In the era follow humanity’s ascension to the stars, Earth’s peacekeeping forces can no longer police the galaxy at large. Spread too thin over too much territory, lawlessness has become the new law in all but the most critical systems. Seeing opportunity in the chaos, mercenaries and para-military groups have sprung up, taking advantage of the need for protection and muscle in unpoliced systems. Galactic Manpower Solutions or G.M.S. is one of those groups. Known for its low prices G.M.S. is one of the cheapest mercenary groups out there that can still get the job done. With old and low quality equipment and loose recruitment policies G.M.S. is able to keep operating costs low and pass those savings on to its customers

You joined G.M.S. because…

>Former Rebel: After the capture and subsequent execution of the resistance leader, the planetary governor began to hunt down the last few stragglers of the revolt. With the governor’s forces closing in, you joined G.M.S. rather than go down with the rest of the resistance.

>Smuggler in hiding: One bad job was all it took. You were hauling something beyond dangerous for one of the galaxy’s nastiest criminal organizations, when you ran into an Earth task force looking into the gang’s activities. You were forced to jettison your cargo into a sun in order to escape your pursuers and now are now wanted by both the gang and Earth for your actions. So, like many wanted individuals, you joined the G.M.S. to disappear.

>Adventure Seeker: Bored with life on your colony world, you left seeking adventure and excitement. One of the best places to find both was with a mercenary company, but with little experience only the G.M.S. would take would take you.

>Debtor on the run: A run of bad luck that’s all it was, just a run of bad luck. Your fortunes would have turned around eventually if they’d have let you keep rolling the dice, as it is though you are deep in debt to some rather unsympathetic individuals. So, you fled your planet and join G.M.S. to escape your persistent creditors.

Feel free to suggest a name for your character, but keep it reasonable or I’ll have make it up and it will be very bland.

>Background: Smuggler in Hiding
>Background Bonus: Better evasion whether on foot or piloting a ship

“ATTENTION ALL HANDS, THE FLEET IS NOW WITHIN OPERATIONAL SPACE. ALL SHIP CREW TO REPORT TO YOUR STATIONS. ALL OPERATIONS STAFF AND SENIOR OFFICERS REPORT TO THE BRIDGE.”

As the announcement echoed through the barracks, not a soul stirred from their bunks. Until the lieutenant flicked on the lights, blinding everyone, and screamed at the top of her lungs “GET THE FUCK UP. C’mon people you want to get paid don’t you?”

“Naw, I think I’ll stay here for this one,” Said the person in the bunk below yours. “I need my- AHH” the voice yelped as something heavy slammed into their bunk.

“Not today you don’t I need everyone on deck today, especially with the all newbies coming along.”

There is a loud chorus of bitching and moaning, but reluctantly people stir from their bunks. You undo the straps holding you in your bunk and begin to float up and out of bed. You just get over the lip of your bunk when with an audible *TWANG* the artificial gravity turns back on sending you crashing to the floor along with everything and everyone else who was floating in zero-g.

“Gah, fucking maintenance, when are they gonna fix the damn gravity in this section?” The man below you curses as he picks himself up.

“You can kiss your boo boos later,” the lieutenant said pulling her boots on “I want everyone up and ready to go in five minutes, I don’t want to be late to another briefing because you can’t put your trousers on without me there to zip up your fly.”

Getting off the floor yourself, you put your uniform on and follow Lt. as she leads everyone out the door and down the hallway. At an intersection in the hall the lieutenant halts “Troopers with me to the armory. Pilots fuck off to wherever you need to be.” She shouts, before taking a right at the fork. Most of people in the line follow the Lt. to the armory, but a few break off and head left toward the hangar. As you come to the fork you turn…

You get paid based on how much the buyer's paying for the job. It then gets split among the people taking part in the mission based on the danger of their job.

Recon actually has it a little rougher than pilots do, so they're paid a little more, but all in all you're all paid the same ie: very little.

You turn left and join the small trickle of people shuffling off to the hangar. As you enter the hangar you are met with a cacophony of noise as hangar crew and pilots mill about trying to prep for the upcoming operation. Sifting your way through the chaos, you arrive at your locker and put on your flight suit. The navy blue and orange material grips tightly to your body as you pull it on and slide your sidearm into its holster at your hip. Geared up, you head over to Assignment Officer, a rather short but loud man standing on a crate surrounded by pilots. “Alright, you, you, you, and you.” The officer shouts pointing at four pilots gathered around his waist. “You’re going to be bringing the Recon teams down for their S&D mission, head over to the shuttle bay. Everyone else here is on CAS, resupply, and pickup duty.” The four chosen pilots grumble about their lot as the rest of the pilots disperse over to the launch bay.

Along the way the veteran pilots began to congregate and begin chatting and speculating on the mission. Meanwhile the newbie pilots like yourself are avoided like the plague. You were told on arrival to expect as much. No one got too close to newbies, they had a penchant for dying quickly. As you entered the launch bay the concentration of hanger crew increased and you had to avoid several trolleys of munitions as they rolled past you and to the ships. The veteran pilots quickly found their ships while you and the other new pilots walked down to the far end of the bay to settle into an unclaimed CAS ship.

You quickly appraise the unclaimed ships and make a beeline for the one that looked to be in the best repair. The ship itself wasn’t much, but it looked solid enough. It had a strange shape though, it looked like someone had smashed together a fright-trawler and an actual CAS fighter and welded the two together. As you move to enter the ship you note that the only way in is through the back cargo doors. Inside the ships spacious cargo bay you find crates of ammo and medical supplies along with explosives and other weapons. You head up a set of stairs to what you assume is the cockpit. Inside you find a technician checking the ship’s readouts. He notices you enter “You’re this one’s new pilot huh, well take a seat and I’ll tell you about some of the ship’s eccentricities you should know about.” You sink into the pilot’s chair while the technician goes over where certain readouts are. He then proceeds to rattle off what sounds like a cautionary waiver as he tells you the 101 minor wrong with the ship. Things like: “Some sparks coming out of the altimeter is fine, but too many and you’ll have a problem”, or the smell of melting plastic is normal, and “If an instrument becomes unresponsive, hit it.” By the time he finishes you don’t feel entirely safe in the ship even while it’s sitting in the hanger bay let alone out in space. Finishing his warnings about the ship he turns to you and asks any questions?

>“No” You know how to fly an unruly ship is nothing new to you and you can figure anything other surprises out on your own.
>“Yes, why does this ship look like it was two different ships just smashed together?”

Hows the control response on this thing, is it even all round or does turning left give me a smaller radius or going right takes more pull on the controls?

>>

“First, what’s the weapon’s loadout on this thing? And secondly why does this ship look like it was two different ships just smashed together?”
“To answer your first question, the ship has enough rack room for two weapons in addition to its standard Gatling Canon. Right now it’s racked up with Hellfire Rockets for antipersonnel use and a couple of Bore Missiles should a building happen to be between you and your target.” The technician answers. “As for your second question, don’t worry this is one whole ship. The original designers were trying to make a CAS ship that could also carry supplies down as well as troops hence the big cargo bay but it didn’t sell well as the ship tended to shear in half during hard turns. We managed to reinforce the ship a little by adding extra support to the mid-section, but I’d still take it easy on the turns.”

Before you could express your shock, the ship’s comm. turned on “Attention pilots, this Captain Reynolds here with your briefing. We’re heading toward a planet called Bursena. The planetary governor is currently facing a military coup and he’s hired us to take care of the traitors. Our first objective is to liberate the capital city from the coup’s forces. The client has requested we not level the city so there will not be any orbital support for forces in the city, that’s where we come in we will be supporting the ground forces as they clear the city. Now since this is a Military coup the enemy forces will have some decent hardware. Right now though, our Recon forces are knocking out the city’s LANCE batteries so you won’t have to worry about them. You will have to watch out for enemy fighters and whatever the ground troops can throw at you however. Now with the general out of the way let’s get down to the specifics.” The Captain proceeds to separate you into flight wings and then assign you to support the ground forces in certain sections of the city. As he finishes his briefing the Captain adds “Good luck to you all and remember, those ships are worth more than your lives, so bring them back in one piece.”

“Good luck to you newbie,” the technician says as he exits the cockpit. “I hope to see you in that seat again.”

You watch as the cargo bay doors seal and a voice comes over the general frequency “All pilots prepare to launch in… 5” You hear the fuel and oxygen lines detach from your ship. “4” the launch bay doors open “3” You fire up your engines and to your surprise they actually turn on “2” You check all of your gauges and everything looks to be good. “1” You tighten your grip on the stick. “Launch” You flick the switch and are thrown back in your seat as you are hurled out into space. You quickly test the ship’s control everything felt normal, the stick was a little stiff maybe but nothing worrisome.

Out your window you could see the drop pod ships firing their canisters of soldiers toward the planet. You follow your flight wing down to the planet and try to ignore the knots to twisting your stomach. Entry goes smoothly enough; your ship didn’t burn up. Below you the city smolder, you could see the some of the buildings had fallen over and smoke was creating a fine haze over the city. Soon, your radio lit up with requests for air support.

>“Econ team… need… help…Object… incomplete” The signal is screwed up, you need to get closer to and clean up the signal.

>“This is Lt. Selza my team is pinned down by a Repeater, we need assistance.” A Repeater is dangerous, but shouldn’t do too much to your ship.

>“This Echo Team 2 requesting resupply at…” A resupply would help lighten the load in your cargo bay.

“Echo Team 2 this is Flight 6 Wing 4, I hear you coming to you for resupply.” Respond to their request, lightening the load in your cargo bay might make this monstrosity of a ship just a little more maneuverable. “Copy Wing 4, the area is clear the window is wide open.”

You hear Wings 2 and 5 take the other calls as you speed over to the resupply point. When you arrive at the coordinates you see green smoke billowing up from what used to be a city park. Now charred and battle scarred. You set down in a cleared part of the park and drop the cargo doors. As the outside air rushes, in you can smell smoke and something else, something foul. Behind you in the cargo bay, you hear soldiers begin to unstrap some of the supplies.

You begin jumping between frequencies listening for calls for aid, but most of what you get is static, battle sounds, and callouts between squads. Making little head way you lean out the door between the cockpit and cargo bay. “How is it out there?” you ask

“It sucks,” comes the frank and honest reply from one of the men unloading a crate of ammo.

“Not what I meant. I mean where’s it suck the most.”

There is a massive thud as a Heavy Suit thuds into the bay and drags out an entire pallet of explosives. The suit’s owner answers your question “The fighting is worse towards the center of the city, around the governor’s headquarters there. The coup forces are centered around there trying to kill the governor and what’s left of his personal army. That’s where we’re heading to now. We’re gonna carve a path straight throu-.” Suddenly a loud *pang* echoes around the cargo hold and the Heavy Suit lurches to the left and falls over. There are a few quieter pangs before one of the troopers shouts “We’ve got hostiles,” and a couple of rounds ricochet around your hold.

“Gahh, fuck” the Heavy Suit moans as he rolls over, “They’ve got Railrifles” You catch a glimpse of where the shot had it the Suit. It was a dented and mangled wreck; you’re surprised the solider in it is even still alive. There is another *pang* this time the sound comes from your cockpit. Those bastards were shooting your ship. While undoubtedly this ship could take more than a few of those shots and would make good cover for the troopers out there, if the enemy hits something sensitive you might not be able to take off.

>Stay grounded, give your guys something to hide behind.

Heya QM! Can you elaborate more on our avionics? Like, do we have an RWR? FLIR? Do we have a radar system? If so, can it do air to air or only air to ground? Can we set our missiles to anti-radiation mode and go hunting for air defenses? Can we hover, or do we only have VTOL capabilities for short bursts like takeoff and landing? Do we have any electronic warfare gear? Sorry for all the questions, but I’m curious about what all we can do.
>>
>>3900962

I understand your curiosity, I would have filled you in earlier but didn't want to bore anyone with too much plane tech.

To answer your questions the ship does have RWR,FLIR,and a radar system that works with both air to air and air to ground threats.

Your Hellfire Rockets are unguided and for air to ground use, but your Bore Missiles can be set for to anti-radiation mode.

The ship can hover indefinitely as long as you have fuel and is quite maneuverable while doing so.

As for electronic warfare, that stuff is a little too expensive for G.M.S. to put on ships like yours.

Damn my accursed luck is still with me

Here's how the shot DC breaks down

ship armor coverage: 80
dodge chance: 0 (You’re currently sitting on the ground so no bonus)
Enemy accuracy bonus: -10
Shot DC: 70

Normally I would roll a 3d100 and take the average as the outcome, but crits and crit fails override everything.

Crits: Guaranteed hit and 1.5 * weapon damage
Crit Fail: Guaranteed miss and weapon jam

so i this case the Rail Rifle's normal 3 damage is now 5

Your ship's "health" was 10 now 5

Also since the shot slipped past the armor, one of your ships systems will be damaged, 2 hits to a system and it shuts down

1: Radar
2: Engines
3: Controls
4: Weapons Systems
5:Cockpit Controls

“I need to get this thing off the ground, pop smoke and get the hell out of my ship, or buckle in and get ready to fly ” You shout into the cargo hold as you close the blast shield over your window and prep to take off. As soon as the shield closes, the ships external camera’s turn on giving you a view of the outside. You see muzzle flashes emanating from the buildings to your west as well as a few lances of light from the occasional Railrifle shot.

Behind you in the cargo bay the troopers took your advice and were exiting the bay under a smokescreen, save for one who was attending to the Heavy Suit. “Ah what did they do to this thing it’s a mess? Crap they blew the servos for your right leg. I might be able to fix it, but you’ve got to hold still.”

“But the ships leaving, leave me here and help the others out.” The man in the suit says.

“Fuck that, I’m more useful fixing you than shooting. We’re strapping in.”

You start to bring the ship up when a Railrifle round slams into the cockpit making the whole ship shudder. The camera down by your guns goes out and your weapon control screen goes dark. You slam your fist down on the console and the screen comes back on, but the controls seem less responsive now. “You better be strapped in back there you shout into the cargo hold.” As you close the bay doors and finally take the ship up.

Now it’s time to they had a taste of what this ship could do. You turn the ships cams over to IR and examine the battlefield

Pick a target and weapon to use

Targets:
>The infantry on the road, they seem to be giving your ground troops the most trouble. (Enemy cover bonus: Low)
>The troops hiding in the store front on the left could be trouble if they setup. (Enemy cover bonus: Medium)
>Those assholes with the Railrifles in that apartment building need to die now (Enemy cover bonus: High)

Weapon:
>Gatling Canon [Low penetration, but good for shredding cover as well as infantry
>Hellfire Rockets (4 pods remaining) [Low penetration, Shots that bypass cover bonuses inflict extra damage)
>BORE Missile (2 remaining) [High penetration, requires lock-on meaning that the enemy will fire first]

Note: All pieces of cover and armor have a sturdiness rating that must be equaled or exceeded by a weapons penetration stat to deal damage to a target objects like doors and park benches have low sturdiness while reinforced concrete would have a High penetration rating.
>>
>>3901165

To help understand Sturdiness and Penetration here is an example

Your ships armor has coverage of 80 with a Sturdiness of Medium

A RailRifle has a damage of 3 and a Penetration of Low

So if an enemy shoots you with a Railrifle and their rolls are 80 or lower the shot will hit the armor and deflect off causing 0 damage.

If a ship has Low Sturdiness and a Railrifle hits it. The shot will pass through the armor and hit the target, but because the shot passed through the armor, its damage is lowered by 1 and its penetration decreases by 1 tier (from Low to None)
>>
>>3901165
>The infantry on the road, they seem to be giving your ground troops the most trouble. (Enemy cover bonus: Low

Then as we fly off >The troops hiding in the store front on the left could be trouble if they setup. (Enemy cover bonus: Medium

Can we do this?
And thabks for the info
>>
>>3901165
Target:
>Those assholes with the Railrifles in that apartment building need to die now (Enemy cover bonus: High)
Weapon:
>Hellfire Rockets (4 pods remaining) [Low penetration, Shots that bypass cover bonuses inflict extra damage)

If they’re in an apartment building, the structural damage from rockets should really fuck up their firing position. Even if we miss it will hopefully buy us time to suppress and maybe kill the infantry down low.

Plus, if we kill the rail rifles, our heavy suit infantry have a big advantage on the ground which they can leverage for immediate benefit.

Aiming down at the road, you open up with the Gatling Cannon hosing down the area in lead. Most of the enemy manages to find something to get behind, but the Cannon just chews through it and them until everything its way is mangled wreck. With their immediate threat taken care of, the ground troops reposition to better cover and prepare to move up, but they’re immediately stuck again as a Repeater opens up on them from the store front. Much like your Gatling Cannon the Repeater shreds any man not behind something sturdy and thanks to your efforts on the road, most of the men are. You are about to turn your guns to your next target when. A series of Railrifle rounds slam into your ship, but your armor holds and nothing gets thorough. Your armor plating does take some damage though.

You unload a pod of rockets at the storefront, but the pod must of have been misaligned. The rockets slam into the building and clear out the street in front of it, but the building is solidly constructed and with stands your barrage. You unload a second pod of rockets into the store front. This time hit your mark and rockets sail in through one of the stores windows. Smoke, dust, and debris explode out from every open door and crack in the building as the rockets go off. Then with something like a sad wheeze the store’s roof caves in sending more dust out of the windows, but no more Repeater rounds another volley of Railrifle rounds pockmarks your ship as you swing around to face the apartment complex. Below you, the ground troops, now free of Repeater suppression, are moving in on the apartment’s ground floor.

“How long is it going to take to fix the suit.” You ask interrupting the two bickering soldiers.

“I’m going to have to take the bust servo out of its mount, put a new one in, re-affix it, and then I’ve, gotta test th-”

“It’s going to take a while,” the man in the suit answers for his friend. “ Radio our team tell them Joey’s suit is on the fritz and Sam’s trying to fix it-” Joey is interrupted by a loud clang as Sam prys a chunk of metal free of the suit’s leg. “And he’s doing a shitty job of it, what the fuck are you doing trying to do, tear my leg off with the suit’s!”

“If you don’t shut up I’m going to be tearing off more than your leg.”

You close the door to the cockpit before their arguing resumes. “Echo Team 2 this is Wing 4, I’ve got your Heavy Suit, Joey and Sam up here with me they’re both safe, but the Heavy Suit is out of commission, Sam is trying to fix it but-” There is another loud clang from the cargo bay followed by a series of loud curses.

“Copy that Wing 4, we’ll get on without them, keep’em safe and if those two start making too much noise tell them Sergeant Raya will dock their pay and have them running laps around the ship in their undies.”

“Understood Team 2 good luck down there.”

As you return to the skies your radio pick up the reports from Wings 2 and 5. Lt. Selza’s Repeater problem was resolved without issue and Selza’s team was now making a good pace toward the city center. Wing 5’s report was much worse however. “Attention all wings this is Wing 5 the enemy has an operational LANCE battery. The Recon team assigned to it has taken heavy losses and failed take it out. You fly the ship lower using the nearby buildings as cover and rewarded with silence as whatever was locking on to you loses sight of you. “Wing 5 give us the LANCE’s coordinates” comes the voice of the Flight Commander’s over your radio. The coordinates come in and you realize you aren’t too far from the battery’s location. “I want all available wings to converge on the LANCE battery. It needs to come down if we are to continue giving air support.” The Flight Commander orders.

You as well as Wings 2 and 3 give confirmation on the orders and begin to close in on the LANCE battery. Gliding as gracefully as this monstrosity of a spacecraft can, you zip down main roads and side streets staying out of sight of the LANCE battery. As you close with the gun though, you start taking Railrifle fire from nearby buildings. Your ship’s armor soaks the damage and aquires another set of holes as you finally get eyes on the LANCE battery.

>Armor damaged, coverage bonus now 60

The weapon it’s self was massive at least as large as your whole ship and with wicked looking amounts of power cables running into its base. It is as you admire the gun that you notice several APS's set up around the gun to prevent any projectile from getting too close. It would seem that your plan to put a BORE Missile through the thing had hit a snag. You could try to clear out the APS's, but that would leave you open to getting cut down by the LANCE battery. You could try something crazy like getting extremely close to the gun and unloading on it, but that might end up with you getting caught in the blast from your own weapon. You are the first one here though it might be a better idea to wait for the other Wings to get here, but that would mean getting pounded by more Railrifles and your ship’s armor was starting to look like Swiss cheese.

You’re about to shout at him to get out of the cockpit when you suddenly stop and think better of it. Maybe you could use those two. “Do you think you two can shut that thing down?” you ask

Sam’s eyes bulge in surprise, then turn serious. He looks the LANCE up and down, then glances back into the cargo bay and a devilish grin forms on his face. “If you can get me and the big guy in close to that thing, I have an idea that might bring it down.”

“This is Wing 3 I have eyes on the LANCE battery, its covered in APS’s.” your comms squawks. Or you could use extreme fire power to clear the area either by sweeping out the APS’s or overwhelming the APS’s with rockets instead of risking your ass by getting in close.

As Wings 2 and 1 arrive, you lay out your plan for overwhelming the APS. There is a moment of silence as your plan hangs in the air before the Flight Commander voices his approval. “We’ll do it on my mark.” He says “Now everyone get in position.” All at once 4 ships rise up in to sensor range and begin to lock on to the LANCE. You sigh with some relief at the fact that even if the attack fails, at least the LANCE won’t hit you.

“Fire rockets!” The Flight Commander shouts.

You and 3 other ships loose a stream of rockets that as they enter the APS are shredded to bits

“Fire missiles!” 4 BORE Missiles streak out toward the LANCE trying to shoot the gap as the APS desperately try to clear the air.

Time seems to slow as you watch your missile shoot forward into the hail of rockets and APS countermeasures. The missile is pelted with the debris of destroyed rockets, but manages to shoot the gap and pass unharmed through the barrage of APS discharges and directly into the LANCE battery. The BORE Missile pierces deep into the gun before detonating in flash of light and flame. The LANCE discharges in a feeble attempt to hit its target, but the explosion of the missile had already thrown off its aim. A flash of purplish blue light scorches the air to the left of Wing 1 as the LANCE topples over and lands with a screeching crunch on the ground knocking out one of the APS’s.

With the LANCE down, you pull up and away from the wreckage, getting out of the effective range of the Railrifle’s firing at your ship. While you catch your breath, Captain Reynold comes over your comms again “Attention all Wings, the client has changed our mission parameters. He’s requesting an emergency bombardment of the city. So you’ve got 10 minutes to retrieve all ground forces and return to base before the sky comes down on you. Wish I could give you all more time, but the client wants the bombardment now, so get to it and get our troops out of there.”

There is a short pause before your comms. system is overloaded with requests for evac and the transmission of coordinates. It would seem the ground troops got a similar warning to yours. “Well you heard the man folks,” Your Flight Commander says, “Let’s set up some evac sites and get our guys out of here.” The FC quickly designates LZ’s for the all of you and broadcasts them to the ground troops. Unlike the last time you set down at an LZ, the area was actually clear and your ship didn’t gain any new holes as troops began to trickle into the area.

(1/2)
>>

Your cargo bay is rearranged and all of the remaining gear is stuffed into a corner to make room for all of the troops. During this shifting of supplies, an argument erupts “We are not risking our lives for these people there’s barely enough room for us on this ship.”

“So dump some of this cargo then, these people don’t deserve to die like this.”

“And we do? It will take too long to get them out of their holes, if we can convince them to leave at all. By the time we brought them back here the whole city would be nothing but craters. We aren’t going to kill ourselves for them.”

“These people deserve a fighting chance to escape. What if it were you and your family in hiding in these ruins?”

“I wouldn’t have been here in the first place I would have left the city as soon as the fighting started, as most of these people likely did. Anyone left here was either too cowardly, or stupid to flee, they deserve what’s coming.”

“You heartless bastard!”

A scuffle erupts and you take a moment to peek outside the cockpit to see what exactly the hell was going on. By the time you look, the two men had been pulled apart by the others.

“We still have five minutes we still save some people if we work fast.” The younger of the two men pleads to the other’s restraining him.

“Don’t be an idiot, if you go out there, there’s no way you’ll make it back in time.” The older one spits back.

>Keep silent, this argument is between those two.

“We leave as soon as the last squad gets here” You say trying to add some finality to your voice. “I was ordered to get you guys out of here before the bombardments starts and I will do just that and nothing more.”

The young solider gives you a nasty glare but holds his tongue, he knew when he was beaten. The tension begins to leave the air as you return to the cockpit and the soldiers pack themselves into the cargo bay. It takes three more minutes for the last of the squads to arrive and board the ship. As the last of them squeeze in, you close the bay doors and ascend up and out of the atmosphere. You’re halfway to the fleet, when the bombardment opens up. Streaks of light fly past you and toward the planet, the shells igniting in the atmosphere.

You fly into the hangar and land in one of the empty bays. As soon as you touch down, you open your cargo bay doors and let the flood of tightly packed soldiers spill out, while you power down your engines and the fuel and oxygen lines re-attach to your ship. You look out your cockpit window into the hangar to find utter chaos. All of the ground teams were still crowding the floor making it impossible for the hangar crews to get anywhere near the ships. You stare out at the mass of humanity piled in the hangar for a few moments before the speakers in the hangar screech to life, silencing the mob. “Good work out there everyone.” A woman’s voice rings out from the speakers. “You can all store your gear and relax your part of the job is done.” There is a collection of cheers from the assembled soldiers as they all push to exit the hangar. Over the din of the crowd, you catch the woman on the speakers next words “All senior officers are to report to the bridge for a debriefing and discussion of next steps.”

You wait a moment for the crush of people to thin a little before you exit your ship and head over to your locker to stow your flight suit and sidearm. Closing your locker door you notice the lockers next to yours were still empty and that the name plaques of the newbie pilots that had occupied them were gone as well. You also note a number of empty bays in the hanger. It would seem that not every pilot’s mission had gone as well as yours. Standing in one of the empty bays was a group of pilots and soldiers, as well as strangely dressed man and woman.

The woman was dressed in black robes studded with silver sequins that twinkled as she shifted. The man was dressed in robes of white with gold trim and patterns of orange and yellow swirling there way all over. From where you were standing, it sounded like the group was praying, no doubt for all the people lost today.

>Join them and pay your respects to the dead.
>Follow the rest of the crew into the ship. you need a drink and shower after today.
>Stick around the bay and help out the maintenance crews they no doubt need a hand.

When you offer your help to the maintenance crews, they burst out laughing and shrug you off, but when you offer again, the earnestness in your voice gives them pause. They look at you with a mix of disbelief and “is this man stupid” for bit before one of them finally realizes you’re still standing in front of them. “If you’re willing to help, then I guess follow me.” He says before leading you away from the other mechanics who continue to stare. “Sorry for the awkward introduction.” The man apologies, “It’s just that most of the fly boys don’t give two shits about what happens to their ships once their out of them. The name’s Marty by the way.” He extends a worn and greasy glove which you shake.

“Brett,” you return.

“Nice to meet you Brett, now I assume you don’t want to get those close coated in grease, so head to those lockers over there and grab a suit.” You do as Marty instructs and suit up while he fills a cart full of tools. He takes you over to one of the docked CAS ships and the two of you start stripping off the damaged armor plates. “Not bad Brett, you done this before?” Marty asks, watching you pull off a plate that had a large dent in the center.

“A little, I used to have my own ship, before I joined up.” You respond.

“Oh, what did you do before you joined up, haul freight?”

>Tell Marty the truth, there’s no harm in letting him know.

“No, I used to do some not entirely legal work until things went south.”

“Hiding from the law then, I get that.” Marty nods “I used to fix up old ships for a human trafficker until he got caught and I was going to be tried as an accomplice.” He turns away from you to gesture at one of the other mechanics. “Jim over there got caught in a drug sting but slipped the net by bashing a cop’s head in. Franky was semi-successful thief until he got caught trying to steal from a place with actual security. Noah is wanted for arson and destruction of property on at least three worlds, Hell over half of everyone in the fleet has got has a criminal record of some sort. Hm, makes me wonder. If you add up all the prison time the fleet owes, how many centuries would it be?”

Marty ponders his own question while you continue down the line of ships stripping off damaged armor plates. As you detach an absolutely ruined plate off one of the ships, you notice two men and two women enter the hangar. Their arguing easily carries across the room to your ears “I will not pay you another cent. You failed to meet my requirements and as such you do not meet the conditions for the second half of your payment.” Said the man in a crumpled business suit

“Governor if you will recall it was you who requested that we retrieve you and bombard the city. If you had waited like we told you, we would of have crushed the coup as we initially agreed.” The woman in a sharp looking military uniform responded trying to keep her tone neutral.

“If you had performed as well as you claimed, I wouldn’t have needed to leave.” The governor shot back

“If you had called upon us earlier we could have done more to save your sorry a-”The other man started to shout, but was cut off by the sharply dressed woman.

“Arguing is pointless. If you remember governor, the contract you signed with us only stipulated that we destroy the coup forces not save you or your city. As of this moment the coup’s main forces have been crushed under our bombardment and our strike teams are about to deal with their leader. We are about to fulfill our contract at which point you will pay us the amount we agreed upon. If you don’t we’ll have to find some other way to reimburse our losses. I wonder governor, how much would the coup be willing to pay for your capture and delivery? The woman says her tone icy cold.

The governor’s face pales and his eyes widen in fear as he tries to stammer a response, but the woman speaks before he can get a word out. “Gretta, would you escort the governor back to his quarters, he obviously needs time to consider his choices.”

“Right away Ma’am, Come governor” the hulking woman said placing a meaty hand on his shoulder and guiding him back into the ship.

The rest of your time in the hangar is much less eventful, but it isn’t long until the second shift crews arrive to replace you. “Hey Brett,” Marty says stepping out of his suit. “You joining us for drinks? The kitchen crew always saves some for us.”

“Nah, I’m pretty exhausted. I’m gonna call it day.”

“Suit yourself,” Marty says as he and the other maintenance guys head toward the canteen.

You make your way back to your quarters walking, then floating when the gravity cuts out in your section again. The lights were already out when you arrive at the room and some others had gone to bed out of either exhaustion or blacking out. Lying down, sleep takes you quickly and you plunge into its dark embrace.

You open your eyes to see light filtering in through swirling clouds of dust. The chalky air catches in your throat and you have to cough to clear it. In the room with you, you can see other shapes, other people cowering down, hiding in room’s dark corners. There is a loud thump and a door swings open casting more shafts of light into the room. A figure stands in the door shrouded by the light and dust. “C’mon we’ve got to get out of here.” The figure says extending his hand in your direction. You take the hand and the figure pulls you out the door. You find yourself standing planetside. In the sky above you, you can see streaks of light, like comets racing down and striking the ground with thunderous booms cause everything to shake. “Go, Go!” the voice shouts from behind you and you are shoved forward into the street. Down the street, you can see a ship with people being boarded on to it. You run, toward it, but your legs feel like they’re made of jelly and you can only move so fast. The closer you get to the ship, the faster people seem to board it, soon everyone is inside and the doors to the ship start to close. You shout for them to stop, to wait for you, but they offer you no clemency. The ship’s doors slam shut just as you reach them. You pound on the doors and scream at them to let you in, but the engines roar to life and you are blasted back by the chop as the ship takes off. The ship rises into the sky as the comets strike closer and the booms and shaking get worse. You let out one last shout before a comet streaks down striking on top of you.

You awake drenched in cold sweat, your heart racing out your chest, and your breath a ragged wheezing. You were still in your bed the sound of slow breathing emanating from all around. It was a dream you tell yourself, just a dream..

>Take a walk around the ship, some exercise will clear your head.

You climb down from your bunk and head to the canteen, some food will settle your roiling stomach and perhaps settle your mind. The canteen is mostly empty when you arrive, save for few second shift crew eating lunch. You must have looked terrible because, you don’t even have to say anything to the kitchen crew. They simply give you a sandwich and a cup of pink liquid that is thick, warm, and sweet. The food does help, with something to chew on your stomach settles down. Your mind however doesn’t settle as quickly, you find yourself getting lost staring at the steam rising off of your drink while your head keeps dredging up images and feelings from your dream. You are so entranced by your own thoughts that you jump when a hand touches your shoulder. You turn around to find a concerned looking man standing behind you. “You okay buddy?” he asks.

“Fine, I’m fine,” you say trying to shake the thoughts from your head.

“Are you sure, you don’t look too good?”

You look this man interrupting you up and down. He looked rather ordinary in his G.M.S. regs, save for the golden curls of hair spiraling out of his head and a golden sun amulet hanging around his neck. It suddenly clicks then, you recognize this man’s voice. He was the priest in white, saying prayers for the dead in the hangar.

“Yes I’m alright, I had some trouble sleeping is all. I don’t need a sermon.”

“Well lucky for you, I’m not the type to preach.” The man laughs as he takes a seat next to you. “So bad a dream is it, we get a lot of those around here, especially after missions like to today. Were you with the ground teams? No wait, you’re too clean to be a grunt, not enough scars. So a pilot then why don’t you tell me about this dream.”

>Oh great the priest is a shrink, you don’t need this, head back to bed.
>“Listen it was just a bad dream, nothing else. It wasn’t God trying to talk to me or anything like that.”

Giving in with a sigh, you tell the priest about the dream. He sits patiently and listens, hanging on your every word. When you finish, you feel strangely better. “It helps doesn’t it.” the priest says “talking about it I mean.”

“Yeah,” you respond feeling drained after everything you’d just told the priest. “It’s weird though, I’ve never had dreams like that before.”

“Well there’s a first time for everything. I’ve known soldiers who’ve served their whole contract and never had problems with nightmares or dreams. I’ve also known people who’ve broken down entirely and had terrors stalk their minds even in their waking hours. We all take the stresses of this line of work differently, but what’s important is that you find a way to relieve that stress. If you ever have more nightmares come find me, I’ll help you out. If you can’t find me though look for Mother Miriam she’s the Void Priestess on this ship. She’ll help you although she’s a little more religious than I am.”

The priest stands back up and starts to leave but you stop him. “Wait you never told me your name.”

“Oh, how stupid of me, I’m Brother Shaun.”

“Brett Kesel,”

“Nice talking with you Brett, have a good night’s rest.”

You return to your bunk and spend the rest of the night in blissful sleep.

The next morning as you enjoy your breakfast in the canteen, the ship’s speakers squawk to life. “ATTENTION ALL SHIP CREW, MISSION ROSTERS HAVE BEEN UPDATED. PLEASE-” You don’t hear the rest of the announcement as the entire canteen surges to its feet and to the large screens on the canteen wall. Joining the crowd you hear shouts of joy and loud swears as people discover their new assignments. While muscling your way forward in the crowd part of the announcement catches your ears “QUARTERMASTER OLEV WOULD LIKE TO REMIND ALL SHIP CREW TO TURN IN ALL REQUISTION FORMS BEFORE HE DEPARTS FOR RESUPPLY.” You finally ride the tide to the board and search it up and down for your name. You find it on a mission to…

So, what kind of mods do you guys think we should look for? Anything stealth related will probably be out of our price range for quite a while. Jamming pods would be nice, but are also probably expensive. We could probably afford a laser comms suite which would let us act as a secure communications relay in a pinch, like a mobile comms tower.

Just my personal take but since you don't own the fighter itself I would suggest just modding it with shit that increases survivability and strive to gain in rank so you can get a better fighter/gear through the internal "mercenary" system? Seems like a more reliable way to get stealthy/cooler upgrades. I don't know shit about space fightan outside x-wings though

You had stripped quite a number of ships of their armor yesterday, but they were far from back repaired when you left. Slightly concerned for the state of your ship, you make your way back to the hangar. In the hangar ships line the docks and most of them have their armor plates back on and look to be in full repair. You head down the line of ships looking for yours but it’s hard when every ship looks the same. You’re about to give up when you see a ship with a rather familiar looking hole in it near the nose. Sticking out of the familiar hole was a familiar set of legs. “How are the repairs coming Marty?” you ask the legs.

Twisting inside the nose, Marty peers out at you from the hole. “Mostly done, all of the lightly damaged ships are fixed. The only ones left are ships with system damage like this one. Wire” Marty gestures for a coil of wire on a nearby cart. After handing him the wire Marty goes on. “The shot that hit this one did a real number on the weapon systems.” A nearby pile of burned and tangled wires catches your eye as Marty throws a mess of shredded metal out of the hole “I’m surprised the guns even worked on this thing when it came in.”

“Can you fix it?” you ask becoming concerned.

“Oh, yeah, this is easy compared to some of the other shit that can break in these things. Now if the engines had been damaged this would’ve been a different story altogether, those things are a bitch to put back together. I swe-” There is a loud clang from inside the nose of the ship followed by Marty swearing “Sonofabitch, Brett could you do me a favor? Go to the quartermaster and tell him to send more connectors and fuel pipes for the CAS ships down here.”

It doesn’t take you too long to find the quartermaster’s office. No office was too generous, more like the quartermaster’s warehouse. Giant shelving units full of loose junk and boxes filled the massive room and were it not for a helpful clerk doing inventory, you'd never have navigated the maze of material in your way to find the quartermaster himself. The man was short, hairy, and filthy. The clothes he wore were so old, tattered, and dirty that you were afraid they’d fall apart at any moment and expose the horrors beneath. “What do ya need?” the man asks.

You deliver Marty’s message, but add “Do you have any stuff for those ships that isn’t standard, like other weapons or upgrades to their systems.”

“Kid,” the man says sucking at something caught in his teeth. “I’ll tell you the same thing I tell everyone who wants something special. You name it, I can get, as long as you’re willing to pay for it. Just fill out a form and I’ll give you price. I don’t haggle, what I ask for you’ll pay, before I get the goods. If I don’t have what you want in stock I’ll have it after the next supply run.” He says handing you a requisition form. “Fill that out and we’ll see what I can get for you. As for the stuff for maintenance crews.” The quartermaster shouts across the warehouse and a clerk comes rushing around the corner. “My clerk will get you what you need.”

While you follow the clerk to Marty’s parts you ponder over what to request.

All of the gear and even the ships you have access to are standard issue and going up in rank won't really get you access to better stuff, going up in rank might get you a little better pay, but not better gear.

At a certain rank though you will do less fighting and more coordinating forces, making money spent on gear rather pointless

Think of it this way anon, if we get shot in the controls, that means a shot in the cockpit, which means that controls going out are probably the least of our worries. I'd take an up-armored cockpit before extra redundancy in the flight controls.

But honestly if I had been around I would have voted to save 6 missions of dosh to buy an anti-ship laser and then a tracking AI and never miss another shot.

>System Redundancy: Cockpit Controls acquired

The quartermaster looks the requisition form up and down nodding and mumbling under numbers under his breath. “Yeah I can get you the parts won’t exactly be cheap but…” He scribbles a sum onto the form and hands it back to you. The parts will cost you most of your pay from the recent mission but if these parts will save your life, it will be worth it. You sign your name on the sheet and pass it back to the quartermaster. He nods and starts punching away at his computer a few seconds later he looks back to you “Alright the funds cleared,” he says to you then turning to the clerk he rattles off a list of components which the clerk quickly finds and loads on to a cart with the supplies for Marty. “Nice doing business with you.” The quartermaster says as you take the cart out of the warehouse.

When you get back to the hangar Marty’s eyes go wide at the stuff on the cart. He lets out a low whistle and starts fingering the parts for the cockpit controls. “This is some quality stuff way better than what he normally gives out. Tell me what put Olev in such a good mood that he sent this stuff down here?” he asks.

“Money, I paid for these parts, I want to reinforce the cockpit controls so that they aren’t held together by spit and electrical tape.” You respond.

“Oh,” Marty says his hands falling away from the equipment with disappointment.

“You’re welcome to help me install them.”

Marty perks up at your words but slyly says “If you help me finish the repairs on this, I’ll help you with the installation.”

“It’s a deal.” You and Marty quickly finish the repairs on the weapons systems before heading up into the cockpit to start hooking up the new stuff. With Marty’s help it doesn’t take too long for you to get the new parts in place. While you run diagnostics on the ship to test functionality after the installing the new wiring Marty asks “So, how much did these parts run you,”

“Most of my pay from the last mission.” You answer.

“Wow, well I hope they’re worth it then.” There is a short silence before Marty speaks again. “Do you have a family? I’m sorry if that question came out of the blue it’s just that a lot of the guys here send most of their mission pay home to family or drink it up at the bars or just save it up for when their contract finally ends, but you just dropped all of your pay on this stuff it makes me curious.”

We had Parents that died in a passenger crash with a freighter on a stop over to Nova on vacation. It was over some stupid incompetence of the freighter captain and the general lack of care and corruption of the local planetary traffic authority over Mathanese's Rock. Mathanese's Rock, aka Madrock is a semi arid rock/mountains planet with a large spaceport and mining operation that is constantly dipping into the red due to corruption and the local unions position off the profits. An official investigation into the incident was never formally completed due to the death of the investigation team on a shuttle take off, and has since been put on the back burner due to other more pressing matters such as the growing civil unrest and occasion insurrection occurring across the sector.

We have a few siblings, but none particularly close. The last time the whole family was together was at the posthumous funeral of your parents space funeral.

Then there is a kid of ours, allegedly. The ex-fiancee never really let us take a paternity test to make sure, and among other things such as wanting to settle in Albion IV (extremely expensive and far from our job) and helping her family over financial and legal issues, we just never agreed on anything and always argued. Last I ever saw of the boy was when I gave him a holovid of our family trip to Disney World in Sol back during happier times.

just felt like writing a bunch background lore randomly and mash em together.

“I don’t really have much of a family no. My parents are dead and I was never that close to my siblings. I almost got married, but she kept trying to use me to save her family from their own ruin. That combined the never ending arguments brought our relationship to an end, but not before she had a kid that’s supposedly mine. He’s a good one though, that kid. He was the only thing I would have taken out of that relationship. With what I was doing at the time though, it never would have worked.” You shake your head pulling yourself free from the mire of memories. “But as for the money, I’d rather spend some now so that I live to spend some later.” The console in beeps signaling the diagnostics completion, everything looked good and the ship was ready to go.

Just in time too, the briefing was in just a few minutes. “Thanks for the help Marty.”

“No problem, if you ever need more help just tap me on the shoulder.”

When you arrive at dock 47 there’s already a group of 6 people waiting. As you approach one of the men clears his throat “Alright, now that we’re all here, let’s get started. The mission this time is sabotage with a little assassination thrown in flavoring. We’re going to Asphodel, a lovely spacefaring scrapyard it’s residents call a city, at the behest of our unknown benefactor to kill this man, Robert Filmore.” The man says holding up a photo of your target, a balding, grey haired, whale of man, in a nice looking suit. “Mr. Filmore is a business man and politician who apparently pissed off the wrong person and is now hiding on Asphodel. Our client wants Mr. Filmore dead and the ship he owns blown to bits. Now with background out of the way it’s time for the game plan.

1.When we get to Asphodel we blend in and learn as much about Mr. Filmore as we can. Such as were he is, how many people are guarding him, and where his ship is docked.

2.Once we know what Mr. Filmore eats for breakfast and what he jerks off to at night. We regroup and share our fondness for him.

3.We find Mr. Filmore feed him some hot lead and wreck ship.
And lastly we get the hell out of there before anyone knows it was us. No questions good, now get your gear ready to go we leave tomorrow when the lights turn on.”

>>
>>3924959

The others all stand up and walk away, but as you turn to leave, the man who gave the briefing stops you “Hey flyboy come here a minute.” You stop and approach the man. “I have some questions for you. Firstly, how many missions have you flown?”

“One,” you answer truthfully.

The man’s eyes widen and he sighs heavily, “Okay that answers my other questions. So, I’m gonna be completely honest with you I don’t like you pilots. To me you’re all a bunch of spineless do nothings who get to sit all nice and cozy in your lounge chairs while the rest of us have to do the hard work. If I could I’d have one of my boys fly the mission but that ain’t things work out around her now is it. So, let me make one thing clear as soon as we leave those hangar doors and go to Asphodel, you will do as I say, when I say it, with absolutely no lip whatsoever. You follow that rule, we have nice simple mission, and everyone gets to go home. You don’t follow that rule I cut you loose, me and the boys will find our own way home, and you don’t get paid, Understand?

“As long as you understand that on my ship I’m the pilot and I will not have any backseat drivers while I’m flying.”

The man’s eyebrows shoot up at your remark, but he answers your question coolly “Cocky little shit ain’tcha. Alright we’ll keep our flying critics to ourselves, just don’t crash before we actually to the mission.” The man says dismissively as he walks toward the rest of the retreating team.

On your own again you start to prepare for the coming mission

OFFICIAL BRIEF
Mission Location: Asphodel – A collection of spacefaring vessels strapped together to form a mobile city. Asphodel is packaged as a resort for those looking for affordability rather that luxury, its tag line is “Let the rich have their Elysium, all the common man needs is his Asphodel”

Defenses: Most of the ships attached to Asphodel have been converted into casinos, hotels, bars, and brothels. The resort is not defenseless though. The outermost ships are armed with anti-ship weaponry and the central hull is protected by a shield. The entire place is akin to dreadnaught in terms of combat capability and several outrider ships add an extra layer of dissuasion for anyone looking to attack the place out right. Inside Asphodel, security forces and automated defense protect the ships from sabotage and anyone looking to rob the establishments within. Security is decently armed with gear comparable to G.M.S.’s own including a few Heavy Suits. (Note: due to Asphodel’s sometimes disreputable clientele, visitors are allowed to keep small arms on their person for protection. Customers may or may not be hindrances during the mission proceed with caution.)

The Target(s): Robert Filmore and his ship. Mr. Filmore is a business man and politician, who according to news sources from his home planet, may or may not have used bribery and blackmail to ascend the halls of power. Mr. Filmore is currently staying on Asphodel his whereabouts on Asphodel are unknown proceed with caution. The whereabouts of Mr. Filmore’s ship are also unknown save for that it is on Asphodel.

END

It looks like you’d have your work cut out for you on this mission taking into consideration the brief you decide your ship loadout.

G.M.S. provides 3 types of Missile to all pilots.

>Hellfire Rockets: Free firing rockets (4x shots per mount) [Penetration: Low, Damage: 4 + 3 if shot bypasses armor]
>Griffon 2 Missiles: Standard air to air lock-on missiles (4x shots per mount) [Penetration: Medium, Damage: 5]
>BORE Missiles: Air to ground lock-on missiles (2x shots per mount) [Penetration: High, Damage: 10]

So, we're basically here to drop off the dudes to do wet work and then extract them and get the fuck out of there if shit goes south, which probably means shooting at a lot of ships. There's not really any ground targets to shoot at unless we're planning to blow up the shield generator, but why would we?

Sorry for the short update, have some lore to fill the gap.

“Religion is the opiate of the masses” That saying is no less true thousands of years in the future. While the old religions of Earth are still alive and kicking, they find few converts among those who spend their lives out on colony worlds or amid the stars. A new religion calls to these intrepid explorers of space Cosmilianism, a polytheistic religion with a pantheon of deities tied to many aspects of the universe and nature. Believers of and priesthoods to these deities can be found all over human space, but no deities are as popular as the Void Mother, Urma and the Star Brother, Yaron who’s believers make up more the half of all Cosmilians.

As much as it pains you to spend more time with the leader of the strike team, you have a few more questions about what exactly you’d be doing on the mission and it would be nice to get to know the other members of the team. It takes you a while to actually track down the rest of the team and you don’t much find as stumble into them sitting in one of the observation decks. A few of them had their guns disassembled on the floor and were thoroughly cleaning them. Another was methodically sharpening his knife, while the rest were sitting around talking. The conversation halts as you enter.

“Oh, look who it is, our taxi driver. What do you want kid?” their leader said as you enter the room.

Brushing off his insults, you ask “I want to know more about how we plan to do this. Specifically what exactly you want me to do and what’s the plan if things go wrong.”

The man lets out a big sigh and throws his head back pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers. “If everything goes smoothly you will be a good little chauffeur and be our ride on to and off of Asphodel.”

“And if something goes wrong?” you prod.

“We adapt like we always do because nothing ever goes right.” You open your mouth to speak again, but he cuts you off. “Now listen, we could spend the next two days going over everything that could go wrong and how we’ll react to it. We could formulate a whole alphabet soup of plans to deal with every single contingency, but in the end all we’ll have accomplished, is tiring ourselves out and getting ourselves nervous about the mission. So take tip from a veteran and just relax, we have a plan A and we’ll improvise if things go wrong, that’s all you need to know. Now stop worrying and relax kid, you’re getting me worked up.”

>Leave, you’ve got your answer and it looks like any plans will have to come from you.
> “But you’ve got to have some kind of backup, I’d be stupid to go in there without more than one idea of how to get out.”

"Could you at least tell me what kind of munitions you want me to bring along." You ask.

The man looks at you like he’s about to burst and you know you’ve pushed him to the edge of his tolerance. “No,” he says trying to keep calm “Because I don’t know what the hell your ship can pack and because I am done talking about the damn mission.”

“Alright alright,” you say trying to step things back down. You sink down into an empty chair and try to take the man’s advice.

The leader picks up his drink off the table and takes a sip. “Now where were we, oh yeah so me and this other guy just ran for it. Just absolutely booked it out of there trying to out run these cops right…” As the leader continues his story, the atmosphere in the room cools back down. Listening to the team tell stories and bullshit, you pick up a few key details, namely that this group you’re taking out there is a team of veteran Recon troopers. Their leader, Riley has had a colorful past as a junkie, a burglar, a solider, an entrepreneur, and finally a mercenary. You also get the feeling that while none of these guys would exactly die for each other, there is large amount of mutually respect among them all.

You slowly start to relax and enjoy the conversations around you. You never realized how tense you were until now. As the evening drags on, you find yourself caught up in a discussion with…

>“Fling” the sharpshooter.

Quack was in his late forties, early fifties, an older guy with graying hair and stiffening joints. Age might have been slowing his body, but his mind was still sharp and quick. “So you’re the tech and medic? How’d you end up with both of those jobs?” you ask.

“Steady hands and bad eyes. Whether it’s wielding a scalpel, a soldering iron, or a gun you need you need to have steady hands. It’s just that to wield a gun you also need to see well. That’s why I get to do this and not be a sharpshooter like Fling.” He says cocking his head toward the team’s female sharpshooter Fling. “And since I’m not crazy I’m disqualified from working with explosives,” he says with chuckle and a nod toward Spark and Wire. “I guess you could say I’m uniquely qualified for my position.” He boasts straightening up some but wincing in pain before he could puff out his chest too much. “As long as my body holds out.”

“Don’t you have a retirement plan, I mean you don’t think you’ll be doing this forever.”

“Nope, this is it for me. The day I die is the day I retire.” You are taken aback by just how casually he says it. Seeing your distress Quack elaborates, “Look son, I came here for some excitement. I was tired of the day in day out, same old boring shit everyday life I had before. Nothing mattered then, I could have done nothing all day and gotten the same results. Here though, every day there’s something new and everything I do has an impact. I’d never give this up just so I could die quietly in some bed with a catheter up my dick, high on painkillers.”

You’d heard and seen people go through mid-life crises before, but no one who was doing what Quack was doing.

“Enough of this depressing stuff,” Quack said “We’re here to relax.”

“That’s something I don’t get, How can you guys just go in and do this stuff with no plan no nothing.”

“Don’t worry, we have a plan though most it is just, ‘improvise’. Look don’t let Riley get to you, the only reason he’s like this is because he’s nervous.”

“Really?”

“Oh, yeah I have to give him pills or he won’t be able to sleep tonight. It might seem like he’s negligent or that he doesn’t care, but that’s just because he doesn’t want fear to overtake him. You’ll see Riley will get his head on straight by the time we’re on site and once he’s down there he’ll be fine.”

“If you say so,”

You relax with the rest of the team for a little while longer, before making your excuse and heading off to bed tomorrow will be a big day…

The next day you wake up an hour before you’re supposed to meet. You run some final checks on the ship and stock some extra medical supplies along with some extra void gear. Slowly the recon team trickles in and starts stowing their gear in the cargo bay. When at last Riley arrives, you are given the go ahead to start takeoff procedures. From the cargo bay, Riley gives the mission run down a second time as you pull the ship out of the dock and into space. Checking the coordinates of your target again, you transmit your passage request. When your console gives a confirmatory beep, you then transmit your ID for clearance. You spend a long moment staring out into the star speckled darkness outside your window before your console beeps again. Your eyes catch it before your scanners do the subtle warping of stars off to your right, as if someone had punched a hole in a picture and crinkled the edges around the hole. Using your eyes and sensors you guide your ship toward the hole. As you approach the passage, your teeth start to tingle and itch and your hair stands on end. You’d been flying your ship through passages for years, but you’d never gotten used to this feeling. You clamp down on your tingling teeth as you pass through the event horizon and to the other side.

As the passage closes behind you the feelings dissipate and you start scanning for your target. It doesn’t take long for you to find it as it’s hard to hide and unholy abomination of ships smashed together and transmitting a welcome signal. The door to your cockpit opens and Riley steps in with rest of the team crowding the door for a look at Asphodel. “There she is, get a good look at her now boys, this is probably the last time we’ll be welcome here.”

The team ogles the resort with many apt. and crude remarks made about the thing’s shape. Suddenly your coms come to life “Approaching vessel this is Asphodel flight control please identify yourself.”

Riley takes the call before you’re able to respond “We’re just a couple mercs on leave Asphodel hoping to kick back and relax.” You raise an eyebrow at Riley’s lie, but your misgivings are proven false when the coms squawks back “Copy that, welcome to Asphodel folks head to docking tube D-9. Please note that large arms are not allowed on Asphodel and you will be screened upon your arrival. Would you like to make reservations for lodging?”

“No thanks,”

“Very well enjoy your stay.”

With that you approach your tube and connect it to your cargo doors. As the tube is pressurized Riley says “Alright people side arms only leave your gear here, we’re just what I said, couple of mercs on leave so walk around, have some fun, keep your eyes and ears open for our target, and don’t blow our cover. If you find him stay on him okay find out where he goes, what he’s like, and try to find out where his ship is. Whatever you do though don’t confront him, we’re just gathering info. for now.” Riley finishes just as the pressurization does. The cargo bay doors open and the team begins to move out.

“Hey pilot,” Riley calls at you “Why don’t you come with us, we need all the eyes we can get on this.”

>Take Riley up on his offer, the sooner this gets finished the better, plus staying on the ship’s likely to be very boring.
>Stay in the ship, you need to be ready for anything

We should probably rig some remote explosives hidden under the pilot's chair or something if we're leaving the ship, just as insurance.
