/qst/ - Quests

Link to the last thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/3446093

The year is 2030, and competitive gaming is a worldwide phenomenon.

The world has come far from the days where professional gaming is stigmatized, stadiums erected in the name of physical sports soon being repurposed into stadiums for competitive games. From high-octane first-person shooters to intense rhythm games – everything is accepted in this world where games reign supreme.

With how much trouble those games have caused you over the past few days however, you’re starting to get a little miffed at that overarching concept.

Your name is Wolfgang O’Neal. You are an arcade owner who used to be an extremely prolific pro-gamer five years ago, and due to being caught cheating during the finals of a tournament, you ducked out of the fold and disappeared off the face of the earth. Unfortunately, your past has come back to bite you in the form of a streamer named 0phelia, who is looking to recruit you to her team. After beating her by the skin of your teeth, she stormed out of the arcade, and later you found out that she had streamed the match. To say it blew up was an understatement, and that’s how you found yourself facing an old face the next day. With your earlier actions coming to light, the player named Rock has a vendetta due to believing you cheated during the entire tournament (you didn’t) and blames you for the dissolving of his team.

Yeah, it’s certainly been a hell of a couple of days.

You’d just managed to get Rock to leave for the time being – he’s going to get someone to analyze the footage from that match five years ago to decide if you cheated during that particular match. Once he left the tension in the arcade slowly fades, customers turning their attention away from the front desk and back to their games. After a few moments, you ordered Chinese food for you and your friend Cinder, and then you had a very nice lunch littered with comfy conversation and slight jabs at the current situation. Over the course of the day, people flooded into the arcade – most knew who you were now, and none were impolite. Thankfully you didn’t have to deal with anything problematic in the back half of the day - you didn’t see any more reporters, you didn’t see Rock, and you didn’t see 0phelia. When the sky turned from a stunning blue to the gentle glow of sunset, you found yourself feeling content in the fact that nothing had gone wrong.

With all of that recap and exposition done with, we’re finally all caught up. What do you do?

>Go and find Cinder, the arcade is starting to quiet and you’re getting bored.
>Walk around the arcade and see if anything needs fixing or if anyone needs help, it is your job after all.
>Fiercely ignore the ringing of your phone.
>Other.

You roll your shoulders as you stand up from the desk, saying a quick goodbye to a group of girls walking out the door and ignoring the buzzing and ringing of your phone. You vaguely recognize them – they often come in and dominate on the old Groove Groove Circuit game you have pushed away in a corner. It’s nice to know that some people appreciate the classics!

As you open the partition and move out from behind your desk, you give a glance across the room. Most of the people who had came in during the afternoon have departed, leaving the formerly packed space devoid of much life. Sure, there were a few people here and there – you could actually spot Cinder playing Warscape – but compared to earlier, it was like a dead zone. You have no doubt that part of the current popularity was due to the reports about you on the news and the doxing of your address, but all in all it hadn’t been too bad? You had been expecting aggressiveness and invasive questions, and putting Rock aside, that hadn’t happened as of yet.

Regardless, you make your way through the arcade methodically, checking out the machines and giving little greetings to those who weren’t playing on the VR machines. Things were pretty alright for the most part – you mark down some machines that you’ll need to give a checkup on in your pocket notebook, along with picking up the rare wayward piece of trash that someone forgot to throw away. Things always seemed to be calmer in the evenings…

The calmness ends when you hear a shout from deeper in the arcade, followed by the sound of something hard crashing against metal.

Oh boy, you just had to speak up, didn’t you?

>Go investigate the crash, you think you know what caused it.
>Ignore it, like a coward.

You let out a long sigh and turn on your heel, running a hand through your hair as you make your way towards the strategy section of the arcade. You thought you had recognized him coming in while you and Cinder were eating lunch, and this certainly confirmed it – another crash causes you to pick up your pace, because the helmet would most likely be broken if you were too slow.

When you round the corner, you see the offender – a blonde haired girl leaning against the Order & Overwhelm machine with a smirk on her face, and a boy with a shock of brown hair glaring at her whilst hunched over, helmet firmly between his hands as he bangs it against the chair once more. You could piece together from the various times that this incident occurred that she loved antagonizing him in this game, and it had certainly worked like a charm.

“You CHEATED!” He hollers, spittle flying from his mouth as he stomps his foot against the ground. The girl snickers in response, her eyes containing just a smidgen of cruelty.

“How am I supposed to cheat on an arcade machine, Alex? Are you that stupid?” It would be easy to mistake her attitude as bullying, however you have seen them together quite a bit over the last three years – when they play games cooperatively they get along great, she just took a lot of pride in winding him up.

“I don’t know how, but you did! There’s no way you could have gotten that many units that quickly!” He goes to slam the helmet down once again, and you contemplate how to dissolve this without your property getting smashed.

>Move over and take the helmet out of his hands.
>Make your presence known to the two of them with a warning.
>Watch the chaos unfold, you have enough money to replace the helmet.

“Hey, both of you. You break it, you’re replacing it.”

Your voice is sharp and it causes both of them to freeze, Alex stopping the helmet from hitting the chair and the girl’s eyes widening. Their heads turn slowly towards you, expressions showing that they knew they had fucked up. Just as the girl’s mouth opens, Alex begins speaking.

“H-Hey there! H-How’s it going, boss?” He straightens up and sets down the helmet, attempting to lean against the chair as casually as possible. His face is flushed in a deep red, and he can’t seem to meet your eyes – he was always like this when you caught him in the act.

“I know that I’ve talked to you about this before, Alex. I get that you’re upset, but this doesn’t belong to you – I have to spend my own money to replace what you break.” You don’t allow yourself to feel bad as he bites his lip, glancing up at you with tears in the corners of his eyes.

Instead, you look at her next.

“And you, Amelia. I know how much you like to tease him, but it’s causing a ruckus, so I’d prefer it if you two kept your flirting outside of the arcade.”

“H-Hey-“
“We’re no-“

They both go to speak at the same time, and you level a look at them that makes them go quiet.

“I’ve had to warn you about this three times before. If it happens again, I’m going to either make you start paying for it or bar you from entering. I like the both of you, but this is an issue.”

Alex’s cheeks flush even further, and Amelia’s face puffs up in a pout.

“Do you understand me now?”

“Yes…” They both mutter sullenly, to which you can’t help but smile.

“Glad you understand.” You go to turn around, but then you look back. “By the way, Amelia, money’s due for the pass in a few days. Don’t forget about it this time.”

“Yeah, yeah…”

You walk away and hear them both start a muttered conversation, and when you get far enough away you see them both heading to a co-op shooter. They were good kids, and you’d hate to have to kick them out.

What do you do now?

>Go and find Cinder, perhaps you can catch the end of one of her games.
>Go and answer your phone – you can hear it from here, and customers probably can too.

Also on a side note, I think next time we get a call or have contact with 0philea we actually ask why she’s so dead set on having us join her team. And we make sure to point out that she still thinks we’re a cheater, the two of us obviously don’t get along at all and would have an insanely difficult time cooperating as a team, and we’d probably make her team look really bad because we’re cheaters. Not to mention we’re rusty as shit if we ever do play and have next to no knowledge on current mechanics and metas. Just saying not knowing why she’s so intent on this is kinda bothering me now. Cause there’s like 100 reasons it wouldent work out and the only good reason is we where good at the game 5 years ago.
>>
You grit your teeth and move towards the desk, apologizing to a few customers for the noise as you snatch the device off of the desk.

>Call from: Unknown Number

Your eyes narrow at the screen in your hands. 0phelia had been calling throughout the day, enough so that you blocked the number to the arcade. She didn’t have your personal line, however with the app you had hooked up to the arcade’s phone, every call made to it came through to yours. This hadn’t been an issue before yesterday, but apparently this bitch was persistent. She would leave the arcade without a fuss, she said. She must be good at talking out of her ass. Why was she so intent on getting you on her team anyways? You had been too angry to contemplate it earlier, but now with some free time you can’t help but wonder.

You stare at the phone with trepidation. As you said, you had blocked her number – however there was nothing stopping her from getting a new one, or just switching to another payphone. On the other hand, it could be someone important calling and the phone wasn’t recognizing who it was.

What do you do?

You go to answer, but you pause for a moment as you stare at the oppressing sight of the incoming call screen. A small smile begins to spread across your face as you reach over and tap a few buttons on the physical call receiver, setting down your cellphone and picking up the arcade’s. You raise it to your ear.

“Good evening, this is Cascade Arcade. How may I help you?” You rattle off into the phone, hopping up and sitting on your desk with closed eyes. Moments later you get a response, to which you can’t help but chuckle at.

“Hello…” A familiar voice, sounding as casual as could be considering how much she’s been fucking phoning you.

“You know, this is getting old. First you track me down, then you release my address, and now you’re harassing me to this extent. What have I ever done to you?” You try to make your voice as calm as possible. Losing your cool whilst recording the call would be unseemly, as you were planning to post this online as soon as she hung up.

“I need you…to be on my team.” She responds to you, stating this as if it was a fact that not only she knew, but you knew as well.

“I haven’t played this game in five years. I know nothing about what it’s become, I don’t know the meta, I’m apparently a cheater to you, and more importantly, I don’t like you. So, you should just let all of this go. I messed up and I’m just trying to live my life peacefully, so please, leave me alone.”

“You can…be taught.” Her methodical way of speech continues despite the hot truth you just dunked on her, and that upsets you just a little. “My fans made me…aware that you have…a wristband. You can’t…cheat with it. You have skills…that I need. You always have. I want to be the best…and you are going to help me.”

“No, I’m not. Harassment won’t make me join you, no matter how much you keep it up – all it does is make me resent you more.”

“You underestimate…my tenacity. Besides…I think you’ll be joining…soon enough.”

Okay, so she’s fucking crazy. That’s a neat thing to know, you guess.

“And why would that be?” If she has something else coming your way, you’ll bite – if it’s something physical, you have the sweet power of EVIDENCE now.

“You’ll see…if you don’t after that…I’ll be quite surprised.”

Surprisingly, you hear the click of the line from the other side – this time she was the one to hang up on you. A moment later you hear a ping from your cellphone, showing that the recording had successfully been transmitted to you. You let out an angry sigh, and as you slam the phone back into the receiver, you hear a voice behind you.

“You okay, dude?”

Looks like Cinder is finished with her game.

No problem anon, I really enjoy writing this.

You let out another angry sigh and turn to look at Cinder, who’s looking at you with mild concern. She’s leaning against the desk casually, but you can tell by her furrowed brows and crossed arms that she’s tense.

“Another call from 0phelia.” You mutter, grabbing your phone and downloading the recording you had taken. “She’s fucking crazy, I swear. Saying how I have skills that she needs, and that she’s going to become the best with my help…why can’t she just leave me alone?”

Cinder looks at you, and then hesitantly reaches out to clasp your shoulder firmly. She says nothing, but she’s relaying a hell of a lot of concern from those bright blue eyes. You close your eyes and exhale, her gesture calming you just a bit.

“Regardless of that, I have her on recording – mind if I send it to you? I’d like to make as many copies as possible just in case she like…hacks my phone or something.” Cinder nods in response, and you two go through the whole rigamarole of sharing a file over Bluetooth, because that’s a feature Bluetooth has in case you didn’t know that.

Just as the transfer completes, a notification up on your phone – shit, it’s closing already? You look outside and notice that the sunset has nearly faded, the murkiness of the night sky already upon you. Goddamn, you can hardly believe the day is already ending.

You decide to give the arcade-goers a little bit of extra time, going around the desk again and sitting at the computer. Cinder follows and leans on the back of the chair as you type in the link to the social forum that pros tended to use – it gave the fans an avenue to chat with the players they admired as well as insight into how they’re doing, so most coaches told players to get a profile if only so someone didn’t begin to impersonate you.

You type in your username and password, and the page begins to load up. You’re surprised that they didn’t mess with this account as well, since this website was funded by Auxilia Systems themselves. Either way, you’re brought to your old profile page, and you can’t help but cringe.

Nah, you guys are stuck with me this time around! No college means nothing to do for around four months, so unless something pops up I'll be hanging around here.

Originally you came on here in the interest of expediency, but you find yourself tempted by red numbers of the notification bar. A long time ago, you remember staring at it dutifully just in case someone wanted to chat. When your popularity skyrocketed, it almost became too much to bear – you couldn’t really have meaningful interactions with people when others were clamoring to be a part of the conversation as well. Despite knowing what lies beyond it, you mouse over to it and click, but not without taking care of that edgy bio. You really didn’t know what had gotten into you at that age.

The site loads up a page that lists every interaction that had came your way whilst you were gone. As you expected, a lot of it is hate mail – a melting pot of cursing, slurs, how much you had disappointed the community, how people were coming to slit your throat. You know, pleasant shit like that.

“Geez, these guys can be ruthless…” Cinder remarks from behind you, cringing at a graphic description from some guy named WARSCAPERX77. Beforehand it would have left quite an impact on you, however now you only find humor in the generic name – some people were really lame, huh? You continue to peruse down the list despite yourself, and as you get to more recent things, you find a few well wishes dispersed with hate comments that had been incited due to the recent news articles.

“You gonna post the recording or what? It’s getting late.” Cinder comments, not heeding your sudden emotions.

Rather than heeding her words and uploading the recording asplanned, you find yourself moving the cursor over to the social tab, clicking on it and letting it load. On here the comments were more pronounced, and they all seemed to be on your last activity that you posted all that time ago – more scathing remarks, but you weren’t bothered by them. What you were looking for is the team group that your captain had created – and you were shocked to find that you hadn’t been kicked from it.

Loading into it, you find that it’s entirely inactive, which doesn’t shock you. Like Cinder had said, your team seemingly dissolved when you bailed, but no one ever bothered to delete the group. On the sidebar you spot the cluster of names that belong to your old team – none of them are online right now, thankfully. You begin rifling through their profiles.

>USER: orange
From the looks of things, Orange hasn’t been on the scene since a few months after you left. No updates, no recent games shown, not even a different profile picture. A shame, he’s a damn good player.

>USER: BU5TER
Buster was seemingly a hell of a lot more active, having taken up a position on a team that you don’t recognize. From the looks of his profile picture, he doesn’t seem to be very different – a cocky smirk with his eyes obscured by sunglasses, ratty blonde hair framing his wide face. His last status was about him dunking on a team he had beaten a week ago. How quaint.

>USER: Drifter
Drifter was similarly as active as Buster, having secured a spot on w0nderland. You vaguely recall Cinder telling you that it was the #5 team in the league? Good for her. Rather than having a picture of herself, she had a picture of her avatar – it seems she’s keeping with her desperado aesthetic. Wide hat, a poncho-esque item slung over her shoulders, and a hard-set frown. No status updates on her end, she was never the type to communicate with a lot of people.

And finally, you mouse over to the final member. Your team captain. You gulp out of nervousness, but you click on his profile.

>USER: Fletcher
Fletcher has gone solo, as he isn’t listed under any professional team. His profile picture is simple – he’s standing in front of a white background, his black hair and dark coat standing out against it. He had always been more of a serious type; however, you knew he was a very kind man behind his intimidating looks. No updates on his end either.

The buzz from your phone interrupts your thoughts – another notification about the closing time. You shake your head and sigh, standing from your chair and looking around the arcade. You can’t see anyone from here, but you’re aware that some people are most likely still hooked up to the VR machines.

You’d worry about the recording later.

We could always post it on a bbs anonymously, though.

“Cinder, watch the door for me whilst I get everyone off of the machines, please.” You say to her as you move behind the partition, wandering deeper into the arcade and still hearing her call back a response.

“You should hire me at this rate, with how much I’m covering your ass!” Her tone is one of jest, and it makes you crack a smile despite the memories brought on by your old team. She wasn’t exactly wrong, a lot of the time you asked her to do little things around the arcade, but you knew she’d voice her concerns if she had a problem with it.

She’s a good friend.

As you suspected, there are quite a few people still on the machines. You walk over and open the side panels, pressing the button and notifying those in game to get the fuck out of game. After the long and arduous process of manually getting everyone out – you really needed to install the automatic notifiers Alexis keeps talking about – and you once again find yourself at the front desk. You walk over to the door and flip the sign over to Closed – a lot of places had a sign that did it automatically, but you’d like to think that there’s a rustic charm to the place in that regard.

“I’m guessing you don’t want to stick around tonight?” Cinder says, her legs propped up on your desk and her form the very picture of relaxation.

>Yeah, you’re going to head home – she can stay if she wants, though. You trust her.
>Actually, you wouldn’t mind sticking around – what 0phelia said unnerves you a little bit.

“Actually, I think I’ll hang around. What 0phelia said bothers me, so I’d like to hang around the place just in case she sends someone to mess it up. Also, there’s the matter of deciding what to do with the recording.” You tell her, waggling your phone at her for emphasis. She shrugs her shoulders with a snicker, standing and vaulting over the desk rather than going through the partition.

“Well, I’ll be playing Warscape if you need me. Get in touch with me if something happens!” She pats you on the shoulder again, but her eyes are serious. “Seriously.”

“I will, I will. You’re a lot stronger than me anyways, so I can at least use you as a bodyguard.” You reply, brushing off her hand and walking towards the desk. You hear her footsteps fade as she walks towards the VR machines, so you allow yourself to relax into your office chair.

Alright, let’s focus on what you know.

You highly doubt Rock will be back tonight, so you’ll put the matter of his issue to the side. Right now you need to focus on everything that went down with 0phelia – namely the vaguely hidden threat she had thrown your way.

>“I think you’ll be joining…soon enough.”

What could she have meant by this? A few possibilities pop up in your head – vandals, more incessant pestering, finding more people that hate your guts to come over…you don’t doubt that she would push things to the extreme if she didn’t get her way soon, since now she seems to have a personal vendetta all because you don’t want to join her fucking shitty team. God, you hate her.

And there’s also the matter of the audio recording of the whole call – you were going to post it to your profile earlier, but now that you’re thinking about it, it might not totally be the best move? Either way, you need to come to a decision on that, if only for the sake of it being out of your thoughts.

>Upload it to your social page – if she wants to swing first, you’ll swing right the fuck back.
>Upload It anonymously to a BBS – it’ll spread like wildfire, and hopefully it wouldn’t be traced back to you.

You shake your head – uploading it would most likely do more harm than good, even if it would feel cathartic to do so. Instead you decide to keep it close to your chest, making sure not to spoil the fact that you do have a semblance of proof with the recording. With that in mind, you upload it to the cloud just in case she somehow gets it off of your phone, and you make a mental note to save a few copies on your PC at home. It never hurts to be careful, especially in the face of an angry gamer.

As you do so, you hear the crackle of thunder from outside accompanied by drops of rain. When you glance out the windows, you see the dark blue light from the arcade reflected in the heavy drops falling. It looks quite peaceful, honestly, but you feel too on edge to really enjoy it. You felt like you were playing a game of chess with this girl – at least in Warscape you didn’t have to think much, all you have to do is win.

You let out a long sigh as you find your mind wandering back to your team – more importantly, the message Fletcher had left on your profile. A part of you would love to speak with him again, however the majority of your mind is rebelling against that. You were afraid to face him again – afraid of what he would say due to you walking out on them. You had left without much warning in the first place, so you wouldn’t blame him for having a problem with you as well. You were really wishing 0phelia hadn’t came into your life, because now you were thinking about the past that you managed to leave behind in the first place.

Just as you’re about to curse her mentally, the sound of thunder cracks right over the building and everything in the arcade goes dark.

Fucking hell, a power outage?

>Poke your head out the door, check if the rest of the street is out too.

You grumble to yourself as you make your way towards the back of the arcade, almost running into a few machines as you do. You aren’t used to walking around this place in the dark – power outages were a rarity for you, and even if you’d like to blame the circumstances on someone cutting the power, you aren’t that conspiratorial. Shit happens.

After you end up having a tiny bit of difficulty, you consider taking out your phone and using the flashlight to try and locate your pal. However, when you reach for it, you are reminded of the fact that you left it at the desk, and you’re halfway through the damn building by now. You really should have prepared for this better, you think to yourself. You can’t believe this shit.

“Cinder, you dead?” You call into the darkness jokingly, moving around what you believe to be a Tetris XXV machine. You listen and receive a response in the form of a few footsteps and what you think is a giggle?

Okay, you see what’s going on here. She’s staying quiet as a joke, a prank, and other such synonyms of the word. You’ll just have to find her in this impromptu game of hide and seek! Honestly, it beats sitting around in the chair until the power came back on. Fuck it, you’ll play.

You pause in place and close your eyes, trying to focus on the environment around you. As much as you have a distaste for the game, you try and channel instincts that you had forged in Warscape into reality. A few moments pass, the only sound in the air being the pounding of rain against the roof and a distant crackle of thunder…and then you hear it.

The sound of footsteps circling around you. Holy shit, you didn’t expect to hear anything! Nice! From what you can tell, she’s somewhere behind you – judging by the route you took to get to this particular spot, she would have to be in an open space if your hearing is correct. You find yourself smirking, you thought this would take way longer than it had. The only question is…how do you approach her? There’s so much to think about when it comes to hide and seek. Why isn’t there a game based around that concept, huh?

You pause in place and feign looking around you until you hear her footsteps stop in place. You roll your shoulders and without much of a second thought, you turn on your heel and fucking bolt to where you think she is.

You can’t help but grin when you hear a small squeak in front of you – looks like you were dead on after all. You extend your arm outwards a bit, hoping to grab her wrist during her initial confusion. It would take some serious dexterity, but you were feeling pretty spry after that sudden sprint, and as you reach out you prepare to steady yourself when you grab her.

Unfortunately, your weren’t prepared for her to duck out of the way, messing up your rhythm something fierce. With your sudden momentum generated by your arm having nowhere to go, your attempt to steady yourself fails as you careen forward at a fast pace. This accomplishes two things – one, you feel your hand graze her arm. Two, you’re pretty sure you’re taking her down with you if you continue at this space.

What do you do?

You briefly consider trying to stop yourself on one of the machines that are next to you, and you even consider not trying to stop it and trying to lessen the impact. However, your mind begins clear. You would not feed into the cycle of guys falling on girls. This isn’t one of those animes. You aren’t the daft protagonist of some isekai story. The rules of nature hold NO LAW OVER YOU GODDAMNIT.

The cycle ends here.

You try and maneuver yourself so that you’re not about to drive your shoulder into her, and instead reach out your other arm to press against the machine behind her. You snake your arm around her waist and pivot, slamming your back against the machine but stopping the both of you from taking a tumble.

Fuck, that kind of hurt though.

>Wolfgang O’Neal
>Health: 9/10

All is silent between the two of you as you pant, the movements you had made taking the wind out of you. You can feel her in front of you, your arm still around her waist and some of her hair splayed across your arm. Once you were certain that you had steadied yourself, you let her go.

“Found…you.” You say between breaths, your heart pounding due to the exertion. She doesn’t respond for a few seconds, assumedly because she’s calming down herself.

“Y-Yeah! You sure did!” Her voice is strangely high-pitched, and you hear her stepping away from you. “Sorry for the impromptu hide and seek, I thought it’d be funny…”

“In the dark? Around expensive machinery?” You can’t help but respond, looking in her general direction with a raised eyebrow that she couldn’t even see.

“Well, isn’t that the way to play it?” Her voice returns to normal as if nothing had been odd about it, and you both share a chuckle.

The moment of levity is then interrupted by a loud crack of thunder and the sound of shattering glass from the front of the store.

BEFORE THAT: FUCK 0PHELIA
>>
You feel a quick flash of terror spike down your spine as you instinctively step away from the noise, reaching out blindly to the left to assure that Cinder was still there. When you feel your hand bump against her arm, you find yourself able to exhale.

>”I think you’ll be joining…soon enough…”

Is this what she meant? You couldn’t know, considering you didn’t even know what the fuck broke the glass. Either way, you needed to find out what was going on and try to extricate yourself from the situation – the power was still out, and therefore your CCTV camera was fucking dead. Anything that happened now wouldn’t be recorded, and that made you feel exposed in a manner that makes your heart pound in fear.

Either way, time wouldn’t pause on account of your contemplation. You drop into a crouch and move forward, trying to keep yourself obscured just in case the offender could see well in the dark. Without making noise, you manage to make your way towards the now clear sound of rain splashing against pavement. You peer around a machine, hoping that there would be some form of light source to work with – unfortunately the street is still powered off, and the moon is seemingly obscured by clouds.

Shit just keeps going against you, huh?

You hear footsteps behind you, shortly accompanied with a pat on the back – Cinder’s right behind you, and that makes you feel safer if only for the fact that she’s way stronger than you. After casting a hesitant glance towards the rest of the room, you slowly make your way towards where you think the desk is. Thankfully, you succeed in not being spotted, although when you reach it you hear another deafening crash as another window is busted.

This solidifies the fact that this might be 0phelia’s doing. If it was someone seeking to get into your till, they would have just climbed in and climbed out. Since they broke more than one, it meant that this was a message or an intimidation tactic – and it was just so conveniently timed that it happens when your CCTV camera and alarms are disabled.

Does nature have a vendetta against you now? Is this what you get for littering that one time? Fucking mother nature is an asshole, goddamn.

Setting aside the issue of nature’s machinations, you find the partition and open it, moving inside on your hands and knees. Once you cross that threshold, you scuttle over and swipe your phone off of the surface and pull it close.

You move back out of the desk, nearly bumping into Cinder as you do – Christ, she’s literally right behind you! As you slink through machines as close to the ground as possible, you hear a noise that perturbs you.

A grunt, followed by glass falling and crunching underfoot. Oh dear, the person’s inside now.

You pick up the pace a little and move towards the Warscape machines without much incident, covering the phone with your shirt as you reach them and turning down the brightness. You tap at the emergency call button, dialing 911 as fast you can with a now trembling hand.

When you bring it to your ear, the operator has already answered.

“911, what is your emergency?”

Looks like power isn’t dead on that side of town, thank god.

You keep your voice as low as you can while you begin to explain the situation to the man, nervously glancing towards the sound of footsteps that are now audible over the pouring rain. When questioned for further details, you give all that you know – the line goes silent for a few moments, and those moments feel like an eternity to you. Soon, the man returns.

“We’ve sent a car out your way, it will be there in fifteen minutes. Please stay on the line for the duration.”

You curse mentally as you remember that the station is across town from you – fifteen minutes was plenty of time for you to get your shit stomped in by a wayward vagabond. You suppress your irritation, instead muttering that you’d stay on as long as you’re able to.

What do you do?

Dammit anons, now she can claim the recording was forged after this incident. Sure some people won't believe her but in all likelihood, many will.

We also need to protect the server banks, and security logs. If these idiots destroy them then we can't prove she was here, nor that she is violent.
>>
>>3523757
Tell Cinder to get her phone out. Let see if we can't get pictures of the asshole fucking up our workplace.

Tell Cinder to stay put behind the counter, and leg it for the CCTV room. The Intruder might be going for recording/tapes that show her having temper tantrums, and that, combined with the veiled threats might be enough to fuck her over.

maybe get the police involved? If the police show no interest, then we post all of it online and let the internet fuck her over.

So not to say it’s impossible, but you think it’s possible this is unrelated to 0philea? Like I said there’s a good chance it is her, but I think it’s just as likely that this is some other ass hay with a vendetta. this seems a bit to brash even for her.
>>
>>3524080
It's possible but there are quite a few coincidences. The power was cut off and they made sure to break the store's glass when thunder sounded. Sure the latter point could be done by any criminal, but the former means that these criminals spent a short while scoping the place out, they found the power cables and cut off the power. This is likely to have been premeditated.
Now why would a group of random thugs waste their time being sneaky when we're just a gamestore?

Also QM, did we back up the cctv footage like a couple of us requested or was it only the audio file?
>>
[Good morning, everyone! Back to your regularly scheduled vandalism.

>>3523763
This wins!

>>3524107
I can confirm that the power wasn't cut by someone, it's a natural power outage - the entire street is currently dark, that's why you can't see jack for the current moment. Also you've only backed up the audio file, not the CCTV footage.

Throughout the tension of the situation, it was easy for you to forget that Cinder was still here. If at all possible, you’d prefer it if she escaped without being harmed – she is a close friend after all, and with this happening she’s been dragged into your business without a say in the matter. If you dared to suggest such a thing to her however, she’d probably cuff you around the ear for it – if anything she’d beat the shit out of this guy for daring to encroach on her practice space. Regardless, you need to get her out of here.

“Cinder, I have a plan.” You desperately hope that the thunder and rain masks your voice from the intruder, not caring much if the 911 operator overhears – if the guy got ahold of you, you’d have to think on the fly regardless.

“Yeah?” She’s as cool as a cucumber, her voice not far from you. You can practically picture her pressed against the machine, eyes closed as she searches for any signs of the vandal. The booming footsteps stopped a minute ago, and that’s somehow more terrifying – at least before you had an idea of their location, and now all that remains is the tormenting sound of rain. This was like something out of a B-tier horror movie, really.

“We’re going to go to the front, and you’re going to get out. After that, I’ll try and get to the security room so I can grab the records of 0phelia just in case this is her doing. I’ll snap a picture of the guy afterwards, and then I’ll peace out as well.” You think that this is a pretty good plan, but Cinder disagrees.

“And what if you get caught, dude? What if the guy fucks you up?” Cinder whispers with frustration, reaching out and grasping your shoulder before you can respond. “I at least can fight, you’re…well, you’re not very strong. We’ll have a better chance if I stick around.”

You find yourself mentally cursing – why does she need to be stubborn right now? If everything goes off without a hitch, nothing will be harmed except your wallet due to the glass windows you’d need to replace.

That’s if things go off without a hitch, though.

You try and soften your tone as you move to face her fully, putting a hand over the one grasping your shoulder. Time to dump some logic that she’ll hopefully listen to.

“Cinder, it’ll be a lot easier to move around silently by myself. He’ll have a lot harder of a time finding one of us in pure darkness. Plus, I don’t plan on getting caught – he won’t be able to hit me even if he does catch me.” That is a potentially bold-faced lie, but you’re a dexterous man and can evade hits. Whether or not you could do so in total darkness is another matter, and one you’re definitely not going to think about.

Before she has a chance to respond, you lay it on thick – you take her hand off of your shoulder and squeeze it.

“I’d also prefer it if you didn’t get hurt during this. You won’t have to worry, as soon as I complete my plan I’ll be out of here. I promise.” Whilst you may be putting it on a little strong, you mean every word of this – it would tear you up if she got injured, whether this is 0phelia’s doing or not.

She takes a few seconds to process this information, you can only imagine the patented pout-glare she’s sending your way. However, she lets out a bitter sigh and squeezes your hand back.

“Fine. You’re a dick, but fine. Let’s go.” She certainly sounds irritated, but you’d take that over a potential incident. With that squared away, you make your way across the arcade once more carefully. You’re hyper aware of your surroundings, pausing at the slightest unnatural noise. When you make it to the front, you find yourself having to step over the broken glass, the crunching making you flinch as you do. This would be one hell of a mess to clean up in the morning,

“I’ll get ahold of you when I’m out.” You tell her when she’s through the door, already turned around to head towards the security room.

“Stay safe.” She responds, and shortly after you hear footsteps on the pavement as she bolts away.

Alright, time to put your plan into action.

>>
You briefly consider trying to locate the guy but decide against it in the end. Time is definitely of the essence, and every second that you dawdled is a second that they could use to get a bead on your location. This is certainly a risky move, but the quicker you get out, the better.

You move over to the desk and try to put the gentle crunching of glass under your foot out of your mind, instead focusing on navigating to the partition. You briefly consider hopping over the desk, but if you fucked it up you’d be screwed. You ain’t no Dukes of Hazzard, so you move around like a normal person and get in without difficulty.

Just when you let out a sigh of relief, you hear a crash that makes you nearly jump out of your skin. This motherfucker was messing with your arcade machines now? You’d be highly surprised if it wasn’t 0phelia at this point, and if it wasn’t…well, some Warscape players did result to vandalism over a loss. You had experienced it first hand all those years ago, but this extended beyond a house being fucked up…if they kept going, you’d have thousands of dollars’ worth of machinery to fix.

How fucked was the league nowadays? Why couldn’t people learn to let go? You had made your mistakes, and yet they were still being dragged up and displayed at your detriment. Your hatred for the game and community grows more every day, and more importantly towards that fucking persistent bitch 0phelia. If you find out that she did this, you’re going to flip your shit more than you already have.

You stand for the first time in a long while, rushing over to the door and testing the knob. Thankfully you hadn’t locked it, so you move in and shut the door behind you. Even without being able to see clearly, you remember this room if only because of its simplicity.

The room is very small and lacks decorations, only containing a desk, a chair, and a computer. This room was hardly used by you except on the rare occasion that you actually needed to check your security footage, so it sat empty about 99% of the time. You move forward and locate the computer, reaching behind it to unplug everything. As the power is out, you can’t do fuck-all other than taking the whole computer with you – and unfortunately, the amount of wiring you have plugged into the back of this thing is making the process a little slow.

Out of curiosity QM, how would the person see the light of our flashlight? If the door is closed and there aren't any windows then the only way light could shine out is from under the door.

If that's true then.

You hear a few more crashes outside, which makes you wince – not due to fear, but due to the fact that you’ll have to shell more money the more shit gets broken

Regardless of future costs, you finally feel comfortable in turning on your light in the safety of the room – the brightness throws you off guard with your vision being nothing but dark for the last while, but you shake it off as you aim it towards the computer. It’s very nice to be able to see again, and you’re quickly able to get to work in undoing all of the wires. The crashes continue to occur, and some sound very close at times – it spurs you on in finally removing all of the wires.

Occasionally you’re forced to give updates to the 911 operator who still has been on the line for the duration of this, letting him know that you’re safe and that you plan to remove yourself from the premises as quick as possible. He objected to it at first, but upon hearing the crashing he reluctantly conceded that you probably should get going. No matter what he said, you’d be leaving – fuck sticking around during this shit.

You haul the computer off of the ground and onto the desk, managing to mitigate the sound as best you can. It’s quite heavy – you had spared no expense in getting decent wares for the arcade, and while it may be outdated by today’s standards, this computer is a solid one.

Leaning against the desk, you stare at the door with trepidation. Step two of your plan is now completed, so where do you go from here?

You know that it’s best to stick to the original plan, and if you’re lucky you’ll make it out before he can guess where the flash comes from. Normally the guy would be able to find you, but he was just as in the dark as you – it’s no doubt that the sudden flash of the camera might disorient him due to the area being pitch black. With that in mind, you hoist the computer into your arms and move towards the door, gently edging it open just as another machine is broken.

If you actually do get a clear shot of this guy, you’re going to be elated – Alexis can sue them for you, since you didn’t really want to be bothered in all honesty. She may irritate you sometimes, but she’s reliable when it comes to things that you don’t understand.

You set the computer on the desk as you move around it, fishing out your phone and waiting for another machine to get broken. When you hear the noise, you immediately turn your phone’s camera to it and snap a picture, ducking down as soon as you see the flash go off. You hear a low grunt from within the arcade, followed by the stomping of footsteps as whoever it is moves to a new location – thankfully they seemed to be going to the left of you.

You let out a shaky exhale and raise the screen to your face, using your hoodie to shield your cellphone from view. When you look closer at it, you see a remarkably clear picture – and your blood turns cold.

Oh fuck. You didn’t think Rock would be back so soon.

This certainly confirmed the rumors from your days on the circuit – there was no hard evidence of the fact, but people always talked about how Rock would go and pick a fight with whomever he had a problem with, often times vandalizing their property when he couldn’t find them. Judging by the conversation you had with him earlier, he must have ran the clip by someone he trusted – and they convinced him that you had actually cheated against him all those years ago.

Well, now he thinks you’re a cheater and a liar. The police are going to love this.

You hurriedly pull up your messaging app and send the picture to Cinder, closing it directly afterwards just so you don’t have to look at it. If Rock caught you, you’d be dead meat – it’s time to skedaddle.

You slouch back over to the desk and pick up the computer, the weight of the thing causing you to readjust your hold on it. Once you’re assured that you aren’t going to drop it on the way out, an angry shout followed by more crashing causes you to head towards the door immediately. He must be growing impatient as time passes – the police should be here in about 7 minutes if the operator was being truthful.

You turn and walk towards where you know the entrance to be, keeping yourself low to the ground and ignoring the crunching of glass under your uncertain steps. It didn’t really matter if he heard you anymore, because you’re almost home free. You open the door and feel the harsh wind of the storm grace your face, the spray of rain refreshing your sweating body. You take a step forward, feeling invigorated…

And that’s when you realized that fate really must have a vendetta against you.

You hear the sound of scraping against concrete, as if someone was making a sharp turn on foot. It couldn’t have been a millisecond afterwards when you feel a pressure on your torso – something on the computer, and something on your abdomen. With a low noise, you find yourself pushed hard into the arcade, your footing upheaved and your body following suit as you hit the floor.

A second later, you hear the crash of your computer hitting the ground.

Fuck.

You’re taken off guard in a major way, and as if the flash of lighting and the crack of thunder was a starting pistol, you hear booming steps sprinting towards you. You try and scramble up, feeling your palms get cut up by the broken glass. Due to the proximity of the assailant, you hear an exhale as something heavy is picked up from the ground – your fucking computer.

You need to act fast.

>>3524605
I was exaggerating, I doubt there's a real way to delevel her (unless you can lose levels for losing enough matches, I suppose). That said, if she pisses us off enough and the evidence won't stick, it's possible that hammering her online may be the only way to get her to back off.

The question right now is, if Rock's attack wasn't encouraged by her, what IS SHE planning to do to us?

It feels like time slows as you consider your options.

You could either run into the arcade and forsake your CCTV footage, but at the avoidance of the incoming physical harm from Rock. Or you could wrench the computer away from the person, if only to get it away from them in a fucked up game of keep-away. You find your legs tensing, and you spring forward towards the person obscured by darkness.

Looks like you’re gonna be getting a little roughed up after all. You’ll make it up to Cinder later.

You collide with the person, causing them to gasp as they attempt to pull the computer away. Thankfully by upsetting their posture, you ensure that you can take it out of their arms and shove them back just as they had done to you.

Unfortunately, you feel strong hands grasp your shoulders, and then you’re thrown through the fucking air.

Hurtling through an empty building is more terrifying than one would think it to be, and you’re not afraid to emit that you let out a strangled squeak/yelp as your flight is stopped short by one of your arcade machines. Your back erupts in pain, and you think you feel something trickling down the back of your neck? You hear the operator question what had happened from your pocket, but honestly you didn’t plan on responding. You have better things to worry about, especially now that you had a solid assault charge against Rock.

Boy, and they say running an arcade is boring!

>Health: 7/10 (-2)

The computer is still grasped tight in your arms, and you manage to feel out a gap between the machines and shove it inside. Hopefully it’d remain safe there while you deal with this fucking issue. Speaking of said issue, you hear the heavy footfalls of Rock making his way towards you.

What do you do?

I assume we're using anime physics, or else jumping through a window is a good way to get extremely deep cuts from glass. Unless you throw a chair through first, and then carefully jump out. And your shoes protect your feet properly.

Both windows in front are broken, although there is always the shards still in the frame!

You get up off the ground and wince at the pain in your hands and back, however you shrug it off as you stand and try to dart past him. Since you don’t believe he can gauge exactly where you are in the darkness, you’re betting on the fact that you can get around him.

You get close enough to him that you can hear his enraged panting and cursing, and you almost make it past him – unfortunately he must have felt your attempt to move past him, and he reaches to grab your wrist that’s nearest to him. When he grabs it, he gives you a mighty tug, and you’re forced to stay in place.

Fuck, this is the worst place to be.

“You fucking liar…” His voice is nigh on demonic, his grip tightening to a point where you’re wincing.

“You fucked your own team man, stop blaming it on me.” You blurt out as you strain against his iron grip, not exactly caring what comes out of your mouth. Apparently the truth was the wrong thing to say in this situation because he shouts, and you feel his weight begin to shift. It takes you a millisecond to realize he’s aiming a punch at you.

>Wriggle out of his grip and continue forwards! [This will require a roll.]
>Try and counter the blow, sending one right back at him. [This will require a HIGH roll.]
>Try and duck out of the way while remaining in his grasp, saying that you have evidence of what he’s done today.

You manage to wrench yourself out of his hand with all of your might, taking a tumble but scrambling up to your feet as you dart towards the door as quick as you can. You hear a sickening crunch of plastic and metal folding behind you, and you know that his hand must have gone through one of your machines.

“SON OF A BITCH!” He screams after you, but the adrenaline coursing through your body forces the fear down - he won’t be catching you as long as you get through the window. You swear that you can feel his pounding footsteps as he follows like a shark smelling blood, curses spilling from his mouth as he slowly begins to gain ground.

You can feel the wind on your face the closer you get to the windows, and it’s at that moment where you need to make another call. You know someone is at the door keeping you in, and you could go through the windows. However, there’s no telling how broken the windows are – glass cuts hurt like hell, and even if the wind and rain is washing over you, you can’t accurately determine how much glass is still in the frame.

ONE SECOND! ONE FUCKING SECOND!
>>
In the face of an angry gamer chasing you, and also in the face of a shady person blocking the door, you take the next best option – vaulting through the fucking window.

You jump forwards at what you believe is an appropriate time, and you hear Rock grunt in confusion as his fingers graze your back. You fly through the window frame, and thankfully there were no big shards to hinder you – the only thing that meets you is the pavement of the sidewalk, and you don’t pause to register how much it hurt you. You pull yourself up before Rock can follow, and you wildly look up and down the street. The barest hints of moonlight are shining through the clouds, revealing that there are two other people on either side of the sidewalk. You can’t make out any appearances, but Rock brought back-up.

Whether he paid a bunch of vagrants or enlisted some angry friends, you don’t know. All you know is that it’s time to jet.

>Run across the street to get away from the group, you need to get out of here and let the police deal with this. [This will require a roll.]

We don't need to double back, the police will be here in less than 4 minutes. All we need to do is keep them distracted until then.

About the whole computer situation... I have an idea that I wish I had earlier. If we have a screwdriver we could have just opened up the computer and taken out the hard drive instead of grabbing the whole thing. We probably could have just hidden the drive in our pocket and this situation would be quite easier.
>>
Police ETA: 3 minutes.

Actually, no. You can’t go yet – you need to grab your CCTV computer. With the revelation of these goons and that they’re associated with Rock, you can assume that they’re after the computer as well. Why Rock would be after it in the first place is a mystery to you, but stranger things have happened – at least he was only shown being a bit aggressive. Now it’s escalated, and boy is that neat!

“Hey, dickhead!” You call towards Rock, seeing his body outlined in moonlight turning to face you. “Looks like you’re slow as always! No wonder your team bit the dust so fast!”

He lets out a scream of anger, and you feel something sail by your head. Did this bitch just throw your landline at you? Either way, what you said certainly garners his rage, because you see him come through the window and bolt towards you with outstretched arms. You can vaguely make out his entourage closing in as well, so you’re gonna have to act fast.

You aren’t even allowed a second to breathe when you jerk down underneath his charge, sprinting back into the arcade with a burst of energy that you have to drag up from the very depths of your being. The goons also reach to restrain you, but you duck out of the way and even shove one back for good measure – this is fucking insane, that’s for certain. If your memory is correct, you don’t have long to wait before the police show up and start taking care of business.

>Police ETA: 2 minutes.

Whether you were going to remain for questioning or not, you need to get that computer somewhere off the premises. They know what to look for now, and you need this as evidence not only against Rock due to tonight’s events, but 0phelia as well for obvious reasons. Even if she didn’t directly cause this incident (you think), you’re going to blame her for everything from now on. It’s due to her that your address was plastered online, after all! And for the moment she has deniability – hopefully with the combination of the CCTV footage and your audio recording you’ll be able to dash away her lies that she told the press.

With some semblance of light due to the moon, you have a vague idea of where you’re going now and can easily spot the machine that you were tossed into. One of the ancient shooters from arcades of old, you would have a hard time replacing this one when all is said and done. You hear the doors crash against the wall as Rock enters the building again, and just as you see his eyes fall on you, you feel something pull on your sleeve and drag you back into the shadows of the Warscape machines.

“Heya, boss.” You can see the moonlight reflect off of Cinder’s pearly white grin.

[Yo! I’m back.]

Even if you had told her to go, you can’t deny the relief you feel with her coming out of nowhere like this.

“After this, I’m gonna double your salary.” You whisper, pressing your back against the machine as you listen to the muffled conversation from outside. The rain has let up a bit, and as such more details of the environment are available to you – namely the pacing of Rock as he stalks across the floor, the sound of distant sirens, and the sound of one of the goons running off. The police sirens must have set them on edge, as they damn well should – to be completely honest you didn’t care if the ones outside got pinched, all you care about is Rock getting what he deserves.

“But…you don’t pay me?” Cinder responds tentatively, her own eyes nervously darting towards the areas around this cluster of cabinets. Shadows now dance in the slowly intensifying moonlight, and that puts you on edge in a bad way. Regardless, you’re very happy that she fell into your reference even in this tense period of time.

“Then I’ll triple it.” You take a risk and peek around the corner just in time to see one of your machines be pushed over, the resulting crash causing the glass to sparkle as it flies through the air. You’d call it beautiful if it wasn’t one of your machines that cost you at least a thousand dollars. You’ll definitely have Alexis rake this guy over the coals, because to be honest you don’t know the first thing about law or any of those procedures.

If memory serves you right, the computer is wedged in-between the gap right in front of you. You could absolutely snatch it and try to make your way out again, but you don’t know how ballsy you feel with Rock fully aware of your presence as of now. Staying put is certainly an option too, however you don’t know if the police will take the computer as evidence if they discover it. The distant sirens taunt you.

How do you proceed?

>Snatch and run, the police would easily be able to find out where you live – you just need to make sure the computer is safe so you can copy the CCTV footage. [This will require a roll.]

“How did you get in here? I know I heard you run off earlier.” You keep your voice as low as you can, the sounds of Rock’s mayhem weighing heavily on your mind.

“I did, but when you sent me the picture, I figured I should come back just in case. I know you told me to go, but like…it’s Rock. I can already see he got to you.” She gestures to your bruised wrist in particular, leaning back against the machine. “And I just came in through the window when you jumped out, since I didn’t see you with the computer I thought I’d grab it for you. Couldn’t find it, though.”

“But…what about the people on the sidewalk? They didn’t stop you?”

“There weren’t any when I was out there, I was surprised to see other people around.”

That’s…honestly pretty fucking strange. Did those people not come with rock? Were they 0phelia’s subordinates? You’ve attracted so much ire over the past few days that it’s hard to say.

“So, do you still have a plan, or are we waiting it out?” She implores.

>Police ETA: 1 minute.

>Go with the plan and peel out of here, with Cinder helping you out you’re sure you can escape Rock’s wrath one last time.

“I think I’ll stay here. I’d rather not get beat on again, and I’ll just hope no one messes with it when they take me in for questioning.” You groan and run a hand down your face, slumping against the cold plastic of the machine with resignation. You’d just place hope in the fact that the police wouldn’t let people go through the fucked-up building, but you’ve become well aware just how crafty determined people could be. You weren’t worried about anyone from the town coming in, just people who happened to have seen your address online.

All this work put into hiding away from the world, and all of it’s gone in a blink of an eye. It hadn’t really hit you until just now, but the thorough thrashing of your shop really hammered it in for you. You’re going to get back at 0phelia if it’s the last thing you do.

How would you even do that, though? Post the audio file online and start a smear campaign? Align old fans to harass her so she has a hard time playing? Fuck 0phelia merchandise? The possibilities are endless!

“Yeah, that’s fa-…” Cinder begins to speak, but then trails off as her eyes widen and slowly pan from your face to above you. You feel a very hot breath wash over your neck and shoulders, and your heart seizes. It couldn’t have been more perfectly timed, really.

Are you fucking kidding right now? Is this dude like a goddamn velociraptor?

Your body is a bit slow to react to this, jerking forward as you hear a malicious chuckle come from his throat. You would have been caught, but thankfully Cinder’s reflexes are quicker than yours – she grabs you and practically yanks you away from the machine with surprising force. While this does a good job in getting you away from Rock, it leaves her wide open – and he takes advantage, driving his foot into her abdomen.

“Ugh…” She coughs out a groan, managing to roll away herself a moment before he brings his foot down once more.

Oops indeed, you dunderhead. We lost everything now, unless he just feels like beating us yo a pulp.
>>
You exchange a look with Cinder, her eyebrows knitted together in pain. You both look at the door at the same time, and that’s all it takes for you two to sprint forwards. You duck to Rock’s left, and she goes to his right – with the most precision that you can muster in the current moment, you spin around and pull the computer from the gap with all of your might. Through some miracle, it doesn’t tumble from your hands and you’re able to spring away from Rock’s fist once again.

With what you know at the moment, there shouldn’t be anyone lingering outside. You heard one of them run off earlier, and something tells you that the sirens will soon be sending the others in the same direction. You’re working with an extremely limited timeframe, and you’d guesstimate that you have about 30 seconds to be clear before the police show and make you go in for questioning. After the beating you’ve sustained, you’ll be honest – you don’t fucking feel like it right now.

“Looks like I’m making a break for it, operator. See ya!” You still remember the man being on the line throughout this whole experience, so you stick your hand in your pocket to shut off your phone as you run forwards. You’re certain that it makes the way you’re running look silly, but who the fuck cares right now really? Cinder goes through the door and makes a sharp left turn, taking the computer from your grasp as you go through the window once more.

You two certainly worked like a well-oiled unit. If she was on your team back in the day, no doubt you’d have had even more success.

You follow her lead in taking a hard left, and you both bolt down the sidewalk as fast as you can, the intimidating sound of Rock’s screams hounding you all the way down. As if fortune was shining down on you just this once, you can see the quick rhythm of red and blue lights begin to reflect off of a store window – just when you think that the jig is up, Cinder sharply yanks you by the collar into an alleyway that leads to the adjacent block. She waits for you to take a second to catch your breath, and then you both run as fast as your legs can take you. As you flee the scene, you catch one sentence that makes you feel some innate sense of satisfaction.

“GET ON THE GROUND, NOW!”

Gotcha, bitch.

>Make your way home and pass the fuck out.

[And this is where I’m ending it for tonight, folks. I was originally planning to go a bit longer, but I ended up having an unpleasant interaction with my mother and I’m not really feeling up to writing at the moment! I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed reading so far and I apologize if my quality took a hit during the middle of the day, as I certainly felt it did. If you’d like to, please give me some feedback! I want to make this quest better so everyone has a better time viewing it overall. Have a good night, and I’ll see you bright and early in the morning.]

Still loving the quest Cirno, thanks for running. Hope things get better for ya.

we got to invest in some protection for both the arcade and for personal defense. better cameras, an insurance policy, a shotgun under the counter, anything.

[Good morning, everyone! I have an improved title card for the next thread. I’m not going to spoil it, but it’s the best thing.]

The gentle brushing of the morning light against your eyelids is what rouses you from your deep slumber, body aching in ways that you didn’t know it could due to last nights events. Your back feels like someone’s worked you over with a meat tenderizer, and upon opening your bleary eyes and rolling over, you can see dried blood on your pillow from where the back of your head was busted open. You shake your head and sit up, blankets shrugging onto the floor as you do.

Holy hell, last night was insane.

>Wolfgang O’Neal
>Heath: 8/10 (+2)

You could almost say that the scene was taken out of some action film, if not for the lingering aches racking your body. Not only are you not used to taking pain, but that was the most exercise you’ve gotten physically in who knows how long. You’ve managed to maintain a pretty slim frame over the years, but that’s only due to frugal living – you’ll be feeling the soreness in your legs for days.

“Fuckin…ugh…” Your voice is groggy as you move your head away from the light, the sun’s glare unrelenting. You briefly contemplate just stripping out of your clothes and limping to the shower, but a snore from the living room reminds you that you’re not alone in the apartment for once.

Looks like your dramatic shower scene has been avoided on this day.

>Get up and inspect your wounds in the mirror.
>Find your cellphone, it’s not on your side table.
>Poke your head out and check on Cinder, she had a hard night too.

You force your legs over the side of your bed despite their protests, standing up and wincing at the intensified ache. You feel like you’ve ran about five blocks nonstop, which is actually what you had done! Things are a bit of a haze after you ran down the alleyway, but you know for a fact that you kept the pace up once you collected yourself. You aren’t an athlete, and that certainly shows.

Moving over to the door of your room with labored steps, you stick your head in the room to locate your pal – you had thought she would have gone home on her own after you both arrived, but you recall her pushing in and collapsing onto the couch without a word. You would have given her shit for it, but you did the exact same thing, so you don’t have room to talk. Both of you were exhausted.

As it turns out, she hasn’t seemed to have moved from her position whatsoever. A leg is hitched over one of the arms of the couch, her hair splayed out all over the place and a trail of drool leaking from the corner of her mouth. She must have forgotten her hoodie at the arcade earlier, showing off what appears to be a w0nderland branded shirt that must have ridden up during the night – while her exposed stomach may have been considered a bit of idyllic fanservice under normal circumstances, the angry purple and red bruise extending from her belly button to her side dashes those thoughts real quickly. You have no doubt in your mind that it will take a while to heal.

The sight of Rock stomping on her still make your blood boil.

You duck back into your room and grab one of your blankets that you have folded up in a box under your desk – now it seems you finally have a use for them! They just kinda sit there and collect dust since you only use the one on your bed. It’s good to be prepared, kids!

You walk over to her and cover her with it – you’d worry about being subtler about the action, but you doubt that you could wake her up if you tried. She’s out for the count, it seems – you’ll let her wake up on her own. With the matter of Cinder’s modesty and warmth squared away, you adjust your gaze to the rest of the room to search for your phone.

Thankfully, you find it immediately in the living room chair along with the computer that you worked your ass off to save. You can see the notification light flashing a variety of colors, showing that you have a multitude of things to work through momentarily. Rather than fearing the unknown and what it holds, you reach over and snatch it off of the chair. You don’t recall having turned the phone back on after leaving the arcade, but you’ll chalk that up to your memory being flawed. Switching it on, you’re immediately greeted with a whole fucking list of things to look through.

You briefly consider not facing the world and just shutting your phone off right here and now, but you’re stronger than that – besides, it might be important. You unlock your phone and walk into the kitchen, leaning against the counter – fucking hell your back hurts – and clicking on your messages to see who’s getting ahold of you.

>Alexis: (45 unread messages.)

Well, this is a bit surprising – not the fact that she’s messaged you, but the fact that she’s sent so many. You hesitate for a second before clicking, but anything she says is a pill best taken now so you don’t have to think about it later.

>Hey! Saw some sirens coming out your way, did you have a heart attack or something? Lol.
>What’s uuuuuup? Seems like your side of town’s pretty active, they’re sending even more cars your way! Keep safe, you hear?

The messages start out very casual, just like how she would speak regularly. After scrolling down a few more jokes and wisecracks, they take a pretty hard tonal shift.

>Yo, what the fuck happened last night? I just saw some weird shit on the news – are you good?

This is the start of various questions and comments about the arcade, your condition, and everything else shown on the news. From what little you could gather, the police had a lot of trouble restraining Rock – they managed to do it, but four officers got knocked out in the scuffle.

Holy shit, dude.

Her messages stopped for a few hours, and then they picked up again.

>Are you okay? I’m on my way over.
>Your apartment’s locked, let me in.
>Fine, I’ll come in myself.

You glance over to the door – it’s indeed unlocked, and that makes you frown. The final message she sent is a simple one.

>Call me when you wake up.

You’d like to say it was out of character for her to worry this much, but you knew better than a lot of people that she stresses easily. With her basically presiding over your building and apartment for the past few years, you can’t bring yourself to comment on this in a negative way – as irritating as her personality could be to your broody ass self, it was nice to know that she’s looking out for you.

Swiping over to the call screen, you can see three of the missed calls are from her, and one of them is an unknown number. She’s left a voicemail for you, and so has the unknown caller.

>Get in contact with Alexis to assure her that you’re alright.

You open the refrigerator and grab a can of soda, opening the tab and drinking some as you go over to your voicemail app. Soda wasn’t exactly the best thing to be drinking early in the morning and on an empty stomach, but you’d rather have that before having milk straight out of the jug. Shit’s just not kosher man, especially when you’ll be sharing that milk with Cinder once you make breakfast. There are many things to consider when more than one person is in your home.

From the looks of it, Alexis’s was from early in the night, around when she first started texting you. When you turn it on, you can hear the sounds of sirens in the background – damn, they really must have sent a lot of cars.

>”Heya! Just calling to see how you’re doing, because holy FUCK there’s a lot of police heading out that way. Might wanna tell Cinder to get home, since she’s prooooobably practicing like usual. Since you’re not picking up…are you playing with her? Did playing against that 0phelia girl reignite your competitive spirit? Should we start putting up signs that the famous Nova is open to all challengers!? Hah, just fucking with you man. Gimme a call back.”

Your face is a strange mixture of fondness and irritation – like hell she’s ignited your “competitive spirit”, all she’s done is ignite anger that you haven’t felt before. Speaking of 0phelia, you’re guessing that the unknown number is her. The voicemail has a little purple tag showing it was left on the arcade’s phone line, which you guess is now your cellphone since Rock broke the fucking thing trying to throw it at your head. You let out a harrowing sigh and turn it on.

>”Hello…it seems you’re in a…bit of a bind. You should…call this number back. I can promise…it will be a fruitful endeavor.”

You want to slam your head into your fucking counter. You’d ask yourself if she knew when to cease, but you’re well aware that she possesses no logic or tact anywhere in her body. You’re going to deal with her somehow today, although how you’ll do it is something you’re still working on. Maybe it’s the head wound affecting you, but you want this girl out of your life – two days of this has been long enough.

You shake your head as you dial Alexis’s number – thinking about 0phelia this early in the morning will only give you a headache, you’ll deal with her when you’re more awake and have more energy to spare processing the bullshit that spews from her mouth.

The line rings for a few seconds, and then you hear a click as she accepts the call.

“Yo.” You start off as casually as you can, keeping your voice low as to not accidently disturb Cinder. You still don’t think she’ll wake up, but better safe than sorry – you remember how angry Drifter would get when you went to her room to get her up. The team drew straws for that particular task.

“What the FUCK, dude?” Her loud voice comes through the receiver, and you pull it away from your ear. Fuck, that hurt.

“What are you referring to?” You say with irritation, walking back towards your room if only to have a semblance of privacy. With the tone of Alexis’s voice, literally anyone who stood within a five-foot radius could hear her words.

“The arcade! Rock! You!” She continues, and you can almost picture her pacing back and forth as she spouts off. “Your bed looked like a fucking murder scene when I walked in!”

When you cross the threshold to your room, you glance towards the bed. She’s exaggerating, there’s not that much blood – just a few patches on your pillow! Pointing this out might have mixed results, however, so you don’t.

“Not as bad as it looked. The wound, I mean.” You press your fingers to it and hiss, it’s scabbed over but it certainly doesn’t feel pleasant.

“Who the fuck cares! Have the police gotten in touch with you!?”

“Not yet.”

You can hear her scream into a pillow. Damn, she’s really worked up – you haven’t seen her like this before.

“I’m coming over right now. Be ready.”

“Hey, wa-“

The line goes dead before you can finish your sentence. Well, this is how your morning is going to go, you guess. It’s still nice to know that she cares, though.

[Sorry for the wait! Gonna go make myself some lunch, be back soon! Hope you’ve enjoyed.]

You stare at the phone for a few seconds before shooting a text to Alexis, telling her to be quiet on her way in since Cinder’s still sleeping. You shake some of the sleep from your brain as you walk back into the kitchen, tapping on the article that claims to have breaking news. When it loads up, the top of the page also says BREAKING NEWS!

This aggressive advertisement tactic works well on people like you who are searching for breaking news.

>BREAKING NEWS! Former Team Leader of Genesys Arrested for Vandalism???

The article goes on to explain the situation in as much detail as a poorly written, highly popular news site can muster. It says that Rock was reported to have been caught in the act of vandalizing an arcade, throwing in some vague references that it belongs to you but never outright stating it. They particularly highlight the fact that Rock strong-armed through many policemen, knocking out four of them and only being subdued when hit with four tasers at once.

>From the looks of things, the rumors about him must be true! For those who don’t know, it’s been said that Rock goes to beat up people that he doesn’t like, as well as breaking their stuff if he can’t find them! The owner of Cascade Arcade was nowhere to be found, however from pictures it looks like some blood can be seen on one of the machines! Such a mystery, right? We’ll keep you updated as more details come out! See you next time, gamers!

And of course, they had to throw a namedrop in. You begin making a pot of coffee as you idly skim over the other article – this one doesn’t hesitate in using your name, and it actually is a better written article overall – it’s sure to cover your past in the scene, your recent resurgence, and it what could have led you to this particular career choice. You still don’t like the fact that it’s covering you in the first place, but at least there’s no misinformation or attempts to clickbait! You hate this one a little bit less.

[I hid something from you, anons, and I’m sorry for that…you have a +15 to cooking related rolls already, I just wanted to see if you’d get a 4 or under. Literally cooking 99.]

You set your phone down, fully deciding to not pay any mind to it until you finish the bomb ass breakfast you’re about to make. Admittedly you don’t know what Alexis and Cinder like for breakfast, and you don’t often get the chance to cook for guests (much less yourself), so you think that it’s a perfect opportunity to show them your COOKING PROWRESS. You go back into your room and take off your bloody top, replacing it with a black undershirt and a button-up green plaid t-shirt. You check yourself out in the mirror – you could do better, but you want to get breakfast done before Alexis shows up.

With that in mind, you begin to get to work. You do take a quick walk down to the corner store to pick up some items that you need, but as it’s literally just a minute away from your apartment, it doesn’t take too long to get back. You then proceed to cook your ass off for the first time in years – and as you do, you hear the sound of your couch creaking. You look over to see Cinder fully sitting up, her eyes on you lazily as you bustle about the kitchen. Her shirt has slipped down once more, which is good – no lewd content in this fucking virgin’s household, that’s for sure.

“Good morning.” You say to her, setting aside a full plate of perfectly done bacon and sausage. It smells fucking heavenly in here, to be honest – there was a damn good reason why you were the team cook back in the day. Cooking is one of two things that you’re good at, and you always relish in a chance to show that off – the only reason you didn’t cook for yourself more often is due to your work hours.

“You…can cook?” Her voice is nigh-intelligible with how groggy it is, flopping back down onto the couch with the grace of a dead walrus. Considering how early she gets to the arcade some days, her not being a morning person is a bit of a shock to you.

“Yeah, I can.” You give a simple shrug as you start arranging your menagerie of food on the table – it’s quite small, but you can stand so the girls can sit. Speaking of them, you hear a sharp tapping on the door – looks like your other guest has arrived.

“Come on in!” You call into the other room, stylishly flipping the current pancake onto a larger stack of pancakes. You’re going to have leftovers for days, and honestly? You’re pretty okay with that. Breakfast for lunch is a good thing to have sometimes!

You hear the door open, and you catch Cinder raising a hand in greeting from the corner of your eye.

“Hey, Alexis…” She murmurs, yawning and rubbing at her eyes in an attempt to wake herself up. They didn’t interact very often, but over the past five years Cinder’s been privy to the conversations the two of you have together. On occasion, Alexis even invited her to come and have lunch whilst the two of you talked about building related things.

“Good morning, Cinder.” Alexis steps through the door and closes it behind her, sliding off her shoes while looking over in your direction. “Since when do you cook?”

“I’ve always cooked.” You respond, moving the gigantic stack of pancakes over to the table as well. Alexis fixes you with a serious expression - you know she wants to grill you for more information, but you don’t know if you’re feeling up to it, though.

>”Ask away, Alexis.” Might as well answer them as quick as possible so you can have a nice, worry-free breakfast.
>”Let me finish plating, then we’ll talk. Take a seat.” You’re busy getting the last of everything done, and you’re a bit of a stickler for a properly set table.
>”You already know everything, Alexis. No need to discuss it further.” Technically, she’s seen the whole thing on the news – she knows everything that she needs to.

Well she knew where we worked and we don't know if she stalked us home before she first introduced herself to us.
>>
“Go ahead, Alexis.” You roll your eyes and go to fetch some plates, setting them and the appropriate silverware on the table as properly as you can. The table is a bit cluttered, but thankfully you have extra space in the form of the counter right next to it.

“How are you going to replace everything that got broken?” Is the first question she asks, choosing to lean against the refrigerator rather than sitting at the table. Cinder, in the meantime, drags herself off of the couch and slumps over at the table with a wince. Her head is resting against a hand, and the other is resting against her stomach. If your back hurts this bad just by moving, you can’t imagine how she must feel.

“Out of pocket. I have a lot of money left, Alexis. You know I don’t spend all that much – I mean, look around.” You gesture to your apartment’s interior, which is devoid of decoration. “I’m good money-wise.”

“What about charges against Rock? I know the police want to talk to you.” She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small sheet of paper, pressing it into your free hand. “This was stuck to your door.”

Hm, why didn’t they just give you a phone call? You knew that this town’s department was a bit archaic, but that takes the cake. You give it a once over.

>ATTN: Wolfgang O’Neal. Please call the police department at your earliest convenience or come down for questioning about last night’s incident. – Officer Linton

You’re fairly certain that this isn’t proper procedure in the slightest, but you don’t really care.

“I was going to have you handle it.”

“E-Excuse me?”

“You know more about that stuff than me, and you’re practically my lawyer anyways. I need to focus on getting the arcade fixed up, as well as dealing with my influx of problems.” You finish getting the table set-up, pouring a glass of milk for Cinder and a cup of coffee for Alexis. You know that she likes it black, because she’s a strange individual. “Now sit down and eat, I didn’t make this breakfast for looks.”

She’s about to respond, but Cinder beats her to it.

“Speaking of that…what are we gonna do about her? Even if she didn’t cause this directly, it is still her fault…” She yawns and begins shoveling a mound of pancakes and sausage onto her plate, grabbing the bottle of syrup and just drenching everything with it.

That’s…a very good question. You’ve thought about it, but you haven’t settled on an idea yet – there were too many things to consider, along with keeping attention off of yourself in the process. It might be pointless to worry about that at this point, though.

Let's at least turn her fans against her. If we can.

At this point, might be worth it to get interviewed by one of those reporters just to get a chance to play victim against 0phelia.

We might want to call her and see if she'll let anything slip before we post anything anyway.
>>

If that was true, she'd be arrested already. There's nothing forcing her to take the Rock approach. She can put stuff out anonymously and goad her fans and our old rivals. She can keep up what she's been doing forever, and I think she will if she has nothing left to lose.
>>
>>3526283
>maybe by getting on her nerves we can get her to act rashly in public, in that case?
going back to my previous point >>3526238
She will have our phone number in our call history, she can claim that we've been taunting her or blackmailing her for who knows how long. Though >>3526288 is correct with the innocent until proven guilty part, if the overseer begins to doubt our testimony because of what we say here (if we record it) or because we didn't record it and they don't know what we said, then she could escape severe punishment.

>>3526288
>America that means she is still innocent of these crimes.
Yes but nobody will hire her while she's the prime suspect, or if "certain information" comes to light and she's seen negatively in the eyes of the public.
>>

>>
>>3526305
Oh right, sorry I forgot to mention the latter stuff.

>There's nothing forcing her to take the Rock approach.
There was an accomplice to Rock's crimes who, according to Cinder, wasn't there when she arrived. They could be from 0phelia.

>She can put stuff out anonymously and goad her fans and our old rivals.
Additionally, who's to say she didn't talk to Rock after he left and caused this mess?

>She can keep up what she's been doing forever, and I think she will if she has nothing left to lose.
Not if she's in jail anon.
>>
>>3526313
What would she go to jail for?
>>
>>3526314
Well if we can prove that she caused this then we can hit her with an 18 U.S.C. 373 - Solicitation to commit a crime of violence. She persuaded Rock (and others) to commit a crime for her. She'd get half the charge of Rock at best.

Yeah, guess what's going to happen. Ophelia says she didn't do it. Rock refuses to talk. We say we think she did it. No charges are brought because no evidence, and the police are less likely to listen to us in the future.

I guess it hinges on the legality of the recording to at least get a warrant.

You go to answer Cinder, but an idea strikes you before your mind settles on a concrete answer. You reach over and grab your cellphone off of the counter, unlocking your incredibly complex password and moving over to your voicemails.

“When I answered her call yesterday, she implied that something would be coming that would sway me to join her team. This morning, she left a message on the arcade line.” You hold up the phone and replay the message, so that your companions can hear.

>”Hello…it seems you’re in a…bit of a bind. You should…call this number back. I can promise…it will be a fruitful endeavor.”

Cinder’s eyes narrow, while Alexis looks thoughtful.

“Could Rock be what she was talking about? Could she have somehow influenced him to do this?” You propose the question, picking up and eating a piece of bacon as you lean against the counter.

“That would mean that she knew about the conversation we had before, though.” Cinder counters, beginning to devour her food with vicious abandon. She certainly seems more awake now!

“She came all this way, who’s to say she hasn’t left? She’s a girl with brown hair and glasses, it’s not like she stands out. She could have entered while we were occupied with him and we would never have known.” You say, causing Alexis to nod and Cinder to nearly faceplant into the pancakes.

“Then we could blame this whole fiasco on her, right?”

“Potentially – her being on my CCTV camera contradicts what she said in her interviews.” You start to continue, but Alexis finally speaks up, her eyes locked on yours from over the rim of the coffee cup.

“I don’t think recording phone calls without people knowing is legal, though. Just because she lied about something in the interview doesn’t mean anything – she can’t be traced back to anything unless she’s a fucking idiot. Legally, of course.” You start to deflate a bit, but Cinder jumps to your aid.

“Then why not upload it onto 2channel, then? It’s entirely anonymous – maybe not legal, but no doubt that’ll catch some traction with everything going on.” Cinder’s an astute girl when she wants to be, and she looks proud as she downs the rest of her milk. “If we did it behind a few proxies, then I doubt it’ll be able to be traced back to us.”

“In that case…why don’t I call her back? I can record her and try to fish for information while I’m at it.”

Alexis looks hesitant at this solution, but Cinder nods eagerly and gestures for you to shoo into the other room. Admittedly, you yourself aren’t too sure about all of what just happened, but at least it’s a start to gaining some ground on your end? You walk into the other room.

You never thought you’d see the day where you’d be talking to 0phelia willingly, but here you are – shrugging off your bloody pillowcase and dialing in the number she said to call her back at. You let out a grumbling sigh as you hear the muffled voices of Cinder and Alexis from the other room, sitting on your bed and trying not to aggravate your back too much. You caught the sight of it out of the corner of your eye when you walked in – a dark bruise peeking out from beneath your shirt’s collar across your neck. Looks like Cinder’s not the only one with a mark from that dickhead!

The line rings only once, and then you hear it connect. You decide to make the first move.

“Good morning.” You say simply, clicking on the recording software on your phone before you forget to. She takes a moment to respond, but her low and wispy voice greets you a few seconds later.

“Good morning, Nova…how are you?” You think her voice is cheery? It’s hard to tell with her sounding like she’s eternally doing an ASMR video. It’s a strange phenomenon - in real life she speaks like this, yet in the game she speaks so powerfully. It’s like two sides of the same coin.

“Oh, just fine. Sleeping off my bruises.” You remark casually, as if discussing the weather. You need to play it carefully here – you have no doubt in your mind that she knows about the incident, but anything further could tip her off to your ploy. You weren’t used to playing politics – Fletcher was the one who had to do that back in the day, negotiating things with companies and other players.

“I see…I heard about…what happened. I hope you’re…healing well.”

You genuinely can’t tell if that’s sarcasm or not.

You try to play it as polite as possible, letting anger seep into your tone is the last thing you want to do in this situation. It’s a bit hard though, if only due to everything that she had caused. Even if she wasn’t the one who sent Rock, it’s still her goddamn fault that he found you – this girl just upended your entire life just because you didn’t want to play a game. You truly hate her.

“Cutting to the chase…I see. As you know…I am a relatively popular streamer. I’m not sure how…one of my fans found your address. I apologize…some of them can be fanatic…when I get upset. Due to the events with Rock…it’s only logical that…some of his fans might be upset with you. I can use my status to…mitigate the situation.”

“And what’s the cost?”

“Speaking of what happened last night…is there any chance you might know what might have made him that angry? You’re involved in the community, and as you know, I’ve been out of it for a while now.”

“Hmm…from what I know of Rock…he’s always had a temper. He must have seen your address…did you do something…to set him off?” She questions, causing your brow to furrow.

“Not that I know of. He thought I had cheated against him and blamed the dissolving of his team on me, so he went off to find proof that I didn’t. Then he came back and…well, you know what happened.”

“Oh my…” She seems taken aback for a second, before her voice returns to it’s normal inflection. “That’s a truly terrible thing…it’s good he was stopped.”

Something is very off about that statement to you, namely because her voice never wavers. No matter what, even when she stormed off, she has always spoken clearly even with her particular voice. Could that be something to press, maybe?

This specialist must have something against me too since they directly set Rock against me knowing what he’s like.”

A pause from the other end of the line, you can practically hear her working the words through her mind as she thinks of a suitable response. When she opens her mouth, her voice is the same as always, yet she gives you the answer you need.

“If I were to answer that…I would expect something from you…in return. Perhaps…a bet?”

She sidesteps the question entirely, and that sends off a red flag in your head. You doubt she was expecting to be so forthright with your question, as the implications were extremely clear.

“I’d need to know what the bet was first.” You find yourself smirking a bit in victory, having scored one tiny victory in the face of her having several. That at least confirmed that she had some hand in it, at least in your mind.

“I see…perhaps we could meet and…talk it over?”

“You’ll have to forgive me for declining, I’m a bit…tentative about walking around right now. Couldn’t you tell me now?” That’s not a complete lie, your back and legs are making movement a bit of a chore. Whilst you wait for her to respond, you pull down the back of your collar and try to look into the mirror – looks like the bruise encompasses nearly your entire shoulder width. It doesn’t look pretty, that’s for certain.

She takes a few seconds to speak, and when she responds, you could swear she almost sounds a bit coy.

“I understand…but I’d really like to meet you. I’m such a big fan…and you sound interested…in my bet. How could I…pass up this opportunity…to meet my old idol?” Your eye twitches, and you realize that your insistence may have alerted her to something going on. She’s talking as if she’s never met you before, which she has no reason to do unless she’s suspicious – this has shifted into a game of cat and mouse, and it wouldn’t end until one of you hung up the phone. “Won’t you please…consider it?”

Her words are almost sickly sweet, and that unnerves you considering the way she’s been ever since she walked out of your arcade. You nervously run a hand through your hair, it feels tense all of a sudden.

“Are you…still there?”

Looks like you need to answer.

>Agree to meet up with her, perhaps you can force more information out of her in person.

“Yes, I am. Sorry, I was just mulling over something…” You trail off, hoping to lead her away from the current topic. You’d extracted what you’ve needed from that bit, even if it’s not entirely concrete – you know damn well she’s guilty of something involving Rock’s assault. Her hesitance and the fact that there were other people on the scene that came after Rock did. You almost feel like a Scooby Doo character with how many mysteries you’re solving. Fred ain’t got shit on you.

“And that…would be?” A bit of curiosity colors her normal monotone voice.

“You said you’d help me if I agree to a deal…could it be the thing you were referring to before our match started?” You had seen an example of this two days ago, but before a match there’s a lobby where you have the ability to converse with an opponent. In the eyes of an outsider without the CCTV footage, this comes off as an innocent remark about a pre-match discussion.

You’re surprised that she genuinely responds to you.

“Yes…I am. I suppose there’s…no use in playing coy. I want to…start a team with you. If you agree I will…do everything in my power…to stop people from bothering you.”

What sweet words from someone who took a fucking sledgehammer to your life! You wonder if you can pay Cinder to go and fuck her up in Warscape lobbies. If you recall correctly, 0phelia is level 216 and Cinder is level 231. She’d be fiiiiiine. God, you hate this girl.

>Why would she choose you, a cheater who left the league five years ago? You have nothing to offer her.
>Tell her that you’ve been to the hospital since last night, they said that playing VR would be severely harmful for the foreseeable future. [This will require a roll.]

“There’s just one thing that bothers me, though…when we talked about it, you said that I had skills that you needed to start a team. You cut the majority of my questions short.” You say, standing and pacing around your room as you continue. “For all you know, I could have been cheating my whole career. I haven’t played the game in five years, and therefore I don’t know anything about it other than the old stuff. Why do you want me of all people to start a team!?” Your frustration is starting to leak into your voice, so you take a deep breath and try to calm down.

0phelia is silent for a while, and you use the time to compose yourself. Losing your cool would do no good, especially when you’re on the precipice of getting some answers out of this crazy bitch. However, you hear a small giggle from her end, and your hands clench in anger.

“I see…was this the reason…you called? I apologize that my…suggestion upset you…in such a manner. Please allow me to…elaborate.” You hear her take a deep breath, but she cuts herself off with a sudden cough that hurts your ears a little. “When you played…you had a skillset that…not many had. You are an extremely…adaptable player.” She clears her throat. “Most players find an archetype that…fits their playstyle. You never were defined by…just one. I could tell how good you were…just by our match together. I’ve seen nearly every match…and your senses bordered the realm of…precognition. Cheats can only go…so far. Even if you don’t know the meta…you can be taught. I can teach you…how to get back to your former glory. Together, you can help me…forge a team that will topple Auxilia. I could choose…anyone else. But you…you’re a prodigy. And with that bracelet…you can’t betray us all again. So please…I’ll do anything…just take the deal, and I’ll do everything I can…to help you resume your quiet life.”

It takes a solid few seconds to process all of that information. A cold sensation is pooling in the pit of your stomach, and your hairs are standing on end. She dug up your location and ruined your life for this? This is more insane than you could have ever imagined – she’s doing all of this just…so she can create the best team in the league? What the fuck is WRONG with her!?

>Fuck this, hang up the phone. You need to upload that footage immediately, and you need to get ahold of the police. Drop that restraining order business on this bitch, homie.
>Keep her on the line, if you can strike while the iron is hot, you can keep the information flowing no matter how much fear is coursing through you.

[Man it’s the best fucking thing when the internet goes down for an hour or so. Sorry about the unexplained disappearance, I swear I’m not dead for three weeks again. Also sorry to the last anon, I had this finished by the time I saw your post!]

You take a deep breath and pull your collar away from your now sweaty body in an attempt to fan it. Hoo boy, shit just got dark all of a sudden. Because that’s an actually insane thing for someone to say, like for real. Even back in your peak popularity when you’d get all sorts of strange messages from fans, you can’t recall an occasion where you faced something as fucked up as this. You instantly have no doubt in your mind that she would do anything to get you on a team with her, and that’s why she said it – it doubled as an admission of truth, and a thinly veiled threat.

Like you said, this shit’s dark! You feel the need to lighten the mood.

“I…uh, I see.” You search for something to say, but nothing springs to mind – you struggle to move past the word slurry that she not only spat out, but attempted to drown your ass in.

“I apologize if…that was too strong. I have been…suppressing that for…quite some time.” She responds casually, as if there was nothing wrong with what she said. As if everything she had done up until this moment was absolved due to her incredibly fucked and irrational reasoning. How do people think like this? Is this what violent video games do to the Youth Of Society nowadays? You don’t know, but apparently you took too long to respond. “Is there any chance…you’ve been swayed…by my plight?”

“Yeah, uh…I don’t think that I’m gonna do that.” You can’t find it in yourself to keep up a charade right now – looking at things with a critical lens, you got exactly what you came for. You got a lead on the fact that 0phelia was involved in Rock’s assault, you’ve captured a pretty fucking creepy thing on voicemail, and you’ve reinforced the fact that you should look into purchasing a gun! What a productive mentally traumatic experience!

“I see…a shame. Then I suppose…our business is concluded…for the moment. Please contact me soon if you…have a change of heart.” You open your mouth to respond, but the line goes dead – she’s hung up.

Well. That was a thing that happened. You're not sure you feel like eating anymore.

>Go back into the kitchen with your newly acquired evidence and thousand-yard stare.
>Shoot off a text to 0phelia’s phone, you aren’t going to let up just because she hung up first!

Please give me feedback or thoughts on how you’re enjoying the story, it helps me improve and I really like seeing the reactions to what’s going on! Have a great night, anons.]

You stare at your phone incredulously, the amount of disbelief in your mind overcoming most logical process. Was this a real person? Do people act like this? You groan into your hands, dropping the phone onto your bedsheets and lying back to stare at your ceiling.

Well, you certainly have bullet-prof evidence that she’s not as nice as she seems. You’ve read that she’s prone to fits of rage at the end of her games, but you highly doubt her audience has seen this particular side of her – if you can’t find a way to pin her to the leaking of your address or Rock’s destruction of your work environment, you can at least deal out some hits to her reputation. Normally the idea of striking back like this would leave a bad taste in your mouth, but you’ve reached a point where you’re willing to do anything just to get some goddamn peace and order restored.

As you sit and stew in your emotions, you feel the fear and contemplation from earlier fade into genuine anger. This girl was willing to go to these lengths just for the sake of making a team that can beat Auxilia, huh? All because you happened to be good at a fucking video game once! You grit your teeth together, rolling over and burying your face into your pillow. Making sure you wouldn’t be super audible, you let out the fucking harshest scream you can muster – it goes on for a long time, actually.

You really needed that, actually. Sometimes taking the old school route of just yelling really helps, even if it makes you feel a bit silly afterwards!

Unfortunately, you must not have been as quiet as you hoped. You hear a slight knock at your door, almost hesitant.

“Hey, uh…you good, man? Want me to come in?” You hear Cinder’s voice come through your door. Oh right, the walls are super thin in your house. It doesn’t surprise you at all that they heard.

>Tell her to come in, you need someone to talk to right now.

On another note, and completely disregarding our MC's distaste for the game, I wonder how pissed 0phelia would be if we formed a team with Cinder instead and beat auxilia? And there's those others that left us messages too.

We really need to get all our material on 0phelia together. We might not be able to go to the police, but we could try for a restraining order.

OK, we need to do multiple things:
1)Go see the police (you'll see why)
2)Explain the ENTIRE situation with Rock and Ophelia
3)Give an "official" statement to the police so they...
4)can tell if Rock did it (which is pretty obvious) inwhich case you can sue Rock, after which you'll...
5) call your insurer to explain to them the situation and get reimbursed (assuming Alexis has set an insurance policy... and why wouldn't she have done so?)

Also, don't forget to edit the name of the arcade out of the Ophelia clip if you make it public so you don't dox yourself.

[Good morning! Bit of a late start today, been on the phone with my ISP about the internet going down all of a sudden. They say they’ll have a fix for it, but I doubt it because they’ve said that before. Oh well!]

You remove your head from the pillow and stare at the door. You briefly consider telling her to go away, or lying to avoid a long conversation, but you do realize that you need someone to talk to right now. If you don’t have someone to vent to, you’ll be stuck in a metaphorical dead-end loop of possibilities, and honestly that just sounds like a headache all on it’s own.

“Yeah, come in.” You sit up and fish your phone out from between your blankets, immediately swiping over to your recordings as she opens the door and walks in. She spends a little bit gazing around the room, apparently a bit weirded out that there wasn’t much in the way of decoration or personalization. Maybe you should get a potted plant?

“Man, you need to spruce this place up.” She walks over to the bed and sits, looking over your shoulder at your phone. “How’d the call go?”

You give her the most deadpan look in your arsenal, and she raises her hands in defense.

“I figured! Just checking. Lemme hear it.”

You replay the entire recording, and for the sake of expediency and being concise I’m not going to retype the entire fucking thing. When it ends, her face is a mixture of bewilderment and confusion.

“…is this what every pro has to go through? Like, fuck. I know there’s some weirdos on the scene, but this takes the cake. If everyone has to put up with this, I’m perfectly happy staying in my lane.” This does manage to illicit a chuckle out of you, and she reaches over to pat you on the shoulder firmly. “Sorry that you have to go through this shit, man. I wish I had more to say, but I’m not the greatest at this whole comforting deal – let’s go and finish breakfast.”

“But I don’t-“

She pulls you up from the bed at the expense of your back screaming in protest. Goddamn, this bruise is the bane of your existence and you’ve just woken up.

“If you sit around here and mope, I’m going to kick you in the head. Let’s do something about it rather than think, otherwise she wins!” She gets you in a headlock, even if the sudden motion causes her a little pain too. “We’re eating now, so shut up.”

This is the Cinder you know well – headstrong and not willing to sit on her hands when something needs to be done. You respect her for this more than she’ll ever know.

You take in a deep breath, and you call every bit of strength that you can muster in your body. You’re in CONTROL of your life, goddamnit! It’s up to YOU if you want to go eat! And you’re going to give her one hell of a struggle. You can overcome these odds thrust upon you, because obviously this is the most dangerous situation you’ve been fast with over the last few days. You have visions of grandeur, and you try to pull yourself back into the room.

Unfortunately, your body is sore as hell, and you’re not at full capacity. Even further, Cinder is stronger than you – she at least puts some effort into physical fitness, and you’re a spindly ass nerd. All this accomplishes is her looking down at you with confusion, and then a slow smirk spreading across her face.

“This again, dude?” You don’t respond, too busy trying to get out of her grip. She snickers and pulls you down into a headlock, although much more gently than usual – she’s being mindful of your shoulders, and the only one causing them to hurt is you by trying to get out of the hold.

Is this…your max ability? Can you not do better than this? Why aren’t you naturally SWOLE? These questions go unanswered, because Cinder drags your ass back into the living room. When Alexis sees, she gives a deep belly laugh. First a creepy call, and then abject humiliation. Par for the course, you guess!

It does do wonders in dispelling the tension in the room, though. Hearing the recording as you share it to Alexis isn’t as bad, as you’ve relived the conversation three times now. Rather than concern like Cinder showed, Alexis is furious – her mouth is running a mile a minute with insults for 0phelia, her arms swinging around like a conductor’s baton. Once you two manage to settle her down, you guys get talking about what the game plan is for today.

Here’s the options that you decide upon after going over all the information you have.

>Go down to the police station – Alexis has confirmed that the call recordings won’t be able to be submitted legally, but the CCTV footage and voicemail can be used to damn Rock and potentially put a lead or a restraining order out towards 0phelia.
>Take matters into your own hands – the call recordings are the real damning evidence of 0phelia’s actions. All you need to do is load up a few proxies and send them to an anonymous board online or through a burner account, you can make up a wild claim about how you got them as you do so.
>Visit the arcade and assess the damages – you don’t have insurance on your machines, but Alexis can use her insurance as the owner to help reimburse some of the mess. Additionally, you might be able to look into those other people who didn’t come with Rock.
>Try and get in touch with some of your old Warscape contacts – if they still play, they could potentially help out in making 0phelia’s life hell in-game, and you can also use them to get info on her that you aren’t privy to.

After the three of you finish breakfast and you store the vast number of leftovers in the refrigerator, Alexis says her goodbyes along with promising to get in contact with her insurance company. You thank her and send her off, turning around to find that Cinder has appropriated one of your hoodies due to forgetting hers at the arcade. You see no issue with this, and you go into your room to begin the process of copying all of the relevant files onto a flash drive to show the police.

“Maybe you should hide the computer? Just in case she followed us back here last night?” Cinder proposes, leaning against the wall while idly watching you.

“I…doubt that she would have been able to, considering how dark it was. Even with the moonlight, the route we took would have been hard to follow.” You respond, finishing the process and stowing the drive away in your pocket.

“True, but she managed to dig up the arcade. Like you said, who’s to say she’s left the area – she could have followed you at any time.”

Shit, she’s right. However, you do have incredibly functional alarms – if she tries to enter without a key, you’ll be notified immediately.

What do you do?

“H-Huh? What do you mean?”

“Well, I’ll just be smarter than her. I’ll send every file to my phone, yours, and also Alexis’s. I’ll also keep them stored on PlaceSpace as a contingency, and even if I can’t show the police the recordings, if she keeps barking up my doorstep I’ll use her tactic against her and release them.” You turn and face her, feeling your phone buzz against your leg. “I’ll be honest, I’m not too sure that what little I have right now can get me a restraining order. I’ve been thinking about it, and the footage of her plus the voicemail can make little more than an accusation if they don’t believe what I’m saying. All this will do evidence-wise is put the final nail in the coffin for Rock.”

“That’s fair, but at least it’s something, right?”

“It is something, yeah. And besides, I have leverage over her now – if she wants to be the best in Warscape, these will make sure that she has a hard time finding sponsors. They love to jump on this shit, a few players back in the day got pinched for much less.”

“What if she finds and leaks your home address, then?”

“That…we’ll cross that bridge if it comes to it.” You say this solemnly, standing and motioning for her to walk towards the door. You don’t even want to think about her going that far – the thought of her following you home is enough to set you on edge, but if she does that? You’re going to have to move. Just as you have leverage over her, she still has some over you.

This feels like some fucking Game of Thrones bullshit, you’ll be real. You exit your apartment.

The first thing you notice is the weather.

It’s a very nice day out – surprisingly so for this time of year. There’s hardly a cloud in the sky, and the sun shines proudly down across the landscape – it doesn’t nullify the chill entirely, but it’s enough where your hoodie is borderline unneeded. The street is more active than normal, and you’re entirely sure that it’s because of the weather. People are walking around and talking loudly, some children run excitedly as they chat about some new game coming out.

The second thing you notice is the person leaning on your railing.

Normally the steps leading up to your apartment are quite creaky, the metal rusted from constant wear and use. Alexis swears that she’ll get it fixed, but she’s often busy with other things – you can’t blame her, she’s a very busy girl. The sound of heavy steps normally would have been heard by you, but you must have either been too focused on duplicating the files or talking to Cinder. They passed you unnoticed.

And the third? Your blood has turned to permafrost.

After the initial shock, you suppose you can understand. Whether it was due to 0phelia getting money through donations and tournaments, or due to his own merits over the past five years – it really doesn’t shock you that someone would have enough money to pay his bail charge.

Well, that’s fine, you guess. It’s not like fate’s done you any favors as of yet. Maybe Cinder was right, when she spoke of 0phelia knowing where you live – how else would he be here, on your doorstep? This only confirms that she had something to do with it – but you knew that already, didn’t you?

Cinder spurs to action before you do, grabbing you by the back of your shirt and pulling you into your apartment. The man steps forward and stops the door from closing, forcing himself through your doorframe with an animalistic growl. You try and move away on your own, but you feel your leg muscles groan in protest.

Looks like Rock’s come back to finish the job. You hate your life.

You grit your teeth and force the fear down into the pit of your stomach – you won’t let him win on the mental battleground, either.

“Rock, please – you’ve already destroyed my arcade.” You attempt to make your voice as calm as possible, meeting his dark eyes and permanent scowl. He looks around your apartment with distaste rather than responding, walking further in and closing the door behind him. Well, there goes that avenue of exit! He isn’t swinging his fists at you or through your things at least, but it does little to calm your racing mind. “Just leave me alone.”

“I have repaid what you have done to me.” His deep voice rumbles as he leans against your door, his frame nearly eclipsing the damn thing. You have never seen a human as huge as this guy, and the crazy thing is he’s always been that way – if anything, he’s gotten bigger. You want to fucking scream at him that for the last time, you didn’t do anything wrong! He’s the one who ruined his team, and his goddamn bitch of a “specialist” is taking advantage of that to fuck with you!

What even is your life now? At least he’s not throwing you against shit again, you guess.

“Then why are you here?” Cinder asks, moving around you and standing in front with crossed arms and a glare. She’s a lot smaller than him, but she isn’t cowed by his gaze or size – you can guess that she’s probably just begging to knock the shit out of him at this point.

“To challenge you to a rematch.” He hardly gets done with the sentence before you speak up.

“Rock, I said no.” You can’t help yourself this time – won’t people just get a fucking clue? Why can’t some fucking respectful people come your way!?

“I am prepared to offer you compensation.”

[I return! Sorry for the wait. Got some more of my grades back, looks like a 3.7 for the semester.]

“I don’t want to hear it, Rock.” You say to him resolutely, reaching into your pocket and pulling out your phone. This is just a roadblock in you getting down to the police station – and hey, maybe you’ll be able to hitch a ride after this motherfucker gets brought down once again. You go to dial, and he begins speaking.

“Don’t do that.” His voice has a rough edge once more, looking at your phone and moving off of the door. He rolls his neck, and Cinder tenses – shit, is there going to be a fight after all? “If you call that number…you will regret it.”

“Oh? And why’s that?” You’ve already got half of the number dialed in, buddy.

“I am already going to prison for what I have done. If you dial the police once more…I will make sure to do much worse to you.” He cracks his knuckles, and wow that’s honestly pretty damn intimidating. You doubt that you could take him in a straight fight, and you have no idea how Cinder would do against this dense dickhead – although you could always run, you suppose. If he moves away from the door, that’s an opening!

>Press the call button, you’ll take that chance. [This will require a roll.]

You take your thumb away from the dial button, but you turn your phone around and hold it away from him, showing the screen off. He takes a moment to squint at it, and when he reads it he leans against the door once more.

“I won’t call if you answer my questions. Get me?” You say to him, and he nods slowly. Good, at least some form of understanding is happening – it seems he can be at least somewhat agreeable when things are going his way. Either that, or he understands exactly what position he’s in. Either works for you!

“How did you find my address?” Is the first thing you think of asking. Even if you have a damn good idea how he did, you hope that he’ll give it up just so it’s a 100% certainty. He looks as if he’s mulling over this information, and then he opens his mouth to respond.

“It was left for me.”

What the fuck does that mean?

“What the fuck does that mean?” Cinder echoes the same sentiment, her mouth twisting into a frown.

“When I was bailed out. The bail officer handed me a slip of paper that was left for me. It had this apartment’s address on it, along with your name.” Rock shrugs, making the door creak. He’s a bulky motherfucker, goddamn. “I do not know who left it.”

That wasn’t the answer you wanted to hear at all, but it’s progress. Let’s keep it up!

“Rock, say that again for me. Cinder’s going to record you saying it, and then I’m going to bring that up with the police later.” He slowly nods, and Cinder looks back at you with confusion as she draws out her phone. When she has it up, he repeats the words verbatim. New evidence acquired! Look at you, attempting to overthrow an asshole with the hammer of TRUTH and JUSTICE.

“As long as I don’t call the police, you will be calm, yes?”

“Yes.”

“Do you promise?” You realistically don’t have any reason to trust his word, but your arm is getting tired and you don’t like the fact that he keeps glancing at it. He’s a fast bugger, so he could probably make the space between you and crush the phone before Cinder ever gets a chance to stop him. This dude’s built like a brick shithouse.

“I will not harm you if you do not call that number. I did not come to start a fight.” Whilst his voice is as intimidating as always, you can detect a sliver of sincerity within. Whether or not it’s genuine is up in the air, but you’ll take it for what it’s worth for now if only to avoid a potential scuffle. You move out of the dial pad and put it back in your pocket.

“Can I still ask you questions?”

“As long as you hear out my proposition, you may ask anything you wish of me.” He responds. You’ll take advantage of that, yes you will!

“Why do you think I cheated? I don’t expect you to listen to me at this point,” You know he won’t, so you won’t even try to convince him. “But I would like to know your reasoning.”

“May I approach you?” He asks, stepping forward and causing Cinder to tense up. “I have the relevant footage on my phone.”

Your instinctual reaction is to say no, but he’s being oddly docile at the moment…who could say when that might end, though?

You’d really like to say no to this, but realistically you know that you couldn’t stop him if you tried. Would he even listen if you tell him to stay put? He’s an unpredictable man, and you like staying within your realm of predictability – even if that’s been tossed out the damn window at this point. You end up nodding, and he makes his way over, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone. It looks almost comically small in comparison to his large hand, but he navigates to his gallery without issue.

“Here is where.” He pulls up a twenty second clip from one of his teammates’ perspective – them approaching you and bringing a knife down on your neck, but you turning and deflecting it at the very last possible second. Another clip, a man hiding in the underbrush and observing the activity of your team. You walked almost entirely past, but then your head jerks in his direction, and your gun ends his perspective shortly afterwards. You know for a fact you didn’t cheat during this match, but then an ugly memory from a short while ago pops up in the back of your head.

>I’ve seen nearly every match…and your senses bordered the realm of…precognition.

…could this have been what 0phelia meant? Admittedly, you’ve never watched a match from the opponent’s perspective. You’re reminded of multiplayer games of the past, where people would claim that robots were playing rather than a human. Your movements looked nearly mechanical – the red eyes of your avatar burn into you as you watch.

“I…wasn’t…”

“Do not lie to me, Nova. Upon conferring with my friend, we both concluded that movement this concise is an impossibility unless you were assisted, as you were shown to be in the finals.”

You can’t help but cringe, that was exactly the type of cheat you had used in the final as well. Something that would improve your aim and reflexes – you got the chance to use it once, and then you were caught out. Wouldn’t they have done that here as well if it were true? You don’t feel like testing him.

“It makes sense why your match with 0phelia was so sloppy. With your cheats disabled, so are your abilities. Whilst I may have come in peace, I will stand by every bit of what I did to you. This is the price for the destruction of my team.”

You let out a long sigh.

“Then why are you here if you stand by what you did? He’s the one who made the bet along with his coach, that doesn’t fall on you regardless. Has he gotten the events mixed up in his head? You don’t know, and frankly, you don’t care.

“It isn’t enough.” He responds, taking the phone away and pocketing it. He moves away from you but does not sit, now leaning against your table. The fact that he’s closer to you now really doesn’t sit well in your stomach, especially with what he just said.

“Excuse me?” Wrecking your arcade wasn’t enough? Pitching your ass into an arcade machine isn’t enough? Stomping on Cinder, who isn’t even related to this business, wasn’t enough!? You almost wish you were the one who ruined his team. Fucking dickhead.

“I want to face you in a fair match.” He says, repeating his sentiment from earlier. You go to respond, but he holds up a finger to silence you. “I want to prove that I am better than you. That I was the rightful winner on that day, with no tricks on your end. I want to crush you into the dirt.”

“He hasn’t played in five years, Rock. That’s why his match wasn’t like it used to be.” Cinder pipes up in your defense, walking towards him and gazing coolly. “It wouldn’t be a fair fight, if only for that reason. Why would he play against you anyways, after all you did?” She hikes up her shirt, showing off the fucking nasty bruise stretching across her abdomen. He glances down at it briefly but looks back over at you with disinterest.

[Sorry for the wait! Had some good food and good company. Time to listen to this big oaf.]

Common sense is telling you to not even listen to whatever pitch he has in store, you don’t want to have to listen to him talk anymore. However, you still have questions to ask him – namely who the fuck reviewed that footage. You’re almost positive you know exactly who got in touch with him – everything is too coincidental and connected, and you want to put a pin to 0phelia’s plan. Your peace is forever tarnished now – even once you remove her from your life, people will still know where you are. More people like her and Rock might even show up! You have no way of reading the future, so might as well listen to what he has to say – you can always say no after the fact.

“What do you have to offer?” You say to him through gritted teeth, and Cinder’s head whips around so fast that her hair tickles your nose. You refuse to look at her, though – you aren’t looking at anything except Rock.

“If you play me, I will replace everything that I broke out of my own wallet. If you beat me, I will do whatever you tell me to until the time of my sentencing. I have nothing to lose from this deal, as I already know who will be victorious. I will not require anything from you when you lose, as the satisfaction of being proved as your better will be sweet enough. After all, it’s only what should have happened in the first place.” Your eye twitches at this, and you feel your rage start to come back in full force. This fucker’s really starting to piss you off – it’s like everything that’s happened over the past few days is culminating, a dark shroud looming over you. Who the fuck do these people think they are?

You’ve always hated trash-talkers. When they came for you after the finals, you understood and didn’t retaliate. Now? You know you’re in the right, and this dude’s in the wrong. A dark thought creeps into the back of your mind – what if you unleashed him on 0phelia after winning? You shake your head to dispel the thought. You wouldn’t go down that road.

Not yet, anyways.

“Now that you’ve heard it, I request an answer. What do you say, Nova?”

“…if I’m going to play you, I have my own terms.” You finally say, your fists clenching until your knuckles turn white. Cinder gasps, and you pay her no mind. Your mind is all business, because you have a small fucking Christmas list of terms.

“I understand.” Rock nods to you, his arms crossing.

Good, you’re glad he does – it’ll make this a whole lot easier.

“Number one - it's been five years, and I want to get back up to speed on the game. It only works out for you, since it's less time doing what I say before you're locked up. And if you really should have beaten me at my peak five years ago, a few days of practice won't change anything, right?" You don’t hold back the sneer in your voice, you’re pissed off that you’re doing this, but you aren’t going to let them push you around anymore. If they want to step up to the plate, you’ll knock them down just like you used to.

“This is fair.” His monotone is really pissing you off.

“Number two – we’re doing it publicly. For all I know, you’ll beat the shit out of me when I’m still plugged in because of your attitude problem. I don’t care where we do it, but it’s going to be around other people.” 0phelia tried to force you into the public eye and succeeded, so you’ll spit in her face and do it willingly. That, and you genuinely don’t want anything unfortunate to happen to you – based on his current mindset, you wouldn’t be surprised if he did try and rough you up upon losing.

“Hm. Okay.” For once you see his stony demeanor crack a bit – he wasn’t expecting you to suggest a public match. This makes you feel just a little bit satisfied.

“Number three – you will apologize to her. She’s done nothing wrong, and yet you dragged her into our business by stomping on her. You don’t get to hurt my friend and act like it doesn’t matter.” Cinder looks a bit shocked at this condition – what? Did she not expect you to make him apologize for what he did?

“I understand.”

You take in a deep breath. That was a lot of words at once, and you feel your anger slowly begin to ebb away.

Is there anything you’re forgetting?

>Add on more terms – you’re gonna milk this shit for all it’s worth. [Other.]

He's already gonna do whatever we say after the match, so I think we're all set.

“Then I agree to your terms, Rock. We’ll settle this shit once and for all.” You say resolutely, turning around and walking into the kitchen. As soon as you do, you hear the table knock against the counter as Rock turns to Cinder.

“I apologize for stomping on you when I did. During that point in time, I was consumed by my rage.” It’s not much of an apology – by Cinder’s snort, you can tell she agrees – but it’s what you told him to do. You exchange a few more things with Rock – guidelines for the match (you’ll be choosing from the competitive pool despite it being an unranked game), the location and time (Rock will be making an appointment at the local arena to see if an exhibition can be held in two days), and phone numbers. Rock tells you to send him the cost for everything that he busted, and you agree to do so. A few minutes later, he leaves your apartment without any further words or goodbyes.

The room is quiet before Cinder breaks it with a metaphorical warhammer.

“What the fuck are you thinking!?” She surges forward and clasps your hands, burning holes into you with her stare. “Are you for real? I thought you weren’t going to play again! Why did you give into him!?” So many questions fired at the rate of a machine-gun, Cinder can talk fast when she wants to. You try (and fail) to remove your hands from hers, so you opt to explain.

“0phelia influenced him, I’m sure of it. Once I beat him, he’ll do anything I say – he’ll be forced to answer every question I have, amongst other things. I’m confident that I’ll come out on top. Besides, I really want to get him to shut the fuck up and leave me alone.”

“But you haven’t played in five years!”

You chuckle at this, despite your tension.

“Well, looks like you’ll have to teach me, then.” You can’t help but smirk as you see her eyes widen. She nods rapidly, firing off that she’ll help you with everything – hell, she’s already throwing game jargon at you that you’ve never even heard of!

This wasn’t how you expected the day to go at all – it’s only been three days and you’ve already been thrusted back into the gauntlet. To be fair, this time you agreed to it – and you have no doubt that it’ll be a hard fight. Rock was an extremely good player during your prime, and he has the benefit of still being active in the scene. If anything, you have the disadvantage!

Even so…you’re confident you’ll come out on top. You’ve always been good at overcoming the odds.

[And with this, I’m archiving the thread because it’s gotten pretty long! I’m going to stop writing for the night as I’m working on a fun little thing for the next thread – I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed reading this, whether you hopped on now or at the beginning. It can be a little hard to follow your story posts especially in a crowded thread why not have some photos

Why not portraits of the characters, a summarization of what is currently happening, and maybe just some vr tech.
Gonna be running over the weekend?
>>
>>3529891
I'll try not to disappear, I have whole four months of nothing to do!

>>3529915
Hmm, I'll see if I can come up with something that will work. Not an artist whatsoever, but I'm sure I can cobble something together. And yes, I'll be running all weekend!

>Not an artist whatsoever,
You could always take pictures from another sources (live-action/cartoon/anime screenshots, fanarts, etc.) that matches closely to the character's appearance.
Thanks for the run, and see you next time OP.
