Just a week ago your life seemed normal. Or at least as normal as it could be with an abusive redneck father living in a trailer park. But then just in a few minutes your entire world changed.
Having gotten herself arrested for shoplifting your sister, Cam, overstepped a line and was about to have her hand mutilated by your dear father.
He asserted a mind-control power you never knew of before to make you leave, but you managed to break through it, begging the question for how long he was able to get away with it.
The reason for being able to break free must lie in your own power, where you are able to revert your body back to it’s original state. In laymen’s terms, self healing powers.
Merely defending against mind-control didn’t help in saving your sister and you had to resort to a shotgun instead and killed him. Thinking her to be out of the way due to the fact that she can turn freaking invisible, she got caught in the crossfire. But since you can also heal others with your powers you healed every bits that would have been lethal or inhibit the use of limbs.

The following events all happened rather quick.
You called 911, got to the hospital, lawyered up and pleaded to ‘acting in defence of a third party who would have had the right to use lethal force to defend themselves’ (that’s a mouthful), talked to a psychologist and someone from the church to arrange a funeral for your father, since everyone deserves at least that.

Your psychologist also helped you get in touch with the Millers, and after convincing David Miller to take you in as foster children, he, his wife Samantha and their other foster child Angela ‘Angie’ Jacoby come to pick you and Cam up.

“And this is Cam”, you gesture to her, but also gesture her to do something.

Fortunately she picks up on it and drops her pencil, raising her hand up in a semblance of a wave and even articulating a “Hi.”

“Hii~”, Samantha waves back at her, as does Angela.

“-my little sister”, you continue and look back to them, now walking backwards into the room to still keep eye contact with them, but making place for them. “She...”, the more you point out her selective muteness the less she’ll talk. “Ah- and there’s a shoes off policy in this uhm... safe space?” The name of this location was still weird.

Dr. Carter introduces herself formally to them as well and handshakes went all around until she speaks up about- “Shouldn’t Angela be in school right now?” which confirms to you that it was indeed Monday.

“She should, yes, I suppose.” Mr. Miller nods. “But what is the more important event? A single day of school, or welcoming new members to our family?” Dr. Carter gives an approving nod to that, seemingly impressed.

Mrs. Miller continues the train of thought for him. “We do value our kids education, of course. But what’s much more important than-” She gestures. “A single day in school? The person in our care has to get the feeling that they are the ones of importance.”

That’s incredibly cheesy...

You can’t help, but raise your guard towards them. Too nice to be true.

“And I get to skip a day of school.” Angela laughs and casually walks over to Cam, “Whatcha’ drawin’?”

“And it’s not your privilege in this case, Angela. It’s your responsibility, just like it was Marian’s responsibility to greet you back then.”

“Yes, and I’m engaging”, she points back and forth from her and Cam, “while also enjoying a day off school”, Angela unnecessarily, but honestly adds.

You can’t tell if she’s genuinely a honest person or just wants to tease him, or both. You would never have dared to say something like that to your dad. But the only response Mr. Miller gives was a disapproving stare.

“You said you were making tea?”, Mrs. Miller cuts through the small bit of tension and moves in between Mr. Miller and Angela, attempting to break the eye contact. (She didn’t actually succeed due to both parties being a few inches taller than her.)

“Yes, I did-”, you look towards the kitchen, but then quickly back to Cam who locks eyes with you while Angela seats herself on the table looking over Cam’s shoulder to her drawing.

If you were to go into the kitchen to make more tea from, you’d have to leave Cam alone, even if it would be just for a moment.

From what you can tell they are in good behavior mode, and while you know that nothing will happen, Cam’s eyes still have a pleading look to them. And you did agree that you have a sign for when she wants to talk to you alone. Only holding eye contact wasn’t a sign. But you know that she’s not very verbal, so she would lose the opportunity to signal you once she was out of view.

She could always come with.

“So- tea for everyone? The choices are limited to black, herbal and fruit, though. Cam, you want... too?”, you nod her into the kitchen, hoping that the meaning was not lost on her.

She nods, and quickly gets up from the table to join you.

“Herbal for me, dear”, Mrs. Miller pats your side slightly, “Thank you.”
“I’d like a black one”, Mr. Miller orders, but specifies- “short brewing time, please”
“I’m not really a tea-person, but- I don’t know...”, Angela felt compelled to pick something as well, “Fruit, I guess?”

“One of each, got it”, you nod again, “And I believe there are still formalities to take care of, so-” you gesture to Dr. Carter.

“Not even that much.” She gives a light shrug. “But yes, there will be formalities when officially being going into their care.”

Yes, you know all of this, you’ve been through the procedure with her a few times, but it feels so alien now that it was finally happening. Like it was someone else whom it happens to. Or like you sign yourself into slavery. One extreme to the next.

Once in the kitchen with Cam you give her a smile and ask: “They seem nice, don’t they?” To which she just gives you a mix between a nod and shrug. “But first things first. I gotta check if they have brain thingies like we do.”
>>
While putting the (still warm) water back on the flame you feel out into the living room.

Four people. One, you kinda-sorta recognize as Dr. Carter. No brain thingy on her, which you already know and her ankle was still radiating out signals of being hurt.

The next person also had no brain-thingy. Female, you already recognize. Mrs. Miller or Angela? You can’t tell. Checking a little bit further you recognize a few scrapes here and there that anyone gets in their daily life, but there’s also scar tissue and improperly healed broken bones.. Angela. You bite your lip. She had been a victim of abuse as well. Thankfully nothing radiates out signals of pain, so nothing was fresh.

“Angela’s clean,” you tell Cam. This time she gives you a determined nod.

Next- also female. And more to her than Angela. The generous amount of fatty tissue could only be Mrs. Miller. Nothing really out of the ordinary. Removed appendix, you’re quite sure, plenty of people have that. Or rather, not have that thing. Just like they don’t have powers.

“No powers on Mrs. Miller either.”

Again, Cam nods. She looks like she’s observing the most exciting event one could possibly attend to. So you can’t help but smile at her cuteness.

And to finish, Mr. Miller. You tap into him and- “What the-?”

Cam’s eyes widen. “What is it?!”, she asks quite loudly.

“Nothing. Shh.” you shush her while looking to the open door. “There’s no-” You shake your head, somewhat disturbed by what you found out and think of a way on how to say it. “Well, first off, no powers.” She looks off for a moment before returning her full attention to you, not letting you off with more of an explanation.

But how can you tell her that Mr. Miller lacks a pair of testicles? Or their significance on why not having them shocked you.

“It’s nothing to worry about, he just has an injury that- eh, it surprised me.” Which was an understatement. Your still clenched up a bit. “You know that I ‘feel’ injuries on others like I would have them, not completely like when I take it, but somewhat muted. Just- this time it was really jarring.”

Cam frowns and thinks for a small moment before inquiring: “Why? What’s he...?”. She then looks towards the door as well.

“It’s something personal”, you tell her and fetch tea bags. “Fruit for you too?”

She pouts at your change of topic, not wanting to let you get away with it, yet she still nods, “heal him.”

And you clench up again, “I- err... I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

You practically feel her glaring at you while you but the tea bag boxes away again. “She is limping too.”

“Mhm.” You have nothing to say, not really. You noticed, of course, but you didn’t do anything about it.

And you also know what’s about to happen. What she is going to say next, once she mustered up-

“Heal them.”

“It’s too risky, they’d find out abou-”

“Then what’s the point in being heroes?”

You can’t remember a time in which Cam actually interrupted you. She was quite angry, and due to some heavenly irony the kettle begins to whirr behind her as well.

>People aren't supposed to have these powers Cam. Just like superheroes have to protect their secret identity, we need to protect our normal lives. I haven't healed Dr. Carter because it's a minor sprain that will heal on its own. This one, um, I'll do it when I get a chance. At a time when he won't know it was me. Her wound will heal Cam, I already looked l, its nothing serious
And he has a missing part, I don't know if I can heal that, or if I won't be missing it too.

I have to learn more about our powers before I can be a real superhero
>>
“People aren't supposed to have these powers, Cam.” You sigh as you turn off the flame and pick the kettle up. “Superheroes- they protect their secret identities. Dr. Carter’s sprain is a minor thing, it’ll heal by itself. And Mr. Miller’s... uhm... I'll do it when I get a chance - A time when he wouldn’t guess it was me. But if I do it right after meeting him it'll be easy to figure out who's responsible, don’t you think? What changed in his life? Its you and me.”

Cam seems lost in thought again until you snap her out of it by handing her two cups of tea. “We have to protect ourselves in order to be able to protect others. And we have to learn first how to protect others, if we are not safe first, then we will never really be able to help others. And until the wheelchair mind-reader guy from the x-men comes to take us to a specialized school, we are on our own.”

“Professor X”, Cam clarifies before looking to her tea cup, “can control minds.”

Shit.

You don’t say anything while she picks up a single cup and walks out. You can’t really be mad at her for that little gesture. It was hot and technically she still has one arm in a sling, even if it doesn’t hurt anymore.

You are left with three cups and will have to go twice. You sigh again, as if that was the biggest of your problems. And didn’t Mr. Miller give you some brewing instructions? You forgot. But it wasn’t like you could do anything about it now, it’s only a bag of tea leaves in hot water. What you can do is leave them in and he will be able to decide himself when to take it out.

Another sigh escapes you as you make your way with two cups back into the living room. Herbal and Fruit. Ladies first, so-to-speak. If you can consider him a guy... Of course you can. Having become somewhat familiar with the smaller differences between men and women besides the obvious, stuff that’s not apparent to the naked eye, like shape and size of bones, prominently the skull and hips. In women there’s fatty tissue in the cheeks, hips and ass that men don’t have in the same way while men are have it disproportionated in the belly.

“So Cam, is that short for-”
“Cambridge.”
>>
You thought you were about to witness the routine of people trying to guess her name, but then Cam just up and says it outright.

“Cambridge?”, Angela repeats. “Man, that name is awesome.” She then gestures to Cam. “Now you get to ask me a question.” In return Cam points to a scratch on the back of Angela’s hand. “Cat, but don’t worry, Slippy’s a real sweetheart, only likes to play a little rough.”

It was nice to see someone actually holding a conversation with Cam that wasn’t you. You place the fruit tea in front of Angela, “Here you go. And to you too~”, and reach over the table to give Mrs. Miller her cup as well. “Didn’t have a third hand- be right back with your tea as well, sir”, you add while looking at Mr. Miller.

“Ah, No problem, and you don’t have to call me ‘sir’, Chris”, he responds with a wave of his hand, interrupting their ongoing conversation about now being serious that you and Cam are the last children they can take in.

“Sorry, I-” You hesitate. It was something that came automatically.

“David’s just fine”, he says, “only my wife gets to call me Dave.”

He’s nice. He even adds a bit of a joke to ease your tension. But all that you can think about is how he has no balls right now.

“D-David.” You bite your lip. “Anyway- black tea, coming right up.”

As you move back to the kitchen again you overhear Angela asking her next question. “So a cat’s responsible for my scritchies. What did you in?”

You look back to them. The question was very justified. Cam’s right hand is still in a bandage, and her left arm is in a sling. Even if she doesn’t need either anymore.

You stop for a moment and watch how Cam will react. They don’t yet know-

“A shotgun.”

God damnit.

“A what?”, Angela asks in disbelieve.
“fires not a bullet, fires little pellets”, Cam explains.

You don’t know if she didn’t understand what Angela meant or if she’s merely making fun of the question. Cam only gives an answer confidently if she knows what she’s talking about. And she knows what a shotgun is. She wouldn’t confidently make fun of someone... would she?

“Seriously?” Angela questions further, to which Cam just nods. Unsatisfied with the response she looks over to you for confirmation.

You only planned to intervene if Cam would freeze up, but she actually seemed fine. The problem was more the confidence with which she delivered it. Or rather how it simply didn’t seem to phase her.

You speak up. “That’s actually something I- uhm... kinda wanted to address before – you know – anything’s signed. The fact is that-”

>>
You take a deep breath and look to Dr. Carter for encouragement for a second – which she gives – you decide not to bail out to get his tea first and state plainly: “Cam did something Dad didn’t approve of, he- tried to cut of her fingers and I grabbed the shotgun by the door, trying to get him to back off, then he- he pretty much dared me and stabbed her hand. So I shot.”

Silence.

You look to Dr. Carter who, again, gives you an approving nod before turning to the Millers, but it was actually Mr. Miller who spoke up first. “I thought something of that kind.”

“Dave?”, Mrs. Miller hits his arm slightly.
“Well, he said he had to do what he had to do to get that court date”, he explains.
“Seriously?”, Angela repeats her question from earlier, getting more distraught.
“One of a few thoughts really...” He shrugs. “He could have been in some gang-related incident.”

They talk to one another a bit until Mrs. Miller addresses you, “Chris? Your father, did he-?” She did not finish her question, but the meaning was clear.

“He died”, you confirm, “but I’m not, like, a danger to anyone else.” Only that you shot Cam too. Meekly gesturing to her you add: “And, err... I thought Cam was out of the way. It’s... complicated.”

Mr. Miller was stroking one side of his mustache in thought. Mrs. Miller still seems to process your words, her mouth slightly agape. But this time it was Angela who gave her first comment: “wicked”, with a sense of awe in her voice.
>>
“Angela!”, Mr. Miller shouts out. Clearly if she would have been close enough to her she would have given her a slight rebuking hit as well. “Apologize.”

“Apologize?”, she repeats. “What for? I just think it’s-”
“Another persons peril is not your entertainment, young lady!”

Mr. Miller stands up and nods to the kitchen. “You still owe me a cup of tea.”

“O-of course”, you take a step back and wait for him to catch up to you before heading into the kitchen with him.

“Relax”, was the first word he spoke once you were alone with him. “I just wanted to spare the fairer sex of my family the-” He licks his lips and probably thinks of what he wanted to say. “- topic”, he finishes. “I was barely 18, so not much older than yourself, when I was drafted for Korea.”

You don’t exactly see where he’s going with this... Is he going to tell you some war story of his?

“What I’m meaning to say is- I’m not a psychologist, but I’ve seen and done things too. Things I’m not so proud of, but still in order to safe a brother in arms.” He pats your back. “There’s this notion about men not talking about their feelings, but keeping them to yourself won’t do anyone any good. Now, I know you don’t know me yet, but if there’s some stuff you want to talk about without having to fear someone might put you away, you can talk to me.”

“There is actually something-” You hesitate for a moment still. “I shot twice”, you admit, “like, when he had already let go of Cam and she was by me bleeding out- I shot again to- to finish him off.” You haven’t told it like that to Dr. Carter. Not really. “It’s not like I made a conscious thought of knowing that he’d make our lives a living hell after that or anything. I just did it.” You feel like throwing up again.

While you are not facing him you can still see him nod out of the corner of your eyes. “Too soon for a hug, I feel. So you know what you need? Something good in your belly. And I’m not just talking about off-brand tea.”

He probably guessed right that you’re sick at the thought, but the last thing you want to do right now is eat something on top of it.

“It’ll be a little while until I could cook for you- while we would be back home in time for lunch. What do you say we have our first family outing to get brunch somewhere nice?”

Mr. Miller’s clearly trying to bond with you, so why should you deny him? He seems excited about the prospect.

“Sure”, you confirm, “I guess.” You never had brunch, and even iv you don’t feel like eating, Cam might be hungry. “I never had brunch, I don’t even know what it is. Sure, like a breakfast-lunch mix, but what actually is brunch?”

“Well, there you have the simple answer. Hmm... If I teach things like that I like to get in a bit of history with it, since it gives a deeper understanding of the subject matter. The story cut short is that British upper class families gave their servants the weekends partially off, so those servants arranged a buffet in the morning that has a range of dishes serving as both breakfast and lunch. Nowadays it’s most commonly also a weekend tradition for people who sleep in on the weekends and, again, combine the two meals into one. Especially for bachelors who have a more loose day rhythm. This also contributes to the food choice often having high fat contents. Greasy foods. Not that you should already know that, but it’s to soak up the alcohol and help with a hangover. But, then again, it’s also often eaten with some lighter alcohols.”

You attentively listen, but you still don’t know what’s going to be served. “Sooo...?”

“My bad,” he gives a small smile and nod, “pancakes, omelets, other egg dishes, bread with all kinds of garnish, salmon, cream cheese-”

“So, mostly just a fancier breakfast.”

“Yeah,” He shrugs and picks up his cup of tea. “Basically.” Then he nods back into the living room door. “You good to go?”

“I-”, you stop him as he already began to move. “Yes- I mean, no. Not yet. I- Are you just okay with that? I mean, doesn’t... /it/ bother you?”

He looks at you for a moment before nodding. “Of course it bothers me. It bothers me what you had to do, and it bothers me that it’ll forever be with you.” The places the cup down again. “And it bothers me seeing someone having to live with it.” He looks you straight in the eyes. “Okay, be honest with me. “No”, you say almost immediately. But you’d probably do it again if you had to. Not that you’d want to... You take a breath. “I’ll protect Cam. If I could do it again I’d not hit her this time.”

“And?”, Mr. Miller urges you to continue, and it was clear what he meant.

“If I would do it again to protect her again, is that what you want to hear?”, you ask. “I don’t know. The situation was... I don’t ever want to be in that situation again. Having to decide over a- over a life.”

You barely noticed your breathing getting ragged when he puts his hand on your shoulder. “Come on, let it out.” And before you knew it you were crying for whatever goddamn reason. Crying on some goddamn stranger without balls, just because he offered his goddamn shoulder to cry yourself out on.

You’re not sad. Sadness is the last thing you feel. You’re angry, and confused, but mostly angry.

Ugh, Qm I love your quest I really do but why are we still in the process of getting out the hospital and into the outside world? I thought when we first started, the hospital was going to be like a semi-tutorial or something but we ended up in it for so long, why is that? why couldn't we get a time skip of some sort and got the fuck out there sooner? I don't get it I really don't I feel we should've been done with this 'arc' at like thread 4. maybe we anons spent too much time doing trivial shit, idk man. I'm sorry but I'm getting a bit impatient.

nah, it's because I still try to figure out how to balance QMing with private life and where I should make meaningful decisions vs. just writing over trivial things.
I'm still used to writing normally.
AMD somehow I do feel it's important for you to have the start with these characters now to care about them, at least a little (which do excuse the earlier slowness)

You are angry, but not at her. While part of you wants to lash out, it was only a small part. Runner up was quipping at her. Something like continuing something about that documentary she’s doing, but you couldn’t think of anything, so you were just glaring at her.

“Angela”, Mr. Miller says her name with some force, mostly disapproval.
“I ruined the moment, didn’t I?”
“That- you did”, he confirms, “yes.”

You had already let go of him and wipe away your tears in your sleeve before going for one of the napkins in the kitchen. “Just, err... male bonding with the alpha”, you bring out eventually.

Since you weren’t exactly facing them you don’t see what reaction your words have on them, only hear that Mr. Miller then continued with: “We’ll be going out for brunch, we won’t drive home immediately.”

“Yes,” she almost strikes a sort of victory pose, but still holds the camcorder with both hands, “you don’t get to be trapped in a hot car with us for 3 hours so soon after all.”
“We have A/C, don’t worry.”
“Nothing like having others sweat be blown into your face,” she continues her faux-rant. “Anyways, you were, like, in the middle of something, I- yeah, well, I’ll be going now.” With that she leaves the kitchen again.

You exchange looks with Mr. Miller and he shrugs. “The moment is gone, but we still had it.” He pats your back and takes off, picking up his tea again. “Or is there still something else?”

The usual questions where checked off on your ride from the safe place to some restaurant and then to their place.

David – and you feel more comfortable calling him by his first name now – is a cook for a fancy restaurant. That may be the reason why Mrs. Miller is more... generously distributed. Due to his age, however, he already dialled down the hours he works and now only has the evening shift three days a week. And Samantha had been an accountant for a mid-sized company, the last line of defence checking if anyone else was making any mistakes, lots of responsibility. Short story even shorter, they are loaded. Not ‘rich’-rich, but certainly a step up to you from living in a trailer park.

And since they are cheap and don’t spend their money on things they don’t need, everything they do need is easily available. However, this doesn’t mean that you will get an allowance without doing household chores. Which is, again, a step up from doing household chores while starving yourself to afford a book. That wasn’t a story you shared with them though.

Angela didn’t easily open up, or at least the hobbies she named were as generic as they come, going out with friends and listening to music. An era where you didn’t find lots of things in common since she likes music from recent years.

You really learn more about Marian than about Angela. Marian is the other girl they quote-unquote have in their care. She’s in college right now, art school, and she’s already easily able to keep herself easily afloat selling her paintings. Freaking rich kids.

She even took on Miller as her family name despite not being adopted by them. Which, again, only had been some technicallity about her biological parents still being alive and all. That was also something you did not learn about Angela.

“But what about you guys, we know bits of your past, but what about your future. College, job? What do you want to be when you’re all grown up?”

“Well,” you let out a laugh with little humor behind it, “hopefully not jail. No, I- Well, since like... just then I thought I’d help people. Heal them, I mean. So, doctor, maybe, I dunno. It’s gonna be hard with my current grades.”

“Doctor, eh?”, David repeats, “Mighty ambitious of you. If you’re sure it’s what you want to do we’ll support you.”

Yeah, you’re not sure of it. You have an innate gift now and wouldn’t need to actually study medicine. It seems like it would be sunk cost. What you want is to know basic anatomy better, to be able to tell whats what when you feel around in someone’s body.

“Cam, what about you?” Samantha asks, “what would you like to do when you grow up?”

Hmm... You don’t know the answer to that either and look to Cam to see what – if at all – she will answer. And hopefully she doesn’t say superhero.

A little time passes before Cam does speak up. “Buildings”, she says.

“Buildings, my dear?”, Samantha tries to dig deeper. “Would you like to be an architect?”

Cam nods, confirming it.

“Huh”, you voice your surprise. Well, it wasn’t exactly surprise. Anything would have surprised you. It’s more like... she has a dream. That’s kinda cute. So you give her a warm smile. “That’s interesting, did that documentary back then inspire you?” Again, she nods. “That’s a way cooler job than doctor. A doctor only gets to fix what’s broken, you can create things.”

This made her smile. Genuinely. Something rather rare for her. Unfortunately it fades unnaturally quick, like she thought of something else to ruin her mood again. If that were the case, she certainly doesn’t voice it, nor gives you much of a hint about what’s on her mind.

The Millers also agree that it was an interesting profession. Creativity, but used in a very practical way.
>>
The topic then shifts back to you. “Chris, I know what you said earlier was a joke, but you should not be so pessimist. From what the police officer and Dr. Carter told us you have excellent chances, don’t you?”

“So I’m told”, you say with a shrug, not really knowing what else you can answer.

“We’ve been at court before. Twice, with Martin and Isabelle. While they were not on trial – their mother was – we still have some knowledge of the proceedings. And while it was not a-”, he clears his throat, “murder charge, I don’t think it will be all that different. Witness statements, evidence and how it’s presented, and stuff like that. Might be useful to know a laymen's standpoint as well, right?”

“Yeah. I guess. Sure.” First thought was that it’s weird if you were to hear from someone who’s not in the field since you already heard from Dr. Carter, various members of the police, and your lawyer. But they might tunnel vision on other stuff. “Yes, please.”

David slightly chuckles, but doesn’t address your awkward answer. “Ok, first of, respect the court, respect the jury, respect the janitor if you meet him in the hall.” He counts off. “Eyes everywhere and you want to make an as good impression as you can. So I also suggest you play with Cammy when you have the chance. Humanizes you, makes you seem more innocently childish while showing how much you care for and get along with her even through the age gap.”

You nod while he gives these tips.

“But, I got distracted from the first point. Respect the court and its proceedings. That means dress the part- Do you have a suit?”

You don’t.

>“No, but I kinda thought wearing a suit seemed... psychopatic. I mean, we do all the things to manipulate people, it doesn’t feel right.”
>“No, should we still get one in three days?”

You frown. “No, I don’t have one. Aren’t I a little too young for a suit?”

“Nonsense. You’re sixteen, you’ll need one for events. School dances, prom. This stuff will come up sooner than you think. And it’s easy for us men, we can wear the same outfit to all events, dances, weddings, funerals, and also court.”

Funerals... That throws out your thought whether or not you really need a suit.

“That is not to say that you shouldn’t specialize your gear, but a starter suit can serve any purpose”, he continues.

“I never wore a suit,” you tell him, “I don’t know if I would feel comfortable in one, and shouldn’t I be comfortable when I have to – you know – tell that story in front of a crowd?”

“That’s why a suit should be fitted”, he agrees. “Ever worn something fitted? Eh, probably not. But the reason you think you’d feel uncomfortable in one is the same as everyone else- They only feel uncomfortable if the suit doesn’t fit them. As any clothes. Now, we absolutely don’t have the time to have one tailored for you, but we might be able to get one fitted. That’s buying one of the rack and just have it fitted much cheaper and faster too. But three days is one hell of a deadline.”

“Then is it really necessary to have it fitted?”, you ask, thinking about the cost

“Yes, absolu- well, yes”, he changes his mind a little. “It doesn’t have to be fitted in three days, we can also have it fitted later for other events. But I say we do it anyway, even if the express service will be a little more expensive.”

>“I think so too.” (Don’t mention who pays for it)

“I’ll pay it”, you tell them as he brings up the increasing price tag. So far nothing in your head has triggered the ‘We don’t take hand outs’ control, so you want to get ahead of it... by simply following it to a tee. You sigh. Just because it’s mind-controlled into you, doesn’t mean it’s not a thing you should live by. But you don’t even know if you have the money. “I mean, I can’t right now, but I’ll definitely pay you back.”

“You know it hasn’t been two hours since we signed that we will take care of your needs,” Samantha chimes in. “Clothing is one of them.”

You bite your lip. “Well... yeah, but a fitted suit is more luxury than anything else. I don’t have to have it, do I?”

“Okay. Compromise”, David speaks up again. “We’ll pay for a nice suit, and you will pay for the fitting and express fee. Deal?”

We don’t take hand-outs. There we go.

You look to Cam to see if it reacted for her as well, but you couldn’t guess if it was the case. She does look at you with... fervour. Like she’s really looking to see what you’ll answer. You can only guess that she knows the conundrum in your head.

“I don’t know...”, you eventually say.

“Hmm... Let’s sweeten the deal for you. If you lose your trial, you’ll have to pay all of it back.”
“Dave!”, Samantha rebukes him and lightly hits his arm.

The skyline of Tall Oaks draws near in the distance, making you feel rather small. Of course, you have seen big cities in movies and such, but you have never actually been in one. And Tall Oaks was in the top 50 most populated cities of America.

A few minutes pass with you just looking on in awe before you become aware of the interior of the car again. Angela was looking at you with amusement and you quickly avoid eye contact.

Cam, too, tries to get a good look at it, leaning down and forward to look through the front window of the car. Her being in the middle seat and not having her own window otherwise makes such a thing necessary. You personally think such a pose is awkward, and wouldn’t have done it in front of new people like that.

“Impressive, isn’t it?”, Angela’s voice carries a mocking tone. “Yeah, but it’ll eat you alive.” She leans over Cam to whisper slightly. “That city is one cold hearted bitch with a 14-inch strap-“

“An-ge-la!”, Samantha intonate every syllable.

The accused flinches. Her expression tells you that she really didn’t expect Samantha to overhear her.

“Young lady...” Samantha takes a breath. “Your responsibility for the day was to give Cambridge and Christopher a welcoming feeling.”
“I just made a-”
“No! You had one thing to do. Don’t tell dirty jokes, watch your language, and be nice.”
“Those are three-”
“No, now is not the time for your quips!”
“I-”, Angela begins, but shuts herself up under Samantha’s gaze.
A few seconds pass before Samantha continues. “You will give your TV to Cam.”
“Wha- For how long?”
“Until such a time you can afford a new one for yourself.”
Angela’s mouth stands agape, but she thinks better than to refute the punishment.

You had remained silent through the altercation.

She has her own TV in her room? And it’s going to Cam’s room, which would mean that there would already be one in the room designated to you... right? You didn’t expect that. And as far as punishments go, simply striking a luxury privilege like that was very mild compared to what you were used to. And figuring from what you guess from Angela’s scars the same would go for her.

But maybe that was a thing of the far past and she was accustomed to something much lighter now. Be that as it may, you didn’t actually feel very bothered by what she said (You don’t even know what Samantha interrupted her on), and you don’t want her to associate the bad feeling from the punishment with you to start out on a bad note with her.

That took you some time to come to terms inside your head with how you feel about it.

“I don’t think- I- Is that necessary?”, you ask.

“Christopher, dear”, Samantha smiles to you, “you have a kind heart, but yes, I’m afraid so. And I’m sorry to the both of you -” She nods to Cam as well. “- that you have to experience this so early, but punishments for bad behavior have to be carried out. But those punishments usually are just revoking a privilege.”

Your cheek twitches a little. She told you pretty much what you already thought, so it barely had an impact on you.

“You don’t have to be afraid, Chris,” she says in response to your expression, having misjudged it. “We don’t deal out punishments very often.”
“She just tried to make a joke”, you still defend her.
“A very inappropriate one, with a much too young audience.”

Angela didn’t just said ‘bitch’, did she? You hadn’t quite catch the last part though. The 14 inch something.

Well, you have to take it for what it is.

“Thanks for the attempt,” Angela says.
“Don’t worry about it”, you wave it off and look out the window again.

You were almost in the heart of the city, past the suburbs at least, soon to be swallowed by the skyscrapers.

“Uhm, where exactly do you live?”, you ask.

“Heh, you’ll see”, David notes ominously.
>>
Your new home is in a high rise apartment building with it’s own parking lot underneath the building and two elevators. The floors the elevator serves are the two underground parking decks, the ground floor and then every even number, for some reason. The button Angela presses when you all step in was for the eight.

Everything was nice. Not fancy, but very clean. The elevator had a large mirror wall that had little to no smear marks and a sort of black board with random notices, and also a calendar for when recycling is due. This week is aluminum.

When you step out into the hallway the same image was upheld. While there was no natural light, it still felt comfortable, with live potted plants at regular intervals between the few doors. From the elevators you go left and stop on the second door on the right side. ‘Miller’, said a name tag by the doorbell.

“Home sweet home”, David opens the door for you and steps aside for you and Cam to enter first.

Yeah... they are filthy rich. You know the reason now why only every second floor has had a button on the elevator. Their apartment – if you can even call it one – had two floors.

After a small entrance area with enough space for a few people to take a seat and take of their shoes comfortable before storing away said shoes and coats in appropriate furniture, the room opens up to an even larger room.

To the left was a large black leather couch, glass living room table, a large flat screen TV. To the right, after a small separating bar – some nightstand-type furniture – the dining area. Again, a large table with 6 chairs and some flowers in a vase on top. Even further right there was a kitchen, all still in the same large room with only small separating semi-wall things. And behind the living room area it opens out into a balcony.

You don’t even know where to rest your eyes on. Seeing their home you suddenly realize how sterile such large apartments look in movies and TV-shows. This one was lived in. Nothing was really new, everything has a bit of wear on it.

“Wow...”, you say as you walk into in, taking it all in.
“Yeah, that was also my first reaction,” Angela giggles.
“Chris. Shoes off, please.”
“Oh- ah, sorry, I-”

You look down and see that you’re dragging in dirt. Your shoes are by far the most filthy thing in here. You feel like you’re defiling something.

“Angie will show you your rooms”, David asks her before looking to you again. “Get a feel for the place, but don’t take too long. We still need to get that fitting order out ASAP.”

“S-sure.” You nod and look to Angela.

What will you talk with Angela about, now that you have the chance and alone time?

Angela nods you to follow her and walks on ahead. A gesture you repeat to Cam. So you pick up your and Cam’s cases again and walk after.

Being too distracted by the lower floor, you barely noticed the stairs going to the second floor- or the ninth floor rather. While you wanted to look around you are distracted by a new sight.

Attractive girl in skinny jeans walking up the stairs right in front of you. And you can’t help but not see her as such right now. AND you realize that you haven’t addressed some sort of primal urge these past few days.

This is not good. Really not good. You need to distract yourself.

“So, uhm- how long have you been with the Millers, Angela?”
“Hmmm... ‘bout two and a half years”, she answers. “And AJ, or Angie”, she adds. “Most go with AJ. But don’t call me Angela.”

>Go with AJ.
>Go with Angie.

She turns around at the top of the stairs, but you already have your case protectively, albeit awkwardly in front of you. This was not working. Think of something bad.

“So [AJ/Angie], you know our sob story-”
“Oh shit, that’s right, I almost forgot you, like, uhm... well, yeah. Uhm- This is not a quid pro quo question, is it?”
What? “I’m sorry, quid pro quo?”
“Err... like... you show me yours I show you mine.”
“Oh-” You are currently actively trying not to show her yours, but you get what she means. “Kinda? Why? You don’t want to talk about it?”

She clicks with her tongue and doesn’t respond, merely leading you and Cam down the hall. Apparently she does not want to talk about it. Go figure.

“You get Marian’s room and will share a bathroom with Sam and David. Cammy, bathroom, me.” She points to each of the rooms, which were mirrored to either side, with either the hall or bathroom separating them.

You will not share a bathroom with Cam. To make that possible you would have to convince Angela to trade rooms with you.

>Ask her about it
>Let it be. It’s not that important.

“Alright. I’m fresh out of other immediate questions.” Well, you still want to ask her how the Millers are again, but Cam was still next to you, and you wouldn’t want to worry her if the answer would be negative. “You got any for us?

Looking back to Angie. “Do you always have to be so blunt?”
“Yeah, actually, I do have to”, she answers.
“I understand, it’s like some primal urge you can’t help, but to- well, dick around.”
She opens her mouth slightly and thinks for a moment, before tilting her head and smiling. “Got me on that one.”
“So, hey, uhm... Can we change rooms?”

Angie shrugs. “I guess.”

>“You want me to be your servant for some time or something?”
>Yield.

Do you have any old wounds? I bet you do if you are in a place like this, I know a trick to make them less visible, I could give it a try if you want.

We can make up something and use some plaster while we heal it.

I'd be cool with this too. A general favor she can call in.
>>
>>3596986
Like i said here >>3594991
we try the favor and some other things but if nothing works we show her the "family treatment" to heal old scars disguised as something else.

We could metion that Cam has night problems ( the whole turning invisible thing) and we woulf like to stay near

Frankly, this is retarded. Lets not go so obvious about our powers.

>I can take one of the house shores you don't like?
This I can get behind. It is not such a huge favor she would do us.

>>3594917
how about we leave the room when she wants to watch tv? that way she won't have to deal with our dashing charm lowering her defences like she said, we don't watch tv anyway
>>
You were tempted to offer to heal Angie’s scars, but you couldn’t come up with a proper explanation. Neither how you’d heal them nor how you even know of them.

“Okay,” You shrug. “Since my dashing charm would lower your defences too much if we’re in the same room, how about you get TV-rights and I leave the room?”

“Hey, that’s not what I said!”
“It’s what you implied”, you say. She glares at you but doesn’t respond before you could continue. “Favour coupon then?”

Her eyebrow twitch slightly before agreeing, “Fine. I take it. But!” She raises a finger and points at you, “You” and pokes you square in the chest. “carry all my stuff over.”

“Deal.” You nod. “Pleasure doing business with you.”

“Yeah,” she shrugs, “I wanted Marian’s room anyway, but we kept it for her and I never ended up moving.”

“Then why- no, never mind.” You shake your head.

You have barely put your cases into Cam’s room when you hear David call out for you. “Chris, what’s taking so long?”

“Coming!”, you call back

You haven’t had the chance to look at any of the rooms properly, but in the end it doesn’t really matter.

Neither Angie nor Cam bother with moving in/out and follow you back downstairs.

“I’ll come with”, Angie announces.

but in an obviously jokingly manner, not in an abrasive ironic manner

all in all she is an ok step sis so far, not giving us a hard time for the boner and trading rooms with just minimal quip trading
>>
You look back over your shoulder to Angie. “You do realize that they don’t sell tiny biker jackets in men’s outfitter stores, right?”

Before she could think of a retort David chuckles. “One day you find your match, Angie.” He turns to you. “Don’t let her give you a hard time, you hear?”

“Hey, it was his quip right now”, she says. “I was on the defensive here. But let’s ask Chris here. I have not been giving you a hard-on, have I?”

Pops, I've been here since thread 1.

It's hot over there as well? Keep cool and sleep in a bath of ice QM.

“Not really.” You shrug. “It’s all been in good fun. So far I’m just drinking it all in.”

David looks inquisitively between you two, knowing something was going on, but couldn’t exactly place what it was. “Well, at least it seems you two are getting along fine. But why do you want to come along, Angie?”

“Just to hitch a ride to the mall.”
“We’re not going to-”
“You think they will let him into their store like this?”, she asks, gesturing vaguely at you“You’ve seen his shoes too, right? He needs a complete overhaul of his wardrobe. Cammy too, actually.”
“Hey!”
“No, the little fashion style you have is completely gone by how worn down everything is.”
“And what, I’m supposed to take fashion advice from little miss biker jacket?”

“I’m edgy on purpose, you’re a mistake, and she-” Angie nods to Cam, “she’s a little too young to know. David, you’ve got to let me help them.”

David shakes his head and looks to you, non-verbally laying the decision on you.

>No, you’re not going to let Angie keep power over you.
>Let Angie come along, but you’re going to pick what you want/what Cam wants.
>Let Angie come along, also take her advice, but Cam has enough troubles, she should choose for herself.
>Of course Angie can help, but only for Cam, since you know nothing about women’s fashion.
>Of course Angie can help, this will be a learning experience for you too.
