General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

“Protect yourself with Mist, Sorbet!” You announce. There’s a soft, appreciative chuckle about her name from the small handful of people standing around and watching the amatuer tournament.

“Roggeveen! Keep on your Block” Your opponent yells. His big belly jiggles in excitement, and he has the sort of loud booming voice that feels like it can only come from someone with a beard as bushy as his.

Why Block, though? You’re no expert, but you remember that move. It prevent pokemon from fleeing or being switched out. But in a 1v1, that doesn’t seem to make any sense.

The funny looking Probopass named Roggeveen magically summons a small storm of tiny red Xs that sprinkle all over Sorbet. She’s gracefully emitting a soft, evenly distributed mist right up until those hit her, and then she puffs out the white stuff like a heavy bag of flour dropped on the floor.

Despite taking no damage, the unnerving aspect of having no escape has rattled her enough for the judges to take off some of her points. She shivers, unsure of herself.

Your eyes meet your opponent. “First contest tournament?” He asks, not looking for an answer in particular. It just seems like an observation from him.
>Ask if he has any tips
>Don’t waste time responding, give Sorbet her next order. Every second counts

“Yeah! How about you?” You beam back.

“Huh. You’re a friendly little guy. I like that!” He brightens up a little. There’s a small pause in the battle. It doesn’t last for more than a few seconds, but it’s enough time for Sorbet to lose a lot of the pressure put on her from Block and the audience, and to see Probopass as a fellow pokemon just like her.

But it can’t last forever. “Hope you don’t take this personally. Roggeveen, let’s take advantage of that mist and make a pretty Power Gem!”

Probopass begins focusing it’s energy for it’s Power Gem attack. It looks pretty ominous, being slightly obscured

“We’re going to try something creative, Sorbet. Ice Shard the Power Gem, then quickly follow up with an Aurora Beam into it!”

Sorbet doesn’t understand, but she doesn't seem to care. She quickly fires an Ice Shard that embeds right into the Power Gem, barely slowing it down. As the Gem comes flying closer, rushes to get her Aurora Beam off in time. The Power Gem is right next to her when she fires it, bringing it to a rough stop as it almost touches her nose. Her protective icy coat expands like mad all around her, creating frozen ice crystal formations around her feet and an explosion of puffy snow from the wind of that sudden stop.

For half a second it looks like she might be able to push the Power Gem back, but it’s too unstable. As the Aurora Beam pours into the shiny prism that is the embedded Ice Shard, the rainbow light focuses, then blows the entire thing apart! The Power Gem and Ice Shard turn into a rocky, icy grenade, hitting Sorbet with mild but startling damage. The Aurora Beam ended up splitting in all directions from that, creating a sort of laser disco ball effect in the mist.

The judges are impressed by the display. But they also note it quite literally exploded in Sorbet’s face. Both pokemon lose a moderate amount of points, but your opponent loses almost half as much more.

Sorbet is tired from using two moves quickly, and startled from the explosion. Her fur is puffy and she’s adapting a slightly feral look.

“Let’s do something with this Mist. Use Sandstorm!”

Oh! That will look cool if the sandstorm integrates all the floating rock and ice still showering down.

“Confuse Ray!” You shout at her as the Probopass starts winding up it’s Sandstorm. As soon as Sorbet launches the attack, you have a thought. “Close your eyes! Hurry!”

Sorbet does as she’s told, as well as pointing her face down and to the side just in case. It’s a good thing, too. The Confuse Ray hits the many tiny falling shardlets as the begin to whip around, leaping around and creating a scattered light show of various smaller and larger Confuse Rays that converge on their target with a spectacular light show. This also causes Roggeveen to lose the Sandstorm before it could be made self-sustaining. Loose sand and the remainder of the tiny bits of rock and ice scatter and fall around as the Probopass stumbles, -for lack of a better term- about.

It loses another decent amount of points. It now has about a third as many points as Sorbet, and could be knocked out of the match with a very good attack, or two or three lesser attacks.

Sorbet looks pooped though. She’s been pushing herself to pull off more moves than her opponent.

“Sorbet! Baby-Doll Eyes!”

“Stone Edge!”

Sorbet leaps into a ready pose, keeping her eyes closed . Instead of a vicious or powerful attack, when she opens them, the audience is struck with the biggest, widest, cutest eyes ever.

You hear some gasps, a lot of “awws” and even a very feminine squeal. You glance over to where that came from and see Abigail quickly cover her mouth and then scowl, as if you did something wrong by looking in her direction.

Roggeveen is struck for a moment. It tries to charge forward and then summon up a spike of rock under Sorbet, but instead it summons a tiny pillar under itself, hurting itself a small amount. It loses a lot of points, hanging on by a thread. ALthough you remind yourself that the points don’t reflect it’s health, so you shouldn’t assume it can be knocked out easily.

Sorbet looks a little less tired, but she’s hardly in prime, rested condition.

“Change of plans! We’ll need to go for the knock out instead. Zap Cannon!”

“Sorbet, quick, try Captivate!”

A mass of electrical energy gathers around the Probopass. You can almost feel the sheer power from here. You can’t depend on confusion any more, he’s shaken it off.

“Hurry!” You encourage.

Sorbet leverages her big, cute, adorable eyes and blinks at her opponent who is currently charging and aiming a super powerful death beam at her.

She blinks, firing off hearts at her opponent, looking captivatingly and beautifully sad and betrayed for the millisecond before the blinding wave of electric energy pours over her. Roggeveen looks regretful and devastated for having hit so well.
When the beam is gone, you see a frail, hurt, pathetic looking Sorbet emerge from a cocoon of ice and snow that was summoned from her coat to protect her. A cautious and frail paw tests the ground in front of her before the rest follows out of her crumbling, cold shell.

The judges and audience side with this adorable but determined display. Just from surviving that attacking and looking so cute doing it, you end up winning the battle. The points from your opponent's side slide down to nothing. You note that your own points still went down quite a bit too. That could have gone a lot differently if she weren’t so suited for taking Special Attacks.

“Winner, Vulpix!”

You rush over to Sorbet. Besides being worn right out and heavily damaged, she’s also pretty shaken up and frazzled. A spark from her fur catches you when you give her a hug.

“Great job, Sorbet!”

She shakes. You guess that was pretty intense for her. She also seems to be glad to use you to hide from the squealing and adoring group of people coming in from around her.

Belladonna folds her arms, looking unimpressed at the attention Sorbet is getting

You give Sorbet a hug, concentrating and focusing your healing energy into her as you do so. You haven’t expended a significant amount of aura energy in a while and thanks to that it doesn’t feel straining at all. You’re putting subtlety above thoroughness though, so you don’t heal everything. It’s more than enough for Sorbet to look grateful though. Her huge eyes are now looking up at you in such a way that you worry about your heart stopping.

A distracting, high pitched noise coming from behind you snaps you out of it. You glance back and see Abigail contorting her face. “What are you looking a...ahhhh omigosh she’s too cute!” She breaks, smothering poor Sorbet in a hug. Sorbet is a little startled and puffs out some more ice on her coat, but that doesn’t dissuade Abigail’s cheek from smushing against her defiantly. Sorbet, after realizing there isn’t a threat, just accepts Abigail after a moment.

“Abigail, your hair is freezing.”

“I don’t care.” She holds on even tighter.

But she does care about the other people coming closer to Sorbet. Abigail slowly loosens her grip and Sorbet hides behind you.

“It’s alright, Sorbet. They just want to see you. No need to be shy.” You say the words, and you intend to believe them. It’s hard to be enthusiastic about it. There are more people than you expected. She made an impact. A little kid comes up and leans in uncomfortably close, and Sorbet becomes more nervous again. But with you and Abigail there, she remains calm enough.

Belladonna is about to get really fuming, but a lick from Dice distracts her and throws her right off.

Sorbet closes her eyes when the child reaches forward and pets her. The child’s mom scolds her for touching Sorbet without asking. Sorbet looks relieved that her trust in letting the kid touch her didn’t bite her. She offers a polite bow, and then steps forward to allow for another pet. It still feels uneasy and weird to her and you can clearly tell that, but she behaves well and tries her best to offer the crowd some acknowledgement instead of hiding away. She’s really forcing herself and trusting you.

“So did Hana go to find Laki and Keira or what?” Abigail asks, petting Sorbet. She switches hands after that one gets too cold.

You glance around. You won’t have much time until your next match, but it’s still enough to do something quickly.

You decide to go talk to your opponent with the little time you have between matches. He was pretty good, and you always like learning when you can.

“Oh hey! That was a good match, little guy.” The large Loanan says, giving you a hefty smack on the back with that common island familiarity that you’re still getting used to. “I don’t feel too bad losing to a Cuter.”

Did you hear that correctly? No. You’re just distracted. You should ask. Hurry up and ask before too much time goes by. “I’m sorry, a what?”

His large, expressive, meaty face contorts, like you’re being silly. “Cuter. You know, there’s contest battlers that use cuteness like you with that Grass pokemon and your Vulpix. Some people say it’s a feminine way to do compete, but I respect you doing what works best for you. And man, it works. That ice was pretty cool, man.” He gives a funny expression and points with his fingers. “Eh? Eh?”

“Oh! I get it!”

“Took awhile. That’s alright, little buddy. We don’t have to be fast, that’s for our pokemon.”
You get another meaty slap on the back. “Hey, let me ask you something. That little redhead over there, is she with you?”

You glance over at Abigail. She’s laughing like a little kid as Sorbet licks her face. You’re positive she’d immediately stop that if she noticed you looking at her.

“Is Abigail with...oh! No. I mean yes, but we’re just friends.” You explain. “Come on, I’ll introduce you.”

“Alright little dude!” He comes with you. His girth shakes the ground behind you, but he’s surprisingly fast and keeps up with no problem.

Abigail shoots up, alarmed at the sudden approach. She puts down Sorbet, who puffed slightly. Abigail has noticeable goosebumps. “Uh, hey.”

“Hey.” His voice is an octave higher. He coughs. “Your buddy here said he’d introduce us.”

She pauses for a moment, looking him up at down. Then she grabs onto your arm. “My boyfriend’s such a friendly guy.”

“I thought you said you guys were just frien-...ah.” His smile slowly fades.

You quickly take Abigail aside.

“What are you doing, Goldentop?” She huffs, upset and flustered.

“I don’t know. He asked me to introduce you. He seemed friendly.” You feel a bit disappointed in how quickly she decided not to give the guy chance to even give his name.

She folds her arms. “From your twelve second conversation with him? And don’t look at me like that. Like I judged too quickly. I’m not the bad guy here. Why do you think he came to hit on me?” She smooths her hands over her small body. “He liked what he saw and started slobbering like a creepy step-dad.”

“Well...maybe he liked the way you were playing with Sorbet. You looked nice and gentle.”

She looks passed you to the large guy again. He’s gently petting Sorbet, and she’s quickly becoming less stiff. You were just entertaining possibilities, but Abigail seems pretty struck, and even a little ashamed. “Alright. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt. For now.”

She heads back over. “Hey, I’m Abigail. Herb here isn’t my boyfriend. He’s just my friend whose a boy.”

“Hey, well, I’m Akau.” He’s a little confused, but goes with it. He bows, then offers a hand for a handshake. “Not sure if I’m doing this right. My hands really cold, too.”

She laughs. “Same. Sorbet can tone it down if she wants, but she get too into being pet.”

Sorbet looks embarrassed at all the extra attention, causing another small laugh to erupt from Abigail. “So, you lost your match huh? That sucks. Herb was probably cheating.”

"Wh- No I wasn't! I-" You stop protesting when you see the smirk on her face.

The two of them walk off to the stands, with Abigail laughing at your expense and Akau trying not to be rude to you. You watch for a moment. You only spare that little moment though. Your next match will start any minute and you won’t have much time to get ready. Your next opponent is a woman in her late twenties or early thirties, wearing some expensive looking clothes. She’s brushing a strange, goofy looking pokemon with what looks like a paintbrush for a tail.

You also look over your pokemon. Not everyone has had a chance to battle yet, but then again not everyone seemed like they preferred this over a regular battle. Dice and Gobble are lazily playing with each other. Sorbet is wagging her tail and watching Abigail. Belladonna is staring directly at you, looking like she wants to make a demand but not wanting to be greedy. Mace is still, but keeping his senses attuned to a nearby match with curiosity. You don’t see Pepper, but he dips in and out of view a lot. Gardevoir is looking oddly giddy, but restrained by a strange sense of embarrassment.

“Gardevoir, do you want to talk about...whatever’s going on?”

She looks over, breaking out of her distracted thoughts. “It’s...embarrassing.”

“Well, okay. If you change your mind, let-”

“I NEED A DISTRACTION!” Her voice echoes in your head instead of your ears. You’re yanked close to her face. The look in her eyes is familiar yet alarming. She lowers you to the ground, slowly. “My apologies. I do not know what came over me.”

Mace is upright and by your side, but calms down when she does.

You have no idea what to make of that until you spot Hana in the small gathering of chairs for people who want to sit and watch the amatuer tournament battles. You hadn’t noticed her before because she’s sticking to the back. She’s sweating and nervous looking.

“So, would you want to try a battle? Would you be alright in one?”

She cocks her head. “I would obey. What I desire and what others desire is...often confusing.” Her eyes go over your body in a way that makes you subconsciously cover yourself a little.

“Well, alright. I choose you, Gardevoir.”

She bites her lip and puts a hand on your chest. “Darn right.”

“F-for the b-battle.” You almost choke.

“Ah. I see.” She looks out onto the field. “An odd choice. I will obey and protect the brightness.”

She walks onto the battlefield gracefully. Her long legs, normally stiff, have a looseness to them as she takes her place. Your opponent also has their painting pokemon step forward.

“You can do it, Smeargle!” The trainer opposite you shouts. Her voice is raspy but youthful.

You quickly scan over the pokedex for moves that Gardevoir might know. You hope this is reliable.

“Begin!” A judge announces suddenly. Gah! That catches you by surprise each time. There’s never any countdown or warning in this tournament.

Smeargle glances across the field at Gardevoir, seemingly content to wait for her move.

“Gardevoir! Double Team-”

“MIRROR MOVE!” Your opponent cries as you begin you command.

“And announce your attack for everyone to hear!”

“L-let everyone hear my voice?” She blushes. Her head shakes off that odd, Hana-like expression, and focuses. “Double Team!” She declares with majesty.

The judges are already gripped. A pair of hands slams down on the judges table as one of them completely puts his attention to Gardevoir.

The Smeargle using Double Team a second later. The pokemon and trainer look disappointed at the speed and lack of impact. They must have been trying to steal Gardevoir’s thunder. Your side loses a few points, but your opponent loses many more.

“My brilliance cannot be stolen.” She tells them quietly. Smeargle looks a little intimidated by that. The fact that she has fake doubles all saying it really adds impact.

“Misty Terrain!” You command.

“A glorious fae ground, annexed through majesty and beauty! Misty Terrain!” Her voices from all the illusionary copies boom. She’s completely captivating as the mist rolls out from her in all directions.

Your command now feels like it was an announcement for what she was going to do, after that.

Your opponent paints into the air. Yet the move it uses has nothing to do with paint. “That’s right, Shift Gear!” The trainer commands. And the clever little Smeargle finishes painting gears onto the air that come to life temporarily, filling it with power and shining in the terrain. They fade away shortly after.

Something about the style and elegance of painting impresses the judges. But not as much as they would be if the sparkling pink Misty Terrain hadn’t washed over it, lightly obscuring everything in a faint, pink, sparkling fog.

“You’re obscuring our art!” The trainer accuses angrily. Her Smeargle’s attitude seems to reflect that.

And then Gardevoir’s face too, reflects their anger.

"The ritual is complete! Moonblast!" You get into it and add some flair of your own.

“Shine of the moon, display my fury and power! Cleansing light, wash away impurities! Moonblast!”

“Quick! King’s Shield!” Your opponent shouts. The Smeargle paints into the mist, but you can still somewhat see the metal shield it’s creating in the air. In a second, it becomes solid and real, and the Moonblast impacts and scatters in a brilliant lightshow.

Both you and your opponent lose a moderate amount of points, with your opponent losing a little less. You do have to admit it was an impressive save. And it also prevented what could have been a pretty powerful attack. But the thematic emphasis of your attack helped, even if it didn’t land.

The King’s Shield then shatters into nothingness with a gesture from Smeargle. It was probably going to go away anyway, but it’s a stylish way to make it look more like it was in Smeargle’s control. That gives the judges reason to deduct a few more points from your ticker.

But you’re still winning. And Gardevoir’s power and ability to talk are both major advantages in this contest battle.

“Time to strike back, Smeargle.”

“Sketch that move we learned last week.” She commands. Her Smeargle gets to work, painting. You watch closely, trying to figure out what it is so you can give Gardevoir a smart command. She’s trusting you here.

Oh wow! It’s painted a bone club that looks a lot like the same style as Cubones. Except it’s ghostly.

“Now, use that Shadow Bone!” She commands. Smeargle obeys, picking it out of the air as it becomes real, and charging Gardevoir.

The judges look impressed at Smeargle knowing this move. It seems very unexpected.

You need to act. Now. “Teleport!”

Gardevoir vanishes just in time. The club strikes air where she used to be. Instead of being discouraged, Smeargle strikes at one of her clones, that also teleports away. This repeats two more times, before the teleporting Gardevoirs become too much to chase. She looks especially in control as the Misty Terrain gives her copies and teleportation an extra thematic and eerie feeling. But there’s something subtle you, and you think the other trainer notice. Only the real Gardevoir creates small waves in the Misty Terrain. Smeargle might be able to find the real version of her if he pays close attention. And Smeargle, despite chasing her, is only inches away from catching her or her clones and gradually gaining ground

The judges reserve any taking of points for the moment and wait to see how this plays out.

Gardevoir's become quiet. Hopefully she's just concentrating on staying out of whacking range.

“Gear Grind! Sweep wide and take her from the sides!”

The Smeargle begins painting. It’s a smooth motion that has the Shadow Bone fade seconds after he’s already begin, giving the illusion that it’s somehow been infused into the paint itself. Smeargle stylishly summons two incredibly shiny gears that reflect the bright sunlight and sparkle with the Misty Terrain.

“No.” She says firmly.

“Finish them with Psychic!”

Gardevoir’s eyes glow as the spinning metal gears sweep through one of her illusionary copies and then homes in on the real her. “For stealing the brilliance of the sun, and defying our light, I sentence you-”

Her words are cut short when one of the gears dig into her sides. The glow in her eyes flickers, but doesn’t go out. The other strikes her from the other side, further disrupting her focus and deeply damaging her. She looks like she might buckle under the sudden and unexpected pain.

But that impression doesn’t last long. The gears come to a sudden stop, then bend. The glow in her eyes becomes a glowing aura around her body. Smeargle violently shoots away as if hit by an invisible bus. A cloud of displaced Misty Terrain follows it for a few feet, then it’s stopped in the air and slammed into the ground.

You didn’t even notice the points go down. Her display of raw, angry power that’s come out now sends a chill through the air. Smeargle crawls, then scampers away, and you distantly hear the judges declare victory for Gardevoir.

She stands there, motionless, while the soft wind pushes some of the mist that surrounds her away. There’s a lot of cheering and noise, and everyone sees things as totally fine and just the end of the battle, but you have other concerns. Her demeanor has changed. And you’re pretty sure you’re the only one that’s noticed.

“Good job, Gardevoir.” You slowly approach from behind.

There’s no response.

Well, holding her hands and coaching her through centering herself seems more realistic. (Assure her of her name, tell her to focus on the physical sensations of living in her body.) She has some real issues that aren’t going away, we need to learn how to best help her deal with them, not just ignore them.

I’m expecting that part of that may involve not using that move anymore.
