The solid concrete of each building's roof resounds with a hard thunk, boots dropping heavily at a rapid pace as you try to escape from your pursuer.

???: "Nowhere to go, huh?"

Stopping at another edge, elevated at a lethal height, you first overlook the bustling night roads of this metropolis. Then, to him.

???: "For an old man, you're quite the runner."

"Age does little to a man that's brimming with life! You should know that, Cateye!"

???: "Hmm..."

The adversary closes in silently, ceasing to speak a word. You, however, stay still, your back facing a long drop.

Determined to end this confrontation, he quits the slow approach and closes the distance. All he has now, currently, is the blade of his gun; prior to this moment, you have emptied all supplies of his ammo.

You're not a pacifist, unfortunately for him. But you're a philosopher! And this scene calls for your art.

"I see that we're both eager to move our separate ways. I have a granddaughter to attend~"

To match his speed, you take off towards him, brandishing a...

Your cane clashes with the opposer, a forceful explosion pushing both of you apart to where you started.

In accordance with this awe-inspiring scene, the vigilante grasps at his mask in reaction.

Despite being obscured under that coat, you immediately understand his confusion. After all, no one expects for a new villain to be such a dapper man. Your assumptions make you believe that he's quite a young lad; maybe around twenty, you'd say?

Cateye: "That stick?!"

"This? Why it's the product of my research. I visited tons of places in the past: notably Italy, Romania, and a couple of old French sites as, what I like to call, a 'rogue professor.' You wouldn't believe what I found within their archaic ruins...But telling you would be a poor choice."

Millions of foreign characters— old English, French, Latin, and others that are derived from Europe and the Middle East, to name a few— are engraved into the metal of your cane. You've spent years memorizing these particular "spells" that'd you like to refer to them as.

The second bout doesn't commence. Instead, you proceed to fake out your enemy to create a cloaking mist.

By the time that the haze subsided, you are nowhere to be seen.

Cateye: "Hmph. He shows his face but not his name? What did he even want out of that jewelry store, especially with that tool?"

Alone, the vigilante contemplates your reasoning for your crime: breaking into a high-class shoppe for a single ring.

Deep into the rich city, where heroes made a name for themselves in the year 3023, you listen to your doorstep's bell. This plot of land where your manor lives have been passed down from generation to generation, your family somehow sustaining quite a lavish life.

Relieved, you drop your cane by the wall as if it's just like any other item, fixing yourself a pot of tea to relax within the kitchen. Upon sitting in a chair by the fireplace, you're reminded that the ring that you stole is still in your pocket, poking into you.

Putting the jewelry on a stand, you take a sip from your cup.

"How many years was that clocktower demolished?... Can only hear the fire crackling."

???: "Grandpa!"

Almost choking on your tea, you swivel to a staircase that grants entry to a second floor. There, your granddaughter.

"Ana? I thought that you'd arrive for another hour at the airport?"

Ana: "Surprised? The flight was actually faster than I expected!"

"Where's your mother? Didn't Beatrice or your father accompany you? In a taxi, at the very least?"

Ana: "C'mon, Grandpa, I'm a big girl! I just turned 16 this June!"

"So that means no one came along? You were all alone?"

Your granddaughter nods to confirm your suspicion.

"Christ!!! I Got to have a talk with your parents, then! Especially your father! I told Beatrice that those seaniggers were irresponsible!"

By the home's ancient telephone, Ana stops you.

Ana: "Grandpa, calm down. You know that Dad's a good man."

"But—"

Ana: "If you do, I won't listen to your stories."

Like a scolded dog, you recoil your arm and place yourself back onto your chair.

For a brief moment of silence, you rethink your attitude. Though, you're going to be the same as always.

"... How are your parents?"

Ana: "They're happy. Mom wasn't as enthusiastic in sending me for the summer in comparison to Dad. Eventually, she relented; the companies that they work for has a lot of lined up."

"I don't understand Beatrice. Is she ashamed of me?"

Ana: "Don't fret~ You got your beautiful granddaughter, right?"

You glance at her with a crocodile's saddened expression, smiling right after.

"I guess so, Dear. Say, why don't I tell you about my time as a soldier during 2982?"

Ana: "Again?..."

"Sit, sit~ You gotta know all these things before I'm as dead as Grandma. And trust me, it won't be an easy afterlife!"

Midway through your narration of falling artillery shells, plasma cannons, and good 'ol gunfire, Ana interrupts you to show her report card.

Impressed and, most importantly, proud, you congratulate her on getting an exceeding record. You swear that she has gotten bigger from when you last saw her postcard. Kids grow up too quickly, nowadays.

Ana: "Grandpa, got anything else than just your war stories?"

"Something else? Let's see... How about a great thief's duel against a black cat?"

Integrating most of your recent experiences as a high-time criminal, you entertain Ana about a gentleman thief that fought off a witch's unlucky pet. It seems that she appreciates these kinds of stories more, slowly falling asleep by the fire.

Killing the weak flames of the fireplace, you carry your granddaughter to the mansion's guest room. Additionally, her luggage, which is heavy as a tank. Listlessly, you watch her under in the moonlit room, laying the ring that you stole by her face.

Under the whole mansion is your lair, hidden by the classical bookshelf passage.

"Sweet girl. Not to mention how she snuck into the house without a key. Haha~ She's becoming more like me by the day!"

Flipping the lights to your secret facility, you get to work on your next operation.

"An old man like me needs to go out in a blaze of glory for her. There's no better way to do it then to be the greatest villain."

Fortunately, your self-given title of "rogue professor" yielded a myriad of knowledge and artifacts.

"Tomorrow's plan. What to do, what to do..."

"A show for the Hero's League would work, they'd love it! Not to mention their recruits that go by the 10s every couple seasons or so. It'll make a lasting impression as I officially debut from the shadows. But how should I present myself?"

You had already let Cateye see your face, so it wouldn't be wise to show it off anymore. Even if he's part of the underground world, that vigilante poses a great threat if he puts two and two together.

Nonetheless, upholding a villainous characterization shouldn't be too much of a hassle. If you can keep any signs of your lawless prowls from Ana, without garnering her suspicion, then there isn't a complication at all.

Searching around the facility and, to some extent, the house, you dust off a sufficient enough disguise to don: A top hat, coupled together with a fine waistcoat, boots, and mask.

"Am I to be like that feline?~"

Humming to yourself with wondering comments, you adjust the article that hides your face. This visor has finally become of use to you, its features starkly white and bare; all except for two slits to serve the eyes. That is not to say your other pieces aren't as amazing. Why, your boots are a unique variant of the riding kind, wholly made of calfskin.

Now, confident that your identity won't be as easy to figure out, you busy yourself with the performance itself...

Digging through the accumulation of magical tools, some stolen and some made by yours truly, you start to schedule your broadcast with the help of the supernatural arts. Magicks are an entirely different thing than technology, allowing certain actions to be made possible.

"How did I work this thing again?"

Fiddling about with a mirror and a half-broken tablet of clay, you scry for any opportunities that'll serve you well. Finally, the artifacts start to work, providing you more than enough information to work with.

"A crime syndicate's hitting a bank, I see. Gladly!"

Greatly endowed with forgotten knowledge, you continue to fabricate tomorrow night's events.

The corridors of the mansion are dimly lit by the cool morning rays, a hint of light-green floating in the glassy halls. Traversing such passages, you make the way upstairs to meet Ana's room, knocking on the door beforehand. With no faint utterance on the other side, you enter.

She isn't in her bed. Curious, you begin to search the room.

Ana: "Gao~!"

From out of the closet, your granddaughter ambushes you unnoticed. She made you skip a beat, but luckily, you retained your jolly demeanor, unbroken.

"Since when were you the monster that hid in the closet?"

Delighted by the attempt, you move your hand on top of Ana's head to pet her. You suppose that you're too tall by a second's examination, or maybe she's too short for a high schooler. Though, Beatrice never really achieved anywhere near your height as well, only barely.

"A chip off the old block, eh? You're getting too good into sneaking into places, especially when you were smaller. In fact, I'd love to see yourself hone it."

Ana: "R-Really? Hehe~ My parents don't like it when I do such a thing. It also creeps a few of my neighbors."

"Well, listen to your old man's word because it's chock-full of more wisdom than your mother or father. Grow it! Your granddad here wouldn't be as lively if he didn't train himself! Hell, my body's health is abnormal!"

Encouraging this skill of hers whilst jabbing a few remarks at her father, you manage to influence Ana's determination to cultivate it further.

Calmed, your eye catches your granddaughter's finger; she's wearing the ring that you left her.

"Like it? I got it just for your arrival~"

Ana: "Oh, this? Yes! I love it!"

"Good, good! Say, why don't I treat you to breakfast? I know a restaurant that's leagues above rice and fish!"

Ana: "Aye!~ By the way, what's with the suitcase?"

Up to this point, you have been bringing along said baggage.

"It's nothing to be of concern. Just some things that I need to bring along."

With that settled, you lead Ana to your car. The destination provoked a childish manner, accompanying the high school girl to the finest dining.

For a considerable time, she looked at the menu, inquiring about each dish that obtained her interest.

"How do you feel about the heroes? I'm sure that they must be the talk of the town, or at your school."

Ana: "They're pretty cool. Western sorts are a common topic, but local ones do have a great presence. That reminds me, have you ever heard of Steel?"

"No. Please, tell."

Ana: "He's one of the strongest in Japan. I'm sure that you've at least glance at a magazine of him."

Your conscious search for any recollection, although sequentially proven futile.

"Sadly, I do not know of him."

Ana: "Is that so? He's like a knight, but more modern, er, futuristic-y."

"Must be wearing an advanced battle suit. He sounds like a memorable fellow. Tough, why bring it up?"

Ana: "Just wanted to see if he strikes your fancy."

"Don't worry about it, Dear. If he's one of the top in the region, then he's competent. That's a minimal presumption, however."

Ana: "I guess that's expected from you."

Your granddaughter couldn't make up her mind, ordering only a piece of cake in the end. She worried that you might be hungry, as you didn't get anything for yourself. But you assured her that it's okay, happy as a clam.

Following after that short moment, you both head out into the city, touring Ana of the city's attractions: historical values, museums, and most particularly, Britain's HL headquarters. Before this, you made an abrupt stop at a certain bank.

The case that you're carrying contained your magical supplies. Chalk, a chisel, Latin hymns, and a personal journal of fitting chants to name a few. Swiftly, you proceeded to mark your selected positions with a spell; upon activation— which is appointed later this night— they'll act as a visual feed that'll be broadcasted to HL's headquarters. If things go the way that they should be, you'll be free to do crime while the heroes are busy with the Dalia Syndicate.

With most of your preparations fulfilled, you loosen up, retiring a calculative mind that you've been using for the past hour.

Wholly absorbed with the present, you attend Ana's side in a welcoming stroll. You're not too far from HL's headquarters, its figure peeking over the rest of the corporate towers. Throughout the leisure walk, you remind the high schooler of her past occurrences; she'd either laugh or wave away at you to cease your thoughts, trying to forget more embarrassing memories.

Howbeit, social interference is just around the corner. A crowd of people swarms their target, making it hard to discern the personage that has incurred this mass.

Ana offers to ride upon your shoulders to get a better look. You comply instantaneously, pulling her up to support her view.

"Who is it?"

Ana: "Some pretty boy."

"Pretty boy?..."

Your musings make themselves clear without a second need for inspection. There's only one person you can reliably discern with just a weak description.

"He's Adam Loriesol, otherwise known as Eden."

Placing your granddaughter back on the ground, she questions more on the person.

"Got huge when he subdued two monsters that were in a clash. Controls plants, very strong ones too."

Ana: "You don't like him either, don't you?"

"Not exactly, Dear."

Prior to Ana's arrival, a couple of months in fact where you kept your head low, you somehow crossed Eden in an unlucky turn. At that time, you were just breaking into museums to amass a collection of fine art.

If it weren't for your cane's magical qualities, burning away at millions of roots, you would've got caught. You still don't know if he witnessed your face as that toil distracted any semblance of a personal alarm.

Unlike this celebrity, Cateye stays out of the spotlight, so you're more relaxed on that vigilante's efforts than him. That is if he becomes a pest in the future.

The day flew by without sparing a moment in its elapse, gradually painting the world with a vibrant shade. Soon, it transitions into the night's palette of blues and blacks, decorating the manor's garden in its temporary hue.

You have returned to your mansion, occupying its lower living spaces whilst readying yourself for tonight's events.

Ana's in the kitchen, helping herself to its contents; minutes later, she comes back to sit by you, lazing around on the carpet. She does little to entertain herself, abstaining from the room's television and preferring to have a book in hand. However, she just skims through its pages before browsing for another one.

The tranquil air induces a sleepy atmosphere, one that you have learned to tolerate during the long nights. Your granddaughter, whose growth has yet to finalize as an adult, is exponentially susceptible to it, nodding away on the ground.

"Why don't you rest? You're just about to fall asleep."

The girl's head rocks forth with a kind of certainty, prompting you to tuck her into bed as if she was a child.

The image of her under the sheets engrosses you; Ana's sleeping posture resembles Beatrice's very well, a mother's habits passed onto the daughter. In spite of wanting to fix her position, you let the girl be, giving her the night in that tender swaddle of hers.

The mansion's secret facility welcomes you with the echo of your steps. Everything is where they were left after last night, the enigmatic costume that you've gathered from your family's treasures set up on a corner's stand.

Your heart is revived with excitement, all while you finish the final touches of your suit and mask. Since you already have a wispy form, you look to be some sort of abstract character from a children's book, innocently menacing.

With Ana absent from the lower floors, the whole house is reset in a frozen appearance. Many items of old assume a stagnant stance, furthering the museum-like effect that's way too conspicuous for those who visit.

Your leave was quiet. The neon sea that is the city is waiting for you up ahead, drawing you in with an abundance of schemes on your back.

Attached signs that glow in varying colors set the stage; three of whom who you passed are flickering due to neglected maintenance, the others well-lit. Under them are the late night crowd, their shadows dipping into the blaring streets. The casted shades flip onto itself from each vehicle's lights, meshing together as intangible clay.

One would expect for you to be caught in an environment like this, but in reality, it's easier. Men have their minds taken over by the night's fever, having no time to glance into the alleys or roofs where you prowl. Even more so if they're drunk, granting you a criminal's liberty at a higher degree.

A good thirty minutes of a rush yields your destination's appearance up ahead.

You push yourself against an alley's wall, stalking the art museum that's just a block away. Periodically, a flashlight's shine pierces the building's glass, Acquainting you with the guard's path of patrol.

Ears are perked, attentively sorting out the sounds in the air. At any rate, the first signal of conflict will arise from afar, where the Dalia syndicate is.

The feedback spells that you had set up should activate at the scene's happening, alarming the HL to react.

A profound crash is then heard. On queue, you abandon all thoughts on the bank robbery to focus on your own.

To make a ruckus will defeat the purpose of this sneaky act. Traveling to the museum's back, through the wet, unchecked areas that divide every building in this urban coordination, you seek a passageway.

A singular door leads inside, right before the concrete walls that isolate it. In turn, upon breaking its lock, you enter a janitor's closet before the main halls of the museum.

Chiseled statues stood eerily still, looking up at the moonlight above in uniformity. Or appears to be like it.

Ancient findings are locked into glass displays and paintings hang off the walls to show its creator's mastery.

All of this for the taking.

The guards' ignorance is outstanding. Even if you were to drop a sheet of glass on the floor by mistake, they wouldn't take notice as their heads are as dense as a diamond.

Enabled to wander the museum without an inch of worry, you begin to loot everything that's desirable. Three paintings and a chiseled gem should do it. And a couple more is a plus!

Blessed with this coincidence, you keep yourself from taking too much as it'll expend all of your luck. Momentarily driven by that rule, you stealthily exit the museum with treasures in tow.

That doesn't mean you didn't steal a fortune.

Halfway through the same journey, you spot a skirmish between a heroine and the Dalia syndicate's mobs. They posed a great defense against their foe, all until they're apprehended by the lass a minute later.

Said heroine concealed a unique piece of tech, juxtaposed by her highwayman's coat. With it, she'd blow back the biggest opponent in just one punch, assisted by the gauntlets that encapsulate both hands.

???: "Got anything else that you can throw at me? I'm sure that one of you's better than that guy just a second ago!"

She looks to be having fun, balancing the fleeting emotion with continued enforcement. The pair of shades that are lifted over her ashen-colored hair reminds you of an unruly kid. No more, no less.

Mob A: "Retreat! We can deal with the bosses later!"

The view amused you. However, knowing that you might be caught by an eye's passing glance, you heed the grunt's words and head out of sight.

You got to redecorated your home soon!

A cup of coffee brings life into your groggy state after a night's rest

You haven't come to know of the syndicate's fate, nor is it your priority.

Absolutely satisfied with what you accomplished, you drink your cup's remains in front of a newly installed painting.

Ana: "It's quiet this morning, huh?"

"Yes, indeed..."

Her reveal was unexpected. Though, after you encouraged this skill of hers yesterday, it seems that you may need to get used to it.

"Did you just wake? Your hair is all messy."

Ana: "Y-Yeah."

A yawn wrenches itself forth from the girl, a face full of sandman's dream dust unmade. A strand of her blonde locks falls over her nose, partially obscuring her head's upper half. More than often will she massage her own face, sluggishly stirring herself from the last of slumber's domain.

"I thought about yesterday for a bit. It seems that you share the same disinterest in heroes, just like me."

For as long as you can remember, Ana never held a fascination with these superpowered crime fighters. While other children played pretend of their favorite role models, she would pick at the grass or collect bugs from a nearby brush. In retrospect, your granddaughter was a tomboy. One who never fussed with her skirt at that; a tomboy in disguise, you should say? However, silly.

The high schooler takes a moment's worth of consideration before answering. "They just seem boring to me. Sure, they're good 'n all, but it gets stale with how much the press reports on them. If I had to pick a side, it'd be the villains'; too bad that it's kind of a taboo, especially back at home."

You snicker, which then develops into a laugh. "Please, excuse my rudeness, Dear." Recomposed, you went on. "You were always the child who would pick the opposing team. Don't you remember those times where you played at that sandpit? Hmm... If only I knew the exact location."

"Hehehe... That's true. Mostly out of spite, if I had to be honest. Just didn't like those other kid's smug faces."

"Well, ain't that hypocritical? You're showing one off right now," you jokingly pointed out. Ana suppresses her catty smile, fixing her hair for a second as she needed an abrupt distraction from your reply. "Dear, humor your old man and give me an answer: what would you do if you were to be some sort of 'sorceress?' "

"Like magic and stuff? It would be awesome if I could replicate those shows at home. Maybe I could act out without shame if I had the ability, since, you know, high schoolers don't shout out 'flame chrysalis' or 'subterranean grasp: palm of Mother Earth's wrath!' for example."

"That's an awfully specific example, isn't it?"

"Haha, y-yes. I may have gotten too into my shows."

Your chin bobs in recognition, taking note of your granddaughter's thoughts and beliefs. She has said it all, but for reasons unexplored, you'll wait for the perfect time to show your villainous prospects to her.

The pungent scent of pond water saturates the park's air. It overpowers the taste of morning's breakfast, however, mysteriously alluring for passersby that come to enjoy the area. From the edges of the sidewalk to the far center of the huge lake are ducks and geese; aquatic birds make this place their home, in addition to invaders and critters unseen.

Ana takes the front of the walk, skipping in intervals until changing how her feet move— and then right back at skipping again. You lent her one of the mansion's dresses. In reality, she had worn it before but doesn't remember. You'd reckon that it was eight years ago, not that it matters; the outfit still adorns her perfectly.

Its floaty petticoat peeps from under her dress, both articles waving around as Ana sways playfully. So does her sleeves that balloon at the arms, fitted through a vest that complimented the rest of her borrowed gown. If she were to stand by a Victorian era painting, side by side, she would've seemed like its character that has come to life.

The deeper into the park you go, the older the generation. At least, that's what you concluded after wandering these parts for yourself, even before now. To you, they're examples; both young and old, senior citizens alike dally at the benches, protected from the Sun's rays by an overhead board. Comically, a lady will come and sit at one of these stations, carrying with her a bag of oatmeal or breadcrumbs for the park's voracious avians.

You despise the sight as it's something that you never hope to be, but at the same time, you appreciate its serene picture. It serves as a would-have-would-be if you weren't so gifted with an impeccable body. You're thankful that you don't suffer age's maladies; for all you care, you will leave these other seniors in the dust.

A person nearby signs a warning; everybody that's in his general surroundings gyrates their heads to the source of this abrupt trouble. A monster emerges from the park's secluded dwellings, its mossy arms pushing apart the trees so it can approach the closest congregation of humans. As terrifying as it is, the pace by which it moves is sluggish, corresponding to its stone appearance. "A rock monster?" you discerned, as it's not exactly a golem, per se.

Pulling back your astonished grandchild, you both take cover behind a small bathroom facility at your left to avoid the monster's anger. Thus far, you haven't, as its soulless eyes scan the masses that lacked you and Ana's individuals.

It groans, lifting up its arms that are nothing more than a connection of featureless rock; how the creature is, beneath all that debris, evokes an insect's likeness. Upon getting a better view of its body, you can line out its carapace's plates, mirroring a flawed set of armor.

This observation of yours sidetracks your thought, forgetting about the monster's initial attack. In a heavy pound, the space that progresses forwards ruptures; where its boulder-like arms collided produced a deep indention on the ground. In a matter of seconds, an extreme force ripped everything it touched within its range. Those who are injured due to its feat is unknown to you.

"Think, think think..." Relying upon the mind's library, you make out an arrangement of intensive formulas to rouse the supernatural processes of the world. You're not one to use the "self-channeling method" of magic; its written form is where you excel in, but you have no choice in this situation. Ana looks at you with a dumbstruck countenance, beholding the events that unfold.

Your attempt results in a bland figure, downcasted shadows shaped into a humanoid to distract the stone giant. Sent forth, you grab Ana and take for the opposite direction, glimpsing behind to see your created figure smashed.

The being's remnants scatter to its original owners: overbearing trees and other sources of shade. One and done, the monster then swivels its tucked head to gaze at you. Its arms lift, replicating the destructive phenomenon a moment before to throw back its own ability.

"A picky one, are you? Deciding to go after me while a whole group of people is running like mice in a cornfield? Good heavens!" A fire ignites from within your soul, demanding to be taken into form through your hands. Abiding by its influence, you extend an arm and wave, summoning a powerful expanse that's supplemented by orange flames. The two forces clash, buckling under their conflicted energy; the point where they met left another crater, a testament to you and the monster's mastery over manipulated physics.

"Graaaa...." Behind its moans is a faint buzz. Seeing that its strength is challenged, it lumbers closer to you with a destructive momentum. You reissue the magical combustion, chips flying off its craggy mantle. However, it is unconcerned of pain's promise, putting itself in a stalemate as it punches at a series of fierce conflagrations.

The sheltered Ana watches with sparkling eyes. She has shed off her fear to perceive this fantastical fight. "G-Grandpa can do that?!" consciously uttered, relating thoughts popping up in her brain while crouching behind your coated figure.

Stray embers escape the midair border between the walking conglomerate of stones and your explosions; wherever they land, a patch of grass or just the cement from under you, a minor scorch singes the site of its arrival. You'll have to mind how much you're putting into this battle, as drying up from energy loss won't be a good way to go out. However, whilst understanding that fact, you continue to exert yourself to impress upon the wondrous Ana.

"You are faster than you look. It seems that I have to take it up a notch if you're this hasty to approach. Have at thee!" With a snap of your finger, a ring of candlelight encircles the monstrous bug. Quickly, their waving dance spikes into a mad rave, extending the height of its flickering burn— three feet higher, beyond its gargantuan size.

Its shell protects itself from the risen heat, anyhow, that's not what you aimed for in the first place. The stone carapace shows the frame of each plate, and upon seeing thus, you wedge a large protusion of sharp earth into its edges.

Exhaustion saved, you remove yourself by just ten steps, looking to the monster's struggle in a casual manner. Your only worry now is that people might've recorded this fight, but you'll come to know that they've been evacuated in response to this short-lived event.

Soon, one of civilization's many defenders strolls in. Stork, whose lower half of his face is obscured by a long collar; further shadowed by a narrowly brimmed hat. Notwithstanding the potential danger, he join your inquisitive gaze on the hulking being. Albeit, his crossbow drawn.

The hero's curiosity of how you factored into this case is unaroused. Given the opportunity, you gather Ana to leave the park immediately. She, herself, had millions of questions upon witnessing your displayed techniques; to which you try to keep up with her puzzled barkings. Somehow, after that taxing bout, you're able to hold a cheerful grin. Or maybe a sly one, depending on another's perspective of things.

At your manor, you hold off on your granddaughter's interrogations for her to change into a cleaner set of clothes. She does, coming to where you presided within a simple sundress.

At the backyard's porch, the collection of flowers take your head to place's uselessly imaginable until Ana rolls along. Her anticipation let free and mouth resumed, you lean onto the stage's wooden railings, caught up in your own expectancies for the high schooler.

She tries to conceal her excitement with a different tone, but it's futile, slowly regressing into the same delirious stage from the beginning car ride. "How come you never told me any of this? When were you able to do any of that?!" she berated in nonsensical questionings. Seeing that there's no reason to deprive her of information, you speak accordingly. It leads to the second round of inquisition: "D-Does it run in the family? Can I do it?!~"

"So eager, eh~? We two only know about such powers; the rest of our family is ignorant. I must say that I'm the first member to gain knowledge of its practice as well." Moving over to the porch's overhang, you pick a flower from a suspended pot. The petals are burned as a demonstration, its color becoming charred and shrinking inwards without the need for a lighter. It is discarded right after, Ana's eyes following it all the way down where it lands on a bed of soil. "I can teach you. But you must promise me that you will take this in all seriousness. "Magic" can easily backfire on a person who's not prepared for its consequences, and I'd hate for you to get hurt because of it."

"Magic...?" Contrasted by the previous minutes, where she deeply inquired about the subject, Ana ponders over the possibility. Then, she subtly shakes her head to affirm her position on the offer, putting on a modest outlook to appear suitable. "Yes, Grandpa!"

"I must mention that it relies on one's own merit. With adequate teachings from me, you can branch off to do your own thing when you have permission. You could surpass me, even~ I will not start any lessons now, however. It's lunch, and I have to prepare something for us, right?"

Departing from the porch, you serve up Ana's midday meal. The atmosphere's respite forwards the conversation to a mundane talk, sparing yourselves the moment to act as a two-part family. The charm of it all is carried by the daughter, thoroughly trained in polite bearings by her mother.

"I'd prefer to talk to my daughter..." you solely requested.

"Ah, um, I'll get her, Mister Williams."

"Please, hurry with it."

Kenta's phone produces a handful of static noise as he passes it onto your daughter. "don't be such a pushover," she says faintly to him in the background. "geez. that damned old man. Hey! Cant'cha talk to him like a normal person for once?!" she hissed with volume restored. Beatrice takes up a disapproving stance on your unwillingness towards Kenta.

> "You know how it is. Anyways, why the sudden call, Sweetie?"
> "Watch your language, young girl. I can hitch a ride in a matter of hours to correct you for that."
> "Yeah, yeah; calm down, Sweetie. Is there anything that you need over there?"

"You know how it is. Anyways, why the sudden call, Sweetie?"

Beatrice sighs heavily, exasperated by how quick you adjust yourself. "We just wanted to see how you were doing. To be honest, Ana's summer break will feel like spring break instead with how busy me and Kenta are."

"Haven't I told you that you work too hard?"

"It's not a hassle, old man. My job is straightforward enough, the load is what's putting me in a grind. It isn't that hard to grasp, not that you can truly understand. Since when was the last time you strained every ounce of concentration in your body? Or are you just living off the family fortune like you always do?"

"Hahaha! Don't be so ungracious, child. There's a limit to how much you can be rude to your father. Besides, I do more than just watch the sky go by."

"Ho~? Like what?"

"I travel!"

"Traveled. As in, you used to. How about you visit us for a chance? It could fix that stupid attitude of yours."

We could also use a 'virgin' hunting grounds anyway. Besides we could teach Ana all year around.

"Matter of fact, I can. Hell. I'll buy out a house— no, TWO HOUSES! Ana needs a proper guardian more than ever!"

"Proper guardian? Are you going senile?! If it weren't for me and Kenta, she wouldn't be as sweet today!"

"False, my daughter! It is I who has molded her current demeanor! Are you forgetting that you're talking to the person who babysat her whenever you needed it? From Japan to Britain, no less!"

"Gettin' uppity, aren't you now? Don't make me bring up that time during winter!"

Both of you become engaged in a heated debate, arguing over who's accountable for Ana's lovely personality. Although silly for people your age, it's simply a weird method of bonding; you and Beatrice like to interpret like that. Not that it's anything but a happy get-together, right? Disregarding its true meaning, others will see it as otherwise.

"Fine!"
"Fine!"

In sync, both lines are shut off as you slam the old telephone into its stand and as Beatrice hangs up in a huff. Unbeknownst to you, Ana eavesdropped your conversation from the kitchen, her grandfather and mother's voice as loud as thunder. Her expression was bored before she morphs it into her usual look upon your entrance, seeing the talk as a normal affair in life.

"Ana, where and what is your school? I'll need it for moving purposes," you said, gaining details of her local area. She complies, speaking of her city's workings while you pen things down on a gathered notepad.

"Seiun is a pretty great place. Actually, now that I think about it, it's sorta high-class. A big campus too, Grandpa."

"Is there anything that I should know about? Any outrageous customs?"

"No, you should be okay," Ana replied with a wave of a hand, eye gently closed to convey assurance. "Generally, foreigners are treated well because they're a peculiarity there. But if I did have anything to say, you'll just ignore it and do your own thing. Remembering correctly, you know how to speak Japanese, yes?"

"The POWs in my past encampments taught me some useful things. So yes," you answered in repetition. "I'll need to touch on it, though."

Your granddaughter giggles. "Mother incited you this much? Kinda unexpected to see this type of mood when she asked you to come live over there."

"I have my reasons. First and foremost, you; you're at the age where your innocence will be taken advantage of, and it's up to me to support your growth as a young woman. Not to mention love interest which is a topic all on its own."

"He~y, what did I say before? I can handle myself! Especially at school, if that's what your worried about the most. And who's to say that I should love or avoid a certain person?"

"Your father, Dear. Your father."

Ana, reflecting herself as a part of Beatrice, sighs. "You never change, do ya?"

Hours are fiercely spent to plan a sufficient landing of your overseas household, scrolling through lists of contacts to find, not one, but two desirable lots to live in Shiyouhama. When you're coming there is left unspecified.

> As soon as possible. You'll need to familiarize yourself with new grounds before Ana attends school again.

Later on, when night manifests its hold on the western part of the world, and its nocturnal population becoming active once again, you remain in your study to think of things that are to come. You have yet to tire, picking out books to satisfy your unrest; but after a few pages, you get up out of your seat to take out another. You realize the monotonous pattern, deciding to quit reading for something else that may help your predicament.

This turned into wandering, preferring to listen to the floorboards' incessant creaking as you walk from end to end in the mansion. "The Moon's full," you mutter, halting your advance within the hall. Certainly, it is; the reveal of Earth's satellite, in all of its form in which it glows an odd yellow, is a part of summer's gift as the seasons transition among themselves. The late hour makes its craters visible; the scale between it and you is blurred in that moment of admiration. Standing there in silence compelled you to look for the rabbit's shape on that mass of rock, but you couldn't, deeming the tale as absurd right then and there.

Leaving the view, you amble down the eastward portion of the whole house. On the way, you rate your family's heirlooms with no second or following thought: paintings are regarded with your highest esteem, busts of old ancestral members are glossed over in a way that didn't care of probable retribution from the grave, and curios that are hung up on the walls, or serving as ornaments in arbitrary quarters, are identified with little snippets of history.

"I should take these to the manor, " you said, assessing if the selected items are to be transported to Shiyouhama. "That leaves the other one... It will do as a magical laboratory, I reckon. It's definitely larger than the current facility here, so that's useful. That just leaves security, and with what these are worth, a vagrant might come by to steal 'em— no Jap going to steal something from me unscathed."

An urge guides you underground, to where you keep your evening disguise. The mask's polished clay, crafted to such an expert degree that it appears as plastic, clinks as you flick your forefinger against it. It was a gesture of good luck, a way to show off to yourself; the idea neglected the fact that it'll hurt— true, as you shake your wrist to stave away the pain. "I hate it when it hits the nail," you commented, shortly taking off.

The city is to be explored with no objective behind it; without a mission and without design, for it's to be a leisure pursuit. Climbing up to the rooftops does not prove to be difficult for a man like you, the slender frame of yours permitting you to vertically tread the buildings' ladders and pipes. Shrouded by the alleyways' dark, you seem to be a man-sized snake in how your maneuver. Creepily, if your human form is identifiable.

Arms folded behind your back, alongside your cane, you oversee the urban denizens below under the fluorescent lighting. "Hurt my eyes. Can't they change the neon into a softer color?" Lifting your mask, you mop up your face to relieve your sight.

A click of a gun travels to your ears, reinstating caution. Swiveling to the opposite direction, you meet Cateye, the outline of his feline coat separating itself from the surrounding veil of the purple, star-ladened sky.

"The last time I came across a man with a weird cane like that was two days ago. What's the get-up?" Just as you were about to retaliate— focused on the vigilante's center of mass, completely intent on firing a conjuration— he lowers his gun, detaching the blade from the barrel's underside and into a pouch; the rip of the velcro reverberated, scratching at the brain. You expressed both your curiosity and perplexity inaudibly, clarifying the situation on your own.

"What makes you so sure that I'm the same guy?" you riddled

"It's only a hunch." Cateye crosses his arms, wiggling his boots into the cement to station himself at the spot. Your opinion of him is contradicted; seeing that he's displayed as friendly, you're willing to transform it if the discussion doesn't devolve violently.

"Laying off the trigger, for now, I presume?" you say, tipping your hat to return the vigilante's kindness. "I'm not here to steal anything tonight. Just a late night stroll."

He grunts; whether he believes you or not is unknown. "I hope it stays that way... You don't look like a man with blood on his hands. So, at the very least, just keep away from murdering somebody 'n anybody, or I'll have to come in with full force."

"Should I take that as a threat? A warning?"

"Whatever's fine. You understand the bottom line of it."

As quietly as he appeared, Cateye left. Your personal atmosphere of tranquility is reforged, turning yourself to the streets below. A while after, finally feeling a wave of tiredness throughout your body, you retrace your path back to the manor. You have home planning to do.

A new thread will be up tomorrow.
