You are Subaru Kurokawa, son of Vice-Admiral Kagetora Kurokawa of the Zipang Combined Fleet, and the current acting captain of the exiled super battleship Yamato. With your country under the subjugation of an ascendent Tengar Khaganate, the remnants of Zipang’s military establishment, along with powerful allies from the East Europan Imperial Alliance, came up with a daring plan to restore your country’s independence: Operation Ten-Go.

Despite hunted down relentless by both Beiyang and Nanyang Fleets, your crew was ultimately successful at escaping farther down south, into the Gallian East Indies. However, this success came at a lofty cost of your sister's life.

Right now, it appears you've secured some valuable allies with the Gallians in their East Indies colonies, but the threat of the Khaganate still looms by like a gathering storm. However, before any deal could be hammered out, a brawl erupted between one of your crew and the Gallian envoy, which ended with both of them thrown into the infirmary
Upon closer examination, she appears to hold even more mysteries than you expected. It would be better to question her when she wakes.

“What sort of experiments did those research entail?” I asked, hoping she would elaborate further. With how little I know about the subject, any additional information would be welcoming.
“I’m not too sure...” She pressed her right index finger on her cheek as she pondered. “Most of the research was halted and classified right after the Second Europan War, when the funding for the projects stopped.”

“What happened?”
“Political upheaval following the war halted most of the advanced research projects. Additionally, Dr. Forester, our Empire’s leading figure in Valkyrur studies, left the country with part of her team during the same period. Rumors said she resumed her research in Gallia….”
That may explain Lynn’s modifications, but going by Margaret’s words, that was the extent of what she knew.

Just then, a bright ringing from the speakers blared across the room, right as we were about to wrap up our conversation.
“Acting Captain Kurokawa, report to the bridge immediately.”
The flat, no-nonsense tone of the order was none other than Isao.

“Looks like duty calls.” I propped myself off the bed, preparing to resume my duties at the bridge lest Isao grew impatient.
“Ah, I better return to my station as wel-” Margaret attempted to do the same, yet the moment she exerted force with her arms, her injuries once again got the better of her.
Her movement halted as her hand reflexively retracted to cover the wound, accompanied by a grunt of discomfort. She then took a long, deep breath before resuming her actions.

Acting on my feet, I tapped onto her shoulders, preventing her from standing up as I did earlier.
“Margaret, please don’t push yourself. Focus on your recovery, alright?”
I reminded her, bringing my face mere centimeters away from hers.
“O-okay…” She shrunk back, conceding with a soft murmur.
“Don’t worry, I’ll drop by for a visit tomorrow.”
In response, I loosened my grasp and comforted her with a confident promise.

As I was about to turn and leave, I felt a light tug at the corner of my shirt.
“Subaru-kun…”
“Yes?”
Her reply manifested in the form of a large embrace from behind, her arms tightly interlocked around my waist. Her soft body pressed gently onto mine from behind, and the Valkyria rested her head onto my back.
“Please take care, Subaru-kun.”
Margaret softly muttered the words of farewell as I felt her gently cuddling against me.

“Don’t worry, I will.”

I hurried back onto the bridge, wondering what might have compelled Isao to summon me amidst a diplomatic mission. Pushing open the watertight door, I stepped into the bridge that was noticeably less staffed than it was when I last left.

“Commander Nishihara, what’s the situation?” I inquired while giving him a brief salute. He returned the gesture, then handed me a folded piece of paper.
“Message from Agent Igor aboard the Gallian vessel, directed to you.” He answered, clear and straight to the point. “He has managed to secure himself a telegraph set.”

I unfolded the note, revealing three short sentences scribbled onto the paper.

Arrived on Gallian Vassel END
Crew not friendly END

The last of the three lines appeared to be written then later crossed out, for reasons unknown.
Upon reading the contents of the note, I was instantly reminded of Lynn’s reaction upon learning of Igor’s background. I suppose this was expected...
Also, it turned out Igor could actually communicate outside of using just yes and no, surprisingly.
Speaking of surprises, I couldn’t help but wonder what the last line could be that caused it to be crossed out.
I took another close look at the note, curious about the line that was crossed out. To make out the original text, I raised the note to face one of the ceiling lights, revealing the imprint of the letters written under the crossed-out section.

Fucking cunts END

“Huh.”
Apparently Igor could emote as well, though I’m not too sure what to make of it. Hopefully, he’s not the type to hold grudges...

“Status report on the diplomatic mission,” Isao demanded in his clear, serious voice.
Oh dear, where do I begin...
“Lieutenant Lynn was greatly impressed by what the ship had to offer,” I explained nervously, trying to find a more roundabout way to deliver the blunder that had unfolded. “However, we ran into some, um, setbacks while visiting the officer’s lounge...”
The man frowned, his lone eye narrowed as dissatisfaction over my account surfaced over his face.
“Get to the point.”

“She got into some... physical altercation with Denisov-san. As a result, both of them were brought to the sickbay.”
The cyclops simply maintained his frown as he took in the information.
“The ship medic said there was no cause of serious concern.”

“Anything else?”
“I will check on the status of the two at 0700 tomorrow morning. That is all for now.”
Isao pinched the bridge of his nose as I finished as if he’s enduring a sudden migraine.
“You’re dismissed.” He stated after a short moment of silence. While the response was hard from harsh, the statement was effectively an order, which would imply that he’s placing himself as my superior. A tinge of annoyance boiled up within my mind, but I figured it would be best to swallow my pride for now. After all, there were many more important duties at hand than making a scene.
>>
I left the bridge without another word, heading straight for the Captain’s Quarters. Now that there was spare time, I could spend the rest of the day deciphering the contents of the microfilm.

The line of katakana on the top of the page was supposed to be translated to the corresponding numbers in the Iroha. If I could single out those numbers in the main text on the page, I may be able to figure out what information was hidden behind this cipher.

I returned to the Captain’s quarters and immediately locked the door behind me. I’m not leaving the opportunity for anyone to barge this time, intentionally or not. Having made sure everything was secured, I retreated into the study and began to work.
I laid out the film onto the reader again, writing down the kanas on the header following the “None” and transcribed them into numbers. Once complete, I started to scan through the rest of the page, crossing out the numbers that littered the page that corresponded to the ones on the header.

The filtering process went by at a snail’s pace, but after a good while of a diligent eyesore I have managed to pluck out all the numbers corresponding to the kanas on the header. Now, if I could transcribe the remaining numbers into their corresponding kanas-

*Tiiing!*
The noise from the intercom yanked me out of my concentration, as I immediately turned to the speaker's mouthpiece on the work desk to receive the call.

“Subaru, you busy in there?”
“Yanagi? What are you doing here?”
My friend’s voice caught me by surprise, as my hand flicked off the light for the microfilm reader. Why would she visit me all of a sudden?
“I’m off duty now. What, I can’t pay you a friendly visit?”
Her words reminded me that I did indeed meet her earlier while she was on her way to the showers.

“Give me a second,” I said as I shoved my notes away into the drawers of the desk and covered the reader with the blanket. With everything related to the microfilm swiped out of sight, I stepped out of the study, locked the door behind me, then headed towards the entrance of the Captain’s Quarters.
“Yes?”
Behind the door stood a refreshed-looking Yanagi, who greeted me with a faint smile. The dampness of her light green hair and the dim scent of shampoo in the air denoted the shower she had taken not long ago.

“How are you feeling?” She asked, her soft and caring tone reminiscent of a concerned older sister, not unlike the two previous times she had come to visit.
It became immediately clear that she was making sure I wasn’t getting bogged down in grief- the notion by itself was enough to warm my heart.
“Much better, thanks to you.” I returned her care and concern with a compliment of my own. Yanagi’s cheeks took on a light shade of pink, her smile widened a bit as she continued with a different topic.

“So how did the tour go?”
“Some freak accident happened along the way, so we had to cut the tour short. Thankfully, everyone is ok.”
“I see…”
As I elaborated the incident in detail, I noticed Yanagi sneaking little peeks to the right as she listened, as if there was something distracting her, or that there’s something she wanted to get out of her system.
Did I go on for a bit too long?

“Yanagi, it’s alright, you don’t really need to force yourself to talk to me just for the sake of talking. Don’t worry, I’m doing much better now.”

“Eh? N- no! That’s not what I mean-”

“It’s fine, Yanagi. I’ll take it from here.”
>>
A familiar but highly alarming voice came from the shadows around the corner to our right. Yanagi’s smile faded as her face flushed pale with worry. As for me, I felt my heart pumping fast as adrenaline spiked as if I was dropped back onto the frontlines.

With footsteps silent like a cat, Satoru Aono stepped out of the shadows, his spectacled, blank visage contrasted heavily against the brightly lit corridor. This was the first time we met face to face since that incident, and I could already feel a maelstrom brewing within the most primitive part of my psyche.

“What do you want?”
“To settle things.” He muttered softly, yet just as serious as his facial expression conveyed.
Perhaps back the day I would have crossed my arms and allowed him to speak his mind, be that an apology or defense. However, right now, no such compassion was present in my heart
“Unless you came asking permission to commit seppuku, go away.”

He blinked, seemingly caught off guard by my response.
“I didn’t know you were in the mood for a joke.”

My eyes narrowed into a sharp, hateful glare.
“Ah, so it wasn’t a joke.” He remarked wistfully and resumed his poker face.
"Look, I’m sorry about... what happened to Tewi.”

“Is that your apology?” I questioned, giving him the cold shoulder. The way he delivered the words certainly did not feel like one.
“That was the only option we had.” He answered, eyes drifting away from contact. “You know that too, don’t you?”
“Excuse me?” My repressed, simmering anger translated itself into a bloodshot glare. Even if there were no physical altercations between the two of us, the mere words he meant as an explanation had the same effect as a blow to my gut- sickening, to say the least.

“Satoru!”
Sensing the powder keg about to blow, Yanagi stepped in and pulled him aside.
“What are you doing? Weren’t you here to apologize?”
He paid no attention to her words, instead softly shoved her aside.

“As I said, that was the only option we had.” Satoru continued justifying his actions. “We steered clear of a future hostage situation, got out before our enemy could encircle us, and took out the Beiyang Admiral’s notorious bloodhound.”

I found my hand instinctively grabbing tightly onto his collar. The civilized part of my mind acted like a temporary shunt, holding back against a brooding bloodlust. I don’t see it lasting too long.
“Say that again, Satoru. Give me a reason to pummel that face into the ground.”
“Am I wrong then?” He held fast and stated bluntly, despite the venomous threats. “Do you KNOW what they’ll do to her!?”

He raised his voice towards the end, nearly choking on his words as my hand pulled tighter on his shirt.
“What I did back there…” He continued between breaths. “Was an act of mercy.”
Finally, he lets out a deep breath, seemingly relieved to have those thoughts expelled from his system.

My reasoning is if he truly intended it as an act of mercy he would've opened with that. Sounds like he's trying to justify this to himself.
Also it seems like he wants to provoke us into beating him up. My only theory is that he thinks if he gets his ass kicked it'd somehow clear his conscience.

We'll put him in the first suicide torpedo we construct.

Or he thinks getting Subaru to beat him up is the only way to correctly 'atone' for what he did. Remember, they were still best buds before the incident.

My guess will be that he's going to be our Gusurg/Faldio for the quest.

In spite of the irresistible urge to cave his face in, I could feel at the back of my head that something was off. I’ve known this man long enough to be certain that he was not the type to simply provoke and start trouble- not without good reason.

“You’re trying to make me hit you, aren’t you?” I whispered through gritted teeth. If that’s what he’s planning, I’m not giving him that gratification.
Instead of throwing a punch, I let go of his collar and shoved him to the ground.

“Come up with as many justifications as you want, I don’t care. Now fuck off.”
A moment of silence ensued as I retreated behind the door while he sat on the ground with a blank stare.
“...”
At last, Satoru pulled himself off the ground, dusted his behind and turned around to leave, not forgetting to shoot me one final glance before departure. I promptly ignored the gesture.

“Subaru...” As soon as Satoru left the scene, Yanagi once again rushed to my side while calling my name.
“H-how are you... feeling?”
Taking a step forth, Yanagi reached her hand at mine, her eyes filled with the same kind of concern she displayed when I shut myself in.
My mind was too overwhelmed by emotions to properly answer that question. One thing, however, was certain- I did not want to burden her any longer with my own issues.

“I need some time to sort out my thoughts...alone.” I replied as I took a step back to bring some distance between the two of us, turning down any offer for the attention she may suggest before it was brought up.

“O--okay…” My friend recoiled and her glance lowered, with a touch of panic in her voice. “Please, take care...”
Despite bidding me farewell, Yanagi remained standing right before me, gazing at me melancholically with her watery green eyes even as I slowly began closing the door.

I bumped my forehead and against the shut door, making a soft but audible “Tok” noise that echoed through the empty chamber. I had wanted to rid Yanagi of her concerns for me, yet by the look on her face I did anything but that.
As much as it pained me to leave her in tears, I had to overcome these inner demons by myself. This is my war, and my duty to carry on.

I returned to the study, planning to put my mind off the encounter by getting back to work. I booted up the reader once more to resume cracking the cipher before the unexpected, only to soon realize even that was a futile effort.
I found myself unable to focus on doing even the most basic task of crossing out numbers, with the scene of the encounter looping time and time again in my head.
A stuffed, claustrophobic restlessness boiled under my lungs, disrupting my focus. It was not from the wound on my sternum but from Satoru’s words…

“You know that too, don’t you?”

I took a deep breath and tried to forget what just happened, yet the restlessness only worsened as time went on. The repressed negative emotions manifested themselves like an anvil, weighing heavily on my chest as they boggled my mind like a pool of tar.

I need to do something to take my mind off… perhaps a shower would do.

I left the study for the bathroom, situated right next to the bedroom. The bathroom of the Captain’s Quarters had a rather luxurious layout, fitted with a fine layer of marble finish on the walls and floor. A massive 1 meter by 2-meter bathtub of the same material was situated in the center, while a separate shower stand occupied a corner next to it.

Upon closer examination, I realized the bath also came equipped with the different options of “water” to use. Aside from the standard cold and hot, there was also an additional faucet labeled with “Ragna”.

“Each spring is unique in its own way. However, only in Zipang’s isles could you find naturally-occurring Ragna springs.”

...Father.

I was suddenly reminded of the parent who always found beauty in such mundane things. Even though our relationship had drifted apart ever since mother passed away, I still found myself wishing he was still around…

I lifted my attention away from the marbled tub, and towards the shower stand to its side.
While the shower stand was by no means claustrophobic, the sheer vastness of the bath made it look rather small in comparison.

In no mood for a leisurely bath, I stepped right into the shower stand and unbound my hair.
Turning the faucet, a great stream of heated water immediately started pouring out of the showerhead and onto me, as thick steam began coating my surroundings.
I felt the warmth of the water hitting the top of my head, drenching my hair as it flowed down its length, to my neck, shoulders, then finally onto my back.
As I ran my finger over my soaked hair, I was reminded of why I kept it this way.

“Now, now, Subaru, be a good dear and sit still! Let mommy wash your hair for you, alright?”

With both palms on my temples, I gently massaged my head with my fingers, applying pressure evenly on my scalp while brushing my hair backward. Bubbles of foam began accumulating over my scalps, and a nostalgic lullaby within my childhood memories resurfaced in my mind. Soon enough, I found myself humming to the tune, a surge of nostalgia and yearning began filling my heart.

...Mother.

The steaming water flushed away the residual bubbles that accumulated on my hair, and I began working on scrubbing the rest of my body.

“How’d you like it? I did damn fine work, didn’t I?”

...Tewi.

My eyes closed, the deep reminiscence brought forth a small stream of tears from the edge of my eyes. They were quickly washed away by the torrent of hot water from above, just as fast as they formed.

I was merely taking a shower, yet memories of our family trips and the precious joyful moments we shared just won’t stop resurfacing in my mind. Like overflowing floodwater from a monsoon, I was finally overwhelmed by the emotions brought upon by the memories.
Leaning against the wall, I broke into an uncontrollable sob, as one thought kept echoing within my head...
“I’m the only one left...”
>>
Once I had regained enough composure to remove myself from the shower stand, I quickly grabbed a towel to dry my body and my face.
As it turned out, the shower did not help at all- in fact, I felt arguably worse. I was once again plagued by my depressing thoughts and remained only one step away from breaking into a sobbing mess.
I need to find another outlet before I become consumed by grief once again...

How exactly well armed are the Gallians in this scenario? We know they dunked naval mines all over the place but how modernized are their navy?

Considering that aviation in VC is relatively new, we probably won't have to worry much about Aircraft Carriers.

I headed straight for the wooden cabinet, searching for the strong spirit in Captain Suwabe’s private reserve. The potent liquor definitely has the kick to knock me out, hopefully drowning out my sorrow in the process. I reached for the glass and began pouring, then downed the drink in one go when the glass reached a third full.

The dark amber liquid left a sting at the back of my throat, then warmth as it settled in my stomach. I took a deep breath as the sting dissipated, then stared mindlessly around the empty room.

The silence and desolation of this space weighed heavily on my chest like an anvil, and the drink I just downed did nothing to fill this void.
The longer I stayed in the spot, the more I felt like I couldn’t bring myself to do anything.
“Just give up.” I heard a voice repeat in the back of my head, as the urge to surrender and shut myself in to wallow in self-pity grow stronger and stronger.
...
I have to get out of this place.

With the bottle of spirit in hand, I crashed out of the Captain’s quarters and stumbled aimlessly onto the corridor.
Where could I possibly go? I went through the options in my head.
Any of the commons would be a poor choice, lest unfamiliar crew members witness my pitiful state. I could go to the engine core, but I doubt drinking in the cramped seclusion of the core would be any different from doing so in the Captain’s quarters.
There must be somewhere more spacious, yet could still maintain some privacy...
That was when the officers’ lounge popped into mind.
The lounge was spacious, better lit, and I wouldn’t have to worry about running into strangers and have my general opinion lowered any further.

Making up my mind, I went down the stairs and headed straight for the lounge, carefully treading around the corners to make sure I would not run into anyone.
Soon enough, I found myself back at the scene of the ruckus, right in the middle of the officer’s lounge. The lights were considerably dimmed compared to my previous visit, which brought my attention to the clock on the wall to finally notice the time of day.
It was five past 10, later than most of the crew who would occupy this lounge would stay awake- meaning I would be having this entire space to myself.
I took out a glass from the cabinet and sat at one of the armchairs facing the entrance.
Once again taking hold of the bottle of spirit, I filled the glass to about half full this time, then downed the strong, stimulating alcohol in its entirety once more.

“Ack..”

I winced with a discomforted cough as the liquid settled in my stomach, bringing forth a wave of nausea that made me instinctively bend forward. I stared into the empty glass, into my distorted, kaleidoscopic reflection.

Why am I doing this?

I kept asking myself the same question, yet every single time the answer felt more elusive than the previous. Perhaps I should just-

“Oi, what do you think you’re doing?”
I lifted my head to be met by Hibari’s disapproving glare.
“Really now, you’re drinking in public?” Hibari snarked with her hands crossed before her chest.
However, I felt too lethargic to even formulate any sort of response. With my free hand, I reached for the bottle, intending to ignore the petite pilot and refill another drink.
Yet, I found myself grabbing nothing but a handful of air.

With the swiftness of a diving falcon, Hibari snatched the bottle away and held it far out of my reach.
“This isn’t going to solve any of your problems.”
She shook her head disapprovingly with a pitiful sigh before her expression softened as she continued.
“Look, I know it’s hard, but-”

Out of nowhere, a wave of anger materialized within my mind and quickly boiled over.

“WHAT DO YOU KNOW!?”

In a clear, crisp “clank”, the glass I was holding shattered into a million pieces on the floor, accompanied by my thunderous holler that reverberated through the empty lounge like the sound of a battering war drum.
However, Hibari was not startled in the slightest by the unceremonious outburst.

“You done?”
Her stone-cold gaze carved into my soul with scrutiny, releasing a torrent of shame as I remembered who I was speaking to. Embarrassed to glance upon Hibari directly, I slumped back on the seat and buried my head in my hands.

“Got that off your chest, hm?”
I heard her sigh, followed closely by the sound of a cushion compressing under the newly applied weight.
I looked up tiredly and found Hibari sitting in the armchair next to me, her calm and collected disposition contrary to her usual fiery self. Following an audible ‘clank’, she set the liquor back on the stand between the two chairs.

“I know you’re going through a lot.” Hibari began, her voice soft and gentle, like a teacher addressing a troubled youngling. “I can see it in your eyes.”

Hibari’s words, assuring it may be, also carried a tinge of sorrow, as if she understood what I was going through from experience. As such, I felt much more at ease in opening up to her.

“... How did you deal with it?”
“I’m… not too sure either.”
She lowered her gaze, accompanied by a moment of silence. Even without words, I could see in her eyes the reminiscence, the sorrow, the pain she buried within.

“Oh…”
I felt myself deflate a little from the lack of immediate remedy to my woes. Yet at the same time, glad of the newfound camaraderie I found within her.

“But I do know it gets worse if you try to contain it alone and let it fester inside you” Hibari resumed, raising the bottle of liquor.
“And this? This will only bring you more troubles than answers.”

I gave her two weak nods in acknowledgment. With her company, I felt much more at ease than when I first set foot in the lounge.
