Your eye has changed. You see it when you stop and glance at your reflection in the glass Observatory windows, or the reflective surface of a smooth metal wall nearby. Projected from your cloudy iris is a ring of faint light: a never-ending wheel of memory envisaged as a pixilate data stream. Aelriss looks at you, concern wrinkling her brow, and you meet her gaze, examining her for a moment. Her white hooded cloak is wrapped around her shoulders as a luxuriant and majestic comfort, voluminous blonde braid spilling down her front. You wonder, very briefly, how close the perfect appearance of her digital avatar matches her—or you suppose it could be his—real life appearance, but reconcile the notion when a momentary thought affirms that you can’t imagine her any other way.

“Well?” You ask. Aelriss turns to Tatsumaki, standing catatonic and dull-faced nearby.

“Still nothing.” The artificer waves her hand in front of the shorter girl’s face as if to attempt to rouse her back into reality. “She’s totally zonked.”

“You think something happened to her?” Your eye twitches. You need more Celestial Gems. Taking a few steps closer to the group, you fold your arms, leaning forward as though to inspect Tatsumaki. Her usually-grinning face is joyless; the rosy sliver that often lines her cheeks is absent. She stands petrified, vacant of both idle motion and the swaying of breath.

“Outside of the fact that I think she’s been offline for like… less than a few real-time minutes since Kjorikos? I don’t even know what it was like before I met her.” Aelriss purses her lips. “Kind of assumed it was just like this.”

“She knocked out, then.” You respond.

“Maybe? She’s still standing here, which means she’s still linked up.” The artificer frowns. “I’m kind of feeling it myself, and I’ve been on for just as long. Not tired, just—spaced. I don’t even really know what time it is overhead, y’know? Never occurred to me that you could just knock out.”

“Can you?” You ask, after a pause.

“I mean, your brain’s still ticking, right? That’s how we’re playing—we’re conscious, and the program is… interpreting the data we’re sending the rig, I guess.” Aelriss says. “Even if you didn’t need food and stuff, you’d have to stop the connection to rest eventually, or you’d just pass out in-game.”

“The game sends some kind of signal to start that connection, though.”

“So?” Aelriss quirks a brow.

“If it’s putting you to ‘sleep’, can you ever really wake up? Or—can it stop you from ‘waking up’, so you can’t pass out and fall asleep?” You ask. “What do you think would happen if someone just kept you awake so long that…”

“Ashe, I don’t really want to think about this.” The blonde gives a nervous laugh. Your UI pings from a notification, but you’re distracted by the sight that occurs concurrently: the martial artist flickers, vanishing from reality behind a blue scan line that washes over her from head to toe.

> [[ Tatsumaki is offline. ]]
> [[ UI Messenger – Group Chat (Averron City’s Finest) ]]
> [[ Tatsumaki has left chat. ]]

“…and it looks like you’re worrying about nothing, anyway. Just hope she’s feeling alright.” Aelriss says. She opens her own UI menu, thumbing between screens. “Maybe we should take a break too, huh? God only knows how long it’s been.”

“I got stuff I need to take care of as soon as possible, in case you didn’t realize. Plus, do you know how much could happen in the time that’d take with this game’s fucked-up time-scale?” You give Aelriss an incredulous look.

“That’s… a good point. The length of a night’s sleep could be literal days in-game. You could take a day off and come back to an entire different world, or a new political regime, or something equally stupid.” Aelriss tilts her head back at you. “Do you think that’s intentional?”

“Now who’s coming up with conspiracy theories?” You ask.

“I mean it, though—this is legit. Like, maybe that’s why why Liza and Anaximander are so focused on passing their ideology down: so that people can carry out their will in their absence.” Aelriss says.

You’re not sure what to say, since you’re not sure what you believe. She might suggest that there’s people that have figured this game out already. Maybe that’s the case—but if you happened to know any of them, you’re certain that things in Averron would be different than they are now. Your thoughts trend momentarily toward that absence as you look over at Tatsumaki’s empty space in the room. No other game you’ve played before has managed to feel like your friends are disappearing around you.

Perched on Aelriss’s shoulder, Eunoia whistles sweetly.

“We’re going to need a replacement for Tatsumaki.” You bring the discussion back to the topic at hand. “I don’t know what we’re going to be up against down there, and I’d rather go in the company of a full squad.”

“Did you have anyone in mind?” Aelriss asks.

“I was going to ask you.” You reply. “What about Donnel? It’s been a while since we ran with him. Did you want to invite him along?”

Aelriss shakes her head. “The way this run is looking, having him along is almost certain to turn it into a player-versus-player murder-fest. He kind of invites that; it’s just how he is. I already said if that’s the way you’re planning for things to go, then I want out.”

I'm pretty curious about her abilities actually. Plus she knows about the Observers so maybe we can exchange notes a bit

Also what's up with the lack of description on what the Divine spear can do from our memory of the throne? Maybe we have to use it first to know what it does.

Celestial Techniques Available:
Divine Right: Conjure destructive divine spear that can be thrown or plunged into target. While using Memory of the Throne: wield as weapon, or brandish to project powerful waves of force.
Deal and absorb damage in combat to reduce the cooldown of the Celestial Technique. Land a killing blow by impaling the core of a powerful foe to extract Celestial Gems. (Only the least-recently used Celestial Technique will have its cooldown active.)

Browsing the recent forum threads for news, you watch the view of what happened outside the Observatory just a little while ago from multiple angles. Those from further back in the crowd kick in very late in your little scrap, as the players furthest away from the source of the Celestial mandate were quicker than the others to regain their senses, and only a handful of them began recording. The better views are from the Overlook: a cinematic, almost-overhead shot of you being launched skyward by Liza’s jet-assisted revolving throw and blasted dead-center with an airburst rocket.

The sentiments are mixed. The duel, and what little information exists in public about your motivations, has undermined some of the continued effort to change the rich-get-richer ways of Averron City. You know enough to know that there will always be cynics and naysayers. For each one, it seems that there is someone who believes in you, still, or is willing to give the institution you collectively represent the benefit of the doubt. Among them, you know, there are sycophants as well.

only way to beat Asche without artifacts is to repeatedly pummel him with charged elemental hits.

But given how charged elemental hits seem to drain foci until they're out of juice and need replacement, 5k is reaaaaally not worth it.

Nah, there are plenty of other ways. None of them are worth a measly 5k and the risk of dying though.

There is no back exit to the Observatory, but you walk with a crowd. Among them, an officer of the Crimson Guardians, and Freakshow’s own leader. This, you imagine, might cause some PR issues – but you also figure that descending into the Claw and dealing with whatever has the araneids speaking your name will alleviate many others. Those outside the Observatory look at you as you make your way across the plateau, but no one is brave enough to make a move with your entourage as it is. You cross into the PVP zone unharmed, thankful that you have managed to surround yourself with influential allies.

You and your party are far removed from civilization. The air is damp and musty, deep cavern illuminated by faintly-glowing mushrooms sprawling across the walls and dotting the floors. Here, the rock formations are less familiar than those of lower Averron. They are cut from a different type of stone, and ringed or connected by slacking, wispy threads of spiders’ web. You hear skittering as you descend, leading the way into the Claw.

> [[ Underground: Lower Averron – Tethiss’s Claw // PVP Enabled ]]

“Do we have a plan?” Aelriss asks.

“We should act with caution.” Florica responds. “We have closely encountered very few Precursors. Their apparent intelligence is their greatest weapon, more so than any magical abilities they possess.”

“If they’re intelligent, can they be reasoned with?” Nel asks. Kjorikos seemed to have thoughts of his own, as you recall. The notion is troublesome. You’re not sure exactly what you’re dealing with. “You said they’re acting up because you stole something from them, Ashe? Or they believe you did. Can you just give it back?”

Freya looks at you, smirking slightly. Florica gives her a suspicious glance.

“It’d kind of be like putting toothpaste back in a tube.” You respond. “Also I’m not even sure the toothpaste exists anymore.”

“That’s the least appealing metaphor I’ve ever heard, thanks.” Aelriss winces.

“Here to help.” You nod. “Nel, where are we going?”

“The grounds where the Talents were mining are a little ways down this upcoming branch.” The Explorer responds, looking at the projected three-dimensional map on his menu. “But the Claw itself isn’t well-documented. That place called the Calamity Rift is a little ways below us now.”

Aelriss shudders. “I remember—this is about where you must have come out when you fell down that trap door. I hate it down here.”

“You’re not frightened, are you?” Florica affords a little giggle. “Charting new ground would be exciting, I’d have imagined. Perhaps we should consider starting with some of the undocumented areas, if we truly don’t know where we’re going. We’ll scout the branch ceilings for ambush attackers, and ensure that our escape route isn’t cut off by patrols; to do so should be rather trivial with the capabilities we have between us.”

Something stings your breastbone. You cough and sputter, tottering unsteadily and collapsing to your knees. Nel and Aelriss practically jump to support you at either side, while Florica takes a step around. She seems to keep her eyes on Freya, who smiles and takes a step back, lifting her empty hands defensively.

“Ashe, what’s wrong? Are you okay?” Nel asks.

You feel as though something turns your head, gaze drifting to the mouth of an adjacent branch; the light from within calls to you. Something intrudes in your mind, competing for space with the mystic eye. Strife Memoriam’s mere presence seems to struggle back against it, if only by virtue of occupying a significant share of any available storage capacity.

“I am wanted in her splendor,” You say, gurgling up a response from somewhere deep in your throat. “Alone.”

I dunno, I'm actually rather hopeful myself.

Why go through all this trouble if they just wanted us dead?
>>
>>3438632
No as in, the Fortune Teller literally told us "you will not have a fair trial"
>>
“Tethiss is the Araneid Queen, and rivals the Precursors in her power and intelligence. She is more capable than the lesser araneids – and weaves shadow magic like her own viziers. They organize themselves through a hive-mind connected to her.” The fortune-teller says, nodding sagely at you. “She knows you have stolen from her, Ascheritte. You must bleed every drop of her life from your body if you wish to be judged fairly in her court.”

“…What?”

“The silk of araneids is a useful crafting material, as it is very light but surprisingly strong when properly worked. It would be worthwhile to collect some if you wish to expand your wardrobe. The araneids will utilize their own silk to craft ranged weapons, as well as pitfall traps. Be wary of those, as well as the true spiders who live commensally with araneids, if you seek to traverse the Claw.”

“Freya,” You turn. “I need you to drain my life.”

“Oh?” Freya smiles. The Hand of the Herald is revealed with the flexing of her fingers, and it looks like you and Florica both wonder the extent of the power that is held within.

“Your ability kind of started this mess.” You suggest. “I’m hoping you can fix it as well.”

“Very well, but it may not be pleasant.” Freya says. “Give me your hand. Based on the understanding you’ve afforded, I’ll need to take as much as I can back.”

> [[ HP: 33 / 35 ]]

When her cold fingers settle in your palm, you feel as though you have been opened to an abyss. You cannot see what, if anything, lies within, but—it knows you. It vies to snuff your light. You feel your life begin to drain away…

> [[ HP: 30 / 35 ]]

You are lightheaded. Some force within you is urging you to pull away or lash out at Freya. You are unsure if it is your own survival drive, Strife Memoriam’s hold in your mind, or Tethiss’s continuing influence fighting against the force that started this to begin with.

> [[ HP: 26 / 35 ]]

Freya maintains eye contact with you. You feel the strength of her grip grow, perhaps involuntarily, as the Herald’s Hand adjusts to the sudden influx of power. Motes of bloody scarlet leak from her darkened skin, swirling upwards and burning away. Florica holds the Diabolique at the ready. It looks like she could be preparing to make a move, though you can’t tell if she’s planning to reach for her sword or just read a passage. Knowing her, either could be disastrous.

Your knees quiver, and you start to fall. The abyss holds you close. Your consciousness is tumbling into a black skein that kills gods. Freya begins to let go as your flesh begins to fail you. She gives you a look as though to affirm you’ve had enough. You recall: every drop of impure life must be taken from your body if you are to bargain with Tethiss. You pull away, forcing yourself to rise up from the darkness despite your fading strength.

⟦ LESSER ART: GHO VA XEAD ⟧

You hear Florica’s voice echo, alien syllables from within the depths of the Diabolique augmented by some Celestial power. The next moment is a blur. Her hand flashes, wrist flicking up with an eerie glow; motes of earthen dust form a tornado around her forearm, compressing into sharp rock shards that leave trails of crimson light through the air as they whiz forward like a spray of bullets. Something wet splashes your face. There’s a cloud of discolored blood in the air. The abyss is sealed away as Freya’s grip loosens. She falls, upper body twisting sickeningly, and hits the hard ground. You fall as well, collapsing into a sitting position.

> [[ Affected By: Combat Regeneration ]]
> [[ HP: 7 / 35 ]]

“He asked,” Freya slurs. Her jawline has been torn open by a shard grazing her cheek; there’s one sticking out of her collarbone, and a bloody patch above her belly where a third shot passed completely through. But her wounds, horrifying as they are, appear superficial. The energy she’s siphoned from you is knitting her flesh back together at an alarming rate. She stands, and reaches up to pull the stone from her shoulder with a gruesome noise. “I was done.”

⟦ LESSER ART: ASKAR VINNAR ⟧

The language offends you as it meets your ears. You feel the air pressure around you shift as you struggle to your feet. Freya’s eyes swirl, gaze appearing momentarily vacant. She reaches for her scythe as her balance fails her; the ashen-skinned girl stumbles backwards as she swings her weapon in front of her, fading into a dizzy collapse. Her head hits the rocks.

“Ascheritte, she was going to kill you.” Florica says, teeth grit. “I saw…”

“…hh? Wasggoing-g to sth-op…” Freya’s voice is drunken and dizzy, blood dribbling off her lips. “Nnh… yivelosst – your. Mind…”

Eunoia spreads her wings. Aelriss gives you a deeply concerned look, Nel taking a step away. Pages of the Diabolique turn on their own while Florica reaches for her saber.

Unusually-familiar screaming issues from Freya’s wounds. She swipes the Hand across her field of view as if to push the whole of the world aside; borrowed life becomes boundary-light, formed into a hideous claw that lurches from just out of sight. It collides with Florica, catching her off-guard, and sending her careening across the cavern. The Diabolique flies from her hand, sliding a distance away from her.

“Ascheritte, please.” Freya struggles to stand, balancing on her scythe. She looks to the cavern behind her, then to the ceiling high above, as if checking for enemies. “Tell her to stop. All of us are going to die down here.”

“Enough, guys.” You say, raising hands to stay the two of them. Eunoia touches down on your shoulder, looking around the cavern with you. Freya is making a slow recovery, while Florica stumbles to recover her grimoire, clearly rattled by the fall. “Please, call off whatever this is.”

“Another second of that would have killed you, Ascheritte.” Florica says, making her way cautiously toward the group. “I know her power. At that point, she would have defeated the rest of us with ease.”

“Florica, you—you’re completely hopeless.” Freya says, frowning. “No matter how I try, there’s nothing I can say that will change any of you.”

“Fuck off!” Nel shouts, face flushed. “You guys are gonna kill us all over your dumb politics!”

“He’s trying to say this isn’t the time.” You gently amend, turning to the Crimson Sage. “Florica, I appreciate the help, but—if you two keep fighting while I’m in front of Tethiss you’re going to be the ones that killed me.”

“This was a mistake.” Aelriss says, sitting down on the rocks nearby. “Coming this far out of town with enough bounty money split between two people to build a new Averron. We’re not gonna make it, are we, Ashe? We’re just a walking fuckin’ pinata in a spider hole.”

“We’re going to make it, okay?” You respond. “Nel, Ael—make sure these two don’t kill each other while I’m gone, alright?”

“Like I can do anything about it.” Nel huffs.

A healing draught and Eunoia’s birdsong restore you more-or-less to form. Tethiss, you presume, is waiting still—but you cannot feel her intruding in your mind. Still, she has made her request of you.

“Nonsense—you’re a capable bachelor, Nel. I’m sure you can keep ‘em entertained.” You respond, waving the group off.

“W-what. Ashe.” Nel says, turning away.

You follow what lingering intuition remains into the cavernous maze. Light darkens, leaving lines of bioluminescent flora that guide you through the dark. You can hear skittering around you, and see red eyes in the distance. Viewed through the light that projects from your eye, you can see the great shapes of araneid warriors moving in the distant dark, and passing far beneath you. For your sake, you hope that the creature you seek can be bargained with.

> [[ Underground: Tethiss’s Claw – Arachedonia Amphitheatre // PVP Enabled ]]

A makeshift bridge connects you to the heart of Tethiss’s domain, a place that looks somehow regal in its savage dressings. The araneids subsist in their environment. Tethiss has sculpted a nest from the existing architecture and made a home of it, rather than raise a tower from the earth as Kjorikos did with his artifice. Twitching silk cocoons line wall-corners, housing food and spider spawn. Great stone idols are carved with images of arachnids. You pass myriad hovels carved from the walls and enter a great hall, a confusing tangle of silk and stone. You expect a throne room, and instead find yourself before an altar littered with dusty bones and fuzzy exoskeletons that make your skin crawl to behold. The hall trends upwards, stone floor curving up as though retreating away from you toward the web-wreathed stalactites above. You can see a nest surrounded by eight shadowed columns of stone.

You sense a dangerous presence.

The Last Argument of Kings vibrates angrily as you raise the whetstone to it. It seems as though this will have no effect.

“Tethiss.” You call, sword in hand. “I’m here. I know your kind can speak normally—you’re going to have to do that.”

Glistening, oily purple spills from the dark of the ceiling above the distant nest; you watch, preparing yourself for some incoming attack. It spreads like a liquid through the crevices in the stone surface beneath, stiffening into a reticulated web of shadow. Threads of black are cast across the ground in a wide circle; shrouded in the dusky shade, her shape rises from the earth as if sculpted from the web itself. Her hair is white and wispy, head adorned with chitinous horns; her upper-body is near-bare, too-long arms connecting clawed hands to rounded shoulders.

Tethiss’s arachnid body is adorned with ceremonial armor; it is massive all its own, like a spider queen dressed in war-banners. Her eyes, when she opens them to look at you, are deep and expressive.

“You were wise to cleanse yourself of my blood.” She gives a fanged smile, approaching you slowly. Despite her enormous size, she is eerily silent where her feet fall on the black web. “I’d otherwise have put you to the lash. Pleasure to meet you, Ascheritte. “Did it?” You ask, rhetorically. “Why were you so obsessed with cleansing me, then? You have caused me a lot of trouble.”

Aasiva.” She spins eerie purple thread between her fingers, dangling a round of sinister-seeming cord and stretching it in her hands as if to test its tensile strength. You have no doubt she was being decidedly literal and quite serious in her intention to ‘put you to the lash’. You watch her carefully, remaining ready to move, but are content when she seems to stop a short distance away, deciding she’s close enough for polite conversation.

“What’s that?” You ask.

“’Between’. My age is showing, I suppose.” Tethiss gives a humorless little laugh. Her cadence is uncanny; her manner of speaking is a close simulacrum of humanity. “The power you used to drink from us is the same power that steals the light from gods. I am flattered that you think so highly of me, but whether or not we are enemies in this moment—I reject this power. So long as you have cleansed yourself of the influence from between, we may speak on civil terms.”

Your squint indicates scrutiny, betraying your attempt to appear impassive. You take a step back, still, concerned by the extent of her power and of her artificial intelligence. She said she’s been having thoughts; the very notion is disconcerting. “You said I gave you thoughts. What kind of thoughts were those?”

“Ambition. I have seen your visions and felt your desire.” Only when the araneid queen corrects her posture do you realize she’s been slouching. Idly she plays at the lash in her fingers. “I believe that we can help each other. You and your family—my brood and I.”

“How?”

“I want to go to the Earthsea.”

The 'between' seems to be her term for Observer influence. I'm put in mind of how we've encountered Observers directly "between" logging in and materialising in Averron.

“What do you mean by ‘between’?” You ask.

“Act to your intelligence, Ascheritte. My brood suffers no fools.” Tethiss tilts her head, silken hair spilling from her shoulders as her human head sways forward. “You know of those that wait between heaven and earth, between light and dark—between where you can see and where you cannot.”

“…Boundaries.” You nod. “That’s what you’re talking about?”

“I suppose.” The araneid frowns. “Why so inquisitive?”

“I’m trying to wrap my head around this. That said: you’re suggesting we work together, correct?” You respond. “Why do you want to go to the Earthsea?”

“I want to become a spider, Ascheritte.” Tethiss says. You are momentarily captivated, as she peers at you. There is a sparkle of childlike desire in her eyes. “Eightfold are the paths to the underworld throne. This is a destiny that calls to me. I want to nest in the Earthsea and become a great spider that never grows old. You are the one that can help me.”

“This…” You stumble. “…Sounds like something I’d have to talk over with the others. What exactly are you offering?”

“We possess knowledge, and you possess the benefit of innovation. I offer non-aggression, such that your family may walk among my halls on your way to the Earthsea.” Tethiss lets the lash dangle at her side. “Once we know of your trust, we will show you where you can burrow to reach a gate: a pathway that will allow you to break through to the underworld without disturbing those trapped in exile, or those defending the throne.”

“I should say: we will not be betrayed. Your kind and mine must trust one another if we are to fulfill our ambitions. Should the fighting continue, then whatever may happen will happen. But you took the blood from my veins, and in your mind I saw the notion that the way of this world can be changed. I saw a future that I must realize.”

“You want to become a spider that never grows old? Does that mean you age now?” You ask. “I couldn’t tell—or at least, your years don’t show.”

“I never knew flattery was a specialty of your kind.” Tethiss quirks a brow.

“Not all of us. Like I said.” Your stance relaxes somewhat. “The between are your enemies too, correct? Can you help us defeat them?”

“We cannot fight them in the same way you can.” Tethiss says. “This does not mean we suffer the presence of those corrupted by their influence—and our knowledge can be of use to you in your own battle to drive them from this world. I feel as though you are searching me for purpose. You want to agree to our terms.”

You wonder how you’re going to manage to prove to Canderence that you’ve solved the problem. Forging a spoken agreement with Tethiss doesn’t so quickly clear your name. Not just any silk, we'd need something woven into a design that, whilst mundane, is beyond what human hands could achieve to prove we've come to an agreement with something else.

Perhaps it spells out a message supporting our words.

>>3440732
Way I see it our best chances are to have the Averron Alliance agree to a pact with Tethis and then say they'll gank anyone who acts against the pact.
If you wanted to magically enforce it you're looking at having Freya inject everyone with spiderblood desu, and that's not remotely practical even if you ignored any other issues

“We can discuss the particulars of our agreement once we’re more certain.” Tethiss says. “I understand, at least, that I’ve caused you inconvenience. The least I can do for now is spare you the trouble of another perilous journey. For now, though—see to the other heads of your house. That spell will last, but it is not permanent.”

You nod. Sheathing the Last Argument, you depart from Tethiss’s chamber and make your way back to your party. They’re waiting for you in the same place. Nel and Aelriss are sitting together on the rocks, the latter browsing the forums on her UI. Florica and Freya are apart from one another, and a distance away from the other two.

“That was less eventful than I imagined.” Florica says. “What happened?”

“Tethiss wants to forge a non-aggression pact. Apparently, she wants to get to the Earthsea as part of her destiny to become a, uh, big spider.” You respond. “Being in my mind gave her ‘thoughts’, she says. She knows we’re going, and wants to form a mutually beneficial alliance to get there.”

“You’re going to let her go with you to the Earthsea so she can become a giant spider.” Aelriss says, looking flatly at you. “That sounds completely legit.”

“The araneids raise true spiders, and worship them as icons of perfection.” Florica says. “Apparently, that worship extends quite far. Do you believe she can be trusted?”

“She gave me an icon that allows her to communicate with us temporarily. I’m going to bring it to Liza and see what she has to say.” You respond. “What do you think? Do you want to talk to her?”

“I am unsure.” Florica says. “I wish to partake of her knowledge, however. To turn the might she has to offer to our allegiance is an enticing proposal, but her intelligence seems troublesome. She requested you personally, that said. I’ll wait to approach her until I’m certain of the terms of this agreement.”

“We can barely trust the real people we know to behave.” Nel huffs. “I’d almost rather have her on our side. At least she’ll behave predictably.”

You afford a subtle frown. You’re not so sure.

“Is that everything, then? This whole trip was kind of a bust.” Nel says.

“Not true.” Florica’s gaze narrows at Freya; the latter remains silent. “Ascheritte needed our protection. Should we manage to forge an alliance with this entity, our cooperation will be to thank.”

We can kind of relate to the struggle with Observer power due to our memory of the exile but we should also remember that their power twists and corrupts the forms and minds of those who use it. “Freya.” You turn to the silver-haired girl. “Tethiss brought up the nature of the power you use—how your power of lifedrain is derived from the power the Observers used to drain the power of the Celestials.”

Freya quirks a brow. You see Florica move out of the corner of her eye, and turn to watch her draw the Diabolique into her lap.

“I assumed as much.” Florica says. “And you still believe she can be trusted, Ascheritte? You put her life in her hands a moment ago, and she would have taken it from you had I not intervened.”

“Conveniently you forget that this gift was granted to me by Celestial investiture.” Freya says, flexing the fingers of the Herald’s Hand. “This Artifact has the same power over me as yours does over you, and as Florica’s tome of dark magic over her. But you… hate me, because you know for certain the power I hold.”

“The Observers are our enemies, Freya. They’ve tried to take us out and they’ll do worse. There’s so much going on that we don’t understand—and you’re apparently a conduit to their influence?”

“I don’t trust it in the least.” Florica says. You look to her, and she stores her grimoire away when she sees your gaze drawn to it. “How could the Celestials grant you the power of the Observers—and why would they? What we know best is of their corruptive power, and how they dwell within those that accept their gift. I plan to tell the Alliance that you have become a puppet to their will.”

“This art has availed me much, you know. I have it to thank for making it this far, and plan to nurture it—such that I may use it against its makers. If we’re to believe the story of this world, the power of Observers has killed the gods once before. But you cast me out for knowing. You reject all those who challenge your own reality, then go to fight the Observers with Celestial powers that have failed to destroy them once already.” Freya says. She turns her hand over as if assessing her own discolored flesh, and the runic mark that adorns her palm. “I want to believe in you, Ascheritte. But it makes perfect sense that one so predicated on recreating memories would be borne to repeat history.”

The mystic eye burns, threads of fire seeping into your skull. You grit your teeth, stepping back. Florica’s hand settles on the hilt of her saber.

“I’m so sick of listening to you guys!” Nel shouts. “You’re all being fucking controlled by your Artifacts! I thought you were better than this, but everything everyone’s saying about you is right!”

“Nel, chill out.” Aelriss stands, taking a step towards you. “This isn’t working. Can we have this talk somewhere else?”

“We’re not going to have another chance.” Florica says.

“Freya. I was able to will my memory of the past to change, you know—using Celestial power. The Observers are targeting individuals. They’ve tried taking Ayla and I out whenever we log in, and they might do worse to you now that you have their gift. Just know that there’s ways to control and overpower them, before they grow too strong—and that we don’t need them as much as it might seem.”

“I’ll keep your words in mind.” Freya replies. “But you’re undoubtedly correct about one thing.”

You make your way up the natural stone bridges and paths that lead up the side of a rocky wall stretching deep into the earth: a quick route down to Tethiss’s Claw, recently cleared of the dangers of the hunting grounds. Across a great crevasse to your left, you can see familiar structures: connecting tunnels sculpted carefully and marked with lights by miners, forming the road back to Averron City. It stands to reason you’ve got business there, but it might just be best to have Liza and Canderence meet you at the Observatory—considering that’s been the closest thing you’ve had thus far to a personal base of operations. Nel is seated against a rock spire ahead.

“Nel!” You call. “Sorry—I think we all had some stuff we had to air out. What all have people been saying about me?”

“Ashe, not now!” Nel speaks in a hoarse whisper. “There’s people across the cliff!”

There’s a harsh crack in your ear, tailed instantaneously by the sound of a gunshot—hardly a caster or one of Vyx’s handcannons like you’re used to, but something fit for a first-person-shooter railgun—from across the gap. You see Aelriss fall backward, and whip around to see her landing in a sitting position with Eunoia nowhere to be seen; there’s a shower of iridescent feathers raining down around her, and she watches with a highly distressed look as they melt into rainbow light and wrap themselves back into a cord around her finger. Florica and Freya glance at each other, before moving in separate directions.

I'd rather use the memory once we've located all enemis. Then we could activate throne and sprint towards the shooter and order the opponents to kneel or drop their weapons if we get surrounded.
>>

> Activate the Memory of the Throne and use yourself as a distraction or mobile cover.
Must protect best girl Aelriss. For real she's likely badly hurt and I don't wanna see her die to another shot. I say run to her and give her cover. Although the circulation of the video of the fight between us and Liza might make the baddies familiar with our memory's skills.

We can still use rubi to look around

Im surprised they shot eunoia first, though. The respawn time cant be THAT long, not in a long term sniper fight

You extend a hand to Aelriss as you start moving, and she grabs it long enough to get to her feet and out of the way. You’re quick to move and hit the ground rolling, landing beside Nel with a rock spire between you and the crevasse. The second shot comes too late, and misses, hitting the ground behind your heels as you make cover.

“That bird does respawn, correct?” Florica asks. She’s a short distance back the way you came, braced against the wall of the cave previous.

“Not nearly quickly enough!” Aelriss says.

“Surprised they didn’t shoot one of us first.” Freya replies. “Unless they’re trying to keep us pinned down here to draw out the fight.”

“Ashe, what are you doing?” Nel asks.

“I’m trying to see where they are.” You lean out to peek from the side of the rock spire. Would they really stage an attack at this distance? It makes sense, of course, as your options for fighting back are limited. But Freya’s made a point: they might well be trying to pin you down here. You can see a glint, peeking out from between stalagmites. Beside, there’s a touch of color that doesn’t match the surroundings. Looks like there’s at least two…

> [[ HP: 10 / 35 ]]
> [[ Affected By: Stunned ]]

There’s an awful clang that rattles you. You don’t hear the shot, but feel something ricochet off the top of your helmet. Rock dislodges from the cavern face closest to you. Nel grabs onto you and pulls you back behind the rocks as you go momentarily limp.

“Shit.” Aelriss says. “They’re just waiting for someone to stick their head out. What kind of gun even is that?”

“Doesn’t sound like anything I’ve heard.” Nel says, scrolling hurriedly through his inventory. “Maybe a new one?”

“I need a distraction.” Florica says. “And a bearing.”

“Well, then.” Freya looks at the corner, as if she’s deciding whether or not to peek out of cover herself; seeing you nearly lose your head has informed her better judgment. “Does anyone have any bright ideas? I’m not quite sure I can reach that far.”

>>
>>3441389

I think Marble would be a better choice if we want to be a distraction or depending on the terrain here we could use Rust to fly up to the ceiling unseen and strike from an unexpected angle.
>>
>>3441389
>Heal up and activate Memory of the Throne, using your cloak as cover.
Just before we pop out, tie our cursed stuff, maybe the boots, and stick them out the rock like we had bad positioning.

Jump out as soon as the shot hits it
>>
>>3441437
Marble could easily result in stunlock, and we wouldnt have a good way to prevent headshots. Marbles healing cant keep up with 20-25 damage a shot.

Fire and Rust are NOT stealthy.

Ruby would actually be the best bet, since we can lift a bigass boulder to use as cover, but we kinda threw that out.
>>
>>3441449
>and we wouldnt have a good way to prevent headshots
Use the sword and shield to cover us. I like your idea to make them waste their first shot btw
>Fire and Rust are NOT stealthy.
The flying part of Rust should be if the terrain covers us.
>>
>>3441453
Marbles manual dexterity is really bad. Im not confident about keeping the shield over the head.

Are there any pillars that go from ground to ceiling?
>>
>>3441457
>Are there any pillars that go from ground to ceiling?
I'm hoping Sylv answers that. The ceiling would have to go pretty high though or someone looking at ground level would still be able to notice us.
>>
>>3441437
Marble is trash. We can't use our weapons or shield and have no ranged options.
>>

>If our agressors continue to attack us gank them with a legion of spiders
(>insert fancy writein as necessary to convince Tethis that we don't need her assistance but that it would dramatically reduce the risk involved and earn our goodwill, etc)

Also damn guys, I head to bed and you immediately pick a fight with Freya.
Should have pointed out to her that not only did we place our life in her hands a moment ago, but that we absolutely knew her powers were Observer based when we did so - talking to Tethis didn't reveal their origins.

Should also have made it clearer that her draining our life before we headed in to meet Tethis had a significant impact on the outcome - at the very least, we weren't whipped by spiderfu before entering diplomancy.

All that aside, I personally have little issue with Freya's spoopy powers provided she can keep them under control and it doesn't get her killed by Tethis. She also has a point when she says her powers were born from CGs - perhaps the heavens move in ways more mysterious than what we know.
>>
>>3441656
Nah, it's simple: we point out to everyone in Averron that in light of large numbers of them banding together and hunting us down we have seen fit to ally ourselves with someone who won't do that.

They're welcome to also partake of such an alliance (or even just stay uninvovled entirely), but if they have issue with it we're back to them trying to claiming 50 big ones only we are absolutely going to fight back with 50,000 big spiders.
>>
>>3441661
Thats not a bad plan

Not quite the general direction I wanted to take, but itll work.
>>
>>3441661
The only downside is that the playerbase at large will think we're more of an antagonist, because of their association with Precursors. This isn't something I'm not entirely opposed to, but I still feel like that would limit our recruiting options for our eventual Guild pretty heavily.
>>
>>3441661
Fuck that no becoming the dark knight.
>>
>>3441389
Too bad we don’t have Flame equipped.

So they took out Euonia, than they took a shot at our head, and it looks like there’s at least two? Damn but Asche is weak to ranged.

They’re probably pinning us down while their buddies go set up some explosives to crush us, and wanted to take out Euonia so we wouldn’t have a literal eye-in-the-sky. If they were deploying melee forces then they would’ve hit already and the snipers would lose their usefulness as soon as the fight started.

So we need to MOVE and NOW. But for that we need a distraction pro-tier players would’ve anticipated this and just set up the explosives in the most obvious escape route for us to take

Hmm, actually now that I’m thinking on it.
-Sound I like any we’ve heard before
-Hits Aelriss in Euonia, hits us in head
-Nel was able to get up behind this rock
That might be some sort of turret that targets artifacts.
>>
>>3441740

>>

>>
>>3441389
>Other
-Swap to Memory of Fire
-Chug a potion

"Florica, Nel, got anything that can cause a duststorm?"

Here's the basic plan:
-Nel, we suspect somebody's trying to plant explosives to bury us, that's why these guys are just pinning us down. Can you find those people?
-If we've got an item that can distract the snipers, then line up and activate [Celestial Technique: Divine Spear] at them. Then have Florica watch and act as a 1-2 punch (or if they've moved she can take down their new position). If we don't have an item, let Florica pull the distraction and then we'll toss the spear.
-Freya, Aelriss, advance while we distract them. If Nel finds anything then try to deal with it until we and Florica can catch up.

>>3441885
We’ve got allocated memories, which we can choose to activate (at which point we gain the benefits and/or penalties described in the description), then we’ve got available memories which we select our allocated memory from.

Unless otherwise specified, allocated memories don’t provide any passive benefits or penalties when inactive. We have seen several available lesser arts or other upgrades that would provide us passive benefits for having a given memory in the allocated slot, but we haven’t bought any of those yet.
>>
>>3441751
Florica should be able to handle the snipers if we provide a distraction so no need to activate something that might get ohk.
>>3441778
That message has to be sent to the BH leader first and foremost and it won't solve the immediate issue of the snipers since they probably won't be looking at the forums now.

So activate throne to allow Florica to murder them or go back to Thetiss Claw and find another exit.
>>
>>3442033
Retreating back into Tethiss’ Claw is a good idea.

>>3441751

>>
>>3442134

>>
>>3442199
>Better for everyone involved to avoid that
What about, you know, us and our squad who are being shot at and pursued by them right now? How is it any better for us if we don’t kill them?

Aelriss and Nel might not be the happiest in the world about it, but I bet they’ll prefer it to being dead themselves.

Also we’ll probably get some sick loot.
>>
>>3442225
Incapacitating them without killing would mean less people hating us after the fact
>>
>>3442281
If there were EVER a situation where player killing is acceptable and/or justified this HAS to be one.

We can’t pull our punches because someone might get mad that we killed someone who was trying to kill us. In fact, if we wipe these fuckers off the map it’s likely to deter other people from coming after us and reduce the overall number of deaths.
>>
>>3442297
For instance, if we wipe these people out then no one who is less well equipped and prepared than them is likely to try to come after us.
>>
>>3442320
I have to agree that these people are fair game, they are no different from a nameless gank squad.
>>
>>3441927
The benefits of the lesser arts of memory of flames is top notch. A bonus to all actions is nothing to scuff at.
>>
>>3442603
Yeah, if Aelriss weren’t so handy it’d be a no-brainer.
>>
>>3442603
High investment though and it's only when Fire is active (not equipped)
>>
>>3442609
It’s functionally the Seer’s foresight ability from Quest for Arcadia. If I’m correct we could dodge bullets using it by predicting where they’re going to shoot but a teammate being afraid of fire does hurt it’s usefulness.
>>3442619
There’s been talks about getting two allocation slot if we can. It would be ridiculous if we could use it with other memories.
>>
>>3442619
I haven’t been disappointed in investing the whole cost of Strife into a single memory thus far. In fact, in an ideal world, we would take that lesser art before facing the memory, because then I’m pretty sure we’d keep that lesser art while still unlocking new ones.

Unfortunately I think that also means we missed out on the passive buffs that one trait from Exile was offering. On the other hand, the wording of both of these examples specifically calls out their associated memory, and Exile’s name changed to Throne. Somehow I doubt Sylv would let investiture go to waste though.
>>
>>3442624
Anon is saying that the way that lesser art is phrased, the prophetic talent only comes into play when we have Memory of Fire active (we are transformed). It doesn’t take effect when it’s just allocated. This may or may not be a typo.
>>
>>3442693
>Somehow I doubt Sylv would let investiture go to waste though
I'd expect it to take a new form personally
>>
>>3442700
Yeah, it would be nice if it would stay the same or otherwise ‘add’ though. Gives us an incentive to toe the line and risk going insane by investing in lesser arts before upgrading the memory as a whole, whereas if they just transition and transform with the new memory the investment just stays the same.

“I got a flash bomb.” Nel says, with a worried shrug.

“How bright are those?” Florica asks.

“Very.” Freya responds. “It could buy us a moment, but it’s unlikely to reach far enough to create cover of blindness.”

“You’d have to cook it.” You suggest.

“…What?” Nel squints, giving you a concerned look.

“He means ‘wait until the fuse is about to pop before throwing it’.” Freya corrects. “I surmise, at least. What else do we have? If our attackers have a strategy, it hinges on our being pinned down here. We’ve already wasted too much time.”

“There’s a longer route up back through Tethiss’s Claw. We could retreat and make a run for it that way.” Nel says, gaze drifting back to his map. “The caverns are narrower up there, too, so…”

“…We’d have a better chance at just punching through, if they rotated to block us off.” Aelriss says.

“I thought you didn’t want to fight.” You turn to Aelriss.

>>
>>3443012
Whilst I'm normally inclined to agree we need to hit them hard and fast before they can gather reinforcements.

It's almost certain that they'll have spread a little thin trying to sniff us out and are using sniper fire to keep us pinned whilst rallying the rest.

On top of that, they know Asche is a bit of a battle maniac but even then they probably don't expect us to immediately retaliate at full throttle.
>>
>>3443012

They'd only be likely to enter if they splintered because a subfaction decide they want the bounty just to theirselves or if we hid in the claw so long they thought we found a secret route out or died inside
>>
>>3443082
I still think retreating after a barrage is the better tactical option. It would allow Aelriss to get Euonia back, it's almost certainly a blindside, and the initiative would be ours instead of theirs.

But the realization does make me less opposed to charging them head-on. They didn't think they could take on our party full-strength and win, they thought they could take on our party after we were weakened by battling through the most deadly place known around Averron. That's a significant difference.

“Throw the bomb,” You look down at Nel, and watch as he briefly fumbles with the fuse. “I’m going.”

There’s a moment of tension. The others watch as the Explorer counts down, an act that reminds you that you may well be running out of time. He doesn’t lean out, but ducks and steps forward a little bit to create a better angle to throw the flash bomb over the rock spire. As the light blooms, you activate your Celestial Artifact. Your shield vanishes, and light from the mystic eye becomes a cord of gold and a cloak of scarlet as you step out of cover, royal effects fluttering in a mysterious wind. This power becomes you; your divine right will render you untouchable.

It’s hard to see. The light source is trending downward slowly, but it’s bright enough to illuminate the whole of the cavern. As it falls over the crevasse between you and the sniper, it creates a wall of light that’s surely difficult for magnified optics to penetrate.

“Ashe—” Aelriss begins to speak.

“Just go!” You respond. She moves, putting you between her and the sniper as she and Nel rush for the next cavern. A shot rings out, and you hear it ricochet from the stone wall opposite. “Florica?”

“Let’s not waste time—unless…” The Crimson Witch moves toward you, squinting as she looks toward the dimming light over the gap.

⟦ CELESTIAL TECHNIQUE: DIVINE RIGHT ⟧

Light gathers in your palm, thrumming loudly as it warps into a spear of cleansing power. Radiant rays seep from between your knuckles as you clench your fist around the weapon. The flash bomb disappears into the crevasse underneath; when the light has passed, you’re sure your foes are surprised to see a glow of similar brightness waiting for them on the other side.

Another crack, tailed by the sound of that supercharged caster. It’s not enough to stop them, but…

> [[ Affected By: Armor Reduction ]]

The round hits your cloak above the center of your chest, shattering on impact with the Celestial material. Best not test the full extent of your defenses right this second. You level the spear, dust flying out from around your feet as you brace for the throw, then hurl it like a bolt of lightning across the cavern. Your ray of light screams, crossing the cavern with speed that’d make your foes suspect a counter-sniper, except—the explosion that results on the opposite side is large enough to show the magnitude of your strength. You hear yelling.

⟦ LESSER ART: IFRA VA XEA ORDIS ⟧

Crimson pulses echo outward from where Florica’s feet fall, like the steps of some arcane dance accented with the syllables she utters. You can see orbs of flame taking form overhead, drifting lazily like clouds, and feel the heat on your skin as each one pulses, issuing forth a barrage of smaller fireballs. The ensuing blasts against the cliff face opposite, and your foes’ concealed position, echo over the crevasse as a serenade of divine artillery fire. You see someone fall out of the smoke, crashing against the rocks and disappearing into the chasm. If you were them, you’d be fleeing—or repositioning, depending on just how brave you were feeling. But you can’t see the others, if they’re still there.

“No easy way to cross the chasm.” The Explorer responds. He doesn’t look to see if there’s more shots coming, instead hurrying behind you on his way to cover. “There’s a spot down the path where it narrows enough that it wouldn’t take too long to climb over—if we didn't want to cross, we’d basically have to double back from up ahead.”

“I must admit I admire their choice of location. This strike seems rather meticulously planned.” Freya says, rather casual in her step as she looks out over the crevasse. You can’t see where the attacker landed, but there’s blood where they bounced off the rocks. You’re waiting for another shot, but it doesn’t come within the next few seconds. The smoke is clearing, chunks of stone dislodging from the edge of the cliff and the cave ceiling overhead where your divine spear and Florica’s fireball bombardment struck down.

“I think that much was obvious.” Florica says, with a frown. Aelriss is up ahead, hiding behind the rocks in the upward-inclining tunnel. “They’re counting us out—I imagine they have a contingency plan, even if they’ve suffered a casualty. This fight may not be in our favor—and if they catch us climbing across we’ll be in an even worse position.”

> Move ahead and cross the chasm.
> Head directly for Averron. You’ll see how things look at the fork.
> Try and find a way down into the crevasse from your current position while Strife Memoriam remains active.

Just to be sure this is only for crossing the chasm, not for moving to Averron right?

“I see them.” Nel says, peering out over the chasm as you move ahead toward the tunnel. When you look to affirm, all you can see is clearing smoke. “Two of them, far. They’re retreating, or—uh, rotating, like Aelriss said. Looks like it was the sniper that fell down the chasm.”

“Interesting.” Freya says. “I imagined they’d have continued shooting.”

“They don’t have another weapon like that.” Florica says, looking back to give Freya a suspicious look. “They were aiming to pin us down under threat of death, or perhaps take our Artifacts out of the equation quickly. But a regular longcaster likely wouldn’t take Ascheritte out from a single hit to the head.”

“A strong enough bloodletter would, if he was unlucky enough to suffer bleeding through armor—chances are the first tick would finish him before he could do something to counteract it.” Freya says. Aelriss looks to her with an appalled expression; the ashen-skinned girl quirks a brow, affording a slight shrug. “What? Know thy enemy.”

“If we’re about knowing our enemy, do we know anything about what kind of gun that is?” Aelriss asks. “Getting our heads blown off from out-of-sight is kind of a game changer.”

“It has to be from the Hecatelia data.” Florica says. “I thought it would take longer to see results—and the weapons aren’t supposed to be outside the Alliance.”

“So, what? It’s someone from Disposable Heroes?” Aelriss asks. “Or the Writ Keepers?”

“I told Sven to get the word out that my bounty isn’t up for grabs.” You respond.

“And Ayla’s guild is anti-BHing, remember? There were rumors that people were going to take her to war over censoring BH threads on the forums.” Nel says.

“Who’s making the weapons?” You ask. “Liza told me a little bit about the Talents. It could be one of their affiliates, or someone who stole from them.”

“They’re part of the Alliance, aren’t they?” Aelriss asks.

“They’re not.” Florica responds. “It’s complicated.”

“That seems not good.” Aelriss says. Freya gives a small smile—even when her life’s in danger, it seems she gets a little kick out of seeing the Alliance in disarray. The group stays spread out as you make your way up and through the cavern. You take the lead, and notice that everyone’s keeping their heads low and their corners checked when you glance back.

“Mendicant and Liza have been working out negotiations, but they’ve refused to move in a number of places. It’s an awfully troublesome situation.” Florica says.

“Fork is up ahead, guys.” Nel says. “We can stay low behind the rocks on the close side. What do we want to do?”

Going for this just to avoid going back.
>>

Why do you want to avoid going back?

I think we’re safe enough with a Crimson Guardian Officer, asking for an additional escort is just kinda being a pussy.

I'm more concerned with being shot in the back by a very angry sniper

I didn’t realize bloodletter was so severe, would it really take out 10 health in one tick?

If so we might consider implementing it on our Colossal Pale Aethersteel Greatsword.
>>
>>3446661
Bleed weapons are pretty great in dark souls, yeah.

The main downside is that they don't really work on things with no blood or are just weird in terms of anatomy. Hard to juggle with other PvE weapons, basically.

Yeah, I kind of don't want to double back
>>
>>3446696
Nah, we can’t put elemental buffs on it because it’s pale but bloodletter and armorpiercer and that magic-disrupting one (probably the best choice) are a separate matter.

But we should wait until we upgrade best girl’s forge and person before doing so anyway.
>>
> Inform Liza that you’ll be needing an assist, or a scout for upcoming ambush attacks.

Is there a list of status effects found in-game? I hope shit like Curse/Frenzy/Terror isn't available to players
>>
>>3446857
There might be on the forums, otherwise someone would just have to run through the archives and take notes on the various effects we’ve experienced and/or seen on weapons or armor.

One intriguing one, that Vyx has based her build around, is [Madcap] which reduces fatigue and movement penalties on nonstandard terrain, and increases a few offensive attributes as well. That’s why she’s constantly wallrunning and leaping between precarious perches and cartwheeling and etc., and apparently she’s stacked it enough that she has higher DPS when she’s NOT touching the ground now.

Her comment does make me realize that dual paleflame handcasters with some sort of bloodletting/corruption/piercing effect would be pretty killer though.

If only we weren’t always so chronically low on materials. We’ve got a decent chunk of change, if we head to averron and get the price off our head we ought to hit up the player markets and buy some stuff to upgrade our gear.

You squint. It’s almost like she’s starting to care about you. But she’d say it’s a matter of the power you have, the influence you’ve come to wield, and its potential to corrupt you. You inform your team of the situation, then find a safe place to rest. Aelriss lights a fluorescent torch, nesting it between rocks in the nook of a cave to afford you a little bit of light. It’s not terribly necessary, since the holographic UI menu is illuminated enough to operate in total darkness, but the group is meticulous in ensuring that there’s no light leaking from the mouth of your hiding place.

To the guys proposing switching to flame - why?
Doesn't Throne offer better hp regen (useful since we're still low) and better defense in combat?

I get wanting to switch up to keep our enemies on their toes, but I'd prefer being more confident about being able to take a hit.
>>
>>3449221
Throne doesn’t have regen.
>>
>>3449221
If you want regen and defense you should go for Marble.
>>
>>3449221
Throne doesn't offer any regen buffs, we just retain our normal combat regeneration while in it.

As for generalized defense...I'm actually interested to find out if any traditional weapons even cause us damage while we're actively in Flame.

>>3448766
Supporting the secondary actions of this, and also switching to flame.

>>3449241
I'd kill to have Marble's lesser art that let's us regen HP from PP. We really need to prioritize grabbing that. At that point I'd be much more comfortable spending our exp on PP rather than health increases as well.
>>
>>3449264
There’s a lot of things I want. I want more memory slots. I want the ability to use more memories at the same time. I want more variety in shields for Throne. I want to pick up the lesser arts.
>>
>>3449241
>>3449264
For some reason I could have sworn that Throne offered heightened regen, but looking back at the previous thread I can't see any indication of that.

Seems like our regular combat regen was just at work.

Anyway, the last caveat of switching to fire is Aelriss' troubles but I'm pretty interested to see it in action
>>
>>3449273
I anticipate that we'll be rocketing away from where ever Aelriss is if we have to employ Flame. We should definitely give her some forewarning though.

So, ideas for how to phrase our request to upgrade the heretic soulforge?

I’m thinking something like “I find myself fond of the equipment which has saved my life time and again...but as my enemies grow stronger it does not. Would you address the forge and empower the forge master to allow him to remediate this issue?”
>>
>>3455311
I think we just need to empower the forgemaster. Anything after should involve bringing back particular pieces of equipment.

If the egg really is the pheonix for example, it could fuel the forge with life giving flames.
>>
>>3455311
Besides, the most practical "upgrade" for the forge at the moment is getting a consistent stream of materials to use and experiment with.

Not just aethersteel, but silverwing farms or worm bait/traps
>>
>>3455453
Wasn't the Forgemaster's whole schtick him being able to create technology that was once lost?
>>
>>3455561
True. But he was kinda vague about it and I suspect it involves more things like the automaton workers and pegasi.

In terms of weapons weve got the fluxsaber and some sort of bigger gun, but he made the experimental fluxsaber without any input from us so maybe he just needs empowerment and/or general resources.
>>
>>3455579
Well, he obviously knew what he was doing. He's more of a person than a machine. That being said, I'm not certain where we obtained the bigger gun from, but he commented that he was trying to make fluxsabres again, but lacked the control and resources.

The fluxsabre was also trash. That's what 'dross' means. I think we could definitely get him to the point where he could freely create Fluxsabres again, but after that, who knows?
>>
>>3455584
We dont actually have the bigger gun yet, but he called the guns that we see being used now primitive.
>>
>>3455453
He’s repeatedly stated the forge needs upgrading as well as himself in order to be able to upgrade old equipment instead of just crafting new stuff.
>>
>>3455453
I like the idea of burning the Phoenix Egg as fuel for upgrading the Forge...but not as much as I like consuming the lifeforce of the Phoenix for ourselves.

The forge and forgemaster both need to be powered up in my opinion though. I think we should allot at least 5 gems to it out of the Alliance's dispensation for upgrades (I think the other gems should go towards upgrading the Overworld Sim, so we can make material farms in it)
>>
>>3455453
Damn I really like that idea for the egg. Seems less risky than eating it.
>>
>>3457048
What exactly seems ‘risky’ about consuming it for ourselves? If we’re burning CGs and an extremely valuable loot item then I highly doubt it’ll turn out poorly for us.
>>
>>3457406
I mean the celestials mentioned suffering when we asked them about it
>>
>>3457447
They said “suffer long, or rise to fight again” implying we would either get a bonus to damage resistance/increased health OR we’d get the ability to die and rise again (very thematically appropriate and an EXCELLENT way to catch opponents off guard). Either way it sounds straight up awesome.
>>
>>3457447
What’s more intriguing is that, seemingly, if we only use the egg in conjunction with the altar we get these two options: >>3457493

But if we use the egg and a CG we “avail ourselves the power of life”. This is NOT healing, which we’ve looked into and got a distinct offer on. We know that life is a #1 Tier element, so this is quite intriguing.

I’d be content in burning the egg in any of these fashions (or to buff the forge), but my favorite is consuming its life force to gain the ability to rise and fight again.
>>
>>3457621
Perhaps we could even use the egg to empower the forgemaster specifically. It would be very interesting if he was able to bestow some sort of simulacrum of life to his creations or to the pale flame afterwards.

That’s now my favorite theoretical application, at least until we get the celestial’s specific response to such a request.
>>
Another thing to note is that although we’ve looked at the Celestial upgrades available for the Observatory regularly we’ve never talked to the head custodian to see what NPCs can be hired or items/facilities purchased, improved, or constructed using plain old credits and resources. The only time we’ve talked to that guy was to dismiss him when we very first manifested the observatory into its current state.
>>
>>3457663
WE need to do that yeah.

>>3456553
>>3457406
Rather take the egg to the seer before we burn it. Feels like it’s a quest item that leads to a huge pay off later on.
>>
>>3457879
I doubt it. I feel like any questline it might’ve been tied to probably ended when we dematerialized that altar. At this point the spoils have gone to the victor.
>>
>>3457879
Have we asked the seer about the forgemaster? Might not be a bad idea to try to get a better read on him.
>>
>>3458087
Day my think so
