/qst/ - Quests

Welcome to the world of Pokémon! You play as Cerulia Wisteria, an amnesiac dratini who swears she was once human. In the two days that you have existed in this world you have: made friends with a lizard, learned some fabulous powers from getting uncomfortably close to a girl with a bowl cut, maybe made a psychic pig mad (Possibly? You’re not entirely sure how that went down…), learned to roll before you could walk, DEFINITELY made a monkey pig mad, met a raccoon in a tree, then helped that raccoon kill a giant snake that was hoarding an even bigger pile of berries.

Anything else? Oh yeah, the world is being corrupted by what appears to be a massive, eldritch bubble dubbed, ‘The Glimmer’. You don’t know much about that yet though, which isn’t good considering your status as a ‘gleamer’ means some people think you’re responsible for it! Don’t let that get you down though. Scritts swears everyone’s gonna call you a hero for helping take down a monstrous serpent and bringing home enough food to feed the village for weeks! He wouldn’t lie, right?

“…Alright. Gonna need to make quite a few trips it seems,” you hear Scritts talking mostly to himself as he appraises the berry hoard.

“We’d need the whole town if we wanted to carry all this back in one trip,” Gib muses idly to himself.

“Heheheh, that we would, wouldn’t we?”

The two of them prattle on about the logistics of carrying all the berries back to Tickseed, yet you’re finding it difficult to focus on that as you examine the corpses of the recently slain ‘Arbok’ and the mangled creature it had been feasting on before. Scritts was right. This thing was obviously a monster, capable of eating the three of you alive if it wanted to. It needed to be put down.

So why do you feel so empty all of a sudden?

“Is… everything alright over there?” you hear Gib call out to you.

>”I’m not really sure…”
>”I’m fine. Don’t worry about it”
>”No, I’m not fine. We all could’ve died”

“Ah no, we’re not doing this. Sorry,” Scritts waddles on up to the conversation.

“Look, uh, Cerulia,” He fumbles over your name before looking you dead in the eyes.

“I don’t wanna hear any of that ‘I’m a killer, woe betide!’ crap. You ain’t a killer, you know what you are? A savior,” He grins at that last word before looking down at the dead Arbok.

“You know what me an’ Gib woulda been if you weren’t here?”

“I don’t—”

“Food. That’s what.”

“He’s right,” Gib steps in.

“Without your healing and defensive abilities, neither of us have survived this fight. Take pride in that, Lia.”

“I’m just glad the both of you are ok. Is it always like this? A fight for survival?” You ask.

“We don’t usually go around fighting arboks, but… yeah. Every day is a struggle,” Gib replies.

“Then I don’t have time to mope around, do I?” You look at the two of them with renewed vigor.

“Let’s get these berries to Tickseed before nightfall,” you say.

“That’s more like it! Matter o’ fact I’m just about to head back to town and gather a scavenging party or four for this *treasure trove*.” Scritts says with relish, “don’t forget to grab as much of whatever you want from the pile now, cause it’s all goin’ straight into storage by the end of the day.”

“Er, I don’t really know what’s good to pick…”

“Man, that amnesia is something else. You don’t even know what berries are good?” Scritts looks aghast.

“If you’d like, I can pick for you. Trust me, I know which are the most valuable,” Gib offers.

You scoff at Gib’s suggestion, “I’ll have you know my nose has never led me wrong when it comes to food.”

“...You know what? I’m 100% willing to believe that,” he makes a noncommittal gesture towards the pile, “go nuts.”

You slither your way over to the hoard of brightly colored treats, close your eyes and breathe it all in.

“…Hmm…”

Your eyes snap open.

*There*

You burrow into the sweet-smelling mountain with uncharacteristic grace, find your target, and immediately fly right out with such surgical precision the berry pile looks as undisturbed as it was before you dived in.

Scritts is speechless at this display, eyes wide and mouth open in a picture perfect representation of the word ‘awe’.

Even Gib is a bit taken aback at the fluidity of your actions.

“LOO WHA AH FOUN!” You drop the berry at Gib’s feet, “This one! This is a good one!”

It’s tear drop shaped and gray with large white swirls reminiscent of question marks. Gib picks it up and examines it.

“The heck is this?” he says turning it over in his hand, “Never seen a berry like this in my life.”

“Hold on, I’m pretty sure there’s some more in there actually,”

Before he has a chance to reply you dive right in with wild abandon. Unfortunately though, you can’t quite track the same scent. You’re not that worried about it though, you’ve got plenty more to pick from after all! You continue to swim through the berry pile, storing anything you deem sufficiently savory inside the ample pockets of your cheeks. When you’ve had your fill you dive out and promptly spit out the berries at Gib’s feet before burrowing right back in anew. You do this quite a few times until you’re satisfied.

“Dang, you don’t even know ‘em and you still know what to pick! If fighting’s not your bag, then you’ve got a real future in foraging, kid,” Scritts comments.

Gib takes inventory of your stock, undeterred by the sheen of saliva covering your precious property, “let’s see: five Starfs, six Lansats, four Salacs, seven Rawsts, four Aspears, ten Pechas and ten Chestos; nine Cheris, twelve Sitrus, and finally three Watmels, quite the haul to say the least.” He looks down at the mystery berry once more, “Shame there weren’t any more of these though…Don't often come across a berry I’ve never seen before.”

“Bet Schiff knows about it,” says Scritts.

“I’d rather not deal with Schiff if I don’t have to.” Gib replies with a glare.

"She's not...that.. bad, Gib," Scritts replies unsurely.

>”Who’s Schiff?”
>”We all good now, ready to head out?”

”Who’s Schiff? Also, what can you tell me about these berries? I only know they smell good.”

“Schiff’s a berry brewer. She mixes berries and makes healing salves and whatnot. Real good at it, but she ain’t all that… easy to deal with,” answers Scritts.

Gib just grunts in response.

“What’s her issue?” You ask.

“Her issue is that she hates anyone not shroud aligned.”

“Hey, hate’s a… strong word, Gib. And besides, she… has her reasons…” says Scritts

“Whatever, you wanted to know about the berries right? Here, I’ll summarize: Starfs make you tougher, eat one and you’ll be taking hits that could kill you before. Lasts about a day. Lansats make you stronger, eat one and you’ll be punching holes in things you never thought possible. Also lasts about a day. Salacs make you quicker, again for a about a day. Rawsts are great for burns. Aspears are for keeping warm. Pechas are good for illnesses as well as poison. Chestos help keep you awake if your tired. Cheris are good if you get paralyzed. Sitrus are very good at healing wounds as well as staunching bleeding. Finally Watmels don’t do anything on their own but are considered a very rare delicacy and worth quite a bit in trades. That about covers it I think,” Gib rattles off clearly wishing to steer the conversation away from this ‘Schiff’ person.

“Got all that?”

“I… guess,” you reply.

“Good, well I’ve already packed my bag with the essentials. You gonna take it from here, Scritts?”

“Yep, you go on ahead of me, I gotta figure out a way to keep this place hidden from ‘inquisitive souls’ before I make my way back to base.”

“Got it, you’ll be the first thing I’ll tell chief Roh about in my report.”

“Haha… yeah I’m sure he’ll be just thrilled to help me,” Scritts notes dryly.

“Lia, you coming?” Gib asks.

>”You think I can try telepathy to communicate with chief Roh? I mean, I am psychic apparently. It could make things quicker, and I promise not to make a fool of myself like last time”
>”What exactly is 'shroud aligned'?"

This is gonna have to be it for me tonight fellas. I don't know when I'll be able to update tomorrow or even if I'll be able to at all. Corona's made things very difficult at my workplace. Still, I'm happy to be back writing this again, and it's nice to see quite a few people actually remembering this thing.

Anyways, hopefully next update will be a little more action packed than this one. Again, as always, if you have any feedback, criticism, complaints, I'm all ears. Take it easy guys.

”Yeah, I’m ready to go. I’ve seen enough of this place to last a lifetime.”

“Alright, let’s get a move on then,” Gib gives one final nod to Scritts before making his way to the only exit out of this snake den.

“Bye, Scritts. Keep safe, ok?” You call out as you turn to follow him.

“I will, kid. Make sure you keep ‘golden boy’ on the straight and narrow for me, will ya?”

“I’m probably not the right person to ask that, but I’ll try,” you say with a bit of self-deprecation.

“Nah, you gotta good heart. Now go on, get outta here already,” he says playfully.

You smile and give a little wave with you tail before turning around to catch up with Gib who’s waiting at the entrance.

“Guess we should hurry back to Tickseed, huh?” you ask.

“Mmhm, the quicker the better.”

The two of you head out back into the forest area. It’s a little lighter outside now, you can see sunlight poking through the dense foliage above. Looks like it’s around midday by your estimation. You look around to see if your battle with the arbok attracted any curious onlookers, but it’s still just as eerily quiet as before. If Gib’s at all bothered by this he doesn’t show it, he moves forward at a brisk pace, stopping a bit every once and while so you can catch up.

“Sorry, still not used to moving in this body,” you say.

“It’s fine, I’ll try to slow my pace a little so you can keep up.”

“Wow, somebody’s cocky. Did you forget the person responsible for keeping you and Scritts alive?”

He laughs at this a little, “No, I didn’t. You really came through for us,” his tone changes and he gives a little smirk, “You might even be able actually damage the next mankey you see.”

“Hey! I knocked that first one out of a tree. I clearly softened him up for you!”

“Oh yeah, clearly,” he then pauses a little like he’s considering something, “Though, I am starting to wonder what exactly your alignment is… Neutral maybe?”

“My what?”

“You’ve forgotten that too, huh?” He gives an apologetic look.

“Yeah, I have no idea what an alignment is. I remember you saying something about ‘shroud alignment’ with Scritts earlier, but that’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

“Hmm, everyone has an alignment, some even have two. It’s the way the breath of the world chooses to manifest itself through us.”

“I see, so uh… what does that mean exactly?”

He lets out a little sigh, “Basically, everyone has some sort of elemental affinity, like fire, or water, or nature in my case.”

“Huh, so that’s why your green, huh? I take it you don’t like fire?”

“Now you’re catching on. Every affinity has its strengths and weaknesses. I’m weak to fire, but water attacks aren’t very effective on me.”

“Ok, I think I’m getting it. What’s shroud alignment?”

“It’s the alignment that allows one to go through the glimmer unharmed.”

“Whoa… so the reason that, uh… poochyena could—”

“Yep. Scritts is shroud aligned as well. That arbok was too, somehow,” he frowns at that last statement.

“So how many alignments are th—”

“HEY PUNKS!!!” A loud voice rings out as a figure descends from the trees.

“[REFLECT]!” You scream.

Gib promptly shimmers with protective energy.

“[INCINERATE]!”

A gout of flame erupts from the interloper’s mouth. Gib’s eyes widen in shock, but he just barely manages to leap aside from the attack without so much as a singe. The mankey is not so fortunate.

EEERAAAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!” the ape shrieks in pain and horror as its fur combusts on contact.

The new foe, a different, red colored monkey, looks on in horror.

GOMA!!” He cries out.

He rushes to his friend’s aid but is immediately knocked into the ground by a green blur with enough force to kick up a dirt trail behind where he lands. Gib phases back from his [QUICK ATTACK] and approaches the fallen red monkey. The currently smoldering mankey is no longer screaming, its body is still.

“Well, that’s one down, only one more to go hmm?” Gib states glibly.

His fist glows with energy as he prepares to finish off the red monkey.

His body stiffens. His expression wild eyed, pupils shrunken to pinpricks.

“It’s…it’s fine. Everything’s fine,” you try to be reassuring.

You interrupt his stammering by giving him a gentle flick to the snout. He’s taken aback, but before he can say anything you press your tail up to his lips.

“Just relax, dummy. I trust you to do the right thing,” you say as you begin to unfurl from him.

He’s dumbfounded, but he quickly shakes his head in an attempt to collect himself.

“R-right. Thank you.”

You nod at him and then assess the situation. The fire monkey is out cold, still breathing but not getting up any time soon.

“…He’ll be alright,” says Gib, sounding somewhat guilty.

You then turn your attention to the mankey, its wounds more severe. Much of its fur has been burnt off, revealing severely scorched flesh. Now knowing Gib’s alignment, you shudder to think what would’ve happened had he been hit by this.

The mankey isn’t breathing.

You breathe in and focus all your energy on the seared mankey.

“[HEAL PULSE]!”

You close your eyes as pink and yellow ribbons of psychic energy pour out from your mind, painting the mankey in golden hues.

“Mmm…” You grit your teeth. Normally when healing someone you can actually feel your energy knitting their wounds and restoring their vitality. You don’t get that sensation this time.

“Urgh… C’mon…” You expend more of your stamina. The light enveloping the mankey brightens considerably, but it still feels like your energy is going nowhere.

“Lia…” Gib approaches you.

“It’s fine, Gib. I’ve got this,” you say, although you’re beginning to feel short of breath.

“Lia, I… he took a direct hit while severely weakened. I don’t think he’s…” He trails off, not saying what you’re both thinking.

Just… a little… more…” You strain out a response, “…Erraagh…”

The light surrounding the mankey dissipates.

You’re out of stamina.

“…I’m sorry, Lia. You tried,” Gib places a hand on your back in an attempt at reassurance. You wish you still had shoulders.

“Haaaah…” You sigh long and hard, “…can we at least… leave a berry or something for the red one? Like as a show of good will?”

Gib wordlessly pulls out a few oran berries from his rucksack and places them near the still living monkey.

“This was just so… stupid,” you say in a bitter tone, “We could’ve settled this without anybody dying, but no…”

Gib wears an uncomfortable look on his face. He scratches the back of his head and searches for something to stare at while you stew in growing resentment of the violence apparently required in this world.

“We… should probably start heading back to Tickseed now. There’s a lot of things to report.”
“Yeah, alright,” you reply.
The two of you head back to the path you were traveling on before.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest of the trip was made in relative silence. You feel that odd tingling sensation as you pass through Tickseed’s Barrier and reach the laughably ramshackle excuse for a front gate. Gib gives a brief nod at the gray, muscle-bound creature on guard, Seg, you think, who gives a lazy salute in response.

“I’m gonna go on ahead and speak with the chief,” Gib says.

>“Alright, mind if I join you? Don’t worry, I’m not in the mood to make a fool of myself again.”

>“Alright, mind if I join you? Don’t worry, I’m not in the mood to make a fool of myself again.”

“Ok,” Gib agrees with surprising ease. He’s obviously still feeling guilty over what happened earlier.

The two of you make your way up the winding, dirt road towards the most ostentatious building in town. Along the way you continue to notice all the stares you’re receiving, which just makes your already sour mood worsen.

“mmm…” you mumble to yourself in irritation at being gawked at.

Gib picks up on this and makes a point to glare at anyone who looks to be a problem, at one point even going so far as to [LEER] at a particularly nosy weasel like creature.

“Don’t worry about them, Lia. Don’t you pay them any mind,” He says.

“Yeah…”

Finally you pass the town square, Dhara still resting in the center, and make your way up the surprisingly well-maintained steps to Chief Roh’s lodge. As you head towards the entrance you notice a new person is guarding the entry way.

“Heya, Gib. Man, you and your buddy look beat,” says the mouse creature with the jagged tail.

“Oh it’s been quite the day,” replies Gib with a sigh, “is the chief in, Pace?”

“Yep, just came back from some business or… something, I dunno. Need to see him?”

“mmhm”

“Right this way then,” Pace moves aside as the two of you walk in.

Inside you see chief Roh balanced on his tail just like last time, eyes closed in what you assume is telepathic communication.

“Gibosh,” he states in that detached, naturally commanding tone.

“S-sir?” Gib replies shakily, interrupted mid bow.

“You and your friend have something important to tell me, don’t you?”

Sir, during standard sweep of the recovered western area we encountered Scritts on foraging duty.

“Hmm..” Roh murmurs. Is it just your imagine or did his expression darken for a moment?

“Scritts informed of us a large supply of berries he had discovered in what he believed to be a recently abandoned ekans den,” Gib continues.

“I trust this den was found in neutral area,” Roh interjects.

“Y-yes sir. It seems what we dealt with was a rogue marauder of sorts.”

Roh quirks a brow, “How was this marauder dealt with?

“Well sir, that’s where things become… complicated.”

Roh leans forward ever so slightly, expression as inscrutable as ever, “How so?”

“The ekans… turned out to be an arbok… an arbok aligned with shroud.”

Roh’s eyes narrow ever so slightly as his body begins to shimmer with blue telepathic energy. You begin to feel a prodding sensation inside your skull. You let out a slight gasp. It’s not painful, but the sudden intrusion without warning does come as a shock. You glance over to Gib. He’s wincing slightly. The sensation becomes stronger, in fact it’s starting to feel painful. You’re about to say something, but just before you do so the feeling vanishes.

“So I see…” Roh intones.

You feel like asking why this little interrogation is necessary if he’s just going to read your minds, but before you’re able to Roh suddenly speaks up.

“It would have been best for you to come report to me before setting off on an acquisitions operation. Still, I’m glad the three of you were able to make it out of the situation unharmed. I will direct the foragers currently stationed in town to Scritts’ location. Now then, is there anything else that requires my attention?”

[Con't]
>>
>>4391861
“We… also had a skirmish with the Mankey on the way back to town,” answer Gib.

“So I saw.”

Roh flicks his eyes toward you for the first time in the conversation. As your eyes meet you feel that sensation again.

“Ah…” you can’t help but let out another gasp.

It feels like your… inner eye is being forced open and something is being… implanted. In your mind you are shown the battle with the monkey duo again. You see yourself conjuring what looks like [REFELCT] on Gib, only this time instead of dodging, he takes the fireball head on and emerges completely unharmed.

[LIGHT SCREEN] you feel a deep bass voice rumble. The vision ends.

Roh is staring at you with a genuine smile on his face.

“That should allow you to protect your allies a little more holistically, Miss Cerulia.”

“Th-thank you, sir,” you do a little bow. It disturbs you slightly how he doesn’t even bother to bring up the mankey’s death.

“I wish to thank the two of you for bringing all this to my attention. Tickseed is in your debt,” he closes his eyes and ever so slightly bows his head in thanks.

“Oh, th-there’s no need to thank us sir. We’re only doing our proper service for the town,” Gib fervently bows in response.

Roh gives a hearty chuckle, “well I’d say you and Cerulia have gone above and beyond ‘proper service’. Scritts as well. Now then, why don’t you tell me what you’re really here for, Gibosh?”

Gib stands up straight and crosses his arm over his chest, fire in eyes, “Sir, permission to aid in reconnaissance and acquisitions in the Glimmer, sir!”

“Hmm… Permission granted.”

Your heart nearly stops. You look to Gib, then to Roh.

“WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?” You shriek.

Specially how you write the character interactions, they feel genuine.

Maybe we should consider drawing a rough estimate of what a human looks like and ask around if anyone has ever seen anything like it before.
>>
>>4391870
This quest just caught my eye and I binged the archive and I demand more.
My feedback is that the character interactions an phenomenally fun so far. I actually crave more people to bounce Lias crass crazyness off of.

And yeah, it wouldn't have hurt to dial down on the lethality with the mankeys. Like comically singed instead of incinerated.

My suggestions to dial down the doom and gloom a bit:
Maybe something along the lines that the hoard we brought back will provide enough seeds to greatly improve food stability in Tickseed in the future.

We can start contributing to the barrier ourself to relieve the other psychics.

And as the ugly mud huts offend us we could lead the effort to pretty up the town.

Plus we can still have low stakes fights in the near future within the town for training or to tangle with people who hate our gleamer ass.

I love farming sims. We have all the Pokemon we need to start up our own berry plantation. We don't need to dig up canals or anything, just a couple of water types. Maybe some ground and grass types to dig, plant, and stimulate the growth of various plants with their powers. Then if we can secure a border around the designated farm land we can have a reliable source of food. Maybe after that we can start making things prettier.

Your outburst reverberates throughout the room, rattling the various trinkets and odds and ends scattered throughout Roh’s office. Pace pokes his head inside. Gib is absolutely scandalized.

“Suh—C-C-Ceruliaaaa!” His eye is doing that twitchy thing again. But before he can lay into you he’s interrupted by a full-throated laugh.

“Gibosh, my boy! Do consider Cerulia’s position. She’s only reacting out of concern for your well-being!”

“I…uh…S-sir!

“That’s right! Why in the world do you wanna go into the Glimmer?!” You stop and think for a second, “How in the world can you go into the Glimmer? I thought it was a death trap!”

“Ordinarily that is the case,” answers Roh, “But through the use of tools imbued with the properties of shroud, one is capable of traversing the Glimmer in relative safety.”

“So why doesn’t everyone have one of these ‘tools’, then?” You ask.

“Cause they’re difficult to acquire,” Gib replies, “You need something small and portable, preferably something you can wear, that’s receptive to shroud imbuement, as well as someone shroud aligned who’s willing to help in the process of imbuing,” He intakes a sharp breath, “At the risk of sounding bigoted, most shroud aligned aren’t interested in helping.

Your mind flashes back to the poochyena you scared off into the glimmer yesterday, ah but—

“What about Scritts? You said he was shroud aligned. Wouldn’t he help?”

[Con't]
>>

“He already has…” Gib reaches inside his rucksack and pulls out what looks like a black handkerchief and ties it around his neck like a bandana, “Scritts found this awhile back while scavenging. It was receptive to imbuement.”

“How proactive of you, Gibosh,” Roh states, his tone taking on the detached quality it had before.

“Sir! I apologize for not seeking your approval; I acted brashly, sir!”

“Mm…Be mindful of that brashness; cloth alone won’t keep you safe in the Glimmer.”

“Sir!”

“Ok…” You interject, “But, why? I mean even with that bandana, it’s still dangerous, right? Why take the risk?”

“Because I’m sick of hiding behind a Barrier. I want to know what’s causing the Glimmer. I want to know what took my home…” Gib stares at you with resolve.

Words fail you as you look into his eyes, it’s clear you won’t be able to talk him out of this.

Roh takes this opportunity to clear his throat, “Well, Gibosh. I had actually prepared something in advance for you for when I felt it was opportune. But since you’re already well-equipped…” He turns and looks to you, “…How about it?” He’s holding an intricately embroidered black and white scarf, “I saw how you kept him from doing something he’d regret, Cerulia. “O-ok,” you tentatively grasp the scarf with your tail.

‘I’m gonna need help putting this on…’ You think to yourself glumly.

Gib’s slack-jawed, eyes bulging, mouth open wide enough to cram a Watmel in and still leave space.

“I…Sir…I-I…”

“Yes, Gibosh? Is something the matter?” Roh replies, the barest hint of amusement creeping into his tone.

“Sir, I…I would never doubt your judgement, but… Cerulia is…” He trails off, fumbling desperately for the right word.

“Inexperienced?” Offers Roh.

“…I’m right here, you know,” you say as you roll your eyes in exasperation.

Gib briefly flicks his eyes to you before returning his attention to Roh. A dark green blush forming on his face.

“I…ahh…” He falters.

“Teach her.”

W-what!?” You both yell in stereo.

“How to fight, how to forage, how to survive. Under the proper tutelage I believe she’ll make a fine defender of our community.”

“Y-yes sir!”

I honestly don’t know all that much about this world; I definitely don’t think I’m ready to go and just tackle the Glimmer after what I’ve seen today…” You reflect on the day’s events. The arbok. The mankey. You suppress the urge to shudder.

“That’s ok,” answers Gib, “We’re in no rush. I want to make sure we’re as prepared as possible before we go into the Glimmer.”

“Prepared—Oh! I forgot, I wanted to ask about how to help with the Barrier, if… I’m capable,” you say.

“From what I’ve seen of your abilities, you should be well suited for it,” Roh answers, “Callisto, Io’s elder sister, has experience in tutoring young psychics. I’ll inform her of your interest,” his eyes close as that blue aura reappears.

“Now then, I have some urgent business to attend to, so I’m afraid this meeting will have to come to a close,” Roh nods his head slightly, “Thank you, once again, for your sterling service to our community,” he then swivels on his tail and returns to his meditation as Gib bows and promptly leads the two of you out.

“Well, I guess we’re… ‘Glimmer bound?’ Uh… what exactly do you call this status we’ve been given?” You wander aloud.

“Death seekers.”

“What!?”

Gib gives you a smirk, “I’m joking. Well, I… hope I’m joking. Anyways, we’ve got some time and we need to prepare so…”

“It’s been in the back of my mind since I found it,” you say.

“Oh, right, I forgot about that…” Gib sounds like he’d rather be discussing something else.

“So, yeah… Didn’t Scritts say someone called ‘Schiff’ could help with that?”

He lets out a small sigh, “C’mon, I’ll take you to her.”

The two of you step away from the center of town and head out towards the eastern outskirts. You walk together in silence before you pipe up, “So uh…I take it you’re not fond of Schiff.”

“She’s good at what she does, her skills would be of great use in this community,” his eyes narrow, “But she’d rather gouge people out of their hard-earned belongings before actually ‘helping’ anyone.”

“Hmm…” You decide not to continue this line of conversation and just quietly observe your surroundings before reaching your destination. Even for Tickseed, the eastern outskirts are in rough condition. Dilapidated dwellings dot the landscape, looking intentionally damaged instead of just hastily strewn together like the rest of the buildings you’ve seen in town. It’s also sparsely populated, you’ve passed by very few people on the road here.

“Alright… here we are,” Gib stops in front of one of the better maintained, but still shoddy, buildings. He knocks on the wall next to the entryway where a ragged drape is hanging, preventing you from peering inside.

“Schiff. We’re here to discuss business,” he states coolly.

You hear what sounds like someone making a hacking cough in a distant room. A few moments pass and you hear a scratchy voice call out, “business have you? My, aren’t we *important* sounding?”

Gib just sighs in irritation and says, “We need you to… ‘appraise’ a berry we found.”

There’s another pause, “Hmm, I would expect an esteemed forager to know how to ‘appraise’ a berry properly… You have compensation prepared, yes?”

“We’re just asking you to look at a berry, Schiff. That doesn’t require any compensation,” Gib says, temper beginning to flare.

“Hm! Waste my time then, you won’t. Goodbye,” You hear the figure move further back into her home.

“Darn Gib, guess we’ll just have to take this Watmel and leave, huh?” You say as you pretend to set off.

“Wait, a Watmel—” You hear a crash before a figure comes rushing out the entry way to meet you. It’s… a crow? A crow with a hat.

“What was this about ‘appraisal’, dearie?” Schiff says with grandmotherly sweetness.

You dig through your rucksack and pull out the odd, gray berry, “we’d like to know what this is, ma’am,” you say as respectfully as possible.

She gives the berry a scrutinizing look, “Hmm… White swirls on a gray body… Quite rare,” she looks to you with a serious expression, “known as Enigma berries, these are. Very valuable.”

“So… what do they do?” you ask.

“Enhancement. The effects are randomized. Can make you stronger or faster, may even have you learn a rare ability.”

“Huh,” Gib wonders aloud.

“Would it be possible to, I dunno, grow more of these?” You ask.

“No. Enigmas are unlike traditional berries. Can only grow in soil touched by the Glimmer. A recent phenomenon, they are.” Schiff answers.

“Can they be dangerous then?” You ask.

“Never known one to be. Suppose they could. Haven’t seen enough to say with certainty,” Schiff turns her attention to you, “If you’d like, I can brew something for you with this. Would love to study how it reacts…” her eyes take on a dreamy expression as she flicks her eyes back to the ‘Enigma’ berry.

“What would that do?” You ask.

“Could focus the effects. Mix with Salac for example, would make you faster almost certainly.”

“Any downsides?”

“Enhancement would be diluted. No chance of rare ability learned, either,” Schiff glances back to you, “Not all bad, though. Would have two portions to do as one pleases.”

“How much is this gonna cost?” Gib interjects.

“Free of charge, sap sucking one!” She looks to you with a sweet smile, “Interest is purely scientific. Would only need *one* other berry to react. Although, would be happy to accept any gratuities offered!” Her grin widens.

>Take up her offer [You guys can decide what berry you want to combine it with]
>”Would you really do this for free?”
>“Hmm, well thanks for the information, but I think I’ll hold onto it for now”
>“Huh, enhancement, huh?” Eat it right there.
>“Hey Gib, you wanna eat it?”
>Other

You don’t have to vote on a specific berry. You can just say, “I want to improve our Attack stat,” or something and I’ll count that as a vote

>>“Huh, enhancement, huh?” ask Gib what he thinks

go big or go home, after follow up questions

Ask if she would like to go with us in the Glimmer. Who knows, we might find more of the strange berries. if she has the time.

+1
Hmmmm
An ability ay would we have to roll for the chance of an rare ability?
>>
>>4398958
Yeah you'd roll for it
>>
I feel like if we eat it now there's a chance to get random buff and it'll just go to waste so we should wait till we enter the glimmer

Ugh, sorry guys. Work as been an absolute terror these last few days. Fortunately, I have tomorrow off, so I should be able to update then.

It's alright we all have those day's, thank you for the update though

So I've gotten some news that is going to have an unfortunate effect on this quest. I'm going to be moving departments very shortly in my current workplace, and will be required to pick up quite a few new skills for this new position. As such, It's looking increasingly unlikely I'm going to be able to continue this quest in the near future, and for that I apologize. However, once things have settled down and a relative groove has been established, I'd like to pick up where we left. I'm hoping that will be the case by, say, late September to early October. Again, I want to apologize for the inconvenience this causes, as well as thank anyone who's given this quest a glance. Hopefully I'll see some of you again come fall.

You got a twitter or something we can keep track of for when you start running again?
>>
>>4403453
No, I should probably get on that, shouldn't I? I'll post the handle here when I do so, as well as archive this thread when I get the chance.
>>
>>4403468
thanks man, looking forward to the day you run again, thanks for the fun.
>>
>>4403468
I really enjoyed the quest so far, so I’ll be here when you come back.
Take your time, my man, and thanks for the quest.
>>
>>4403468
Aaaw, that's too bad. Just when I found this gem.
Take your time. I'll probably be still here.
>>
Will anyone consider taking over the quest?
>>

I would rather wait for QM to comeback, he returned once, I think he will again
>>
Got the twitter set up finally, also archived the thread.

Here we go, I'm new to twitter so please bear with me. Anyways, I'll be posting there when it's time to update. Sorry again for putting you guys on hiatus, but I just don't see any other way to balance this with work. At any rate, I really do appreciate how patient everyone's been with me so far. Hope to see you guys soon!

I feel like I should address this. If I'm still radio silent by, let's say... late October, and if there's anyone who's actually interested in taking the reins, then... I'll allow it. I'd rather that not be the case since this is something that's been brewing in my head for awhile and I feel a certain sense of authorship towards it, but I recognize that I'm not the only contributor to this story and that you guys don't want to sit around waiting forever for a flaky QM. Anyways, sorry to ramble. Thanks everyone for reading!
