The battles go by in quick succession as you return to the old rhythms and paces of battle. If only it had ended as well as it began.

The blonde. Samantha, but call her Sam. Venonaut vs. meowth, a close match, a win, but the second meowth puts Venonaut out of commission. A well-placed scratch to the eyes that draws red and purple blood. Nidoran makes short work of the rest. Carrie, just Carrie, just a few years older than your sister, but more serious than the others. Cathy, never Catherine.

There was a never chance of a loss, not with the level difference, not if you maintained a clear mind and the fighting spirit your father drilled into you "by hand", sometimes by belt.

It comes down to the last match, Cathy-not-Catherine. A young girl like Carrie, just begun her journey all the way from Olivine City, a farmgirl. The gym there wouldn't let her in because she was too young, so she journeyed here. One jigglypuff after another, kicked into submission.

And then she shows up.

She's just there suddenly, in the crowd, sticking out even among all these beauty queens. She doesn't wear her hair pink anymore, just plain black, the only touch of that old color, the scrunchie that she uses to tie the strands back in a tail. She's an elite now, even if a reserve, but she still prefers the low-cut cut-off jeans and the knee length striped socks and the sneakers. The sign on the gym says, "The incredibly pretty girl!" and it's true Bridget can turn heads even in one of her jumpsuits, but Whitney is on another planet.

And so, you're distracted and Cathy is on point and in the zone. A level difference doesn't mean squat before a sudden imbalance in management. Nidoran goes down hard.

You still have growlithe, but now you're embarrassed and you'd rather not embarrass yourself any further. At least her boytoy isn't here, that would've been just too much.

>Better save the trump card for when you need it, call it quits here
>Keep going, keep cool, win this and you can grab the full pass and challenge Bridget
>Take a timeout, it's only a few minutes will void the formality of the match, but maybe you can try to clear your head and save face

You return nidoran to the ball. It's a shame. If he had won this bout he might have evolved. You consider just resigning the match, saving yourself any chance of embarrassing yourself further. But that's not the Plumb way, to leave things half finished. Not unless you die anyway.

"Growlithe, I choose you." You release your highest level pokemon, trying to ignore the eyes boring into the side of your face. Yes she does see that its a great ball. So what? So what if you took charity from your ex-girlfriend? So what if your swallowed pride is making you choke? You'll keep cool. You'll win this and then get the gym badge and be well on your way to paying her back. It's not charity, it's a loan.

"Go for it Luke!" She says. Damn her. Don't look at her. Focus.

"Pound him Jiggles!" Says Cathy. You sister covers her eyes, peeking through a slit in her fingers.

>1d100+6 (+10 Ember -15 Emotional State, +11 Level difference)
>51, 31, 43 vs. 40: Success

You spot Bridget in the crowd now. The wiser thing to do is probably reserve the fruits of your training for the final battle, where the surprise might mean the difference between victory and defeat. But Whitney is here and as much as you might tell yourself that you're over the past, nothing is ever that simple.

You wait until the jigglypuff leaps into the air, where it cannot evade the attack. A mere split second, but it is enough. "Nibbles, like we practiced. Ember!" The flames are shot out more than spit out, without enough force to actually blow the jigglypuff back in mid-air.

It's legs are singed but it's still standing.

Your heart continues to jackhammer in your chest, and you have to force yourself not to glance at Whitney, not to see her reaction. The control is returning, but now you begin to become aware of all the eyes, almost everyone in the gym, and your breath comes short.

>1d100+11 (+10 Ember -10 Emotional State, +11 Level Difference)
>31, 73, 26 vs. 40: Partial Failure

You struggle to keep the panic inside and the dizziness at bay, but the battle goes on. Cathy is down to just this jigglypuff and is unwilling, unlike the others, to resign. You try to choke out a command to finish it off, but your voice gets stuck in your throat.

"Jiggles. Sing."

Even for a jigglypuff, the voice is angelic. The music floats over the battlefield, putting your puppy to soft sleep and, perhaps unintentionally, calming your own nerves. The jigglypuff continues to sing even as it moves for another attack. Unlike your venonaut's daytime nap, this sleep won't break so easily to a blow.

You watch helplessly as the jigglypuff pounds your growlithe with the full weight of his body, singing all the while. Your puppy sleeps through the bruises, the pain of a broken leg.

"Make it stop. Big bro make it stop." Says your sister, tugging at your shirt. You bat her away. You're not going to lose here, not to some random little girl.

"Nibbles. Get up boy. Come on boy, get up! Get up!"

He stirs and lets out a low moan. "Jiggles don't stop singing." The singing only grows louder.

"Come on Nibbles! Get up!"

>1d100+36 (+10 Ember, +11 Level Difference, +15 Opponent Stunned)
>59, 87, 56 vs. 40: Critical Success

You're the only one unaffected by Nibble's sudden outburst. It feels like you had known it would go this way all along, gone is all the nervous energy; gone, the spinning world. What remains is a calm, gentle focus.

"Nibbles, ember." Almost a whisper.

Growlithe spits flame so quick there isn't even a moment to give a counter-command. All that bird shooting finally comes to bear. In ten seconds the jigglypuff is little more than an overdone marshmallow. Cathy balls her fists and for a second you think she's going to cry. But she doesn't. She takes a deep breath, returns jigglypuff back to its ball and smiles.

"Good match." She says.

"Likewise."

You return growlithe and take your sister's hand and make a beeline for the exit. The crowd parts for you, most already breaking off into their private groups now that the spectacle is over. If you're quick, you'll be able to avoid her. You've earned the privilege to challenge the gym leader and you can exercise that at any time (within the limits of the fine print on the pass), no need to stick around for conversation.

Naturally Whitney has the foresight to wait for you outside. "Hey! That was a good match." You crush a drop of sweat rolling down your cheek, wishing she wasn't so goddamn pretty.

"Thanks."

"Are you gonna challenge Bridget now?"

"What's it to you?"

She looks hurt for a second, but you're not fooled. So you tell yourself. "No, I was just...never mind. I'm glad the great balls worked out." She offers. But this is the wrong thing to say right now.

"I'll pay you back as soon as I can."

"What are you talking about? It's a gift. It was a gift, you don't have to pay me back." She's almost pleading with you. Yes, you're certain she's still feeling guilty about it. Which is good. Or maybe it's not good. You scratch behind your ear. There's an awkward silence. "Anyway...you look good. I like the clothes." She says.

These are tricks Luke, you know that don't you? Don't fall for it. She's not different from the trainers she used to rule. The succubus preying on suckers.

"Where's Eric?"

She actually flinches. "He's working today."

"Tell him I said Hi. And ask him how the scyther is working out."

"Scyther?"

"He'll know what I mean. Anyway, I have to go." You don't say it was nice to see her. It never is. You brush past her and in typical movie fashion she grabs your arm. Doesn't say a word. Just stands there. "What?" You say.

"I know what I did to you was messed up and I just--"

You brush her hand away. You turn and even smile at her. "It's cool. Water under the bridge." Neither of you believes that for a second, but she nods.

"I'm heading for Indigo Plateau tomorrow." She says. Despite everything, the utter finality of it still stings.

1/2
>>
>>3374625
"I'm happy for you." You say, somehow still smiling. You're getting good at this. But then, you learned from the best.

"I'm really sorry." She says, doing that thing she does where her eyes get all misty and her voice gets all soft and fragile. More tricks than a two-bit whore.

"Water under the bridge, like I said." You say, warning her not to go any further. She understands. "See you around." And you're gone. Not even a look-behind.

---

Back from the pokemon center with your fully healed party you have a choice to make. You can go right back into the gym and try to nab that badge today. Whitney might still be there, but you can handle it. But the privilege to challenge lasts a full 24 hours. You can always get the badge tomorrow.

Into the wilds for a training montage! Maybe catch something if we find anything decent.

I'm just a cautious person by nature I guess. Challenging a gym with 3 pokemon just makes me uneasy. At the very least there are somethin
>>
>>3374647
>>3374651
Note that grinding in the wild won't level your pokemon any further (unlike the game, in this quest, there's no experience to be gained from grinding the same mons over and over). You can either challenge trainers or try training at a different place.
>>
>>3374630
>>Back to the gym, finish this off and your payout
>>
>>3374662
Can we work on setting up a training course of our own for our mons? Maybe a regimen or something that they can follow? Beyond that, what about training with our sister? Lending her one of our mons or catching one for her and training against eachother in our spare time. That viable?
>>
>>3374662
Well that's good to know. Frankly I would be fine with either catching another mon or going back to the gym. I'm voting for the former but if it is clear a tiebreaker is needed I am willing to switch to keep the quest moving.
>>
>>3374676
I mean I suppose we COULD catch a pokemon for Rosie? Although we could always do that after we beat the gym. Dont we also have a fire stone we havent used?
>>
>>3374676
Both of these are definitely viable. But they won't raise the level of your pokemon. They will however give you bonuses to stats and attacks depending on the particulars of the training regimen.
>>
>>3374693
Sun Stone but it works fine regardless. Sun Stones in this cover Grass, Fire, and the normal Sun Stone evolutions

I hope we can capture a Pidgey or Spearow, for the fight against Bugsy.
>>
>>3374685
I see where you're coming from but I think we still only have great balls and It'd probably be a good idea to wait and use them in a new area, rather than just bumper our team with a mon we're not likely to keep on our team long term. That's my viewpoint though.
>>
>>3374630
>Evolve Growlithe with the Stone, and catch Rosie a Pokemon. After that, go crush the gym.

Best to get this done now. Keep Arcanine in the back in case things look dicey, but work to evolve Nidoran first

Don't do this. It'll stunt Growlithe's growth. Gotta' wait until he learns enough moves.

Well, that's horrifying. Without cheap grinding we might actually have to be competent.
...
We're doomed.
Well, maybe we can get a Drowzee or something. They're usually decent-to-goodish.
>>
>>3374709
This also has merit.
Well we at least kind of know what to expect from the gym. Normal types. A geodude would not be uncalled for.
>>
>>3374734
Yeh I agree we should wait before evolving Growlithe. In that case I'm switching to
>>3372999
>Catch a pokemon and go to gym in the morning
>>
>>3374711
According to this>>3374662 evolving Nidoran is probably a no go at the moment. We could evolve Growlithe but is it worth doing at the moment?

That's a genuine question by the way, I don't know much about Growlithe's leveling and learnable moves, anyone know if it's worth leveling up Growlithe first or if we're better off just evolving it now? Any moves or stat increases worth holding out on?
>>
>>3374734
Things don't seem to be perfectly mimicking the games. We can raise stats through training. I assume we can work to teach our mons moves through practice. QM, are moves limited to level ups and TM's in this?
>>
>>3374742
He learns flamethrower at 17 apparently.
If we want to wait for a bit till he gets there I would be totally on board with that. Being an arcanine that only has Ember and bite would be a bit embarssing for him.

Re: Moves

For movesets I'll be sticking pretty close to the game. However, that's only for the base moves. There's nothing stopping you from creating custom moves (via training) that combine the standard moves in unique ways (e.g the sing+pound combo that the jigglypuff used)

>>3374751
He learns flamethrower at level 50 actually: https://www.serebii.net/pokedex-gs/058.shtml
>>
>>3374742
Typically speaking, stone evolutions mean a Pokemon will no longer learn moves through level up. So unless we can shell out for TMs or a Move Tutor, or hold out for latent egg moves, best to hold off.

>>3374751
That depends if we're going off of the Gen 2 learnset or Gen 7. Gen 2, it's 50.

Y'know. Some ideas, here.

One, we can always go back to National Park and look for a Scyther. They don't only exist on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. We could also check the trees for Heracross.

Two, we ought to check in with the daycare. Not to train, but-- in Crystal, you get an Odd Egg there, that hatches into one of seven possible baby Pokemon. Maybe we can get one of the eggs a trainer didn't want, if we do some favors for them. Could be a good starter for our sister, even.

Not entirely sure what you mean by this. If you mean moves that were introduced in later gens, then yes, those moves are out. I'm only dealing with the movesets from gen II.

Also, regarding TM's, yes they are available and can be obtained in various ways. We'll get to that soon I'm sure (the Department store sells a few).

Sticking to GSC's learnsets is super restricting and I very much hate it, but I do *get* why you're doing it. Just, three questions, in that regard.

Is the Physical/Special split even a thing here? Because, Growlithe, he's a physical attacker, but there aren't any actual physical fire attacks until Gen 4. Which blows. Is Flame Wheel, at the very least, physical?

Are abilities a thing, even? Venonat had the option of using its Compound Eyes before, as a special move of sorts. Is that something sort of, innate to a Venonat, the way Vaporeon can turn invisible in water, or was it a for real actual ability. Does Growlithe have Flash Fire, here.

Can we learn or in some way "unlock" egg moves to help expand our possibilities some? Even if it's just a sort of upgraded version of our other attacks. Like upgrading Bite to Crunch, which we wouldn't normally learn, or Tackle to B- oh we don't actually GET Tackle. Okay. Uh. Take Down, to Body Slam, in that case.
>>
>>3374810
>Is the Physical/Special split even a thing here? Because, Growlithe, he's a physical attacker, but there aren't any actual physical fire attacks until Gen 4. Which blows. Is Flame Wheel, at the very least, physical?

Not so much. Rather than focus on stats, I'll be focusing more on individual attacks and how you go about training your pokemon. So, basically the split is irrelevant for the purposes of this quest.

No, I'll be omitting abilities as well except for the flavor stuff that might be in the pokedex entry or the bulbopedia biology sections.

I've actually thought about this. Yes, there's a way to learn egg moves (hint: catch a drowzee).
>>
>>3374810
>help expand our possibilities some?
TBF he did say that he encourages us to be smart and customize our attacks. There are a whole lot of ways to utilize flamethrower differently
>>
>>3374830
Does it have to be a Drowzee or any Psychic type, because I was really hoping for a Slowpoke.
>>
>>3374838
Nope, doesn't have to be drowzee. It's not so much the pokemon as it is something else.
>>
>>3374838
Iirc Drowzee is notably closer to Goldenrod
>>
>>3374838
Anon, I am so down for a slowpoke. I really hope we can evolve it into a Slowking, probably turn into a whole sidequest for what we need but I would be all for it.
>>
>>3374856
I've been prepping a nice little arc with the slowpoke cave for Azalea town. I'm not gonna railroad of course, but you'll at least have the opportunity to catch one later on.
>>
>>3374846
It is, yes. But Slowpoke are a guaranteed find at the well in Azalea.

>>3374843
Given my understanding of Drowzee and genetics, I'm guessing it's some dream bullshit. Specifically "Drowzee remembers every dream it has eaten, and may show past meals to a person that often sleeps by it." So probably just Hypnosis. Maybe Dream Eater? Hopefully Yawn is an okay substitute.

>>3374830
>flavor stuff that might be in the pokedex entry or the bulbopedia biology sections

Let's see what we're working with here, then.
Venonat: Eyes function as radar units (The Compound Eyes ability last thread) and its body is covered in poison ooze, which is how we were poisoning fools without knowing Poison Powder yet (level 20)

Growlithe: "Growlithe also has a powerful olfactory sense...It is able to smell the emotions of others, and never forgets a scent. However, strong, unpleasant smells can disable its sense of smell for short periods" So tracking, probably, and weak to Stink Type.

Nidoran: Very good hearing and "When angry, it extends its toxic spikes and charges, stabbing with its horn to inject poison" Which is really just Poison Point so.
>>
So. How you handling dex entries? Things didn't get too absurd yet by Gen II, but you still have Pokemon like Machamp or Alakazam who are listed as having absurd feats. Regardless, we should definitely grab an Alakazam.
>>
>>3374856
Not a psychic type, but Mareep also seemed to be a very popular choice last thread. Whether for our own team or as a pokemon for Rosie. Some kind of flyer is also a must have a some point.
>>
>>3374884
>>3374846
We could compromise here. Get our team a slowpoke, catch a drowzee for our sister and have her be our resident....egg move unlocker? Or whatever you'd call it. Also remember hard limit for carrying pokemon isn't 6, just as many as we can reasonably carry, plus we have to people to split the pokemon between. In fact if we just shared pokemon with our sister that would make things a bit simpler.
>>
>>3374884
Can you imagine a mental fight between a Musharna and Drowzee in the dream Realm
>>
>>3374887
Venomoth, while incapable of using Fly, does utilize flight. So while we probably can't ride it, it'll probably function as a flyer in a more limited yet practical sense. Like getting a bird's eye view, or reaching tall shelves.

>>3374856

>>
>>3374885
I assume you're referring to the "5000 IQ" (not sure what the absurdity is with Machamp's entry, seems OK to me). Yeah, we'll figure it out when we get it to it. For now, abra's teleportation abilities make them very difficult to catch. You can try to win one from the casino, but it's going to be a lot harder without the ol' save states.

>>3374907
>Fuck yeah. Probably Rocket related, at that. QM does this egg thing sound feasible >>3374770

Sure. I actually think I forgot to mention the daycare center when you guys were on route 34 before. But it's there. So is the odd egg, but there'll be a quest associated with it, it won't be as simple as just picking it up.

The vote is still tied it seems. So what I'd like to do is just combine the two. Hit the gym, try for the badge and then spend the rest of the day/night in the wild. Does that sound good to everybody?
>>
>>3374909
If we can't get an Elekid egg, I'm rooting for Magnemite. A Mareep for the sister is fine too though.

>>3374918

No, it's best to settle thing as quickly as you can. Two months is not a lot of time and twenty thousand dollars is not a little bit of money. The faster this goes, the better. In reality you probably should have never offered to help Mr. Yamauchi, but old habits die hard. Loyalty is a hard weed to kill.

The guy at the entrance of the gym doesn't even bother asking. He hands you the challenge ticket and waits for the cash. "Good luck." He says. You nod and make your way through the labyrinth of hedges, straight toward the exact center of the gym, a depressed section that is the main battle stadium. Bridget is there already, going through the motions of some gymnastic stretches. She must've been expecting you, because there's a crowd gathered, chairs have even been set up. You let your sister go and sit with them.

"Hope you don't mind the audience." Bridget says. She's a few years younger than you, but she's no longer the kid she was when you first met her. She never really was a kid. "It's been a while since someone has gone for the badge."

"I don't mind." Your pulse is racing, but it's not the usual panic. You're eager not nervous.

She rises from a full split and does a backflip to the trainer position. Her pokeballs are shrunk down and tied to a bit of lace on her wrist. There's only two pokemon there, since this is your first badge.

"Ready?"

"Let's do it."

"Treble" Bridget throws first. A clefairy.

You release Fluffy and the little puffball has once again fallen asleep. You really need to spend some training him out of that. Bridget doesn't lose a beat, instead of making the mistake of waking your venonat up, she doubles down and has clefairy start singing.

>Fluffy: 3/3 (Sleeping)

>Switch out for growlithe, save venonat for later

Going by the Gen II learn set, Flame Wheel and Flamethrower. If we're using a later set, we probably want Flare Blitz.
We really need to get Extreme Speed for our Arcanine so we need to remember that. I would even suggest grabbing Extreme Speed over Flamethrower.
>>
>>3375094

>Stay with Fluffy, his poison fur is still a decent deterrent cleafairy's attacks
We need to keep Nidoran in reserve. I dont know what her second is, but I'd rather not blow King's gasket duelling right away. Fluffy can tough it out for now.
>>
>>3375101
>>Stay with Fluffy, his poison fur is still a decent deterrent cleafairy's attacks
If we switch out, she'll just start singing again.

Try whistling at a high pitch to wake him/her up. I'm going with her. Fluffy's a girl now. Whistle at Fluffy to wake her up.

You wait for the attack, but it never comes. Clefairy finishes its song and then...Bridget switches out.

"You didn't think I was that stupid did you?" She says.

"You learned from the best."

She flushes a little. It's not Whitney you're talking about. Whitney never bothered training the people in her gym. Still, from what you remember most of Bridget's pokemon depend on physical attacks. The poison is going to be hard to get past.

"I choose you...Blob." Unless of course, she has a Ditto. "Transform!" A pale purple version of your own Fluffy now stands staring back at you. So much for poison.

Your venonat wakes from the pain. But it's a hollow victory, his feet are crippled and he can no longer run. That leaves only confusion and poison, but the Ditto copy will be immune to both. You have to switch out, or watch your own venonat get tackled into submission by his copy.

...what? Why? It's explicitly using soundwaves to cause confusion.
I get you're diverging from game mechanics, and frankly that's one of the things I like about this quest. It means we have to know about pokemon instead of games, and that's interesting.
But this is a completely arbitrary change that we'd have no way of knowing about OOC, for no discernable reason, that only gets mentioned right at the moment it screws us over. That's a little disconcerting.

It's to be expected. Nibbles has gotten faster and the blob wonder is slow in the form of your prize-winning venonat, but there's always a little delay from the undigitation process of the pokeball. Growlithe gets tackled to the ground, and bits of the purple fur gets stuck to his skin, spreading their poison into his flesh.

>Super Critical!

You can tell that Bridget wants to switch back to clefairy. It's a standard tactic, put growlithe to sleep and then let the poison finish him off. A maneuver you, yourself might have used, if in the same position. But Nibbles knows the game, you don't even have to give the command, all you do is point and the fire follows.

The instant the poisonous fur catches the flames, it spreads so quickly it almost seems like the copy-nat has exploded. The transformation breaks instantly and the ditto is returned to its ball before the damage can proceed to something fatal. Bridget wipes a stray bead of sweat from her forehead.

"Treble."

The clefairy's back out. You'll have to prevent it from singing some how.

>If you level Growlithe to 50, and then use the Evo Stone, Arcanine will learn Extreme Speed.
Well actually, with stone evolutions you either evolve Growlithe at 49 then level up to learn Extreemespeed and give up learning Flamethrower forever or evolve at 50 with Flamethrower and guve up Extremespeed forever since Move Relearners aren't a thing yet in Gen 2. Of course QM can just say fuck that and change the mechanics for it.
>>
>>3375337
Night QM!
>>
>>3375544
That's not how that works, no.
>>
>>3375544
Why give up on flamethrower? It's a solid move.
>>
>>3376251
If it's a case where we have to pick one or the other, Extreme Speed is better.
>>
>>3376286
I mean I agree but at some point Nibbles is gonna need a fire move better than ember
>>
>>3376251
>>3376286
>>3376317
We explicitly do not have to choose if we wait until 50. Or, we can just get a TM.
>>
>>3376317
Flame Wheel is on Growlithe's direct learn list. We can also pick up Fire Fang.
>>
>>3376355
Fire Fang doesn't exist yet.
>>
Just train nibbles to bite and breath fire at the same time.
>>
>>3376355
Fire Blast is a must have
>>
>>3376398
So like Bite down and then use his breath to burn them? That's brutal. I like the way you think.
>>
Honestly, we should be less focused on moves and just combinations, tactics and whatnot. Teaching Growlithe to intensify an Ember to mimic a Flamethrower, infusing his teeth with flames while biting to recreate Fire Fang. If a move doesn't properly exist in this gen, we'll work to recreate it or improve upon our existing moveset.
>>
>>3376460
I still cant get over that nat 100 last night. We fucking napalmed that ditto

>1d100+11 (+11 Level Difference)
>43, 99, 47 vs. 40: Critical Success

"Sing, Treble."

By the time clefairy open his mouth, your growlithe is already half-way across the field. He's able to get out only the first three notes before Nibbles delivers on his name and sinks his fangs into the clefairy's throat. He goes down hard, pinned down by the force and shock of the blow.

A close range ember would finish the job, but Bridget has the good sense to return her pokemon before it can get that far. The silence hangs in the air.

"Good match." She finally says.

"Thanks. You too." You return growlithe to the ball.

Bridget braces her hands on her hips. "Well, if it had been an even match..."

"You can't always depend on that."

"Ever the teacher. Come on, let's get you your badge."

You follow her back to the entrance of the gym, with your sister behind you. There's a small office there, cluttered with paperwork that is in the process of being sorted into a filing system. "Sorry about the mess. Whitney wasn't really good at...organization." She opens up a drawer and takes out a small black box covered in stickers. It's filled with plastic badges, little yellow diamonds with white borders. She takes one out and puts the box away. "Trainer card."

You hand it to her. She first stamps the back of the card and then pins the badge to the little box on the front. She doesn't hand the card back immediately, taking a second to enter your credentials into the computer systems and then another second to stare at your picture.

"Maybe I should have made copies." You say.

She purses her lips and quickly returns the card. She takes out a checkbook from the drawer and rips out a pre-filled and pre-signed check.

A cool five grand. You're finally on your way.

"So." She says, tapping her fingers on the table. Possibly in an effort to look casual. "When did you come back?"

"Whitney...didn't tell you?" Bless her heart, she's not all bad.

"Tell me what?"

"Nothing."

"Are you really going for the league?"

"Eventually."

"Where are you staying?"

"In the city." Which is not a lie, technically.

She rubs the side of her throat and doesn't say anything for a while. Your sister breaks the silence.

"I like your bracelet!"

"Thanks Rosy. I like your backpack, where'd you get it?"

"Well, there was this store and there was this really nice lady that was wearing a kimono and she was really pretty and--"

"I think we'd better run."You say, taking your sister's hand, squeezing it a little harder than necessary. "Lots to do."

"Oh, sure. Don't let me keep you." As you head for the door, she stands up and makes a noise, something between a squeak and an "um".

"Yeah?"

"Nothing. I was just wondering, if you're not too busy--but I guess you are so--"

"Spit it out."

"Maybe we could hang out sometime. You know, catch up and stuff. It's been a while right?"

1/2
>>
>>3376610
You look around the room and then back to her. "Is Frigid Bridget asking me out on a date?"

"Oh my god. I can't believe you just called me that. And no it's not a date. It's two people--three people--getting food. Rosy will be there too."

"Man, you've changed. You used to yell at the other girls for bringing in their guy friends to the gym. Gym bunnies, isn't that what you used to call them? And now you're trying to pick up guys in your office. Tsk, tsk."

"Alright, get out. Out!" She shoves you to the door, smiling all the while.

Once the trip to the pokemon center is over with, you have the rest of the evening to yourself. You decide to spend it in the wild (after a brief celebratory dinner at the food court) trying to catch some more pokemon.

Fire Fang is a move that is introduced in Gen IV. Meaning it does not currently exist - so yeah, it is basically Fire Fang. But we can't learn it otherwise because it doesn't exist as a move. As for Flamethrower, I suppose. But there's nothing that says we can't hone and train his Ember to increase it's intensity.

It has Drowzee right?

Pidgey, Rattata, Jigglypuff, Abra, Drowsee, Snubbull, Hoothoot, Ditto. All obtainable in wild grass. Tentacool, Tentacruel, Krabby, Magikarp, Stary, Corsola. All obtainable in the nearby body of water. Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Spinarak, Hoothoot, Ledyba, Pineco, Exeggcute. All found in the nearby forestation: hiding in the trees. Cleffa, Pichu, Igglybuff, Tyroge, Elekid, Smoochum, Magby. These are available from the 'Odd Egg' that you receive in Crystal. We know we're Gen II but the game we're in, I can only assume is an amalgamation of the three, so chances are good we could receive the egg in question.

I think there is something to be said for a Ditto as well. If only for how flexible it is.
>>
>>3376838
Neither Hoothoot nor Noctowl are Psychic type. They can just learn a few psychic attacks. He's talking about Natu which, honestly, if we pick up a water type that isn't Slowpoke is who I'd want.
>>
>>3376828
Mostly because Alakazam is still one of the most powerful non-legendaries in existence at this point. An Arcanine, along with an Alakazam and Nidoking? That team setup is champion material. I'm hoping to catch a Larvitar later too, so we can fill our team with Pseudo-Legendaries. I mean, Noctowl is still good regardless though, we can always have a B-Team available for specific scenarios.

Yeah nah. *I* want the Slowpoke. For Luke. I don't want Rosie to have it. Rosie can have a Slowpoke, sure. Why not. But that doesn't satisfy my desire in the slightest. We're not our sister.
>>

Meh. There are Pokemon far more interesting to me than Slowking. Sure, it'll be cool to have, but I don't plan on making a big deal if we miss out.

Absolutely. I'm gunning for a Slowking, but if that doesn't happen, so be it. I'm just saying the "we can offload it to our sister" means jack shit.

I agree, I'd rather take a slowking over a fearow. It's not the end of the world but I think it's an interesting pokemon mosy overlook.

So if we catch a Ditto, I wonder if transforming them into a human would potentially allow them to speak. If so, that could be useful.
>>
>>3377307
Think USUM shows they can appear human but still just say Ditto.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwWwmzk4Tns
>>
>>3377237
For sure, we ought to get Rosie a license and let her catch stuff.
>>
Route 34 is close to the bank and there's a still a few pokemon to catch there. Two birds with one pokeball, even if you would have liked to grab that fishing gear from the thrift store. But, it's not worth the trip Northside, at that point you might as well hike up to route 35.

Your sister comes with you. She's been acting a little strange ever since you won the badge. More clingy than usual. More quiet. You figure she's just tired. About an hour into the catching session, mounted on your shoulders as always, she wraps her arms around your neck and suddenly says, "Big bro, you won't leave me behind right?"

You stop. "What? Of course not, what are you talking about?"

"Because you said you're going to go to the league. That's in Kanto right? Where Whitney is going?"

So she's actually been paying attention. You sigh. She's not a baby anymore, for better or worse.

"Yeah. But I won't leave you behind. You'll be coming with me."

"Really?"

"Really."

"I'll be on my best behavior and I won't cry or bother you or anything."

"You can bother me anytime, Rosy." You say softly. "What else are little sisters for?"

"I'll be really good, I promise. So please take me with you."

"I already said I would dummy. Now keep an eye out for abras."

"Yes!"

Well there's no turning back now. The truth is, you were considering getting a place in the city and maybe leaving her there with someone. Mr. Zinnai or Mr. Yamauchi. It was only a passing thought, one which your sister has now eliminated.

>>
>>3377811
remember we need a drowzee to learn certain moves though, we don't even need to be the one to carry it, our sister can have it once we have a full 6 mon league legal team
>>
>>3377811
This. All are shitmons. Slowpoke and abra are better than drowzee. Skarmory over any other non-legendary bird. Snubbull is just garbage. Balls are too expensive to waste on trash.
>>
>>3377865
>giving rosie the Pedomon
>>
>>3377865
We don't necessarily need a Drowzee for egg moves. That was just the hint. There may very well be other Pokemon that fulfill the criteria. Beyond that, there are probably enterprising folk with Drowzee that offer those services for a bit of scratch, and I don't want to waste a Great Ball or a slot on a Drowzee just to make our other Pokemon better.
>>
>>3377721
changing my vote to pass. If these balls are rare and expensive enough, we shouldn't waste use them on mons that might not make the cut. We've got a fair team already, and I'd actually prefer a skarmory over a pidgey any day
>>
>>3377907
Same. I don't wanna waste it. In fact, we should go buy regular balls with our 5K so that we can actually use it on less immediately useful mons.
>>
>>3377919
The thing is we arent guaranteed something better right away if we wait. 3 mons only makes me nervous desu
>>
>>3377935
Luckily two of those mons are capable of becoming two of the very best existing Pokemon in this current Gen.
>>
QM, can you do me just, a real small favor here, and make your adherence to GSC canon slightly more lax for the purposes of Pokemon distribution? I'm not even talking about these rolls right now or anything, Route 34 is completely fine and even though I'm passing on these choices, it's seriously independent of those rolls. I just wanted to circle back to the idea that certain Johto Pokemon are locked to Kanto, which is dumb and ridiculous. We won't be able to catch any Dark types with how things are set now, and there's really no reason Murkrow, a crow, shouldn't live in cities or forests.
>>
>>3377935
Quality over quantity though, build up the ones you have over just filling up slots with pokemon
>>

>>
>>3378040
Yes. Explicitly. Damn near to the letter.
>>
>>3377943
I'm gonna support this. I'd like it if things were just a bit more flexible. It's difficult managing around such a strict set of rules.
>>
>>3378066
yeah, if this is the case, let's wait for a skarmory
steel flying makes for a literal grass killer
>>
>>3378101
We already have a fire type and two poisons(one of whom is also bug). We are already the worst nightmare of a grass type. Skarmory is great but"grass" killer isn't really a must have honestly
>>
>>3378099
I'm really only talking about situations where a Pokemon from Gen 2 would by game canon be completely off limits to us until postgame. Murkrow, Sneasel. Misdreavus. Slugma. Houndour. Qwilfish. Shuckle. Even Larvitar, though I fully expect that to be extremely rare wherever it may be. I just want the option to catch them, at all.
>>
>>3378101
Grass killers aren't exactly hard to find though, plus our walking flamethrower can do the job easy. That said I'd be for catching a skarmory, beats getting a pidgy or a spearow. If fossil pokemon are possible than an Aerodactyl would also be a cool flying type.
>>
>>3378211
>>3377943

I think there's a certain misconception here that the other areas are somehow locked as they are in the game. They're not. You don't need HM's to get around (barring some exceptions like Whirlpool). You can literally go to Kanto tomorrow if you want (just take the magnet train, you can afford a ticket now). Also the staggered leveling of the gyms means that you can do them in any order. You need 8 badges out of 16 to challenge the elite four and those can be a mix of Kanto and Johto. Just keep in mind that the more badges you have, the stronger the gym leader's pokemon.

Only a few areas are off-limits due to their established danger levels (e.g Cerulean cave, Mt. Silver) and will remain so until you've proven yourself in some way.

Apologies, I guess I should have been more explicit on this.

PIckings are slim in the tall grass and you end up just letting most of the pokemon you find run away. No abras. Just a handful of pidgeys, a stray snubbull and a drowzee that you almost mauled for scaring your sister. Nothing worth spending a great ball over. You should really pick up some regular pokeballs from the Department store once the check clears.

Night falls. Your sister is struggling to keep awake but you don't want to return home empty handed. You feel like you're on a roll and you want to keep the streak going. As you venture further south on the route, there's a sudden consternation from the old daycare center. A sound of breaking glass. Screams. Then four men running off toward the city, bags slung over their shoulders--bags filled with something large and round.

There's a sneasel among their group too.

You can't exactly run after them with your sister on your back. Instead you release Nibbles and have him give chase. The men are fast, but they can hardly outrun a growlithe on foot while burdened with stolen goods. He overtakes them and then blocks their path with a quick burst of flame.

"Shit. What the hell is this?"

"Franky." It's only a guess, but the way the leading man flips his head around and curses, you think you've hit the mark. "Bad luck." You say. "Running into me like this."

"What the hell is this Franky? You know this guy?" Says one of the men. Franky waves him back.

"Drop the bags guys. And you can walk ."

"This is bullshit man." Says another. In the distance, a whistle sounds. A patrolling cop.

"Tick-tock, gentlemen." You release nidoran and venonat for good measure, boxing them in. "Drop the bags and maybe it was too dark to make out your faces."

Franky hesitates, possibly trying to call your bluff. But there's no bluff here.

He drops his bags and runs off into the woods. The others, watch him disappear and then do the same, scattering in opposite direction. The patrolling cop is on you soon after and takes you back to the daycare for a statement. The bags, as it turned out, were full of pokemon eggs.

"So did you get a look at them? Can you describe their features?"

He writes something down on a small pad. "What did you say your address was again?"

"I didn't. Why do you need to know that?"

"Just in case we need to get in contact with you again. You're from the city right? Northside?"

"No. South." He waits for you to finish, but you keep silent. He doesn't budge, just keeps waiting for you to talk. "Look I already told you I didn't make them out. Can't I just go?"

"What were you doing out so late?"

"What am I a suspect now?"

"No one said anything about that."

"That's what it sounds like. I was catching pokemon." You take out the trainer card. "I'm a trainer."

He doesn't even bother looking at the card, just notes something else down in his pad. "I just need the address--"

"You know what? We're done here." You get up. The old man in charge of the day-care grabs your arm.

"Please wait. You've done us a great favor. Those eggs...they were all from other trainers and if we had lost them...thank you."

"I didn't do much. They dropped their stuff and ran when they saw me, like I said."

"Even so. I'd...I'd like to give you something, as a token of appreciation."

"That's not necessary."

"Please. You'd be doing us a service as well." He goes into one of the bags and takes out an egg. "The owner of this egg...won't be coming back for it. You said you're a trainer and we've our hands full as it is..."

Well you won't say no to a free pokemon. You take the egg. "What is it?"

As for Whitney I'm unsure if she's even aware we were in Rocket before it fell. Although she heard our dad died and mentioned so apolligeticaly. I suppose it's possible our home was in a base that was destroyed during the collapse of Rocket
>>
Twenty minutes later you're back in the tunnel. The cop didn't make much of a fuss in the end since the old man technically got all his property back and no one was hurt.

Although you weren't able to catch any pokemon in the wild, the pichu-egg more than makes up for it. Your sister at least is very excited about the prospect.

So the night passes as it usually does and the week begins anew. The check from Bridget has cleared and you are a full 5 grand richer. Still 15 more to go, but now you have some flexibility in how you go about it. Completing the rest of the league is a viable option. Each badge will earn you another 5 grand plus an additional thousand bucks per badge you have at the time of the challenge. Of course, you won't have the luxury of a level advantage pretty soon.

Still, you only need three more badges to pay off Mr. Yamauchi. Or just two and maybe few a trainer battles on the road. The real question is, where should you head next? Azalea and Ecruteak are closest. You've actually never been to Ecruteak, though you do have some experience with Azalea town. It'll be at least a two day hike through the Ilex forest for the latter and you'd like to spare your sister that, if possible.

Another option is to take a ship out of Goldenrod bay, maybe head for Ollivine or Cianwood or even to Cherrygrove to head for Violet city. And of course, you could just hop over to the Kanto region instead. Nothing in the rules says the badges have to all come from Johto.

Honestly this works out really well for us, we get to do both the slowpokwell, and with some more training beforehand our team should have have a pretty strong advantage against bug type pokemon.

Also, how much time do we have before the 20,000 is due. I think we're reasonably doing ok but I just wanted to double check.
>>
>>3379591
>Azalea Town
Oop, my bad
>>
>>3379789
Not to mention we will be passing through the forest on the way there. Nabbing a Beedrill or something would be a bonus
>>
>>3379812
We already have a venonaut though, and we really need to go buy more regular pokeballs before we catch any more pokemon. We don't have too many balls left and they're all great balls. It's a complete waste to waste a great ball on a low level pokemon.
>>
>>3379812
I prefer catching the baseform desu, it was always irked me to catch the base one and not raise it
>>
>>3379857
I agree, I hope to buy more poke balls or participate in the bug catching contest again to catch paras and others
>>
I want to be the type of trainer to use type advantage as much as possible
>>
So if we can get more poke balls, we should capture more flying type to deal with Bugsy just to shoare up our chances of winning. So Pidgey, Spearow and HootHoot
>>
>>3379812
By Gen II standards, Ilex Forest contains: Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pidgey, Zubat, Oddish, Paras, Venonat, Psyduck, and Hoothoot. Without a rod we don't really have fishing options, but headbutting is probably an avenue we can take, in which case add Butterfree, Beedrill, Exeggcute, and Pineco to the list. We've already got Bug and Poison squared away. Especially Poison. (Still want to ditch Venonat and pick up a Heracross or try for a Scyther or something.) So there's Hoothoot and Psyduck, really, and we're about to go to Slowpoke town so scratch the duck off too. I'm not particularly interested in Hoothoot, so I say pass on that one.

I don't think we should catch anything. Let's just get through the forest as quickly as possible, maybe grind a little or face the odd bug catcher here or there.

I think we should give the egg to Rosie, too, as an aside.
>>
>>3379895
>>3379889
I'll be honest, I am completely uninterested in catching a pidgy, spearow, or hoothoot. QM has already said any pokemon is viable with the right training and frankly I find them all to be boring picks. I'd rather capture something cool like a Skarmory, or Aetodactyl if possible. Hell I'd be cool with picking up a Delibird or a Natu too. Plus our earlier pokemon were one thing (we were desperate after all), but I would feel like a complete fool if we had found and used a great ball on a common lvl 2 bird.

As for the egg, I prefered Elekid but was fine with either electric type. They're not as numerious here and Raichu is one of the better ones. I'm all for keeping it and making it a longterm addition to our team.
>>
>>3379961
The underlying issue with pichu is that a lot of people seem to banking on us finding a light orb to make pikachu op
It's a good pick but I think a bit overblown
>>
>>3380002
Sure but even without lightball it's fine. We get that move? Great, if not then whatever.
>>
>>3379895
Also at some point we need a flier
Skarmory is being pitched but there's also nothing that negative about a Spearow. Fearow and Noctowl are good pokemon. At the very least Noctowl is flexible due to its psychic moves
>>
>>3379961
Not asking to use a great ball, only saying once we get a decent supply of regular poke balls. Should we attempt to catch common types
>>
>>3380014
Evolving a zubat into Golbat isn't a bad idea
>>
>>3380018
I wouldn’t mind that as well. I’m just saying to try and use type advantage as possible, since having a backup or two will be a good idea
>>
>>3380029
Oh certainly. One of the reasons I voted Azalia cause we have a fire type. A decent flyer would basiaclly clinch it assuming our rolls dont kill us
>>
>>3380043
I don’t trust rolls that’s why I want a extra flyer or two in the meantime but we will have to see and hope we can get a regular poke ball to do so
>>
>>3380029
Personaly I just think the time spent looking for a pidgy to catch would be better spent training our pokemon for the gym battle.
>>
Elekid has a third evolution I think.... We probably should have gone for Elekid.

Please guys.... We need to get our Sister checked out at a Hospital!
With a Sis based off the Lil Sis from Grave of the Fireflies, we really should not risk her health.... especially with how she has been so quiet.

>>
>>3380053

>>
>Get our Sister checked out by a Doctor/Hospital.... Her being so quiet is worrying.
>Buy some standard Pokeballs, our Greatballs are worth far too much cash to waste on anything less than an awesome Pokemon.
>>
>>3380062
Sure but again I'd rather buy regular balls first, which requires getting to town first, and again I'd rather not waste the last couple greatballs we have left on the off chance something worth catching crosses our path.
>>
>>3380066
>Buy some standard Pokeballs, our Greatballs are worth far too much cash to waste on anything less than an awesome Pokemon.

In the first floor of the Goldenrod Department store there's a giant map on the far wall. It shows all the territories in Johto and Kanto, all the towns and cities, the caves, the forests, the seas between the lands, the mountains, the whole continent enclosed within a 30 foot square. Only a small percent of it is actually labeled. The rest might as well be unimportant, dead zones between the coherences of life.

Your eyes travel from one city to another, one road to another, and points of memory arise from the vast murk. If that is your life, some scattered series of shocks and tragedies and euphorias, it seems an unfair representation. The day-to-day is abstract, in a certain sense, forgotten. And there's something wrong about that. There's something wrong about a life lived in low-dimensions. There's not a lot to love about poverty, but the hunger it inspires sometimes passes to the bones. And it is then that the sunsets begin to take on special significance. And when you don't know how you're going to feed your baby sister, or how you're going to lower yourself enough to beg for change, or how you're going to get back up once you inevitably do, it is then that all abstractions fall away, all distractions, and one engages the bare elements of existence. There is that in poverty which cannot be found in comfort. Life in the dead zones.

Your sister tugs on the hem of your shirt. "Big bro, what's wrong?"

"Nothing."

"Why are you crying? Did you get hurt? Where does it hurt?" You sister begins an inspection of your trouser legs.

"It's nothing. Allergies." You take her hand, it is still very small in yours and though it is impossible and maybe foolish, you wish it would stay that way forever. "Come on, lets go look at some tents."

I'm gonna rule that water/lemonade etc. doesn't actually do anything to heal (and that it costs something reasonable, like 2 dollars instead of 200).

>>
>>3380443

>>
>>3380439
Really? This is where you take the hardline stance on game mechanics?

For the record, a Pokeball costs 200 because it's based on yen. Translated, it's already 2 American dollars, roughly.
>>
>>3380505
The QM has also stated that playing style is more important than type advantages as well as we will only be using GEN II moves, items, and pokemon, yet people still want to argue or choose not to understand this.
>>
>>3380505
Yep, I'm aware of that. The premise of the quest was partly that pokemon-related items are prohibitively expensive. But it doesn't really make sense to extend that to stuff you can get at a vending machine. Likewise, it never made sense to me that lemonade and water could somehow heal pokemon more than actual medicine.
>>
>>3380533
Obvious answer: It's Poke-Water and Poke-Lemonade.
>>
>>3380533
The lemonade is made from berries-- there aren't lemons in the Pokemon universe, there are Nomel berries-- which routinely have medicinal properties. The water is probably mineral water.

It never made sense to me that Murkrow, a Pokemon introduced in Gen 2 and based off of the ubiquitous crow, cannot be encountered in any Gen 2 cities. Not everything makes sense in Pokemon, ESPECIALLY in the earlier gens.

It just seems really weird to me that you're shackling us to very specific, rigorous aspects of the Pokemon game and completely abandoning others.
>>
>>3380610
I dont have a dog in this fight desu. But this is like the third time in a session that this argument has been brought up. Yes we all understand that it disappoints some People over region locking. But in most aspects OP has been very generous. It seems to me like a pointless debate over a minor detail. There is clearly not going to be a systematic change and I think most of the players dont much care one way or the other based on what has been posted.
>>
>>3380628
I just feel like pushing over and over about "Muh murkcrow" is not productive
>>
>>3380633
I don't even want a fucking Murkrow, it's just a very blatant example.
>>
>>3380610
Certain restrictions are for the sake of convenience. For example, the pokemon distributions closely follow the games because there are resources I can use to easily obtain probabilities for catching pokemon, which accord with the game experience, rather than try to make them myself. Finally, as I've said repeatedly (even within the quest itself) you are in no way restricted to one region/location as you were in the game. I even gave a choice to head to Kanto earlier in the thread. Once you get fly you can pretty much go whereever you want.

Other restrictions (or relaxations) are because I want to maintain some kind of internal logical consistency. So, it's a fair point that lemonade is made from medicinal berries (though I'm not convinced mineral water can somehow heal wounds) but, it just seems silly to me to put 200 dollars into a vending machine for a bottle of pokemonade. And if I switch it to 2 dollars but keep the healing properties, then what's the point of potions? And then the mechanical balance becomes a little wonky as well.

There are a lot of ways I could go about this of course. Maybe drinks can only be used outside of battle. Maybe drinks don't heal as much etc. etc. But to me it feels more logical to just have potions heal pokemon and lemonade be a cheap refreshing drink that quenches thirst and little else.

In short, I try not make my rulings arbitrary. Generally there's some kind of reasoning behind them, and generally that's either convenience or consistency or mechanical balance.
>>
>>3380666
I understand your point that Kanto is available to us. That doesn't change my problems with how Gen 2 mons were distributed in the games, and consequently here. Giving workarounds of poor and frankly nonsensical populations doesn't fix the problem, it just abates it.
>>
>>3380699
While I personally get some of the complaints, I think QM is managing a decent enough blend of game mechanics and narrative. Murkrow not showing up in cities and stuff doesn't make a huge amount of sense, but it's nothing I'm too bothered by.
>>
>>3380699
Anon he gave us the freedom to travel to any area we want with little more than a train ticket and cash, this isn't a big deal. He doesn't need to fix every flaw of a 20 year old game, he gave us the freedom to travel where we want, leaving it as is makes it easier to track in general as the QM, and anons wouldn't really give a fuck about most of the pokemon this would affect making it nothing more than a fix you want to see fixed just for the sake of it.

I get this annoys you but the QM has already told us how he wants to handle it and badgering him multiple times isn't going to change his mind, just leave the both of you feeling annoyed. Tbis topic has been brought up and been brought up and dealt with already. Please drop the subject, move on, and let the QM run the game how he wants.

She is quiet because she is worried her big brother, one of the only people ever in her life is going to leave her alone and also take cute af puppy with him and go get hurt, lost,or killed. Also things have been changing so rapidly for her she is probably dealing with mental whiplash. Their dad recently died, which left them homeless for a long time living like rats off of scraps and charity. Now her brother met up with a really pretty lady that for some reason he really seems to dislike but you remember him being friends with, she gives him some super expensive present and he goes and gets you a super cute puppy! Now he is using the puppy and all your other supercute friends to fight and you had to watch them get hurt really bad! But now you have money and new clothes and food and you might be able to tag along with your bestest ever big brother to the Pokemon League!

Seriously, the kid has had her life change so drastically so many times in the past year or two that it is amazing that the past week didnt change her into an emotional confused wreck.

Just saying, sister=best girl, no waifuing allowed though, by anyone, ever. Not even when she is 18!

The Department Store is packed with the usual collection of delinquent teenagers, lonely old people and rich trophy wives. For once, you don't feel like an alien walking among them.

You head for the 2nd floor which is dedicated entirely to trainer equipment. How many times have you gone window shopping here? Run your hands over the display counters, the stacks of pokeballs, the boxes of potions, and antidotes and medicines? Too many to count.

Much as you'd like to splurge, you can't forget your promise to Mr. Yamauchi. You grab some pokeballs and a few potions (in case things get hairy in the forest), the bare minimum. After that it's on to the sporting goods shop to buy some camping gear. You're about ten minutes into the assistant's sales pitch for a "PokeMart brand pop-up tent" when you spot Mr. Prince of the Park himself, Eric, coming through the front door. Whitney is hanging from his arm and Bridget is trailing behind. They don't notice you, that is, until your sister yells out their names. You really need to have a stern word with her about that.

"Woah, funny how we keep running into each other like this. Almost didn't even recognize you dude, nice threads."

"Thanks." You turn to Whitney, who has gained a sudden intense interest in her tennies. "I thought you were heading off today?"

"Tonight." Says Eric, pulling Whitney further into his chest and rubbing her shoulder. "We're just picking up some stuff for Victory Road."

"Oh I didn't know the elites had to do that too."

Whitney opens her mouth, but it's Eric who answers. "They don't. I'm taking her. Romantic getaway kinda deal."

"In a cave?"

"Yeah. Why you have a problem with caves?"

"No, just cavemen."

Bridget bursts out laughing immediately, but it takes Prince Ranger a few seconds to scowl. "Whatever. Whitney likes it. Right babe?"

"Yeah. I love caves, the outdoors...and stuff." Whitney has lived her entire life in the city. Her father's been at the Radio tower for almost 30 years. Whitney's mom was actually his boss when they met. You've seen Whitney throw tantrums over the air conditioning being turned a little too low. There was one time where you suggested the two of you have a picnic at the National Park. She almost broke into tears. You ended up spending the day at the Casino arcade trying to win her a teddiursa-bear. She did like the trip to the Botanical Gardens though, hence the remodeling of the Goldenrod gym soon after.

You don't say any of this. It's not your business anymore. You're over it. And that's exactly why your stomach is turning knots right now and your left hand is forming a fist despite the fact that Eric could probably fold you up like a paper crane if he wanted. Yep, you're definitely over it. You almost feel bad for the guy and part of you wants to ask Whitney if she's seeing someone behind his back too.

"Hi Bridget!" Says your sister, ruining everything. You were beginning to enjoy your brooding. "Look what I have!"

"Hi Rosy, what are you guys doing here?"

"What are you doing here Lou?" Says the Prince.

"It's Luke. Just buying some camping stuff. I'm heading down to Azalea."

Whitney can't help but perk up at this. "You're doing the league?" She says. She looks to Bridget, who is busy admiring the egg you got from the daycare couple. She returns a nod and Whitney returns to considering a career as a professional cobbler.

"No shit?"

"Eric." Whitney slaps his shoulder and nudges her head toward your sister. Who is currently too busy regaling Bridget about her recent adventures to pick up curse words she already knows.

"What? Oh. Sorry, dude. So the league huh? You think got what it takes? Not everyone makes it you know? Most don't even get as far as the eight badges." And there's the patented Prince smirk. How is it even possible to have such a punchable face?

"Yeah, most people don't."

Eric just stares.

"Eric tried for the league too." Adds Whitney. "But he only got as far as 5 badges."

"6 badges babe." He's not pleased that Whitney has just decided to share this bit of personal history. "I could've done it if I wanted to but you know, I found my calling."

You sigh. Neither of them are really not worth the energy. "Honestly I'm just in it for the prize money." You say, feeling your face get hot.

"Yeah, the last time I saw you and your sister, I mean damn dude--" Whitney pulls him toward a rack of portable lanterns before he can finish the thought.

Which leaves just you and Bridget and of course the originator of all this calamity, your sister. "Big Bro." She's looking at you with those puppy dog eyes that she learned from Nibbles (or maybe he learned them from her, the conspirators).

"No." You say.

"But you didn't even hear what I--"

"Whatever it is, I know I'm not going to like it. So, no."

She ignores you of course. "I heard that there's a fair today at the boardwalk and that there's going to be rides and games and a ferris wheel and a rollercoaster."

"And pray tell, who was the informant of this critical intelligence?"

She looks up at Bridget. You look up at Bridget. Bridget is rifling through a rack of camping clothes like her life depends on it.

"Man are these combat fatigues really this cheap? It's a steal." She mutters, laughing like an insane person.

"Please?" Says your sister. "Please, please, please, please?"

"You know that's not going to work right?" Yes, it will.

"Yes, it will." She says.

"And do you have anything to say about this Miss child-whisperer?"

Bridget fiddles with her bracelet, trying to look contrite. "It'll be fun?"

"And what about treking through miles of harsh jungle? Come on Rosy that's fun too right?"

Rosy folds her arms. She almost looks like your father when she does that.

Bridget takes over the reins. "Come on, help me out Luke. It's like watching over a potential car crash over there with those two. It's like being in a car crash."

"Well why'd you get in the car?"

"Well...I kind of mentioned that I was going to the fair. And one thing led to another."

"Going alone?"

"No, not alone." She folds her arms too and kicks the carpet. "Alright, well so what? I like riding the rollercoasters. Is that so wrong? Can't a girl ride rollercoasters? I won't be persecuted by the likes of you."

"Frigid Bridget going to the fairs all alone." You shake your head. "It feels like old times."

"And what about you?"

"And what about me?"

"Yeah, most people don't." She deepens her voice in a horrible imitation of your own. "Was that about old times too?"

"You don't know what you're talking about. So I'm just gonna let that slide. Come on Rosy." You take her hand.

"It's not like that OK. I know how it is, I'm just saying, we could...just pretend or something. You wanna get back at her right?"

"I'm pretty sure she doesn't--"

"Yes she does."

Your stupid little heart actually jumps. "Really? I mean no. Just..."

One obvious bonus of going to the fair will I assume be lore insight into how we know Bridget. We apparently trained her so im curious if she was also involved with Rocket in some way. Having so many of our old allies in one place is gonna be a good power pool to dip into later on
>>
>>3382717
>also involved with Rocket in some way
Honestly I got the impression that Luke was involved in the running of the gym (or at least training its gym trainers) at one point in time.

That arrangement going belly up might explain a bit of the bad blood we have with Whitney.
>>
>>3382723
Im actuallly curious if Whitney knows what a shady family we come from or even that we were in Rocket. Dialogue suggests we had our falling out before our dad was killed.

>>
>>3382707
She pretty clearly has a crush on Luke and is desperate. She may not be considering the impact it might have on the sister and they see this is our only chance she seems like a nice girl.

>>3382723
What I'm seeing is that Luke ran and possibly trained every one of the gym while Whitney used it as more of a popularity contest slash way to Market herself. Apparently it's some point she grew the fuck up though at least that's the impression I'm getting but you know who knows. Worried she might have had a relationship with Luke and ruined it and now has a relationship with the ranger jackass and is doing everything she can to keep it cuz she's afraid of being alone or some such but that's way way way speculation on my part
>>
>>3382666
>No. That's not your style. But if your sister really wants to go, you see no harm in tagging along.
....We did finish up earlier than expected here. One afternoon isn't going to harm us as long as we focus on our training right after.
>>
>>3382800
I'm not sure if Luke did all the work per se, but he definitely seems to have helped run the gym. I think we can safely say Bridgett has a crush and feels like she's got to at least try since Whitney is in a relationship and whatever specifically happened between Whitney and Luke.

Whitney on the other hand clearly has some feelings for Luke, whether that's still romantic like Bridgett claims or if it's just a mixture of familiarity and guilt, but it's there. I'm pretty sure being with Eric has nothing to do with feeling lonely, well mostly anyway, more that he's the son of Koga and is an in to advance her career. A bit scummy admittedly but I can't really blame her for trying move up in the world and get in the Elite 4.
>>

Alright, so why not invite her on the trip to the next town? It saves time and leaves Whitney to imagine what’s going on. 2 pidgeys and all.
>>
>>3383062
Well she's the gym leader now, so probably not going to happen. Going out for a few hours to a fair is one thing, I don't think she can just up and leave for a couple days after just getting the job.

>No. You're on a clock. You'll be in Ilex by the end of today.
>Ask if she wants to accompany You two on your excursion. Everyone wins.
>>
There were a lot of good times with Whitney too. At first, you just liked her because she didn't ask too many questions. There was an understanding. She wouldn't ask about what your father did for a living or what the two of you were doing in Goldenrod and you wouldn't ask about the men you sometimes saw with her mother. Men that weren't her husband.

And because she was pretty. To just have her on your arm was to be the envy of every man within a hundred yards. Maybe it was a little shallow but it was like that only in the beginning. The more you got to know each other, the more you realized how similar you really were. And when your sister was born...well it would've been a lot harder if she wasn't there.

That's why it hurt all the more when you finally found out. Even if it does make your heart race and even if you want to hurt her back, you no longer have that luxury. There are more important things to contend with.

"I can't. I'm on a clock." You say. "I'm sorry Bridge."

Bridget slowly closes her eyes. "Nah, don't be. It was worth a shot right?"

"Rain check."

"Sure." She sighs and gives you a weak smile. "Good luck with the league."

"Yeah." You almost ask her to accompany you to Azalea, but she's the new gym leader now. And like Whitney, she's been waiting for this for a long time too. "See you later feraligatr."

"God, you're so lame." But you're both waiting for it. "...in a while totodile."

---

It's around twilight when you're finally at the entrance of Ilex forest. Your sister has been surprisingly well-behaved so far. She walked by herself the whole way, not once complaining or asking to be picked up. Bridget may have had some influence in her high spirits:

"See you later feraligatr." She says.

"In a while totodile."

She's been saying this non-stop since she heard it.

"Now you, now you."

"See you later, feraligatr."

She covers her mouth, unable to suppress the giggling. It's the funniest joke in the world. For another two hours more anyway. "In a while totodile!"

As for yourself, you've only been thinking about the news you got from Mr. Zinnai when you had returned to the tunnel to grab the rest of your things. Apparently some stranger had been asking about you. By name. He even threatened some of the other guys when they pleaded ignorance. He didn't give his name, but you have a pretty good idea of who it is. He had a sneasel with him.

You camp out in the forest once night falls. Your sister tries to watch the stars come out with you, but soon falls asleep on your lap. You bundle her up in the tent. The night is still young in the forest and the moon provides ample light.

You take the six-pack of pokeballs with you. You don't plan on venturing far from the campsite, in case your sister wakes up and gets scared. The forest is eerily quiet, not even the usual sounds of hoothoots and psyducks roaming about. Not even wind. You search the area in a counter-clockwise spiral, finding little to get excited about.

Three hours of futile search later, you come to a small clearing where an oddish is busy digging itself a hole to rest in for the morning.

Not exactly a top shelf pokemon but the oddish has its uses. It's cute if nothing else and your sister will love it. You approach cautiously, hoping not to scare it off. It stops its digging and watches you, folding one of it's leaves like an ear.

You release growlithe from its ball. It's a little groggy given that's near midnight and even lets out a yawn, but is ready to do battle nonetheless.

"Bite him Nibbles. But gently." Your growlithe gives you a confused whine before loping over to the oddish. The oddish never really stood a chance. Your growlithe bites it by the leaves and its just picks it off the ground where it flails its legs uselessly. He then brings it back to you like he was playing fetch.

You try the pokeball. It's a fairly straightforward capture.

Thank god we used an expensive pokeball we just bought to catch a glorified houseplant thats weak as shit to start with, going to be utterly useless at the bug gym, evolves into another poison type if we even put in the effort to train it, and finally needs a leaf stone to stay relevant late game. Hopefully we can get back before our sister gets eaten by a ursaring or something

Sorry for your terminal shit taste anon.

But really it's our answer to rock, ground and water at this stage (since Pichu is going to need a lot of training before it's battle worthy, and it needs to hatch first).

Plus two of our three other mons also need stones to evolve so it's not like its the only dead weight here.
Also fits the theme of our poorfag collecting a bunch of stone evo mons for his team.

>>

No hating.
>>
>>3383702
Actually we have 4 total Pokémon who need a stone to evolve if we want to have a Raichu as well.
>>
>>3383729
I say give it to the sis, because mad or not he's not wrong. We have two poison types already and we're trying beat gyms and make money, we're on a timetable. There was no point to this, we were better actually training to beat the next gym, not waste time and balls on some low level pokemon redundent to our party anyway.
>>
>>3383484
>Time for some post-midnight training
>>
We need to train the pokemons we currently have, guys. Really no need to catch 'em all.
I say we give the oddish to sis and train our venonat instead.
>>
>>3383771
I disagree. I prefer having some redundancies and using the type advantage for certain gyms, the more type advantages we have the better we can Utlize for gym battles
>>
People are forgetting this is Gen 2, there is quite literally no use for grass types.
>>
I’m sure there is or if we extend to the Kanto region at least
>>
>>3383793
I dont think that's entirely fair. If we fight a water, ground or rock type it might come in handy. it might not be the strongest but it pays to be prepared
>>
>>3383787
Redundancy in pokemon is fine for the games but training 2 or 3 teams is a waste of ingame time.
>>
>>3383809
Not really, grass type is basically useless in this gen. Any pokemon that can be taken down by a grass type weakness can be taken down by something else just as easy, or hell even bruteforced.

It just feels like a major disconnect from the MC. He comes off as hyperfocused, he wants to build up a strong team and make money fast to both give his family a future and help out one of the few guys who helped him and his sister.

So here's what I've seen so far

We beat our first gym early so that we can prep and leave first thing in the morning to a new area to allow further training and new options for catching, but then instead choos to waste the rest of the day looking for pokemon, then choose to not even catch it meaning we basically just pissed the day away for no reason.
After that we finally get to buying equipment, and refuse an invitation to the fair because we're on a timetable, fair enough we're busy. Yet instead of actually prepping for the gym we choose to go randomly catch pokemon, then catch a mon that adds no real value or niche that another mon we have couldn't do better. This was a waste of time and money, nothing more. This isn't a videogame, we're not a 10 year old with infinite time tasked with catching them all. I mean hell at least the Drowzee could have taught egg moves.
>>
>>3383793
>Implying we're never ever going to face a trainer who users rock / ground
Okay then.

>>3383846
We can go to Kanto if we vote for it, so we're not stuck in gen 2 forever and ever. If we go to Kanto grass is going to be useful for Brock and Misty at least.

>bruteforced
Against a massive hunk of rock? QM is going for realism in the battles, so unless the bruteforcing pokemon is super sturdy (and the only one of ours so far that might fall into that category is King when he's a Nidoking) we're going to have a bad time.
>>
>>3383846
>He comes off as hyperfocused, he wants to build up a strong team and make money fast to both give his family a future and help out one of the few guys who helped him and his sister.
Don't forget wanting to destroy whoever it was that killed his father
>>3383852
I kinda get what he's saying. But I'm not comfortable taking on a rock trainer where our only real chice is double kick from King
>>
>>3383852
We will have king for ground mive coverage and will have to get a water pokemon to surf. We also have an electric type for misty. We don't really need a grass type and definitely don't want another poison. To be honest, I am keen to palm off venonat. It's pretty shit
>>
>>3383859
I'm inclined to agree about our glut in poison. But theres literally no reason to get rid of fluffy when we dont have a replacement
>>
>>3383856
Yeah exactly. If we go against a rock / ground pokemon and King is taken out of action (not hard to do since he'll only get buff as a Nidoking) then the pokemon will easily be able to tear through Nibbles + Pichu (type disadvantage) and Fluffy.

>>3383859
>Hating on Oddish
>Palming off Fluffy
What

Besides without Fluffy Nibbles would have been stuck as a shiity NFE for ages.

>definitely don't want another poison
Yeah we're obviously going for Bellossom, the superior (and cuter) Oddish evolution.

Also we don't have a water pokemon yet, and King doesn't even have STAB with double kick. He'll go down easily against any decently trained rock / ground type unless we get godly rolls and then we're screwed.
>>
>>3383869
I think you're focusing on rock/ground too much. We can challenge the gyms in any order so can play to our strengths and target whomever we are strong against. We only need 8/16 badges so don't even have to fight brock.

Oddish is ok, but anon is right, grass types are not the best in gen 2. We will be getting a water type (hopefully gyrados or octillary) and already have an electric type so we dont need a grass type.
>>
>>3383882
Sure we can avoid the rock / ground gyms, but I'm worried about just regular trainer battles where they have a rock or ground. Presumably we're going to be doing them soon, since we're getting enough money to be able to put down a wager?

>Water type
Don't really care which one we get, but if you want anything other than a Slowpoke you're going to have a battle on your hands.
>>
>>3383882
>We can challenge the gyms in any order
While this is true you have to keep geography in mind. We cant afford to criscross the whole country constantly. Time is an issue.
>I think you're focusing on rock/ground too much.
Will you be saying this we fight an onix or golem? There are trainers in this world who arent gym leaders
>>
>>3383886
Well we are heading for that slowpoke cave so we'll probably pick one up then.

>>3383898
If we come up against a golem an oddish isn't going to do shit pal.
>>
>>3383864
>>3383859
I think of fluffy as our low to midtier. It's fine for now and I could see us using it for a couple more gyms.
>>
>>3383902
An Oddish will have better chances at taking it down than any of our other mons apart from King, with its spore attacks and STAB absorb.

An Oddish will probably last longer than King too, especially if it gets luck with stun spore or sleep powder.
>>
I kind of want to catch as much as possible and have the available Pokémon we do capture as alternatives for different gyms or battles, we are not limited to just six and having our extras take care of our sister while we are busy seems sweet.
>>
My idea is a Red or Gary approach that we have different Pokémon that we captured and use for different situation, have a bug gym, fill the party with as much flying, rock, and fire types and such.

If pokemon pop up and we have regular balls, I say use them
>>
>>3383936
I agree with the sentiment that we shouldn't waste balls. But some anons seem to want a power team that just isnt possible at the moment. Our most drastic need rn is a flyer
>>
>>3383936
>>3383939
That sounds fine in theory but we have to spread our time training each and every mon to be any good and spend time grinding their levels, not to mention most pokemon in the same given area will have a lot of the same thing making catch a bunch of them redundent. Catching a pidgy makes a spearow redundent for example, catching an oddish when we already have two poison types to focus our training on was redundent.

The big key factor about the red/blue approach is the lack of any real time constraints. In a pokemon game you can capture, train, and grind with what you want with no restraint and the half hour you spend grinding your new mon you just caught into being good would take at least couple days in game if we focused purely on that. This isn't a workable way of building up a team, not without hitting a wall by the 4th or 5th gym at least.
>>
>>3383954
We can always just give the oddish to Rosie when we dont need it anymore
>>
Why the obsession with slowpoke?
>>
>quest at this point is clearly about obtaining money before the deadline
>quest in general is about limited time and money
>anons want to have a dedicated team to fight each pokemon type
>>
>>3383973
Wasn't the endgame of this quest getting revenge on the guys who killed our dad?

This 20,000 pokedollar plot is just a sidequest designed to forced Luke into getting a decent team together.
>>
>>3383963
Why not?
>>3383982
Well too bad we accepted it. Besides having a decent built team is only a positive. Again, we're role playing, at least try to play the role and not just see everything from a meta standpoint.
>>
>>3383973
Getting the money is a side quest but being frugal is a must but having several of the same type like two or three I feel is a must.

>>3383954
Oddish is also a grass type in which we don’t really have

And we have a couple months, I’m not saying you are wrong and we are limited but getting regular poke balls in small numbers of regular is not as hard goal now so using them on common Pokémon is fine. Which I mention above using two or three that are advantages against gyms should be used WHEN possible.

Not saying you are wrong but if we can afford to we should try to do so.
>>
>>3384061
Well it’s a decent water type that’s viable. And can know psychic moves.

It’s a decent choice though not against Bugsy or Ghost gum leader
>>
>>3383982
Assuming the person who killed our dad is who a lot of people seem to think, we are gonna need a strong team.
>>
>>3384071
I get you but it should be noted we have a fire type and two poison types. I think we're fine as long as we train up our current team, especially with nidoran right at the edge of evolution.
>>3384074
True but the well is right there and there are enough slowpoke in there to trip over, would not be difficult in the slightest to grab one. Plus we can build it up early and even possibly find a king rock in there since slowpokes and poliwraths sometimes carry them. Find that too and we can hold on to it until it's ready for us to evolve it
>>

>>
>>3384151
I mean, there's Zubat and Golbat. And if you fish there are Goldeens, Seakings and Magikarps. Surfing would get you Slowbros, but we're not in any kind of position to get that.
>>
>>3384163
Umbreon and tyranitar could be worth a look at too
>>
>>3384201
>>3384188
Nan it's too bad we've already got 3 poison types or I would love a zubat, Crobat is awesome. I definitely want a slowpoke, but I wouldn't be against getting a Magikarp. As annoying as it would probably be to train, a Gyrados is worth the effort. Plus it would fill our flying type role.

Still though, a Slowking and a Skarmory/Aerodactyl in the future would be ideal.

Leaving your sister alone for so long doesn't sit well with you. You practically sprint back to the campsite, almost spraining your leg in the process. The rush proves unnecessary. Your sister is sleeping peacefully in the tent, a slow line of drool crawling down her chin that you wipe away with your sleeve.

You settle in next to her and just as your eyes begin to close, you hear some rustling coming from outside the tent. Shadows thrown by moonlight dance on the canvas, shrinking as their owners come closer.

"You said he was out." The first shadow whispers.

"He is."

"What's that?"

"Shoes?" There's the sound of a hand hitting the back of a head, followed by hushed cursing. "So, I guess he came back then. Well so what? He's probably sleeping. We'll hold 'em down."

You reach for your pokeballs only to realize that you took off your belt and the balls are currently lying at your feet.

Reach forward with your leg, you hook the body of the belt around your toe and pull it to your hand. You don't release just yet, instead you palm two balls and roll out into the grass, while the two are still bickering. They're so distracted they don't even notice you come out.

You get growlithe and venonat out. Growlithe is still groggy but venonat is wide awake. The men freeze the moment they hear venonat's high-pitched chirp and slowly they turn around. You don't recognize them. They're not Franky's men at least.

"Who are you?" You say.

The first one raises his arms to his shoulders and flashes a gold tooth. "Relax kid, we're just here to talk."

"So talk."

The second one is skinner than the first and isn't as chatty. He releases a pokemon of his own: a sneasel. Now that, you do recognize. Skinny takes a step forward, but Gold-tooth puts an arm on his shoulder, as if to hold him back.

"Let's keep this civil."

"Where's Franky?"

"Don't worry about Franky. He's...occupied."

"Big bro?" Damn it. It would've better if she had slept through this.

"Don't come out, Rosy. Stay inside."

"What's wrong?"

"Just stay inside Rosy."

"Are you OK? Who are those people?"

"Rosy!"

"O-ok."

"No one needs to get hurt, kid."

"You're right, no one does."

"We're just here to deliver a message."

"You never heard of flower mail?"

Gold-tooth laughs. "Good one. No, this kind of message is better delivered personally. Face-to-face."

Growlithe bares his teeth and crouches down, preparing for his own face-to-face, should you give the word.

"Easy, Nibbles."

"I've eaten there once or twice. What's this about?"

"I think you know."

You raise your hands, showing off the fingers like a magician with nothing up his sleeves. "Am I holding spoons? Do I look psychic to you?"

Gold-tooth finally stops smiling. "The divorce. It was supposed to be over and done with last week. Suddenly Mr. Yamauchi files for an extension and a formal court hearing."

"Sounds like something to ask his lawyer about."

"We did. Turns out he's not doing it pro bono." Gold-tooth takes out something from his back pocket, a slip of paper, a receipt. "Nineteen thousand and three-hundred dollars. That's the estimated cost according to the lawyer. We know Yamauchi doesn't have that kind of money lying around and we know he hasn't filed to sell the restaurant or the condo."

"Seems like you know a lot."

"You're going forget about whatever Yamauchi promised you for the money. He's never going to get that money."

"How do you figure?"

He shakes his head, scratching the top of his brow. "Kid, you got some spunk in you. I like that, really, but this isn't a game. The man I work for isn't known for being delicate or merciful. Plus, he's in love. A young guy like you can understand how that might influence how a man thinks. He wants the divorce over and done with, he wants the kids. The kids make the wife happy, the wife makes him happy. Everybody's happy. Don't you want everybody to be happy kid?"

"Sure and world peace too."

He snorts. "This is your one and only warning kid. We had a hell of a time finding your place and on top of that we had to come in here after you." He reaches inside the breast pocket of his overcoat and takes out an envelope. He throws it at your feet. "Compensation for...well, let's say breach of contract." You don't move, your eyes never leave his face. "We didn't touch your sister this time, kid. We could've, but we didn't. I want you to remember that."

You can feel your teeth smash together, the blood rush to your head.

"What happened to Franky? How'd you get his sneasel?"

He runs his tongue over his gold tooth. "I wanna see that extension cancelled by next week." He turns to leave.

>I hate to do this but as long as they control Frankies Sneazel not trying to knock it out is gonna fuck us over.
We can always heal it if we manage to kill these two goons. Presuming it's actually loyal to Frankie and fighting cause they have him. The other possibility is that it's just a gang pokemon loaned to whoever needs it. Regardless we cant focus on it's wellbeing. Stop short of killing it if we can. But this is real shit, not some game.

"Fluffy, let it rip." There's just enough time to cover your ears. The sound is like someone dragging a nail down a chalkboard combined with the interference from a microphone that's been brought too close to the speakers. Everyone else, including Nibbles, is not as quick to the punch and soon buckles over clutching their heads in pain.

Gold-tooth and Skinny are both bleeding from the ears. The machoke mistakenly puts Skinny in a headlock and promptly throws him into some bushes. Sneasel has managed to maintain a measure of composure and is simply leaning against a tree, trying not to throw up.

Nibbles is covering his ears and whining.

"Good job Fluffy."

"Big bro. What was that sound?"

"Stay in the tent, Rosy."

The enemy is disoriented but not down. Sneasel's trainer is out of the game so it's just the machoke you have to take care of. Time to finish this.

It's not like we'll just drop him, Rosy is probably way too attached at this point to do that to her, so she can just keep it. We get our full team, she gets a well trained, decently leveled pokemon to protect her if necessary, it's a win-win.

"Fluffy, tackle."

Watching Fluffy tackle a pokemon almost twice his size almost makes you laugh. The little puffball lands smack in the middle of the machoke's bare chest, leaving behind an unhealthy pasture of poisonous fuzz. The machoke, still confused, attempts to karate chop a tree, slicing a branch the size of your leg into two neat halves.

Gold-tooth has managed to recover and is trying to run away, not even bothering to return the machoke to its ball. Nibbles has also recovered and sneasel, without it's trainer to guide it, has decided to high-tail it as well--running into the forest instead of back to Skinny.

>95, 53, 82 vs. 60: Success

"Nibbles, go get 'em boy." You point toward Gold-tooth's shrinking backside and your growlithe darts off to sink his teeth into it. Gold-tooth disappears around a bend and a moment later there's a shrill scream, followed by Nibbles dragging an unconscious Gold-tooth back by the seat of his trousers.

You grab the pokeball in his hand and return machoke and then send Nibbles after Skinny. In the meantime you search Gold-tooth's pockets, finding a wallet, a flask of cheap alcohol and mobile phone. Rifling through the wallet you discover that his name is Gordon Bishop and that he works security for SMC: Saffron Maglev Corporation. That would make his employer someone reasonably high-up in the corporate ladder. You also find about two grand in the wallet, two more in the envelope and a couple of bank cards that are better left alone.

The cell phone call history shows the last call to be from an unlisted number. Possibly the boss-man himself. Unfortunately you get no bars in the forest. You grab the pokeball registered to sneasel and hook it to your belt. If you had a pokedex you might have been able to track the sneasel using the serial number on the ball, but as it is, you'll have to wait untill you get to a Pokemon center where you can force digitization using the PC. You're sure Franky will appreciate getting his sneasel back in one piece.

Speaking of which.

"Don't move."

"You just made a big mistake kid. A huge mistake. You know who I work for? Do you? I tried play nice here, give a kid a break seeing how he lived and all but now--"

"Shut up." Nibbles backs you up with a low growl. Franky shuts up.

"Big bro? Is it OK to come out now?"

"No, Rosy, stay inside."

"But I have to go."

"Right now? You can't hold it in?"

"No. I really gotta go."

"You can't hold it in for two minutes."

"Big bro!"

"Alright, alright." You tent your fingers on your forehead. "Number one or number two?"

"Number one."

Thank god for that.

You briefly consider just letting them go, so that you sister can be spared the sight of them, but they don't get to threaten your family like that and just walk away.

"Try to run and I promise you I'm going to take my time. Fire can do a great many things to skin and flesh, none of them pleasant. I have your wallet and Nibbles here is an excellent tracker."

Gordon just shakes his head. "You have no idea kid, no goddamn clue."

"Nibbles, watch him, I'll be right back." For good measure you also release King, to keep guard in case the other one wakes up. Then you carry your sister to some nearby bushes so she can do her business in privacy.

"Done?"

"All done." You take her in your arms again and though she sees the situation with the two men, one of whom is unconscious and bleeding from his head, she senses that now is probably not the best time to ask questions. You put her back to bed and tell her go to sleep and shuts her eyes tight in an effort to do so. You grab some supplies from the tent.

And then it's back to work.

"You're wasting your time kid, I'm telling you squat. If anything you're already dead. You let me go and do what I told you and maybe we forget this whole thing happened. It doesn't have to go down this way."

You ignore him to check on Skinny. He's still breathing but the wound on his head looks serious. The skin has peeled back almost to the bone and blood is flowing freely.

You take out the potion you bought from the Department Store. Technically the bottle says it can work humans too. He'll still need some kind of medical attention but it'll stop the bleeding long enough to get it.

But you don't spray him just yet, you crouch down on your hams and place the potion on the ground.

"He dead?"

"Not yet."

"Come on kid. You're not a killer."

"That remains to be seen."

The sneasel might actually work with us since we know Frankie, especially if we try to return them to him.

The Machoke... If we can't get it to listen odds are we get a broken spine, I don't think it's worth risking. Selling a pokemon that's registered to someone else is probably a surefire way to get fucked over by law enforcement or tracked down by these guys employer. I think we either need to let it go (break it's ball?) or just leave it in the ball and toss it someplace where these guys wont find it

One thing we could do is set it free from the ball it's registered to and then immediately catch it with our own. We could also just kill it, a dead mon out in the wild won't raise questions. Honestly I think helping Frankie is a mistake, we don't owe him shit and we're putting ourselves and our sister in serious danger by trying to play hero.

Right now if these two just vanished in the woods their boss still isn't even sure if we're really involved in his business at all, they could have gotten fucked over by a wild mon in the woods for all they know.

But if we charge in to rescue Frankie we're gonna shoot all the way up on this guys radar and to be perfectly honest if this guy has trainers who can handle a Machoke on his payroll as entry level goons we are not going to be able to protect ourselves or our sister with our current lineup of pokemon.

"What did you do with Franky?"

"I'm not telling you a goddamn thing."

"Nibbles." Nibbles carefully puts Gordon's shin between his teeth. "Now, you should know that I only have one potion. So I'll ask again. What did you do with Franky?"

"Alright, just relax kid. Just calm down."

"Did your eardrums burst? Are you hard of hearing?"

"Look, I don't know exactly where they took him alright? It was couple of SMC guys, loaded him on the train and that's all I know."

"Took him where?"

"The train was going to Saffron, but they would've taken him someplace else after."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying. Nibbles--"

"Alright! Alright, goddamn. I swear on my life I'm gonna get you for this, I'm gonna personally knock out your goddamn teeth." He swallows a ball of spit. "He wouldn't talk."

"They hurt him?"

"What do you think? He's loyal I'll give him that."

"Will they kill him?"

"No, that's not how we do things. By now he's boarding a liner on the Ollivine docks. From there, they'll send him to Cinnabar."

"For what?"

"Labor. Cheap labor, if you know what I mean. Work the mines or work with the reconstruction crew. Until..."

You stand up and turn away.

"It's too late kid. He should've just talked, we ended up finding you anyway. And we will again, we know where you're going. And the same thing will happen to you, if you don't do the right thing here. You and your sister."

"Nibbles use em--"

"Stop right there!" A strong clear voice rings out from behind you, coming from the bushes. Gordon seizes the momentary distraction to wrench his foot free from Nibbles's mouth and make a run for it. Nibbles waits for the command, but it never comes. You don't want to incriminate yourself further.

The bushes split apart, as though someone just sliced them with a samurai sword and a man with tremendous, bulging muscles, emerges. His half-naked body is glistening with sweat. Beside him a farfetch'd chews contentedly on his leek.

"Don't move." The man says, dropping to Skinny to check if he's still alive. Seeing that he is, he takes out a potion and sprays his forehead with it, sealing the wound with a bright blue foam that solidifies into a transparent crystal within a few seconds.

"Let's go. You're coming with me." He says, tossing Skinny over his shoulder like a throw-pillow.

The man considers your explanation for a second, looking at the tent, then toward the bend where Gordon disappeared, then at Nibbles and King.

"I'm Cutter. This is Donald." He nods to the farfetch'd and the latter waves his leek. "We were camping nearby when we heard a scream. I'm a logger, well, actually I work with charcoal, in Azalea. Well, actually, my master does, I'm just an apprentice. You say this guy attacked you? You clearly got the better of that fight."

I'm leaving King here. I'll have to tell my sister what's going on.

You agree to the conditions. Cutter seems nice enough and you're in no condition to go trekking through the woods in the middle of the night. You join your sister in the tent and fall fast asleep.

Cutter returns in the morning as promised and the three of you journey to Azalea together. Your trip is considerably shortened because of the farfetch'd cut move, which basically let's you cut straight through the meandering trail into the trees. You reach Azalea by late afternoon and that only because of your sister. Cutter doesn't say much through the trip, only that Skinny will survive.

Azalea town hasn't changed much since the last time you were here. The log cabins and wide open streets are a stark difference to the urban sprawl you just left behind. Enormous Azalea trees take the place of skyscrapers and the air is fresh and clean.

"Look, look! There's another one!"

"Yes, I see it."

Your sister is most fascinated by the slowpokes that roam and lounge through the little town. The dumb looking creatures never fail to illicit laughter and smiles, yet it's never really at their expense. Cutter takes you to the pokecenter first, where a cop is waiting to take a statement.

"You again. You have a knack for getting into trouble." It's the same cop from before. You explain the situation, the assault, and he writes everything down in his notebook. You omit the part about Yamauchi and Franky. Something tells you it wouldn't be wise to talk about that to the cops. "So they followed for the money you were carrying?"

"That's right."

"And these were winnings from the gym?"

"You have the trainer card right there. Look at the stamp on the back."

He doesn't bother to look, but just slides back your card. "Where's the machoke?"

You hand him the pokeball with the machoke. "And there's a sneasel out there too--stolen probably. Here's the registered ball."

"We'll need to keep these as evidence. And you'll need to stay in town a while, at least until Mr. Shelly wakes up."

"Mr. Shelly?"

"That would be the gentleman you said was thrown by the other gentleman's machoke--in a confused state."

"And how long will that take?"

"It'll take as long as it takes."

"Doctor said a few days, maybe a week." Adds Cutter. That shouldn't cut into your schedule too much, though you want to search for Franky as soon as this business is settled. With the 4 grand generously donated from the SMC, that brings your funds to around 8 thousand. Another six thousand from the gym. You'll still need to win another badge to get the rest.

But once Gordon gets back to his boss...what if they go after Mr. Yamauchi? No, that wouldn't look too good for the trial. But Mr. Zinnai and the rest of the undergrounders, they're open season and no one will care if they're shipped off to Cinnabar to dig through rubble for the rest of their lives.

The cellphone in your pocket begins to ring. It's the unlisted number.

>Let it go to voicemail

I think that'll be all for now (and for this thread). I'm gonna start a new one when we continue.

Thanks for playing my quest, hope everybody is having fun.

Luke probably idolized Giovanni to some degree didn't he?

Therefore I propose we talk to the fucker in our best try at imitating the pants-shitting Giovanni Voice™
>>
Also could we accuse them of more crimes?
Like:
They tried to kidnap and/or hurt our sister(true) but also the guy who got away was gonna rape her or worse(false)
But it'd be our word against theirs and we aren't the one with a stolen pokeball amirite

Just to be super petty and something we can get away with I think

>Right after QM writes about how the protag deliberately does not clue in the cop to how shady this situation really is and claims this was just a random robbery, people want to put Mr mafia ceo on speaker phone, right in front of him.

Ok.
>>
>>3388165
Technically on phone can be anyone. But if it is mafia boss and we can make him drop his name and the threthen us well we would be set right? We could save our friend and probably even wouldn't have to save that 20k for the other guy.

I agree with these!
Aerodactyl or Skarmory would be ideal for battle and flying to and fro.
Would like to get a Charmander though.... Call it Zardchari and we get a Charizard in Charmeleon Red instead of Orange!

I would recommend getting a Chansey too.... Healing capabilities between Pokecentres is a must!

A Misdreavious would be good too.

We should not forget we still have store credit at that thrift shop either.

We still need Fishing gear after all.
Could we place a purchase order on the phone and get it deliveted to us here?

Sad we avoided the Fair.
Sis would have loved it and I bet there were contests and games booths we could have won prizes on....

We definately should get that Oddish to be a Bellosom.... A waste otherwise.

I agree most grass in gen 2 are lacking but we can use fluff aspects remember.
So a Tangela with all those vine tentacles would be great for capturing and restraining both Pokemon and Human opponents, also could help providing rope to go up and down cliffs, trees, holes in the ground etc.....

I agree we should get a Ditto.
We could wear it like a Venom Symbiote Suit, both shapeshifting clothes as well as armour, weapons and a lot of utility all in one.
Should get one for our Sister too.
Would keep us both warm at night too.
Also can mimic human form if we need to have minions/back up.... or just a human shaped sister sitter if we need to be elsewhere.
>>
>>3388174
I think if we did the fair, the mafia guys would have caught us and we'd be in some deep shit
>>
>>3388174

They (The Mafia) generally prefer not to do stuff in front of lots of witnesses..... Has to be a very high profile target like a Politician etc to do that, even when they do commit to such sn action they plan meticulously or outsource to a "Professional".
