You greet the sunrise with a smile, wiping the sweat from your brow. As long tendrils of light creep over the village walls your set the Terra Disruptor against your shoulder, looking over your handiwork. A sizable portion of your training field has been gutted and solidified, sturdy stone foundations now anchored with loops and spikes of stone to the underlying bedrock. The start of the new expansion for your workshop—rooms of your own, and a meditation chamber for better honing one's inner spirit are the current project.

“Working fast, Osyki.” Amal manifests in a blur of alien runes over your shoulder. The rotating prism pulses with inner light, the fractal reflections of his depths spiraling in crazed patterns. “Now you just need some lumber and iron.”

“And about a week of back-breaking work,” you remind him. “Even with the Atlas Pauldrons and the Bolide, there's only so many places my hands can be.”

“I should think the village would be happy to assist with this project. You've certainly made their lives easier.”

It's true. A glance to the thoroughfare that winds past your workshop displays clear evidence of your handiwork. A cobblestone path limned with runes puts a visible spring in the step of the miners as they make their way toward the north of the village, contrails of light following their legs as your Quickstep totems speed them on their way. The ring of iron on iron rings out as Merich fires the forge for the day, and you can faintly make out an irridescent ripple in the air above the walls where the Slayers patrol.

“It's a good start,” you concede. “But we have a long way to go.”

Amal bobs his agreement in the air beside you. It's been a long journey, but you're only just getting started.

When the sun has climbed high enough into the sky to call the time 'morning' with any solidity you set your tools aside and return to the innards of the workshop. Terra snores quietly in the bed at the corner, her Salamander curled around her feet and glowing with quiet heat. In the hammock strung across the far corner of the workshop Quinn stirs. Cirr, his Cloud Swallow, nests comfortably in the rafters above him. The air is warm and still, a comfortable moment excised from time.

You shatter that peace by throwing the curtains aside, eliciting a chorus of groans from your apprentices. The sun reflects off of the massive horn trophy perched over the mantlepiece directly into the center of the room.

“Rise and shine!” you proclaim. “The sun's up, and so should you be.”

“Why are you like this?” Quinn mutters, throwing an arm over his eyes.

“Blame Ayren!” you reply perhaps a touch -too- energetically. “Up and at 'em. Quinn, once you're done with breakfast I need you to head out to the logger's camp and get an estimate for the lumber we need.”

He groans an affirmative reply, slowly extricating himself from the mesh hammock.

“Terra, you're on errands today. Check in with the foreman in the mine on the shipment I requested, then stop by the forge and see if Merich would be willing to assist with raising the struts and frame for the library extension.”

“'Kay,” she mutters, shoving the Salamander off the end of the bed with an errant kick. It releases a cloud of smoke, scurrying into the hearth to escape any further flying limbs.

“What about you, Osyki?” Quinn glances your way as he pulls a shirt over his head. “What's your plan for today?”

You put a hand to your chin. What is the plan today?

> Pursue one of Ayren's trials—enshrining a guardian or binding a land guardian.
> Today's the day: bring Elana to the first seal to unlock her latent power.
> Find Sylviannis and work on gathering materials for the Tyrant-slayer.
> Exploring! Fast-travel to Eluneia and push the borders of your map.
> Write-in.

You are Osyki, journeyman Totemist and first line of defense for your village against the rabid Behemoths wandering the land. Your master, the previous Totemist, fell in a battle against a terrible Behemoth, leaving the duty of defending your settlement to you. After a period of downtime reinforcing your village and expanding your workshop, you turn to the task at hand: progressing your skills as a Totemist.

You kick the toe of your boot against the cabinet, dislodging a clump of dirt. The view through the workshop window offers a glimpse of the village wall and the Slayers patrolling atop it.

“If I'm ever going to get you two back on track without throwing myself into the jaws of a Behemoth I need to keep popping open those drawers,” you tell Quinn. “I'm holding out hope that Ayren left the Vital Spark he used to initiate me in one of them.”

“You think?” Quinn scratches his chin thoughtfully, looking to the library's door. “Do those things ever, like, run out? Do they go bad?”

“Eventually,” you nod. Terra scrambles up onto the counter beside you, handing you an apple. You plant a hand on her mop of copper hair, ruffling it affectionately. “Hopefully this one's still kicking, though. Otherwise I've got an appointment to make the world's largest pair of scale boots.”

Quinn nods grimly. As he laces up his boots, he whistles sharply. Cirr descends from the rafters to perch on his shoulders.

“So what's the next big ticket item? You said you had two translated and waiting to be unlocked, right?”

You nod. “Enshrine a village guardian or Bind a Land Guardian.” You don't bother mentioning the Gates of Mu project—that one seems a little more long term, although with the scroll Zahn lent to you, you could certainly make a start on it.

“Is that all?” Quinn rolls his eyes. “Sure you don't need to do something a little easier like leveling the Ikrins or swimming across the ocean while you're at it?”

“I mean, we've got a couple drawers to go.” You roll a shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. “I've been toying with potential guardians for a while. Thought about getting an Avatar or snagging a Rock Turtle spirit—or maybe a drake?” You hum noncommittally. “Lots of options.”

Terra holds up her Salamander, hands hooking under one of the six pairs of legs to thrust the glowing spirit into your face. “I think you should get somethin' friendly like this,” she says. “People gotta like the Guardian or they won't make offerings to it.” He squeezes the fire spirit tight to her chest. The spaces between its scales glow with an affectionate warmth.

Quinn shakes his head. “People will like the Guardian because it keeps them safe from things like that Magus splinter. It doesn't need to be cuddly.”

Terra sticks her tongue out at him. A moment later the Salamander mimics the motion, exhaling a cloud of soot.

“Enough.” You hold up a hand, forestalling whatever childish retaliation Quinn may have been winding up for. He slowly lowers his arms, looking put out. “I'll figure it out. You two had better get going. Errands aren't going to run themselves.”

“I guess,” Quinn says with a sigh. “You just be sure to get that spark soon. I signed up to be a Totemist, not an errand-boy. I could be doing that for Walther just fine.”

“At least I don't smell like the compost heap after the harvest festival,” you counter.

He's right, though—you need to focus your efforts. Your fingers curl around the Whirlpool Pearl hanging from your neck as you ponder your options. Where to begin?

> Focus on enshrining a guardian. You'll need to do some research on the process and make a decision on what you want watching over Grisoch.
> Focus on making a binding with a Land Guardian. Sylvia and the Mother are both on friendly terms with you, and a Celestial Binding with them would be a huge power boost.
> Focus on unlocking the Gates of Mu. While it's a longer-term project, it has the highest potential pay-off agnostic of whatever is in the drawers.

As you so frequently do when feeling lost or in over your head, you reach out to Boand. The Whirlpool Pearl's nacre seems to spark with spiritual energy for a moment. The world blue-shifts around you, your apprentices moving as if through molasses as your perception of time slows to a crawl. A splash alerts you to her entrance. You turn to see a river snake out of your hearth, the glowing borders of the deluge tracing the perimeter of the workshop before pooling before you. A manicured hand emerges, followed shortly by Boand on a column of water.

“Is this entrance strictly necessary?” you glance up at her as she reclines on the fountain spray of springwater, examining her nails.

“Always,” she says. “And as if you're one to talk.” She flashes you a grin, slipping off of the column of water and landing on a pair of very human legs in the workshop beside you. “What's going on? Everything alright?”

You nod. “As alright as I've been for a while, actually. I wanted to get your opinion about my next heading.”

She wrinkles her nose. “I'd prefer these little consultations be in person, you know. I don't mind when you're abroad but you're three lightning-kicks from landing in my spring.”

“If I'm going to be trawling Ayren's library I don't want to have to towel off,” you counter. “I've been giving some thought to either enshrining a proper guardian for Grisoch or trying my hand at a pact with a Land Guardian. Which do you think is the better move for me?”

She leans against the counter beside you, flicking her waves of long blue hair over one shoulder. She's taken to wearing a simple seashell-based outfit when walking amongst the village, a decision that's been deeply divisive between the menfolk and their wives. She adjusts one of the straps of her skirt absentmindedly as she ruminates.

“The village needs a guardian,” she decides. “And you're not skilled enough with Celestial Bindings yet. If you tried to make a deal with Sylvia or swamp-tits,” she gestures vaguely southwardly, “you'd get taken for a ride. You just don't know enough of the lingo to write a proper contract. Even Sylvia's not going to hold your hand through a negotiation like that. You're honestly lucky I've got such a soft spot for you, or I'd have written some steeper stipulations into ours.”
>>
>>3395581

You don't like the thought of the Mother of the Swamp having you at her beck and call. “Reasonable,” you agree. You take another bite of your apple, chewing thoughtfully. “Any thoughts on what to enshrine?”

“Most settlements I've heard about have some kind of animal as their guardian. The process of enshrining a spirit lends it a modicum of intelligence from the sheer surge of spiritual power it receives, so don't worry about it being a sparkling conversationalist like myself.” She snickers. “Just make sure the core concepts of the spirit align with what you want for the village. It's not just a matter of defense, right? The spiritual ley-lines of the area will shift to match the spirit you enshrine. So, for example, if I was the village's guardian everyone would slowly become more predisposed to being breathtakingly beautiful and shockingly intelligent.”

“And humble,” you add. “Don't forget humble.”

“Naturally,” she confirms. “Unfortunately I'm not really interested in getting bound up to a land-locked village, but I'm sure you can find someone that rates second-best.”

While Boand giggles incessantly to herself, you mull over your options.

You snap your fingers. “Alright. No sense half-assing this. If Grisoch's going to be safe while I'm away I need something above the usual power curve to keep an eye on things while I'm away.”

Boand eyes you curiously, long lashes fluttering with sparks of cerulean power. “Oh? What did you have in mind?”

“Saeri gave me a ritual—the one I used to locate the Avatar of Hunger.” Your arm twinges as you think of the Eternal Maw's smoky quartzite form in your pack. “I know that none of the avatars around this region would really make suitable role models, but if I travel to Eluneia and perform the ritual on the plains there maybe I can find something—someone—worthy of watching over the village.”

“That's a lot to gamble. What if you don't find anything suitable?” Boand quirks a shaped aquamarine brow. “Doesn't that ritual require something of you?”

It's true—every divination requires a sacrifice of knowledge to the greater spirit of secrets and mysteries. Your last divination walled you from easily learning about the ocean and its inhabitants. However...

“It's worth the risk,” you decide, hammering a fist into your open palm.

“Huh?” Quinn glances over to you. “What is, Osyki?”

The world has snapped back into motion, Boand nowhere to be seen in the space between breaths. Perhaps she was distracted, or ran out of whatever pool of energy she uses to project herself? You're not really clear on how that process works. You pat Quinn on the shoulder as you pass him, headed for the door.

“Nothing. I'm heading out—traveling to Eluneia. Hopefully I'll be back before supper.”

Quinn offers you a lazy salute. “Whatever you say, boss. Be safe out there.”

If only.

You glance around the village-- the early morning hustle and bustle, the smell of baking bread and burning wood intermingling in the autumn air. The harvest festival is just around the corner. With any luck you'll have the guardian enshrined to receive an inaugural offering by then.

Forming a seal in the air, you tap into the totem leagues away, nestled in a disused closet inside your Eluneian guest home. The air peels back life the skin of an overripe fruit around you, and the gray fog of the Mists rush out to snatch you up.

Your trek through the streets of Eluneia is short, made shorter by the perennial presence of Cloudwalker's Stride dwelling in your boots. Jagging between the streets in lines and columns of lighting you make your way from your guest home to the gate in only a few minutes. The guards have been briefed on your antics—no cries of alarm ring out from the sentries, no siege ballista are turned toward you—but they don't seem amused to see you bounding from rooftop to rooftop either. You'd think they would be used to this with the Hawk pulling this antics nightly.

Somesaulting through the open portcullis of the city's entrance, you find yourself on the Alastacian plains. In the distance, the silver-blue ribbon of Boand's new river winds its way across the sloping dales. You make a safe distance from the city—a mile, maybe two—before stopping to set up shop for your ritual. No need to make the guards any tenser.

A swipe of the Terra Disruptor turns a gently rolling slope into a flat dirt plane. You tamp down the earth as best you can with a few more downward swings of the elemental shovel, then set to work. Using the tip of your spear you sketch the interlocking arcane sigils and circles of the ritual into the soft loam.

Every great work requires sacrifice. Your divination is no different—you fish around in your pack until you retrieve the fuel that will allow you to contact the greater spirit of secrets and mystery. The book is titled:

Diarca, I've been reading this quest for years, and I have had the good fortune to participate in a few threads. The story, the characters, the worldbuilding, the spirit mechanics, it's one of my absolute favorites in the archives. A number of quests over the years have gone on hiatus or vanished altogether, and of all of them, this is the one I had sincerely hoped would one day return.

I cannot express how amazed and happy I am to see this here today.

It is so very, very wonderful to have you back, and I can't wait to see what you have in store.

I'm lucky to be in a position where I can return to keep telling this story with all of you. I'm excited to see where the road takes us.

The Riven Road. A book on the passageways that exist deep beneath the world's shell, where the Court of Earth holds sway. A voice in the back of your head wonders if sacrificing knowledge of things that lie deep beneath might come back to bite you at some point—first beneath the waves, and now knowledge of that which lurks beneath the ground. Still, if you need intel you can always pick the Iron General's braincase for horrors that lurk deep beneath the earth's crust. Surely, nothing about this ritual will prevent knowledge already held from being imparted unto you.

Right?

You wrap the book in cloth and bind the bundle into an oiled leather pack. You bury the package in the center of the ritual circle, then perch cross-legged atop the earthen mound. With Modi Magni's spear across your lap, you close your eyes and concentrate. Eyes closed tight, stiff postured, palms together in front of your chest., you breathe in deeply, turning the incantation over in your mind. You never did get a chance to translate it from whatever language the Iron General originally discovered itin, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Quicksilver light bleeds from your aura, painting the ritual markings in broad strokes of argent luminescence.

The air around you grows dim, the light of the mid-morning sun overhead made weak and faint by some unknown presence. The smell of old paper and aged leather, the sound of rustling pages and hushed whispers—a cavalcade of strange sensations overtake your perception as the world outside of the circle smears away, an oily blur of color shrouded by fog. Something paces the perimeter of the circle, its footfalls leaving taloned indentations in the loamy soil.

You proffer Modi Magni's spear, as you did once before a few weeks ago. The air grows charged as the presence takes note of your offering.

The ritual circle revolves beneath your feet, the interlocking circles turning like cogs in some vast machine. The indicating needles swing wildly as the essence of the incantation locks on to Modi Magni's essence, using like to search out like far and wide.

The circle beneath your feet positively bristles with matches. Arrows of every shape and size explode from the wheel where you stand, a sunburst of knowledge erupting outward in every direction. Your eyes scan the needles as they sway wildly to and fro: Despair, Fury, Isolation, Vengeance. The majority of the signatures seem to be focused to the southwest. You recall someone telling you that the Twil, the border canyon between Eluneia and Asolaria, lies in that direction.

But there—there, shifting between the flood of pained avatars, darting between the like of the dormant maw simmering within your rucksack—you see it.

A pair of perfect candidates.

You sweep your arms to either side and the swarm of negative avatars split neatly around the twin beacons. One to the west, and one to the southwest: Hope and Faith.

Either could suit your needs. But which one to pursue? The remainder of your results buzz around you like hornets, each vying for your attention as it sweeps across the surface of the ritual plane.

> Head west across the plains to find the Avatar of Hope. Grisoch will be built on a better tomorrow.
> Head southwest into the Twil to find the Avatar of Faith. You can't imagine how much every spirit around the village will benefit from its presence.
> Look for another avatar in the swarm—maybe something like Fury could make for a suitable guardian.

Every action that leads to greatness is made with hope - hope that the world can be made better than it already is. It is the light that banishes the darkness of despair, the last beacon remaining when all other lights go out, and the magic spark that transforms inevitable defeat into overwhelming victory.

It feels a little strange to be removing a good Avatar from the world. I wonder if a non-Feral binding would be possible. I don't think Avatars are intelligent enough for that, but we don't actually know.

Boots : Cloudwalker's Stride
Bow : Ravening Bolt
Armor: Gnome's Garb
Cloak: Edge of Dawn
Gloves :Twin Din
Mirror: Ripple
Mask : Moth's Second Face
Pants : Velociraptor Greaves
Rope : Shade Coil
Shirt : Tyrant's Tabard
Sword: [Siren's Heart]
Key : Static State
Fruit: [Basilisk]
Bracelet: [Control Rod]

Not all of these are required, they all have the potential to be useful. I tried to squeeze just about everything in somewhere.

We need to do more experiments with the Siren Heart and Basilisk. For such a potent Focuses, we know very few of their binds.

You glance through the remaining two-dozen odd needles gyrating across the surface of the symbolic compass, but you know in your heart what the true choice is. From the moment you took up the mantle, picked up your spear, and threw yourself into that Rock Turtle nest, your entire occupation has been predicated on one ideal: hope. Hope for survival. Hope for another, a better tomorrow.

You whirl Modi Magni's spear through the air and tap the tip of the blade to the west-most needle. The world winds itself around you again like a coiling snake, the foggy border of the ritual dispelled as your choice is made.

West, then. Terra and Quinn are counting on you.

Even as the ritual fades, you still retain as sense of direction toward that distant star. You can see it in your mind's eye, a distant beacon sitting atop the horizon. Your shadow almost seems to be stretching toward it in the mid-morning light.

With Eluneia on your right you begin your journey across the Alastacian plains. You can see that a number of roads stretch outward from Eluneia, carving wide crescents through the hills and valleys. With each skyward bound, as the landscape below curves away from you, you can see the indication of further settlement on the horizon—outlying villages and towns clustered around Eluneia, perched atop hills behind heavy wooden pallisades not dissimilar to Grisoch's ringed defenses.

“How goes the search?” Boand's voice rings through the Whirlpool Pearl.

“Better than expected,” you mutter, turning your face against the wind to speak clearly into the sphere. “Got a fix on a likely candidate west of Eluneia. What do you know about the area?”

”West of the capital? Not much, unfortunately. I can make a few calls—a friend of mine inhabits a lake a little ways west of my stretch of the river there. I think there are some old ruins out that way?

Old ruins? You wrinkle your nose. The only ruins you've encountered have been evidence of the first civilization—the shrine below the mines and the strange flooded palace off the coast. You remember what Zahn said to you: 'This world is young.' How old could they be?

“Noted,” you mutter. “Get back to me when you get some details.”

As part of an ongoing systems revamp, Osyki will currently be limited to 10 concurrent bindings. That limit can be increased with training or artifacts.

Even with your superpowered leaping strides, the plains of Alasatcia are broad. An hour passes with little interruption as you hurtle over vales and valleys, spring between roads as settlements watch you from distant hilltops. You catch sight of a few packs moving in the distance—herd animals, or maybe some kind of plains wolves—but nothing seems willing or able to keep pace with you.

Near noon you can feel your destination growing closer. Your legs ache from the exertion of repeatedly leaping—even if the Stride stops your shins from exploding through your kneecaps with every jarring landing, it still takes effort to propel you body into the air. You can see a structure perched low and squat at the edge of a lake, crumbling at the edges but still largely intact. The lake itself is broad enough that you can barely see the far side from the ground. You wonder how far you are from the ocean here?

You approach the ruin on foot—that is to say, without the aid of Cloudwalker Stride—in order to better keep a low profile. As you move closer to the lakeside you note that the ground grows sodden and muddy, the treads of your tortoise-shell boots squelching audibly against the earth. The lake itself seems to be largely devoid of vegetation around its borders, perhaps indicative of a recent surge in the shoreline. It is the rainy season, after all, and the Alastacian plains aren’t so far from Grisoch that it’s unreasonable to assume they’ve been getting the same weather patterns.

The structure itself seems to be a largely stone edifice, though here and there you can see splintered wooden supports through gaps in the masonry. Unusual script curls across the pillars supporting the entryway, eroded in places to a smooth white-gray finish. The building only looks to be one floor vertically, the roof standing approximately sixteen feet off of the ground. Your internal tether to the ritual of location tells you that the avatar lies somewhere within and slightly below.

You wrap the chain of Ripple around your hand, holding the mirror aloft like a talisman. Your other hand slowly works the Core Skewer out of its scabbard. A faint heat shimmer plays around the edge of the onyx blade, and a forge-hearth glow lights the air immediately around it.
Boand’s voice rings out from the mirror, and you turn it to reveal her smiling visage within its depths. She informs you that her contact can meet you at the lakeside. You walk a wide circle around the entrance to the ruins until the mud rises to the ankles of your boots. Standing beside the waterline, you look out over the placid surface and wait.
A few minutes later the water at the lake’s edge balloons outward. You take a step back as a dome of aqueous fluid blossoms outward. A pair of beady black eyes regard you from the swollen bell of a massive mushroom-shaped spirit, tendrils of golden metal flexing at its circumference.

“Good day,” the spirit burbles. The horned dome of its head bobs once in the water, sending a splash scattering across your boots. “Boand sas Sylviannis informed me of your arrival. Welcome to Lake Thebit.”
>>
>>3397907

You offer the strangely shaped spirit a bow in return. You’re surprised at how soft-spoken the massive creature is—perhaps a transplant from one of the Elemental Courts? “Good afternoon to you. I am the Totemist of Grisoch.” You tuck the Core Skewer into its scabbard, resting the heel of your palm atop its pommel. “What can you tell me about this structure? My sources tell me an Avatar lies within.”

The jelly dome bobs again, soaking your shoes as the waters surge their borders again. “A number of curiosities take residence in the Oubliette. As I understand it, the kingdom which once held this land before the Argent Lady first touched the soil used it as a dumping ground for inconveniences.” A tendril rises from the water, tipped with a gleaming silver spear. The entity gestures with it casually, as if it were an open palm. The blade splits with air with a faint whistling noise. “The doors opened only recently when a traveller from the east used a signet of some sort to part the defenses that once surrounded it.”

You glance toward the doors. “Has that traveller emerged from the structure since then?”

The spirit wiggles back and forth in what you assume is a negative. “Not to my knowledge. They wore a cloak of red and gold, and they seemed to know precisely where they were going. A number of strange fluctuations in the veil have occurred since they arrived.”

“And how long ago was that?”

“Just over a week ago, now.”

Interesting.

Regarding the new binding limit, we should take another look at those fruit bindings. It might be a good way to get a little more mileage out of the underpowered foci, and if the pattern holds, when they go unusable for a day it won't really matter.

You maintain eye contact with the spirit as best you can—his eyes are far enough apart that you can only reasonably look at one at a time. “What do you know about the people who built this place?”

“Oh, not a great deal, unfortunately.” The Lake Spirit swings a spear-tipped tendril through the air in a crude approximation of a shrug. “I only migrated here a scant handful of decades ago. I assume they were all dead and gone by that point, or else moved on to greener kelp beds. The veil did seem to fluctuate when that traveler dispelled the wards around the Oubliette, so they seemed to have some modicum of skill with will-working.”

The spirit further confides in you that not only did he not catch more than a glimpse of the traveler, he didn't care to invest much further in any investigation after them. “Biped concerns,” he tells you, “are among the most mundane, unimaginative problems one could possibly conceive of wrapping their tendrils up in. No offense meant, Totemist, but all the mortals of this area ever seem to care after is basic subsistence. No appreciation for true culture, you see?”

You don't, but you politely nod along with the aquatic creature's diatribe. Eventually he seems to tucker himself out, deflating slightly at the twin apexes on his crown.

“In any event, Totemist, will you need anything further?”

“No! No.” You amend yourself, trying not to sound too eager to go. “Thank you kindly for your wisdom. Pass on my regards to Boand when next you meet.”

The spirit bobs in the surf agreeably, watching you as you walk along the shoreline with all due haste -away- from that conversation and toward this 'Oubliette'.

The doors, you note as you approach the massive twinned stone edifice, are the only section of the structure that do not seem to have suffered the cruelties of time. The runes engraved into their face are as sharp and detailed as the day they were carved, gouged deep into the smooth gray-green rock without a hint of rounding or algae invading the corners. The light from the Alastacian plains seems to fail a few feet from the threshold, swallowed up by some inexorable darkness that wells from within.

It doesn't seem like an environment where hope could be fostered. Best you find this Avatar quickly.

The antechamber stretches back a good deal further than you expected it to. The chamber is shaped as a pair of circles roughly mashed together, two elongated ovals intersecting along one of the tangential edges. The interior is surprisingly free of dust, though you note there are occasional motes of light that seem to wink through the air for fractions of a heartbeat.

The floor is smooth, paved stone. In the center of the first ovalline chamber there is a bas relief carved into the floor, a sigil or some declaration of purpose writ large in that same looping, cyclopean text. Lamps ring the interior walls of this circle, unlit and cold behind the crystal-glass panes.

A grand double-staircase dominates the majority of the back half of the chamber. Two sweeping crescents of stone steps flank the far edge of the relief in the floor, rising to an elevated balcony above you. You can see a number of crystal shards, rough chunks of blue-white gemstone, hovering in the air ponderously above the dias far above you. A few of them seems to reflect and refract off of one another, beams of light dancing to and fro through the nebulous dark.

At the apex of the steps, on the wall behind the balcony, another door looms ominously. The way is shut, a single slab of gray-green rock solidly refusing you entry to the deeper sanctum.

Seconding. Also equip Despot's Delusion to help with negotiations. For the rest of our items, we should be prepared for combat, but we don't want to risk destroying the temple and bringing the roof down on our heads. You glance around the static, leaden air of the Oubliette's antechamber. All of the clues are here—you can feel something on the tip of your tongue, darting around your third eye. A clue. A way forward. It's just not there yet.

Fortunately, you're not alone in these endeavors.

Were one to observe the crumbling ruin from the outside, they might be forgiven for mistaking the rapid flashes of light echoing from within for a series of staggered explosions.

“In my name—“

A flash of dazzling green.

“Link the world without—“

An eruption of anti-light, shadows crawling into the cracks scattered across the floor.

“I unite the spirit and the material.”

An actinic stab of ozone.

“Grant this conduit your blessing.”

A clap of thunder.

A moment of silence.

You stand, glowing in the wake of your own spiritual tidal wave. Your raiment sheds a soft light, a light breeze sweeping the stone-plated skirt of Bulwark Aurum around your ankles.

You hold the crystal slab containing Amal's spirit aloft, focusing it on the floor. Arcane runes swirl in parabolas of sacred geometry. Amal sorts through an era's worth of literary reference and codified linguistics in the span of moments it takes you to draw a single breath. Lines of light etch a summary of the text into the Grimoire, overlapping the runes on the floor in perfect synchronicity. Not a direct translation—only the gist.

A declaration of warning for those who would step further within. The firstborn claim no responsibility for your safety past this point.

Fair enough. You don't name something “The Oubliette” to make it sound welcoming for visiting dignitaries.

You take a moment to steady yourself. Pushing the crystal bridge of Aria Nymph up your nose, you concentrate on wrenching open your third eye. Boand's soothing melody reflects through the fractal lattice of the mask's structure, lending invisible aid to your concentration. You can almost feel her manicured fingertips kneading into your temples, drawing forth the power within.

”There.”

> 91

The world floods with color around you—a prisonscape writ in luminous green. Flickering chains of spiritual power spring from the floating crystals overhead, knotted and braided through one another. Their points spear into equidistant markers around the seal underfoot and the door far above, linking the two inexorably with sympathetic power.

The crystals sparkling overhead pulse with a power at once familiar and wholly alien—a coruscating witchfire painted in shades of deep crimson and ivory swirls just beneath the surface. An eidolon's flame. Last you encountered it, it was searing flesh from bone in the depths of Azeo Sicros.

You imagine if what the Lake Spirit told you was accurate, some sort of seal or signet is needed to press in further legitimately. Unfortunately you're lacking in official paperwork—which isn't to say that you don't have a few badges of office to call your own. But which one to present?

Let's give it a shot to start with.

From what I remember, a Feral Bind is Totemist only. I don't remember the rules for Celestial, but binds like ours to Amal or Terra to her Salamander weren't restricted.

How much of this has actually been done?
>>3400428
Depends on your definition, but I guess so in a classical sense.
>>
>>3400474
Shit, it seems like actually getting the chump to bind is one of the last steps, unless we already broached the subject with Sylviannis and just never got around to it?

Because while it's unlikely that she'll disapprove of this Avatar if we manage to nab it, it's also not impossible.
>>
You don't imagine introducing a Greater Avatar of Wrath or—well, whatever the hell Caethos is—is going to get you a warm reception to the Oubliette's sanctum. It's not that you don't trust the mirror titan's winning charm. You just want to keep your options open.

You pluck the Aria Nymph from your mask, holding the crystal domino forward. You use the mask as a prism, splitting narrow beams of quicksilver energy from your aura and focusing them through the mask into the seal affixed to the floor. Rays of cerulean energy rake across the circular impression, searching and probing for a weakness. A lock to fit a key to.

As if from a great distance, you can hears Boand's voice begin to sing in hymnal tones.

The churning eidolon fire in the crystals surges as the Aria Nymph lives up to her name. Spools of celestial text unfurl from the eyeholes of the mask, spilling outward to wrap in tight spirals around the links that tie the sealing stones to the portal above. Piece by piece the walls around you crumble away. Long, thin lines of stone fall away to reveal pulsing, null-aspected crystal in dizzying geometric arrays across the walls, the ceiling, the stairs.

You narrow your gaze, fingers splaying out to dance across the strings of the great instrument that this room has become. Boand's gentle touch guides your motions as you send streamers tracing outward from your aura to overlap and overlay the spiritual circuit around you. The two of you move in concert, connected by the ethereal bridge of the soul.

When you were training with Ayren, he hammered the danger of the Totemist's art into your skull with steel and his own two fists. The unbridled fury of a Behemoth, the insidious corruption of elemental imbalance. The frailty, the mortality of man.

When it comes down to it, though, you're pretty sure things like this are what the job is all about.

One by one the crystals overhead align into orbit, a confluence of celestial activity played out in puppet-effigy by the rotating crystals spires. The walls hum with quiet energy. Hovering above the great seal your mask crackles with incandescent power.

You pluck it from the center of the maelstrom and replace it atop the bridge of your nose. Your essence ties itself to this place, and something audibly clicks.

The door at the top of the stairs swings open.

The door behind you slams shut.

Dropped my trip.

> [[The Oubliette of the Firstborn]]

The world shifts into alignment to match the crystal planetoids above you, and you become aware all at once that you have stepped across the bounds of material reality and into the Mists.

When you ascend the radiant crystal-limned stairs and glance through the secondary threshold it helps to justify the spectacle.

The doorway opens up to overlook an abyss. The floor simply drops away, lit from below by a strange, eerie half-light painted in hues of violet and magenta. It's as if you've stepped out of the side of a mountain, looking out into a night sky lit by an otherworldly aurora. Dancing through the abyss are a swarm of stone platforms, a buzzing hornet's nest that fights to cohere into an ordered shape. As you look on walkways latch together with flares of shimmering light, pathways that tesselate together to form hallways. Stone constructs snap together into rooms, doors, staircases and ramps before your very eyes. Whatever process Boand guided you through seems to have prompted the Oubliette to reconfigure itself. But is it for your convenience, or to your detriment?

Narrow strips of stone have already begun to cohere into a pathway before you. If you wait for the mechanisms that power this place to spool up, you'll likely be able to explore the Oubliette as intended—walking amongst the stone edifices and exploring vaulted tunnels.

Or, you reason, you could hurl yourself into the abyss now, before the structures have a chance to box you in, and attempt to take the most direct route from outside the confines of the normal structure. You do lack Cloudwalker Stride—you'll need to rely largely on you own strength to propel you from floating platform to platform.

You bite your lip, weighing the options.

> Falling into that shimmering abyss is a death sentence at best. Allow the hallways to connect to the threshold and proceed into the tunnels.
> Leap out of the doorway before the hallways can connect and attempt to leap, crawl, and maneuver along the outside boundaries of the stone structure.

For once, patience wins out. With the added guarantee of Cloudwalker assisting your bounding strides you don’t fancy your chances hurtling over that half-lit chasm. Hanging back and watching from the doorway, you do gain the benefit of seeing the rough configuration of the structure’s layout; it looks like a three-tiered affair. The hallway that snakes out to connect to the threshold with a resounding -click- looks to be at the top of that arrangement. Unfortunately, with the way the hallways snake together in their constantly shifting dance that’s the extent of the intelligence you’re able to glean about the layout before your view is obscured.

As the hallway meant to grant you entry docks with the antechamber you can see the crystalline veins of energy bleed into the newly attached superstructure. Nodes of shimmering crystal flicker to life in the walls of the hallway, bleeding shifting half-light in shades of blue and gray. You draw the Core Skewer and raise Resonata to a ready position as you step foot into the Oubliette proper. You’re not quite sure what to expect out of a Firstborn structure.

“Boand,” you mutter quietly as you advance to the first bend in the passageway. “What do you know about the Firstborn?”

-”Precious little, unfortunately.”- she replies in the back of your mind. -”There are traces of civilizations before the current era scattered around Grisoch in the Ikrins and dotted across Alastacia, but they’re usually sealed up tight. You’d probably have better luck asking Zahn about them. If what you told me about him is true, he’s probably one of them.”-

A shame that you can’t pick the First’s brain as easily as you can Boand’s. Something to amend eventually, perhaps. You recall the story Hesheza wove for you on your first visit to Azeo Sicros. The founding of the pact. The first hunt. But how long ago…?
>>
>>3401132

The hallway quickly splits into three wider passageways, each labeled with a burning rune of eidolon flame. A swipe with Amal’s Grimoire reveals the sigils to be ‘Cage’, ‘Disposal’, and perhaps most curiously, ‘Center’. You reference your internal compass, and find to your surprise and delight that the ritual from the material still holds firm here—you can feel the gentle pulse of Hope’s beacon below you. Unfortunately it doesn’t provide you with much more of a heading than ‘down’.

“Amal? Suggestions?”

The crystal slate at your hip buzzes audibly before disgorging a tiny replica of your pyramid companion. “I don’t imagine anything is going to be waiting for us in ‘Disposal’ that we’re keen to meet. Check the Cage, I’d say.”
You doubt if you’ll be that lucky, but heeding his words you head down the leftmost path.

The architecture shifts dramatically as you proceed down the branch. The gray-green stone is striated further with angular lines of light. The lamps of rough, unworked crystal are replaced by glowing circular nodes in the wall, spilling light in even intervals as the ceiling vaults high overhead. The hallways snakes left and slopes slightly downward, sets of three and five stairs interrupting the otherwise flawless path. Every so often one of those nodules is replaced by a transparent window, affording you a glance at the misty aurora outside.

Your third eye aches with the spiritual presence packed everpresent into every inch of masonry. The temptation is strong to allow your sixth sense to close, a moment of respite from the blinding energy around you.

The hallway terminates abruptly in a closed archway. The structure is less a doorway and more an aperture, a set of smooth stone crescents that overlap to bar your path. A fragment of the seal of the Firstborn is engraved into each shard in such a way that the closed aperture forms a seamless whole of the symbol.

A close examination of the Firstborn seal with the Grimoire reveals no discernable difference from the one inscribed in the antechamber floor. You run your fingers experimentally along the edge of the doorframe, searching for a catch or trigger to depress. The stone is smooth and unyielding, less cold than you expect it to be, and utterly devoid of any mechanical trigger. You narrow your eyes, scanning the plates of the aperture. You suppose any civilization adept enough to create a space within the Mists probably wouldn’t rely on a physical trigger, but there must be some kind of failsafe in cases of emergency. Maybe on the stone sigil itself…?

> 76 [vs. DC 80: Extremely Difficult. Failure.]

As your fingers graze the surface of the emblem itself, the doors shudder in response. You curse under your breath as the spiral of the door unfolds with a weighty grinding sound, lights flaring bright overhead. As the stone vanes retract you can see the room beyond in brief through the circular portal left behind—a tall room with a spiraling stone structure in the center, roughly rectangular and longer than it is wide. The walls are flanked by columns, and perched in between each pair of stone pillars…

The roar of oxygen greedily consumed fills your ears. You hurl yourself to one side as a screaming lance of bronze flame fills the space that your head just occupied. The plates of Bulwark Aurum flare beneath you, sending you skidding across the floor three inches above the surface of the hallway. You throw out a hand to steady yourself on the far wall, the crystal plate of Resonata humming gently from the impact—

The next projectile to fly through the door is a long blade of obsidian. It hurtles the gap so fast your eyes scarcely have time to register it before it rebounds wildly off of your armor. The blade itself shatters, but several razor shards embed themselves inches deep into the hexagonal plates of your armor. You flinch as the spray rebounds off of Aria Nymph, scratching and chipping at the crystal surface.

The eidolon—or so you assume, a faceless thing of black stone and roiling crimson energy—ducks its shoulders to step through the door. One of its arms ends in a jagged obsidian blade, the stone already snaking outward the replace the projectile it fired at you. The other limb is wreathed in hideously crackling fire. Talons dig into the stone underfoot as it squares its shoulders, readying itself to spring.

A glance past the automaton reveals two more foes loosing themselves from their plinths nestled between the pillars of the next room.
>>
>>3401719
The eidolon leaps, but this time you are ready to meet it. The chitin edge of the Core Skewer flashes up as the obsidian terror leaps across the distance between you. The hooked spike at the forward pommel of your blade sends your foe’s stab lancing -past- your shoulder, rather than through it. It lands heavily, almost on top of you, and swings the limb wreathed in a metallic conflagration toward you.

Still off-balance, you cannot interpose the Skewer in time. Resonata comes up instead, and you concentrate to bring the Blessing of the Elder Turtle to bear. The latter proves a hair too slow, the spiritfire claw punching a hole straight through the nascent barrier before it can come to fruition with a resounding -CRACK-. Your buckler absorbs the brunt of the blow, ringing like a struck gong. The force of the blow drives you off of your feet, sending you careening down the hall you trod so carefully only a few moments ago. Bulwark Aurum’s power flares again before you hit the ground, turning a ruinous crash into a long slide on a cushion of air down the length of the stone path. Tongues of the eidolon’s flame dance along the arm of your armor, hissing and crackling malevolently as they blacken the turtle-shell armor by inches.

The eidolon advances, bringing the obsidian edge of its arm up to draw a bead on you. You roll backward, landing on your feet with your blade in hand. Quarters are tight in the hallway, barely wide enough to skirt the bulk of the automaton. If you could get past it into the room you would have more room to breathe—but another pair of foes to contend with besides. Your arm still aches with the force of the deflected blow, and you can feel points of obsidian digging into your ribs with every breath. Resonata’s power thrums through you, the power of a Plate Wurm spilling through your limbs.

The strips of glowing crystal in the walls wax with visceral crimson light. The eidolon fires another jagged obsidian lance.

Dammit, these are constructs. Core Skewer works best with organic enemies, it's way less effective against these things.

Thanks to Resonanta, though, we have some stored power at the moment. Dodge the spear and charge forward, using Seneschal's Step and Bulwark Aurum to move unpredictably, then start hacking away with Core Skewer. With the Atlas Pauldrons, we have way higher strength than normal, so our physical attacks should receive a boost in damage.
>>
what are the odds we could switch something out quickly without getting beat up? Because while our defense seems alright, we dont have a good offense currently on to take these guys.
If We could Put the Siren into the gloves for Fist of the Mantle, we could use the strength from Atlas Pauldrons to grapple and punch them without worrying about the fire...

Actually, Scratch this, We'll just have to make due with what we have.
Lets use Boand's boost to our perception to look for a weakness in these thing's contruction, and use the increased mobility from Seneschal Step , Bulwark, and Resonata while parrying with the Core Skewer to manipulate them into a good position, or attacking each other if possible. When we get an opening, Eaither break off or catch one of those Obsidian blades to use, or use our strength to hit one of these fools with one of these other fools.

We're at 9/10 bindings. The only way I see binding as fast enough is if we only have to go through 1 binding, so one of the unbound foci to something currently unbound.
Fourth is open. We could go for The Empty Bottle, or a knife, amulet, bracelet, fruit, mirror, rope, crossbow, or whatever else we might have on us.

The Osyki of a handful of moments past would have taken that obsidian lance through the skull, bone and viscera splitting like an overripe fruit against the peerless edge of that stone blade. The splatter of his final moments would have coated the walls of this otherwise pristine mausoleum of the Firstborn, a messy tracework of viscera spelling an ignoble end to a long lineage of proud Totemistry in streamers of carmine and gray matter.

Fortunately, you are not that Osyki. Resonata hums at your wrist.

The lance misses you by inches. You pull the potential energy from the crystal disc, converting it into a burst of speed as you duck into an impossibly low splits. The Seneschal's Step allows you a feat of contortion that would snap tendons under ordinary circumstances. Your thighs hit the deck as the lance whistles past your crown, shattering into jagged shrapnel against the hallway floor behind you.

You're already on the move. Rolling out of your impromptu display of acrobatics, you engage Bulwark Aurum's air cushion and slide forward. The lead eidolon swipes at you with a flame-wreathed claw, but the Skewer flickers up in your grasp to bat it aside. You can see the chitin edge of your blade glow in response to the heat spilling across it—a shame that it's not one of a dozen other Siren binds that absorb and redirect heat. Still, sending the forty pound fist into the wall rather than your sternum is a trade you'll take any day. The crystal lenses of the Aria Nymph slide over your eyes to ward off the spray of stone chips as you analyze the eidolon's form for weakness.

The most obvious is the flickering core of witchfire at its chest, but you disregard that. Too obvious, too likely a feint to make you overextend yourself. No, better that you focus on the joints of the stone guardian—the waist where it pivots, the relatively thin shoulder and hip joints. The Atlas Pauldrons vent twin streamers of elemental energy as your arms swell with the strength of the earth.

You kick Modi Magni's spear up from the ground where it has fallen, snatching the haft with your free hand and whirling it around to sink into the Eidolon's leg joint. The construct is half a second too fast, back-stepping in time to avoid the edge of Modi Magni's wrath. The speartip buries itself in the stone floor—you twist aside, the Cobra's power allowing you to bend your spine into a side-facing arch to avoid another lancing blow with an obsidian claw blade.

The last time you fought eidolons you had the advantage of overwhelming firepower. Maybe you need something to even the odds—though you've barely scratched the surface of this prison. Resonata deflects another wild swing from the witchfire claw, sparks of that malign energy burning gouges in the ceiling overhead. You're on the backfoot, reeling but upright, pairing the Skewer and your buckler's defense with the bone-defying maneuvers the Cobra's step affords you.

Behind the first eidolon, another steps into the hallway. The walkway isn't wide enough for both of them to engage you, but it's more than enough for the backline to bring a searing bolt of bronze fire to bear. As the bolt hurtles toward you, the first eidolon snakes low, attempting to lash under your guard.

You're getting penned in, and fast. If the rear eidolons can fire over the one engaging you in melee, you're at a distinct disadvantage without room to maneuver. You bring the Core Skewer up to deflect another jabbing obsidian lance off to your left, chips of shrapnel pinging off of the heavy metal of the Atlas Pauldrons.

You need to get past this hallway. With the automaton filling the space before you horizontally, you've got no choice but to go vertical.

The disc of resonant crystal at your forearm goes still as you leech all of the remaining potential energy from Resonata.

Bulwark Aurum flares beneath you as you launch yourself forward, Modi's Spear braced beneath one arm in a vaulting charge. The eidolon brings its claws up defensively, shifting onto the backfoot in a boxer's guard as you whistle through the air toward it. Your spear isn't meant to strike home on the construct's body, though—you slam the blade of the spear into the ground and leverage your momentum, twisting up and over the black rock chassis of your foe in an acrobatic leap.

The roaring sound of another bolt of metallic flame echoes down the hallway as the rear eidolon launches an anti-aerial assault against you. No matter how you contort, you're not going to have room to dodge this one entirely—the blast is too wide, your arc of momentum too far gone. You plunge through the column of spiritflame, shielding your face with Resonata and conjuring a barrier with the Elder Turtle's power as best you can. The lance of heat batters both aside, and you land in a heap between the two constructs still smoldering.

The exposed flesh of your arms has begun to crack and blister from the heat, and the corridor is filled with the stench of burning hair. You dig Modi's spear into the ground again, this time leveraging yourself only as far as your feet. The eidolon behind you whips around, charging with lance and claw extended while the one occupying the doorway to the room before you lines up another shot.

“Modi,” you mutter, wincing as you bring Resonata to bear again. “A little help here?”

The sound of screeching metal on metal sweeps down the hallway, echoing as filaments of brass and quicksilver extrude from the haft of Modi Magni's spear. As the liquid metal winds its way into your open wounds, you can hear the hollow voice of your fiercest weapon drone dully in the back of your mind.

”Pitiful. Keep your guard up.”

> [Modi Magni Union Level 1: Weaponsmaster]

Your offhand swings the Core Skewer around at a bone-crunching angle behind your head, a contortion only made possible by the power of the Emperor Cobra. Like a marionette's puppet your blade flashes out to lock against the edge of a whisper-thin stone sword, chitin blunting the honed rock edge in a clash of sparks. You don't see your enemy recoil behind you, but you can -feel- it on the air as it winds up for another swing. You don't stick around long enough to deflect it. You're already sprinting forward, gliding on Aurum's air cushion along the wall toward the sniping eidolon.

> 45

You expect the blast of withering heat from the beast, deflecting it with a wave of Resonata as one might swat an errant fly. The obsidian lance concealed just behind it, a projectile hidden in the flare of light produced by the fire blast, catches you by surprise. It punches through the Elder Turtle's armor and the bones in your shoulder in a swift motion. It passes cleanly through your body, impacting the wall in a spray of shards. You exclaim in pain, your voice backed by a steady whine of shrieking steel as you stumble to a halt in front of the automaton occupying the doorway.

“I thought you were supposed to be a -master- of combat,” you hiss as you whip Modi's spear around, smashing another coalescing blast of flame into the wall beside you. The eidolon retreats in jerky hopping motions, making space between the two of you as it retreats into the room at the hallway's terminus. You can see the third eidolon within climbing the walls, talons of stone raking gouges into the gray stone pillars.

”Like your master before you, the vessel is flawed. I cannot craft a masterpiece with broken tools. Perhaps if you indulged more of my power, you would find a more agreeable result.”

You duck low, leeching from Resonata to avoid a flying spear of obsidian from the eidolon behind you in the hallway. It clatters against the threshold, shattering into shard the length of your forearm. Two eidolons in the room before you, one in the hallway behind. You bite your lip.

I don't really have a good understanding of the layout, but didn't the doors close behind us as we entered? I'm bit really sure where we could run to that doesn't have more of these guys.
>>
>>3404179
>>3404186
>>3404253
only way right now is forward or jumping down I believe, and I don't want to chance there being more Eidolons at the bottom.

Blitz forward and pass, but if that does actually get blocked, then sure, we try to descend as best we can

>>3404083
Get past them, we don't stand a chance against 3 at once
>>
>>3404083
I do think we probably need another boost though, either more Magni or Void Tap so we can use the regen feature later. I don't remember if we've used both at once before, and this doesn't seem like a good time to practice so my instinct is
>Activate Modi Magni Level 2: Body of War
Just because I don't think our current parameters are enough to dodge these guys, and if we boost our strength just that much more, we might be able to break these guys apart by physically overwhelming them, since we already seem to be stronger.
>>
>>3404186
>>3404179
We trapped mates, door be shut.

Is the door the came from still open? I think we could rush through there
>>
>>3404267
Get past them where though? Like one is behind us in the hallway, and two are in front of us in the room we just entered, but we have no idea what else is in the room, like if there's another exit or we need to solve a puzzle first. Also who knows when these guys will stop spawning?
>>
>>3404303
They sound similar to the guards at the Forge. If the pattern holds, they will regen on their plinth after a few days.
>>
>>3404303
I mean I guess it's possible that these guys are programmed to not leave the "cage" segment so if we turn around and vault back over the one we already leaped over and ran, they might not chase us, but I don't like those odds.
>>
>>3404324
I meant more that are these the only three guard robots or will we activate more and more the deeper we go, if deeper is something we can go since we have no idea what the structure of this place is, like if there's any potential cover or whatever.
>>
>>3404337
>>3404344
Run back where? The door slammed shut behind us

Here's what my understanding of the layout is, so at the start we could have retreated back to the antechamber or went down one of the other hallways to try to lose these guys or at least buy time to switch our bindings around, but instead we lept into this room so we'd have more room to maneuver and fight these guys. We have no idea what else is in this room besides two eidolons so the idea of running past them doesn't seem viable because we have no idea what else is in the room, whether there are any available exits at all, and if so, whether or not there's more eidolons there.

That's why I'm pretty sure we've gotta make the most of it and fight these guys.
>>
>>3404290
>>3404083
So I don't know, >Activate Body of War
>Dash to the wall with the Eidolon on it, since Bullwark Aurum and Seneschal Step should let us outmaneuver it even better than on the ground
Maybe pick up that obsidian shard behind us first to see if Magni will upgrade it?

Diarca, have we ever used Void Tap and Magni at the same time before?
>>
we don't need to flee out of the ruins, we just need to buy ourselves enough time to bind Fourth to something. Why is Thane in the bow and Fourth entirely unbound? If we can get enough time, I'd say swap thane out of the bow for fourth, but if we can only single bind the Bottle or the crossbow might suffice.
>>
>>3404511
I'm not sure why we stopped binding static state, since that was on the list and we had already had it bound, though it isn't very useful at the moment.

I guess I was worried that this place would be a lot more decrepit than it turned out to be, and if we'd go wild we'd collapse it on top of ourselves. Judging by the eidolons though, that's not something to be concerned with so my bad.
>>
>>3404511
>>3404534
Also if we do manage to gain some distance, Stalker's Caress could be useful if we aim for their cores since the invisible projectiles should hinder the Eidolons from being able to block and dodge, though I don't know if they have enough stopping power to pierce it.
>>
>>3404404
This layout is correct. The room you've entered is a long rectangle with columns flanking either side. You can't see the far side of the chamber from here.

Consensus seems to be:
> Activate Body of War
> Enter the room and dodge to buy time to activate your tenth and final binding
> Bind Fourth's Control Rod into a focus.

If that's correct, please let me know which object you'd like to bind the Control Rod to.
>>
>>3404678
Sounds fine.
>Binding option
Go with the Bolt Thrower. It's available, ranged, and doesn't require an unbinding. Unless we want to go really crazy and go for the Fruit
>>
>>3404697
The problem is that we've never tested out that combination before, and while the result probably won't be a dud, we don't know what it would be.
>>
>>3404404
Ah thanks anon
>>3404697
Agreed. If the bolt thrower is anything like the bow itll be destructive enough to injure one
>>
>>3404678
I think maybe we should try the mace instead, or just use it in sync with Body of War, since I think blunt trauma to the joints might fuck these things up.
>>
>>3404761
You are unfortunately not currently carrying a mace or other blunted weapon.
>>
>>3404737
The only free bindables we know the result of for Fourth are The Empty Bottle and Static State. Static isn't really useful here. The Bottle might be with some careful finagling, but the Bolt Thrower is a safe bet.
>>
>>3404767
ah well, then I guess we can try to use the bolt thrower. The alternatives are using the Bolide Bracers and hoping we can punch these things apart, or trying to make the Empty Bottle work against multiple targets.

I don't know, my confidence is really shot since it looks like this quest came back just for us to get ourselves killed.
>>
>>3404773
Our gauntlets don't currently have anything in them
which allows for
>Gloves: Bolide Bracers. The mass of Osyki's fists is exponentially increased while these handwraps are worn, and his fists burn alight when swung. Their charge seems limited.
With that, Atlas Pauldrons, and Magni's buffs, our fists might be strong enough to be considered blunt weapons and to me these guys seem scarier at range than they do in close combat.
>>
>>3404813
I'd missed that, but I'll still back the Bolt Thrower. With the Blessing and Resonanta, plus the mobility bindings, we can shrug off just about anything ranged. It's the close in guy that seems to be giving us the most trouble.
>>
>>3404840
Really? To me the ranged attacks have fucked us up a lot more than melee, though the biggest threat of course is their teamwork.
>>
>>3404697
>>3404737
Binding things with the fruit seems to fuse the spirit's power directly with ours. My best guess is that we'll become a living avatar of nothingness, a result both awesome and horrifying at the same time. It could either be the thing that saves us or a really terrible idea given the circumstances - or both.
>>
>>3404874
Like I don't know, we've dodged and parryied every close range blow so far, but we've gotten hit by two ranged attacks and they were both pretty bad.
>>

Finally. Some room to maneuver. Resonata grows mute as you hurl yourself to one side, tucking and rolling as you hit the ground to take cover behind one of the floor-to-ceiling columns. A splitsecond later a hail of obsidian and flame punches through the white-teal afterimages of your movement. You don't even take a moment to breathe, leaping from pillar to pillar in an effort to keep your foe from finding an angle of fire on you. As you flit between pillars you can hear the eidolon on the wall above you scrabbling after you, talons sending a fine rain of stone chips plummeting with each darting movement.

“I'm not even scratching these things,” you mutter. “Do it. Juice me up.”

”Very well. Prepare yourself.

Your limbs seize and ache as the brass filaments wound 'round your muscles suddenly swell with eldritch might. Your skin splits in places to reveal churning cogs and gears ticking away beneath your skin. The world pitches to a crawl around you as your ears ring with a cacophony of shrieking steel, a discordant chorus of otherworldly fury that sings like liquid fire through your veins. You can feel the skin of your back stretch beneath the Elder Turtle's blessing, nascent wings curling and threading beneath your armor.

> [Modi Magni Union Level 2: Body of War. ]

The litany of unification rings out as the tables turn. You sheath the Core Skewer and cradle the newest item in your panoply.

> [[Binding Discovered: Ejecta Collider. A matte-black crossbow, more a crossbow-shaped hole in the world, with vanes of iridescent energy arcing from it. A built-in winch primes the empty chamber, which gathers particulate matter over several seconds into a small metallic projectile. The weapon fires with tremendous force.]]

The technology is fairly new to your grasp, but not to Modi Magni. Your limbs move without prompting, priming the weapon's mechanism and sliding around the nearest pillar. Dust and particulate begin to swarm into the tiny vacuum left behind in the groove a bolt would ordinarily slot into. You peek your head around the corner—

Your hand snaps out and -catches- the obsidian lance waiting for it. The climbing eidolon, now directly overhead, rears back in surprise as filaments of brass wind outward from the torn skin on your palm and envelop its weapon. The Atlas Pauldrons flare with verdant light as you drag the eidolon sideways, whipping it down off of the wall and slamming it into the earth with an earth-shattering -BANG-.

Magni's spear, abandoned to the ground in your moment of pure instinct, sprouts tiny centipede-like filaments and scuttles up to secure itself to your back. The obsidian blade, shattered in the impact, is quickly retrofitted by Magni's touch into a wickedly curved blade of obsidian and brass, the edge gleaming with tiny tearing hooks. A roar of flame draws your attention to the eidolon that has been raining fire down on you for nearly two minutes now—rather than dive out of the way, you hook the curve of your new blade into the fallen Eidolon's leg joint and hurl him forward in reply.

The two projectiles meet with a shock wave of shattering force. The spider-climbing automaton withers under the heat of the projectile, down for a moment but not yet out of the fight. As the eidolon in the hallway barrels into the chamber you level your the Collider at it and squeeze the trigger.

> 81

The tiny projectile of iron leaves the weapon so fast even your enhanced perception cannot track it. By the time the air fills in the absence it has left behind with a roaring thunderclap the eidolon across the room has sprouted a melon-sized hole in its torso. The noise shakes streamers of stone dust from the roof, echoing across the chamber. You dig in your heels, enhanced muscles straining to resist the massive recoil of the weapon's blast. The string of the bolt-thrower smokes and dances with pinprick embers.

In the distance, you can hear Fourth humming quietly to himself.

“Holy shit.”

”I like this spirit.”

As the thrown wall-crawling eidolon begins to rise you hurl the curved blade in your hand like a boomerang. It twirls through the air, burying itself up to the hilt in the automaton's arm joint.

One down. One reeling—the flamethrower with a new aperture has not fallen quite yet.

One moving to engage.

> Keep to a distance. You have the advantage in speed and firepower now. Wait for the Collider to prime again.

>>
>>3405669
Something else important. We last handed off the road agreement to the elders, who told us "come back tomorrow" I think the Workshop Recall Totem is still on cooldown, and the Eluneia one certainly is, but that is fairly important.

And last we heard from the General, the preliminary scouts had made it to the eventual resting place of Poinstar & it was about to exit the mountains (iirc), but nothing since.

If this doesn't get us the Spark, we're going to have to really lean into the Tyrant Hunt. The known drawers will take a ton of work each, and I have a terrible suspicion the Spark in the top drawer, as a way of saying "congrats, now you're ready to teach."

At this point our best bet is to line up as many apocalypses as we can and hope they all cancel each other out.

On a different note, I think one other thing we should do when we have a little time is manifest the spirit of the Emperor Cobra. Considering that our binding include a lot of stuff that really isn't that related to "being a giant snake" I'm willing to bet that it almost certainly managed to acquire an Ego somewhere along the way, and judging by the theming, it is probably just simmering with rage that we haven't asked for an audience yet.

The clockwork winding through your musculature whirs audibly. The eidolons seem to possess a modicum of machine intelligence, able to attempt ambushes and factor in arcs of fire to avoid one another. Even now the automaton moving to engage you takes its approach on an arc, one massive stone claw held up to ward away assault as it advances on you. You imagine the creators of these things intended them to repel invasion by blade and flame. So close to the entrance, they must be intended to ward off intruders would could reasonably fit through the stone hallways.

Time to hit them with something unexpected for a creature your size, then.

You spring back from the charging eidolon, skating to one side on Aurum’s air cushion to slip out of view behind a pillar. The sounds of pounding stone on stone indicate that the creature is hot on your heels. It only takes a moment to stow the Collider at your hip, the vanes of energy snapping together to form a sleeker profile. You dig your fingers into the support you’ve taken cover behind and -pull-.

The skin at your fingertips split open, nails cracking as a set of brass-tipped claws gouge into the stonework. You can hear the clockwork armature reinforcing your skeleton groan as you slowly, inexorably, begin to rip the solid stone beam from its anchor. The Altas Pauldrons flare to life again at your shoulders, acid-green earthen energy spilling down your arms and mingling with the brass filaments that run like liquid in rivulets up the length of the gray-green stone edifice. The issue is less one of strength than that of scale—the pillar is easily six times your height, and nearly thrice as big around. In the end, you don’t manage to bring the whole thing down before the eidolon rounds the corner.

You take the roughly twelve foot chunk of stone as a consolation prize and swing for the fences.
>>
>>3406507

> 53

The majority of the stone shatters at it meets the eidolon’s hearty form, blasting away in a cloud of discolored chips and flecks. The air is filled with a sudden plume of dust as the outer shell of the pillar-piece is shorn away by meteoric force. You’re left holding a core of brass-laced masonry, a long bat-like rod as tall as you are studded with brass nodules in even intervals. As you watch, the nodes begin to re-shape and refine themselves under Modi’s auspicious direction, spiking outward into millimeter-thin points.

The force of the impact sent the eidolon sprawling, but it’s quick to recover. It slaps the ground with both claws, flipping itself back onto its feet with a thunderclap of force. You plant the end of your impromptu club in its chest and -shove-, driving it back into the earth with enough force to send cracks spiderwebbing across the earth. Resonata sings in your ear above the din of shrieking steel, and you whirl aside as a bolt of flame lances over your left shoulder. The eidolon with the ragged hole in its chest from the Collider’s impact has recovered enough to renew the assault, though judging from the way its legs shake and waver beneath its own weight, it won’t be moving anywhere quickly. You raise the Magni brand testsubo high overhead and with a mighty swing, reduce the number of arms the grounded eidolon possesses by half.

You wonder if the constructs feel pain as you bring the club up again. A part of you hopes so.

The next swing obliterates the grounded eidolon’s torso entirely, splitting it in two. A column of captured spirit-flame roars into the air, whirling and shaking itself as a dog might worry a bone until it disperses in a spray of energy. You turn to the eidolon sniping at you from the entryway and note with some concern that the wall-crawling eidolon has vanished from the crater you drove it into.

Your concern is short-lived. The assassin construct drops from the ceiling directly overhead, pinning you to the ground with its bulk by the waist in a spearing tackle. You manage to interpose your club between the shearing, flame-limned claws and your body but the weight bearing down on you makes maneuvering in any meaningful way impossible. A hazy glow flickers around you as the Blessing of the Elder Turtle projects a force barrier into the air—enough to shield you from assaults of flame from afar, but not nearly potent enough to force this thing from your chest.

You struggle with the eidolon for a moment, teeth grit as you jockey for position. Aria Nymph hums, and a spark reveals a point of weakness beneath the assassin’s right arm joint.

A window. A hair's-breadth chance.

We're on the ground, face up, with the eidolon on top of us? The club sounds too long to make use of here. Core Skewer is stored. Grab our ritual knife, Body of War should boost it enough to do damage. Try for the weak joint, but if it's out of range for a leg joint, or whatever we can reach. We need to get him off of us.
>>

>>
>>3406609

>>
Yeah I don't know, if there's some elegant or stlylish trick we can pull off right now, I can't see it.
Even if Seneschal Step made our legs flexible enough that they could bend back and wrap around the Eidolon I don't think we have the leverage to pull it to the ground, and even if we did, that would just invite the damaged Eidolon to shoot us.
The Collider takes too long to charge, even if we didn't even bother aiming and instead just tried to use the recoil to blast us out from under the Eidolon.
Even if there was an Eidolon shard close enough to our head that we could turn and grasp it in our mouth, the result would still be more unwieldy than taking one hand off the club and grabbing a weapon as fast as we can, plus I don't want Modi's magic bronze near our digestive tract.

So now it probably comes down to a desperate roll of the dice.

>>3407680
Exactly. It's just a tough spot in a fight, nothing worth considering - these things happen all the time. Once the fight's over, we'll review our decisions, adjust accordingly, and keep pressing on, more prepared than we were before.
>>
>>3407680
>>3407721
Yeah you guys are probably right, we have been in worse scrapes than this before, I'm just building things up since it's been a long time since we had a thread, and I'm the one who helped with the last load out so I feel kind of responsible for how much trouble we're having.

Part of the problem is also that I've been mentally framing these guys as mass produced goons, or generic drones but I don't think that's the case, it's not that we're just messing up non-stop, these eidolons really are strong.
>>
>>3407810
There's a lot of potential bindings to keep straight, and it's been a long time. We just gotta get back into the groove in sorting them all out.

Fist time we fought these guys we had Song of the Deep and a lot of open space to maneuver. and they were a decent challenge. This time we had Stalker's Caress and a narrow hallway.

After this fight we need to rebalance our binding for fighting and make sure the hole through our shoulder isn't a permanent wound. Without Modi, I suspect that arm will be useless. Shoulders are complex, and having a bite taken out of it can't be good for it's continued usefulness.
>>
>>3407869
We should try looking for a health or endurance bind at some point. Ideally, something that could let us regen otherwise deliberating wounds would be great, but failing that something that makes our body itself more durable might work. The Healer does good work, but she can't replace bones or nerves.

Something else on my wish list is a Cave Devourer. We've known about them since day 1, and they are appearently pretty powerful.
Also, once we've recovered from this ordeal, we should follow up on the Faith avatar. We won't have the same guidance, but we do have a direction and rough distance. And something more pleasant than hungar while still being as powerful would be great.
>>
>>3407869
I forget, how potent is
>Void Tremor: Blighted Regeneration
It says that it brings us to full health temporarily, but when it wears off our healing is still boosted and I'm not sure by how much.
>>
>>3407981
Difficult to say. Zahn was working on us at the same time as the regen was working. It also left us with permanent black vein-like markings; I wouldn't be surprised if that happened every time.

I really don't want to use anything Void though. It comes from a source that invaded without permission, won't leave, and explicitly wants us to end the world. Plus, the Void abilities explicitly have a cost, unknown until you've already committed.

Sparks fly from the haft of your weapon as the Eidolon crouched on your chest rains down blows against it. You hips are pinned, affording you little leverage to throw the solid stone colossus away even with your enhanced might. The tetsubo rings with repeated impacts, cracks in the stone quickly replaced with brass tendrils that flicker like serpents' tongues.

You don't have the space to swing your Magni-mace, and the thing above you isn't letting up. Time to improvise.

The Totemist's trustiest tool is his ritual knife. Bloodletting, binding, and backstabbing are only a few of its many uses. Your knife in particular is a lovingly crafted article, the curved blade and well-worn grip a pleasant reminder that Ayren could be a caring mentor between his fits of trying to kill you via exhaustion.

In your hands it has delivered a swift end and a new beginning with equal frequency. Now, with Modi Magni's power coursing through your grasp, it warps to match your need again.

A long piston juts out of the pommel of your knife, a metal rod that hisses with crackling crimson power. You whirl the knife in one hand, your other arm quivering as you barely repel the storm of furious slashes from above, and jam the blade deep into the arm joint of the assassin eidolon. The blade scraps and sparks as it strikes home, slotting into a tiny flaw you opened when you originally wrenched your foe from the wall. Jackpot.

> 52

The piston depresses with a metallic ka-chunk. The blade erupts in a crackling blaze of Modi Magni's particular brand of vitriolic fury, disgorging an orb of corruption around the knife that detonates absurdly close to your prone form.

The Eidolon and its arm pitch in opposite directions, wildly imbalanced and thrown away from you. Unfortunately, with nowhere to roll and nowhere to run you can only fling your arms over your face to ward away the bursting core of energy. Your Body of War works triple-time to replace the holes burnt ragged in your forearms and biceps with plates of brass and iron, but it can do little to dull the molar-grinding pain the shockwave induces. You reel for a moment, all the time you can possibly afford, before wrenching your body into motion once more.

Kicking up from the ground, you land on your feet and pitch the tetsubo one-handed into the slowly rising body of the assassin automaton. The projectile strikes it squarely in the ruined crater where its arm once attached, bypassing inches of stony armor and detonating the eidolon's torso in another burst of phantasmagoric flame.

Your barrier shatters as another scorching ray of spirit-flame catches you in the back. Magni's spear absorbs the brunt of the blow, deflecting it with a plate of hastily-grown brass mesh. It's certainly enough to get your attention. You round on the final combatant, jamming your hissing knife back into its sheath and drawing Magni's spear with both hands.

Enough. Enough of this. You have had enough of these useless stone obstructions.

The blade of your spear revs. Tearing, hooked teeth fragment outward from the seamless edge of the weapon, roaring to life in a tearing circuit of carnage-to-be. You crouch low to the ground, coil, and release.

The world blurs around you. The next sixty seconds, in fact, are lost to a blur of violence that strains the memory—a chainspear jammed home into the midsection of an eidolon, a wild swing that sent the guardian into the floor, the ceiling, the floor again, a point-blank discharge of the Collider...

More stomping on the ruined remains with a steel-shod boot than is strictly necessary, all things considered.

When you come back to your full faculties you stand in an ankle-deep pile of fine red-black powder. The room around you is pitted and scarred, long gouges like the clawmarks of a frenzied beast scored in a near-perfect sphere around your current position. You stand panting, sweat dripping into your eyes, pooling at the small of your back. Your heart thunders in your ears.

The room is still. With no prey left to hunt, Modi Magni's power retreats.

The brass filaments knit flesh together as they withdraw, but they do so none too gently. Bruises blossom as skin and bone are roughly mashed back together by infintesimal needles that melt away into a faint red mist. Your knees buckle, and you pitch forward onto hands and knees in a plume of eidolon-confetti.

Close. Closer than you'd like.

The white claw focus grows dim. Modi's power seems to be expended for the time being.

”You alive over there?” Boand's hesitant query rings in your mind, a splash of cool water across your face. You grunt an affirmative, rolling onto your back and attempting to master your wardrum pulse.

You may need to reconsider your strategy here. The compass needle in your mind's eye points ever-downward.

> Make a tactical retreat from the ruin. This may be too much.

We need to heal up at the very least, and reconsider our loadout for heavy close quarters combat.
>>
>>3408103
Part of me worries that there's gonna be some hard-to-forsee consequences to backing down, like not being able to come back, or that other person who came down here a week ago either dying or getting the Hope Avatar before us,or somehow being deemed "unworthy" of getting its aid, but at the same time, I'm not really liking our odds if there are any more eidolons, much less the Avatar itself, especially if we no longer have Modi Magni for a hail mary.
>>
>>3408146
I think we are just too fucked up at the moment.

If you have a miracle loadout for us I'm all ears, I'm really behind on foci studying.

Yeah I don't know. Seneschal Step, Bullwark Aurum, Atlas Pauldrons, and Resonatra all seemed to work out pretty well, but Core Skewer wasn't that good and I feel like Blessing of the Elder Turtle just isn't enough to handle this calibur of attacks.

I don't know, the Pauldrons were definitely useful but I feel like we need something sturdier, and I think Gnome Guard might be better in that regard?
>>
>>3408183
We might be able to bypass the security measures better next time? Though it did seem really difficult.

>>3408188
I think the Eidolons are kind of generated by the plinths?
>>
>>3408188
If these guys are similar as the others, they'll regen after a day or so.

>>3408192
Fist of the Mantle only absorbs heat, and the chainmail is Gnome *Garb*, but otherwise seems ok. We haven't blooded Horizon Kyklos, but it seems like it'll work just fine.
I'm tempted to switch the bow to Song of the Deep and gamble on binding the Basilisk or Scale Tags to the gauntlets, but that's kinda risky given our state.
>>
>>3408103
Let's keep moving. We may be in a rougher state than we'd like, but I have a feeling that if we leave now and come back, the situation will be much worse than before. A person entered the ruins before us, and that makes me feel as though time is a factor in this particular circumstance.

>>3408192
This loadout looks pretty good, given our situation. Crystfire can affect both organics and inorganics, and Gnome Guard will be good for helping us tank things. Fist of the Mantle is the perfect counter for these things' flaming projectiles, it's the first item I'd want to have during a rebind.

>>3408223
At the moment, we can't afford to experiment with bindings. Ejecta Collider may have been successful, but it was a gamble nonetheless, and our luck's going to run out if we keep pushing it in a situation as dire as this one.
>>
>>3408103
>Closely investigate the plinths, see if we can figure out how long it will take the Eidolons to reconfigure themselves
It's possible that we'll be able to recover faster than they will, in which case backing down feels prudent?

>>
>>3408255

>>3408255
Though on the one hand, while both Song of the Deep and Fist of the Mantle rely on ambient heat as input, Song of the Deep's output of magma seems to have a lot more oomph than just getting really hot and venting superheated steam.

On the other hand, Crystfire feels like it should do SOMETHING to these guys, like hopefully reduce their mobility by a lot, plus when it comes to bringing ranged pain, we have Ejecta Collider.

On the other OTHER hand, without Magni to reinforce our body and maybe even without the Atlas Pauldrons, will we be able to effectively utilize Ejecta Collider multiple times or will the recoil be too much to compensate for?

Is that something we can test out or do we risk really fucking this place up?
>>
>>3408103

>>3408183
properly backing this binding set
>>3408192
>>
>>3408290
Another thing we should test is how long Horizon Kyklos can hold a charge? Like if we just whack it against the ground a bunch of times until all the crystals light up, how long would it take to be dispeled?

Same with Ejecta Collider for that matter, like if we "load" a "bullet" into it, how long does it hold onto it, and does it become more unstable or weak in time?
>>
>>3408103
>>3408192
So I guess my vote is rebind, take a big breather, and look around our immediate surroundings a bit. I mean it certainly doesn't seem like this dungeon has closing hours or guards that will actively pursue us.
>>
>>3408323
But at the same time, I definitely don't want to sleep over here. For one thing, we do not have that kind of time. So if it turns out respeccing has exhausted us beyond the ability to walk off, then I feel like we should cut our losses instead of getting crazy.

...Like I gave some consideration to use using Wyrmblood Apparatus to let us push that much farther but I don't think things are dire enough to temporarily turn our bodily fluids into corrosive drugs.
>>
>>3408367
...Damn, now I'm getting in my head a bit, like just because Blessing of the Elder Turtle couldn't completely block all our attacks, doesn't mean that it didn't block any of them and slow down others, while Gnome Garb is mostly normal toughness with some ablative properties. Though at the same time, we do have a shield I guess.

Also I mostly specced our weapons against more Eidolons and not against the Avatar of Hope itself, though in fairness the Avatar of Hunger didn't really seem to have any particular stength and weaknesses beyond being generally amorphous and us needing to use environmental factors to kill it. Also I'm a bit worried what Crystfire would do since an Avatar is neither organic nor inorganic really.

Sorry for all the posts, apparently there's a lot of excitement for this quest that's been bubbling up for years.
>>
I hope Hope is friendly and we can talk them into coming with us.
>>
>>3408513
I mean yes, the dream is that the Hope Avatar will be able to gaze into Osyki's soul and see that his life has become an endless series of desperate gambles against ludicrous odds and pressure with Osyki resolutely taking step after step towards achieving his myraid goals despite I'm pretty sure by this point having cumulatively lost at least one person's worth of blood, and say "This guy's my jam, I wanna hang with whatever he's got going on" or even be sapient enough to understand that Avatars get more powerful the more of their defining emotion is around, and we want to enshrine it specifically so it's able to spread more hope in like a feedback loop and be aware that that's in its best interest.

I do have hope that such a tidy and heartwaring solution is possible, but I don't exactly have faith that things will be resolved so easily.
>>
>>3408103

>proceed deeper

We seek the Avatar of Hope, gentlemen. To turn back now, solely because of one bad fight, is to spit on the very gift we seek to find.

As to rebinding, what of >>3408192
But swapping Horizon Kyklos for Mandate of the Earth or Dawning Zephyr
>>
>>3408574
We're already using both of those, the cobra is being used in our boots to dramatically improve our footwork, and the drake is being used in our pants which is what allows us to glide around on those air cushions, so we would need to swap things to fill the gaps, though I guess our old standbys Velociraptor Greaves and Cloudstalker Boots are available.

Also there's one thing I am concerned about, going through Diarca's ask.fm:
>Though some humanoid spirits appear to be flesh and blood, they have vastly different physiology than human beings do. Most spirits are concentrated spiritual power given physical form--if you cut then they may bleed, but it's mostly for show. Weapons capable of permanently killing spirits are few and far between for just that reason.

That seems to line up with how we weren't really doing any damage to Hunger until it got a dose of Basilisk venom, and looking at our bindings the only anti-spirit tool we seem to really possess is
>Knife: Veneni. A macabre trench knife crafted of a single Basilisk Wyrmling tooth. Immaterial effects or beings struck by the knife are forced to solidify and manifest on the material plane. Beings forced to materialize struck a second time receive a concentrated dose of Basilisk venom.
>>
>>3408590
>already using those.

Damn it, I was going to say I abstain on rebinding because I didn't remember what went to what well enough, but thought I had ONE useful suggestion.
>>
>>3408597
I mean, they probably are better swords than Horizon Kyklos would be, I just feel like their current states have synergized pretty well in terms of our maneuverability in relatively enclosed spaces.
Also don't be discouraged, it is a lot to keep track of, and I'm not really confident in how well I'm doing. Like should we swap Crystfire for Veneni due to a standard bow and arrow being kind of unwieldy under these circumstances regardless of how useful the projectiles will probably be? I don't know.
>>
>>3408600
>>3408513
Also I'm kind of worried that I'm thinking about this all wrong and Hope will be virtually impossible to beat in a fight because Sandman, and the key to binding it will instead be like an esoteric puzzle where we need to do something insanely reckless like completely disarm ourselves and place ourselves at its mercy so it considers us worthy.
>>
>>3408645
I have fears too dark to mention, even in spoilers, lest they shape DIarca's mind to cruelty.

I shall say only this: how...resonant it is that a place built to hold horrors also holds this being.
>>
>>3408650
I mean yeah, an Oubliette means a small dungeon cell with scarce entrances where it's thought people were left to be forgotten, and the specific branch we're investigating is called the Cage and even if it doesn't exist in Osyki's world, we know the myth of Pandora's Box. Like I pointed out >>3398699
But all we can do is, unfortunately, hope the Firstborn were huge nihilists, or that they didn't seal the Hope Avatar themselves, but it was generated by some really optimistic prisoners, or that our bindings and rituals can make sure it doesn't spread some kind of madness to our town.
All will be well.

The only sound that fills the great hall is that of your labored breathing. You lie in the ruined remains of your enemy for what seems like an hour, focusing only on quelling the burning in your lungs and the ache that suffuses your limbs. Your eyes trace the cracks and flaws in once-smooth stone overhead that your battle has wrought, a fragmentary record that speaks to the truth of your presence here. The room was untouched when you arrived. The absence of dust within makes it difficult to judge how long it has been since another being passed through, but if you cloaked traveler came this way they did so without alerting the eidolons. The lake spirit did intimate that they had some sort of artifact to unseal the doors. Maybe it allowed them to bypass the sentinels as well.

With a grunt you lever yourself up into a sitting position. The skin on your arms is the only exposed flesh you can see, and they’ve honestly suffered for it. Bruises bloom black and green across the flesh where Modi’s tender ministrations have given way, both limbs mottled with the dull, pulsing record of your enemy’s struggle. Your shoulder is stiff, but you’re pleased to note that it still functions with only a modicum of pain to accompany the movement of raising your arm above your head. Who knew a spirit of wrath could be such an effective surgeon? You’re going to have to get Modi Magni a fruit basket or something when you get back to Grisoch. The Blessing of the Elder Turtle seems to have weathered the remainder of the blows with surprising durability, though you can still feel obsidian shards pressing uncomfortably against your ribs when you turn from left to right.

You review your host of artifacts. The buzz of spirits in the equipment you wear is comforting, like a blanket wrapped around your shoulders on a cold night. You are by yourself exploring this ruin from a time before the dawn of history, but you are never alone.

Still, you think you can make some improvements to your chances of survival.

You withdraw the Crystal Spear, the Siren’s Heart, the Stalker’s Pelt, and the Sealed Earth Sphere from their various housings. They pulse gently on the ground before you, their potential waiting to be unleashed once more. Aside from the Siren’s Heart these are some of your oldest allies—a term that seems absurd, since it’s been a scant handful of months since you picked up the title of Totemist. You’ve come a long way in such a short time. You wonder if he would be proud.

You drown the melancholy thoughts out in a series of bursts of light and energy.

You give yourself a short while longer to recuperate after you finish reworking your panoply. You move on hands and knees to one of the plinths that the eidolons stepped down from, running a gauntlet-clad finger around the base of the structure curiously.

The eidolons of Azeo Sicros loosed themselves from elevated platforms, more akin to altars of worship than these simple stone perches. You find no runes or sigils inscribed on the flat surface, and the air above them is absent any spiritual pressure save the background buzz of power that suffuses the entirety of the hall. You wonder if these guardians will rebuild themselves as the eidolons of the First Totemist’s home did. You don’t see anything to suggest that they will, but the process may be on a delay and you’ve been so, so wrong before.

One thing does catch your eye, though. You worm your fingers into the cold chassis of one of the slain eidolons and extract a glinting gem nestled in the core of its once-burning heart.

> [[Artifact Discovered: Eidolon Core. Can be consumed to provide a temporary surge of spiritual energy that empowers effects rooted in flame.]]

When you can stand the waiting no longer you plant Modi Magni’s spear into the ground and haul yourself back into verticality. Your legs quake momentarily, but Cordia’s warm embrace around your chest pulses once and you can feel your stance steady.

> [[Binding Discovered: Gnome Garb+. The stone plates and ablative armor now also lend Osyki supernatural stability, making him very difficult to knock over or imbalance.]]

“Okay,” you mutter into the empty room. “Round two.”

The hall of the eidolons stretches back into the gloom of the facility. As you step between the pillars and proceed further into the room, strips of glowing crystal illuminate in the floor to match your step. The underlit glow gives the entire structure an undeniably mystical aura.
Here and there between the pillars on the room’s walls there are murals. Mosaics and reliefs depict square-jawed warriors dueling creatures of myriad eyes, fangs, and claws. A history of the Firstborn’s struggles against the Behemoths of yore, perhaps. Nearly three hundred feet down the chamber the far wall finally comes into view, an empty archway that opens into what appears to be a spiraling staircase that plunges out of view. You can see wisps of the outside aurora flickering dimly in the stairwell. As you peer through the doorway you can see that the spiral staircase is unwalled, open to the cavernous abyss that the Firstborn’s prison floats atop. You mutter a prayer of thanks to Cordia for your new sureness of foot as you begin your descent, doing your level best -not- to look down.
>>
>>3408954
From your vantage suspended between two levels of the structure you can see other stone objects drifting through the magenta-lit void. Rune-lined stone cubes and cylinders the size of your workshop float serenely through the empty space. You pull the Grimoire, but the crystal slate is either too far away or unable to translate the inscriptions from your angle. Fuel for additional levels, perhaps? A dark part of your mind wonders if those might instead be this prison’s solitary confinement spaces.

The stairwell descends into an open aperture much like the previous doorway in the top of the second level of the Oubliette. As the stone walls rise around you once more, you find yourself in an almost ovoid chamber. A constellation of crystals float in the center of the empty space, ethereal lines of sky-blue light lancing out from them to connect to bulbs of the same material inset into the walls. Each nodule is roughly the size of a man, and the blue glow highlights a murky silhouette within each one. The stairwell continues to the bottom of the chamber where a doorway is partially visible. Narrow ramps carved into the walls provide a path from the chamber’s base to each of these crystal nodes.

The glowing crystal bulbs—cells?—hum with hazy light around you. The silhouettes inside are fuzzy and indistinct, a combination of the indirect light in the chamber and the thickness of the glassy material. Are these cells in the ‘Cage’ the rune back in the entryway indicated? The tug of the Avatar’s indicator pulls you downward, but it you reason that it wouldn’t do to be ambushed from behind if these things turn out to be hostiles. You’ll just have to confirm for yourself. Carefully.

You take the steps two at a time, descending the remainder of the staircase and hopping off onto the curved floor of the chamber’s bottom. The doorway at ground level is another one of those twisted circular apertures, this one unmarked by the Firstborn seal you’ve seen on the others. From the crystals overhead shine like miniature suns, bathing the chamber in a wavering cyan glow that bleaches all other color from your senses. Selecting a ramp at random, you walk to the nearest crystal protrusion in the chamber wall.
The beam of light that connects one of the central crystals to the dome containing the silhouette strikes it dead center, a lightning bolt in slow motion that sizzles and snaps as you approach. The shape inside is definitely humanoid--you can see a head, the slope of shoulders and the taper of a waist. You’d need to press your face to the crystal to get any more details on the figure, and you’re a little leery of doing that just yet. Instead you carefully sidestep the pod, ducking beneath the beam.
As you pass it by, you note that an arch of runes stretch over the top of the nodule. You pull the Grimoire Potentiate, pointing Amal’s all-seeing eye toward the Firstborn script.

“A name, first and last. Consorting with enemy force.”

A shame the Grimoire doesn’t translate proper nouns from this script. You move to the next pod, repeating the process with the arch of runes over the top of it.

“A name, first and last. Murder of a chieftan’s daughter.”

And another.

“A name, first and last. Opening a gate to the World’s Grave.”

That catches your attention. Uruhol Olihim—even thinking it seems to send shadows racing around you. The World’s Grave, progenitor space of all Behemoths. The silhouette within doesn’t offer any more clues than the last two did, but you’re starting to piece together the truth of this place. It’s....

You glance around you, eyes dancing as you try to count the crystal nodules. There must be at least fifty of them ringing the chamber like lesions, each connected to the crystal mass floating in the center of the room by a white-blue tendril of light. How long has this structure stood, suspended in the void of the Mists? Who built it? The vast majority of Ayren’s work crumbled and cracked when we died, spiritual ties eroding without the anchor of the one who constructed them. Does that mean the Firstborn found a way around that limitation? Perhaps this is a different art altogether than the Totemic craft you’re familiar with.

It’s a dazzling mystery. You feel like the more you explore, the less you understand about the world. You think of Hesheza Zahn, the shade of a man wrapped in feathers and gold. Was he one of these people, once? Did he play a part in building this place?

More questions than answers.

Even if chances are slim that these guys are just in suspended animation or that their very ghosts are trapped in these cells, that still would just mean that there's a bunch of ancient corpses in there, and they will probably still be there later.

I guess that's my vote, since you don't really put people who were already dead in a cage. Though this place is probably a graveyard now.
Now I'm concerned that the Hope Avatar was sealed here as an esoteric torture method, that even when the prisoners were sealed here to be forgotten, they'd never lose hope that somehow everything would work out for them. But that seems like absurd effort for absurd cruelty

This is an Oubliette, a fairly nasty variant of a prison. I doubt this is the morgue, or record keeping.

Last thing we need to do is release max security prisoners by accident. We can talk to Zahn about this whole place later. Even if he doesn't know the particulars, he should be at least aware of this place.
>>
>>3409230
Also what are we gonna do if the person in red went down one of the other two branches instead? Just assume they got their own way out?
>>
>>3409230
though if our suspicions are correct and this is a prison the Firstborn abandoned when their civilization collapsed and thus never brought in new prisoners, is it possible for Avatars to wither in isolation? In which case we might need to nurture it before it's enshrined.

More questions than answers, but time enough for both after you extricate the Avatar from this pit. You hop down off of the elevated walkway, sliding down the sloped wall to ground level. As far as you can tell this place is some kind of Firstborn prison, a holding ground for those who committed unforgivable offenses against some ancient code of law. You ponder what kind of person had the power to open a gate to the World’s Grave. Even if all of these people are long dead (and how could they not be?), perhaps it’s best that you leave this area be lest you accidentally unleash some precursor war criminal.

You resolve to ask Zahn more about his people later.

The round portcullis gate at the bottom of the egg chamber scythes open at your touch, vanes of metal retracting into the doorframe like the eyelid of some terrible predator to afford you passage. The tunnel you enter from there is narrow, enough that you occasionally scrape the shoulderplates of the Gnome Garb against the walls as you slide through. The glassy tracers in the walls fade from the deep cyan of the prison-crystal to a neutral white-gray. The passageway snakes right, then terminates in an open doorway.

You creep carefully through the next few chambers. The rooms are largely empty, chambers of ordinary size devoid of decoration or clutter. Grooves in the floor imply something heavy has moved through the space in the past, deep gouges in irregular patterns scored across the earth of three chambers connected in a roughly L-shaped configuration. Other than those scrapes the rooms appear to have been emptied out, slight discolorations in the stone of the walls suggesting objects of various sizes rested against them at some point before being pulled away.

The door at the far side of the trio of chambers is jammed open, one of the metal vanes that slide together to form the circular seal broken off and wedged into the frame to prevent the remainder from joining together. It’s the first sign of passage you’ve seen other than your own, standing out starkly from the bare room around you. You stow Modi’s spear at your back, drawing and priming the Ejecta Collider as you vault carefully over the base of the half-open aperture.
>>
>>3409570

You drop unexpectedly, landing in a three-point crouch more due to Cordia’s corrective influence than your own reflexes. The entry aperture sits approximately four feet above on the wall behind you—some kind of ramp is folded beneath its structure, jammed before it can unfold by some internal mechanism. The chamber you’ve fallen into is as different from the previous chambers as the prison was before it, a dimly lit rectangular space with two wings spreading from the far end to the left and right. You crouch on an elevated balcony of sorts. The floor ten feet below is made of a smooth, reflective black glass. Semicircular pits spaced equidistantly around the edges vent wispy pale green vapor into the air. You can see another balcony perched at the far end of the room from you, but there are no elevated walkways or arches that connect the two. The ceiling is arched overhead, vaulted to thirty feet above you at its highest point.

Of a deeper concern is the hulking shape crouched on the floor below you. Crawling, quadrupedal, a shape that bristles with spikes and blades shuffles to and fro. You squint in the dim light, trying to discern its shape. A shock of red fur runs down its back. A long tail whips the air, whistling slightly as the blades affixed to it sing through the vapor. You can see sparks as long claws rake gouges in the glass surface below, followed shortly thereafter by a flash of white light as the torn rents knit back together.

You think it may be another eidolon of some sort, but you’ve never seen one this big, nor one with fur or other adornment. It’s easily the size of the Rock Turtle you felled to claim your Crystal Spear focus. It moves like a caged beast, prowling to and fro impatiently. Its back is turned to you for now, but that could change at any moment. Is it trapped here? You don’t think it would fit through the aperture behind you, but surely something like this could tear through the walls with minimal effort.

The Collider hums quietly in your grasp.

Goddamnit, I'm really thrown off by this being included as an option. Like it seems pretty unlikely that that's the case, and even if it is sapient that it would be able to understand us and not be hostile, but I don't remember this ever being listed as an option for any of the other monsters we've seen before.
>>
>>3409578
How does Bulwark Aurum work in terms of vertical surfaces? Like theoretically could it be used to glide across the walls to the far balcony?
>>
Huh. It seems too active to have just been left here. Either the other person in here with us woke it up and then fled, or it's not a guardian but something they brought with them to block anyone else coming through.

>>3409717
Binding log says it works on vertical surfaces. And we have Gnome Garb to make us more steady and Seneschal Step to let us move in any direction as easily as we do forward. I think that's a workable plan, then. Good idea, anon.

>>3409578
> Fighting this thing is a waste of time and resources. Try to sneak past it. (How?)
Jump up the walls to a point above its head, then slide along the outside edge of the room while keeping our eyes on the creature.
>>
>>3409578

>Use Bulwark Aurum to quietly ascend the walls, and observe the creature for a brief while.

There are several details we've observed in the last few minutes that indicate there may be something of interest here.

-The ground here mends itself, while the stone floors before did not.
That implies this space was made for this being. Either as confinement, or as a "living" quarters. The former seems more likely, but then why aren't the walls also self-repairing glass? Are the vapors aiding its confinement?

-it acts in a lifelike manner beyond the programming of previous eidolons.

It appears agitated. Most agitated sentients become psychologically aware of the 'silence' around them, and seek to dispel it to gain a greater sense of control. ie, It might speak to itself if observed, giving us a lead on whether we can hope to peaceably communicate with it.

-it has its back to us.
That last one is not for nothing: if this is a guardian entity, logically it would be default to watching the area it is meant to guard, or the area that most recently had action. Thus, it is either agitated by the passage of the man in red, or it is meant not to stop us from entering, but those within from leaving.

>>
The movements of this beast are disconcertingly quick, especially given how inexcusably -large- it is. As it paces, claws gouging cross-hatched scars in the black glass below, you contemplate how disastrous a direct confrontation with the gigas would be. Better by far to slip around its notice, though you’ll need to repeat the trick once more on the way out. Nothing but the element of surprise—a cheap shot at best on a creature of this magnitude—would be lost by attempting some subterfuge.

You holster the Collider for now, the chamber left primed with a prayer that the trigger guard would be robust enough to prevent a crippling misfire at your hip. The plates of Bulwark Aurum around your waist vibrate without sound, and you levitate into the air on a whisper of hyper-condensed wind. The most silent by far of all the bindings the Skyscythe Drake lends you, and you’ll put that to good use. You grip the railing of the balcony with both hands. You wish you had Amal unbound to help you calculate the arc of your leap. You’ll only get one shot. Too low and you risk dipping into the eidolon’s field of view. Too high and you might collide with the ceiling, overshooting your goal or robbing you of critical momentum.

You don’t have time to agonize. Instinct takes over as you plant your boots on the railing of the balcony and silently leap.

You flip your body around as you hurtle headlong toward the chamber wall, swinging your legs around to intercept your momentum on the air cushion oscillating beneath your feet. The momentum of your forward motion carries you skimming frictionlessly across the wall. You skim just below the ceiling, close enough to reach out and rake a hand across it as the shallow parabola of your flight waxes toward its zenith.

> 93

The beast below you shifts, turning just as you pass overhead to look suspiciously at the entryway behind it. This close you can feel an intolerable heat radiating off of the plumes of red fur that bedeck its back. Tongues of flame dance between long strands of coarse red fur, and the air blurs with bled heat from the trio of sinister spines that cap its tail. Your gloves begin to glow just from the brief proximity to the eidolon below as they drink in the waste heat spiraling skyward. The armor plates that ring the monstrosity’s form aren’t the same glossy black stone as the previous eidolons bore. They flex organically like chitin or leather, clicking together as the beast shifts and sways across its… prison? Habitat?
>>
>>3418449

The pale green fumes dance disconcertingly around you head as you glide across the length of the chamber. You do your best not to inhale, but the vapor is thin enough that it disperses inescapably through the air. The stench is chemical, much in the same way the reek of the tanner’s hut pervades the western end of Grisoch when the wind picks up. Something subtly underlaces that acrid aroma, though, an intoxicating whiff of spiced fume that tingles at the back of your throat. Your head swims briefly as you fight to maintain your concentration on the Bulwark. Any closer to the floor where these fumes are thicker and you’d be at a significant disadvantage.

Your arc thins into a descent. For a heart-stopping moment you think you’ve miscalculated, the ledge of the far balcony dipping further and further above your head. At the last moment you cancel the air cushion beneath your feet, digging the heels of your boots into the corner of the wall at an angle that would shatter your pelvis without the Cobra’s boon, and -kick-. It’s no Cloudwalker Stride, but it mercifully proves enough as you wrap your gauntlets around the gilded rail and haul yourself out of sight behind the balcony railing in a (mostly) smooth motion.

The sounds of shuffling steps below continue unabated. You can’t help but let out a long, slow sigh as the tension bleeds from your shoulders by inches. You can still feel your balance offset by whatever strange concoction swirled within the cloud of off-colored mist you flew through as you clamber to your feet, keeping low to the ground to remain out of the eidolon’s line of sight. The circular door here is similarly elevated to its match on the fire side of the room, but the ramp has extended down to the balcony. You draw the Collider from your hip again. A quick check confirms that the iron-dust projectile is still safely socketed in the bolt groove. A good thing, that, as you can’t imagine how dangerous a dry fire of this kind of weapon would prove to your personal safety.

You press a palm to the plates folded over the aperture and are (to your great relief) immediately rewarded with a series of muted clicks as the metal plates unfurl to allow you entry. The chamber on the far side is lit better than the eidolon’s prison, but only marginally. Compared to the previous series of rooms the interior of this space is positively -cluttered-. Strange cabinets and chests are pushed against the circular walls of the room at uneven intervals. You can see a recliner or padded bench of some sort arranged near to the center of the room, lit from above by another pulsing crystalline chandelier. A deep red cloak has been thrown haphazardly over what appears to be a long, thin polearm jammed at an angle into the structure of the floor. A leather bag rests at the foot of the recliner. The material is scorched slightly around the edges, and the loose straps reveal a few blocky trail rations compacted inside.

You lower the snout of the Collider slowly as you look with confusion and suspicion upon Marisol’s supine form. Her arm shifts a few inches upward, and one eye cracks open to fix you with a withering stare.

“Fuck’s sake,” she slurs, her tongue and eyelids heavy with the weight of one stirred from a nap. “Not you again.”

Also that eidolon definitely seems even tougher to tussle with than it initially seemed, and it already seemed really tough, but at the same time it sounds like evading it was a very high difficulty challenge, though I guess if we have time to rebind and need to pass through this way again, cloudwalker stride and vestus quietus in conjunction with bulwark aurum could make for an easier passage?

On some level, I do wanna beat this thing just because it's there, but I'm not sure if it's alive enough to be bound and again, it looks really really strong
>>
>>3418510
We don't know if it is an eidolon or something else, thus the uncertainty as to what it's doing down there. And if it is one, that would make it an automaton, and thus it wouldn't have a soul to bind.

When we get some free time, I'd like to try binding a spirit to an individual arrow. I imagine that it would result in one very potent effect, but the cost would be we'd actually have to find the arrow later?
>>
>>3418741
I had a similar idea, but for a quiver, or maybe a bundle of throwing knives. I figure that, as long as the object or group of objects can be considered one thing, it might work? So youre not binding to an arrow, your binding to a quiver/bundle of arrows, or such?
>>
>>3418741
Interesting thought, but that'd mean shooting a crazy arrow out of a normal bow, or hoping whatever effect the bows give arrows fired out of them didn't clash with the arrow itself.

Personally, I'd like to try anything Scale Tag in combat. We got it shortly before the hiatus, and haven't used it for anything yet. Unfortunately, we only know 3 bindings, with only the Fruit being combat useful.
>>
>>3418795
When I was trawling through Diarca's ask.fm one thing that stuck out to me was
>As much as I love coming up with new bows for every focus (I really do, that is not sarcasm) I feel that a lot of the potential of Totemist Magic is wasted if you don't try some weird stuff. The fruit/chair/gem discussion at the end of the last thread is a step in the right direction. Generally speaking the underlying system for this quest is built to be as open ended as possible, so creativity is a bonus rather than a hindrance.
So I feel like we should get a bit more esoteric, but at the same time I'm having trouble coming up with ideas.

Like maybe a backpack/traveling pouch and hope we can stumble our way into a bag of holding? Or would that be better served with totems instead?
>>
>>3418852
The creativity is fun, but we're kinda limited to what we can reasonably carry. The chair has some great binds for instance, but we can't exactly go lugging a chair around on our travels. It would be fun to try binding to something static, like a house, or the blacksmith's anvil.

Looking at the spreadsheets, there are several things with only a few bindings; buckler, knife, bracelet, etc. One of the fruit binds has to not drive us temporarily crazy. Boand?. I bet there's a good rope bind somewhere. There's good potential in the flask.
Rings might work, as could earrings if they exist. Might even be stackable with multiple rings. This is a stretch, but a tattoo? We could go tribal and bind things to a skull, I bet that'd get us some real oddballs.
We could swing by the weapon shops in either city, see what they have.
>>
>>3418852
>bag of holding
Best candidate would be Fourth, and I suspect anything put in his bag bind wouldn't exactly be retrievable.
I think something like that would be better suited to a totem, or maybe a really odd pact. It wouldn't tie up our now limited binding slots, and you wouldn't have to worry about what happens when it's unbound with stuff inside.
>>
>>3418904
>we're kinda limited to what we can reasonably carry.

I wouldn't yield that point just yet. It's valuable to learn what happens to non-portable objects so we can potentially create better opportunities. Yes, so far WE have gone everywhere, and bowed and scraped before greater forces, but we could flip the script in time.

Setting up our "throne" in a castle we fold out of the air, or pull from a sack, would certainly establish us as someone worth attention.

I agree with you about binging static things.

One thing that would be interesting, though I can't recall if we've been warned against it: what happens if we bind a spirit to a symbolically "motive" force? Say, a doll, a gargoyle, or an articulated mannequin? Would it move? The gargoyle I can see being more of a sort of empowered/rarefied ward effect, but there's so much we haven't explored.
>>
>>3418932
I bet Fourth + bag would make a Bag of Devouring.
>>
>>3418460
Ha! I was right! Does she have a thing for squatting in dangerous places? I suppose if we find her a third time we'll know it's a pattern and not a coincidence.
>>
>>3418904
How bout a hat?
>>3419581
I admit ive been interested in trying a doll or gargoyle for a while. Additionally, You know what would probably work really well with a few binds? A Scarecrow.
Possibly, there might be some kind of permanent(?) workings that could involve putting a spirit into a artifical symbolic body like that in order to make some kind of ward or guardian, which, considering how often we're away or traveling, Might not be a bad idea if possible.

Rope, knife, key, claw hammer, the charm bracelet, amulet, Lantern and flask all seem like they have big potential we havent really touched yet.
For new stuff to try, Im thinking only a few weapons and more multi purpose tools will be hits. For instance, chains, belt(maybe a tool belt), a hatchet, A torch, a cane...
Bandages is one I really want to try, considering how often we get hurt. we should really be carrying some all the time anyway, and if it they turn out to have good effects when bound, we could use it during downtime so it wouldnt use up a slot in combat.
>>
Osyki needs a day where he can just go through every damn binding imaginable. Personally I really wanna see what other combos Fourth makes.
>>
>>3420609
>How bout a hat?
Good idea, as long as it comes with a strap to keep it on during combat.

The dolls and such might yield results in a similar vein to the puppet Quinn was using. The only downside to stuff that could presumably operate semi-independently from us is the risk of the focus getting lost. Otherwise they could be fun. I suspect the skull mentioned earlier would fall along similar lines.
>permanent bindings
That's what we're doing with the Hope avatar when we find it.
>bandages
I know we've carried them in the past, but typically if we are mobile, we're functional. If we're not, we're byond a bandage's help. Still, the right binding might make them more useful. Or maybe a focus based around health and/or vitality?

>>3420626
Going back through the archives. most experimenting sessions yielded 3-8 results, but those sessions weren't all the frequent. That sounds like a lot, but one of the spreadsheets is 16*29. That's over 460 potential bindings, and that only includes stuff actually tested with at least once.
Fourth is great. It makes me feel bad for the Swamp Ykree and the Raptor though. With the new limit they'll get even less use.
>>
>>3420713
>Swamp Ykree and the Raptor though. With the new limit they'll get even less use.
Maybe we let them free to appease Modi a bit? I can vaguely remember him voicing his disapproval at having this many bindings.
>>
>>3420720
I'd probably be cool with letting the raptor retire. Im thinking the Ykree might be good to combine with the Scale Tag though. Theyre both water themed predators
>>3420713
>>permanent bindings
>>That's what we're doing with the Hope avatar when we find it.
Yeah, I was thinking of a smaller scale version of that. Like a gate guardian, or a protection towards a specific person.

Honestly one thing that hasnt been brought up that im interested in trying to look into is options to augment our Foci the way we did with Cordia and the Sealed Earth Sphere. Im hoping that eidolon core we picked up might be something we could put towards that, since it specifically mentions fire.
>>
>>3420872
We do have an augmentation option in Honing. The Earth Warden was an accident; we'd been trying to bind her the sphere, not fuse her to it. We could make more Earth spheres the same way we did the first, but raw elements seems to be magically radioactive. Not something you really want to tinker with without lots of protection.
>>
>>3420938
The whole point of what I was saying is that Cordia and the Sealed Earth Sphere situation was pretty much an accident, And that we might want to look into the the theory behind it, since we might be able to do it intentionally with some other type of similar material, that NOT a raw element. Or hell, just find some that we dont have to basically bleed out of ourselves somewhere, when we know what to look for and are safely prepared.
>>
>>3420713
>It makes me feel bad for the Swamp Ykree and the Raptor though. With the new limit they'll get even less use.
Yeah, the Swamp Ykree is entirely redundant now that we have the Basilisk Wyrm, Boand, and the Reaver Shark. The Raptor...did we even use it for anything other than speed pants? And we've had Bulwark Aurum for a while. Poor Raptor, it's just not that strong a spirit.
>>
>>3421168
The thing is that Bulwark Aurum is far from the Drake's best binding, it just seemed like it might be useful in this specific area due to there being a lot of flat surfaces.
>>
>>3421168
>>3420938
>>3420872
I think the Ykree and the Raptor would be prime candidates for Honing experiments. Weak enough that we won't miss them if they get destroyed, but also with enough room to grow that they could become useful.
>>
>>3421297
THe only issue with that is the difficulty of the honing is partially determined by how much we use the focus. The raptor might be ok, but the Ykree we've used only a few times.
Still, it's not like they get much use anyway.
>>
>>3421297
There's the opportunity cost to consider. We could try nudging our weaker foci into being more useful, but that means we're not boosting our heavily used foci to being even more useful. We've only got so much time.
>>
So can we take people with us when using our warp totems? Assuming Marisol is stuck here, it would be a nice gesture.
>>
>>3421791
I suspect not. IIRC they were created using our blood.
>>
okay guys, looks like we need a new summoning circle

Just finished the archives. I haven't read through all the player talk yet, but I'm going to leave some notes on particular binds:

>Thane Lantern: Extinguishes Flames. You know, like all the fires we've been seeing on constructs. Whether magical fire counts is up in the air, but I figure this is more than worth a shot.

>Drake Mask+Sonic worm gloves = continuous exploding wind sound

>Glimmermoth Lantern: This thing is seriously strong, requiring little effort to synergize with other bindings.
Blinding light AND metal powder. Also known as chaff.
>>Blinds normal AND thermal vision. It would have completely wrecked the cobra and made it much easier to bind.
>>Coating things with conductive material tends to make them weaker against electricity
>>Chaff mixed with wind is very effective for a process known as sandblasting
>>We know from the sword that this powder ignites. We can do any of the above, AND explode them.

>Raptor pants are deceptively strong for such a low tier monstie. Combined with Cobra shoes and just a little honing, and it'd be more effective than drake pants for wide open plains and deserts. Also frees up the drake for something else.

>Snakes are good with sand. I'm pretty sure Cobra shoes will do well on deserts.

>The majority of Drake binds are good for attacking while kiting, but since most of the time the drake is used to kite in the first place, we don't see this often. Try other binds for kiting once in a while.

this is less binds, more general stuff:

>It's kinda hard to get lightning energy, so if we want to go captain planet and get lightning corruption, don't forget the one piece of lightning crystal we still have.
>homunculi can do manual labor work, like building the workshop extension or the road. The apprentices can research it

>Healing Options
>>Check if Boand would like to multiclass into hotsprings. We already have heated water totems, we just need the right herbs/minerals.
>>Bind stuff into salves or bandages
>>Literally ask Sylvia. She has actual healing powers: she could do a super minor version of a celestial bind or direct us to a minor spirit.....like the one crushing on Boand
>>Our apprentices can't do much toteming anymore. All this research is good, but they could be making potions.

>You all are fucking crazy, picking a fight with a savage deviljho and honing the hunger avatar
>>

>>Glimmermoth Lantern:
The lantern is one of those things we've experimented with some, but don't actually take with us while traveling as far as I can tell. Some of its binds are pretty nifty, but we we're already lugging a fair amount of gear around. At some point, it's going to start weighing us down during fights. It's for a similar reason the pretty cool chair binds don't see much use, though a chair is even bulkier.

>Raptor pants
good thoughts. Only downside is that eats two binds, and leaves us without our favored lightning boots.

>get lightning corruption
We've already got two different kinds of corruption. But more importantly, we got the Earth corruption from a chunk of elemental earth. The crystals aren't elemental, they only contain lightning, as shown in the cave shrine/seal thing.

>Healing
I suspect that won't be Boand won't be up for it. The bindings are worth trying. We do need a Celestial Binding with a land spirit, and that would be a solid (if somewhat risky) way to get a specific effect. Potions aren't really in a totemist's wheelhouse. iirc, we've never made one, and the healers have never given us more than bandages and poultices.
Another option would be to seek out a focus with healing in mind. pick something that heals quick, has good vitality, or something along those lines, and take the heart or something representative of quick healing.

Lantern is waaaaay easier than a chair. People actually bring them into caves, for one, and that's without the weight/fuel lifting restrictions binding does.

I think the biggest problem with the lightning boots is that we haven't found anything that works WITH them. They're extremely effective by themselves, but it takes some thonking for them not to interfere with aiming or other forms of mobility.

Containing lightning is already a big step. It's not exactly easy to call lightning from the skies and convert it into an anomaly. This solves at least the first part in getting every flavor of corruption......if you wanted. Besides, fusing rock turtle or drake with a lightning anomaly would be VERY fine indeed.

Potions ARE in a totemist's kit. Osyki knows how(not that he's better than the healer or anything) and Ayren specifically had multiple flasks of the good stuff. He's bound to have notes on where to get them, if not how to make them.

All this sounds like good stuff to look into and i'd be willing to give it a shot when we have the chance.
The Lantern stuff in particular I was looking at too when I was browsing the binding log, so we can try that when we have to go back through where that Eidolon thing is. at the very least we might be able to put out stuff that gets set on fire WITH magical fire, even if we cant put out the source itself.
Im more inclined to try and at least ask something based on a suggestion by someone who just finished the archive rather then just dismiss it out of hand for no reason. If its not possible, Diarca will just say no.
That simple.

Ykree, Raptor, and Reaver are all powerful candidates for individual Ballistae bolts to fire at our Saurian foe. All we need to make sure is that the null stone won't interfere with the bind, whether that involves incorporating the stone in the arrow before binding, or setting up some insulating material after binding.

That being said, Raptor is still useful and we've barely scratched the surface of Reaver.

We know for sure that we need to hit it with more than one bolt, may as well poison some so that we have the option of using Basilisk Rope on it in the second phase.

If we're willing to sacrifice Plate Wurm for an arrow, it might function as a dedicated weakpoint to send vibrations with melee attacks into its core.

We'll need to talk to First about modifications to the Tyrant Killer. So far there's been no mention of using bindings on the weapon or it's ammo, and if we don't need to risk our foci like that in order to be effective all the better.
>>
>>3428879
I thought it was assumed that we were going to use some 2spirit combo between Siren, Fourth, and Cordia for the ballista itself, but okay.

>thinking we'll ever have time to talk to Zahn
>>
>>3428887
I'd assumed since the thing was so custom it wouldn't need (or even function with) bindings. Plus I figured we'd need the rest of the binding slots free for defense and agility.

rip totemist quest
see you guys in 3 years
