/qst/ - Quests

One sunny morning, you finds yourself getting up from bed and preparing a breakfast for two. Looking through the fridge, you find a few eggs and some ham. A signature classic combo of yours that anyone who's eaten it has only sung high praises of. Of course, the only person besides you that’s eaten your cooking is…

“Morning, bro!” A young girl calls out.

“Hey, Aya. Oh, you’re already all set to go, huh?”

“Yeah, well my teacher said that I should probably show up early for my first class this year. Well I guess she’s not my teacher anymore? Does she still count as my teacher if I haven’t met my new one yet, bro?”

“How the- how should I know? I mean, I guess?”

“Or maybe she stopped being my teacher as soon as I finished my class last year?”

“Look, Aya, just eat your food, it’s done and if you keep babbling -”

Your exchange is stopped by a sudden knocking at the door.

“This early? I coulda sworn I paid the landlord…”

You approach the door, only to find a dark haired youth facing you down.

“Are you Shinya Izumo?”

>”I might be, I might not be. Who’s asking?”
>”Hey buddy, I think you got the wrong door.”

"Do I... look like I come from the Eastern lands to you? My name's Leo Burnwright." You say, pointing to your blonde hair and blue eyes.

"Don't play dumb with me. I know your dad was from the Eastern lands, even if your mom wasn't. So I'll ask again, are you the son of Takaya Izumo?"

”Pff. I might be, I might not be. Who’s asking?” You respond.

“The name’s Xavier. Gotta admit, I was expecting the son of one of the greatest fighters in the realm to look strong. But…”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

You attempt to close the door, but Aya walks up by your side, curious as to who the new visitor is.

“What’s our dad got to do with you?”

The young man twirls his hair, smirking confidently in your general direction. Looking at him, you can see he’s wearing some rather... expensive looking clothes.

“You haven’t told me why you’re here.” You ask him.

“Well, I wanted to ask a simple favor. That is… I want you to train me in the ways of the Invincible Fist.”

You yell incomprehensible butcherings of your family’s native tongue at him and begin to close the door. As you do, he attempts to protest, but you shout:

“And your hair SUCKS, too!”

Before slamming the door in his face.

“Bro…” Aya says. “Why’d you have to go and do that? He didn’t seem like a bad guy… Actually, he seemed kinda...”

“Kinda what, Aya?”

“Kinda...” she mumbles. “Kinda cute…”

Deep within your soul, a resting beast reawakens.

“Aya, my dear little sister…” You begin.

Aya, looking at your face, realizes what she’s done and becomes incredibly horrified.

“Oh no, not again bro! Please!”

“It seems I’ve failed you! Yet again! And so I must re-educate you… with a stern talking to! If you think some dandy type like that wearing clothes that are clearly overcompensating for something else is ‘cute’, I’m afraid I must tell you that you…”

“You should be focusing on SCHOOL! Not boys. Do you hear me, Aya? That’s it, go finish your breakfast, I’ll be done in ten, no five minutes…”
You crack your knuckles and breathe heavily.

“You’ve disgraced my sister.”

“I what?”

“And so I’m gonna pull that stupidly long hair of yours from your head.”

“Are you saying you’re gonna fight me?”

Xavier laughs.

“Well good! That’s great! That’s exactly what I’VE been itching to do! Because if you ask me, you don’t look like you’re exactly in practice yourself. In fact, I think I can take you on! So bring it on, Mr. Never-gonna-break-out-of-my-dad’s-shadow!”

"What the hell was that!? T-this isn't over!"

Xavier is defeated!

Aya stares at you blankly.

“Right, Aya. Shouldn’t we get going? Your future won’t wait up for you, you know.”

“Right…”

“Something wrong?”

“Well, bro… Something’s been off about you for a while now. I feel like… You’re sad, or something?”

“I’m not sure I follow.”

“Umm… well, maybe I just don’t get it.”

“Ha, well, that’s okay. Let’s get going.”

The two of you walk a rather short distance away to Aya’s school. It’s not very large, nor as prestigious as you’d hope for her, but at least she’s getting an education. At least one of you can. A single tear wells inside of your eye as she bids you goodbye for now. But now that she’s gone, it’s time for you to…

*crack*

Your thought is interrupted by a rather loud and obnoxious noise.

“You look a little young to be a parent, pal.”

The source of the noise appears to be a bearded man sporting a denim jacket as well as some jeans and a cap of sorts, sipping away at a can of… something.

You continue to walk away, but he continues to follow.

“You seem like a good kid, responsible and all. So with that in mind, I’ve only got a few questions.”

You attempt to ignore the man, walking to no direction in particular.

“You’re headed to… ‘work’, right?”

You freeze for a moment, wondering what he’s referring to. By the emphasis on "work", he seems to know things he shouldn't. If he knows, then...

“I wonder how your sister would feel… If she knew that her big brother was supporting her with money he got for beating someone within an inch of their life?”

A cold sweat comes to you.

The man’s expression turns blank for a moment.

“You don’t know a thing, let alone anything about how close my sister and I are. I mean, if you did, you probably would’ve known that she’s all for her bro proving that he’s the toughest guy around.”

“And so you resort to illegal street fighting?”

“Not like anyone’s using the arena anymore, right, old man?”

“Yeah, well, that thing went away for a damned good reason. But that’s besides the point. Your dad would be asha-”

“My dad? What’s he gonna do, kick my ass? He’s out of the picture, and that leaves me to step in for my sis. We’ll do whatever it takes to survive.”

The man contemplates for a moment. However, soon, he begins to let out a great laugh, pointing his can of whatever at you.

“Whatever it takes… Except use your dad’s techniques, right? You know, I told a kid that he could’ve learned a lot from you. He probably would’ve paid a lot too!”

>”You mean that dude whose ass I kicked?”

You attempt to walk away, ignoring the strange man’s remarks. Even so, you find it troubling that he knows about your job. That would imply he’s been there, which means… He may be a fighter himself. But this man? He looks like he’d probably just sit down at a fight drinking that crap and complain about how back in his day, fighting used to be noble or something.

“Alright, how about this?” The strange man begins,

“I’ll train you on how to fight. You won’t owe me a thing. You can show up more or less whenever you want. I’ll be by a local bar. It’s called ‘Bones’. Ask for the owner, Boonie, he’s a good friend of mine. Or don’t. If I see you around, I could teach you a trick or two, might help you out. I just… Wouldn’t like to see Takaya’s kids go down a path they don’t have to. I’ve seen what happens when someone makes the wrong choices in life. You could just make more of yourself, if you really tried, you know?”

Is he still going on about this crap? Well, it’s… strange information, but you might as well park it in the back of your head alongside all the other junk. The man finally decides to leave you alone as you walk away.

For now, the only thing really on your mind is heading to “work”. You’ve been doing this for a few years now, and you’re more or less known for being the reckless fighter that you are, managing to scrap your way through some fights. You don’t exactly work for anyone there, though you do see a few regulars who pay to watch and bet on which guy doesn’t hit the ground first. That leads you to wonder why you haven’t seen the strange guy from before.

Well, it doesn’t matter, does it? You’re here, and you’re going to fight to win some money. The only question is now, are you ready?

The same baritone voice from before exclaims "If one of you two jokers doesn't go down right now, we're calling in Jock, and I'm sure neither of you wants to go against the big man, so get going!"

Jock... One of the few men who's consistently clobbered you throughout your time in the ring. In no small part responsible for some of the more serious injuries you've sustained over the years. He's only reserved for a fighter who manages to consistently win consecutive matches, or to provide some entertainment for a match between two, well, "jokers".

You find yourself remembering a time where Jock inflicted an injury upon you that left your right arm useless for a couple of months, horrifying Aya.

If you were more focused, more refined, you'd very well be able to beat such a man, and yet...

You find yourself recalling yet another memory...

"Shinya, have I ever showed you this technique? It was created by an ancestor of ours who was born without the ability to see. Though not physically potent, so gifted was he in sensing the spiritual energy around him, that despite his blindness, he could strike with utmost accuracy..."

Both strikes connect with the panicked man, who is struck twice in the chest, flailing backwards with an unflattering "UNGYAAUGH!"

The Scrawny Man is defeated!

The crowd suddenly turns excited, cheering.

The voice from before continues:

"Now that that chump's out of the way, bring in the next one!"

Another man is tossed into the center, still looking a bit nervous, but not nearly as much as the previous one.

It looks like you've got no choice but to keep going. As you're the winner of the previous fight, you get to strike first.

You feel... ambivalent regarding your need to use a technique that reminds you of your father.

You decide to go in for a regular punch.
>>
Rolled 3 (1d3)

>>3223862
It connects, dealing a significant amount of damage to your enemy, sending him staggering back. However, the man seems to still have the will to fight left in him.

He gets up and prepares his attack.
>>
>>3223874
He only has 2HP left, right? Let's end this in the surefire way to win.

Rolled 2, 2 = 4 (2d2)

>>3223874
It connects, striking you in the chest. Painful, but nothing you won't survive.

He doesn't look like he's got much left in him, all it would take is one punch...

But what if you miss again? Is it really enough to just swing recklessly?

But, to use your dad's technique again would be like...

>>3223880
>>3223887
You dismiss the thought, and go in to finish the man.

"HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
>>
>>3223892
The man receives the full force of the blow, coughing up blood as he flails back into the crowd.

The crowd seems rather excited to watch this show of brutality.

But just as before, the man with the baritone voice exclaims:

"Alright, bring in the next guy! Think you can last, kid?"

A more confident man enters the ring, raising his fists up.

The crowd lets out excited cheers, but they are quickly hushed by the man with the baritone voice.

"Alright, alright, punk. So you took down 3 small fries. That gets you just a bit of the pay. But... Don't you want a little more?"

You contemplate the wounds you've just sustained.

"Just take down this next guy, and you get a bonus? Whaddya think, not bad, huh?"

Usually, just beating 3 guys up and putting on a show is enough for a decent chunk of cash, but maybe one more round wouldn't hurt?

However, on the other hand... You might not be in good enough shape to take on one of the tougher guys in the ring.

You consider your options.

After what seems like an eternity of hesitation, you ultimately decide that you’ve had enough of fighting for today. You’re not sure what came over you. Perhaps it was fear, simple hesitation, laziness, or perhaps some other negative emotion restraining you from moving forward. Whichever the case, with what strength you have left to call upon from deep within yourself, you ultimately decide that it is for the best to call it off.

However, this decision is not without its consequences.

The crowd boos you, one of them throwing a sharp object at you, cutting your right cheek. You aren’t sure what exactly the object was, but it doesn’t really matter, as you try your best to ignore the pain of the sudden cut. In spite of the crowd’s disfavor of your choice today, you are allowed to leave.

Returning to the streets, you take a moment to reflect on how strange your day has been so far. A strange young man with an ego far too big for his ability came to challenge you to teach him your generations old techniques, which you yourself hesitate to practice. And why is this? You contemplate. Perhaps it’s your fear of being unable to surpass your father’s legacy. Maybe it’s even your hatred for the man. After everything you’ve been put through, you’ve got the right to be angry, right? You don’t owe anyone anything.

Except, perhaps, Aya. She’s given you a reason to keep going. Maybe it’s time that you put your skills and strength to good use. You may not be able to afford an education, but it’s enough that she can.

And that strange man. He seems to have known of your father, at the very least. Though you’re unable to ascertain his intentions quite yet, after a bit of thinking, you consider the possibility that he may have been an associate from your father’s old fighting days. Although, you don’t remember much of those days. The days when your father was a respected, even moderately wealthy man. When you had a brighter future ahead of you. When your mother was still around.
>>
>>3239540
You decide to go for a walk to simmer in these thoughts a while longer, and then for a jog to get them out of your head. And so, as the day goes on, you ultimately return to Aya’s school, and wait patiently for her to emerge from the school.

A few minutes go by, and…

Nothing.

You decide to wait a while longer.

More time passes by, and…

Still, nothing. You see a few children leave, nothing remarkable about them. But, still, no Aya. That’s odd, to say the least. She’s usually pretty good about time. Well, maybe she’s talking a teacher’s ear off about something.

On the first day?

Well, she is pretty inquisitive, even about minor things. You decide to wait a little longer.

Until, eventually, what seems to have been an hour passes, with Aya nowhere in sight. Even for Aya, this isn’t…

You decide to enter the school and look around, going door to door asking if they’ve seen Aya around. Some teachers respond claiming they don’t know who you’re talking about, others claiming that there are many children who match the description of “short girl with light brown hair and dark brown eyes”. Finally a couple who stuck around for some sort of after school programs who claimed that while she had expressed interest in joining such programs, she “wanted to run it by her brother”, insisting that you would be waiting for her not long after she got out.

A deep feeling of dread washes over you. Where could Aya have gone? What could have happened to her? She couldn’t just be waiting at home, she wanted to wait for you to pick her up so you could go back together. What should you do?

>
>>
>>3239542
>Search around for clues or hopefully Aya
Anything that looks like a struggle or something wrong happened there.
Failing that I guess call the cops?
(Also QM I'd reccomend a new thread, you're auto saging here).
>>
>>3239552
(Yes, my sincere apologies for a lack of update. At some point soon a new thread will be started.)
>>
Trying to maintain your composure, you attempt to search for Aya. Maybe she got distracted and wandered off… No, she wouldn’t be so careless. Even in the worst case scenario, she might have left some sort of clue for you to be able to follow. Looking around, you find yourself looking through the hallways. Maybe something from her backpack, something with her name on it? Anything?

Nothing.

You find yourself by the track field, wandering around, still frantically searching for anything she could have left behind. You spend what must have been an hour checking for anything suspicious in the bleachers, the track itself, and the surrounding area. And then, you find it. Or rather, them. Two apparently torn pieces of clothing. One, a dark gray cloth, seems to resemble the school uniform from the school. This could be Aya’s!

But, perhaps it isn’t. Even if it does seem torn, that isn’t a guarantee that it was hers. However, it does seem like a potentially strong lead. However, the other, slightly larger piece of cloth catches your eye. It’s white, decorated with a word you recognize as “Heaven”. What kind of dork wears something that says “Heaven”?

No, that’s not the thought you should be thinking right now. This could be another lead, so you hold on to it.

Not having much else to go on, you decide to do the only thing left to think of. Report to the authorities.

An impressively large building, the station known locally as the “Guardian Tower”, houses the city’s finest. True to its name, it towers above most of the city, acting as a symbol of its vigilance in the city. Hopefully, they’ll be able to help. You enter the building, and are met with what could only be described as a large lobby of sorts. Unsure of what exactly to do, you get in line behind what seems to be a line of other citizens with something to report. From the corner of your eye, however, you seem to notice something peculiar.

It’s a young man with a bandage on his face yelling angrily at an officer.

Wait a second.

That’s the annoying bastard from earlier! What was his name again, X… Xavier? Suddenly, troubling thoughts begin to form in your mind. He couldn’t have done something as petty as kidnap your sister for what happened earlier, could he? Or, maybe he knows something that you don’t? But then, if he is just a dud, you might be wasting valuable time you could be using to report what happened.

What should you do?

>Confront Xavier.
>Continue waiting.
>>
>>3239744
>Confront Xavier
>>
>>3239918
This can’t just be a coincidence. There’s got to be some sort of connection between Xavier’s presence and Aya’s disappearance. Was it for some sort of revenge? All sorts of thoughts begin to run through your mind as you move closer to him, until eventually you find yourself just inches away from him. There, he turns to face you, when he turns a shade of white, before beginning to yell angrily while pointing at you.

“That’s him, that’s the guy who hit me in the face!”

The officer, clearly exasperated, turns to face you.

“Sir, is this true? Did you hit this… man in the face?”

>”Are you this much of a coward? Did you really try reporting me to the authorities after you just showed up to bother me and my sister? What did you expect?”
>”Forget about this guy’s face, he kidnapped my sister!”
>”I hit him in the face, sure, but he deserved it. More importantly, there’s something worse going on and I need your help, officer.”
>
>>
>>3240329
>Never seen him before in my life. Now, my sister is missing. ..
>>
>>3240329
>>”Forget about this guy’s face, he kidnapped my sister!”
And when we inevitably get questioned further,
"Yes, he challenged me to a fight which we mutually consented to and I won fair and square. Now please, can we focus on finding my sister?"
>>
>>3240427
>>3240525

“Forget about this nobody and his problems, my sister’s gone missing!” You exclaim.

While the phrase seems to catch the officer’s interest, it seems to evoke a strange expression upon Xavier’s face.

“She’s… gone missing?” He asks, bewildered.

“What, suddenly you care?” You respond.

The officer attempts to interrupt the two of you, but Xavier cuts him off.

“What, am I not allowed to be concerned over a missing kid or something?”

“No, that’s weird, man. I don’t even know you! And for all I know you could’ve been the one who did this to her!”

“Yeah, genius move by me, kidnap some girl I have nothing to do with and THEN go to the authorities to report an injury inflicted by her brother.”

“You WANTED to fight, didn’t you? It’s not my fault you can’t swing a punch to save your life.”

“Hey, you know what, I wasn’t the one who managed to lose his sister, so back off!”

The two of you begin to raise your fists in anger. However, the officer notices this and immediately gets in the way of the two of you, outstretching his arms. A strange energy seems to be emitting from his hands.

“Do I need to remind you two that you’re currently in one of the worst places to get into a fight? And let me get this straight, you ARE admitting to having hit this young man, right?”

You respond, “Yes, he challenged me to a fight which we mutually consented to and I won fair and square. Now please, can we focus on finding my sister?”

The officer stops and thinks for a moment.

“Consented fighting? Ah, what was the ruling to that, I forget… stupid technical laws...” He begins to mumble to himself.

“I said, can we PLEASE focus on finding my sister, I have two pieces of evidence… I think.”

“Hold on now, I think I’m going to have to arrest you. Fighting and injuring people isn’t legal, even if it’s consensual! There’s procedures for these kinds of things… I think.”

Xavier seems more frustrated with the officer than he does with you by this point.

“Look, man, I think finding a missing person is a little more important than my face, no matter how good looking it is. Don’t you agree?”
>>
>>3241791
“One thing at a time, young man! First things first, we gotta bring you in for - o-oh, Chief! W-what brings you down here today?”

Chief? But there’s no one else here…?

Suddenly, you find a tall and imposing man with blonde hair dressed in a purple suit standing next to you.

“Just here to look around, and what should I find other than Mr. Chapman’s son, as well as… Oh, I don’t believe I’ve met you before, young man! And yet, there is something oddly… familiar about you. But, I can’t quite put my finger on it.”

“M-Mr. Foxcroft!” Xavier exclaims.

Who is this guy?

“Ah, but I don’t believe I’ve introduced myself!” The man chuckles. “I’m Walter Foxcroft, more or less Chief of this place. Don’t let anyone else’s impression of me fool you, I’m quite the easy going guy… When I want to be! Now, what was happening here?”

After a brief rundown of the situation, Walter nods his head and speaks.

“Allow me to take over for a moment. So you say you sister was kidnapped, and these are your only leads? We’ll need to take these in for investigation, but rest assured we will do our best to analyze what we can and see if we can find any new information.”

Walter’s eyes have a determined and confident look, almost entirely reassuring you that Aya will be okay. However, he continues to speak.

“But from experience, I can tell you one thing. That white piece you had there most likely belongs to a certain… what are they called, guilds? Dojos? Schools? Something like that. This one in particular is known as the Fist of Heaven. Does that sound familiar to you, young man?”

Fist of Heaven? You seem to vaguely recall a name like that from your younger days. They were… a rival combat style to the Invincible Fist. But beyond that, is there really some sort of connection between this information and the events of today?

>”That does sound familiar, but how do you know so much?”
>”Do you think they’re related, Chief Foxcroft?”
>”You don’t think my sister got kidnapped by a bunch of weird fist fanatics, do you?”
>
