In the era follow humanity’s ascension to the stars, Earth’s peacekeeping forces can no longer police the galaxy at large. Spread too thin over too much territory, lawlessness has become the new law in all but the most critical systems. Seeing opportunity in the chaos, mercenaries and para-military groups have sprung up, taking advantage of the need for protection and muscle in unpoliced systems. Galactic Manpower Solutions or G.M.S. is one of those groups.

When last we left off, Brett was joining the strike team on board Asphodel to gather information on the assassination target.

“If you need the help sure, why not,” You say standing up from the pilot’s chair and checking your sidearm. Surprise briefly flashes over Riley’s face before returning to its relaxed unconcerned look. You follow the strike team to the end of the docking tube and into the vessel proper. Waiting for you all at the end of the tube though, was a security team. They do a quick pat down and check all of your weapons. You find it strange that they would allow all of you keep your sidearms, but you’re not exactly complaining as they eventually wave you through.

Once through security Riley halts everyone. “Alright people buddy up and split up. Remember, we’re here on leave so act like it.”

The team quickly splits up into teams of two leaving you the odd man out.

>Join “Spark” and “Wire” and head for the casino.

“Hey, wait up.” you call to Fling and Slink “mind if I join you?”

Fling gives you a once over then shrugs, “Hm, what do you think Slink?”

Slink stares at you with his always impassive face before saying “Okay,” at barely over a whisper.

“Holy shit, Slink really likes you.” Fling says “He never says anything about anyone. Well if Slink’s got a good feeling about you, then you can come with. What’s your name?”

“Brett.”

“Well Brett let’s go.”

As you head down the corridor toward one of Asphodel’s restaurants you can’t take your eyes off Slink. You’d never seen him before and wouldn’t have known who he was if you hadn’t overheard the Recon team talk about him during the trip. Slink was apparently their infiltration specialist and as you look at him you can start to see why. Slink was entirely average, average height, average build, average face, average everything. In a group he simple blended in completely but here, isolated from a crowd, his averageness was strange to your eye and a little discomforting.

Your discomfort doesn’t last long however as soon you enter the “restaurant”, it was more a mix between a food court and an all you can eat buffet than a typical restaurant. Regardless Fling and Slink quickly pay for the buffet and start piling food on their plates and into their mouths. It would seem they were taking a more literal interpretation of Riley’s orders to relax.

>Follow the other twos lead it’s been a while since you’ve had anything decent to eat.

Following the other twos lead, you pay for the buffet and load up your plate. It had been a while since you’d had food that wasn’t G.M.S. provisions. Everything tasted absolutely delicious and you find yourself making a few more trips to load up your plate. Between mouthfuls of food you talk with Fling and Slink.

“Mmm god this is good it’s been forever since I’ve had a decent meal.” Fling says pausing to savor her food a little. “We really pulled a great assignment this time haven’t we Slink.”

Slink simply grunts without taking his eyes off his plate.

“Are you and Slink paired together a lot?” you ask.

“All the time, Slink’s my spotter when we’re not doing infiltration shit like this. He’s got good eyes, ears, and is quite talkative when he’s calling out targets. Speaking of which, Slink you seen our guy yet?”

“No, he’s not here.”

“Oh thank god, that means we can relax a little longer,” Fling says stretching out and leaning further back into her chair. “Tell me Brett, what do you think of G.M.S.? Is it what you expected?” Fling asks folding her fingers together across her gut and propping her head up to look at you with benign interest.

>“It’s about what I expected maybe a little less professional than I anticipated but not by much.”
>“Better, I thought things would be much worse, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised so far.

"Honestly? I don't know what I was expecting, but I've been pleasantly surprised so far. Things could always be worse, right?"

“You got that right,” Fling nods “We might not have gotten to eat befo-”

Just then one of the team radios in “I’ve got eyes on our target. He’s on the move.”

“This shit happens.” she finishes.

“Alright people nice and easy now keep your eyes on him and stay out of sight.” Riley says over the coms as you, Fling, and Slink slip out of the restaurant. Following the directions coming from the trooper on the target, you finally catch sight of the mark in a crowded corridor of the ship. He was flanked by two beefy looking bodyguards which made him stick out like a sore thumb, although it would make it a little harder to get close to him. As soon as you slip into the stream of people behind the target, Slink press on ahead and disappears into the crowd. You keep on the target from a distance as he meanders through the ship. You spend a few more minutes in the human river before the target and one of his bodyguards breaks off down a side corridor and leaving the other guard to continue through the crowd.

“They split off,” Riley says “I want two on the bodyguard see where he goes everyone else stay on target.”

“Copy that we’re on it,” you respond looking at Fling and nodding at the bodyguard. Taking your hint she follows you as you split off and continue after the bodyguard. The man continues to wade through the crowded corridor for a few more feet before turning off down a less populated passage.

Without the aid of a crowd, staying inconspicuous while tailing him becomes difficult, but the bodyguard shows no signs of having noticed you or Fling. He looks unconcerned as ever as he enters a public restroom. The restroom would be a good place to corner and question him but it would risk alerting the primary target. Tailing him would be less risky certainly, but you’d only find out where this guy is going and you might never get another chance to corner him.

Moving in would be too big a risk, you weren’t the only one on this mission and you’d rather not be the one to fuck it up for everyone else. You and Fling reposition yourselves near the bathroom while the bodyguard is out of sight. You wait until you hear a toilet flush and the large man exits the bathroom and continues on his way. Staying out of sight you and Fling continue to stalk the man. You have a close call when the man suddenly does a 180 and heads back to grab a bite from a food stand you were standing next to, but you carefully avoid eye contact with the bodyguard and pass by him without getting so much as a sideways glance. After that brief heart attack the bodyguard continues on to what you assume was his destination, a docking tube on the opposite side of the ship from yours. Judging from the lack of security screenings these must be the docks reserved for special clientele. While the bodyguard punches a code into the tube’s keypad, the team following your target reports him entering one of the ship’s brothels. Fling in turn reports the location of what you and she assume is your secondary target, the businessman’s ship.

Riley acknowledges your report and calls everyone, save Slink who was to keep an eye on the target, back to the ship to gear up. The team trickles back into the ship piece meal to avoid suspicion while Riley starts to formulate the plan of attack. “The way I see it,” he says “We’ve two ways of doing this. We go in now and hit the asshole while he’s in the brothel with his pants down, or we wait for him to leave and nail his ass in one of the hallways. If we hit him in the brothel, he’ll have nowhere to run, but we’re going to have a lot of civvies in the way making a mess of thing. If we hit him in one of the corridors, he’ll have room to run, but we’ll have fewer people in the way. Thoughts?” he asks turning the discussion over to his team who seem divided on the issue. The argument starts to stagnate when Fling elbows you in the side and says “Say something or we’ll be here forever.”

The team is about to flip a coin when you voice your support for hitting the target in one of the corridors. There is a brief pause as everyone turns to look at you like you were some child who had just swore in front of his relatives. Riley breaks the silence saying “Alright our pilot takes the tie breaker vote we hit the guy in the hallway. Get your shit together, we go when Slink sees the guy leave.” There is a murmur of acceptance and the team gets back to affixing their gear.

Riley pulls you aside to give you some extra orders. “Alright pilot, as soon as the target is confirmed dead and we all get back here. You’re going to make a detour to our target’s ship and blow it up in the dock before we leave. Got it?”

“Got it.” you confirm as Riley returns to his team. You check your ships systems one more time before the call comes in that the target has left the brothel. “Alright people this is it.” Riley shouts “ We move fast, blow through this security checkpoint and don’t stop until the target is dead and were back on the ship. We can’t afford to get bogged down by security, so do whatever it takes to keep moving. Ready!”

“Ready!” comes the chorus of voices

“Let’s go.” Riley leads the charge out of your ship and into the docking tube. You hear the brief chatter of gunfire at the end of the tube before the team pushes out of earshot. The next few moments are spent in a tense quiet as you listen over the coms for updates from the team. From what little chatter your team lets out during their push, you can tell things are going smoothly, that is until loud sirens start blaring all over throughout the ship and suddenly your ship systems notify you that the docking tubes locks have engaged essentially bolting your ship into its dock. You weren’t going anywhere with the locks engaged, not if you didn’t want to shear the back of your ship off during takeoff. The locks would have to be disengaged if anyone was going to get out of here.

>Try to remove the locks physically. It’ll involve a lot of explosives or a blow torch, but either way it’ll take a while.

Grabbing some tools from the cargo bay, you update Riley on the lock down and your plans to cut your ship free of the locks. “Alright, just make sure you’re free by the time we get back,” Riley pants in response “We’re almost to the target.”

You cut away the inner walls of the tube and expose the locking bolts, several thick metal cylinders securing your ship to the docking tube. This was going to take a while. You start melting away the first cylinder while listening to the updates from the Recon team. They had caught up with the target in a slimly populated corridor. Seeing several heavily armed mercs enter the same hallway as him, the target attempted to make a run for it leaving his bodyguards to cover his retreat, but his bodyguards while beefy weren’t bulletproof and didn’t stand up very well against military grade weaponry and armor. Riley’s team quickly shot their way through the bodyguards and were about to finish off the target, when the fat little politician began begging for his life and promising to hand over all of the blackmail info on his ship if they’d let him live. Interest piqued and seeing additional cash Riley radios you asking how freeing the ship was going. “I’ve seared through two of the eight locks so far,” you tell him. With some time on his hands Riley orders the team, along with the politician, to the ship to retrieve the blackmail.

Halfway through the third bolt, the door at the far end of the docking tube opens and four Asphodel security guards in combat gear enter the tube point their guns at you and order you to surrender.

>Try to fall back into your ship and pray they don’t shoot you before you can close the door.
>Open fire on the guards, the tube doesn’t have much cover, but surprise might let you even the odds a little.

Facing down four armed security guards, you know there is no way you can take in the docking tube like this, so lacking alternatives, you make a leap into the cargo bay. The security guards however were expecting something like that and open fire as you fly through the air. You are riddled with rounds as you crash into the cargo bay, catching bullets in the thigh, shin, side, and arm. Blinded with pain, you roll behind the rear wall of the bay putting some cover between yourself and the security guards before reaching up and hitting the emergency shutters on cargo bay doors. The thick metal shutters quickly slam shut and you are safe for the moment.

You scream and swear in pain as you examine the four bullet holes in the left side of your body. None of them had hit anything vital, but your wounds hurt and bled nonetheless and you were having a hard time focusing on anything but the pain.

Trying to not pass out, you radio Riley and his team and update them on the new situation. Riley is surprisingly calm considering you just told him his escape route had been cut off. He tells you to sit tight while Quack and Slink come to rescue you. The thought of reinforcements relaxes you enough that the blood roaring in your ears quiets down and you can hear *SHHHH* sound from behind the emergency shutters. With dawning horror you realize you’d left the welding equipment out in the tube and the security guards were using it to cut through your door.

After telling Riley to hurry you summon all your strength and stand back up on your good leg. You were going to make things a little harder for the security guards this time.

You don’t have a lot of time to prep and your wounds will slow you down, pick two things to prepare.

We have extra space suits for our passengers if we blow a hole in the hull, and if we can seal the cockpit it's probably good to hold one or two people as well, which handles the politician target guy.

You would have gotten your shot off first, but the blast would have hit you and the guards. You would have taken a little less damage than getting shot did, but you would've then made a roll to hold on to something when hole you blew in the docking tube tried to suck you out into space.

Dragging your wounded leg with you, you slip on a set of spare armor and pick up one of the recon team’s rifles. Then you start shuffling around boxes and build yourself a little barrier. By the time the last crate is in place and you get down behind the stack, the guards are nearly finished cutting through the shutters. Setting your gun sights on the door, the blow torch finally melts out a man sized hole in shutter, and with an almighty clang the newly melted metal falls in.

Alright folks I will start combat in approximately 15 hours, before then I will need to explain some combat stuff.
>>
Ground combat is much like fighting in your ship but with a few differences. Your personal protection is just like your ships.
Personal DC: Dodge chance 20 + Armor 35 = 55

But you also get the benefit of cover like your new barricade which has 70 coverage and medium sturdiness, so any shot at you has to either roll over 70 or have medium or better penetration to hit you. Even if a weapon has enough penetration to get through your cover it still has to roll high enough to hit you

There is also a new mechanic I call stress. When you’re up in your ship you feel safer. If someone shoots at you, you’re behind several inches of metal and getting hit or going down isn’t a guarantee of dying. On the ground however with bullets whizzing by your head, you feel stressed, high levels of stress impacts your aim and your ability to perform in general giving you maluses to most checks. When your stress hits 100 you’ll break down, become unresponsive and perform a random action, until you can calm down.

While in a combat zone it’s hard to lower stress but there are a few things that help such as: being near teammates, successfully killing an enemy, and hunkering down.

Most of your stress relief comes after battle and during your time on the ship, what relieves stress can vary wildly and will depend on who you play Brett as.

Things that raise stress are generally obvious things like: getting suppressed, getting hit, and witnessing “scary shit”

Right now after getting shot and having only a few minutes to calm down Brett is at 70/100 stress meaning all of his rolls will take a -10 malus. If you manage to lower your stress down to 50 the maluses will disappear.

As you become more experienced your stress will become harder to increase and some things will no longer faze you.
>>
>>3953433

Lastly you now have combat options to choose from.

Shoot to Kill: Fire at any visible target (no additional modifiers) [If you wish to shoot a particular target then please specify with your vote.]

Suppression: Fire at any target as long as you know their location. [If you wish to shoot a particular target then please specify with your vote.]
>Pros: Decreases targets accuracy while suppressed and target can only fire after your hit calculation.
>Cons: Suppression exposes you lowering your cover bonus.

Overwatch: Fire at the first enemy that becomes visible.
>Pros: your hit calculation comes before your enemy’s
>Cons: your snap aim lowers your accuracy

Hunker Down: Stay behind your cover as best you can and attempt to reduce stress
>Pros: doubles your cover bonuses (max of 100), can lower your stress
>Cons: You don’t shoot that round and getting hit while hunkered down causes severe stress.

Reposition: move to a new piece of cover
>Note: Repositioning may involve you leaving cover depending on the cover you move to.

Flank: Attempt to move around the enemy to get a better firing angle.
>Pros: A successful flank will eliminate an enemy’s cover for a turn and force them to relocate, unless they think they can kill you first
>Cons: Will leave you exposed while you move eliminating your cover bonuses.

Now with all of this information in mind choose your action.

>Attack stopped by cover

The first man through the door is met by a spray of bullets from your rifle. His armor takes the rounds, but can’t stop them. The guard is knocked back and half falls, half is dragged into cover around the hole by one of the other guards. The two security guards immediately flanking the door return fire, but their shots go wide over your head or slam into the pile of crates.

Dose suppression make it harder for the enemy to advance or dose it just lower the enemy's accuracy?
>>
>>3954032

It lowers their accuracy and should they attempt anything that would expose them, like advancing you'll get to roll to hit. So yes it makes it hard for them to move up.

As you peek out of cover this time, you open up on the hole in the shutter, spraying fire into the gap. Your enemies unfortunately had much the same idea and torrent of rounds comes at you at the same time you fire on them. Rounds whizzing around you, you can’t seem to stay on target and your bullets bounce off of the shutter and your nerves rattled. Your enemies have much the same problem however and none of their bullets manage to find you.

Suppress them until the cavalry shows up and blows them to kingdom come. If we seal the cockpit now, they'll just shoot it or cut through it and then we won't be able to extract the VIP. Our cargo hold is already unsuited to keeping him alive in hard vacuum; the crew is going to be riding back in hardsuits in the cargo bay so we need to keep the sealed cockpit doors working.
>>
>>3954396

Just to clarify the thing the security guards cut through was the emergency shutter, not the cargo bay doors themselves. The emergency shutters are a fail-safe that's meant to seal the bay if the cargo bay doors malfunction in a vacuum. The reason you closed the shutters when you ran and not the regular doors is that the regular doors take too long to close. Once this mess is sorted out you can just close the bay doors like normal and not have to worry about having your cargo bay being exposed to space.

Weapon damage 5 * 1.4 (Battle Buddies) = 6 damage taken
Lethal Wound received

Staying in the stream of bullets, you continue to hold down your own trigger hoping to hit them first, but all your rounds plink off of the shutter. As you watch eyes catch another guard lean out from behind the shutter and open up on you. His aim was far better than his companions and as you shoot, fire rips through the left side of your body. You reflexively jerk back behind cover, but you overshoot and fall down to the deck plating. You try to pull yourself back up, but you find your body numb and unresponsive.

You grit your teeth and try but as you do you notice a squirt of blood shoot out of your chest near your left armpit. As you look down, you notice the torrents of blood gushing out of the new bullet wound in the side of your chest, just left of the armor. Every time your heart beats, another squirt of blood rushes out of the wound to pool on the ground beneath you. Your limbs were starting to tingle now and a chill creeps into your flesh. You can’t hold yourself up any longer and sink limply back down. As you lay there blood seeping down out of your wounds, you find it odd that you can still hear gunfire. Are the guards still shooting at you? While you ponder that question, something starts to buzz in your ear. At first you think it’s just your ears ringing from all the shooting, but as you listen, the buzzing turns into words. “Hold on kid, hold on!” The words pull you out of your stupor that was Quack’s voice.

>>3954536

Suddenly a security guard stumbles past you and gets down behind your barricade. His friend follows soon after him along with a stream of bullets. The two men seem far more concerned with the threat in the tube than with checking whether you were dead or not. Trying to focus your thoughts, something bumps into your right hand. You look down to find a grenade pressing against your fingers. In their rush to get behind cover, one of the guards had knocked over a crate and it had broken open when it hit the ground spilling out its contents. Your eyes hold on the grenade for a long moment. The wound in your chest is not good, and Quack might not be able save you even if he got here now. The most you could do now would be to go out with a bang. Or a pop, you think eyeing the pistol in your holster. NO, you push the thoughts away, you’ve got to hold on.

>Go out with a bang, pull the pin on the grenade.
>Pull your pistol and unload into the guards’ backs
>Put pressure on your wound, you’ve got to hold on.

Hold on, hold on, hold on. You repeat the mantra to yourself over and over again as you bring your right hand up and clamp it over your wound. Hold on, hold on, hold on over and over you concentrate on those words, clinging to them for dear life...
You’d watch as Brett was hit, dumb bastard should have kept his head down, but it was thanks to his handy to distraction that you and Slink were able to take out two of the guards and only had two left to contend with. Positioning yourselves around the hole in the shutter, you and Slink prepare to take down the last of the guards, when over your radio your hear a whispered “Hold on” repeated over and over. The voice was unmistakably Brett’s, the lucky fuck was still alive if only just. You and Slink share a look and steel yourselves, your rescue mission as still on.

Alright anons you’ve got a shot at saving your life here. If you can clear the cargo bay and get Quack to your body in 4 turns you might make it out of this yet. As you turn the corner a spray of bullets slams into the shutter where you’re standing. Ignoring the deadly hail, you open up on the now exposed guard. He doesn’t stand a chance as two of your rounds find their mark underneath his right arm and just above his collar bone. The man jerks back down and you continue to lay on the fire as Slink takes off moving around the side of the stacked crates. With no cover between him and his target Slink bets on being able to fire first and takes aim at the now flanked guards.

Keeping the pressure on the two guards you continue to let loose on their cover. While they manage to keep their heads down and avoid your shots, they can’t avoid Slink’s fire, his burst kills the wounded guard placing two rounds in his head and neck, and sending a few grazing shots into the other guard. His return fire strikes true, however and bullets slam into Slink’s chest plate and arm guard. Seeing his all of his friends die around him, the stress finally gets to the last trooper and he breaks down tossing his weapon on the ground and raising his hands to surrender. “I-I surrend-” the guard gets no further as Slink puts his rifle in the man’s face and executes him.

From your position on the ground, you’d watched as Slink killed the last guard. You try say something to him, but the intake of breath to speak caused too much pain. Moments later Quack rushes into your fading vision. He takes one look at you and a smile splits his lips. “You’ll be alright kid, he says as he gingerly pries your fingers away from your wound. “Your arm might not be though,” he says his smile replaced with a frown and a weak spurt of blood leaks out of the wound. “Hold on,” Quack says Taking his sanitary gloves out of his pack and sliding them over his hands “This is going to hurt” in a quick motion he jams his thumb into your wound. Pain shoots through your body, but quickly dissipates as darkness envelops you.

When you next come to you’re in the med bay, your left arm done up on a sling and being held up and away from your body. There was no pain, but you felt kind of groggy and a fog lay over your thoughts. The part of the med bay you were in was relatively quiet. In the beds around you were other badly wounded crew were bound up in casts and braces. Further down the bay though were the livelier patients, people who were coming in for minor/ non-life threatening wounds. You crane yourself out of bed a little to see who was down there, when a passing nurse, who looked disturbingly like one of your school lunch ladies, noticed you were awake. “Get your butt back in that bed.” She chastises, helping you to settle back down. “How’s the arm feeling?” she asks examining the cast.

“Numb,”

“Good, it should be. You know you’re lucky to even have an arm still. The medic who treated you knew his stuff. He managed to save you and salvage your wreck of an arm. Though there’s only so much we could do.”

“What do you mean?” you ask panic sending a chill down your spine.

“The bullet that hit your artery, the one that nearly killed you, on its way through it did serious damage to the nerves in your left arm. We don’t know the extent of the damage yet, that will have to wait until the cast comes off, but the doctors suspect that you won’t have full function.”

The nurse’s words drive a spike of fear into you as the numbness in your arm goes from strange to unpleasant. “Wha- w-will I still- will I still be able to fight?” you ask trying and failing to keep the panic out of your voice.

The nurse only shrugs “Like I said we won’t know until the cast comes off and we can test motor functions. But what I can tell you is that trying to wriggle out of bed and jostling your arm won’t help. The best thing you can do at the moment is rest and not stress yourself or your arm too much.” A voice calls out for the nurse from another bed and she departs leaving you alone with your thoughts. What if your arm’s dead and you can’t move it at all? How will you fly a ship? Will you be able even finish your contract. These and many other terrifying thoughts cross your mind as you try to come to terms with the fact you may never be able to use your arm again. You begin to feel anger well up from inside you and search for an outlet.

>Damn Riley, if he wasn’t so careless about his planning, none of this would have happened.

How could I have been so stupid, you tell yourself. I’m a pilot, not a commando I never should have left the damn ship and left fighting to the actual soldiers. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid you repeat over and over pounding your fist against your head trying to knock some sense into yourself. If I was so dumb I’d still have my arm you think to yourself starring at your cast. You feel tears well up into your eyes and you bite down on your knuckle to stop them from spilling out on to your cheeks. What if I can never use my arm again, what will I do will I be able to stay here will… Thousands of terrifying scenarios run through your head as you stare wide eyed at unresponsive arm.

You’re so absorbed in your own thoughts that you don’t notice when a woman in black robes come up alongside your bed. It is only when she speaks that you are pulled back.

“You’re new patient aren’t you?” she says her voice soft and quiet, yet quite audible from where you’re lying. You turn to look at her and instantly recognize the sequined robes of the ship’s Void Priestess Miriam. You look up at her face, but can’t see much through her obscuring black veil, though you can see her smiling warmly down at you.

“Yeah I am,” you say forcing the emotion out of your voice.

“I thought so, the other young man who occupied this bed didn’t have such a distressed look on his face when he saw me. Is your arm troubling you?”

“No, it’s fine.”

“Good, pain is an ugly thing that no good person should suffer.”

“And what makes you think I’m good person?”

Miriam pauses for a long moment during which you can feel her eyes staring you up and down. “I can just tell, I’ve always been a good judge of people.”

“I see, so are you here to help with the wounded or are you here just to judge people.”

“I help in my own way. I provide comfort and peace for those who ask for it and simple prayers for those who don’t.”

“Comfort and peace? And how do you provide that,”

“Depends on the person, some seek the Mother’s embrace, or her kind word. Others just like me to sit and talk with them. Sometimes we don’t talk at all and just sit there until they’re comforted. Do you seek comfort?” She asks.

>“No, I’m alright.” You don’t need this strange priestesses help.
>“No, but can you tell me what happened to the rest of the team.”
>“Sure, I don’t know what’s going to help at this point.”

“No, not really, though I’d like to know what happened to the rest of the team that was on the mission with me.”

“What team was this?”

“Well it was a recon team, their leader was a guy named Riley.”

“Riley… Riley… Oh I know him, yes he’s one of my more frequent visitors. He told me all about his last mission. So you’re the pilot who got injured. I see now. The mission went quite well, Riley told me they’d secured their target along with some blackmail information he had on the client. As I understand, the Admiral was quite pleased with his team’s performance. Riley was bursting with pride when he told me. He also mentioned you with less disdain than he normally mentions pilots,”

“Really?” you say not entirely convinced.

“Oh yes besides the normal pleasantries, he said you had more guts than most pilots. Although, now that I think about it. He may have meant that more literally than I’d realized.” She laughs as she lays a hand on your cast.

You can’t help but laugh a little with her, though you immediately regret the action as the muscles around your chest would complain bitterly causing you to wince.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I have to remind myself not to make chest wound patients laugh.” The Priestess adjusts her robes as she rises back to her feet. “Now that’s a better looking face,” she says looking back down at your now smiling face. “May the Mother soothe your pains and aid you in a swift recovery,” Miriam says before giving you a small nod and proceeding down the med bay to another patient.

You don’t spend too many more days in the med bay until the doctor’s clear you return to light duty on board the ship. Though you still have to wear your cast and a sling, at least you were out of bed and on your feet. With one arm down and the doctor’s telling you to avoid strenuous activities there was only so much you help with on the ship. You spent most of your time…

>Helping the kitchen staff with meals.

Olev, despite being a filthy little goblin of a man, keeps very good track of his stock. Aiding his clerks, you walk the near half mile of warehouse in which most of the ship’s non-perishable goods were kept in order inventory the whole thing. During your time, you come across nearly every possible object that the ship or a solider would need as well as thousands upon thousands of miscellaneous pieces of junk that you have no idea what their use could possibly be. The work isn’t too hard, but Olev does his best to make sure no one gets too relaxed or happy, by demanding that they fetch him things that are on the other side of the warehouse from where they are or by not being satisfied with someone’s count and making someone else recount because it didn’t line up with whatever insane numbers he had in head for how many hull bolts we had in stock.

Inventory isn’t all you do though. You also act as a delivery boy for requisitions. Whether it was maintenance parts, or some trooper’s new piece of gear, you’d walk up and down the ship to deliver it. It is on one of these trips that you’re sent down into the maintenance shafts and corridors to deliver some parts to a person named Birdy in power distribution. “I’ve got a package here for Birdy,” You call out and some of the engineers glance at you and smile, a few snicker but no one answer’s your call. You call out a few more times to much of the same, getting annoyed at the engineer’s looks you shout “Come guys I don’t have all day, where’s Birdy.”

You hear a low whistle, almost like a bird call followed by something like a snake hiss “I’m Birdy.” An artificial voice says form behind you. You turn around and shout in surprise as you lock eyes with an Avernia. The feathered reptile was propped up on its hind legs to stand as close to eye level with you as it could. You stare slack jawed at the alien for a minute, it was the first time you’d ever seen an alien alive and up close. All of the nearby workers break into audible laughter at your reaction and the Avernia snaps its jaw and titters at you, “You got my package or what.” The artificial voice says.

You offer Birdy, his… her… its… package, while you try to settle on a reaction

>You’re just dumbfounded, a real live alien right in front of you, you’ve got to get a good look at his thing.
>Your reaction was a little embarrassing, try and calm down a little and finish the delivery.
>You should probably apologize your reaction was a little hurtful.

“Sorry I uh, it’s just that I’ve never seen an alien before.” You stammer out an apology while Birdy opens the package and examines its contents. It makes a low cooing noise and looks back to you. You automatically hand Birdy the delivery confirmation to sign before the translation unit mounted on its chest can finish “Well I hope you got a good look,” Birdy hands you back the confirmation with a series of sharp slashes on the signature line before it takes the package in its mouth, drops down on all fours, and scurries up a wall and into a small maintenance shaft.

With the show over, all the workers return to their business leaving you standing there still a little astounded by your first meeting with an alien. When you get back to the warehouse and return the confirmation of delivery to Olev, you question him. “I didn’t know we had aliens on this ship.”

Olev gives you a sideways look “You didn’t? You gotta get around more. We’ve got all kinds of aliens serving on board.”

“Really because haven’t seen a single one since I got here.”

“Well most of them aren’t in combat roles, so I doubt a pilot like you would have seen many. There’s quite a few working in engineering and maintenance, a couple of janitors and a bit of the bridge crew is alien, I believe.” Olev says scratching at his patchy beard “Oh and speaking of the bridge I need you to take some monitor parts up to the bridge. While you’re there you can see all the creepy aliens you want.” Olev hands you the requisition forms and you quickly assemble what’s needed before heading off for the bridge.

When you arrive at the door to the bridge, the guards simply glance at your requisition form and bag of parts then simply wave you in. The bridge itself was rather impressive all the other parts of the ship had always felt old, but the bridge looked pretty modern monitors and consoles coated most of the walls and a large holo-map of the fleet and its surrounding space dominated the center of the room. Olev wasn’t lying when he said the bridge crew was part alien. Bressans, Avernia, Plathians, and Quith mingle in with the human part of the bridge crew all of them tapping away at their consoles. You don’t get to examine your surroundings for too long though as a passing man locks eyes on your bag of parts “Ah so you have my parts good.” You hand the man the bag and the forms while you try to look around some more.

It is then that you notice the low chatter in the room pick up in speed and volume and something oval shaped appears on the large holo-map. The chatter increases even more as more ovals and dozens of smaller shapes appear on the map. A familiar and professional looking woman moves in front of the map. As you watch, an aid comes to the woman’s side, “Incoming communication admiral, we’re patching it through now.”

“Emma, it would seem that one a band of your criminals has captured someone who very recently requested our protection. I’d like you to hand him over.” A voice says from the holo-map

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Flint. My people go on missions all over the galaxy you’re going to have to be a little more specific,” The woman responds.

“I think you know exactly who you mean Emmy, A business man named Robert Filmore. Mere hours before one of my teams was to arrive to take him into our custody, one of your raiding parties shot through Asphodel and kidnapped him. I’d like him back.”

“You’re too late we’ve already delivered him to our client, if you have a problem go speak with them.” The woman says before whispering something in the aid’s hear and shifting the map to examine the new shapes on radar.

“Emmy you’re a terrible liar I know that you have him on your ship and that he is in fact alive. Let me make things easy for you, I’ll give you five minutes to put Mr. Filmore on a shuttle and send him over. If you don’t comply within those five minutes, my fleet will be more than happy to reduce that floating junkyard you call a fleet into even smaller pieces of scrap. Make your decision quickly the five minutes start now.”

“End communication.” The woman says to a crew member before swear, “Dammit get Filmore out of his cell and on to a shuttle. Then prepare the fleet to move.”

“Yes ma’am.” An aid says then takes off.

>You did not almost die just to hand that fat asshole over. Protest against this surrender.
>The enemy blips double your own, the Admiral clearly knows what she’s doing here. Finish your delivery and get out.

Alright anons this will be my last update for this thread, new thread will be coming some time during the week of the 23rd.

If they want Fillmore back so bad, how are they gonna reduce us to scrap while he's on board?
