This will be a capeshit quest in a world that has no known capeshit going on.

___________________________________________________________

The sun burning down causes flimmers of air dancing about the road as if you were looking through water. A phenomena you’re quite familiar with, but nonetheless it still fascinates you. Maybe it wouldn’t if your spirits weren’t already high. You hadn’t had to skip out on a bun for quite a while now so you had an unusually high amount of energy. Before you saved the money your father gave you to buy bread by skipping out on your share.

You have a small plastic bag hanging down from each of your scrawny arms. One was filled with the aforementioned bread, the other one held a book on language.
>spanish
>german
>french
>write-in
So far you had barely ever had a chance to hear the language spoken out loud, your dad wouldn't approve. This book, however, comes with two audio CDs you could listen to on your discman. You could read phonetics and know how the vowels ought to sound, but hearing it spoken in a pace you could control will be really advantageous.
Language is your only way of escape. The fantasy of escaping to a place further away than anyone could possibly imagine. A place where nobody knows you, where you could start again.

You snap out of your imagination when you pass the road sign telling passing cars where the lovely community you call your home branches off. It was anyones guess how well kept the trailer park was when looking at the overgrown sign and the barely visible junction.

A small sense of relief almost washes over you, but then you hear the ring of bicycle bells behind you. Immediately your insides clench together, soon followed by your hands. Nails cut into your palm as you make fists but you try to relax.

Even in a trailer park full of rednecks and social outcasts your dad was a loner and didn't want you fraternize with potential enemies, making you one of the prime targets of juvenile delinquency. Good old fashioned bullying.

>Ignore them
>Go off road and into the thicket
>Turn around to face them

keep in mind:
»You could hear at least two, probably three bells. You are outnumbered.
»You are physically weak, you couldn't properly fight anyone anyways.
»They are on bikes and very likely faster than you.
»You carry something your father would hate you to lose.
»You carry something you would hate to lose.

and the age old character creation question:
Are you a boy or a girl?
>Boy
>Girl
>>
Little bit alternate history, because capeshit is real, but nothing that wouldn't be treated like ufo conspiracies.
superhero comics and movies are a thing, but the protagonist has not had the opportunity to indulge in any such media, not really.
The protagonist is 16 and the year is around 2000, just so we don't have to worry about too much cameras and social media going on and have a more classic story, but who knows where we go with this?

Also, English isn't my native language, so you can correct me on everything. I'd actually prefer it so I can give you a better reading experience.
Unfortunately, I have a dynamic IP so I will lose my editing rights immediately, and I'll use different stuff to mark certain things

Even though each ring sets you on edge, you will just bear it for now. You thought about shortcutting through the thicket and run home, but that would only trigger their chase reflex, dogs that they are.

Their ringing didn't stop until they catch up with you. “Hey, Lanky.”

Thankfully, they only decided to slow down to a walking pace beside you and weren't actively blocking your path.

You've been in this situation often enough and know how to handle it. You can stall them for long enough until you're home. Don't escalate the situation for any reason. “Hey, Wayne.” You nod to him, even giving him a semblance of a smile.

Wayne was the de facto leader of his little assortment of morons. It's his pig-like face you see when you imagine Dudley Dursley. Oversized in every dimension, at least twice your weight. Only in height you two are equals.
You look over to Jacob and Oliver, neither of which you've ever seen alone to know how they would fare without having given orders. You're pretty sure if one would look deep into their eyes one could see the back of their skulls.

“Why, what kind of tone was that?” Oliver opens for Jacob to mimic your voice in an not entirely accurate manner, “Hey, Wayne.”
Wayne looks over to them shortly as they laugh to themselves before returning his attention to you. “You mockin' me?”

Can you salvage this?

You muster up some courage to shrug. “Not really,” you say and look at him from the side to see he was not entirely convinced he would use this as material to do something. “What are you guys doing today?”, you ask then. Maybe keeping him talking would be a good thing. Distract them long enough until you're home.

Wayne shrugs too. “Don't know. Haven't made up our minds yet. Just drivin' around, you know how it is.” You don't own a bike, and he knows it. “Maybe go to the arcade later.” You don't have that kind of money either. “You're coming, right?” And he puts you into a lose-lose situation. All you can really do is deny him.

What do you say?

You have to go with your go-to excuse. Your father. He holds some sort of authority over other people and has threatened to shoot them more than once to shoot them would they pass the fence he put up around the trailer. Of course, then you were in trouble for even being weak and getting bullied in the first place.

“Can't,” you start and lift up the bag with the pastries. “Bought dinner, and dad expects me back soon. I doubt he would approve of me spending money at an arcade either, you know?”

Facing Wayne again you see how the gears in his head are turning. Maybe he was thinking something akin to making you be late, but eventually he shakes his head and says, “whatever, Lanky.” One last jab by using that nickname and he nods his lackeys to follow him as he speeds up a little, and a weight falls off your heart.

Wayne didn't get far though as the car that was coming down the road gives off a single loud 'whoop' and comes to a halt besides the four of you. It's a police car.

What the fuck is police doing out here?

The windows get rolled down and a young officer in his early twenties greets you. “Hey, fellas.” Is he for real? “Could anyone tell me if you recognize this girl?”, he nods to the back seat, “I got the name of this place out of her but not much else?”

Please, let it not be that way.

Your eyes meet for but a second before your sister avoids to meet your gaze. An expression of terror on her face, an expression you almost take on as well. If police brings her home, she's dead.

What do you do?
>Don't talk to police, deny everything.

You were about to say you don't know her until you see Wayne's expression. His face was contorted into a cruel smile, one you know all too well. A hint of glee sparks when he sees your expression as well. All he had to do was smile into the police car, lift his hand into a small wave and say, “Hey, Cammy.”

“Of course we know her,” Leaning up again, he pats your back. His hand making contact with you like a speeding train and you stumble forward a little. “She's his sister. Isn't that right, buddy?”

You swallow hard before you nod. “Yeah, she's my sister...”

The officer looks at you and then back to Cam. “That's your brother, young girl?”, he asks in vain. Cam barely talks, she never did, not even with you. And at the moment she was completely paralyzed and didn't even move a muscle. Just like you, every fiber of her being was shouting at her how bad this was.

Your back was abused once more. You almost forgot Wayne was even there, so you stumble again but didn't fall. “Well, you got it from here on out. See you around.” And he drives off.

After getting no response from Cam the Officer turns to you again. “Your sister was caught shoplifting scratch cards.” Dear god, no. If it had at least been merchandise one could return. “I'm gonna have to talk to your parents.”

what do you do?
>deny her being your sister. No, wait, you already confirmed it, fuck.

What’s the worst that happens?
Your father is prone to get physical real quick. Your usual strategy was to avoid him or do whatever he says. He has beaten either of you before, and the worst offense is if, whatever it was you did, will cost him money.
The only reason he goes easy on you was to not have to pay a hospital fee. He goes even easier on Cam since she was a girl and only 11, but shee too had to get a cast after breaking his favourite mug.

I mean the worst that happens from attempting to keep the Cop from dad. Worst case if ends up the very way it would from the start, best we avoid it altogether.
>>
“Is that really necessary? It was just some scratch cards.” You try to give him the most convincing smile you can muster up. If you try it, you could succeed and have her get free, if you fail... well then the same thing happens that would if you don't try it either.

“I'm afraid it wasn't 'just some scratch cards', son.” the officer gives you a smile as if to apologize. “She was caught in the act this time and the shop owner claimed she stole from him previously. He claims it to be destruction of property and tries to get her for underage gambling too, but that won't stick. The issue is that she was very systematic when she grabbed the cards. It was planned, not an impulse grab. I really need to talk to your parents.”

You're not getting around this. No matter how bad you are at social interactions, even you can tell as much. “I understand”, you give in. Any excuse you could come up with wouldn't hold up on a double check, and you you fear of what might happen if dad finds out you dragged this out by lying to him and the police while not resolving anything. “Follow me.”

“Can't have you run in front of me while I'm in a car. Hop on in.”

You close your eyes and let your options flow through your head, but eventually settle on getting in. and leading him home. Blood was rushing through your ears and you could barely hear him while he tries to make conversation.

The car stops in front of your trailer and you get out. Officer Jackson opens the door for your sister as well, but she wouldn't step out of the car, a move you can understand very well, but it's not going to help her case.

You're aware of every step you take, and how the gravel was crunching underneath your feet. Your hand was shaking as it moves up to the door handle to open it up. The TV was running, a nature documentary was on, and your dad didn't turn around when you enter. “I heard a car.” He states in an accusatory way.

What will you do?

You wanted to protect Cam, of course, but you've never felt quite this level of powerlessness. “Police's outside...” you state in response, causing his head to turn to you. Unable to face him you move to the kitchen counter and put down the plastic bag with the bread inside.

“Say that again”, he demands after having put the TV on mute. “S͔̮â̭̘̺ͯy̠̆ t͝h̵̟͕̼ă͘t̞̬̐̈ ̸a̮ga̫͔i͎̐̕n͍.” The words resonate within your had and you had no option but comply.

“Police's outside.” “T̪͊͝el̫͔̗͂ͫ̔͠l ̠͔͂̓͛m͖̝ȩ͈̖̣ w͔̾hy̐̀̌.” This time you didn't lose a second to respond. “Cam got caught shoplifting.”

The chair scrapes over the floor as his form rises up in the corner of your eyes. Your eyes firmly nailed on a dirty plate in the sink, but well aware of what was happening around you. “Shoplifting?” His voice seems collected, but you can feel the entire room vibrating. He was about to explode. “Shoplifting?”, he repeats once more. You grab a sponge and start cleaning the plate. “You look at me, boy.”

Moisture is pressed out of the sponge as your hand clenches into a fist. You realize what you were doing and quickly drop the sponge to turn around. “Yes, sir.” You hold eye contact for a moment. The same green eyes you have are staring you down, twitching a little. But you hold your ground and don't show him any weakness this time. If you want to help Cam you need to be on his good side. So you concentrate hard on him.

“G͞o to̴ y͚̥̺o͝u͡r room and, ahh... listen to some music.”

You felt some connection to him. Like a mental link you couldn't put your finger on how you'd describe it, and suddenly his words seem like they don't carry any authority to them at all. It's the first time you've seen him so unsure, even slurring his words slightly.

He moves out the door to face the police officer and Cam while your eyes go back into the house. Your room was further in, so you wouldn't be able to eavesdrop on them. He didn't seem like he was paying you any mind anymore and you could easily follow him to the door.

You decide to follow him slightly, hiding behind the door and eavesdropping on their conversation. Whatever link you had earlier was gone, and the mere thought of something like that was ridiculous. Your dad was back to his usual confident self as he talks to the policeman. That was until something weird happened.

“I've͟ ̧álre̸ady̴ p͘a͠i͜d the̶ f͜ine͜.”
“I- I don't know.”
“Yoù rem͟eḿb͡eŕ me p̨ay̛ing.̛”
“Of course, Sir.”

What? He didn't take money with him when walking out.

“But I'm still not sure if I can release
“I'ḿ a͟ loving ̀f͜a̧t̨he̛r̸, you ͠have n̡o̡ r̛easo̕n to sųspe̡c̀t ̕me̶ of abu͟s͘ing my̡ ̛ch̀il̸dren.“
“No, of course not.”

Something was going on, you're sure of it. But actually putting it into words would make you seem crazy. Your dad could control people with his mind. Then why didn't you go back to your room? There was no such thing as mind control. Don't be stupid. You're just... interpreting something incorrectly. Then again, you have never really heard your dad talk without him knowing you were listening in. Maybe... No. Wait, didn't he make the Officer Jackson believe he already paid a fine?

You need to listen to their conversation further. Unfortunately there no other point comes up where your father says something creepy until the very end.

“Come to me, Cam.” Then there was a small pause, undoubtedly because she was not actually moving. This time you were prepared. “I said, com̧e t̷o͢ m̕e.” You remain calm. It's like you've finally peeked behind a curtain of a magical act. A curtain you didn't even know was there previously.

The police car's door gots snapped shut and you hear the gravel crunch under two sets of feet.

No, no, no. You retreat back to the kitchen sink. What do you do now?

He told you to go to your room and listen to music. Does he know it doesn't work if one is just eavesdropping? Then again it didn't work on you when he specifically told you to go to your room- You should go to yourr room to keep up that appearance.

You hurry to your and Cam's room and basically jump on your bed to get the discman, not even bothering to unknot the cables properly before putting the headphones on. No, you can't stay in your room. He's going to hurt her. Seriously this time. You can't just sit idly by and do nothing. Even though you don't know what you're going to do when you actually are outside. Fact is, he doesn't need mind control powers to keep either of you in check. But before a proper thought has formed in your mind you are already at the corner to the living room.

You felt disconnected from the world around you as you observe Cam getting slapped and falling down on all fours, tears streaming all over her face. All while your Dad was seemingly screaming his lungs out of how he provides for you, only asking of you to respect and obey him in return, and how he tried to be nice.

“But oh, no no no. You think I'm not doing enough for you. You need to be a fucking thief to get what you want? How spoiled can you get, thinking you're entitled for more when giving me nothing but grief!”

He moves to his jacket, taking out a hunting knife, only noticing you when he turns around again. “And you!” Here it comes. “What the fuck do you think you're doing?!” Concentrate. “I told you to
go ͂tŏ yͮŏu̓r ͊r̄oo̊m̄.”

You only take a single step backwards around the corner and out of his sight, an act he was seemingly content with as he returns his attention back to Cam. “And you little brat. This time I give you something to remember this lesson hereby,” He grabs her hand, making her lose balance and almost slamming to the floor. “Now every time you go to reach out with that filthy hand of yours you will remember not to disappoint your father. You̸ w̷ill r̢ęmemb̷er ev̀ery ţime ͟yo̴u réach̸ out ͞wit͟h yo͜ur ha̸nd.

Once again you peek across the corner. Cam's hand was slammed down on the table, fingers spread apart, while he put the knife down as if to cut down her pinky.

You grab one of the nearby empty bottles, and they clang together as you take a firm hold of it, even dropping one down on the floor.

He, of course, takes notice of it and turns around slowly while you're frozen in place. “There goes your element of surprise, son.” The grip he has on both Cam's hand and the knife tightens, and he looks to your makeshift weapon while showing off his own. “You think you can take me with that bottle of yours? Think being a hero will pay off for you?”

You had been prepared to deal with him trying to control your mind again, not with him trying to... talk. Your eyes go to Cam shortly, who is pleading with her eyes at you, before facing your father again.

It came almost easy to you to ignore the control he was trying to exert on you, the rage you feel from having failed to protect her disabled any notion of still following his orders. Next thing you know was that the bottle from your hand was flying in his direction but harmlessly shatters on the wall.

“I sȃ͊i̍̔̈dͤ͋ dón̢̈̃'̄̈́͐̀t̡ ͗m͟ỏve!”

But you don't care for his words and jump through the room to the only real weapon present. The shotgun. You know he keeps it loaded too, he never has it not loaded. But it was his downfall now. Not having expected you to go for it he wasn't close to you to try and grab it from you.

He only stares you down for a moment, estimating whether or not you had the guts to shoot him. And the hesitation you had was all it took for him to grab Cam again and put her protectively in front of him. But before you could even say anything Cam disappeared.

You pull the trigger and immediately get reminded of the recoil the shotgun has. And that you should wear ear protection. And never shoot in small rooms.

Your ears ring so bad you even have to close your eyes and take a moment to reorient yourself.

The first thing you see was your father who let himself fall back onto the chair and was now using it as a sort of partial cover.

The next thing, you don't see. Something you can't see hits you by your waist. You look down to try and make sense of it, because it felt like... a small person weakly trying to hug you. Your shirt and pants turn red with blood that was not your own, and the person it comes from turns visible again as she looses consciousness and slouches down.

Your father was shouting something you can't comprehend. He was bloodied, but from the way he was behaving, probably not lethally wounded.
>>

Not lethally wounded... You could change that. Without so much as a thought you aimed and pulled the trigger again.

You're shaking. You don't know how long you've spend staring at his messed up face. You just killed. Convulsing shortly you bend over and throw up all over the floor.

“Cam.” You wipe your mouth and crouch down to her. “Cam, please be still alive. Please be still alive.” Turning her around you see you've hit her left arm worst of all and her chest with some pellets that strayed further. Reflexively you grab her arm just under her armpit and press down, doing whatever you could to stop the blood from flowing down to the wound and out of her body.

Was that a main artery? You're pretty sure that's a main artery. That's nothing you could fix what little first aid you know. You look up to the phone. You've got to call 911, but you can't easily let go of Cam again, not with your hand cramped around her arm like that.

You try and lift her up as best as possible and move to the wall mounted phone. 9-1-1. Letting your ass fall on the floor again you position Cam laying on the floor by your side. Your right hand still occupied with clamping her arm shut. It may be your imagination, but you think she's loosing less blood now than before.

“-t's your emergency.”
“Yes? Hello? My sister... has been shot.”
“Calm down, Sir. Where are you right now?”

You tell the operator what he needs to know, saying it was an accident, obviously skipping out on the fact that you also shot your dad. You are told how properly keep her from loosing more blood while being assured that someone will be with you shortly.

While listening to the voice on the other hand you concentrate on Cam's wound when suddenly you felt the same type of link forming as with your dad earlier when you first immunized against his powers. But that 'link' it didn't form from her head to yours, but from her arm to yours.

At first you were unsure about it but when you try to pursue it you feel a sharp pain on you where her wound would be, and you immediately disconnect from her out of reflex. You almost stop pressing down on her as well, but manage to hold on. The pain in your arm subsided quite fast, but a small wet spot had formed.

What?
>>
sorry, not more today
>>
>>3363238
Is our power to be decided or is it predetermined? From what you've given us my guess is some kind of bodily manipulation.
>>
>>3363487
Our power is killing our sister and father, obviously.
>>
>>3363238
You're not sure what happened, but you have the feeling that it was something good. You've connected to her wound and you were the one hurt. So you concentrate again and focus on it again, this time more mentally prepared to be pained by it.

"Are you okay?", comes from the phone, the connection not yet having been severed here. However, you don't respond, you got to concentrate.

Watching the wound on Cam slowly grow smaller was definitely worth the pain you, yourself now feel. You are taking the wound from her. How the fuck does that make any sense? Probably the same amount as mind control and invisibility do.

"Sir?!", the man from the Hotline tries to get your attention again after you've just been groaning in pain for a... How long was it?

You look down to Cam, she's not bleeding anymore from what you can tell, but in exchange you were.

You lean back against the wall and grab your own arm in hope to be able to still that bleeding there, but find that again, the pain was subsiding. Does that mean you can take people's ails for yourself and then heal yourself? How fucking derived...

Emergency services will be here shortly and the only wound to show for was your fathers face.

What do? (time sensitive)
>Heal Cam completely, hand too.
>Go back on the phone and explain how you no longer need an ambulance...
>She's out of the woods, you need to save yourself and run... but how? [write-in] (time sensitive)

Ha, what a shitshow. Sure regret calling 911 now.

Can we drive a car?

I think the best course of action is to continue with the initial plan now.

Respond to the operator, wait for authorities to arrive. The initial statement that Cam has been shot can easily be explained off as shock if need be.
>>

>Heal Cam completely, hand too
I have no idea how we're going to avoid the authorities, or convince them not to arrest us, but I do know I don't want our little sister suffering a scar on her hand that'll trigger mind control induced trauma.

We can at least heal her before leaving her alone and an orphan.

"I'm still here", you tell the operator, "she still has a pulse and the bleeding gone down."
"Under no circumstances are you to let go of her arm, an ambulance will be with you shortly."
"Yes, of course..."

An ambulance... That sounds so stupid now that you know you have fucking healing powers, as shitty as they may be. Had you known that you wouldn't have called for one... or would you?

You killed your father. Or did you? You never checked his vitals... Looking over to him and his mangled face almost sends you throwing up again, so you quickly avert your gaze. Judging from the smell... besides your bile and all the blood, someone shat themselves. You've heard that's what corpses do, only it never being depicted in media lest it would take away from dramatic scenes. Is that all the confirmation you need?

Now that you're aware of it you can't unsmell the entire atmosphere. "I need to get out of here."

"yeah yeah", you shush the operator, "I'm not moving her nor let go of her, I'm not reckless just because of the smell... wait I hear sirens."

You open the door slightly and look out. A police car. If you're not mistaken Officer Jackson's car. the guy who was mind controlled to have no reason of suspecting your father of abuse.

As far as you know you had no wounds on you, the pain you took from Cam was healed already. She still had a hole in her hand though.

Remember dad mind controlled the guy to think nothing could have happened before this, so to him it would have to be the first time. We can bring up the history to a judge who didn't get mind whammied but for now best to stick with the hole in our sister's hand and the knife with his prints.

Can't we use our mind powers to undo or convince him that he was fooled by dad who turned out to be a lying shithead with the crime scene as proof(or convince him that it is)?

We still don't know if its fool mind control or just momentary suggestion, if he could alter perception we would not know that dad was an asshole, i think mentioning to the cop is worth it because our story would be the same from start to finish and if this was the first time they met he could just think that he didn't notice it

“Officer Jackson?”, you shout out. Your mind was racing with whatever it might take to- even think of what it is you're hoping for in the first place, much less what it'd take to get there.

“Yes, I was just with you earlier. You called for an ambulance due to an accidental shotgun wound?”, he half explains, half asks.

He was young, maybe still doing stuff by the book and being so overtly formal. Maybe you could use this to your advantage. But you don't know in how far he's still mindfucked.

“He... he finally snapped,” you press out while the officer was still outside. “He was about to cut off her finger. Just so she would... never do- I... I had to do something.”

Why is it that now of all times your emotions break. Tears start streaming and your speech gets slurred. Cam almost died because you shot her. Dad did die, you killed him. You killed another human being. And now you missed every chance to try and run.

“Calm down there. What is going on? May I come in?”

Unable to form a coherent answer you just nudge the door open further, letting him come inside. The scene was quite gruesome. And he immediately holds his hand before his mouth when entering. Blood, pile, a corpse with a mangled face and a crying teen with the unmoving figure of his sister laying beside him.

What can you say to defend yourself? What could you say if you'd even bring out a coherent sentence? What would happen now? You're not of age, but you still killed someone. Not just out of affect, ear witnesses could say they heard two separate shots a few seconds apart. They'd take Cam away from you now.

Your grip around her tightens and you pull her up to you, holding her as would it be the last time you could hold her.

Officer Jackson tries to talk to you more but he neither tries to remove Cam from you, nor does he put handcuffs on you. The closest he came to you was when he checked her vitals for himself. After that he went out to call it in further. From what you could hear he only says that your sister was wounded and your father dead, while you remain unresponsive to his questions, albeit it being due to your emotional state, not shock.

Soon after the ambulance arrives and you let yourself be lead out.

“You can let go of her now.”

"No", you bark back at the paramedic immediately.

Being a trained professional though, he responded calmly. "It's okay, we are here to help now. Yo called us for that, remember? I just need to take a look at your sister's wounds so I can properly treat them." He turns to Officer Jackson and stares him down for a moment. "You can still hold her other hand and ride with us in the ambulance."

As good of a deal as you could've hoped for. So you nod in agreement then and help put Cam on a stretcher.
After assuring them you were not hurt anywhere and she had her clothes cut off the second paramedic comments, "You called this in as a shotgun blast?"

"Yeah...", what do you say to that? You simply change the topic. "It is. But her hand also got stabbed."

"That's going to need a hand specialist...", one says more to the other than to you while they start doing their work.

You get the urge to heal Cam now, in front of them but don't know how that would fly.

"I tried to protect her, but then he stabbed her as if to teach /me/ a lesson."

"He stabbed her to teach you a lesson?", the paramedic repeats in slight disbelief, exchanging a look with the other one while your own gaze is fixated on Cam's hand while the wound is cleaned. You could have healed it. Probably better than what they can do for her. Reconnect sinews and nerves... No, you shouldn't get ahead of yourself, you don't know how any of this works.

Cam can turn invisible. That's not subtle. People will notice if the girl they are operating on disappears. For now you are lucky she is out of it, you wouldn't know how to explain it anything if it were to come up. Bad end is you getting separated because they think you're not mentally stable. Bad end 2 is living the rest of your life in a lab as a prisoner/test subject.

Even though you don’t yet properly understand it, you know you can save people with your gift. Keeping it to yourself would border malicious intent. It wouldn’t sit right with you to just try and not help people.

You watch the paramedics.

They are good people. Helping others without any superpowers. Just because they want to. It couldn’t be easy seeing people at the verge of life and death on a regular basis. But they do it because they want to... because they want to.

You don’t know what you want. You want to help people, yes. But ‘the people’ you want to help first and foremost were your sister and yourself. Maybe you could commercialize your talent? But how? What would Jesus do? Wait, Jesus healed people too. Has he had powers too? You almost chuckle at the thought of forming a cult with you as some sort of spirit healer. Maybe you’d get a nice harem?

What’s the fuck is wrong with you? You’re a fresh murderer and are sitting in an ambulance whit your sister unconscious.

“Here.”

“Whuh?”, you were startled by one of the paramedics as he hands you a bottle of water and box of crackers.

“You threw up earlier, didn’t you?”, he asks, “wash out your mouth, you can spit in that bucket, no problem, then eat something, ok?”

Your mouth opens slightly in surprise. Wordlessly you take the two items and stare at them for a moment, before the realization of the taste in your mouth makes you frown again. Quickly doing as he said you take a sip, and spit out the rest of the bile. But as opposed to drinking more or taking one of the crackers you look up to him again. Mouth slightly ajar, still.

This perfect stranger has seen an issue you’ve had before you did and solved it for you.

This perfectly small little act of kindness...

No, you’re not going to cry again. Stop it. Aww fuck it.

“They are just crackers.”

“Th-Thank you.”

“Hey, hey... it’s okay,“ he moves to pat your back, a gesture which made you flinch away slightly. “Sorry, I-” Just like before he trades looks with the other paramedic who tries to subtly shake his head, but the first one didn’t listen to him. “Not seen a lot of kindness in your life, have you?”

>Shake head. “No.”

“I’ve always had Cam”, you tell him with a faint smile, before looking to her unconscious form which washes your smile right away. You nibble slightly on one of the crackers before making eye contact with the more talkative paramedic again. “What's going to happen now?”

You're not quite sure where the question came from, nor why you'd pose it to him, but you felt comfortable with him. Probably because the other paramedic seems to rebuke him earlier for talking to you in a manner he probably shouldn't have.

Again they look at one another for a moment until the second just puts his attention back on Cam.

“Can't say I know what happened, but figuring you may need it... think about when it would be acceptable for a cop to shot someone?”

“Jesus, man. The kid has just...” he even raises a fist, but gets distracted by Cam moving. “Someone's waking up.

What do you do? She will have no idea where she is and doesn't yet know what happened.

You scoot closer to her as much as the situation allows. "Hey Cam," hopefully your presence was calming enough for her and she wouldn't panic.

Not that it looks like she would panic. At the moment she kind of lacks the energy to panic, or rather, she was too anemic to move much. But that didn't mean she could knock the transfusion out if she were to move too much.

"We're in an ambulance, these guys have been taking care of you for now, they are really nice."

She looks around, unsure of everything, not giving you much of a response. But that's usual behavior for her, always inquisitivly observing her surroundings first.

"Dad... we're far away from him now, don't worry", you wonder... "you and I, we'll be okay. We're alike, you understand? We'll be okay."

Cam frowns, a single small sentence escapes her quietly. "Dad'll be mad." And fear once again adorns her face as she makes herself small. Was it just your imagination or did she almost flicker out of existence again?

How do you proceed?

"Dad's not here, he can't hurt us anymore. I... won't allow it, okay? You're safe, and so am I, okay?"

You lay the crackers aside and move to try and hold her hand, which was heavily bandaged by now. If you heal her now she'll notice you have powers too. You don't think she noticed your hint earlier.

The first paramedic stops you and leans in close, "You shouldn't touch her hand, at least one sinew is cut and any movement could shift them out of reach, raising the difficulty of the operation."

"What is it?" Cam asks.
"Don't worry, you'll make a full recovery," you reassure her. You're confident about it too, as you concentrate on her again to try and heal her a bit.
"Recovery..?", she mouths after you and tries to lean up, but her strength wouldn't allow for it.

Your concentration gets broken as she convulses, and was quickly picked up so she could lean over the edge to a bucket of her own. You feel powerless as you watch her throw up. Even after her stomach was empty, her body goes through the motions.

Now more than ever you want to heal her. With your hand on her knee, the only place you dare to lay it on, you concentrate. There were more intricacies to that link-connection-thingy than you previously thought. When adrenaline was high earlier it came much more natural to you. Now it feels like you have to control every muscle individually just to take a step.

Also you've got to give the link-connection-thingy a proper name.

There was different tissues and strings of different strenghts... just the hardest you could probably guess is bone. the other stuff you don't know what it really is, so you only heal the bone for now... No, you want to do something severe enough that she'll notice.

writing
>>
Doesn't matter if she's numb. You don't want her hurt, so you sync with her body and feel for the damage. You care mostly about the sinews so she'd be able to still move first and foremost, but you don't know what in that pool it is. You can feel the things that are not right, and from what happened earlier you assume you can only fix it by offering the same parts up from your own body in exchange. Any damage you take yourself from it will get healed like nothing, but you don't know if that is a conscious effort or not. Previously it had been done somewhat automatically while your adrenaline was high so...

You should focus on healing her first before worrying about healing yourself afterwards. Something important, and something that the paramedics wouldn't see. The sinews are the most obvious choice, but you still have no idea how to recognize them from all the other stuff in a body. Nor do you even know what kind of sensory thing is going on to even feel for it. You sync with her body and get to feel what she does. Your Bio-Sync?

No, focus.

Sinews carry all the force a finger could exert, right? So of all the tissue it's ought to be one of the flexible, yet tense ones. Is there much cartilage in the hand? You don't know, but it's your best bet for now. After the transfer you desync with Cam again and try to move your fingers, but your middle and ring finger don't follow through.

Anger wells up inside of you again. The fucking asshole got her good. How could he have ever justified that action? Unconsciously your hand moves to form a fist again- or at least it tries to. Stay calm. Just heal yourself.

With your bio-sync not in effect you have no idea how you could- As you flexed your hand it just works properly again. What? It just healed itself without you doing something about it? It just took a few seconds. That's... Well, to be honest, nothing about this makes sense, so why should this part?

“What happened?”, Cam asks, ripping you from your own train of thought.

What do you tell her?

That was a pretty broad question. One part of you hopes she noticed you taking her damage, the other, a more rational part of you, reasons that she just asks about what happened after she passed out. Either way, this was not the place to talk about it

“Don't worry about it right now, Cam. I'll explain later. For the moment we're both safe, okay? Just you rest now.”

“No,” she tries to lean up again, but fails.

One of the paramedics softly puts his hand on her chest to keep her down. “You shouldn't rise right now. Here, let me swap with your brother, so you can see each other better.”

You swap around with him to be by Cam's head. “What do you mean 'No'?”

Again, you bite your lip. You have to tell her. She's still afraid of him. Hell, she even protects him and blames herself for it. You would do, but actively experiencing his mind control in action lifted any illusion. But she hasn't.

Who knows what things are still buried in her mind.

“He won't”, you tell her, before realizing that she wouldn't believe it. When has dad ever not been mad? “I mean, he was, but now...” You have to tell her. “Dad's dead, Cam.”

This gets her to look back at you for a moment. Then her eyes dart around as she seems to make sense of the information and what exactly happened after she passed out.

“Oh.”

That's all she said before just staring up ahead to the ceiling of the ambulance.

Considering everything, she's taking it better than- oh no, she's crying.

“Hey, shhh...”, you pat her healthy shoulder, “everything's going to be okay now. I'll make sure of it. You don't have to worry about a thing.”

She doesn't respond to you, and with both her hands out of commission, she couldn't even wipe her tears away. When you grab one of the tissues to help her, she turns her face away from you.

Ouch.

Just then you notice the ambulance slowing down and coming to a halt. You can only watch as she was then lifted out onto a bed and rolled off.

Part of you thinks it's obvious that you should follow her immediately, the other thinks she needs some space. At the same time you spot Officer Jackson having parked near the ambulance to make sure you don't go anywhere or something like that. He'll nods in your direction.

No, you have to go after her. Even if she needs some space, you have to be there for her. You rather try and get stopped than stay when you could have gone.

You move through the door after them before it falls shut, not knowing whether it can even be opened from the outside and follow after the bed they wheel her around in. She got an x-ray of both upper arm and hand, before being moved further.

Everybody seems to ignore you until you are met with a door where you are eventually stopped. “No family behind this point”, a nurse informs you, which you simply have to accept.

Now you were in a hospital hallway, standing around like an idiot, waiting for something to happen. But the only thing that does happen was Officer Jackson approaching you.

“How are you holding up?”, he asks.
“Pretty shitty to be honest”, you admit, not helping him in his efforts to close the distance between you. “Could go for more of those crackers from the ambulance.”

You look slightly down. “I don't have any money with me...”, and before he could follow up on it, “and-” We dơn'̨t ̕t̵àk̷e̛ han͢d-ou͝t̛s. You rub your temples. “I'll pay you back.”

“Okay,” the officer smiled and gestures you to follow him, “I'll take your word for it.”

He turns his back to you, trusting you to follow him, which you do. You can't help but wonder if this was his strategy to get through to you, or if he was just naive. But it end with the two of you sitting in the waiting room eating from the cheapest box of cookies the vending machine had to offer. Not because he was cheap, but because not wasting money was simply ingrained in you. That, and probably other things too.

“He was abusive,” you eventually begin. “always has been.” Why is this so hard? “The only reason, really, why we weren't in here more often was because he was cheap too.” You gesture around the hospital waiting room to emphasize before showing him your hand. “Broke my finger once because- I don't even remember. We didn't go to the hospital then, because- well, because of money, and because it was just a finger. See how that bone on my pinkie is slightly angled? Never grew back correctly cause it wasn't set properly... Of course, I could be lying and broke it for any number of reasons, and you have no reason to simply believe me like that.”

You gaze deep into the bottle of still mineral water. “Today... Didn't you wonder why Cam was so fucking afraid to go home? She was terrified.” You look back to him. “And so was I when you brought her. I thought that today's the day he'll kill her. And that was before we even met with him.”

There was a long pause, where you couldn't say anything. Only when the policemen urged you to “go on” could you continue.

“He took a knife,” you skip right to the good stuff, “he said she needs a reminder every time she'd reach out to grab something. He was about to cut off her finger, really... I... I grabbed a bottle, like, as a weapon. I don't know what I actually planned, but I couldn't allow him to hurt her anymore. Then- ahh... I- He got really angry at me for wanting to save her, so he stabbed her hand to teach /me/ a lesson. I threw the bottle and went for the shotgun he keeps loaded by the door. He took Cam as a human shield though... I messed up.” Here you go with the flood works again. “I was afraid. I really way... He was shouting at me... But it was a double barrel.”

“I can arrange someone bring some for you from your home. For both of you.”

“Thanks...”, you actually feel kinda disgusted by your current state of being.

We need to prepare for what's next. Also, I wonder if we can mental link with people other than dad. Maybe we can undo brainwashing?

Did dad MC Cam to hold still and get her fingers cut, then use her as a human shield?
Heck Cam probably had these powers but was forced to forget.

"What's going to happen now?", you ask him, watching him anxiously.

Now he too seems unsure, "I'm not an expert when it comes to dealings with minors, I'm afraid. There may be a trial. But not like in the movies. You'll have to talk to a psychologist. That's for sure. Your sister too, for that matter."

"My sister doesn't really talk", you tell him, "as you might have noticed when you arrested her. I don't know why, really. It's not that she's stupid, she just... barely strings together more than 4 words at a time."

"I see..." He stands up, "but this still has time. So let's arrange that shower for you, and then my colleagues will hopefully be here. People who actually have experience when it comes to dealings with minors."

You follow him again, "- still don't know what happens, not really."

"Ah... yes... There will be a trial, most likely. You'll be given a lawyer too, if you can't afford it." He turns slightly to you. "Nobody likes a child abuser, Everybody loves a hero who stands up for another. So if your story is true..."

"It is!"

He tries his hardest to not let his expression be readable, but you figure the most obvious thing.

"You don't believe me."

"It's not me you'll have to convince."

"Because you met him... and he didn't seem that bad... right?"

He sighs.

>"Just let me have my shower then."
Jackson is under the lingering effect of dad's spell. Lets try to win over people whom we will actually have to convince.

I mean, he exchanged a couple words with you andyou let my sister in his hands, you didn't even warn him or Cam, he was THAT good at makling people do what he wanted.
Look at my sister, she still thinks is her fault that he stabbed her, she thinks it's HER fault.

sigh...

I was actually hoping you would stay more time at our house, or at least take Cam with you....just to give it more time before he did something.

>"He was manipulating you, just like he does everyone else... " [explain how. write-in]
He's always been like that. Something about how he talked, or the tone of his voice...
You just want to believe what he says, or do what he tells you, and there's no room for debate. So
>"Just let me have my shower then."

I like it. I wonder if reason and guilt help disperse the effect. Lets try

Yeah, I can dig it.

Here's hoping he doesn't just shift the blame onto us instead.

Looks like reveal it is. Hopefully no powerful Villains are watching for this sort of thing...

there's something else you guys are not thinking of, but I don't know if I should be lenient or not.

Jackson is supposed to have a fine, isn't he? doesn't he remember getting it? shouldn't there be a receipt or something?
>>
>>3379504
holy shit yes, tell him our dad even convinced him to let him walk on a fine, telling him he already paid, ask about the receipt, he will see how crazy good at manipulating he is

“He was just manipulating you, just like he does with everyone else. I mean, he after only a couple words you gave Cam over to him, even if you knew that something was up. Who lives in a trailer and is just okay with their kids getting caught shoplifting? You knew something was up and you left us alone with him anyway. If anything it's-”

You had your hand raised to point at him, but change the gesture. Putting your fist up you bite down on your knuckles for a second, before the taste of blood – Cam's blood – makes itself noticeable on your lips. Disgusted you lower your hand and look away.

“He's just THAT good at making people do what he wants... wanted. He even got her to believe its her fault, and he had to mutilate her or something. She thinks it's HER fault.” You sigh. “Bunch of therapy that'll take...”

Then you had a sort of epiphany. Your face must have lightened up noticably enough for him to take a step back. “The fine. The- the fine he had to pay for Cam shoplifting, do you remember it?”

Officer Jackson almost takes a cautious step away from you. “Yes?”

“He never paid it. He just- did the thing he does, but he never actually paid it.”

“What are you saying?”

What are you saying?
>Tell him your dad has powers
>try to bio-sync into him and unlodge whatever's stuck in there (you have no idea what you're doing)
>try to not mention powers, or at least phrase it in a way you don't think its real either “he can... hypnotize people?”

>Our Dad is a Monster.... But he was not stupid, he had a way about him.... Kind of lile that Irish phrase.... Gift of the Gab? His voice could charm people.... His Body language was always set up to put people at ease.... I don't know how to put it into words properly even. Some people just have charisma.... A certain quality to them. If he was not such a mean son of a bitch and as short sighted... He probably could have been famous or done great things..... Please.... Check your records. See if he paid or not. Then it does not matter if you believe me or not. You can check for yourself....

“What I'm saying is that my Dad was a Monster, not a stupid one, though.” You try hard to think of a way to phrase it without saying that he could literally manipulate the mind. “He had a way about him, kinda like that Irish phrase 'Gift of the Gab', you know?” You somewhat mimic an accent to it as well, even a small smile was on your face, but it fades quickly when you continue. “His voice could charm people, his Body language- There was always something he knew, some insight into people which lets him put them at ease. But I guess today was the day I've built up my immunity. I was the one person who was able to rip off that fascade...”

The policeman looks at you blankly, you doubt he's following you entirely, but it wasn't completely necessary, so you just make your plea.

“Please, you surely are supposed to make some sort of record of that fine and whether it was paid or not. Or a wallet where money is supposed to be in- No, I eavesdropped on you with him, you didn't even name him a number. Try to remember. How could he have paid a fine without knowing the price tag?”

You were able to see his expression go through a few stages. First slight confusion about your ridiculous statement, then doubt, then mild shock, until he finally settles on anger as well. “Son of a-”, the last word was merely mouthed without a sound leaving him.

“Yeah,” you agree, “you try living with him without-” killing someone. You shouldn't have said that. “uhh...” -going insane? No that's not a good one either.

Without going...

okay thats absolutely meaningless
what's necessary for a novel doesn't make for an entertaining quest.
so I'm gonna skip a little ahead to the point where you can talk alone to Cam after she has talked to the police.

What do you want to say to her or ask her or whatever?>write-in
>>
>>3380576
Let's bring her something from the vending machine, and ask her how she is.
Ask her what she remembers
And then say that its just the two of us from now on.
Then we can show her our powers if she remembers her powers
>>
>>3380576
Eh, it's decently relevant.
Build a rapport with him and he'll be a great witness on the case.
>>
>>3380576
Asking her what she remembers and saying we are sorry are some things we need to do, and then showing her our powers when we are alone if she remembers her own powers
