/qst/ - Quests

In the realm beyond our own, the Dark Place, there are monsters, oozing into our realm through every available crack. Some seek to rule this world which they see as an Eden, some must feed on the soul and flesh of mortal men, and others still play with men as though toys, mutilating, killing, and driving men to madness of nothing save sadism and spite. They rule the night, claiming the innocent in their sleep, or wondering the dark streets, looking for wayward victims.

You have seen them for what they are, abominations, and in this, you must stand. you, the hunters, the saviors of the mortal sort. you must drive the horror from your reality, you bring light to where the darkness thrives, you must retake the night!

Hic genuflectitur Humanity denegat!

Welcome to Hunter Quest
>>
>>4016668
*How do I play?*
You're a bunch of human monster hunters, investigating things that could lead to monsters.
*How Do I Make a Character?*

You have 25 points to spread between 6 attributes
>Might: Physical Strength
>Vigor: Ability to Take Damage
>Will: Mental Fortitude, as well as Resolve and force of personality
>Genius: Perception and Mental Acuity
>Finesse: Dexterity and Carefulness
>Agility: Quickness and Nimbleness

Each attribute starts at 1 and may be increased to 10, all levels beyond 5 will add +1 to all checks with that given attribute, and all below adding a -1, with 5 being neutral
So for example 7 in agility will give +2, where as +8 giving a +3.

Looks like, for the time being, we're running a solo mission

It has been several days since you've beaten that thing in the alley. It has haunted your mind in a sum of time, that terrible gaunt figure. It act like any other predator or petty thief when you approached it, but... it wasn't
A rotting carcass vaguely obscured by the darkness, something about it, strangely pitiful. It moaned like a junkie with a fresh smack as it tore chunks from the desiccated corpse as you waltzed from the shadows. As you capped it in the knee and kicked it to death, you felt like you did it and the universe a favor.
You think you've seen more of them, wondering the dark street, looking for victims, or perhaps they're carron scavengers, this city's the place do such a thing.

Then there was the thing yesterday. The gangers finally found you out and retaliated. The thing was how you killed. you somehow directed all of your hate into them, all of your burning disgust went into there fuckwit leader, and he caught on fire, no lighter fluid, no match, no anything, just your hate.
Once the scum realized you could light them on fire with your mind, they scattered, and have yet to fuck with you since.
You have not left your house since.
You hear a knock on the front door

You look out the peephole, there is a professional sort stands at your door. He doesn't appear to be packing heat.
>>
>>4020479
I ask “Who is it?” from behind the door.
>>
>>4020520
"I'm here to discuss some things with you, Mr. Price. Some things which trouble you, no doubt". Sounds as professional as he looks.

"I am a man of trade not too different from your current one. I have been sent to see if you're interested in combating greater threats to the common good."

I grip my MAC-10 tighter and open the door ever so slightly so that it still obscures the firearm. “So what are you with the government or something?”
>>
>>4020605
"I'll be frank, you've seen the monsters, right?"
>>
>>4020610
“Monsters? The craziest thing I’ve seen have been some whacked out looking junkies. They were pretty freaky looking but I wouldn’t call them monsters.”
>>
>>4020631
"You saw this", he flashes a picture of the thing you kicked to death, well it's corpse, "If you did, there is very likely something much worse haunting this fine city. We can talk about it and the other occurrences that have lead to staying home over the course of the past day."
>>
>>4020658
“That sounds nice and all, but you still haven’t told me who you’re working for. You’ve got to be part of some sort of organization if you’re following me around like that.”

"I can tell you everything, and as a sign of goodwill". He pulls a Colt Python from his jacket and empties the cylinder. The flips the gun as to hold the barrel and offers you the weapon.

“What’s the name of your agency and why have you been following me?”
>>

"We are are The Hunters, it's informal I now, we are a loose network currently, and we have a few reasons to follow you, firstly, have you gotten "the gift"?"

“I haven’t gotten a gift since I was seventeen. Also Hunters? So you guys just go walking around looking for any of those creepy looking junkies in alleys?”

>>
>>4020786
“Yeah it was, I’m still trying to figure out what that was all about. Are you gonna tell me I’m an alien or something?”
>>
>>4020819
"No, your human, we all can do it, most just don't know it, they refuse to. It's magic, I suppose is what we must call it at this time. Now that thing you saw it wasn't human, you've seen many of them, likely, they disguise themselves so they can feed uninterrupted, Ghouls we call them, cowardly scavengers."
>>
>>4020838
“I’m guessing this city isn’t the only place that has this problem then. Where are they coming from?”
>>
>>4020850
"Your taking the fact that magic is really quite well. The ghouls and the other things of their sort come from outside reality as we understand it, The Dark Place we call it, and there, the bad things within man manifest, our fears, our hatreds, our less then desirably urges, they take on a physical form."
>>
>>4020861
“That magic saved my skin, I can’t really complain. Is there some way to use magic to destroy the Dark Place? Because something tells me that people won’t be turning into saints anytime soon.”
>>
>>4020889
"No, we can't even seal the crack into our realm, but we Hunters can kill what comes through. How many ghouls have you seen in the area."

“Maybe half a dozen or so. I just though they were just a bunch of rough looking people so I can’t really be sure. If there’s no way to stop them from coming, I guess you Hunters handle things the old-fashioned way.”
>>

>>4020932
"The number means one just drifting into town goes from unlikely to incredibly unlikely. They're not dangerous in and of themselves, just scavengers who attack only when cornered, disgusting and pitiable, yes, but not a danger. However, they're smart, they've learned to follow predators, some mundane, large animals, which is unlikely in this urban setting, and serial killers, which would've made it into the news by the time they caught wind of it. It could be demons, could be succubi, could be any number of things.
>>
>>4020962
“So how do you track down these things? Better yet, how did you find me? I know you’re with a group called the Hunters but there must be something that tips you guys off.”
>>
>>4020977
"There are pockets of those who have seen magic and monsters firsthand, many decide to stand against the invaders, my father did work in uniting us under a single cause. We get a tipoff from the local informants, we send in somebody to clean up before anyone else can be maimed or driven to insanity, from there it was magic, gossip and detective work to find you."
>>
>>4020995
“Well, better you than some pissed off gangsters or cops. So I’m guessing you’re here to offer me some sort of deal?”
>>
>>4021004
"First, you got the pulse here, I need hearsay, and you're one who can help, the nearby cell just knows about the ghoul you geeked."

You try to lift john, and you manage to aswell, but you fall back, onto a pile of scrap, cutting yourself, it hurts, but you'll live, and it makes tetanus shot worth the money too.
You hear a noise from the south, loud clangs and scrapping, followed by a loud roar.
You feel like you should get out now.
>>
>>4029805
“Shit.”

I pick myself up and look towards the direction of the noise. I turn to John M.

“You recognize that sound?”

"I really hope don't cause if I do..."
there is a clanging foot step, it's about to round the corner.

“Well we aren’t getting out of here without a fight. That thing will be on us before we leave the lot.”

I pocket a bit of scrap metal in case things get up close and personal.
>>

It turns the corner, a 9 ft. tall roughly humanoid heap of scrap metal and sharp objects. It looks around expectedly.
Mannfred is taken aback somewhat.
"Quietly, Golems are strong but stupid and blind beyond 30 ft. of themselves"

He lets out a scream, you can almost make out the word "NO". It runs towards Mannfred.

In the heat of the moment, I ignore the exchange between John and the golem. (I may not have even heard it) I back the car up and prepare to run over the golem.

“Look out John!” I call out as I prepare to ram the creature.

I hit the brakes and put the car in park. Climbing out of the car, I approach John.

“What was that all about? Where did you get that knife?”
>>

"There is a man dying in the car, we'll talk on the way to the hospital"

“Right.” I say as I take one last look at the train yard.

“Let’s ride.”

"So, what the first question?"
>>
>>4031665
“What was that thing, and what was it’s connection with that knife you shot? Was that supposed to be its heart?”
>>
>>4031680
"It was a golem, as we've come to call them, and the knife was more of a brain"
>>
>>4031691
“Well he wasn’t too sharp for leaving his brain out for anyone to take it. How’d you get your hands on it?”
>>
>>4031706
"They hide it in plain sight. I used magic to detect the thoughts coming from it and from there it was following the signal."
>>
>>4031710
“If I were a golem, I’d just stick the damn thing deep into that mound of scrap it calls a body. I figure only a car or a cannonball would get through all of that.”

I turn back to John N, “How are you holding up?”
>>
>>4031722
He's breathing, he appears to have stabilized a bit.
"When bringing it down, it explodes like a nailbomb"
>>
>>4031759
“Looked more like a poof than a boom to me but you’re the expert here. Any idea why it attacked John? I know those ghouls would’ve eaten him but I get the feeling that golems aren’t carnivores.”
>>
>>4031789
"Golems are born from murder, more closely, murder weapons. At the minute of the killing, the terror and pain of the victim are bonded onto the implement and should make its way into the Darkness Outside Reality, that negative energy animates it, gives it thoughts and hatred. It makes it's way out, pulls together a body, and goes to kill its former master. with many a cultist or spree killer who knows too much dumping their tools of sacrifice into the Dark Place, think they were disposing of evidence, instead, they make a monster, intent on their death. After that, being things of murder, they kill whatever they can find, being able to feed only on brutality, carnage, and horror."
>>
>>4031812
“Well that’s one way to gain a new hobby. From what you said, John must’ve simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know you said that any permanent solution wasn’t possible, but if simple murders are enough to make those things, this place will be overrun within a month. These monsters have too many sources and none of them are running out anytime soon.”
>>
>>4031844
"We have friends on the outside, things that formed from what we consider good thoughts, there has been a war going on and have yet to go beyond that. We don't know who they are exactly, but we can't argue with supposedly powerful allies."
>>
>>4031866
“Well what do these ‘good guys’ do? Do they have something to do with all of the magic powers business?”
>>
>>4031881
"They're vauge currently, but consider they form from our hope and light, I'd guess not"
>>
>>4031904
“Well they’d better pull their weight. If we weren’t here to save John he would’ve been killed for nothing. I know that others won’t be as lucky.”
>>
>>4031908

I take a seat and get comfortable,”I’d like to stay here in case anything happens.”

I turn to John M, “I’ll guess you’ll have to pay me another visit seeing as you’re a busy man and all.”
>>

"Of course, we were out in the country hunting and found him out and about, Should I live your rifle at your house?"

“Yes, that would be a big help, thanks. Sorry the trip got a bit derailed.”

He exits the build, with another friendly nod, and you lay back in the chair, it's a nice rest after the Golem.
It feels good to help folks, as always, and seeing that you're into deep to turn back, you'll have to look into the local hunter circle. You wait for an hour or so. The doctor comes out.
"Mr.... uuhh, what is your name, and your relationship to the patient"

You walk home, it's not all too far. On your porch is a box, within is the SMG and a few other gifts, a frag, a grappling hook, a badge, and a letter, you guess you're official now.
You walk inside and collapse on your bed before you start reading the letter
"Welcome to the cause.

>(Was I any good?)

You don’t need to worry about that. The storytelling was good, the mechanics were solid and allow for a lot of strategy and creativity. Your posting was consistent and you were flexible throughout the thread. As far as the game goes, things can only go up from here. I’m with playing through as a solo act, but hopefully a new player or two will join.
