You are Raishō Naori, daughter of the previous oiran of the Land of Storms and candidate for promotion to chūnin.

You’ve now faced three matches in the publicly-attended final round of competition: Kankuro from Sunagakure forfeited before facing you, Tenten from Konohagakure lost when her unsealing-based style couldn’t keep pace with your Raikō Kenka technique, and you totally outmaneuvered Hinata from Konohagakure together with your shrike summons Isoka.

Now there are no more matches to buy time. You’ve secured your position in the final round, so that means Uchiha Sasuke needs to either turn up and fight Gaara or be disqualified. Then the winner of that match will fight Temari, and the winner of that match will fight you. That means you have some time to rest, but it also means that your only company at this point is Temari and Kankuro. Everyone else has left: Tenten, Shikamaru, and Naruto presumably to join their teammates, Hinata to be seen to by the medical-nin.

It also means that your Konoha hosts only have one more candidate left in the fight, and Sasuke’s it.

“They’re gonna wait all day if they have to,” you realize with a heavy sigh. “Aren’t they?”

“Wouldn’t you?” Temari muses in response.

You shake your head. “Yeah, no. It’s not like he’s put in a good showing so far.”

“He’s the last of the Uchiha clan,” Temari insists. “That counts for something.”

“It’s just a name,” you counter, “so it really shouldn’t.”

“You’re right,” she agrees. “It shouldn’t. But it does.”

You fall silent for a while, watching and listening as both Gaara and the massive crowd grow increasingly restless.

“It’ll happen soon enough,” you muse. “The point where the Hokage considers Sasuke’s tardiness to reflect more poorly on his Village than what the hype surrounding his fight is worth.”

“Meanwhile Gaara’s just growing more irritated...” Kankuro muses. “That’s just great.”

“You’re one to complain,” Temari counters. “You don’t have to fight him after Sasuke.”

>Excuse yourself for now. You’re bored, so you’re gonna go search the stands for someone else to talk to.
>Ask Temari and Kankuro why the put up with Gaara if they’re clearly so terrified of him.
>Excuse yourself to ‘go to the bathroom’, use the time to set up a few dirty tricks for your match with… you’re gonna guess Gaara, at this rate.
>Just wait quietly.

I don’t see why they would. We don’t have any attachment to the hidden leaf, as far as they know.
>>
>>3946741
Naori is a strong wildcard that leans heavily towards being honorable. I don't think Temari and Kankuro would believe she'd just sit tight while the Leaf are being attacked.

Either way it's not like I believe it'd happen 100% guaranteed, I'm just wondering if it would and wanted to set up circumstances to see what'd happen.. Talking to them basically fulfills the same thing, I just thought the topic would be insensitive to bring up.

“Why do you stick around that guy if you’re so terrified of him?”

Temari and Kankuro both turn to you like they’ve forgotten you were still around, looking more than a little uncomfortable at the reminder that you’ve been listening in the whole time. They exchange nervous glances, before Temari answers you.

“Because… he’s our younger brother,” she explains. “That’s the reason why.”

“Not like he ever acts like it,” Kankuro grumbles. “He’d kill us just as quick as he’d kill anyone else.”

You can’t help but shake your head. “How the heck’d he end up like that?”

“From day one,” Kankuro grumbles.

“Kankuro!” Temari snaps, rounding on what you now know to be her brother. “You shouldn’t say things like that.”

“You’re not saying I’m wrong,” he observes, before turning his attention back to the ring. “You wonder why our old man keeps trying to kill him? Mom’s the reason why, Temari. It’s gotta be.”

Kankuro!” Temari snaps again, even louder this time. While Kankuro doesn’t apologize, he seems to realize he crossed a line when he mentioned their mother… who you gather is dead now. ‘From day one’ seems to imply she died in childbirth. Not reasonable, to hold a child responsible for that sort of thing, but perhaps understandable especially if their mother was a kindly sort of soul.

That sort of loss could easily break a family… you think.

The three of you fall silent.

Eventually, just as he’s about to be disqualified… Sasuke and Kakashi-han finally turn up. After a brief back-and-forth between Kakashi-han and Shiranui-han, the former leaves and Sasuke remains in the arena.

The first moments of the match between Sasuke and Gaara are something of a shocker: Sasuke is moving in a way you haven’t seen before, much more like Lee was in his match against Neji. In fact, you’d be willing to bet that he’s copying Lee’s taijutsu style… though he seems to be moving a bit slower than the original, it’s still entirely quicker than you’d expect of a genin. In fact you’d say that out of the genin you’ve seen fight so far Sasuke is currently the third-fastest, behind you and Lee.

He literally runs circles around Gaara, and you find yourself entranced by their fight so much that while you’re aware of Kankuro and Temari talking next to you it’s not clear what they’re saying. Their tone however is tense… which all things considered is to be expected.

“So this is the power of the Sharingan,” you muse, watching him carefully as he lands a series of blows on Gaara, battering him around despite the shield of sand that would ordinarily protect him.

The battle goes poorly enough in fact that Gaara raises a shell of sand around himself, protecting against attacks from every angle. Every time Sasuke tries to attack the sand morphs into spikes, all guided by a floating eye manifested outside the shell to maintain line of sight. Too small and mobile a target for Sasuke to hit individually, especially given its proximity to the shell itself: well within spiking distance.

Instead of continuing to fight like this, giving Gaara time to prepare whatever technique he’s doubtless preparing within his shell, Sasuke backs off. And not just a little… he backs off all the way up the side of the arena to about your own eye level.

Sasuke makes a few swift hand seals, then starts to do something dramatic.

“What is he doing?” Kankuro wonders aloud.

“It’s densely-concentrated chakra,” you realize. “Lightning-transformed by the look of it, so dense that it’s destroying the side of the arena.”

“When did he learn something like that?” Temari asks, completely dumbstruck. “I always assumed he was going to be a dangerous opponent, but this?”

Then Sasuke charges, straight down the wall and across the arena towards Gaara’s stationary shell of sand. So that’s why Kakashi-han focused on his speed… combined with the Sharingan to react more quickly to a counterattack like those spikes Gaara has been using, and it’s an extremely deadly charging thrust that largely mitigates the worst drawbacks to a blind charge.

That thrust penetrates straight through the shell, up to Sasuke’s elbow. The entire arena falls silent.

“Did he...” Temari practically whispers.

“The sand shield is still up,” Kankuro observes tensely. “But damn… who knows what’s going on inside there?”

You don’t have long to wait before you find out the answer, as Gaara lets loose an unearthly scream.

“I knew it!” Temari exclaims. “He’s hurt! Gaara’s actually hurt!

“This is bad...” Kankuro mutters.

With some effort and another surge of electricity Sasuke wrenches his arm free of the sand, which was apparently trying to crush his arm at the elbow, and he backs off as an inhuman limb of sand lashes out from inside the shell before withdrawing.

“No… not again!” Kankuro practically pleads.

“Was that…” Temari begins before Kankuro cuts his sister off.

This is getting more and more suspicious. Kankuro clearly knows more about the situation than he’s letting on, but refuses to say anything about it or let Temari say too much either. What’s with this tension? Even the chakra you feel from Gaara is different somehow… darker, denser.

That’s when you start to feel it: genjutsu.

You bite the inside of your lip, hard enough to draw blood, but when the Sand siblings move to dispel the genjutsu you collapse as though you hadn’t, first slumping over the railing then falling to one side to lie on your back.

“It’s finally time,” Kankuro declares. “She actually out?”

At what proves to be exactly the right moment, you spit the blood from your lip straight into Temari’s eyes. She cries out and backs away from you as you roll back onto your feet in a low crouch, but you find that her first instinct was a good one: she’s unfolded her fan.

The blast of wind basically destroys the viewing box, tearing the railing out of the wall with big chunks of concrete that tumble down into the arena in a massive jumbled pile. You manage to vault sideways over that railing before you’re seriously injured, though you do have to dust yourself off. Kankuro swings on chakra threads attached to the ground beyond you to reach the spot where Gaara has now collapsed near Sasuke, while Temari glides down atop her fan. They’re quickly joined by Baki, the burly jōnin who observed their preliminary fights, who barks his orders.

“Get Gaara out of the village!” he shouts. “He’s no good to us like this!”

“Right!” Temari acknowledges as she shoulders her injured younger brother and takes off for the wall even as you close in on them.

“Sasuke, you’re already at the chūnin level!” you hear Shiranui-han shout at Sasuke over the sound of distant explosions. Then he orders Sasuke to chase after the siblings.

You, on the other hand, find your progress barred.

“You...” you grumble, narrowly dodging a scything blade of compressed wind sent your way by the Suna jōnin. “Why are you doing this? You’re endangering innocent lives!”

“That’s part of the mission,” he declares, drawing a kunai. “I’ve already told Temari and Kankuro that you’re too strong for either of them to take on, and with Gaara wounded, my new mission is to deal with you myself.”

“What you’re doing here,” you growl uncharacteristically as you unsheath Umekiri, “is exactly like what’s been done to my homeland so many times… I may not have some undying love for Konoha, but I’ll be damned if I let myself become the kind of hypocrite who would look the other way.”

Baki seems somewhat taken aback by your declaration, before smiling grimly. “That’s good… it’s been a long time since I fought someone with such strong convictions. I think I’m beginning to respect you, Raishō Naori. However...”

The jōnin lunges at you with his kunai, the force behind his swing at a totally different level from your own upper body strength… the strength, after all, of a fifteen year-old girl.

“… I can’t let that respect get in the way. So keep that hard edge of yours, otherwise you’ll die.”

You manage to quickly recover, only to find that not only is Baki stronger than you he’s also faster. His taijutsu however isn’t quite at your level… his swings are well-controlled and precise but predictable, almost mechanical in nature. Were it not for your own mastery of kenjutsu you’d probably already be dead.

You keep close, focusing your chakra into Umekiri’s blade and making three quick hand seals ending with the seal of confrontation. Baki also weaves a few hand seals after throwing the kunai at you and missing, before sending more wind blades your way. These meet an afterimage, an illusion that stood where you were moments before. The second he sends at another afterimage, only to find you peppering him with Suzumebachi-Anken from behind. Two strike his legs, and one strikes his right arm, leaving thin cuts across his limbs before they disappear in puffs of smoke.

“Damn!” he grunts, quickly retaliating with shuriken of his own which you evade with a graceful pirouette through the air.

Next it’s just a matter of staying defensive on your feet until the anaesthetic goes to work, leaving his legs and dominant arm sluggish and his steps noticeably less coordinated.

“Those shuriken were poisoned,” he realizes with a grunt. “Very clever, Raishō Naori.”

“It’s impressive that we’ve been left alone this long,” you realize, sparing a glance at the stands. It seems like the Konoha jōnin, including Kakashi-han and Shiranui-han, have been taking care of large numbers of chūnin… not just from Sunagakure, but strangers wearing camouflage clothing like those genin from Otogakure. You also notice a large barrier around the rooftop where the Kages were spectating, attended by a group of Konoha ANBU.

“Our momentum is stalling,” Baki realizes. “Without Gaara we’re missing a decisive edge.”

You clash with Baki several more times, leaving a few more small cuts to renew the anaesthetic effect as you wear him down. His wind blades become less and less well-aimed, and his movements are now clearly slower than yours despite still packing a heck of a punch. That’s when you decide to make your move.

Weaving some one-handed seals you set up the illusion, briefly confusing Baki as to your body’s movements before shifting your attention to your sword. For an instant Baki sees three swords, strikes aimed at his neck, head, and upper arm. He uses his wind blades one more time to try and hit you before any of the possibly-real blades in your hand can find their target, only to find that you’ve vaulted into the air and are now attacking from above.

His right arm comes up to parry, but his armored pauldron slows the movement. His eyes widen as he realizes that he can’t actually parry you in this position with his limbs weakened and his own armor restricting his movement… and as you tumble in the air you slice Umekiri’s edge through his right bicep to land behind him, completing the aerial flip.

The severed arm lands nearby as you pivot and kick off, opening up space again.

Instead of pursuing you Baki pops a pair of smoke bombs, escaping across the arena and leaving his missing limb where it fell.

You haven’t managed to kill him… you get the distinct impression that if he were fighting to the death he could have stayed and continued fighting. But his endurance has come to an end, and pushing as far as he has led to a crippling injury. It was a wise decision to withdraw while he still could, and your first inclination is to allow him to do so.

Baki must have thought that he bought enough time for his students to escape. And he may be right, but you can’t know until you try… and it’s worth trying, because something’s very wrong with Gaara.

You quickly sheath your sword near the spot where Gaara was wounded, then bite your thumb and weave the seals.

“Kuchiyose: Isoka!”

The tiny shrike flits through the air excitedly. “You called again, Miss Naori?”

“I did,” you nod calmly, kneeling by Gaara’s blood. “Can you track the person this blood came from?”

“Leave it to me!” she declares triumphantly, perching on your finger as you lower your hand towards the bloodstain.

After a few seconds, she takes to the air. “This way!”

Isoka leads you up the wall and out of the arena, and then into the forests surrounding Konohagakure. You leave the chaos of the invasion behind you in the distance until you start seeing signs of a fight. Then you spot Temari, who seems to barely be on her feet after having been beaten by someone: probably Sasuke.

That means you’re on the right track.

You elect to pass Temari by, continuing instead to follow Isoka towards where Gaara is. Soon you can hear the sounds of titanic crashes and blasts, and can feel the wash of massive explosions.

“There’s a smaller chakra here!” Isoka chirps, taking refuge against the blast waves by perching on your left shoulder.

Swooping in, you find Sasuke standing in total shock as a massive toad wielding a tantō fights against a giant tattooed sand monster of some kind… like a badger, or a tanuki or something along those lines.

“What’s going on here?” you demand.

“It’s insane,” Sasuke declares, staring at the battle wide-eyed. “I couldn’t stop him… but Naruto...”

“Is that…” Isoka realizes, flitting away from your shoulder to perch on your outstretched finger. “What is that? Maybe Lady Nyoka would know?”

Well, on the upside that 6 recharges your SP entirely, so it's basically cut the cost to increase to a pass to 1 SP (4 to 6 to 3).

On the down side I'll have to start with an update including your previous failure, and then a vote whether to spend that SP.

>5: Failure
“Thank you for your help, Isoka,” you incline your head politely to the little bird. “But I think it’s time to try summoning Nyoka.”

“That’d be smart,” Isoka agrees, before disappearing into a puff of smoke.

You bite the tip of your thumb and begin weaving the seals as Sasuke watches dumbfounded.

“Don’t tell me you have a summons that can fight that monster too?”

“Kuchiyose: Nyoka!”

>5: Failure

There’s a puff of smoke… but no bird. You must not have put enough chakra into it to summon the bird you specified, and so instead of pulling in Isoka or Kijani or some other bird of lesser abilities and size, it simply failed.

You failed. At a moment like this, after exhausting a jōnin in single combat before slicing off his arm, you failed at a technique you should have control over by now. At such a crucial moment too, with a transformed Gaara rampaging around… and of all people, the one who pulled through wasn’t even Sasuke.

NARUTO succeeded at a technique where you failed.

>FAILURE
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2l6g_3ubdc

You draw Umekiri almost as a matter of instinct, but that isn’t your focus. Your chakra concentrates in your left palm, spinning violently as you add a third aspect inspired by Sasuke’s technique earlier: compression. You’re not even sure why you’re doing it, but you’re not going to stand here and just try the same technique over again. It’s high time to go on the attack, although it may be more honest to admit that you’re upset and ready to lash out at the most obvious target. On the other hand, the simple act of admitting that to yourself doesn’t change how you feel.

But yet again, something seems to be holding you back. Maybe it’s your emotional state, maybe it’s your relative inexperience in relying on ninjutsu. Maybe you’re starting to reach the limits of your own stamina. Whatever it is, it’s held you back already today… no, it’s been holding you back for years.

You refuse to let yourself fail again, not when the proverbial chips are down like this. And so you continue to focus your chakra in your left hand, spinning it faster, agitating it and amplifying it, all while compressing that power as tightly as you can manage. When it feels like it’s almost too much you back off slightly in one regard, bringing it all back into balance when otherwise you might have failed.

Through that perseverance, you’re finally able to create a stable sphere of compressed, violently rotating chakra in your left hand. This is not an elemental release technique: it’s all raw power and shape manipulation, so it’s probably less powerful than it could be if you were capable of transforming its nature at the same time. Even if you do some day learn water and nature release, you somehow doubt you’ll ever have the ability to combine this shape manipulation with that nature transformation.

But for now, this should be enough.

With a low roar of agitation you leap from the tree limb where you found Sasuke, charging up the back of the giant toad.

“This girl...” the toad realizes as you charge straight past Naruto and vault from the toad’s head and across the short gap between him and the head of the monster, out of which Gaara protrudes.

“Not enough!” you cry, slashing through and springing from several sand tendrils that lash out to bar your progress.

“What the hell!?” the monster roars. “No… no no nononono...”

The sand around Gaara’s waist quickly wraps the boy and hardens around his body as a last defense, just before your ball of chakra meets it.

Time to see what this new technique is capable of.

The rotating chakra grinds into the shield of hardened sand, cracking it, then eventually blowing it apart as your bare fist crashes into Gaara’s exposed jaw.

“I just got free!” the monster protests loudly. “Damn you, little witch! Damn youu!!!

As the sand reacts to your presence you kick off from Gaara’s chest, falling backwards through the air towards the forest below…

It’s now or never.

Cutting your thumb on Umekiri’s blade as you sheath her, you flash through the hand seals in record time and extend your left palm trailing a little stream of blood. This time, you yell it.

KUCHIYOSE: NYOKA!

This time, a giant shrike appears at the palm of your hand, and as Nyoka pulls out of the dive you slowly settle in atop her back in a croch, just ahead of the base of her wings.

“Must you be so loud, Lady Naori?” your summons asks jokingly as she gains a little more height.

“Ask that after you’ve seen what we’re dealing with here,” you counter breathlessly.

Nyoka wings over, then spies the giant monster. “You summoned this one to fight Shūkaku?”

“Shūkaku?” you repeat, confused as to how Nyoka knows the name of this beast. “You know of this thing? How?”

“This one has faced Shūkaku before in the past, long before you were born, young one,” Nyoka explains, beating her wings gently as Gaara regains control over his transformed form. “I see… so the one in his forehead is the jinchūriki.”

“Please speak in words I can understand!” you practically plead with Nyoka. “I’m a fifteen year-old girl, Lady Nyoka, my experience with the world is limited.”

“This one must apologize,” Nyoka responds. “A jinchūriki is a human into which one of nine chakra beasts of unrivalled power have been sealed. These beasts are known as the bijū, and have between one and nine tails.”

“The sand-tanuki before us is Shūkaku, the One-Tail, and his jinchūriki.”

“Gaara of the Sand,” you supply the name.

“Is there some way we can help them?” you ask Nyoka.

After a few seconds, Nyoka replies in a calm voice. “This one’s main ability is to give my partner more resources to work with. But this one can do some damage… on the condition that you return to train in cooperation ninjutsu as soon as possible.”

“Done,” you reply immediately.

“That is what this one wished to hear!” Nyoka tells you cheerfully, before swooping into the fight.

“Toad! This one will give you an opening!”

“I have a name, bird...” the massive toad grumbles mutinously as Nyoka snatches up a pair of fallen trees. Then after gaining altitude again, Nyoka dives down on Shūkaku before releasing the trees. These slam into Shūkaku’s back legs, pinning him in place for just a moment as the toad charges.

Naruto leaps from the toad’s head and tries to attack Gaara again, but finds himself caught in tendrils of sand. The toad is thrown back by a powerful hammering blow.

Not one to give up, Naruto finally manages to land a hit… using his forehead.

Gaara, and the sand monster he’s become, freeze in place.

Then the body that was Shūkaku crumbles.

Gaara and Naruto both tumble into the forest below.

You direct Nyoka to land a short distance from where Naruto and Gaara fell, and give her beak an appreciative stroke.

“You saved my life, Nyoka,” you admit. “So I promise, I’ll be along to train with you as soon as possible… so that next time, I’ll be a partner you can rely on.”

“This one is glad to hear you say that with such sincerity,” Nyoka replies warmly, “and looks forward to our next meeting. At long last, it is gratifying to meet with such a dedicated summoner… this one is certain Isoka feels the same, despite the fact that she would never say so.”

You bow politely as Nyoka disappears, then turn your attention back to the congregation of chakra in the nearby forest.

In a small clearing you find Naruto face-down in the dirt, with Temari and Kankuro holding a barely-conscious Gaara up between them. Sasuke has caught them at it, and nobody has moved yet… they’re all too exhausted and hurt to fight. When Temari catches sight of you, Umekiri drawn at your side, her sheer terror is obvious.

“That’s good,” Sasuke pants. “Like this we can fight them.”

But is that wise?

Gaara is clearly a war power for Sunagakure, to the point where releasing Shūkaku was the centerpiece of their invasion plans. And their two respective Kages were fighting each other behind that barrier… that’s the only thing which makes sense, and strategically speaking tying them both down allows the invasion to continue without being impeded by the Hokage. So one of them is probably dead by now.

So if Gaara dies… that’s a problem. The Tsuchikage is almost certainly waiting for an opportunity to launch an attack on his ‘important’ neighbors. So in the case that the Hokage is dead there will be an invasion across your homeland and the Land of Grass against the Land of Fire… into which Sunagakure will probably be drawn. In the case that the Kazekage is dead, the invasion will be across your homeland and the Land of Rivers to the south. And if Gaara and the Kazekage are both dead, the likelihood of invasion instead becomes an absolute certainty.

Gaara may deserve to die. You’re not entirely sure you’re the one to make that judgment, but it’s certainly possible that the world would be better off without him. But if you kill him here, or allow him to die, the geopolitical consequences could very well be disastrous not just for your home, but for all the nations that would be dragged into the subsequent world war.

Are we really just going to let Gaara get away this easily though? I really feel like we should at least attempt a capture and hand off to Sensei, Kakashi, Anbu, Toad Sage?

IC reasoning is thinking if killing him is a confirmation of invasion then having him as a prisoner can be a good deterrent. Of course there's always the risk of Shikaku breaking bad again. I just feel Gaara is too big of a risk to let go free, at least shatter the gourd or something.

Instead of joining Sasuke, you step between him and the Sand siblings and raise your sword.

“What are you doing?” he demands. “These people just invaded my home, and now you’re defending them!?”

“Gaara was the centerpiece of Sunagakure’s invasion plans,” you observe calmly, staring past the tip of Umekiri’s blade to meet Sasuke’s eyes. “If we killed him, how long do you think it would be before the Tsuchikage launched an attack of his own? How many thousands of people in my homeland do you think would die because of it?”

Sasuke scowls and looks away, but doesn’t contest what you’ve told him… because he knows it’s true.

“Good,” you mutter. “There may be another world war some day… but I’m not going to be the one who starts it, nor am I going to sit back and watch someone else start it.”

“Thank you,” Temari begins behind you, only for you to round on her.

“Get out of here,” you order them. “And don’t thank me… you’ll just have to owe me one.”

She looks like she’s about to say something, but then nods instead. “Right. I understand.”

Then she and Kankuro take off, taking Gaara with them.

“Heh,” Naruto chuckles from the ground .”See, Sasuke? Toldja letting them go… was the right thing to do.”

“Yeah, whatever,” Sasuke grumbles. “You’re a real mess, you know that?”

“You’re one to talk,” you counter. “You’re barely on your feet.”

By the time you return to the gates of Konoha, the scale of the damage is clear. Bodies of shinobi lie everywhere, Konoha, Suna, and Oto alike all laid out chaotically wherever they fell. Smoke hangs in the air from tags, bombs, and fire, and the stench of fresh blood and burning bodies is inescapable.

But it seems like Konoha has won the day, driving off their attackers albeit at a heavy cost.

You’re carrying Sakura, while Sasuke is helping Naruto, when a Konoha shinobi finds you. He’s a fairly tall man in a bandana-style headband, with triangular red markings under his eyes and what appears to be a heavy shuriken launching weapon in one hand.

“It’s you kids,” he recognizes your little group immediately. “Asuma-san told us to keep an eye open for you… Kakashi-san is still in the arena. You’ll… understand why when you find out.”

You accompany team Kakashi back to where your whole crazy ordeal began, meeting up with Kakashi-han in the stands which have now been evacuated of civilians. Now all that’s left are a few bodies which haven’t yet been removed, and the victorious shinobi of Konohagakure. But for a victory, the mood seems decidedly grim.

“Here,” Kakashi-han insists, taking Sakura off your hands and laying her aside, well away from the fallen invaders. Sasuke places Naruto nearby before slumping against the wall.

“Is it over?” he mutters. “How bad?”

“It’s… not good,” Kakashi-han admits. “The Third Hokage was killed. We just found out a few minutes ago.”

Naruto and Sasuke both seem shocked at the news.

“Wait… what are you saying, Kakashi-sensei?” Naruto demands weakly. “Quit jokin’ around...”

“Kakashi-han, I have a report for you,” you bow politely. “There have been developments your village should be made aware of.”

“Let’s hear it,” he nods curtly.

“Gaara is the jinchūriki of the One-Tail,” you explain immediately. “After cutting Baki’s arm off I used my summons to track Gaara, but by the time I caught up he had already transformed and Naruto had engaged with a giant summoned toad. I summoned a giant partner of my own and between the two of us we were able to reverse his transformation.”

“Sakura was already out of the fight by then, and Sasuke was exhausted. Because I was the only one left in fighting condition at the end… barely… I insisted that Gaara and his siblings be allowed to withdraw alive.”

Kakashi-han sighs. “That’s a relief to hear… the last thing we need right now is for another world war to break out over this.”

“But they killed Lord Third!” Sasuke protests.

Kakashi-han shakes his head. “No, actually, they didn’t. It was Orochimaru posing as the Kazekage the whole time, so it’s likely that Sunagakure assisted the invasion on his orders.”

“You think the Kazekage was already dead before the exams began?” you realize.

Kakashi-han nods in agreement. “In all likelihood. So for Sunagakure to lose their jinchūriki as well… would all but guarantee a massive strike from Iwagakure.”

“So Naori-san was right...” Sasuke mutters. “I apologize for doubting you.”

“It’s okay,” you shrug. “It wasn’t my village that was attacked, so I can understand that you’d be angry. I would be too in your position.”

“You left part of the story out though,” Sasuke frowns. “That strike you used on Gaara the first time...”

“It’s a new trick I learned,” you reply cheerfully, “called None-of-your-Business-no-Jutsu.”

Sasuke seems like he’s about to protest, but Kakashi-han gestures for him to stop.

“Sasuke, please try to remember that Naori-kun is not a shinobi of our village,” he reminds his student. “As such, it’s well within her right to refuse to discuss the subject.”

“However, I’m curious what sort of a technique could impress you now that you know my own chidori.”

“It was a mass of dense reiatsu,” Sasuke recounts as you narrow your eyes, hand straying towards Umekiri’s hilt. “She didn’t use any hand signs for it.”

“No hand signs?” Kakashi repeats. “You’re sure?”

Sasuke nods. “Positive… but that’s all I can remember.”

Kakashi turns his good eye on you, narrowing it slightly. “I see… so it’s this technique?”

Grasping his wrist with one hand, the Konoha jōnin duplicates the technique you performed in the forest earlier.

Your jaw very nearly drops to the floor.

Sasuke glances at you in obvious confusion as Kakashi addresses you. “I don’t know what he was thinking, but I suppose it’s also not my business to ask questions.”

“So did Jiraiya-han teach you that?” you press quietly.

After being taken aback at first, Kakashi-han shakes his head. “I was taught by my own sensei, who was the one who taught Jiraiya-sensei.”

“I see,” you nod, keeping the information that the technique itself is based on training methods intended for your own clan’s hiden technique. “Since I can’t keep this one a secret, could you at least tell me the name of this technique?”

“It’s called the Rasengan,” Kakashi-han informs you. “An A-rank technique… one which previously only three living shinobi knew. With the passing of Lord Third, that makes two from Konohagakure… and now you.”

“Well,” you sigh dramatically, “at least now I know what you’ll be writing into your file on me.”

Kakashi-han seems… possibly a little uncomfortable at the thought as he allows his rasengan to disappear. “If it were up to me, I’d keep it a secret.”

“But it isn’t up to you.”

“I’m afraid not.”

“Will I still be allowed to rest up here?” you ask with a worried grin. “Or should I start running?”

“It’ll be fine, for now,” Kakashi-han reassures you. “But Konoha… isn’t going to be a pleasant place to be for a while. It may be best to keep a low profile, give people time.”

But will she still be able to buy ramen at Ichiraku?!
>>
>>3948817
The next day the weather is grim, rain having been forecast all day long. Like Kakashi-han suggested you keep to yourself, being the only shinobi from your village still here… and the only foreign ninja at all, so far as you’re aware.

The few times you venture out for food everyone is mourning in their own way. Most restaurants are closed, though Ichiraku’s isn’t shuttered despite it appearing that they’re not open.

Even Ayame’s usual cheer is gone when you see her. “I’m sorry, but we’re closed right now… I’ll get you something, but it won’t be proper ramen.”

“That’s fine,” you insist quietly. “Here.”

You unseal two servings of the ramen you’d gone to the trouble of sealing the last time you were here, setting the two piping-hot bowls down on the counter and offering one to her.

Her downcast expression eases, if only slightly, at the gesture. “Thank you.”

The two of you eat in silence for several minutes, before Ayame speaks up.

“The service will be tomorrow,” she observes. “For Lord Third… and for everyone else. Do you… plan to attend?”

“I don’t know,” you admit. “It’d feel inappropriate.”

“I heard you fought alongside our jōnin yesterday,” Ayame tells you, a hint of admiration in her voice. “I’m sure nobody would mind.”

“This is a time for your village to honor those it’s lost,” you muse quietly. “I’ve seen events like that many times in my own village, so I know well enough how important it is. I haven’t been invited, so even if nobody took offense, it would be inappropriate to just turn up.”

“I’ll honor yesterday’s losses in my own way.”

Ayame turns back towards her ramen. “I see… I understand what you’re saying, Naori-san. It’s… very considerate of you. I hope you know that those of us here who’ve met you appreciate that about you.”

You bow your head slightly. “Thank you, Ayame-han. I know our villages aren’t exactly the closest of friends, but… it’s good to know that doesn’t stop us from at least being kind toward each other when given the chance.”

When your meal is done you politely excuse yourself, with Ayame promising to make you plenty more to replace your supply once the shop opens up again. You spend the rest of the day avoiding people for the most part, keeping Kakashi-han’s suggestion in mind.

Instead of heading for the Hokage’s office, where the memorial is, you head for one of the training grounds. And when you arrive, you notice that you’re not alone. Jiraiya-sensei was already here, staring at a sharp-edged black stone that’s been deeply engraved with countless names in small print.

Even in the drizzle, it’s clear that Jiraiya has been crying.

Without really explaining, you unseal your second parasol and open it, holding it over Jiraiya-sensei. After a moment he takes it from you in one hand, allowing you to take a step away.

“Thank you,” he tells you with a weary sigh. “This stone… do you know what it’s for?”

“A memorial stone,” you reply. “Probably for battle casualties.”

“You must have a lot of these in Amegakure,” Jiraiya-sensei frowns. “Sorry to say, I had a role in two of the wars which are responsible for that.”

“I know,” you insist quietly.

“This stone has the names of all three of my own students on it,” Jiraiya continues. “And now it will bear the name of my sensei. I couldn’t save any of them.”

You briefly wonder which of the names on the stone belong to his students… but then again you have no way of knowing.

“It’s days like this I wonder why I got as strong as I am today anyway, if it’s never enough,” he continues. “If I hadn’t failed to bring Orochimaru back to the village in the first place, he wouldn’t have killed our sensei. If I’d been there sooner, I could have prevented it. In a sense, I’ve failed both of them twice.”

“Everyone dies,” you counter. “It’s always a question of how and when, of course, but we can’t always control those things. What we can control is how we use the time we’re given.”

Jiraiya chuckles lightly. “Who taught you to talk like that?”

“My mother.”

“Your mother must be a splendid woman indeed.”

“She was.”

“I’m sorry.”

“That was years ago,” you shake your head. “So the wound has calloused over, where yours have been re-opened.”

“That’s what you learn when you get old,” Jiraiya sighs. “Those sort of wounds never heal, at least not all the way. Sometimes they make you tougher, but they’re always there.”

“So what are you going to do?”

Jiraiya turns to you. “Hm?”

In one hand, you form a Rasengan. Jiraiya watches, surprised at first, before accepting what you’ve shown him. “I’m impressed.”

“You learned that from one of your students, didn’t you?” you surmise. “Kakashi-han’s former sensei.”

“I did,” Jiraiya confirms.

“Then you have tangible proof that he left his mark on the world,” you continue. “Same as you have done. Same as the Third Hokage did. What you can control is how you honor the Third Hokage’s sacrifice, after having been shaped by his teachings.”

The same way I honor my mother’s seemingly unending grace and kindness, is what you can’t bring yourself to say out loud.

“Your mother must have been a splendid woman indeed,” he repeats, shutting his eyes in contemplation, “to have raised such a daughter.”

“Do me a favor and hold my parasol,” he eventually decides, pulling out a scroll and a brush.
>1/2

You do as he requests, if for no other reason than curiosity, and watch as he writes a short message into the scroll before tying it shut.

“Things are going to get hectic around here,” he informs you, handing you the scroll. “We’re going to be short-handed, and I’ll probably have to chase down the best candidate to be the Fifth Hokage. Feel free to show this to Hanzo if it helps… but I need to ask you to take this to Sunagakure. Specifically, to the elders Chiyo and Ebizō.”

“A message to the elders of Sunagakure?” you repeat. “What for?”

“As Hanzo will soon learn,” Jiraiya explains, “it’s an offer… to coordinate in tracking down Orochimaru, who killed not only the Hokage, but the Kazekage as well.”

>Hanzo will definitely be interested in joining the effort… stability between Suna, Konoha, and Iwa means security for Ame after all.

“How do you know these two elders, and what makes you think I’d be a suitable messenger?”

Your questions are completely reasonable, you think, and Jiraiya is certainly quick to answer. It almost feels like he had his response pre-prepared. So it’s clear at least that he considered the possibility that you’d have serious reservations.

“I maintain certain channels outside the village,” Jiraiya admits, “mostly with other shinobi who are old enough that they’re not part of the regular forces anymore. Mostly they’re people I’ve fought against actually, which can make it kind of awkward.”

“Chiyo and Ebizō are two people like that,” he continues. “As for why I want to send you, that’s for two reasons. Firstly Amegakure isn’t on a war footing against Sunagakure right now, meaning it’ll be easier for you to make contact with them. Secondly, there are certain members of Konohagakure’s council who would take exception to my contacting Sunagakure on my own like this… let’s not name any names, of course.”

“Of course,” you repeat.

“So you could say you’re the perfect person to do it,” Jiraiya concludes. “Though of course I won’t force you.”

“I’ll run it past Hanzo,” you offer calmly. “After all, I owe you at least that much for helping preserve the hiden technique of my clan.”

Jiraiya nods. “I understand your sentiments, and your situation. I’ll be counting on Hanzo’s cooperation too, then.”

It’s another two days before you’ve wrapped up your business in Konoha… there are a surprising number of people you have to say your farewells to, such as Tenten and the blonde brat… no, Naruto-kun, you should call him. Perhaps he’s earned that much.

You even drop by to visit Sasuke briefly in the hospital, which is about as rewarding as talking to a tree, or a wooden fence. He’s pretty beaten up over how little he did against Gaara in the end, you think. But he’s a guy who’s growing much more skilled and mature for his actual age, so you’d be willing to bet he’ll get out of it.

Ayame even makes you a few batches of ramen to store away in scrolls, all free of charge for the meal you gave her when she was feeling low. You offer to pay for the excess beyond the two you unsealed at that time, but she and her father both insist. Needless to say, if you come back to Konoha at some point you’ll probably return to their shop.

Before you leave, the jōnin council gives you files on the performance of the surviving Amegakure candidates as well as dossiers on the less-than-fortunate teams such as Shigure’s who didn’t make it out of the Forest of Death.

Your return trip to Amegakure is far from eventful, aside from the unusually warm reception at the border check point.

The next morning you’re called to speak with Tenshi-sensei, and to deliver the files you’ve been sent with.

“Interesting,” your sensei mutters after giving the files a cursory review. “It seems no candidates will be advanced to the rank of chūnin.”

Wait…

“No candidates, ma’am?” you repeat.

She nods. “I did not consider you a candidate to begin with. Your presence was part of a mission of importance to Amegakure… I already considered your skills to be more than satisfactory for the rank of chūnin, and given what I have read here the possibility of tokubetsu jōnin is not unreasonable.”
>1/2
>>

“But for now… chūnin will suffice.”

You briefly incline your head, deferring to her judgment.

“As for the other subject of interest, I will have to speak with Lord Pain about this,” she continues. “I believe that tracking down Orochimaru is also in our interests as well, however the decision is not mine to make alone.”

“Understood,” you agree. “Will that be all, sensei?”

“For now,” Tenshi-sensei replies. “You are free to do as you wish for now.”

It’s been a month since Karin was brought to Amegakure, and you haven’t heard from her at all, so you’d like to know how she’s been getting on with Team Ibuki. You stop in at the shrine to make a change of clothes, putting on a pleasant-looking yukata with a tasuki over it so that you can keep the sleeves out of your way if need be. Over that you wear a waterproof cloak and a straw hat.

You also check with one of the monks and find that you’ve received a single piece of mail: from Kurotsuchi, of all people, congratulating you on making the finals and wishing you luck in the tournament. Taking a mental note to write her back at some point soon, you head for the training ground where you vaguely recall that the Ibuki twins like to practice.

Sure enough, you find Team Ibuki there having apparently just begun a training session.

“So that’s why you were so adamant,” Harusame realizes, sparing Karin a sidelong glance. “You could’ve just said it.”

“I wasn’t sure she was looking for us,” Karin admits.

“Well, you were right,” you shrug. “How are you getting used to things?”

“It’s a lot of rain,” she chuckles. “You weren’t kidding about that.”

“We’ve been whipping her into shape,” Arashi informs you.

“How so?” you ask curiously, glancing at Karin. “My understanding was you had no actual training.”

“We’ve been doing weapons training,” Karin tells you, “trying to figure out what I’m good at.”

“And?”

“Not much,” Harusame admits bluntly.

“Hey!”

“Do you disagree with her?” Arashi asks.

After a moment, Karin hangs her head. “No...”

“To be fair she’s competent with kunai, if only just,” Harusame offers as a token gesture… which basically means she has no talent for taijutsu.

>That’s fine, you’re a healer and sensor. If you’re in kunai range something went wrong.

Chain weapons might work as well. She's familiar with using the family chains right?
>>
>>3956478
“Have you tried giving her a bow?” you ask, and Harusame immediately scoffs.

“That’s a little old-fashioned, don’t you think?”

“Just because something is new doesn’t mean it’s better,” you counter. “Crossbows have lower projectile mass and are cumbersome to reload. Plus it’s easy to sling a bow across your shoulder for a moment to weave hand seals.”

“It sounds like you’ve given this a lot of thought,” Karin muses, to which you nod emphatically.

“They’re criminally underrated.”

Harusame sighs dramatically. “Alright, let’s see if we can’t find you one to try out.”

Harusame quickly returns with a bow, a thirty-pound draw weight she informs you. There are a few bows at the academy with lighter draw weights in the fifteen to twenty-pound class, but those are literally intended for ten year-olds. At first it seems like Karin needs to get used to it, but she does manage to put a few arrows into the stump you decide to use as a target.

She struggles to prove your point about retrieving and slinging it quickly however, as the string gets hung up on her clothes.

You try not to laugh and fail.

“Sorry,” you chuckle as Karin pouts. “But if you’re gonna make that a thing we’re gonna have to think about your outfit first. And long hair’s out of the question, obviously.”

“C’mon,” you grab Karin by the arm. “I’ve got to buy some stuff anyway, so let’s just make a day of it.”

“I’ll bring her back later!” you promise the Ibuki twins, who shrug and continue training on their own.

After about fifteen minutes of searching you manage to find Ajisai, who’s been studying diligently in the Academy library.

“Hey, we’re going shopping,” you tell Ajisai. “Come with us. we’ll get caught up!”

“I suppose congratulations are in order,” Ajisai muses flatly.

You look at her expectantly. “Sooooo?”

She sighs, then pulls you into a brief sidearmed hug. “You get exactly one.”

Yay.

“Are you two friends?” Karin asks, confused at the dynamic.

“No,” she replies flatly.
“Yes,” you reply at the same time.

There’s a brief pause.

“No,” she repeats.
“Yes,” you repeat at the same time.

There’s another pause.

After going through a few different shops you find a slim-fitting upper garment that should make it easier for Karin to get her bow off and on quickly, with the string across her chest. You also manage to convince Ajisai to spend a little money on a nice new raincloak, which is a rare victory.

As for your own wardrobe, you find a few new thigh-length yukata without sleeves, which obviates the need for the tasuki. They also favor solid colors, so that they’ll go well with the slate-gray flak jacket that’s issued to Amegakure’s chūnin and jōnin.

So that’s where your new starting point is at, and from there you decide to invest in a few light mesh undersuits of the sort that many shinobi use as light armor. These are designed to run from roughly the length of a pair of athletic shorts up to your shoulders, ending without sleeves. A pair of long, flexible shinobi tabi round out your new look. Over that outfit you intend to wear your flak jacket and a pair of arm guards.

“Intimidating enough,” Ajisai nods approvingly.

You simply shrug. “I figure I can play around with how much color and what sorts of patterns will work under a flak jacket.”

“I think it looks good,” Karin shrugs. “It’s too bad once you reach chūnin you lose the right to decide on your own outfit… you have much better fashion sense than the village leaders, it seems.”

“A blind man has better aesthetic sense than most shinobi,” Ajisai agrees.

“The finals were wild,” you recall. “The crowd was massive, and I had to fight a bunch more matches than everyone else because they were waiting for Uchiha Sasuke to turn up.”

“An Uchiha?” Ajisai wonders aloud. “Did you fight him?”

You shake your head. “We were interrupted before the end of his fight with Gaara, a genin from Sunagakure who could control sand.”

You go on to recount your fight with Tenten, and then your match against Hinata. Ajisai and Karin both listen attentively, and when you finish your story it’s Ajisai who asks the question you should have expected.

“And that was when the attack began?”

You nod. “Yeah. I fought a jōnin from Suna and won… at least I count it as a win,” you explain. “Things were kind of a mess after that, and the rest is kind of classified information. Lady Tenshi’s orders.”

“I see,” Ajisai muses.

“Seems you definitely had an interesting time,” Karin nods thoughtfully.

“Yeah, no, it was a bit too interesting for my tastes.”

You spend the rest of the evening together, sharing a nice meal of dumplings and vegetables before heading back to the shrine with your new apparel.

The next morning you’re met by a chūnin you’ve never met, who orders you to return to meet with Tenshi-sensei immediately. When you do, she hands you the scroll from yesterday.

“Lord Pain has decided to go forward with the mission,” she informs you. “Take one genin team if you feel the need, but please let me know now which you intend to take.”

“I’ll be taking Team Ajisai,” you reply. “Team Ibuki has no cohesion yet and I don’t trust Oboro and his teammates.”

“Understood.”

Word is sent for Ajisai and her teammates to assemble at the shrine, and you meet them there with the scroll in hand to explain the mission. Fuyō, a girl with long black hair that covers the left side of her face, is a sensory-type shinobi with a parasol on her back. Her cloak seems to be designed to pull around the right side of her body, hiding her off arm. Suiren is a fairly tall girl with dark hair beneath a bandanna, and her face is covered by a mask. The rest of her body is mostly hidden behind a large poncho over a dark kimono. She too is a sensor, as it turns out.

“Our mission is to take this scroll to Sunagakure,” you inform them. “The contents and sender are both secrets, for the time being, though I can tell you that someone in Konoha requested I take it to the elders in Suna. It was hoped that this might prevent a wider conflict from breaking out that would doubtless involve our own nation.”

“So we’re messengers for the ‘Great’ nations now?” Ajisai frowns.

>We’re doing this under Lord Pain and Tenshi-sensei’s orders.

“We’re under orders,” you observe calmly. “So clearly Lord Pain and Tenshi-sensei believe this to be in Amegakure’s best interests.”

“That should be reason enough.”

It takes you three days to cross the border and find your way through the desert, and eventually you find yourselves sheltering against a fierce sandstorm.

“We shouldn’t be too far,” you insist, sheltering amid some rocks that cut the winds enough to make the situation bearable. “Guess we just have to wait it out?”

“My clothes are gonna be full of sand,” Fuyō complains.

“We’re not alone,” Suiren quietly warns you all.

“How is this even fair!” you protest, unsummoning shuriken to blast away another tangle of scorpions the size of house-cats.

“I hate the desert!” Ajisai protests as she unseals several regular shuriken from pre-prepared sealing tags.

Suiren is too busy holding off even more of the monstrous insects with her parasols, while Fuyō throws kunai with bomb tags attached to them.

“Less complaining,” she yells, “more running away!”

“Kamaitachi!” a familiar voice roars as a massive gust of wind blows away not only the many scorpions, but even the sand for a brief moment. “You’re almost there, keep going!”

Once you reach a narrow gap in a stony wall, a chakra-based barrier is erected to hold out the rest of the scorpions, and you pull down the mask you were using to keep the dust and sand out of your lungs. Your teammates do the same.

“It’s you!” Temari realizes, having lowered her own scarf to expose her face, and she hefts her massive fan.

“Hold it!” you protest, holding up your hands. “We’re not here to fight, promise!”

“How can I trust you right now?” she demands, not lowering her fan at all.

“Why would I come all this way just to kill you?”

After a moment, Temari sighs and lowers her fan. “Sorry, we’re just all wound a little tight here since the invasion.”

“It’s understandable,” you admit. “I don’t take it personally.”

“That’s good to hear,” she replies. “Come on, we’ll get you inside until the storm passes.”

You don’t see much about the village as you pass through due to the sand and wind, except for the dim outlines of buildings. Temari leads you into one of these buildings, you’re not even sure where in the village it’s situated. But you’re happy to have the howling wind and blasting sand on the outside, rather than still being out in it.

“Your team can wait here,” Temari offers. “I’ll have someone bring out some water.”

“Thanks,” you nod curtly, signalling for Team Ajisai to stay here. “Just… try to be cool, okay?”

Ajisai gives you a skeptical look that tells you she intends to do nothing of the sort while in a foreign village, before Temari leads you up a circular flight of stairs. Down a curved hallway she leads you into a meeting room.

“Please wait here, Raishō-san,” Temari tells you. “I’ll look for Baki.”

“I’m not here to speak with Baki,” you tell her. “In fact, I’m pretty sure given how our last meeting went he wouldn’t want to talk to me.”

“Wait, you were the one who cut off his arm?” Temari gasps, wide-eyed.

You nod curtly. “It was him or me. I chose me.”

“Well then,” she continues, “if you’re not here to speak with the council.. then who?”

“Elders Chiyo and Ebizō,” you tell her calmly. “I have a message for them… the sender wishes to keep his identity as much a secret as possible.”

As it turns out, the answer is ‘until the storm subsides’, which you suppose is reasonable.

You and Temari share a tense meal of three small dishes: spiced lentils and pine seeds flavored with mesquite, sweet potatoes and their leaves, and grilled chicken, taken with a tall glass of cool spring water.

“This is pretty good,” you admit your satisfaction with the meal. “Thanks for your hospitality.”

Temari seems to relax slightly at your friendly tone, but is still obviously on guard. “I’m not going to be happy if this turns out to be a problem for our village.”

“It’s not,” you promise her. “It’s just… politically sensitive, you see. Back-channel sort of stuff, between people who according to their villages shouldn’t even be talking to each other.”

“Like the two of us,” she grumbles.

After a brief pause, you unseal a small dish of your own. “Here. It’s sticky rice balls in ginger syrup… not the most popular dessert in Amegakure, but it’s up there.”

She tentatively takes some of your offering, and after watching you take the first bite decides to indulge her curiosity.

“It’s not bad,” she admits. “Thank you.”

It takes another few minutes after your dessert is gone before the two elders finally arrive: you know it’s them because they’re impossibly old. Both of them have lost height in their old age: Ebizō’s eyes are hidden behind long, bushy eyebrows, and Chiyo’s skin is blotched and wrinkled… too much frowning, you think.

“And to what do we owe the pleasure?” Chiyo demands in an old, creaky voice.

“Please stay here, Temari-han,” you address her politely. “You deserve to hear the contents of this message as well.”

“Well?” Chiyo demands. “Let’s see it!”

“This is from Jiraiya of the Sannin,” you summarize, handing the scroll over to Elder Chiyo. “He feels guilty in Orochimaru’s killing of their former Sensei, the Third Hokage. And since he also guessed based on his understanding of Orochimaru’s methods that he would have killed the Kazekage, he reckons you have a shared goal.”

“That certainly sounds accurate,” Ebizō muses, stroking his chin. “Whaddya think, Sis? Is it legitimate?”

“It’s him alright,” Chiyo declares. “Not a forgery. He really means to cooperate in bringing that Orochimaru to justice… as soon as the Fifth is selected, he says.”

“And who will that be?” Ebizō wonders. “Between Princess Tsunade and that Danzo creep, I mean?”

Chiyo shudders. “While there’s no love lost between me and that Slug Princess, I’m sincerely hoping Danzo drops dead before the question is even raised. But I couldn’t be so lucky as to outlive him that easily.”

Temari seems just as lost as you are, but doesn’t seem willing to interrupt her Elders.

“You’ve done both our villages a great service in bringing this here,” Ebizō tells you calmly. “As well as your own village in the bargain… no doubt old Hanzo knows as much himself.”

“So… do you think we’re going to do it?” Temari finally asks. “We’re talking about the man who killed my father, so even if the Council says no..."

“I suppose it’s still technically up to the Council,” Ebizō chuckles grimly.

“But it seems likely,” Chiyo admits. “I may not like Konoha, but right now both our villages need to work out a cease-fire to avoid being wiped out by Iwagakure.”

“That’s just the math behind the situation.”

“I’d assume that given the state of your two villages,” you sigh, “that you’d prefer I remain here until after the Council votes, so I can take a return message back to Jiraiya-han?”

Chiyo cackles briefly to herself. “Yes, yes, that would do fine, I think.”

“Why were you laughing?” Temari mutters.

“She does that to break up the boredom sometimes,” Ebizō admits.

“Anyway, I’ll have someone put your genin team up for now,” Temari offers. “There are dorm-style rooms for brief stays… not exactly luxurious, but decent enough.”

“That should be fine,” you agree. “The more they can keep to themselves though, the better off everyone will probably be.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Temari replies.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think I can turn down such a hospitable offer,” you grumble. “So I will politely accept.”

This time it’s Ebizō’s turn to laugh. “That’s the spirit! Enjoy your youth while it lasts, young lady!”

“I don’t think that has anything to do with youth,” Chiyo scowls at her brother. “And you say I’m the senile one, you old goat!”

“Well then, this is going to be an interesting dinner,” Temari sighs. “Follow me, Raishō-san. I’ll take you to our home. But before we go, I have one request.”

“What would that be?” you ask curiously.

“Please, try not to judge Gaara too harshly,” she asks you in a low, uncertain tone. “He’s been… different since we returned. You’ll see it for yourself, if you give him the chance.”

“Different in what way?”

Temari seems unusually contemplative as she leads you back out into the sandy streets. “Well, even on the way back to Sunagakure after you and that Naruto kid beat him, he… I can barely believe I’m saying this… he apologized to me and Kankuro.”

Well… that seems inconsistent. Maybe he hit his head or something? You suppose Temari’s correct, you’ll see for yourself soon enough.

DC Henchman Quest is draining all the luck. I've never seen as many 90s-100s.
>>
Hmm, it's cool and all that we got the Rasengan, but I hope it won't be a signature attack of ours - guess it's a bit too chakra intensive for that anyway though. It always feels kinda cheap and sue-ish to me when a Quest MC gets the Canon MC's signature move. But I trust Queen to keep it tasteful, we'll probably use it mainly as a surprise heavy hitter or do something creative with it to make it 'ours'.
>>
>>3958509
I doubt when are gonna use it much, Naori has Umekiri-maru and would only need to use it if she needs a heavy hit on something that's not easy to cut
>>
>>3958509
Tbh I've been going for the impression that she doesn't "like" it, and is aware that for her it's something of a dead end as things stand.

But there's definitely still room for creative application, if there's interest.
>>
>>3958542
Wouldn’t rasengan + Naori’s nature transformation equal a laser rasengan? That sounds broken given how if a rasengan catches you unawares it’s gg, and how slow most rasengan are.
>>
>>3958551
Naori's shit at Nature release, so anything involving Nature chakra is also a dead end.
>>
Could we seal rasengan and just have them go off like bombs?
>>
I want Naori's signature to be 'nope zone' area denial and generally making anyone hostile within a thousand feet of her regret the choices that lead them there.

At full bore; Nyoka summoning a storm, storm release thundercloud-mist, swarms of paper shrikes, each one semi-autonomous and carrying one of a variety of seals, while Naori and several paper clones flit around casting genjutsu, throwing paper shuriken with seals on them, and stabbing people.

>>3958640
Utilizing the theory behind Rasengan would be a neat use of seals. There's actual rasengan, or you could get all thematic and combine the compression (a.k.a. inward-facing pressure) and sprial motion to create whirlpools wherever you like.

Eventually Temari leads you to a fairly large home near what you understand to be the large, nearly-spherical building that you just left. Inside you both remove your tabi in the entry, and nearby there’s also a small stand where you hang your flak jacket. Temari removes the white moulded plate she’s evidently taken to wearing over her own outfit on the same rack, before leading you up a short flight of stairs to the second floor.

Now the home takes on a more welcoming appearance, the lights warm and the small round windows keeping the rough desert weather outside.

“Finally!” you hear Kankuro from deeper inside declare. “Took you long enough to get back… you know I’m a walking disaster when it comes to...”

At the sight of you he very nearly drops a large bowl containing some kind of salad.

“Cooking?” Temari finishes the thought.

“What’s she doing here?” he demands in a low voice, as if lowering his voice will keep you from overhearing and potentially taking offense.

“I offered,” she sighs.

“No, I mean in our village,” Kankuro clarifies.

“Mission,” she explains in a single word, taking the bowl of salad off her brother’s hands. “A message from Konoha… if the Council approves it could mean at least a temporary truce.”

“Their leadership already suspects what happened with Orochimaru,” you add. “Need a hand in there?”

You peek into the kitchen past Kankuro to see Temari adding something to the salad, as well as Gaara chopping vegetables with a knife and a look of focus that makes it seem almost like it’s taking his entire focus not to cut through the cutting board and into the countertop.

“We’re fine, almost done,” she replies. “Kankuro, why don’t you take her to the table?”

“Yeah, sure,” he grumbles, pointing you into a different room where you find a large wooden table and carved wooden chairs set around it. “I’ll need to grab another plate and some silverware, but you can sit here if you want.”

“Thanks,” you nod, “I’ll do that.”

Eventually the right number of place settings are on the table, as are several large dishes of various kinds of food and a pitcher of cold water with sliced cucumbers. It’s all delicious, though you can’t help but notice that there’s not a lot of meat and no fish, which means most of their protein must come from plants like onions and probably eggs as well.

“It’s very different from the food in Konoha and Ame,” you muse, having finished a small first helping of each of the dishes. “The cucumber slices in the water really surprised me.”

“It adds a surprising amount of flavor,” Temari agrees.

“Thank you,” Gaara says abruptly, and it takes a moment for you to realize he’s addressing you directly.

“I… don’t understand?” you reply hesitantly.

“I was trying to decide whether to apologize for the trouble I caused you,” he continues, “or thank you for helping to stop me when you did. I decided I would rather thank you… because of you, and Naruto, I have a chance to… consider things.”

“I at least owe you the polite acknowledgement… I think.”

If there's only one Storm style jutsu that Naori can perform for the whole quest, then I think that a Storm Rasenshuriken is a good choice for it. However, such a thing would likely only happen in the endgame and require very high rolls to pull of.

You can’t help but chuckle to yourself. “Wow, what did that Naruto even say to you?”

“What he said was irrelevant,” Gaara admits quietly. “What was significant… was that he was genuinely trying to relate to me. To help me, his enemy. I couldn’t understand that at first, much the same way that I couldn’t understand your treatment of Hyūga Hinata, during the finals.”

“It did not even occur to me at first that you were simply doing what came naturally.”

“I see,” you nod, considering what he has told you.

“What made the biggest difference,” Gaara continues, “was when I considered the number of people I have killed, compared to the number of lives you likely saved by sparing my life. The scale of the difference, the broader significance of your simple choice not to kill one person, stunned me.”

“I once though that the proof of my worth was in my killing of others. After encountering you and Naruto, I began to wonder whether that was the only way to prove my worth, and if it was not… whether I would prefer to take a different path.”

“And this is your decision?” you ask him. “To be a different sort of person than you were until we battled?”

He nods resolutely. “It is. I can only hope that my own village gives me the opportunity to act on this decision.”

“I’m sure they will, Gaara,” Temari tries to reassure her younger brother.

Kankuro however shakes his head. “I’m not convinced… I can realize that something’s different with you now, but I’ve lived with you. I’ve seen the difference.”

>I tend to agree with Temari. Even I can tell from his words, and his attitude, that something has changed.

“I tend to agree with Temari,” you admit. “Even I can tell that something’s different, and so if you act on your beliefs for a few months? I can see people’s thoughts and feelings shifting.”

“I don’t disagree,” Kankuro nods in agreement. “It’s going to take effort though.”

“I’ll remember that,” Gaara nods as well. “I don’t expect it will be easy.”

“Well,” Temari eventually declares, picking up some of the dishes. “I’ll clean up.”

“Would you like a hand?” you ask politely.

She shakes her head, determined in her reply. “No, I’ll handle it.”

“Right,” you nod curtly. “Just thought I’d offer.”

A few minutes later, as Temari and Kankuro are still cleaning, Gaara speaks up. “I have to admit, the finer points of ‘hospitality’ still confuse me.”

“Yeah, no, it’s a lot like anything else involving two people,” you shrug. “It takes both the host and the guest considering one another to do it right… take my position just now for example. I’d have been happy to help Temari clean, and some other people might be happy to accept. But Temari refused, because that’s part of her concept of hospitality.”

“I see,” he nods, thinking about it. “I guess it’s not dissimilar to what you were saying about cuisines being different?”

“Yeah, actually,” you agree. “Like here it seems like offering water to visitors is part of the expected hospitality. In our village, hot barley tea is usually what we offer visitors.”

“We all share that regardless of nationality, I think,” Gaara muses.

“I’d agree.”

“Do you mind if I ask how Baki-han is doing?” you ask hesitantly. “Last I saw him, he… looked rough.”

“I haven’t seen him myself,” Gaara admits quietly. “Ask Kankuro.”

When Kankuro and Temari are finished cleaning up, you repeat your question as Gaara suggested. Kankuro immediately looks uncomfortable, but answers you anyway.

“He’s still trying to learn the puppet technique to control the replacement,” he explains. “But he’s not an elite jōnin for nothing… he’ll get the hang of it.”

“He didn’t recover the arm?” you ask curiously. “I was certain the cut was clean enough that it would be easy to reattach.”

Temari shakes her head. “No time, he told us. When our invasion started going bad it was chaos… he was much too busy making sure as many of our shinobi survived the withdrawal as possible.”

“Admirable that his focus was on that and not himself,” you admit. “Almost enough to make me regret dismembering him.”

“It was you or him,” Gaara reminds you. “The shinobi of our village are very dedicated in battle. Had you not landed a solid blow on him, he would have killed you with no second thoughts.”

“He warned us about you, you know,” Temari frowns. “Said you were more than Kankuro or I could take on our own. After seeing you fight Gaara, and seeing what you did to Baki-sensei, I think I can understand why.”

“That’d certainly be preferable,” Temari admits. “So… you have any burning desires to address while you’re still here? Or would you rather just turn in? I’m sure it’s been a long trip.”

“There’s plenty of space in the dorms,” Kankuro offers, “since nobody’s gonna turn up in the middle of this storm.”

“We have a spare futon here,” Temari counters… though it’s not phrased as a counter per se, she does seem rather insistent that there’s an alternative to the dorms. “It wouldn’t be a bother at all.”

“Thanks.”

You find your way back to the structure where you started, where a uniformed chūnin allows you access into a second-floor hallway. You eventually find the doors to your team’s rooms open, so you poke your head in to find Team Ajisai playing cards.

“Where have you been?” Ajisai asks you curiously. “Don’t tell me the meeting went that long.”

“Well, to illustrate where I’m at right now,” you sigh dramatically, “lemme tell you about the guys I met while I was in the Leaf village. You’ve got the broody emo one, the hyper spastic idiot, the lazy shadow kid with the pineapple hair, the fat one, another broody one but with creepy eyes, the amazing fighting monobrow, the rude kid in his pajamas who plays with dolls, and the red-headed serial killer.”

“Of those, the red-headed serial killer is actually a kinda nice guy once you get to know him,” you admit, “but he’s still got a ways to go before I’d consider dating him. The broody emo one is cute, but he’s got a rotten personality, and I guess Shikamaru’s okay? Like there’s nothing wrong with him, but we never actually talked.”

“Can we just talk about the fact that you literally called one ‘the fat one’ and left it at that?” Suiren points out with a frown. “I didn’t expect you to be the type to body-shame.”

“It’s his clan’s hiden I think,” you clarify. “They put on extra weight then convert it to chakra when they fight all out, and expand parts of their bodies. That sort of thing… it’s probably a bit callous to call him ‘fat’, but it’s literally true. It’s his entire fighting style.”

“Well...” Suiren muses, taken somewhat aback at the deluge of information. “I guess that’s a thing that exists in my world now. Huh.”

“And the girls you’ve met are any better?” Ajisai presses, not one to give up.

“Fū is too pure to think of in such base terms,” you insist with a scoff. “She’s like an energetic little puppy… so happy and friendly it’s infectious. I owe Kurotsuchi for pulling through for me and Saadaki when we nearly died, and Temari was the only tolerable one on her entire team at first. She’s also gone out of her way to be hospitable and friendly since we arrived, which is a nice change of pace. As for Ayame, the ramen girl, she’s just nice to talk to. Super normal girl talk, no shinobi stuff.”

“Tenten has a similar style to mine, though not as developed,” you continue, “so there’s a nice sense of professionalism. But the only other girl I got to know at all was Sakura… kind of a waste of everyone’s time really. No noteworthy skills, no interests to speak of, no real presence at all.”

She is the purest little sister and should be kept that way
>But the only other girl I got to know at all was Sakura… kind of a waste of everyone’s time really. No noteworthy skills, no interests to speak of, no real presence at all.”
Shots have been fired, but definitely well deserved.

Whoa we actually remembered her name? Thought we would just call her the pink haired one.

Sakura means Cheery blossoms, which are pink. So her name is basically pinkie anyways.

“Gee, sure sounds like you paid a lot more attention to the girls,” Suiren observes.

“You even brought one home,” Ajisai adds.

“That’s right!” Fuyō chimes in. “I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about that.”

“That’s because she’s my distant cousin,” you make a face. “We’re literally related, dummy.”

“Oh,” Fuyō makes a face as well. “Sorry ‘bout that, my mistake.”

“Well then,” Ajisai presses. “Name a guy you’d actually be interested in, if you can.”

>I bet Kakashi’s pretty handsome under the mask.
>Gaara… maybe. If he keeps on this new path of his.
>I’d be interested to know more about Shikamaru.

Come one, Naori. "Distantly related" might mean you're so far removed that you may as well not be. It's not like you have a family tree to check and make sure. Also this world has an anachronistic Japan vibe, so cousins are probably fair game anyway.

>>3959098
>Gaara… maybe. If he keeps on this new path of his.
Jinchuriki stuff that may cause conflict with Tenshi-sensei later, no canon love interest, not a spazz, no anime cough of blood sickness. He's honestly my second choice.

My first is Ayame because I'm coming around to the normie love-interest idea. It's just so unlike any other option that's usually pursued in those fanfic quests. Where everyone wants to push their waifus or husbandos, or have eugenics children that are uber strong with both parents' powers, or elevate a character to be way stronger and more important. Just a nice person to love without any additional baggage.

“Well, there is sort of one guy,” you admit hesitantly. “Tall, dark, handsome… only problem is I don’t even know his name.”

“What?” Suiren asks curiously. “Why not?”

“He’s the guy who gave me this eye,” you explain, tapping your left cheek right where the scar ends. “Saved my life, and Saadaki’s… carried me all the way to Iwagakure for treatment. Never even had a chance to thank him.”

“Well, I hope you get the chance to meet him again some day,” Ajisai muses thoughtfully. “And honestly, I was mostly just teasing.”

“Yeah, I know,” you shrug. “Though to be fair… some of my mother’s patrons were women. So it’s not like it’d be weird to me either.”

“Really?” Ajisai wonders. “I didn’t know that.”

You nod. “Certainly less common, of course. And I’ll admit Ayame’s pretty cute.”

“Wait, what?”

You decide to leave them wondering about that… their fault really for starting this whole discussion in the first place.

The next day you suggest that Team Ajisai take the time to have a look around Sunagakure… it’d be good for them to see the rest of the world up-close, although you’re sure to insist that they avoid causing a fuss while they’re here. After all, they’re in someone else’s home so its only appropriate to be on their best behavior. Meanwhile, Temari agrees to show you around the village.

Now that the sandstorm has blown through you can see the whole village… lots of round, plain-looking buildings with small windows clustered into what feels like a large crater, or either the center of a roughly circular array of mountains. They store water pretty aggressively, and the place is extremely urbanized due to a lack of any sort of space for crops. Temari explains that your food yesterday came from a relatively small area of land adjacent to the Land of Rivers to the east, which was formerly part of a much larger Land of Fire, and long before that part of a dominant Land of Grass.

Her tour ends in the Suna Medical Herb Garden, located near the hospital. It’s the one place in Sunagakure where certain times of medicinal herbs can be grown, vital in treating illnesses and poison.

“It’s funny,” you chuckle. “We have the exact opposite problem back home… too much water.”

“It’s hard to imagine,” Temari admits. “I don’t know how I’d even react to seeing that much water in one place.”

“We’ll probably never know,” you sigh. “Security’s pretty tight, and we’re even less fond of outsiders than most hidden villages, so you’re almost certainly never going to be able to visit.”

“Our village is like that too, a little,” she tells you. “Though from the sound of it not as extreme. I wonder how true that is for the other villages… Konoha never seemed all that unwelcoming.”

“Every rule needs a good exception,” you shrug.

Eventually you’re obliged to part with Temari and her siblings, as the Council renders a relatively swift decision: they intend to cooperate in Jiraiya’s scheme, as soon as the Fifth Hokage gives their blessing to his plan on Konoha’s end. They give you and Team Ajisai a scroll to take to Konoha with their decision, intending for you to deliver it to Jiraiya himself.

Temari is also certain to give you cloaks for the desert, and a fresh supply of water… you and Ajisai both seal it away together with cucumber slices for flavor, the little touch having made a definite impression on your taste buds. Then she sees you off at the entrance to the village, wishing you safe passage through the desert.

The trip across the Land of Rivers is as uneventful as you’d imagine, nothing but idyllic rolling fields and the rivers and streams that give the nation its name and define so much of its character. Not a single threat to be found, despite you and team Ajisai’s two sensor-nin trying your hardest to find one. Eventually you arrive in Konoha, again without much fanfare, after briefly arguing with the guards at the gate regarding the legitimacy of your mission.

“So, it’s you?” the man you recognize as Asuma-sensei scratches his head, before glancing up at the guard who called him in. “I’ll take it from here.”

“So why are you here?” he asks as he escorts you into the village.

“Message for Jiraiya-han,” you explain. “Too sensitive for a carrier bird. I was hoping you or Kakashi-han could tell me where he is.”

“He’s away from the village right now,” Asuma-sensei explains, lighting up a cigarette. “As for Kakashi… he’s in the hospital right now recovering, so you can’t speak with him.”

“What, is he sick?” you wonder aloud.

Asuma-sensei shakes his head grimly. “There was an incident. Two guys from outside the village worked him over pretty good, that’s all I can really say.”

They actually beat Kakashi-han? They must be quite some shinobi, since if you’re assuming correctly Kakashi wasn’t fighting them alone.

“Well then, what now?” Ajisai asks quietly.

Speak of the devil and Itachi will appear.
Thanks for the run Queen.

We kinda need to go after Jiraiya. If we leave the note here no doubt it will end up in Danzos hands and that is just not gonna be a good thing.

A Thought occurs, in this timeline Lee is liable to be even more overpowered, because Gaara did not crush his everything like in canon.

Sauce man is going to have significantly more trouble outrunning the Konoha nin if it reaches that point, because Lee can probably body any single one of those retrieval nin if he unleashes the gates, and quite possibly still have room in the tank to catch up or worse.
>>
>>3959799
Just remember that Neji (who is as strong as Lee) barely won his fight in canon. Granted, it was a bad matchup for him, but you can't take the sound five for granted. I'm actually more interested to know if Neji got his character development, given that he did not get beat by Naruto and get the 'hard work' speech, but did get stuck in a tie by Lee, the embodiment of the 'genius of hard work' theme in the exams.
>>
>>3959825
While true
Lee just after getting out of surgery on his limbs was tying against the leader of the sounds five while drunk, totally unable to use the gates.
>>

Was Kimimaro using his curse seal at all vs Lee?
