A bit ago, a guy called Gulag-Trapped QM ran a Fate quest by this name, but he disappeared some way into it. I posted in the end of that thread that I'd take over if he abandoned it, because I enjoy writing, I'm a fan of the Fate/franchise, and I was enjoying the quest. I never heard back, so here goes. I'm starting things over from the beginning, though, and I'm changing plenty of details, so whether you're new to the quest or you're coming from the last thread, I hope you'll enjoy it all the same.

As for the quest itself, it's a new Holy Grail War, with new Masters and Servants. Servant rules as well as magecraft rules are from nasuverse canon (If you catch me fucking up, feel free to let me know). You're not going into this as an informed magus, though, so you'll have to learn the rest of the details as you go.
I should mention that this is my first time running a quest, so don't hesitate to give me your feedback on the story and correct me if I'm violating some unwritten rule of quest-running.
Now, on to the quest.

You find yourself in a whirling mass of energy. At any rate, that's the best way you can think to describe it.
You seem to be floating weightlessly in some enormous space devoid of any solid mass. In fact, none of your senses register any input, other than sight; you can't even feel your own body.
This lack is more than made up for, however, by overstimulation of your vision. The space around you is completely filled with shifting, coruscating light. Not a single point of darkness exists, but every other color in the visible spectrum (and several that aren't) is burned into your vision. This should probably be blinding, but your vision remains mysteriously untouched.

All around you the colors spiral towards a central point some distance ahead of you, as if being pulled inwards by some inexorable force. They whip by you at incredible speed, and you find yourself struck by the cognitive dissonance of seeing such force at play without feeling any effects; if you could feel other sensory input right now, nausea would surely be making its appearance.

After spending some time watching the light show, you begin to adjust. The human mind really can adapt to anything, it seems. As alien as the display is, it doesn't seem to be changing significantly. You try to figure out what's going on here, and eventually decide you must be dreaming. The bizarre lights, the lack of sensation, the inability to move; they're all things that would only make sense in a dream.

It's certainly one of the stranger and more vivid dreams you've had. You usually don't remember your dreams, but you're certain they didn't feel this... bright. This clear.
As you wait for the thing to pass, you consider why such a vision is interrupting your rest. Has some part of your life, or the day you had, instigated this strange experience? You look back on the past day, and remember that...

>[ ] You're Yumigawa Rushorou, apathetic model student and student council president. You had a normal day, full of studying and close attention paid to peers and teachers alike. After classes you presided over a council meeting, went home, and studied after dinner. You did have a late night snack of cheese and crackers in addition to your normal glass of milk before bed, though, which deviated from your normal diet...

>[ ] You're Matsuda Ryuuta, bloody-knuckled delinquent. You skipped morning classes to go to an arcade, showed up to school for lunch, and napped through afternoon classes. Afterwards, you and your lackeys beat up a group of underclassmen who've been acting up and challenging your dominance of the school, and enjoyed frightening some fat-ass, balding office worker on your way home. That guy was shaking in his shoes! All in all, a pretty average day, maybe a bit better than average. Come to think of it, though, one of your cigarettes tasted pretty weird. Could one of your buddies have slipped you something?

>[ ] You're Ogawara Yatsuhide (Net handle Yatsuka), an antisocial otaku. You barely woke up in time to get to school, but there wasn't much to speak of after that. You tolerated your classes, avoided the eyes of fellow students, and quickly escaped from the 3D pigs. After getting home, you cooked yourself dinner since your parents are never around, washed the dishes, and did some gaming until Thursday's late-night anime came on. Tonight's episode of Pururin was particularly delectable, but when you got on 2ch to discuss it, some asshole was complaining about the animation! What the hell! You really tore into him, and finally got to bed around 3AM. Nothing in that schedule could contribute to bad dreams, could it?

>[ ] You're Keiseki Saburou, a 32-year-old office manager for a black company. Your day was normal, but that's hardly positive. You woke up at the office after being forced to sleep there by the ridiculously late overtime, worked all day, and wound up going to sleep in a sleeping bag under your desk again. You took four breaks today: one for each meal, and one to go to a public bath and wash off the grime. None of these was over 45 minutes. You haven't seen your apartment in 3 weeks, and dream of the day you can have a weekend off. It wouldn't surprising if you'd died in your sleep of overwork...

That's right, of course. Why would you feel uncertainty, even for a moment, about something as dear to you as your own identity? All this is probably no more than the dreamy product of indigestion, triggered by the unusual late-night cheese. No more than another mundane event in the endless string of mundane events you call your life.

Yumigawa Rushorou is a boy on strings. You've got no hobbies other than the sewing your mother's taught you, and no pursuits other than the academic focus of your father. You're a star student, and the very picture of the ideal Student Council president. You're even reasonably athletic. None of it interests you, though, and you drift through life without resistance or vigor, perfectly following whatever course your parents suggest.
Father is oblivious to your disinterest, and thinks you're the ideal son he's always wanted. Of course, he spends so much time working to support you and Mother that he can hardly be expected to know you. Mother, on the other hand, worries for you. That's plain, and it hurts you to see her that way. You may not find enjoyment in your own life, but you don't want that to sap the joy from your parents' lives.
Lately you've been starting to wonder if there's any point to it all. Your father seems quite overworked, and he's an executive; what kind of life are you going towards by following his example, excelling in school for the purpose of corporate prospects? You took up sewing to make your mother happy, because you knew she'd enjoy having an activity to share, why bother if your disinterest is ruining her hobby?

As you're taking advantage of the dream's inactivity to ponder on your life, something finally happens: You begin to move towards the same point the light is approaching... or maybe it's moving towards you, you've still got no senses but sight.
You draw closer and closer to the point at which all colors collide, and finally your sight is completely suffused with the burning light.

As vision fades, light and darkness are indistinguishable. Conscious thought ends at the center of the maelstrom.

I thought the char limit was 4K, but it's 3. Splitting the post.

Good God, it hurts!

You awaken to the full range of senses, returned with a vengeance. Every part of your body hurts. Every muscle feels pulled, your skin feels like you've got a full-body sunburn, and let's not even mention your mouth and eyes. Dryness beyond belief! On top of that, your ears are being half-deafened by the sound of roaring flames, and as you take a breath you can taste, smell, and feel a lungful of smoke. The roast meat smell of it is actually quite appetizing, though.
You open your eyes to discover that you're lying in what appears to be the ruins of a parking garage. Everything above the first 10 feet or so of wall's been blasted away, but you can recognize the distinctive layout, material, and paint that make those utilitarian buildings so special.
The pavement you're lying on is cracked. The walls are crumbling, and the one that rises behind you seems to be leaning towards you precariously. The sky is a hellish red, and the clouds are black smoke, rising from somewhere you can't see while lying down. To summarize, something has changed radically since last night.

Do you...

Paralyzed by indecision over whether you should stand up first or roll away from the crumbling cement hanging over you, you somehow botch the whole operation and try to both. What results is a bizarre crouch-roll that causes your glasses to fall from your face. As you blindly search around for the damn things, you never see the chunk of falling concrete that ends your life.

You... awaken? in what appears to be a martial arts dojo. Standing in front of you is an enraged woman wearing a kendo gi and hakama, with chestnut hair and an obviously hostile temperament. Before you can get your bearings, she starts shouting at you.

"HOW COULD YOU DIE SO EARLY IN THE GAME? YOU'RE NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO GET THIS STAMP! NOBODY SHOULD SEE THIS!"

Suddenly her attitude does a 180, and she turns away to morosely hunch over and poke at the floorboards.

"Your teacher is very disappointed in you, you know? I thought you were better than this, Ru-chan."

She seems to be crying a little. This is not one of your teachers, and never in your life have you been called 'Ru-chan'.

Finally, the strange woman turns to face you again, face radiating the internal war between hope and despair.

"Oh, well. Here's your Tiger Stamp, anyway. Try to do better next time, alright? Don't go playing in rubble, young man!"
>>
It's everybody's favorite segment, the Tiger Dojo!

Definitely Live Applause

When you die, I'm going to give you a dojo scene and a Tiger Stamp.
Collect them all for a special prize! The prize may or may not exist at this time.
Be warned, if you die repeatedly at the same choice, you will die permanently. This isn't an excuse to do stupid shit for no reason. I do hope it lessens the tension for people who are convinced Rushorou is going down the wrong path, though.

You get your arms up around your head and roll away from the wall just in time to escape the thing collapsing. This place is a deathtrap!
Fortunately you were successful in shielding your glasses from gravel, although you did tear your uniform a bit. You stand up, dust yourself off, and take better stock of the situation.

You're wearing your school uniform, a navy blazer of light summer fabric with an oxford cloth shirt, burgundy tie, matching slacks, and the standard black socks with loafers. This is odd, since it's the summer uniform. Yesterday you wore the winter uniform: a thicker black blazer, with a wool cardigan between that and the shirt, and a green striped tie. On top of that, you sleep in flannel pajamas. Evidently someone changed you, and did so incorrectly. Moving on to your pockets, you find that they're mostly empty. No wallet, phone, or keys adorns your person. The only thing you do have is a handful of loose change.
You're shocked out of this reverie of clothing and inventory as the sound of another crumbling wall reminds you of the surrounding danger. Why were you obsessing over your clothes when the strangest thing is your situation?

Looking around for a hopeful path to safety, you find two exits.
On your left is the entry/exit to the parking garage, a large ramp leading into a yawning hole in the wall that disgorges onto the street. Because of the downward-sloping angle of the cement and the portions of wall still standing, you can't make out what's beyond it, other than more cracked pavement.
On your right is an upward ramp, leading to a more intact part of the parking garage that you couldn't see while lying down. Although the edges are blasted away, the corner of the building still rises for two or three floors up. You're not sure there'd be an exit there, but you could definitely get a view of your surroundings.

Do you...
>[ ] Head for the exit. You don't want to spend any more time in this ruin than you have to.

You quickly march out of the parking garage, resolving to stay clear of any more places where falling concrete might spell your doom, and look around to see what you can discover.
Looking up the street to your left, you can see ruined buildings, all in the same state as the parking garage, on both sides. Smoke rises from numerous points on the horizon, and you can see countless fires.

Straight ahead of you, off in the distance, is a strange white light on the horizon. It seems to radiate out from some source of illumination on the ground, but you can't make out the source from street-level.
The white light pushes back the fire and shadow all around, and only where it occupies the horizon is can you see a faint glimmer of the ordinary night sky. The street you're standing on heads perpendicular to the direction of the light, so you'll need to make your way to a cross-street if you want to get there.

As you continue scanning the horizon, you progress towards the right, mostly seeing more of the same, until you look directly up the street. There, for the first time, you see rapid movement; signs of life!

You can see three people around your age, who appear to be delinquents. They're wearing tattered gakurans, one is holding a lead pipe, and one is smoking. The smoking delinquent has a pompadour, while one of the others has his hair bleached and spiked into a blonde nest of spikes.
What's really odd, though, is that they're fighting another trio. A trio of skeletons, or things like skeletons, armed with swords and bucklers. Skeletons on the streets of... of... actually, is this Tokyo? It's hard to say whether some calamity has happened to your home during the night or you've been transported to somewhere else entirely. Anyway, skeletons on the street, next to a wrecked car. It's very strange.
As you watch from down the street, the delinquent with a lead pipe crushes the skull of one of the skeletons. The thing keeps coming before it goes down, though, running him through with its rusty blade. The two fighters go down together, and at the same time another delinquent has his left arm chopped off. The smoker dodges the cut from his own skeleton before landing an uppercut, but it doesn't seem to make much of an impact on the strange thing.

You probably shouldn't just stand here staring, though. How do you feel about this spectacle?

>"I've got to help those guys! Delinquents or not, they're at least my fellow humans!"

>"They're fighting skeletons, and I want no part of that. In the world of gangs, it's kill or be killed; they must have been prepared for death from the beginning."

>"Those delinquents might know what's going on here. It pains me to help that kind of scum, but it'd probably be in my best interest to keep them alive."

Good. There were a couple of grammatical errors, but that's inconsequential as long as you stick to the schedule and write as well as this.

Pretty much perfect, except for the hair, which would probably be neater on a Student Council President than on a generic anime protagonist.

Deciding you can't just stand and watch your fellow students get butchered by monsters, you begin to sprint towards the fight. It takes you several minutes, during which the second delinquent collapses, bleeding profusely from his severed arm. The remaining delinquent deftly weaves between the two skeletons' attacks, and backs off, bringing the fight closer to you in the process.

Finally you meet up with the group. Summoning all your courage, you put your full strength into a kick aimed at the right-hand skeleton's leg. Its poorly balanced weight goes down like a sack of flour, but it almost slices your chest open as it falls. You almost manage to evade the blow, but catch a long graze down your stomach from the tip of its blade.
Before the skeleton can get back up, you tackle it, holding the thing down. You're not confident you can crush its head, like the delinquent with the pipe, but you can at least immobilize the thing.

At the same time as you're occupied bringing down one skeleton, the delinquent is carrying out his own battle. It seems he's managed to read the skeletons' attacks, wide and clumsy as they are, and he circles around one, trips it up, and stomps on the back of its head, cracking the skull. After that, he continues stomping on it, loudly cursing the thing that murdered his friends as he pounds the skull, first into fragments, and then into powder beneath his shoe.
The skeleton slowly stops twitching, the life draining out of it like invisible blood. After that, he executes the skeleton you're holding down and takes you by the shoulder to help you up.

The delinquent grins and puts out a hand to shake. Talking around his cigarette, he says, "Thanks for the assist, four-eyes! If it wasn't for you, I'd be dead right about now. I'm Matsuda Ryuuta. You got a name?"

This is my first dialogue update, so it's something I'd like to get out of the way. Obviously Fate is Japanese, and the characters are Japanese, so using honorifics seems like the first choice. On the other hand, I am writing in English, so maybe you'd prefer I stick to English modes of address. Poll time!

You give the delinquent an appraising look. You've never really had any reason to talk to his sort before. You went to a good enough school that there were almost no delinquents, and those that were there were handled by the disciplinary committee, not the student council. Still, right now you're allies of circumstance. You muster as much friendliness as you can put into your tone under the circumstances.

"Yumigawa Rushorou. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Matsuda-kun"
As you shake his hand, you're shocked by the crushing pressure Matsuda puts into the action. A handshake is supposed one of the pleasantries of making a new acquaintance, conveying the mutual surety of future cooperation, but this feels more like the prelude to combat! He's probably been influenced by too many American action movies. The fact that he keeps grinning as he grinds your knuckles together hardly improves the situation.
Finally Matsuda lets your aching hand go, and you open your mouth to ask him if he knows anything about the situation. He beats you to it, though.

"Good to know you too, Yumigawa. Now, brass tacks of the situation. You look like the kind of guy who usually knows what's up with the authorities, yeah? You just ooze 'student council,' even all beat up like you are. So where are we? Me and my boys just woke up in that burning house back there," he hooks a thumb back over his shoulder to point at a recently collapsed building, "and barely got out in time before the thing went up. No idea how we got here, and before we knew it, fuckin' skeletons were tryin' ta kill us! Did kill us, in the case of my buddies! So level with me, Yumigawa. What the hell's goin' on here?"

...oh boy. This is hardly what you'd hoped to hear. It seems Matsuda is as marooned as you are, and if two people have been transported here unaware, there's a chance the next people you find will be in a similar situation. Matsuda's been steadily raising his voice and bringing his face closer to yours as he talks, in the classic delinquent intimidation move; it's getting pretty unpleasant. You try to explain your own situation and calm him down as best you can, making conciliatory hand gestures as you do so.

"Look, I'm not in any more authority here than you are, Matsuda-kun. From what you've said, we're in the same situation. I just woke up in the parking garage down the street, with no idea how I got here, or even where 'here' is. Yelling at me isn't going to get you any answers. I'll admit you were right about my position in school, though; I've been student council president in every year from primary until today."

Matsuda clicks his tongue in irritation, but backs off. After he glowers for a minute, his face brightens.

"Alright then. Guess I'll be calling you Kaichou; rolls off the tongue easier than Yumigawa. Now, since we're both at sea here, I'll listen to your suggestions. Whaddya wanna do from here?"

How do you feel about this state of affairs, Rushorou?

Takes the vote by a landslide! Are you trying to follow Shirou's example, or just looking for more characters?
And East is unanimous. Why? FUCK WEST, apparently.
I'll be honest, this was the option I expected nobody to vote for. I just put it in there as the token "ally of justice" option. Every day has surprises, huh.

After giving the matter plenty of consideration, you decide that the most important thing now is finding out if there are any other survivors.
"We need to go looking for other survivors, Matsuda-kun. If you and I have been transported here without knowing how, the same thing could have happened to any number of other people."
Matsuda looks a bit irritated by the suggestion, but after mulling it over he agrees.

"Look, I ain't the hero type. Only people I'd normally stick my neck out for are either back home or lying dead up the street there. I'd say we get outta this disaster area ASAP, but I don't have a clue where to go to get that done. Guess we may as well do it your way."

With the reluctant delinquent in tow, you look up and down the street. Both options present more or less the same prospect, of smoke, fire, and rubble. After a short consideration, you arbitrarily decide to head up the street, in the direction Matsuda came from. It's a slight uphill slope.

You and Matsuda head east for fifteen minutes before you encounter any significant change to your situation. You cover five blocks, but each intersection is blocked by wrecked cars, fire, or rubble. Finally, something significant occurs. Up ahead is a clear intersection, and you can see a large group of skeletons emerging from the street to your right. As you watch, they turn the corner and begin marching towards you at an unchanged pace, as if they haven't seen you yet. From the other end of the block, you can see that two of the seven skeletons are armed with large maces, while the other five have the same scimitar and buckler you saw before.

"Alright, Kaichou. We're in luck, it's a whole troop of monsters. Let's get these bastards!"

Matsuda clenches his fists and gets ready to dash towards the group of skeletons. He's raring to go, clearly still furious about the deaths of his two friends, but you're not sure you two can take on seven enemies after the trouble you had with two of them. There are some still-standing buildings around you, and the skeletons don't seem too bright. Maybe the wiser move here would be to hide and let them pass by.

Do you...

I can't imagine we'll get much out of taking out the skeletons aside from letting Matsuda blow off some steam, and there's probably an easier group of skeletons to do that with. Discretion is the better part of valor, and all that.
>>
>>3321609
I'm realizing that I didn't make this clear, but the parking garage had its roof and upper floors blown off, whereas the buildings here are mostly still attached to their roofs. There are shattered windows, holes in the walls and roofs, and a ton of burn marks, but the shape of the buildings isn't gone.

Before Matsuda can go for the skeletons, you put your arm across his chest to hold him back. What does he think he's doing?

"Matsuda! Hold off," you hiss angrily, "Look, you and your friends are experienced fighters, right? But you lost those two when the numbers were even. Running in against seven of those things would be suicide."

"What?" Matsuda almost roars at you, whirls around and grabs you by the collar, pulling you in close and winding up to break your nose with a crushing fist. He hesitates, though, and after looking at you for a moment, the spirit flows out of him. He lets go of your collar and turns aside to spit out the dogend of his cigarette.

"Aw, hell. I guess you're right. Those things don't feel a punch like your average punk. Let's go hide in that building, let 'em go by."

Before you can respond, Matsuda is jogging towards a ruined office building. You follow along, shocked that he was thinking of the same plan you were. Matsuda arrives ahead of you, and after struggling with the broken automatic door for a moment, kicks it in. As the rusty frame crumbles with the creaking of metallic grief, you reflect that wherever this place is, it must have been dilapidated well before the current tragedy. Then Matsuda is inside and out of sight.

Finally you catch up to Matsuda, and the two of you huddle behind a desk. You're just in time; no sooner do you get behind the cover than you hear the skeletons making their shambling way past. The glassy design of the office makes it an imperfect hiding place, but the skeletons don't even look to the sides. You might have been able to hide from them just by standing on the sidewalk.

"You know," you mutter, "the glass on that door was knocked out anyway. You could have just crouched and gone through."

Matsuda favors you with a look of wounded pride as he lights another cigarette. Where is he getting those things, anyway? And matches, too?

"Shut it, Kaichou. Hunchin' down to go through a hole ain't the badass way. We bust our own way in."

Turning away, he mutters to himself, presumably thinking you can't hear him over the ambient noise of the fire.

"Man, look at me explaining the badass life to this nerd. Can't believe it. I'm turnin' out no better than Hayashida."

You wait in silence until the noise of the skeletons fades totally, and then get up to survey the street. It's empty again, and you now have an open intersection. As you survey the options, you decide to go...

You decide to take a left, and head North. Whatever's making those noises, there's probably someone in danger. It sounds quite violent.
For a while, there's no real change from what you've seen so far. Ruined city towers line the street, wrecked cars are scattered here and there, and you've seen enough charred corpses to fill a small graveyard. As you walk, Matsuda begins kicking a medium-sized rock from foot to foot, keeping it going along with him.
Eventually, though, the scenery does start to shift. The buildings are changing from offices and other skyscrapers to smaller shops, indicating that you're making headway towards a residential area. The wrecked cars and corpses thin out too, and the smoke and heat both lessen slightly as you go. The upward slope is more significant, and you're climbing a low hill as you hear the sounds of battle grow louder.
You're fairly sure it's battle, anyway. The sounds of clanging metal and crunching stone aren't things you're familiar with, but after seeing those skeletons the conclusion seems fair enough.

Finally you crest the hill, and you and Matsuda are greeted by a scene of chaos. At the top of the hill is another intersection, streets sloping down on all four sides. The stores have gotten small enough by this point that the whole area feels more like a hilltop arena than the enclosed space downtown. The wrecked cars are here, but far more brutalized than anywhere else; they've been crushed, dented, pierced... one has been cut cleanly in half!
Two shadowy figures are battling, almost too fast for the eye to follow. They come together, exchange a flurry of blows, and part with incredible force! Even from the very edge of the area where they're visible, you feel like their blades could take your life at any moment, and whenever they impact each other, the shockwave physically impacts your heart-rate.
Although it's difficult to make out any details of the rapid fighters, you can vaguely tell that one seems to be a spearman, unadorned or in light armor. The other uses a longsword, and is wearing... a dress? Some kind of skirted armor? You can't really tell, as they're both totally bathed in shadow. The smoke of the fires, which had been thinning, seems to cling to them like a second skin.
As you watch, the spearman leaps in for a thrust, but the swordsman meets his attack with a sweeping blow and repels it. The spearman is launched back and lands on the roof of a car, still on his feet, with a thundering clang; in an instant the car becomes a metal dish, but the spearman leaps back into the fray unshaken.
>>
Although you're tempted to just watch the hypnotic dance of force and steel, you realize that there's more to the situation. A third figure, a student like yourself, is sitting sprawled on the ground, right at the center of the battlefield. Even from here, you can see him shaking. You wonder if one of these things (for surely they cannot be people) is protecting him, or if they're just fighting over the helpless prey.

Watching the spectacle, you...

>[ ] Rush in to protect your fellow student. Get him out of there yourself!

>[ ] Try to avoid the fight. Maybe you can slip by, and keep heading North while the fighters are occupied?

>[ ] Call out to your fellow student. Getting between those two fighters is too dangerous for you, but maybe you can shock him out of his stupor.

Probably an amalgamation of every single one of them combined into a single person to be stupidly average in terms of stats.

For appearance, it's stuck between:
a) a really really really generic looking guy that looks stupidly familiar to everyone, but nobody can lay a finger on where they've seen them.
b) they look different depending on the person seeing them. So one could see either a balding middle-aged man, or a teenager with long flowing hair

For classes, they'd most likely be able to be every standard class (with heavy disposition to Lancer and Archer) except maybe Caster or Assassin unless Military Engineers are considered Casters.

Doubtful. The closet thing would be an inventor on the level of Tesla or Babbage, and they only get shoved into Caster because it's the closest fit.

>Noble Phantasm

Haven't given much thought to it, but the most basic idea I ever got was them summoning every single Unknown Soldier that ever died to fight as a massive army spanning across conflict in human history. You'd have soldiers from all time periods and all nations ranging from Roman legionnaires, Napoleonic infantry, Crusaders, peasant levies, WW1 soldiers, Mongolian horse archers, etc all in a massive army. The main weakness would be the fact that each individual soldier is on the level of a normal human, and horrendously outmatched when compared to a Servant in one on one combat. But then again, throw enough shit at the wall, and something is bound to stick.
>>
>>3322064
If you summon every unknown soldier ever, you're also going to summon a lot of Age-of-Gods humans. I think some of those could stand up to Servants.

Wow, you guys really trust Matsuda's opinion, huh? That's weirdly touching...

This is all too much for you to process. Should you try to help the kid? Call out to him? Just watch?
Overloaded by the bizarre situation, you turn to Matsuda for assistance.
"Matsuda-kun, look at that! It's incredible; impossible! I mean, I don't think I've ever seen anything move that fast! And... there's another student, just sitting there in the middle of it!"

Matsuda takes a long drag on his cigarette and blows out a cloud of smoke as he contemplates the situation. Then he turns to you, a wide grin spreading on his face.

"Yeah, I gotta hand it to 'em. Blows every fight I ever saw before right oughta the water. Which one do you think'll win? Now me, I think the guy with the spear's gonna take the fight. Sure, the one with the sword's got the strength advantage, but I've seen plenty o' guys like that go down. They just rely on that power, and when the faster fella gets in, it's lights out. Now, spear over there has the speed, he's got the maneuverability. It's just a matter of time."

Unbelievable. This guy isn't even considering what you two are going to do here. Shocked at Matsuda's inane outpouring, you open your mouth to respond. Before you can get a word out, though, Matsuda sees the look on your face.

"Oh, what am I thinking? Of course you don't wanna just talk about who's gonna win. Not with a fight this crazy right in front of us."
Matsuda fishes a in his pants, eventually locating his wallet and pulling out a bill.
"No, for a fight this big there's only one thing to do: bet! Here, I'll put 2000¥ on the guy with the spear. Whaddya say, Kaichou? Match the bet?"

...You suppose he is a delinquent after all. Maybe this was the best you could hope for when asking someone who fights as a hobby for advice on dealing with a fight.
While you heard out Matsuda, the fight in the intersection continued, and true to Matsuda's prediction the sword wielder is getting the worst of it. His hits are definitely harder, but he can't consistently keep the spearman away, and he's taking repeated light cuts. The student in the middle of the fight remains paralyzed by fear.

Do you...

Non-serious or otherwise, there were a lot of insults thrown around over it in the quest Gulag was running, and it's a subject that divides the Fate fanbase quite a bit, at least in the west.

Eh, you forget that Yumigawa has a character: he's a star student, inoffensive, boring. He never offends or charms anyone and only got to be the President because of his academic record, and his only real personality is a desire to keep his parents happy.
This is not the kind of guy who would just decide to watch someone in danger for fun. Maybe because he was paralysed by gear or indecision, but not because it was fun.
The choice to keep spectating would be quite out-of-character.
>>
>>3322193
Weird, that doesn't sound like the character I wrote.
>>
Personally, what I have in mind for Rushorou is like an immature Patrick Bateman. Obsessively detail-oriented, perfect at success in a structured system (able to be both a star student and enough of a charmer to be consistently elected StuCo president) but not enjoying any of it and starting to break down.
Obviously now he's totally off his game in the unfamiliar world of the HGW, and that's just throwing him for even more of a loop.
I attempted to convey that with stuff like the detailed observation and description of his clothing, but I guess I'm not that great at conveying character yet.
>>
>>3322198
Now obviously this doesn't mean he has to become a serial killer. That was just the outlet Bateman found. In the context of the cutthroat Moonlit World, he could just as easily wind up on the side of justice; it depends on how you play him.
>>
>>3322193
Rushorou isn't himself boring. From the perspective of the other students at his old school, he's basically perfect. Athletic, smart, charming, fashionable, you name it. His problem is that he finds everything else boring. He doesn't have much of a personality, but he's excellent at faking one.
Make sense?
>>
>>3322198
>>3322199
Interesting.
I saw him as a bit of that as well, being a perfectionist because he wants to live up to his parents unreasonable standards and believing that everyone has those same standards. He tries to be the best that he can possibly be because he firmly believes that his best is the minimum that he's expected to give, and buries the stress deep down. Someday he'll explode, but till then he tries to be a star student, a good athlete, a nice guy and a hero, only to fall short of his own unrealistic expectations.

Of course, nobody notices because he's hidden it well and comes off as bland.
>>
>>3322203
You felt like his parents have unreasonable standards? Again, I'm confused. I wrote very little about them, but it was supposed to convey that they're utterly normal. Pretty great, in fact. Father just wants his son to be successful, Mother just wants to support her child and spend some time with him now and again.
>>
>>3322201
>>3322203
So, in summary, he looks perfect, but is actually a perfectionist. He's obsessed with being the best, doing the best, helping as many people as he can, because of the standards he picked up from his parents, and his deep-seated desire for approval, not only from others but also from himself.
>>3322205
No, just making up that part. Who says they have to be as normal and well-adjusted as they look?
>>
>>3322207
At the risk of ranting, I'll make another post.

I should point out that Japanas a culture places a lot of value on reputation and face, to the point where families will often lock up their mentally-ill children instead of seeking treatment and taking the risk that people will find out about their children. Who's to say Yumigawa's parents aren't even more obsessed with their reputation than the average Japanese parents?

Then again, this is more of a suggestion than a summary. Sweets is free to write what he feels is correct in the end.
>>
>>3322207
>Who says they have to be as normal and well-adjusted as they look?
Well, I do. Because I'm the author. Rushorou is the psycho of the family; his parents are just good people.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to railroad you guys. I'm trying to give you as much freedom as possible in figuring out where things go from here.
I also want to be totally clear on the backstory, though. So, hopefully this clears it all up.
>So, in summary, he looks perfect, but is actually a perfectionist.
Sort of, yes. He gets perfect results through effort, but isn't really pushing himself to do so. He just doesn't have anything he'd rather do.
>He's obsessed with being the best, doing the best, helping as many people as he can
Yes, yes, and no. He's resolved to be the best at whatever he does, because he's been told that's how to be happy, and because it's very doable for him.
He doesn't really care one way or another about other people, and certainly not about helping them. He's done exactly what's expected of the president, no more and no less. He can put on a great show of altruism during a campaign, if that's needed, but doesn't feel any. Of course, if you want to steer him in that direction, maybe he can discover the joy of helping people during the war?

>Deep-seated desire for approval
Not even a little bit. He does what his parents tell him because he has no motivation for himself, not because he desperately seeks approval.

Now, I did say in the background post at the beginning that you care about your parents and feel guilt over the way your apathy is hurting your mother. That's true. Rushorou's parents are the only people he's felt empathy for in his life so far, motivated by the ties of blood and the gratitude he feels towards them for the care he's received.
Again, if you want to play a hero, he can discover empathy during the quest. This is just what's happened up until now.
>>

You decide to call out to the student in the middle of the battlefield. On the one hand, you feel it would be wise to gather as many of your fellow transportees as possible and try to work together to get home. On the other hand, you're certain that even with your record at the school track, you're not fast enough to dart in and save the other student under your own power, avoiding the superhuman fighters in the process.
Hopefully this will end his fear-induced paralysis and convince him to run towards you and Matsuda, and then the three of you can escape together.
Thus resolved, you shout at the top of your lungs:

"HEY, YOU THERE! GET OUT OF THAT BATTLEFIELD! YOU'RE IN DANGER!"
...silence descends...
The other student nervously looks around towards you and gets up, starting to make for you. At the same time, however, the two fighters have stopped their feud and focused on the newcomers. There's a moment of hesitation, when you're not sure yet that this is going bad. They might decide you aren't a threat, after all. One of them could take the opportunity to attack the other. They could focus on the moving student instead of you, they could...
A shadow moves, too fast for you to see, and there's a spear sprouting from your chest. The pain is unparalleled; exquisite; a sensory confection of piercing, shredding, twisting, and burning, starting at the heart and raging through every vein in your body from there. You have very little time to experience it before you die.

You come to, once again, in a strange martial arts hall. The mysterious kendo woman is standing in front of you again, and how do you keep waking up while standing anyway?

It's one of life's great mysteries.

Contrary to the last time, the hakama-clad woman is wearing a big smile.

"I see now, so there was no point in my advice last time! Giving an idiot like you advice is...""
" Meaningless. "

...the smile drains away, leaving only the rage of a tiger.

"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? How did you die here? Didn't you learn anything from the award-winning original work starring me, humanity's favorite heroine? Don't you remember when Shirou ran into two servants fighting and died because he made too much noise? Was my poor boy's suffering worth nothing to you?"

The incredible volatility of this woman's emotions is frankly stunning. In no time at all, she goes from happy, to enraged, to advertising, to tearfully evoking someone you've never heard of while shaking you back and forth by the lapels. Finally she wipes away her tears and lets you regain your posture.

"Well, Ru-chan," she declares, pointing a decisive finger between your eyes, "I'll give you this advice and this Tiger Stamp even if you don't pay attention to what's good for you. That's what it means to be a big-hearted teacher! Whatever you do, even if you want to save the other boy, don't make too much noise and attract the attention of those phantoms! They can kill you as easily as I can do..."
THIS!

This final exclamation is punctuated by a sharp impact to the side of your head from her shinai. But how? You didn't even see her pick one up...

Now, do you...

...on second thought, maybe Matsuda has a point. You've never been one to stand around and watch fights before, but getting involved, or even getting their attention, could be pretty dangerous.
You turn back to Matsuda, boldly meet his gaze, and declare:
"I don't have any money."

Matsuda blows a puff of smoke in your face and disappointedly returns the ¥2000 bill to his pocket.

"Oh well, that's life, I guess. What happened, you get mugged by skeletons?"

You meet Matsuda's smirking joke with an impassive gaze.

"No, I actually woke up with nothing but the clothes on me. I've been wondering why you didn't get the same treatment, to be honest."

This seems to get to him a bit more. He stops grinning, and thinks about it for a moment. If he comes to any conclusion, though, it's a private one, as he replies,

"Guess everybody's different. Not like any o' this makes sense anyway."

As you two are discussing your respective inventory situations, the fighting winds to a close. As Matsuda predicted, the spearman seems to be winning, inflicting repeated light wounds to his enemy that slow the sword-user down bit by bit. Just as he gets ready to deliver the final blow, however, his opponent unleashes some kind of burst of energy that sends shockwaves in all directions, but has its primary effect in sending the sword-user flying up to a rooftop. Spinning on his heel after landing, the sword-user flees the scene, with the spearman in chase.

Now it's just you, Matsuda, and the unidentified spectator.

Do you...

Since this was such a dangerous encounter, I'd like to share how it worked with you.

Finally, spectating had DC 10. Fail and the other guy dies, but there's no chance of your death.

With the mysterious fighters out of the way, you're fairly sure it's safe to approach the other student at this point. Just to make sure, you scan the horizon before advancing. No movement. The other student starts to get to his feet, fearfully looking around, as you jog up to meet him.

"Lucky you got through that in one piece, huh? I'm Yumigawa Rushorou, and this is Matsuda Ryuuta. Did you wake up here without knowing why too?"

The guy looks at you like a rabbit staring down a snake. He's almost a head shorter than you, about 5'5", and for a few moments he just stands there, quivering. As he does so, you take in his appearance. Long, unkempt hair, large bags under his eyes, and a slovenly posture all attest to a life of weakness, but you can't help noticing that his uniform is from an even more prestigious school than yours. Damn!
Then he manages to open his mouth and start talking, finally.

"Nice to... I mean, yeah, that was, well, er..."

He trails off, stumbling over his own words; takes a deep breath, and tries again.

"Y-y-yeah, I was afraid those things would, ah, kill me. I'm, er, I'm O-Ogawara. Ogawara Yatsuhide. I w-woke up just, just lying right there, you know? Just right there underneath them. Ah, that's right. N-nice to, er, to meet you, Yumigawa-san. Wh-what's wrong with this place? It's like the beginning of an action anime. I half expect Kenshiro to come walking through one of these shops, you know? Hehehe"
You notice his speech mysteriously clears up as soon as he brings up anime.

All you can do in response to Matsuda's query is shrug.

"I'm not sure how all this happened myself; or even where we are. Matsuda-kun and I are pretty much in the same situation you are." Pointing over Ogawara's shoulder to the North, you continue, "One thing I have noticed, though, is that there's some kind of white light coming from the horizon to the North, and that's where the fire seems to thin out. We're heading towards that. Why don't you join us, Ogawara-kun?"

As Ogawara turns to follow your finger towards the horizon, Matsuda chimes in, patting the smaller boy on the back hard enough to make him stumble, and then grabs him by the shoulder to steady him, so the three of you stand side-by-side, looking out over the horizon.

"Kaichou's got it right, Squirt! You oughta come with us. On your own, a little guy like you's more'n likely gonna wind up a bloody mess."

Although Matsuda started out that statement full of energy, the cheer drained away towards the end, as he no-doubt recalled his unfortunate friends. He takes a long drag on his cigarette as Ogawara nervously disentangles himself from his arm to whisper in your ear, "Y-Yumigawa-san, are you two, ah... in some k-kind of organization?"

You chuckle at the obvious misunderstanding. "No, Matsuda-kun just likes giving people nicknames, and I'm the student council president back home. Good luck getting him to stop calling you Squirt, by the way."

As you wait for Ogawara to decide whether he'd like to come with you, you survey the view of the city from the top of the hill. The road you're on now continues north into a residential suburb, with significantly more open space than the downtown area you'd been in earlier. There are still fires dotting the landscape, but the area seems less oppressive, at least. Whether the heat really has diminished or you've just gotten used to it, you're not sure. Down below, you can see numerous squads of skeletons patrolling the suburban streets, armed with motley sets of halberds, scimitars, maces, and other weapons too small for you to make out from above. You can't see any overall pattern to the way they're wandering; they just seem to shamble along aimlessly, turning corners at random intervals.
There are also occasional dots of concentrated darkness and movement, probably places where more high-grade warriors like those you saw with Ogawara are fighting their mysterious battles. You make a mental note to avoid those streets.
Although the road you're following continues directly North as it descends the hill you're on now and goes into the suburb, it doesn't go straight to the light on the horizon. Instead, some distance ahead there's another hill, this one covered in dense woods, which are now lit up by numerous patches of flame. Rather than ascending that hill, the road skirts around it, curving west. The light seems to be coming from some point behind the hill, even further North.
>>
Finally Ogawara makes his decision.
"I-if you two will have me, I'll go with you. Thank you f-for help... for h... for... I-I appreciate your generosity!"
Talking really isn't his strong suit.

Moving on, do you want to...

>[ ] Follow the road you've taken so far, hoping it takes you through the suburb and loops around the hill to your destination with no problems.

>[ ] Take the first branching road West you see, and then make for the North once you're well away from the next hill. It may delay you, but it'd be worth it to make sure you avoid that fire.

>[ ] Head straight for the next hill, and climb it when you reach it, cutting through the forest. It's not as if the entire hill is on fire, and the faster you get to the light in the North, the better. It almost feels like something's pulling you towards it...

Forests are always safe and trustworthy!
>>
>>3323729
>[ ] Formulate a different plan entirely
Take the first branching road west, but start moving north as soon as we can see a road that goes beyond the hill. I'm not so much concerned about the fire as I am what we might run into without good visibility around the hill. The bone boys can't see for shit, so as long as we can locate them before they realize we exist, we're in good shape. We're also less likely to run into a servant that would subsequently run us though.

Examining the layout of the city below, you decide that heading straight for the hill would be unwise. The suburbs are one thing, but once you get to the base of the hill, the forest could impede your vision, and the lack of cross-streets branching off from the road that wraps around it makes you nervous.
Instead, you figure the best path to take is West, until you find a road that leads North without intersecting the hill. It'll be a bit slower, but you'll have a much easier time avoiding skeleton patrols and shadow-warriors.
You explain this plan to Matsuda and Ogawara. Matsuda gives it some thought, before favoring you with a grin and declaring, "You've got this figured out pretty well, Kaichou; I think you coulda made it in a gang after all!"
Ogawara just nods and says, "S-sounds good," looking too nervous about the situation to offer any real input.
Course thus set, the three of you set out down the hill.

All in all, the descent is easy, and after a few intersections with wreckage blocking the street, you're able to make a left turn. It seems like you were right about things getting less devastated the farther North you go. The heat is less intense, there are fewer wrecked cars, and the suburb feels more abandoned than destroyed. Before long, you're fairly sure you've reached a Northward street that'll take you by the hill with no trouble, when you're paralyzed by a low, intense, beastly noise. A growl that seems to come from some enormous hound, emanating from behind you.

You spin around, cold sweat beading on your forehead to see...

Matsuda, looking embarassed. He lets out a chuckle, and shamefacedly explains, "It's been a pretty rough day, you know? All this fightin' and walkin' really takes it outta me, and I'm positive I'd have had a beef bowl or two by this time, normally. Sorry ta give ya a start, though."

Sighing at your own nervousness, you continue. As you head North once again, your progress is impeded by frequent needs to stop and let Ogawara rest. He just doesn't have the stamina necessary for this kind of cross-town hike. Hell, you're getting pretty tired yourself, despite your record at the track.

Still, the three of you soldier on, weariness and hunger taking its toll. The lack of monstrosities is almost uncanny; you were certain you saw the town filled with them from the hill, but you don't run into a single one as you walk through the suburbs.

Finally, you make it past the hill, off to your right, and the source of the mysterious light is within reach. Another road, heading Southeast, ascends the hill from the Northwest, and you can see that on this side the forest is quite unburnt. Indeed, the flames stop at a sharp divide, like the border between light and shadow on the moon, and beyond them the trees are green and lush.
At the top of this new road is a stone wall, topped by wrought iron ornamentation, with a large wrought iron gate at the road. The top of a small white building, radiating pure light, is barely visible above the top of the wall, but you can't make out more without ascending the hill.

Having finally almost reached your goal, you decide to...

Raid a couple of the abandoned houses to see if we can find any food. No matter the size, a fighting force operates like shit if it isn't properly supplied, and we have no idea who or what's up there. At the very least, we should get Matsuda something to eat since he's pretty much our muscle. Presuming we can find anything that's both a) in existence and b) edible, we'll eat it, and either after the snack or if we can't find anything we can head up the hill.

You look longingly at the wall on the hill. Right past that gate could be the answer to all your questions! Before you can allow yourself to rush up the hill, though, there's something that must be addressed.

That something is hunger. You're hungry. Matsuda's hungry. Ogawara's probably hungry too. You're in a suburb full of abandoned buildings. One of these houses must have something to eat and a working kitchen!

"Matsuda-kun," you say, determination in your voice, "We need to get something to eat. Did you see any of these houses as being particularly easy to get into?"

You saw him eyeing the abandoned houses as they became in progressively better condition towards the light source, and as you'd guessed he's got one picked out already.

"That one right over there," he says, gesturing to a mostly intact upper-middle class domicile on the right-hand side of the street. "Door's practically hangin' off the hinges, but the rest looks just fine."

Before you can say more, Matsuda spins on his heel, marches over to the house, and kicks in the door. As he predicted, the hinges snap off with a pitiful clang. Matsuda might be more hungry than you'd guessed! Jogging after Matsuda, you catch up with him in the kitchen. It's oddly clean. No part of the house's interior shows signs of the pervasive destruction outdoors, and the kitchen in particular is spotless. The walls are covered in cabinets full of clean dishes, there's a large sink and dishwasher, a gleaming refrigerator, and a well-appointed oven/stovetop setup. Even the counters are spotless.

What the kitchen lacks is any fresh food. The refrigerator and freezer are completely empty, and the only food that can be found is in cans. Canned peas, beans, corn, tuna, sardines, anchovies, okra, tomatoes, and just about every other food item you've seen canned is stuffed into the lower cabinets, but there's absolutely nothing fresh, or even in jars.

Still, food is food, and the cans can supply you with the necessities of life. A more pressing problem is the lack of electricity, but fortunately the stovetop runs on gas, which is still connected. One of Matsuda's matches supplies the spark, and you have everything you need to prepare food. What you don't have is anyone to cook it. At first, Matsuda looks at you expectantly, since this was your idea.

Unfortunately, "My mother cooks all the food in my house," is the only reply you can offer him. Matsuda commiserates. "Yeah, I guess that ain't surprisin'. My ma says a man shouldn't even go in the kitchen. Ta be honest with ya, this's the first time I've touched a stove."
>>
At this point, Ogawara works up the courage to interject. "Er, excuse me, you two. My p-parents are almost never, ah, around. And so, you see, er, b-because of that, well, I-I've had to, ah, to learn to cook for m-myself. I can prepare food for us."

Overjoyed, Matsuda throws a friendly arm around the smaller boy's shoulders. "I knew you were a natural-born gofer, Squirt! Perfect! You can get me'n Kaichou our food while we handle the fightin'!"

Finding this dubious cameraderie profoundly uncomfortable, Ogawara wriggles out of Matsuda's grip and shoos the two of you out of the kitchen. With an apron on and a utensil in hand, he seems to change almost totally, picking up a hitherto unseen authority and losing his stutter.

About two hours later, Ogawara emerges with three bowls of some sort of western-looking stew. The mysterious mixture looks forbidding, but Ogawara defends his creation with pride.

"This is really tasty, you know," he exclaims, puffing out his thin chest, "It's a gumbo made with okra, black beans, tomatoes, and all three kinds of fish in the cabinet, and I'd say I did an excellent job with the limited ingredients I had to work with! I also managed to find some canned peppers and a pot of salt that you two missed."

Unable to resist hunger any longer, you and Matsuda give in and sample the dubious stew. Against all odds, though, it's somehow delicious! You've never had gumbo before, but make a mental note to look it up when you get home.

Fortified with the necessities of life, you're ready to head for the hill once again, although the sky has darkened significantly since you woke up. It's not night, exactly, but if you could see the sun you'd be tempted to call it sunset.

Now, do you...

This is it. You've crossed an apocalyptic city, fought the undead, narrowly avoided being killed by warriors covered in smoke, and even eaten gumbo. Now it's time to get to the bottom of this mystery.
"Matsuda-kun, Ogawara-kun, are you ready?" You look to either side, confirming that your companions are as eager to climb the hill as you are.
"Oh, you know I'm ready, Kaichou!" Matsuda practically shouts; the food has really reinvigorated him.
"Y-y-yeah, I guess we've got to take a look, right? Hopefully we can even, ah, even get h-home." Ogawara may have a hard time expressing it, but you can see the gleam of excitement in his eyes.

And so, you begin climbing the road up the hill. As you make your way up, the buildings give way to trees, and you feel a profound cooling sensation. The heat of the omnipresent fires is, for the first time, not oppressing you. The roaring that's been in the background noise fades too, as does the stench of death. The closer you get to the wall of the property on the hill, the more the destruction around you fades away. At last you're walking up a tree-lined twilit road, no different than any you'd expect to see in an upper-class residential neighborhood. The sun is setting and the stars are beginning to come out overhead, and so long as you don't look back at where you've come from, it's easy to convince yourself you've already escaped the inferno.

Then you crest the slope, and reach the wrought-iron gate where the road widens into a broad cobblestone walkway. Pushing it open, you find it unlocked, smooth, and silent. Unlike everything else in this city, this gate has been maintained perfectly.

In front of you is the source of the mysterious light radiating into the sky: a white church, neither too large nor too small, but giving the impression of a pure monument to its cause. As you cross the threshold of the gate, you can feel the aura of the church wash over you. This is, undoubtedly, a place of power, although you still have no idea what kind it might be. Almost in a trance, you walk towards the radiant building, not hesitating to enter. Matsuda and Ogawara follow along in the same dazed state.

Inside, the church is immaculately clean, well-furnished, and beautifully decorated. It is also, however, cold, empty, and blindingly bright.
No priest stands to welcome you in, no ambush is sprung, nothing moves at all. There is nothing here but the pure, cold power radiating from the thing sitting on the lectern.

As you approach the radiant object, your eyes gradually adjust, and you make out an enormous, ornate silver goblet. It's as tall as your torso, and the bowl is large enough that you could easily fit your head inside. Every inch of it is richly engraved with filigree, natural forms, and scenes from the gospels.

Although it appeared that the light emanated from the goblet itself, you can now see that it is filling the bowl and pouring over, constantly flowing from the great cup. Before you can examine the strange thing any further, however, you're jerked forward by a burst of force. The change in your pocket is being pulled towards the goblet!

You hurriedly pull the change out of your pocket to keep the force from tearing your pants, and just barely manage to hold onto the coins, keeping them from flying out of your grip and into the goblet. You suddenly realize, holding them in front of your face for the first time since arriving here, that the coins aren't Japanese. They aren't any kind of coin you recognize, in fact.
On one side is the face of a man in profile, while the other shows a seated woman in a robe. Around the rim, they read TIBERIVS CAESAR DIVI AVGVSTI FILIVS AVGVSTVS, but though you recognize the Latin letters, you can't read what they mean.
Of the five coins, two are larger, and gold, while three are smaller silver coins.
You don't have much more time to look at them, though, as the force from the goblet intensifies. It feels like it'll yank your arm from its socket pretty soon! Unable keep the coins from the goblet, you give in and...

Alright gentlemen, I left this up all night to get as many votes as possible, and it looks like
>[X] All five coins end up in the goblet.

This is a pretty major deciding point for the story, so I need you to do two things for me.
First, roll a d10. This isn't best of 3, I want as many people as possible to roll.
Second, what subject has become most significant in Rushorou's mind during his time in the burning city so far? What's driving him on, and what's been seizing his interest?

>[ ] 'There's been no moment more perfect than when seeing that skeleton twitch and die under Matsuda's boot, struggling helplessly. I can only imagine how lovely it'd be to inflict the same kind of despair on something living. It's cruelty that I've been lacking in my life so far, and cruelty is what I'll seek after from now on!' [Sadism]

>[ ] 'The feeling of leading these two, of having them rely on me, wagering their lives on my good ideas, is far more potent than whatever tiny thrill I got out of being the student council president. Context matters for me, and QM is asking about what being put through the grind of this thread will make the MC think. Feeling superior having dealt with everything is one way I though it could go, but feeling compelled to use your abilities in the name of the people around you is a better way IMO.
>>
>>3325384
So, a 10 for Pride and a 9 (mine) for Duty. We're probably getting a king.
>>
So, in the big download about Rushorou's personality, QM said he was only acting as the StuCo president because his dad said it was a path to success.
Why is he suddenly discovering his passion for the job now that he's in another city, with students who aren't even from the same school?

>>3325396
If his passion was being better than other people, it would have awakened long before due to academic and social superiority. He's also never felt particularly good about causing his mother to suffer. If he liked watching people suffer, he'd have just watched Matsuda get killed with his friends and smile. The bone boys don't even cry, it's hard to get sadistic thrills out of something that doesn't react. Awakening to either of those now doesn't make sense.

On the other hand, the stakes are much higher and his responsibility is much greater now that the situation is life-threatening. He's serving his purpose in a situation where it can make a big difference, which isn't something he's had before.
>>
Now the question is, would y'all keep the same votes if I told you you were getting a servant with the opposite personality as yourself?
>>

One of the concepts I was thinking of for a Fate quest was a Fate fan waking up in the body of Shinji just after the fourth war ends.

>>
>>3325630

>>3325629
Yep. I'm the ID-swapper, btw. Phoneposting rn so I predicted it this time.

>>3325630
That'd be pretty cool, actually. You could basically win the war before it even starts if you treat Sakura right, befriend Shirou and give him your sister as a waifu, then use those two to help you get chummy with Tohsaka. Between Rider, Saber, and Archer together, you could handle anyone, probably even Berserker. And since you know not to trust Kirei, it'd be hard for him to surprise you.
Hell, take it a step further and try to convince Kerry to give Shirou Time Alter magic.
>>
>>3325627
This is Shinji but less dickish.

>>
>>3325642
I thought they were an aspect of magical biology; this is why they're hereditary, and why Zouken's parasite fuckery drains the magical potential of his descendants.

>>3325645
Kiritsugu is too weak from the curse to demonstrate serious magecraft like that by the time Shirou is old enough to learn it.

>>3325647
Look, I'm writing the fluff and you guys are making the decisions. If I say the character isn't going to be Shinji, and you don't want him to be Shinji, he's not going to be Shinji.
>>
Also, if you only cared about self preservation you'd run the risk of turning into a different Shinji.
>>
>>3325645
I mean, your options aren't even limited to just befriending everyone in Fuyuki.
Iirc during Zero Shinji is out of the country (probably in England) for his protection.
You could probably even track down Waver when he returns and give him the run down on the fifth war.
Of course you'd be like 7 so you'd have an exceptionally "fun" time doing so.
You could also warn Bazett about Kirei too.
>>
>>3325659
If you come into the body after the fourth war ends, you'd be heading home.
The Matou family is originally Russian. If Shinji's out of the country, wouldn't Russia be a more obvious place to send him?
How would you track down those people? I don't think I could get in touch with Bazett if I went there as an adult, let alone a 7-year-old with no magic talent.
>>
>>3325653
Apparently the circuits on the body are just an expression of the soul or something.
Lets be honest most nasuverse magic makes 0 sense (it works like this except when it doesn't)
Though they might be able to create an overpowered reality marble because of thejr unique outlook on "reality".

Depends on how much mercy the players are shown early game by the QM.
Giving them circuits and the means to cast basic hypnosis could allow them to manage something.

The idea would be to buy Shirou (and, by extension, Saber) by using Sakura as a bargaining chip, but now that I you mention it, it would be easy enough to just keep Sakura for yourself and become Shirou's best friend, in which case he wouldn't use Saber against you anyway. And even if he did, Sakura-powered Rider might be strong enough to take down Shirou-powered Saber. Thank you for curing my stage 3 shit taste before it became terminal.

Despite the intensifying force, you remain determined to hang on to all the coins. They were the only thing you'd woken up with in this bizarre world, and you'd be damned if you were going to let some cup take them from you!
What you couldn't keep in place, however, was your body. Pulled along by the power drawing the coins into the goblet, you stumbled towards it until finally, your outstretched hand was sucked into the bowl, coins and all.

The next senstation you registered was one of white-hot pain, burning into your hand. At first it was only on the surface, forming a strange pattern on the back of your hand; then it went deeper, shooting into your veins, up your arm, and through the rest of your body. Molten lead was replacing your blood, flowing in from the horrible cup and suffusing every aspect of your form with the atrocious burning. You struggled wildly, attempting to draw your hand out of the goblet of light, but no movement answers. No matter how you pull, flail, and writhe, your arm is held fast.

Finally, the pain is too much, and you fall into unconsciousness.

As cognition and vision fade, you find yourself once again in the place of whirling, coruscating light. This time, however, there is a circle of perfect darkness at the point the light flows towards. Time passes, and gradually letters etched in white light arise within the darkness. They're in some foreign alphabet you don't recognize, blocky and squared off.
Fortunately it seems you don't need to be able to read the message. Its meaning appears directly in your mind, as if broadcast on some telepathic radio.

"Two coins of spirit have been changed, their power immutable. No choice is offered to one such as you in this matter."
"Three coins of aid have been changed, of mutable power. Direct its course, donor."

Suddenly you find that your tongue and voice can be used here, unlike the last time. Instead of speaking freely, however, the outer voice guides you to three answers.

>[ ] I accept the immutability of spirit, and direct the aid without

As far as I'm concerned you're both eating shit.

Mobile games are designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

What do you suppose the 3 options do, then?
>>
>>3326115
I'd guess the first juices the servant, the second juices us, and the third fucking kills us.
>>
>>3326115
Hopefully not the lamest most money grabbing concept FGO introduced.
Besides we wouldn't be able to be a Pseudo-servant because we'd just lose control of ourselves and get taken over.
(which also makes no sense, does Chaldea keep a stock of Rin on hand to be possessed? Does she exist in the throne of heroes???)
Demi-servant maybe but Demi-servants are stupid difficult to make work without magic shit turning you into a vegetable.
>>
>>3326135
You're forgetting that Waver/Zhuge is also a pseudo-servant, and the human personality is running him. It can obviously go either way.
>>
>>3326113
Hey, it's decent for something I spend an hour on once every two months when I remember it's downloaded.

Also if I were to run that Fate quest I'd have Tsukihime occur in the same universe as FSN because fuck your AU stupidity, Nasu.

I'm sure there's a totally average story hidden behind the same grindy garbage "gameplay" for every 4 sentences but I'm not gonna go for it.
>>
>>3326160
A. The story is written by Nasu
B. The story is canon to the Fate franchise.

If you're not following the FGO storyline, you're missing out on a major part of the Fate setting. I suppose you also ignored Fate Extra, Extella, and Apocrypha?
>>
>>3326141
Waver is also a third-generation magus who is educated as such and already survived a holy grail war.
We're a Kaichou with good grades. It'd be more reasonable to ask whether or not Issei's personality would survive as a psuedo-servant than to point to Waver and decide we can do whatever he does.
>>
>>3326167
>the story is canon
Pfffthahahahahaha
This is the same series where canon is totally meaningless because every single series is in it's own fucking isolated bubble.
And Nasu hasn't written anything worthwhile since Extra.
Happy Nasu is shit at writjng.
Oh and speaking of Extra you'd know that the Moon Cell physically cannot exist in universes with Type-Moon in wouldn't you?
>>
>>3326168
That's a fair point. No reason to change my vote, since I'm in the vast minority anyway, but you're probably right.
>>
>>3326175
Have you ever heard of the notion of a canonical multiverse?
Multiple alternate timelines are all canon to the setting. Hence moon cell.
>>
>>3326182
Except multiverses are fucking retarded and have no point in existing outside of being useful for rehashing characters or for conveniently retconning anything you want.
I highly doubt Zelretch is ever going to do anything remotely elevant at this point so a multiverse is totally pointless.
>>
>>3326188
Anyway lets stop, we've hurt this thread with a pointless argument enough.
We're not going to agree.
So let's just stop alright?
You enjoy FGO and I do not.
>>
Hey hey, I'm home and there's another shitstorm! Cool!

Glad you decided to stop debating the point, green anon. As far as FGO rules impacting this quest go, pseudo-servants will work if I decide to put them in. If I don't, they won't! So that resolves that dispute.

>>3326019
Thanks! If I have a player who's not already a Fate fan, I guess that means this quest is decent enough to stand on its own!

WRITING...

Before I can do the next update, I do need you to give me another vote. As you all surmised, this is the Servant-summoning moment.
Now, I numbered the servant classes available to you from 1-5 (You can't summon Saber or Assassin for plot reasons ) and had you roll d10 for that purpose.

[1 or 6] Lancer
[2 or 7] Archer
[3 or 8] Rider
[4 or 9] Caster
[5] Berserker
[10] Wild

If you didn't roll any 10s, you'd get the number rolled most frequently. If you did roll at least one 10, you'd get to pick from the numbers rolled. If 10 was the most common, you'd get to pick from the five. Now, you rolled 3, 5, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. So tell me, players, who do you want to be your champion?

Oh right, also Caster gives us the highest survival chance because they tend to be able to either buff/heal their master or just keep an eye on the situation unlike most classes, which tend to just run in like idiots with deadly sticks.
Archer also has a high chance of survival because you can go ranged but that's not an option here.
Oh and servants also shiv you in the back in the case of assassin.

>>
>>3326408
>Lancer
As useful as Casters can be, they're at their best when they can set up in a location and act defensively.

Rider tends to be a pretty iffy pick since their strength often relies on the strength of their mount and how well they're able to use it due to the terrain.

Berserkers are just too damn dangerous for a novice mage to handle.

Lancers are pretty well balanced, their weapons are cool, and they tend to be pretty swell dudes.
>>
I will warn you folks. Lancer isn't going to be a waifu.
I know that's a big concern among Fate fans.

I'm not expecting a waifu, I'm expecting a lancer. Lancer (or at least, some lancer) is the one who wrecked our shit last time we saw him, and he had Saber on the ropes.

>>3326458
While that's true, it only really holds while we're on our caster's turf. Having a servant that's effective regardless of location will afford us a lot more mobility.

>The spear is cheating
Next you’ll say we can’t use guns, ya steel-swinging ape
>>
>>3326408
>Berserker
Eh, already had a caster
>>
>>3326541
I mean we can use guns if we want to be prioritised by Magi in the war as a dangerous cheating asshat.
Also guns won't work on servants and unless you can find some ridiculously high caliber rounds and some of Kiritsugu's ribs they won't work too well on Magi either.
Caster however can shoot magic which is super cheaty.
>>
>>3326532
I'd say Caster's reliance on magic isn't so much "cheaty" as it is a liability. 3 of the 6 classes we'll be up against have innate magic resistance simply due to class nature. Caster will be basically useless against Saber simply by virtue of it being a Saber servant unless Caster's Noble Phantasm is cheaty as fuck like Rule Breaker is.
>>
>>3326582
I mean, the benefit of Caster is that while Servants may have magic resistance.
Masters have effectively none, can use this to set up deadly as fuck traps or just mind control Masters into commanding their servant to kill themselves.
Also Casters can game the system if they feel like it and do shit like steal command seals from slain/incapd masters.
There's a reason for the magic resist.
Caster needed balancing.

>>
>>3326626
I mean, if you want to see just how deadly a spellcaster can be in a war look at how much Zouken ruined everything with worms.
Powerwise all Caster's make him look like nothing.
They just don't tend to be fantastic at strategy because they are magical and the answer is usually "magic".
>>
>>3326626
But traps and mind control only work on shitty mages. Yeah, we'd wipe the floor with Shirou or whoever, but a trained mage can't have their minds dicked on in the way that Shirou's can, there's no guarantee that our traps would work, and we don't know who or what all the other masters are yet. The odds of us not having to deal with any proper mages are very low.
>>
>>3326667
>>3326671
The best argument I can think of in favor of taking Caster is that it would prevent Caster's shenanigans from being used against us. It's a good one, don't get me wrong, but I'm going to need more convincing. Caster could also theoretically teach us how to use magic if I'm right about the magic circuit, which is also worth considering, but overall Lancer would probably be a more capable servant and there's no guarantee our magic would reach any useful level.

Ah, sorry. I was previously for Caster, at >>3326458

>>3326680
Another benefit of Caster is that they aren't as stuck relying on their master for energy as other servants are.
Unless we want to feed our servant souls from people, which the majority of heroic spirits would be against.
This will be a benefit as we have no idea how many magic circuits we'll have.
Don't want to get in a Shirou situation with a nerfed servant that can't use their NP for fear of death.
They also tend to be able to buff their Master to unreasonable degrees so they can't be crushed effortlessly.
Also should we take severe damage a Caster is our best bet of healing because we don't have an EX rank Noble Phantasm shoved up our ass like Shirou.
>>
>>3326707
What about the "coins of aid"? You don't think those might help us out?
>>
Lancer is currently in the lead. Caster needs two more votes to pull ahead. Berserker is trailing, they'll need three votes to get the lead. Rider is... not gonna happen.
>>
>>3326707
All good points. The energy one is really what drives it home, since if Caster can get some juice from a leyline or whatever we'll be much better off than we would be otherwise.
I'm also curious about how fighting a grail war on the defensive would go. Playing the long con might be fun.

>>3326666
I change my vote to Caster. Also checked.
>>
>>3326710
We fed all the coins to a cup.
They might be used to buff our servants stats, probably.
Still doesn't solve NP energy requirement problem
>>
>>3326722
...why did you vote to "direct power within" if you didn't think it would buff us?
>>
>>3326722

I guess Servants sort of get a free pass because their viewpoint is fucked anyway.

"I accept the immutability of spirit, and direct the aid within."

As soon as the words leave your lips, you feel a sense of power flowing from the abyss into you. Then it all begins to fade, the colors dissolving as you're sucked into the darkness...

"Kaichou! Kaichou, are you alright?"

You open your eyes gradually, the pain setting in as soon as you return to consciousness. Much like your last awakening, you feel like a rag that's been soaked in boiling water and wrung out with vigor.

"Kaichou! You're awake, good. Must be fine, then, come on!"

Before you can process the situation, Matsuda's got you slung over his shoulder like a sack of flour, and he's running out of the church. As you try to look around through bleary eyes, you realize that the church is aflame. It looks like it could collapse at any minute, in fact.
Then Matsuda's out the doors and standing in the courtyard, and you realize that it's not just that the church has caught fire. The light and clarity of its surroundings are all gone. The pristine stones of the entryway are now cracked and choked with dead weeds, and the trees all around have mostly become torches. Evidently whatever protected this place is disappeared while you were out.

Matsuda stands you up again, and you steady yourself, taking stock of your condition. After the initial shock of your returning senses on awakening, you realize that you feel much better than you did before. Your body feels... lighter, somehow, and when you move your limbs it's faster. It's almost like you've done years of physical training, all at once. Your mind is clear, too, and you feel none of the usual mental haze one experiences right after awakening. Even your eyes seem to pick up more detail, penetrating shadows with a clarity they've never been able to before. You go to examine your glasses, see if they've changed, and realize that they have no effect. Through the lenses or around them, you see the world exactly the same.

Before you can examine yourself further, though, Matsuda's got you by the shoulders.

"Good to see you're alright, Kaichou, but we can't just stand around here. Whatever was keepin' the fire back, in disappeared when you stuck your hand in that cup. Me 'n' Squirt were only waiting for you ta get back up again to clear out. We gotta head for someplace safer, this whole forest's burnin' up. Maybe that house we ate at?"

As if to punctuate Matsuda's urging, you hear a massive, rumbling crash, and discover that the church has collapsed entirely. The ornate stone building has been reduced by the pressure of flame and heat to a heap of disordered stone.

This is no time to ponder a course of action. Matsuda's got it right, and even someone of your high station can see when to take the advice of a subordinate. You turn toward the road and nearly slam into Ogawara, who was apparently standing just behind you. He shies away nervously, and the three of you set out to descend the hill.

The three of you make it down the hill more or less unmolested. A few trees fall to block your path, but it's nothing major. Fleeing the conflagration, you decide to return to your makeshift base, the house where you shared dinner with Matsuda and Ogawara. If nothing else, you can at least take advantage of the beds to get some proper rest and process what happened at the church.

Unfortunately, fate has other plans for the three of you. As you reach the base of the hill, where the church road returns to the general suburban grid, you discover a large group of skeletons waiting for you. This isn't one of the small patrols you've seen before, there are fifteen of the things in the front row and more behind.

Frankly, you aren't confident this is a fight you can win, even now. You feel much faster and stronger than before, and the increase in your abilities became obvious during the descent, but even so, there are 3 of you and at least 30 skeletons. You're not sure Ogawara can even fight...

Your back is to the wall, though. The road behind you is getting more full of burning fallen wood all the time, and the only way forward is through the skeletons. You resolve yourself to fight the things. Even if you die here, you know you'll be proving yourself a hero.

Just then, the foremost skeleton collapses, its legs shredded by a shadowy mass you can't make out. There are more of the shadows, dartiing between the skeletons and destroying their legs, almost too fast for the monstrosities to react. When the surviving skeletons finally do start attacking their beastly foes, you observe that they're much too slow. The shadows weave out of the way of the skeletons' blows with consummate ease, and before long the whole troop of macabre soldiers is reduced to crawling bones.

With the skeletons out of the way, you can see that they were destroyed by six large, black wolves, which now sit at attention amidst the pile. The beasts seem only half-there when you look hard at them, as if they've been shaped out of the night's shadows. You don't have time to admire them for long, however. A whistle sounds from just behind you, and the wolves scatter into the darkness of the surrounding homes and gardens.

Nervous, now, you turn to see the person who commanded the fearsome creatures.
>>
You see... a hooded girl?
Standing before the three of you is a young woman, wrapped in a white hooded robe adorned with antiquated gold ornaments of some European design, and a few inches shorter than you. She seems to be wearing leather sandals, but her robe prevents you from seeing much more about her.

She addresses the three of you in a high, cheerful voice.

"Fufufu, look at you three helpless boys! If it hadn't been for me, I bet those low-grade familiars down there would have just minced you up! Well, now that you're safe, tell me. Which one of you is the Master I've been summoned for? I bet it's you, isn't it, in the middle. You look used to ordering people around."

She giggles again as she points a lily-white finger at you, and you find you can't keep your mouth shut. You say...

>[ ] "Master? Yes, of course, I'm sure you're right."

>[ ] "Your... Master? I don't have a clue what you're talking about, miss."

Too little information at the time, but at surface level, the design on the clothes and the sandals suggest something ancient and/or the more southern regions of Europe, like Greece or Italy. The wolves are a bit hard to place, though.

Wolves are very hard to place.
Maybe a humanized version of the She-Wolf of Romulus and Remus fame?
But why would they be Caster?
Too much of a stretch and I can't think of any more Roman wolf myths.
Hmmm.
Guess we'll find out.

"Oh, I've been stabbed, alas!"
And please don't operate under the impression Kayneth wasn't a magecraft genius in his own right.
Kirei had special Church admin powers and training.
We don't even know what circuits are right now, so we'd have to ask Caster to help if we wanted to attempt something so retarded.
Stop whining.

Look, I'm going to tell you guys now that you've got a Servant. The Lancer in this war is a huge dickhead. You don't want to be his friend.

You may have a point there.
However, Finn was also known for betraying a friend: Diarmuid.

Basically Lu Bu is effectively chinese Hercules if Hercules couldn't stop betraying and murdering his commander.

Hector?
>>

Maybe Perseus?
>>
>>3327271
Hector did literally nothing wrong. He just wanted to defend his city.

Now Achilles? That right there is the biggest spear-wielding asshole I can think of. The entirety of the Iliad is just him being mad and ruining everything for everyone else.
>>
>>3327271
Hector was a little dickish, but you can't blame him for doing what he could. He had a strong spear arm to use against a guy who was invulnerable to damage everywhere except his heel, could run at incredible speeds, was trained by Chiron and had a technique to make a fake Reality Marble.

At last, someone recognizes your proper station. It was gratifying when Matsuda immediately noticed you were an authority figure, of course, but being addressed as "Master" on sight blows that right out of the water. You have the feeling you'll be able to get along with this girl.

"Master?" you reply, pridefully laying a hand on your chest, "Yes, of course. I'm sure you're right about that."

As you're speaking, though, you notice that the girl isn't meeting your eyes. She's zeroed in on your right hand instead, now that you've brought it into view, and walks up to you to get a better look as she replies.

"Of course I'm right! My command spells are right there on your hand, dummy!"

Indeed, to your surprise, there's what looks like a bright red tattoo of three wings on the back of your hand.

"Anyway," she continues, turning to look up into your eyes, "what's this 'I'm sure you're right,' business? I understand you didn't summon me yourself, since you weren't there, but you must have at least ordered some servant to do it, right? Wait, hang on a moment," iridescent eyes widen and pink rose-petal lips purse into an 'O' of surprise as she comes to a realization, "don't tell me," she raises her hand to cover her mouth as she giggles again, "you didn't have a Servant summoned for you without even knowing, did you?"

Seeing the obvious confirmation in your expression, the girl can't suppress her laughter any longer, almost doubling over in fluting mirth. You can't help but reflect, as she openly laughs at you, that her personality is a sharp contrast to the musical beauty of her voice.

How do you take this mockery?

>[ ] This is ridiculous. No matter how powerful she may be, your pride dictates that you spend no more time than you have to with this harpy. Take Matsuda and Ogawara back to the house you spent the night in earlier, and try to figure out how to get out of this city.

Although a righteous anger swells in your breast, you choke it down and address the strange girl with all the calm you can muster.

"Look, miss, I'll admit it. I don't know who you are, or how you were able to defeat those skeletons so easily. I'm also quite unsure of the significance of this mark on my hand; it seems to have appeared while I was unconscious. To be frank, I thought you called me Master in recognition of my naturally authoritative appearance."

As you explain the details of your situation, the mirth drains out of the girl. Hearing the full breadth of your ignorance, she begins taking things more seriously. She straightens up to look you in the eye, her hood sliding off in the process to reveal long strawberry-blonde hair and... elf ears? You blink a few times, but her ears remain sharply pointed, and protrude directly outward from the sides of her head.

"Alright, Master; and you are my Master, the command spells prove it. I understand your situation now. You wound up involved in all this without knowing a thing, and you don't have any kind of plan for the War. Oh, you poor thing. You probably don't even know what the War is. Do you at least have a Workshop around here where we can sit down and discuss matters? Before that, though, I should introduce myself. You may call me Caster."

At this point, Matsuda cuts in, turning to you and speaking quietly enough to stay private. "Hate ta say it, Kaichou, but I agree with the girl. Between the three o' us, we don't have a clue what's been happenin' here. Beside that, well... you just oughta get to a place where you can sit down, alright?"

As Matsuda is advising you of this, Ogawara tries to get in for a closer look at Caster's strange ears. He endeavors to ask permission, but his nervousness keeps him from expressing much more than a discomforting level of interest. Before he can get close enough to touch, Caster snaps her fingers and a shockwave knocks the unfortunate fellow to the pavement.

What do you say to Caster before leading the group back/as you're walking?

I'm not saying he's a puppy-kicker, just asking if there's room for him to become a good guy. At the moment Yumigawa's personality isn't exactly good, even if he's had no opportunity to show it. He's basically had no extreme emotions until now, and has developed a large ego.

I'm not salty about the end result, even if it looks like I'm ranting.
>>
She wants to know if you have a... what? A workshop? What about you suggests a mechanic to her?
Oh well, you've already resolved to take the diplomatic route; there's no point in continuing to overreact to every strange point of her behavior. You may as well explain your situation as best you can and lead you to the abandoned house you ate in earlier.

"I'll be frank with you, Caster; I couldn't have a 'workshop' in the area, even if I knew what you meant by that. The three of us aren't from around here, wherever 'here' is. We woke up in three different places around this city this morning with no idea how we got here, in fact. We do have an abandoned house we've broken into, if that will suffice."

Caster favors you with a strange look, mixing pity, contempt, and... affection? All she says, though, is, "Alright, then, Master. Lead on, and I'll hear your whole tale of woe when we arrive."

Fortunately the walk from the base of the hill to your makeshift home is a short one, since you picked it out just before climbing the hill. The walk does take some time, however, and none of your companions seems interested in making conversation. Ogawara is too busy staring gloomily into the distance and lamenting his inability to speak, while Matsuda seems satisfied to smoke his cigarette and wait for the situation to reach a conclusion. Caster just keeps giving you that odd, enigmatic smile.

Finally you arrive at the house, which remains unmolested by skeletons. As you go in, you can't help but wonder if there was some way Matsuda couldn't have gotten you in without kicking the door off the hinges. You didn't give it much thought in your earlier hungry state, but if you're going to be making a temporary home here, you could really use a functioning door.
Almost as if she's read your mind, Caster makes a pouting 'tut' upon seeing the door, and promptly begins reciting foreign words in a low voice. Her lips move with impossible, inhuman speed, and in an instant she recites a string of syllables that you can't help but feel should have taken much longer. At Caster's command, the broken door is suffused with pink light, and when it dissipates the door has been restored to a pristine condition.

"I see men remain brutish in any era," Caster says with a smile, turning back to you, "Even if it is only a temporary residence, as a leader you should have a bit more concern for the condition of your camp, Master. Fufufu... how do you think your men feel, having to stay somewhere with no door?"

The 'men' in question, Ogawara and Matsuda, avoid eye contact with the smug girl, but you can't deny feeling a bit of shame. It may be a minor detail, but she does have a point when it comes to the responsibilities of a leader.

Unusually embarrassed, you mutter "Thank you, Caster," and brush past her into the house.

(Continued)
>>
Once inside, Caster is quick to make herself at home. She effortlessly conjures flames in the fireplace, mitigating the evening chill that's set in; and then goes around the room setting up candles, pulled from some arcane storehouse, to light the place.
Once Caster's finished getting the living and dining rooms comfortably lit, you gesture to the dining room table, making to explain that you should sit down and discuss the situation. Before you can open your mouth to speak, however, Caster playfully lays a finger over your lips.

"Ah-ah-ah, Master," she says with a smile, "Don't go rushing things. A good meeting should always be held over a feast. You just sit down by the fire, and I'll go make us some dinner."

As Caster turns towards the kitchen, however, Ogawara blocks her path. "A-actually, Caster-san, th-the truth is, ah, that I cooked, er, cooked dinner earlier. W-we've already, ah, eaten."

Caster's face darkens into anger, the first you've seen since you met her, and she sends Ogawara stumbling backwards with a sharp poke to the chest. "Oh, of course you've eaten already! Honestly!"

After a few more moments of dainty pouting, Caster walks back to you and takes a seat, a friendly smile back on her elegant features. "Well now, Master, I'm sorry for stopping you before. Go ahead and explain your situation to me. Tell me the whole story."

And so, you do. From the moment you woke up in the parking garage to your experience in the church, only omitting the strange dreams you've had. You think about mentioning them, but feel almost compelled not to. After all, surely only the real events matter, right?

After hearing you out, Caster leans back with a sigh. She seems almost as confused as you are by the whole thing.

"Well, Master, I explain some things for you, but this situation is quite outside my expectations. You see, I'm a Heroic Spirit; a hero from the past, resurrected through potent magic as a Servant, and sustained by the magical energy of my Master, a magus; that'd be you. I've been summoned for the purpose of keeping you safe, from other Masters as well as Servants. This information was all provided for me by the ritual that summoned me, though; it's not as if I've been through all this before. I also have the 'information' that my Master would be the one who performed the summoning, and would be able to explain the rest of the situation. I suppose all I can do now is try to keep you safe."

This is a lot to process. Even with her limited understanding of the situation, Caster's been throwing out terms unfamiliar to you left and right, and you just aren't sure if you can process any more. None of the clocks work here, but it's definitely getting late at night; at some point while you were talking with Caster, Matsuda and Ogawara both found places to sleep.

Do you...

The most likely class to betray you is a non Hassan Assassin.
Caster betrayed her first master because he was a retard who thought he was cool as shit because he could blend dozens of children and get a tiny amount of mana from it whereas Caster can just make more without doing evil shit, this made her Master mad.
Basically as long as you treat your servant like either a human being or a very dangerous weapon that could instantly end you if you upset it you'll be ok.
>>
>>3327652
I can see that, I just have a problem with most caster class servants. I will admit that there are few casters I like. Funny enough I tend to like lancer or berserker servants more.
>>
>>3327652
Hell, it doesn't even apply to Hassans if you count the could've-been Hassan from Strange Fake, who hates Grail Wars because Assassins always lose and will kill you if you summon her before going off to blow up the Grail or something.
>>
>>3327660
QM confirmed that the Lancer of this war is an asshole.
Summoning a Berserker is basically just nerfing a servant in most cases.
Casters are usually nice-ish people unless you summon Gilles or attempt a betrayal.
>>
>>3327665
She hates the grail war because she sees it as an affront to God, not because Hassans always lose (nobody ever fucking wins)
But yeah she'll instantly try and kill you.
As will Jack.
And being Servants they'll likely succeed.
>>
>>3327671
True. But we fou d out he was an ass after the vote. Anyway the lancer and berserker class for some reason almost always catch my interest, and casters just don't.

Berserker Jack isn't Jack, he's the embodiment of the question "who was Jack?" He represents Jack as the faceless murderer of a bunch of whores: his NPs let him transform into anyone who was accused of being Jack and summon a bunch of killers.

He can transform into Jack iirc.

>>
>>3328044

Anyway, good morning everyone. I think I have enough votes for this choice, so...

WRITING...
>>
Tired you may be, but you've got to get to the bottom of this situation before you can get some rest. Caster's explanation so far has been useful, but you need more.

"Alright, I understand you're supposed to be protecting me from the other Masters, but what about this 'War' you mentioned? Is that war what put this city in ruins? For that matter, when did it begin, and against whom? The last I remember, Japan was at peace."

Caster waves a finger in mock-admonishment, "Now now, you can't ask all that at once, Master. I won't be able to keep up!"
"Anyway," she continues, "the War isn't what you'd normally think of as a War. It's not between countries, and I don't know if it was responsible for the conditions here. I was just summoned, after all. All I know is that the various Masters and Servants are supposed to be battling each other; battling to the death, and this conflict is called the Holy Grail War. What caused it, or how the Holy Grail is involved, I don't know. There certainly wasn't any underground war between magi going on when I was alive."

"I... see." Your response is redolent with disappointment. Caster is your only link to the machinations of whatever brought you here, but she seems to have been summoned without much more information than you have. "Well, moving on. You said it's a war between Masters and Servants. These other Masters all have Servants? How does that work? Can you have a whole group of Servants fighting for one Master, or is it all set up in pairs?"

"Well, like I said, I'm not totally, completely, absolutely able to answer that since I don't know the other Masters," Caster replies, "but I do know how the Master-Servant system works from a magecraft perspective. We, Heroic Spirits of the past, are summoned and bound as familiars. We subsist off of the magical energy of our Masters; that's what keeps us manifesting here, powers our attacks, and facilitates anything we do. The instrument of that bond is the Command Spell, there on your hand. Each Command Spell is tied to a particular Servant, and Servants use so much energy that I don't think anyone but an extremely powerful magus would be able to have more than one. I could do it, of course, but the magi you've got today don't stand a chance. Fufun." On this last note, Caster puffs out her chest in pride. You ignore this smug display, moving on to the next important piece of information.
>>
"Alright then, tell me what you Servants can do? I've already seen you wipe out those skeletons, but is that the main focus of a Servant? Commanding animals?"

"No, silly!" Caster looks like she's going to start laughing again, but supresses it. "Servants are heroes from the distant past; myths and ancient history to the people of today. We're empowered by the legends that have built up around us, though, so we don't quite match who we were when alive in terms of our powers, necessarily. We generally have powers corresponding to what we achieved in the stories that made us great. I, for example, was renowned as a sorceress of unparalleled beauty and matchless magical power. So I can do all sorts of magecraft that would be impossible for your petty modern magi. It's a good thing you're an amateur, I suppose; a real magus would probably have a terrible inferiority complex around me."

Finished describing her own power, Caster begins tapping a dainty finger on the table, contemplating for a moment before continuing, "As for the other Servants, I can't tell you too much without knowing their identities. I can give you some general information, though. Servants are classified into one of seven categories based on their abilities. Saber, the swordsman, is the most well-rounded. Lots of popular heroes fall into this category, like King Arthur or Siegfried. Swords weren't so popular when I was alive, though, I wonder why they ended up so famous...
Second is Lancer, the spearman. Lancers tend to be faster than Sabers, and more agile. Also, they've got better range, as you'd expect from a longer weapon. You probably have the most to fear from Lancers. They're using history's greatest physical weapon, after all." Caster looks oddly proud as she praises the Lancers, and you can't help but wonder if she has some history with spears.
"Third, Archer. These are the ranged servants, bow users. Not much to say about them, if one of the other Servants closes distance an Archer will fold.
Fourth, Rider, the cavalry Servant. They don't match the first three classes in raw power, but make up for it with the strength of their mount.
Fifth, Caster. That's me! We're heroes who attained fame as magi. Afraid we don't have much in the strength department, though.
Sixth, Assassin. Assassins are stealthy and fast, as the name implies. They specialize in killing off the enemy Master without being noticed, but in a head-on fight will lose to most other Servants.
Seventh, Berserker, the mad warrior. Berserkers have the most raw power of all the classes, but they're difficult to control and can't think for themselves. They're perpetually under the effect of an enchantment known as Madness Enhancement, which keeps them from forming rational thought. A Berserker would be as likely to kill you as the enemy, if you couldn't chain him with magecraft."
>>
"Now," Caster goes on, "Your next question will probably be about my name, right? If Caster is just my class name, who was I really? Sorry, Master, but I'll have to deny that request. We Servants just have to keep our true names secret, you see. After all, they usually reveal our weakness, right? Suppose you'd summoned Achilles. He'd be invincible as long as he was unknown, but as soon as word of his name got out, everyone would be going after his heel! I might be able to tell you my true name later on, if we can find somewhere truly secure, but I'm afraid there's too much danger to discuss the matter more here."

"Alright," you respond, finally getting to the last point you've been wondering about. "I understand your concern regarding the name. Just one more question: how do I win this war?"

For a moment, Caster looks utterly gobsmacked. Then she lets out another peal of mirth. "Kyahahahahaha~! Oh, Master, how do you win? Survive, I suppose. Like I said, I don't know anything else about the War other than it's what you call the battle between magi with Servants. Keep living, and it seems that would be your victory!"

The disappointment you feel at this answer is immeasurable. Do you...

We should also probably ask her if she can somehow secure the building or something
Also we should probably offer her her own room to sleep in or something I know she doesn't actually need sleep OOC tho but IC we don't

You know, writing this has really made me realize just how much exposition is necessary in Fate. I mean, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and I still had to split it into three posts.

Pic related is my first (and only) guess for Caster's identity, Circe.

>>3328359
That's good to know, for us, but how does that help /ourguy/?
>>
>>3328359
I was thinking Circe actually.
Especially after she used what appeared to be High Speed Divine Words.
>>
>>3328369
What, you don't appreciate the intellectual challenge?
Not to mention that we can use the Isekai escape hatch as explained in https://desuarchive.org/tg/thread/64601574/#64607478 to send this information to Yumigawa.

I read that post, and I honestly don't see how it would help you, since I'm the one writing the setting.

Am I right about Circe, though?

Feel free to speculate, but if I said anything about the identity of a character who didn't reveal her true name in the quest, it'd bork the whole affair.
>>
>>3328403
Yeah that was a bizarre post.
If I ever do run the Shinji Isekai then exposition could humorously be skipped.
"Actually, I know more about this War than you do."
Also you'd be able to identify most/all servants on the spot even if the butterfly effect changes the summoned servants.
>EMIYA's face when Shinji of all fucking people knows who he is somehow.

It's all just too much. Today you've gone from waking up in a ruined parking garage to discussing a magic war with a witch in a house you broke into, and you just don't feel like you can handle any more thinking.

You stand up from the table with unnatural force, sleepiness having robbed you of ordinary grace.

"Caster, thank you for explaining all of this to me. Right now, though, I desperately need some rest. You mentioned being a sorceress; is there any kind of magical perimeter you can put up to keep the house from being overwhelmed by skeletons while we sleep?"

Caster is unflappable, looking as if she'd been expecting this exact question. "Of course! You didn't think I was just putting those candles up for light, did you? Setting up a barrier was the first thing I did after we arrived, and I have a few familiars on patrol outside. Don't worry, there's no way anything will be able to interrupt your sleep, Master."

"Wonderful, now I'm going to find a bed. Please feel free to find a room as well; I'm sure you're just as tired as I am."

As you get up and walk down the hall, passing the rooms occupied by Matsuda and Ogawara to find one of your own, Caster follows at your heels. It's a small hallway, of course. She wouldn't have any other way to find a room of her own. When you make a right turn into an empty bedroom, she continues to follow.

"Caster, I'm going to sleep in this room. Why are you following me?"

You can't see her smile, since you said this without turning, but you can hear the smirk in her response. "Why, to guard you, of course! Servants don't need sleep, and there are only three bedrooms in this house anyway. I'll watch over you while you rest! Fufufu~"

In response, you say...

>[ ] "Didn't you already say you'd set up wards? There's no need to watch over me in person, you know."

>[ ] "Even if Servants don't need rest, you must enjoy it, right? There were some couches in the living room, you could use one of those."

>[ ] "Even if Servants don't need rest, you must enjoy it, right? There were some couches in the living room. I'll use one of those, and you can enjoy this bed."

>[ ] "That sounds perfectly reasonable. Thank you for your diligence and loyalty, Caster."

I can't believe none of the guys who wanted to be Shirou 2.0 wrote in some variant on the classic anime protagonist "Don't call me Master, that makes me uncomfortable. You can just call me Rushorou."

Bizzaro world here.
>>3328427
>>3328432
I mean, you could attempt to go full meta and get Gray (from Case Files) to come to Fuyuki so you can give Saber Rhongomyniad as well as tell her about Avalon.
She'd just steamroll the war.

>>3328439
>[ ] "Even if Servants don't need rest, you must enjoy it, right? There were some couches in the living room, you could use one of those."
Baby steps.
>>
>>3328444
I mean, Yumigawa's not Shirou.
Yeah?
Also, baby steps.
>>3328494
Hell, we could go extra meta and talk about Angra Mainyu and Kotomine's dirty business, UBW, Shirou having Magic circuits already...
>>
>>3328512
There's a point to the bullshit you'd be able to get away with.
Like you could reveal that to Rin or Shirou or possibly even Waver but trying to tell any authority gets you fucked up.
Also telling Rin that Kirei killed her father usually ends with a dead Rin let's be honest.
She'd definitely try and kill him.

That's... that's... fine. It doesn't matter where she decides to spend the night, you need sleep right now.
"That sounds perfectly reasonable. Thank you for your diligence and loyalty, Caster."
Summoning the last of your eloquence, you commend her in order to keep it from being too obvious that you just don't care. Then you lie down on the bed, and you're out like a light. The last things you see, as consciousness fades, are Caster's iridescent eyes, shining in the darkness.

A woman awakens in a sumptuous house of gold and marble, all surfaces covered with ornamentation.

Stretching and yawning, she walks barefoot out to the garden, picking fruit from a well-kept orchard and filling a basket. The trees are heavy with bounty, and the sunlight lends opulent color to their foliage.

Then she returns inside, heads to the pantry and retrieves the other components of breakfast: bread and white cheese.

All around her follow animals; multicolored birds, great velvet panthers, and other, stranger beasts.

With breakfast assembled, the solitary woman sits at a gilded table overlooking the sea, choppy and deep blue. She eats first, and then simply sits there, until the fading of the day; mournfully watching the horizon, waiting for for some unseen sign.

When you awaken, it is to pulling hands. Fire is all around you, and Caster is frantically drawing you out of bed.
