/qst/ - Quests

What is an ending in the infinite sea of stars? Where one story ends other may well begin - and countless threads can be already ongoing.

You are Henri Ford, Captain of MSV Chariot and a special consultant for the Citadel Institute for Xeanoarchaeology. You share your ship with your fellow, the Krogan archaeologist Tufferson Kris. Aftermath of the Battle for Earth has left you both stranded in Sol while the mass relay is being repaired.

Fortunately (or unfortunately?) There is no lack of excitement even with the Reapers gone, as evidenced by the routine trade trip you undertook on behalf of the Turian Hierarchy only to find yourself thrust into a terrorist incident in the Quarian Flotilla that was apparently orchestrated by an unknown party with no reverence for sapient lives.

Thanks to your luck, skill and wit you safely navigated the event and presently find yourself on your way to Namek, Quarian liveship where you are supposed to pick up cargo bound for Terra and... a “surprise”.

In your line of work you learned to be wary of surprises, even if excitement of the unknown was large factor in your choice of career. You are reasonably sure this one is going to be of the “good stuff” variety rather than the “holy fuck one ring on this Hanoi puzzle is missing and the ceiling is already descending” one.

In the meantime, as you wait for your ship, currently slaved to Quarian traffic control, to make its way from Kata to Namek, you browse through the Extranet postings, considering your next activity.

>Alliance supply runs: the Alliance is building a geosynchronous station to facilitate faster flow of easier to process resources and zero-g manufacturing and has cargo to haul
>orbital cleanup: junk orbiting earth gets in way of traffic, repairs, construction and orbital installations.
>Bread and Games: Urdnot Wrex has intervened to prevent a political disaster and kept the assembled troops from carving out a piece of Tuchanka out of what remains of African wilderness. However, the Krogans are bored and issued a tender offer for an entertainment solution... (do not expect to actually meet Wrex himself, he’s a busy man now...)
>Mission of Mercy: Sirta foundation is looking for a freighter willing to pick up some supplies and distribute Medigel to several locations throughout the solar system.
>Fly me to the moon: Synthetic insights is looking for a civilian ship willing to take a crew to Luna.

>bounty, if you can call the vague promise of compensation that, for pieces of (fortunately inert) reaper tech are still up by a few corporations and institutes
>citadel and relay areas are still off limits
>custom queries available

>you have 1 new message from Lea’Fari nar Namek: “Captain Ford, I heard you’re coming to load up. Call me up when you’re here, I have something to talk to you about.”
>>
Before you have time to compose a reply to anything a soft shudder announces that your airlock is interlocked with that of Namek. You pick yourself up, ping Kris over the intercom and the two of you head out.

As soon as the decontamination is done and you emerge into a checkpoint area overlooking a cargo bay you are welcomed by none other than the captain of the ship himself, accompanied by several quarians clad in what seemed like reinforced workers’ suits.

“Greetings, Captain Masi’Sin. Permission to come aboard?”

“Of course. I’m very happy to see you again, especially given circumstances, but I’m sure you’re in a hurry to relax after work well done...”

You wonder. Last time it was him who bolted off after saying his piece and it seems like he’s going to do it again. You shrug internally. It’s a large and old ship, he probably does have a lot of chores to keep up with.

“...so let’s get down to business. In the light of your selfless effort for benefit of the Migrant Fleet I’ve signed off some of our hardware to be fitted on your ship. However considering I’m unsure what you would derive most benefit of, I’ll have to ask you to make a choice.

Please, pick only one. I’d like to offer more, but our resources are spread pretty thin.”

>hangar bay (allows more convenient deployment of your skycar; can house up to 2 small craft aside from the car, shuttle or interceptor; small craft not included; will cost you 1 of 6 of your cargo bays)
>manipulator bay (houses several tools that allow work, repairs, hauling and some limited processing in space or, in a limited capacity, in atmosphere; has enough room to count as hangar for you skycar or shuttle, regular interceptor would not fit; will cost you 1 of 6 of your cargo bays)
>weapon hard point section (can affix up to two mass accelerator turrets and up to four point defense particle lances; comes with 1 turret and 1 PD lance; will cost you 1 of the 6 cargo bays)
>thruster upgrade - allows greater speed and maneuverability
>shield upgrade - allows Chariot to take more hits before systems start getting damaged
>drive core upgrade - allows greater speed, maneuverability and longer trips (doesn’t matter for now), necessary step before stealth drive (You need very good standing with a faction that has this first though)

Decisions, decisions...
>>
With this I retire. Feel free to commit to a path in the meantime - for when the cargo is loaded and Chariot sets out for its new adventure.

How are our weapons sistems right now? Do we have any?

Because if we don't I think we should install the ship weapons, I predict a rise in piracy now that many governments collapsed and response time is enourmous because of the lack of mass effect relays.

As for the mission, how about we go after some reaper tech and get the chance to look at one of those behemoths from inside?

Usable material we could possibly sell and trade, or if we’re lucky use ourselves. Plus we get paid to do it.

>>

So we can be on the lookout for salvageable reaper tech to turn in for an even bigger payday than the regular space debris? I can dig it. Although none of that stuff is as useful as a Quarian waifu. Well maybe not waifu, just booty call that is also on our ship.

Captain Masi’Sin pulls up an omnitool and confers to you a file with several viable modification options Quarians could fit on the Chariot.

“It would be best if you made your choice sooner rather than later, as some of them have impact in your vessel’s cargo capacity.”

You skim over the options, quickly weighing their potential benefit against the choice of jobs you have lined up. Drive core upgrade seems compelling in the long run, but after brief hesitation you decide in favour of a manipulator section. Not only would it be perfectly suited for several potential activities you could undertake, it could also allow you to more easily access spaceborne precursor artifacts and allows for easier deployment of your skycar.

You announce your decision to the captain who in turns gestures to the group of engineers accompanying him and they scatter to make necessary preparations.

“Enjoy your stay on Namek, Captain Ford. And in case we don’t have the pleasure of meeting again, may the stars guide you safely to your home.”

With that the Quarian captain leaves you behind once again.

Well, it seems you won’t be flying anywhere until the crews are done with the refit and the cargo loading. You hope the Quarians are organized enough not to load cargo onto the bay that’s getting remodeled.

You exchange glances with Kris. What is your next step?

“Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m gonna check if local brew can get any worse than the synthetic stuff we’ve stocked.”

>Go with him and look for a drinking establishment.

“Go on ahead, I’ll join you later.” You say. “It would seem I have an appointment.”

“Have fun. Try to not get us chased away by angry parents.”

“That literally only happened once and they were actual dinosaurs.”

To this day you wonder why Reapers didn’t make more use of non-sapient creatures but it was probably for the best. Brutes seemed positively quaint compared to some specimens you met.

“Yeah yeah.” The Krogan waves off your objection and heads down the corridor leaving you alone as you called up Lea’s comlink.

“Password.” She says in a heavily accented voice.

“erm... swordfish ?” You guess.

“Close enough. Damn that was fast. You must really miss me.”

“Actually, I wanted to talk to your mother about the artifact.” You shoot back.

“Oh. Okay. Well, you know where to find us, we’re both at the “museum”.”

“I’ll be there momentarily.” You nod and terminate the call, heading towards the repurposed storehouse. The guards patrolling the semi-private section recognized you this time, some of them even giving you a salute which you reciprocate, wondering how Alliance military became quite the representative of humanity in general.
Several minutes later you fund yourself in the familiar junction. One of the tables in the corner is once again occupied by a group of Quarians engaged in some sort of group activity. You find yourself wondering if they ever moved from this spot.

What does stand out compared to the last time you were here was a luminous kitten standing more or less in the middle, presumably a holographic image of some sort. It was about as large as you’d expect the real thing to be and it was looking straight at you.

When it noticed it has your attention, it began to move towards a corridor, making a few steps, then looking back at you. Maybe it wants you to follow it?

"Well, time to get baited and ambushed I guess"
>>
Well, you did not expect your instincts to kick in this soon into the shore leave, but there you were. Quickly silencing the voices screaming of bait and ambush by preparing to activate your omnitool at moment’s notice you set out nonchalantly after the cat.

The apparition doesn’t lead you on for long. You round two corners to find yourself in a slightly narrower, less illuminated corridor before a voice comes from behind you.

“Ah-ha! You have fallen int my web now! It seems the guys on Fleetnet were not lying. Human explorers can’t resist the call of a light pussy.”

You somehow manage to maintain stone face, only allowing yourself a small smile. “Nice to meet you, miss Fari. It seems you really take after your mother.”

“Thank you. Now, I hope you’ll forgive the capture, but there’s something I’d like to discuss with you before telling my parents.”

“Very well, I’m all ear.”

“To put it bluntly, I want to finish my pilgrimage. And I’ve decided that I want to start it aboard your ship.”

A silence falls between you, after a while you decide to be the one who breaks it. “And?”

She tilts her head as if you asked her to explain what she meant by “don’t stand in the fire”.

“Uh, What do you expect me to say... “please?”... or perhaps “permission to come aboard, sir!”?”

>absolutely not, she’s a child to you and you’re not a babysitter.

“That would be a nice start, yes.” You say, stroking your chin. “Seriously, though, are you aware what you’re asking for here? We tend to fly off the charted star lanes and explore alien landscapes far away from any civilization.”

“Any extant civilization.” She cuts in.

“True. However, there’s plenty of opportunities to get injured or even killed, be it due to collapsing buildings, ancient defense mechanisms or hostile wildlife. And then there’s pirates, corporate goons and rival scavengers...”

“I get it, it’s dangerous. Pilgrimages usually are. I think I’ll be fine.”

She has a point. Good portion of the things you mentioned are not really unknown threats to Quarians undergoing their rite. You silently nod in admiration that so many actually manage to return to their fleets. For now, however, you return to the present.

“Fair enough, but then’s the next question: what can you bring to the ship?”

“Well, aside from what you already know, not much. I’m alright with the machines, more so with their software. I’d like to get familiar with more languages, too, but don’t know many for now. Oh and I’m really good with thread and needle.” She says, indicating her suit.

“What about this thing?” You say, indicating the holographic apparition.

“Oh, that’s pretty much run of the mill drone, just with a custom holographic skin. These things are pretty customizable even without unsheathing your sonic screwdriver.”

“What about self defense? I know what you said, just... want to know how well you can hold your own.”

“Well, never won a bout with dad unless he let me, but that’s a high bar for a frail maiden like me to pass, but I’d like to think I can at least defend myself. You don’t need to worry about me having constant oversight. I’m an alright shot with a pistol, but that’s about it.”

“Can you drive?”

You can almost swear you saw her eyes light up for an instant, but in the next one it’s gone.

“Yes.”

You expect her to elaborate but it seems that’s all she has to say on the topic.

>It seems Lea’Fari nar Namek is a Quarian lady with affinity for technology, with her focus thus far lying with programming, data analytics and superficial linguistics. She has a lithe, nimble physique, can use pistols and drive a vehicle or a ship.

The choice seems clear. Her skill set combined with a nimble mind made her a solid choice for your crew and you were not about to pass up an enthusiastic extra pair of eyes.

“Welcome aboard, Lea’Fari nar Namek. Looking forward to seeing you in action.”

“Thanks for the opportunity, Captain Ford.” She says. “Now come on, let’s go home so you can finish whatever business you had with mom.”

With a smile you follow her back to the Museum.

“Hey, what are you doing here? I thought your shift isn’t going to end for hours yet.” Xera questions her daughter as soon as the two spot each other. Then she notices you and adds: “oh, hello, Captain Ford.” You return the greeting and she immediately shifts focus back onto Lea.

“I had urgent business to take care of.” The younger woman says. “Like arranging my pilgrimage transport.”

You half expected the older Quarian to make a witty retort, but what did happen didn’t really surprise you either. Xera swiftly approached her daughter and hugged her tightly.

You haven’t yet told Xera what you came for in the first place, but...

You decide to step outside and give the family some privacy. The two don’t seem to mind or notice for now.

You take a place on one of the vacant benches and tune into the news channel, slightly curious on how things are going back home.

Home. What a curious idea. There was a time when it held no special significance to you. You felt no sense of loss when you left the blue marble shrinking away on the ferry’s viewscreens, knowing that countless other, no less beautiful worlds, await you.

Then the reapers came and only when they swept away all the things most of humanity of your time took for granted did you realize how precious, fragile and irreplaceable it was. How little did you and most of your peers appreciate the luxury one could derive from having their homeworld for a sanctuary.

You were sympathetic of Quarians’ plight before, but now you not only understood but felt it as well.

And so you fought. You and many others. Even aliens that would otherwise just as happily kill you for money or claim your land by right of conquest, even sentient machines that once slaughtered their creators, they all spilled their blood on and for your homeworld.

Idly you let your thoughts wander to how your compatriots are doing now. You wonder if Eve recovered. Last you’ve seen the gynoid she was being carted off by Alliance technicians.

Then you hear something that returns you to reality.

“...motives and identity of accomplices remain unknown or undisclosed. Further details on the incident are pending confirmation, but it seems the incident was deftly handled by the forces on site. Council spokeswoman Reila Sanialla has confirmed the Citadel Council is aware of and monitoring the situation. >>
You shut down the news. Great, now you have to be on a lookout for journalists.

Well, you waited long enough. Maybe you should...

“Captain Ford! To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?”

It was Nemo’Ree, Lea’s father.

“Actually, I wanted to talk to your lady and miss Lea captured me along the way.”

“I see. Well, no point in waiting out front.” The marine says and usher you in.
“Oh, hey honey.” Xera said. Guess what? Lea has decided to finish her pilgrimage.”

The marine shifted his gaze between his wife, his daughter and you before slowly drawing out “oh. Oooh. I see... well, it’s her choice to make. However!”

Now he looks you straight in the eye.

“I will not allow just anyone to take my little girl out on a trip.” He announces. You can see Lea’s shining orbs go up in her helm as she groans in embarrassment.

“I shall entrust my most precious treasure on one condition, human - You will go with me to the firing range and compete with me! Only if you impress me will I consider placing the little princess under your stewardship.”

Grin that spreads on your face is one you only barely contain from becoming grotesque. Its been a while since you could shoulder your trusty rifle without necessity to shoot to kill and so there is only one way to answer this challenge.

Well, several of them, but some of them might make you come across as an ass.

“You’re on, Good sir! When we’re done, you will know for a certainty that I’m more than capable of ensuring that the Lily of Namek is returned to you as pristine and unmarred as she stands here with us.” You announce, the object of your words standing there with arms crossed in front of her, one hand covering her visor; her mother next to her, barely containing laughter.

“Bold words for an outlander. Let’s see if you can back them up!” The marine nods, motioning for the exit and you head out.

On impulse, you stop in your tracks just before the doors.
“Worry not, mistress Fari, I shall return with your father’s blessings and then we shall ride out into the stars together.” You add before making your exit.

Presently, you find yourself outside with Nemo’Ree.

“Do you have a weapon to show off with?” The marine asks in a considerably less melodramatic tone.

“I do. It’s on the ship though.”

“That’s no trouble, let’s go pick it up. I must say I find myself curious wha it is.”

You nod. You could use a loaned rifle but you would feel like you’re missing out. In the meantime, another question arises: should you pick Kris up? He would maybe want to join in and Nemo would possibly appreciate knowing remainder of the crew...

“If you were a Krogan, where would you go to have a drink hereabouts?”

Nemo considers the question for a while.

“Well, there’s a few mess halls throughout the ship, but for off duty purposes the best bet would be the Admiral’s Folly, a named mess hall near Namek’s plaza.”

“I’m guessing there is a story behind that name.”

“There are several, nobody remembers which one is true. If any of them is.”

“Well, lead the way.”

“You’re not trying to get me drunk to improve your chances, are you, Captain?”

“Of course not. I am just hoping to pick up my other crew member, and that place sounded like one he might enjoy.

“Ah, yes, I heard you came with a Krogan. Yes, I’d like to get to know him.”

The two of you weave your way towards the Plaza until at the last moment Nemo guides you int an unmarked, nondescript corridor.

“Here we a- “ Nemo starts when a door opens and a Quarian comes flying through and remains lying on the floor under opposite wall.

You’re not all that surprised to fin Lris standing in the door and give him a stare which he reflects with ostentatious indifference.

“He was being rude to the barmaid.” He says

“I wash being ruuude to the bashmaid...” the quarian confirms.
You look back at Kris and shrug.

“Whatever. Nemo, this is Tufferson Kris, a special consultant for CIX like me and my friend. Kris, this is Nemo’Ree, father of our new crew member.”

“Well fuck me. You went and hired another hand. Does that mean I can quit and finally realize my dream of becoming a bouncer in a quarian bar?”

“If that’s truly what’s your hearts desire, I guess? But that can wait. We’re going to test which one of us is a better shot. I figured you might want to participate.

“Damn, that sounds actually compelling. Okay, count me in.”

“I had a feeling you’d say that. Alright, let’s go get my gun.”
>>
As the three of you set out towards where the Chariot is moored, Nemo picks up the initiative.

“So, I understand that You’re both archaeologists?”

“Yeah. My clan disowned me for that.”

“Seriously?” You ask. This was news to you.

“Yeah. They reinstated me after I sent them some trophies from our first job together.” You shake your head at that. Krogan politics.

“What sort of trophies?”

“Rachni carapaces.”

“You dug up some Rachni?”

“In a manner of speaking.” Kris says.

You were about to provide context when you rounded a corner and came within sight of the access to port Chariot was docked to... and earshot of it, too, revealing before you a scene of moderately heated argument between a longshoreman and an engineer, against backdrop of Quarians carrying containers away from your ship.

Honestly, you were kind of expecting this.

Bypassing the arguing Quarians you board the ship, giving Nemo a brief tour until you reach the compartment you designated as private cargo bay, which the worries fortunately respected, revealing several shipping containers with rations, expedition gear and your skycar. Without further delay you head towards the weapon locker and recover...

Opting for the classic you reach for the weapon that accompanied you during most of your previous adventures before the Reapers arrived.

>going to take the Volkov since it probably makes more sense to have ended up in a civilian professional's hands than "cerberus skunkworks" one.

"Is that a Volkov rifle? I haven't seen one in working condition in a while."

"An elegant weapon, from a more civilized age." You intone, impressing absolutely nobody. Suppressing a sigh you contemplate how much is lost in translation when dealing with aliens.

"I understood that reference, I just don't want to be encouraging you in using them." Kris growls, possibly reading your body language. Nemo just lets the in-joke between the two of you fly past and moves onto the next question.

"You might want to get your hardsuits, too."

You wondered where a firing range would be aboard a liveship, but apparently those are one of few classes that have enough space for Quarian soldiers to train when luxury of a reasonably temperate terrestric world is not readily available. But even here, when it came to testing out and practicing skill with long guns, the range turned out to be a small ledge on the far side of an airlock.

"Well, the view is nice." You comment, watching the curvature of Uranus taking up most of the sky and its rings glittering softly in rays of distant sun.

"Most of us have seen sunrises over countless alien worlds. I can't even begin describe what I feel at the thought that we're returning to ours. As soon as the relays are back up, that is."

"I can relate, now." You say. "However, that's not why we're here!"

"Ha, ha, indeed! Time to back up your words or eat them, alien."

"Hey, I'm at home here."

"Not on this ship, you're not."

"Get a room or get shooty, you two." Kris growls.

"Why don't you grab a gun of your own? They have spares around." You note.

"You know what? Why the heck no. Will be really embarrassing for you if I beat the both of you considering long guns have never been my forte."

With that the three of you ready your guns - you your Volkov, Nemo'Ree his Kishock and Kris a spare Mantis...

Nemo'Ree goes first. With several touches of his omnitool he activates the systems that generate and track holographic targets against the backdrop of the gas giant. Then, with a practiced movement of one who's accustomed to keeping his enemies at range he takes aim and fires, scoring one, two, three flawless hits.

You nod in appreciation. Keeping up with the marine will not be trivial, even for you.

You shoulder your rifle next, and nod for the marine to generate a set of targets for you.

Steadying yourself you scan the sky for the holographic blips. You don't have to search for long, one of them drifts casually into your field of vision and you hit it quickly and effectively.

The next target poses slightly greater challenge, hugging the planet's horizon, but its trajectory is smooth enough that you manage to land a clean hit anyway.

Third target seems to have a mind of its own, adjusting its course every few seconds. What's more, its erratic maneuvering takes it into the ring region amidst sparkling blocks of ice. You strain your eyes, attempting to fix the target in your sights, but as soon as you squeeze the trigger the target makes another change in course and you knew your shot was off.

"Well, well, well." The Quarian intones smugly.

"Not so fast, soldier boy." Kris growls. "Much as I appreciate seing Ford's smug grin displaced, I haven't had my go yet."

The Quarian nods and prepares another set of targets. Kris takes aim and after several discharges of the Mantis ends up with the same score as you.

"Good enough." He grumbles.

"Well! It would seem you have failed to best me." Nemo'Ree says. "Don't take it too hard, there's not many that went up against me and didn't. What you succeeded in doing is convince me that your ability is passable enough."

>Passable? This guy has got another thing coming. Challenge him to a rematch - suggest higher difficulty.
>Passable? This guy has got another thing coming. Challenge him to a rematch - suggest a wager (what? your guns? drinking a beverage of the others' choice in the bar? pulling some stunt?)

The urge to call for a rematch, perhaps with higher difficulty, is strong. After agonizing over it for a while you manage to beat it back and decide against being the sore loser.

"Fair enough and thanks." You say. "You two were pretty good yourselves. What do you say that we head back to where we picked up the wannabe bouncer and finish this exercise with some lubrication?"

"Sounds good to me." Kris nods.

"I appreciate the invitation, but I think should head back while my daughter is still around. She'll be ready to go by the time you come around to pick her up."

The marine shuts down the practice systems, Kris puts the borrowed Mantis back to the locker he took it from. As you are about to part ways, Nemo remembers something.

"Actually, your ship is still undergoing refits today, is it not? I'm afraid we don't have much in way of guest quarters, but I think I can arrange some cots for you in Xera's storeroom."

“That would be much appreciated, thank you.” You reply. Sleep pods were convenient, but normal good night’s sleep still felt much better. Additionally the custodian’s family was not an unpleasant company.

With that Nemo’Ree takes his leave and you head to the Admiral’s Folly with your Krogan friend.

Inside of the mess hall reflected the nature of the establishment as a place of release and relaxation and would fit well in lower class wards of the Citadel, minus the otherwise omnipresent Asari dancers.

There was a small dance floor for Quarian dancers, though presently vacant. Regardless, you felt no inclination to show off your moves as it were and instead headed off towards a bar.

“What will it be?” The barmaid, a quarian lady with husky voice and a more robust build than what you’ve come to recognize as average, presumably the one Kris previously payed a knight for.

“Do you have something palatable to a human?”

“Well, we have synthale, premium synthale, lemon-lime flavored synthale and Pinot noir 2109 from the Ruhr arcology cut with synthale.”

You make a face. “Are you kidding me? That sounds like premise of a joke.”

She shrugs. “The cask was damaged in a loading accident and it’s contents got mixed with that of other vessels. Why would we otherwise keep a stock? It was trade good that lost its value.”

“Try it. It’s actually pretty good.” Kris says.

“Alright, hit me.”

The quarian nods and goes to fulfill your request.

“Heh.” Kris chuckles.

“What?”

“Speaking of jokes, we could’ve been in one had the soldier boy come along.”

“Hah, true. I wonder what the punchline would be.”

“You, probably.” New voice said. You and Kris turn to face its bearer and are confronted with a group of Quarians.

“So, you are the guy who booted poor GerTrood out of the bar.” The lead one said. Some of his companions seemed vaguely familiar to you and your suspicion is quickly confirmed.

“Hey, I recognize that guy. He’s that asshole that has me and ma boys hauling shit back and forth like idiots.”

“Good, all the more reasons to give the alien a lesson. Nobody gets away with bossing my boys around.”

Well, it seems your good name hasn’t reached everyone’s ears. What now?

So you are the guys that carried all that stuff? I thank you guys very much, how about a round of drinks on me? I carried my fair share of cargo around to know it makes people thirsty.

"So you are the guys who hauled the stuff onto my ship?" You ask, hoping some flattery will be able to defuse the situation. "I appreciate it, honestly. I hauled my share myself and know how it gets one thirsty. Come and drink with us?"

That seems to take the group by surprise.

"Seems like a good idea to me." One of the workers says.

"Oy, have you forgot that the big one roughed up Ger?" Another objects.

"Yeah, but Ger is kind of a bosh'tet. He probably had it coming." Third one points out.

"Hmm."

With the impetus broken and his men divided, the group leader weighs his options. After sizing both of you up and noting the Volkov in its compact form hanging at your back he decides to take the offer. "Alright then. Sounds good enough compensation for me."

With that the group populates the bar and the lady in charge of it soon provides you with a line of drinks with straws.

Kris wasn't entirely wrong. It did taste better than the synthale on its own, but you probably only accepted the taste because you haven't tasted actual wine since, well, certainly before the war.

You spend an hour or so sipping at the liquid atrocity and joining in chatter with the Quarian labourers. At one point you get into an arm-wrestling tournament in which you end predictably second after Kris and part with the Quarians in reasonably good humour.
Eventually you find yourself back at the already familiar junction/square with a bunch of Quarians occupying one of the tables in the corner. You are warmly greeted by the small family, introduce Kris to Xera and Lea and are shown to the corner of the storeroom where some simple cots were prepared for your perusal. You thank the couple for their continuing hospitality and mention to Xera the idea you had regarding possible use of the memory artifact in aiding the investigation. She promised to give it some thought and you left it at that.

And so you found yourself lounging around back in the museum storeroom, pondering your next course of action. From what you learned from the dock workers at Admiral's Folly, the Chariot has been loaded up and refits are set to be done in several hours, meaning you have some time still available.

The idea was this, ask her to entrust the artifact to her daughter, we intend to visit at least some of those sites when the relays are back online and that could help us understand more about the artifact, and we are probably going to visit other Prothean ruins, if we could find a way to activate the artifact to show us memories of those places, a real image of the past, to give us insight on how things were, just imagining the possibilities. It would be a good research for Lea, Kris and us and we would obviously share the credits equally of any discovery made.

Of course, we don't expect her to accept to part ways with it, even if with his daughter, but our professional drive demands us to at least ask since this is an interesting discovery that could potentially lead to much more, and if nothing else, a suggestion of an avenue of research she could take, tell her so.

Something's been tugging at you the whole time you spent on Namek. Both times. It's that group of quarians outside always fiddling with their omnitools, engrossed deeply with some apparently group activities. You are able to venture some guesses, but the uncertainty of it nags you and so you decide to >investigate.

Upon announcing your intent, Lea'Fari perks up.

"Oh, those nerds. Wait up, I'll go with you. This could be interesting." She says, giving emphasis to one of your suspicions.

Wordlessly, Kris gets up as well and you walk outside with your crew in tow.
When you approach the group it takes a while for them to notice you, but before you walk right up to them one of the young women does and tugs her compatriot sitting next to her to draw his attention.

"Oh, hey Lea. Decided to join us after all?"

"Sorry, still couldn't be bothered to roll up a character. However, this is captain Ford and he is curious about what your bunch of slackers is up to."

"Hey now I'll have you know we're all here on our mandated free time." the young man claims.

"Yeah. We're just lucky enough that our services are not required at the moment." the girl who noticed Ford's approach remarks.

"Can't you keep it down? I'm trying to strategize." third quarian, a shorter one, says.

"No, you're trying to look up campaign notes on the extranet." a girl sitting next to him counters.

"Captain, meet Namek's support maintenance staff. They bravely volunteered to stay aboard during the battle for Earth instead of staying behind on Rannoch." Lea'Fari says, encompassing the group in a wave of her hand.

"That actually took rocks, even if they did it to stay together." Kris commented. "Or lack of imagination, but I don't think I can accuse them of that, if I'm reading this gathering right."

"Wow, that sounded pretty smart for a Krogan." short Quarian says.

"Shut up, Myro. If he were like your stereotypes suggest, he'd blow your head off for that." His neighbor chided.

"Which is exactly why I felt safe saying that."

"Ahem! It's a pleasure to meet you, captain Ford. I'm Tou'Hoti nar Namek and these are Sara'Rin, Myro'Ken, Nela'Stie and the quiet one is Mani'Kor. As you can see, we're in the middle of a game of the Wall Reclaimers."

"He of course can't see that at all. Notes are on our tools and while the concept may be well known, specifics are only weeks old." Myro comments.

You get a blip on your own omnitool. Bringing it up you see message from Lea.

>If you think you've seen enough, now would be a good time to withdraw.

As if on cue, Tou speaks up. "Say, Captain, I think your unique perspective could greatly enhance our experience and be an amusing distraction for you. Would you like to join us for a while? We'll help you establish your characters. Lea, you're always welcome."

“All right, I’m game.” You say, taking place at the table. Lea and Kris take places next to you after the rest of the groups shuffled around to make room.

“Awesome. Okay, so the scenario is this: Morning War never happened and the Quarians and the Geth lived mostly peacefully on the Homeworld. But one day what was assumed to be a meteorite hit a remote location in wilderness and from it Reaper corruption began to spread, turning people into monsters and subverting the machines. The nations of the world banded together in order to combat the menace. Players are agents of the Council tasked with achieving an objective, like recovering a sample of reaper tech, capturing a specific location, defeating a particular enemy or finding a hidden indoctrination device.” Tou explains. “Right now we were stopping by a trade post to gather supplies before making a push onto the dread castle of the three eyed reaper scion, so a perfect chance to hire new characters.”

>Geth - robust, high tech, weaker resistance to corruption, can’t be cleric
>Highlander -stronger, higher faith values (faith affects corruption recovery on self and others)
>Plainswalker - average in most respects, slightly lower tech, slightly stronger
>Urbanite - frail, high tech, lower faith values
>Marked - frail, can access Dark Arts, resistant to corruption

>Fighter (best in physical combat, poor utility)
>Tinkerer (can deal with mechanisms and enemy machines, craft ranged weapons)
>Cleric (calls on his faith to purge corruption and counter Dark Arts)
>Weaver (can manipulate dark energy, magical attacks and some utility)
>custom class

“Yeah, so the corruption doesn’t affect everyone equally. Some people got twisted in such way they retained their personality but gained access to Dark energy manipulation, these are called Marked and are generally outcasts.”

“Don’t bother with mechanics, Myro will handle them for you regardless of whether you want it or not.” Nela says.

“I only do it for you because you are special.” The shorty says, although you could swear you heard an “to me” at the end. “But... I guess for the sake of expediency I’ll humor you.”

“Okay, soooo... lets get started.” Tou attempts to get the game back on track. You and your crew pull up omnitool’s and connect to the helper app.

>What race and class do you pick?

Looking over at Kris you see him quickly settled on an Urbanite Cleric.

“Literally why would you do that? That’s pretty much one of the worst matches that are still legal.” Myro whines.

“Figured a conscientious enough cityfolk would feel more than most others how badly someone to fight corruption is needed right where people are most concentrated.” The Krogan explains.

“I see. Well, at least you have a justification. I’ll see if I can salvage this...”

After some deliberation you are rather quick to arrive at a choice: you are going to play a Marked Weaver, one of the souls lucky enough to survive interaction with the corrupting power while gaining access to control over dark energy.

Seeing Lea still struggle with her choice, you address her.

“Trouble making up your mind?”

“Mm-hm. Can’t decide between a conservative, effective build and something I’ve been meaning to try...”

“Just go with what feels “right” to you.” You advice. “Otherwise you set yourself up for regrets later.”

She seems to consider it for a moment, then settles on the “loremaster.” Custom class.

“What class is that anyway?”

“Oh, um... I kinda stitched it together, trying to capture character of someone who travels the countryside and collects stories and folklore from various parts of the world.”

You nod in acknowledgment.

“If you made a custom class you’ll have to handle it yourself. I’m washing my hands off that.” Myro says.

“Oh don’t worry, I can handle that much. You just help our guests.” Lea responds.

“Alright, seems like we’re ready to go. Ahem. Do you want to include the recruitment, or do we go directly onto the travel?”

"No point in wasting time on more slice of life stuff after our last session, let's get on with the meat." Sara'Rin says.

"Fluffing their characters' induction will make for smoother narrative and help them get into their roles." Myro argues.

"I think some sort of introduction would be nice. No need to make it too elaborate." You muse.

"Alright. I think I got it." Tou says and clears his throat (again).

"The troupe enters a tavern. Smell of quickly cooked simple meals mixed with that of travelers' sweat and scent of incense employed by some innkeepers with hopes it would keep the ever-present corruption at bay is thick enough to make an impression even through your olfactory filters."

"I have a question." Kris says. "Filters? If we're all on the Homeworld in this continuity, why are we wearing suits?"

"An astute observation." Myro nodded. "However, environmental suits have been adopted en masse specifically to ward off the corruption. People are very wary of exposing themselves in any way."

"Okay. Please continue."

"Well. So." Tou resumes. "As your vision adjusts to the shadowy, smoke-shrouded indoors, you spot a peculiar trio sitting in the corner. The bizarre makeup immediately identifies them as kindred souls of adventurers."

"I scan and size them up." S4-R4, the geth fighter says.

"Hey, you can't just go and scan people out of the blue. That's rude." Nela'stie, the highlander cleric chides.

"This platform is merely taking necessary precautions." the killing machine replies.

"So, how would you describe them?" Myro asks, looking at you. You exchange glances with your companions, looking who'll take initiative. It seems to fall upon you to take the responsibility.

"In the middle of the group sits, interestingly enough, a Marked man, foreboding aura of dark energy subsumed behind his otherwise unremarkable appearance. He holds a mug of cheap beer in his hands and stares blankly at its bottom."

"At his right sits a wiry man, his suit altered to accomodate machined augmentations to his right arm and leg. Resting against the wall next to him is a staff with verses of hope inscribed alongside it, identifying the man as one of the faith. The man's eyes are closed and his stance relaxed and contemplative." Kris picked up.

"At the other side of the Marked an unremarkable woman is seated, datascroll in one hand and stylus nimbly penning some notes. From time to time she would look up and onto one of her companions, asking them a question and taking note of the answer." Lea completes the cycle.
>>
"Assessment complete. Characters exhibit familiarity with struggle and physical indicators suggest power level in line with current unit composition. Suggestion: attempt integration." Sara says.

"I agree, we're going to need every assistance to make it past the Dread Castle's guardians and defenses." Myro nods.

"The hope grows the more of us share it." Nela agrees.

"..." Mani announces. You're not sure how he managed that.

"Letting Nela take the point, your group approaches the out of place trio in attempt to enlist them to your adventure." Tou narrates.

"Greetings, travelers. May the Light of hope shine upon you. Can you spare a moment of your time to fellow wanderers?"

You consider what to answer to that, but Lea decides to take the initiative.

"Certainly. I'm Lea'Fari, the tale-chaser, and you look like you have more than one tale to tell."

"You could say that." Myro speaks up. "Took more than just luck to get away from some of them."

"There is an aura of power behind this one." Mani speaks up, prompting rest of the table to turn towards him. "Tell me, what is the Art to you?" He addresses you directly.

You ponder the question for a moment before replying.

"I look up from my drink and answer: 'It is a burden I must bear so that others don't have to." You reply eventually. "I accept it as such and shoulder it to the best of my ability.'. Then, I add: 'During my travels, it has also proven to be a boon to me and those I care for, and bane for those who sought us ill.'"

Mani looks at you for a moment before nodding. "You understand the toll of the Art as well as its value. I would see your act if it follows your words." Before resuming his silence.

"That's... good, I think. I think he likes you." Nela says. "Could we know your name, traveler?"

"My name is Han'Ree, and I'm traveling the lands with my friend..." You look at Kris.

"Kris'Toff, disciple of Hope. Formerly of..." Kris makes a few taps on his omnitool, looking something up. "...Tangraa, before it fell."

"...yes, looking for those in need of succor from the everpresent blight." You add.

"I joined them on the road to hear their tale and maybe participate in it as well!" Lea concludes.

"It is a pleasure to meet you." Nela says. "We are Council Enforcers and we are on a quest of grave importance, seeking to strike at the heart of darkness, the Dread Fortress of Tillumos, the three eyed tyrant."

"It is a dangerous endeavour, virtually a suicide." Myro says. "Nevertheless, should we succeed, it will allow the people to reclaim the entire region from here to Shanar mountain range and maybe open an avenue of attack to the corruption root itself."

"Estimation: concurrent unit appears capable as well as possibly motivated. Proposal: joining of forces to maximize concentration of powers and include additional synergies." S4-R4 raises her voice.

"I look at my companions with an unspoken question to which I already know the answer." You say and at your side Lea and Kris nod their agreement.

"You have my staff." Kris says.

"And you have what power I have to offer." You add in.

"What sort of loremaster would I be if I let this chance pass me up? Count me in!" Lea chirps.

"With their participation settled, the three strangers sat together at the table to discuss the best way to approach the Dread Keep." Tou narrates.
>>
"I reach into my sack and produce a map of the area." Myro takes over and activates a projector on his omnitool. Image of a map is projected onto the table. "Our options are limited, but do not leave us without choice. The simplest and quickest route would take us through the central plains. It would mean travelling in the open, without shelter on the way and without cover from prying eyes." Myro explains, highliting a path on the map going through a featureless, open terrain straight towards the blip that presumably denoted your destination.

"I could shroud our approach with Art, but it would leave me spent and drained until we found a place to rest." Mani remarks. You note that you should have the same ability.

"Another option is to travel through the eastern crags." Myro goes on, highliting a region on the map. "It is a difficult terrain that will hamper our movement significantly and is not explored well, but should provide us with cover from enemy's sight and hopefully locations of shelter along the way."

"Warning: absence of intelligence may mean unknown enemy presence." S4-R4 says.

"Finally there's the Westwood. Relatively traversible terrain with some shelter and cover, but assuredly populated by abundance of corrupted wildlife, posing both physical threat as well as risk of exposure to the blight."

With your explorer’s eyes you scan the map for features that could help you find an alternative approach and are quickly rewarded for your efforts.

“What about this area?” You indicate a belt of land where several streams originated before joining together some distance south into a decently sized river. The river itself was of little interest to you at the moment but the lack of surface water between the spring area and the ridge towards which the Dread Fort was situated indicated possibility of-

“Karst area. Good catch, Fo- er, Han.” Kris said, sporting the same feature.

“Well, it could be nothing. Cave systems are not necessarily navigable. Unless the area has been surveyed before?”

“Hmm... I haven’t considered this possibility, but...?” Myro says, looking to Tou who nods in assent.

“As luck would have it, the strangers were quick to prove their worth to the group, the mysterious Marked man and his unconventional companion revealing a fourth option of approaching the tyrant’s lair - the forgotten chambers of Menegar.” The Quarian GM narrates and makes a few taps on his omnitool.

>secret unlocked: Lost Chambers of Menegar.

“Nice!” Nela cheered.

“Good going, strangers.” Sara said and remaining two gave a respectful nod.

“‘Very well, seems like we’re going underground’, I say as we commit to the secret passage and move on to plan out our approach in detail.” Myro says.

Tou looks around and, seeing no one waiting to speak, advanced the plot.

“And so you huddle together over the map and discuss your plans until the evening advanced and you retire for the night.” He makes a few taps on his omnitool. “...which passes by uneventfully. You awaken refreshed and well rested, prepared to tackle challenges of the Lost Chambers of Menegar.”

Tou reaches to one of his pockets and pulls out some drink. After drawing a sip through his emergency induction port he puts it away again and continues on.

“The next day you set out towards the location known as the Weeping Cliffs. It is a brief hike through a pleasant landscape, as of yet untouched by the scourge. At first you travel along an established path but after you reach a cheerily babbling creek you turn northwards and follow it upstream. After a few more hours you emerge from the foliage onto a small glade, its northern face white cliff wall. The wall was pockmarked by spots of greenery but, more interestingly, leaking streams of water in several places, feature for which it was undoubtedly named.”
>>
With this Tou falls silent, awaiting players’ input.

“If there’s a way underground here we’re going to find it.” Nela says. “Sara, can you scan the wall for cave entrances or weak spots?”

“Affirmative. Please, stand by...” Sara says and fiddles with her omnitool. Tou looks down at his and announces:

“After several minutes the Geth soldier was unable to spot an opening large enough for the three arty to fit in and neither were the rest of the champions. However, she did spot an unusual spot between two of the small waterfalls. It takes a while to remove vines from it but eventually - there can be no mistake - stone door are revealed. Unfortunately, they are closed and no way of opening them is immediately apparent.”

Tou falls silent again, letting you discuss your next course of action.

It can’t be helped.

“I approach the door, knock and say ‘Open sesame, we’re friends.’”

The Quarians look at you with confusion. Kris looks at you with disappointment, something Krogan face is suited surprisingly well for, then shakes his head for emphasis. You sigh internally and go on with the next part of your plan.

“I draw upon my power and use the Dark energy to open the way.”

“I attempt to get a grip of the door itself and try to shift it in various direction to try and figure out which way it’s supposed to go and where their mechanism is.” You say, calling up an rng of your omnitool and conferring results to Tou.

“The newly enlisted Weaver reaches out to the mysterious door with tendrils of the dark energy, taking hold of the barrier and giving it subtle prods in every direction. After a while it became apparent that the door was made to slide to the left once mechanism on its right side was released.” The GM narrates your efforts.

You contemplate your next move, wondering if you could (or should) apply more force, either on the door itself or the locking mechanism now that you had an idea where it is, but the issue is taken away from you.

“I approach the indicated area and search it thoroughly for possible controls.” Myro announces. “Maybe I could use a drill to get to the lock now that we have an idea...” he thought aloud.

“Your search reveals a barely discernible pattern on the surface.” Tou says. “It’s too subtle to make out details, but it seems to consist of several images.”

“Observation: this Platform can use its scanners to analyze the pattern precisely and extrapolate its original definition based on erosion modeling.” S4-R4 offers.

Tou checks on his omnitool and after a while a series of images is distributed to all players. Lea cries out in excitement:

“I recognize this! It’s the fable of the man, the stream and the mountain! But it’s rearranged... I’m sure if we touch the images in correct order...” your new crew member hovers her hand over her omnitool, then selects some of the pictures in a particular order. “Man sets out in search of fruit of healing... man follows the stream... man arrives at foot of mountain... man refreshes himself with water and climbs... man reaches the summit and fights the winged serpent... man is wounded but sends the fruit down along the stream... villagers recover the fruit and plant it in the village square... there, that should be it.”

Tou nods in acknowledgment. “Got it in one, Lea. Ahem. The loremaster readily deciphers the meaning of images on the wall and proceeds to touch them in correct order. For a while it seems like nothing is happening, but then at once the arcane mechanism comes to life and a massive slab of stone moves aside, revealing the darkness beyond.”

“Sara, you take the point.” Myro says matter of factly. Sara just shrugs.

“With the Geth soldier lighting the way ahead, the party proceeds bravely into the bowels of Menegar...”

“The party progressed at a steady pace as it traveled the ancient corridor. Even without the puzzle door they had to open to get there it would’ve been clear by now that these chambers were not wrought by the elements alone.” Tou said.

“Kinda ironic considering how we changed upon them.” Kris remarked.

Undeterred, the Narrator went on. “The corridor seemed to extend far into the distance, making the adventurers wonder how close to the Dread Keep they would surface and, with a more worrying note, what will they do if no way out is readily available.”

“If you’re going to make us backtrack all this way I’m going to punch you.” Myro stated.

“Undeterred, the Narrator goes on to remind Myro it was him who complained about unlikely and too convenient dungeon designs in the past.”

“You’re not actually supposed to... Ah, nevermind.”

“Good. And so the party travels up the corridor, chiseled rock walls punctuated by an occasional outcropping, their footfalls echoing agains backdrop of distant drops of water and bubbling of underground streams.”

“You know, that would actually be an interesting way of getting out - washed out by torrent of a drained reservoir.” Kris remarked.

“Shh, don’t give Tou ideas.” Nela hissed, but it was too late, the GM was already typing something out into his notepad.

“Where were we? Ah, yes. You all but lose track of time as you traverse the darkness.” Tou says when he’s done typing. “But suddenly the weight of air changes and the walls of the corridor break away to give way to a Domed chamber that seems to stretch out beyond reach of S4-R4’s searchlight.”

“That seems extremely statically unsound. Such a structure would no doubt have caved in long ago.” Myro remarks.

“Han and Mani begin to feel a soft tingle in their skin, betraying presence of Dark Energy at work, as is often the case among ruins of the Ancients, no doubt keeping the chamber from collapsing.” Tou growled. “At any rate, some distance ahead you can make out a bluish glow.”
>>
“Assertion: this platform proceeds onwards to get clearer readings of the anomaly.” Sara says and rest of you follow in suit.

“As you approach the eerie light you begin to notice that flow begins to turn damper and softer. You are walking on moss and, against background of the strange glow, shapes reminiscent of surface flora begin to emerge from the shadows. Even in absence of sunlight you soon find yourself walking through an unnatural garden.

Eventually your lead pushes aside several branches of shrubbery and your group enters a clearing housing the origin of the eerie light. It is a tree whose features are wholly alien to all of you, its wood black and matte as the void itself, its leaves glinting with metallic sheen of cobalt coloration and the glow seems to radiate from the fruits hanging in its branches.”

“I run a scan.” Sara says and accesses her omnitool.

“I pull out my specktral analysometer and examine the phenomenon.” Myro announces and does the same.

“I consult the scrolls of ancient wisdom.” Nela says.

“What she said.” Kris follows suit.

“I consult my notes of local folklore and cross reference them with the puzzle at the door.” Lea says.

“...” Mani says and just silently fiddles with his tool.

“I Submerge my consciousness into the flow of aether and examine the fruit.” You announce melodramatically.

Tou nods and collects the input from your omnitool. “The party spreads out around the clearing, everyone making their own effort at deciphering the enigmatic plant - if it even was one - in front of them. S4-R4 and the tinkerer examine it through the prism of technology, the two clerics debate its nature on levels metaphysical, The loremaster attempts to draw on the passed down words of the wise and the two Weavers examine the mystery through their minds’ connection to the realm of dark energy. It takes them some time, but when the adventurers gather together to compare conclusions they arrived at...”

You read the message Tou sent to your omnitool. It reads: “you focus on discerning the nature and structure of the shining fruit, but it seems fruitless.” You grimace a bit at the expression and read on. “The object of your examination appears to shrug off any attempts at being touched by your tainted powers.”

Well, that did seem... lackluster. You hope others fared better.

“Physical characteristics of this fruit defy classification. Spectre of radiated light is peculiarly even and surface is abnormally smooth and free of any superficial defects or foreign bodies.” Myro announces.

“The ancient prophecies don’t refer to anything like this. There’s talk if the ancients leaving behind boons of various virtues, each guarded so that only the worthy might gain their benefit, but nothing specific.” Nela says.

“I think the fruit from the take at the door might have been one of those boons.” Lea says. “I’m not sure which, though. We’re clearly not on top of a mountain, and none of the other similar stories I know describe the location in much detail.”

“...” says Mani with crossed arms. It seems he didn’t garner more than you have. Although...

You return to the note Tou passed you. “I wonder... you say the fruits are... flawless? Pure?” You turn to Myro.

“You could say that.”

“So it rejects taints... like dirt or germs or mushroom spores or.... touch of the Dark arts. You said the Ancients left behind artifacts bestowing boons? If there was health, what others were there?”

“Well, there were gifts of health, fortune, insight, purity, power...” Lea recited.

“Wait a moment, purity?”

“Yes. Wh- oh. Ooh.”

“It would seem we found the trees bearing fruits of purity, then.” You conclude.

“Cool, Myro’s suit was becoming a bit...” Nela commented, to Myro’s immediate discomfort. He didn’t get much time to dwell on the topic however as Kris laid down the next question:

“If this is one of the ancients’ boons then where is the guardian?”

“The floor begins to tremble, it’s barely noticeable at first but grows in intensity until you have to actively work to keep balance.” Tou says. “Looking at the tree, still as impassive as before, you notice a shadowy shape emerging from the inscrutable blackness of the trunk. In many strands It weaves and swirls in the brilliant light of the fruits until it coalesces in front of you into a shape of a six limbed serpent standing on its two hind legs, its scaled tail lashing judiciously behind it, wings spread out to assist in balancing the creature.

It towers above you, slits of its eyes penetrating your mortal shells and into the marrow of your selves.”

“Are you trying to be dramatic or are you describing some sort of gaze attack?” Sara asked.

“I think we should try talking with it. We’re fighting the corruption after all, maybe it could want to help?” You ask in hushed voice, as if there really was a phantasmal dragon towering over you.

“I agree. The creature is antithetical to our adversary, stands to reason our goals would be aligned. Nela, I think this is a task for you.”

“On it.” The girl says and raises her voice. “I step forward and address the guardian: ‘O protector of the Ancients’ legacy. We are adventurers on a mission and would beseech you for your aid.’”

“The guardian focuses on the highland priestess and speaks. As it does, the ground resumes trembling slightly. Here is what the guardian says: ‘A bold appeal from a childerkind, to not only seek the boon of the Fruit, but also aid of its custodian. I would know more of what gives rise to such request, be it desperation or impudence. But first, you must name the boon which I guard.’”

You exchange glances and subsequently nods with other players.

“The boon you stand watch over is one of Purity.” Nela announces.

“The guardian inclines its elongated head in a nod. ‘Very good. Your senses served you well. Now then, what reason should compel me to accept obligation to aid you besides my sacred duty in this place?’”

“Because the enemy which we fight is corruption which spreads like wildfire, tainting all it touches and reforming what is pure into a caricature of itself.”

“Nothing in this world is truly pure, it can only approach perfection. But I sense sincerity in your words. I did as well sense presence of the blight consuming surface, and it even took its toll on this sanctuary’s defenses. Fortunately, we have withstood the attacks. I this light, it would seem our enemies are indeed the same. “...” Mani nods.

“The guardian examines you for a while, and you return its gaze without faltering. Eventually, it speaks again: ‘I have judged your answer adequate. Your shell may be tainted, but your spirit endures.’” Tou narrates. “The beast’s posture changes subtly, its limbs relinquishing some tension they held in anticipation of combat. ‘You have made your case. When you find yourself facing a champion of corruption, call upon me with these words: Shadow cast by perfect light, come forth, join me in this fight. and I shall come to your assistance once and only once. After that I shall resume my eternal vigil.’ The guardian pauses to allow his words to settle in before continuing: ‘Additionally, the rules for besting the guardian are clear, be it by sword, words or wit. You are allowed to take one of the fruits. They have power of unmaking taint in anything they touch even their potential is released. Use it wisely, and fare well on your quest.’”

“You got it.” You nod. Mani does as well. “That leaves S4-R4, Nela, Kris, Lea and myself.”

“Observation: this Platform is designated for frontline combat. Risk of damage to accessories elevated. Addendum: frequent recipient of creator Kor’s defensive anomalies. Risk of exposure elevated.”

“Good point. That speaks against Kris’Toff and Nela as well due to their melee bu- apparent affinity for hand-to-hand combat, leaving the choice between me and Lea.”

“Lea.” Mani states.

“Assessment: According to estimation of purity index Lea is the optimum choice.”

“Fuck you guys, you could’ve at least pretended to be thinking it over.”

You share a laugh at that.

Tou once again picks up the thread:

“Alright, then. With the group having settled on who the purest member is by the way of elimination and voting, the lorekeeper Lea approaches the tree and carefully plucks one of the shining fruits, placing it reverently into a clean kerchief, wrapping it and placing it into a solid container to prevent accidental crushing. Just as she did so, the scene around the group changed - the vegetation rapidly lost opacity before ultimately vanishing from sight, leaving the dumbfounded party in darkness of an underground cavern, with faith in their memories and container in Lea’s knapsack as only evidence of what just transpired.

Seeing no other point in standing about, the company set out once again further into the depths of Menegar in hopes of finding a convenient back exit...”

The adventure continues.

“After once again losing track of time traveling the ancient tunnels, you begin to hear a distant rumble of rushing water...” Tou says.

“I blame Kris for this.” Myro remarks.

“...you pause for a moment, fearing that for whatever reason, perhaps a silt barrier giving in or because of a strong down pour of rain topside, you were about to be washed out by an overwhelming torrent of water. Fortunately, upon pausing, the sound doesn’t grow closer until you resume your travel.”

“Hmpf.”

“It doesn’t take long for you to reach the origin of the sound: a massive waterfall thundering through a middle of a sinkhole into a reservoir at its bottom. Your corridor takes you onto a ledge from which you can admire the play of colours setting sun casts upon the waterworks above and that are reflected off the cascading waters onto curtains of moss and vines.”

“Damn, I can’t wait to get hiking on Rannoch.” Sara remarks. “There has to be so much beauty there that nobody but the Geth saw in living memory. I wonder to what extent they can appreciate it.”

That made you wonder, how much unspoiled beauty remained on Earth. Or Palaven. Or Thessia. The soot has to settle at some point, right? Brazil looked like its already kind of recovering. Kind of. You shake your head. Now’s Not the time. “Oh. Sorry.” Sara said, noticing your movement.

“Don’t worry about it. Please, go on, Tou.”

“Certainly. Along the edge of the sinkhole you can make out a barely noticeable, precarious looking ledge. Circumstances don’t give you luxury of choice, though. The group spreads out into a single file and begins its ascent. Fortunately it concludes without any plummeting, although by the time you reach the surface it is already night. As it turns out, that’s probably a good thing, because relatively short distance off the hole’s edge you spot the sickly green glow of your destination - the Dread Castle of Tillumos.”

A brief while later Lea speaks up again. “As a matter of fact I do. There is a tale that at one point in time daughter of the viceroy got seduced by an errant knight from a far away land. There’s more to the story than that but it ends with the both of them escaping through the tunnel their father had prepared in in case of a siege and fleeing across the mountains into the north.”

“Nothing about whereabouts of the tunnel mouth, is there?” Myro said.

“Nothing that would give us another lead, I’m afraid.” Lea said, skmiing across the message once more.”

“We’ll be lucky if the tunnel exists, nevermind finding it. But at least it’s something to go on. Let’s look for it.”

“I’like shroud myself and scout to the west.” You volunteer.

“...” Mani nods, indicating the opposite direction.

“Very well, rest of us will stay back and try to scour further to the north.”

“And so the adventurers set out in pursuit of the loremaster’s lead. Please, access your pseudorandom generators and give me some 3d100s...”

“One would have thought it unwise to search for hidden entrances under cover of the night, but your party had a formidable toolbox at its disposal. Both Weavers spread out to the sides, shrouding their shapes by veils of dark energy as they set out, probing their immediate surroundings with tendrils of their power looking for signs of subterranean passages. At the same time remainder of the companions was not idle either, taking S4-R4’s innate sensors along with Myro’s improvised Flow Decryptors to scour more remote areas to the north.

Eventually it was Mani who succeeded in finding the hidden escape route. After the party reconvened to share their findings, he silently pointed towards a slope in a rocky depression covered by dried shrubbery that turned out to be cover for the exit.”

“Careful. Exit can be trapped to deal with potential threats that would find it and seek to learn where it goes.” Myro said. “I’ll check for traps.”

“The tinkerer carefully surveys the area around tunnel entrance, with assistance from the Weavers when appropriate, but fails to find any defense mechanisms.” Tou says.

“Looks clear. Let’s head on in.”

“And so the party filed into the escape tunnel, once again with the Geth soldier taking the lead, ever vigilant of further surprises. Fortunately there turned out to be none and before long you reach the end of the tunnel.”

>Secret unlocked: escape tunnel.

You feel your omnitool blip and notice that so does Mani’s.

You detect large amounts of dark energy ahead

Seems like this is it. Corruption you’ve set out to combat was ahead of you in a concentrated form. It would stand to reason for the escape route to end, or, more accurately, to begin in Viceroy)s private chambers, but what do you know of habits of corrupted creatures? It could be Tillumos himself or it could be a lieutenant of his.

“Deciding to try and maintain their stealth as long as possible, the party opts to push the secret door open possibly, hoping that whatever presence is on the other side is not looking in their direction.

The decision pays off as becomes apparent immediately as the group takes in their surroundings. They find themselves in castle lord’s bedroom, or what was left of it under perverse stains of corrupted sinew. What commanded most of their attention however was the wreckage of a bed upon which a female form lay, her suit in tatters, her bruised body enveloped in pulsating tendrils oozing nauseating, foul secretions, worming their way under-“

A fist strikes the table.

“Tou. I did not sign up for your magical realm.” Myro says. “This is your final warning.”

“I agree with Myro. Damn, I actually said it.” Sara says.

“I was only trying to convey how dire the girl’s situation is. I don’t know what your problem is.”

Myro glared.

“Anyway, let me finish the scene. Ahem. The party saw a woman lying on the bed, enveloped in corrupt tissue.” Tou concludes and types something out. Sara’s omnitool lights up.

“Observation:” She says after reading the message and shaking her head. “Biometrics of the compromised creator enable positive identification. This is creator Ada’Rah, secondary designation: warrior-princess of the south.”

“I guess she made an attempt to bring down the Tillumos by herself.” Kris remarks.

“Most likely. Didn’t seem to have gone well. Can we do something for her?” Nela asks.

Sara gets another message.

“Observation: vitals weak, but stable. Analysis: Corruption likely not complete despite extreme exposure.”

You consider options available to you...

“Can I use my powers to strip the corrupt tissue away?” You ask.

“Yes, you may. It will be extremely difficult and exhausting, to the point where it may cost you your life, sanity or health.”

“I will aid him.” Mani speaks.

“Very well, between the two of you you’ll be able to draw the blighted mass off the suffering princess. It will still be a very exhausting procedure that will leave you unable to fight for a while.”

“That seems a viable trade off. We do have an ace up our sleeve.” You nod.

“We could also use the fruit, right?” Nela asks.

“We could, But is that the most we can make out if it? Princess or not, it’s still just one person, and the council is not that pressed for champions for her to make a difference.” Myro counters.

“Analysis: creator Ken’s reasoning is sound. Artifact’s Potential would be wasted in expending it on a single person. Addendum: creator Ree and Kor’s suggestion also fall short of rational justification, at least until the main threat has been neutralized.”

“She may not have this long, for all we know she’s hanging by a thread that’s fraying while we talk.” Lea says.

“Regardless, I’ve made up my mind.” You say. “I resolved to use this taint to combat corruption. I cannot stand by watching it consume another soul. Mani, if you feel the same, lend me your support.”

The other Weaver nods and you both access your omnitools.

You see Kris incline his head and taps his own tool.

“Light of Hope, embolden these selfless souls in their moment of trial.”

“Very well, then.” Tou says. “Please, give me some 2d100s...”

“The two Weavers take positions on either side of the afflicted heroine and spread their hands - it is not clearly understood whether the gesture had actual effect on the flow of energy or if it merely allowed the Weavers’ mind to better visualize its work - their brows furrowed in concentration.”

“Light of Hope, lend them your guidance and cast shadows away from their path.” Kris prays on.

“Soon enough the room, until now illuminated only by the pulsating green glow of the corruption, became an arena entered by a new contender: red and black strands of the arcane energy at first flickered into existence at Han and Mani’s fingertips, then cut into the blighted tissue like myriad of scalpels of varying size and shape. They submerged in the invasive force, one strand of unnatural force clashing against another. Where the abominable mass was neutralized it turned into a pitch black dust, dispersing itself into a smoke mercifully covering the suffering princess as her skin, firm but scarred by lifetime of combat, was beginning to be exposed.”

“Light of Hope, tend with your blaze to that of this suffering child.” Kris pleads.

“I retrieve some spare cloth from our bags and get to work on mending her helmet with omnigel so she doesn’t have to walk around half or wholly naked.” Myro remarks.

“Sweat begins to trickle down the weaver’s face, their breathing increasingly labored as more and more red and black needles are drawn from their auras and cast towards the squirming, waning mass of blight even as it recedes.”

“Light of Hope, Pierce the shroud of doubt and weariness and bring succor to those who struggle.”

“Finally, it’s over. Feeling resistance against their pressure disappear, the two Marked men let their arms drop to their sides. They look about ready to drop themselves as well.”

“Light of Hope, let your glare burn away all despair and accompany us into the new dawn.”

“This Platform moves to support creator Kor.” Sara says.

“I move to support Han-“ Lea begins.

“No, wait!” Myro shouts.

“-before I remember what I’m carrying in my bag and stop myself, not willing to take the risk.” Lea concludes.

“Fortunately Han’Ree seems to have taken the toll slightly better and manages to keep standing unassisted regardless.

Looking around, you see it is done. As the party regains their bearings, the captured princess draws breath, rolls over and begins to cough, smoke and dust falling out.”

“I check her state and offer her clothes Myro scrounged up.”

“Th- *cough* thank you. Thank you for you help, noble champions... and thank you for keeping your priorities in order.” New, slightly familiar voice entered the game as it drew towards the final showdown. “I am Ada’Rah, and I will fight by your side.”

“Same reason as you, Captain Ford, I dare say.” The Asari said taking a seat at the table. “Putting what little I have up in the good fight.”

“Tou, do you mind introducing your lady friend to the rest of us?” Sara asked.

“The lady is not exactly my friend. She just kinda invited herself. Han knows her apparently, and she works for the Council. The real one.”

“Please, forgive the intrusion but I was looking for Captain Ford and when I found him and seen what he’s doing, I couldn’t help myself.” Asari explained.

“Well excuse me, princess, but if you’re done hallucinating from your no doubt terrible experience ordeal, we still have a villain to vanquish.” Myro spoke up.

“Of course. I’ll follow your lead, noble hero.”

“Right then. After refreshing themselves and their new companion with what little supplies they had left, the group steeled itself and headed out of the chamber and towards the keep’s main hall.”

Mani types something out on his omnitool.

“I am spent, but I sense you have some energy left. Please, during the fight, use it to put a protective barrier around S4-R4. She is of us most susceptible to subversion by corruption and neither of us now has strength to purge her readily should the need arise, nevermind containing her.”

Recognizing the exchange was over, Tou resumed his narration.

“Thanks to the nature of their entrance, group made it to the main hall very quickly, only having to dispose of several corrupted creatures along the way, not letting them rouse the reinforcements.

Nothing, though, could prepare the group for a vista that was laid out before them when they finally breached the hall.”

“You don’t sound like the other corrupted.” You say, hoping to stall for time allowing you and Mani to recover at least a little bit if your strength. “Why are you doing this?”

“The tyrant stands up from his throne. You can see he’s towering well above the average height, his limbs deformed but recognizable - and visibly deadlier. ‘I am glad you asked, mortal. What many have foolishly branded a curse, a scourge, something to be rejected and resisted, I recognized for what it is - a blessing, a way for the strong to ultimately subordinate the weak, and a fount of eternal life.’ Walking begins the throne Tillumos points at the map. ‘Look at all this scattered Chaos, held back by petty bickering while wealth beyond mortal imagination is squandered every day. Everything would be working so much better if only there was a single competent mind in charge of it all.’”

“And I reckon you consider yourself that mind?”

“Indeed I do. I always looked down on the easily manipulated nobles, ever so happy to ingratiate themselves with whoever happened to be above their station, brainless serfs who never thought past their next meal, unthinking clerks blindly following procedures without understanding their meaning or purpose... or gullible adventurers that would listen to a generic rant while my fodder converges on the hall!”

Well, you suppose that worked in his favour as well as yours. Do you have a retort?

>feed him his smugness
>not yet, there may be more surprises, better make sure ours is the last one.

In any case, Tou narrates the developing situation. “True enough to Tillumos’s words clamor of shambling horrors fills the corridor outside and in the next moment the battle is joined.”

>The hall has one main entrance at which your party stands. On the opposite side is Tillumos, the three eyed tyrant. He stands taller than average Quarian, at his side a sheathed sword, corrupted, engorged caricature of viceroy’s ceremonial blade. There are two side entrances on the far side of the room he can use to flee or call reinforcements from but seem currently closed.

>S4-R4 can fight at range or in melee, is susceptible to corruption.
>Kris and Nela are both melee combatants, Nela is bulkier.
>Myro has ranged weapon and a bag of goodies like sticky grenades, webbing grenades and ability to macguyver some, within reason
>Lea has a ranged weapon and a blade
>Ada is a nimble and skilled melee warrior, weakened by her ordeals and treatment but virtually immune to corruption now
>you can put protective barrier around 1 person, perform a precise strike with dark energy (weaker vs corrupt targets) or affect environment (push, pull, break things) and have a staff to whack people with

“Engaging.” Sara said simply, accessing combat mechanics on her omnitool.

“The Geth soldier is first to react, raising her weapon and leveling it at the Tyrant, who for his part doesn’t hesitate in squeezing his right eye, allowing the macabre third one implanted above to emit a beam of green light...”

“Deflective shield.” You snapped.

“...only for it to graze the barrier of dark energy and cut past the entryway into one of the approaching monsters.”

“We’ll hold them back.” Kris says, accessing his tool. “None shall pass!”

“‘Stars above, smite these interlopers.’ I cry as I take position alongside Kris.” Nela announces.

“Don’t mind me, I’ve got the back doors covered.” Myro says, conveying his actions to Tou who interprets them.

“The tinkerer doesn’t wait for the secondary exits to open and casts a few binding grenades at each. The devices break as they fly past the Tyrant, releasing their gooey contents that quickly solidify keeping the doors shut.

‘Fools, you blocked off your last escape.’ The tyrant jeers.”

“That’s because we’ve no intentions of escaping. This ends here.” Ada says.

“And it will end the same way it did before.” Tillumos taunts.

“I shoot that grin off his face.” Lea says.

“The loremaster discharges her sidearm. Her shot goes wide, but it distracts the villain long enough for S4-R4 to take aim and fire. The thunderous strike goes through the abomination’s third eye and out of the back of its skull, taking a good chunk of everything in between with it.

“Yes.” Mani says.

“Unfortunately, that was apparently not enough to put it out of commission. ‘Hahaha, I won’t be vanquished so easily, worms.’ Its jaw chitters.”

“Come on.” Myro says. “Fine, I begin preparing incendiary mix.”

“The tinkerer reaches into his knapsack and begins to improvise. Meanwhile, the rescued princess closed the range and swung her blade viciously at her captor. The creature, as if oblivious to the damage, drew its own blade and blocked the strike in one swift motion. It continues with a counterattack of its own that hits only air. Green tendrils radiating and lashing from the corrupt blade seem to have no effect on the swordswoman.

>Tillumos has been deprived of his eyebeam and is now locked in melee with princess Ada.
>creatures keep coming, the clerics manage to hold them for now.
>side entrances have been provisionally blocked.

“The fight continues, for the moment with illusion of balance. Tillumos and Ada trade blows in the middle, while corrupt creatures line up to the entryway only to be swatted, bludgeoned, battered and otherwise tenderized in the chokepoint.” Tou says, reading commands input by the other players. “Lea is handling her sidearm with greater care now, taking potshots at the incoming horde when she’s confident she won’t accidentally hit one of her allies. S4-R4 in the meantime is preparing to fire another round at the Tyrant who seems to have begun taking Ada seriously.

“Ah-ha! Got it.” Myro said. “Well done will be on the house now.”

“The tinkerer has finished mixing an concoction and pouring it into some appropriately fragile vessels.”

“Here they come! Two for the entrance -“

“A pair of incendiary charges fly past the two clerics, spark caused by the vessel shattering setting the few creatures wanting to push through ablaze and leaving a flaming patch behind.”

“And one more for the landlord...”

“Another vessel flies at the Tyrant who deftly bats it aside but only succeeds in breaking the vessel mid flight. The creature gives a surprised, satisfying “Yelp” before resuming its duel, but the distraction was enough for another thunderous shot to land, this time shattering its upper arm.”

“I flash a disarming grin with my headlamp.” Sara says.

“Just as her computations process this new emotion, the Tyrant begins to laugh. ‘Hahaha. Now you’ve gone and made... me... MAD!’ He says in a manic voice and the ground begins to tremble.

“Advisement: scatter away from Centre.” S4-R4 says. Sure enough, a spike of black and green shoots upwards from the floor where you were a moment ago. Ada leaps back just in nick of time to avoid getting impaled and even so got grazed, fortunately to no immediate adverse effect.

Moments later the tremors stop fo a second, only to be reignited when a large part of the floor gets torn up and a hideous structure emerges, dangling the Tillumos’s original form above itself as if it were a mascot or a puppet.

“Myro, do you have more?” You ask.

“The situation has shifted on the battlefield, and the field itself keeps shifting as the grotesque black-green mass pulsates underneath the pavement. The bump, wide as about three men side by side and about half again as tall as Tillumos’s original body used to be, is weaving with surprising agility around Ada’s blows.” Tou narrates and checks something up. “But she doesn’t let up, or allow the spiked appendages growing out of and withdrawing back in to take her easily.”

“Enough. Time to end this.” You say, scanning the table and getting a nod of assent from everyone. “Shadow cast by perfect light,” You utter and feel chills run down your spine. “Come forth, join me in this fight!”

“As The Weaver pronounced the words conferred to them by the shadow guardian an unnatural darkness descended upon the scene that even stopped Tillumos in its tracks as it sized up a new threat.

“C-curse you...!” It hisses, to no effect.

Meantime, the shadow dragon manifestation wasted no time on chatter, narrowing its eyes and unleashing a torrent of white flame upon the corrupted hulk, searing away a good chunk of the corrupted mass and causing it to show fear for the first time.

“Nice....” someone says.

“The dragon flame is relentless as it scours the floor and brings the corrupt mass to boil and evaporation. You notice that even the varied corrupt creatures falter as the viceroy receives further punishment, giving Kris and Lena” some measure of relief.

The Asari taps something into her tool. “I press the advantage and cut.”

“Ada’Rah, not to be outdone, lunges forward and delivers one wound after another. The Tillumos, taken apparently completely by surprise by the guardian’s intervention, is all but defeated and even the generic corrupt abomination gradually stop coming.

In several minutes more it’s over. Body of what was, presumably, at one point a regional viceroy, lays mangled amidst the broken pavement. Nudging it with its claws the guardian growls.

“”’My promise has been fulfilled, I return to my duty. Good luck on your quests, Champions.’ With these words the guardian disperses back the way he came.
Tou falls silent and, for the moment, nobody chose to speak..

"And so this chapter of the story ends. Thank you for participating, friends. And thank you for joining in, captain Ford. Miss Tefar." Tou concludes.

"Pleasure's all mine." The Asari nods.

"Literally what she said." Kris agrees.

"That was more fun than I thought it would be." Lea said.

"I think it's time I finally get some rest." Sara said. "With that new deal with Turians they might actually put us to work now."

"Yeah, let's get some sleep." Nela agrees and other Quarians nod as well. The group disperses (you wonder just for how long) and you find yourself alone at the table with your crew - and the Council agent.

"Right, you said you had business with me, miss Tefar?" You ask her.

"Indeed I do. I understand your ship's been loaded with supplies for the Turians. I'd like to ask you for a ride to their base so I can examine evidence our people found in person."

"The Turians know about this?"

"Technically they don't need to, but yes. This is a fairly transparent joint investigation... in no small part thanks to your decisions."

You nod. "Very well, I can take on one more passenger."

"Thank you, captain Ford." She inclines her head in a bow.

"I have to ask though... I'm rather surprised that you didn't take one of your own shuttles. Why ask me?"

"Council shuttle would attract more attention than a transport that's already expected. Maybe it won't make much of a difference, but I figured since you'd be going this way regardless I might as well take... advantage of you."

"Very well. We'll be departing in a few hours. I'll send you a message."

"Certainly." the Asari says and walks away.

"What do you think of her?" you ask when you're confident she's out of earshot.

"A bit too soft spoken for my tastes, especially since it's a facade designed to cover her resolve. Nice ass though." Kris says.

"I didn't mean it like that." You frown.

"Yeah, yeah. What do you want me to say? She's a council agent. Didn't see anything to make me doubt her story."

"Do you think she could be...?"

"A spectre? Well, the major pain seemed on edge enough from her so she might as well be. Then again, most Turians would heed a council representative even without licence to kill."

"Do you want me to try and find more?" Lea asks, prompting both of you to look at her.

"What do you have in mind?"

"We still have time. I could try to look her up at extranet."

>No, I think she's forthright enough with us.

But hold that thought for later, if she starts acting up, we dig something

"Don't bother." You decide. "She'll be someone else's problem soon enough. Besides, your poking could needlessly land us into more trouble than she's worth."

"Suit yourself." Lea shrugs. "In any case, I think I'm going home... will be last chance I get for a while."

You nod. "We'll come with you. Would not do to accept your parents' hospitality and then not enjoy it."

With that the three of you head back into the museum warehouse.
Some time later Lea joined her parents in the quarters section while you and Kris settled into the improvised cots they set up for you.

"Ford."

"Hm?"

"This is first time I'm actually sleeping in a museum."

"Hm."

"Surrounded by artifacts of ages past..."

"We camped in the ruins before."

"It's not the same. That's more like sleeping in a graveyard. Here the artifacts are shown, explained, appreciated as a message across time."

"Hmm."

"Ford?"

"Yeah?"

"Good night."

"Yeah, you too buddy."
You awaken refreshed several hours later. Checking your omnitool you see a message informing you that refit and loading of the Chariot has been completed and you are clear to depart at your leisure.

Checking on Lea's family you learn they were having an evening of some family reminiscing together. After exchanging some warm words of parting and, in Lea's case, hugs, the three of you set out towards the docking port where Chariot is moored, signalling the Asari agent that you'd be departing.

It was time to leave Namek and head off towards a new adventure.

As the airlock cycles behind you as you board the Chariot, you turn to Kris.

"Take us on course for Earth. I'll give the ladies a tour of the ship."

Kris grunts an acknowledgment and heads into the cockpit section while you motion for the Quarian and the Asari to follow.

"Admittedly there's not much to tour. I'm guessing you've both been in a Kowloon class before?" You ask as you lead them towards the aft.

"Yes, I've taken passage on one when I first embarked on my pilgrimage." Lea admitted.

"My former employment took me to quite a few of these." Libella said.

"What sort of job was that?"

"Customs officer on Illium."

"I see. I suppose no surprises await you here then." You nod, approaching the aft bulkhead with engineering access. You open it and let the ladies glimpse inside of the engine room. "Drive core and access to thrusters, mechanical heart of the ship is here, along with other systems like barrier generator," A gentle shudder announced that Chariot has detached from Namek, "...or inertial dampener." You add. "All of them did get some upgrades before the war to let the ship outrun armed scavengers, then a further boost when it was running supplies for the Coalition."

"I've heard about the Chariot. You boarded a cerberus frigate and successfully captured it during a routine supply run." Libella said.

"Well, yes. To be fair, it was them who attempted the boarding first. And Kris dealt with them all on his own, I was not aboard at that time."

Libella nods slowly, apparently impressed.

"You were on Earth already?" Lea asks.

"Not yet, I came to Earth with the final assault. If I recall the dates correctly, I was fighting on some remote military station in Traverse around then. Alright. Next up, cargo bays." You say, backtracking your steps through the central corridor towards the bow. "There used to be six of them, three on either side of this corridor, which has been insulated and reinforced so that the cargo bays can be jettissoned in case of emergency."

"Has this happened before?" Lea asks. "What sort of emergency?"

"Not to me, yet, fortunately. And the sort that involves unknown precursor technology and failing containment. The Institute is aware that we're playing with fire, or worse. It's the first modification that's been done since the ship was purchased."

"Who did the ship belong to before? How old is she?" Lea asks.

"I'm not sure, actually. I was so happy to have the freedom it represented that I didn't really dig much into her history." You pause. "It's almost certainly not haunted. Or at least it wasn't when I got it."
>>
"What an odd thing to say."

"Not at all. It's quite a common concern among Kowloon freighter crews." Libella remarked. "Probably because the class is so commonplace that bar stories tend to involve them in one capacity or another."

"Moving on, here's the manipulator bay Namek's crew installed. I actually haven't seen it yet myself, let's take a look."

You open the blast door and come through into a room separated from rest of the bay by a transparent wall outfitted with several consoles intended for controlling the machines visible through the window, a set of mechanical arms of various size, racks holding numerous modular attachments and a small fabricator unit that could be used for retooling. On the far side of the module you could see bay doors and a kinetic barrier projector. Walls facing aft and bow were lined with compartments that could house material and spare parts used for work. At the far side you could see some girders and motoric machinery, probably intended as scaffolding in case you needed to move the manipulator arms further out of the ship.

Not bad, you thought to yourself, surveying the scene. Hey, they even left some manuals, you think as you spot several datapads strewn on a table.

"Captain Masi'Sin really pulled through." You remark aloud. "'fraid I can't tell much about this until I familiarize myself with it first."

"I can get started as we go." Lea says, picking up one of the datapads.

"Good idea. Alright, let's move on."

Next up is the private cargo hold.

"This is the storage wher I and Kris are keeping our things. I guess you'll keep yours here as well, Lea."

"Didn't bring any."

"Well, I expect you'll be wanting to bring some back at one point." You shrug. "I'm sure we'll find some."

"Is that a Livingstone skycar?" Libella asks. "I've seen some stolen pieces. Apparently they were quite favoured by mercenary lieutenants as their leisure vehicles."

"I can see why. Not fastest on the market but durable, spacious and with a turret window. What's not to love?"

"The price, apparently."

"I guess professor Stahlberg squeezed it into the starship budget. Or," you grin wryly, "it's one of those that got past your gaze."

"Fair enough." Asari chuckled.
>>
Only two areas of interest were left: crew section and the passenger lounge. You opt for the crew section first.

"This is where I, Kris and now you, miss Fari, can hang out when we're aboard and not in cockpit or taking advantage of the passenger lounge." You say, showing off the area. "Nothing extraordinary here, four sleep pods, some ration stores, rudimentary furniture."

Before you enter the lounge on the opposite side of the corridor you point to two circular hatches. "Escape pods. There's two more back near the engineering section. I kinda hope they won't be necessary."

"Don't we all." Lea nodded.

"And this," you say, opening the next door, "is the passenger lounge. It has slightly more expensive furniture, as you can see, and a wider selection of food stocks. There's also the sofa and a vidwall. I'll admit it's guilty pleasure of mine and my fellows' to use it when we don't have any passengers, which to be fair is most of the time."

"Please, don't limit yourselves on my account." Libella says. "I'll happily spend the trip meditating, or in a sleep pod if you'd prefer."

>Hang out with the ladies in the lounge.
>Hang out with Libella in the lounge
>Go to the Cockpit with Kris

"That won't be necessary. Please, make yourself comfortable. It's several hours of travel back to Earth." You tell the Asari and turn to Lea. "Miss Fari, would you join me on the bridge?"

"Aye, captain." She nods and the two of you leave Libella to her devices.

You pass through the junction and into the cockpit, prompting Kris to look back at you from his station. "Done with the tour?"

"Quite." You say. "I'll take the helm."

"Good, I'll go check out the new hardware. Got some interesting readings, gonna check how many of them are due to poor integration into our systems."

"I was going to read the specs anyway, I'll check the setup from here." Lea remarks.

"Good, good. I'll make sure nothing's plugged in wrong at least."

"Sure, better safe than sorry. Although Namek's people would not make such mistake, especially if Captain took personal interest in the task." Lea pointed out.

With a shrug Kris left the bridge. Silence falls as the young quarian uploads contents of the datapad into her omnitool and links that to display of one of the bridge stations for more comfortable reading.

On your part you double check the course data and instrument readings. All systems green. You're twenty AUs from Vancouver, you've a ship loaded to the brim with quarian food and there's a suspected spectre in your passenger lounge.

Time to punch it. You ensure you got most recent data packet so you can watch some news on your way back and engage the mass effect field. The scene of the viewport warps as Chariot accelerates to relativistic speeds, leaving Uranus and the migrant fleet behind you.

As the Chariot accelerates past the speed of light and Lea is busy reading the manuals in a seat behind you you access the data packet you downloaded moments ago.

"Gonna hear some news, do you want to listen in?" You ask, not wanting to disturb her.

"I don't mind either way."

With that answer you dial volume to low and let the broadcast echo through the cockpit.

"This is Emily Wong and the Citadel News Net, here with the daily digest of the news in the Sol System. The Citadel proper still remains a locked down area as the Council forces continue to sweep it for survivors and potential hazards. Results of the search so far have not been released to the public justified by security reasons." The anchor says. She's still wearing the eyepatch, but that doesn't distract you from wondering what could be happening up there to be tying the Alliance up so much. "Similarly," ms Wong goes on, "The Charon relay remains off limits to civilian traffic of any kind. We have been receiving reports of weapon discharges being observed, presumably in response to attempts of unauthorised entry."

Look at that, you think to yourself, not even a week has passed and we're already shooting at each other. You wonder who could have a ship to their name and still be trying to bypass a coalition blockade to a reportedly non-functioning relay. Maybe some Terminus corsairs? You don't know much about Terminus politics, but if they were organized enough to provide their jigsaw fleets for the battle for Earth you'd think whoever is in charge would be interested in playing nice at least while you're all trapped here.

"Things are less violent, although no less hectic, on Earth's orbit where efforts to curb amount of space debris that continue to impair space re/construction efforts are ongoing at an unsteady pace. Call has been issued for spaceborne volunteers to provide assistance.

On the ground the reconstruction continues, not as impeded but with a monumental task ahead of the civil engineering corps despite the support provided by the military the projections of recovery remain distant. Fabrication nodes being set up at logistical bases across the globe continue in buildup of capacities while supporting crews in the field with material for restoring the infrastructure and the millions of displaced residents with elementary needs and comforts."

Millions. What happened to billions? You shake your head. From what you recall of first estimates, couple of hundred of millions of people should've been scattered throughout the globe, owing mostly to Reaper preference to harvest over simple killing. Maybe those were overstated, though.
>>
"In a bid to bring a measure of order with democratic legitimacy to it to the numerous refugee settlements and enclaves of other council races, the Alliance military continues to work with the Council as well as its non-council allies in laying down groundwork for provisional system governance to prevent further tensions until contact with rest of the galaxy is restored."

You wonder just how well this is going to work and how provisional it's going to be. The situation was rather unprecedented. There will be a lot of bureaucratic reconciliation to be done in any way and you find you're happy you're not the one who is going to be doing any of it.

"In semi-related news, the Krogan row has died down as the clans organizing the battlesports have relocated away from formerly inhabited area into zones designated as natural preserves. Voices are heard expressing concerns for fate of endangered species which have been unaccounted for since beginning of the Reaper crisis but authorities are stretched too thin to intervene."

Just how many issues are going to slip between mankind's fingers in this aftermath?

"Finally, coming around back to space: Investigation of the attempted terrorist attack in the Migrant fleet is ongoing in cooperation with the Council authorities. Our sources report the suspect, acting out of concerns over dangers of synthetic life, attempted to bring a virus to bear on the geth forces presently intermingled with Quarian fleet. The authorities are looking for possible accomplices. Identity of the courageous civilian who assisted in foiling the attempt is being withheld to not imperil the ongoing investigation. This was Emily Wong from the Citadel News Net and the daily digest, thank you for listening."

"What exactly happened there?" Lea asks.

You give brief consideration to the burdens of dangerous knowledge, but eventually decide that as a member of your crew she’d be assumed to know anyway and so it would be better for her to not be in the dark so she can make sound judgements for herself.

“Well, the reason why Kris and I came to the Fleet in the first place was because We were playing ferrymen for a Turian liaison and a shipment of spare parts to be traded for some of your food supplies. As it turned out, there was more to the job than met the eye: one issue was with content that included sensitive Turian cryptography, and one that’s been tampered with to boot. If Turians learned about that one later than they did, they would have come to conclusion that Quarians have been trying to mess with them.”

“That’s.... worrying. Who would do that, and why?”

“No idea. Someone has gone through a lot of trouble and several smuggler lives for it though. But there’s more. The Turian liaison himself had a data stick with mysterious malware on him, mix of strangely sophisticated and blunt and ineffectual code aimed specifically at the Geth.”

“So that’s the terrorist.”

“Yes. He seemed like a tool, though. Ended up cooperating when he learned he got played like a fiddle. He seemed intent on wiping the Geth out but his virus would have only pissed them off, maybe to the point where they retaliated.”

“That’s horrible. Do you think our relation with the Geth is really that fragile?”

“I don’t know. I hope not, but I’m glad we didn’t have to find out.”

“Makes two of us... alright, so where did you come in?”

“When the Turian got confronted he went loud and I helped subdue him. After this we had chance to get him to spill and examine the evidence. Didn’t learn much since. The Turians are making their investigations, as is council through the person of our passenger.”

“I see. Thanks for trusting me with this information, captain.”

“Figured you should know since you decide to throw your lot in with us. Whoever orchestrated this is at large and probably up to no good.”

“Do you think they’ll target us?”

“No idea. Maybe if they’re petty enough. Don’t think there would be any benefit in it for them, only risk of further exposure.”

“Are we going to pursue this conspiracy if we pick up some new leads?”

>Absolutely.
>Maybe if they’re solid enough.

“Absolutely.” You answer with barely any hesitation. “I am not letting some sinister little shit unmake the alliance it took a galactic extinction event to forge if there’s anything I have to say or do in the matter.” You growl, maybe a little surprised at the force behind your statement. Upon reconsideration, however, you decide you would stand behind it. You’ve seen enough death, pain and misery during the crisis - you loathe to call it a war - that knowledge that someone is still callously clamoring for more is making you feel ill.

“...knew I chose well.” Lea says quietly.

“What’s that?”

“Oh, um...” The Quarian stammers, then sighs. “It’s just, you could’ve just said it’s not your problem anymore. Avoided danger. Maybe lied to me, for reasons good or bad.”

“I can still do any of that. In fact I may be doing it now as well.” You point out.

“Sure you could. But for the time being I think my faith in you is not misplaced.”

“Well, I hope I won’t disappoint.” You say, grateful your newest crew member can’t see the slight blush you’re sporting at this sudden vote of confidence.

For a while afterwards you fly in silence, neither of you having anything to add. Looking at instruments it seems you’re in for a smooth, uneventful ride, allowing your mind to wander against backdrop of quiet noise of life support systems mixed with what you believe is Lea humming some tune as she went back to reading the datapad.

Knowing that the ship will need very little input, none if all goes well, until you approach Earth’s gravity well, you consider your options...

As you idly scan the instrument readouts, stable or very slightly fluctuating well within expected parameters, you decide that you might as well get caught up on the reading list you put together for just the occasion of the boring intra-system flights.

One of the issues that kept taunting citadel researchers despite all the progress that had been made on practical use of excavated Prothean technology, was lack of fundamental understanding of their sensometric abilities. Tendency of active technology to convey cryptic messages at range, depositing information directly into explorers’ brains, was a stuff of headaches and nightmares, sometimes literally. While function of an artifact was sometimes uncovered, be it by chance or by methodical experimentation, the exact interface mechanism remains infuriatingly elusive.

You pause reading for a second, contemplating what the actual living Prothean apparently walking around now has to say on this topic. Possibly not much, if your understanding of his role as a soldier or an officer was accurate. Still, you reckon he had a lot of insights to share, whether he knew it or not. You hoped doctor T’Soni would milk him dry. If either of them survived the final battle, that was.

Several theories have been put forward regarding the phenomenon, the more mundane like electromagnetic interaction having been tested and discarded easily. That left only the unorthodox, some spiritual and several outright unfalsifiable ones on the table.

The least outlandish option was that of an as of yet unknown chemical pattern interacting in a complex, multi variate manner with “junk” DNA to produce reactions that propagate into higher thought processes by instilling hallucinations.

You shake your head. The fact this was considered “least” outlandish showed how helpless your civilization has been in this effort.

Further theories included modulated gravitic distortions picked up by thought processes at quantum level, dark energy waves resonating with electromagnetic patterns present in sapient thought process, higher dimension developments of three or four dimensional object that bypassed truespace limitations, thoughts etched into a metaphysical aether by an ascended mind and some others that you determine to be combination or retelling of the previous ones with different terms but same underlying patterns.

What all the theories had to contend with was apparent spooky action at distance, lack of effect on non-sapient creatures, lack of emissions that would be ever helpful in uncovering artifact locations and the high information density. It also seems translation is a non-trivial issue - some messages, intents or triggers seem to be compatible with any sapient being, more complex messages, if they even exist, come across as unintelligible noise.

You sigh in exasperation. If only there was some sort of Rosetta Stone for Prothean thoughts.
>>
“Boring book?” You hear Lea comment.

“Say, Miss Fari-“

“Oh just call me Lea.”

“Very well. Ford or Henri, as you prefer. Anyway, I wanted to ask, do you have knowledge of piloting this class of vessels?”

“Yyyy...not really. Not yet.” She says. “I mean, I’m confident I could fly anything spaceworthy, it’s part of elementary education for us, but I haven’t really had the chance to practice much.”

“Alright. Let’s fix that. Please, take the navigator’s seat.”

The quarian pounces onto the designated chair while you call up the tutorial program and route it to the navigator’s controls.

“It’s not much, but this should let you familiarize yourself with the instruments.” You say. “First, though, let’s go over them together...”

You spend some time over the controls, supplementing the explanatory overlays hovering all over with your experiences. You end up wondering who’s tutoring who by the time you get through the basics, having learned a few potentially useful pieces of trivia, like how you can shape kinetic barriers to allow solar winds or nebula matter to impact your maneuvering, but you do bring to her attention extent of upgrades Chariot got over duration of its adventurous service.

“All right, I think I’m ready.” Lea leans back contentedly.

“Ready to fly?” You ask.

“Yes. Into the stars. Into the void. Into the unknown.” She pauses. There was that glint again. “Into the adventure!”
