin looking through the saber portion of the catalog and see that the majority of the tutors are listed at 3 silver an hour or 6 silver an hour. From the short notes in the catalog and from a few questions you ask the employees and people around you, these seem to be standard rates for people who are either hobbyists, used to be soldiers, or the like. They're not particularly accomplished but the rate is lower and they can teach your average person how to use a weapon. Most likely none of them are cultivators, although that doesn't matter as much as skill in any one field here.
You look through the higher priced tutors and see that they slowly scale up to about 5 gold per hour before the vast majority have notes saying "Not taking on new students.", "Background required.", "Pass your application to my servant.", or even more direct statements. One of them is priced at 50 gold per hour and just says "Don't contact me if I don't know you." You guess that they're not the most skilled people in the city, but they're the most skilled that are willing to list themselves in the catalog. You did see a few at the very front which were priced at a single copper per hour and which were just marked "Extreme saber talents only. Tryouts will be held at X date." They're probably old masters looking to pass on what they've learned to a worthy disciple or something of the like.
You're not particularly talented in the saber from what you can tell, but you do have money. Whoever you hire would probably end up teaching you for a few hours four times a week if you wanted a full-time saber teacher, or maybe only twice a week if you didn't want to place that much weight on it. You...

You decide to sell off the goods at the flea market, but first you swing by Qian Yang's forge to see if he's interested in buying some of the weapons and the few metal ingots you found. You ask him but he immediately dismisses the weapons since he's not going to sell anything made by someone who doesn't work at his forge, but he gives you a little over 30 gold for the metal.
After that you head to the flea market. You keep some of the alcohol and spices for your kitchen and then start trying to figure out how to price the rest of the goods.
>>
The goods aren't exactly common and vary greatly, so your attempts to find prices for them are kind of futile. Eventually you do manage to find a ballpark for most of them though and label them before laying out the goods.
The day starts without many sales since you don't have any sort of reputation and what you're selling isn't cheap, but eventually things get moving and you end up selling about 30 gold worth of goods by the end of the day. You're not sure whether you got what they were worth since you aren't a merchant, but it's probably enough.

You decide to go to Gu Xinyi's estate to chat for a bit until your appointment at the Combat Hall and make your way out of the city. Within 10 mintues you're at his manor and his butler ushers you in. He isn't particularly busy and so he begins to tell you about the capital and various other major going-ons. He would teach you more about pill forging, but there isn't really enough time until your appointment so you both set it aside for later.
Gu Xinyi tells you about the Royal Tournament in the capital and how it's used to evaluate young talents, about how the princes compete to determine who the best to inherit the throne is, and about how the king maintains authority.
The Royal Tournament is held once a year in the capital and it has under-18, under-30, and open divisions. The under-18 and under-30 divisions are taken as chances to show off young talent and to compete for face among various families, while the open division is a chance for the old monsters from each faction to show off their strength and for battle junkies to have fun. Apparently the royal family generally abstains from competing unless it's a special circumstance or one isn't likely to inherit into a very important position. They prefer internal competitions that don't expose the extent of their strength to decide on things such as inheritances.
The king's stance on maintaining authority relies on absolute power, and in this case while the king's cultivation is on par with the top experts of the kingdom, it would still be possible to assemble the rest of them and overthrow him. The absolute power comes from the millennia of rule the Zhaotian dynasty has had to acquire resources and prepare safeguards against various threats to themselves and the kingdom. On top of this, the king maintains his power through keeping a good relationship with other experts of the kingdom. While talking may seem like it runs counter to the idea of absolute power, it warrants thinking about. Sure, one may want to seize power and believe that they can challenge the king, but what about if you add 10 cultivators equal to the king to the mix? Then it becomes a suicide mission. To summarize, it's a combination of carrot and stick.
After this Gu Xinyi asks you whether you'd rather hear some whimsical and questionably true stories from the kingdom's olden days or if you're fine with hearing him prattle on a bit more about the kingdom's politics. You...

You tell Gu Xinyi that you'd be fine hearing more about the kingdom's politics and he starts talking in detail again.
Gu Xinyi tells you that there are a group of five clans throughout the kingdom that are simply referred to as the "Five Families". They're the Tan, Qian, Yi, Du, and Shen families to be more specific. They wield the greatest power among the various clans within the kingdom and compete among each other in the Royal Tournament, raising qualified successors, succeeding in business ventures, and all sorts of other things. All of them are loosely tied to the royal family through various marriages and as a result support it fully. If any outstanding genius shows up from one of the clans they'll generally be wed to an important princess and be nurtured as a candidate for a future king.
In addition to competing among each other, there's also fierce competition within each clan. The clans will generally have a main family which may rotate depending on which faction has the most power at the moment, and various side families who are spread across the realm. Young prodigies will receive the most backing regardless, but it's easiest if they're from the main family since there are conflicts between various branches in attempts to promote their interests.
Besides the five families there are several major clans of cultivators in the kingdom. The only ones that wield comparable strength to the five families are the Wave-riding Sect and the Thousand-Mountain Hall. One practices techniques based in water while the other practices techniques based in the elements of earth or metal.
Gu Xinyi then tells you a bit about Zhaotian Kingdom on an international scale, and all that you really get is that you're a weak nation that's kept alive to maintain the status quo. If another nation invaded then the kingdom would almost certainly fall unless another interfered to maintain the balance of power. You're rather dismayed to hear this, but you suppose that it could be worse.
The chat comes to an end and you make your way to the combat hall for your training session. You grab the piece of paper from yesterday and navigate to the training room indicated. Eventually you find yourself in a small room with a training dummy and a couple of other basic amenities and sit down to wait for your teacher to arrive.
Five minutes later a man in his 40s dressed in rough leather armor walks in. A large scar mars his face and stringy gray hair falls to the saber sheathed at his waist. You confirm that he's your teacher and he begins going through the fundamentals of how to use a saber. You weren't completely unaware of these before, but it's still useful to have it pointed out by someone. You feel like not all of these hold true once you're at a higher level of strength though , so you'll have to experiment and figure out the differences yourself. The man corrects your grip slightly and gives you a practice routine. You...

You focus on your training and cultivation during your time off and eight days after you've arrived back in Blue Ridge City you feel something odd happening within your body. While cultivating you feel like the energies within your body have begun pushing up against a barrier. This is probably the bottleneck that exists between being a Heavenly Mortal and the Qi Emission Stage. You continue cultivating and the energy within your body begins hammering against the bottleneck, ebbing back and forth. You feel like you're just a small distance from being able to break through the bottleneck and frown.
You may not be able to break through now, but you do have those two Qi Pills that Gu Xinyi forged and gave to you. If you take them now you may be able to break through the bottleneck, although the energy contained within is more than you've controlled before. You...

You pop a pill into your mouth and it begins melting on your tongue as your movements speed up to keep up with the energy gushing into your body. Over the next half an hour the medicinal essence flows into your body as you work to break through the bottleneck. It seems like it's a bit short of working so before the opportunity can pass you place the other pill into your mouth and begin eating it as well.
The energy flowing through your body at this point is all together too much, but you feel your bottleneck breaking. Your movements become frenzied as you feel a slight pain all over your body from the rampant energy and the intense exercise. Over the next ten minutes the pain increases until you feel something break and the excess energy suddenly shoots out of your body, destroying one of your punching bags.
After a moment you realize that your ability to sense qi is far sharper than before and that you can, albeit very unstably, cause it to leave your body. It seems like you've made it to the very beginnings of the Qi Emission Stage.
You glance at your cultivation technique and see that writing has appeared on another page. It says "My spiritual will has detected that at this point you've decided that you're willing to avenge me. Congratulations, this book won't self-destruct. Instead, you'll be receiving a few things I kept for whoever found this. The cultivation technique for the Qi Emission Stage will also be listed. I'll explain a few things for you at this point. This book was sealed using spatial laws and was set to appear when someone with a constitution compatible with the technique appeared. It's not that there's some special bloodline you have, it's just that this technique hasn't been tested yet and should only theoretically work on someone with a body extremely similar to mine. I left it in the palace of Iron City, the capital of Unbar Kingdom, so it should only take a few hundred years to find an owner. Hopefully. Anyways, I won't include any weapons or battle techniques since that would undermine the entire point of cultivating and if you were able to access the palace you should be able to get something good enough. What I will include is my tamed beast as a guardian for you and a syringe of blood-red crystals which you should inject into your eyes. It can bring forth a beneficial change in your bloodline if you use it at a young enough age and a low enough cultivation realm. It shouldn't make you incompatible with the technique so, don't worry. Oh, and the guardian beast should stay alive for about... I dunno, 10,000 years? Either way, you'll be able to protect yourself by the time he's dead or you'll have died already. Uh... I guess that's all, I'm really bad at writing out these inheritance things. Talk to you when you reach the Body Refinement Realm I guess."
>>
>>3151559
As you finish reading you see the book spit out a syringe full of blood red crystals and a bunch of faded bones. The bones land on your floor before immediately turning into ash. You consider the idea that the ash might be full of qi or something at first, but as far as you can tell it's completely ordinary. You guess that's what happened to the guardian beast, meaning its been far more than 10000 years since the writer of the book died. And this was in a palace? It was left in a tiny ruin. Right now you're struggling to get techniques that are good enough, you could'nt have left at least one or two in with the rest of it? Dammit. Oh well, at least the syringe full of blood red crystals seems alright. You inject it into your eyes for the time being and feel a sharp pain. You then see words in the book appear describing...
>A bloodline which gives the user the ability to see some ghosts and spirits.
>A bloodline with the ability to regrow their eyes and to see through any of their eyes, even if they've already been pulled out of their socket. ie you could tear out your eye, leave it at home, and then always be watching your front door while away from home. You read over the words in the book and find a description of a bloodline which gives the user the ability to see various ghosts and spirits depending on the purity of the bloodline and the user's strength, among other things. As you finish reading you feel another sharp pain pass through your eyes and spend the next couple of days holed up, enduring repeated waves of pain. You even feel an intense, unpleasant itching from the center of your eye. You want to claw at the damn things to deal with the pain, but then you'd lose them. At many points blood drips from your eyes, but eventually the pain subsides and they appear to go back to normal besides the fact that your eye color is now a lighter shade of blue. You guess you you'll just have to wait until you come across a ghost to see if it worked.
You begin solidifying your cultivation in the Qi Emission Stage so that you'll have a chance to make a Tier-0 Pill, and the opportunity comes the day before you're given your next contract. You naturally don't succeed on your first try, but it was good practice at emitting qi and handling the cauldron. You'll just have to keep learning from your mistakes until you succeed.
Then the time finally comes and it's time to take on another contract. You're given a contract to...

You get a contract to kill or capture an arsonist who burnt down several government buildings in a town less than a day to the east. The incident happened two days ago and eyewitnesses spotted the man leaving into the forest with a cart yesterday. He had pale skin, brown hair, was relatively thin, and was dressed in a normal commoner's clothing, You're given a rough sketch of him and told that his strength should be on par with yours since he's a Heavenly Mortal who can gather qi. The reward is 200 gold coins. You're then sent out with the contract.
You head to the village and manage to arrive there around nightfall. You...

You go to examine the burnt down buildings and make your way towards the center of town. The two buildings are next to each other, leaving a large, empty plot of land covered with chunks of burnt wood and ashes. You approach the ashes and begin looking around. Nothing seems particularly odd, but you notice that there are quite a few sets of footprints. This could be useful if there was only one, but more people must have left them when they came to investigate or fled the building. Damn.
Eventually you keep looking around and find that one area gives off a sharp smell other than ashes. It smells sort of like lamp oil. You look around the area and see that there are some traces off oil dripping away from the fire, but they stop after about 20 feet. You follow them and just reach the middle of a nearby street. You do happen to so a small portion of a footprint off of the main path though, so that may be the arsonist's. Now that you've checked out the building you...

You ask around town to try to get more information about the arsonist and the townsfolk tell you that he lit the building on fire and actively stopped the flames from being put out by the townsfolk. Apparently he let everyone leave the building safely besides the town's mayor, who he simply broke the legs of and left inside the burning building. They assume the two had some sort of grudge, but nobody knows what it could be.
You get a couple conflicting descriptions of the arsonist, but the majority match up with the sketch and info you were given. You ask about where he left into the forest and are shown a stretch of about 100 feet of greenery and told that it's the general area. You don't immediately spot any tracks, but you could if took some time to look. At this point it's getting to be very late so the last of the town goes to sleep and you end your questioning. You...

You decide to talk to the mayor's family to see if you can't figure out why exactly this happened. It's not really a part of your job, but you're interested.
You go to the mayor's home and find four women chatting around a table. You introduce yourself and ask who they are, and find out that they're his wife and his three concubines. Apparently there are four children upstairs and another eight who live on their own by now. Wow, he was... active. The townsfolk told you he was in his 50s before he died but the oldest of these women is 46. The youngest appears to be in her early 20s.
You ask about what the mayor was like before he died and their general consensus is to tell you that he fulfilled his responsibilities well-enough and provided for them and their children, but that he didn't pay as much attention to them he could have.
You then ask if he had any reason for someone to want to kill them and all they can come up with is maybe some sort of political dispute. He never did anything immoral, so there shouldn't be any reason for someone to take revenge. You...
>Ask if you can talk to any of the children.

You decide that's enough asking around at the mayor's family since you don't find anything suspicious and make your way to the largest tavern in the town. You then ask various customers about the mayor, and most them say that he was a capable enough man that kept his nose clean. A few people criticize him saying that he was lecherous, but don't really have any examples to show this besides the amount of concubines he has. He seemed to treat them alright, so you can't really come to any conclusions. Maybe it was a political rival. You...

You ask where you can find people who worked with the mayor and find that there are plenty of old officials in town, but that his assistant and a friend of his, a merchant, have both gone on vacation since the arson happened. You're not sure if this is a coincidence or if they're leaving town because they fear that they're next.
You then go to the stretch of woods from before to look for footprints and after about an hour manage to find a footprint and a very faint trail of a cart. Shortly up ahead the trail from the cart disappears and the footprints turn more clear. Maybe he started carrying the cart. As this is happening you see a very faint wisp of smoke above the forest. It could be related to the incident, or it could be someone camping out. You...

You make your way to the smoke and arrive after a couple of hours. As you approach the smoke becomes slightly thicker, but doesn't seem to be a major fire.
Once you arrive you find a very confusing sight before you. You see a cart doused in oil with a rope on it leading to a campfire, and above that campfire is a very confusing system to delay lighting the fire. This system to delay the start of the fire seems to be a sort of improvised pully where water slowly dripped into a container until the weight was enough to cause a container that smells like oil to fall onto the campfire. The campfire seems to be in full burn while the rope leading to the cart is about half of the way finished burning. You put out the fires so that a forest fire won't start before examining the area for footprints. You can find a very faint trail, but it seems to be coming from here, not going. You...

I'm gonna head out for now, next session will probably be in about eight hours. Also, I'm aware that the system I described to delay the cart catching on fire may have multiple flaws, but I have no idea if such a thing as an extremely long burning fuse would be obtainable in this setting so it was the best thing I could think of.

You follow the footprints back to their source and eventually arrive back at the town at the exact same set of footprints that were from the arsonist. You guess he just walked to the location of that firestarter once he left town, but you have no idea where he went after that. The way the thing was rigged up he probably hasn't been there for a while. You...

You look around town to see if you can hire some sort of tracker to assist you. You're led to the home of an old man who spends most of his free time hunting in the nearby woods. Apparently he knows the area around here well and is skilled in tracking both prey and people. You pay him a few gold coins and then lead him to the location of the fire-starting contraption.
He takes a look around for about five minutes until he notices that a few spots have more leaves on than ground than is normal for this time of year. He also noticed that there were a couple of broken branches from the trees above him. He figures that whoever left here was jumping from tree to tree, making it much harder to track them. You might be able to catch up given long enough, but following their trail would take quite a while, especially compared to the speed they were travelling at. You...

You have the tracker find the general direction of the trail while you keep watch on the clearing where the firestarting contraption is. An hour passes without any incident and he tells you that it seems to be heading back towards Blue Ridge City. Well, you can go back to Blue Ridge City, but the likelihood is that they've already put up some wanted posters there and you won't be of much help in a massive city. If the arsonist doesn't do anything unusual then you wouldn't be surprised if they stay hidden for months. You...
>Head back to Blue Ridge City anyway, it's your best bet in case the arsonist does something else.

You have the tracker help you follow the trail to wherever it leads and begin a slow journey through the forest. It's not exactly fast progress, but the man seems pretty skilled and now that he knows what signs to look for manages to keep on the trail. Night falls and the two of you camp out in the forest before continuing to follow the trail of the arsonist the next day.
In the afternoon you come across what you think was his campsite for a night. There's quite a few sticks and leaves in one place and the tracker thinks that he used them to make some sort of lean so that he could protect himself from the elements for the night. There's no trace of a campfire, probably because he didn't want to be found.
More time passes and around nightfall you make it to the outskirts of Blue Ridge City, where the trail ends. You guess he ended up making his way here. It'll be nearly impossible to find him now unless he does something on his own. You...

You buy a few recent newspapers and head to the officials' lodgings to begin pouring over some newly made records. You look over the information deep into the night and while none of the fires say that arson is suspected, a few of them have deaths. Among those, one of them catches your eye. It simply says a small vacation home a ways outside of town burnt down and the owner died inside. The owner, however, shares the same name as the mayor's assistant. This can't just be a coincidence. You head to sleep for the night, ready to check out the burnt down home tomorrow.
The next day you make your way outside of town to see the site of the fire yourself. There isn't anything unusual about it, merely a pile of ash in the middle of a rather scorched field. From what you can tell it spread naturally, although you're not sure what caused it and you're not an expert. According to the neighbors the owner of the place was on vacation and died in his sleep after a fire started in his home. The fire happened two days ago. You can't find anything suspicious about the fire besides the person who died, but still, this couldn't just be a coincidence, could it? You...

In short order you figure out that the merchant is actually a fairly major one, and while his family lives in the town nearby, his main business operations are out of Blue Ridge City. After several hours you figure out that he has a few major shops in the city, one home in the city, and one home about half an hour out of the city. You keep watch over the manor outside of town, only taking short breaks to purchase food and check on whether the arsonist may have purchased any more lamp oil or other firestarting equipment while in the city. The sheer number of shops in the city and the amount of lamp oil used every day stops you, but you still think it was worthwhile if only because you were getting bored to death staring at the manor.
Over the next couple of days information trickles in and while you can't figure out where the merchant is hiding, you feel confident in thinking that he isn't in a couple of the locations you have people staking out. Eventually the people you have staking out places realize that they aren't the only ones watching the shops and homes.
At the cafes and shops they find refuge at all day, they have friends doing the exact same job. At first they thought they were just regulars, but who sits at the same cafe every day doing nothing? You talk to the young man you were following and he quickly tells you that hes been being paid to watch a shop every day and report on anyone who enters and exits the place, what they're doing, and anything else that seems odd. They swear that they aren't involved with whatever is going on and that they don't know anything else. You ask the woman if this is true and she says nothing. You...

You send the guy into the bathroom while you go to interrogate the woman. You keep asking who she is, why she's here, why she wants this guy to stake out the shop, and she doesn't respond at all. You get slightly violent but even then she doesn't really budge. You search her pockets and only find the keys to the hotel room and maybe 10 gold coins. You're not really sure where to go from here. Your superiors definitely have ways to make people like this talk, while you're just kind of slapping her around and hoping to get her to answer your questions. You could try to torture her, but you're not sure how it works and it turns your guts a bit to think about it. Plus, you'd need to bring her to your home first, it's too busy here and you at the least have a basement. You...

Well, you're not going to get very far with these two, you guess you may as well turn them both over to your superiors, they can make people talk. You grab them both and start taking them out of the hotel, ignoring the confused looks the employees are throwing you. You manage to reach where your boss stays without trouble and explain the situation to him.
After you're done explaining he nods and says "Alright then. good work. Looks like the contract has been more trouble than we expected. I'll have someone get info out of this woman and then give it back to you so that you can finish the job. In the meantime get the other couple of people who were spotted staking places out and send them to us. You say "Alright sir, I'll be back when I'm done with that." and then go back to catch the other couple of people.
Within an hour you're done catching the other couple of men as neither of them are cultivators. You ask both of them some questions along the way and the same as the first man they just swear that they're being paid and that they don't know why who they're working for even wants this done. Well, you guess that's what you expected. You then hand the men over to your superior and get some rest.
The next morning you wake up and receive a message with the location of the merchant. You guess your boss took care of finding him for you so he doesn't... well, die in a fire. Apparently he was in one of his shops that sold clothes and textiles. After telling the people you had staking out the merchant's possible locations that they're out of a job you...

You make your way to the shop from before and take a quick look around the street before entering, you badge hidden in your hand. Upon entering the shop you act as any other customer would, spending a few minutes looking around at various clothes and pieces of fabric.
Eventually you gesture to one of the helpers and ask him if he can answer a question about a product for you. He quickly comes over to you and once he's within a couple feet you flash your badge for him to see and quietly say "I'm here to talk to the shop's owner in private, I know he's here." The helper seems confused and mutters something about the merchant not being in Blue Ridge City and you frown before asking to see the manager of the shop.
You're led to the owner of the shop and shown to a back room where he assures you that the shop's owner isn't here. You then ask him to mention an arsonist to the owner and then see if he's still not here afterwards before heading back out to pretend to look at products for a bit longer. About five minutes later the shop's manager comes back and tells you to follow him.
You're led into the basement of the shop and the shop's manager opens a crate. You're slightly confused until you see that inside the crate is nothing besides a hallway that leads to door made out of a dark, expensive looking wood. You follow the shop's manager and he knocks on the door, saying "Sir, the bounty hunter is here." before back upstairs.
The door opens and you see a large, expensively furnished room with all of the necessities one would need to survive. It seems like the room is functioning as a bedroom slash living room and there are a few other wooden doors that lead to the rest of the place. Inside the room is a fat man who appears to be in his 50s or 60s. He looks amiable enough and is dressed is expensive-looking clothes of purple and gold. You're not sure if that's fancy or just gaudy.
The merchant shakes your hand before introducing himself to you, although you already know his name. You introduce yourself to him and then explain that you'll be watching his shop. He thanks you and shows you that he has another exit up a ladder that comes out into a thick shrub on one of his close friends' properties, recommending that you keep an eye on that as well. You say that you'll keep an eye out before coming to the main point you have on your mind. You stare at the merchant before saying "So... why exactly are you being hunted down by an arsonist with a grudge? What exactly did you, the mayor, and his assistant do to make somebody want to methodically burn you all to death?"
The merchant's seems surprised and says "What'd I do? I have no idea. My close friend died in a fire and I decided to come to Blue Ridge City to cheer myself up. Once his assistant died I decided to go into hiding and now you're telling me that my fears were justified. I'm just a victim." You're getting the idea that the merchant is hiding something, but you're not sure what. You...

You frown and tell the merchant that if he had only went into hiding after the mayor's assistant died he probably would've been dead by now. You then ask him to tell the truth. He frowns and tells you that he has told you nothing but the truth and that it's your job to catch the arsonist, not to interrogate him over whatever suspicions you have. Your job is to catch criminals, not to interrogate the victims. He seems to go into a bit of a huff after that and you leave.
You take watch of the shop and the shrubbery of the building next door from a near by rooftop, grabbing some food and other essentials to wait this out. You don't find out anything watching the place for the day and that night you're given a message from your superiors again. Apparently they managed to get some information from the woman and got it summarized for you.
The woman in her early 20s is a student of the arsonist and possesses the strength of a Lasting Warrior. They're both part of an unimportant cultivator clan nearby and the arsonist joined the clan after kneeling outside it for days. He was covered in grievous burn wounds and simply said that he needed power to protect what mattered. He was suspicious-looking, injured, and already in his 30s so most of the clan simply ignored him. One elder, however, saw potential in him and took him under his wing.
After his wounds healed the arsonist managed to reach the peak of being a Heavenly Mortal, Qi Gathering, in six years, defying the clan's expectations given the fact that he was already in his 30s and had never cultivated before. Around this point he took the woman as his student and begun planning for his revenge. According to the woman the mayor had lusted after the arsonist's wife, who was serving as a servant in his manor. One day the mayor ravaged her and threatened her to keep quiet or else she'd be called a liar by everyone and put out of a job. The wife eventually told the arsonist this, and he confronted the mayor. This led to the mayor burning down their home in the middle of the night, attempting to kill both of them. The arsonist managed to barely escape the home and flee into the night.
The report has a note at the bottom remembering that the testimony could be untrue and to use your best judgement. It's not like there's evidence either way. You...
>Continue the stakeout, you've already tried to get the truth out of the merchant. What matters now is waiting for the arsonist.

You decide that at this point looking into the motives doesn't matter, the merchant has already made his stance on telling you about what's happening clear. You just need to wait for the arsonist to show up for now.
A couple of days pass until eventually, while keeping watch in the middle of the night, you just barely see someone in a dark robe traveling from rooftop to rooftop. You watch them for a moment, wondering whether they're just a stray cultivator, but see him stop near the shop that's now empty besides the merchant. They then begin pouring out some liquid from a container.
You move from where you are to his location and they catch sight of you. They drops their things before beginning to dash away at full speed. They throw a few knives at you, although you can tell they're not aiming for your vitals. You're able to easily dodge and over the course of about 30 seconds manage to catch up to them. You tackle them and their hood falls, revealing a face disfigured by burns. He struggles to break free and mutters something about not being able to die yet before you can hear him say "Just let me finish first, you can do whatever you want with me afterwards, alright?" You...

You look at the man and say "Look, first, tell me why exactly you need to kill these men in fires. What is your motive" The man looks at you, seemingly surprised, before saying "Alright then, if you're willing to listen I'll tell you." He then goes on for nearly an hour, telling you the story that the woman from before told, but in more detail. He also explains that the initial fire was so that he could figure out who else was in on it.
After 10 years he figured out that the mayor couldn't have been the only one to commit the crime and that it almost certainly wasn't the only time he'd done something like that. The man spent a long time trying to find some sort of proof to get the mayor and his associates arrested, but was unable to find anything. Lacking the ability to get the mayor arrested or to find out who else helped the mayor, he came up with another plan. He would openly kill the mayor in a fire like the one that killed his wife and then see who fled. Apparently the small firestarter in the woods was a distraction so that he could start a fire in the other direction and then make his way to Blue Ridge City without being tracked.
Having heard his story, you...
>Let him kill the merchant before capturing him. If the crimes can't be proven then he may as well finish this himself.
>Suggest that you try investigating again, even if it may seem futile. If his innocence can be proven then he should only get fined for property damage since he didn't kill anyone who wasn't involved. His student only hired a few people to stake out a building, so she should only get a slap on the wrist. As for his master, all he did was teach the man. He'll be fine.
>Tell him that you believe him but that you have to finish your job. You suggest finding a wanted criminal with the same level of cultivation, killing them, and then substituting their head for his since there's no proof on what he looks like. He can then kill the merchant and go into hiding while you take the substitute head in for the reward. Your superiors won't care enough to look too deeply into it and should just let it pass as long as the arsons stop and the head comes back as that of someone who can gather Qi.

That's probably the cut of the profit that he puts into his personal account instead of reinvesting into the store. It seems rather large. It's mainly just monthly payments back to the merchant and purchases of various products. By the time you're finished looking through the shops it's night. The account books merely say that the payments are being sent back to his "main bank account". You don't find it particularly odd that he's sending money back to himself, he's leaving the stores enough left to still grow slightly and experiment with different products (which he leaves mostly up to the managers from what you can tell) and the money he takes back is presumably invested into other ventures or used to indulge in whatever hobbies he may have. Or maybe he's saving it as a back up fund or an inheritance.

You figure that the merchant may be keeping his secrets in the city, where they'd be closest at hand, and make your way to the house under the cover of night. You wear some rather generic clothes and have a piece of cloth cover your face. Nobody should recognize you even if you're spotted after breaking in.
You enter the building and notice once again that it really is well decorated. You're not sure if all merchants have homes like this or if he's the odd one out. As you begin to look around the bottom floor you see that it's mainly just normal rooms and go through it quickly. Eventually, on the top floor, you find his study. Various books are scattered about and you see a few maps pinned up the wall for decoration.
At this point, however, you hear a voice come from down the hall. It seems angry and it says "Godammit Lu Ning, you're not supposed to go into the master's study while he's away. Get out of there now or you'll have to warm more than just his bed when he comes back." You...

You wait for the voice to come closer, hearing it say "Lu Ning? You're not going to get out of this by pretending you're not there, come on." before you see a man in his late 20s dressed in a black suit walk through the study door. You quickly knock him out and drag him to the side before closing the study door and examining the room in more detail.
You see that the books cover a variety of subjects, but most of them look almost pristine. They probably haven't been read much. You look at the maps and see that they aren't really used either and that they're simply decorative. You go over to the desk and go to yank open the drawers, but find that they're locked. So you pull them open anyways, damaging the desk in the process. You've already knocked somebody out, so it doesn't really matter.
Inside the desk you find various supplies that one needs in their study as well as several account books and journals. You look through the account books and see they track the expenses for things such as travelling, furniture, living expenses, outside investments, and lump sums that are dumped into his own stores.
As you look through the books you do see some expenses that are simply marked things like "Entertainment - 50 coins" with the recipient listed as the mayor. You also see things such as "Entertainment supplies" a couple of times with numbers next to them. Maybe they correspond to their location in storage or something, you're not sure. For the time being you jot them down.
You then begin flipping through the merchant's journals. For the most part they just talk about his family, investments, who he dislikes, current events, and so on and so forth, but you do see several mentions of "visiting the mayor to have fun". These dates match up with the dates he made payments to the mayor.
You flip through to find the date Hu Qiang's wife was killed in the journal. Eventually you do find an entry dated a few days earlier which mentions the mayor making a mistake while setting up the next round of entertainment. It mentions that the merchant would help deal with the problem and that the mayor owed him one.
This... it doesn't look like anything on the surface, but with the context you have now it makes you shudder a bit. This could be enough evidence, although you suppose you could search for more. Or maybe now that you've made it look like a break-in you should steal some stuff just to cover your tracks. You...
>Leave, this should be enough proof.

>Rob the place and leave, they'll just think it was a thief.

You grab whatever looks important from the room before heading to the pantry and grabbing a couple of cloth sacks that were used to store vegetables. You can't really find any rope, but you are able to tear a couple of pieces of fabric from the study's curtains and use them as a makeshift rope. After that you gag the man and put a cloth bag over his head. He should be fine as long as somebody finds him the morning.
After that you begin going through the house and throwing some valuables in the bags while you search. Eventually you make your way to the basement and focus on there. You do check the boxes and find a few numbers written on them, but none of them match up with the ones in the account books. You break them open and don't find anything peculiar, mostly furniture or art. Then you leave for the night and go back to your home.
The next day you're contacted by the merchant who tells you about a break-in at one of his properties. You...

You tell the merchant that the break in was probably the arsonist trying to find him and suggest that the arsonist may be getting impatient. The merchant seems to get nervous and says "Really?" and you see him begin pacing around, now worried. He then dismisses you. As you leave you hear him mutter something about needing more security.
After your meeting with the merchant you head to the house you broke into the night before to pretend to look for traces of the arsonist. You look very hard and...
>Say that you didn't find anything, it's not like he was actually there.

You pour some lamp oil on the ground of the study and decide to use that as your 'evidence' that the arsonist was here. By the time the merchant can get someone to doublecheck the oil should be soaked in and they won't be able to tell that it was poured after last night.
After that you go to Gu Xinyi's estate and meet with him. You ask him whether you can try to forge a Qi Pill again since you've solidified your foundation, and he seems slightly confused. He looks at you for a moment and says "This... it's fine if you say you've solidified your foundation a bit more, but... You tell Gu Xinyi that you don't practice any sort of special cultivation technique and he seems confused. He says "Hm, well, that's odd. I suppose you might have some sort of special constitution, although that seems far less likely then your foundation just not being strong enough yet. I suppose we'll see in the future. Anyways, I'll have someone prepare the ingredients, you can have another try at forging the pill. It'll probably take at least ten tries to do so successfully though. It took me thirteen back in the day until I got my first success."
The butler gathers the ingredients, knowing enough to identify them, and after Gu Xinyi doublechecks his work you begin.
You exert yourself over the next thirty minutes or so as you attempt to forge a Qi Pill. After throwing in many herbs with precise timing, controlling the fire carefully, and stirring as optimally as you can, you don't succeed. What's left at the end is a bunch of blackish goop in a cauldron. Gu Xinyi does say that you've gotten a bit closer though, and says that you should try again after you've had about a week to reflect over your mistakes in this forging. You spend the next hour with him pointing out various flaws and him demonstrating how to properly do whatever you messed up.
At this point it has been a couple of hours and it's beginning to get dark. You...

You make your way to the area outside the city to find a large stone home with well-maintained gardens outside of it. You slowly make your way to the front door and give it a tenative tug to find that it's unlocked.
You enter the manor, confused and internally wondering if it might be a trap, but nothing odd happens. You look around and search to find that not a single servant is inside. You're sure he must have people assigned here, so you guess they're just slacking off.
After scouring the house you determine that there isn't any evidence here, and none of the boxes downstairs have the same numbers on the side as the one's from the journal you found before.
Just as you're about to leave, however, you trip over something in the dark and accidentally knock down a painting. Oddly enough the painting took a lot of force to knock down. You grab the painting, preparing to hang it back up, but then see something odd. Instead of a normal wall, the space where the painting was hanging was covering a large, metal wall safe. It operates by a combination lock and you have no idea what the combination could be. You...

You can cover the safe back up with the painting, so as long as you get rid of the door you just tore off of it they shouldn't suspect that anybody broke in. That means you don't have to take anything, but you both want money and are curious what this green powder is. You...

You return to the city, stopping to put the green powder away in your home before heading over to the shop, jumping from rooftop to rooftop past mostly empty streets.
As you approach the shop you stop for a moment and look around. Just before you're about to decide to go inside, you faintly detect the qi of someone else in the Qi Emission Stage. Detecting someone else's qi is something that rarely happens for you since you can't sense the cultivation of someone past the Qi Emission Stage, and also you can't sense someone's cultivation if they haven't reached it yet.
You stay put for a few minutes and feel that the energy, just like you, is staying where it is. You can't tell its exact location, but you can tell that it's nearby and that whoever is giving it off should be awake. You're not sure how you know that they're awake, it's just some innate difference between someone conscious giving off qi and someone unconscious giving off qi that cultivators can discern. You...

You weave through the city's streets until you reach the trail up to the shrine again. The trail is busier than last time you visited, and you see people chatting on the sides of it and a few children playing in the blue lilies covering the mountainside.
As you near the shrine you see that the lanterns from before aren't up, and you supposes that's something that people can only see at night. The shrine is more crowded then before, but it isn't that much of a crowd, which you suppose is lucky for you but a shame for the warrior the shrine was made in honor of. You approach the shrine, wondering if you'll see something different now that you can supposedly see spirits, and as you focus all you see is a vague, red glow surrounding the shrine. It's indistinct and just lightly envelops the shrine. You wonder if all spirits and ghosts are like this, or if it's simply because the man the shrine is made after has been dead for thousands of years. You did feel something around 3 AM the last time you came here, so maybe it's more distinct at that time of night.
Now that you've checked the shrine out, you don't really have much to do for now. You...

You then ask him if any of the other Apprentice Apothecaries would be free, or possibly Qian Yang, and he says that he thinks a couple of the Apprentice Apothecaries will be free, and that you probably shouldn't invite Qian Yang since he becomes more irritating the longer you talk to him. You're slightly surprised but get the point and leave it to Yu Zhen to invite the other couple of people.
A little over an hour later you're being led into a very clean and respectable looking bar. Since it's the afternoon it's not too crowded, although it's still busy enough. Yu Zhen leads your group of four to a booth in the back corner. As he leads you there he says to you "This may seem like it's just a bar, but it's actually The Flowing Boar, a rather respectable place to meet and relax among the talents of Blue Ridge City. It's not very popular among those old monsters who rule the city, but among people under 50 or 60 it's a nice place to just relax and make good friends with others of your standing."
As you're shown the menu you pick out a dish of fish and rice with a side of grilled vegetables, being told that it's one of their signature dishes. You begin talking among yourselves and it's not long before Yu Zhen begins pointing out various figures sitting in the bar. "You see that young man dressed in red by the counter, yes? He's Qiao Lim, an apprentice of a 1-star Tea Specialist who lives in the capital. It's not an occupation as well-respected as being an apothecary or blacksmith, but don't underestimate them just because it just seems unimportant. Tea brewed by a master can help soothe a cultivator's state of mind and assist them in developing their qi. The occupation is unusually popular in the Zhaotian Kingdom so there's a location for their guild in the capital. That couple in the corner are rather important too. They're both Apprentice Painters. They're the foremost experts on painting in Blue Ridge City, and it's said that their expertise within the kingdom pales only in comparison to the 1-star Painter Ren Guanyu who lives in the capital." Yu Zhen then points out several other figures throughout the bar, ranging from talented fighters who may be able to enter the Royal Tournament to various sons and daughters of merchants. You...

You invite Qiao Lim over to your table, introducing yourself as a student of Gu Xinyi, and offer him a drink out of courtesy. He obliges and begins talking with the four of you, discussing various pieces of gossip with all of you. He seems to know one of the people at the table already, and he's pretty amiable, so it isn't much trouble to get along with him.
As you near the end of your meal you ask Qiao Lim if he has any recommendations for types of tea to help nurture your qi. He ponders for a moment and says "Well, that honestly depends on a lot of factors. Various teas have different properties, and on top of that the brewing of the tea is very important. Unless one is properly trained you won't be able to properly bring out the essence of the tea, leading to the effects being cut drastically. If a suitable occasion comes maybe I'll brew a pot for everyone."
You then finish your meal, your stomach full and your mood merry, and make your way out of The Flowing Boar. After that you go back to staking out the merchant's shop if only to keep up appearances. As night approaches you sense a cultivator of the Qi Emission Stage approaching, the same as you. It seems similar to last night, so you assume it's the same person, although you're not well-trained enough to discern between different people's qi well. You stake the place out for the night and nothing in particular happens. You can sense the qi leaving at almost the exact same time as last night, so you suppose they're working set hours.
You go home and get some rest before waking back up around 10 or 11 in the morning. You still have about a week until the arsonist is done checking all of the properties around the county, so you suppose you'll just have to treat it as off time until then. You...

You decide to sell the goods you have sitting in your home from the bandit camp, and begin asking around for a place to sell them all off at once. You eventually hear of a shop that's supposedly willing to purchase all sorts of goods and make your way there. It's in a decent part of town but the building doesn't look well-maintained, and it's very large compared to the surrounding ones.
You enter and find that massive amounts of goods are scattered throughout the store. The cheaper items are simply gathered in piles, while display case house more expensive looking things. It takes you a moment to find the shopkeeper in the mess. You tell him you have goods you'd like to sell and he rubs his hands together before saying "Alright, show me to them and I'll appraise them." You show him to the cart of goods you have outside and his eyes widen, clearly surprised to see such a large amount at once. He then says "This... give me a moment. I need to appraise them piece by piece." You tell him to go ahead and he begins.
About 90 minutes later he's done, and he tells you that he can give you 300 gold pieces for everything. He does admit that this is less than the full value of the goods, but given the costs for storage and the effort spent reselling them, it's reasonable. He says that he can also offer you 450 gold coins in credit at their store. Well... they do have a lot of stuff lying around, so it's not like you'd be lacking selection. You...

You ask if you can look around before deciding and the shopkeeper says "Certainly, certainly, go ahead." before you begin looking around the shop.
Through the various mounds of items you find quite a few interesting things. There's enough furniture in here to make your home seem more... filled out for around 150 gold coins in store credit. There are also quite a few books, most of them for less than a gold each, and the thought of filling up your bookshelves come to mind. A few of the books are more valuable, however, and are either rare editions, long out of print classics, or techniques on battle or cultivation. You find that all of the "cultivation techniques" only cover the Qi Emission Stage and lower for the most part, and they all look sort of... shady. They're still exorbitant priced though, and so you just put them aside for the time being.
The battle techniques are more reasonable in price, although you're unsure of the quality. The cheapest start at about 30 gold and they only go up from there. There's one marked "Tips and Tricks for Inexperienced Cultivators" that seems to go over not just one technique, but a bunch of miscellaneous things that a new cultivator might not know about. It's priced at 100 gold coins and seems old, but looking in the front you see that it has been printed, many, many times. This is clearly a classic, which is odd for anything relating to cultivation. I'm simply going to apologize for being a shitter who couldn't take the quest to the end and at the same time say that I enjoyed running and I hope you guys enjoyed the quest as well. If I could continue running I really could, but it just became apparent just how fucked I am timewise. If I knew this was going to happen when I started running I would've waited a year or two for things to die down before starting.

This sucks, but RL is more important.
Hope things go well for you.

Man that sucks I really had started to like this quest. But good things don't last I guess. Best of luck to you and I hope you can pick up this quest again in the future. Thanks!

Awe fuck. I just got all caught up.

Well thank you for having the courtesy of informing us at least. Thanks for running.

i'd run it during breaks from uni and try doing a session once every week or two if I have free time, but I feel like that is just going to end in the quest dying due to inactivity
I would like to run a couple of 1/2 thread quests during Summer though if I don't get an internship or something
maybe if I have more free time in a year or two, I still like this concept a lot and didn't get to take it anywhere near the end

You could set the quest to run once a day every 1 or 2 weeks I think that would be fine with everyone.

You could also maybe switch the quest over to fiction.live to have a better control over it.

>session once every week or two
>dying due to inactivity
Once a 2 weeks seems quite alive. Much better than some quest get

I mean, if there's still in interest even if I'd only be running once every week or two then I'd like to continue running. I figured you had to either update at least a few times a day at the very least or run a few sessions a week to stay alive on /qst/ given the small playerbase. Sorry for the doomsaying I suppose. I'll start a new thread on the 13th if you guys are still interested. I'll post in /qtg/ and on https://twitter.com/QmWalrus beforehand since people have probably stopped checking the thread because I hadn't planned on continuing.

Our timings don't match that well but I'll surely participate if you plan to continue.
