Hello /qst/, this is my first quest so any feedback will be very much appreciated.

It's the 407th year of the so-called Gunpowder Age that started when dwarfs came to this world through a rip in time and space. Before they showed us their technology and the deadly potential of gunpowder, humans and elves of this world fought each other with steel weapons and powerful battle magic. Now, 4 long centuries later the world is a very different place. Fractured duchies turned into kingdoms, kingdoms into empires...you know the drill. Battle mages who used to dominate battlefields were replaced by mass-produced artillery, tanks and machine guns. But even in this new age magic has its place - telepaths and clerics are needed like never before! Of course, not only magic users are needed in the ever victorious Tornland Imperial Army. Looks like after decades of peace the world is finally going to war again. And it ain't gonna be pretty.

You are currently serving in the 49th Infantry Brigade of the 36th Infantry Division, freshly assigned to the Tornland-Uspeshan front. Additionally, you are a member of an Assault Company, a type of formation which serves as a vanguard of the Imperial advance. The war rages on for almost a full month now and so far the Empire is gaining a lot of ground against both Uspesh and Krazzak. Fresh divisions (like the 36th) are constantly flowing towards the frontlines to make sure Tornland keeps this momentum going. This is a new type of war, an industrial one. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides fight massive battles using weapons and tactics never seen before. You are only one of those poor souls, how much impact can you really make?

Player's Characters and rules are in the next post.

Modern war is all about variety. There are dozens of different roles and all of them serve crucial purposes. Nothing illustrates it better, than the Assault Companies, special formations that achieve their objectives through a combination of heavy weaponry, aggressive leadership and magic.
Each of those soldiers is a valuable asset to the company, but which one has what it takes to influence the outcome of this war and make it through alive?

>Konrad von Hohenberg, a young and ambitious officer fresh out of the academy, his undying energy and bravado earned him a position of an assault company leader, always carries his beloved officer sabre, a prestigious symbol of his rank
>Johan Schäfer, a middle-aged man with mysterious past, crazy enough to willingly enlist into an assault company, knows surprisingly well how to handle his rifle and grenades
>Theodor Sharzak, a dwarven engineer past his prime and a hard-working sapper, carries flamethrower because he can't be bothered to learn how to aim
>Amelia Weisseblume, a young cleric that always wants to help, she hoped to be assigned to a field hospital, but as a magic user she was immediately transferred to a more "suitable position". She carries a pistol, but secretly hopes she'll never have to use it
>Adalard Orto, an elf who comitted himself to studying battle magic, after decades of waiting he finally has a chance to test it, but he would rather stay at home. Sometimes called "Human cannon Adi"

Please keep all of these 5 characters in mind because when your current character dies (which may happen if you're unlucky with dices) you'll get to pick one of the remaining ones from the pool. Also, some rolls will be either high or low risk which will influence the difficulty of the roll. The overall pick rates of high and low risk rolls will influence the ending (unless all characters die which of course will result in a bad ending)
Feel free to ask any questions.

Especially if death is common, it will be fun to get to use some magic offensively.

"Move it, move it! We have a casualty!" - a loud shout pulls you out from the safety of your thought. You quickly notice two soldiers carrying...something, completely drenched in blood. As a student of magic arts you quickly recognize what happened to the poor fella. He used too much of his magical powers which made his body literally fall apart from the inside. Apparently it often happens to mages who try to block incoming artillery shell with a protective barrier. Your imagination runs wild coming up with brutal images of the same thing happening to you. Your skin turns pale. You are yet to see any actual combat, but you already have enough.
- "Oi, lass! Why are you so shocked? I thought even magical medics see a corpse or two before they go out into the real world!" - the voice of one of the soldiers from your company pulls you away from these dark thoughts. - "You sure you're a real magician and not some sort of a crook?"
This open mockery of your talent made you forget about the corpse of your fellow magic user. It's been like that since you've joined the company. Many soldiers, in a silent agreements, decided that the only girl in the entire unit will be an easy target for jokes and such. And so far they were proven right. Maybe it's time to change that?

>Say nothing and wait patiently for the company commander to come back to issue his first combat orders

You pretend to ingore the soldier's comments and quietly sit near your backpack, looking towards the commander's tent. After a short while you can see assault company commander Konrad von Hohenberg leaving the meeting, with some woman in an officer's uniform next to him. They exchange a few words after which Konrad walks towards his men with a smile on his face.
- "I have some excellent news for you! We've been granted the privilege of assaulting the village of Locronan, standing between us and the regional capital of Magnier. There is going to be a whole lot of an open ground between us and Whitepants (a slur used to describe Uspeshan soldiers) positions, but fear not, a few kind artillery boys is going to pound the ground around the village so create some holes for us." - Konrad pauses for a moment, scanning his soldiers. - "I'll be leading the charge to make sure you lot don't slack out there, we want to do this quick. The attack is at dawn, get some sleep. Dismissed...except you cleric girl, Amelia was it? Come with me for a moment."
You quickly follow your leader few meters away from the rest. Konrad looks around for a second, then shows you a crude drawing.
- "This is more or less the battlefield of Locronan. I want you to pick a position that will allow you to be as efficient as possible. I don't want to lose too many guys."
You can't help, but ask:
-"Why did we need to move away from the rest for you to show me this?
Konrad smirks and answers
-"I don't want to show that I care about them that much" - then he walks away.

Despite von Hohenberg's advice you were unable to get much sleep that night. The image of that poor mage was still sitting in your mind and the stress was doing its work aswell.
Just before dawn your unit finally started gathering for an assault to the rhytm of artillery guns pounding the poor guys holed up in that abandoned village. The overall plan was hilariously simple - wait for signal in the woods close to Locronan, sprint few hundred meters towards enemy positions and take them in short, yet brutal fight. Soon the bombardment was over and the only thing left was to wait for Konrad's whistle.
A voice from your left can be heard:
- "Hey miss, my pelvis is hurting, think you can do something with tha-"
A loud whistling sound pierced the forest as the first group charged towards the entrenched positions.
- "Maybe the artillery got them all..." - you think to yourself out lout only to be proven wrong a second later when first stormtroopers fell victim to the machine gun fire.
In fact, quite a few enemy troops survived the barrage and the fight quickly bogged down as frontline troops ducked for cover and started trading shots with the defenders. It wasn't long until you found yourself busy with running from shellhole to shellhole, treating those lightly wounded, removing bullets, stopping bleedings, easing pain etc. The enemy was kind enough to not fire too many bullets at you, the few that made their way towards you were easily deflected by your shield. In the first hour of the battle you casted your healing magic on atleast dozen different people. You were getting tiresome, but things weren't looking bad. You crawled back to the starting position and kept observing the struggle.

Just when your side was finally getting the upper-hand, an artillery shell exploded just few meters from your position, your quick reaction allowed you to raise your shield in time. You survived, but your head felt like it was ready to burst. Definitely an effect of overusing magic. Through explosions you managed to crawl into the nearest shellhole, with other soldiers kept in reserve who were now also running for their lives.
- "Why are they targeting the backline whywhywhywhy damnmyheadithurtswhywhy" - your thoughts were becoming incoherent, you were lying in a muddy shellhole for a moment, regaining your composure as shells kept exploding around you. Then you've realized.
- "If they pin us down with we cannot reinforce or heal the frontline. Counterattack..."
Suddenly the same soldier who joked about his pelvis slipped into your hiding spot. He looks at you with a blank stare, holding remains of his own arm.
- "Hey miss...you think...you can put it back?" - after these words he collapses, undoubtedly dead. You look at this scene with horror as you feel a slim stream of blood exiting your nose. Another side-effect of overusing magic.
- "This is insane. I...I must do something, the guys up front, they c-can't manage without me"
The shells keep falling down around you.

After some hesitation you make up your mind. What follows is the most intense few seconds of your life.Artillery rounds fly past you as you sprint towards the front. Few shells explode too close to comfort, but your shield holds. Unfortunately, by the time you slip into the commander's shellhole your head hurts so much you cannot form any coherent thoughts. You simply lie there, begging for the pain to go away, totally oblivious to people around you,
- "...you do that? ...you insane?" - an unknown voice finally forces you to lift your head a little. You see an elven mage, bleeding from his nose. He's surrounded by Konrad and several friendly soldiers that also hid themselves in the same hole. You look at the elf and smile a little.
- "Your nose...don't worry...help is here..." - you utter these words and put your hands towards his face. You quickly notice how red they are. No doubt the overuse of magic ripped your skin open in several places and caused a considerate amount of bleeding. Everyone looks at you with shock and pity as Konrad finally speaks.
- "Amelia...just please, stay here for a moment, alright? Everyone's feeling great, nobody needs help! The rest of you, fix your bayonets, We are going to counter their counterattack!"
You look at him dumbfounded as one of the soldiers bandages your arms. Seconds later everyone bursts from the shellhole towards enemy positions. The battle is about to get even more bloodier.
- "Nobody needs my help...no, that's not right, that's not right..."

Still on your knees, you look after the rest of your unit.
- "They'll be fine. Commander said it himself." - you think to yourself, at the same time almost collapsing face-first into the muddy ground. You use the last ounces of your strength to put your body in a comfortable position. You find the mud surprisingly comfortable. As your eyes shut and the sounds of explosions, gunfire and screams lull you to sleep, you can't help, but reflect on your current predicament. Despite the massive headache your thoughts are clear.
- "I simply wanted to work in a field hospital, but instead I'm stuck in this hell. How many battles until I die? How many battles until I go mad? No, no, no, that's not it. The people I treated today...what can surgeons and nurses several kilometers behind the frontlines do to help them? Only clerics and their magic can save these soldiers...maybe this is where I belong afterall..."

You fell asleep before you were able to notice. Your sleep was empty, completely devoided of dreams. Of course, it wasn't long until someone woke you up by poking your body. Soon you've heard a familiar voice of the elven mage.
- "I'm glad you took the commander's advice." - he smiles as he helps you to stand up. - "We did it, Amelia. The village is ours! Well, almost."
You quickly notice blood covering his lower face and his hands. He too, definitely went a little overboard with his magic. Both of you start walking towards the village passing dozens of corpses and resting soldiers.
- "Von Hohenberg watns to see you at the entrance to the church. He was pretty nervous. Be careful though, a few of them still lurk in some buildings, idiots refused to surren-" - he stops as he notices someone waving towards him.
- "Hey Adi, we've found a few in the postman's office! Can you hurl a fireball or two?"
- "These little errands are going to kill me much faster than any enemy action." - the elf sighs looking at his bloodied hand then hurries towards the voice of his comrade.

As you are left alone, you look towards the church which is definitely the biggest building in Locronan. Surprisingly enough, it's still standing mostly intact. You start to slowly walk towards it, but suddenly a figure exits a nearby building just a few meters away from you. It's an Uspeshan soldier, no older than 20 years old. His entire left side is covered in fresh blood, but he still carries a pistol. He takes an uncertain step towards you.

- "Please, stand still, I'm a cleric, I can help you!" - you scream and run towards the poor fellow, immediately forgetting about his gun or his allegiance. Perhaps still in shock the Uspeshan raises his gun and pulls a trigger.

You scream in pain as the bullet hits you in the leg. Before the young man has a chance to fire a second time you knock him down with your magic which used quite a bit of your power. You look down at your leg and notice that the bullet went right throught. Healing magic can easily fix this.
- "DAMNIT WHY WON'T YOU JUST STAND STILL!" - your scream surprises everyone, including the soldiers rushing to your aid. Filled with pain and anger you take a deep breath and limp towards the enemy soldier. You kick his handgun away from him and spend the next several minutes healing his wound while ignoring your own. His only response was mumbling "I'm sorry" during the entire process. With the young Uspeshan being taken prisoner by friendly troops you focused on healing your own wound. After a short while you were ready to report to Hohenberg. You marched towards the church still limping and still angry.

- "It was here, just like she said" - these were the first words you've heard after arriving at your destination. Konrad was holding an old book in his hands and talking to himself. He clearly didn't notice you.
- "Sir." - your voice was uncharacteristically shapr.
- "Oh, Amelia! Glad you're finally here!" - Konrad quickly closed the book. - "I want you to search this book for any signs of magic."
This order genuinely suprised you, but you went to work immediately. Disturbingly enough, you've found out that each and every page of this old book written in some old elvish dialect carried a small trace of magic. Unfortunately it was not enough to determine the type. After you shared your insights with Konrad he looked at the book with a worried face and quietly said:
- "Thank you. Dismissed." - then he immediately walked away, leaving you to your own thoughts. Looking at the ruins of the village you were glad that your first battle was finally over, but at the same time, you couldn't banish a feeling that something terrible was about to happen.
PS:Since I won't be able to continue the quest for the next day and a half therefore I think this is a good moment to gather some iniitial feedback. Share any thoughts you have about this quest. I don't really care for the character the thread has chosen, would rather follow along Konrad but thats fine.

Format a little better. Line break during dialogue when a new person speaks.

It'll also help to find a way to separate your meta talk and the story so it doesn't look like a compressed mess.

For instance:

- "Thank you. Dismissed." - then he immediately walked away, leaving you to your own thoughts. Looking at the ruins of the village you were glad that your first battle was finally over, but at the same time, you couldn't banish a feeling that something terrible was about to happen.

>>3285548 Absolutely this. Sometimes it's quite difficult to read your quest, better formating will do wonders. Still, I'm interested to see where this is going. I like this idea of various risks during the rolls, but with something like that it wouldn't hurt to announce the result of our rolls before continuing the narration.

I’m back and ready to continue the quest! Props for the feedback, lads.
From this point on I’ll sometimes post pieces of narration from Konrad’s perspective since he was the second most popular choice and deserves some spotlight too. Of course, you’re still going to play as Amelia.
----------------

-”Another favour?”
Konrad von Hohenberg leaned on a strong wooden chair looking curiously towards the opposite side of a foldable desk. Several days have passed since the battle of Locronan and the imperial officer was expecting this conversation ever since.

-”This will be the last one. Probably.” - a young female officer smiled towards her colleague. Her name was Erika von Glattekrone and she was the only child of a famous imperial general. She joined the army to not disappoint her father and continue the family’s long military tradition.

-”I already have my doubts about that. Get to the point.” - Konrad knew Erika for years. They graduated the same military academy and now they were assigned to the same division.

Erika’s pale finger pointed towards a map, lying on the desk.
-”Before we arrive at the regional capital of Magnier we need to cross the mighty Dunon forest. HQ plans to send out dozens of small scouting parties in advance of the main column to search the woods for any potential dangers. Uspeshan stragglers, goblin tribes – these sorts of things. I’m sure assault units like yours will participate in this operation.”

-”Where are you going with this, Erika? Want me to find another book for you?”

The woman smiled briefly.
-”Not quite. There is an old monastery located deep inside the woods with an ancient magical artifact hidden somewhere in its basement. A scepter of sorts.”

Konrad’s eyes opened wildly. A magical artifact? Hidden in some old ruins? How the hell does she knows that?
-”But...”

-”I’ll pull a few strings to make sure your unit gets assigned to the correct part of the forest. General’s daughter, remember?”

The assault company commander spent the next few moments silently contemplating the offer before finally responding.
-”Let me think about it. I don’t want to endanger my men to look for some magic sticks.”

Suddenly Erika jumped towards Konrad and grabbed both of his hands making him flinch a little in surprise. Her deep blue eyes were opened wide.
-”This artifact can greatly benefit the war effort! The Empire needs every advantage it can get and we will give it one on a silver plate! Think, Konrad! Think how this can advance our careers!”

The young man dropped his head down, clearly thinking about something.
-”Advance our careers...”

-”…any questions?”
Von Hohenberg looked upon a small group consisting mainly of soldiers that distinguished themselves during the company’s first battle. They are now going to form the bulk of his scouting party.
Of course, you are amongst them. Fortunately for you, during the last few days you've managed to regain most of your strength. Even your hands are looking almost normal again, with only a few scars still reminding you of the previous battle.

-”Excuse me sir...” - an old dwarf who up to this moment was very much silent, had suddenly risen up from a sitting position. - „Do you really want to us to go treasure hunting in a middle of the war to find something that may or may not exist?”
Shortly after a few other voices joined the dwarf in asking Konrad about the sense of their upcoming expedition. He allowed them to go on for a moment before answering.

-”We’ll have an official order to scout these ruins so we are going to do this thoroughly whether you like it or not. Simply treat this as a side-objective. And if you are still not convinced, let’s hear what our mages have to say.”

You look upon Adelard, the elven battle mage that helped you back in Locronan. He nods, turns his head to face the the commander. You notice a small glow in his eyes.
-”Any rumours regarding magical artifacts shouldn’t be treated lightly. Some items can store truly awe-inspiring amounts of energy. We should investigate.”

Knowing that everyone expects you to say something you quickly gather your thoughts. You appreciate commander's honesty, but the entire thing seems fishy. You remember the book Von Hohenberg found in that church. Its pages were infused with some kind of ancient magic. Additionally, he never mentioned why he and his friend are interested in this magical items. Or even how they know about their existance. On the other hand, this artifact may be the key to discovering which type of magic was contained within the book.
You know that your words may not persuade Konrad to change his mind, but he always took your words into consideration and this is the moment when you can take advantage of that. You take a deep breath and...

>”With all due respect sir, I think this is a terrible idea. If this artifact really is there, it surely wasn’t hidden without a reason.”
>”We know too little about this scepter. If we really want to search for it, we should do so with caution.”
>”Actually...I always wanted to study something like that. Researching ancient magic should be the duty of every mage.”

”We know too little about this scepter. If we really want to search for it, we should do so with caution.”
Your words are followed by a moment of silence. Many soldiers start nodding in agreement and soon
everyone ends up looking towards von Hohenberg.
-”Yes, you’re right. That’s why I need you and Adalard. You’ll check this thing for me once we find it. And
you better do it thoroughly, you hear me?” - Konrad answers with a smie.
-”Yes sir!” - both you and elf shout simultaneously.
One hour later you were already inside the forest. The morning was surprisingly cold, but you were moving
in fast pace which helped to keep you warm. For you this little exercise through a mostly silent forest was a
nice change of pace from the madness of regular battlefields. You weren’t expecting a lot of trouble,
atleast until you find the scepter, every sane Uspeshan soldier left this forest a long time ago. There was a
still a danger of encountering lesser humanoids or various forest creatures, but a group of 30 armed people
was more than enough to deal with them. The only thing reminding you that you were still fighting a war
was sporadic gunfire in the distance.
After 2 and a half hours of searching the forest you finally take a short break.
-”At this pace, we’ll be out of the forest before noon!” - comments like these dominated the group as high
spirit surged throughout the group. Only von Hohenberg appeared to be less than happy, as he looked at
his map with an irritated expression.
-”Everything’s alright?” - you asked as you approached your commander.
-”Yes, yes. It’s just this monastery. It should be somewhere around here.” - he taps a point on the map
which you can assume is your current location.
-”Maybe the intel was wrong?” - you suggested carefully . -”There are probably hundreds of legends about
hidden artifacts, someone simply took one of them too literally.”
Konrad looks at you and forces a weak smile.
-”Maybe it’s for the better...”
After pausing for a few seconds he quickly gets up and shouts
-”Okay ladies, time to get moving! We still have a lot to go!”
Suddenly you can hear a rustling somewhere a nearby. This area of the forest is covered in thick bushes
which makes any attempts to see anything quite hard. You and other soldiers spend the next couple of
seconds quietly looking for a source of these sounds. This moment of silence is finally broken by a loud
scream
-”FIRE!”

Gunfire. Chaos. People running for cover. Someone screaming. Atleast dozen of Uspeshans coming out of
nowhere. Immediately, you find yourself diving behind the nearest tree. A few meters from you Konrad von
Hohenberg shouts as loud as he can.
-”It must be a unit made out of local hunters! Enemies all around us, stay mobile, their rifles won’t be able

-”Run. Just run, nothing else. But the wounded...” - these are the words you whipser to yourself as you get
up and start sprinting forward reaching for you gun. Several bullets fly past you, but they missed – you
didn’t even have to put your shield to the test. As you keep running, you look around you watching for any
wounded. Plenty of people running, some with rifles, some with pistols, some with knives or other similar
weapons. You end up passing an Uspeshan soldier who frantically tries to reload his weapon, but you
manage to get away in time. Finally you notice a wounded friendly soldier struggling to get up from the
ground several meters from you. He’s been shot.
-”Don’t move, I’m coming!” - you shout as you approach him, ignoring the chaotic fight around you. Before
you are able to kneel next to the poor lad, you notice a short figure appearing from a bush, no more than 3
meters from you. It’s a dwarf armed with a pistol, wearing an Uspeshan uniform. Before you are able to
react in any way he fires two shots towards. You put your shield up just in time.
-”Screw this!” - the dwarf screams tossing his pistol aside and reaching for a handaxe hanging on his belt.
Your eyes widen in fear. Standard version of a magical shield spell works like a bubble that surround the
mage, it stops most projectiles, but almost useless against melee weapons. You need to act quickly.
Running away is not an option, you can’t leave the wounded friendly behind.

You quickly drop your pistol and hastily channel a small energy blast that tosses the dwarf into the ground.
Before you pick up your gun you notice that he’s not moving anymore. Slightly worried you check his pulse.
The dwarf’s still alive, just unconscious. You quickly shift your focus to the wounded friendly. As you tend to
his wounds you can’t help, but smile.
-”I’ve saved two people for a price of one, It doesn’t matter that one of them is an enemy.”
-”My, my, my! You bagged another PoW!” - you didn’t even notice when Konrad approached you. You
smiled at him, but you couldn’t help, but notice that the blade of his sabre was almost entirely red. Just
how many did he get?
Before you finish casting your healing spells, the fighting is over. Most of the attackers were killed, the
remaining few were either captured or managed to escape deeper into the forest. Some friendly soldiers
took Konrad’s advice deep into their hearts and ran after fleeing enemies for several minutes. It took a
while before the unit finally regrouped. You were treating one of the other wounded soldiers when
somebody returning from the chase shouted:
-”Captain von Hohenberg, I’ve found this monastery of yours! Bloody Whitepants used the ruins as their
camp!”
The commander’s smile said it all.
-”They definitely won’t be returning there anytime soon. Alright, finish up here. We are going sightseeing.”
After gathering the prisoners, your unit started a short march towards the monastery ruins, althought they
were barely worth this title. The walls were almost completely gone and the floor was barely visible
through an ocean of moss. Truth be told, you were expecting something a bit...more impressive. Could this
bunch of decayed rocks really hide an ancient artifact?
-”Sir, you may want to take a look.” - a familiar elven voice could be heard somewhere from the ruins.
Soon, everybody gathered around Adelard as he kneeled next to an uninviting dark stairs, leading straight
down, into darkness.
-”The basement was behind a simple illusion. Someone wanted to keep this place secret.”
Konrad shakes his head in silent acknowledgement as he stares intensively at the stairs. It looked like he
was trying to penetrate the darkness, with now, but sheer willpower.
-”Amelia.” - commander asks still looking towards the dark. -”how should we proceed?”
>”Me and Adelard, as the only magic users here, should go down first. Alone. I don’t want to potentially
endanger any of you."
>”I think you should go with us, sir. Only you are entitled to take this artifact away after we finish examining it."

Dice rolls happen during potentially dangerous situations and are used to determine the outcome.
High/low risk rolls make the chances of a successful outcome bigger/smaller + they influence the
consequences. For example, if you end up with a 3 during a normal risk roll, the outcome is going to be
average, but a 3 during a high risk roll may result in a near-death experience or worse.
If more than one person rolls for the winning option, I make an average out of every roll.
One more thing – the ratio of high-to-low risk choices will influence the ending of this quest. The more
riskier you are, the closer you’ll be to a „good” ending, but the life of your characters will be in greater peril.
I hope everything’s now clear.

The three of you start your slow descend down the stairs. Adalard casts a small light to illuminate the darkness. You start sensing magic almost immediately. The entire staircase is imbued with magical energy.
You look at the elven mage walking next to you.
-”Um...you sense this magic too, right?”
-”No.” - you can feel a slight surprise in his voice. -”That means the source is cosmic.”
-”Wait a second, what do you mean?” - Konrad asks loudly with a puzzled look on his face.

Before Adalard can open his mouth you already started producing an explanation. You’ve always enjoyed
educating people.
-”There are two types of energies – planetary and cosmic. Planetary magic is a raw force that talented people can control to influence all that’s inanimated. Thanks to it, they lift objects, form barriers or control elements. Cosmic energy is much more mysterious. It appears to be an infinite source of an extraterrestrial origin that some people can tap into. It doesn’t interact with the planet itself and can only be used on living things. Various objects can store cosmic energy, but they can never be altered by it. Every cleric and
every telepath uses this force and only they can detect it. That’s why Adalard is unable to sense magic flowing through this place, despite being a magic user himself."

-”She’s right.” - the elf looks at the light he himself casted. -”Cosmic energy saves lives, but it’s unsettling
how little we know about it despite centuries of research.”
The stairs were much longer than you’ve anticipated. It took you several minutes before you finally saw a pair of large stone doors blocking the way forward. They were decorated with many strange symbols and one weird inscription written in a common language.
“Offer us your cosmic gift.”
You walk a few steps closer towards the door. You notice two holes in shapes of large human hands. You lean even further forward. Then you are hit an overwhelming sensation of dread. You detect a massive energy source in a room. The same unknown type of magic that was stored within the pages of that book von Hohenberg found in Locronan. There is a second source, but you are unable to identify it through the massive magical signature of unknown origin. You take a few steps back as drops of cold sweat start running down your face.
-”Everything alright, Amelia?” - Konrad looks at you, clearly worried by your reaction. You slowly turn towards him and...
>Grab his arm and start begging him to reconsider recovering this artifact.
>Declare that you will open the door, but warn your companions about the source.
>Tell Konrad that you will open the door only if he promises to destroy the artifact.

-”...also, this thing needs to be studied, by our best cosmic magic experts if possible.” - you end your speech and wait for Konrad’s reaction. After a few moments of silence he smiles weakly and puts his hand on your shoulder.

-”We will be careful, Amelia. I promise. I don’t plan to risk anyone’s life over this thing.” - his words and attitude calm you down. -”You can open the door, I want to know what are we dealing with.”

You take a few uncertain steps towards the stone doors before finally placing your hands in both holes.
-”Offer your cosmic gift, huh?” - you start channeling your magical powers focusing on the object in front of you. The gate opens really slowly. Before you manage to create a crack big enough for you and your companions to fir through, you are already bleeding from your nose. You start thinking these doors weren’t meant to be opened by just a single mage. Nevertheless, you succeed in this task.

As you walk through the gap, Adalard creates another light inside the freshly opened room. It’s quite big, but also empty. The only thing inside is a small stone altar with a weird glass ball placed on top of it, a sturdy wooden doors on the other side of the room and around 30 skeletons lying in various holes in the walls. Looks like this room is a crypt.

You look at the oddly-coloured ball and quickly realize that it’s not the source of the unknown magical aura. Still, you can feel the cosmic energy stored inside it. You focus deeply trying to discover the purpose of this object. You are so, so close…

-”Oh God.”

The entrance to the room closes behind you and immediately a strings of magic start moving around the room. Suddenly, a figure wearing priest robes can be seen next to the altar. He must’ve been lying behind it, because you weren’t able to see him up to this moment. His moves are unnatural, similar to those of a puppet.

-”Undead.”

His fossilized mouth finally open.

-”The sanctuary. The gift from the travellers. You can’t take it.” - after these words, he instantly drops dead.

You see as the strings of magic who up to this point were flying without purpose all around the room rush towards the skeletons, You remember a words you’ve heard a long time ago.

-”Cosmic energy interacts not only with things are alive, but also with things that used to be alive.”

You look at your comrades. Adalard immediately starts preparing offensive spells, but von Hohenberg simply froze in place, probably unable to comprehend this situation. You can’t blame him, you are absolutely terrified aswell.

The magic ball controls skeletons like puppets, through a net of magic strings. You need to act quickly.

-”Snap out of it, please!”
You shook Konrad for a few moments before turning around to face the undead threat. Both you and Adalard understood perfectly that regular combat magic isn’t very useful against something that doesn’t care about being burned or electrocuted. Making them fall apart seemed to be the only choice. Fortunately, their slow, practically mechanical movements made them an easy target. You two got to work almost immediately. You’ve spent most of your energy opening the stone doors, but you still tried your damn hardest, sending skeletons flying left and right with some energy blasts.

At some point you paused for a second since your headache and nosebleeding were getting really severe. You glimpsed at von Hohenberg who stood motionless, staring at his sword.
-”Should’ve sticked to killing humans.” - his voice sounded empty.
You don’t have much time to think about it as you hear Adalard shouting.
-”This is not working too well. Bastards keep coming.”
The elf was slowly running out of steam. Both of you knocked out many skeletons who were unable to reform themselves, but many of them kept coming. They lacked limbs, they lacked heads, but that hardly mattered. You close your eyes thinking what to do.

Adalard simply nodded.

-”Alright, get ready Amelia.” the elven mage sighed. -”This is going to hurt as hell.”
He casts a powerful energy blast that sends several skeletons flying across the room. You fully know that after this display of force his head must be on fire and you even consider helping him for a moment, but you quickly banish this thought.

The gap in skeletons’ ranks was really wide and you had no problems running through it. Without thinking you grab the colourful ball and with a triumphant scream you toss it at the wall. It breaks instantly, without problems. In just one second, every single remaining skeleton collapsed and fell apart. It was that simple. The room is filled with noise as you and Adalard look at each other and start laughing. After a while even Konrad joins you realizing that the undead force was defeated. You made it through alive.

After resting for a few minutes, the three of you approach the wooden door. The commander, wanting to redeem himself after his small breakdown, enters first, wielding his sabre.

The room is small and semicircular. It’s decorated with old tapestry and furniture, but something else draws your attention. In one of the corners you can see a corpse, lying on the floor in a fetal position. His stiff hand clenches a simple metal scepter. It ends with an orb which illuminates the room with an otherwordly, greenish light. On the wall next to the corpse you can see a strange painting.

You quickly focus your attention on the scepter, trying to identify its magic. Adalard does the same thing, but both of you are unable to get any closer to solving this mystery. The elf summarizes his observations.
-”I don’t understand. The amount of magical energy stored within this scepter is mind-boggling, but it exists in a purely unrefined state.”

Konrad raises his eyebrow curiously looking at the glowing artifact.
-”What does it mean?”

The mage responses immediately.
-”Magic in its neutral state is completely harmless. It’s the casters’ job to control it and change its purpose. The same rule applies to magic items. If you want to create a necromantic ball, you need to imbue it with cosmic energy that you would normally use to animate the dead. And this scepter...is filled with nothing, but purposeless energy. Even this unknown type of magic has similar structure, that’s how we can determine whether or not it’s in passive or active state.”

-”So you are trying to say...”

-”It appears to be completely harmless.”

-”And the glow?”

-”A side-effect of the massive amount of energy stored inside.”

Von Hohenberg takes off his officer’s cap and scratches his head nervously. He then turn towards you.
-”So we can take it outside, right?”

>Allow Konrad to take the scepter, but mention that it requires further study.
>Tell Konrad that there is something very wrong with all of this and that the scepter should remain underground.

-”Captain von Hohenberg, please think about this. There’s something...not right with this scepter. It seems like an object of cult and the cultist were desperate enough to protect it even from beyond the grave. I believe that until we’ll be able to investigate this artifact further, only people knowledgeable in magic should interact with it.”

You’ve tried your best to convince Conrad to give the scepter to one of you. He seems to carefully consider your words, before answering.

-”I’m really, really grateful Amelia, but this potential danger is exactly the reason why I can’t give it to you. I’m an Imperial officer and I NEED to assume the full responsibility for this operation. You’ve already done enough for me today. Please! Let me carry this thing, it’s the least I can do.” - he smiles at you and kneels to grab the scepter.

You want to scream and tell him to stop, but your mouth simply won’t open. For a split-second you even consider knocking Konrad out with your magic, but you quickly banish this thought. You glance at the elf who seems to quite calm about the whole situation. You look hopelessly as the young officer grabs the scepter with his left hand and then…

Nothing happens.

-”Damn, it’s quite heavy, actually.” - Konrad turns towards the exit. -”It’s about time we leave this bloody place. Amelia, I hate to ask you for this again, but I think these stone doors need to be opened again.”

This wasn’t what you expected. Everyone is still alright and the scepter’s energy is still completely dormant. Before you exit the room after Konrad, Adalard whispers into your ear.
-”Him holding this thing may be for the better. Just keep a close look on him, alright?”
You simply nod in response.

After returning to the surface and reassuring the rest that you didn’t die down there you resume the scouting operation. For the next several hours you search the woods looking for an enemy that has retreated a long time ago. All of this time you sticked close to the commander, who seemed to be completely unaffected by the strange artifact in his backpack.

You link up with the rest of the 36th Infantry Division just before nightfall. You set up a camp and prepare for a well-deserved rest. The noice of conversations dies down as soldiers start to fall asleep one after another. Soon, it’s your turn.

Your sleep is disturbed as your mind is constantly invaded by images of that creepy painting, still illuminated in a sickly green glow. Soon, you wake up. Just in time to hear footsteps outside of your tent. You quietly look outside and immediately notice two characters, walking away towards the camp’s center. They both wear officer’s uniforms. You can only assume one of them is Konrad.

The pair appears to be talking, but you are too far away to pick anything up. You decide to risk it and get a little closer towards them. You identify a female voice.

-”...biggest battle of the war. We are talking 8 divisions, atleast 120.000 men.”

A second voice, belonging to Konrad von Hohenberg responds:
-”This is going to be a mess. I’ve already got my taste of urban combat in Locronan, Magnier is going to be 10 times worse.”

-”Perhaps not.”

They both stop near the big tents used for strategic meetings.

-”Let’s meet in my tent afterwards, alright?” - the woman speaks in a quiet tone, you are barely able to hear her despite being relatively close. -”We’ll discuss your findings there.”

As the two officers enter the HQ, you look at them with concern. How much did Konrad tell that woman? What are they planning to discuss? You sigh.

You sit down in some dark corner and decide to wait until Konrad exits the meeting. Only a few moments later you start yawning.
-”Damn, I barely got any sleep, thanks to these nightmares. I’ve used too much magic...in that dungeon. It surely exhausted...my body.” - You fell asleep before you notice anything.

The loud noises of people talking wake you up. When you spring back to life with panicked eyes, the moon is still high on the sky. You see atleast a dozen Imperial officers either walking away from the tent or having conversations with each other.
-”Nononono!” - you scream inside your head. -”Where is Konrad? Where?”
Despite your efforts, locating him was an impossible task. You spend the next 15 minutes walking around the HQ tent, but to no avail. You can barely contain yourself from yelling in anger.

Some time later...

Konrad von Hohenberg looked at the beatiful night sky, dotted in stars. His mind was filled with doubts. He lit up a cigarette, for the first time in months.

-”There must be more to this thing! I know...someone who can help us.”

He just left Erika von Glattekrone’s tent. She was genuinely shocked when she heard about von Hohenberg’s little adventure in monastery’s dungeon. Still, she seemed determined to stick to her plan.
-”I didn’t even ask who she was referring to.”

-”Think about this, Konrad. Magnier...is going to be a grind.” - these were her exact words. It’s like she knew what to say to pull the young captain’s strings.

-”You didn’t have to tell me that.” - he released a huge cloud of smoke. -”I’ve lost almost half of my men capturing a fucking village. How many will I lose capturing a city? 80 percent? 90?”

-”If we figure out how to use it, we can save lives!”

-”Any advantage in the upcoming battle could result in hundreds...no, thousands less casualties for the Empire.”

-”You don’t want another Locronan, right, Konrad?”

He exhaled.
-”She got me there.”
But he knew that this wasn’t the real reason behind his decision. The words that made him give Erika von Glattekrone the scepter were...

-”And...this will open many doors for us. You don’t want to spend the rest of your days crawling in mud, right? You deserve so, so much more than this.”

He remembered how she smiled after saying these words. She knew perfectly that she had him. He knew it too. And yet, he still fell for it.

He threw the cigarette butt and watched the last embers fading away.

After realizing that you lost Konrad for good, you’ve decided to come back to your tent. Just as you are about to enter it, you hear a familiar voice.
-”Still awake?’
You turn around to face von Hohenberg. You quickly notice the troubled look on his face. You open your mouth and…

>”Where is the scepter? What did you do with it?”

-”I...” - he pauses for a moment. -”I am worried, Amelia. Worried about the upcoming battle.”

You raise your eyebrows in surprise.
-”You are the last person I would be expecting to worry about that, captain.”

-”I’m not anxious about my well-being or the result. We will take this city one way or another.” - he takes a few steps towards you. -”Just keep everyone safe out there, alright? But most importantly...” - you feel Konrad’s hand touching your shoulder. -”...keep yourself safe. No recklessness. That should be reserved only for me.”

Von Hohenberg smiles at your stunned face before taking his hand away.
-”Make sure you use these last few days of relative peace and prepare yourself well. Magnier is going to be our toughest battle yet.” - he then turns around and start walking away.

You let him take several steps before finally speaking.
-”Captain von Hohenberg?”

He turns around looking at you curiously.
-”Yes?”

-”Thank you.”

Konrad smiles at your words, but you quickly notice that his eyes are sad. He resumes the walk towards his tent.
-”You really shouldn’t. You really shouldn’t.”

His answer left you puzzled, but atleast now you have no doubts about Konrad’s intensions. He’s just another lost soul, who stumbled upon something larger than him. You can’t help, but be a little angry at yourself.
-”Why was I doubting him this entire time? He wants nothing more than to see his men make it through another day.” - you glance at the beatiful sky above you.

-”Right?”

You’ve returned to your rent and quickly fell asleep again. This time, there were no nightmares disturbing you.

You spend the next few days helping surgeons and other clerics at various field hospitals. Constant skirmishes with the retreating Uspeshans ensured a constant flow of wounded soldiers. It was a taste of life you initially wanted.
You focused on controlling the amount of magic you use during treatment. Many clerics tend to use too much energy than necessary when treating wounds. This waste of magical power leads to more fatigue which is something you want to avoid at all cost. You are fully aware that you’ll probably be doing a lot of healing in Magnier and you don’t intend to pass out from the overusage of magic. Never again.

These exercises were exhausting, but in the end, you were satisfied with the results. And, of course, you were happy that you helped even more people recover from their wounds.

The faithful day was looming closer and closer...

The sound of a massive artillery barrage disturbs your sleep. Hundreds of heavy guns pound the city without mercy and will do so until dawn, when the assault is scheduled to begin. You can see the silhouette of Magnier in the distance. The city is burning. You remember Konrad’s briefing.

-”The 49th Infantry Batallion, including our company was ordered to capture the city’s library. It may not seem like a prestigious task, but make no mistake, it’s one of the largest buldings around.”

The library was a mighty building indeed, located neart he city’s center. It will be hours before you even arrive there. Hours of brutal, urban combat. You sigh. Just like the last time, Konrad granted you an opportunity to choose your position on the battlefield. You obviously appreciate it, but at the same time, it’s a big responsibility. You think intensively, still looking at the burning city in the distance. Finally you decide to…

>Stick to Konrad and stay at the front, they’ll need your help the most.

At dawn you and the rest of von Hohenberg’s company reach your starting position. You can see Konrad talking to the rest of batallion’s field commanders. You quickly notice that the woman who was with Konrad a few nights ago is also there. After sharing some last insights they all march towards their respective units.

-”Alright!” - the captain shouts. -”Before we begin I want to point out that our division’s commander, general von Glattekrone, expects us to fulfill our objectives first. But for me, that is not enough. We will be the first among the first. Let’s plant the Empire’s flag on the library’s roof before the rest of our batallion finishes its afternoon nap!”

The soldiers shout and cheer as von Hohenberg turns towards the smouldering ruins of the city lying before him and looks at his watch.
-”It’s time.”
He blows his whistle and with his sabre drawn starts sprinting towards the nearest buildings. Imperial artillery comes to life once again providing your advance with some covering fire.

A few minutes later you are already inside Magnier, passing dozens of damaged buildings. You are yet to find any enemies to fight. Something is definitely not right.
-”They are luring us in.” - an old soldier walking next to you decided to express his concerns vocally.

The company stops from time to time to check nearby buildings, without any results.

Suddenly you hear a brief wheeze as the front of the column is hit by several explosions. Soon after, several machine guns and rifles opens fire towards your direction. Somebody pops a smoke grenade as soldiers run towards buildings or debris lying around. Someone screams.
-”Mortar fire! Hide inside the buildings!”
Through the smoke you are unable to see anything that’s happening at the front, but you still hear the rabid sounds of machine guns and mortars. Konrad von Hohenberg is nowhere to be found.
-”Is he okay? Damn, I can’t see a thing.”

>Run through the smoke and check the front, searching for Konrad or any wounded.

Disregarding the potential danger, you rush through the smoke to find anyone who needs help. Your shield has no trouble withstanding the few stray bullets that hit you on your way to the front.

You’ve found yourself right in the middle of a massive mess. You quickly notice atleast a dozen people lying on the street, with Uspeshan bullets flying all around them. To your surprise, a few of these soldiers are still moving. You try to approach them, but almost immediately you are hit by a mortar shell. Your shield holds, but your head almost explodes with pain. You take a few steps back, completely stunned. For a few moments you simply stand there, before someone pulls you into a relative safety of a ruined building.

-”Do you always need to pull something like this off? Bloody idiot.” - Adalard’s voice makes you able to recover from your shock. After saying these words, he turns around and hurls a fireball at one of the machine gun nests. It goes up in flames, undoubtedly alongside its crew.

You look at the elven mage. Seeing parts of his face covered in blood make you realize that a thick stream of blood is coming out of your nose, but right now it’s not important to you.

-”Please, I need to go out there. They need my help.”

Adalard looks at you with resignation.
-”You really want to get yourself killed, eh? Well, the machine guns are gone and the mortars stopped firing. It may actually be your chance.”

You quickly get up, but you can’t leave without asking one crucial question.
-”Where is the captain?”

-”He gathered some guys and went through the ruins to deal with enemy gunners.”

You feel some relief. Atleast he’s still alive. Probably.
-”Alright, focus. First, the wounded. Then you can go look for Konrad.” - you think to yourself as you are preparing to leave the building. Suddenly, a brand new sound can be heard. A loud mechanical humming. An engine?

-”Oh God, what now?”

Cont in the next post.

You, Adalard and the of the soldiers look in shock as giant, box-like machine slowly crawls its way from between the buildings. It enters the street, accompanied by a large group of Uspeshan riflemen. You scream in frustration. There’s no way you’ll be able to help the wounded with this thing roaming around. Suddenly you hear Adalard’s voice.

-”Go help these people, Other soldiers will surely pin down their infantry and the tank, well...leave it to me.”

-”Are you insane? A mere fireball or two won’t take it down.” - you say looking at Adalard with pure bewilderment.

-”I’m not planning to use any offensive spells. Planetary magic can be used to control objects, remember? I’ll flip it over.”

There’s no way you heard that right.

-”You’re nuts! It will consume too much magical energy. The over-usage will kill you!”

-”Probably. But it may save the rest of you.”

The elven mage takes a deep breath, before heading towards the exit.
