Welcome everyone!

This quest follows House Boggs, a small Knightly House of Crackclaw Point. We're approaching the fifth month of the Year 284. Robert's Rebellion has ended, and a new time of peace is upon the realm. For some at least. You’re playing as Ser Cormaic Boggs, Knight of the Boggwood. You’re a 20-year-old Knight with an emphasis on unconventional and cunning strategies You are the Head of your Household, though your small house holds little power and influence itself. It's time to change that.

Last thread, you fought some pirates, allied with House Velaryon, and returned home.

House resources and character sheets can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1C1EKKAiDasK3Rgq_UEjGL39i3XkFtbdU

I try to make a point of sending a tweet out when resuming here: https://twitter.com/CormaicB

“I’d sooner invest in training my men in other roles. If I’m to be limited on my number of men-at-arms by a frightful Crown, then I’d see those I have put to purpose,” you decide.

“You… want to invest coin in something that gains us no future coin,” Atia says in disbelief.

“Might as well listen to your lady wife and build a whorehouse seeing as those lads are going to get fucked either way. They can’t fight as is and you’d train them in other roles,” Barth mutters. “I sure hope there’s more to this plan that I can see.”

“They will fight when the time comes or they will die,” you say stubbornly.

“No,” Barth says sadly. “They’ll cut and run. They’ll leave the better men to do the dying. Seen it before and I reckon I’ll see it again soon enough.”

“You’ve so little faith in my men?” Ser Anders says with surprising protectiveness for one so new to command.

“Your boys are what they are. I can tell you who I do have faith in. Ser Dustin Brune. All this talk of Dyre Den and Claw Hollow. Fuck em. I’d wager they march together and take Pynewatch in a single night. Or else move on to those Valyrian nonces and their mercenaries if Hardy’s left any bones for them to chew on. Brownhollow though… they’ve four hundred men and not a single one of them gives a dusty fuck for fighting fair. Guerrillas, scouts, archers, more fucking guerrillas. More than like those evil fucking dogs Eustace breeds for good measure. Dustin’ll march em straight through the swamps and cut through those green boys like Valyrian Steel through a Valyrian. They’re as home in the deep parts as our own. Or near enough,” Barth remarks.

Ser Anders looks like he wants to retort, but thinks better of it when Ciara pats his leg.

“Everyone is licking their wounds. You know that. There will be time to bring them up to standard,” you point out.

“Aye. Might be you’ve the right of it. For the true fight, if it comes at all. And if they goad you into a scrap before all of that?” he challenges.

“I’m no Lord Cave.”

“True enough. In a sense. Know what they did to bring old Lord Cave out of his caves? One of Ser Dustin’s boys seduced one of his girls. Word got out in just the wrong way and shamed Cave. He comes out, looking to settle up man to man with his men at his back. Brownhollow boys provoke them into a scuffle,” he smacks his meaty palms together. “War. Just like that. Meaning no offense, but seems to me you’ve got a girl down in Pynewatch with as few friends as you. What happens when they take her? More fool them if they don’t give it an honest try.”
>>
Rolled 3, 1 = 4 (2d6)

>>3910815
“She’s not my girl,” you say tersely.

“Truly? Then you wouldn’t mind if I have a go at her,” he says lightly, watching your face all the while. At a flash of your eyes he continues. “What I thought. You’d go. Even if you’re not fucking her, you’d go all the same. You’re a sentimental one, Cormaic. We both know it. It’s a weakness.” He excuses himself in the silence that follows.

You want to curse him for a fool, but there’s a decent chance he’s right. Barth raised you as much as your own father did and knows you better than most. Sentimental… there’s a new word from him. Have you gone soft from your stay near the southron court? Is it married life? Fatherhood? This isn’t the time or place to seek answers…

You take a deep breath and motion for the rest to get on with it. “We’ve a housing issue to deal with. I’ve already heard word of a scuffle over the tower barracks. The hamlet only has beds to spare for one of your companies at most. Cormaic, I’m worried this will get out of hand if it’s not dealt with,” Ciara says.

Would you like to do something about this or leave it as is?
>Send a unit to the villa (which?)
>Leave it as is
>Other (take a trip somewhere with your men, etc)

Dice on this post are for how long the cross-training takes for your units. First is for the Badgers (support/engineers). Second is for the Bronzeguard (infantry/scouts). Halve the second roll because they’re green anyway.
>>
>>3910835
So the bronzeguard gets trained in 2 weeks?
>>
>>3910845
Why not? Start of the coming month. Sort of fitting as some used to be bowmen anyway from a fluff standpoint.
>>

Get our armor fixed and see if we can wrangle up a chat with Varys

>>3910874
I think the point is to leave asap to give them the space they need back at home so it doesn't ruin our house fortune rolls. I'd say stay around to get a routine checkup on our healing progress. Either Ciara or the Maester if he is here on time.
>>
>>3910865
>>3910874
>>3910886
It's mid-late month IV. The maester will be here at the beginning of month V. Your next house fortunes roll is month VI. If you leave shortly after meeting the maester, then that's good enough for me from a house fortunes stand point. If there are no other ideas or objections, then I'll get to it.
>>
>>3910916
That works for me.

We should spend the time we are here doing as much as we can to allay any concerns of our smallfolk.
>Have Ciara and Atia travel the domain conducting a charm offensive
>Have Bodger assure the people there will be no new taxes
And anything else we can think of.
>>
>>3911115
We are already doing that. With our uncle handling that with Ciara & Anders. Settling all the nonsense while making us look better as best they can.

“I’ll bring some men with me to King’s Landing. I’ve matters to attend to there anyway. This maester will be here soon, yes? I’ll stay long enough to gain a measure of him before departing. I expect this indiscipline to be resolved by my return or I will resolve it my way. Smallfolk and fighting men both,” you say eying Ciara and Anders respectively.

Atia wraps her arm in yours and you take the hint. “If there’s nothing else, I should think we are done here,” you say in dismissal.

Ciara and Anders leave with the shy Jeyne Plumm in tow. Their frustration is palpable, but you regret nothing. They need to rise to the occasion if they expect to be trusted with more responsibility. Tyrra takes to idly stalking along the edge of the tower at a distance to allow you to speak with your wife in relative privacy.

“You’re leaving me behind,” your wife states flatly.

“I am. With Ciara and this maester. I won’t risk the child coming on the voyage. Nor will I risk your health,” you say softly.

“I hate this. I hate this tower with its many steps. I hate these people who mock me so, even as they are fed and housed by the coin I bring them,” she says with tremulous voice. “I hate dealing in such petty coin. With but a single ship I’ve outstripped the earnings of this house many-fold times in the spice trade. I am meant for more than this. I know it.”

“You will have more,” you comfort her, knowing little else to say. By the look she gives you, you’re not so sure she believes you.

The next fortnight is as uneventful as it is frustrating. Ciara assures you that she’s making progress on the smallfolk with Bodger’s help, but it could just as well be her optimism. It’s hard to imagine your oafish cousin giving reassuring speeches. You suppose at the least none could think him dishonest or corrupt.

Ser Anders is having some commendable success in the Bronzeguard’s scout training with Ser Peter Plumm backing him up. You would judge the sorry lot almost passable if you had to. The Badgers will most certainly take longer given the more complicated nature of their training endeavors. Barth has kept his distance from you, no doubt for many reasons. He’s been hovering about the two young knights, no doubt telling them what to say to the fledgling company. Neither of them are accomplished scouts themselves, so that in part explains the success in training. It’s good the old man has at least opted to give Ciara’s husband a chance. If anything, the tension between the two of you may have fueled that. He doesn’t have it in him to be cross with both you and your sister.
>>
>>3911193
The arrival of the maester was a welcome break from the monotony of it all. You summon him up to the waiting room of your chambers upon word of his arrival. A slight man of perhaps thirty. He’s rather unremarkable in appearance aside from his unkempt golden hair. He offers an uncertain smile while fidgeting with his chain.

“An honor to meet you, ser. I am Maester Walton,” he says by way of introduction.

“Likewise, maester. Tell me more of yourself. I would know the man who’s to give me good and honest counsel,” you say.

“Well ser, I’m sure you’re already well aware of my academic areas of interest. I was recently recognized for my work in establishing the timelines of the migration of First Men houses of old prior to the coming of the Andals, with particular emphasis on those traversing the Riverlands. My birth house was House Erenford, bannermen to the Freys of the Crossing. I was fascinated to learn of your own house, given there is a second House Boggs upon the Neck. I am hoping to follow up my previous research by exploring the link there, if there is one of course,” he says. You’ve a feeling he could speak on the subject for days if you let him.

“Fascinating,” you repeat. “I’m sure you would also be well-versed in the healing arts. My lady wife is heavy with child and fears the birthing bed,” you change the subject to more pressing concerns.

“I’ve forged several silver links in medicine and healing. Your lady wife is in good care, I assure you,” he says, ruffling himself up.

“Pleased to hear it.”

“Ser, if I may, my order found it most peculiar that you so deliberately requested one with knowledge of the higher mysteries. I will admit to having a passion for the subject, or subjects rather, myself, but it is rare for such to be requested over what some may describe as more practical areas of expertise,” he ventures.

Would you like to discuss your brushes with the esoteric with him? I’ll remind for those less aware of the lore, maesters are honor-bound to serve their assigned houses, to keep their houses’ secrets and always give their best counsel.

“I assure you it wasn’t a simple request. My wife and I both have had experiences we could find no explanation for,” you explain it all, or as much as you can. Atia’s run-in with the Red Priest in her youth and her seeing your eyes in the flames, your experience with the White Heart of Whispers, your visions in flames of the campfire. The strange feeling of connectivity upon leaping the flames of your wedding night. He listens with rapt attention through it all.

“I do know of this Lord of Light of Essos. Visions in flames are consistent with what is written on their ways. I confess this connection you speak of is rather odd. I seek not to discount it, but it could have very well been no more than your strong feelings towards your lady wife. Whispers… hmm. Ser, simply put, magic as you would know it is all but gone from this world. There are traces, to be sure, echoes of the golden age if one knows where to look, but traces only. The Wall of the North, the House of the Undying, Valyria of old, Asshai-by-the-Shadow and beyond. All of these places are old places of power and traces of that power may yet remain. I would venture Whispers may very well be one of these places. If you were able to find the time, it would be good to revisit the site. Mayhaps I could gain greater understanding of its properties,” he explains with some awe.

“Then you believe me?” you ask.

“Believe you? Ser, I see no reason why you would conjure such a tale,” he says with a wry chuckle.

“Believe what?” Atia seems to have woken at last. She stretches languidly in your old Frey robe before plopping back down into the chair next to you. “Are you the maegi?”

He seems shocked by her appearance, likely not expecting a Valyrian woman in a Clawman’s bedchambers. “Maester. This is my wife, Lady Atia. She’s from Essos. Atia this is Maester Walton.”

“A pleasure to meet you, my lady. I’m afraid I am no practitioner of blood magic. However, you may be interested to know the word maegi is not rooted in what some may consider the darker arts. It actually means---”

“Wise. Common is my third language. Do you speak other tongues? I won’t have my child raised to be a simpleton like those boys bashing their skulls in out in the yard,” she asks.

He attempts some halting High Valyrian himself. Your own knowledge of the language is nearly nonexistent, so you’re forced to wait.

“Not bad. Your accent is grating, but that is to be expected. The Common tongue is so very… common. Too harsh and blunt. It is a poor foundation for more civilized tongues,” she says.

“I must admit, my speaking skills are quite lacking compared to be reading skills,” Maester Walton says abashed.

“We will work on it, yes? My reading could be better in any case,” she says with a yawn.

Stealth 2
Seems like we know what we will have Anders working on for a while. His fighting and stealth.
I only worry Tyrra will be the only one who can help him train his fighting skills. Unless he wants to fight multiple common fighters.
We may also want to pick him up some new equipment. Or the fucker got a nice dowry. He could buy some stuff he needs and we bring it back from kings landing.
>>
>>3911283
You end up leaving within two days for King’s Landing, looking to relieve some of the mounting tensions between your more favored elites and the rest of your men. A great deal of it is over the lack of space, but there are underlying territorial factions you’re aware of as well. Your lands may not be vast, but there are some distinctly different areas. The deep swamps that make up the southern portion are sparsely populated due to the harsh nature of life there. Virtually all of the remaining Sparrowhawks hail from this area, as does your mother. The remainder of your men are from the more densely populated rocky coasts, especially from the lands in and around Bodger’s hamlet. There’s been some rivalry going back longer than anyone knows between the two demi-regions, and the rare ascendancy of the “swamp dwellers” through skill of arms has become something of a sore point. Some space couldn’t hurt.

Ciara and Atia have been busying themselves with the curiosity of the new Maester. Ciara and Maester Walton seem to have struck up a quick mutual respect based around herbal and medicinal remedies. The three of them intend on visiting the hamlet together as a sign of solidarity. Even smallfolk should understand what maesters are and Ciara is still well-liked, so hopefully Atia will be more welcomed amongst such company. If not, Tyrra keeps blades for a reason.

You are getting tired of sailing upon these fat-bellied merchant cogs. Built to withstand the open sea and all that entails, they’re far more comfortable than the small yet swift war galleys, but it grates to be at the whims of merchant captains when you could be upon a vessel of your own beholden only to yourself.

After a few days’ travel, you arrive upon one of the many docks ringing the capital. You’ve several things to do while you’re here. You’d like to see your armor repaired even if it may be difficult to wear it yet and have brought it along for the occasion. Or rather your quiet page, Aurane, has carried it for you. You’d also like to check on the villa. The servants are likely keeping the place in fine enough condition, but Aodhan is still there with his wife. There’s a decent chance she’s given birth or will soon enough. As far as bigger concerns go, you also would like to check in on your sponsor, Varys, and the status of your petition to lordship.

What will you do first?

That’s it for tonight! As I briefly mentioned at the end of last thread, I will have guests over all weekend, so it’s unlikely I’ll be able to make a night of it until Monday. I’m hoping to be able to pop in occasionally and drop an update, but it’ll be a slow weekend overall.

So it looks like we will be losing alot of people and lives in the coming war? It doesn't seem like we will have a clear victory chance, we barely are reaching parity with just one of the houses.
>>
>>3911368
We are barely reaching parity with the WEAKEST house in the area. We need to consolidate our strength and use our allies to the best of our ability.
>>
>>3911385
Except from the Hardy's I doubt anyone else will have comparable troops of quality.

I think we'd win only if we outnumber our opponents at this time. I honestly think it would be better if we disbanded or converted the badgers into a combat force and have them abandon their support role.
>>
Hey Boggs are we getting a numbers bump for our army size if/when we become lord
>>
>>3911390
This is true. Which is why I think we should make the decision sooner rather than later. Both parties know what is coming. We don't want to be the aggressors on paper. And they are likely to antagonize us somehow with house Pyne.
>>3911395
Right now our problem is we can't house them. We get a bump once our Hall is finished.
>>
>>3911428
The other issue, is that we keep on trying to multi-role our units. You know the saying, Jack of all trades, master of none.

We should have dedicated infantry, and if we really want more stealthy units we should get guerillas or scouts, or guerilla scouts, or scouts that can wage gorrilla warfare.
>>
>>3911326
>Villa-> Armor-> Spider-> Court
Works for me.

>>3911390
>>3911385
That's what we get for being seduced by the possibility of a land grab and signing up with the Valyrians.
We always knew we were a lot weaker than the Brunes or the Crabbs and anyone could have predicted they'd be more at ease in our swamps than the Saltygars or Velaryons.

I'm firmly opposed to disbanding the badgers but I could support shifting some of their power to the bronzeguard, dropping the badgers to trained and bumping the bronzeguard to veteran. That would make the latter a serious threat in melee.

There's also the option of purchasing a saboteurs holding and using it to target the Brune's dogs. As a wealth holding the kennels would be easily destroyed and losing the hounds would make it that much easier for us to sneak through the woods.

>We should have dedicated infantry, and if we really want more stealthy units we should get guerillas or scouts, or guerilla scouts, or scouts that can wage gorrilla warfare.
But we can't. We don't have the space to house them or the legal standing to recruit that many more soldiers.
>>
>>3911428
No I meant the troop restrictions do we even have a restriction on our troops?

>>3911451
what do we need to do for more housing?
>>
>>3911451
Let me clarify, we raise the proper fighting force first, then raise the next unit at our earliest convenience. The other unit we need to figure out a way to hide them. Can Support units be made t not count to our unit cap if we say scatter them and have them heal the common folk as more like traveling groups of doctors?
>>
>>3911451
>wealth holding the kennels would be easily destroyed
That doesn't mean the ones already attached to a unit would be killed. I wouldn't think so at least. And if that your plan. We may be better off doing it ourselves.
>>3911453
We need a Hall. Which we are already building.
yeah, the King's restrictions only Bogg knows the details on that. And that seems messy, so good luck.

I am all for using some more wealth once we come upon it to purchase trained/vet infantry and raise them up a level. Seems like we really need it.
Narratively I don't think it makes sense to take power away from the support/engineer group to shuffle it around.
>>
>>3911453
>what do we need to do for more housing?
Finish the grand tower: 15 months away
Upgrade the hamlet to a small town: God knows how many months away, we can't even start that until we up our population to 20
Convince Maeve to let us barrack troops with her. That's only a temporary fix though, we don't want to bring her army recruitment drive to a halt just because we're pressed for space.
Build a trading inn. Costs 10 wealth and would take 6+1d6 months to start.

>>3911458
>Can Support units be made t not count to our unit cap if we say scatter them
That's already how we're housing them in the hamlet.
>>
>>3911471
Can always target the troops directly then. It's only a 12 difficulty cunning test to take out a power holding. Atia can handle that.
>>
>>3910815
>>3910835
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
After this update I really really want to do something else entirely with our men. No, not fuck them.
Making engineers out of badgers was a good move anyway. They are not a direct fighting force and benefit from an extra specialization.

I wish we could drop the scout training though (and I haven't voted for it either). Much better to spend it on veterancy. Is it too late, Boggs?

>>3911193
>This maester will be here soon, yes?
Cormaic adopting Atia's mannerisms?

>>3911295
Survival and awareness too come to mind.

>>3911480
Genius move to have our (recently) pregnant wife get involved in taking out a freaking kennels. Cormaic has Cunning 4, beating that DC handily on average.

>>3911478
>Convince Maeve to let us barrack troops with her. That's only a temporary fix though
Badgers will be able to construct temporary fortifications with housing.
>>
Btw, Boggs, Malroy engineers did dig out spike traps and whatnot with Warfare alone. What would be your verdict on letting ours do it as well without having Survival training?
>>
Did the maester look at our leg? Seriously Why does that keep getting neglected? Fuck man we are a cripple. Lets get ourselves killed so we can start over.
>>
>>3911528
>I wish we could drop the scout training though (and I haven't voted for it either). Much better to spend it on veterancy. Is it too late, Boggs?
Christ. We've had this conversation so many times. We've upgraded them now. I just want to stick with it.
It's only another 2 power to upgrade them to trained (or veteran if we shuffle some points from the Badgers).
>>
>>3911560
Doesn't make it any less a waste. "It is only 4 more wealth earlier spent on something else".

What Barth said is what this entire clueless stumbling about was really. We should've had that in-character conversation before the final vote honestly lol.

>group vote picked support (were short on power on generation)
>group vote picked light infantry (when we can house only 2 units anyway and don't need light infantry)
>trying to solve issues generated by previous votes
>group vote chooses to spend the entirety of cash for the moment on suboptimal upgrades
>NPC tells that we are fucked
>we are fucked
>hurf-durf lets hope for the best and make do

Lets get fucked, shall we? I mean, it is fair to have repercussions but I don't think the lesson will get into our collective heads.
>>
>>3911576
>Doesn't make it any less a waste.
Nah. There's plenty of reasons that unit needs stealth. Its a good move.
>>
>>3911580
Well, it does have 2 dice of stealth and can have the ambushing trait for +3 extra points (for yet more power expenditure), but will it matter against
>More than like those evil fucking dogs Eustace breeds for good measure.
?
We likely can terminate their scouts with sparrowhawks to leave positions of our less stealthy units secret but hounds?

Not a fan of the unit right now, as it doesn't do anything well.

Why do you think that it needs stealth? So that it can accompany our archers? Bronzeguard will still be very squishy, it won't hold.
>>
>>3911553
Supporting this - I think it is obviously something we would have done

Can we have a scene about it?
>>
>>3911395
You could ask for one, but it wouldn't be automatic. The number of people who would ever say, "hey you know who really should have more men? Cormaic Boggs" is very short.

>>3911458
I'm not going to stop you from trying to loophole and hide things, but you do so at your own risk. I will say that the obvious loophole that's been discussed before are banner houses. They don't count towards your restrictions at all.

>>3911528
It's too late to change the vote.

>Cormaic adopting Atia's mannerisms?
I'm glad you noticed.

>>3911535
I would be fine with engineers using warfare to lay spike traps around your holdings. That feels right. If you wanted to set up some cleverly disguised natural traps in the swamp then I'd want to use survival.

>>3911576
I honestly wasn't looking to have that as a part of the vote until you were given the chance IC to review your men. It was a vote on wealth holdings that was won by a write-in with more popularity than the holdings. I tried to at least give a breakdown of sorts and warned I wouldn't handwave opponents into incompetence from what I've already set them as far in advance. At this point I'd rather move on from unit votes, but you're all more than welcome to discuss what you'd like to do in the future. Maybe someone will come up with good plans to work with.

You did and its fair. We should've listened better, idk why it only struck me when Barth spelled it out.

>You could ask for one, but it wouldn't be automatic.
It is time to employ every cheap method to bolster our ranks unofficially. Hire mercs, get those barristers, maybe even offer to land somebody (after we do it for Anders of course). Break some bastards out of jail. We should tell Varys about our concerns.

>It was a vote on wealth holdings that was won by a write-in with more popularity than the holdings.
Yup, should have them separate. We haven't gotten any upgrades to our holding even.
>>
>>3911746
I think talking with Varyd should give us a clearer view of the things to come. Advice as he has been around for a while. Give us real advice. And real tips, potentially a way to gather these things.
>>
>>3911746
>Yup, should have them separate.
Wouldn't work, if resources are spent on power holdings then they can't be spent on wealth holdings.
>>

You're giving me ideas.
>>
>>3911784
Agreed it comes down to what the majority believe is best.
I still think we should get the greenhouse and veteran infantry/scouts + a warship
Talking strategy with Varys should help. Lets us know about any pawns on this board we have yet to know about.
>>
>>3911395
I think part of the problem there is we fought for the wrong side. Not to mention we publicly admitted to helping burn down a part of Gulltown. I doubt the crown is going to just change our limitation because we ask nicely, especially if they get wind of war on Crackclaw Point. We need to think of a clever idea to get back in the royal families good graces beyond paying lip service to Cersei if we want to increase our man power.

>We need to think of a clever idea to get back in the royal families good graces beyond paying lip service to Cersei if we want to increase our man power.
Who would've thunk that investing in survival (hunting) wasn't such a terrible idea.
>>

Not me. What kind of geurilla scout hillbilly from a backwater swamp who can shoot a bow like a damn fiend doesnt know how to hunt? It just. Doesnt. Make. Sense.
>>
>>3917647
I recall the opponent saying that survival is a shit ability.

In our defense, we know how to hunt (rank 3, track 1), just not exceptionally well. I still kinda want to become a royal jaegermeister but we already have a snowball worth of business big enough for three Cormaics.
>>
>>3917670
I am glad people get that so we are not scrambling every which way.

Rank 3 Talented
A cut above the common person, having rank 3 in an ability means you have a special knack and find tasks related to the ability to be far easier than other folks do. Talented can also imply a minimum amount of training, such as a few hours put in with the practice sword or having ridden a horse a few times in your life. Generally, rank 3 gives you just enough experience to be dangerous.

We are decently fine at it. We could likely find others in and around our lands in all likelihood. Unless it's an elite team but we've pretty badass awareness along with sparrowhawks. Our unit should do pretty well.

If people are still stuck with trying to curry favor with the king I just think we would be spreading ourselves to thin. We have Varys we will be working on that, we are working on Cersei and we've dozens over other things to worry about and focus on. We shouldn't try and add more to our plate lest we fuck everything up trying to do too much at once.

In your experience, there are many things about King’s Landing that make it more dangerous than most battlefields. It logically follows that this visit should be approached in the same way. Establish a base camp, prepare your weapons and armor, gather intelligence, and strike. As such, the first stop should be your villa. It’s a short trip from the northern docks ringing the capital and you end up taking your southron household by surprise as there was little reason to send ahead outriders.

You’ve been feeling a touch more comfortable ahorse than when last you rode here. According to Maester Walton, the bones would be setting back in place by now, so the worst of the pain should be behind you. He still recommended wearing the brace upon your bad leg for at least another four months so ensure the bones stay in place. He was impressed with the contraption Ciara came up with and soon took to pestering her for more details.

You’re greeted by Aodhan at the gates. He looks about the happiest you’ve ever seen him, and for good reason. His wife birthed a baby boy a few days past and both seem hale and hearty. You take to pestering him over names as he walks with you to your main study, knowing he won’t give you a straight answer. Most of your people don’t name their children before at least their first or second year of life. It’s considered bad luck, especially in the swamps, with the smallfolk thinking infants named too early more likely to die. It seems your friend keeps to those traditions. You’re not sure what you’ll do when the time comes to name your own heir. Somehow you can’t see Atia willing to wait.

“Your ‘friend’ stopped by,” Aodhan says after closing the door to the study. Varys. Aside from Atia, Aodhan is the only one who knows of your connection with the Spider. Knowledge gained when your life hung in the balance and your wife had need of at least one trustworthy man who could speak the common tongue better than her half-sister.
>>
>>3918327
“Hmm. Any details?” you ask.

“Only that he needed to talk on something ‘most urgent,’ his words,” Aodhan answers. “Suppose that may have something to do with the dragonseed you had following you in?”

“A Velaryon bastard. His brother being the lord there. He was gifted to me as a page. More like a favor to Lord Monford, really. Not sure on how many sisters the lord has, but this lad is high up on the succession either way until some real heirs start popping up,” you say.

“Velaryon? They approached you?” he asks you with curiosity.

“I approached them,” you respond before explaining the Brune situation.

“You signed on with the tax collectors? Most won’t like that,” Aodhan says with a frown.

“I suppose I’ve signed nothing yet. The only Celtigars I’ve met were ladies married off to Driftmark. I’ll need to meet with them again to put words to paper, but my word should be as good as any for now,” you explain. “Most won’t like it. Including you?”

“Doesn’t bother me none aside from that we can’t beat Brune and Crabb in a straight fight. I only think you should’ve killed that Pyne knight. Seems like a loose end to me,” he says.

“Lady Maeve assured me she had it handled. He’s either a half-brother or a cousin and I doubt he has the stomach for kin slaying,” you say.

“Seems to me he has the stomach to lie about a knighthood at least. Unless they’re handing those out easier than I thought,” he says with a frown.

On the subject, are you looking to knight Aodhan? We’ve talked about it a bit in previous threads.

>>
>>3918445
I dont remember his hesitating I may have missed that. What responsibilities do you think will be tacked onto his current duties?
I cant see why anyone would not want to be knighted in that time period. I may be missing something. But I cant come up with a reason for him to reject it. Even if he plans on quitting fighting and become a blacksmith. He could still carry his title I believe.
>>
>>3918467
I may have read to much into it.
He'd be expected too be all honorable and stuff, and havin to tolerating noble bs instead of the more commoner talk shit get hit. Then there's the expectation of having to protect and not kill women and children and "innocents". Probably has to attend court far more often and standing by, and having to settle the peace between smallfolk a his more official title probably demands.
This would be on top of having to take care of his woman and future family.
>>
>>3918477
That doesnt sound accurate at all. He isnt all of a sudden being landed.
He doesnt have to over see any smallfolk. Unless he is sent to put down resistance. There are plenty of "asshole" knights. Hell look at Merv. Not really a picture perfect knight and he married into a recognizable house.
I was also given the impression the clawpoint cared far less for these formalities.
>>
>>3918490
Don't know about Merv, but odds are he has family and power or skill backing up being an arse.

>I was also given the impression the clawpoint cared far less for these formalities.
Being knighted makes you more expected to act in a formal manner. Not necessarily a hard rule per say but knights are expected to act the part.

>Yes, here

“Ah, so you care about knighthood now?” you ask half in jest.

“It’s not all of that. I just think those that call themselves such should at least earn it,” he says uncomfortably.

“You’ve earned it. In fact, I do recall mentioning as much to you upon my deathbed. I wasn’t so poppy-drunk to forget,” you remind.

“I remember. Just didn’t want to bring it up,” he says quietly.

“Is your wife taking visitors yet?” you ask.

“Aye. Don’t see why not. She’s tougher than I am, I’d reckon. I was out for the archery tourney, but I saw the blood upon my return. I thought she’d died, but the midwife said it’s normal. Don’t see how,” he says with a shudder.

“Archery tourney?” you ask, keen to turn the subject from women’s troubles.

“Aye. In honor of the royal wedding. Seems they wanted to wait to take Dragonstone before hosting the big one. There was a joust and a melee as well, but I’m not fool enough to try my hand at all that. Shot about as well as I ever had, but the competition was like nothing I’ve seen before. Couldn’t even make it to the quarters if you can believe it. There was this big fellow with blackened skin wearing feathers. Queerest thing. He almost won the whole thing too, but some Valyrian snagged it from him. A Lord Malroy. Brynden I think his name was, by all the shouting,” he explains.

“Huh. Not sure I know that one. I’ve seen Malroys in the war camps, but none with a true Valyrian look about them. Explains why the Celtigars were looking towards them,” you say with some interest. “Wish I could’ve made it myself. It’s been too long since I’ve competed. Some other time… but don’t you go distracting me. I’m gonna call all the lads together and surprise your wife with a little ceremony. Go see she’s decent and all that,” you decide with a smile.

The new parents are set up in one of the larger rooms of the villa, but it’s still packed as your men pile in to offer congratulations and see their captain become a knight-captain. You recite the vows as solemnly as you think you’re expected to near the foot of the bed as Aodhan’s wife looks on while holding the small swaddled child, but the levity in the air is infectious. The Sparrowhawks cheer for their man as you finish up and they rush forward to embrace him and you both.
>>
>>3918500
Ser Aodhan is smiling despite his typically stoic demeanor, so it seems he’s enjoying the moment more than you think he expected to. There are plenty of professional soldiers who prefer to remain sergeants or squires for their entire careers, never seeking a higher place. You can respect that. You do respect that. Salt of the earth types like that are what keep morale high, but your friend here really was meant to be a little more and you feel it lends more prestige to your elites to be led by a knight even in your absence. The celebratory mood inevitably makes its way to the hall where a small impromptu feast is laid out in his honor. You spend the rest of the evening doing your very best to get him properly drunk while jesting and socializing with your men. A fine respite from the irritating issues you’ve dealt with of late.

The next morning has you waking with purpose upon your mind. You’re uncertain of your ability to fight in this breastplate for at least the next few months, but it still rankles you to leave it so damaged. It’s probably the only reason you’re still breathing. The issue, rather one issue with this thrice-damned city is the tendency for merchants to congregate amongst others selling similar wares. It’s as inconvenient as it is baffling. The vast majority of the blacksmiths truly talented in steel work in this city keep their shops far down in the southwest corner. That at least does make a bit of sense as the main tourney grounds on the outskirts of the city are also to the southwest. They likely get a fair share of business from all the knights who are in need of repairs or new arms after playing at war. The true issue is your own property is located just northeast of the city walls. This means you must travel through a large part of the city to reach your destination. Including Flea Bottom…

If you so choose, you can avoid all of that by going to Coppersmith’s Wynd instead. It’s much closer, but those smiths are more akin to jewelers if anything. Perhaps there’s a certain sense to having one so used to the finer details to repair your finer armor. Or not?

We need a repair the sooner the better less hassles here would be great. Not like we are literally carrying a hamlet's earnings for the year this time around. But I would just rather we have fewer issues. And if we need to add anything else to our armor they would have as anon put it "finer" touch.

>>
Not that I announced it, but the vote was really to see what sort of encounters you may have for the day.

>Coppersmith’s Wynd

It’s not a hard choice. Trudging through a good chunk of the city to the Street of Steel means passing the Sept of Baelor and Flea Bottom both. You’re not sure which sounds worse and don’t intend on seeking the answer. Coppersmith’s Wynd is much closer and you were impressed enough by the work done there for Atia’s nameday necklace.

It seems you and your men are developing some sort of reputation in this area. You’re all openly displaying the colors of your house. Would that your page was a few years older and could carry a standard for you if it garners this sort of reaction. A few women shout out to the men riding with you as you pass through the dockside hamlet on the way into town through the Dragon Gate. The catcalling continues upon the Street of Silk just before you reach Coppersmith’s Wynd. A smith you recognize from your previous venture upon this street beckons you over with some gusto.

“Seven blessins, ser! You come lookin for more jewel work, Tobor honored to ‘elp,” the man says with pride.

“Something of the sort. I’ve come seeking repairs to my armor,” you say, beckoning for your page, Aurane, to hand the breastplate over.

He looks it over muttering to himself for a short while. “Might be the finest piece I’ve seent meself. Not m’usual work, but I’d be honored, ser.”

“Honored?” you ask. This positive demeanor is at odds with the last time you saw the man.

“Aye, ser. You an yours are heroes round these parts. Standin’ up to them gangs an putting em right where they belongs. This damage from them I’d be happy to do my part in settin to rights meself. Free o’ charge,” he says.

You insist he take some coin regardless, but it’s a small amount compared to what you’d expected. Nothing worth considering. You get to talking with the man as he sets about his work. This street is still in what would be considered the better part of town, but apparently the gangs from Flea Bottom and elsewhere were emboldened by the war and took to demanding coin for protection from many of the merchants in this area. It’s still a problem, but far less so after you bled a good number of them, and the King rode down so many more. The finer political points of the whole affair were lost on these folk. You doubt they’d know of your hostile relations with the erstwhile Treasurer from Gulltown. For all they’re concerned, you came into the city and made bloody work of the organized crime upon principle or something of the like. A fine enough tale as far as you’re concerned.

“Thinkin’ this fine work’ll take a few hours yet. Not meanin’ to tell ya what’s to be doin’ ser, but seems like those lads o’ yours ‘ave the right idea,” he says with a nod towards your men who are chatting up nearby wenches. The Street of Silk doesn’t get its name from producing textiles, at least not what you’ve seen of it.

You notice one in particular eying you intently. She’s dressed in what you can recognize as a distinctly Dornish style and is plainly too expensive for your men to afford. Given all of this along with the way she’s gazing right at you, it’s safe to say she’s trying to get your attention specifically… is there more to this, or has she simply made you for the one with the right colored coin here? You could take her up on the implied offer and walk with her back to whichever establishment she uses. It may be worth your while or it may be some sort of trap. >Rolled 15 vs DC 12

Thinking it best not to be so obvious about your next move, you pass the word around to your men to take their leave and meet back near the smithy by the supper bell toll. It’s rather obvious where everyone is off to and you receive some knowing looks from your men as you make off towards the sultry Dornish woman, but you think you’ve done a decent job blending in with your pack of men at least. Aodhan follows you after telling Tristian to watch out for the others. You follow her sashaying at a slight distance while she keeps looking over her shoulder to make sure you’re still there. She stops in front of a well-kept yet nondescript building before entering.

And so, the two married men of your group enter what must be one of the finest brothels in the city. If it’s even a brothel… it’s hard to tell. Women of rare beauty are lounging about; a harp is playing somewhere; the furniture is both ornate and designed for comfort; a tantalizing aroma promising well-seasoned food wafts from a kitchen. You’re taken by the hand and led upstairs to a private room. Aodhan guards the door as you enter and make to take a seat upon a pile of cushions.

Your guide tsks at you. “Remove those boots first,” she says with a familiar accent.

You oblige, seeing little reason not to. She seats herself opposite you and removes her veil at last. As you suspected, she’s unquestionably Dornish. She would be considered beautiful if not for a prominent scar down the left side of her face. Still, she’s oddly familiar…

>2 Degrees of Success

“You are Camyla… one of Ynys’s girls… how…” you start.

“I am not so ugly to be forgotten. I do not know whether to be thankful or distressed,” she confirms bitterly. “I attempted to keep them back from my lady’s chambers and received this for my troubles,” she runs a hand down her face. “I was left for dead. Lucky, some may say.”

“What happened?” you ask hurriedly.

“I can’t say. I was busy bleeding on the floor. How is little Esme?” she asks.

“You know of her?”

“I kept my lady’s secrets. I still will, no need to worry,” she answers.

“Full of energy. She’s to learn water dancing if she so wishes it. She has a… tutor, you could say,” you say with a slight smile.

“My lady would have liked that,” she says with a pained smile. “I have two gifts for you in return. The first, names. Bordain, Clegane, Lorch, Payne. Those who caused all of this pain… under Lannister orders, to be sure. The second…”

She takes your hands in her own and gives you a locket with a sketch of Ynys inside. “I know not whether you’ve moved on. I see you’ve since married. Still, Esme should see her mother’s face some day. You should have it,” she says before standing and smoothing out her clothes. “As tempting as it may be to stay, my new sponsor awaits you,” she says by way of goodbye.

A plump matronly woman enters the room in her place, shutting the door daintily before speaking in yet another familiar voice. “Ser Cormaic. I had no inkling you had such exquisite tastes in establishments,” Lord Varys says with a titter.

A whore house? Surely my wife has enough stress with the baby coming.

Why the excess in bringing this about? Surely we could have met in other ways that won't cause murmured rumors of me frequenting such establishments?

I suppose this must be sufficiently important if we are meeting like this.

What are the chances of peace remaining in crack claw point with the recent alignments of alliances most recently?

What is the likelihood of the Brunes attacking first?

What of the crowns opinion should things come to blow?

Your thoughts on strategy and alliances?

How likely are other parties from any major banner houses or the crown likely to be involved.

Do you know of any houses or bannermen that would be willing to side with us or help?

Would you be willing to part with Camyla, would she be willing to come to my houses service? I could use more handmaidens for my house. I sorely lack the help they could provide for my sister or wife.

First and foremost we should focus our questions on the status, ability and loyalty of Lord Eustace and Lord Monford, as well as getting an opinion on who the crown is going to support if anybody in a dispute. The fact that both parties were Targaryen loyalists makes me think the crown likely won't be arsed one way or another but it's better safe than sorry. Also get an opinion if the crown is going to be less than thrilled with us for fighting so soon after being just brought back into the kings peace.

“A whorehouse? Really? You’ve met my wife. At least the disguise is impressive,” you state sardonically.

“I’m pleased to please, ser. Your wife? A lovely woman, to be sure. I have no doubt she would understand the situation. I believe I did state my need to meet was most urgent. Your abrupt departure was vexing. There is work to be done,” he says.

“I had alliances to see to, as you must know,” you explain your interactions with Clawmen and Valyrian alike to be sure he has the full picture.

“I must confess, I’m still quite unsure as to whether this was a stroke of brilliance or a complete folly. Perhaps it could be both. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that you’ve no hope of winning a battle against these houses, although perhaps we could still win the war,” he says ponderously.

“That has a certain appeal,” you offer to get him to continue. You’ve found he has a penchant for dangling enticing half-thoughts for others to seize upon, but you’d prefer to hear the rest first. This isn’t court.

“House Celtigar and House Velaryon are steadfast allies, this is true. They would be honor-bound to defend you if you were attacked outright and would gleefully respond in kind. It would be all the excuse they need to move without their liege-lord’s blessing. Conversely, I can’t fathom why the lords of the Point would ever attempt a raid upon the isles of your new allies. It could only end in their doom. So, we have our aggressors… or we would if not for the simple fact of your house and House Pyne being far more accessible and weaker besides. I can’t help but think the young Lady Maeve will be the spark to light this fire. Your lands and hers would be forfeit from the outbreak, to be sure, and the ensuing conflict would be a struggle to regain them. At least that is what I’m inclined to believe. I am no general, as we both can see,” he says with false modesty.

“The crown---”

“Would content itself with letting the whole dance play out to its conclusion before adjudicating over the rubble. I would be remiss if I didn’t remind that there isn’t a single party to this conflict that didn’t fight against our noble King Robert. The new regime has more important concerns than infighting amongst dragons,” he says tiredly. “This is precisely why I sought for you to prevent a conflict by balancing power upon the Point. Now your position is unfortunately as tenuous as ever. Lady Maeve’s even more so. Oh, but I won’t say this must be a blunder by any means. You just need something more to even the odds… a title would be most suitable.”
>>
>>3920645
“I do seek to petition for my lordship now that I’ve secured the needed backing for it,” you say.

“Indeed. But, if I may, what is it about the title of lord that matters so much?” he asks.

“Stable inheritance, pit and gallows, status,” you list.

“Power. Simple practicalities aside, it is all about power,” he answers. “My friend, I have been raised to the style of lord as well. Tell me, how many swords are sworn to me? Aside from your own, and even that is quite under the table.”

“As far as I can tell, none,” you respond.

“And say someone, anyone really, was to have me killed out of hand. What, pray tell, do you suppose would happen to that someone?” he asks sweetly.

“I would imagine they would be killed,” you say.

“Just so. That is power. I have both simultaneously no one and the entire realm at my back. I have no heirs or people to avenge me, but a blow struck against me is a blow stuck against the King himself. A useful arrangement, wouldn’t you agree? The lordship is but a styling compared to such. I should think a noteworthy position of your own would be just enough to keep all of our friends to the north away from each other’s necks until such a time as a more common foe may rear its head, even if we must invent one. That is, if you have the stomach for it,” he baits.

“What do you have in mind?” you ask with interest.

“Given your… unique reputation, I should think Lord Confessor would be a perfect fit for you. The position has been vacant for some time, but it could be filled easily enough. I believe it historically fell just beneath the King’s Justice, but our wise King saw fit to grant that position to a Lannister guard captain with no lordship of his own, so I suppose the two of you would more likely be regarded as on equal footing at worst. A Ser Ilyn Payne. A mute, but with your fearsome disposition, to be sure. He takes the heads, but you would need to occasionally take the confessions,” he explains.

“Torture,” you say.

“You cut straight to the worst of it, I fear. Ghastly business, but it matters not how a confession is obtained, only that it is obtained. All the better for everyone involved if they see the error of their ways the moment you open the door. In any case, you would only be expected to deal with the vilest of traitors and those of noble upbringing. The rest can be left to gaolers and undergaolers. As it so happens, I may be one of those undergaolers. It would be delightful to have more civilized company on the occasions where I find myself in such a role,” he says.
>>
>>3920646
“Nothing is free. What would I need to do for this?” you ask the obvious.

“Seek audience with the Queen and bring along your petition with you. State your intent to allow her quaint little plan to seat your lovely sister in your stead back in the lands you hail from. It isn’t as if you will have the time to manage trifling local affairs in addition to the more important work that we have ahead of us. I suspect you’ve already had a taste of the difficulties of doing both. Use your political backing as leverage to gain this position and the power that comes with it in addition to the hereditary title you so seek,” he counsels.

“You would have me give up my power after all of that work?” you ask.

“Far from it. I would have you gain more instead. You and I aren’t ones for such inelegant battles of the mere clanging of swords. Let those young hot-blooded knights of yours do that for you, if it is even needed. There are other battles best fought in the shadows. The cells beneath the Red Keep are overflowing with loyalists, or traitors depending on your disposition. Some are dull brutes best sent on to the wall or the block, but others have finer talents. Spycraft, sabotage. Use your newfound position to pluck out those that will best serve and put them to good use. This is the best offer I feel I can present you, for both of us,” he says.

What will it be? (Please respond to this post with your vote)

>Keep on your current conventional path
>Leave that for others, seek do things unconventionally as Lord Confessor

I have a lot to do tonight so this vote will be open until tomorrow. Happy to answer any questions until then. I didn’t forget about Camyla. It’ll be brought up in the update after the vote.

Brilliant! How the fuck did we stumble into this, lol

I love what you did, Boggs.

>Leave that for others, seek do things unconventionally as Lord Confessor
Cormaic becoming a full-fledged hawk to Varys' birds? Sign me up.
I think we can still be the de-facto leader behind this clique, while Ciara and Anders can play the lady and her knight in shining armor. Our people will even love them more for it.
>>
>>3920648
>Leave that for others, seek do things unconventionally as Lord Confessor

An unconventional path for an unconventional house. Plus I am sure our lady wife would love this course of action.
>>
>>3920671
So we swore to our wife that we would not murder anyone again, but is torture really any better than murder? I suppose my question is how is Atia going to react to us working in the black cells and torturing potentially innocent people?

Also, I'm assuming we would reside in the Villa? Or would we have accommodations in the Red Keep?
>>
>>3920697
I'll avoid speaking for Atia until it comes up in story, but as for:

>Also, I'm assuming we would reside in the Villa? Or would we have accommodations in the Red Keep?

Both. Though your accommodations in the Red Keep would be above the prison and not suited for a proper family. That said, they could stay elsewhere within the keep if spending the night after a feast or something to that effect.
>>
>>3920712
Mmmmmmhm.

>Keep on your current conventional path

Here's a thought though. Suggest Anders could take on the role of Lord Confessor? Let him go all Spanish Inquisition on the black cells.
>>
>>3920648
THIS IS NOT A VOTE
>Lord Confessor

I like this but there is big problem with Attias father. Our marriage was arranged so we would come to help him in case he needed it and bolster his fleet strength. How position of Lord Confessor would affect it?
>>
>>3920720
>Suggest Anders could take on the role of Lord Confessor?
These does not make least amount of sense
>>
>>3920720
Way too above his station.

>>3920723
I was trying to convey through Varys there that the day-to-day of it can often be left to the underlings that are already employed in the cells. Canonically there are times when the black cells, your responsibility, contain no prisoners at all. This job allows/requires you to travel at times. Short answer, you could meet your obligations on the Pentoshi front unless something big happens.

I also still intend on offering the option to purchase a ship unit either way. King's Landing isn't short on docks.
>>
>>3920648
>Leave that for others, seek do things unconventionally as Lord Confessor
This is a big vote boggsy and honestly it takes a lot of balls to offer an option like this, but frankly, I'm down to try something completely out of the ordinary for a qst protagonist. I support trying something new
>>
Payne though... I wonder if it was the very same Illyn Payne from >>3920215

Oh I'm with you there Anon, but her virtue is merciful and debates about how to handle her seem to run out of control very quickly.

I'm just expecting a shitshow when she finds out we're torturing people. Which is odd when I think about it because while Pentos may not be a "slave" city, but she has certainly been exposed to slavery.

Didn't we already have this discussion when we had the choice of making our sister a bannerhouse in the point while we took the villa?
We were all opposed to abandoning our home then. What's changed?

And what the fuck do we pass on to our child if we've given Boggwood to Ciara?
>>
>>3920648
>>Keep on your current conventional path
>>3920803
The thing that has changed is we are looking to get into war were we are outmanned severely. And this new position opens up a different quest in its own right.
But as he has said, we would be jumping into a position of power in the red keep. And not just some no-name lord. And with that bring's the power of the crown to keep others from marching on our lands and such.
>>
>>3920792
If Cormaic is to be his own man and escape from under of Atia's influence, he has to learn to compartmentalize. Be more like Mervyn in that regard, there are just some things a man has to do that his lady wife is better of oblivious.
He can sell it as the lesser evil, a mercy upon these poor men and women. Surely she will appreciate it.

>>3920821
>And what the fuck do we pass on to our child if we've given Boggwood to Ciara?
House Blackfyre? The entirety of Lopathis magistracy?
>>
>>3920836
>The entirety of Lopathis magistracy
She isn't even recognized as his daughter. She is simply a favorite bastard.
>House Blackfyre?
So much politicking will be needed there. To make it happen.
>Sell it as a lesser evil.
That you even have to sell it as a "lesser evil" tells you what it is.

While I like the option, I would prefer we lie in the bed we've made. And if we make it out of this winning we will be pretty banged up, but stronger for it.

I am fine with how either way turns out.
I just find it very suspicious that many of these votes are
1. 1 post posts.
2. All of a sudden more than average.
But should be a new and interesting plot. We could still gain lands, via claiming say the Whispers. Or politicking for the blackfyre house once our family has cleared some hurdles.

My ID changes all the time, but it’s always good to be suspicious on controversial votes

I actually don’t 100% like this path as I like managing lands in GoT games - but it’s something that’s never been done, which is interesting.

Plus plotting with former loyalists is a good way to tie into the blackfyre plot.

Are you painting it worse than it is, anon?
We are well-skilled for that kind of work and will benefit from the position. Atia meanwhile will enjoy being closer to the court and having more opportunities to play the game.
>>
>>3922103
The more suspicious thing would be a tripling and quadrupling of votes. Doesnt matter which vote went anywhere. Clearly some samefagging is going on. I would understand if it went from 2-4 to 4-8 if all if a sudden lurkers came out. But I'm just suspicious of it going from 2-4 per vote overnight we dont usually get more than 6 votes.
Look at the last two votes as an example.

>>3922154
The last 2 votes are >>3921896 and >>3921900
One of those posters has 11 posts, one has 1. So based on your sample size, about 50% would be either lurkers or samefags. I think 50% lurkers for a vote this important isn't unreasonable. Hell, I've only got 3 posts this thread (now 4)

Cormaic leans back in his seat deep in thought, the silence in the room is broken by the creaking sounds coming from the nearby walls and moans of pleasure. The smell of incense and perfume the permeates the room and distracts Comaics thoughts for a moment.

Minutes pass and the silence in the room grows while Varys patiently waits for an answer while he looks on to the man deep in thought. The silence is briefly broken when the man sitting in the chair exhales loudly. "Varys, everything I'd done to this point has been for my family and the future prosperity of my land, my people. I am connected to them in more than just blood and values, I am driven by them and the earth that bore my house and its name. Every step, every risk has been an attempt to plan for its future and security, its inheritors, my unborn children, and the promises I've made to my wife and people I care about. It is what drives me and makes me who I am in that regard. I cannot say so easily that I would give that all up after everything that has been sacrificed before me till now, to become someone that would have none of the roots in the soil that nurtures and drives my passions."

Varys was about to speak but pauses to make sure Cormaic was finished speaking. Seeing this, Cormaic continues.

"That is not to say that the offer is not tempting or to be dismissed lightly. It is a cleverly thought out political maneuver, and would advance your plans while keeping my house safe, but I'm not sure I could be satisfied with that future, nor my wife or my household."

>Leave that for others, seek do things unconventionally as Lord Confessor

You lean back in your plush chair, weighing your options. A more difficult task than strictly necessary considering the heady aromas wafting under the door and the muffled sounds of passion from elsewhere in the establishment. It’s difficult to imagine willingly giving up assets as tangible as lands and arms, but what is for the taking here… No one of your house has ever aspired to rise this high. Granted, it’s not the Small Council, but it will bring a certain prestige. There must be a thousand lords at least and yet there can only be one Lord Confessor.

“Lord Varys, everything I'd done to this point has been for my family and the future prosperity of my land, my people. Every step, every risk has been an attempt to plan for its future and security, its inheritors, my unborn children, and the promises I've made to my wife and people I care about. I cannot say so easily that I would give that all up after everything that has been sacrificed before me till now, to become someone that would have none of the roots in the soil that nurtures and drives me… and yet I am inclined to agree with your proposal,” you decide. “I don’t do this lightly, but I trust you have the right of it in suggesting this is the best for all concerned.”

“I am moved by your trust in this, ser. I am sure you will not regret it. Allow me some time to plant the right songs in the right ears and your ascension will be assured. Not much time, to be sure. In truth, I would have liked to have more time to whisper my whispers, but alas we must move before our assets slip through our grasp. The prisoners,” he adds at your raised brow. “They’ve been watched closely and sorted based upon their particular talents. They will be disposed of one way or another. As you may have gathered, Lord Tywin Lannister was far less gracious in his victory, as it were, than the Baratheons. He condemned highborn and lowborn prisoners alike. The sentence was almost universally death, but he was since convinced that allowing the Night’s Watch to make their rounds would be a suitable alternative that still avoids mistaking him for someone merciful.”

“I assume you intend for some of them to be out of their cells before the Night’s Watch arrives?” you venture.

“Just so. You would be in the perfect position to ensure a few choice prisoners are put to better use than they would be in the frigid far north. The chaos of the power shift has led to questionable accountability in the crowded cells. Those so chosen would be yours to do with as you see fit. Of course, we can’t simply pluck out all of those of worth as this would draw suspicion. I leave it to you to decide which skillsets you would like me to focus on recruiting,” he says.
>>
>>3924510

I want to agree with you. But we want to be able to have our own line of information.
We should also be the ones to get our hands dirty as we see fit.
We hear of our enemies plotting against us, buying weapons and such. We raid the trade and take the money and weapons. Get into a town and carry out an assassination or two as needed.

I still think we could profit immensely by keeping our nose in our house's business with their war. And claiming lands. Potentially expanding bogwood another domain. And claiming 1 - 3 for the "Main branch" alongside our villa house.
I say we keep the profits from the pearls as the Tax as their liege lord. Ander's will have a Maester? Or will he come with us?

New Rule: The Law rating of the House is increased by
+10 phantom points, solely for the purpose of determining
its effects on House Fortune rolls.
Resource Loss Mitigation: Wealth +1. Each time this
bonus is used, however, reduce the House’s Law Resource
rating by 1 as well.
Other Rule: Should the House’s Law rise above 31,
this Holding ceases to function. From that point on, every House Fortune roll that results in a reduction removes
points from Law first. This continues until the Law rating
drops to a level where this Holding can function at again,
or until the House simply allows the Wealth invested into
this Holding to disappear entirely, subtracting that amount
from the House’s Wealth rating

Mechanically speaking they don't really do anything. And by rules they won't be able to work properly in our lands (and probably lands of our neighbours) because of high LAW.
>>
>>3925187
Do you know with this last vote we just gave up our lands? And clearly these days King's landing isn't so secure.
I mean, I could still see us getting criminal syndicate. But it may have to be tweaked a little. As lord confessor, we would know who's doing what when.
My point is these are things we are going to have to think differently. We are going to be doing our thing in the Capital. Not our backwater hamlet.
>>
>>3924634
The poison idea is neat and I would be down to flesh them out that way.

>>3924602
You're keeping the maester and we will have a vote for a pearl tithe when it fits in the story to do so.

>>3924707
Sure, that's fair with a big change like this. It's to ensure the Queen's backing by placing a Westerlander in a position of power. Cersei is a vain creature. Busy little birds won't have the time to properly manage somewhat distant lands anyway.

>>3925099
Yup, I would allow a barrister. You'll have opportunities to upgrade the holdings with things like "expert" later.

You're spot on in that I was inspired to include smugglers because of the criminal syndicate entry, but it will likely function much differently than the OOSP entry. Less of a mechanical concern and more of a question of imaginative use like the other 3 named options.

>Assassins
>Smugglers

“We both know our respective strengths and weaknesses, my lord. I feel it best for me to emphasize mine for now. I’m good at killing, but my efforts would be improved by more unique talents in that area. Someone subtle, of course,” you start.

“A wise decision. It grieves me that such methods may be necessary and yet it is still best to be prepared. I may have leads in that regard if you are so inclined to become even more fearsome, but I must caution you to only choose one of the candidates. These types don’t tend to play well with others and releasing more than one would draw undue suspicion,” he says while wringing his hands.

“I also find myself in need of a good smuggler. I still intend on docking at least one warship here soon and such a talent may help me move at sea as I do on land. Or at least make the attempt. It’s also clear to me we have a pirate problem in this area and smuggler types may be able to help sniff them out,” you add.

“Ah yes, I do believe Lord Tywin did see some of such ill-repute rounded up on suspicion of aiding in the escape of to last Targaryens. It was impossible to judge innocence or guilt in all of the chaos, so it seems a general arrest order sufficed in seeking justice. A touch blunt, but it is not my place to question the father of the Queen,” he says with a smirk.

“One more thing. Camyla.”

“She hinted she is in your employ now. I would like her to be in mine. It’s clear she cared deeply for Ynys and still cares for my daughter. Obviously, she can keep a secret as well,” you state.

“I’m afraid not, my friend. For all of the reasons you’ve listed, I cannot grant you this favor. She is important to some delicate tasks as of late and I would be loath to part with her. Even so, for you I could have perhaps made an exception… if it made sense to. However, her sentimental bend is a weakness, particularly so for the tasks she is so immersed in. I would not seek to feed it and risk her becoming more liability than asset,” he says uncomfortably.

You cock your head to the side as you consider him. “You’re smarter than this,” you state flatly.

“I beg your pardon?” he says with surprise.

“You have many and more in your employ and yet you choose to use a woman with a connection to my past who was dead and forgotten as far as I knew. As far as I can see, that is one of two things: a sloppy coincidence or some sort of message. Or a sloppy message, I suppose… so which is it?” you ask bluntly.

He’s silent for some time. Longer than he normally would be when he is attempting to appear dramatic. “You had pressed me before for details on Lady Ynys’s fate. “I would remind you of the position I accepted but moments ago. I don’t seek to intimidate you, but I still seek answers. Answers I’m convinced you are able to provide if you so choose to. You describe us as allies, friends even, but I’m not seeing the trust,” you press.

He sighs tiredly. “I appreciate your restraint, ser, truly. However, you ask me to provide you with answers that I am simply not able to provide. Not with true certainty and not without great risk to others. I can at least say that there will soon come a time upon which all will be revealed, for good or ill,” he says at last.

“So be it,” you say with narrowed eyes.

“I would expect you to have an audience within a month’s time. A mere formality to be sure. It would be just in time for the birth of your child, I should think. Your heir, that is,” he coughs politely. “Until then, I imagine you have affairs you would like to set in order.”

A month is enough time for you to settle this shipping affair. You could find a local supplier, although your options may be more limited, or you could even take a quick jaunt across the narrow sea for a warship more suited to the open seas rather than just the coastlines.

I don't understand the intent for getting shallow waters galleys which won't work towards fulfilling our obligations to the magister. Why get them at all? Are we under some kind of immediate naval threat?

>>
>>3930302
Can we check out and speak to the local builder at least?

I want to commission ships from both of them, and figure since it would be paid per ship, we could get ships from two ship yards, more ship yards means more ships faster. Plus we may be able to lower the price if we have them compete little.

I was thinking 2-6 ships locally, 18 of the larger ships from "a better ship builder.

Okay I think it's safe to call it for seeking a local builder. I'm working on the stats for different types of ships right now. As I've mentioned, this system is woefully lacking in that area so I'm basically making my own homebrew for naval combat and ships in general. Just so I know what to focus on finishing up first, I'm going to put it to a vote on which category of ship we will be seeking. There will be sub-options later.

>Brown Water
Ships meant more for costal defense and occasionally offense. They're not meant for sustained open seas operations. They vary greatly in size and strength and typically favor melee tactics such as ramming and boarding with some rare exceptions.

>Blue Water
Ships capable of sustained operations on the open sea. These tend to be larger ships overall. They tend to focus more on ranged attacks than ramming tactics.

Okay, I'm going to put this up early so there is more time for people to vote on it. These two options are what would be available here. I’m putting everything in terms of wealth because we know how this is going to be paid for. Also, I’ve factored in the discounts from your Pentoshi arrangement and the crew you already have on hand.

>Frigates
4 wealth for a trained vessel
Long and sleek two-decked galleasses, these are more formidable than the common galley and are suitable for extended trips at sea. They are still susceptible to ramming tactics from the smaller ships. They are still outclassed by any true dromond of war. 2-3 Frigates would be approximately equivalent to 5 Galleys. Can adequately transport an additional 40 fighting men.

>Grand Galleass
10 wealth for a trained vessel
Lord of the Seas. A status symbol and vanity project all in one. A long and sleek three-decked vessel comfortable for long voyages. Even the average war dromond would likely balk at engaging a flag ship of this size, though an upsized Great Dromond like those flagships of the great naval houses would likely savor the opportunity to ram. 1 of these ships can fight against 5 Galleys on relatively equal footing. Can adequately transport an additional 100 fighting men.

Atia's calling to making money, we could use this ship. Best believe no one will be attacking us randomly. I'd rather we adventure with our wife for a couple months out of the year, making money trading with her and fighting pirates. When we are not busy scheming with Varys and doing our job as lord Confessor.
And best believe I'm sure Atia would appreciate a comfortable ride.

“I must admit, you may have inadvertently simplified my business here in the capital. I had expected to spend far too much time at court and it now seems you will be handling that for me,” you say with uncharacteristic cheerfulness at the change in circumstances. “I suppose I may as well pass the time with commissioning the ship I’ve been envisioning.”

“Oh? This would be for all of that business with my dear magisters and their squabbles. Yes, that is all rather messy. Oh but do tell. I would be interested to know what you have in mind,” he says with fingers steepled.

“It would have to be seaworthy, to be sure. Not one of those shitbucket galleys I hear houses like to brag about owning. Hell, even the dromond I captured wasn’t quite up to what I feel it could’ve been,” you muse.

“Mmm, I do believe the crown outsourced production of vessels meeting your rather vague criteria to Duskendale. Of course, many of those same ships weren’t needed in the end and production mostly halted. I would suggest seeking out their shipwrights. They should be able to meet your demands and if not, then we know who not to seek further business with,” he says with a dramatic shrug.

“I’ll do that. Is there anything else?” you ask.

“As it happens, yes. I have heard unusual whispers about that particular area. Nothing to be certain of… but disturbing nonetheless. To avoid misdirecting you, I am hesitant to say more aside from a caution to look out for smugglers,” he says with a perturbed frown. “Find out what you can, and we will move on from there.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” you acknowledge.

The sun is beginning to set as you make your exit. Camyla was nowhere to be seen, but that’s hardly a surprise. The breastplate looks as good as new when you retrieve it from the smith, Tobor he calls himself. It was a point of pride for him that he even managed to repair or replace one of the four jeweled flowers upon the front plate that was damaged by that Pisswater brute’s maul. You still end up having to wait a short time as your men funnel back in from their dalliances. At least they’re all present. One advantage of disciplined elites is the lack of a need to form search parties for them after an afternoon outing.

You fear Ser Anders will have his work cut out for him on that front. Still, better to be liege over a mess than merely captain of a mess. It nearly goes without saying that the Sparrowhawks will be accompanying you in your new duties, but you’ll be taking Maester Walton with you to your villa as well. In truth, you’re not sure Ser Anders and Ciara would even qualify for a maester of their own by the Citadels nebulous standards.

That really only leaves the question of your pearls. A tithe of some sort wouldn’t be out of the question. While it is within your power to do so, taking everything would leave the house destitute and would stifle future growth. Future growth that is still ultimately at your command. However, taking half would be suitable to both of your needs. You were getting by just fine on what will be half of their production soon enough. Of course, it would have to wait six months either way because of the trade obligations you’ve put in place, but even that still benefits you. The sooner the tower project is completed is the sooner your new bannermen may see to expanding their men under arms, who must answer your own call to arms if you so desire. If you were in the mood to be exceedingly kind, you could allow them to keep all of the harvested pearls. You will likely be given a stipend of your own from the Crown and Atia has a knack for conjuring gold from nothingness.

And they say his heart grew three sizes that day…

It only seems fair to split the harvest evenly. You could lord on over how it is your birthright, but Ciara is close enough to the mark for that to seem petty. Still, the current harvest increased during your direct leadership and with the investment of coin you brought into the house’s coffers through your wartime success and your marriage, though Barth still bemoans the injustice of you getting paid to bed your wife.

You take the ride to Duskendale with half your men. It takes nearly two days at a casual pace, but it seems you do have the time to spare, dicing for watch shifts rather than fretting over pushing your mounts harder than needed. All the better as you’re unsure how well you would be able to stand hard riding in your state of recovery. It was disappointing to come to the realization of just how off-balance you are wearing your plate breastplate in your current form. This damned brace needs to go, but it will likely need to remain for another two or three moons.

This must be the third time you’ve ridden this stretch of the Rosby Road since the end of the war, but it still fills you with some regret for what has been lost. It isn’t as if the countryside is aflame at this point, but the remnants of hovels and homes are still evident to one with your tendency towards observation. The large town of Duskendale wasn’t spared the ravages of victors either. The town itself is ringed with formidable curtain walls with patches of discoloration. If you remember correctly, this was where King Aerys was held hostage a few years back. Lord Tywin Lannister was still Hand then, and even he seemed merciful compared to what you’ve heard of the wrath of his rescued liege. House Darklyn used to hold these lands. There is no such house today. Several other minor houses rose and fall in the aftermath of the Defiance of Duskendale, though you can make no claim to knowing more than the most basic of details about them.

You and your men are let through a gatehouse of the curtain wall in short order after a shout stating an intent on shipbuilding business. Not that you think they could’ve barred you to begin with. The gate itself is smashed in and the guardsmen look to mostly be the too young and the too old. Small wonder, really. Whoever took ownership of all of this would’ve been raised to it by the Targaryens and as such would have been honor-bound to fight even harder for their benefactors. Not that it would be much consolation to the families of the obvious demographic of fighting men currently absent.

You decide to make for the inn. You and your men may be perfectly comfortable bedding down on the open road, but a warm meal and some ale is always welcome. It’s a bit late in the day anyway. The castle is a tempting sight, but your general lack of knowledge of who rules from it, let alone the other minor holdfasts you’ve seen in the area, makes you hesitant to impose without real cause. At least you had something enticing for the Velaryons…

You stable your mounts and walk down the cobblestone street to the nearby inn with its seven wooden swords swinging in the summer breeze. An adjacent sign names the establishment as Seven Swords. Creative. You walk through the door and…

The first thing you notice is the sudden abrupt silence at your presence. A singer stops mid-verse, a harpist does the same with an inelegant twang, huddled conversations trail off, and the barkeep sets down a mug he was drying with a suspicious gaze cast your way.

The silence continues as you make your way with your now wary men towards the bar. You’ve coin aplenty for a handful of rooms in a place like this and drop them on the countertop to show it. You notice a couple of men at a nearby table take their hands off the hilts of short swords at the sight of the coin. Must’ve been expecting trouble… but from whom? The four cloaked by the hearth still remain quiet even after the singer and harpist pick up with a heartier tune. Odd, that. It’s a touch warm for such garb, especially near the fire. A glance towards their boots shows they’re damp from somewhere. Lastly, the long table has a spaced-out assortment of travelers already deep in their cups.

“Coin’s good as any. Still, might’s well get this out b’fore this lot drains too many cups. Who’d ya fight for?” the barkeep asks.

“The Dragon. Who do you take me for? A turncloak?” you announce in an even voice that carries to the nearby table. While the man pales under your gaze, he and those around you visibly relax further. Makes sense, really. It seems unlikely the Targaryens came through to smash their gates in on the way north. You certainly can’t recall such an order.

“Just as well, ser. Just as well. Din mean none offense. We don’t take kindly to traitors in these parts, is all. Had to be sure,” he says apologetically before offering you a free round. No sense in turning it down...

“You passing along to the tourney? I’d seent the bow on your back. I reckon there’s to be archery an the like as well,” the barkeep says by way of conversation as Aodhan and Tristian and their two respective teams grab a couple of the empty tables. Despite the number of patrons present, the inn still looks to be at only about half-capacity.

“I’m here for a ship is all, but you’ve my attention. Tell me of this tourney, goodman,” you say.

“Up by way of Maidenpool, I hear. Some little lordling up there’s been raised up on account of managing to be the one to not get dead. Dunno much beyond it’s a Mooton and like as not isn’t much next to the brother, but who can be picky in these times?” he answers.

Hmm. You can’t recall getting an invitation to such, but it could’ve come after you left. You counted Ser Myles Mooton amongst your few friends before the war. He was to inherit in Maidenpool one day, but he died in the same battle as your father. He had a brother but a year younger named William. You can’t recall ever meeting him. One of many second sons left to languish in the shadows of their greater siblings. Still, it’s news the older Lord Manfryd has passed. You hadn’t heard of him falling in battle, but there are probably scores of highborn dead that you’re not aware of.

You thank the man and return to the two tables that have been dragged together for your party. Most of your men are still very much on-guard despite the easy laughter and jests. Aodhan in particular simply drums his fingers on the table with a slight frown as he looks about the room.

“I trust no one in this room, Cormaic,” he says.
>>
>>3932967
“Aye, nor do I,” you concede. “I suppose that’s to be expected.” While they’re not all privy to who exactly gave the order, your men are aware they’re to be on the lookout for some suspicious activity. Guarded and alert on a good day, they’re close to paranoia now.

“I don’t mind taking a few of the lads and getting friendly with the locals if you’re up for putting your feet up, boss,” Tristian offers with an easy smile.

“Hmm. He may have a point. You’re not likely to make any quick friends here, but this peacock may,” Aodhan quips with a smirk.

“Don’t know about all that. I just like to talk is all. I wager you’re jealous I bed more girls than you,” Tristian says.

“Aye? Any kids to show for it?” Aodhan leans forward with mock interest.

“Eh. Not sure. Mayhaps there’s something about knightly seed. Seems to be a pattern, least with you two,” he nudges you conspiratorially.

Please pick two of the options below to talk with. Feel free to specify which you’re going to talk with yourself and which you’d like Tristian to handle.

Hey guys, I hate to do this, but I’m going to take a break for a few days to flesh things out some more. I’ve been running basically whenever I’ve had free time and, to be candid, it’s led to me running sessions based on whatever ideas I’ve had in between runs for months now. We really are off the rails. It’s gone well enough, but sometimes the quality bugs me, so I’m going to take some time to make sure all of this has the level of detail I’d prefer to inject.

I’ll probably pick up in a new thread next week. Until then, feel free to drop suggestions, or critiques if that’s more your style. Hell, even conspiracy theories. Every bit may help my planning and plotting endeavors. Thanks for understanding.

That sounds good. Hopefully, we can get a run in the next week or two. It's always good to call it if you believe things could be better fleshed out with more idea's around where you want the game to go. Even if only a rough sketch of things.

Father, Joe and Boggs take a break from running at the same time... Makes you think.

REAAAAAAALLY makes you think.

Have we ever seen them post at the same time even?

Well Father is for sure a burger. Joe never confirmed or denied the accusation that he's a filthy leaf. And I'm pretty sure Boggs is a eurofag due to his run times, but it is suspicious nonetheless why they abandoned us

Nah I'm a burger too. I just have a weird schedule. I'm positive Joe is a leaf from his reaction to Castro Jr's reelection.
