Is it always this warm out here? The sun bakes the sand and you with it, until somewhere along the wandering paths you end up more sweat-caked lost soul than human being.

But it was not always thus. In nooks and crannies of old places, buildings stick out of the sand. The bones of old peering, and we the little scavengers among them. Here, enough walls to keep out the wind and the winding paths of strangers meeting for a moment of respite. Strike a fire from the detritus, exchange glances followed by hands followed by words. Should a storm roll in, it may be the last rest to be had for a while.

When performing actions of a mundane nature, you may voluntarily take Fatigue to add dice. Careful not to overdo it. Spend an Alacrity later to recover 1 fatigue and catch your breath.

When performing actions of an extra-natural nature, you may voluntarily take Strain to add dice. Alas, unlike fatigue, to release Strain, take a 3AL to re-align and suffer the consequences. There might not be consequences. There might be. Pushing magical boundaries is problematic at the best of times.

Of course, friends have to go and get themselves killed. However, If Strainblooms have one minor boon, it is that they allow the world itself to fragment along predictable lines until the bloom itself cracks and dulls and the Hounds detect whatever presence or lack there-of that calls their dull-sharp senses.

And they eat the world, devouring memories, devouring friends. One can hold on to such things, giving up a little of one-self to remember those already lost, solidify before their final traces are washed away.

The earth trembles and the roots shift, little shudders in the dirt. This place of green hedges and deep moss is not as welcoming or safe as could be liked.

Perhaps somewhere else out there offers more shade. A foraging party of Houndmarked ran with their crystal spoils, leaving tracks. Wiop fair cleaves an archer in two with raging fury while Joker steps in and backs Wiop up, forcing away a slasher, preventing a gruelling blow. The Slasher raises their shield to BLOCK, and hollers - and behind us, on the periphery, we see the Houndmarked, coming to reclaim the area now that the Storm has blown through...

Spurius considers what Goresnouts are and what we know - it was left slumbering in the garden, watching over locked boxes on a pile of corpses and only wandered off when it woke from its slumber to feed. They are dangerous creatures that hunt Starsnakes for sport and are considered too recalcitrant to be trained by all but the most dedicated handlers. But they are not particularly brilliant animals, and are easily lured with the promise of meat or violence.

In one way they do overcome their species instinct towards habitual stupidity, they arrange grand mating displays of bones and wood and plants to lure in any willing partners, and these have often been considered by zoologists to be one of the few reedeeming features of an otherwise entirely unpleasant genus.

Oshinis rages against noxious insects, albeit we are uncertain if she means us or the buzzing swarm cloyingly clinging to their features. With one broad stroke of the sword a few of them are chopped from the air and the Houndbound surge forward, piling sword and pikes against Cormoran'ts hardened shell which deflects a few blows in the retreat.

Then a Chemicae Grenadier steps to - and a small sphere sails through the air, before exploding into voracious fire. We may need planning here, to defray and deflect their gruelling munitions before we scythed down by fragmentation blast and explosive fury.

A barricade of dirt and rock and the few shielding walls available is scruffed into being by Comorant as Wiop steps into the fray, holding off glancing blow and seeking thrust. Insects buzz and bite and swirl around Oshinis, who is is distracted from fierce commands and instead shouts for a cleansing fire. One chemicae avoids the grasping claws of the earth and throws a fuse-lit clay sphere that lights up the old sunproofed cloth with precise immolation, splatters of scorching flame and sparks leaping to bathe the Houndbound slashers and bikers as they advance and attack. A crossbow bolt rings out from behind the lines as their shooters begin to find their mark

A grasp of earth reaches out and shatters a dozen clay containers of unidentifiable materials that spread and pool along the ground like a shimmering film, clinging to the boots of the Houndbound as they advance.

Wiop is pushed off of the ledge by the collective effort of six arms heaving and Cormorants barrier takes a multitude of crossbow bolts as a vanguard to the onset of stabs and poking piker prods. Local airspace seems to have destabilised oddly, the flight of the projectiles erratic, bending, wavering. One of the crossbow shooters fair shoots himself.

The other unleash a flurry of shots on the sudden appearance of a hostile-looking stranger in their midst, backlit by curling flames.
