You're Douglas, and it's looking like today is gonna be another good one! You woke up this morning to the sound of birdsong once again, reminding you that you have just about the best job in the whole wide world. After climbing into your hiking clothes, slipping on your hat and armband, and climbing down to the forest floor, you took a deep breath to prepare yourself for another day of firewatching. You've got a rather simple task list, as nothing too important is happening today. Though, in your opinion, everything that goes on here is important-

The sky is that beautiful bright blue color, white clouds whisping their way among the eachother. Beautiful pines loom above you, swaying in the breeze. Your firewatch tower behind you, you have a job to do.

Pulling off your backpack, you check the list that you wrote the night before to prepare.
These are your tasks for the day, what're you going to go for first?

Looking down at the notebook paper in your hands, you decide that the best course of action to kick your day off with is patrolling the grounds. That of course, can warm up your leg muscles after a long night of resting, and it also leaves the option for maybe getting some other smaller things done if you happen to come across them. Before heading off though, you decide to check in the geocache that’s right at the base of the tower. Finding a whole lot of nothing (other than a few cobwebs and a friendly looking spider), you decide that maybe it’s for the best to start heading on your way.

Now on your way, you find yourself looking about. Nature has never ceased to amaze you, and seeing all the beautiful greens brings a sense of peace and calm to your mind. As you walk, you shove the paper back into your backpack before coming to the first fork in the trail. Of course, there’s always the option of taking a detour and making your own path to patrol on.

Taking a right, and heading towards the riverside, you take some time to admire some of the berry bushes. If you remember correctly, some of the berries that grow in the area are almost in season, and they’d make a delicious snack in a while. If not for you, then most definitely the local fauna.

Arriving at your destination, you squat down by the water’s edge and look into the deep blues. This was a popular fishing spot, and there was no doubt that people had been here earlier, after all you’d heard their chatter the day prior during the afternoon. After spotting a single fish under the ripples, you decide that everything in the area is ok, especially since there aren’t any people at the moment that need to be lectured about the importance of following the rules.

Though, maybe it wouldn’t hurt to hang out a little longer here, and do something else.

You stick around for a little bit, rustling the bushes to see if there’s anything stuck in them and checking the ground for any trash. To your dismay, you need to take the trash bag out from your backpack, open it up, and begin collecting some of the things left behind by the rather rude visitors. Next time they visited, you’d most definitely give them a piece of your mind. Picking up a cigarette and tossing it into the bag, you can’t help but to not feel any anger, merely disgust and disappointment. Doing this to one of the few spots of real nature in the world should be considered a sin.

Within the trash bag, you collect the following:
Metal Beer Can (Empty) x3
Glass Beer Bottle (Empty) x2
Cigarette Butt (Wet) x5
Sandwich Bag (Empty) x1

Within your searches for more litter, you also come across what seems to be some sort of grey-ish colored tackle box pushed away under the bushes. Upon attempting to open it, it seems to be either locked or stuck shut.

Making your way away from the river, you roll up the trash bag’s opening a little bit and shove it into your backpack so you’d have your hands free at least. Just another day on the job, you suppose. Looking back and forth, once in the direction of your tower and the second towards the other direction and where you came from, you felt ready for some more patrolling for sure. Especially knowing now, that there was probably some more litter awaiting you wherever you happened to roam.

This time, you’d take a left, heading in the direction of some rather nice looking rock formations that you like to relax on occasionally, especially when the sun is warming up the top of them just right. Usually, when you run across them, you recommend that photographers take this route due to the classic red mushrooms that reside near the shadowy bottom of the rocks.

When you arrive, you pat the plush green moss on the rock, it’s a little damp due to its excellent skill in absorbing moisture, but other than that it’s nice and soft. Using a hand to shield your eyes, you look up towards the top of the rock. It doesn’t seem like there’s anything up there other than a pretty view today!

( Rolled 56 + 5 (1d100 + 5) )

Doing your very best, you manage to get a couple rather decent footholds. Though, the wet moss isn’t making your life any easier at the moment. The more you head up though, the better it becomes for you. Making it about halfway, you slip a little bit on a bit of moss and think that maybe if you had tried this tomorrow, the moss would have had some time to dry. Though, nothing like a little bit of wet moss had stopped you before, so why should it just stop you now?

Climbing your way to the top, you look at the rather nice view, finger muscles just a little bit tired from needing to grip things like that in order to get all the way up. Now that you’re up here though, aside from the view, you find a couple of paint tubes on the ground. Must’ve been from someone trying to paint the horizon or something. As they say, finders keepers.

Sitting down at the top with your newly gained paints, you watch the sky for a couple moments before your mind wanders to what you should, or could be doing.

Letting your mind wander, you look up into the clouds rather than simply the horizon. The sky is extremely beautiful, but since you always say that, it isn’t really anything of note that it looks beautiful today in specific. Finding yourself beginning to think of other things though, you start to zone out a little bit.

This is one of your best spots to think in, other than in your tower. Really, anywhere high up is a rather nice place to think. In these spots, you find yourself thinking of people you know, troubles you might have, tasks that you have yet to do, and important things of that nature. (Along with the occasional extra thought that isn’t important.

At the moment though, you consider the tasks that you haven’t done yet. You consider the geocaches, and the fact that you haven’t seen much litter yet. Not that it’s a bad thing that you haven’t seen very much litter, it might mean that people are finally taking the park rules seriously. Either that, or people have just stopped going so far into the park. The geocaches however, are one of your favorite daily chores, since you get to go all around and see what people have left in them. Sometimes, they leave snacks…

You consider the fact that nobody has radio’d you today, not even a single good morning, not that it’s out of the ordinary for that to happen. Not many of your fellow co-workers share the same love for nature after all. It’s rare to get a response unless it’s an emergency, or questions have to be asked.

Finally, your mind seems to waltz to the fact that perhaps you want to go fishing sometimes. Seeing that fish earlier reminded you that sometimes it’s good to take a break and just relax. Like how you are now!

Making your way back down the rocks, once you’re close enough to the bottom of them, you decide to maybe give your classic greeting on the radio. It never hurts to give it a shot, after all, you never know when one of the others will decide to maybe lighten up for a change and stop being such sticks in the mud. Pushing the button on the walkie-talkie, you make your message.

“Heeeelll-ooo? Gooood morning everyone!”

Releasing the button, you smile to yourself. Waiting a couple moments for an answer that doesn’t come before putting the device back onto the backpack strap where it was being held previously. Seems like nobody really wants to talk right now, but hey, when is it not like that.

You don’t feel as if there’s anything else you can do near the rocks, but you can always come back later if you change your mind. Returning to the fork, you notice that you’ve spent a lot of time patrolling the trails so far. There’s just enough time left in the day to maybe get a chore or two done before it’s dark. Though, of course, there’s nothing wrong with taking a night-hike. (Even though you’re positive that you left the lantern back in the tower earlier.)

This is the last spot to patrol, though it’s not exactly a spot that’s really necessary to do so, you can’t help but to enjoy nature in its most unrefined state. You’ve been through this spot before, and you know that it leads to the spot where the river and the rocks sort of meet together a little bit.

Stepping through bushes, getting stung by little clusters of nettles, these were all the norm and just another part of the job that you love. Pushing a couple of bushes to the side a little in order to squeeze through them, you find yourself not finding anything of too much importance. Not too much stands out, and that’s understandable because not many people veer off the trails unless they’re really looking for adventure.

Flipping the coin and dropping it on the ground, you squat down to pick it up, seeing it had landed on heads. This means that it’s most definitely time to keep on heading into the wilderness, just in case some unruly kids get caught messing around in the woods before it gets dark.

Using the stones in the river as little stepping stones, you proceed to go through the underbrush that was on the other side, a branch thwacking you in the face. Taking a moment to stop and actually rub your nose a little bit where the branch had hit you, the walkie-talkie makes a small static noise. Jumping a little bit in surprise, you take it out and examine it before putting it back. Someone must’ve leaned on theirs or something along those lines.

Nothing seems to be out here though, just some more bushes and trees, there doesn’t even seem to be any litter in the general area that you can see.

“Someone there?”

Releasing the button, you patiently hold the walkie-talkie for a couple moments before looking around a little between the trees to see if someone is nearby, and simply playing some sort of dumb practical joke. There doesn’t seem to be anyone though. After a couple moments, you decide to start heading back to the fork as you await a response.

Cycling through the three channels, nothing seems to be off about the other channels, nothing being said. Though, upon switching back to the third channel, you’re greeted by a rather harsh and loud noise which nearly makes you take a wrong step on the stairs.

The garbled noises put you off a little, but you assume that it’s just the signal, letting it continue in case the other person gets closer (albeit on a lower volume) and continue up the stairs.

You gain one level of fear, and become slightly off put by the unintelligible noises and lack of response.

Putting your hat and walkie-talkie onto your nightstand, and taking the hair elastic out of your hair. The amazing view of the sunset and the taste of a Nurture Field Honey Oat Granola bar seems to push away any of the worries that you’d been feeling before.

Getting out of those pants and putting them to the side as well, you slip into your bed, rolling onto your side to look at the walkie-talkie as it continued to release its horrid noises. This brings you to the thought of how long someone would have to be holding that button for, and how much their fingers might be cramping right now.

Now that you’re in bed though, you find it a little hard to sleep with that thing constantly making noise. You’re used to the sounds of night-life and such, not whoever doesn’t know how to stop making a racket.

You have returned to Fear Level 0 from taking time to relax.

Allowing your mind to wander, you stare up at the ceiling of the room, thinking about the things that you’ve done today and what you’ll have to do tomorrow.

Today you’ve patrolled the local area to the east of your tower. Having checked out the riverside, there was only litter there. Which you had cleaned up as usual. It’s a pretty popular fishing season during the fall, and you feel like there will definitely be litter there after the next round of people show up there. Speaking of the riverside, there was the box that you couldn’t get open. You’d left it there earlier for later, and hadn’t gone back to check it out again. Not that you had anything on you to help you get it open of course. You’d also climbed the small shroom-growing rock formation, relaxing on the top and finding some paint tubes after taking a moment to relax there as well. After going through the wilderness, a strange noise continues to come through the walkie-talkie on channel three.

Finding yourself thinking a little more about the strange noise that’s still happening to this moment, you consider the fact that nobody had responded today, and you hadn’t heard anything through the long distance radio either. This wasn’t unusual, as you only receive messages about important things or the occasional message reminding about certain things. But would it really hurt the others to have a decent conversation with you? Maybe even have a casual conversation or put some time to the side to hike and meet up just for some face-to-face conversation? It’s been a while since you’ve just had a casual conversation with anyone, and you feel as though it takes a slight toll on your mental well-being. Though, that’s the usual, and it’s hard to change the usual.

Nevermind the others though, you could always get a pet or something. It would have to come in with the next round of supplies though, and you don’t think that’d be safe. You used to have a pet ferret, but it had gotten loose during the night during one of the previous years, and escaped. It’s tank is still there, in case you happen to come across something else. Though, no cute animal would be able to replace Minny.

Recalling your ventures in the underbrush, you feel over your legs in a quick manner, moving the blanket to the side to actually look for ticks. There are none though, thankfully. You chalk this up to the fact that you hadn’t went too far in, or spent very much time there compared to the other places.

You hadn’t checked the geocaches today, and you feel as though there’s probably more litter to pick up somewhere. Nothing you can’t handle of course.

As soon as you feel yourself finally drift off into the nothingness of sleep, you feel your eyes open back up. To reveal absolutely nothing but darkness. Save for a few little floating purple-ish white lights that you want to assume are fireflies despite their unnatural coloring. Despite the darkness and the feeling of vertigo that has yet to leave your system, you press on, ignoring the feeling of little twigs and such stabbing at the bottom of your feet. You bump into a tree a little bit, but you decide to pay it no mind, moving to the side a little and using your free hand to push past any bushes that you felt in your path.

The amount of those little glowing spots are increasing as you walk, you can just barely see the outlines of your hand when you move it in front of you to push another bush.

There's a soft feeling of general anxiety clawing at the back of your mind, but you don't know why.

Despite the fact that you can barely see it, this object seems to be more well-lit than its surrounding area. It looks akin to an icebox, but you’re not quite sure of the object’s nature. All you know is that it’s filling you with a sense of dread.

Turning just a little bit, towards the sound, but not too much, you instinctively lift whatever you’re holding just a little bit. Staring into the darkness, you only feel the dizziness and nausea sensations start to rise at a practically exponential rate. The box is still in your line of sight, but nothing seems to be happening with it.

“Hello?”

Staggering a little bit, you attempt to keep balance despite your condition. It feels like gravity is pulling you towards the ground.

Barely able to continue standing, you stagger a little bit, glancing about as the rustling suddenly stops. Feeling your legs wobble a tiny amount under the weight of the rest of your body, you couldn’t even step to the side as something rather large hits you in the head.

Crumpling to the ground, you drop the object that you were holding, and your vision begins to blur. Closing your eyes again as the pain of your head and the weight of gravity on your body lull your senses away.

You wake up to the sound of birds chirping, it’s another day, Douglas! Time to get breakfast before heading out and getting your duties done!

For some reason though, you can’t help but to just rub the top of your head a little. It feels like you have some sort of splitting headache. If you didn’t know better, you’d say that you had something to drink last night. Sliding out of bed, you check the time.

It’s 6:53 AM.

Dragging yourself out of bed, you wonder what you’re even going to have for breakfast. Probably just something small since you don’t feel too hot today. Rummaging through a shelf, you quickly retrieve a box of Antelope Cakes. Nothing like digging into the sweet stuff to distract yourself from pain.

Unwrapping the treat, you shove the delicious little cake into your mouth as you gather together another outfit and start getting dressed. You’ll have to do laundry at some point, but for now the concept of laundry doesn’t bother you too much, especially since there are things to get done today.

Looking out the window for a brief moment, and scanning across the tops of the pines, you consider the fact that maybe you should take the day off, not do very much. The idea gets thrown out though, after all the job is more important than taking a break, especially since the day just started. Breaks can come later.

You don’t have a shower in the tower! You have soap in your supplies, rivers, and a water pump out in one of the campsites to the south! The idea of a good wash though is very tempting…

You shove the soap into your backpack with the rest of your stuff, donning your hat and your arm band. Picking up the walkie-talkie, you examine it a little before putting it carefully onto it’s spot in the backpack. Never know when it’ll make strange new sounds these days after all. Approaching the door, you shove your feet into your hiking shoes, and open the door.

Heading down to the bottom of the stairs, you take a moment to think about the things that you might want to think about doing today. (Even though the concept of taking a real day off is starting to grow on you the more the dull throbbing in your skull continues on.)

So far you still need to check on the geocaches and pick up any litter if you see it. Though, these are both really things that can be done if you see either a geocache, or litter, so maybe, you really can just take the day off and play things cool.

Today you feel like just going with the flow (and showering!)

Heading out in the southern direction, you do your best to get some blood flowing. There’s nothing wrong with getting a little exercise done before a nice rewarding wash. Walking at a brisk pace, you come across the fork that you’d encountered previously. There’s an obvious need for some sort of bathing to occur first though, so you decide that maybe you can return later if you really wanted to check over the areas again.

Continuing in the direction of the little riverside, you have a brief moment to attempt to feel over the top of your head to see if there are any bumps that might be causing the pain. But there’s nothing, no goose eggs or anything of the sort that would be bugging your head.

Arriving at your destination, you’re pleased to see that nobody had littered here during the night, and it seems as though nobody had come back either to do anything else.

Looks like it’s absolutely time to get clean! Stripping down to underwear, and putting your clothes and other things onto a nearby bush, you wade into the little riverside with soap in hand. Though, you need to go upstream a little bit to find anything that’s waist deep, the moment you arrive, you get started on getting yourself nice and clean. There’s nothing like some cold clean river water to calm you down and cure any possible troubles you’d been having prior.

After a couple minutes of scrubbing and getting fresh, you sink into the water a little to properly relax.

Ahhh… So calming… Other than the fish touching your toes, that is-

There’s not time for much relaxation though, and despite the slight headache that you’ve still got going on, there are much more important matters to attend to! Who’s Relaxation? Maybe you’ll meet her later. For the time being, you just wade back to the much shallower area to retrieve your clothing from the bushes. Thankfully, nobody had decided to pull a fast one and steal anything of yours.

Slipping into your clothes, despite still being wet, you feel a little bit like some sort of drowned rat. That’s okay though, since the warm-ish fall sun will most definitely aid you in drying off during your treks! You don the backpack as well, can’t forget something that important after all.

Now that you’re back at the start of the little riverside though, it’s time to put things into proper motion and decide what you’ll be doing.

Well, looks like it’s about time that you got going now that you have everything you need. Choosing to head off further into the south, you carefully continue along the trail, making sure you don’t get your socks wet or anything from the tiny stream while you were crossing over it. It’s been a while since you just walked a trail without anything specific to do. Maybe today will keep going in the direction of being calm and relaxing. No need to get your hopes up though! You feel as though litter, or an irresponsible hiker may be lurking around any corner!

Seems like you were thinking for quite a while about the possibilities though, and have made it to another fork in the trail. Thankfully, you’re pretty good with the area, and you know where they go.

It’s been a while since you’ve seen anyone, maybe it would be nice for a change to check in on some campers. Or even just to see if there were any there. Of course, you would’ve done this earlier but you hadn’t seen any campfire smoke. A visit wouldn’t do any harm though.

Walking along this trail and looking down at the dirt that had been walked over so many times before made you think for a moment about how amazingly old this place is. This park has been going for long enough that the camping trails are extremely distinct and pleasant to walk on (other than the large tree roots that you’re doing your best not to trip over every couple of seconds.

Arriving at the campsite, it seems like there have been people here! Well, or, they still are here. Within the small clearing there’s a family-sized tent, a large cooler with a padlock on it (probably to keep the bears out), and some litter around the small fire pit. On the other side of the clearing, there’s a little water pump that looks older than time. You feel like you’re intruding on someone’s private space now, even if it looked like they had gone somewhere else for the time being.

Now that you think about it though, it’s early enough in the morning where if they usually slept in late, they might even still be in their tent.

Looking into the camp a little more, you actually approach it to stand next to the fire pit for a couple of seconds. It looks like a regular camp that you’d see whenever a family comes out here. There’s nothing that looks very out of the ordinary or outright bad. They don’t seem to be violating any rules other than the small bit of litter around the place. Of course, that’s nothing to write home about though, simply a small common mistake made by visitors in the park.

The tent is made out of vinyl or something akin to that, it’s one of the later ones. It is large and rather blue in color, with dark grey for details and the zippered door on the front of it. All the fabric windows are closed from the inside of it.

The large cooler has a white top and a bright blue bottom. A padlock is on it to most likely to discourage animals or hungry fire watchers from snooping in to steal a snack from it.

Some rather expensive looking fishing rods have been leaned up against a tree, with a tackle box near them. They might have gone fishing at some point. Some dark-colored towels are hanging on a branch near them, maybe to dry?

The litter around the fire pit is all from food and such, and you don’t see any other sort of trash other than a couple pieces of paper towels and napkins.

Well, since you feel like it probably won’t get done by itself, it’s time to officially clean up this mess by yourself. It’s like they had some sort of feast out here, which you don’t blame them because it’s their vacation and not yours, but they could have at least stored all these wrappers and junk in their own little trash bag somewhere on their little campsite, and not just all around the place like it was no big deal to just litter everywhere in nature. Nasty.

Pulling out the trash bag from your backpack, you continue to add to it, gathering even more. Mother Nature won’t keep herself clean, after all!

Within the trash bag, you collect the following:
Small Cardboard Box x2
Soda Can x3
Snack Wrappers x5
Empty Hot Dog Package x2

The day people learn to pick up after themselves, is the day you’ll be able to take a genuine break.

Squatting down by the fire pit, you don't really see anything too interesting at first until you poke through the ashes a little with a stick. Seems to be something like the little bones of a poor little mouse or frog that was caught in the flames or something of that nature. You drop the stick back and stand up proper. You have much more important things to be doing than looking at tiny little animal bones. It's time for geocache checking!

Throughout the section of the park that you've been tasked with, there are five geocaches that you can check on. One of them was next to your fire tower, and you'd already checked that one! Meaning that there are four left to check on. Usually you'd only check on one or two at most since the trips occasionally last over night, but the concept of possibly getting to all four if you pulled an all-nighter wouldn't be completely out of the question. The closest geocache would probably be the lake geocache, which is just upstream.

Deciding to keep going in the current direction, you leave the campsite and start onto a small little gravel-ridden trail. This part must have been prettied up by higher ups or something of that nature for the sake of park guests. Or maybe the amount of gravel here was natural. You haven’t actually taken the time to think of a lot of things about the park, usually you just head on your way and do the tasks that are available.

It’s around the time that people would normally eat brunch, or something of that general nature. The trees in this area are starting to thin out a little bit which gives you an opportunity to see that there are some clouds in the distance. Nothing to signify rain, just a little less sunlight right now.

This is the direction of a small abandoned mine, or something of the likes from what you’ve seen before.

Continuing the trek all the way to the mine's entrance, you place your hand on the splintering wood framing of the entrance. The stone around the beginning is starting to crack and crumble, grass and other plants have began to crawl their way down into the depths of the shaft. It looks extremely beautiful during the spring time, but alas, this is fall and the greens aren't as vibrant.

You try to peer into the dark, but you can't see anything due to the fact that it's pitch black in there!

Setting your backpack down and taking a seat under a pine, you lean up against the trunk and begin to sort your things out...
