Days later, the Captain returns. Comes and goes as the wind, that one. A pale, soft-spoken clerk follows. She is clearly nervous to be where she is, but has the small, bright orange badge of a Vanadian inspector attached to her uniform. When you catch her looking about herself with wild eyes, she runs her fingers across that same badge and draws some measure of comfort from its distant authority.

The Company discussed the ciphered correspondence recovered from the ruins of the Keep. In the Seraikai plains, a manor belongs to chemicae that refers to himself as Amwise. Either a name or a joke, these things are difficult to tell with certain minds given over to tinkering with the fundamentals of reality. His name/title is mentioned in the correspondence. The inspector provides a warrant. When you scan it you notice that the signature and the stylised Inspectorate sigil are inked with pinpoint elegance even if the warrant itself is shaky on the finer calligraphy. Nervous one, this clerk.

Go to the Ostroskon Manor. Find Amwise Teller. Serve the Warrant and inquire into the nature of the crime we have seen in the Keep. A serial killer stalks the land. Someone is paying mercenaries to kidnap people for some purpose. There will be a reckoning.

Effect range, Lanterns. Positive and negative. You are welcome to try to do things that are maddeningly self-destructive in the hope that it may work out, but you appear to have made a colossal mis-step in your assumptions here.

Perhaps you should consider the tried and true methods of:

trying to ask to understand that which you do not know how works?
Applying measure of judicious caution when dealing with paranormal forces.
Operating on the principle of "There's is probably some mechanism in place to prevent me from hitting infinity".

As it is, Karna is now an unmoving statue and Worst has an 81% chance NOT to have filled their own lungs with corrosive fluids by the end of this sentence.

Amwise Teller - if that is his real name - is a renowned Bonded Chemicae. He did pioneering work on sigilcraft linked motive systems and loyalty encoding. He designed the equipment used in the state of the art Isfelt neurological rehabilitation unit. His designs are often imitated or copied in chapbooks for enthusiasts.

His premier focus appears to be on the integration and operations of bonded objects, ensouled artifices and device-integration. He is an expert on wards as they relate to energy channelling and containment, and developed a few interesting designs himself. If you're familiar with his work, you will recognise that the carrier containers for our shard-stones are enmeshed with a Teller pattern ward.

He's also more commonly known for his political stance. He's an outspoken supporter for of the Linked Autonomists party and ahs written quite a few dry pamphlets on state-sponsored support systems. You might be vaguely familiar with his most quoted work, the Bread Conquest.

We can't find anything in the records that indicate a subversive bent or an inclination to human experimentation. His specialisation also isn't channeling. Yes, Amwise Teller knows wards, he must for his work, but his primary focus has always been sigilcore integration systemics and autonomous craft operations. He works in steel and chemistry, not flesh. He's not a Convocant. He's a chemist with a radical predisposition.

It may be that he is being coerced into helping those with malign designs. It is hard to imagine what could be the leverage however, Amwise Teller is rich beyond easy accounting because of the royalties he receives from design patents and for consulting work. He has also left behind a string of wives and partners and is currently un-attached.

You could mimic reach, shape and certain physical festures however.

We can add some subte padding and a few laters of chain mail. 6 Ablative HP, one reforging. Again, while it is a bother, it would be crass to arrive at Amwise Teller’s abode dressed for a fight Lantern. That means no heavy plate, weapons stay in the sheath and we do not break his doors down. He is not a criminal, he is a suspect and potentially a victim.

In the affairs of high bonded chemicae, a little discretion is preferable.

This sunkissed manor stands alone amongst a rollling plain. We follow a winding dirt road with deep marks of much transport until we arrive to a hill that Ostroskon reigns over, supreme. A banner of the Bonded flap in the brisk wind, declaring this place a sanctum for all who seek knowledge, unaffiliated with the local government, a little enclave of the House itself rooted among Vanadian Soil.

One of the guard-clerks on duty doff a hat at our approach and step forward to take heed. The uniform is austure, the man wearing it well-groomed and with a certain regal bearing. His hands do not bear the mark of much sword practice despite his elaborate blade. Our inspector attachment whispers to us in the closing moments before the young man steps in - a local university student, these guards will all be such, here as an intern-clerk-helper to work and study beneath the great and grand Amwise Teller. They do this as part pilgrimage, part hope that some spark of genius might rub off on their collective skulls.

My last . . . t-time with the Lanterns were not pleasant. I am glad to be of Service to your kind, b-but there have been reports of oddities and I have not had much time to sleep l-lately.

I try my best but the night terrors get me. I think... Of the things I saw. You fight them every night. The gaunt nightmares. These things that crawl. I commend you on your bravery and your s-skill. I hope today will a simple outing. I have interacted with The Bonded before. Amwise will not be too much of a problem. He is a distracted, studious sort. Keep your eyes open for those around him. The Statues have hollowed insides and are more akin to sigilcraft than ornamentation. They appear to be some kind of replica of a warrior-caste from the older Pytherii period. Princeps would be the name.

Given that Amwise Teller works with Sigilcraft as his primary obsession it is good to expect the statues to be functional.

The House itself also appears to be riven through with pipes carrying materials from section to section, powered by some immense contraption at the heart of it all. The entire thing is an engineering master piece.

There is no sign of Nightgaunt taint, no Breaches, No Nexii, no Folds, No Spritelings in this area. You feel a slight sense of relief. In fact the entire area is carefully warded (again, centered on the House) against any sort of Influence from the Other. Amwise Teller might not want convocacational energy to influence or interfere with his work.

That makes our task here more curious, because we are on the trail of just such a monstrosity. He might be HIDING a specialised chamber to conduct work in beneath the wards. Or, he might not be interfering with the Other at all.

I had heard Amwise had experimented on pathfinder designs, but this unprecedented. It looks akin to some kind of clockwork rifle. I've heard of these things: they fire as many bullets as they have available, without reloading or the man using it being tired. AH, astute observation. I should expect such from Lanterns, aye! Fireglass in abundance, lenses, bonded steel, sigilplates and smaller, specialist components. Some band of brigands and thugs have been attacking our shipments - full wagons, carrying the banner of the Bonded no less - and making away with this. We've managed to re-acquire some with the simple expedient of paying for it from the black market once the scoundrels try to fence it. it is such a bother as it delays the arrival by weeks! Weeks!

This place is humble and tranquil and very, very clean. Pipes run along the walls and hum as they radiate a faint heat.
