You are Raishō Naori, a member of the mercenary group Akatsuki currently posing as an instructor during a chūnin exams being held jointly by the Hidden Sand and the Hidden Leaf.

The current survival battle stage, whose format basically matches the exams that you took by yourself, is being held in a place called “the Demon Desert”, which is basically interchangeable with “the Forest of Death”. You have to wonder if every great village has a place like this, and if so what the Mist, Stone, and Cloud call theirs?

Maybe “the Swamp of Suffering”? Or perhaps “the Quarry of Confusion”? Or “the Mountains of Mayhem”?

In any event, the weather has taken a turn for the unnatural with a massive sandstorm that upon closer inspection with the Sharingan seems to have at very least been brought here, if not caused by a shinobi deliberately. It’s likely that this was for the purpose of staging an attack on Gaara, which he’s inviting by charging into the desert himself… probably, you reason, because his own student and many genin from his village are being put in danger.

You also have your own friends to worry about.

“Kuchiyose: Nyoka!”

With a bit of thumb blood, you summon Nyoka to your side where you’ve taken shelter against the worst of the wind and the sand.

“This situation has deteriorated,” she observes.

“I need a minute,” you tell her. “We’re going to fix this problem together. Sound good?”

She bows her great head. “This one is ready to assist.”

You cross your fingers in a cross-shape in front of you, forming a unique hand seal.

“Shadow Clone!”

Your shadow clone hops up onto Nyoka’s back and explains the idea. “We’ll head up, I’ll supply you chakra to extend the range of your weather control. Can you handle it if I’m in Sage Mode?”

“This one can utilize senjutsu chakra,” Nyoka confirms, “as she was raised in a great sage region. It is mixing natural energy into this one’s body which she has difficulties with.”

“Awesome,” you nod curtly. “I’ll work from the ground to directly assist any genin teams we run into. We’re going for the Amegakure teams first, then for Fū’s team.”

The first team you come across is Team Ibuki, who have sheltered near a small oasis. The weather lifts thanks to Nyoka’s weather control ability, allowing them to come out from between a pile of rocks.

“You’re here?” Karin asks quizzically. “What’s happening?”

“What’s with this weather?” Harusame demands.

“Someone who’s not in the exams is causing this sandstorm,” you inform them, “so the proctors and jōnin are stepping in.”

“Thanks for that,” Arashi grins. “This was getting pretty miserable.”

You quickly unseal some emergency equipment for them: masks and cloaks to keep out the dust, fresh food and water, and a small domed shelter.

“I need to go find Ajisai’s team now,” you tell Karin. “So take care of yourselves, okay? We’ll take care of this, so then you can just focus on your own mission again.”

Before you go, Karin catches your attention. “Hey… thanks for coming out here after us.”

“Don’t mention it,” you reply. “Seriously… only Gaara knows I’m out here, so it might become a problem if anyone else heard.”

“Thanks, but we’re fine,” Ajisai greets you when you reach her next. She already had shelter sealed into a tag, which she and her team are making use of.

“Good to know,” you shrug. “But it cost me nothing to make sure.”

“Thank you,” Suiren bows politely. “But as Ajisai said, there’s no need to trouble yourself.”

“And I know that,” you insist, “but it’s no trouble, really. I just wanted to make sure… and to be honest with you, there’s a reason I went after Team Ibuki first and that reason’s leading your team.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” Ajisai smiles calmly. “Good luck with the other teams.”

You’re not surprised when you find that Fū’s team was also having zero trouble with the weather.

“Hey~!” she greets you cheerfully. “Are you the one who stopped that sandstorm?”

“Yeah,” you admit. “I should’ve figured your team would be fine, but I wanted to make sure.”

“Oh yeah?” Fū asks. “Why’d you assume that?”

“Because you have two jōnin on your team,” you explain. “Come on now, it’s not like it’s that big of a secret.”

>Anyway, I’m off to go try and further counter this storm, give other teams some relief.
>I’m going to go join up with Gaara. See what he needs me to do.

“I’m going to go find Konoha’s jōnin-senseis,” you declare. “It’d be best if we went our separate ways.”

“Awww, maaan!” Fū pouts. “That’s so lame.”

“It’s probably for the best,” Kegon observes. “Fū, we need to get moving.”

“Oh, alright...”

You continue searching the desert for the jōnin-senseis, and eventually allow Nyoka to return to the forest as the sandstorm subsides… it seems like whatever it was meant to do has been accomplished already, which is concerning. All the more reason to try and track the others down.

You find yourself out in the middle of the desert, a good distance away from where you met Fū, when you sense a change through your tracking tags.

“What the...”

You can sense that Gaara is in distress, and his chakra is fluctuating. Fū is heading there at top speed, her own chakra clearly agitated.

Something’s clearly going on here, and it’s exactly what you’ve been waiting for. There’s no time to waste, you’ve already been caught by surprise by this turn of events…

… you have the presence of mind to summon Kijani.

“I need you to fly ahead and summon me,” you tell him. “Take this sealing tag, I’ll guide you in.”

“With respect,” he replies calmly, “are you not faster than myself in Sage Mode?”

“I may not have time to stand still!” you reply. “That, and nobody here knows about that… so please don’t mention it so casually, Kijani-han.”

“Right, forgive me Naori-dono,” he apologizes as you throw a paper tag at him.

“Not a problem,” you admit. “My fault for not making that clear from the start.”

When Kijani summons you before disappearing himself, the situation seems fairly grim.

A team of very green-looking Sunagakure genin are struggling alongside Team Guy, who are trying to deal with a lute-playing monk whose chest is connected to a giant cocoon of chakra threads. Chakra is being slowly drawn out from inside the cocoon and into the monk… the tracking markings are inside that cocoon.

… the chakra being drawn from each is the same, confirming what you had suspected this whole time but didn’t want to think about: that Fū is a jinchūriki. You try to rationalize it away as being a trick of your imagination, but the chakra feels exactly alike to you. You even briefly unseal the Sharingan to try and disprove it to yourself, only to find that it has the same characteristics you remember from fighting Shukaku, and they’re almost exactly alike in that regard.

There’s absolutely no way to deny it.

Your guilt however is outweighed by the necessity of action. Regardless of what will happen to Gaara and Fū in the future, what Akatsuki has planned for them, they need your help in this moment.

A clarification: no one would have to see direct evidence that Naori is using sage mode, as she's not going to just bust it out and start waving it around. But it WILL scare Neji shitless, as Naori would have IC reasons to assume.

This monk is using fūinjutsu… specifically, a fūinjutsu that requires use of both of his hands, and that requires him to stay perfectly still while using it. Why in the world would anyone use a technique like that in combat!?

But it’s a small blessing for you that your opponent is that idiotic, since it makes it fairly easy for you to know your next steps.

The shinobi gathered here begin to make their move, coordinating to get behind the monk without exposing themselves to his chains. The two Taki jōnin quickly take his back and line up for an assault with shadow-cloned shuriken and water shuriken. But the monk responds by raising a barrier around himself that forms over the chains, effectively sealing himself off. Next the tune changes again, and the glowing barrier starts spitting waves of senbon like rain at the shinobi as they try to get something going against the monk.

The girl from the Sand uses a spinning cord weapon to defend her teammates, and Tenten does the same for Lee with a kusarigama. Neji just spins in place releasing chakra to raise a barrier, and Kegon forms a shield of water that protects both himself and Yōrō.

This is your moment.

“Kongō Fūsa Midare!”

You give this new technique a name as you mainfest a golden chain to spin, shielding yourself through the senbon attack as you charge in. Once the senbon stop you add a second chain, before wrapping them around the monk’s chains.

The monk changes his tune… and suddenly finds that his own sealing technique has stopped working.

“That technique!” he demands. “What have you done!?”

“What comes naturally,” you reply with a smirk.

Where the cocoon had previously slowed the chakra flow out of Fū and Gaara’s bodies your fūinjutsu halts it altogether, and if you wanted to you could even direct the tailed beast chakra into yourself… though most likely not without consequences, the most obvious of which being Fū and Gaara would still probably die unless you performed your pseudo-jinchūriki seal on it.

You could also completely dispel the fūinjutsu by sealing the chakra chains you have tied up into a scroll.

What you can’t do is kill the monk himself, since there’s obvious parallel between his technique and the mutual-killing technique of the Fūma clan and you can’t completely discount the possibility.

While you consider the situation carefully, you notice that Neji has entered the cocoon.

“No!” the monk protests. “Can’t you see why we’re doing this? Those… those things are more of a threat to our own village than they ever were to our enemies in war!”

“Oh no, the child we sealed a chakra monster into as a baby and then treated like dirt for more than a decade had some emotional issues growing up!” you mock the monk, affecting a tone of surprise. “Who could have predicted such a turn of events? How could we have possibly anticipated… yeah no, shut your mouth.”

You people are the ones who decided to start sealing away the tailed beasts as weapons,” you snarl back at him… this isn’t like you, but you can hardly help it. “And now just because you’re a little scared Fū and Gaara deserve to die?”

“And you!” you snap, knocking Kegon and Yōrō out of the air with another Kongō Fūsa chain, this time from your right shoulder, as they try to attack again. “Did you even stop to consider that this technique might be a mutual kill-type seal?”

“Or did you just see a jinchūriki at risk of capture and decide to risk killing her instead?”

The two Taki jōnin stare at you in surprise… it seems they hadn’t even considered the possibility that had you immediately worried, that killing the monk could also kill Fū and Gaara. They didn’t even stop to think about it. That tells you all you need to know.

“… you don’t even see them as people anymore, do you?” you muse, almost amused at the situation now. How truly foolish humanity can be, to create for itself this sort of world.

“There will always be people like that,” Gaara declares, emerging from the cocoon now free of the chakra chain that had him trapped. “It can’t be helped. What I have learned over the years is that this is the way of the world, but it need not be the way of people.”

“Gaara-san?” you hear Fū wonder, having also emerged from the now-disintegrating cocoon alongside Neji, who must have released the chains from their tenketsu.

“People can try to understand one another, and to acknowledge each other’s respective situations,” Gaara continues. “I can even understand the feelings of those who wish to kill me… it is the responsibility of a leader to eliminate threats to one’s village, so to an extent I even share his perspective.”

“But even “eliminating” a threat does not always mean killing them, or even necessarily resorting to violence at all.”

That actually sounds familiar… although, you realize, it means that you and Gaara will almost certainly find yourselves at crossed purposes at some point in the near future.

The sealing chains that you have counter-sealed with your Kongō Fūsa begin to strain, as though they have a will of their own that intends to turn on their creator. And so you simply allow that to happen.
>1/2
>>
>>4134299
“What!?” the monk demands as the chains reduce themselves into sealing ink, like snakes whipping to and fro before collapsing back onto the barrier. They constrict and break the shimmering walls and slam against the monk, essentially binding him completely.

“You tried to absorb the chakra you stole,” you guess. “Partial chakra from two jinchūriki… why did you think that would work, again?”

Gaara soon approaches. “That was you who stopped the technique. Thank you.”

“Sure,” you nod politely. “I guess Neji sealed the tenketsu those chains targeted?”

“That is my understanding of the situation,” Gaara tells you.

“Well done,” you congratulate Neji as he and Fū join you as well.

“So what will be done with that monk?” Neji asks.

“He will be tried, as any other criminal within our village,” Gaara responds.

“I would recommend Hozuki Castle, in Kusagakure,” you suggest. “I’m sure you’ve heard they’ve had a change in leadership there… the new warden is an acquaintance of mine. She’s a good person.”

“I will take that into consideration,” Gaara agrees. “Now then, to resolve this situation...”

It turns out that Gaara’s solution is to end the exams prematurely, since the involvement of the Kazekage and multiple jōnin largely invalidates the results of the second stage. It’s also going to be impossible for the Sand to host the third stage as intended, now that Gaara needs to deal with cleanup for the failed coup attempt. He announces the next morning to the assembled candidates that the third stage has been cancelled, and that recommendations will be sent to each village head regarding performance.

“Gaara is busy at the moment,” Temari tells you in a private room in the center tower, “but he wanted me to ask your thoughts on who should be promoted.”

“I can only offer criticism of the shinobi who I’ve observed in action,” you admit, “most of whom were kinda unremarkable.”

“By all means,” Temari agrees.

“Haruno Sakura showed analytical abilities and leadership during the first stage,” you admit, “though she’s also prone to acting on emotion. She’s technically qualified but has a lot of room for improvement.”

“Tenten is qualified as a chūnin based on her cooperation with Ajisai,” you continue, “which suggests to me that she has her priorities straight and can think quickly in difficult situations.”

“Hyūga Neji is easily qualified as a chūnin,” you tell her, “based on his analytical skills alone. Arguments could be made for promotion to tokujō based on his combat prowess, which I wasn’t privy to.”

“Fū has more than adequate power, and an amazing person, but is still too sheltered to make a good combat team leader.”

“Gaara seems to think highly of her as a person as well,” Temari agrees. “Though he didn’t seem to share your assessment of her potential as a chūnin.”

“A tokujō assignment may be warranted,” you observe, “but for different reasons than usual. She’s doubtless got the skills for it, just not the mindset, so that rank might be useful to keep her out of situations that her heart is just too pure for.”

“I’ll make a note of that,” Temari agrees. “Anyone you didn’t think too highly of?”

You nod curtly. “Akimichi Chōji.”

“Why?”

“If he were an Ame-nin he would be on probation for placing his whole team at risk over a sandwich,” you explain flatly, referring to the events at the Demon Desert checkpoint. “If his judgment did not improve he’d be dropped from the shinobi program altogether.”

“That’s rather harsh,” Temari observes with a frown. “Don’t you think?”

“Harsher than letting him get his teammates killed in the field?” you respond with a shrug. “Ultimately it’s in the hands of Asuma-sensei and Tsunade-han, but I feel he needs a wake-up call.”
>1/2, will continue after tonight’s social events
>>

As it happens, you get an update from Temari not long after you return home to Amegakure, and the news is actually more interesting than you’d anticipated. From Konohagakure comes the news that there has been an unusual measure taken: several candidates have been given the rank “tokubetsu chūnin”, which basically implies that they’re provisionally chūnin-ranked due to being otherwise ready but held back in some way.

Lee, Yamanaka Ino, Inazuka Kiba, and Hyūga Hinata have all been promoted to that rank, with the understanding that they’ll probably be made chūnin permanently when they establish themselves as a little more experienced and prepared to take on leadership roles. Sakura, Tenten, and the shady-looking guy on Team Kurenai who you had to be reminded is named Shino, were all promoted to full chūnin on a combination of your opinion, Gaara’s, and Shikamaru’s.

Passed over for promotion, but not placed on probation, was Akimichi Chōji. It seems Asuma was forced to admit that the indiscretion showed by his third student was absolutely consistent with his previous performances.

Your own two teams all passed though, with all six members being promoted to chūnin.

“Eat up!” you declare loudly at the table of an izakaya. “The whole tab’s on me this time, so don’t hold back!”

“Thanks,” Ajisai thanks you quietly as the rest of the newly-promoted chūnin throw themselves wholeheartedly into taking you up on your offer. “I take it after this you’ll return to your other duties?”

“Probably,” you admit, taking a sip out of your small cup of sake. “That’s just how things go.”

“It’s too bad,” she replies. “Normally I could look forward to working with you.”

“I’m sure we’ll have the occasion again,” you insist. “But maybe not for a while.”

“I wish it would end,” Ajisai sighs.

“It will,” you reply quietly, “some day. But it’s not worth doing if we can’t do it the right way.”

“After meeting Tenten, would you disagree?”

After a moment, she shakes her head. “No. And admitting that surprises me.”

“That just means you’ve grown,” you shrug. “It’s good that you can surprise yourself.”

“If you say so.”

After a moment, she makes an admission. “I told Tenshi-dono about your friend, Fū.”

I think you just answered your own question. That and I think they have a bunch of dead chunin they need to replace sooner rather than later.

On a side note:

Honestly, Sakura is only a disappointment because the author just never bothered to develop her character or her abilities to the potential she was implied to have. The beginning of Shipuuden is the first and last time she appears to make any relevant progress at all.

I must've accidentally deleted his line, but he's a tokubetsu jonin now. He didn't get the full promotion because neither his ninjutsu nor his genjutsu are quite developed enough for it.

His promotion in Part II is based on informed competence in fire release which he never showed in the exams that went back to explain how everyone got promoted.

Overall, I decided not to have Tsunade just give blanket promotions to all the Konoha 11 who participated. Because that was fucking stupid, since many of them didn't show the sort of maturity usually required of the rank until later in Part II.

“And how do you feel about that, having met her?” you ask.

Ajisai doesn’t look at you. “I don’t know.”

“Yeah no, I’m not buying that,” you press. “Come on.”

“I don’t know why you want her,” Ajisai corrects herself. “Akatsuki, I mean.”

“We don’t,” you admit. “There’s something sealed inside her we’re interested in.”

“I’ll see to Fū’s safety in all this.”

“That’s good,” Ajisai breathes a small sigh of relief.

“Hey, listen to me,” you insist, cupping the side of her head with your palm and forcing her to meet your eyes. “You worry about you, okay? Start worrying about stuff like Akatsuki business when you make jōnin, until then you can leave it to me.”

After a moment Ajisai shakes her head. “It bugs me that we’re not rivals anymore, you know.”

This time it’s your turn to frown and look the other way. “Yeah… I’ve gotten a little out of control lately, haven’t I?”

“I just wonder if I’ll be able to catch up at this point...” she mutters.

After a moment, you offer your reply. “Like I said… you just worry about you. I’ll help if you want me to, but if you’re too busy thinking about what I can do then you’re not thinking enough about what you can do.”

She sighs. “Yeah… I guess.”

“Look, next time we get a chance I’ll help you work out a training regimen,” you suggest. “I’ll try and convince Konan-sensei to give you some time off to train too. Sound good?”

She nods curtly. “So long as I don’t have to call you sensei.”

You give her a playful push and tell her that won’t be necessary.

Ajisai’s next mission comes up that same week, and so you say your goodbyes for now. Karin and Team Ibuki are likewise sent off on a border patrol mission, watching the border with Ishigakure for any signs that they intend to cross into Amegakure’s territory. You know they’re reeling from having been trounced by Iwagakure, so they may well be looking for an easier win against Ame or one of their other neighbors.

But soon, you’re faced with a more immediate concern: Kakuzu and Hidan have captured Fū.

You were somewhat less than pleased that these two in particular were sent after her and her jōnin escorts, but they were in the area already to follow up on Ajisai’s intel. So while you’re concerned that the Zombie duo would be too brutal with her, it’s also hard to make a logical argument why that should prevent Pain from seizing the opportunity presented to Akatsuki to grab its second tailed beast.

When you and Sasori meet with them outside the village of Amegakure itself, with their team having doubled back from where they intercepted Fū’s team in the Land of Grass, you’re reminded that you called this.

“She’s in even worse shape than Utakata was!” you protest after blacking Hidan’s eye with your fist.

“We subdued her, didn’t we?” Kakuzu counters gruffly. “We don’t complain about how you do your jobs.”

“Was torturing her a part of the job, then?” you shoot back.

“Hey!” Hidan shouts back. “Don’t you go dissing my religion, you filthy heathen!”

“Now now,” the holographic image of Pain interjects. “We will have plenty of time to air our grievances after the Seven Tails has been sealed. Get into your positions.”

You shoot Hidan a glare as he makes a face at you, but all four of you do as Pain instructs to begin the sealing ritual. Meanwhile, you unseal your Sharingan and prepare the Kongō Fūsa. You’ll only get one shot at this.

>Hidan tortured Fu

Well now we have to kill everyone in this room and then ourselves.
>>
>>4135900
Over the three days you make a long series of small interventions, making sure to regulate the flow of chakra out of Fū’s body with extreme care… you can also tell this way that she’s in pain, so you use a sound-based genjutsu and your specialized poison to heavily anaesthetize her through the experience. It makes you a little uneasy about what Utakata must have felt without your assistance. Her wounds also start to heal, albeit slowly, by the third day.

Eventually, it comes time to do the tricky part… you place a fūinjutsu over the one that had been holding her tailed beast within her chakra network, then let the original crumble under the strain of Pain’s technique. On the third day almost all the rest of the tailed beast is removed, and another “eye” on the statue Pain summons opens the same as it did for Utakata.

But you manage to seal a large amount of that tailed beast chakra back into Fū before setting your own fūinjutsu with a spiral-shaped marking.

Fū’s body falls back to the ground before you get the chance to stumble down to catch her, but when you check her condition she’s still breathing, slowly and regularly, and her heartbeat is still strong and even.

“Thank goodness...” you mutter wearily.

“It seems like it worked?” Hidan wonders aloud. “Man, Lord Jashin sure isn’t gonna like that… but I guess sometimes it can’t be helped. We mortals get this kinda trials sometimes.”

“Just keep her away from me if you want her to stay alive,” Kakuzu growls. “She may be an imbecile, but she’s still a Taki-nin. If she gets in my way again I might just have to kill her on general principle.”

“Now you’re talkin’ my language!” Hidan agrees as the two leave the abandoned building you’ve spent the last three days in.

“Don’t make it worse,” Kakuzu warns him.

“Okay, okay, just sayin’. Don’t get your tighties in a twist.”

“You should get some rest,” Sasori suggests. “You were the only one who did not take a rest besides Kisame.”

“I’m fine,” you insist, scooping Fū up off the ground. “I’ve got stuff to deal with.”

“Where am I?” Fū demands weakly when she awakens in a hospital bed three days later.

“In a hospital,” Karin replies. “You’re going to be fine...”

“… what is she doing here?”

“She hasn’t left your side in three days,” Karin explains quietly. “She only just fell asleep...”

“I’m not asleep,” you interrupt, your own eyes slowly opening. “Though I’ve taken a nap or two. Even I can’t go six days straight without any rest.”

“I’ll… leave you two to it then,” Karin replies uneasily. “I’ll just be outside.”

“You’re wearing that uniform,” Fū observes. “The same as the ones who attacked us.”

“We’re in the same organization,” you admit quietly.

“… why?”

“… it’s the responsibility of a leader to eliminate threats to one’s village,” you repeat Gaara’s words from before. “The tailed beast sealed inside you was a threat to everyone, so that’s why Akatsuki took it.”

“But I’m still alive!” Fū counters. “Nakkun, please explain what’s going on here!”

“I sealed part of the seven-tails back into you to save your life,” you clarify. “I’m sorry for what Kakuzu and Hidan did to you… I told our leader that would happen, but I got overruled.”

“Why did it need to happen at all?” Fū asks, staring at the ceiling. “Why did any of this...”

There’s a long, awkward pause.

“We can understand one another,” you agree with Gaara’s sentiments from the Demon Desert. “But that’s easier said than done.”

You turn your back to Fū and kneel in front of her bed. “There’s something I want to show you. I’ll carry you there.”

After a few moments of silence, you can feel Fū roll herself out of bed and cling to your back, and you use your arms to support her from under her legs. As you pass through the door you feel her lean wearily into your shoulder.

“Karin, please come with us,” you address your distant cousin. “And I’ll need an extra coat for Fū.”

“I’d argue,” she frowns. “But I know you have a reason for this, so I’ll spare you the lecture and just skip to the part where I agree anyway.”

“Thanks for understanding,” you reply calmly. “I promise it’s worth it.”

The village of Murasaki isn’t too far from the urban area of Amegakure itself, and as you leave the dense tangle of spires and pipes you notice Fū marveling at them from your back.

“So that’s Amegakure,” she muses sadly over the rain. “It looks miserable… no offense.”

“None taken,” you assure her.

“I’ve never seen so many people packed into such a tiny place,” she continues.

“That’s because of what I’m going to show you,” you insist.

When you approach the village you have to hop a high wire fence, not unlike the one surrounding the Forest of Death except that this fence sits atop a low concrete wall set into a ditch made with earth release.

“This wall marks a permanent barrier,” you tell both Fū and Karin, who have never been here. “It extends underground.”

“Why’s it here?” Karin asks you.

“You’ll see,” you insist. “Concentrate chakra in your feet… you’ll want to tread lightly within this barrier. Treat it like you’re walking on water or quicksand.”

After several more minutes of walking past the withered trunks of dead trees, you reach the remains of the village of Murasaki: dozens of modern concrete buildings done in a style that imitates the less durable, more easily decayed traditional styles of architecture in less perishable materials that were intended to shed the rain more easily.

“This was once a modern village, Murasaki-machi” you explain what the duo are looking at. “My mother lived here back when it was a ‘flower town’ full of restaurants, and hotels, and spas. It was also home to one of the most highly-regarded courtesan houses in the Land of Storms.”

“In the Third Shinobi World War it became a battleground between Sunagakure, Konohagakure, and Amegakure. Seven hundred shinobi or so died here in three days of combat where poison was used so heavily that their bodies were too contaminated to recover. Four hundred civilians were killed as well.”

“Their bodies were abandoned and sank into the muck, and the poison has persisted so strongly that the whole place will be uninhabitable for another few generations.”

“My mother was caught in one of the gas attacks here, and her lungs never fully healed. She died from those wounds when I was little.”

“I’m sorry,” Karin tells you quietly.

“It was a long time ago,” you admit, “and I had a chance to make my peace with her. But this was one battle in a much larger war, a battle that claimed eleven hundred lives. In this same war, the Fourth Hokage was said to have defeated a thousand shinobi on his own… and the Third Raikage was said to have fought an army of ten thousand shinobi for three days.”

“This is what war is like between shinobi,” you conclude. “Yes, I work with Akatsuki, but it’s to keep other places from ending up like this.”

“What does Chōmei have to do with that?” Fū asks you.

“The Tailed Beasts were distributed between the five great nations and Takigakure to be used as deterrence weapons,” you explain. “Which hasn’t worked at all… otherwise Murasaki-machi would still be a living town, and I’d probably be living here with my mother and father.”

“Akatsuki wants to become the one doing the deterring,” Karin realizes. “That’s the plan?”

You nod curtly. “The only way to stop it from happening again is to change the rules that allowed it to happen the first three times.”

>Feel free to disagree with me, either of you. I’m always open to suggestions.

“I’m not going to ask you to forgive me,” you tell Fū as you return to Amegakure proper with her. “Because whether you do or not is entirely up to you. But please, try to understand… I’m not doing this because I don’t care about you. I’m doing this for a reason that’s more important than either of us, and all I can do is try to do it the least-bad way possible.”

“Murasaki-machi is what I wanted you to see, hoping that it would give you an understanding of where I’m coming from.”

There’s a long silence.

“Man, I just don’t know!” Fū admits loudly, her usual pep slowly creeping back into her tone. “At least I know you’re not evil or anything.”

“Oh?” you muse. “And how do you know that?”

“If you’d just been tricking me the whole time why keep up the act?” she observes. “I totally knew you were a good person. It just sucks that friends ended up having to do this to each other this time.”

Friends, huh? Even after all this…

“I’m just sorry I’ve been a lousy friend,” you admit.

“Knock it off,” Fū tells you quietly. “You saved my life, right?”

“After putting it in danger first,” you counter.

“Was it though?” Fū reverses the counter. “How long ago did you figure out a solution?”

“… months?” you reply.

“There you go.”

“That was… easier than I’d imagined,” Karin admits.

You spend the day making arrangements for Fū.

She’ll have a room at the shrine for a while, so that she won’t just be able to go home to Takigakure and give away the fact that you and the Akatsuki are based out of Amegakure. You’re sure to drive that home, the fact that if it were known that Akatsuki had a major presence here all of your village would suffer. It’s likely that as your goals and work become more public the easy answer for the great villages would be to declare ware on Amegakure to get to you that way, which would be a total disaster in human terms.

You’re also sure to place a tracking seal on her back, as well as to arrange patrols and guards around the shrine so that Pain and Konan will be more confident in your ability to keep her here.

But you do show her around Amegakure, offering to let her go out on a few conditions: the first being that she go under guard, and the second being that she should store the Takigakure emblem she usually wears on her arm at the shrine when she goes out.

A few days later, she finally works up the nerve to answer the question: what is going to happen to Gaara?

>Same as her, except at that point you’ll no longer be hidden. So we’ll return him to Sunagakure.
>You’ll have to be more cautious, since he is after all a Kage. But there’s likely to be some time before then.

“Yeah… you were only brought here cause you were captured near the border already,” you explain. “So we probably won’t be taking Gaara out of the Land of Wind at all.”

“He’ll probably only be gone from Sunagakure for a week maximum, which is good.”

“Why’s that?” Fū nudges you insistently. “Don’t just leave out the actual explanations from your explanations!”

“Sunagakure and Konohagakure are in an alliance,” you tell her. “Capturing Shūkaku, without killing Gaara, means Iwagakure still won’t have enough of an opening to try attacking Sunagakure. Next would come one of the bijū kept by Iwa, then one kept in Kumo.”

“So you’re trying to keep it in balance,” Fū realizes, nodding along in understanding.

“All this would be pointless if we just ended up being the cause of the next war,” you observe.

“And I guess that’s why you’re keeping me here?” Fū guesses.

You nod, confirming it as you sit next to her on the veranda to listen to the rain. “Again, we really can’t afford to do anything self-defeating.”

“And Shūkaku and Chōmei, and all the rest?” Fū asks. “What about them?”

You pause to consider your answer to that for a moment, before reaching a conclusion that you suppose from your own perspective is inevitable. “Nothing really changes for them. They’ve been prisoners for what… fifty, sixty years? And before that several of them were known to attack people?”

Maybe I could try talking to Isobu, the Three-Tails, before sealing it,” you offer, “but much more than that isn’t a reasonable ask.”

Fū considers your points quietly for the rest of the evening.

It’s the next morning when Itachi finds you at the shrine.

“There is something I feel you need to see,” he insists quietly. “Come with me.”

Not to be deterred or denied, Itachi-han leads you to the base of Pain’s tower.

There are a pair of Amegakure genin there at an access doorway on the lower walkway level, carrying something by each end. They notice you and Pain and immediately make their respects, a difficult task without putting down their burden.

“Unzip it,” Itachi-han orders.

It’s hard to tell if you’re being choked, or if it’s just the anguished scream. Whether your ears have been covered, or if it’s just the rapid drumroll of your own pulse. Whether the rain has seeped under your cloak, or whether it’s your own cold sweat.

It takes two days to come to terms with the fact that Ajisai is gone.

At least when it was Ukemi you were there to see it, you knew what had happened. But Ajisai was killed somewhere far away and out of sight, so it still doesn’t feel quite real.

There was nothing you could have done differently. She was already dead when she was brought home. There’s no way for you to be with your friends every hour of every day, for every mission they’ll ever go on, but despite knowing that you still should have been there.

“… who did it?”

The words eventually escape your lips as Itachi-han sets a small plate of food in front of you… you vaguely recall him doing this before, and taking the plate away each time after you refused to even acknowledge its presence.

“It was supposed to be a simple mission,” Itachi-han informs you. “Pain wanted the Five-Tails jinchūriki, Han the Steam Ninja, observed.”

“They must have underestimated his sensory range. I’m sorry for your loss.”

“… I’m going to speak to her.”

Itachi-han stares at you in disbelief. “You’ve been catatonic for two days, so you may have forgotten… but she passed away.”

“As if that’s gonna stop me,” you assert, staggering to your feet. “Just shut up for a while and watch.”

You break into Ajisai’s apartment, which has always been a little sparse and is now missing the only thing in it of any importance, and switch on the light in her bathroom. Its not hard to collect hair samples, specifically looking for the roots, and transform the bulk of the hair so that it mimics the root. That should serve to amplify your sample of her remains, in case the sample you had to work with originally was too little.

“What are you...”

“I said shut up for a while,” you repeat yourself, taking the time required to go into Sage Mode before making the hand seals.

“Kuchiyose: Kijani!”

Kijani appears in Ajisai’s abandoned apartment, and you quickly add her biological samples to the scroll that has the key for your Tensa Jōdo Tensei technique written onto it.

“Kuchiyose: Tensa Jōdo Tensei!”

The familiar ash and dust generated as a part of this technique collect around the skeleton of natural energy, as your senjutsu chakra breathes life into the body it creates. The array that spreads across Ajisai’s floor serves to summon her from the afterlife, and the dust takes on her appearance.

When her eyes open, the sclerae are the familiar black color of a reanimation.

“What… this is...” Ajisai slowly comes to realize where she is. “I died… didn’t I?”

You nod slowly. “Yes… you did, Ajisai.”

“You’re not dead...” she realizes next. “Thank goodness… but then how...”

“A reanimation technique,” Itachi-han stares at you in legitimate shock. “When did you learn this?”

“Recently,” you reply tersely before turning back to Ajisai. “I need to know what happened to you, Ajisai. I can’t change it, but knowing will help me decide what to do next.”

“It was Han,” Ajisai explains. “We… we got careless. Took too long to abandon our hide and let him get too close.”

“It wasn’t even a fight. He slaughtered us… shuriken, senbon, exploding tags, summoned creatures. He didn’t even try to dodge… he didn’t have to.”

“Han, the Steam Ninja, is infamous for his nintaijutsu,” Itachi-han explains. “He uses the vapor release kekkei genkai to enhance speed and striking power.”

Ajisai nods in agreement. “It also enhances the battle armor he flows it through. We couldn’t even put a scratch on him.”

“It was like we were fighting a monster.”

“You shouldn’t have even been there,” you growl. “If I’d have known I’d at least have offered to go with you.”

“Tenshi-dono told us what the stakes were,” Ajisai admits. “We wanted to do this… we didn’t want to be babysat.”

You almost try to argue, but you realize that in the heat of the moment you might say something harsh that you don’t actually mean. So instead you remain silent.

“It was a mistake not to tell you,” Ajisai continues. “But it was all our own choices… so try not to blame yourself.”

You can’t help but embrace her. “Still… I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

Several minutes later, you take her to Kijani.

“You shouldn’t have died,” you insist quietly. “Not over something like this… so I’d like you to consider signing a contract.”

“A contract?” she repeats, before realizing what you’re showing her. “Uzumaki… Makoto? Is that someone you know?”

“My mother’s true name,” you explain. “She signed it in case I ever had need to summon her again, so that it’d be easier. And if I ever improve the technique, I might want to be able to contact her. That same logic applies to you.”

“Improvement?” Ajisai wonders, completely gobsmacked. “To improve on this?”

You shake your head. “Yeah no, it means ripping you from the actual afterlife and shoving you into an unfeeling vessel made of dust and natural energy. There’s a lot about this that’s not right, and there’s absolutely a reason the technique it was based on is forbidden.”

“Right...” she mutters. “I guess I haven’t processed it yet.”

“That the soul is a literal thing that actually exists?” you chuckle. “No kidding. But same as with my mother, I’m not going to keep you here artificially.”

Without any argument, Ajisai signs her name in kana on your scroll. Then Kijani disappears back to the forest.

“This is the hardest part,” you admit. “I’ll keep in touch, okay?”

“Thanks...” Ajisai sighs. “And can you do me a favor?”

“Of course.”

“See to it that my teammates get a proper service,” she tells you sadly. “They deserve at least that much.”

“… of course,” you repeat… honestly, it feels a little bad that you haven’t even considered Fuyō or Suiren in all this, but then again you only knew them through Ajisai. They were never your friends or teammates. But since Ajisai asked, you can’t possibly refuse because they were important to her.

It’s on that somber note that you let Ajisai return to the Pure Land.

When you turn to face Itachi, he’s still staring at you… and you find yourself feeling bizarrely exhausted.

“For a moment, I saw it,” he explains… and when you look more carefully at him you notice that his Sharingan have changed… instead of the three dots of a mature Sharingan like yours, or rather Izumi’s, you see a black pinwheel at the center.

You watch him cautiously. “What are you doing, Itachi-han?”

“This is called the Mangekyō Sharingan,” Itachi explains. “A rare ability awakened by those among my clan. While the Sharingan may be awakened with any powerful emotion… I awakened mine after seeing a teammate die, and Izumi awakened hers after her father sacrificed himself to save her and her mother… the Mangekyō can only be awakened by the trauma of watching a close friend die.”

“For me, it was my close friend Shisui. For you, it was your friend Ajisai… more specifically, it was probably the trauma of seeing her dead followed by the pain of having to let her go.”

You quickly come to a realization. “That’s why you insisted that I see Ajisai in person… you wanted me to awaken this… this thing.”

After a moment, he nods curtly. “Yes.”

Your punch meets his face faster than you even realize that you’re throwing it. Itachi-han staggers for a moment, but catches himself.

He looks back at you, a bruise slowly appearing on his cheek. “Are you finished?”

You pant slightly. “Yeah. Yeah, I am… but seriously, what the hell is wrong with you!?”

“There are several things,” Itachi-han admits. “The most significant of which is my health.”

“Explain.”

“When I awakened my Mangekyō, my health became… unstable,” he admits. “An underlying disease, likely autoimmune. Using my Mangekyō has probably shortened my life… no, the true question should be ‘by how much’.”

“Why are you telling me this?” you demand.

“Because you would find out eventually,” he explains.

“I don’t understand any of this,” you admit. “I can’t even tell if you’re the kindest man I’ve met in years or a total jackass. Right now I’m leaning towards jackass… but at the same time I can't deny that you gave me this eye. I can’t shake the feeling that you have some bigger plan here.”

“You aren’t incorrect,” Itachi-han admits.

“Then what the hell are you planning?” you demand. “Why are you manipulating me like this?”

“My reasons are my own,” Itachi insists sternly. “However, what I am doing now could be considered “future-proofing”, if you will.”

“You believe that your condition is terminal?” you press.

He nods curtly. “I understand my own body.”

“… fine,” you reply testily. “I’ll keep giving you the benefit of the doubt, then. That being said, there’s still one question you haven’t answered.”

“Why you?” he posits his guess.

“Why me,” you confirm.

Itachi-han takes a moment. “Akatsuki is, for the most part, a practical organization. Even if Konan shares similar sentiments to yours, if Pain insisted upon it she would not have designed a technique to save the life of a jinchūriki. Most among us would not have made such intricate considerations regarding the resurrection technique either.”

“So what, you’re putting this on me ‘because I’m a nice girl’, is that it?”

“Not simply ‘nice’,” he corrects you. “Fundamentally decent… I recall being told once that leadership is hardest on ‘good men’. I believe you will continue to face hardship long after my body finally fails… so you will need power.”

“When you left your little brother alive, did you have the same thing in mind?”

The words come out perhaps a little more accusatory than you intended… but then again, they are sort of an accusation just by their nature. It’s completely consistent with the same Itachi who made you see your friend’s corpse firsthand to try awakening Izumi’s Sharingan. But at the same time, your anger is tempered somewhat by the understanding that he’s not completely wrong: that in order to ‘use power wisely’ one has to first have power.

Itachi seems not to take offense. In fact, he considers his answer quietly for a moment.

“I considered that, of course,” Itachi-han admits.

Now he seems especially uncomfortable, and spends several long minutes silently grappling with whatever it is he’s considering telling you. Eventually, he seems to resolve his own doubts.

“But the real reason I spared him is because I love him. That’s all I can say on the subject.”

That throws a massive twist into your understanding of Itachi-han’s background, and of what happened to the Uchiha clan. It also confirms to you what you long suspected: that he had a specific, compelling reason to wipe out his clan, one which didn’t involve Sasuke. More than that, there must be some clear reason why he can’t even explain that to you explicitly… it’s probably still an ongoing issue, and you’d hazard a guess that someone in Konohagakure still knows the truth. In fact, it would be internally consistent to assume that Itachih-han is essentially blackmailing that person into leaving Sasuke alone.

“You’re still protecting him from someone,” you guess aloud. “Who?”

Itachi-han takes a long time to reply. “Shimura Danzō.”

There’s a familiar name.

“Has Konan ever told you the history of Akatsuki?”

Itachi-han shakes his head. “No… so why don’t you?”

“As I already told you, Akatsuki was initially formed around three war orphans from my village,” you explain, “all three of whom studied under Jiraiya-sensei as children during the Second Shinobi World War. Their initial message was one of peace and optimism, which converted others to their way of thinking including my own father. But they were betrayed.”

“Hanzō of the Salamander viewed the group as subversive and a threat to his own power, so he joined forces with a faction of Konohagakure’s ANBU: the one led by our mutual friend, Shimura Danzō. It was this union which destroyed the original Akatsuki and killed my father, leaving Pain and Konan-sensei as the only survivors.”

“That is where we surmised that ‘Tobi’, as he calls himself, began to influence Pain’s decisionmaking,” Itachi-han recalls. “He brought in S-ranked criminals who have been unified by their disillusion with the world to replace the original members, and to elevate the organization to an unrecognised world power.”

“You seem to give us a lot of credit,” you muse.

“I suspect Pain alone could bring Konoha to its knees in a direct confrontation, Jiraiya-sensei and Tsunade-dono notwithstanding,” Itachi-han replies thoughtfully, “though I also suspect he has reasons for not simply doing so, rooted in his own individual thoughts and circumstances.”

“With the full organization working together, no single hidden village would stand for long in this age of relative peace.”

“Thus, the Tailed Beasts.”

Itachi-han nods in agreement. “Indeed.”

“In any event it seems we’ve found another thing we share in common,” you conclude. “Danzō.”

This time, Itachi disagrees. “I believe what you said before about him was correct… that while twisted, he still acts on behalf of Konohagakure.”

“You say that like it excuses him,” you counter. “Or more specifically, like you’re making excuses for the same man you have to protect your little brother from.”

“So what is it? I know what he did to me and to my village, but what did he do to you?”

In an instant, Itachi-han’s eyes distort again into that pinwheel shape… the mangekyō.

And the next instant, the world around you is nothing but shadows cast under the blood-red light of a full moon. And in this instant, Itachi shows you a memory, or rather a series of memories carefully edited and strung together to form a horrific highlight reel of sorts.

A strange voice echoes through your mind…

I would like to use words before violence… the Third Hokage’s voice.

In order to protect Konohagakure, every possible step must be taken to avoid mayhem… a different voice, no less ragged from age, but very much distinct from the Third. Harsher, colder, merciless.

It begins in a forest, where a younger Itachi clad in the uniform of an ANBU operative asks an older man in a mask for his help in a task. The two come to an agreement: destroy the Uchiha clan, leaving Sasuke as the only survivor.

The sound of thunder.

There is no one else, Itachi…

Itachi spares only the slightest mercy for his first victim… a young girl, who recognizes him even with the mask. He places her under a genjutsu, the same genjutsu you realize you yourself are currently under, until she collapses from exhaustion. Strangely she dies thanking him… for showing her what you gather was a pleasant dream.

… will you accept this mission?

Itachi takes her eyes after she passes.

Tears… not all her own.

Many bodies fall from swift, almost supernaturally precise swings of a sword. There are no screams. Itachi leaves them no time.

I see… Sasuke, then.

A man who looks like an older version of Itachi with a square jaw and mangekyō of his own meets him in the streets with a shadow clone, inviting him into an aristocratic home. He assures Itachi that there are no traps.

Mother and father sit waiting in seiza, their backs turned to their eldest son.

I don’t want to have to fight my own son to the death…

Itachi hesitates, his resolve wavers. His mother assures him that they both understand why he has chosen the other side, his father reaffirms his pride in raising a son who can so firmly stick to his beliefs. A promise is exchanged, to take care of Sasuke, who is innocent in the affairs of the clan.

… you truly are a kind child…
>2/3
>>
>>4140361
The instant ends, and you find your eyes wet and your stomach churning from the experience. Itachi himself is seemingly feeling the effects of what he’s done, wiping away a single bloody tear before allowing his eyes to return to their usual slate gray.

“Through the Tsukuyomi I can manipulate the fundamental aspects of an entire illusionary world,” Itachi-han explains. “In this case, to show you my memories. Not just what I saw, but what I felt, when I was ordered to exterminate my clan.”

“The guilt I carry has lessened somewhat, of course, so imagine that it was worse at the time.”

“… a coup?” you pant. “That’s why you were ordered to do it?”

Itachi-han nods curtly. “The alternative would have been worse. Hundreds, if not thousands dead in Konoha itself, with war against the other great nations a likely result. My father would have made a fine Hokage, I believe, but his tenure would have been short-lived.”

“Of the two futures I could envision, neither had my clan in it.”

>>

I have to disagree. Itachi already escalated the emotional stakes by sharing not only the events themselves, but his own emotions during what was probably the most vulnerable and painful part of his life.

That's WAY more intimate than a hug. I feel like not showing any vulnerability in response is a little insulting.
If you don't want it to be a hug in particular, fine. But at least suggest an alternative rather than just anti-voting.

I honestly wouldn't suggest anything more than a reassuring hand on his shoulder, Itachi doesnt strike me as the kind of guy who enjoys physical contact, he only ever poked his brother in the head to show affection and when he finally was saying goodbye for the last time, touched foreheads with him. Just cause the dude showed us his trauma button doesn't mean we need to suck his dick, his story is sad, but it's one among the many Naori's already experienced/heard.

“Yeah, no… I don’t know whether to admire your resolve or pity you.”

“You don’t intend to ever tell Sasuke, do you?”

Itachi-han shakes his head. “As I told you before, I know that I won’t live a long and happy life. That’s outside my control. But I am still in control of how I use the time I have left… and by taking the blame for my clan, I can preserve the reputation of the Uchiha.”

“And continue to protect Sasuke,” you realize. “Are you actually loyal to Akatsuki or not?”

Itachi gives you a look like you’ve hit the nail on the head.

“Explain. You. Now.”

“Akatsuki’s goals aren’t my primary concern,” Itachi-han admits. “And Pain himself must have told you that the individuals which make up Akatsuki as it is today all have different motivations?”

“He did,” you confirm.

“I originally joined Akatsuki as a double-agent,” Itachi continues. “As you must by now have realized, this is no different from my role as a triple-agent within Konoha’s ANBU… serving the village while letting my clan believe I was a double-agent working for the Uchiha. But as was the case where my intentions were not to serve Danzō, or even Lord Third, my intentions now are neither to betray Akatsuki nor serve it.”

“If you were to ask me, particularly with one such as yourself serving as a moral center, Akatsuki’s actions are neither incorrect nor unjustified.”

“Then it’s this ‘Tobi’ you mentioned?” you guess. “Stealing the Tailed Beasts maintains an isometric relationship between the villages while discouraging open conflict overall, so in the long run Akatsuki isn’t even a ‘threat’ in the sense that an Uchiha coup would have been”

“That’s right,” Itachi agrees. “Between myself, ‘Tobi’, and Pain, it is difficult to say who the strongest is. That means my presence here and Tobi’s awareness of my loyalties keeps him in check.”

“And when you die, that check is removed,” you complete the thought. “That’s why you’ve done all this… stuck me with Izumi’s eye, worked to awaken her mangekyō, told me all of this and shared your pain with someone you barely know.”

“When I’m gone, Tobi will push Akatsuki even further in the direction of his own goals,” Itachi declares. “Whatever those might be. It will no longer be the Akatsuki that you, your father, or your sensei believed in. I believe it will become a threat not only to Konoha, not only to the other nations, but to itself.”

“When Konan-san told me about you, I wanted to know if I could rely on the strength of your bonds to help ensure such a thing never happens.”

“I’m asking you to make a decision based on principle,” Itachi insists. “I’m asking you to protect what’s most important regardless of how that looks from the outside.”

“I will,” you affirm, “however it would be best if you would sign a summoning contract… if your death truly is inevitable.”

“That’s right,” Itachi-han muses. “Your abilities do present both a problem and a solution. I have a counteroffer.”

“I’m listening.”

“When I do eventually die,” he explains, “my body will become a top-level asset to anyone who can claim it. I wish to ensure that someone like Tobi is not that ‘anyone’, much the same way as I protected Izumi’s eyes.”

“I’m still listening,” you nod along attentively.

“There is an aspect to the mangekyō that I must explain,” he continues, “and that is the fact that it has drawbacks to match its power. My mangekyō allow me two abilities: to manifest the inextinguishable black flames of Amaterasu with my right, and to cast the Tsukuyomi with my left. When both are together, it allows the bearer to manifest the Susano’o, essentially an avatar sculpted from chakra.”

“But overusing these abilities will cause an Uchiha to slowly go blind. My father and my friend Shisui both staved off that drawback, but with my constitution and my constant reliance on the mangekyō’s power since joining Akatsuki mean that my own eyes are in rough shape.”

“So what does that mean for me, in practical terms?” you press. “You wouldn’t have mentioned it without reason.”

“I will leave Izumi’s other eye with you,” Itachi-han tells you, “so that you will have a ‘backup’ in case something happens to the one you have. Be aware, it will not have the mangekyō… and even if you manage to awaken it a second time its ability may be different from the one you have now.”

“I understand,” you nod curtly.

“Now… the second point is that the mangekyō make it easier to set triggered or time-delayed techniques,” Itachi-han explains. “I would propose that you set one of your summoning seals inside my eyes, meant to trigger upon my death. It would act as a beacon for your scroll-bearing bird, who could reverse summon you to my body before it is taken by someone else.”

“The overuse of a mangekyō sharingan can be counteracted in just one way… the transfer of a second set of eyes that have awakened the mangekyō. This can only be done between close genetic matches, such as brothers.”

“I understand,” you agree, “though can I ask a few clarifying questions?”

Itachi-han gives his agreement by quietly nodding.

“Sasuke has joined Orochimaru,” you explain. “So I need to ask what you would want done with your eyes assuming Sasuke is… not how you remember him by the time you pass.”

“I leave it to your discretion,” Itachi-han replies. “But I will see to it that Orochimaru is not a problem… that should simplify your decisions.”

“Got it,” you nod curtly.

Itachi-han returns the next day with a small glass tube… inside that tube, preserved in some sort of medicinal fluid, is a single eyeball with a fully awakened sharingan.

“So this is her other eye...” you muse. “I appreciate how much trust you’re showing me by doing this.”

“There is one more thing I have to suggest...” he tells you before he lets go of the tube. “I cannot tell you what the mangekyō in your left eye might do… ordinarily it is instinctive to a ‘native user’, however you are not Izumi-kun. However, you now have a second piece of her in your hand...”

“You’re suggesting I use Tensa Jōdo Tensei to reincarnate her?” you realize.

Itachi-han eventually releases his grip, handing Izumi’s second eye over to you. “The remnants of the optic nerve will suffice… which means that it will cause some unintended complications if you try to replace your existing right eye with it. Though it will still serve as a replacement to your left, should anything happen to it.”

“And according to you, I would need to awaken this second eye separately anyway,” you recall. “Meaning emotional trauma like watching Ajisai die again.”

“Correct.”

I don't see awakening a second Mango Sharknado happening super easily, so the side effects of losing the optic nerve aren't really an issue. Similarly, losing the other eye is unlikely, and we wouldn't need to use the second Sharingan to have a replacement eye.

Understandably, Itachi-han states his preference to not speak with Izumi again years after killing her himself. So you make the preparations to summon yet another person from the dead, but for the first time not someone who you know.

There’s a slight sense of apprehension as you bring Uchiha Izumi into the world, scraping her together from dust and natural energy. When you first see her, you get a general impression almost immediately… a kind-looking face, youthful despite the obvious flaws that even your improved, senjutsu-empowered version of the reanimation technique can’t erase. Had she been allowed to grow into adulthood you’d imagine that she would be a beautiful young woman, with straight brown hair and pleasant features.

Her expression suddenly goes from vacant to panicked.

“What’s happening!?” she demands. “Where is this? Who are you? Are you attacking the Uchiha clan!?”

“It’s hard to explain,” you admit, holding your hands up. “But you died, Izumi. Seven years ago.”

Izumi’s eyes widen, and she falls to her knees. “No way… so that night...”

“… what about my clan?”

You shake your head quietly. “Only Itachi and Sasuke remain, so far as I am aware.”

“… I see...”

You kneel, gently drawing her head into your shoulder. “I’m sorry, but I need to talk to you about something.”

“Take your time.”

After a few minutes Izumi pulls away, and seems to forget that you’re the one in control of this situation.

“Who are you?”

You decide not to make an issue of it… because you can understand her feelings. “My name is Raishō Naori. I’m… well, I’m acquainted with Itachi-han.”

She watches you warily. “You know Itachi-kun?”

“He’s the one who entrusted me with your eyes,” you explain. “One is in my left orbit, the other I’m keeping hidden for now. I used its optic nerve to reincarnate you.”

“Reincarnate...” she repeats, examining the back of her hand. “That explains it. So I really am dead, then.”

“As for where we are, we’re in Amegakure,” you tell her. “My home village.”

“Itachi-kun fled to Amegakure?” Izumi presses.

“After wiping out the Uchiha he couldn’t stay in Konoha,” you explain. “I assume you knew about the coup?”

Izumi nods.

“That’s still a secret to the rest of the world,” you admit. “There are only a handful of people alive who know the truth… not even Sasuke is among them.”

“To preserve our image...” Izumi realizes. “He took the blame onto himself.”

You nod curtly. “As I said before, Itachi-han gave me your sharingan. So I wanted to thank you… as sentimental as it may seem, your eye has done way more than just replace the one I lost.”

Izumi takes a few moments to come to terms with what you were just saying to her, but she eventually seems to understand what you’re saying… not just that you’re “grateful”, but that you feel somewhat guilty over using the eyes of a dead girl who you didn’t even know.

“I… understand,” she eventually sighs. “Just please, don’t use them for anything stupidly evil? Not like I have much say in the matter anymore… but then again, it can’t possibly hurt to ask now.”

“No, it can’t, can it?” you muse. “Don’t worry too much about it. After all, Itachi-han wouldn’t have given me your eyes if he thought I’d use them for something you’d disapprove of.”

“Yeah,” she nods in agreement. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“Anyway… that wasn’t the only reason I summoned you,” you explain, indicating your eye. “I recently awakened your mangekyō… after my friend and rival from the academy died.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Izumi-han frowns sadly.

You nod, silently acknowledging her sentiment before continuing. “I was hoping that you might help me learn what your mangekyō does by...”

“I want to learn about you,” you explain. “I’ve wished I could thank you ever since I realized what it was Itachi-han actually gave me, but I can’t pass on this opportunity. And unless you’d rather play eyeball roulette with me for the next hour or two I think this is the best place to start.”

After taking a few moments to chuckle at the rather grim humor of “eyeball roulette”, Izumi agrees.

“Well, I awakened my sharingan when… well… when my dad died,” she explains slowly. “It’s weird, I never even really opened up to Itachi-han about this. Guess it always felt too embarrassing to admit that I really just wanted to protect people, like my dad protected me and my mom from the Nine-Tails… like it was just the doofy dream of a little kid.”

“Did you believe in that dream?” you ask.

She nods. “Of course.”

“Then there was nothing wrong with it,” you shrug. “Anyway...”

“Right,” she agrees, before continuing with her story. “Although I awakened the sharingan at a really young age, just five years old where Itachi was eight, I could barely use it without exhausting myself.”

“But I never stopped working towards improving myself, even though I struggled to use the sort of elemental ninjutsu Itachi mastered easily. I learned four of the five basic elements… but could only really use fire in battle. I’d been improving my taijutsu, learning to apply fire chakra flow to shuriken… when I died.”

“Itachi-han told me a little about that,” you admit.

“It came as such a surprise,” Izumi admits sadly. “I had heard about the coup of course, but never imagined it would go so far… I guess I was the only one still tricking myself that far along, but I still believed in the Uchiha clan.”

You consider her words very carefully. “Would you mind using your sharingan for me?”

“Why?” she asks. “Like I said, I’m terrible with them… I barely managed to master them before I died.”

“I’ve seen to your chakra,” you reply calmly. “So don’t worry about that.”

Izumi makes a hand seal, and her eyes change to the mature three-tomoe sharingan pattern. She immediately seems surprised. “Wow, you’re right… I can tell there’s something different.”

With some difficulty, and tweaking of the seal restricting chakra flow into your left eye, you unseal your own mangekyō.
>1/2
>>
>>4144311
“This is a lot harder to maintain than I thought,” you admit… it’s not all that hard, really, but it’s particularly surprising since you’d assumed Sage Mode would make it effortless. “But I think I’ll get used to it.”

Izumi however seems a little confused. “Hey, wait… how is it you deactivated it? I thought that wasn’t supposed to be possible.”

“It normally isn’t,” you explain. “I use a fūinjutsu on the optic nerve to manually control chakra flow.”

“And that actually works?”

“Apparently?” you shrug. “Anyway, let’s start with some sparring. No need to hold back.”

She stares at you for a moment. “Are you sure?”

You not curtly. “Trust me, I’m a lot stronger than I look.”

“Okay then,” Izumi agrees hesitantly. “If you insist.”

It doesn’t take long for Izumi to realize that you weren’t kidding. Every move, including her use of Hōsenka, fire nature chakra flow onto two handfuls of shuriken she had unsealed, is met with perfectly-timed parries with a pair of kunai through which you’ve flowed water nature chakra.

Each of your movements is unusually smooth and flowing, having gone from possessing a practiced and efficient grace to something that borders on the supernatural.

But when Izumi starts weaving seals for a different technique, your response surprises even yourself.

You breathe onto one of your kunai, enveloping it in glowing wisps of yellow chakra even as Izumi comes at you with a pair of kunai that crackle with lightning.

Again, you clash inconclusively… though had you been going all-out in your senjutsu-enhanced form you probably would have cut Izumi clean in half, for all that would amount to.

“I know that move!” Izumi-han declares excitedly. “That was Shinkūjin, a form of wind chakra flow! I studied it, but I could never get it to even come close to working!”

You consider it carefully. “Chakra flow… normally I can’t use any natures other than water and lightning, my affinities. And the way I move… my control over my own momentum and shifting center of balance is improved.”

“That must be it!” Izumi-han declares again. “I know it is… Benzaitennyo!”
>2/3
>>
>>4144383
“Benzaitennyo?” you repeat. “You mean one of the ‘Seven Lucky Gods’? I didn’t realize the Uchiha went in for those sorts of traditions.”

Izumi nods insistently. “Yeah, we had our own protector deity and everything. Anyway, Banzaiten was supposed to be the goddess of things that flow… like chakra, or the qualities of the néjiā… the ‘internal’ martial arts.”

“Isn’t she considered ‘lucky’ because luck is thought to ‘ebb and flow’, or something similar?” you ask, further testing her theories.

“Combined with the perceptive and hypnotic abilities of a sharingan, enhanced into the mangekyō...” Izumi considers her response. “I mean, ‘the soul’ apparently exists if you can summon it, so maybe ‘luck’ does too. Or else, with the sharingan the effects might make it seem so.”

>Benzaitennyo: Uchiha Izumi’s left mangekyō sharingan allows eased control over chakra flow techniques for 1 ES, including the three base natures Naori would otherwise lack. This ability lasts until Naori’s ES cooldown reaches 0 turns.
>It can also be used to tweak the flow of time in Naori’s favor, allowing her to take ES to “buffer” the use of SP to meet a missed target DC. Exact costs will need to be determined on each occasion.

You seal Izumi’s sharingan to save yourself the stress.

“Yeah, no… I’m going to have to train with that too,” you admit. “If I weren’t in sage mode I don’t know how bad the backlash would be.”

“Sage mode?” Izumi asks curiously.

“I used natural energy to bring you here,” you explain. “Normally it’d require a human sacrifice… but that’s not really my style.”

“I think I understand why Itachi-kun would trust you with my eyes,” Izumi sighs wearily. “Speaking of which… where is he?”

>He’s not here at the moment. Would you like me to take him a message?

So, to clarify:
Benzaitennyo allows for Naori to gain an elemental advantage on an opponent, which can be maintained indefinitely at the cost of taking 1 ES immediately as your cooldown would ordniarly reach 0. That means you only have 1 ES to play with while you're using that ability.

The second ability tweaks the flow of time. This lets you take ES instead of spending SP at a 1:1 exchange, including any permutation of the two including spending 6SP and taking 2ES to meet a DC you missed by 8. Or, if you missed by 2, you can take 2ES to pass without spending any SP.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but this seems pretty underwhelming for being a mangekyo ability.

>It can also be used to tweak the flow of time in Naori’s favor, allowing her to take ES to “buffer” the use of SP to meet a missed target DC. Exact costs will need to be determined on each occasion.

Alright, I didn't refresh before posting, my bad.

>Benzaitennyo allows for Naori to gain an elemental advantage on an opponent

"elemental advantage" is a boost in nature transformation, similar to what naruto does (and we could do) with shadow clones for the rasenshuriken?

"on an opponent" is it enemy dependant? is it a bigger boost againt madara than a random genin? would it even do anything against a genin considering we already have an 'elemental advantage'?

Could we achieve the same level of proficiency by rolling well on a training roll?

do we need to know how to theoretically perform techniques that we normally couldn't do to use them with this elemental boost?

it seems way worse than ms abilities like amaterasu or tsukuyomi (even including the 1:1 ES to SP conversion, which doesn't seem to be worth much?).

did we get the support eye? like if we had gotten Enton from Sasuke instead of amaterasu?

I'm probably being stupid but I really don't get it.
>>
>>4144601
elemental advantage means that if someone uses a chakra type against her she can now use the type that is strong against that to counter it, even if she under normal circumstances couldn't use that type, with this ability she can use the flow version.

its against an opponent and the ability lets her bend the flow of time to for example react faster to an attack, which is represented in the mechanic.
>>
>>4144609
So the first one is something we can use if we run up against some assholes earth based invulnerable flesh jutsu and it just lets us gain wind attacks against him for the whole fight and the second one is a +1 to a skill check.
>>
>>4144614
>second one is a +1 to a skill check

>>
>>4144554
>>4144601
Under normal circumstances Naori can't use three of the five elements even with base Sharingan and Sage Mode. Training was never something that would "solve" that for her. Benzaitennyo allowing her access to those three is a huge versatility buff on its own, and specifically limiting them to chakra flow isn't exactly bad either as those techniques are fairly solid, equivalent to years or even decades of training FOR FREE.

As for the time-controlling ability, just extending your SP reach by 1/3rd makes a big mechanical difference, and giving you potentially 25% of that range FREE REGEN is potent. Taking ES on a near miss can also extend your SP pool significantly in practice.

And, again, Izumi's Mangekyo ability WARPS TIME. Sleeping on that is like saying "oh, Flying Thunder God is just a teleportation technique".
>>

“He… didn’t want to be here,” you admit hesitantly. “I think he feels guilty about what he did to you in particular.”

“Well, can you tell him something for me?” Izumi asks you.

You nod politely and gesture for her to continue.

“Please just tell me… that I understand why he did it,” she tells you. “And that I’ll be watching over him from the other side… and not to join us too soon.”

“And, if it’s not too much trouble… could you look after him for me? Sasuke-kun too?”

After a moment, you shake your head. “As much as they’ll let me, yes.”

“Sorry to put that on you,” Izumi-han apologizes cheerfully. “But… I get the feeling that I can trust you with my feelings. So… thank you, Naori-san.”

“It was nice to meet you, Izumi-han,” you bow politely. “Please rest easily.”

Izumi-han’s soul leaves the crude shell you created for her, before disappearing. The now-empty body crumbles back into dust, which drifts out into the rain where it seeps back into the soil.

“I’m glad you’re doing better,” Fū tells you when you finally settle back into your quarters at the shrine. “I was really worried about you, Nakkun.”

“Thanks for worrying about me,” you reply, your voice tired. “And I’m sorry for worrying you. But losing Ajisai was hard. Much harder than I thought… and the repercussions took some time to sort through.”

“Are you gonna be okay?”

“Of course,” you insist. “I’ll be fine, it’ll just take a while.”

The request you and Sasori are handed comes not from a minor nation, but from the survivors of one: specifically, the kingdom of Rōran which presently lies in ruins within the deserts of the Land of Wind.

“The kingdom of Rōran was destroyed when I was about your age,” Sasori explains while en route, “in the opening phases of the Third Shinobi World War. They did nothing wrong, of course, aside from slighting both the daimyō of Wind and Fire by seeking to remain neutral.”

“So they had it destroyed?” you ask, appalled at what you’re hearing.

Sasori immediately corrects you. “Kirigakure wished to create footholds for itself on the mainland. Since Rōran was close to the sea at the Land of Wind’s southern border that was a logical conquest for them. They did this in similarly vulnerable places to deal with the Land of Fire and the Land of Lightning as well.”

“That’s just as bad,” you insist.

“And the ‘great’ Nations cared little for these smaller states… as your homeland of Amegakure learned.”

After three days in the shifting sands of the desert you finally catch your first glimpse of the ruins of Rōran, and the comparison to Amegakure proves apt. They once built themselves up onto a very small footprint, with towers that soar out of the desert. Now the towers are crooked, crumbling away under the weight of years of neglect.

“So that’s Rōran...” you muse.

“The mission profile included a meeting point,” Sasori reminds you. “We should head there now.”

“Yeah, yeah,” you grouse, “not to keep anyone waiting.”

The meeting point is just outside the city, near what appears to have once been a barrier designed to reduce the amount of sand blowing through Rōran back when it was inhabited. Now that sand seems to be the only thing that ever enters the ruins.

“Hey, over here!”

The voice of a girl, somewhere in the range of your age and that of Naruto’s cohort, calls you over to a more sheltered spot out of the wind.

She has red hair, a shade or two lighter than your own, with two whorled bangs of sorts that meet at the back of her head. Her clothing is simple, but she carries herself with a special… not quite the grace of a trained swordmaster, but more a sort of regal bearing.

“Welcome,” she greets you politely, before handing you a canteen with water in it. “My name is Sēryū, and thank you for accepting our request… we hardly have the money to pay Sunagakure to come all the way out here for a mission that we can’t even be sure will...”

She notices that you didn’t hand the canteen to Sasori.

“… amount to anything.”

“You would be the princess of Rōran?” you hazard a guess.

Despite her surprise, she nods. “Yes, though I know I may not look it...”

“Trust me,” you assure her. “Those of us who know what to look for can tell. And honestly? The humility is a nice change of pace from the daimyō.”

“Well, I wouldn’t know about that,” she smiles kindly. “But my mother always taught me that living among our people was what would show us how to lead them, that the further we let ourselves get from them means the more we lose touch with what’s important.”

“Your mother sounds like she was a wise woman,” you smile. “Now please… tell us more about what has you spooked.”

“Well, this nation once lay on one of the Ryūmyaku… a powerful leyline,” Sēryū explains. “I inherited some of my mother’s ability to sense the chakra that flows through the Ryūmyaku… though I can only do it with the help of this.”

“It’s a Konoha chakra blade,” you realize, though it’s been badly tarnished with age. “Now that’s interesting… Sasori, did Konoha ever send shinobi here on a mission?”

Sasori grumbles his response, eyeing the blade all the while. “To my knowledge… no.”

“My mother said it was given to her in a dream,” Sēryū explains. “I asked around years ago and nobody could give a more plausible explanation for it.”

“Its poor state of polish is probably making it harder for you to use,” you guess. “When we’re done here I’ll give you the name of a sword-polisher in the Land of Iron who’s been known to charge less or even waive the cost for a blade with an interesting story to it.”

“Thank you, that’s very thoughtful,” Sēryū inclines her head, just enough to be polite. “As for your mission, because I can sense the leyline I get worried sometimes… natural fluctuations. So I come here to make sure everything is alright. But this last time it seemed like someone had been here.”

“So that’s why we’re here?” Sasori presses.

Sēryū nods. “Please. It’s our duty to ensure that the Ryūmyaku is never used for evil purposes, but our strength has dwindled over the decades… and we may not be able to count on Sunagakure to come to our assistance, since they were weakened by the war with Konoha.”

“I understand,” you bow politely. “If you wouldn’t mind leading us into the ruins, we’ll escort you in case anything goes awry.”

“Thank you both.”

“I have to admit,” she tells you as she leads you deeper into the ruins of the city, “I’m surprised that Akatsuki is so pleasant to work with. Mercenaries have a bit of a reputation… perhaps unfairly so?”

“For the most part the reputation is well-warranted,” Sasori admits as he shuffles along behind you and Sēryū. “It was your luck that many of our number aren’t suited to missions like this.”

“Oh, I see,” Sēryū replies. “In any event, this is where we need to be. Please follow me.”

The princess leads you underground, into a series of tunnels… one of which leads to an open vertical shaft as wide as an entire building, with dim natural light filtering in through broken windows and gaps in the streets above. Here you see a single span that leads out to a round stone pillar.

“All this… was designed to access the Ryūmyaku?” you realize. “Impressive… but if Rōran had this ability, then how were they invaded and destroyed?”

“Come out here and I’ll show you!”
>1/2

“It’s a fūinjutsu,” you recognize, having been led out to the top of the pillar. There’s something like a slitted eye in the center of the platform, with an eight-pointed sealing formula scrawled across the polished stone surface. In the center of that eye is the hilt of a strangely-shaped kunai, with a wooden handle. On that handle there’s another sealing marking… one which bears a shocking resemblance to your own style.

“The Ryūmyaku was sealed deliberately,” Sēryū explains, “back during my mother’s rule. It was what made Rōran into what it was, but it also presented a grave threat. Even if it didn’t destroy everything we built, my mother saw that it threatened everything our people were. And so she put things back the way they were before my grandmother had been convinced to use the Ryūmyaku to make our city great in the first place.”

“It was because my mother abandoned the city itself that the city of Rōran was destroyed, but it’s also because of that that our people were saved.”

Upon closer inspection of the seal, you’re forced to ask an awkward question. “Princess Sēryū… did you inherit your hair color from your mother?”

She nods. “Yes, I did… why?”

“Do you know if your family has any connection to the Uzumaki clan?”

“The… “Uzumaki”?” she repeats hesitantly. “No, I don’t know much about shinobi clans, and I know my mother never mentioned that one in particular.”

“Is it important?”

You nod curtly. “Whoever placed this seal was immensely skilled, and used a fūinjutsu style almost exactly like mine. It’s almost spooky… and you say this has been in place for more than twenty years?”

Sēryū nods to confirm it. “Yes, that’s right.”

“I’d like to take a closer look,” you tell her. “I can’t tell at a glance if it’s been tampered with.”

“Go ahead,” Sēryū insists. “If you need to, then by all means.”

You carefully examine the sealing markings… of them all, only the ones on the hilt of the kunai at the center are clearly legible: four characters, read “nin-ai-kore-ken” or “endurance-love-this-sword”. It’s clearly been “compressed” in the same way all of your formulae are, and given that the number of characters is twice as many as the number any of your own seals use it’s most likely an incredibly complicated technique. It probably serves as the basis for the rest of the technique, which you continue by examining in depth.

Many of the characters are illegible, and it’s clear that the user didn’t bother to compress them to nearly the same degree as on the kunai. So while you’re unable to read it exactly you confirm that it’s an Uzumaki-style sealing array meant to restrain a massive flow of chakra indefinitely. There are also many inclusions that are there simply to make it harder to discern anything about the sealing formula key, such that it would take years to figure out which aspects are obfuscated and which are genuine, then what the function and design behind each of the genuine parts might actually be, then how those interface with the kunai.

“I wish I know what this thing did,” you sigh after about a half hour of careful examination.

“Hm?” the princess muses, having spent the last half hour dangling her feet idly off the edge of the pillar. “What was that?”

You tap the ring of the kunai with your fingertip. “This kunai has an amazingly complex fūinjutsu marked on it that serves as the basis for the entire rest of the array, which was added later. You can tell based on the fact that the user compressed all of the sealing formula into just four characters, which looks simpler but actually indicates an insanely intricate key, but didn’t do the same out here.”

“So… that means the important part is the kunai?” Sēryū tries to summarize what you just told her.

“That’s exactly right,” you nod. “And I can’t remove it without the risk of accidentally undoing all this work… in fact, with how extensive the fūinjutsu around it is… I’m pretty sure I can’t physically remove it at all.”

“Hey Sasori-han!” you call out. “Come check out this piece of work! It’s totally amazing!”

With a grumble, Sasori shuffles across the relatively narrow bridge to join you. “This had better be good...”

He stops when he sees the kunai. “That’s a Hiraishin marking, left by the Fourth Hokage.”

“Hiraishin...” you repeat. “Is that the technique that made the Fourth Hokage famous in the war?”

“Exactly.”

>Well, it’s doing a fine job. I don’t see any evidence that it COULD be tampered with, let alone that it HAS.

“It’s doing an amazing job,” you admit. “I see no evidence of tampering… and for normal people it might not be possible to tamper with. That said… I really want to study it carefully. The Fourth Hokage seems to have been even better with my clan’s fūinjutsu than I was. It’d also help if I do need to come back and fix it at some point later.”

“You mean you’re willing to come back if we need you to?” Princess Sēryū asks excitedly.

You nod. “Sure. I don’t like leaving things half-done.”

“Now, if you wouldn’t mind taking a few steps back...”

Once you’re sure Sēryū can’t see what you’re doing, you unseal your sharingan to study the seal more carefully. No need to draw her into affairs that don’t concern her, like how you got hold of that eye in the first place, she seems like a really kind person. And enough kind people have been drawn into Akatsuki’s business as it is.

“Where is this?” you demand of no one in particular, raising your left hand to form the seal of confrontation as your right hand reaches for Umekiri’s hilt.

Your surroundings are different… almost like a darkened room lit by candle light but without the candles themselves. The walls are a dark red, almost like a lacquer, with an immense amount of sealing script flowing across the surfaces in long strands.

“Am I inside the seal...” you wonder aloud. “It must involve some sort of space-time manipulation. It’s incredible, but how do I...”

You swiftly realize that you’re not alone.

“Who are you?” you demand of the handsome blonde-haired stranger, dressed in a muted earth-toned flak jacket. “How did I get drawn into the seal?”

“I might ask you the same questions,” the man replies calmly.

“... not a genjutsu,” you realize. “You’re physically present here, so… chakra? Did the Fourth Hokage leave some kind of imprint, or a shadow clone sealed in here as a defense mechanism?”

The blonde man stares at you in something approaching amusement. “Well, some of that was right. My name is Namikaze Minato, and yes, I’m the one who created this seal. Though I’m not the Fourth Hokage.”

“Yeah, no,” you realize, “you wouldn’t know about that, would you? You created this seal before that happened.”

“So the seal held for at least a little while,” the ‘chakra ghost’ calling himself Minato muses. “That’s good news at least. But I have no earthly idea who you might be… an Uzumaki clearly, with a single sharingan like Kakashi’s, and no village insignia. I’ve never seen the pattern on your cloak, either.”

“I came here at the request of the princess,” you explain, mindful of the many strings of fūinjutsu formulae moving around within this tightly-confined space… if he wanted to, this phantom could trap you here using them, as you’ve divined that to be their purpose. “She was concerned someone might have tampered with the seal you placed on the Ryūmyaku, and I couldn’t know for sure whether that’d happened without discerning more about how your seal was designed.”

“I see, so it sounds as though this was a false alarm,” Minato sighs. “Well, that’s too bad. But I’m still curious. It’s rare to see the sharingan outside the clan… even Kakashi had to receive special permission to keep his.”

“How many years has it been since I placed this seal?”

“About twenty,” you explain.

“So… did Kushina end up marrying an Uchiha?”

“Minato” seems slightly dejected.

>My mother’s given name was Makoto, not Kushina. That’s all I can tell you.

“My mother’s given name was Makoto,” you explain. “That’s all I can tell you, sorry.”

“Interesting,” he replies. “So you’re not from Konoha at all.”

“If you had been stuck in amber for twenty years, wouldn’t you be curious?”

“Admittedly,” you shrug. “Not like what we say is going to leave this place.”

“Admittedly,” he agrees.

“So where does that leave us then?” you press him. “No offense, but I’d like to leave this place. I have other things I need to do.”

“On one condition,” Minato tells you. “I’ll show you how to seal something not unlike a shadow clone into a fūinjutsu, to be triggered conditionally later, and I’ll also show you the key to leaving this place, so long as you agree to leave a copy of yourself here in my place… even this brief conversation is draining what little presence I had.”

“Sealing a shadow clone into this seal...” you muse.

“Don’t worry about it,” Minato insists. “If you’ve ever used the shadow clone technique, then you’ve probably figured out that over time your chakra will replenish as normal.”

“I’ve used ration pills to speed that up in the past,” you agree. “So that’s not news to me.”

“Good, then that alleviates any trust issues,” Minato nods politely. “So, can I count on you to help Rōran in my place?”

>Of course. I was actually kind of hoping to learn something about your sealing technique, and this is a great excuse for it.

I'm afraid I introduced a small contiuity error here: Minato's mission to Roran took place prior to the Third Shinobi World War. So the following lines should be retconned:
>>4145960
>"But I have no earthly idea who you might be… an Uzumaki clearly, with a single sharingan, and no village insignia."
>>4145974
>"It’s rare to see the sharingan outside the clan… in fact I can't think of a single example."

Basically, take out any mention of Kakashi and problem solved.
>>
>>4146193
“I was actually looking forward to learning something from you,” you admit. “And I was willing to help out the survivors of Rōran anyway. So it’s a win-win for me.”

Minato smiles kindly. “That’s good to hear.”

With one hand he gestures for a few strings of characters to leave the floor, forming in front of you almost as though treating the air itself as a canvas.

“This is the key you’ll need to get out,” he explains, giving you time to copy the characters onto a spare scroll of your own. “Now I’ll show you the formula required to seal a shadow clone into a fūinjutsu formula, instead of forming it into a physical body.”

The characters dissipate into the air, and a new series of lines rises up from the floor in the same way.

You study these carefully.

“I see...” you realize after a careful examination. “So the principle is the same as forming a shadow clone, but without the hand seals to shape it into a body. Instead the sealing key stands in but only in the case that the contingency is triggered… it’s amazingly complex in execution but so simple in theory.”

“As many supposedly ‘difficult’ techniques are,” Minato agrees. “You know, I hope my students are like you by the time you’re living in. I see a little of each in you… one born with ample potential, one with remarkable skills, and one with the kindness in her heart that every shinobi should have.”

“You must have made your own sensei very proud, and it was a pleasure to meet you… however brief it was.”

“Likewise,” you bow politely. “If you’ll excuse me.”

“Sure.”

“I see you’re awake,” Sasori muses.

You sit straight upright, startling Sēryū so badly with the abrupt movement that you feel obligated to apologize.

“How long was it?” you ask. “And… Sasori-han. Tell me… my eye...”

He nods slowly, the mechanical tail-blade of his Hiruko armor moving slowly in preparation for a strike.

You shake your head.

“It was only a minute or so,” Sēryū informs you. “Your eye looked strange when you froze up… what was that?”

“A technique I need you to keep quiet about,” you insist sternly. “It… isn’t my eye. I didn’t get it by doing anything wrong, it was given to me. But that being said, it’d be a real problem if anyone but the three of us knew.”

“Can you do that for me, Princess Sēryū?”

She nods immediately in agreement. “Of course. You are the one who came out here to help us, and promised to come back the next time I need help with this.”

“Thanks,” you bow politely, before rising to your feet and dusting yourself off. “I ran into a trap left by the Fourth Hokage… he left a shadow clone worth of chakra sealed in there as a defense mechanism. Since I set off his trap by mistake, he taught me to seal a clone of my own in his place. So the fūinjutsu he placed here has been fully restored.”

“I also placed a seal that will alert me if it’s damaged, and I’ll give you this as well.”

You place an intricate seal onto a tag, using another shadow clone and a seal derived from your Kuchiyose marking. “If you ever need immediate help just tear this tag in half. It’ll release a shadow clone of me to help you, and when it’s dispelled I’ll know everything that it did.”

Princess Sēryū seems stunned, barely understanding the technical aspects but understanding well enough that you’re going way out of your way for her.

“… why?”

Eventually, Sēryū nods in agreement. “I understand. On behalf of my people, thank you.”

“Of course,” you insist. “By all means, keep in touch.”

“You handled that well,” Sasori admits.

“Easy to manipulate.”

You shake your head. “Just trusting.”

“Same thing.”

“Man, you’re a real piece of work...”

February 20th… the day you turn seventeen.

Karin, the Ibuki twins, and Fū all throw a small celebration for you after you get back from another mission for Akatsuki… the tone is muted, since it’s been less than a month since Ajisai was killed and you still don’t feel much like celebrating.

“The priest said for me to bring this to you,” Fū declares, holding out a package. “Said it was left here for you while you were gone?”

A gift?

“I have no idea who it could be from,” you admit, removing the wrapping paper and opening the box.

Inside is…

“I know what this is!” you suddenly realize.

“Oh?” Harusame muses. “Enlighten us.”

“It’s a blank,” you explain. “A long time ago weapons weren’t forged out of iron or steel, but cast from bronze. The process duplicated the shape of a sword modeled on a blank like this one, made from soft, easily-carved stone.”

“Bronze?” Karin asks. “Isn’t that pretty soft?”

“Compared to steel, certainly,” you agree. “But it’s also easy to mass-produce to a set specification.”

“So… it’s an antique?” Karin asks.

“That’s a massive understatement,” you reply. “It’s more accurate to call it an artefact.”

“Why would someone give you something like that?” Fū wonders aloud.

You consider her question for a moment. “Whoever owned this had control over who got the swords produced from it. And because of that, they probably had control over how they were used.”

“It’s a pretty good metaphor for Akatsuki.”

“It was someone from Akatsuki?” Karin presses. “Who?”

“Probably Itachi-han, if I had to guess.”

It makes a certain amount of sense, coming from him… since he strikes you as the type to give a gift with a meaning rather than one with a purpose or which the receiver would want. It also occurs to you that you don’t know enough about him to know when his birthday is… same with any of the others in Akatsuki.

It’s honestly a strange feeling.

That night you place the jade blank in an alcove in the shrine, before falling asleep to the sound of the falling rain outside.

And so that’s how you ended up in the Land of Water, dodging shinobi and guards sent by the daimyō to watch over the many separate islands that comprise his nation.

“Boy, you sure picked a pain in the butt,” you grumble. “Too bad too… this place would be amazing otherwise.”

The islands of the Land of Water tend to be dominated by limestone karst formations, dramatic bone-white spires rising from the seas and covered in jungle, shrouded and mysterious beneath a blanket of mist. It seems fair to say that this is a land which reveals its beauty only reluctantly.

“It certainly has a charm,” Sasori agrees, having shed for now his Hiruko armor to maneuver somewhat more easily. “Now then, let’s review the details.”

“Can we at least get inside first?” you ask.

“I thought you were used to rain,” Sasori observes.

“Not for eight hours at a time,” you counter, “and not when we could just rent or steal a room for the night.”

“… a fair point.”

After putting the guy at the counter of a nearby inn to sleep with genjutsu and stealing a set of keys, you resume the discussion indoors.

“The noble should be in his fortified manor,” Sasori reminds you as though nothing had happened. “He should only be guarded by a small contingent of privately-hired shinobi bodyguards. How we proceed in dealing with them is of secondary concern.”

“It’s over a bunch of illicit activity, right?” you ask for confirmation.

Sasori nods calmly. “Our target has been hiring mercenary ninja outside Kirigakure’s hierarchy to eliminate business rivals. One of those who would be on his hit list scraped together the money and contacted us. Consider it a form of preventative medicine.”

Wonder if we could just borrow a poisoned needle from Sasori and find a way to have a butterfly carry it and gently poke our target while they sleep then leave.

Or summon a bird to do it. How good could our target's defense against tiny fliers really be? Worth looking into, and Sasori is a legend with poison.

Sasori must have some form of smaller puppet for stealth ops and scouting. I would be kinda odd if he didn't.
>>
>>4149949
“We’ll do the same to the guards as we did to the bellboy,” you suggest. “I’ll keep them under genjutsu, you slip in and take out the target. One body.”

“Agreed,” Sasori nods curtly. “I’ll prepare a specialty puppet for the task.”

After flitting like a shadow through the mist, observing for a full fifteen minutes, you snare the guards in a subtle false surroundings genjutsu that essentially replicates the conditions for those fifteen minutes in a loop… the only trick is to pick two points within those fifteen minutes to put the “splice” such that the loop is smooth and continuous.

“That’s it,” you insist quietly from the rooftop of the nobleman’s compound. “Go ahead and send it in.”

Sasori unseals a puppet, a small body with two counter-rotating blades set at a wide angle. The timing has to be perfect you realize, since the blades arc through one another’s paths… suspended from underneath the small body, roughly the size of a bird, are a pair of rectangular launchers loaded with senbon. Four each, for a total of eight.

On the front is an eye.

He guides it over the courtyard and into the main building while you maintain the genjutsu and secure the area.

“Shikigami no Mai: Jigokuchō.”

You scatter your butterflies around the area now that the shinobi guards are incapable of noticing them, and take stock of your situation.

“Are you finished?” you ask Sasori after a few minutes.

Eventually you hear the faint thrumming of the spinning blades as the puppet returns to Sasori’s hand so that he can seal it into a scroll.

“It’s finished,” he declares. “The target is dead.”

“Good,” you nod curtly. “Now let’s get out of here before anyone finds the body.”

You activate your sharingan, checking in on something your butterflies were telling you about as you and Sasori make a run across the still waters for a nearby island where you can lay low, take some time to cover your tracks.

“Sasori-han,” you announce. “We’re about to be encircled.”

Sasori takes a moment to confirm. “Yes, I believe you’re right. Twenty-three shinobi.”

“One has a powerful chakra,” you muse. “Around the level of our own cohort.”

“The island is a trap,” Sasori-han assesses your situation. “The twenty are likely ANBU hunter-nin, closing us into that trap.”

“Then I guess the best way to break through that trap is to spring it?” you suggest.

“Agreed.”

On the karst island you were heading for, there is a shallow bay created when a chunk of the towering limestone fell free and shattered into the seas. It’s on the shore of that bay, where there was once an old complex of buildings that now lie overgrown and shrouded in the omnipresent mist, that you find the shinobi who have been waiting for you.

One is a boy, about your age, with camouflaged pants and a ribbed sweater. Over that he wears a vest-like flak jacket bearing the emblem of Kirigakure. His hair is light blue, and he wears rectangular glasses that seem like they’re fitted to ear muffs… and on his back…

“Hiramekarei,” Sasori quietly confirms.

Also present is an older man with bluish-grey hair, wearing a thick teal kimono over a shirt and pants, along with an eyepatch and ear studs which trail sealing tags. The distortions in the right side of his face, which run around and most likely under the eyepatch, along with the sealing tags suggests that he possesses an eye not unlike your own in properties. But it’s less likely to be a sharingan judging by the design of the eyepatch, and more likely to be a byakugan capable of seeing through it.

“Ao,” Sasori muses. “A sensory-type famously possessing the byakugan.”

Third is a woman somewhere between the other two in age, with long reddish-brown hair that covers one side of her face, and a blue garment revealing mesh leggings on her right thigh and baring her shoulders and upper chest. With this goes a familiar angular hat, blue with a white square at the front and white trailing around the back. At its front is the symbol for ‘Water’.

“So this would be the new Mizukage?” Sasori declares, this time for the benefit of the Kiri-nin present.
>1/2
>>
>>4151788
The Mizukage… not that Sasori’s telling you anything you couldn’t already guess, but it’s probably a bad situation you’ve walked into. While you’re fairly confident that you and Sasori together could probably kill her and her adjutants, especially if you rely on senjutsu to do so, it would be a problem for Akatsuki if you did. And seeing as this mission was a trap to start with, they’re probably not just going to let you go.

“Well now, I see we have two interesting guests in our land this evening,” the Mizukage greets you even as the hunter-nin close in around you. “Unexpected guests are a rarity here… you see, most people know better than to enter the Land of Water without permission.”

“But then again you aren’t most people, are you?” she smiles coyly. “Sasori of the Red Sand.”

… it seems you’re being taken too lightly, which plays to your strategic advantage.

“Amazing!” you smile brightly. “Do you know this woman, Sasori-tono? Or are you just that famous?”

“We’ve only just met,” Sasori-han grumbles, understanding immediately what you’re doing. “You should stay back while I assess the new Mizukage’s strength, Naori-kun.”

“If you think that’s best, Sasori-tono,” you reply… what the hell is he planning, you wonder?

“Chōjūrō,” the man with the eyepatch named Ao orders. “Take care of the girl. And be careful… she possesses the sharingan.”

Interesting… so he can see the flow of chakra to your eye using the byakugan?

You instantly cover yourself, continuing the act. “Gah! Quit looking at me you dirty old bastard!”

It takes a few seconds for what you’re suggesting to click in his brain…

“.. wait, whaaa...”

“You totally were looking, weren’t you!? Sicko! Pervert!”

“Ao,” the Mizukage addresses her subordinate. “Quit using that eye for stupid games or I’ll cut it out of you myself.”

“But… but Lady Mizukage...” Ao visibly deflates.

“Chōjūrō,” she continues despite his protests. “I want you to capture that girl. She could be the one Akatsuki used to do it.”

“R-right!” the boy with the glasses stammers, readying Hiramekarei.

“To do what, exactly?” Sasori-han demands, even as he produces a scroll from a pouch at the small of his back. “She’s the rookie member. So far as I’m aware she’s never even been to the Land of Water.”

“We’ll determine the truth of that for ourselves,” the Mizukage declares, taking a few steps out onto the water and extending one finger. “You’ll be coming with us.”

With that declaration, the boy wielding Hiramekarei advances.
>1/2
>>
>>4153016
“The Twinsword, hm?” you muse as he swings it at you, still wrapped in bandages.

You easily dodge the swing, planting a foot and kicking off of Hiramekarei into the air with a half turn. “Hey wait, isn’t Kiba also a pair though?”

A hail of unsealed paper shuriken pelt Chōjūrō, who raises Hiramekarei and defends himself with it like a shield… only to notice at the last possible second that the shuriken all around him are about to explode.

He manages to sidestep the worst of the blast, only to find you bearing down on him before he can regain his footing. You draw Umekiri in an instant, smashing the blade with her hilt to move it out of the way before tightening your wrist to bring the point back in line for a deadly slash. Chōjūrō is forced to take a step back to evade, only to find more paper shuriken coming his way. These however burst into smoke as he dodges.

“Kuchiyose: Isoka!”

The tiny shrike flits through the air.

“Ah! It’s a fight!” she chirps excitedly.

“Against one of the Seven Swords,” you confirm. “So let’s have some fun!”

“Awesome!” she chirps back, zooming in a circle. “What do we do first? You wanna do a team attack?”

You take a moment to assess the progress of Sasori-han’s battle. He’s released twenty puppets to tie down the Kiri ANBU, and has summoned Hiruko as a puppet rather than as armor. Seems he’s holding the tricks in his own body in reserve, like a good puppeteer. The Mizukage and Ao are still in the phase of figuring their opponent out, neither one has committed themselves fully.

“Which way are you looking!?”

Chōjūrō unleashes the Hiramekarei in full, bringing it down like a giant blue hammer onto the water where you stood a moment before.

“Oh, just watching Sasori-tono’s fight,” you muse playfully. “It was thoughtful of you to call out your attack… but is that really a sound strategy? Unless...”

You place your free hand against your forehead dramatically. “Unless you’re totally smitten with me? Oh my, ‘love at first fight’ is so romantic!”

“N-n-no!” Chōjūrō insists loudly. “That’s not it!”

“Oh,” you reply, injecting a tone of disappointment into your voice. “So you don’t think I’m attractive, is that it?”

“What?” he replies, totally at a loss. “No, that’s not it either!”

He’s forced to dodge as Isoka fires a trio of Tenkyū in his direction from above.
>2/3
>>
>>4153028
“Bully!” she chirps. “Taking advantage of a sweet, innocent girl’s feelings? How dare!?”

“Quit messing with me!” he shouts, releasing Hiramekarei’s chakra in a wide, swift swing that slices through the air at chest height for some thirty feet’s distance.

You easily duck, charging in low with a swing of your own that momentarily disarms him.

“Sorry,” you apologize as your sharingan unseals.

He reflexively shuts his eyes, allowing you to deliver a powerful roundhouse kick to his chest that sends him skipping back off the surface of the water. Isoka settles down at your shoulder.

“Hey, don’t you think you’re laying it on a bit thick?” she asks in a hushed voice.

“They’re not taking me seriously,” you grumble. “They’ll live to regret it.”

Next, Chōjūrō tries a different tactic.

A thicker, clinging mist rolls in that completely disrupts your line of sight. Even the battle between the Mizukage and Sasori-han is obscured.

“I’m heading up,” Isoka declares.

“Go,” you confirm quietly. “The mist is even blocking my sharingan, so I’ll be counting on you.”

“Right.”

You’ll also be counting on your chakra-sensing butterflies… since all of this mist has been kneaded together with Chōjūrō’s chakra you won’t be able to sense him that way. Instead you have them settle onto the water’s surface, setting up to track his footsteps across the glassy surface of the shallow bay.

From a rather detached perspective, this actually works to your advantage. Chōjūrō’s technique will also block Ao’s byakugan, allowing you to gather senjutsu without being detected. It’s perfect.

So you summon a shadow clone before hiding yourself in the calm, shallow waters. And there you remain for fifteen seconds while your shadow clone fights Chōjūrō. It seems like he’s playing it confidently, fighting from a distance with senbon and slashes produced by Hiramekarei. But now that you’re out of his mist and under the water, your senjutsu-enhanced sensing ability lets you track him perfectly under the water.

As he makes what he thinks is the killing blow, with Hiramekarei transformed into a gigantic hammer.

You’re updated on all this when the shadow clone is dispersed, before you burst forth from the water, Umekiri in hand.

“A clone!?” Chōjūrō realizes in an instant before you plant a roundhouse kick in his ribs that sends him skipping end-over-end across the water and into the karst.

You follow through with a Tenran-shuriken to his chest, which is enough to put his lights out. The mist fades quickly to what’s considered “normal” for this region, revealing evidence of a battle you’ve only just been able to keep tabs on.

It seems like the Mizukage is able to release large amounts of heated stone… both lava and quicklime, judging by the results and the amount of pumice floating on the surface of the bay where she and Sasori-han have been fighting.

“Chōjūrō!” the Mizukage calls out, having realized that your own fight has abruptly ended.

Sasori-han uses the opportunity to fall back, together with his remaining puppets.

“I’ve had to use the Third Kazekage,” he admits, “his iron sand is keeping her at bay… for now.”

“Only ‘at bay’, you said?” you muse.

“I figured that killing her with the Third’s ultimate technique might draw unwanted attention,” he informs you… good, so you’re on the same page after all. “So I’ve even avoided the attempt.”

“That may be best,” you admit quietly, watching as the Mizukage sends Aoi to check on the downed Swordsman. “What about the ANBU?”

Sasori-han spares you a glance. “What about the ANBU?”

We can't really hold back against a Kage. Either we were going to use it later in the fight or Sasori would have have to stop holding back. The mist gave us the perfect excuse to use senjutsu. I doubt Ao's won't be able to recognize it, but it will at least be less blatant than doing it in front of them.

“Be careful, Lady Mizukage!” Ao calls out. “Something’s changed with her chakra… and she’s suddenly gotten a lot more powerful!”

For the first time, the Mizukage seems to actually pay attention to you… in fact she very nearly locked eyes with you by mistake. “Understood.”

“You’re finally taking me seriously,” you comment. “That’s refreshing. And I’d hoped that you of all people would be someone who wouldn’t underestimate me at first sight.”

“That was my mistake,” she replies. “Though I see now that you’re much too dangerous to capture easily.”

“No member of Akatsuki would be so easily defeated,” Sasori-han observes stoically. “In reality, between the two of us, it is my partner who is the stronger fighter.”

“Which presents a problem,” she continues. “I had wanted to interrogate her, but by the look of it...”

“Naori,” you interrupt.

“Excuse me?”

“Naori,” you repeat. “My name is Naori, and I’d appreciate it if you’d stop talking about me as though I weren’t here.”

“Well then,” she addresses you, still resolutely avoiding direct eye contact, “it seems, Naori, that we have a problem. Our trap has succeeded, but we’re both set to use lethal force.”

“I’m not unreasonable,” you muse calmly, sheathing Umekiri for the moment. “You could have just asked if you had questions for us.”

“And would you answer me truthfully?” the Mizukage presses warily.

You shrug. “Depends entirely on the question.”

“You aren’t exactly selling me on this approach,” the Mizukage frowns.

You approach her, slowly, putting yourself in easier range of her attacks but also closing the gap a little to make an iai strike that much surer if she starts to weave hand signs. You stop as soon as she tenses her muscles, and take a single step back.

“The alternative is a deathmatch neither of us particularly wants,” you point out. “I figured I wouldn’t need to sell it too hard.”

“Fair point,” the Mizukage admits, relaxing just slightly at the realization that you’re committed to de-escalating the situation. “So where to begin?”

“Seriously?” you muse. “This usually begins with names, and you have mine.”

“Terumi Mei,” the woman introduces herself firmly. “I am the Fifth Mizukage.”

“I wish it were under better circumstances,” you incline your head politely. “Terumi-tono.”

“You may recall I mentioned my assumption that Akatsuki used you to achieve something,” Terumi Mei explains, still not looking you in the eyes. “The reason I went to such trouble to capture either of you personally.”

“I remember something to that effect,” you agree. “Something more than that crass nobleman we were hired to assassinate, I’d assume?”

“… you really don’t know what I’m talking about, do you?” she muses.

“Please explain it to me,” you reply calmly.

“We have believed for a while now that the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura, was under a genjutsu,” Terumi explains in a solemn tone. “We confirmed it ourselves… when Ao finally had a chance to break the genjutsu, it killed Yagura. That is why I am now the Mizukage.”

“And you believe Akatsuki had something to do with that,” you realize with a frown. “Yeah, no… that’s… kind of a leap in logic, don’t you think?”

“Specifically we believe that the sharingan was used to control him,” Terumi-tono presses. “Which I have confirmed you possess, in addition to the rumors that Uchiha Itachi is counted among your ranks.”

There’s any number of ways you could attack that particular line of reasoning, but one point in particular…

“How long was Yagura in power?” you ask.

“Since shortly after the end of the War,” Terumi-tono replies, the eye not hidden behind her bangs narrowing. “What are you getting at?”

“And there is no Uchiha hiding within your village’s borders?” you press. “You haven’t simply overlooked an obvious culprit?”

“You’re saying that it could have been any Uchiha who possessed the sharingan from any point between Yagura’s election to Kage and his death?”

You nod curtly. “A genjutsu powerful enough to persist after the caster leaves, and to kill the victim if it’s undone, is beyond the ordinary genjutsu cast by the sharingan. So there’s no reason to believe that it follows any of the usual rules.”

“Tell me, Ao,” Terumi-tono demands as her conscious assistant joins her at her side. “Is she lying?”

After considering it for a moment, Ao shakes his head. “Even though her chakra is… the way it is now… I observed none of the usual evidence of a lie.”

“What do you mean, the way it is now?” she presses.

“… have you ever swam in the open ocean, Mizukage-sama?”

“A few times,” Terumi-tono nods curtly. “Are you saying the sensation is similar?”

Ao nods curtly. “Sensing her chakra is like swimming in an ocean where you can see neither the shore nor the bottom. It appears calm… but it’s deeply unsettling to consider.”

“Thank you, Ao,” she replies, seemingly disconcerted by that description. “And Chōjūrō?”

“Unconscious,” Ao informs her. “And lucky his opponent is more nonchalant than her partner.”

“Don’t involve me,” Sasori-han insists sternly.

Hmmm. Naori might be able to make a few hypothesis with all the facts she has. She knows there is another Uchiha alive and there might be a few stolen Sharingans running around if she assumes Itachi didn't take them all.

We should ask the Mizukage a few more questions to try to get a better picture.

>Other?
>Ask the Mizukage a few more questions to get a better picture: When do they think Yagura started being mind controlled? What happened to the body? Did Yagura have any seal on him that might explain his death instead of a genjutsu? Was there anything noteworthy that happened before Yagura started being mind controlled?

Guus, keep in mind to not hint we know a third Uchiha is currently alive. We don't know if we're currently spied on by Zetsu.

gotcha so we know he has a sharingan but we also know kakashi has one as well so it stands to reason there could be many unaccounted for sharingan as well as possibly even full-on uchiha floating around that we don't know of so it wouldn't benefit us to tip our hand about there being a possible schism in the akatsuki to the mizukage on our first meeting, especially with sasori there which could open up bickering infront of outsiders.

“There’s any number of possible culprits,” you shrug, “and all I can say about it is that I honestly have no clue which of those possibilities is the reality.”

Terumi-tono listens patiently at first, her face impassive.

“You actually answered me truthfully,” she realizes.

You nod. “Sure. Now… I’d hate to follow that up with further bloodshed, but against you I get the feeling I wouldn’t be able to hold back.”

You squeeze Umekiri’s scabbard, your hand subtly pushing her free to be drawn at an instant’s notice… combined with your senjutsu-enhanced sensory abilities you’ll be able to react to any move almost as soon as she decides on making it.

“We can’t just let them go,” Ao cautions the Mizukage. “They’re a threat… and they are here illegally.”

“Please,” you keep your focus solely on the Mizukage. “Let’s just all walk away this time.”

Sasori-han is readying himself for an attack, you can tell by his posture, and by the waving movements of the chakra thread attached to the Third Kazekage puppet. You raise your hand, signalling for him to stand by… which he reluctantly does for the moment.

“Were it my choice I would agree,” Terumi-tono sighs wearily. “But as Mizukage my hands are bound. I must at least try.”

Terumi Mei begins to knead chakra, and raises her hands to begin weaving signs… it’s likely going to be one of her Lava-release techniques you figure, watching earth and fire blend near her navel.

Your shunshin is swift and your draw precise, though it’s not quite enough to take a Kage-class opponent down and you know it. But it does force her to stop weaving her signs and dodge, which lets you take a second step and leave behind an illusory clone. So when Terumi-tono slides across the bay to a stop and starts again, you’re already there with a blade to the side of her neck.

“You lose,” you tell her, only for her substituted body to melt away into water as the real Mizukage bursts upwards from below. You kick her kunai-thrust away, turning in air to slash at her body with Umekiri’s edge only to watch her wrist bubble…

A water clone? So she’s still going with the capture method at this late stage.

A swift slash disperses the clone, and a powerful fist slams into the water of the bay, pushing it upwards in a fountain of spray which you then use to hide.

“Yōton: Sekkaigyō!”

This time she’s bought herself a moment to weave the seals and spread a massive amount of acidic quicklime that hardens when hit contacts the water… which would have trapped you had you still been there.

“Mizukage-sama!” Ao shouts. “Above you!”

Terumi-tono is forced to dodge a rapid series of Tenkyū from above, both your own and Isoka’s, which stick into the shoreline all around her. She weaves more hand seals as she dances, creating a new water clone who moves out over the bay as you land as well from your lofty leap.

Both Terumis weave seals, each a different set. The real one begins first, weaving a long series of seals for a water release technique while the other charges closer and weaves for a lava release technique.

The clone gets hers off first, spitting out a large aerial spread of lava that arcs over you like a dome.

“Yōton: Yōkai!”

The real Terumi finishes next with a massive, dragon-shaped roil of seawater. “Suiton: Suiryūdan!”

Effectively, the dome prevents you from withdrawing while the water dragon missile crashes into you headon… at least, that’s what Terumi-tono is going for.

“Senpō: Rekuyemu.”

“There was no way to predict she would use a storm release technique,” Ao assures the Fifth Mizukage several minutes later, your attack having blown a hole in the lava dome just in time to make her initially believe her combination attack had connected.

“No one will fault you for losing them under such circumstances.”

You can tell through your remaining paper butterfly that the battles have left Terumi-tono legitimately exhausted. She’s still panting from exertion, and takes a few moments to catch her breath and slow her heart rate.

If it hadn’t been for your last-second gamble with Izumi’s mangekyō that might have been a bit harder, but the Benzaitennyo technique helped you figure out how to mix your chakra natures in the moment, giving you an ideal counter to lava release. You figure you’ll be able to use it most easily either with the mangekyō or while in sage mode… but sorting out the specifics will come later.

“Damn,” Terumi-tono curses. “To think that Sasori even swapped out for one of his damaged puppets while we were both distracted… we had no idea.”

You scribble characters across the butterfly before unfolding it and abandoning it, leaving Terumi-tono to find it floating on the surface among the debris.

“A note?” Ao muses.

“Next time I’ll buy you dinner,” Terumi-tono pretends to read the message aloud.

“That girl...” Ao grumbles angrily, only for Terumi to have a chuckle at his expense.

In reality, you apologized for troubling her as Mizukage, revealing that you understood why she felt as though she had no choice to attack her and that, this time at least, you won’t hold a grudge.

“Surprisingly thoughtful,” she muses as you and Sasori-han eventually leave your normal sensing range.

You fought the new Mizukage!?” Fū practically squeals in excitement. “Oooh, what was she like!? Was she pretty? Was she strong? You’ve gotta tell me!”

“She used lava release and water release, both extremely well and sometimes at the same time,” you recall. “I can see why they made her a Kage.”

“Well go on!” Fū demands. “What did you think of her?”

>She’s surprisingly well-meaning, which may prove difficult for her as Kage.

You shrug, slumping backwards and laying on the patio of the shrine. “Well, she’s certainly skilled enough to be the Mizukage… she used a water clone to attack me with a lava release technique and a water dragon bullet at the same time.”

“But I don’t know as much about what she’s actually like rather than as the Mizukage.”

“Whaddya mean?” Fū asks curiously.

“She’s definitely beautiful,” you admit, “and based on how she carried herself she’s a decent person. I wouldn’t mind getting to know her a bit better, were things different.”

But, things being what they are, I don’t think that’ll ever happen.”

“Why’s that?” she asks.

“Because she’s the leader of a hidden village, and I’m a mercenary,” you shrug. “That’s just how it goes… she needs to look out for her village’s interests, and my interests will probably conflict with hers at some point.”

“But you’re friends with Gaara, aren’t you?” Fū points out.

“And he’s going to be obliged to fight Akatsuki at some point,” you reply calmly. “He’d probably maintain that keeping Shūkaku in his village to maintain the balance of power is in his village’s interests.”

“I mean… isn’t it?” Fū wonders aloud.

“Shūkaku’s one of the tailed beasts that’s caused a lot of problems in the past,” you remind her. “Which is why so many of his people had trouble acknowledging that he wasn’t the threat. I suppose it was probably the same for Uzumaki Naruto because of the Nine-Tails sealed inside him.”

“He’s the ‘idiot’ you talked about?”

You nod curtly. “Well-meaning, sure… but also an idiot.”

“I’d like to meet him some day!” Fū tells you cheerfully.

“You’d get along,” you agree. “So maybe some day, if things either go really well for Akatsuki or really badly, I’ll introduce you.”

“Hey thanks!”

“Of course,” you smile. “Never let it be said I didn't do the least I could do.”

“And that summarizes our contact report with the Fifth Kazekage,” Sasori concludes his retelling of your battle in the Land of Water.

“Interesting development,” Pain muses, “but ultimately it has little bearing on our operations.”

“Can’t believe you fucked that one up,” Hidan sighs loudly. “I’d have never let that Mizukage chick walk away alive.”

“You’d have been burned to a crisp, you idiot,” Kakuzu grumbles. “Stop running your mouth.”

“Screw you!” Hidan protests.

“Quiet!” Konan snaps loudly. “Naori and Sasori made the correct decision to withdraw. They avoided complicating Akatsuki’s situation further.”

“Whatever,” Hidan shrugs.

You’re actually confused to learn that your mission is actually from Konohagakure. Evidently there’s been a whole series of diplomatic mishaps surrounding a missing ninja from that village, who ran off with a relic once owned by Senju Tobirama. For a while Rokushō Aoi served as a jōnin in your village, but after being defeated by Uchiha Sasuke and Uzumaki Naruto he fled in disgrace. Now he’s hiding out in the Land of Grass.

There are a number of reasons that Konoha came to you: they don’t want Amegakure to know that they went after their former jōnin who still has not been declared a missing ninja, nor do they want Kusakagure to learn that Aoi is conducting small-scale mercenary missions within their territory. They also want to get the relic back… understandable, given what it is.

“So he’s got this… this ‘sword’ thing?” Hidan asks you, scratching his head.

You silently curse Pain’s name for assigning you and Hidan to work together on this mission… low risk, so it’s an easy excuse.

“Damn it,” you mutter. “I was just saying, it’s called the Raijin sword. It looks like a vajra, and the blade is concentrated lightning chakra projected from the hilt.”

“Uh-huh.”

“It belonged to the Second Hokage,” you continue.

“Uh-huh.”

“Konoha wants it back.”

“Whatever,” Hidan yawns. “Anything in it for me?”

“We’ll be fighting some mercenaries,” you shrug. “Nothing too troublesome.”

“Then that’s fine,” Hidan agrees. “Get the blood flowing, ya know.”

“Sure,” you shrug. “A good fight can be exciting.”

“So who’re we meeting with for the details?”

“We’ll find out soon,” you frown. “Probably some jōnin.”

Normally you’d send Sasori in on his own… but with Hidan as your temporary teammate, do you really trust him that far? You can already tell there’s a team of chūnin-level shinobi from Konoha all gathered around in the forest when you reach the cabin you were sent to. They may well be ANBU.

You’re probably already under observation at the moment, so you transform some paper tags into a mask to wear over your face, and to add a hood to your standard Akatsuki cloak. Finally, you mask some of the more obvious features of Umekiri’s fittings so that they appear more “average”.

“What a waste of time,” Hidan sighs. “If whoever’s in there’s gonna be a problem, just kill ‘em.”

“No killing the client,” you reply wearily. “Seriously, were you ever really a shinobi?”

Hidan shrugs. “Iunno. What’s a ‘shinobi’ to you?”

The question goes unanswered as you finally meet the contact from Konoha… none other than Shizune, sitting behind a table with an ANBU member standing behind her in full kit. Shizune sets a small scroll on the table in front of her and waits for you to take it.

“This lays out all of the information on Rokushō Aoi so far,” she explains curtly, before her eyes fall on you. “Interesting.”

“Interesting?” Hidan counters. “What is this, a zoo?”

“I didn’t,” Shizune begins.

“Down, boy,” you chastise Hidan swiftly. “Please ignore my partner and continue… it’s what most of us do.”

“Hey!” Hidan protests. “Don’t you fuckin’ ignore me!”

“I… see,” Shizune muses. “I was just going to say it’s interesting that you’re wearing such an obvious uniform, but you’ve gone so far to cover your identity.”

“Toldja it was a waste of time,” Hidan grumbles.

You cut him a glare.

“Now… are you going to lose the mask?” Shizune asks you. “Or are we going to keep pretending that the explanation isn’t obvious?”

She knows that the reason you’re hiding your face is that Konohagakure knows of you… she knows that you’re a young woman, and combine that with the ANBU reports, it’s entirely likely that she’ll be able to piece together your identity.

“This seriously sucks,” you grumble. “But since you’ll probably figure it out eventually, I might as well get out ahead of it… though I want this between the two of us and Tsunade-tono..."

"... please."

When you take off the mask and lower the hood, the look in Shizune’s eyes says all you need to know. “Naori-kun, why have you joined Akatsuki?”

“Sometimes people change, sometimes situations change,” you tell her calmly. “In my case, it’s my situation that changed… I lost a close friend.”

“So you became disillusioned with your home,” Shizune guesses.

“Yeah, no, it just meant I was easier to recruit,” you reply. “Akatsuki needed my skills, and I had no reason to deny them.”

“Why’re we even having this little chat?” Hidan demands. “I could just kill’er. It’d be easy as snapping my fingers.”

“If I wanted her dead I’d do it myself,” you snap, glaring at Hidan. “Use your head, Hidan. What happens if we do kill her?”

“… she’d be dead,” Hidan shrugs. “I dunno, you tell me.”

“If she dies then we’re off this mission,” you tell him, “and Konoha’s left sorting out this mess on its own, or using mercenaries even less scrupulous than we are. That dramatically increases the chances of a conflict breaking out.”

“So?” Hidan asks nonchalantly. “I’d be down with that.”

“And I’m not,” you counter. “There’s more than enough violence in the world as it is… no need for us to go around making it worse.”

“Jeez, what a pain in the ass,” Hidan grumbles. “Fine, you win. I’ll just try and make do with what this mission’s givin’ out.”

“… make do?” Shizune repeats. “Do I even want to know?”

You shake your head. “He’s a Jashinist… so no, probably not.”

“I’ll keep him in line.”

“Naori-kun?”

You turn to glance over your shoulder before leaving. “Yeah? What is it?”

“Why did you try to hide your identity?”

You pause to consider your answer. “For the same reason I asked you to keep this from the genin in your village… because I wanted to avoid any misunderstandings. So now I’ll just have to ask that you and Tsuna-han believe me when I say I have my own reasons for what I’m doing.”

There’s a brief silence.

“I understand.”

You head calmly across the border and into the Land of Grass, following the details on the scroll that Shizune gave you.

The location in question is a small castle town… not a fancy castle of course, but functional, with walls of rammed earth topped with wooden upper works. Gates, yagura towers at the corners, all of the basic features at a cut-rate price.

“What a dump,” Hidan shrugs, twirling his triple-bladed scythe and resting it against his shoulder. “Think our boy’s in there?”

“According to our intelligence,” you confirm. “They’ve resorted to small-time thuggery when they don’t have missions.”

“What sorta missions do scrubs like this get anyway?” he scoffs.

You shrug. “Anything that’s either too dirty for the hidden villages, done for self-important idiots who aren’t wealthy enough to pay hidden-village rates.”

“So like us, but lame,” Hidan muses.

“Kinda?”

“This is getting boring,” he admits. “I wanna take care of the important one… Zowwy, or whatever it was.”

“Aoi.”

“Yeah, him.”

“He’s all yours,” you shrug. “I’ll point him out to you.”

“No need,” Hidan smirks. “I’ve got this.”

The first man who tries to stop him, Hidan brutally kills with his scythe. The blades tear into him as his body rolls off each blade and onto the next, ripping through his flak jacket before the momentum flings him through the air. He lands on a watch tower in a sickening noise best described as halfway between a ‘splat’ and a ‘crunch’.

“Listen up!” he shouts at the stunned mercenary-nin. “We’re looking for a guy by the name of Kokushō Yaoi!”

“Rokushō Aoi,” you correct Hidan.

“Him too!” Hidan shouts, whirling his scythe through the air to defend against kunai thrown from several angles at once. He’s slow, at least by your standards, but powerfully-built and masterful at handling his unusual weapon.

“Bring him out or you’ll all end up like that piece of trash!”

Hidan aims his scythe at the body of the man he killed first, which finally rolls off the roof and lands in the courtyard with a wet thump.

The ninja glance at each other… a few try to run, but one of them is caught by Hidan’s scythe as he hurls the weapon past him and pulls back hard on the cable running under his sleeve. The weapon’s blades make a bloody spectacle of his victim’s shoulder and upper chest, the burbling, bright red suggesting he must’ve ripped open a lung.

That’s the entire point of its exotic design… to draw as much blood as possible.

“What’s all this about!?” a voice shouts as the man you’re looking for, Rokushō Aoi, emerges from a large tent atop the rammed-earth foundation where a wooden keep once stood.

He has the sword in his hand, a crackling blade of electricity that looks distinctly unbroken. How would you even ‘break’ lightning anyway?

“Seems the blade can only be broken temporarily,” you observe. “When it’s used again the next time it produces a new blade… not like it stores the ‘blade’ inside the hilt anyway, so I’m not sure why I’m su...”

You’re interrupted as Hidan charges Aoi with his own scythe raised and a frenzied laugh.

Like the other shinobi present you end up watching as the two have a brief exchange, over the course of which a crushing overhand blow manages to batter Aoi’s guard just enough to prick his shoulder. After this Hidan leans back to avoid a counter-stroke, planting the end of his scythe on the ground and pushing off with his whole strength to fling himself back through the air, landing a good distance away.

“Scared?” Aoi sneers. “Against this blade, I would be too.”

So...he basically just asked for Amanda Hugginkiss.
>>
>>415879“Nah,” Hidan replies confidently. “Why would I be scared of a dead man?”

He swiftly draws a sigil in the dust at his feet with one toe, then licks some of the blood off the blade of his scythe that drew it from Aoi.

“The hell are you doing, you freak?” Aoi demands, raising his sword and preparing for another strike. “Nevermind, I don’t care… I’m not gonna let you do it!”

He charges, and Hidan produces a telescoping spear-like weapon from his sleeve, apparently to defend himself… only to pierce his own leg.

Aoi collapses mid-charge.

“What the...” you mutter, examining the black skin and white markings Hidan now sports. Not ‘black’ like he’s dark-skinned, like some of the Kumo-nin you’ve met… but actually, genuinely black, like he’s been covered in black ink.

Hidan breaks out in a fit of deranged laughter.

“What was that you were saying!?” he crows as Aoi reaches for the sword-hilt he dropped when he went to the ground. “I’m not gonna let you!”

This time Hidan stabs himself in the right wrist, and Aoi is left cradling his bloodied limb and screaming in pain.

“Die!” several of the shinobi shout, moving in to cover their fallen… leader, comrade… something to them they feel like dying over.

Their kunai and shuriken, including one folding fūma shuriken, pepper Hidan’s body after he refuses to even block them. Instead, it’s Aoi that continues to writhe in agony as new wounds rip themselves open across his body.

So this is how he tortured Fū… he got a sample of her blood and used her team’s own attacks to rip her body apart.

You glance down at your right hand, balled so tightly into a fist that your nails are drawing blood.

What’s wrong, you stupid fucking heathens!?” Hidan roars. “You’re getting to see the glory of Lord Jashin firsthand! You should feel honored!”

What happens next is a one-sided slaughter.

You’re honestly so at a loss as to what’s even going on that you hesitate in trying to stop it… and a part of you realizes that from Pain and the rest of Akatsuki’s perspective, preserving the secret behind Hidan’s Jashinist ritual would be prudent. Which means, naturally, that these mercenaries will have to die.

The least he could do is not tear them apart like that, though.

>>4158824
After the last body falls, as Rokushō Aoi watches on his knees in horror, Hidan returns to his circle and flips the little black spear into the air.

“Now then, time to finish things properly,” he muses as he catches the spear at its midpoint. “All play and no work makes Jashin a vengeful god...”

Aoi’s eyes turn to meet yours, wide in disbelief, as Hidan plunges the spear into his own heart. A fresh surge of blood dribbles from Aoi’s mouth as his eyes slide out of focus, and he collapses onto his face.

Hidan lies down in the center of his circle, spear still protruding from his heart, and begins chanting a prayer of some kind to his twisted god of slaughter. That leaves you to recover the Raijin sword from Aoi’s body.

“Kakuzu wanted this guy… right?” you mutter.

“I don’t give a damn,” Hidan replies. “It’s his own business… trading blood for money makes me sick.”

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to finish the prayers to Lord Jashin that accompany a fresh sacrifice. So shut up for a while.”

You quietly seal the corpse into a scroll, then take up the sword.

On the vajra-shaped hilt is a strange marking, like a sealing formula of some kind…

Using the power of Izumi’s mangekyō to analyse the hilt of the blade more closely, you begin to tease apart the compact lines of sealing script one at a time as Hidan chants several paces away. At first you figured that the Leaf wanted this sword back because of what it is… but that doesn’t make sense the more you think about it.

If you remember correctly Aoi stole the blade, but before that it wasn’t even in use. So why not? The Seven Swords of the Mist see almost constant battle, as do most legendary weapons that are in the hands of those who know how to use them. And of course there has to be someone capable of using this weapon in Konohagakure. So why was the Raijin blade hidden away, never to be used in battle even when the village itself was under direct threat?

The answer is on the hilt: a sealing formula for a space-time ninjutsu, not completely different from the summoning technique but at the same time far more refined in how it accesses and uses the dimension that is keyed to any particular user of that technique.

It takes a while for it to dawn on you: what you’ve found is an original, uncompressed version of the Hiraishin seal as used by Senju Tobirama.

“You done yet?” you ask, trying to hide your excitement from Hidan… as well as the tension you feel.

“Just about.”

You quickly copy all of the details of the Hiraishin into a scroll, copying the details using your own sealing abilities to ensure it’s a precise facsimile. Non-functioning of course, as you realize that this expression of the formula was written to access its user’s summoning dimension. So of course if you were to wish it, you’d have to completely redesign the formula for it to work with your own summoning.

In other words you have the framework, but lack the understanding of spacetime manipulation and your own summoning dimension in particular that would be required to complete the technique.

That must be what makes the Hiraishin such a rarity, even among the Senju clan of old, and among the Hokages through time. In direct contrast to the shadow clone and reanimation techniques, which are surprisingly simple in theory but more difficult in practice, the theory to the Hiraishin is stupidly difficult to grasp.

Even knowing what you do already, this could take years to learn.

I see a number of people want to inflict vengeance on Hidan for Fu.

Not making any judgements here, but I'd question whether conventional stuff would work. Hidan is such an oddball, it's going to be difficult to predict what would even work as far as righteous inflictions of retribution.

Not to mention the kook might enjoy it.
>>
>>4159504
Our vengeance will be swift and permanent. We're a sealing expert. What is his canon fate if not primitive sealing?
>>
>>4159504
Seal him with adamantine sealing chains so he can't use his technique, use the mangekyo to put him under a genjutsu where he's surrounded by rainbows, glitter, puppies and kitties that explode into more tainbows, glitter, puppies and kitties if he tries to kill them and then give him to sasori so he can turn him into a living puppet.

alternatively, burn him to ash on a funeral pyre or or cut off all his limbs, shove a stick up his ass and use him as a training dummy.
>>
>>4158917
“Are you… what the hell did you do to yourself?” you ask Hidan along the way back to the Land of Fire. “How did you create a technique that does that?”

At your question, Hidan simply laughs. “Ah man, that’s a fuckin’ riot! ‘What did I do’, fuckin’ hysterical!”

“Seriously!” you insist. “It’s not genjutsu since it really happened, and it doesn’t seem like any kind of ninjutsu I’ve ever seen… in fact I can’t tell whether it was a ninpō at all.”

“Then maybe I’m not a shinobi after all,” Hidan chuckles. “Or have you forgotten that little chat of ours?”

“It was a ritual,” Hidan explains vaguely. “You’d have to ask the priests what that ritual actually was, and there’s a problem with that.”

“They’re dead, aren’t they?” you guess.

“See? We’re already getting to know each other!”

As little help as Hidan is in figuring out his own abilities, you do manage to reason your way through what you saw during his… you’re going to refer to what happened as a ‘fight’. What seems at first glance to be one ability actually has several components: first and foremost is his ludicrous regenerative capability and durability. Medical ninjutsu isn’t exactly rare to see in the world, but what is rare is the ability to use chakra to stimulate healing without using any identifiable technique at all. But that’s still within the bounds of what you know to be possible… a particularly skilled medical ninja would probably be able to do that.

What’s harder to understand at first is how Hidan killed Aoi in the way that he did.

The mechanics of it involved drawing a marking on the ground that Hidan had to remain within, drawing and ingesting a sample of the victim’s blood, then darkening himself using his chakra somehow. The order seems to be drawing blood first, then ingesting it, then drawing the circle. It’s only at the point where Hidan’s skin changes that he fully establishes the relationship between his body and that of his intended victim.

And you reason that it has to be that: a relationship between the two, created by ingesting the chakra within the victim’s blood and controlled through the ritual instead of using hand signs. The reason he can survive it is because of whatever has been done to his body to enhance his durability and self-regenerative abilities. Quite honestly it’s bizarre, almost more like a parallel evolution to ninjutsu or some sort of throwback to a time before the invention of hand seals.

“I guess you may have a point,” you eventually admit. This really can’t be qualified as ninjutsu, you decide, and therein lies a certain cunning benefit: it’s difficult to prepare against something that defies conventional description.

When you return to Shizune, you’re quick to set the Raijin blade on the little wooden table.

“We recovered the item you specified,” you announce. “There were no survivors.”

Then you produce the scroll you sealed Aoi into. “If you want to bury him, or just to verify it, his body is sealed in here.”

“That won’t be necessary,” Shizune replies, before reconsidering and taking the scroll off your hands. “But thanks. I suppose we should verify it.”

… your continuing attempts to get Umekiri, or more accurately Okuni, to gather and focus natural energy for you as you fight, allowing you to go into sage mode without having to pause in the middle of battle. You think that after several weeks of meditating and flowing chakra through the blade that she gets what you’re trying to do, assuming she “gets” anything at all, and as you continue to repeat those same exercises while in sage mode a thought occurs to you.

This time you try changing the way you think about your sword, instead treating it as though it were a part of your own body. You allow your own chakra to flow into the sword, as you would for any chakra flow techniques, and then draw the natural energy you can sense in your surroundings into the sword where it mixes with your own chakra the same way it would within your body. And through the connection with Umekiri itself, established through your flowing of chakra into its blade, you allow the natural energy to blend with the chakra in your body as well.

And the craziest thing to you is that it works. A chakra blade, properly-utilized, really can be treated for all intents and purposes as a part of its wielder. You’re not sure if Okuni’s presence helps in balancing the chakra or not… so you have to put it to one final test and gather the natural energy while moving.

For that purpose, you spend a month in rigorous training, learning how to maintain your concentration on gathering natural energy into Umekiri while moving. Every day, from the moment you wake to the moment you lose consciousness, is focused entirely on that single goal.

By November the technique is finally finished, after nearly two years of constant small improvements.

“Senpō: Jōshōtō,” you eventually explain it to Fū and Team Ibuki. “The ‘Sword of Assured Victory’, or else ‘Final Sword’, depending on how you read the characters.”

“Is it really that strong of a technique?” Karin wonders. “I mean the name does promise a lot.”

“Come to think of it none of you have ever seen sage mode before,” you realize. “Well then, Karin, watch carefully.”

When you stop drawing in natural energy, Karin is staring at you in a cold sweat.

“Are you okay?” you ask, concerned at her response.

“I… I’m not actually sure,” she admits. “I… I tend to judge people based on their chakra. I told you once, didn’t I? ‘Cool and calming’ was how I described you before?”

“Has that changed?”

“No...” she admits. “But still...”

“It’s… a little like staring at the moon on a cold night,” Karin tries to explain. “There’s a sense of distance there that I’ve never felt with anyone before. It’s hard to explain.”

“Sorry, just forget I said anything.”

“It’s okay,” you reassure her. “It’s not the first time I’ve had someone say something like that.”

“I don’t really get it,” Fū admits.

You also take the time to improve on what you did during the mission to capture Rokushō Aoi, when you added a hood to your Akatsuki cloak using paper tags. This time you create an entire cloak out of paper, so that you can use it to produce marked tags whenever you need them in that way too. It’s not quite the same as Konan-han’s wings, but it’s a good intermediate step.

And with the insane focus that improving your senjutsu demanded, it’s actually kind of surprising you could find the time.

“Is something bothering you?”

Konan-han has been having a rather humble dinner with you in what you’d call a ‘neutral third location’ of sorts: a restaurant in Amegakure where you’ve rented a back room to ensure your privacy. It’s an izakaya-style place, with a single low table and tatami-topped benches… the sort of place where you can order a bottle of chilled sake for the table and eat just about any dish that can be made in the village… and several that can’t normally be made without importing the ingredients.

“It’s just...” you begin, setting aside a bit of soft-shelled crab. “It’s just something Karin said to me, a few days ago.”

What did she say?” Konan asks you.

“She was talking about how my senjutsu chakra felt,” you explain, “and the way she described it left me feeling a little… introspective I guess. That’s all.”

“And how did she describe it?” Konan-han presses you, albeit gently. “Please, I want to know why it’s troubling you.”

“Distant,” you repeat her turn of phrase. Konan-han remains quiet, as though considering what you’ve said to her.
