The rock music on the radio blares wordlessly, fading into the back of your mind as you stare at the sheet of questions laid out in front of you, empty except for your name scrawled at the top, Tobias Kelly. You glance up at the clock, grimacing at what you read. It’s already past nine, and you haven’t even started on your assignments. It’s geography homework, you try to reason with yourself, nothing special.

Yet, you’ve felt strange all day, you weren’t able to focus at all during class. Maybe this is just how being sixteen feels like, or it might have something to do with your father completely forgetting your birthday the night before. Your father, Senator Robert Kelly has always been distant, and even more-so ever since your mother died in the rubble of a fight between mutant extremists a couple of years ago, but recently with his attempts at a presidential run, he’s gone weeks at a time without saying a word to you.

But even with all that on your mind, it’s not quite enough to explain how odd you feel. Not even necessarily bad, but strange, in an unexplainable way, as if your body was changing rapidly and majorly without your knowledge. With a sigh, you realize you’re not going to get any homework done right now, you need to do something to clear your mind.

Of course, as a rich recently-turned sixteen year old with a majorly influential father alone in the midst of downtown Manhattan, you have plenty of opportunities of things to interest you. Of course, eventually you settle on doing the same thing you do every time you need to clear your mind.

> Your friends mentioned a punk rock house show which sounds totally radical!
> You always feel safest at the library, and there was some independent study you wanted to get done...
> You just need to blow off steam, head to the gym and try to set some new PRs!
> Call up the head cheerleader. She has a boyfriend, but with your silver tongue, that might not matter.

You've always loved house shows, especially ones with the really loud, angry sort of music. Plus, it's where most of your friends are going to be hanging out. Without any delay, you grab your jacket, enough cash to pay for a cab both ways, and head down the elevator from your penthouse apartment. With a nod to the doorman, you head out onto the Manhattan streets, and hail a cab. You still feel a bit strange, and even though it's winter, at night, in Manhattan, you somehow feel very, very hot on your way to the show. You do your best to keep from getting too sweaty, and hope when you get into the show itself you'll start feeling better.

As you arrive at the address you are giving, you walk up and knock on the door, only to be greeted by your friend and classmate, Dirk!

"Toby! You made it!" He says with a grin, pulling you in for a hug.

"Yeah, yeah. Who's playing?" You ask as he leads you inside and into the kitchen.

"Well," Dirk says, rubbing his goatteed chin. "First of all, there's a couple of regulars, Blood Drainers just finished their set, but the headliner... you ever hear of this chick, she calls herself the Dazzler?"

You shake your head, grabbing an unopened beer from the fridge. "Sounds like the name of a shitty Avenger wannabe."

He laughs, "No man, no. This chick is blowing up like crazy in the music scene. She just put out a record that's pretty much the hottest thing in town! Her live shows are on a whole other level too, she can do things, it's like magic, man."

You shrug, "I guess we'll see. Who else is here?"

"Oh, everybody man. This is one of the biggest shows we're having all year man! They booked Dazzler!" He then leans in a bit, bringing his voice down to just above a whisper, "But hey, for you? I saw Heather get here a while ago, and y'know, she just got out of a thing with Brad. You should make a move man, she's literally been asking me where you've been this whole night! Last I saw, she was heading upstairs."

You shrug him off. It's true, you've had a thing for Heather for a while, but it's not exactly something you're concerned with right now. Or at least, not discussing with Dirk. "I'm just here to clear my head and relax man, I'm not looking for shit to get too crazy." You say, sipping your beer.

Dirk lets out another laugh. "You? Not too crazy? You're funny man. Hey, me and the boys got our hands on this new shit called MHX. It's completely safe, but it gets you on a high like you've never had before. You in, man?"

You pause, glancing at him. You've never really done any hard drugs, most you've had is weed and alcohol, but, if it really is safe for you... As you contemplate, you hear the sound of a female voice from the main room.

"Are you ready... for the Dazzler?!" She cries out, followed by a chorus of cheers.

What do you decide to do?

You turn towards the main room, where the sounds of blaring rock music can be heard. Without turning back towards Dirk, you wave your hand. "I'm gonna go check this out, actually. You guys have fun." Then, with beer in hand, you walk towards the music. You're a bit wobbly on your feet, which shocks you, considering you only had a few sips of beer.

When you enter the main room, pushing your way into the crowd that stretches wall to wall, you're immediately stunned by the lightshow. Before you can see the Dazzler herself, you see where you assume she gets her name from, the spectacular lights that half-blind everyone in the room in a mesmerizing way. Before too long, you see her, jumping up and down on the stage and singing her heart out, Dazzler is a girl that looks about your age, maybe a year or two older, with a huge blonde, heavily hair-sprayed and glitter coated mane. Although she's a bit more pop than most of the people at this house would normally accept, everyone seems to be loving her show.

You take another sip of your beer while you try to dance to the music as much as you can while smothered between what feels like hundreds of people. The heat of being surrounded by this many people is already starting to get to you, but you decide to wait out the set. As the first song comes to a close, things start to decline. The low throbbing of your headache suddenly becomes a heavy pounding, the heat seems to only be increasing by the second, and you feel as if every muscle in your body is sore. You'd hoped going out would help you blow off steam and feel better, but it only seems to be doing the opposite.

"Thanks everybody," Dazzler says into the microphone, "This next song is about for everyone who's ever felt different, like they don't fit into the regular mold of humanity." Her words echo heavily and painfully in your head, not at all helping your headache. The pain continues to build until you scream and cry out, just as things go from bad to worse.

> You feel your body growing even hotter, past any heat you've ever felt before, to the point where your entire body feels like it's on fire.
> You are hit with a tidal wave of loud voices, as if everyone in the room is suddenly shouting at max volume directly into your ears.
> You begin to float above the rest of the crowd, with seemingly no control over your own body.
> You're left unable to stand as your body, muscles, and bones start cracking and shifting, with the size of your body growing significantly in only a few moments.

You nearly collapse to the ground, only to discover the ground starting to pull away from you as you're lifted up into the air. At first you think someone's lifting you up, but you don't feel any hands on you, and looking around, you see no one touching you. You just seem to be floating on your own with no control over it. You stare, wide-eyed as you rise above the crowd of people, and you desperately attempt to grab on to something to hold onto, but nothing is available, and everyone around is just staring at you.

The music stops as you become more visible above the crowd. "Oh, shit." You hear Dazzler swear as the music cuts off. You're too busy freaking out about the fact that you're floating to worry about her. What does this mean? Maybe someone slipped something into your beer. Maybe you were exposed to some sort of freak government radiation. There's one possibility you don't want to even consider.

What if you're a mutant?

Suddenly, you fall back to the ground, slamming back to the floor in the hole in the crowd where people stepped back to gawk at you. You struggle to get your breath back, just glad you didn't hit your head on the floor, when you hear screams from outside alongside what sounds like plane engines. Suddenly, a hole is ripped into the building and looking down at you through what used to be the roof, was a huge metallic monstrosity. A Sentinel, a project your father personally signed off on.

You stare in horror as the giant unblinking spotlight eyes stare back at you. The rest of the crowd panicks and begin to run as you attempt to scramble to get back to your feet.

"MULTIPLE MUTANT THREATS DETECTED. SURRENDER YOURSELVES FOR CAPTURE OR PREPARE TO BE ELIMINATED.

You get up to your feet and thank god that you joined track as you start off running away. The massive crush of bodies trying to escape is a bit of a problem, but you manage to make your way past everyone else, darting out onto the streets as fast as you possibly can. As you exit the front door, you see the sentinel, it looks even larger when you see it properly stood up.

It turns to look at you, "MUTANT THREAT DETECTED. REFUSAL TO SURRENDER WILL BE MET WITH ELIMINATION." The loud speaker imbedded in its chest plays in a robotic sounding voice.

You stare, wide-eyed, as the Sentinel raises a hand, the large barrel imbedded in its palm starts to glow, a terrifying sight. You quickly turn and start trying to run again.

As you run, as fast as your legs can possibly carry you, you hear the Sentinel fire its weapon, and the pavement behind you explodes! You're thankful you were able to at the very least outrun that shot, but most likely the Sentinel won't miss twice. Fortunately for you, your athletic conditioning is pretty fantastic, and you can at the very least run for quite a long time.

However, before you have to do that, the wind begins to pick up, and the Sentinel is struck by a bolt of lightning, causing it to rear backwards. You stop, staring in stunned silence as from the sky drop the mutant terrorists your father has sworn to one day personally destroy, the X-Men. You never thought they'd be saving you from your father's Sentinels like this, yet here you are.

The first one on the scene, a dark skinned woman with a striking pure white mohawk descends from the sky, beckoning lightning strikes and heavy wind and rain that batter the Sentinel. Next, a huge man made of metal charges in, and then he hurls a short man with dangerous looking claws who starts striking and shredding the Sentinel's metallic armor. You see another woman, dressed in green with a white shock through her brown hair, flying around, pounding the Sentinel with powerful punches, and another girl phasing through the Sentinel itself. You even see puffs of purple smoke, and what looks like some kind of demon popping out of them.

It's like nothing you've ever seen before.
