You kneel down with Burke in the thick roots of a huge tree next to the river. Just across the river is the ship. And while you’re excited to get back, you’re also damn exhausted from that fight and from having to avoid getting eaten by that Titanoboa. It’s been an exhausting morning on top of everything else. And the weight of it is absolutely crushing you. Burke tosses you an energy bar as she too takes knee and looks south across the river with her binoculars. Gratefully you unwrap it and start munching down. Stale and tasteless as it is, any food is good food at this point. You can’t imagine your smell either. You’ve been swimming in shitwater for who knows how long. “How is everyone?” you ask quietly.

Burke puts her binoculars down, turning her boonie cap up to look at you. “Not well.”

“How not well?” Oh great, another thing to worry about.

“I’d rather not explain now, not while we’re out here,” she says.

“You can’t just say that things aren’t well to me and not explain them,” you say. “We’re not under attack and I sure as shit don’t see any Lizards around.” Burke frowns, a little frustrated by your persistence. “Even a short explanation would be nice.”

She glances to the side, then shrugs. “Fine. When Godwin came back up and said you got trapped down there by accident, I don’t think any of us believed it. Especially not Tierney.”

“How not Tierney?” Your worry starts to intensify.

“She beat the crap out of Godwin,” says Burke. “And not like…” Burke pauses, looking down at the ground. She scoots up to you, now whispering a little. “You know when people get real angry, they lose sight of themselves?” She leans close, looking you dead in the eye. “It took five of us to wrestle Tierney off of Godwin.” You lean back a bit, stunned. “And she injured everyone pulling her off. She bit Hood, she cracked two of Levy’s ribs, dislocated Connell’s shoulder, broke some of Smitty’s fingers, even Tombs got his wrist cracked by her. Graves had to sedate her and we barricaded her in the Command truck’s shower.”

“You’re frakking with me.” There’s no way Tierney is capable of that.
>>
>>3786219
“I watched,” says Burke. “We all did our best to wrestle her off because she was going to kill Godwin. Your Wife and those Deino buddies just watched weirdly. Must’ve thought it was some weird spat between us outworlders.” You’re silent. What has she done? Dear God. “And as for Godwin… well, he’s alive.”

“What kind of shape is he in?” you ask.

“Tierney beat him stupid. Quite literally in fact,” she says. “She smashed his head into a log, hard. Nearly caved his face in. I’ll be surprised if he can form complete sentences as soon he recovers.” God. Much as you didn’t like him, you wouldn’t have rendered him an invalid. At least, you hope you’d have the self-control not to. This is an absolute shitshow! “Look, Boo. I’m glad I found you. Genuinely. Because if Tierney sees you, she’ll probably calm down. I say probably. I really hope she does.” She stands up. “But suffice to say, nobody thinks Tierney is kid anymore.” She offers her hand to you.

You take it, and she helps pull you up. “What do they think now?”

“Now?” Burke quirks her brow. She nods to the river. “They think she’s a frakking monster.”

> “I still say you’re bullshitting. There’s no way she’s capable of that.”

Welcome back to No One Gets Left Behind. Last time, you escaped from a cave, bodied a Raptor Major, and were rescued by Burke. And now you find yourself back in the thick of it.

Unfortunately I could not update earlier. In fact, I'm gonna be busy most of this weekend so updates will be kind of sporadic. I wanted to run this weekend though because this was feeling fresh in my head. So go ahead and leave your votes in and I'll update once I'm able to.

> “I always had my suspicions. She could never quite control herself.”

“I always had my suspicions,” you remark. “She could never quite control herself.” Burke nods, a silent agreement. “But… to think she’d lose control like that.”

“It’s because she’s really frakking thirsty for you and doesn’t know how to handle that.” Okay, she didn’t have to word it like that but okay. “That said, even I’m kind of scared of her now. It’s one thing if someone is just a freak by design. It’s another if they can’t handle being a freak.”

“Let’s not start calling her a freak,” you say firmly. “Unstable, yes. Freak? No. I think what she needs is someone to talk to and someone who can help her.” Burke is quiet, staring at you with unbelieving eyes. You don’t know if you can really convince Burke of that. Hell, it’s tougher to convince yourself. But it’s worked with Tierney before. And hopefully it will work now. “Now. Let’s get back to-“ Burke holds out a hand, stopping you.

The two of you crouch down again, skulking up to the edge of the woods. She points ahead across the river.

Feeding at the river now are Triceratops, three of them. They drink water at the river, with a pair of Stenonychosaurus standing on top of them looking around. Another pair drink at the water too on the right. It seems they’re carrying what look to be explosives on the Triceratops. Maybe meaning to blow up the jungle?

Burke signs out to you two options. They can either blow straight through them seeing as how there’s only four of them. Or you can go around and hopefully not alert anybody. It’ll take longer to get around but alerting the Lizards is not something you want to do right now. Is it?

> Go around.

You signal for the both of you to go around. She nods. Alright. You ready your Carbine and start the long walk around them downriver. You won’t chance an encounter now. And going near the Hill is going to be tantamount to suicide at this point.

It takes some more time walking in silence, trying not to make any unnecessary noise. Unfortunately, one thing that you do kind of have to deal with is smell. You noticed that things go immediately quiet when you walk. It’s animals scenting out the Titan’s shit that you’re covered in. They think the Titanoboa is somewhere nearby so they go quiet. If the Lizards have any kind of brain, they’ll notice that too. You’ve definitely noticed it. There’s a certain ringing in your ear that seems to poke at your ear as you walk under the quiet. Every crackle of twigs or grass blade under your boots sound as if they’re right next to your ear. Not something you really feel comfortable with right now.

Burke stops you, then points across the river. Nobody there. Excellent time to cross. The two of you sprint for it, aiming to get across quickly. No sneaking across in the open over water so the best bet is speed. You splash through the water, hurrying away.

Once you’re across, you hear a bang. You push Burke down into a bush and lie still. Burke holds her breath, you on top of her back, motionless. You hear the sharp chirping of Stenos nearby, then the low groan of another animal. You slowly get up and look.

In a small clearing nearby, two Stenos have hunted down a lone dwarf Sauropod. The Sauropod calls out in pain, lying on its side. The Stenos slash and bite into its neck, spraying blood and meat over the ground as they start to eat the poor beast alive. Two more Stenos come out of the woods, and immediately holster weapons and start preying into the animal. The Sauropod uselessly whips its tail and kicks its legs, but cannot keep the four Lizards from consuming it.

Damn things.

Burke whispers to you. “It’d be nice if you get off me.”

Remember how I said we'd have more standard updates this weekend? I lied. No updates today but I'll get to updates tomorrow morning. Stand by then.
>>
>> They’re distracted, so keep moving.

You get up off of Burke and dust yourself down. So far, the Stenos haven’t heard you or Burke. Much as you’d like to put the poor animal out of its misery, you decide not to risk it. If they call out, they might summon more reinforcements to come down here and frak shit up. You’re not going to risk letting the base get discovered just for that. You help Burke to her feet, and with that she guides you back.

The walk back is relatively uneventful save for that encounter. But once you come back to the ship, things seem incredibly sour. “Ow! Ow! Motherf- AH!” Graves dabs a damp rag against Hood’s bloodied face. “Son of a bitch!”

“Aw, you big baby, it’s just a bite-“

“On my frakking face you bitch! Ah!” He yelps, kicking his legs. Hood, Levy, Connell, Smitty, and Tombs all sit down by the Land Rover, with everyone else loitering around. Burke whistles, raising her hand. They all turn to you. Rutledge comes down from the watchtower, surprise and awe on his face.

“Well, well,” he says. “The hero returns.” He holds his hand out to you. You shake it, nodding to him. Nielson comes up to you, grinning as he slaps your back. You grab his hand and thump your shoulder against his chest, feeling at ease seeing him. Thank goodness he’s okay. “As you can see, things are-“

“Your bitch bit me!” Hood screams, pointing to the bite mark on his face. “Almost frakking took a chunk out of my frakking face!”

Levy holds his gut, grimacing. “What the hell kind of girl is that? She threw us all down like a bunch of wet rags!”

Connell holds his shoulder, groaning. “Tierney’s a freakin’ monster! It was insane! You should’ve seen what she did to poor Godwin.”

“Frak Godwin.” Graves stands up, rubbing her bloodied hands. “He deserved it.” Connell glares at Graves, clear disagreement and fury in his eyes. Smitty and Tombs quietly sit, holding their injured hands in gauze wraps and improvised splints. She comes over to you. “Godwin’s stable,” she reports, not even commenting on your smell. She takes a sniff and recoils for a second before saying, “Tierney we locked in the shower in the Command Truck. So far she hasn’t made a peep. We made sure she doesn’t have anything in there that she could hurt herself with.”

“Good, good,” you say.

“We should just frakking shoot Tierney,” Hood growls. “She’s a goddamn monster!” You look around, and see the Wife staring at you from the stable. Not a sound. The kids too poke their heads over the stable wall, clearly dismayed.

Stoakes steps up, holding the Runt in her arms. “N-… Now, Hood. That-“
>>
>>3802000
“She frakking beat Godwin stupid, Stoakes!” Hood shouts. He stands up. “And look what she frakking did to my goddamn face!” Stoakes steps back, looking down in the ground. “She’s a goddamn animal!” Rutledge puts his hands to his hips, looking at you. Everyone else looks at you as well, wondering what the hell you’re going to do. “We oughta just shoot that bitch and be done with her because she’s frakking insane!”

“Calm down, Hood,” you say. “I’ll handle it.” Hood gives you a look that says that you better. Not like you’ll bow to him. But his concerns are valid all the same. You look at Graves. “Can you take me to Godwin?”

She nods. “Sure.” She motions for Burke and Rutledge to come along as well. You point to Nielson and nod to him. He nods back, giving a thumbs up. The four of you step in through the back of the Command truck. Joffrey sits there, rocking back and forth on his bunk. But what was most apparent was two things. One, the shower was barricade off with the DAB and a log. And two was Godwin, lying on one of the bunks. You flinch looking at him. His face is bloodied severely. One of his eyes is blood shot, the other isn’t open. In his mouth several teeth were missing, and blood was leaking from the corners of his lips. And his forehead most importantly was covered up in bloody gauze and medigel. “All I could do to keep him from dying. I’ll have the AutoDoc look at him but preliminary is that he’s going to be quite brain damaged from that.”

“Clearly,” says Rutledge.

You lean over and look at Godwin. He looks at you, and immediately flinches away, grumbling. He can’t even form words now. But he seems scared of you for sure. You hold your hand out to him. He gives out a loud groan, trying to crawl away from you. Graves slaps your hand down, glaring at you. “Be nice,” says Graves.

“Be nice,” you mutter. “He almost killed me.”

Rutledge smirks. “Only seems fair.”

Graves folds her arms, glaring at the both of you. “Look, Godwin may have almost killed Daddy here, that I can admit. But we are not savages. He can face justice when he gets back home. What Tierney did was understandable but what was way out of line. And now look what’s happened.” He –almost- killed you. How is this a discussion?

“I at least want to know why he tried to kill me.” You crack your knuckles. “Just give me five minutes and I can be gentle-“ She shoves you back. Your eye twitches for a second. Did she just push you? Rutledge stares at her shocked. Even Burke looks surprised by that.

“Let him rest first at least,” she hisses. “He’s been knocked stupid. Did he deserve it? Sure. But I’m the goddamn medic here. It’s my goddamn job to fix him. And I am not gonna let you make things worse for him now. Understand?”

You squint at her. She gives you a very fierce glare in response.

“Fine.” You cross your arms, glaring at Graves. If she touches you like that again, you’re going to give her something worse than a shove. “I won’t add to what Tierney’s done. But he nearly killed me. I wanna know why. Can he at least talk?”

Graves looks at Rutledge. Rutledge shrugs and says, “He was muttering shit when Graves was fixing him.”

“Alright,” you say. You nod to Graves. “Ask him why he did it.”

Graves sighs, hesitating for a second before turning and putting her hand on Godwin’s shoulder. “Godwin.” Godwin grits his teeth, shaking as he stares at you. “Godwin. Not at him. Look at me.” She floats her finger in front of his eyes, getting his attention before drawing it to her face. “Thank you, sweetie. Now. Slowly, don’t push yourself, okay?” Godwin nods slowly, his jaw quivering a little as he tries to speak. “Okay. What happened? Why did you try to kill him?” Rutledge cocks his head, looking at Godwin curiously. You glance at Rutledge, then at Godwin.

Godwin shakes as he lies on his side, exhaling heavily as he tries let the words out. “Was…” He hisses again, taking a deep breath. “He…” He hisses. “He… lied.” You straighten up, glaring at him. “Lied…”

“Lied about what?” you ask.

Burke shrugs. “Probably about Boo sharing the pussy,” she says. Godwin growls, trying to find words. You can see the effort straining him. To the point that Godwin simply tucks him down and quietly whispers to him.

“It’s okay, sweetie, lie down, lie down,” she whispers to him. Godwin groans, clenching his fists. “Don’t struggle, it’s okay.” Godwin relaxes his breathing, moaning, gibbering. It seems Tierney’s done you something of a favor. Godwin literally –can’t- say anything about he did for you now. She looks at you. “Happy now?”

“I guess,” you say. You glance at Burke. She shrugs again, then heads outside.

Rutledge says, “Well, I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone.” He sniffs at you. “Christ, you smell like the ass-end of an ass.” He steps outside too, snickering.

Graves shakes her head, giving a very soft glare. “So we have a flamethrower guy who now is too retarded to operate the flamethrower let alone eat his own food. This is lovely.”

“We could just shoot him and put him out of his misery,” you say. Godwin flinches, yelping slightly at that. He can at least understand it seems.

“Yeah, not funny, Daddy,” Graves says. She motions to the shower. “We gonna…?”

> “Let’s let her have some time alone. I’ll talk to her later.”

“Right. Okay, let’s let her have some time alone in there. I’ll talk to her later.” You look at the shower door. Surely she can actually hear you out there. You’d think she’d have heard you by now. You look at Graves. “She’s not dead, is she?”

Graves said, “I check on her every now and again. She’s okay.” Fair enough. “What, are you expecting another bath?”

“I mean. Yeah,” you say, motioning to yourself. “Look at me. I smell like shit.”

She nods. “Yeah. You do.”

“So…”

“Fine.” She rolls her eyes. “I’ll get the bucket.” She steps down out of the command truck. “But listen, Daddy. Real talk for a second.” She gently punches your arm, giving you a stern look. “People are going to be scared of Tierney. Sooner or later, we will have to talk with her. And we’ll need to discuss this as a group.”

You sigh. “Do we?”

“Daddy. She’s lost everyone’s trust,” she says. “It was hard enough thinking she was actually a soldier. Now you want us to believe she won’t randomly snap and attack people again?” You can understand where Graves is coming from. Still however, Tierney is your girl. She’s not going to do that again if you can help it. All she needs is a gentle touch. “Anyway. I’ll get the materials. We can get you soaked out here. Get ready to get bathed in public.”

“In public?” you ask. “Why not-“

She leans to the side, looking at you with wide eyes. “Awww, don’t want people seeing your babydick, Daddy?” You stare at her. “What’s the matter? Afraid I’m gonna molest you in front of all your friends?” You keep staring at her. “Yeah, that’s right. Shut the frak up. I’ll clean you. I don’t give a shit who’s watching. We’re not going behind a tree. And if you don’t like it, you can have fun with the yeast infection so severe you’re growing bread in your ass.” She storms up, nearly walking right into Burke and Rutledge.
>>
>>3805083
Rutledge snorts. “What’s her deal?”

“Nothing,” you say. “I’ll talk to Tierney later. How’s everything here?”

“We’ve seen some patrols get as close as several hundred meters,” Burke says. “But none of them manage to sniff us out. I think the Deinos have been masking the place’s and by extension our scent with their own. It’s going to be hard for the Lizards to find us if they don’t know where to look.” That’s good at least.

Rutledge says, “I was gonna take some people inside too to make sure we’re all clear but seeing as how a lot of people are wounded now well… I’m gonna hold off on that. We can bunk up out here. I’ll get some tents going.”

“Right,” you say. “Need any help?”

“If you’re free,” he says. “I’d love me a little mansion.” He giggles a little, stepping away to rejoin his crew.

Burke quirks her brow at him, then she looks at you. “Anyway, I’ll help out with the bath too,” says Burke.

“What.” You look at her.

“What?” she asks. “I need a bit of a soak too, Tierney’s taking up the damn shower. Might as well get myself going too.” She pulls off her boonie hat, then her poncho. “Best not to waste the water, Boo.” And with that, she too takes her leave.

Oh God.
