The dipping sun paints a pretty picture over the sparse treeline, you have to admit. You’ve never been one to lollygag around on missions, sure, but that doesn’t mean you can’t admit something looks nice when you come across it.

“Alright, men, we stop here for the night!” the Prince calls as he holds his arm out. Almost at once the military process stops, and without needing to order it a number of men start fanning out to search and secure the area as others begin unloading tents and supplies to begin the camp down for the evening.

You swear you’ve gone maybe 5 or so miles. Good sweet motes, you appreciate Prince’s forwardness and willingness to look after his men...but marching was soooo slow. If Izumi hadn’t agreed when he’d asked, you would have suggested they beg off- and in fact you did anyway. Problem being, you have no clue what’s ahead. When you’d asked, they said that the Lizards held a larger area than the Bears, and thus the forces assaulting them would likely be far larger as well, alongside being more diverse. You’re pretty damn powerful, but you’re also not an idiot.

And thus, here you are. Walking.

As camp is set up, you find yourself tapping your foot slightly at it all. Prince had brought a surprising number of supplies and non-combatants for logistical reasons; frankly you were impressed he had such a mind for it, but that might just be necessity. Regardless, he’s got all your usual setup; cooks readying the evening meal, nervous though they may be. A couple of merchantmen, one being that massive ratfellow you and Izumi saw, hotly discussing business in hushed tones. A pair of strategists, pouring over maps and diagrams in silence. Oh, and the ritualists, those are setting up as well, although for what for you have no clue. The Prince himself seems preoccupied, talking to one of his generals; you can overhear snippets of the discussion mention ‘rabbitfolk’ and a name: ‘Felgrund’.

You could approach any of these at the moment, if you really wanted to. Izumi’s off somewhere; you think she’s helping with securing the perimeter. So, it’s just you at the moment.

>Talk to the cooks. Why not? Maybe you could give them some tips.
>Approach the merchants and see what they’ve got planned.
>See what the strategists are cooking up. It might apply to you.

Well, the rest you can probably ask about later and get all the details; the ritual stuff seems like it’d be best to see now.

It’s not bearkin, either, it’s humans. All robed up and everything, they’re setting up a circle; a couple of them placing small lines of metal in a roughly circular formation, while the last three are sketching patterns and sigils in the dirt. To their credit, they don’t jump or anything at your coming, although two of them do seem surprised and curious.

“Ah, er, Miss Yvrace, was it?” You nod; he DOES seem to be a bit anxious, now that you look at him. Thin, a bit tanned, actually, and a small soul patch of hair. “Terribly terribly sorry, we’re currently in the middle of setting up our Ritual of Purification, you see.” He motions to their current work.

Hm. Curious. “Yeah, I figured. Was just wondering what you were doing. Ritual of Purification, then? What’s that?”

“Ah?” He cocks an eyebrow. “You don’t- well, no, I suppose you wouldn’t need such a spell. Ah, the Ritual of Purification is what makes certain that we do not succumb to illness due to badly cooked or poison foodstuffs. It cleanses the body of toxins and rebalances the bodies harmonies. It is taxing, but necessary work when needed. Ideally, our services will not be required this night.” Huh. Well, that’s nice of them.

> “Mind if I watch, then?” Considering what little you know of sigils, maybe you could remember them- even jot them down for later…
> “That’s all I wanted to know. I’ll leave you to it.” Go approach someone else (Pick One from prior list.)

That's what I thought. I could totally see them doing contests though. The more petty ones at least. "Who can make the more successful business in 500 years." Things along those lines.

“Mind if I watch, then?” That gets the attention of a couple of others. “I’ll be quiet. Just curiosity, is all.”

They look at each other in silent debate, but then the speaker shrugs his shoulders. “I suppose, so long as you take care to not disturb our work.”

“Won’t even get near it,” you promise. You won’t need to, if you’re cautious enough. Incidentally…

You reach into your bag, and pull out your FutureSight. Interesting- seems to take the form of a strange tablet-like stone etching with a thin glass ‘screen’, here. Something that looks almost out of place. You tap where the power button is usually, to find a small holographic output. Ah, that’d explain it.

As you watch silently, you notice yourself getting the occasional glance- that’s probably due to looking like you’re some sort of demon. You’d more or less forgone the cloak now, if only to get people used to it. Pulling that kind of reveal in the middle of a fight with allies would just get people hurt or killed.

They don’t really...feel much of anything, but you can’t help but twitch them a bit as you mess around a bit on the FutureSight, recording the engraving process. Surprisingly, you can actually vaguely recognize at least one of the sigils- if those swoopy lines just so happen to mean 'air' and the other 'nature', that is. Interesting...wonder if it's a variation on standard healing...

Once that’s finished, however, instead of doing any kind of chant or the sort, they just...walk off. “Wait, that’s it?” you ask to one passing you as you store your tablet back.

“Quite. We have no reason to begin anything until needed, after all. For now, we’re getting lunch.” As you look back to the main camp, you notice that indeed, most others are already in line, with the Prince standing off to the side. Huh. Well, that’s a thing.

>Might as well get some food, whatever it is. Maybe you could find some decent eating company.

Well, food is food. Might as well get in line. As you check what’s on tap, you’re unsurprised to find that it’s some sort of vegetable stew, it seems. That, some bread, and a small portion of some type of meat. Likely the equivalent of whatever pork is here. The soldiers are surprised when you wordlessly get in line, and even the cooks look at you oddly- though you notice they fill your bowl up a bit more than others. No one complains.

There’s an air of both tenseness and hope that permeates the area as you sit down on a clear enough patch of grass. The soup isn’t bad, actually. A bit watery, but you suppose that in this situation, beggars can’t be choosers. The bread is essentially hard tack, though.

There’s light conversation around as a fireplace is lit, one of several. To your relief, not long after, Izumi and her march makes it back, unharmed. As she’s standing in line, however, you wonder if you might be able to-

“Er...begging pardon, miss?” Hm? You look up to lock eyes with a younger recruit...he’s got light armor on, something akin to a ranger sort- yeah, that’s a bow on his back. He’s raven haired, and his curious eyes, a rich violet, are locked onto you in a questioning manner. “Mind if I sit with you?”

Strange. You nod in answer, and he sits down carefully. “Pardon my impropriety, I saw you over here, and, well...I was wonderin’, if you don’t mind my askin’. Just..are ya really a forerunner?” You raise an eyebrow in question and he quickly raises a hand in apology. “I mean nothing towards it, miss! I jus’...I’ve heard stories an’ all- we all have. An’ wasn’t anyone but the Forerunners what could use magic without the ritual callin’- the Wild won’t listen otherwise, they said, and the spirits won’t answer without showin’ proper respect, they said.” The more he talks, the more excited he seems to get, but he keeps his voice down. “And Prince said you’re from far away, right!? So you’re a Forerunner, yeah? How come ya kept away for so long? Heck, how’d ya survive?! Is yer magic that strong? Or is it just somethin’ about Forerunners? Are ya connected to the Earth an’ can’t actually die and are all just in the center o’ the earth like folks say?”

…apparently Prince has been dabbling in the art of creative embellishment.

You hold his bright eyed, smiling stare. Waiting, waiting, waiting...after a solid 30 seconds, he flinches, his eyes looking away. “Who are you?”

“Ah!” That gets a reaction out of him. “Er, I, uh…”

“Perhaps you should start a conversation next time with introducing yourself,” you say flatly.

That’s enough to get an honest look of embarrassment out of him. “Sorry. Name’s Pierre. I’m a bit new to the army, y’see…” He trails off, as though he didn’t really want to mention that.

Whatever. “So, you’re some sort of marksman?” You ask, motioning towards his bow. You don’t reaaally care, but so long as you can divert his attention off your supposed origins, you’ll take whatever.

“Ah, well, sort of?” He shrugs. “It’s more that shooting a bow is what I’m good at than anything. I’m supposed ta kinda be a kinda recon sort, really. Got good eyes, so I head in in advance and see what the situation is, then report back. I don’t actually get to use this much…” He frowns briefly, but soon regains his upbeat attitude. “But, hey! With your help, I’ll probably be seein’ a ton more action, y’know! So, yeah! Anyway, I went and answered your question, so what about mine? Fair trade, don’t you think?”

Kid’s kinda annoying, but you get the feeling he won’t let up easily, even if you were to just brush him off.

>Just tell him what he wants to hear...sort of. Might help you even get a few perks if they think you’re some ancient being.

“One more question before I answer.” He frowns, but nods. “I’m curious. What DID the Prince tell all of you about me, specifically?”

“Oh. Weeelll…” he grits his teeth a bit. “Sorry if any of it’s insultin’, but what he said was that he’d sought help in the palace archives, and he found an ancient ritual to summon ‘one of the old warriors’. Somethin’ like that, I don’t remember it all...but he did say that you’re not from ‘ere, that you’re from far away. Not human, but close. And that’s pretty much the Forerunners. Said to have evolved beyond humanity, kinda like what the old elves tried ta do, but better.”

Curious. So that’s the yarn that the Prince spun? “I mean, I know probably there’s some stuff missin’, but yeah, sounds about right, don’tcha think? The Prince tries to be particular about that kinda thing.”

You sigh. “Well, yes, in a way-”

“Oi!” Oh, damnit, now what? “Whatcha tryin’ to do, catch ‘er fancy?” There’s a couple guffaws thrown his way by a trio that seem to be rather raucous, all things considered. A blush erupts on his face as he frowns at them, muttering what you’re pretty sure are curses under his breath. “Come now, she’s prolly looking for a guy what can actually fight! Heard about that before,” he whispers to his friends...even though you can still hear him fine. “Somma them warrior women types up north are real picky ‘bout that sorta thing. Strange, if’n you ask me.” Turning back around all smiles, he gives you a toast. “Ey, we’ll take ‘im off your hands, miss!”

Well...damnit. You’re not really all that great with words, but annoying as the kid is, he’s just asking questions. Don’t exactly need to throw him to the wolves for it, you suppose. Instead, you simply pat him on the shoulder as you look to the interlopers. “It’s fine. We were just talking,” you say, as flat as possible.

To their credit, their grins only drop a bit as they make a show of leaning away. “Oho, gotcha, gotcha! No worries, we’ll be right here if ya need us!” The way they look at you as their little ringleader says that makes you vaguely concerned, but...meh, you’ll deal with it.

As for Pierre, he’s looking at you practically brimming with gratitude. “Thanks a ton. I mean it! Those three are...well, they’re alright, I guess, but they like to shove me around for whatever reason. It’s annoyin’, but I’ll find a way to shut ‘em up eventually.”

Right. “If you say so. As for your question? He’s not wholly incorrect,” you allow, as his face lights up. “But there’s a difference between Forerunners and myself,” you allow.

“Yeah?! What is it?” he asks, enamored.

“You’ll have to figure that out for yourself. Maybe,” you say as you finish your soup. Going back to return the bowl, ignoring Pierre’s awestruck and curious expression, you wonder how to spend the rest of your evening before going to bed…

QUICK OUT OF CHARACTER NOTIFICATION:

I appreciate the effort, swear I do, but please do not advertise in other quests about this quest. I enjoy reading other people's quests, doing crossovers and all that, but I'll approach them myself if my interest extends that far. Otherwise all you get is annoyance and bile where it's not necessary.

The anon in question knows who I'm talking to. The QM in general is a good fella who's quests I highly enjoy, and I'd rather not have my players foul up his thread. If you really really want it, ask me here and I'll try to approach them myself, please. Where DID Izumi wander off to? It’s been a bit, but looking around, you don’t see her anywhere- at least, not sitting with any of the groupings of soldiers. Did she head somewhere to be by herself? Hmm…

“Looking fer someone?” You turn your head a bit to see the rat-fellow passing by, finished with his food much like yourself. “Your ally from the other day, perchance?”

“I am,” you confirm.

“Ah, she’s finished with her meal. Felt it best to take a bit of a walk- she’s not far gone that way,” he says, pointing in the direction where they’d been marching from. “Likely to make sure everythin’ settles well- that stuff had a kick to it, eh?” He grins, motioning to the empty bowls the servants are busy scrubbing at.

You just nod; it was filling, but you wouldn’t have called it particularly spicy. “I see. Thank you.” A quick farewell, and you’re headed onwards.

Izumi, once you catch up to her, doesn’t seem to be doing anything in particular; her sword is out, but she seems rather idle about it, the blade at rest in her hand.

It’s then that her hand flicks upwards, and suddenly a flurry of leaves are tossed into the air. Almost immediately her sword flips up and starts singing through the air. After a few flashes of her blade, the deed is done, and she sheathes it- the various leaves having been cut into two pieces to a one.

“...You were waiting for me before you did that, weren’t you?” you opine. That was just too…

“Maaaybe?” She replies cheekily, a grin visible despite you being behind her. “I DO always like to keep on top of my skills.”

“Kinda what I was here for, actually.” you admit. “Was wondering if you were up for some training before we turned in.”

“Oh? Interesting,” Izumi admits, turning to face you. “Of what sort?”

“Well, I’ve been theorizing a few techniques,” you admit. “Was hoping you might help me take one or two of them past that point…”

>sticky mana

So we can eventualy make it into mana sticky strings
>>
>>3224257
“Well,” you start, conjuring up a small glob of sticky mana. “I was wondering just what I could do with this…”

And so you outline your idea- a sticky string of mana that you could control, perhaps like a lasso, grappling hook, or other tool. Harder to simply ‘cut’ than most standard string, and something that you can modify on the fly. Maybe even some sort of conduction in the future, if you’re feeling stylish, like an in-built taser. Izumi certainly seems amenable to the idea, and thus it begins.

Izumi knows a bit about shaping mana, but it’s largely more solid constructs- she admits that rope weapons generally aren’t something she creates herself, preferring more solid melee weapons, as they’re easier to retain a shape of in the first place. Still, if you’re not angling for a specific form that isn’t just ‘thin strand’, she surmises, it should be easier to hold together. You’ve got a bit of a start with your sticky mana that aren’t quite good bombs, so that’s one step completed. The hard part is condensing it while still keeping its elasticity and range.

With her help, it’s not long before you get...something, going, actually. She’s got a lot of general tips for you, and while the moon is well in the sky before you call it done…

“Alright...hit it!” She holds up a small tree branch, and you point your index finger at it. The mana near your finger coalesces, and a small, shining rope of the stuff fires out, wobby, loose, but together, the blob of it on the end globbing onto the branch as the rope itself begins to droop to the floor. “Fantastic! Now, let’s see if you can reel it in.”

That...proves to be a bit more issue. Just ‘vacuuming’ it back in is rather hard for you; there’s nothing there that you can really do there. Physically pulling it back seems a bit more plausible, but it seems like you can...proved that the target doesn’t resist too hard, else the rope breaks. At the moment, then, seems like you can at least use it as a small grappling hook, but anything else will have to wait until you can work out the tensile strength a bit more.

“Well, so far, so good. The elasticity needs work, of course, as does the tensile strength, but it’s a good start,” Izumi suggests. You have to agree. “We should at least get to bed, however. Or rather, one of us should. I figure one of us should keep watch, at least.” Smart. Your training has left you a bit tired, and a bit shy of mana, but you might be able to sneak in a bit more work if you stay up...

Current Mana: 11000/12500

You agree, and you both head back together. Frankly, you wouldn’t have said no. Regardless, he seems pleased when you both inform him that you’re taking up nightly watch alongside the usual rotation.

We still have the mana condenser, and our regen is 2,500 a night. That's almost enough to refill us back to full.

Anyway, let's see if she'll try anything first or runs away before we decide if it's worth it or not.
>>
>>3225046
Regen includes the condenser boost iirc.
>>
>>3225106
I flat out don’t believe that. That would mean mana regen is 1,500 per rest instead of the 2,500 stated in the world’s summary. We would need to hook ourselves up to the condenser every night.
>>
>>3225145
First, the amount the condenser boosts regen by is variable, same as normal regen itself. Second, we are always wearing the condenser on mission anyway.
>>
>>3225160
we always carry the condenser, but we seldom use it; Most of the time it stays in the backpack doing nothing. The mana we regen right now is without any modifiers.
>>
>>3225160
I’m still going by what the world summary and condenser discription says. It makes more sense from a bookkeeping perspective. Variable probably refers to unusual situations and times where Miranda’s sleep would be interrupted.

Handler’ll probably tell us what it is tomorrow, anyway.
>>
>>3225185
>Most of the time it stays in the backpack doing nothing.
It /is/ the backpack. It does boost mana capacity, which might be the source of some confusion.

>>3225187
>Variable probably refers to unusual situations
Surely the amount it could regen would be based on the world's base regen more than anything?
>times where Miranda’s sleep would be interrupted.
I've always figured regen overnight was an abstraction of recharge over an entire day, as keeping track time like that would be a pain.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1095150/
>>’Lorenzo’s Own’ Extreme Mana Condenser- 7 Motes (Large): Lorenzo’s done his best to develop a condenser that can take in even the smallest amounts of mana and compress and store it to reasonable levels. It's only decently fast, can’t store as much as a couple others, but it does something few others do- it can convert mana to a form similar to your own, allowing you to utilize it more naturally. Can store up to 1500 extra mana.

>Can store up to 1500 extra mana.
>>
>>3226050
Fine. That’s correct. Good on you. However, we’re currently wearing the shoes. THAT’S the extra 1,500 mana. It’s not the condenser.

This is our current equipment setup:
>Miranda's Jacket: [Intimidation +1/Plainness -1]:
>Glowing Headband (Otherworldly +1 / Hothead -2)
>*Mastercrafted* Divine Shoes(Humor +2 / Intimidation +1 / Otherworldly +1)
>Ribbon Wings (Otherworldly +2/Humor +1)
>>
>>3226059
So if the condenser isn't adding to our mana pool, and isn't boosting regen, why do we even have the thing? It's gotta be doing something.
>>
>>3226155
the idea is that we use it every night, gain the 1500 mana that it captures through the day and refill our reserves. But surprise surprise, we never use the items we have. No wonder miranda didn't ask for a discount for 80+ years
>>
>>3226155
Its purpose is to condense ambient mana to charge the mana stones Miranda has that she in turn uses as Mana Pots for quick recovery of spent mana.
>>
>>3226165
Pretty sure Handler adds in the condenser mana after each rest, so anons don’t have to say “Remember to use the condenser” after every vote to rest.

>>3226175
I was under the impression that the stones were one use. I do know that we have to use the condenser as we sleep, but that’s about it. In my head, we use it like one of those C-PAP machines to absorb the mana, but that’s just head canon.
>>
there appears to be all sort of confusion. I think we ought to table the shoes/condenser/stones/etc for now until we can get a word from God.
>>
>>3226204
The shoes are rather easy to understand. they give us extra mana and wings(depending on the outfit we choose). The problem is the capacitor and the stones.
>>
>>3226221
Sorry, but it’s the Ribbon Wings that we’re currently that’s giving us wings, not the shoes. The shoes do give us extra mana, though.

>I was under the impression that the stones were one use.

>>
The regen rate is baseline, it doesn't include any clothes or equipment.

The crystals are reusable/rechargable.

The condenser collects ambient Mana in the air, and wearing it when it's full grants you that much extra mana. You can utilize that mana instead of your baseline- think of it like a temporary overcharge.

I don't think I missed anything, does that all explain it?
>>
>>3226876
>You can utilize that mana instead of your baseline- think of it like a temporary overcharge.
I don't think we've ever done that. We should definitely use it more often. We've been always wearing it on-mission since we got it, right?
>>

It's usually in your bag.
>>
>>3226919

As tempted as you are to confront it somehow, if it doesn’t know you know, then there’s no reason to not see what it’s doing. You don’t make any obvious movements, the occasional light swiveling of your head to ‘sweep’ the area so you can look as though you’re still on the lookout; it ducks behind the trees, but doesn’t move for a few minutes- and then takes out a piece of parchment and a pen, it seems. Making notes, then?

It moves as silently as possible through the trees, pausing as it slips past you. At this point, you can keep a closer eye on it; although it’s starting to get a bit close to the camp, it seems to not be willing to approach too closely, rather preferring to jot down whatever it might be interested in. Likely army details: estimated force count, types of soldiers, all that jazz.

Well, might as well see if you can put your latest skill to proper use. It takes a second to create a glob of mana on the end of your finger- a point, and *fwip* it darts out towards the unsuspecting bunny. Ah, there’s another advantage you didn’t immediately note- it’s silent. Wonder if that extends to everything about it or not…

Regardless, it globs onto the rabbit immediately, with a quick shriek all that it gets off before you quickly pull back to make sure it’s already on its way before it can get its bearings. Fortunately, although it seems to ‘tear’ a bit, the rope lasts long enough to fling your prey into the air towards you before it dissipates. It lands in a sprawling tumble, and in only a step or two you’re quick to seize it by the legs- powerful things on a rabbit, and you’d rather it not have that freedom. “And who might you be?” you ask evenly. “Also, why are you scouting this army if you’re supposed to be allies?”

“Uhh...oh dear. Ohhh dear. I, uh, well!” It’s a male’s voice at least, although he sounds rather frightened. “Well, you see, the Council has had a bit of a, uh...reorganization? And we heard that Dulwark was freed, and... I’m just following my orders, I-I swear! I just need to take notes on your progress and-and your army size and report back! I, uh, well...I mean, I wasn’t supposed to let anyone know, because- because we don’t know what we’re gonna do yet, y’know?”

But we should thank all the anons that voted to train it. You guys are the best.

As the guy who came up with the sticky bomb, I'm glad to see so many good ideas come up out of it. When I originally thought of it, I was thinking of a combination of a throwable C4 bomb and the plasma grenades of Halo. I'd never would have thought developing the sticky part of it would lead us to Spiderman web slinging and Just Cause grapple tether ideas.

“Right. Well, I’m sure the Prince will want to know about that. As well as a number of other things,” you decide. “So you’re going to stay here with us for now.”

“Ah, uh! D-do I have to? My leaders will be rather angry if I’m found out…” You can imagine he’d be sweating if he could. “I mean, I-I was told not to and all, and well, it’d be very very unfortunate if-”

“Sorry, but no,” you decide, already marching him to the campgrounds. There’s bound to be some sort of rope or chain or shackles here somewhere… “We’ve got a few too many questions about that, really. Especially regarding that whole bit with reorganization.”

“O-oh, thaaat?” He laughs, trying to play it off. “Nothing all that big, I swear! Just, y’know, a bit of a shakeup, rabbits go in, rabbits go out, no big dea- ack!” That last bit was you gluing him to a slab of stone. It shouldn’t hurt him any, but it’ll keep him there for a while. Ah, there’s some spare rope. Probably for the barrels or something, but you’ll give it back later. “I mean, all things considered, y’know? Par for the course! Sooo…”

“So you’re a scout? Who’s waiting for you and where?” you ask quickly.

“Uh, I mean, yeah, and no one! I mean, they said I was supposed to do it alone, so yeah!” He shakes his head. “It’s just me here right now...although right now I really really wish it weren’t.”

“That seems a bit reckless,” you admit. “Did you get a reason why?”

Another shake of the head. “Uhhh...no. Buuuut...I guess, y’know, I mean...if you REALLY want a guess- please don’t tell the council- it’s probably because they were hoping I wouldn’t...y’know, make it?”

Strange… “Why not?”

“Cause, my mom supported Thorumin’s son to take over, and the new guy didn’t like that,” he says with bitterness in his voice. Councilchair Felgrund was always skeptical of the alliance, but after we got pushed back and scattered, he’s taken over an’ banished Thorumin and his supporters. He doesn’t want anything to do with the war, and at FIRST he was like ‘we’ll just wait it out underground, we can survive down here for generations!’ but now he’s like ‘hey let’s see what’s going on above ground it’s probably not that bad anymore’. I mean, my mom’s not a fan of the guy, and honestly, neither am I. But we’re not crazy. Thorumin and his supporters are probably dead to Weavers by now...”

Hm. Well, that’s disheartening, but useful.

The morning arrives with no further trouble- save for the shock of an intruder in the camp that you’ve already taken care of. While the Prince insists that next time, you wake him up immediately, he’s of no poor mood about the whole thing- at least not until the Rabbitkin (who’s name you learned was Frederique) informed him of the change in administration, upon which he curses. “That’s...problematic,” the Prince admits. “Felgrund I’ve only met twice, but I got the distinct feeling he disliked me both times. I worry if this was perhaps taking our measure for later…” He frowns at the thought, but soon dismisses it with a shake of his head. “No matter. We must press on.” He turns to the young rabbit, sitting now with curiosity (and less rope). Frederique, you will remain with us as a temporary envoy under guard; as Prince, I do not formally recognize Council Leader Felgrund’s rule at this time.” As the rabbitboy gawkes at the declaration, he turns on his heel and leaves, ordering his men to finish decamping.

It’s not long after you’re all on the road again- trying to make haste to the marshlands before they’re overrun entirely. From what the Prince and a few of the men told you, the marshlands can either be utterly harrowing or mildly annoying. For the Lizardkin, who were born and bred in the place, it’s paradise. For humanity and most of the other types, it’s a natural deathpit if you go in the wrong areas. Fortunately, the Lizardfolk’s primary villages and other areas were in the more fecund and less fetid areas, thanks to their diet.

“So, what am I supposed to do?” Frederique asks lightly. He seems to be taking this ‘captive’ thing pretty easily.

“Keep yourself calm, and out of danger,” Izumi says easily. “I don’t think any of us here would want you hurt.”

“Yeah, that’s nice. Honestly, it sucked when I saw Thorumin and his group marched off.” He sighs. “I heard a couple of them talk about something called a ‘Veilspeaker’, but I don’t know what that is. Some sort of magic device, I think.” You and Izumi quickly glance at each other. Thorumin and his group went to find a Veilspeaker, then, maybe? If that was so…

And if you recall correctly, they were to the far east of the Bearkin- and you were heading easterly already. You’d come across the Lizards first, and that absolutely takes priority, but maybe, just maybe you could kill two birds with one stone...

The march continues on for some time- about a day and a half. The next night, you’re requested (rather humbly) to assist in scouting. There’s little to see this night, and aside from a bit more practice and Frederique’s rather poor attempt at singing, there’s nothing of note that happens, aside from the air notably getting a bit more pungent.

It’s the second day as morning is just turning to noon that you broach the marshlands proper- and it’s not much further along the path that you can see the results of the lizards’ attempts at holding out. Some of the smaller villages are near burnt to the ground, abandoned, and corpses litter the streets. Some with armor and weapon, some without, and of all ages, shapes, and sizes.

“An ill portent,” the Prince mumbles as you pass through another razed village. “Have you noticed the manner of this destruction?”

“I have, actually,” Izumi replies. You nod in agreement; you had as well. The shadows, from what you saw, weren’t one for burning and this kind of total destruction. The ways of death were often too clean, as well; slit throats, stab wounds, snapped necks. Not crushing blows, or the feral rips and gouges of the shadows that you’d dealt with so far. You’d at first chalk it up to some other force- maybe more Weavers. That might even be the case, but something nags at you… “It’s a bit...too clean,” Izumi voices aloud. “Like it was organized…”

“Do you think they might have another ally?” one of the soldiers wonders aloud.

“There might be something like that waiting in the wings,” you admit. “I’ll go scout ahead to see just what’s what.”

“Excellent idea,” the Prince acknowledges. “I would’ve suggested the same myself. Be cautious.”

After a few minutes of making proper pace, you’re a bit dismayed to find that, if you stick to the trail, there’s not a great deal of cover to work with. It’s only in the marshes proper that you have trees and whatnot to find cover behind...and that leaves your footing bad, after a brief test. You’re going to have to be careful, indeed.

Soon, however, you can hear the sound of a fight coming from ahead of you. While it took you only a few minutes to reach them, it’d take the army at least a half hour or so… However, you quickly move forwards to get a measure of the situation at the very least. Hopefully they’re not walking into a massive cluster…

...and luckily, it seems like you’re not. There’s a number of Lizards warring against the shadows- it seems like even though they are supposedly shadow, they can still be affected by natural impediments like swampy ground and whatnot. The Lizards, from the look of them, have wide, webbed feet; they stand tall, at least 6 feet, and are dressed in various feather-lined tunics and other wear. A couple in particular stand out to you- a large, almost dinosaur-like Lizardkin dressed in a bone headdress lined with feathers and various bangles on its arms and legs. You’re unsure of gender at this distance, but it wields a large spear, and very effectively as it cleaves through the shadows- including one of the shadow lieutenants that you fought earlier. Alongside it are two other warriors, one of them nearly as tall but more lithe; they fight with claw and, interestingly, a blade connected to her heels- she moves almost like a ballerina; quick and sharp with her leg movements to cleave through the masses that dare to approach. They’re backed up by a number of injured Lizardkin in various states of armor; even beaten and bloody, these warriors still fight as though they haven’t even been wounded.

You’re quick to fish out your stone and report it in. “Good to know! You’re clear to assist, according to the Prince. We’ll double time it!” Izumi says quickly before she closes the link.

Well. Nothing for it! You’re just going to have to get a running start…

The leap is good. The shock as you land and punch out one of the encroaching shadows with your new upgraded gauntlets is better. And, deep down in a place you hate to acknowledge, you have a little thrill. Entrances like that really don’t get old.

The Lizards only spare you a brief glance, however, before they return to their combat. You’re quick to slam your fist into a multitude of shadows, smashing through a throng of them quickly before the wave seems to slow down. It’s as you back up, making sure that none of them can take you by surprise, that the big guy finally speaks.

“Well met.” His voice is creaking, but deep. “You show at an opportune time, creature. We will owe much for this due.” You’re not sure what he means, but you’ll worry about that later. “Their numbers thin. We continue the battle.” Yeah, THAT you can get behind.

Two bigger shadows- you’re not quite sure what they are, but not quite lieutenants- literally roll forward, intended to bowl you over. A green fist meets them as you aim low, scooping them up into an uppercut that sends them flying- and flying apart at the seams. The dancer warriors flips over a pair in a graceful arc, slicing them both before they can even recognize they’ve been split apart. The massive Lizardkin simply uses his massive frame and spear to skewer any that get close with impressive speed- at one point he’s practically got a shiskabob before they dissipate.

The battle continues on for some time; although your assistance keeps things well in hand. By the time the main body of the army shows up, the Lizards, though exhausted, have fought off just about the whole of the invading force for the small village. It’s a trivial matter for Izumi and some of the other knights to secure the area. The Prince, approaching you as soon as he’s finished giving the order, is quick to speak. “Excellent work here. We’d have been all the poorer for the loss of these particular individuals.”

“You know them?” you ask, turning to the two in question.

The large one (who you’re pretty sure is a guy by now) shakes his head. “He does not. However, he recognizes our garb, no doubt. And we, his.” Him and his warriors bow as best they are able. “Human leader. We appreciate your assistance in this matter, as befits our alliance.”

“Yvrace, Hylinde,” he motions to the two. “I’d like to formally introduce to you two members of the ‘Ko-Korathi’, the Lizards’ most elite warrior unit.”

cont.
>>
>>3232239
The large one nods. “I am Si-Han, Arbiter of Vengeance.”

The smaller dancer does likewise. “I am Kri-Yan, The Sweet Blade.”

Fancy names. “Right. Good to meet you,” you allow.

The Prince nods in greeting, but his expression is one of impatience. “Forgive my impropriety, but I must ask. What are you doing out here? We come to support you in battle.”

“Excellent,” Si-Han says with clear relief. “A moment of rest, and to tend to our wounded, then. We shall guide you shortly.”

“If you don’t mind…” Izumi says, piping up as she steps forward. Blah, you’re not going to try to spoil it.

>>
>>3232248
Well, there’s not a lot you can really think of- the Prince is certainly taking the lead on things. It seems as though their chief city is still protected, although the shadows have been making more headway thanks to a massive encroaching force of both shadows and Shaded Elves. The two had been out here on orders from their High Judicator in an attempt to clear a route to the outer areas in case of evacuation. Unfortunately, they’d been beset upon, and thus you showed up. The corpses, when asked about...apparently the Lizardkin have a strange belief system; many of those wounds were self-inflicted, apparently. They did not want to be ‘lost to the shadow’, but when inquired about further, they were rather indignant.

So you do your best to shift the topic. "Have a group of Rabbitkin come through here?”

The two, surprised at your question, look at you oddly, then at each other before shaking their heads. They turn back to the other lizardkin soldiers before speaking something in a native language. There’s a lot of single word responses...however, one speaks for a bit longer, much to your interest. After a few moments of such, he turns to you. “Palu claims to have seen a traveling force marching to the southeast not long before the shadows came to strike here. They passed by the village, but did not stop. For what reason do you ask this?”

You look to Izumi briefly before turning back. “We have reason to believe their leader is looking for the Veilspeaker Weavers."

That draws a curious reaction from both Si-Han and Kri-Yan; their eyes don’t bug out, but their jaws drop a bit before clasping shut, Si-Han the first to recover. “Truly? An odd choice. We understand the Veilweavers had not chosen a side in this war. Perhaps the bouncing ones seek their aid for whatever reason? This may need to be reported to the Judicator…” he turns to confirm it with his compatriot, who nods. “...and so we will report back with them. I anticipate we will see battle before we return.”

So do you… “You think those blades of yours are up to it?” you ask lightly towards Kri-Yan.

She just smiles gamely. “They have been in my family for many years, and a symbol of my status and skill. I assure you, I will live to see that they stay that way.”

She’s confident, at least.

We've already used this tactic in the fight against the cook, placing barriers in the air to jump around on.
>>
>>3233181
I meant to address that in the run, actually, but burnt out before I could get to it. She's on the march with you lot, although very trussed up; unlike Zatzil, who has been relocated to Dulwark by now, Carrang seems oddly content.

>>3233183
Nothing specific, no. It's a trade town, yes, but nothing of any note. You'll get a chance with more specialized buildings soon.
>>
>>3233346
Great we're amassing a collection of subs.
>>
>>3233325
They are expensive, but functional as jumping platforms. I don't think we could make one long enough to run along without making it even more expensive though.
Maybe we should use normal barriers in combat more often so we can get that sweet exp and be able to experiment with them more. The reason we don't is we can usually just dodge though, so it may be difficult to find a reason to bother.
Actually, this fight might provide one. Our mobility is hampered in this mud; dodging will be more difficult.
>>
>>3233566
That's what I was thinking, actually. That this is the best place to train our barrier mobility skills.

I wonder if we could bond a barrier to the soles of our shoes instead, for instance. Then use them like snowshoes. Maybe see what the friction on them is like.

After all, if we can make sticky mana, can we make "slippery" mana?

We could make frictionless barriers that we could then slide on/down. Put it under people's feet to mess with them. Move heavy things on it. Skate on them with.
>>
>>3233566
>They are expensive, but functional as jumping platforms.
but that is because we cast them with the same properties as the normal barriers. If we make them weaker, smaller and with less lifespan, they shouldn't cost as much.
>>
>>3233586
Snowshoes function because they spread you weight over a wider area, but it would be an interesting experiment.
I imagine 'grease' mana wouldn't be that hard to pull off, but it would take some experimentation. It would certainly be funny to play around with.
Slippery barriers might be a bit harder, but could also be interesting.

>>3233588
Currently all we've got are 'stock' single direction barriers, and the massive omni-directional Great Barrier. We'll have to experiment some to make cheaper, weaker barriers that still have utility without shattering on contact.
>>
>>3233604
yep, that's exactly what i said.
We should start by reducing the barrier to a 1m*1m area and halving its strength. That alone should reduce the mana consumption by a lot (i'm guessing that at the very least it should cut it from 1000 to ...250-300 ish) and from there we can tweak it further.
>>
>>3233631
Well this is the environment to try it in.
>>
>>3232536
What are the physical properties of barriers? As in, how thick are they? Subatomic? Glass panel width? How brittle are barriers? Are they too brittle to make a weapon viable? Do properties vary among barriers?
>>
>>3233702
i think that was already explained before. They are strong enough and thin enough to make mana blades. Handler even gave us a bonus to them if we were gunning for them(but i'm probably confusing that bonus for something else because i can't find the post).
>>
>>3233730
Well, practice with making them have different properties or be static relative to our shoes is probably safer than trying to use them as blades in combat first.
>>
>Carrang seems oddly content.

I'd guess glass panel or so, but that's speculation.
The Barriers are shields, so they're not going to be brittle.

Something tells me we'll be breaking a siege this week.
>>
>>3235177
Easy peasy to break the siege.

Go to lake.

Nova Buster Bahamut Ultimate Zero Dark Attack Revolution the water towards the city.

> Tsunami!

Profit!
>>
>>3235177
If that’s the case, free war hammer from killing the siege guy!

Which reminds me, got to take some time with the FutureSight to scan the sword and buckler we got off of Carrang.

>fuckhuge wave that would destroy most of the city
Yeah, let's not do anything that would hinder our allies/pay.
>>
>>3236876
It's alright, lakes can't make tsunamis. I doubt we could make one in an ocean anyway, you would have to move a lot of water.
>>
>>3234847
I don't think they're this >>3235662 amphibious.

> get on boat

> go as fast as possible towards walls

> cast a light barrier slanted up from water to wall

> hope you hit at a good angle

We could probably use a mana blast to make a big wave behind the boat for extra speeds, though.

Carry a bunch of dudes in to open it from inside.
>>
>>3235662
>>3237720
I highly doubt that mirandaor anyone that we know(other than sal and maybe the S rank we met) has the raw power to create a tsunami.
>>
>>3237808
She has the ability to fire off an exploding vacuum laser beam twice per day. That’s probably enough power. What you should be wondering is “Why don’t we fire off Nebula Buster at the oncoming army instead of the lake?”. Or even, “Why are we wasting mana blasting the army when we can jump past the frontline troops so we can murder the general and lieutenants with laser beams?”.
>>
>>3237834
>She has the ability to fire off an exploding vacuum laser beam twice per day. That’s probably enough power.
The nebula buster only has the power to obliterate a single street more or less. A tsunami is the aftermath of an earthquake and is capable of ravaging a whole beachline. Comparing both is like comparing a candle to a forest fire.
>"Why are we wasting mana blasting the army when we can jump past the frontline troops so we can murder the general and lieutenants with laser beams?”
Unless we are following the Price's orders to support the troops, that's how most of the fights have gone. We got Carrang that way, the spidertaur as well as the swamp shadows.
>>
>>3237850
We nuked an entire fleet of airships with a single Buster during the joint operation with Direct Action, as well as an entire flying island holding a spell relaying crystal, it’s probably larger then a street.

>Unless we are following the Price's orders to support the troops, that's how most of the fights have gone.
Exactly! That’s my point. Don’t fix what isn’t broke.
>>
>>3237890
>We nuked an entire fleet of airships with a single Buster during the joint operation with Direct Action, as well as an entire flying island holding a spell relaying crystal, it’s probably larger then a street.

If i recall correctly, in the first one we were direcly leeching off from the helicarrier's mana reactor, or we used up most of our reserves in the spell and the second one was possible because we used the rapier and/or they also used a planetcracker bomb or something like that.
>>
>>3237909
Alright, looking at the sup/tg/ archive, the fleet was mostly airplanes, and we had no mana assistance, although we were allowed to recharge in the mana basin.

Meanwhile, the island one we had mana assistance from Izumi to increase our Buster’s size, but no assistance from DA, as those bombs were too pricey for us.
>>
>>3237940
Also the mana crystal we were shooting was set off.
>>
>>3238004
Pretty sure that we decided not to fire our nebula buster at the crystal directly, in case of it being transmitted through the big crystal to the smaller crystals. We just shot at the island and let the gravity implosion take care of the rest.
>>
>>3238058
I know it was kinda expensive for what it was, but I wish we had kept that Crystal. It would have been great fun to experiment with.

The rest of the trip is relatively uninteresting. There’s some discussion on the situation near the capital, but they assure that despite the continuous combat around the satellite villages, every man, woman, and child of the Lizardkin are prepared to stand and fight (how this coincides with their belief system, you’re unsure), and the main city will at least hold until you get there. The Prince nonetheless implores his men to be ready for longer marching hours.

Personally, you wish you could just take the most direct route there; when asked about it, though, they unfortunately tell you that much of the land turns worse before it gets better, and it’d be a mess to walk though. Honestly, the squelching in your feet is annoying as all getout already. The fact that they’re keen to follow the river closely doesn’t help.

Carrang, as you discover, is a bit of a...strange dish. Ever since her resounding defeat, she seems rather meek, almost *timid* even, and she flushes a dark purple whenever you get near her. A few initial attempts at interrogation have...well, they didn’t do well, essentially.

You’d thought being ‘too kinky to torture’ was a myth, but seriously. Good thing you hadn’t tried your shock touch on her, she’d have probably thanked you...

“Alright...let’s try something new.” you mutter to yourself as you approach her during a brief rest stop.

“S-something new, huh?” She sounds less afraid and more content, giving a small, blushing smile. “Okay, if you want…”

It’s a couple hours, by your estimate, before she finally opens up- what does it isn’t any particular set of pain, but as you learned out of a random statement, her worst nightmare, it seems, is essentially sensory deprivation. You couldn’t exactly do that (yet), but the threat was just good enough to get her to start talking a bit…but you can tell she’s still reluctant.

>>
>>3238876
We're all about experimenting in the field right now, not just practice sessions anymore.

This is a perfect time to try it. We have sticky mana (to wrap around our hand) and mana synchronization (to alter the frequency of our sticky mana).

With those two, we can try to replicate Flux Wave, which is just a rapid cycling of mana, by cycling just the frequency of the specific mana in our hands.

It's applying the techniques of our moves, not making new "spells".

“Alright, so, first thing’s first. What are we coming up against?” you ask strictly.

She actually flinches a bit- a vauge part of you wonders why the personality change, but you won’t ask it. “Well...I was part of a detachment to hold the place. From what I heard, it was just, y’know...a whole hoard of shadows, and at least two flock’s worth.” She only takes a moment to read your curious stare. “Uh, a flock’s about fifty footsoldiers, fifty archers, a ritualist detachment of about ten for long range…and ramming squads.

So a bit over two hundred Shaded at best. That’s a good number, at least. “Alright, now for something a bit more personal: why bother joining Lord Kolm? What did he promise you?”

“Oh!” And here she cheers up a bit. “That’s easy- he gets it.”

“Gets what?” you ask in curiosity.

“Gets why we’re still here. Why we exist. He gave us a reason. Something to work towards. Something we haven’t had in a long, long time…” she looks almost dreamy. “And now I’ve found you, and I’m...satisfied. Everything since joining him? I can’t say I regret it at all. Everything that’s happened has been amazing!”

Suddenly, you hear a voice. “We should be able to have sight of the city before much longer,” Si-Han says from the front. If they’ve been listening in, they haven’t indicated as such. Good to know...

She grins. “There’ll be a lot of fun I’m missing out on, I bet.”
Probably, but you’re not going to give her any extra ideas of escape. “Ever consider what might happen once he’s done with this whole ‘conquering’ thing?”

She shakes her head happily. “Nope! But we’ll follow whatever he does! As long as it’s something…exciting.” Hm.

>>
>>3239151
Honestly, wasn't intentionally trying to do that with her. She got one shotted by us, so she'll need a ton of training to get up to par, plus I'm worried about possible mental health issues.

I'm not against it entirely, though. Could be a nice thing Izumi could work on, having her work with and help someone who is similar to what she fears she could become, and helping her overcome that.

Honestly, though, if we've got a hard limit of 10 characters, I'm gonna try to be a bit more selective.

If we could convince a Weaver, though...

>>
>>3239188
What we're talking about is a long-term mental health issue, likely stemming from childhood. I doubt that our gauntlets could solve anything THAT long ago, much less heal problems of a psychological bent.
>>
>>3239178
>>3239188
The gauntlets? There's gotta be a statute of limitations on how long after the damage occured. The circle of life is a thing; don't want to restore that wooden figurine to dirt, or a granite statue to piles of it's component stones.
The corruption of the elves from light to dark was long enough ago to be mere legend now. Was she born this way?

>>
>>3239203
Could always test it. I mean it could just restore damage objects and not help with healling at all but we will never figure out if we don't test.

But the bottom line we need to draw is that we aren't getting paid yo heal some mental derranged dark elf so we should just keep the interrogations without becoming a bleeding heart.
>>
>>3239208
The buckler too right?

>>3239207
About the gaulet it says it requires more will the more old the damage was made. So it would probably burn a lot of mana to restore one of the elfs. >>
>>3239151

I'll say this: If Izumi shows interest in bringing someone back to the Intersection, for whatever reason, I'll take that as a cue to make the offer to the character. Something about that just...rubs you the wrong way. “Wait, hold on. That doesn’t make sense. Your whole thing is just your entire race having an existential crisis? Pretty much every race asks that question. Why go so far to answer yours?”

She shrugs. “I dunno if it’s ALL of us, but it’s a popular question! And we love having something to do! We used to, y’know. Sorta. Have things to do. Then everything stopped making sense. I don’t exactly know why. I’m pretty young, so I dunno most things the older shaded do...but it’s way better to have something to do than not, because if you don’t, you blank.”

Huh. “Blank?”

She nods, a bit more solemn now. “Y’know, stop remembering. Things, places, who you are. You become blank. Nothing there. That’s the WORST thing ever. Some of the older guys say it’s a punishment or a curse. Some say that’s just how things are. I don’t know, but whenever you have something to do, it feels...great, like your head’s SO clear...you remember everything, because even if for the loosest reason, you have a REASON to remember. I think.”

Very strange… “Miss Yvrace?” Hm? You turn to see one of the generals. “I appreciate your attempts at gaining information from the captive, but I’m afraid I, er…” you squint at him, and he appears to lose his nerves, turning away briefly as he clears his throat.

“Hey!” Before you can respond proper, Fredrique hops from behind the man to your side. “Uh, Prince was wondering if you could scout a bit for him!”

Gah. Well, he was paying… “We’ll continue this later,” you offer, to which she nods. You’re going to have to work on that shoe thing...

By the time you see the city limits (which honestly looks like one or two massive stone buildings with a massive amount of rooms, along with more ramshackle huts and buildings typical of the area), you’re wondering if maybe you can’t do something about that in a fight...maybe if you were to try to manipulate your shields a bit better…

A sudden blackness- some sort of shadowy fireball- interrupts your thoughts as it suddenly appears in the air to your east, careening through and slamming into the inner city limits among screams as a plume of blackness shoots up into the sky. Soon, the sounds of steel and carnage can be heard in the gloom as you get closer step by step.

Prince is already yelling orders to his men to prepare to charge once they get close enough, fixing crossbows and lancers. Izumi takes a breath, preparing herself, and the two Lizardkin have already started to run off, much to one general’s protest.

>Stick with the Lizardfolk. You might as well be the speartip.

“I’m going to back them up! You lot show up when ready!” you yell fiercely, before taking off in a big leap forwards to catch up. You see exactly where they’re going for- it seems like they’re angling for the main road to the city outskirts.

There’s a massive group of shadows, of course, flanked by a number of Shaded that...they seem to have a number of weapons- steel claws, swords, spears, to name a few. You can see in the distance there’s a number of archers staying back near the outskirts, and near the river. They stand in formation, launching flaming arrows- a dangerous tactic, and a classic one.

“We need to eliminate the archers!” Si-Han yells. “Rally the defenses!”

“You get your soldiers! I’ll take the archers!” Kri-Yan confirms. “Yvrace, with me if you please!”

Sure, why not. You follow her wordlessly. “I have noticed you have the gift of flight. Could you perhaps provide a distraction?”

You don’t like the idea of essentially being skeet…but you can see what she’s going for- if you cause chaos up above, she can cause it down below before they can notice…that is, if they’re distractible enough.

She’s a maybe. I’d like to see what else she could do before we make a decision. Personally, I’d like to see either a Weaver (for stealth and/or rituals) or a guy (so he can hang out with Jago, maybe the blood knight guy?) to take the spot.

Fine. You’ll just have to be quick and loud about it. You’re going to need a running jump, though…

As you careen towards the firing lines (you could really do with an updraft or something), you can make up their formation a bit better- 5 rows of ten archers each, it seems; with a few individuals in the back serving as lieutenants and likely spotters of some sort. You don’t have enough time to make any tricky plays, though- you’ve got seconds to strike before they notice, or let loose another barrage before you strike with your own.

Fortunately, they’re so focused on the targeting that they don’t see you swoop in to the first lines; your quick magiblasts take the lines by total surprise as the first and second lines are blasted apart- maybe one or two wildly fired arrows make it into the air from them as the rest immediately begin scrambling for cover, yelling as the officers in the back try for order from the rear.

They nearly get it with the second and third lines, who both manage to let loose their arrows- this time towards YOU, and you have to take time to dodge a few too-close-for-comfort shots- you’re still no aerial ace, and it’s only your height that prevents any arrows from actually hitting you- had you come in lower, that might’ve been worrisome…

Fortunately, their misses allow you time to circle back to begin a pass, and a few stray blasts rock the rearmost line and force the middle lines to scatter; causing the officers and remaining archers to try to retreat- just to begin to run into the grinder that is Si-Han.

>Si-Han can likely handle the remaining archers herself; you can go reinforce the charge.

Alright, you’re pretty sure that she can handle things from there on in- you didn’t see any close-combat specialists nearby, so hopefully there’s no immediate major threats. Instead, you need to-

A sudden muffled thunder, and another black ball of shadow seems to materialize out of nowhere in the air, before launching off at an angle and careening deep into the city. Right- you need to see to that, next. Although the fact that there was no clear launch point...that’s going to cause issues. Still, you think you know enough about this world to understand that something that big would need to be made by a ritual. Which means they’d need some space.

They’ve got to be out here somewhere- the question is just where…

A quick scan of your immediate surroundings shows nothing but willow trees and dangerous swampland- they could be in any direction and largely hidden by the environment, considering that it doesn’t seem to take THAT many to make a ritual work. You’re going to have to pick a direction and hope for the best.

To your relief, it only takes a bit of searching before noticing an odd humming noise nearby. As quiet as you can make yourself while squelching through the soft ground, you creep as close as you can. About fifteen or twenty yards away from you, you can clearly see a LARGE ritual circle, at least 1 meters in diameter, and unusual in that it’s clearly domed with some sort of dark, yet translucent magical force. Ten ritualists surround it at the moment. Eight of them seem to be focusing power, while the last two are pointing at something in the center, and subtly moving their fingers- as though drawing something in thin air.

You don’t have an angle on all of them, unfortunately; you can barely see the existence of two or three of them thanks to a few trees in your way, but the magical dome provides just enough of a reflection for you to identify and make an accurate headcount. They all seem to be outside the dome in order to power it as well, thank goodness. However, if there are any defenders outside your viewpoint, you can’t tell. You didn’t sense anyone on approach, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to worry about...

Your musing comes to an end, though, when you see a small speck of shadowy energy take shape in the center of the dome, and already you think it’s growing. So that’s how they do it...

At the very least, they haven’t noticed you- for now. No matter what you decide, it’s unlikely you can down them all in one fell swoop- whether due to some being on the other end of the dome, or just out of line of sight, or something else.

Well, considering the terrain, it’ll be risky for you to try any complicated maneuvers- even if you were to try and fly, the undergrowth is a bit much to chance. You COULD try to hit a couple of them and scare them off, but that’s just as likely a temporary solution. You’re going to need to find a way to take them all down at once, regardless of if you can see them of not, some kind of- oh.

Flux Wave, duh. If it worked properly, you should be able to knock them sideways and maybe even mess the magic barrier up. Then again...could do a lot worse than that, but, heck. Still probably the best option. They won’t even see it coming until it’s too late.

You’re just going to have to focus and…unfocus. And again, and not, and as your mana cycles and shifts...

...It’s getting easier, you have to admit, as you expel the waves from you. Wonder if one day you could direct it, or at least maybe centralize it somehow…destabilizing shots, maybe?

Regardless, you hear shouts of alarm and dismay, and groans shortly afterwards as most collapse; you can hear something warble and shatter like glass, and you find yourself a touch worried as there a loud whining sound- and suddenly a massive burst erupts from the centerpoint. It’s not a massive conflagration, thank goodness, more like a giant smoke balloon bursting, but it’s enough to make you grit your teeth and the old tree you were hiding behind crack from the force, showering you in splinters and painful energy from the shadow magic blown your way.

When you open your eyes, you huff in approval. The ritualists are out for the count- you think a couple might still even be alive. Most of them, including the two ‘spotters’, are clearly gone, though, their bodies shredded even from that small piece of energy. Potent stuff…heck, you’ve even got a couple scratches. Nothing major, they’re shallow and will heal by the fight’s end, but impressive nonetheless. Now, if you could do that with a bit less area of effect…

>Current Mana: 8,750/12,500

Coool. Hopefully directing it would either make it cheaper or more potent at the target as well.

Good enough for now, you figure as you leave the area. Now you need to make your way back up to the front lines and see how the fight’s going there...the sounds of war are still echoing plentifully, and you can even see there’s parts of the city that are clearly under siege, even from here. You’re going to need to step in and fast…

Like you said, that wasn't a hire per se, but it also appealed to one of Miranda's weaknesess; that it was a trapped soul and there were little chances of it being freed on its homeworld.

> if you recall we shot down a mad scientist trying to go there herself.
Superhero and Lysol babysitter squad you got me.
That doesn't count because like you said, she wanted to go there herself. Also, we knew we could bring people to the intersection from the beginning. For example, Handler was expecting us to bring the Gnome from the lunar mission that knew how to make potions (we didn't because she was married and the husband was dead weight)

While you’re pretty sure Prince is taking care of himself, you aren’t so sure about the individuals you’re here to watch- the High Judicator himself. You’re going to need to push quickly and try to find him. There’s not going to be any particular way to know it, buuuut...well, considering the two you’ve meet, you get the feeling you’ll know him when you see him.

Fastest way to get over there, of course…

...You’re starting to really get used to flying, you have to admit. Wonder if there’s a way to get that on you a bit more permanently. You’re not exactly keen on getting any kind of surgery, but maybe so long as you’re on this self-improvement kick you might be able to figure something out with that...some sort of rocket boot technique or something, maybe. You’re not used to firing anything from your feet, although you’ve done it once or twice...bah, too many thoughts for later.

The air is smoky as the prior work that the archers put in is taking real effect; while it helps keep you in the air and masked from sight thanks to updrafts, you find yourself having to take special care in not causing friendly fire- you can put down far less cover on your way than you’d hoped, and your own sight is blurred a bit. However, you know the general direction you need to go in, and that’s going to have to be good enough.

Fortunately, the skies clear a bit after you get past a few houses- you swear you see a flash of something moving impossibly quick for the locals, away from the flames. Izumi most likely, and carrying something…

Letting that lie, you quickly touch down in the easternmost area of the city that was labeled the Judicator Halls on your map; they seem mostly untouched, save for a few fallen Shaded that clearly sought to try and surprise the guard here. There’s a couple of fallen warriors, but for the most part, the running around and yelling here seems to be more orderly than panicked. The largest amount of guards seem to be focused around one building in particular, larger and definitely more ornate, a combination of stone and woodwork to make an artistic audience hall...you think.

>>
>>3245070
As you land, you’re quickly greeted with spears wielded by angry and armored guards, before you hold up your hands in submission. “I’m on your side! Kri-Yan knows me! Did he make it here already?!”

Hearing your words, the guards ease up a bit, looking to each other. Finally one, with a bit more of a head crest on him, speaks. “He has yet to return to us. You say you wish to aid us?”

“I’m with the human Prince’s retinue,” you explain quickly. “We’ve been helping drive the shadows back, if you haven’t realized. I’m here to make sure your High Judicator is safe.”

“We have,” the crested speaker growls. “And we have no time for determination. The High One is none of your concern,” he says; and you don’t need to be a master at reading body language to know that he’s nervous of you at the moment; your wings and general countenance doesn’t seem to be doing you any favors when you’re by yourself… “He and his will be taken to an area that is safe, where he can recover- go aid the warriors if your purpose is as you say!” You’re pretty sure with how he sped up, he didn’t mean to mention any ‘recovery’ necessary.

>Let it go, it sounds like he’ll be fine eventually. Get back to the Prince and his men.

“Look,” you decide to try, “if he’s sick or injured, I can heal him. It’s a natural ability of mine, and it’ll be way quicker than any ritual you lot could-”

“We do NOT have time for debate!” He shouts angrily, warily jabbing his spear in your direction. “And I will not entrust the High One to magics not our own, where we cannot assure his safety! Begone! Distract us no longer!” Damnit. “Guards! Progress?!”

“Ready and waiting, Lord Commander!” one of them says smartly.

“Then away from here!” He waves, keeping an eye on your. “Travel swiftly and strongly!” At his word, a number of guards race off, towards a rearmost outer hallway. “Now, as for you-”

You have to stifle a groan. People like this were sooooo annoying to deal with. “I’m telling you, I’m here to-”

However, the both of you are soon distracted by loud shouting- several of the forces that were still there were pointing at something...something BIG sailing through the air. And FAST, too!

It smashes into the wall with sudden aplomb, sending chunks of rock and stone everywhere...at first. What comes through next, though, is a throng of...damn, are these Shaded elves?

Long, longer teeth and ears than normal, that cracked, cement-like skin everywhere on their bodies now, wild manes of hair spread every which way. Blood red gazes meets you as they immediately descend on the guards and yourself with a ferocious war cry and loping mobility- almost like the shadows you’ve been fighting, but far better armed, and lusting for a battle with a mind that still recognizes tactics...

“FORMATION!” The guard captain yells as he barely parries an axe swing by one coming close. He’s quick to gut it, before roaring out more orders. “GIVE THEM NO QUARTER!”

Funny thing about fighters. In sudden circumstances, they’re very good at reading body language, and understanding wordless situations. It’s been all too often two individuals, not necessary allies, but not enemies, understand that there’s a situation that needs to be handled before they can get back to whatever issue they had been at odds about initially.

This was one of those times. In this circumstance, no words between you were shared as you both saw the problem in front of you. The capitan merely charges forwards, while you ready your halberd.

Combined with the remaining guard presence, it’s easy to see why they hadn’t quite managed to breach the area fully- these lizards are voracious warriors, and frankly you wouldn’t be surprised if the captain was one of the Ko-Korath. As well as he held himself earlier, he has a distinct type of combat you can only call ‘restrained savagery’. No body part of his is unusued; teeth and tail are as much weapons as his legs, arms, and spear as he stabs, rips, and gouges with precision and direction.

You’re not keen on letting them get the drop on your as well; although the guard have much of the problem in hand, you end up having to fend off a number of wild Shaded elves on your own- slavering almost like wild dogs, they’re a far cry from the elves you’ve fought already, or even Carrang. Is this what they’re trying to avoid? Yikes. Still, it makes them easier, but not the easiest, especially when you tear off a limb and they keep coming- the first few got a knock in or two before you realized that for whatever reason, they wouldn’t let a little thing like ‘pain’ stop them.

However, as brutal as the fight is, it’s also short, and in maybe ten or so minutes (time moves differently when you’re in a fight, you swear), the courtyard is cleared...technically. There’s more BODIES, though, for sure.

Near-Feral Dark Elves. Not a new one, perse, but admittedly uncommon.

I'm guessing that was one of the "ramming squads" mentioned in >>3239051
(based on that post we'll still need to deal with the second group of ritualists)

Superhero world we only interacted with secretaries.

At least one person tried to have us recruit Lysans sister

>>3244999
>we didn't because she was married and the husband was dead weight
Well, that’s just wrong. The husband was the master potion maker, the goblin only made basic potions with less potency that what her husband could make.

>if you recall we shot down a mad scientist trying to go there herself.
That was because she had a FutureSight that we were tasked to recover. Sal only said we had to recover it; the Dealmakers wouldn’t have cared if she made it to the Intersection. She would have been made to pay dues or die, but wouldn’t have been allowed to keep the FutureSight.
Sal wanted us to take the FutureSight and not let the woman get to the Intersection, because he wanted to keep the loss and recovery of the FutureSight a secret so that it could be used as blackmail material; it would have lost that value if the woman came to the Intersection and the other Dealmakers learned of how she did it.

Before you can muse on that much more, though, a buzzing comes through your head- that’d be Izumi calling. “Yeah?” you quickly answer to a confused capitan as you take out your Murmur Stone. “Sitrep?”

“Got a bit of an issue,” is the immediate response. “I’m seeing rapid insertion forces in multiple areas coming in hot! They’ve done away with the finesse!”

Great. “Like they ever had it. We’ve dealt with one, managed to break into the Judicator’s Hall. Few fatalities, few casualties. Locations?”

“Two to the north near your position; flanked by mounted infantry and armored. Eyes on two more incoming parties near the south end; big massive wooden wagons with external riders!” Great. You’ve got to pick and choose, now. Although you didn’t think they had this kind of logistics system, you don’t have time to question how. The royals are out of the city, but you still have to punt these idiots out...

>Action!

Leaving this up for a few hours, there's an event I'm going to I completely forgot about.

The massive wagons will be slower. Also, if their mounted infantry then they'll probably charge on to drop them off close to us. While they're charging we can disrupt their charge with a horizontal light barrier at ankle height for the Horses to run into. Then we can crush them quickly and leave the stragglers to be mopped up while we bounce to the wagons after.

Maybe try to make the barrier long and thin instead of wide to conserve mana.

Go after the ones in the north, and use magi-waves to cut them down. They have limited mobility in city streets.

worried about the contents of those wagons

And hopefully the locals can figure out how to slow down the wagons.
>>
>>3250917
Well I figure we can disrupt the group of individuals enough for the locals to counter-charge them and handle that while we fly over to deal with the wagons.

We don't have to win the fight, we just have to make it winnable for allied forces.

So we stick around just long enough then we take on the big dudes we probably do have to stick around and beat completely.

Does that mean that Izumi is going after the different group?
