Greetings, jewels; and welcome back to Magical Girl for Hire! After getting back from a job in which we’d been a servant of sorts for helping a summoner kid get through his final exam, we’re back and just handling a bit of busywork in the Intersection. In particular, figuring out this strange ring...which turns out to have held some strange fellow who’s name is Garotoum- a mass of dark smoke and now in the form of some sort of spider-centaur.

Strange enough to immediately ask it a few questions, at least. “I wasn’t, but I AM the one that asked them to do it, and obviously I’m the one that called you out. So, just what can you do? What’s with the whole situation with the imprisonment in a ring?”

“Oh!” He affects a hand to his forehead in oh-so-dramatic fashion. “It’s just TERRIBLE! I was minding my own business doing shadow mage things and suddenly some folks get uppity and lock me in that little trinket! How UTTERLY barbaric, don’t you think?”

And you DO mean ‘strange’.

“Whaddya mean ‘shadow mage things?’ Lorelei asks, eyebrow raised.

“Well, it IS what I do!” He snarks. “The shadows are a guy’s best friend, dontcha know! Easy to sneak around in, maybe cause a little mayhem...That sorta thing! To, y’know, scare the beetles outta the populace, making a fearsome kingdom of shadow- look, just watch! I can set ‘em up!” He raises a hand, and suddenly a large, spiral spike comes out of the ground. “I can knock ‘em down!” It fades, and there’s a pitch-black knife in his hands. “I can make folks go allll-around!” At that, the puddle beneath him suddenly coalesces slightly, then expands- right before pairs of shadowy arms grasp the three of you…

And with a vicious tug, the three of you immediately snap their grips and draw weapons.

The grin on his face drops- although instead of fear, it’s curiosity. “...Huh. THAT doesn’t usually happen.” He rotates in place, setting eyes on all three of you. “Those grabby hands aren’t exactly ribbons, y’know? You three broke ‘em pretty easy...so I’m guessing you’re some kinda archmages?”

“No, you’re just REALLY far away from home, dude,” Lorelei snarks.

His eyes widen. “Oh? That so? I THOUGHT something was strange about the vibe...so how far?”

“Pretty far.” Izumi wryly notes. “One might say dimensionally displaced.”

“...Neat!” is his own response. “So I get a whole new world to slip around?”

“And more, likely,” you admit. “So, what, exactly, where you just trying to do?”

“Oh, nothing heinous!” he insists. “Like I’d do that to the people that let me get a breath of fresh air in ages! That was just me tryin’ to show off my shadowporting! If there’s a shadow, I can slip in and out of it, y’see! Bring folks from one to the other if they’re connected, even! Anywhere there’s shadow or my own smoke! In addition to my little arts and crafts I tend to pull out, no less… but hoo boy! Let me tell you, folks back there didn’t seem to like my fun! Party poopers- I hate ‘em, y’know?”

“Are you even bound to that ring anymore?” Izumi asks, cautiously.

At that, he sighs. “Ayup. I can still feel it tugging at me. Hell, I’m already starting to feel winded, even! Such a terrible shame- I used to be capable of soooooo much more than this. But methinks they didn’t want my fun anymore.” He shrugs cheekily. “So I’m more than happy to take what I can get- even if it means I gotta follow orders. At least it’ll be from cute lasses like you!” Huh. Well, you hadn’t asked if he was forced to listen, but it seems that’s the case. Good to know.

“Well, good to know you’re willing to listen to us,” Lorelei mutters. “Frankly, I could see how your shadow junk could be real useful…”

“As long as you don’t go rogue, I suppose… “ Izumi mutters.

“Well, we’ll go over it later,” you decide. Whatever you’re going to do with this guy, it can wait for now. “You can go take a nap, Gartoum. We’ll call you back later.”

“Aw, you’re too kind! It’s true that it seems like it’s taking a lot out of me to manifest even now...such a shame,” He laments as he bows, and like a vacuum suddenly started, all of the dark smoke is sucked back into the ring on your finger, and after a few seconds, it’s like he was never there.

“Funky,” Lorelei opines. “Not like he’s the strangest guy I’ve met, but still.”

“I sensed an air of mischief around him more than malice, oddly enough,” Izumi admits. “Perhaps he’s more of a showman than a terror. Still...I’d be hesitant to trust him, even if he’s allegedly bound to us.”

“Makes sense, but that doesn’t mean that we can figure out a way to make use of his skills,” you figure. “We’ll talk about it more later. In the meantime…”

You turn to your blonde friend. “How do you think the bots are taking to the place, Lori? Anything they need or want help with?” Prima seemed to be adapting well enough, but you never knew for certain without asking. And Jago, you just plain haven’t see much of yet.

“Oh, those two? I think they’re doing mostly okay,” Lorelei says, putting a finger to her lips in thought. “I HAVE noticed that they seem to be unsure of a lot of things, but I think that’s just them having to add so much new knowledge to their databases. That and erasing stuff that’s clearly not valid anymore. They’re constantly wondering about how things work now. Prima’s been getting into dancing, like you saw, but Jago...not sure about him.” She frowns. “Oddly enough, he’s been disappearing on me from time to time. Always shows back up, but never wants to tell me where he’s been. Just that he’s been ‘out an’ about’, in his words.”

“You don’t think he’s getting up to anything sordid, do you?” Izumi asks.

She shakes her head. “Well, he doesn’t look guilty or bashful or anything- in fact he looks pretty happy. He just he doesn’t want to talk about it for whatever reason. Still can’t help but be curious, though.” ..although come to think of it, Prima’s...well, she’s been asking a few questions, lately. Not sure how to answer ‘em.”

“Questions like…?” Izumi prompts.

“Questions like what the history of robotics is here, common standards and practices for construction and all that; even got a question about anti-virus software,” she finishes. “I just point her to the library whenever she keeps asking, but she constantly complains that she never finds what she’s looking for- not that she TELLS me what she’s looking for,” Lori grumbles. “I’m wondering if she’s worried about repairs, but it seems like she’s gotten self-conscious about it. Honestly, now that you’ve brought it up, I remember I’d been meaning to ask you…”

>Sure, we’ll find a place and all go. We’d need to find Prima first, though…

You nod- keeping them in good condition was something that had been at the back of your mind as well, if you’re being honest. No reason to not assuage that concern now that she’s bringing it up. “Sure, I’ll try to look up a place and we can all go. That okay, Izumi?” You look to her, but she just makes a quick sound of agreement. “Right, then. We’ll need to find Prima first, though…”

“Shouldn’t be too hard!” Lorelei claims easily. “I at least know where she heads sometimes. Wouldn’t be surprised if she was at one of her usual haunts…”

As it happens, Lorelei is pretty correct; after a quick check around HQ, which she wasn’t, it was only a few minutes later that you find her looking outside at some store window a few blocks away from the dance hall that, according to Lorelei, her and Mono tended to head to. Lorelei’s quick to call out to her, and she nearly jumps at the surprise of it. “Oh! Miss Lorelei! I wasn’t expecting you. Or Miss Miranda or Miss Izumi, either!”

“Yeah, we were kinda lookin’ for you!” Lorelei explains. “We were doing some stuff, then we kinda landed on the topic of how you’ve been askin’ me about things.” At first, an alarmed look comes over Prima, but Lorelei keeps talking. “So, we figured that we’d help you out.”

“H-huh? How?” Prima asks, owlishly. “Did you perhaps locate where I might be able to discover-”

“You’re worried about keeping yourself maintained, right?” you cut in. The response to that is Prima jolting slightly, and looking at you wide-eyed. “I’ll take that as a yes. First, relax, because you’re not exactly alone. Second is proof of that- I managed to look up what’s basically a sentient robot support group in town. It’s not the biggest, but it’s there. I’m pretty sure they can help you out in terms of advice better than we could.”

If possible her eyes get even wider. “Ah...I see. Could we perhaps go there now?”

“Entire reason we looked around for you!” Lorelei crows. “Come on, let’s get going!”

There’s a tinny, robotic squee from the bot as she practically skips to your side. “Right, then,” you refocus, checking your FutureSight. “It’s just called the Advanced Robotic Intelligence Support Union. Their headquarters is...a bit of a ways away. Let’s find a bus.”

(cont)
>>
>>3149683
It’s about a half-hour later when you finally reach their headquarters- a simple, slate grey block of a building on a street corner, surrounded by a few yards of foliage all around. There seems to be various clusters of greenery, and you can see a number of individuals milling about that, well...most look human, or at least, humanoid. The vast majority have smaller details about them that betray their robotic nature- ear decals coming OUT of the ear, for example, or a small pair of antennae. There’s only about two or three clearly robotic individuals- and there’s maybe two dozen individuals out here. Could be more inside, true, but…

“Well...here we are,” Lorelei says mildly. Almost immediately a number of heads turn to regard the four of your. “Let’s see what we’ve got here.”

As the four of you walk onto the grounds, you’re quickly greeted by a young lady in a red, form fitting dress- something like an undersuit, really, but you’re not sure why someone would just be wearing that around… “Hello there! Welcome to the Advanced Robotic Intelligence Support Union! I’m guessing your friend there is looking for a bit of help?” She points down at Prima, who nods quickly.

“Ah- yes! I suppose I had a few concerns regarding database updates…” she says lightly.

“And we wanted to know about what could she do about repairs and maintenance, considering her line of work,” you finish.”

“Oh, of course! Ah, but excuse me, I forgot to introduce myself!” She holds out a hand, which the four of you shake readily. “My name is Vena. A pleasure!” You introduce yourselves in kind, and she quickly leads you all into the building. To your surprise, it’s inside more resembles a comfortable, antique, multistory house rather than anything sterile and exact. There’s carpeting, lamps, the whole place has a gentle, amber glow to it...not bad at all, really.

You’re brought to a sitting room- on the far wall is a large couch, and there’s several in a circle that you imagine is for some sort of meeting or event. It’s one of these that Vena sits down on, and bids you do the same, especially to a clearly nervous Prima. “So! Where should we start? Do you want to ask me any questions first, or…?”

> “Wait, don’t you need to, I don’t know, do some sort of diagnostics on her or something first? Shouldn’t we been in a repair bay or something?”

“Actually, yeah,” you start. Might as well ask the elephant in the room. “Why aren’t there more of you around?” A flash of worry crosses her face as you continue on to elaborate. “There’s more sentient robots in The Intersection than this, right?”

You weren’t exactly paying attention to everyone new who showed up, but you know for a fact you’ve seen android and robot types walking about here and there. Heck, there’s that whole wing in the Care House specifically for folks of that nature. And yet there’s only some two dozen here?” It didn’t make sense, and as you see Izumi and Lorelei furrow their brows in consideration, you realize that their thoughts might be along the same lines.

Vena, for her part, looks distressed only momentarily, and a smile is back before you can call her on it. “Of course there are! However, many of them likely come to the conclusion that our assistance isn’t needed, or perhaps they may feel concern at coming to us with such an issue- much like your own Prima! But I assure you, our services are completely worth the time!”

Hmm. You turn to Prima herself, who looks at you with a very slight squint in her eyes. They flicker back and forth between you and Vena twice, before lowering her head in thought. “The odds of such low attendance given my population estimates are...low. But not impossible,” Prima says in a quiet voice.

“And such is the case here,” Vena says directly. Hm.

“Moving on, then,” you decide. You’ll table the issue for now. “I guess...just maybe start off with whatever can make sure she keeps working. That’s the major thing.”

Vena claps her hands once, a smile beaming on her now. “Naturally! Fortunately for you, the Intersection has a few one-size-fits-all solutions for several of your needs, and a few one-size-fits-most for all the others. Now, if you’re just worried about structural maintenance and integrity, I’ve just the thing for you, most likely. A nano-fluid that requires a series of applications- in order to map out your ‘base’ schematics, of course, the data of which will be transferred to a bank where you can, whenever necessary, withdraw that data in the form of reconstructive fluid comprised of picobots that will reconstruct whichever parts of you may either be missing or worn down.”

That DOES sound useful… “What’s the catch?”

Vena chuckles a bit. “True, I should mention that this isn’t a charity service, I’m afraid. Nature of where we are, of course…” Of course. “But the primary providers of the fluid have a deal with A.R.I.S.U and we can get it for you at a reduced price of 11 Large Motes! Provided you’re a member, that is.”

...And that’s probably why there aren’t a lot of them.

(cont.)
>>
>>3152159
“That seems...exorbitant,” Prima mutters. “Perhaps I can make due myself…”

“You wouldn’t be the first to presume so,” Vena speaks up. “But I’ve known a number of androids who’ve thought so as well, only to get critically injured and have no real way of healing their unique functions without assistance our group brings. It pays for itself in the long run, I promise you! Currently, membership is 10 Large Motes per monthly cycle!”

>that can be repaired by a fucking kid
That's mostly by swapping out mass-produced components, though.

I mean, for the service being offered, the price seems reasonable.
The question is if that service is necessary for monthly maintenance.
Like, 11 Lotes to repair mission-kill levels of critical damage seems very fair, but just for regular dings and scratches is exorbitant; especially with the monthly fee.

“At least tell me there’s other perks, Vena. Emotional support groups, recommended custom part shops, anything like that?"

Vena giggles slightly. “Oh, don’t worry, we come highly recommended by all of our current and former members! And yes, we offer both of those here, in addition to work placement services, and community outreach- we have partnership with several parts stores, repair services, and most importantly, independent contractors that allow us to receive the benefit of cheaper prices!”

Well. That’s something, you suppose.

“If I may,” Izumi speaks up suddenly. “I must ask- considering the number of individuals out there, is there any sort of event going on today?”

“Hm? Oh, no,” she shakes her head. “We also offer temporary and longer-term housing. Many of our members find our housing accomodations much more affordable than independent living, and they largely live ‘on site’, as it were!”

“I see,” she considers. “Are you all doing anything in particular today? Some sort of gathering event or the like?”

“No, I cannot say so,” she admits.

An eyebrow lifts. “Then...pardon if I may be so crass- but why are they not working at the moment? You DID say you provided those services. And you also inferred earlier that this was the majority- if not all- of your members. Perhaps they have their own business arrangements?”

“Some do, while others work in more flexible positions,” she says, her tone formal, yet still attempting to be pleasant. “Any other questions?”

You look to Prima, who’s eying Vena oddly. Lorelei has a similar look on her face, but you can’t exactly tell what. You’re not sure if it’s suspicion, bafflement, or what.

There’s a couple too many red flags going off in your head at the moment- although you don’t think they’re outright cheating bots (as it’s unlikely even to you that such antics would survive very long here), there IS something fishy about them. “Alright, then. I think we’ll be in touch in regards to further possibilities.” As you stand up, Vena’s smile drops a fraction- but still enough to notice. Still, she says nothing as she accepts an outstretched hand. “Thanks for the tip and your time.”

“It’s no problem! Come back if you need any more concerns alleviated!” She notably doesn’t walk you out of the building. The droids and bots that seem to be busy talking hardly notice you, although a couple at least glance your way as you leave the building.

“Well, that was weird,” Lorelei opines as you all leave the property. “On its face, felt like everything was on the up and up, but for some reason…”

“Just gives you a bad feeling, huh?” Izumi finishes. “I have to admit similar feelings.” She looks to the little bot, who’s head is hanging low. “What did you think?”

“It’s...disappointing,” Prima admits. “I detected slight irregularities in her vocal patterns and I believe she was also sending out some sort of data signal or transfer...though it stopped not long before your last question.”

Izumi frowns, as do you. “Data signal, then? Wonder what for?”

Lorelei sighs. “The real question is, ‘Does it even matter?’ After all, it was just something we were looking into, and I seriously doubt that anyone doing business here is fool enough to try and hard con someone. Might just be sticker shock, honestly.”

Well, it WAS pricey.

I doubt it's some massive conspiracy, but I'm curious and both of them will still need parts and such. If we can't find a proper group though, both of them were built to be modular and moddable combat bots, so they shouldn't be too hard to work on.

“Could be…” you allow as your thoughts percolate. “...but I dunno, I’m wondering what they aren’t saying, now.”

“Well, technically they aren’t saying anything, they’re just thinking it really loudly,” Lorelei snarks.

“...At any rate, anyone want to try asking around a bit?” you ask, ignoring the barb.

While Prima and Izumi look curious, Lorelei looks indifferent...although she shrugs her shoulders after a second or two. “Fine. Got nothin’ else to do today, and we’re still waiting for what’s-her-name to get out of training.” Ah, that is true...well, if nothing else, you’ve got some options- although you get the feeling that some might take longer to look into than others.

“Man, you’re really getting a soft spot for this place, aren’t ya?” Lorelei jokes as you all pull up to the Care House again. You level a slight glare at her, which she seems to utterly ignore as she grins. Izumi has a similar look on her face, but doesn’t say anything. Bah. Bah to the both of them. Turning around and resolving to ignore them, you march up the steps and into the building with no fanfare.

“Oh, hello!” Yup, she’s still there. “We hadn’t called you, but if you’re here to see your little shadows, then by all means we can call them down for you in a few moments…”

“Actually, we’re here for a different reason,” you admit, to her visual surprise. “We’re wondering if we might not be able to talk to any of the staff or maybe some kids in the Artificial Intelligences section? Just wanted to ask them a few things.”

She raises an eyebrow at that, but her tone is practiced and formal. “Is this a formal Outgoer investigation? If so, I’ll need to see your license, and you’ll be permitted to ask as much as needed; but otherwise I’ll have to ask you to sign and state the reason for your visit on this visitor sheet, and you’ll need to take this-” and here she pulls out a small buzzer-like device. “-which will buzz when your visitation time limit is about to run out.”

Lorelei quickly leans in. “Wait, we can pull rank like that?” she whispers. You didn’t know, either- never had a reason to. Leaning out, she asks openly, “What’s the normal time limit?”

“A half-hour.” Ah. Well, that wouldn’t be a lot of time…

Well well. Let's see what we uncover.

My guess is that Outgoers have accrued various soft powers over time as a result of the value of their work to the Intersection as a whole, rather than anything intrinsic to the job. Bah, you’ll just have to deal with the short time frame. Call it an training exercise. “We’ll sign.” The other two shrug, and put on their names, all four of you listing ‘interviews’ as your reason for being there at Lorelei’s example. You’re not sure if it’s the best thing to say, but it’s not like you’re exactly wrong. You’re all handed buzzers, and you quickly make your way up towards Machina Hall.

“Hopefully this won’t take that long,” you voice. “Considering the number of kids here, I’m pretty sure at least a few of them have heard something about that group…”

As you step out the elevator, you’re met by the sterile silver and white of Machine hall, already showing just what it’s focus is as a pair of mechanical scorpoinoid beings patrol the hallways. Down further, which is where your goal is, is the Central Hub, the general hangout for the kids that go up here. Prima’s eyes widen as she takes in the numerous straight lines, the variously designed kids at several public charging ports, others doing rapidfire motions with their hands entwined that occasionally seems to result in one cheering in some kind of game.

There’s also a couple of larger ones who are wearing the pins of the Care House on top of mandated uniform coloring, signifying them as employees. It’s one of them that notices you first, and moves towards you- he’s a large fellow, barrel chested (not actually made from a barrel), and he seems entirely robotic...at least, judging by his wide, yet segmented smile and dome-shaped head. Also the lack of lower-body, as he’s held up by anti-gravity forces, it seems. “Greetings, visitors! I’m Guardian Tomas!” Yikes, this guy’s voice. Loud and deep. “And may I ask what brings you to the Machina Hall today?”

“Well, honestly, we were hoping to ask some questions for the sake of one of our own, actually,” you say, motioning to Prima, who’s still taking everything in. “She’s a recent transplant, and we were hoping to figure out what we could do if she got injured. We were looking into a group called the Advanced Robotic Intelligence Support Union. We talked to them, but we were hoping for some extra opinions.”

“Ahhh! An intriguing query, and one I have knowledge about, fortunately! For I was requested to join their organization as well!” he boasts. Wow, that IS fortunate.

“Really?” Lorelei speaks up. “Well, it’d be great if you could let us know what you think of them.”

“Of course!” He bobs slightly- his attempt at a nod? “They are not worthwhile, in my opinion! Their prices are far too steep! There are also nasty rumors- although only rumors- that they are in cahoots with certain other parties to drive up prices to all non-affiliated androids to enormous degrees regardless of supply.”

(cont.)
>>
>>3154416
Lorelei flinches at that, and Izumi settles a deep frown. “Yikes. That sounds bad.”

“Quite, but there is little proof of such collusion! Merely tales from disgruntled shoppers, from what I’m aware of!” he warns. “There are also worse rumors. However, it wouldn’t behoove me to mention such in front of such delicate audio receptors…” he motions to the kids nearby. “If you wish to further question, perhaps I can direct you to a more private individual…”

“By all means,” you agree.

------------

A few minutes later, you’re in the office of a fellow called ‘Agent Twenty-Five’ by Tomas. A large, chimeral-style beast with a vague similarity to the hallway patrollers. Asking the same question, you get some slanted eyes. “I’ve warned students to avoid them, personally.” His voice is quieter, and almost raspy. “By my investigation, they like to incur various hidden fees for their services beyond the norm. Whether it’s ‘extraneous information gathering’, ‘additional freelance emotional support’ and other such nonsense. They seem to try and find every trick in the book to get more out of you.”

“Oh, dear…” Prima seems wide-eyed. “That seems rather counter-productive to their mission statement.”

He nods. “They don’t do it all the time, just here and there when they can get away with it. I should also mention, even though it’s just a rumor, that they often catalogue their members’ specifications so as to tempt them more with so-called ‘unique’ materials and services.” That seems...wow. That’s odd, really. But that’s also plenty reason to not go with them.

“So, gotta ask- how do you know all this?” You can’t help but find yourself curious. He seems like he knows a great deal of information about the group. They didn’t exactly strike you as nefarious, but they did seem secretive.

“I’m acquaintances with an individual who was formerly part of their group.” Ah, makes sense enough. “He left them quite some time ago when his fees were piling up to be too much. He risked expulsion from the Intersection.”

...yeah, that’d be a good reason. “Glad he didn’t get thrown out,” you offer. “But you wouldn't’ happen to know of any other Robotic/Cyborg support groups that don't have as much baggage as ARISU? As good as it is to know we dodged a trap, we're still a bit out of our league with helping our friend."

“I can say I do, actually,” and at that his tone brightens. “For that is what my friend proceeded to start up, himself. It does not carry the same influence as that group among store merchants, but amongst repairfolk, it is equal, and from what I’m aware, his reputation is all the greater amongst specialist individuals and certain entertainment businesses. Here- I have his contact information.” He reaches into his desk, and passes you what seems to be a small dataslate, but upon further inspection is a very stylized card with the name ‘N-SF23’, and beneath it ‘AI Allied Assistance’. “I should note, it’s not a unified organization like A.R.I.S.U. It’s more of a general collective of individuals helping each other out when they can. There are ‘benefits’, but only in the sense of friends helping like-minded individuals, and nothing is either promised or owed, to you, or them. It’s a volunteer effort, of sorts.”

“Well, thank you very much for this,” Izumi says, and you, Lorelei and Prima are quick to follow her example.

“It’s fine,” he reassures. “He’ll be glad that I told more individuals about him and his group.”

(cont.)
>>
>>3154626
With that, you take your leave, the buzzers returned, and as you step out, you take a look at the card itself. “Hm...according to this, there’s meetings every few cycles at some place called the ‘Gentle Spigot’. Makes sense with what he said.”

“May I have the card, then?” Prima asks. “I would like to visit, when there’s time.”

“Aw, you don’t want us with you?” Lorelei asks. To your surprise, it’s not as...cheeky as you thought she’d sound.

“Well, perhaps…” she concedes. “May I have some time to process the matter?”

“Sure,” she allows, and Izumi hands the card over. “So! That’s that. Now what the heck are we doing? Wanna go back and see if your athlete friend is done or what?”

“It’s been rather pleasant so far, actually,” Izumi says. “It’d be nice to transition into a proper day out.”

“I would be willing to accompany you all, if you’ll have me,” Prima confers. “However, if you don’t, I do have things to keep me occupied.”

“And by things, you mean popping and lockin’ with Mono,” Lorelei says amusedly.
Hm. Well, going all around has tired you out a bit. And considering what she’s likely been doing, a bar meetup may not be on her list of things to do after a heavy workout...but then again, it might just be. And it hasn’t exactly been a bad day so far...an interesting one, but not bad.

The night takes you all to having a multitude of locations as she regales you with her time in the company- a lot of complaining about office politics, but a lot of love there for her friends and getting to do what she loves. The final place of the night she takes you to is called the ‘Red Swallow’, and apparently it’s a favored watering hole of hers whenever she’s feeling down.
She even reveals that she’s a transplant by choice- although her reasoning hits rather close to home.

“I-I mean, while I was there? I was a fuckup. Like...a fuckup fuckup, y’know? Like...I was the kinda girl that- that people pitied. Like, all the time. Like, they didn’t HATE me or anything, they didn’t, but it was just like...like ‘aw, she’s trying’ and y’know? And I was tired of that. I was tired of that. Soooo fucking tired.” She takes another swig of whatever it is she’d gotten. You can’t even remember what YOU’D gotten, just that it tastes not bad. Lorelei is trying to poke at Prima for whatever reason- you think she’s trying to figure out how to get her drunk while Prima is politely yet firmly trying to keep her hands away from her chassis.

“Mhm…that’s so SAAAAD! ” Izumi, to your dulled surprise, isn’t holding back either, her over exaggerated emotions causing her to drape herself over Kane in an attempt at comfort that you just snort at.

“It sucked!” Kane continues. “So, so, so when the guy, fuck I forget his name, he was like ‘raaar you all fucked it up I got the gem now!’ I was like ‘well, time to not fuck up for once in my life!’ And so I grabbed at it and nearly burned my hand off. Cause I forgot people weren’t supposed to touch the thing, y’know? And then my guy comes along and yeah you can guess the rest.” Another swig. “I just...I wanted to not fuck up, y’know? And I guess now I get the chance to not fuck up. I’m doing better, though! At it, I mean.”

“Hm.” You nod, solemnly. “You know what we should do about that?”

“What?” Kane asks.

-------------------

The next time you wake up, you find yourself sprawled across a...hm.

Not entirely sure where this is. This is a bench you’re on, absolutely. A bit of green. Oh, that’s Izumi up there. That’s not a tree, though. More like a mass of metal in the shape of a tree. Where the hell IS everyone else? At least the hangover doesn’t seem that bad...but hell, you can’t remember a damn thing? You’re...in somewhere.

“Miss-miss-miss Miranda?” A fuzzy blob at the corner of your vision comes into focus...Prima? There’s something odd about her. “This is you, correct?” And suddenly she pokes you, square in the forehead. “...This is you, correct?” Another poke. “...This is you, correc-”

“STOP IT!” you yell- and then immediately regret it as your good fortune regarding your hangover immediately goes away. “Yeeessss...it’s me. Th’ hell do you want?”

(cont.)

Prima blinks once, slowly. Then turns away with all the gravitas of someone who’s just discovered an impossible truth. “...I yam uncertain.” ‘Yam?’ “My functions have been...tampered with. But have they? Or have they been enhanced?” One, two steps away from you, staring at nothing. “Is this merely an artificial state of mind, as I am artificial? Would that mean that all beings in some part are artificial? Perhaps artificiality itself is a state of mind...”

Okay, wait, no, no...Prima’s not normally like that. You don’t know her THAT well, no, but you’re pretty sure you know her well enough. “Hold on…” you manage to clamber up and off the bench- whatever time it is, it seems like the building might be closed? Or at least very devoid of visitors. “Why...are you all like this? You kneel down gently, and clasp Prima’s face in your hands, turning her gently. “Didn’t think robots could get drunk.”

“I am...also uncertain of that fact.” She says wistfully. “However, the one thing I am certain of...” and there she pauses.

“What?” you ask impatiently. “What are you certain of?”

“...is that I am uncertain about many things.” Oh for the love of- “Except the fact that Miss Lorelei had something to do with it.”

...of fucking course she did. “How do you know that?”

“My memory banks of the last few hours are...scrambled a bit. Ah, it’s like a puzzle. Is this what memories are like as well? Puzzle pieces, with the end goal being the picture of life? How curious…” She’s about to look off again- dangit.

*Slap* Izumi snorts as the sound of impact rings out, and jerks violently in the tin tree thing, muttering something harsh to your ears.

“Agh! For what reason did you do that?” Yeah, you’re asking yourself that, considering that slapping metal here isn’t the best of ideas. All you had, though. “Oh, yes. You wanted...yes, that. I believe...we found a specialty bar, if my visual records are accurate. Perhaps they are. But could they not be?” There’s a few moments of silence, and you’re about to slap her again, before she continues speaking. “Ah, yes! We are sitting. You all are...cheering. There is a thing. I remember a...plug. I think it was a plug. And a device? Perhaps to organic individuals it would be a straw? And a cup? Is everything merely names?” But then, she shakes herself off again. “Ah, no. I think my records are self-repairing, if slowly...perhaps if I try to access more the process would be faster? Although it still may take some time…well, less than if I didn’t focus on it, but yes.”

>Can’t just sit around and wait, and that answer’s good enough. Come on, help me get Izumi down.

Well, that sounds nice, but the fact that it’s self-fixing at all is what you’re concerned about. “Can’t just sit around and wait, and that answer’s good enough.” You’re already moving towards the big tree. “Come on, help me get Izumi down.” Goodness knows she’s going to be in a foul mood regardless of how you do it, but…

“She is asleep…is she dreaming, or is she embracing her own fleeting reality?” Well, that won’t get old quick.

“Well, maybe she can answer that. Izumi!” you yell up. She tosses and turns again, but doesn’t wake. You even make to kick the tree- it jars a bit, and finally you can hear a groan.

You’re already moving out of her immediately eyesight. “We’re going to have to be careful; when she wakes up, she’s going to be cross…”

“But would she cross the point of acknowledgement of-?” Before you can answer, there’s a yell, and a glint of metal is all you or Prima get before she yelps and dives out of the way- a kunai embeds in the ground maybe a second after she leaps.

At least she’s clearly got a massive hangover. That wouldn’t have missed or been so slow otherwise. She half-yells something you can’t quite understand but are pretty sure it means ‘shut up’, before she glares at where Prima was. You just stay silent and say nothing as Prima cowers, mumbling something to herself you can’t pick up.

There’s a few more seconds as Izumi blinks once, twice, three times before you hear a soft ‘what the fuck’?

Probably your cue. “Back with us, Izumi?”

A groan is your response as she cradles her head. “I...am starting to think I’m rather weak to spirits if I imbibe…”

“Fair assessment. Think you can get down on your own or you need some help?” You’re pretty sure it’s safe enough to get closer now…

“...fine. Help me down.” With that said, she starts clambering down, and you and Prima are quick to help her as you try to meet her halfway.

After some careful positioning, you’re both down...technically. The last few feet prove to be tricky when one of the ‘branches’ bends a bit too much and results in her losing stability, and, well...she’s heavier than she looks, not that you’ll ever tell her that.

At least she didn’t land on Prima.

After a few more minutes of grumbling and complaints at the world and her own weakness for drink, she manages to get off of you, and you both dust yourselves off. “Okay...so where is Lorelei and...what’s her name? Kane?”

“No clue,” you offer. “Prima isn’t sure either.”

“Fantastic,” Izumi grumbles. “So, where do we start?”

“I DO have something...I think,” Prima mentions. “I’m...I’m recovering some audio. Several hours ago. Apparently this was supposed to be a meeting area of some sort? We all split up, it seems, and Lorelei went towards the...interactive bird exhibit. I’m not sure what that is...there’s nothing in my databanks about it. Perhaps I was storing it all in my RAM? That’s...distressing. If distressing is meant to be distressing. But then maybe since I don’t want to be distressed, it isn’t?” Well...at least she’s getting better. “But it’s unlikely she’s still there. She also mentioned something about seeing how fast Kane is...”

“Fine. To the bird exhibit.” The three of you start walking with little fanfare- frankly, none of you are in great shape at the moment. “Best lead we’ve got anyway.”

You all trudge along in silence, which is enough to realize that yeah, it seems like you’re in after hours...or most likely technically before hours now. There’s a number of exhibits about more general subjects as opposed to any sort of specific history or anything- mostly just showcases of fancy animals or plants or the sort, and some things pertaining to the Intersection itself, like the first Outgoer to bring back certain technology types and all that.

The ‘interactive bird exhibit’, as you eventually discover, isn’t about interacting with birds at all. It’s about living AS a bird, as it turns out. At least, from what you can gather from this. Some sort of immersive VR thing. Can even pick your bird.

Unfortunately, there’s no sign of Lorelei or Kane...well, at least them not present. There IS an article of clothing there that looks familiar, though- Kane’s jacket, on one of the benches nearby. As you grab it, you notice there’s a strange smell on it- not just sweat and booze, but something else, too. Perfume? It smells flowery enough…

“So, any other signs of them?” Izumi asks. You shake your head.

“Maybe there’s...flower exhibits?” Prima suggests. After a bit of checking around, to your surprise, there IS that. There’s also some sort of ‘5 Senses Experience’ that you could go to…

>You think that’s one of Lorelei’s usual perfumes...did she try to take her home?!
>Try this Flowers and Beauty exhibit. Maybe she and Kane literally stopped and smelled the roses.

i always saw Lori as the "evil magic girl" you know the classic villan that is related to the protagonist? The fact that she had a little sister that wanted to follow her around and Lori mostly ignored her makes me think on that at least
>>
>>3159194
Lorelei went over her backstory during our job in that western monster hunter mash up world Miranda took her on. It was something about being a magical girl idol and fighting some guy who was trying to become all the musicians ever. She basically sung herself out of her reality in order to save it, which was how Sal found her. Then after she discovered that she was stuck here, she went off on a week long bender before her funds were pretty low and she had to start working again.

As for the little sister thing, that’s probably just typical big sibling shittiness, rather than actually being evil.

You’d rather not start to think about what Lorelei may or may not have attempted with Kane without any oversight...besides, part of you wants to say she’s not THAT reckless.

The other part of you has to hold back a laugh at such a vain hope. Instead, outwardly, you just motion to the sign that Prima spotted- although that brings with it a throb of pain that reminds you of just how annoying all those flower smells are going to be, most likely. “Let’s find the fields. I hope that smell didn’t come from there- I hate tracing steps backwards.” The others nod, and there you set off.

The ‘Flowers and Beauty’ exhibit is prefaced with an allergy warning and also a large note about how ‘beauty is ephemeral and changing, and these are merely examples of beauty across many different spectrums and societies.’ That said, a lot of it seems rather typical- there’s a LARGE wall of flower examples along with fashion statements said to be inspired by them from a wide variety of worlds. Even you have to admit, it’s as pretty as advertised. There’s even a ‘grove’ of them in the back of the room- whatever building this is, it’s probably big. Or at least long.

“Alright, now we just need to keep an eye out for-” suddenly, a rustling comes from the field, and your heads immediately whip towards it. It’s then, though, that you notice something off-kilter...some of the plants seem flattened, for whatever reason. Like they’d been pressed down...
As you step over, carefully, you can hear snoring...is that them?! You quickly see a shock of dirty blond hair, and another body lying beneath it- yeah, that’s the two of them, thank goodness. Passed out, Lorelei on top of Kane, the both of them hugged close...in the middle of what you’re pretty sure is an attempt from them at some sort of crop circle…?

Izumi at least seems rather surprised. “Lorelei?”

There’s a snort from her as she snuggles closer to Kane. “Mmmh...No thank you, Mr. French Fry, your wife has been a lovely host...”

“Stay here,” you tell the others, as you look around briefly. Place full of flowers and junk, oughta be some kind of watering system around here somewhere…aha!

On the far wall, a hose, one with a sprinkler head. It seems like there’s a very specific on-off switch, so likely no high-pressure water stream. Still, it’ll work. Just need to aim it right, and…

“PUGAHGHAH!” Yup, cold water, too. Perfect. She scrambles off , resulting in a screech from Kane, too, as she feels the cold stream shock her system. “What the bitch shit stop it!” She waves her hands in front of her ineffectually before she squeals, grasping her head for a few moments, and then immediately curling up into a fetal position. “Shit, fuck, ow ow ow ow fuck me, what the fuck…”

“Oh maaaan…” Kane at least seems more together, although she’s covering her face. “What the hell…”

“Rise and shine, ladies,” you deadpan. “We REALLY need to get out of here.” You knew Lorelei could...well, not ignore a hangover, but if push came to shove, any Outgoer worth their motes (in your opinion) would be able to hold off a hangover in order to get the job done. Hopefully they could tap into that here and now.

“What the ACTUAL fuck, ‘Randa?!” Lorelei complains, leveling a stink eye at you. “Couldn’t just, I dunno, slap me awake or something?”

“Considering we need to get out of this museum before we’re accused of breaking and entering, I think she went rather light on you,” Izumi says placidly. “Now come on, you two, let’s move.”

“Fucking...damnit, I don’t even remember how much I had,” she complains as she takes Izumi’s hand and you haul Kane up. She seems more embarrassed than anything else. “Fuck, this hurts. Fine, okay, let’s get the hell out of here.”

You’re probably going to get an angry email from the museum’s security, but better that, an apology, and fee to pay than having to deal with anyone in person. At least the guard on duty seems to be...lax. Although his scarred up face makes you think he might’ve earned a quick snooze here and there.

“Never liked Walks of Shame,” Lorelei mutters as you all clamber down the steps- the lights and sounds of the eternally-partying Festival District is a bit too much for you, but you tamp down your bile. “How early is it…?”

“Early enough? Or too early, maybe?” Prima asks. Guess she still has some detoxing to- “OH NO! The competition!” Without warning she immediately takes off down the street. “I’mverysorryIneedtomeetMonoforpracticegoodbye!”

“Wha?” Lorelei asks blankly.

You sigh. “Forget it, let’s just go home.”

Kane shrugs, giving a shaky smile. “Yeah, sure. I’ll see you guys later- it was actually pretty fun. Hoo...” Taking a deep breath, she begins walking her own way, waving without looking back.

Damnit, you need a bath. And some Intoxiclear. After that...

You’re usually more a shower person, but hells, a good hot soak every now and again really doesn’t go amiss…helps that your hangover is gone entirely now. Such a damn relief.

Sadly, that doesn’t mean that your day is up- although that’s more your own fault than anything else. Mono and Prima have that dance competition thing happening later today. You’re probably going to need to show up at that. Well, you supposed you’re not really ‘needed’, but it feels like it. One of those ‘leader’ things, you suppose.

You’ve at least got enough time to enjoy a bit of quiet peace, though. That, plus a shopping trip to restock on food- you swear you had ham steaks in here that aren’t there anymore…

That, some seasonings, the usual...when you get to the counter and the cashier, you start to pay, before pausing as a thought comes to you. “...hey, do Outgoers get discounts here? I never saw any signs, so...”

“Yes?” she actually sounds CONFUSED. “We always have, why do you ask?”

Fucking hell. “Nothing.” You flash your license, and in an instant a bit less than half the cost is immediately ripped off the total price. You think a part of you was ripped out, too.

A raucous laughter echoes in your head, and you clench your bags tight as you mentally yell as hard as you can at that insufferable liquid pile of ASS.

The laughter doesn’t stop.

As you get home, the thought of getting another apartment flashes through your head again. You’re making enough to afford it nowadays…

Almost as if hearing those thoughts, you quickly get a message. As you expected, it’s from the museum you ended up in, the Museum Falantique, and its various subsections...Novost Center for the Performing Arts apparently being one of them. A Center that’s a whole section? Huh. And they’re demanding 19 Large Motes for ‘after-hours trespassing, disruption of Museum property, repairs to non-permanent exhibits, and general atonement fees’. As a official Division Leader for an Outgoer outfit, apparently the blame squarely falls on you. Great.

...Honestly, even this is slightly less than you were expecting, but you’re not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. They’re requesting you do it in person ‘to exhibit proper apologetic attitude’ within 3 cycles or else face ‘further reclamation efforts’ I.E. they’re going to start going after your personal effects.

You’ve got 71.00 LMotes at the moment. You’ll pay before you get to the dance thing...but that brings another question that you normally don’t find yourself asking. Are you going to wear anything different? It’s not exactly a formal-dress event.

>You’ll stick to your usual jacket and skirt. No reason to change what isn’t broken.

Would explain business like the one from the automatons who try to acquire as many motes as possible with scummy deals.
>>
>>3160558
It's pretty exorbitant. I believe we are in need to hire a lawyer or a firm of it and get a research in that kind of stuff.

But then again the Lawyer might be more expensive then actualy paying the motes they want us to. Beside it was just a couple of freaking flowers!!!
>>
>>3160573
Or it's something that the Care House teaches, but Miranda didn't pay attention to, that there is a Notice Board and informational circular that has all of the benefits and how to get them laid out, but Miranda never bothered to read it because she's smart, she's independent, she doesn't need government/Dealmakers in her life.

All the while, for the past 90 years, she's been spending double the amount of money she would have normally paid if she'd actually paid attention to what the government circulars said her benefits were.

>You’ll stick to your usual jacket and skirt. No reason to change what isn’t broken.
Almost 80-90 years of double pay gone just because she didn't bother to inquire. I'm surprised Miranda didn't have an aneurysm right on the spot.
>>
She's trying very hard not to think about how much money she's wasted. Kinda failing.

Every now and again I like reminding people that although Sal is nicer than a lot of his compatriots, he's still an asshole by most metrics of the word and will do or not do things solely because the idea amuses him. He COULD'VE told Miranda about her various perks, but he decided that her finding out on her own would be far funnier. He's immortal, he can wait for a delayed joke payoff.

It's worth noting that discount wasn't marked as a universal 50% off everything forever, only 50% off at that store. I assume it's similar to military discounts, which range from "free stuff" to 10% off these specific items" to "what discount?"

Screw it, you’ll just go with your usual outfit. No reason to try and make too many waves or pretend you’re something you’re not.

Like someone who’s spent the better part of her outer-life paying near double for food. FUCK that’s gonna piss you off for a while!

It’s annoying enough that you actually spend some time shadowboxing and doing some basic calthestentics in your HQ if only to work off the angry energy a bit. Calling investigations down, food discounts- you know Outgoers had SOME perks, but why the HELL were you so slow to find THESE out? Granted, you consider yourself a rather simplistic sort, when it came right down to it. You weren’t one to make many waves or question much- not now, anyway. Last time you started questioning things...well, you’re here. That’s the end result.

Would you change it? No.

...longest you’ve thought about it in a while. Hopefully you can go longer now.

Grumbling to yourself and cursing yourself and Sal again (who just starts up laughing AGAIN in your head), you head out leisurely- grabbing Red since there’s no one but yourself to worry about now. At least riding is always pleasurable…

First stop is the museum, as planned. You’re quick to introduce yourself to the guardsman, who simply nods. His voice is raspy, almost pained, like he doesn’t use it much. “One for highers up. Outgoer here to pay for the incident.” There’s a confirmation, and you’re pointed to the elevator. “Seventh floor. Room 202.”

It’s...less ostentatious than you expected. Just leads out into a simply business hallway. 202 isn’t very far, and when you open it, you’re surprised to see a Deal-Maker sitting there placidly. This one’s taken the form of some kind of...cat-like creature only with bat wings and ears. “Mm. Have you the payment for your little...adventure? I appreciate your promptness, mmm. Shows responsibility. That is, unless you come so fast to bargain, perchance?” A pupiless eye narrows as a grin grows from nowhere. “Something in exchange for holding fast to your precious life, these motes of everything?”

> “No quarrel, sir. Here’s your payment.” Be done with it. You’ve got a performance to get to.
> If he’s offering… “Well, now that you mention it…is there anything I can do that would make up for it?”

And now the reason for the high price makes sense...he wants a favour. Wonder if this is about the vacancy in the dealmakers council. Or was that something completely unrelated?

How much do your gardeners get paid? If it is taking 20 motes to cover up a crop circle maybe I'm im the wrong lime of work.

Not usually do you get a Dealmaker to sort out a small crisis like this. They definitely planned this.
>>
>>3160697
>‘after-hours trespassing, disruption of Museum property, repairs to non-permanent exhibits, and general atonement fees’.
It wasn't just a gardening fee. the crushed flowers were the only thing that we saw before bolting out with lorelei and kane. Also keep in mind that this payment is also to avoid bringing the authorities into this and make things worse to us.
>>
>>3160705
It definetly explains the absurd amount of motes being charged.

We should not be dealing with a Dealmaker without our own on hand, ans I'm suspicious.

>>3160697
Also this. That's a full job's pay, before taxes. A couple of months IRL.

So we've spent ~30 LMotes already. We should avoid spending another 10-15 on clothes pre-mission as we often do.

I'd argue that the incident with Interdiction was a tad bigger than this because it's happening between 2 Outgoer groups and was creating some frictions. This is just a bunch of drunks causing a scene in a closed museum when no one was around.
>>
>>3160725
I'm just honestly surprised in seeing a deal-maker doing some kind of flowery museum. But i figure not every deal-maker wants or works in the outgoer business.

>>
>>3160722
We already tend towards the larger jobs, but ~20 LMotes seems to about be our capacity. Anything larger usually requires more of SES, necessitating a split payment. And better paying jobs tend to take considerably longer.

>we need to stop using money on clothes
Please yes. Every time we justify the new, "cost as much as the mission payout" purchases with "we can use them on later missions", but we always just buy more clothing the next time instead. I'd bet we've spent more on clothing that actual mission gear.
>>
>>3160736
LATE RUN?!! FUCK YEAH!!
>>
>>3160733
It has been said before that dealmakers are straight up weird. the one at interdiction liked gardening and sweets, and sal is sal. Having a dealmaker that has a museum seems like one of the tamer things they can do.
>>
>>3160676
Whatever this guy wants, you want no part of it. You’ve already got your hands full with one Deal-Maker, you don’t need to worry about another, no matter the reason. “No quarrel, sir. Here’s your payment.” His smile drops but a fraction- you suppose he’s getting something out of it regardless as you transfer the motes to him.

>Current Motes: 52.00

“Much obliged.” If he’s otherwise disappointed, you can’t tell. “It’s good that a worker of your caliber was so prompt and willing to understand your situation. No excuses, no sideways explanations, simple and direct.” He flops down into a more restful position, head on his forelegs. “Our business is then concluded. Be well.”

You nod, and then leave without a word, stepping quickly. Strange, to have one of them just show up...
-----------------

The New Edge Club is looking busy, with a nice flow of people coming in, it seems. You suspect Prima and Mono will be performing in front of a packed house…

Packed and loud. The place resembles more of a concert ground, with how the people are dressed- very casual urbane and street. A few in expensive suitwear- the way they look around impassively makes you think they’re agents or the like. Not sure. It doesn’t take long for you to find the main stage area, where the dancing will be done. There’s hardly any seats up front, either. Not that you want to be up there, honestly. You prefer being a bit more back...

After about twenty more minutes of the crowd working itself into a fervor as the time approaches, the lights dim.

“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!” a female voice, bold and full of sass cries out. “WELCOME ALL... TO THE TWENTY FOURTH ‘CRUSH THE FLOOR’ DANCE COMPETITION!” A raucous cheer goes up at the signal, and the MC shows up on stage- big hoop earrings, a light tan, tight shirt and pants, the works. She quickly explains the rules, the crux of it that teams are based on a number of major factors- sync with the music, dance complexity, and ‘energy' being some of the biggest ones. You’re not quite entirely sure about it all, but whatever. 8 teams are here, and it's a knockout fight. The finals to be held later...

The teams are announced, but you’re just focused on what team Mono and Prima are on. Turns out it's an 8 strong team called ‘Mass Khaos’. Aside from Mono and Prima, there’s a purple salamander lady who’s sinewy body results in her lower body practically sitting on the ground, a pair of normal humans- twin boys, it seems- a four-armed insectoid man that’s dressed in a long shawl, and a rather...oddly rotund fellow that resembles nothing so much as a stretched out marshmallow, or maybe smooth snow? Not sure.

They all cheer when they’re announced, Mono even giving off a small, playful howl and Prima waving wildly before they vanish backstage.

So this is who those two have been working with, huh? Well well...time to see what it all comes to.

The competition starts out strong...at least, you think it does. Again, you’re really more focused on Mass Khaos than anyone else, and the only time you clap is when they finally come out, facing off against a team called MT Soul.

As the beat hit, the battle starts off Mass Khaos’s movements- Prima and Mono aren’t the first ones out; that’d be the four-armed guy, as it happens. He uses all of his limbs to full effect, it seems, smooth and flowing movements that remind you a bit of what Prima showed you the other day as his feet twist and sway.

And that’s about where you lose the plot- at least in terms of what’s considered good and what isn’t. There’s a lot of stylish movements, you have to admit, but the crowd seems tepid. There’s a response from the other team that you mostly ignore, and then the serpentine lady comes into play, twisting her body here and there, bobbing her head almost like a snake- there’s a moment after she finishes a move that she makes a playful snap in the other team’s face and that gets the crowd hyped a bit.

Ah, FINALLY. Mono and Prima take the stage, Mono performing a short routine in the center, before sliding back on her knees like she’s kneeling- only for Prima to leap over her in what you have to admit is a beautiful backwards flip before she lands steadily and launches into her routine of almost exaggeratedly robotic arm movements interspersed with butter smooth ground steps.

The rest of the battle is back and forth, each team executing a number of group and high flying moves, and some psuedo-interactions with the other team; the bullet point on THAT front was a surprisingly bold (although considering recent events you’re starting to reconsider her more timid nature) moment where Prima, on incoming, mimed sweeping away some trash as the opposing dancer left back to his team, unawares. About ten or so minutes later, it’s over. To your appreciation, Mass Khaos takes the first round handily, much to cheers.

>>3160860
The second round, against a team called ‘Wicked Kids’ (and indeed, it looks like all of them should’ve been in the Care House, regardless of actual age) doesn’t go as well. YOU thought they did fine, (in particular Mono pulled out a handstand spin that made you wonder just how much she’d been practicing her agility) but the judges don’t seem to think as well. They win, but barely by points, and it’s clear that there was a disconnect between the judges and the crowd, who seemed to prefer the other team. Still, they were in.

...And then they were out. The third round, even you could tell they were in some trouble; you managed to recognize a few moves that everyone had done already, and marshmallow man nearly miss a flip, though he did manage to turn it in to a four point landing and keep going from there. Prima’s fancy incoming footwork seemed an attempt to take the focus off, but you doubted that helped much. The crew had been called ‘Thunder Heard’, and it showed- they were big on group routines, and it was, honestly, impressive how unified they were; they kept to the beat very well, too, even in solo moments.

Huh, maybe you’re picking a bit of this up.

Either way, Thunder Heard is pronounced the winners, much to your friend’s disappointment. Still, there are handshakes and hugs all around- it seems as though there really aren’t any hard feelings. Mono and Prima at least seem in good spirits.

Thinking about it...you’re happy for them. This is their little thing. Might not always be the best, but they’re enjoying it and they did it all themselves. Something to be said for that. Besides, there’s always room for growth. You’ve little doubt that they’ll work at it the longer they stick around.

It makes you wonder what you might be like if you had more hobbies. ...Probably more worried about multiple things, you think with a chuckle. You can just imagine being into something like art, or...dunno, some sort of collecting hobby. You’d just get worried about getting every piece of whatever it is, or perfecting an art style or something. You’ll stick to your movie critiques, riding, and cooking.

Your interest holds out for one more battle, where a group name D’Vine is the winners, before you head out of the venue, insteading hanging around the entrance. Honestly, it was feeling claustrophobic anyway.

After some time, you hear some cheering, and not long after that, you see Mono and Prima walking out with her dance friends, talking animatedly. Seems like they’re galvanized for later…

Still, it doesn’t take long for Prima to notice you, and a tug on Mono’s arm gets her attention as well. She quickly waves farewell to her friends before jogging up to you. “Yo, boss! Didn’t think you’d be here, honestly. Pri said you and them had a bit of an adventure earlier today…”

“That’s one way to put it,” you grouse lightly. “But, no, I figured I should at least support you. You both did pretty well, in my opinion.”

“Aw, nah. I mean, we were okay, I guess, but we screwed up WAY too much in the third round,” Mono demurs. “Missy says we just need to work out our routines a bit more and nail down our toprock, but we did better than she expected for our first comp.”

“I’ve already catalogued our errors and I hope to be able to copy the visual feed to an external device,” Prima points out. “I think being able to review our errors will be very beneficial before next practice.”

Mono grins, although you detect a hint of self-depreciation in it. “Sounds like a plan, so long as work doesn’t call before then. Before we go over all the ways we sucked, though, I’m kinda hungry. Mind if we stop somewhere?” Prima shakes her head no, and thus Mono turns to you. “Boss, you wanna come with?”

There’s a second of thinking about it, before you shake your head. This is for them. “I wouldn’t want to intrude. Just make sure you use your discounts.” Although you doubt they know abou-

“Oh, don’t worry, I’m givin’ ‘em a real workout!” She laughs, and you feel something inside you pulse hotly. “Glad I asked when I first went shopping, y’know?”

Calm. “Right.”

“So, whatcha off to now?” Good question. Although you know the answer involves work already...

Still worth to try and we can always say that it will be easier to do the job and ao acquire the money faster if we know more about the setting mood before hand.
>>
>>3163889
Part of the problem I think is that anons think a high stat is a good stat. And our natural Intimidation is high, so let's boost it more!
I think it'd be interesting to try for a high Plainness or Humor stat.
>>
>>3163895
Honestly i think a good dose of Hothead abd Plainess would fit Miranda for this next job. Plainess lower the otherworldly nature and a good balance of humour and hothead would be a good combo so she would be less...intimidating

Or we could just be the Batman for Izumi superman. Although now that i said that people will just bash it away. And i don't blame then we always have high intimidation and most of our gear boosts that status.
>>
Alright, we're gonna look up some nice guy work. I'll be preparing the list.
>>
>>3163906
I think part of the problem with Hothead is with it’s connotations with a sort of Shonen Jump kind of main character, like your Luffys and your Izukus. Meanwhile, Miranda is much more of a cynical mercenary type of MC.

I wouldn’t mind a more “Red oni, blue oni” dynamic with Izumi, though, so long as we don’t get crazy with the accessory purchases.
>>
>so long as we don’t get crazy with the accessory purchases.

I think the last two actions killed most of the people mood to spend in clothes. We literaly spend the worth of a entire job just to pay up drunkeness shenanigans
>>
>>3163955
We should pester Lori to pay us at least half of that fine. We may be responsible for her actions but it was still her who decided to do that stunt.
>>
>>3163989
Let’s just have them chip in a few extra motes for the next HQ renovations. That way they can feel like it’s a penalty that helps the whole team get a new benefit.
>>
>>3163989
To be honest Izumi, Us, Prima and Lori are all at fault for doing that since we did break into the museum.

Now that i think about it wonder if the cat/bat Deal-Maker was actualy Kane superior and this was his/her/it attempt to get a co-job with us and Sal.

But i guess that is unlikely to be the reason. I mean why else would she try to charge just us and not charge Kane too? Hopefully it was because it though Kane was part of our outgoer group.
>>
>>3163998
Now that i think about it...why wasn't Kane charged for the breaking and entering too? She was the one sleeping in the flowers with Lori after all.
>>
>>3164005
We dont know if she was charged for it, but doesn't hurt to ask kane. We also have to call the other girls for their money; we might be the leader, but that money came from our pockets
>>
>>3164005
On the positive, that means she’ll buy the first round the next time we go out drinking with her again!
>>
>>3164004
Lori and Kane were the only ones that broke in. We walked in after they opened and hosed them down. We got the fine because she's our employee, though we weren't on company time so I'm not sure why it fell on us. I do think Lori should have to pay at least most of it, though we might just dock a few LMotes over her next few missions as I don't think she floats much cash.

>>3164005
We don't know if she was, we don't have access to her mail.
>>
>>3164018
We should talk to Kane and work on a way to say that she was under us at the moment and that the Deal-Maker is just trying to pull a fast in Kane and our group. We already payed for the ordeal and he has no right to charge another company/group for something WE already payed up.
>>
>>3164023
Yeah probably should do that.

>>3164022
I would rather not. Don't want to end up having to pay abother 20 LMotes to pay for the damage that our drunkness might cause.
>>
>>3164025
>he has no right to charge another company/group for something WE already paid up.
He didn't have a "right" to fine us at all, but we payed anyway to avoid making trouble through more official channels.
>>
>>3164025
For all that we know we just paid for the stuff our group did. Kane is a different matter altogether.
>>
>>3164029
Yeah i guess this was a more out of the books thing. Even so we payed for our group so he shouldn't need to charge Kane. I'm just happy that whatever he tried to pull was completely twarted when we decided to pay up and not try to negotiate.
>>
>>3164022
>again
After this last time cost us the same as a long-term mission pays out, I don't think Miranda or anons will be keen to go out again anytime soon.
>>
>>3164031
Well that seems unfair...and i also like Kane and i i admit that her story of not wanting to screw up hit home with me. Specialy since if she gets charged for this absurd amount of motes she will get a damage on her humour and she will think she screwed up again.

But maybe i'm just being overly sensitive with the situation.
>>
>>3164033
I definetly won't. We could have used that pay to get more stuff. At least with a villan/evil run we can loot the good guys and assault banks so we can convert stolen stuff into motes.

Hopefully we get in a good setting were the villans have lots of money and gold that we can grab.
>>
>>3164037
She (hopefully) wont get charged 20 motes because ahe would be paying her proportional part; so around 6-7 motes and like i said before, this is way better than bringing the matter to the police.

It was back during the Artificer Quest crossover, in the second half of the thread. We defeated a merc by the name of Riza the Calamity Dog who was armed with a fuckhueg axe and some red power armor by stabbing her in the eye socket with our rapier. We then had a heart to heart moment with Izumi over her body after we beat off that diseased blight monster thing. There was a bunch of arguments afterwards about what to do with the axe.

Here's the thread, look for this picture for the start of the battle.

1st Question: Yes.

2nd question: No, and in fact you technically can't take anything that isn't given to you or acquired due to specific situations (like killing the previous owner in the line of the job). There's exceptions and loopholes, but in general if you don't have permission to take it then you can't just STEAL.

>>3164332
Oh yeah, that thing. Odd, I remembered the axe but not the armor. You still need to repair that shit, then. Gonna have to come up with some stats.

At any rate, writing! (Although it's mostly links and stuff.)
>>
>>3164333
Not a leader, but someone that can turn the tides of the battle in a dramatic way. The description of the mission says that the BBEG knows and has countered the good guys' strategies. They need us to break the current status quo.

> "Hm...no, I think my current set of gear should be good." (Proceed to loadout and equipment set.)
Have we even tried going into a mission au' natural? I mean, Miranda really 'ought to know what she looks like without extra gear.
Is it just her usual outfit but normalized to the setting? That might be acceptable.
>>
>>3164332
>>3164345
We didn't, far as I can tell. The red merc was a clean kill through the eye, but we never even talked about looting the armor, and even if we had it still would have had a dead merc in it.
>>
>>3164351
We took it back in http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/2664025/

Don't have to go too far, it's just after we had a talk with Izumi.
>>
>>3164345
>2nd question: No
Ok, I was mixing up looting with cashing that check mid-job then. Thanks for the clarification.
>take it then you can't just STEAL.
This I'm a little less clear in though. We've had plenty of opportunity (such as the recently mentioned Mob vault we didn't loot) that would have clearly been theft.
>>
>>3164349
>Is it just her usual outfit but normalized to the setting?

Essentially.
>>
>>3164345
>There's exceptions and loopholes, but in general if you don't have permission to take it then you can't just STEAL.
So in order to take stuff, we just have to kill the previous owner and take it. We can’t just steal it, we have to LOOT it. And then we put it in our Bag or hold on to it till the end of the mission to have it converted with the payment.
>>
Maybe we could be C on plain with a B- on hothead, so we look like any common human but hero looking enough.
or am I just misunderstanding how hothead works?
Either way, Izumi should look like a noble knight (with armor if she has some) and Miranda could be a stoic monk or mage
>>
>>3164355
No wonder it was missed the first time, those are some minor references. That conversation could imply Izumi took the armor while we took the axe, but it was taken.

Although I disagree, I think Garotoum is a little too Chaotic Evil purely based on aesthetics, less said for his personality the better. I am interested in what his stats are. Maybe we toss the idea at Izumi if she wants to bring him as a tactical distraction or not.
>>
>>3164465
We can bring him for a test drive of sorts and use it as a "last resort" utility because the missions are the best place to test these things and if we leave it on the intersection it would be as if we threw those 11 motes to the drain.

>>
>>3164498
To be fair most of the time being intimidating will stop people from second guessing what we are able to do. And Miranda wasn't the type of girl to care much with being nice, just do the job fast, get motes and move on.

Seems like. This is how the stats are calculated by my reckoning:

Intimidation: B+
Humor: C
Otherworldly: D+
Hothead: D+
Plainness: D-
>>
>>3164559
is the ring taken in consideration?

I think if we add the ring we get to A- The same level of intimidation we had in Lysan's world.
>>
>>3164566
well... they did want something to change the tides and we definitely dont look demonic...hopefully. also our humor is high enough..... bah.
>>
>>3164566
Well, we could always just put the ring in the bag of holding for the trip, then put it on for the rest of the mission. It would also be kind of fun to learn what exactly it looks like inside there from Gart.

yeah, this sounds right. we wear it after we get transported so we dont get its bonus.

After you get back, it takes a bit for you to choose what you’re wearing, but eventually you decide on a few basics. Those wings from last time...well, if they can get you in the air again, that’d be fantastic, the headband might work for a touch of additional awe, some shoes to sell the look...don’t need too much else for a job like this, you think. The idea is basically set. You’re keeping your jacket this time- if only because you want it. Now, you just need to meet at the HQ…

It takes only a few minutes, but Izumi shows up not long afterwards- to your surprise, dressed in what seems to be a dull silver, pauldron armored cape, along with a black circlet around her forehead, three spines of it going up and reaching just to her eyebrows. She’s donned long leather boots, and a short dress colored an emerald green.

She looks you up and down, cocking an eyebrow. “A bit of a standout look, then?”

“And you’re just another face in the crowd until you aren’t, huh?” you pop back. She just smirks. “Well, if there isn’t anything else you need to do…”

“By all means,” she waves you, with a surprisingly sincere smile. “Let us bring justice to a deserving world.”

...Sure. “Sal, whenever you’re ready!”

‘I do hope for a maaaaaaarvelous performance from you two!’

And then a flash of light, and you’re gone.

TIME TO BRING HOPE!!! And a little of money grabbing. :V
>>
>>3164345
>No, and in fact you technically can't take anything that isn't given to you or acquired due to specific situations (like killing the previous owner in the line of the job). There's exceptions and loopholes, but in general if you don't have permission to take it then you can't just STEAL.
Does this mean that we're not allowed on-site procurement of equipment and the acquisition (looting) of targets of opportunity?
Like we can't just break into the Dark Lord's vault and steal everything?
>>
>>3164659
It's not stealling if the dark lord is dead...If anything it means the money doesn't have a owner anymore.

I mean we got the Flamebringer when we killed the dragon knight general.
>>
>>3164667
Pretty sure magical backlash from a hidden artifact put him into a coma, so that doesn't technically count as a kill. Also, his troops did try to ask what we were doing with the Flamebringer as we were picking it up, but as this was after we just tore out an egg shaped magical crystal hidden in his armor, they probably didn't want to press the point with our A++ intimidation score.
>>
>>3164667
But we haven't been allowed to stick around and loot the target's home base in any of our previous jobs. We've always had to leave very quickly.
>>
>>3164686
Fortunantly this dark lord seems to have mutiple bases so we could probably hit a lucky spot and get any money we find. I mean he is a dark lord he must pillage villages and what not we are just taking the money that his man took from others.

As the light recedes, you find yourself in a strange circle- a glyph made one, from the immediate looks of it, and surrounded by monk-like peoples in a chant. You notice Izumi immediately take a knee; you’re not a fan of being quite so deferential, but whatever. There’s a muted gasps as people take you both in- a quick glance to your left shows you that Izumi picked her wardrobe carefully- there’s practically no changes to her outfit, save for that her dress is more of a cloth tunic, and the cape and her boots seem to have shifted material. As the group of monks quickly bow their heads, you notice yourself quickly- your wings, you don’t think, are gossamer this time, but rather something else. Your jacket is more of a long tailed cloak with short sleeves; enough to wrap yourself fully in from the neck down. You’re in short, wrapped boots, each of them with buckles with twisting clasps, but as far as your forehead or other facial features goes, you’re uncertain.

You don’t have time to check yourself further (you never do) as someone comes forth to meet you- at first you’d think him some sort of peasant, but as you look closer at his silken garb and frayed yet fine shoes, you realize that these are the tattered trappings of nobility- someone who’s seen combat when they weren’t supposed to, lived to tell the tale, and came out all the stronger for it.

“Ah...so the summons ritual was heeded. Small blessings, indeed.” His voice is soft and weary, and he shakes his russet red hair as though considering what he just said. “Hail, warriors. I am Prince Fallon Emeral, of the Royal House of Emeral. It was by my word that you were summoned...hopefully to deliver us in this dark hour.”

Izumi rises confidently, a steady fire burning in her eyes. “And so we shall. I shall, to you, be known as Hylinde, if that sits well with you.”

“Of course.” And there he turns to you, his eyes alight with curiosity- he purses his lips, but that’s the only indication of any seeming discomfort. “And your own name, miss?”

“Yvrace,” you decide. It sounded sufficiently intimidating in your opinion.

He nods in understanding. “As you say. If you would follow me?”

You both nod, and proceed to do so. As you walk down the halls, he begins again. “I beg your pardon, normally we would have a grand proclamation, nobles on hand to greet you...but as you doubtlessly know, we are in dire straits at this time. Our holdings grow slim, and though the royal coffers are rich, little we have to spend them on...save you. Ah, but I withhold all the conversation to myself. Pray, have you any questions? I cannot answer all things before we reach the King, but I can try my best.”

That is unusual. If they've survived long enough to repel an initial assault and hold what they have left, they should have been spending money like water.

>>

>>
>>3164775
Too big to fit, plus everyone wanted to keep it as more of a trophy then a weapon.

>>
>>3164781
Yea, that's why I mentioned it in particular.

>>3164784

>>3164787
Maybe after we get the power armor back up and running, we could do that. Until then, we can always dream...
>>
>>3164798
why until we get the power armor? we can definitely use the axe and we have out own power armor.
>>
I'm gonna have to bow out. I'm exhuasted. Run continues tomorrow.
>>
>>3164798
Yeah there's nothing stopping us from using it anyways, it's just nothing special and way to cumbersome to be practical on most missions.
>>
>>3164803
That's the thing, the power armor we have is damaged. We'll need to get it repaired when we can. As for the axe, it's a fuckhueg axe, with all the weight its size implies. We could use it outside of the power armor, we'd just be really slow and awkward wielding it.
>>
>>3164814
ah really? Oh well see you tomorrow Handler.

Anon, the damaged power armor I'm referring to IS the notmasterchief armor.
>>
>>3164846
mmm no. we have the one we bought and that one is safe and sound as far as i know.
>>
>>3164861
The power militant armor and power shell leg armor? I didn't think that was an actual full set of power armor because both pieces were bought separately. I'm talking about the full set from the Crossover one we brought back home.
>>
>>3164884
we did get a nifty boost when we used it and managed to hold together against a meta that had several stolen powersets. For all that its worth, we'd rather sell for scraps the other or give it to owlia for tinkering because the repair fees might not be worth it.
>>
>>3164891
It's worth putting out some feelers on what it'd take to repair it at least, though fees are to be negotiated upfront.
>>
>>3164898
i dont think that the repairs will cost less than 11 motes(which is the total price of the power armor components we bought)
>>
>>3164902
The components are also completely cosmetic, despite appearances. Plus we don't even know how much work it'll take. The kill was a sword through the eye, so there can't be that much damage.
>>
>>3164891
That's just the normal clothes shifting to the reality we end up in.

Anyway, I'm of the opinion that we keep the Artificer power armor, but we treat it more like a vehicle, like what Fallout 4 did with it's version.

>>3164902
We have Owlia working on the helicopter we brought back, I don't see why she can't treat the power armor like another mode of transport.
>>
>>3164911
Mostly damage to the helmeted area, looking back on the fight, along with the usual superficial dings and scratches. We replace that with a new one, integrate it into the armor, and bam! we're set.
>>
>>3164922
Don't forget to have the shield crystals and some Glyphs added on.

Axe is garbage compared to the gravity sword we also never use.

We should focus on training our managers field and manage control.
>>
>>3164816
Inertia is the concern. Swinging it with our great strength also means having to stop it with our great strength.

We're more of a brawler anyways.

Basically it's too big and cumbersome for attacking smaller/weaker foes, and we simply have better options for attacking larger and stronger foes.

At best the axe is cosmetic.
>>
>>3167090
>Axe is garbage compared to the gravity sword we also never use.

You mean the Flamebringer, which we use on almost every mission? Because that’s the weapon we modified with that gravity gem we found.

As for the axe, let’s at least try it out once when we get the power armor back online. They might have some sort of combined functionality when used together.

the downgrade is that you need to bring the power armor to use effectively, which renders it useless for most situations. In that case the flamebringer can be more useful since we can make it spew a literal column of fire.

We've never even tried to swing the thing. Don't make unsubstantiated claims.

That’s one thing the Flamebringer can’t do without us training our magic spells. Meanwhile, it doesn’t sound like we need the power armor to use the axe.

you are right, i read the relevant thread again and if izumi is capable of using the thing on her own power we can too.

>That’s one thing the Flamebringer can’t do without us training our magic spells.
The mana it uses is not that high though. We also have crystals and the mana condenser that we never use, so running out of mana or using half of our pool in a single day is not a concern.

>Meanwhile, it doesn’t sound like we need the power armor to use the axe.
That is still a huge trade off because we can't hide the axe in our bag of holding like the other swords and weapons we have, and if we don't want it transforming every time we go to a new universe we'll have to treat it like we did to the flamebringer and again, we can't hide the damn thing, which means that unless we can make it possible for it to to reach us whenever we call it or at least make the handle telescopic or make the thing change size we can't use it in most missions.that arent combat focused.
>>
>>3167465
>The mana it uses is not that high though.
It’s not the possible mana cost that’s the problem. It’s the process of us deciding to learn new spells, voting on which two new spells to learn, rolling to see whether or not we learn them outright or if we risk it backfiring, and then continuing to work on the spell either while on the job or during our off hours. That’s the problem.
>>
>>3167477
what? we can already control the flamebringer's fire. Making it shoot more flames instead of burning hotter has to be a trivial thing.
>>
>>3167493
We just channeled a bunch of mana in it to make the flames hotter to melt ice. What you’re talking about is channeling the mana so that the flames leap off the blade while we aim it at a target. It’s like the difference between holding a gun in your hand and firing it, and actually aiming the gun at a target and firing it.
>>
>>3167465
>we can't use it in most missions that aren't combat focused.
Like the one we just started?
It would be nice to make it fit in the bag (maybe a removable head?) but we should try it out at least once before we start spending money on it.
>>
>>3167499
Or we could just not spend motes on a gimmick weapon.
>>
>>3167499
Thats why i said "most". For example, on the last mission it would have been a detriment, as well as on the mafia world. Having a fuckhuge axe on our backs all the time isnt always the best option.

Either way, i agree with you on the testing part.

>>3167496
Eehhh. Fair enough i suppose.
>>
Dunno why that one guy wants to make our trophy into a weapin so much.

Besides we will probably find much more nicer loot from the dark lords minions. I'm particulary interested in finding a spear to add to our weapon collection.
>>
>>3167546
Randa isn't much of a trophy taker. She usually takes stuff she can use or sell.
We don't know anything about this dark lord, nor the quality of his gear. Anything taken from him would also qualify as a trophy.
>>
>>3167558
>She usually takes stuff she can use or sell.
Maybe she needs to rethink that.
She just spent 90 years overpaying for living expenses and who knows what else.
She needs to re-examine her life and how much of it she's wasted.
>>
>>3167558
Looking back at the common magical types in the mission overview, there’s no mention of any sort of magical weapons. There might be some, but they could be very rare, meant to be used in rituals, or require you to speak a command word, if there are any.

On the other hand, the kids might like to get some sort of souvenirs from our trip, and they need to learn some self defense. As long as we avoid anything sharp and pointy, we should be fine.

I don't have a horse in this race but don't you guys see that you are all arguing for and against using a good heap of conjecture and baseless claims to make your points.

Look, we voted and taking the axe won. Obviously those who voted for want to at least try the fucking thing. If it's bad, fine, the argument is settled and we can forget about it. If it isn't, great, we now have another weapon in our arsenal and the argument is settled. Just sitting here and saying no, no, no all the time is just causing needless animosity. It won't take handler many minutes to write a short scene where she swings it in the gym and we lose absolutely nothing by doing it.

Handler, can you please make a note to make Miranda swing this fucking axe once so that we can move past these arguments?

A couple leap out at you, yeah. “I understand you’re lacking strongholds. How many do you have left?”

“A few,” he responds, a dour note in his voice. “However, they are scattered, and many of our supply paths have been cut off. I’ve had little word from our outposts and I myself am only recently removed from such a battle to keep one of our holds- far too nearby to be comfortable, truly.”

“And where would that be?” Izumi asks.

“Roughly a day and a half’s ride from here,” he responds. “Shouldin Keep- a fortress that is essentially a direct gateway to the capital lands. We’ve held, but that’s largely thanks to the terrain. It’s our major exit to the surrounding lands, as we are surrounded by mountains to the north and south, and to the west steep cliffs and ocean.”

“A natural chokepoint. Good to know,” you mutter.

“I am fortunate that the ritual was completed in time for me to see to your arrival personally,” the prince continues. “I had worried that it would take too long for me to see the results. Ah, here we are.” He stops in front of a gilded door with a single guard in front of it, who steps aside and salutes when he nods.

Opening the door, you are led through a small hallway to a side opening into a large throne room- replete with red, green, and gold in banners and etchings in the stonemasonry. But really, that’s not what you’re focused on. What you’re focused on is the man sitting on one of the two thrones at the back. He is an older man, a well-groomed beard sitting nicely on him, although his tired and sunken green eyes tell the truth of his state. His posture is rigid, nonetheless, and he holds himself with the air of a man who clearly believes he can do little else in the moment. Dressed in similar reds and golds as his son, he looks at the younger man with a questioning yet affectionate air as he goes to a knee. Izumi does as well, and so do you. Might as well look good about it.

“My lord father, these are Hylinde and Yvrace, summoned with the lost ritual as intended and desired.” He does not deign to look up, and neither do you until the man bids you.

(cont.)
>>
>>3168283
“Rise, all three of you. Little time to stand on ceremony here- not when death approaches us so quickly.” His voice is yet strong, but how much of that is an act, you don’t know. “I was informed that a single warrior summoned as such would be the equivalent of a hundred of my men or more. I greatly pray that you prove so capable.” It’s the way he says it- it’s not even a threat. More of a plea, a legitimate hope. “Know this- with life as we know it on the brink, I give you full permissions to act in whatever way you see fit to protect this kingdom and her allies, regardless of situation and circumstance. This decision I do not make lightly...but I make it all the same. Steward!”

He claps twice, and a man comes from out of a different entrance, holding two rolls of parchment, both in a large, uncapped container. “These are Royal Pardons, allowing you the King’s Freedoms in enacting any and all military and related matters in regards to yourselves.” Fallon says nothing, but looks at you both meaningfully. “I pray that you will not abuse these permissions, and use them to the best possible ability in retaking our Kingdom, and our country. Let it also be known that these only affect MY army, not any of my allies. Be mindful of that.”

“Of course, your highness,” Izumi offers as she bows. You do so as well, though you aren’t sure if you want to say anything to that…

The king doesn’t seem to take any offense to your silence, simply nodding. “If there are no further questions about the situation as such, then allow my son to bring you to the Quartermaster, as you have precious little time to prepare, and we need you on the battlefield as soon as possible.”

"You'll be going to reinforce Shouldin Keep initially," the prince explains. "We'll be using your power to, hopefully, assist in a push outwards to reclaim some vitally important roadways. We will need to be most strategic about deployment and determining where best to engage. These monsters are fierce and hard to predict- but the more areas we can liberate and bring back under our control, the better. It's the only real bright spot, honestly; they are more keen to take prisoners than slaughter wholesale, so if we can take the areas back, we can hopefully regain some manpower, and expand our efforts."

“Right, then,” you decide. You glance at Izumi with a questioning look, who minutely shakes her head. “Let’s get to the Quatermaster’s, then.”

“As you say,” the prince bows, first to his father, then to you both before leading you out.

The trip to the Quartermaster’s is fortunately fairly quick- although to your surprise it also leads to the stables. “The Quatermaster is also our foremost stablehand...at the moment,” the Prince explains after you give him a questioning look. “I trust you know how to ride horses?”

“We do,” you answer simply. It’s not something you do often, but you know how, and you’re pretty sure Izumi knows how as well, given she voices no complaints.

“Good.” A rougher voice answers as he approaches you. He’s an older sort, scraggly white hair just sort of exploding from him in all directions. He's dressed in what you can only call formal dress- although his thick leather smock ruins the look somewhat. He takes a single look at the both of you, and rears back a bit. "Bloody...bah," he mumbles under his breath. “At any rate, you’ll not have time for lessons. Come get yer supplies and pick out yer horses. If’n ya need armor or weapons as well, best tell me now. I’ve a number o’ shapes and sizes- reckon I can find somethin’ for ya.”

“What types of weapons do you have?” Izumi asks, and you both look to see what he has. It’s, unfortunately, mostly basic- nothing that you can see is enchanted or anything of the like, but he has a number of swords, spears, halberds, warhammers, and a few other...esoterics. Why does he have fans?

You’re not sure if you even want any of this, anyway. Might well just keep the weapons you have on you…

>Take a weapon?

“I’m fine with my own arms, thank you.” Yeah. Like Izumi just did. You just shrug.

“Bah, whatever. Saves me the metal. Now, while the short one (pardon him?) is deliberatin', what about horses? We’ve still got a number of good stock...”

That’s more of a question. You’re sure you could both travel there on foot, but there’s something to be said about conserving energy. It helps that there’s writing next to each one’s stables that gives information...

>Merrymaker: A soft vanilla-colored horse. ‘Bit playful, rambunctious. Not the fastest, but got a knack for feeling what its rider wants. Acts like it’s invincible.’
>Windrider: A slate-grey horse, thin and tall. ‘Excellent endurance, can be moody. Hard to get going at a strong gallop, but fast when she kicks up. Skittish around weapons.’
>Draugur: A large, russet red horse. ‘Bit of a monster, this one. Brutish, likes to muscle other mounts about. Can take an arrow or two. Decently fast.’
>Pixie: A smaller, speckled horse. ‘Loves to run. One of the fastest we got, but hard to stop.’ Friendly when you get used to her, but that takes a while.’
>You’ll be fine without a mount.

I also think Draugur will only boost our Intimidation even further and its speed is not much faster than Merrymaker's. Theid description implies that they are both warhorses and won't be as easily spooked as regular horses tend to do.

“Actually, I would like a weapon, if you don’t mind…” you mention, walking over to the selection. You’d heard a lot of things about halberds. You even knew a bit how to swing one, though you certainly weren’t any professional. Still, considering what you were likely up against, it wouldn’t go horribly amiss to have a melee weapon with some range. As you heft the polearm, you give it a few test swings to judge its weight distribution- it’s honestly not bad.

“Fair choice, then,” the Quartermaster admits. “Most guardfolk are assigned that. It’ll be good morale, I think, if they sees you with it.” Morale, huh? Okay, then. Well, that seems like it’s a decent idea- although you have to admit, you’re surprised a number of these weapons aren’t simply bladed. Some of them might even be...hm.

“I’m also taking some spares,” you say as you unfurl your bag (in the form of a small satchel) from your shoulders. The man gets maybe a syllable out before you pluck up a decently sized mace and drop it in. “He’ll like this, I think…” you mutter to yourself. Ah, that staff might be good for Harpsicorie, too. “This might work. And for the lamb…” Ah, heck, the war fan. She might dig it. “There. Done.”

“Wha...who tha...how…?” The Quartermaster seems astonished and ready to explode all at the same time before the Prince puts a placating hand on his shoulder and gives him a LOOK. Grumbling, he just grinds out his next words. “Tell me yer blasted horse…”

30 minutes later, food and supplies at the ready, you’re finally breaching the walls of the castle, riding out in a collective of black, green, and white as you atop Draugur (although you have to constantly fight the blasted horse to stay straight), Izumi atop Windrider, and the Prince atop his own steed march outwards to the first staging area of your job, Shouldin Keep. “We need to get there as soon as possible, but keep careful eyes on the road ahead. We may run into hostile peoples even here.”

“If you don’t mind my asking, sir Prince,” Izumi starts, “From what I understand, humanity does not stand alone here, correct? I saw little of other races in the castle.”

“Ah, indeed, many of our allies have been called to the front lines, or are fighting their own battles on other grounds,” he answers. “I’ve little doubt that, if we can succeed in this push, you will see much more of them as we continue to re-link our strongholds and outposts.”

“And the sooner we get to Shouldin, the better for that,” you say out loud. “These are warhorses, right? Then they should be good for long trips.”

“Indeed,” Prince agrees. “Although I hope that we can get there in time…”

The rest is short, and the ride is long, making as much headway as possible when the greenery turns to trampled ground, shorter trees, and rock, and the natural landscape gets higher on either side- a natural valley tightening in. Fortunately, there are no major hindrances getting to the keep. “Alright!” Prince warns once you’re getting close. “When we get to the keep, we need to make sure all defenses are ready, and that our chokepoint will hold. We’ll hang left and the keep should be in plain sight!

The problem...is that as you’re getting closer, you can hear the din of battle in the distance- shouting and screaming and metal clashing. Prince gets a terrified look about his face for all of a second- before urging his horse even faster, yourself and Izumi keeping pace as best you can.

You almost see it before you even get out of the valley- the Keep, a large, multi-tiered structure of brick, expanding out into the back; a solid fortification for the fighting men there, slinging arrows upon arrows into their foes. It’s not long before that stops even as you keep approaching, a large, black morass of implike beings- charging into a wall of metal and flesh. You’re not sure how big they are, but they’re maybe as tall as you, screaming in mad cacophony as they swarm on the fighters as the battle begins in earnest.

“Damnit!” The Prince swears. “They already started the offensive. Come! We must repel them!”

You glance outward, towards where they charged from- over some hills you can see a pair of larger shadows, notable even from here, roaring cries of intimidation as their smaller fellows surge forwards. It’s only for a moment, until they too hunch forward and practically disappear into the black morass, likely to have some fun themselves…

“Well?!” Izumi asks. You have maybe seconds to steer your steed towards your intended destination.

> “Start driving them from the Keep! We need to push them all back!” You need to start blasting away.

How high can we jump? If we seriously overclock our body boost magic, could we jump up onto a light barrier, jump *again*, then use the gravity sword to accelerate us into a superhero landing literally on top of their leaders with the hammer?

I know tactically this is nuts, but if we're taking shit along for aesthetic reasons then we might as well put style intimidating style into it.

One or the other...maybe not. “You relieve the infantry! I’ll handle the leaders!” you shout, already steering your steed nearer to the morass. Draugur seems to sense the intention- and relishes the challenge, neighing in what you swear is a horse war cry.

“Understood!” your partner shouts as she shears away. Her blade raised, she spurs her horse onwards, although you can tell it’s less enthused as it briefly tries to take her on an angled pat- oh.

She jumped off. Okay, sure whatever, that works.

Well. You DID figure to get eyes on you…now you’re going to need to figure out where the bosses are. And since you can’t see them by default...

“HAAAAAA!” Bellowing your own war cry, you tense yourself and leap up, a swarm of beady, orange eyes jolting your way just as you reach the apex of your jump- a mass of near-identical, pointy-toothed faces looking in actual shock.

They probably should’ve moved, you figure as you land in the middle of them, cleaving a swath of them into pieces, where they dissipate into smoke. Immediately you bring the halberd around in a massive swing, guillotining a radius of them and clearing the path for your march towards the back end of the flood.

It’s about now that they start leaping at you in earnest, however, each of them trying to rip you limb from limb- but oddly enough, they seem nearly TOO weak- or at the very least too slow to do anything. They get close enough at times to take a few swipes, but you can swing and reposition yourself too fast to give them time to capitalize. At least, for now. There’s too many to take your eyes off them, however- you still need to focus, so you just have to hope that Izumi’s got things handled on the front. Taking a massive leap to keep the mass from getting too handsy, you spare a split second to look around- there’s another plume of charging shadows to the west, approaching one of the walls, and what seems to be a lookout tower besieged by the beginnings of said dark mass. To your north is the rising ridge, where you first spotted the leaders- but there doesn’t seem to be any more shadows coming from there. The northeastern flank is clear enough, although it seems like some shadows are circling around there- although amusingly, you see juuust out the corner of your eye Draugur trampling over a few shadows himself, neighing with impunity before breaking clear of the group.

You land, a massive magiblast announcing your presence, and begin your assault anew, but you’ve got new info to consider.

>Continue forcing your way towards the back. The sooner the primary force is broken and in disarray, the sooner you can relieve everyone else.
>Break to the lookout tower- it’ll provide you with some backing manpower and might split the force into two.

Gah, you’ll just have to hope for the best in regards to the other areas. Another blast after a moment of space tears through a line of shades, and from there you alternate between massive, cutting sweeps, and blasting anyone that gets too close, your hands lighting up constantly from quick usage. A number are near point blank, but there’s no reason to stop- not yet, anyway.

A blur of movement darts past you- you’re quick to leap up to get a look, and fire a few more blasts to clear pockets of shadows out at the same time. It’s...the Prince? Sure enough, he’s managed to get into the thick of it himself, mounted and swinging his blade to harass one of the lines of battle, carving away at some of the shades as he and his warmount zip past, and breaking off before they can mount a ready response.

It’s his distraction that allows you a massive advantage as your blasts grow bigger- but it seems like the shadows are breaking up more and more, several splitting off into smaller groups, and you notice that less and less are throwing themselves at you as you continue to swing away, your deep breathing the only thing that’s giving away your exertion for now…

A shout that you recognize- a shout of men and courage- rises up from behind you; a good sign. Before you can capitalize on that, however, another pair of roars rise up to meet it; one that’s familiar. About forty yards in front of you, rising up to their full height, is one of those larger shadows; clearly one of the two field commanders. It has the same orange eyes, but its are slanted and four in number; sixe long, vicious looking spines trail from its hunched back and its oversized hands ending in ink-black claws. Twice your height, three times your width, it’s clearly an improved specimen.

The muscular beast seems like it’s finally had enough of you…at least, considering it’s staring right at you, you’re pretty sure it’s somewhat pissed off. Another swing nearly clears your view of the creature (hell, you can actually see decent-sized patches of the ground now, even) although you don’t see its partner nearby...

A strange sound of metal impacting...something, goes up, as a battle a bit behind and to your right sounds- the prince?

You don’t have much time to consider the issue as smaller, croaking screeches bellow from the surrounding shadow creatures, and the few in the way practically part as the beast charges you. You throw a magi-blast, but to your annoyance the creature shifts unnaturally, melting a part of its side practically to dodge the attack by slinking to the left as it closes in rapidly, orange tongue slathering…

>Keep your distance with this one- you can’t afford to get too reckless now. He can’t dodge everything.

Fine. You don’t like him taking ‘be like water’ so seriously, but judging by how he had to move his head to dodge that shot and not just flow around it, there’s some parts of him that have to remain solid.
A loud clang reverberates throughout the area as your halberd flies forward and meets his claws, locked momentarily. A low growl emanates from the creature as he brings his face to yours, doing his best to push you back. You’re strong enough to hold fast, though, and when he reaches forward to snap at you, you rear back-

-to plant your feet, and YANK, the creature’s brief off-balance nature letting you pull him forward easier to plant him into the ground. It’s quick enough to recognize, however, and that same stunt happens again, this time the thing’s lower body practically oozing into the ground with a wet splat as it shlurps away a distance...or at least tries to. A quick leap to pursue is all you need to catch up with him, and you can see a series of large, orange pustules on his back, where his spinal cord would be; the black morass is starting to reform around it…

Yeah, no.

You swing, and there’s a loud shriek as a good half of his mass bubbles away as half of his spine is removed from him, the once reforming shadow breaking into chips and then dissolving into nothing. What remains coalesces into a shorter beast, hardly letting itself reform into a dog-like creature before lunging at you in a fierce roar; you sidestep, neatly clotheslining the thing and sending it twisting again, landing on the ground with a vicious thud amongst its smaller shadow brethren, looking on with shock. Another leap, and suddenly your halberd is buried in its left eyes, gouging out a massive chunk of its face as it screeches in pain and hate.

You enjoy those kinda screams, being honest. Lets you know you’re doing a good job.

Probably should finish it up, though, while you still have an audience and not active participants.

Raising your halberd up, you cleave straight through the rest of its head, a loud and reverberating rattle coming up from the creature as its halves swell...wait is it going to-

An explosion of darkness bursts out of the halves, forcing you to cover your eyes briefly...but once the shadows fade, a number of the mass of creatures seem to overinflate one by one, beginning to each pop with a smaller smoky explosion.

“HA!” A loud cry brings your attention to your back end, and your quickly spin around to see a bloody and bruised Prince delivering a piercing blow to the second lieutenant shadow’s head, running him through with his sword. Izumi stands nearby, blade out and clearly prepared to intercede. The numerous men behind her are in shock- although considering the space between her and the nearest popping shadow, you figure that she’s not had too difficult a time with it either.

A quick glance at the lookout tower shows the shadows are beginning to pop and fade over there as well, but the tower stands in bad shape- and there don’t seem to be any living men there that you can see.

Still, as the creature is thrown down from the Prince’s blade and explodes similar to his kin, you have to think you did alright. Looking across the now rapidly clearing field, you breath a small sigh. Shouldin Keep held. Easy enough! Still...

One down, probably a bunch more to go. In the meantime, though...

Considering his state, might as well get over there before the adrenaline wears off. You can see a number of soldiers start towards him, but stop as you make your way towards him. “You alright, Prince?” you ask. It’s something of a rhetorical question, but it’s good to judge his mood.

“I...I’ll live,” he pants as he plants his sword in the ground to rest on it. “Provided I get first aid, of course…”

“We’ll take care of you,” you say as the both of you walk (himself slower) back to the soldiers, cheering intensely at the sight of their monarch victorious. “Can’t have you die so early, after all.”

“I’m sure,” he says before you get within hearing range of the soldiers. Once you do, he speaks up. “Gentlemen! Today you have accomplished a great feat! Today, you have greatly aided the kingdom in taking its first steps towards reclamation! Let this be forever be known as the day that when all seemed at its worst! Shouldin Keep held! Let it be forever known that Shouldin Keep will ALWAYS hold!”

Another round of cheers goes up, and you and Izumi politely clap as the soldiery- and now you can see some people coming out that you can only presume are medics of some sort to help him in. He slumps only minutely in relief at the sight, and the three of you are led into the keep proper- after you make sure to tell someone to find your horse.

Not long after you’re lead through the courtyard, you’re all quickly shuttled to a large room with numerous beds, many with injured already in them. “Begging your pardon, sir,” the thin man at the front apologizes. “We’ll section off an area for your royal person, sir.”

“Augh, no, Gavault, no need unless you truly feel it…” He’s laid down gingerly, his bruises starting to really color.

The man seems to ignore the comment, or at least doesn’t react to it. “Tybalt, water for the Prince. And fetch Aron and Balor to perform the Rites of Healing. These cuts will infect, and I suspect the Prince has more injury than is obvious.” He then immediately turns back to the Prince. “Your shirt, sir. I’ll need it off.”

The Prince raises an eyebrow. “In front of ladies, Gavault? Powerful though they may be, I still have propriety to keep!”

He raises a well-kept eyebrow. “Sire, I mean not to oppose you directly, but their countenance makes me think they’ll not take offense nor enticement.” Ha. He’s not wrong.

Either way... they DO have their own magic. Ritual stuff, right? Might be interesting to see how it’s done. Then again, who knows how long this could take...actually! “Hey, how long would these Rites take?”

“Depends on the depths of his injuries,” Gavault says easily. “Just the cuts, a matter of hours. Anything else, could be through the night.”

Ah. Izumi quirks an eye at you, but says nothing.

>Current Mana: 10,750/11,500

“Move aside,” you say blithely. “That’s going to take a bit long for my liking.” Gavault starts to say something, but all he does is the best impression of a fish he can. That shock results in a gasp of shock from him- and others, as your hands glow and you begin your healing efforts.

“What on-” you hear a voice start, but it stops as you carefully focus on the influx of mana, matching his natural systems- very faint, very...repetitive, for lack of a better word, but there nonetheless. You’re vaguely aware of some exclamations behind you, but they’re not what you’re focused on.

After a bit of time- the flesh cuts and bruises really were the worst of it- he’s largely put back together again. When you open your eyes, you see the Prince staring at you in wonder. “I...I thank you. Greatly.” He nods his head once. “But I must ask...how?”

“It’s a skill,” you shrug. You back off from him, and he carefully lifts himself off the bed, testing his work. “As new…” he marvels. “Astounding, these abilities of yours. To cast magic with no incantation or procedure...”

“Something that’s only been said to be the realm of tall tales,” Gavault says in awe. “I know not your name, strangers, but you’ve both done quite a bit in quite a short time.”

“Ah, forgive me for my errors!” the Prince says, now quite cheerful. “This one is Hylinde,” he says, motioning to Izumi, “and her companion Yvrace. They are indeed...quite unique, shall we say.”

“Clearly very much so,” Gavault admits. “I’ll not ask where they are from, nor their reason for being here- however, perhaps I could ask you to repeat that feat a few times more? As you can see, we have a number of men here that could use the attention…as well as some elsewhere.”

The Prince just grits his teeth a bit- he knows he can’t reeeallly coerce you or Izumi to do it, although Izumi might just to help, judging by the look on her face…even though a large number of these individuals seem to be missing arms or legs- they wouldn’t likely be fighting any time soon even if you did heal their other aches and pains.

Ask her if she's ever tried or managed to reattach lost limbs. Maybe if we work together on one patient?
>>
>>3171743
> “Maybe someone that could be ready to fight when I’m finished. Pick one.”

Now that you got me thinking about reattaching limbs, why don’t we give it a shot? Let’s have Izumi start with the patient, while we start healing the removed limb, then once we placed both parts together, we try to reach a healing equilibrium and then attach the limb to the body.
>>
Nice ideas but I don't think many of them held onto their limbs after having them chopped off. Maybe not even a single person.
>>
>>3172290
Hey some people get attached to their limbs, they have sentimental value
>>
>>3172290
No but their healers use slow as shit ritual magic, it's reasonably to assume that field doctors amputate limbs that they can't fix and to prevent complications from infections. I think there are enough hands to go around, so to speak.
>>
>>3172488
>it's reasonably to assume that field doctors amputate limbs that they can't fix and to prevent complications from infections.
I didn't consider it from that point of view. Now it makes sense. I have nothing against trying it. As long as we don't have to guess which limb belongs to what person
>>
>>3172488
Personally, I think we should just stick to people who know which limb is their own. Grafting someone else's hand to a patient’s stump might increase the chance of graft rejection, which would be even worse then just losing the limb in the first place.

>>
>>3172905
>Remember to charge for it.
healing people fall under the contract and do you really expect that IZUMI from all people will charge wounded soldiers?
>>
>>3173139
Actually, I don't think healing allied troops falls explicitly under the terms of the contracts.
Of course, a certain level of incidentals is probably expected, and is just being good to a potential return client, but we should remind Izumi that as much as she would want to heal everyone, that stopping enemy troops is a better way to prevent future injuries.

Though, we could potentially offer healing services as an addendum, if they'd negotiate a supplementary project with Sal.
Even though our company doesn't have dedicated healers, we have access to healing items, some of the best in the Multiverse.
Just pick up bargain bin healing potions, charge the Motes to the client, and have Lorelei, Jago, Prima, and Mono bring as many as they can afford. Transportation fees charged to the client, of course.

It sounds like the client has money to burn, so we might as well squeeze as much out as we can.

She wants to, and we're doing this to relieve some stress, so go for it Izumi, she can just sit in the triage tent doing her aoe meditation healing thing for a couple of minutes while we figure out what to do next.
Not to say we can't shill healing potions, they stick around long after we're gone. Though I believe we need to get a courier in here to properly haggle.
>>
>>3172948
Halberd master race.
>>
>>3173610
We just contact Sal. He can set up another contract and port in Mono or one of the bots.
>>
>>3173807
>>3173610
but we don't have the infrastructure to make healing potions neither the capital to buy them and resell them in the numbers they need. Also we have to take into consideration how overinflated things are in the intersection; (in a very optimist scenario) the potions probably will be sold around 1-2 Lmotes per box of 50, which means that we have to sell them at around 2-4 Lmotes. This means that for the money they paid to get us two they will only be able to cure 600 soldiers at best. Is not worth it neither for us or for them.

We could try to get a contract for dedicated healers, but i doubt they will want to give more than 12 Lmotes just to cure people when we for the double of that are going to end the evil that is plaguing them.
>>
>>3173989
Guess that's why we're contracted mercs and not contracted medics. Hey maybe somewhere out there is a market for magical nurses but they don't have the knowledge or interesting narrative to hire us. Imagine the choices, heal or not to heal or other.
>>
>>3173989
What about expanding our roster to 3?
Like, bring Lorelei or Mono, who'll take Izumi's place on the fighting front, while she stays behind with the mana condenser and heals entire armies behind us?

Look, even if it turns out to be too expensive for the client, there's absolutely no reason not to ask him if he's at least interested.
Come on, we have to upsell our company's services!

Are you a Closer or not?
>>
>>3174139
>Look, even if it turns out to be too expensive for the client, there's absolutely no reason not to ask him if he's at least interested.
Eh, you are definitely right on that. We bring Mono into the fray, let Izumi heal as many people as she likes and add another ~12 Lmotes to the deal.

>>3174136

>We didn't even get a proper briefing on our targets
They are shadowpeople, are being controlled by an evil overlord and we need to beat him ASAP to win the war. We might need some extra information on their (and the BBEG) weaknesses and strengths, but we really can't get that information right now in the middle of the battlefield.
>>
>>3174187
Yep, just ignore them.
>>
>>3174185
If we negotiate a second contract for a healer position, then that's additional payment and our share doesn't go down.
What the fuck is wrong with you that you would think that getting the client to purchase an additional service would mean them getting more for free?

As for us not having that kind of service, Izumi is doing it right now and not getting us paid for it.

>>3174187
First, the prince obviously wants to have Izumi heal more people. It says so right in the story post.
Second, our next briefing is going to be about a selection of targets, something that the Prince would determine once he has a report on the status of the stronghold and the current targets he originally had selected, so there's obviously going to be time to ask him about paying for a dedicated healer as a new supplementary contract.
>>
>>3174214
The battle is over though. The enemy was defeated now the people will recover. Then after it we will move.
>>
>>3174139
>Are you a Closer or not?
Stay butthurt buddy.
>>
>>3174240
No, you're the stupid one if you can't see the Prince obviously wanting Izumi to do more healing when he should be wanting us to go out and secure the roadways.
>>
>>3174245
And are we moving now or waiting for Izumi to finish healing everyone like she and the prince want?
>>
>>3174248
Obviously you can't close deals since you're not even looking for opportunities.
>>
>>3174185
>And reduce our pay to 8 motes before taking away the cost of the potions?
We only get a reduction if we call someone to help. In this scenario we are making a new contract.

>>3174245
we can go to the briefing and after it (and discussing it with izumi) we can tell the prince about hiring medical services.
>>
>>3174261
As it was writen with the options? I don't know. But i suppose she will probably heal as much as she can and then the prince, or us with the Prince, will take in consideration the next course of action.

The battle is won and staying one day to recover and have the soldiers healled will give us more people to throw at the enemy.

The prince said we would need to be carefull with deployment since the enemy knows about his strategies.
>>
>>3174288
Pretty sure that calling in a delivery of health potions counts as help.
>>
>>3174288
That would depend how long it would take. Don't forget they used a lost ritual to summon us. But i guess Sal can have us pop another ritual scroll to have a medic present.

Honestly i don't know how forming a contract at the middle another would work.
>>
>>3174298
Depends on how the contract re arrangement works. Which i have no idea on how it's done.
>>
>>3174298
Calling in a delivery of potions or a healer is a separate contract that doesn't detract from our own payment.
Why would you give the client a free shipment of potions? The offer was to create a second contract with another payment for a different service. What is so difficult to understand?

>>3174306
All we have to do is call Sal in our head and he can appear in front of the Prince to negotiate another contract.
>>
>>3174298
health potions aren't cost effective. Ideally we'd bring someone else that will take Izumi's place as our fighting partner so she can heal as many people as she wants.

>>3174306
>Honestly i don't know how forming a contract at the middle another would work.
In this particular case it would be an addition to the one we have, unless we find an independent medic, which in that case it can be a different contract altogether.
>>
>The Prince just grits his teeth a bit- he knows he can’t reeeallly coerce you or Izumi to do it, although Izumi might just to help, judging by the look on her face
We know the Prince wants this service, we know that Izumi is going to provide this service unless we actively hold her back.
So why not offer a way for the Prince to get this service and continue the fight against the Dark Lord unabated, AND our company gets properly paid for a service that Izumi is about to give out for free and will be bogging us down as we meet more injured soldiers and civilians in the future of this contract?
>>
>>3174214
What we got was a quick summary of their situation. How did BBEG get so powerful? We still don't know who are their leutenants and how many of them there are. We still don't know if spiderpeople and dark elves are neutral or not. Are minor beastkin tribes who are not in def pact going to cause trouble? What strategic points can we take for our allies? We haven't even seen the map of the continent.
>>
>>3174321
>>3174328
How about I don’t want to play fantasy business manager quest, and I’d like to just get back to the actual mission, that fine?
>>
>>3174328
>health potions aren't cost effective.
Correct. Intersection-made anything is extremely expensive, and we'd be wanting to be making a profit on top of that.
>Ideally we'd bring someone else that will take Izumi's place as our fighting partner so she can heal as many people as she wants.
So completely change the parameters of the contract?

You all realize this brilliant scheme relies on them being willing and able to pay for such services? Izumi can't take a pay cut (she's strapped for cash as it is), so you're looking at least another ~12 LMotes, assuming we can find a replacement. Lori, the techies, Mono, and the robots aren't a frontline fighters. Which means sub-contracting, which will take time and extra expense, making it even more unpalatable.
>>
>>3174351
No, it's not, because that goes against how Miranda has worked in the past to find and acquire secondary contract objectives that the client didn't originally put into the contract, and to add riders to the contract when the client appeared to want to make changes to the deal.
>>
>>3174267
We're not here to close deals, we're here to beat the snot out of a shadow king.

If you want to fuck around with contracts and close deals, wait until tomorrow and do it in h&d, tstg always puts the plot on halt when someone tries to start a new business venture.

I like this quest better when people aren't trying to change it into upstart tycoon to play out their Jewish fantasies. It was bad enough when some guy wouldn't stop pushing for turning the intersection parts into a management sim. I bet that was you too
>>
>>3174321
In front of everyone? I don't think the people can wait after all they people here have healling magic. They might prefere it. But asking is if he wants is fair.

Saying that charging people in need is a scummy thing and Izumi might not like it because it wounds her ideal of helping others without expecting payment back.

>>3174328
Well sure we can always ask but wouldn't that wound Izumi in some way since she would be taking more money from people in need while she could herself do it?

I say let her have her white knight moment as we get a briefing about the place and once we are done we tell her we are moving or she explains the prince about the soldier situation then he makes the decision if he wants to stay in the keep healling everyone while the ritual people can easily do that. Or grab the man that can fight and advance to link up with other forces.
>>
They already have their own healers. Even if we do it faster we won't replace a field hospital and they are not going to pay us for healing every boo boo if they can easily do it for free. We were summoned to do something that they can not, so stop this 'le war profiteer' bulshit.
>>
>>3174348
To add to this. We don't even know what the dark lord is. As far as i can figure out this shadow things seen like construct made of shadows.
>>
>>3174370
I like this quest better when people who don't want to think or do anything except smash aren't in it.

Miranda has always looked to make an extra mote when an opportunity presents itself, even as far back as the Moon Knights and acquiring the artifacts.
>>
>>3174369
In the past we've persued goals if we stuble across them and they happen to be in line with what we're already doing. We've never been a Dealmaker, and we've especially never spun up a second contract for a perceived need for services we don't directly offer.
>>
>>3174351
then heed to >>3174240's advice, fuck off and don't pay attention to these posts. Either way they don't detract from the quest because right not is not being updated.

>>3174348
uh-huh. and your point is...? Because we don't need most of that information most of the time, just targets that need to be mowed down and so far it has done wonders in most of the missions we have been.

>>3174367
>So completely change the parameters of the contract?
We would be adding an extra clause to the contract, not editing the original.

>You all realize this brilliant scheme relies on them being willing and able to pay for such services? [...] Which means sub-contracting, which will take time and extra expense, making it even more unpalatable.
we have Cylica and Mono who as you say isn't a frontline fighter, her AoE abilities can shine here. We also have to train the rookies so they can get better jobs. And as you say, this does depend on the prince's willingness to pay.

>>3174371
>Well sure we can always ask but wouldn't that wound Izumi in some way since she would be taking more money from people in need while she could herself do it?
maybe a little bit, but why should it? we would be formalizing her healing operation, relieving her from using mana to fight and redirect it to healing, so instead of her being forced to heal a few people here and there and make some hard choices, she can heal as many as she can. it does sound shitty, but working for free is worse.
>>
>>3174397
I have a middle ground...we can let Izumi do her thing and once she explains the situation here abou the troops we bump in and explain that there will probably be more situations like this from here but we would be severely debilitated in attack power if we do so.

So then we offer to change the contract to get the medical treatment. Izumi does her thing, the prince now knows what we can do and realize that if two people who aren't specialized to heal did so much one specialized healer might be what he needs.
>>
>>3174370
You are talking about 3 paragraph autistic post when we got back from 'Summon tournament' job? Uh...hi
>>
>>3174397
The difference here is that the artifacts were on the same plane of reality and we could steal them from bad guys without paying for them and without a major time investment. For the healing, we have to check to see if Lorelei isn’t working, then bring her here and share our pay, or we buy up a bunch of healing items and pay out the ass, then send them here with a courier and pay them for the delivery. And frankly, fuck that.

>>3174421
Too late for that. We’ve had arguments about axes, you think this wouldn’t get thrown back and forth?
>>
>>3174421
>maybe a little bit, but why should it?

Same reason why she disliked to work for the mafia group in the artificer world. Even if she wasn't doing a enforcer job and just collecting or searching a ruin.

She is a girl who believes in self-sacrifice and that you shouldn't take advantage of a person. Of course she gets motes to do the job, but that is a equivalent exchange. Trying to get more money from people in this situation would make her feel bad.
>>
>>3174406
In the past the client in front of us wasn't so interested in a service that one of our co-workers is just dying to offer to them for free.
In each situation where Miranda came across a secondary objective that she could fulfill while doing the same primary objective, she's taken the opportunity to inform the client about it to see if she could get paid again.

So this would be the same as coming across the Artifacts while completing the contract for the Moon Knights, since the artifacts weren't even mentioned until we brought it up with them; just like how we'd be bringing up the potential of healing services from Izumi, which she obviously wants to provide and the Prince would like to have.

>>3174430
It's not much of a middle ground since the other side doesn't want to offer a deal at all.

However, the offer would have to be bring in someone to replace Izumi as our fighting partner if the prince wants Izumi's healing powers, and that it would be an additional full share's worth so that Izumi and Miranda don't lose out on any motes.

>>3174441
Again, what the fuck are you talking about?
We can have someone come in to swap out with Izumi so she can heal people full-time, and the Prince would pay another full share because it'd be a supplemental contract. We wouldn't be getting a pay cut of any kind.

And even if it was just a delivery of potions, every deal offered had the Prince paying for the potions and for transport, with us taking a cut, so there'd be absolutely no reduction in our pay.
What the fuck gives you the idea that any of the deals on offer would reduce our pay?
>>
>>3174437
At least it's less autistic then the bleach on the spaghetti.
>>
>However, the offer would have to be bring in someone to replace Izumi as our fighting partner if the prince wants Izumi's healing powers, and that it would be an additional full share's worth so that Izumi and Miranda don't lose out on any motes

Sounds to scummy to me. I would and will be against such action.
>>
>>3174451
Sure. But she can't heal and fight at the same time. As fast as she is, she can't be in two places at once, so she'd have to decide between fighting to end the war faster, or stopping to heal soldiers and civilians along the way.
So if she wants to have both things happen, the war to end quicker AND for her to be able to heal people, then getting a third Outgoer is really the only choice.
Explaining it to her in that way should mollify her feelings on the matter.

And the Prince himself said that they've got plenty of money and nothing to spend it on except summons. They're not hurting for money right now.
>>
>>3174471
It's the most logical method if the Prince wants to end the war quicker and still have someone healing. How is it scummy when Izumi can't create a double of herself so that one fights and the other stays behind to heal?

The Prince wants something that requires 3 people and only has 2, so we offer him a way to get a 3rd person so he gets everything he wants. Why is that scummy?
>>
>>3174441
i mean, the one that is getting frustrated about a hypothetical scenario that at worst won't matter and at best will give us an extra ~12 Lmotes is you. I was just pointing the most simple solution to your problem.

>>3174430
I think this already was more or less the general idea.

>>3174451
>Same reason why she disliked to work for the mafia group in the artificer world. Even if she wasn't doing a enforcer job and just collecting or searching a ruin.
But she was angry because she was helping a mafia, which had no qualms into forcing the government to do their bidding. its a very different situation from the one we have here.

>Trying to get more money from people in this situation would make her feel bad.
the problem is that she can try to heal as many people as she wants, but she is deliberately gimping herself and risking the main mission(which would fuck the people more and us) if she does it for free. Also the money is already at the royal coffers and if we win, most of the riches of the evil overlord will return to the people and the economy will be able to restart because they will have less problems to worry about.

>>3174471
why? Izumi gets to heal people, the contract keeps going as if nothing had happened and we gain a little bit more of motes on the way.
>>
>>3174397
Fantastic retort, I'm impressed.

>>3174437
No, before that. After we got Jago and Prima I think, or maybe even the one before that. They spent days trying to find business avenues and wanting to hire NPC's to work for us. Outgoers, secretaries, HR, storefront clerks, salesmen, the whole shebang.
>>
>>3174471
Yea, the whole idea is stupid for a number of reasons

>>3174484
see
>It's not much of a middle ground since the other side doesn't want to offer a deal at all.
>>
>>3174483
Because it involves taking money from people in need while we can offer for free. Self sacrifice and all that heroism cool-aid that Izumi is all about.

>>3174474
We are not figthing right now and the prince will have to learn to manager the forces he has. That is the sad thing about the war you need to make though choices.

Besides we are doing here mostly to make her feel good anyway so charging more will be to much. If the prince wants someone to fight or heal he will have to pick were he wants Izumi to do it. Knowing that his people have the ritual healers.
>>
>>3174493
If anything, you're exactly the kind of thinking that Miranda is mad at herself about, for having spent 90 years at the intersection paying double for groceries and an untold amount of extra on everything else.
>>
>>3174471
Agreed. In character, it’s gross and scummy even for Miranda. Out of character, it’s boring to focus on.
>>
>>3174461
I guess since our lesbian duo from Crystaltech fliers world can be considered decent pilots.
I was more interested in what anons think in the long term about our Outgoers outfit.

>>3174493
Huh, okay.
>>
>>3174484
As far as i understood you two were offering in heal the people in the keep a offer to wait another person to come here remembering it took one hole day for us to arrive here in a horse and the other members might not be that fast.

Healling the people here without charging and then making the prince realize that we can't keep healling and attacking is another thing.

Besides he can refuse either contract and in one we look scummy for trying to take the people in the keep as hostages for money and the other we help but say that there is a better solution so he can take it.
>>
>>3174497
So you want Izumi to intentionally make hard choices and choose between healing people suffering in front of her or ending the war quicker, instead of just getting another person so that the choice doesn't have to be made?

That really sounds like you want people to suffer even if they can pay to get rid of the suffering just because they have to pay money instead of getting it for free.
>>
>>3174510
>In character, it’s gross and scummy even for Miranda
Miranda kills kids for money.
As long as their souls aren't damaged, she won't blink an eye to exterminate an entire town. Which Handler has said she has done before. Did you forget that?
>>
>>3174504
>for having spent 90 years at the intersection paying double for groceries and an untold amount of extra on everything else.
That was an oversight on our part by not RTFM and trusting Sal, which has nothing to do with on-site work. At all.
>>
>>3174493
Geez that sounds boring...
>>
>>3174497
>Because it involves taking money from people in need while we can offer for free.
Except it has been said that the kingdom can't use the money for whatever reason unless its for summons.

>>3174510
so you'd be in favor of not healing that many people instead, while at the same time risking our mana pools and forcing us to use less spells? Because we know that izumi won't stop healing until she reaches dangerous mana levels which will fuck the main mission of killing the greater evil.

>>3174521
>As far as i understood you two were offering in heal the people in the keep a offer to wait another person to come here remembering it took one hole day for us to arrive here in a horse and the other members might not be that fast.
No. How i see it is that we (Supposing the contract is made) Leave izumi here, heal as many people as she can(or the most wounded or whatever) then she moves to another place and does the same shtick. Izumi will continue to do this until her contract is done. Meanwhile we get a new partner that can arrive wherever we are(because sal is the one that teleport us; the ritual does jackshit and only is for looks.) and we continue as if nothing had happened.
>>
>>3174541
I'll give them a little credit, it could be fun in a quest build around it, but not shoe-horned into one about a dimension hopping merc bruiser. Plus it would take a lot more work on the backend for Handler in balancing an economy. See Hive Queen Quest for a sample/
>>
>>3174523
Okay if you can't realize that making a offer like that while people are hurt and suffering isn't scummy i will drop the discussion.

Yes it would end faster and we would need there will be other fronts. This is a entire continent/country after all. There will be other battles people will get hurt.

Basicaly offer the first time free explaing to the prince we can't do that every time without endangering ourselfs as well as him and the mission and make the offer.

You still offer the healling package and look less scummy for offering to alter the deal.

>>3174534
And we picked this contract because we want Izumi to feel better about herself.
>>
>>3174549
Agreed.

>>3174548
Yeah sorry i'm done with this discussion.
>>
>>3174536
Then in terms of on-site work, we took an artifact back to the Moon Knights, asked them about it, and when they said they'd pay for it, accepted secondary objectives to get the others. In the Frontier, we essentially strongarmed the client into accepting Limited Collateral Damage Riders when we realized he didn't want everyone dead, even though that wasn't specified in the original contract.

We have taken secondary objectives or means of making money if they're right in front of us and don't require us to deviate, which is asking the Prince if he wants to get a third person so that he doesn't have to compromise his war effort and healing the wounded.
>>
>>3174548
I am under impression that teleporting between dimensions is not free and in fact quite costly. The thing is it is Sal who pays for it, which is why he is ass-mad each time someone fails a job.
>>
>>3174553
Okay, first, yes, if we stop Izumi from healing people at all, then it would be scummy.
But we're not.
None of the offered plans stop Izumi from healing people.

They are all either during or post-Izumi healing, and have all been couched in terms of "Hey Prince, we could get another healer/get you a shipment of healing potions/swap out someone so that Izumi can do your healing full-time, if you want to pay for it."
None of the deals that were suggested or discussed cut off the opportunity for Izumi to provide healing; every single one offered ADDITIONAL healing.
So I feel that you are arguing against a problem that we all worked to avoid.
>>
>>3174504
Not asking for discounts is not the same as nickle and diming clients. Adding extra riders or demanding payment for extra service is fine, it's something she can do herself. You're trying to get sal and someone else involved for a few motes. If you can't see how this is different from telling someone that the collateral damage rider is a flat 25% fee you're a lost cause.

Plus it's excruciatingly boring to read and talk about. All we have to do is say "we can heal others but it will cost you" and that's it. But no, you have to walk that extra mile in fucking seven league boots full steam ahead and argue with everyone every step of the way
>>
>>3174571
Sure whatever.
>>
>>3174568
Yes, as Handler has said, being moved between timelines is not cheap.
That would be why every deal mentioned so far has the Prince paying extra for stuff, so that we're not losing motes.
>>
What the fug
>>
>>3174568
uh-huh. That's why the cost for this third person would be ~12 Lmotes which is what miranda and Izumi would get from the mission. Probably it might be more, because it seems that the number we see is the final cut after sal takes his part, but we can always increase the amount of motes the third person would cost.

>>3174571
Now that i think about it, this whole squabble with that anon might be a communication problem or a language barrier problem. and he seems to be frustrated, so you are basically hitting a wall right now

>>3174596

>>
>>3174600
Yeah i guess...thanks.
>>
>>3174614
I mean it's not like we are doing or trying to become a major outgoer group. If we were Sal wouldn't be to stingy with how many people we can add to our group.
>>
>>3174621
I think Sal being Stingy RE: new recruits is mostly to avoid bringing every gods-damned character we meet back with us pokemon style.
>>
>>3174621
but that was a self imposed restriction because we the players don't want to deal with so many characters. Sal had nothing to do with it.
>>
>>3174600
The way he laid how it's scummy for us to try to get the Prince to pay for additional healing, that all healing has to be free, even additional healing that would have to be imported from the Intersection, does make him appear to want people to suffer if their healing isn't at the cost of the person providing the healing.
>>
>>3174600

I think RE: intersection healing he meant the upfront cost of purchasing healing goods for resell was inefficient and upfront on our end.
It's mostly icky because Izumi wants to be a good samaritan and we'd be actively impeding her.
- and yea what >>3174639 said/linked
>>
>>3174639
yeah, but their healing takes hours for minor wounds. just look at it >>3171639
>"Depends on the depths of his injuries,” Gavault says easily. “Just the cuts, a matter of hours. Anything else, could be through the night.”
Meanwhile not only we can do the same thing in matter of seconds but izumi is way faster than them. So in short, we definitely wont replace a field hospital, but Izumi will be able to save the most wounded ones that their medics can't because of distance or time.

>>3174652
huh. i'll check on that later on.
>>
>>3174629
I think it was an agreement all around. Character bloat can be a real issue. (FMMDAMGQ has a serious issue with adding whole groups of characters when the QM gets bored, for instance) It's a scale, you trade character depth for character count as more characters are introduced and have to fight for screen time. Fewer, better developed characters are always better.

>>3174628
I'd bet that's also part of it.
>>
>>3174663
I know that and i'm not arguing that; it would be very hard for handler to juggle so many characters. The point that i want to say is that sal never told us to restrict our numbers; we were the ones that decided to not get extra people because of character bloat.
>>
>>3174639
>>3174652
How quickly we can get soldiers back into the field when there's still a full-on war is pretty important, since they still require days for heavy injuries, and Izumi can create a healing field to heal multiple people at once instead of the one-on-one healing rituals of the locals or of Miranda's own healing.

She can definitely do a field hospital's worth of injured while around, especially if she stays hooked up to a mana condenser. And especially save people that have lethal injuries that the local rituals would take too long to save.

Yeah, the Prince will want the normal injured to use local medical resources, but getting soldiers back on the field in hours instead of days, is still something that would be valuable in the middle of a war.
>>
>>3174684
That Izumi could heal them faster than their own mages isn't really the question here, it's if we want to send Izumi to be a nurse instead of a demon hunter.
She'll want to heal those infront of her because it feels good, but I don't think she'd be down to ignore the war to improve her bedside manner.
>>
>>3174822
And offering the Prince a choice to purchase medical assistance through us, if he accepts, gives Izumi the choice to choose one or the other without compromising. She can choose to be a doctor without feeling guilty that the war will go on longer than it has to, or she can go be a demon-army-destroying angel without feeling bad about leaving wounded civilians behind.

And if the Prince doesn't want to pay, then Izumi can still do some healing as we go along, same as we would have done before.
>>
>>3174822
Quit engaging with him, he doesn't know when to quit.
>>
>>3174370
> If you want to fuck around with contracts and close deals,

That's like, half the quest. We work for a Dealmaker as middle management FFS.

We're here to get paid, not for anything else. Unless you want to get obliterated at tax time for not being able to pay our dues.

This is a huge part of the setting and narrative structure, why would you just toss that out the window.
>>
>>3174886
Why don't we just ask the individual soldiers to donate to the cause. That way it's not an official contract, people will stop bitching about Izumi being a bleeding heart (like we haven't spent significant effort to get her to pull her own weight instead of underperforming constantly, guess that was a huge waste of time).
>>
>>3175258
How about we ask Izumi how she wants to handle this? It is her talent, her mana, her time and her job.
The stupid part about all this scheming that anons were arguing about is that they want to force her to be a background healslut and cash in on it while gimping ourself from having two badass demonslayers. And then they fucking propose that our B-rankers need to call for backup on a C-rank job so we can get some pocket change from made up secondary objective by means that are neither time- nor cost-effective.
>>
I hope that Handler will be able to run for longer today.
>>
>>3175296
Man I just want to remind her that she can and should be charging for these things.

And that if she feels bad about that, she should ask people to donate what they can if they can instead. Let them decide the price after getting healed.

I just figured it would be easier to have the Pribce handle that sort of thing, logistically.

I'm okay with mentioning to the Prince that, if say someone important gets hurt/sick and they're willing to spend the dosh Sal could hook them up with a specialized healer and I assume wmhe would handle all that and we might get some motes from a "finders fee" randomly later.

We ARE middle management. Setting these things up is also our responsibility now, to be fair.>>3175296
>>
>>3175346
Can we agree that middle ground of these 3 pages of arguing would be:
Subtly warning Izumi that while healing troops is nice and all but ultimately does not solve our Primary objective (she's a smart girl so she should know time and place for such things already without us nagging)
Tell Prince that if it we find someone in need of help and deem them worthy then we can do it for free if it is to aid us with completing our Primary objective, otherwise we need favors (money, curios, books, tehniques).
>>
>>3175406
> Tell Prince that if it we find someone in need of help and deem them worthy then we can do it for free if it is to aid us with completing our Primary objective, otherwise we need favors (money, curios, books, tehniques).

I would like to say that we would appreciate donations for people we heal, but we'll do it for free if it's urgent/Can't be otherwise treated AND it contributes to our mission.

Otherwise if he wants us to heal people it'll cost, and that if he wants to we can set them up with an emergency healer contract for future issues if they need it.

Alternatively at the end of the contract we could stay a bit train their healers to be more effective. For money. A lot of money, since we won't be able to sell them healing later.
