‘I doubt even a KanMusu would turn without reason,’ you comment coolly.

The submarine glares up at you.

You wonder why.

‘Your hand.’

You blink … and observe that your palm had, oddly, found its place on top of her head, giving it a rub. Through the Kantai Steel, you feel that her pink locks had probably seen better days. While not quite what you’d discount as brittle, seeing Samidare and even Shigure give their own tresses delicate bouts of maintenance had qualified you to give your judgment on the matter … and much to your surprise, you find that as fluffy as it appeared to have been before, it is at the present as comparable to your own olden days skipping a weekend’s worth of showering and lazing on the floor watching whatever show or marathon popped up on the television.

Still, a glaring submarine-class KanMusu was never good news.

You move your hand away.

‘Sorry, a little bit of a … subconscious reaction on my part,’ you apologize, wearing a slight grimace and rubbing the back of your neck. She doesn’t give an immediate reply, however, placing both of her own hands on her head and giving it an enigmatic tussle of her own as if trying to get whatever germs that you’d deposited onto her strands of pink through your unwarranted form of contact.

‘This and that,’ she chides, wrinkling her nose. ‘I don’t know how you could even blur that line.’

You frown. What line?

‘What line?’

‘KanMusu aren’t human and humans aren’t KanMusu,’ Goya grumbles, sticking her tongue out and running her hands through her hair some more. ‘You talk about it so coolly … but you’re trying to correlate two modes of behavior that can’t be reconciled at all.’

Seemingly satisfied, she puts her hands down by her side.

‘Simulation and ingrained naturalistic tendencies aren’t two things that you should give the same considerations.’

You stare down at her, rubbing the fabric of your eyepatch.

‘You wouldn’t correlate irrationality as a common factor of two different bodies?’

‘You would?’

‘If that wasn’t the case,’ you continue, ‘then you wouldn’t exist and Shiratsuyu wouldn’t have rebelled.’

She bares her fangs, as if ready to strike.

She simmers. It’s not a boil or an eruption, but her glare tells you enough to keep your silence and wait for her to stay her piece. As much as you wanted to gamble that she wouldn’t jump on the train towards physical hurt, you didn’t want to destroy the last ten minutes of goodwill that you had (assumed to have) built. Ticks and seconds go by … and you’re greeted by a huff of breath and a cross of the arms as she turns her nose up to you and takes a step back, muttering incomprehensible utterances and matching it with the grinding of frustrated molars. Goya lets out an unsatisfactory hum, before finally turning to face you, her glare laced with all the venom and irritation she intended to communicate.

‘Fine, fine,’ she concedes, a tone of reluctance to her voice. ‘You got a point there … not that it means nothing, though.’

You want to point out that her concession did mean something … but at this point, being stupid with what you had to say was something that would warrant an effect that you’d rather not be grasped by. Goya seems almost personable at this point, even if she hadn’t quite warmed up to you, or you her, for that matter. At the very least the both of you could hold a conversation.

‘Abnormalities can be counted for the norm after a certain test threshold’s reached, right?’ you go on, raising your hands. ‘Not saying that you don’t have a point, but if we’re going to go one for one, the existence of the Hunter’s Lodge makes that abnormality enough of an occurrence to warrant enforcement.’

‘I already said I agreed with you,’ Goya grumbles, wrinkling her nose. ‘You wanna rub it in or something?’

Maybe KanMusu really were abrasive to strangers or off the clock.

Or maybe you just rubbed them the wrong way.

‘I’m just going back to … Shiratsuyu, right? She went rogue, leveled a cliff face and all that,’ you pause, ‘but if I’m going to pick a point out by those abnormalities, I think a more comprehensive explanation would help my position … and yours.’

She glares at you again.

Maybe you were just subtlety’s worst student.

‘Okay, fine, I can word that a little better,’ you backtrack, almost stuttering. ‘You said that she rebelled, right? What caused her to—’

‘You’re asking the wrong person for the why,’ Goya snorts, placing her hands on her hips. ‘None of us were told why we had to bring her in … just that we had to. She put up a Hell of a fight the second time, though. Blew half of I-8’s skull right off. Lucky.’

‘What happened the first time?’

Considering that you don’t expect a serious answer at all … the fact that she considers your inquiry enough to stroke her chin in thought has you pleasantly surprised.

‘I can’t give you anymore than a timeline,’ Goya starts, albeit a little slowly, ‘but the alert sounded off about six months into her summoning … that’d key it to about three years back. Taigei doesn’t let anything go out unless it’s on a need to know, even under Hunter’s Lodge business. This was back when the second Grand Lieutenant was in charge … before the Yokosuka Vice-Admiral took his place about last year. Admiralty was in a period of transition between the Court and the active Admirals running the theater … didn’t know who was in charge of what, so maybe that was why Taigei decided that all we needed to know was that we were hunting down another rogue.’

‘Just another day at the office, huh?’

Goya snorts.

Hardly,’ she scoffs, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. ‘Contrary to what you think, we don’t go about kicking KanMusu in the back of the head for kicks.’

You beg to differ on that point.

However … it wouldn’t be professional or intelligent on your behalf to interject a Submarine who wouldn’t otherwise be bothered in sharing this story at all. You hold your tongue and keep your chin still, more keen to get the story out of her more than to argue a perspective that was frivolous in structure and purpose anyway.

‘It was out of the ordinary, though?’

She snorts again. ‘A rogue KanMusu isn’t exactly a frequent occurrence … but you’ve probably been lectured that there’s no exact underline to behavioral science there, so I won’t waste time arguing the nuances again.’

You can’t help but chuckle at that.

‘Fair enough.’

‘Circumstances aside, a three-man unit was deployed, Iku, Maru-Yu and me … retrieval and second level engagement rules pending submission vetoes. She wasn’t heading to any population center at the time … but she definitely was making a break of controlled water and observed zones, so we guessed that evasion was her priority instead of trying to instigate anything that’d get her banished.’

You frown, confused.

‘Wait, she wasn’t going to be banished?’

Goya opens her mouth … before briefly hesitating.

‘The Shamans and the Admiralty aren’t as trigger happy as you think, you know … a war asset’s still on the line here. As bad as things get, the Admiralty isn’t unreasonable when it comes down to it. I mean … you’re still here, aren’t you?’

You wince. She wasn’t wrong about that, no.

‘In any case, it wasn’t that bad the first time around,’ she continues. ‘Didn’t put up much of a fight and we even got Shigure back in one piece.’

Shigure?

‘Oh, right, I remember now. She kidnapped Shigure, too.'

You don’t even bother with it.

‘You know what,’ you start, a low, exasperated … and resigned drawl leaving your lips, ‘I’m not even going to say it; please … do go on.

‘She took a deactivated KanMusu out on the chase, so that made things a little harder for us on retrieval duties … you don’t want to go back to a stack of paper you really don’t want to bother with, you know? One missing arm, one cracked core and whole departments come down on you like you did something wrong … so we had to manage. She was down and out within two hours. Didn’t put up much of a fight … I think the worst we got were broken nails and a lazy eye.’

‘That doesn’t sound bad at all, yeah.’

She snorts again. ‘I won’t argue with you there,’ she says, in surprising agreement. ‘Don’t think I could take being …’

Goya pauses, before raising her hands, palm first, and starts making odd fanning gestures that looked like a mime doing a high speed wall climb with two feet planted on the ground. She continues this odd gesture for five seconds … which quickly turn into ten seconds, and then twelve, with her features going from their usual tan to an exasperated pink, followed by a maroon and …

‘Urgh, you know … uh … it’s right there at the tip of my tongue! When you, uh, you know … feel … uh … when there’s too much on your plate?’

You almost snicker. Looking at her now, she’s practically indistinguishable from a middle school girl.

Overwhelmed,’ you supply, trying to be as helpful as possible, ‘that’s the word that you’re looking for: overwhelmed.

She scrunches her nose, before giving a small squeak and a nod.

‘Yeah … that,’ she returns, crossing her arms. ‘I mean, a broken arm or a missing intestine trail you can just grow right back after a dip if you have enough intact, but I’d really rather not tackle an inquiry by any external departments … especially not with Taigei already giving explicit commands. You probably know how that feels, yeah?’

You consider the comparison of imposition.

You most certainly would not prefer your innards splayed across the ground or another arm broken in lieu of a stack of paperwork … but contrasting the differences of perspectives between you and the average KanMusu, you suppose that their position on the matter would definitely hearken to a preference of a loss of a limb or organ they could rebuild like some block and brick toy. You could see where she was coming from. In fact, you could almost hear Akashi willingly eviscerating herself if it meant that you would come back without another stack of work for her to sort through.

It was quite comical how literal KanMusu could take things sometimes, considering their intellect.

‘Yeah,’ you agree.

Another nod.

It appears that you’ve gained at least some measure of tolerance for one another. An achievement, to be sure.

‘Anyway,’ she goes on, ‘Shiratsuyu didn’t put up much of a fight the first time. Some exchanges, but nothing to write back or dock in for. We were all prepped up for the next assignment by the next day. Taigei gave us all our pat on the back and Shigure was—’

It hits you again.

‘Sorry, but … can you explain how Shigure was involved in all this?’

Goya frowns, uncrossing her arms and scratching the side of her head. You wait on her response, keeping your silence and unwilling to hurry her into a dead-end of irritation. It takes her about half a minute to at least snag something relevant … and another half for her to string it into a structured, communicable sentence.

‘I don’t know.’

You sigh. So much for that.

‘Could’ve been because the psych and development unit wasn’t proceeding so well, I think,’ she continues, humming in thought. ‘That girl’s always been an outlier … a lot of the Shiratsuyu Class Destroyers kept falling into the green box, so if anything, it probably had to do with that. Shigure was just the worst case of the lot.’

Green box?’

Goya scratches her chin.

‘You know … well, it’s got a more scientific name … Sentience-Awareness Overlap.’

You frown, blurting, ‘What’s that?

She rolls her eyes, licking her upper lip.

‘You know … a sum total of responses that break the threshold?

‘Can you dumb it down for me a little bit more, please?’

She wrinkles her brows. ‘Dumb what down?’

‘You mentioned the blue—I mean, you mentioned the green box. Would you mind cutting it up into smaller pieces for me?’

Her expression turns to one of incredulity, baring her fangs as she stares at you as though you’d asked her what was between your ears.

‘Wait, you mean you don’t know?

‘No,’ you answer neutrally, mustering as much honesty as you can manage into that simple word. Goya considers you for a moment, her expression of incredulity morphing into one of apprehension; you don’t know what this “Green Box” is to spur such a change, but considering how she’d explained it, she must have assumed (mistakenly) that you’d followed through on the word and its context. It must have been quite an obvious reach if she thought that you had at least a basic graft on the matter at hand.

‘For someone that’s all feelings and cuddles with his Command, I thought that you’d have that much drilled into your head,’ she snorts out, turning up her nose to you once more. Despite your inclination to reach for a counter, you find that you’d grown much too much a stick of tolerance to ignore rightful reactive responses … and thus do not rise to it.

‘It might come to me again,’ you answer nonchalantly. ‘If you think I’m the sort that—’

‘I mean, you’re all hugs and encouragement with your Division … and you don’t even know what green box is?’

You shrug. ‘Not a clue.’

She peers at you curiously … before slumping her shoulders.

‘Humans simulate response matrices based of a mix of psychological, behavioral melding points and certain chemical and physiological input vectors from your body, right? Endorphin, dopamine, whatever, right? Hormones and all that jazz.’

You nod. For some reason you can see her marching up and down a lecture hall with a pointer and a lab coat on her back saying those words.

‘Well, our bodies are made in the mold of humans, but our control scheme is a lot more hands-on due to the nature of our biological and spiritual structure. Certain things are installed as a response and certain things are taught. For example, when you get a finger ripped off, you register that as pain and when an order is vague and abnormal, you write in reluctance or hesitance. Things like that.’

You nod. You had a vague picture of it. Was that why she thought it should have been so obvious to you?

‘I can get the gist of it. So the green box is basically installing emotional responses—’

‘No,’ she cuts in, jabbing you in the chest. ‘The green box is the overlap of human behavioral responses and KanMusu. Or rather than an overlap, I guess you can register it as a threshold.’

‘I get the gist of it,’ you state, prompting her to go on with a small nod, ‘go on.’

At your prompt, however, the Submarine pauses, adopting a thoughtful stance.

‘Well, I don’t know how she’s actually like and it’s not like I care,’ she starts again, taking a slow drawl, ‘but from what I heard in and around the gossip mill, she’s not exactly the easiest one to get along with. I picked up things like unstable and irrational being thrown around … not that I should be, considering how that bunch is like.’

‘Shiratsuyu or Shigure?’

She pauses again.

‘I think you could make a case for both,’ she answers. ‘Like I said, I don’t know the full details, but the Shiratsuyu-Class Destroyer Units have always been a little weird in the head. Irrational, prone to abnormal tendencies out of a faulty simulation of behavioral mapping or something. I don’t care to dig any deeper than that, really.’

Your shoulders slump as you let out a sigh, feeling a little disappointed. That wasn’t much at all.

‘Is that all, then?’

Goya glares at you. Evidently not.

‘Of course not,’ she scoffs, tilting her nose up again. ‘Like I said, I don’t know why she was dragging Shigure with her and I don’t care … but if she brought Shigure out with her I can only suspect that it has something to do with that Class’s volatile tendencies.’

‘Such as?’

She glares at you again.

‘I don’t know. It’s not my job to know and I told you I could only pick up bits and pieces. Shiratsuyu was more concerned about taking her away from the conditioning and calibration centers and the psych units more than she was trying to get away herself, though, so I can only surmise how much of an impact Shigure’s condition had on her decision-making.’

You frown, trying to weigh what you’d been told … which admittedly, wasn’t much at all. It was like trying to scribble a formula down with a dull pencil and tissue paper. Connecting the dots would take a little bit more than vague pointers, as “helpful” as they were.

‘How’d you convince her to turn herself in then?’

Goya shrugs. ‘We told her that we wouldn’t hesitate to rip her in half and chalk Shigure off to a negligible loss when we found her.’

Your eyes practically bug out from their sockets. ‘You what?!

‘We weren’t, of course,’ Goya groans, rolling her eyes. ‘Whether we liked it or not they were both still intact combat assets. You think we would’ve followed through on that at all?’

Your discretion forbids you from so much as breathing on that consideration. To your relief, she takes this as a prompt to continue.

‘Anyway, if you wanna get all the clues down on that, I think all she wanted to do was get her sister out of there,’ Goya goes on, shrugging, ‘the idiot.’

‘How does Shigure factor into that, then?’

‘I already told you,’ she grumbles, turning her nose up and away from you. As much of a rapport you’d built, it probably wasn’t enough to keep her from peeling her skin of her arrogance. Still, you don’t try to antagonize her too much on that end. ‘The Shiratsuyu Class have always had problems keeping to the Green Box—’

‘You did?’

‘Of course I did!’ she fumes, raising her hands above her head and balling them into fists like an ape that had been denied its treat. She seems most displeased with your lack of … well, whatever it was she was getting it. Still, it doesn’t seem too bad; she hadn’t struck you yet, for one. ‘Behavioral abnormalities. Your girl’—you assume that she means Shigure this time—‘wasn’t conditioned for duty enough … probably. Maybe. That means that according to the study, she was breaking the overlap and subject to be re-conditioned. If you want to extrapolate it from that angle, then it probably has to do with Shiratsuyu not approving of the action undertaken to remedy that deficiency.’

Despite her words being wonky than a stilt on a giraffe, you’re able to—incredibly—catch everything.

‘Shigure wasn’t conforming to the prep,’ you state. ‘That would have been motivation, then?’

Could have been,’ Goya corrects you. ‘Like I said, she seemed more concerned keeping her sister safe and away than she was playing AWOL. I don’t know if it was her motivation for sure, but it’s not a bad place to start an assumption if you got one.’

Her eyes widen for a moment as silence befalls her … and she immediately buries her face in her hands, a high-pitched, yet muffled, squeak escaping form the crevasses between her fingers. You raise your hand to approach the smaller girl, uncertain at what had prompted such an action, but hesitant enough to let it linger about a foot and forty-five degrees from her head as the sounds of grunting and grumbling come right after, a sure sign of dissatisfaction … at whatever the situation was.

You thought you’d been getting along well enough, really, despite the circumstances.

WHY AM I EVEN TALKING TO YOU?! ARGH!

Or, perhaps, that was the issue.

You can’t help but chuckle, albeit behind a closed hand and from an extra foot away from your previous position. Goya fumes and stomps her feet, grasping her strands of hair like balled fists and letting out a cry akin to a dying mallard.

‘Don’t stop on account of me.’

She sneers right back at you.

‘So Shigure was a particularly severe case of abnormality in that overlap, huh?’

She harrumphs. ‘Don’t know, why don’t you ask her yourself? Or is her nut too hard for you to crack yourself?’

Despite the implications, you can’t help but chortle again.

‘I’m leaving,’ she declares crisply, turning on her heel.

You decide not to keep her from her … duties.

‘All right,’ you declare cheerfully, raising a hand to wave her off. ‘Be seeing you, Goya!’

She turns back to face you, marching right up to your face and jabbing the tip of your nose with an elongated finger, eyes red with fury and cheeks puffed in irritation. Despite her approach, however, you don’t feel the least bit … intimidated. An oddity, especially after she’d demonstrated that unlike her peers she wasn’t quite as afraid of the consequences of a physical approach. The finger presses hard against the skin of your nose, bringing you back down to the present … and face-to-face with a thoroughly pink Submarine.

Don’t act so familiar with me!’ she practically shouts, giving you a swift kick to the shins (accomplishing practically nothing but a slight feeling of realigned balance) before stomping away from you, heading down the empty street … and ducking behind another stack of discarded debris, disappearing completely from your sight.

Or rather, she would have, if that particular stack was enough to hide that springy cowlick of pink that jutted out just within view.

You let out a groan and rub the back of your neck as you look down towards the other end of the street. You still had time before the weekend bode a goodbye … might as well make the most of it.

DECHI!

You whirl around as the sound of falling cans and planks reach your ear … and you glance over your shoulder to see a red-faced Goya, a pail attached to her leg.

To your credit, you’re able to hold the laughter until the sound the pail dragging onto concrete fades down the alley.

Murakumo’s easy enough to find. The weekend is still in progress and the only place someone like Murakumo would be after a whole day of jumping and kicking and swinging metal armaments with her fellow KanMusu would be the one place she’d choose to unwind: namely, her quarters … which are, in the current moment, a right mess.

The KanMusu in question doesn’t fare any better.

‘Murakumo, what … in the world?

She is the sole inhabitant of the room. Her roommates nowhere to be found, she sits cross-legged in a pile of blankets and cushions with her eyes glued to the television, the digitization of the man that serves as her character avatar beeping and crackling as he jumps up and down to avoid obstacles. Murakumo’s eyes are wide and unblinking, so transfixed upon her current session that a hurricane would have laid an egg and she wouldn’t even care. The damage is out there for all to see: disheveled bed, underwear and paper bags on the floor, ribbons and strings hanging from an open cupboard … and a KanMusu that had apparently given up on all attempts at being fully-dressed for the sake of a high score.

Murakumo,’ you start; a low warning tone to your voice as you observe the engrossed KanMusu.

‘Oh, hey, sir.’

You blink. That had been rather … flippant.

This wasn’t like the Murakumo you knew at all.

She hadn’t even bothered to hook her bra on properly. The left side of her chest and one pink nipple is in plain sight, the hooks dangling from her shoulders and one strap hanging on for dear life around her neck. It wasn’t even fully down her front! Not to mention her lack of panties … neatly folded, of course, about two inches away from the cable to the box machine that had all of her attention. She’d deemed a towel that rested on her lap as enough of a deterrent to immodesty, wild blue curls of hair visible enough that she needn’t have bothered with the attempt at all. Even her hair isn’t done right; one ribbon tied around delicate tresses and the other nowhere to be found.

It’s simply an incredible sight.

‘Come on, come on, come on,’ she mutters, gritting her teeth and swinging the controller left and right … causing her bra to spin around with the motion like the leash of a collar without a handler, before falling to a rest. It doesn’t even phase her.

Murakumo.

‘Just a sec, Vice-Admiral!’

She rocks in her seated position. Her hands flail left to right, as if moving that controller would give her some leverage on the obstacle course on the screen. Tapping sounds fill the air as a small, holographic box lays on the floor, freshly opened on top of a worn video game magazine. You pick it up.

Ten.

Murakumo doesn’t react, eyes still glued to the screen. She doesn’t appear to take your threat seriously at all. Unfortunately for her, however, you had every intent to follow up on aforementioned threat. You scoot closer to the television set, careful not to kick over the pile of cartridges or the overturned basket that they had been housed in. The place is, for all intents and purposes, a mess that would make the lazy ass that you had once been bursting with pride. No reaction, no refocus of her attention; she still taps away and whirls the controller in her hands like a steering wheel, mumbling and grumbling with her tongue stuck out.

Nine.

In all honesty, however … you couldn’t exactly call her out on it. At least … not wholly. You’d lazed around on weekends and let yourself fall into the embrace of sloth, donning nothing more than a pair of boxers and a tank top as you caught the variety shows or caught up on magazine articles.

A simple life, to be sure.

Eight.

You take another step closer to the set, bending your knees slightly. It was an old model, and the cable was easy to find. You’re surprised how she had managed to jury-rig both electricity hogs into one socket and extension, however. You hadn’t seen that sort of ingenuity since you’d left your old workplace.

Seven.

You reach behind—

Wait, wait, wait!

She taps a button and drops the controller, staring up at you (finally) with an expression amounting to an annoyance that only a child could direct to a parent. You’re quite surprised by it yourself. You’d never thought that someone would ever throw you one of those.

‘What is it?’ she bites out irritably.

You grunt, gesturing towards her with your head. ‘Clothes?

Murakumo sticks out her outer lip, frowning, before peering down at her current state of dress. ‘You’ve seen me naked plenty of times before.’

You don’t break.

Fine,’ she huffs, getting to her feet and causing the towel to drop, revealing her rather messy patch of pubic hair. She’d let its disorder set in a little bit more than you’d expected … or preferred. Not that you thought about it that way, but considering how meticulous she was in her preparations, you would have thought it would extend to her own personal grooming; especially considering the fact that the mop on her head was in a pristine state.

She kicks the towel onto the bed (A wet towel, you note with distaste), following up with the toss of her bra, leaving her totally in the nude. A sight that you don’t care much for, either … at least until she reaches for her toes with her back towards you.

You wish Kaga hadn’t left without at least attending to that.

‘Vice-Admiral, you seen my hair tie?’

You look around; left, right, down. You shake your head and follow it up with a shrug, prompting her to morph her features into a scowl before dropping onto all fours and rummaging for where she thought would be the best chance for her to find—

‘Guess this’ll do!’

She produces a large t-shirt; at least two sizes too big for her lithe form, proceeding to don it like a large sack over her petite body. It’s so big that the head opening dangles from one shoulder.

You eye her warily.

What?’ she cries out, suddenly embarrassed.

‘I just wanted to tell you that,’ you pause for a moment, considering your words. ‘I think that you did a pretty good job yesterday. I think everyone benefited from it, really.’

Murakumo snorts, throwing a lock of hair behind her shoulder.

‘Probably not as much as you, though,’ she replies playfully, tapping you on the chest with one extended finger and throwing up a coy smile to match the tone. ‘Knocking down Tenryuu and Sendai’s like the demolition job you pulled … I gotta say that was worth all the trouble.’

‘I didn’t set out to humiliate them or anything, if that’s what you’re saying,’ you return, sounding apologetic. ‘It’s just … if I didn’t go all out, then I don’t think I would’ve been giving them the respect they deserved.’

‘You don’t think that they would’ve held back on you?’

‘It’s a bit different from your perspective, I guess,’ you answer with a shrug. ‘I mean, uh … if we’re talking physical advantages, I probably got a little bit of leeway from Tenryuu going in like that. If you guys were fully equipped, I would’ve probably be another crater on the beach.’

You mean that. Every word. Murakumo stares back at you, surprised. You couldn’t take all the credit beating Tenryuu the way you did. You’d counted on a myriad of factors to gain a decisive advantage and thus, a victory. You’d gambled; recalling her habits, her restrictions, the rules … you’d played the system to game yourself to the win. One step, one instant, one slide and a twist, it was all or nothing on that single strike, which, miraculously, leaned itself in your favor. Tenryuu had years, perhaps even decades of experience on you, right on top of her overpowering attributes. If there was one thing you’d learned growing up, though, was that if you didn’t bring the fight to them, if you didn’t seize your chances … you might as well not have stepped into that ring at all.

‘Probably,’ Murakumo concedes, albeit with a surprisingly reluctant voice. ‘Must’ve felt great bringing Sendai down a peg, though! She was still whining about it this morning.’

You frown, a little concerned. You didn’t mean for it to end up like that.

As if reading your mind, Murakumo throws up a dismissive wave. ‘Eh, don’t worry about that, yeah,’ she reassures you, wearing a small smile. ‘You probably did everyone a favor doing that …’

She trails off in a sudden manner, scratching your chin.

‘Although,’ she considers her words, continuing, ‘I guess it’d be best if you start watching your back.’

‘Why?’ you question, frowning.

‘Sendai,’ Murakumo starts again, stroking her chin. ‘She’s not exactly what you’d call graceful in defeat.’

She pauses again.

‘You know, I don’t think any of us are,’ she finishes, shrugging. ‘Probably how we’re built.’

‘No,’ you concur, hiding your amusement behind your mechanical fist. ‘You’re definitely not graceful in defeat at all.’

In response to your dig of an agreement, Murakumo gives your arm a light tap with her fist, wearing a tiny scowl. You weren’t wrong, though. If there was something that practically all your KanMusu had in common … it was an odd fixation with coming out on top (In almost every sense of the work, in fact). While you wouldn’t chalk it down to a mere desire to be top dog, you couldn’t deny that when it came down to it, it was hard to shake your girls off a chance to re-assess and re-approach a situation for the desire of a different, more favorable outcome. Maybe Murakumo had a point at the KanMusu being deliberately designed in such a manner; in a bout of further amusement, you think that perhaps your presence was there to temper that determinism into something more practical and … balanced.

Maybe.

‘Sir?’

You’re shaken from your reverie by Murakumo’s voice. Rubbing the back of your neck, you offer an apologetic grin to the frowning KanMusu.

‘Sorry, I was just thinking,’ you start, licking your lips … and wondering just how to proceed from here. ‘You might be onto something there. There’s a conviction that’s probably more inherent to KanMusu than humans … a tenacity. Not sure if it’s something that’s tempered or whatever, but from what I see, no, you’re not wrong about that at all. If you got bottles up on the market, I wouldn’t mind taking a few crates. I’d probably be a better person than I am today.’

‘Eh, you’re not bad,’ Murakumo replies, much to your surprise. ‘I mean, you’re a little odd, no, okay, a lot odder than the usual bunch that put their name in …’

That last part, however, was to be expected.

‘I know it’s kinda cliche at this point, but I kinda appreciate your approach,’ she continues, huffing and nodding. ‘You’re a little too soft sometimes and there are times I gotta remember that you probably didn’t come in her expecting a bunch of warship spirits talking down to you, but, uh … as far as my opinion goes, I, um … I like you. You’re not bad at all, really, as far as the barrel of fish goes.’

You throw a flat look her way.

She wears a guilty smile, shrugging again.

‘That’s a compliment, I guess …’

‘It is though,’ she giggles grinning widely. ‘Besides, you talk about being stubborn in defeat … I don’t think that you’re far off the mark either, you know?’

You chuckle.

‘Nice try, Murakumo,’ you return, raising your nose and placing your hands on your hips, ‘but the both of us know that that isn’t quite the truth.’

‘No, but it’s not that from it either, huh?’

You raise an eyebrow. When did she grow a tongue?

‘Good girl,’ you reply, tussling her hair in an almost reflexive manner. Murakumo puts up with it for all of three seconds before slapping your hand away and returning to that displeased scowl. She must have felt like a teenager getting her cheeks pinched at a reunion by now. ‘Now that we’ve gotten all that out of the way, I think it’s about time you exercised that KanMusu discipline and got yourself a head-start on this mess.’

You gesture to the hurricane zone that was her shared quarters, getting a growl and pair of pink cheeks in return.

‘I was gonna clean up, you know!’ she protests, raising her fists in a manner that wasn’t so much threatening as it is ineffectual.

‘Sure you were,’ you answer neutrally, nodding in a communication of sarcastic understanding. She could protest all she wanted; you’d been there and done that more times than you cared to count. If Murakumo had anything to back up against your previous weekend habits, she’d probably have to dig up the fossils of the sin of Sloth for herself. ‘Get to it, soldier.’

Murakumo gives you a brief glare, stomping her foot on the decades old floor and turning on her heel away … before—almost instantly—reverting to a more neutral gaze.

‘Oh, wait, I almost forgot!’

She dives into what you can only guess to be her stack of laundry, looking more like biohazard than it had any right to be.

You never sympathized with the parental figures in your life more than you did now.

Murakumo …

‘Here it is!’

She produces what looks to be a folded piece of green-colored paper, the edges frayed and the corners folded, as if it had been kept in a drawer for a long time and only recently brought back to knowledge. Murakumo unfolds it, revealing it to be not one but [i[two sheets of green-colored paper, fastened together with a staple that only loosely bonded the them together. You curiously peer at it, recognizing it to be a form of sorts, but not exactly sure where she had produced it from.

‘You need to sign this, by the way!’

She presents it to you.

You pinch the bridge of your nose, holding back a grumble of your own. Another permission slip? Another supervision overwrite? Honestly, you were fighting a war. There was no time for frivolities of this sort on a consistent basis. You take the sheets out of her hands anyway, curiously gazing at the (rather damaged) form, which had actually already been filled, top to bottom.

‘And just why,’ you begin coolly, ‘do I need to sign this?

Murakumo glares up at you again.

‘Gee, I’m just trying to do something nice for you, you know!’

‘For—’

It was a Special Requisition Form.

‘You helped out a lot,’ she says, quickly. ‘I think that … well, I think that should be enough, right? To help out?’
>>
You blink, watching the shuffling destroyer. You certainly didn’t expect anything in return. Helping Murakumo was just something you thought would benefit operations on the whole. KanMusu being more open to a mode of warfare that didn’t involve either fists or guns allowed for more options, more versatility; it was just something you’d thought was a neat idea.

‘How’d you—’

‘I asked around,’ Murakumo answers, giving a small, coy smile. ‘I mean, it’s not exactly for you, is it, but I thought … since you were doing your part so well, I … I thought that I’d give at least a little more just in case you went over expectations.’

You don’t know what to say.

So you make do.

‘Thanks, Murakumo,’ you say sincerely, going over the creased pages. ‘There’s only one requisition slot.’

‘Yeah,’ she grimaces. ‘There’s still a shortage on materials, so, uh … for now, they’ll only be able to fit something out for one KanMusu type. It’s up to you what you want to go with, though.’

‘The armory’s probably just going to need to prep it right back into an active states,’ Murakumo answers, flipping her hair behind her shoulder again. ‘I think the tech guys are keen on getting rid of their stock, too.’

That sets off more warnings than you’re comfortable with. ‘Wait, did I just sign over a permission slip to test gear?’

Of course not,’ the blue-haired Destroyer huffs, the collar dipping low enough to reveal a bare breast. ‘It’s all been tested; they just thought it was about time to off-load them for use!’

You cast a wary eye upon her once more. ‘And the reason none of this tech’s been approved until now?’

‘Do we look like we’re swimming in a bottomless budget, sir?’

You tilt your head, conceding the point.

She nods in satisfaction, placing her hands on her hips and raising her nose, claiming a victory.

‘Now that that’s done, I think I have some of my own business to attend to.’

She then places both of her hands on your diaphragm … and—literally—begins to push you, right towards the door. You practically slide against the ancient wood, a dead locomotive on the tracks being led into place by a more powerful model … one that takes the shape of a girl who could barely scratch the tip of your chin with the top of her head.

Embarrassing.

You couldn’t have said it better yourself.

In fact, you wish that certain thing had chosen not to say anything at all. It was doing so well throughout the day.

Not our fault you’re a weakling.

You grunt and huff out a protest, trying to steady yourself to a halt … only to re-discover the chasm of difference between KanMusu and the average human. She’s even able to open the door and force you out without much of a fuss, albeit not without the need to let out a grunt of her own. Ultimately, the opinion of a protracted presence had embedded itself too firmly in Murakumo’s mind to allow for you to linger for a moment longer.

You probably resembled a pair of siblings more than a chain of command.

‘I still want that room cleaned!’ you bark out, right as the door slams in your face.

A muffled sound comes from the other side of the door. You’re not sure whether it’s a yes or a no. It probably didn’t matter to Murakumo either.

Sometimes you wondered if an apron and a duster was a more fitting uniform for the job scope than the pair they’d issued.

A maternal role probably does suit you better.

You dare not comment.

You hop off the buggy and onto tarmac with one leap, dusting yourself off and waving a thankful goodbye to the driver. He doesn’t bother to throw one back, or even notice, revving up and going to wherever he was due next. You glance around, hoping for a glimpse of Nachi. Maybe you could have just waited for her to get back to talk with her, but for whatever reason, there was a sense of urgency that came upon you at the thought of her … not that you couldn’t keep her out of your head since that impromptu session in the showers. As much as the hot-blooded male in your clamored for a second round, the more thoughtful part had rather choice words for Nachi’s performance during that, admittedly, titillating encounter.

Maybe it was just the jock in you, but despite her enthusiasm and your heated climax, she wasn’t exactly a memorable … lay.

You bury your face in your hands at the thought. You didn’t mind if someone smacked the back of your head with a baseball bat at all; such nonsensical thoughts shouldn’t be plaguing your current state. You had someone to look for.

You wonder how Kaga and Houshou felt under your own inexperienced touch.

Your worry deepens.

Weren’t you here for something?

You shake your head. She was right. You couldn’t have been that bad.

To Nee-san’s credit, the guffaw is brief.

Arriving at the main building, you step inside to the sound of a barely-manned office floor, where the only faces you can make out are one Kawakaze and Kiyoshimo, who appeared to be playing table soccer with a folded piece of paper. There was a male staff member, but he only appeared to be there to clean out his desk, bent over and grumbling as he tried to drag what appears to be a box of his belongings. The heat, at the very least, had been given a serviceable boost. You didn’t find yourself running your hands up and down your arm this time, for example.

‘Where do we put these, Nachi-san?’

‘Eh, are those the Liaison’s details or—’

‘I dunno, I think they belong to Yuubari-san …’

You turn to your right to see Nachi with what looks like a trio of her cohorts: Shimakaze, who is off to one side staring blankly; Maya, who looks out of place with a stack of files on her lap as she had her hand on the wheels of her wheelchair and finally, Naganami, who had a small cardboard box in her hands. Nachi’s back is to you, and she peers right into the box in Naganami’s hands, her pony-tail bobbing as she appears to consider the next action.

‘Those must be a year old at least … is it part of the backlog or are they just meant to be stashed away?’

‘I dunno, but it’s got Yuubari’s name on ‘em too. Think she’d be happy?’

‘She can harp,’ Nachi sighs. ‘I can take a bullet or a shell, but that girl doesn’t let a grudge go. At all.’

‘So what do we do with it?’ Maya asks, peering at what you assumed to be Naganami’s general direction. ‘It is kinda old. If she wanted to bother with it at all, she would’ve have just dumped it in here, would she? What is it, anyway?’

‘Some old commission forms … but they’re authorized and unsigned. Must’ve been for the Vice-Admiral.’

‘Which one?’

‘You know the one I’m talking about,’ Naganami huffs, shifting her feet. ‘Thin face, mustache, no fun allowed.’

To your surprise, Nachi lets out a laugh. ‘That’s not funny,’ she reprimands, despite her slip; it’s a clumsy recovery, even for her. Even with her back turned to you, however, you could tell that she was smiling. ‘But to the issue … it doesn’t make them invalid either. They look like they belong in Yuubari’s inbox more than they do in here, though.’

‘I think there’s a sauce stain on this one,’ Naganami comments, taking out one of the folders, her voice echoing a slight hint of disgust. ‘Honestly, sometimes I wonder if humans shouldn’t just have a drip or nutrient allocation unit. Some of their habits are just … urgh.

You frown.

For some reason, you felt a rather … personal twinge at those words.

‘Is it really that common?’ Maya questions, gesturing with her hands. ‘I thought it was just those … overweight, was it? Those overweight guys who just sat in front of the television set trying to pull double duty.’

‘Like the old Grand Lieutenant, right?’ Naganami points out with the enthusiasm of an otherwise dim student catching onto a classroom topic. ‘He was that sort, huh? I mean. I think I coulda fit in his belly if I tried really hard.’

That part is difficult to block out.

You manage, however.

Thank you.

‘He wasn’t a bad Admiral,’ Nachi points out, returning to her own professional demeanor. ‘Tactically, he was rather sound in all his areas of command. As unenthusiastic as you are about his girth, I have to give credit where it’s due. He wasn’t the easiest person to get along with, but … I can’t fault him on that end. On that front, he excelled. Like I said, though, he didn’t win points with his personality.’

You hear the sound of affirmation from one of the girls. You can’t tell who, however.

‘Yeah, he seems like that sort of fellow, doesn’t he? Why’d he retire, anyway? Did Nagato really snap his leg in two?’

Naganami,’ Maya sounds out, her frustration apparent. You don’t even need a proper line of sight to confirm whether she was rolling her eyes or not.

‘As much as I would have liked that to have been true,’ Nachi lets out a dark chuckle, ‘I think I’ll stick with the more convenient truth.’

Which was?

‘Yeah, not like you care, right?’ Naganami starts coyly. ‘After all, I’ve seen who you’ve got waiting for you back at your barracks …’

Uh-oh.

‘Oi, that’s not the type of thing you bring into normal conversation, you know,’ Nachi chastises. ‘We’re not Carriers.’

‘Forget about that; it’s fine, it’s fine,’ Naganami presses coyly, causing you to grip the edges of the desk in anticipation. Riling up Nachi never was a good thing … and having been at the end of one of her bouts of irritation—despite being human—you wonder if running interference would be a good deal. ‘Girls talk about this all the time, no? Why not us?’

‘Inappropriate.’

To your surprise, it’s Shimakaze who utters those words.

‘Please,’ Naganami huffs, ‘I know how humans act. I think I got this one right.’

‘Naganami,’ Maya calls out her name, a tiredness to her voice. ‘Why do you even want to bring that up? It’s not as if it’s anything we don’t know, right? Biological needs, chemical balance and imbalance, hormones, physiological attraction. You can pick up a book and get the same res—’

‘That’s not … all of it, I believe,’ your Heavy Cruiser cuts in, a tentativeness to her voice.

You could really have done without Naganami’s squeal. You’re floored, however, by Nachi’s admission.

Eh?

Ho?

Hm.

‘It’s a little … odd,’ she continues, her voice causing the hairs on your neck to stand on end. ‘I did initiate it, but that was because I believed that … I guess it was my way of showing my appreciation. I didn’t think anything of it at all. I didn’t think that it was gonna be anything like running a blitz or blowing an Oni’s head wide open or firing off a volley but, um, er …’

You hear the squeak of a dragging foot.

‘I won’t say that it exceeded expectations,’ Nachi hurriedly adds, adopting a tone that you could only describe as defensively haughty. ‘I just think that, all things considered, maybe the Carriers might be on to something … as obsessed with it as they are. It’s like … I guess I can say it feels like, doing it with him …’

You really could do without Naganami’s squeal.

‘So it was good, right? It was definitely like how Akagi-san and Kaga-san described it, ri—ow!

Someone must have physically cut her off.

‘You shouldn’t be going around listening to those morons on things like this,’ Maya chastises. She must have been the one to have administered the hit. ‘It’s all that they can talk about.’

‘But aren’t you curious too? I wonder what kind of biochemical—hey, hey, hey!

‘Really, it’s nothing special physically. Penis running over the ridges of your vaginal opening, stimulation and biochemical triggers. Nothing outside of the parameters of typical human habits.’

‘See?’

‘But,’ Nachi goes on … before taking a pausing. ‘I think … spiritually and mentally, I don’t doubt that the appeal exists. Especially if it’s … well, with someone you connect with.’
>>
‘O-Oi,’ Maya cuts in, a shred of disbelief in her voice. ‘You’re being totally weird now.’

‘A-Am I?’ Nachi questions softly. ‘Is that so …’

‘Weird! Totally weird now!

‘You’re exaggerating,’ Nachi counters, huffing. ‘Come on, we need to sort these out, right?’

‘Eh, it just hit me,’ Naganami chimes in. ‘Does this make Nachi one of those, uh, what does Akagi-san call ‘em again? Girls with shitty tastes in men?

‘NAGANAMI!’

Something inside you … dies.

Unfortunately, it isn’t the cackling monster that called your mindscape home.
