Descending the stairs of elven architecture in your new elven abode, sure enough, a few balls of dancing light is waiting between the trees leading deeper into the forest. Complying with the orders given you follow those faerie lights. Along the journey of difficult terrain, you feel that the very lands itself had its sight locked on you. Just in the corner of sight can be seen glowing predatory eyes atop the trees peeping before fading, just a moment short from proper observation. Finally, you reached what seems to be a garden lined with white marble pillars and statues of elvish depiction. At the center of it all is what seems to be a birdbath, also made of marble, filled with crystal clear water reflecting the lunar lights. Sure enough without surprise you find Elder Moera nearby, tending to some flowers. On the contrary to your reaction, she seems shocked at finding you here of all places.

"Huma-! Ambassador Questus... what brings you here so late in the night? To my knowledge your kind is not nocturnal, barring select few."

"I was here under orders given to me, and by the quickness of the messenger I presume it is your fellow elf, Elder Moera. I was told to follow the faerie lights, that the elder awaits. Might I presume it was you?", you say, keeping a low and respectful tone.

"No... as a matter of fact I did not give you those orders nor had any intention for my men attend to you this night.", her monotone reply echoes throughout the garden.

She then returned her focus to her flowers, a row of what seems to be lilies, the tip of each petal faintly hinting to a deep red, yet the rest are snow white reflecting the silver moonlight of night. You're left to stand there at your own devices much to your bewilderment.

"Enchanting isn't it, Ambassador? These little ones right here only blooms at full moon. Just a little disturbance in the soil and it could kill the plant whole, wilt its beauty without hesitation. Your kind won't ever, if not rarely gaze your eyes on such beauty. Your soil are detached from mother Earth, sullied and devoid of her grace free to be melded in your own perverse image."

Walking back and forth, you observe that the circle of land that is the garden houses a wide variety of flora, ranging from high maintenance to previously regarded extinct and only ever referenced textually in passing over the span of centuries. You dare not go any closer than an eyeshot though, fearing for the fragility of these plant lives. In between admiring the beauty of this place, you replied to her remarks on human behavior.

"Us humans, we have our own marvels to show, not just what we can grow out of the land. The world don't revolve around how a man can plow the earth after all, at least in my opinion, Elder Morae."

"Spoken like a human, Ambassador Questus. Very... disgustingly so.", her voice losing her calm, giving way to contempt.

"If you live as long as I did, you will have a knack for seeing deception in words, every hidden intentions. At this moment I cannot say if you are lying, but it is clear as day you did on our first meeting."

The moment those words fell out of her mouth, shivers runs down your spine. Your instincts scream that you're in danger. Sounds of predators around the garden intensifies, feral eyes peer out of the dark.

"You are hiding something from me. I do not know what, but I have the power to wring out those truths from your dying breath."

The midnight wind itself seems more vicious, the tall high elf woman's garb fluttering in the wind with her back facing the moon glares at you with malicious intent. You're surrounded and against a powerful assailant.

"But I would not."

The heavy atmosphere dissipates as suddenly as they came. Elder Moera regains her clam demeanor and continues.

"I would not deny my people respite from bloodshed after these long years of violence and death. It is not my place to do so, especially under such shoddy suspicion."

Raising her arm, an owl flew from the trees and landed on her arm.

"Ambassador Questus, take this bird of prey. It will guide you back to your dwelling. Sleep soundly. Our peace depends on your ability to contribute."

She turned away to return to attending to her flowers, dismissing your presence without any regards for your position in the previous exchange. The owl she had summoned perched on your shoulder, tilting its head slightly to the side as if asking whether you're ready to go or not.

Sure enough, you embarked back with the nocturnal avian guiding the way, flying ahead. Midway however, the rush of primal instinct returns. You are being hunted, but this time its different. Then it felt as if the land is threatening you, but clear as day now the danger is no wild animal. It's aim in pursuing you is not for sustenance or territorial enforcement, but something much more malevolent. You feel as if no matter how fast your move, the hunter inches closer methodically with ease. Turning your head, you see...!

A large shadow is descending upon you from the treetops! A steel blade glints in contact with the moonlight. Before you can react, you're already pinned down. Before the assassin's sword could reach your throat though, you caught their hands just merely inches away from ending your life. With one mighty push, you launch him off your body.

Both you and your assailant rise up as quickly as possible, recovering footing and balance. This time however, the element of surprise is not on their side. You're not unarmed either. Out of your person, an elven crafted dagger, meant to be planted evidence, was pulled out. You take a forward stance, ready to receive and parry your opponent's advance.

Your enemy is not so foolish to rush at you however, seeing as you're quite proficient in combat. Both you and them circle each other for a while, not willing to make the first move. Eventually, the assassin concedes and lunged forward. The Blow was deflected, but the edge hit your sword arm, injuring it. This back and forth exchange continues. Speed and range is in the assassin's side, but you staying on the defensive circumvents this odds ever so slightly. You even manage to get a few shallow stabs. Still, you can only last so long before a mortal wound was inflicted. A stab was delivered on your chest, pushing you down on the ground.

Consciousness gradually fades as you succumb to pain before certain doom. Nearby, you hear a voice, speaking in elvish, you can only presume. Then it all fades into black.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You woke up, your eyes adapting to the dim lighting of whatever room you're in currently. Setting your upper body upright is an arduous task considering the damage dealt on you, which decidedly isn't some bad dream unfortunately. The wound had been bandaged, though you're left with but a pair of pants in some cold and damp cell. First you were almost assassinated, now imprisonment?

Another surprise came when a familiar face visited you. Vanari, with a somber face arrives behind the bars between you and sweet sweet freedom accompanied by some other elven soldiers. What do you say to him?

"W-what's going on? Vanari? Why am I here?"

"You are under suspicion as an enemy of Faeheimr and her people. As your representative in the elven field of justice, I am obliged to declare the charges pressed upon you.", he said somberly.

Rushing to the bars and clinging to it, keeping your face near, you exasperatedly asked: "What charges? I'm innocent! As a matter of fact I was assaulted last night!"

"That is not what our soldiers found though."

He looked away, as if unable to comprehend that you would do anything stated on the parchment he's holding.

"Last night, you, Questus Anonymous had assaulted and murdered Elder Moera in cold blood, weapons in hand when her guards saw her lifeless body beneath your feet. You put up a fight, but was finally subdued. That... is what was written."

You looked down, kneeling, not sure of how to react to this turn of event. On one hand, peace had been effectively broken, but you're liable to lose your head like this!

"A part of me is disgusted with myself. Of course, how can I trust a human of all things so quickly. But a part of me want to believe that you are not guilty of any of these. No! I refuse to acknowledge that you're even capable of killing an Elder of all people! It will be hard, but we might just prove your innocence, with a bit more time and effort."

Vanari's hand rests on your shoulder past the metal bars, as if to lighten up your spirit. The person he's trying to comfort feels a different way however. How do you make use of this situation.

"Thank you for your trust Vanari. I did not kill the Elder, and I intend to bring truth to light! Justice will be served for Elder Moera, Vanari!"

The elf expression shot up to a smile.

"Yes! Well said, Sir Questus! Now, let's get you out of here and to the court. We should be able to buy some more time to gather more evidence after today's proceedings."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The elven court of law resolves disputes between two party by having a trusted person unaffiliated in any way with either party to act as the judge. For example, when two clans are feuding, a judge is elected from a third clan that is agreed upon by both the accuser and the accused. However, your case is special and concerns the safety of their realm as a whole. The death of one of Valenmarch's twelve elders means one clan is left in chaos and instability that would affect the entire nation. As such, five of the remaining eleven elders rose up as the judge of this case. Vanari had raised a suggestion to send a letter of this incident first to the Gregorians in front of the elders on your behalf, but with the situation getting tense by the second justice have to be dealt as swiftly as possible. To nobody's surprise there are quite a few calling for your head on a pike currently, bu you're safely escorted to a circular room, oversaw by the aforementioned five elders as judges and a panel of juries glaring.

[Cont.]
>>
>>3432662
The trial begins with one of the Elders declaring it, so Vanari says. The trial was done in a large hall with walls composed of trees, curving inwards at the top to form a roof. The light of the sun escapes the cracks of treetop leaves, blinding you with the midday sun. Standing with their back facing the light, it is hard to discern the faces of the judges. You suspect this is as symbolic as it is intentional in elven culture.

"The accused, Questus Anonymous, shall be brought forth for judgement! Walk forth and face justice!", a voice from the judges' panel declared. You of course complied.

Arm still bound behind your back, you meekly walked, face upward defiantly facing the Elders.

"The light of truth reveal all deception, human! State your side of the story, and we shall we what lies behind your words!"

A ball of light was cast from the palm of the middlemost Elder. Like a soap bubble, it descends slowly in front of you, stopping just a feet away from your front. The Elders want to know what you did last night. There's no such thing as a spell that can truly see through lies. If one truly believes something, it will draw out a contradictory positive, at least from what you've seen of human wizardry. You can try lying, tell half truths or the whole story.

>Tell them you were taking a walk last night and did not even meet the Elder before being attacked without warning. (Lie)

As long as we don't reveal our true motives, we're golden. Everything we say should be 100% true, the trick is to not tell them the entire story. Then we technically won't be lying and the magic ball won't suspect shit.

You told them everything, from the mysterious messenger, the lights that guided you to Elder Morae's garden and the subsequent attempt on your life. It provoked no reaction from the truth-scrying magic ball, which faded into nothingness. The judges whispered to each other before continuing the trial.

"There is no deception in his words. he is telling the truth... or so it seems! But circumstances beg to differ..."

You returned to your side of the court. Vanari is smiling, perhaps his confidence in your innocence is bolstered. One of the judges began reciting the murder scenario, the official report of what happened as of last night.

"You, Questus Anonymous was found guilty of assassinating Elder Morae, of clan Indaris. Wielding an enchanted dagger with distinct human craftsmanship, you murdered her in cold blood, but her scream attracted her guards. Rushing to her aid, they found her beneath your feet, dead. Resisting arrest, you finally succumbed to your injuries and fainted."

Murmurs can be heard from the juries. What you can hear includes elvish curse words and jeers.

In elven tongue, the judges call for the first witness, one of the soldiers that supposedly apprehended you last night.

"My name is Toril, of clan Indaris! I was one of Elder Morae's guard last night and the first to arrive on the scene, here to testify against this Gregorian mongrel!"

The crowds cheers on his bold statement, but you're in no state to argue.

"Silence! Toril, state what you saw last night!"

---------------
What I saw
---------------

"O-okay! What I saw last night. I was to accompany her ladyship on Elder Morae's visit to her personal gardens along with three others. Admiring a rare flower of hers that only bloomed on full moon, as I was told. The following few hours was silent, as any of the Elder's visit to the garden. Suddenly, I hear her ladyship screaming in pain!"

"So, I rushed before anyone else could. There I saw this demon, plunging his blade deep into Elder Moera's stomach! The monster!"

"He tried to run, but with a single strike, I was able to take him down! My only shame was I could not flay this murderer right there and then!"

END

The crowd is restless. Some are already calling for the verdict to be laid already, yet Vanari remained calm under these circumstances. he seemed to have something in mind.

"Sir Questus... did you get anything he said?"

"Huh?"

"There was contradictions in his statements. I can feel it."

"HOLD IT!"

The court went silent and turned their attention to whoever that shouted just now. To their shock, it is Vanari, pointing his finger at Toril.

"What? What's wrong?"

Your companion walked slowly, recounting the witness's points in an exaggerated manner.

"The witness states that they took down the accused with but a single strike, this is a falsehood, your honor!"

"Are you accusing me of lying then?"

Vanari shakes his head disapprovingly.

"Not quite, but the evidence I have states the opposite of what you have claimed! The truth is right here, on Sir Questus's body!"

Murmurs and whispering was heard among the juries, exasperated by Vanari's attempt at defending you. Arriving in front of the judges yet again, Vanari showcased your wounds for all to see.

"The injuries sustained on the accused suggests prolonged combat and struggle. The defendant's right arm shows signs of slashes and cuts, which makes the witness's claim of felling Sir Questus with a single blow a lie!"

"AAGHHHH!", Toril shouted, shocked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3R8tkvlAlk

"These wounds couldn't have been added recently too, looking at the scabs that have already formed on the defendant's body. Furthermore, You say that there were four guards accompanying Elder Moera, yet somehow Sir Questus approached her without any of you noticing. Either you're all criminally incompetent, or you're hiding something from us!"

Toril girts his teeth in anger, clenching his fist and looking down to the ground. After a few moments of pondering, the judges start talking.

"Toril, repeat your recounting of last night's incident. This time, get your facts right, or we will be forced to abstain you from being further involved in this trial."

"Your honor, if possible I would also want the witness to add on where he was at the night of the incident and the detail of Sir Questus's apprehension."

"Accepted. Toril, if you may."

---------------
What I saw
---------------

"Alright, for real this time! The truth is, none of us are allowed to enter her ladyship's garden anymore after a certain... accident. It is our duty to protect her though, so we settled to wait for her at the entrance. It's always like this each time she tends to her plants!"

"Of course, then comes Elder Moera's screams. But I saw it with my own eyes, this murderer plunging his sword through her ladyship!"

"I then charged at him. He put up a fight, but my blade reached his stomach eventually. The rest is as you all already know. We patched him up and threw him into his cell!"

"OBJECTION!"

Once again, those gathered in the court are shocked by the sudden shouting. Once again, all attention are turned to Vanari who once again is pointing his finger at Toril.

"What is it this time?", Toril said, looking annoyed.

"Your honor! There's a contradiction in the witness's statement!"

Toril was once again shocked and taken aback by Vanari's accusation. The judges motioned Vanari to be quick about it.

"You see, I seriously doubt that the witness is even telling the truth. Might I recall that you said you saw the murderer plunging his sword into Elder Moera. This is what you said right?"

"S-so?! What about it?"

"Here comes the contradiction. The murder weapon in official report.... is a dagger!"

"AAAAGGGHHHH!"

Murmurs and whispers once again fills the court. The judges demand further elaboration of this line of questioning.

"That is- not to add- that the fatal wound inflicted on Sir Questus's body is at the chest, not the stomach. This is contradictory to the witness's testimony where he claimed to stab Sir Questus in the stomach instead!"

Cold sweat visibly forms on Toril's face. This time your companion really cornered him.

"I- but! This is...."

"Your Honor! Toril's testimony had been revealed to be faulty from the start! I request that he be expelled from further involving himself in this trial for outright disregard of his duty as a witness to an Elder's murder of all things!"

The judges starts whispering something ot each other. One or two even shows sign of agitation. The juries are no better, restlessly either starting to believe your innocence or chiding Vanari for defending you.

"In light of this rather unfortunate event, we approve of the defendant's demand of exempting Toril's further participation in this case."

"NOOOOOO!", wailed the elf.

"This trial shall be postponed to a late date. In that time, I hoped that those responsible will procure more reliable evidence and testimonies to be brought up against the defendant. The same can be said vice versa. I hereby declare that court is adjourned."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By evening, you are released and back at your designated house, albeit cornered by two more elven warrior. If it is any comfort, Vanari's here to make sure no unsanctioned execution happen any time soon. The knights accompanying you were as expected furious of the elves' treatment of Gregorian ambassador, but dared not do anything recklessly.

"iI we want to prove you're Innocent, we need to find more evidence that points to that! I suggest searching for clues at the site of murder, or question those that saw the murder happening. Well, by we, I mean just me. You're on house arrest Sir Questus."

You can suggest where or who Vanari should start at.

With all said and done, Vanari goes along on his way to the scene of the crime to collect evidence, including the owl which you suspected to be the Elder's familiar. This however leaves you cooped up for the rest of the evening in your house.

You're not alone however, as the knights accompanying you on this journey had also been put in house arrest under the suspicion of collaboration in the murder. Understandably, some are outraged by this. However, pf the ten knights here with you there are still a few who are level headed enough to wait for further instructions and keep their brethren in line. Namely, among these more responsible of nobles are Sir Oswald, an accomplished soldier, cavalier and second-born of the esteemed house Prius. He's the first to approach you about this incident as opposed to succumbing to emotion, asking for explanation. You complied, seeing no reason not to.

"Is that so....", the knight rubs his rather pronounced and clean shaven jawline.

"Indeed. You do not think I have the power to commit such acts of cowardice do you not, Sir Oswald? Though we've never interacted much before this peace arrangement, you cannot possibly think a diplomat could ever hope to assassinate an elven clan Elder or all people. I've heard stories of one swiping hundreds of soldiers with but a mere wave of hand!"

Cross-armed, he sits in front of you and frowning, as if wrecking his brain to make sense of this sudden turn of events.

"Your logic is sound, ambassador. Something strange is happening behind the scenes, yet we are powerless to uncover whatever nefarious plot awaiting us. Still, what is important now is we should tread lightly in every step, and to not show hesitation and lack of determination in the face of adversary. You will find me and my men more than willing to back you up in this trying times."

Smiling lightly, the knight rose up and pats you on the shoulder three times. He paused for a moment, and looks at you straight in the eye. You- of course- was bewildered by his strange mannerism. Sir Oswald finally let your shoulders free from his grasp before moving back to his men. Later, an elf messenger came to inform your party that the knights are to be questioned for the the trial's continuation tomorrow. They complied, though bitterly. The worst had yet to come however....

Day of the trial....

You and Vanari are now back in the elven hall of justice. Your companion sadly could not acquire anything that would directly prove your innocence. However, the owl that lead you back home the night before was successfully acquired. The owl was indeed one of Elder Moera's familiar, and her kin is reluctant to let it fall to the supposed murderer's hand. Vanari convinced them otherwise, someway or another.

"The trial for the murder of Clan Indaris's Elder is hereby resumed! The prosecution hereby demanded to call in evidence against the accused, Sir Questus Anonyme of the Gregorian League!"

Out of the only hallway leading to the court, a two people came out. One looks like an elf, but her appearance brings much contrast to what is usual of her kind. Dark skin, ashen gray hair, and with a confident smile. The admittedly statuesque stunner walks gracefully into the court. her appearance provoked the opposite effect that you would expect though. The crowd starts getting uneasy, even scowling at the prosecution. The next one that follows did not help you or their mood too. It's Sir Oswald on the opposing side!

"The prosecution presents Sir Oswald Prius, Gregorian knight captain to testify against Questus Anonyme, your honor!", the dark-skinned elf declared proudly.

"A Drow.... and Sir Oswald too!", Vanari whispered, gritting himself.

Do you have anything to say against this sudden act of betrayal?

"Kar'sha, of the thirteenth clan reunited. I wish you luck, Sir Questus, however much it will help you in today's trial.", she exclaims, performing a full bow in a pretense of respect.

The thirteenth clan reunited.... you've heard stories related to that. There was once a group of elves banished from Valenmarch many centuries ago far before even the oldest city state of the Gregorian League was ever conceived for their cruelty and lust for power. These exiles dug deep into earth, finding respite in darkness and caverns under soil. Their bitterness and anger, ever plotting vengeance against their kind earned them the curse from their former deities. Marked in a certain way that does not detract from the conventional beauty of elves, but warns their above-ground kin of their past sins. Dark skin and ashen hair, they worship enemies of the elven pantheon and are masters of the dark arts, not to mention manifesting random clan talents due to their predecessors being an assortment of elves. Earlier during the Valenmarch-Gregorian war, the thirteenth clan were allowed to dwell in the forests once more to support the elf's side of the conflict. Indeed they were a massive asset, but no more trusted than an average human bey their more fair-skinned kinsmen. The thirteenth clan does not have a name, but is universally referred to as Drows, which in elven tongue means "Guilty". ironic for the "Guilty" to be the one to judge the accused.

As for Sir Oswald.... he's keeping a stone cold face, not even honoring you a look in the eye. You, of course, have no intention to do otherwise either.

"I hereby call Sir Oswald to testify against, the accused, your honor! If you would please, Mr. Knight?", she declared, loud and proud.

Still clad in armor, though unarmed, the knight stood tall in front of the high-seated Elders. Thus he begins his testimony.

"First and foremost, I would like to clear things up. I am not testifying against Questus Anonyme."

This shocks the crowd, but not the prosecution it seems.

"Indeed, I believe Questus is innocent, because the defendant is NOT Questus Anonyme!"

So I've figured it out.

Vanari is ALSO undercover and trying to start a war, and has framed us because it's a good way to restart the war.

We're somehow going to end up teaming up with Vanari (who turns out to be an expert neck-snapper) as both the human pro-war and elf pro-war factions join forces, interspersed with friendly acts of trying to kill each other.

"Nice try, elf scum, I found that venomous scorpion in my bed! Better luck next time!"

Probably not, actually. But what chance have we got of self-brainwashing when we're this close to being gutted by angry knife-ears.
>>
We should try to hold off as much as we can but if we can't hide our identity than I have an idea

Reveal the murder of sir Questus, but then

PLOT TWIST

WE were the assassin sent by the peaceful political party meant to kill the the pro-war' assasin of sir Questus before he could complete his mission, and while we killed the assassin we didn't stop him in time.

The peace talks would be destroyed if the diplomat's death was revealed, so in a spur of the moment we took over his identity in order to get through the talks as best as we could before more actual diplomats were sent to better smooth things out and take over.

Basically the "fuck my side, these assholes are gonna leave me out to dry, I want to live!" path
