Alright lads, so this is how it's gonna work. I've grown fairly bit tired of jumping between different lifetimes, so this is going to be the last run. You die when you die and there's no coming back.

In return, the MC gets the skillsets of Arkan after he managed to navigate the many wars and the political landscape build a functioning technocracy on Stepstones.

Essentially, this means that Arthur now has not only has stupid high stats compared to rest of Planetos, but also has figured out to turn Frozen Fire (Obsidian), into a long lasting fuel source, air travel, basic electronics, easy to manufacture engines, welding and so on.

This effectively means you're set out to kickstart and industrial revolution on your lands and completely crap on any common conventions the world has, which I think is a fitting way to conclude this story, because once that's done there's not really a whole lot else to do.

Also, I'm abandoning the Green Ronin fiefdom system entirely in favor of freeform because it's really clunky and really not compatible what's going to happen.

Let's begin and I hope you have fun with this one.
Daily rations are not guaranteed, albeit aspired towards.

Reverberating throughout the concrete jungle, the megaphones carry the voice of the supreme leader across the island, reaching so far as to be heard by the fishermen who ply their trade diligently on the coast to augment the civilian winter supplies.

"...And with this new breakthrough in esoteric sciences my friends, we will free our proud and virtuous nation from all our previous energy restraints! We can now harness years worth of steam energy with the black gold of Valyrians that in their ignorance, they never saw the true potential of! The Dragonglass burns once more, but now with a new righteous purpose to serve the ambitions of our industrial people as we rise ever closer to the stars."

"Cost of coal shall drop sharply, allowing for it's application in other industries, be it in the state rubber plants, construction of roads or in the private homes of the our workers seeking to fuel their own private industries in hopes of taking that step towards even greater prosperity. Flammable gases can be turned to welding and construction of airships wholly! The price of electricity shall plummet to such lows that only the rich will burn candles! Fresh water and salt prices shall fall! All goods will be more affordable than ever before with this direly needed labor being turned to greater works!"

"Rejoice my friends, for we are standing at the very ledge of a golden age likes of which the human imagination struggles to comprehend! No enemy stands before the might of our armies. Even as our enemies abroad make crude fabrications of our muskets, our nation pushes the boundaries of engineering prowess with every passing day. Our brave citizen soldiery, armed with automatic weaponry, carried to battle by the finest vessels in land, sea and air and commanded with the finest strategic minds this world has ever known. Tell me then who can challenge our might?"

"In our society wealth flows like a river to all levels of society. Men who had lost everything now and came to us as refugees now live like Kings as fellow patriots and citizens. In no other nation is the level of social and economic mobility so determined by an individual's own will and commitment his fellow man."

"Our very ideology itself shakes the world to it's core like and like shacks in a storm, the lesser nations crumble from within, revealing the flaws in their construction as winter claims the world. Their people calling forth their leaders to be held accountable for thousands of years of failure."

"The world looks at our labors in envious awe as we carve our names on history as the greatest civilization mankind has ever known! Name me a single nation in legend or history to whom winter spells the beginning of a golden age like ours? Our deeds match those of gospel preached by priests, yet we are but men. Has the human race ever known such glory!?"
>>
[3/3]

"So let us give a bow to our enemies and thank them with all the overbearing love and grace only the mightiest nation in the world can provide. The bitter looks you give to us are a greater gift than any I have bestowed upon my people and shall be treasured in the living memory of our people for generations."

"I hope you, my proud citizens, shall enjoy this independence day with high hopes and the knowledge that our prosperous future is secure."

...And then the dream collapses.

You open your eyes inside a room filled with alchemical instruments, shelves of herbs, mineral powders and other materials used commonly in medicine or poisons. The walls are plastered with lime, the tiled floor is decorated with elaborate carpets. There's a window of colored glass, now wide open to allow the air in and the candles in the room remain unlit as the daylight shines through the window, lighting up the room.

You knew what this place was at first glance. It was a Maester's study, and a richly equipped one at that, not falling short of the Citadel's own facilities. The bed you lied in at was very clean and of good quality, possessing sheets of highest quality linen one can expect to find in city markets.

At the opposite end of the room, there were richly decorated screens, behind of which you heard a rustling noise of cloth and shoes dragging on floor as well as the scraping of a mortar and pestle. Someone was working behind there.

As you were still scanning your surroundings, a man walked from behind the screens with a sealed jar of paste of some kind he placed on one of his shelves before taking a look at you. Though robes of a Maester, his were well made and well kept and from his neck hung a chain with a very high quantity of links from most every subject taught by the citadel.

As he notices you are away, he gives you a smile and addresses you in a grandfatherly manner.
"Ah. Lord Tallon you are awake. It is I, Grand Maester Pycelle. A man tried to assassinate you using Basilisk Venom. Horrible, horrible thing. Expensive as well and difficult to come by, yet it's effects can't be mistaken."

"How long have I been unconscious?" You ask, still a bit groggy and confused.

"It has been a week since you were laid in my care. It was a very close call and at times your breathing and pulse seemed to have stopped. Nevertheless, the greatest danger has passed. I recommend avoiding alcohol and straining yourself excessively until you regain your strength. Meat based diet is also advisable, it'll help with recovery."

"Thank you for your service Grand Maester Pycelle."

"I serve at the crown's pleasure Lord Tallon."

To add some context to this. If we can keep our survival a secret, we might be able to catch our enemies with their pants down.
They'll think we're dead and start showing their hand more.
>>

Considering the fact that it has been a week and Pycelle has people he reports to on a daily basis I seriously doubt our survival has gone unnoticed. Furthermore, what exactly do you hope to accomplish?

The Old man gives you a winded response, speaking in ponderous tone.
"I know not the details of the situation as I was caring for you, but everything happened very quickly. When the news of your admittedly exaggerated demise spread, I hear there was violence at Fleabottom and the knights at court all volunteered their services to help catch the outlaw. There was quite the hunt for the culprit for the short period it lasted."

"It was however, the Kingsguard who claimed the deed. I believe it was Ser Jaime Lannister and Ser Barristan Selmy who apprehended the man. Your brother Rickar and the goldcloaks escorting you on that horrid night identified him to be the man."

"So who was he? Who sent him?" You inquire the old man as you slowly get used to groggy state your body is in.

"Some son from the recently disgraced houses. When his family's involvement in slave trade came apparent, it seems he alone escaped justice. There is a detailed report from the interrogation before he perished in the dungeons, but I've not read it. I do believe he was motivated by vengeance. House Bonnar? Bonner? I forget the name... An ill bred house of low esteem surely."
He finishes, in a dismissive tone as he shakes his head in disapproval.

"So that's it? The matter is dealt with then?" You ask with a hint of disbelief

"From what I gather, this seems to be the case." He states stroking his beard

"I'll be honest, I was half expecting him to be sent from Myr, Lys or Tyrosh."

He nods in agreement
"As were we all, save for Lord Varys. He dismissed this on the grounds that it would have been an uncharacteristically rapidly planned attempt for any eastern assassin, though I suppose he of all people would know such horrid matters best... Ah! I almost forgot. I am to inform the king of your recovery soon as you opened your eyes."

"Could you pass the message for my family as well?"

"Of course Lord Tallon. The King is happy to provide an attendant as well to deliver you food and help you change your clothes until you regain your strength."

"Thank you Grand Maester Pycelle."

He gives a nod as he hobbles out of the door in an excessively geriatric fashion you knew to be fake.

As he left the room, you were left alone, staring at the ceiling in your bed, feeling weakened and quite hungry as you tested out your limbs. Shriveled and weak, compared to the bulbous body you enjoyed in your sleep. On the left arm you were struck with venom, the veins around the scar had darkened to pitch black under the skin, leaving a disfiguring mark on your shoulder where it grazed you.

As you lift yourself into a sitting posture on the bed, the door opens and a familiar woman enters.
Bella Norcross, the lady of Copperhall and your mother. She makes sure to close the door behind her as she comes in with a steaming bowl of beef stew on a tray which she places on the nightstand before taking a seat next to the bed.

As she does this, she says nothing, she just looks at you quiet for a few minutes before speaking.
"You almost died."
"Yes." You reply in a hoarse tone
"You can't keep doing this. When the next one comes..."
You elect not to give her a response, fully knowing you could say something cocky or arrogant here, but it didn't feel like the place for it.
"You need a retinue of loyal men, ones that never leave your side and will protect you with their lives."
"...I'll see to getting a killteam prepared."
She keeps looking at your eyes intensely.
"You also need a food taster."
"Already got one."
"And for spies-"
"Already have a secret police."
"What about..."
You cut her off
"I assure you I was already quite well prepared before this incident. I will be sure to take further security precautions and be better prepared for the worst case scenario."
She nods quietly as she passes you the bowl.

"You will need heirs. Sooner better than later. I don't care who at this point as long as she's young and fertile. You can't afford to remain heirless. It makes you a target."

You quietly sample the stew and mull over the notion without giving out a reaction.

"Nothing? No snide comments or cocksure attitude? No secret plans?"

You shrug
"It's not like I've a harem of lovers or anything. I'm not exactly Oberyn Martell here."
"Surely you've met plenty of women during the years you've lived in the North?"

Once again you give a dismissive shrug
"I'm not a social butterfly, it's not my scene."
She sighs in frustration

"I must take matters into my own hands then. When you return to the North, I will come with you and I'll not leave until I see you married, happily or otherwise. Else you'd conveniently forget about the whole matter the moment you set sail."

>What is your reaction to this?

>>

Just so you guys know, any alliance through marriage means the house in question can kinda request aid from you.

Right now, Tarlys and Ashfords are technically allied to your house by marriage. You are honorbound to aid them in event shit goes down. Same kinda goes for whomever Rickar marries and whatever house you marry into.

Boltons don't have any confirmed female members whatsoever unless there is some distant branch house somewhere.

Manderly has a daughter, as do the Cerwyns and Reeds. Forming an alliance with any of these is a good deal (especially Manderly but that might be expensive to set up unless played well). Not much point in tying ourselves to southern politics, especially with our industry focus and Throat-slitting plans up North.
>>
>>4433615
In case you wanna tie yourself to southern politics, Jorah Mormont married a Hightower. High towers are married to Tyrells. Tyrells are married to Redwynes.

This would in theory mean an alliance between Tyrells, Redwynes, Hightowers and Tarlys, creating sort of a political Reach megablob for them down there.

Whether or not this alliance would practically function is another thing.

"It's settled then. I'm glad to hear you at least have some interest for the fairer sex."
She says with a deadpan voice

You scoff
"Oh, fuck off with that sort of talk, I'm perfectly capable of the "natural obligations" and I do on occasion appreciate the feminine beauty, I'm also not saying this just because we're being eavesdropped on from hidden passages in the castle."

"Oh, ha ha" she gives a sarcastic laugh.
You give her a smug and condescending look.

"You're serious?" She whispers.
Not bothering to lower your tone you speak out.
"Oh come now, it's fairly common knowledge to anyone who bothered to pick up a history book that Maegor the Cruel built the Red Keep much less of a defensive structure and much more for the purposes of being able to spy his entire court. Naturally, me being one of the most interesting men in Westeros and the fact that we're in the Grand Maester's study would logically suggest that this place is observed nearly every hour of the day."

"Also, I've been playfully taunting Lord Varys for a while now with eunuch jokes in my letters. I do hope he hasn't taken them as a personal insult, after all, it was merely meant for a bit of harmless banter during what I presume for him be the most boring part of his day."

Your mother looks at you with confusion in his eyes, unsure of whether or not she should say anything.
You place your finished bowl of stew on the nightstand as you carefully rise out of the bed, still leaning to the piece of furniture as you try out your weakened legs.
"Could do with a cane I reckon. Mind bringin me one from the opposite side of the room?"

As she does so, you elect to speak in clear voice, not entirely sure from where an eavesdropper might be.
"In case our resident peeping tom isn't spooked out and fled already, electing to linger, I should hope you do tell Captain Gash that while I do find some entertainment in these antics, it's a bit creepy for him to stalk on me so."

You hear nothing from the walls
"I do understand he is a shy man however, and I would invite him for some beers and a game of billiards, but sadly with my condition, partaking in alcohol is inadvisable. Oh, and in case this is one of his child laborers, do mention I told him to give you lot some sweetrolls or something, he'll be pressured to go along with it, I'm sure."

Your mother speaks with disapproval as she hands you the cane.
"You shouldn't push your luck so. This is foolish, whether or not we're being observed."

"Oh, nonsense... Spies are people too."
You reply as you try out your freshly acquired cane, giving a short walk about the room.
"I do think I'd like a breath of fresh air however."
"Are you good to walk?" Your mother asks concerned
"For small distances I reckon. I'll take breaks if I get exhausted." You reply as you casually hobble about with your walking stick.

Your mother led you to the courtyard where the knights of the Red Keep were training, along with them was your Father as well as your younger brother Rickar who was getting his ass handed to him by the former in a ring.

As you walked into the view of the spectators, you got looks from various noblemen looking down from above who were congregated to their own seperate little groups. You didn't really recognize any of them, save for the Queen and her brother who were talking about something in private. Apparently your arrival had stirred up the nobility somewhat.

Uninterested of their shenanigans, you and your mother made your way to the ring where your father and Rickar were training, merely observing until Rickar planted his ass in the sand again.

"Your swordsmanship is garbage Rickar." You state
Your father raises his visor, revealing a broad smile.
"It's good you're back on your feet. Rickar here has been too distracted to learn anything save to swing harder."
"Strong blows are good. Hitting however, is better. Else you'll get bodied by some random ginger because you missed your shot." you reply in a sarcastic stone
"You're not being funny." Your mother states coldly
"I should hope not, it fucking hurt."

Rickar, now on his feet looks at you and smiling as he nods.
"It's good to see you up and about."
"It's good to be up and about." You reply

There was an awkward moment of silence where nobody knew what to say, or if they should say anything.

We don't get anymore lives so this seems to be the last one. Didnt the doctor suggest not to do anything strenuous for a week until we recovered? Leaning to the wooden fence of the ring, you decide to break the silence.
"So, you lot got any plans on what you're going to do after this nonsense in the capital is all settled?"
"I'm going to be receiving a tutoring from the Lords and Knights of Dragonstone to learn what is expected of me and how to actually manage the lands I'm going to be responsible of. They're a lot more welcoming than I expected." Rickar replies proudly

"I'll bet they are, seeing that most all of them of naval persuasion. Who have you been hanging out with, just out of curiosity?" You ask with a hint of suspicion in your voice.

Your mother interjects
"House Velaryon has taken an interest in Rickar and our house after your stunt. Perhaps they expected your demise and thought it good opportunity to make friends with one of your heirs."
"That's a very cynical way to look at it." You point out

"I've actually talked to Lord Monford Velaryon while here. He said he got an opportunity to try out a gun and he was very interested in seeing the Hammer." Rickar states

"Him and everyone in the known world." Your mother sighs

Dismissing the notion of doing another guided tour, you change the subject "So, what about you lot at Copperhall? Any plans?"

Your father shrugs as he gives a nonchalant response "We'll work the land and enjoy it's providence, just like we've always done. Albeit Lord Tarly is looking for an excuse to come and talk to you."
"Our lands provide us well enough." Your mother inrejects
"Your brother will marry the Tarly girl in few years. After we've found a wife for you, it's Rickar's turn, albeit I won't object if he should find a good match while we work your matters out."

You shrug unsurprised, Reach was never a very eventful place to begin with.
"That's fine and all, though I feel like I should... give your providence a bit of a nudge? Accelerate the process a bit, you know? I've got huge stacks of cash, so does 5000 gold sound? For both our houses in Copperhall and in Dragonstone. If nothing else, should afford comfortable retirement days."
You state casually

"Just like that?" Your father asks, clearly surprised and taken aback
"Just like that." You respond "I reckon sharing fortunes with one's family is only decent after winning big. I know that you're not exactly poor, but-"
"Say no more Arthur." Your mother says warmly. "We'll make sure to put it to good use. Thank you."
She says as she gives you a light hug as your father pats you on the shoulder.

"Nonsense. If you feel so reluctant, just spend it on guns and ammunition. Your liege will like that and it'll all flow back to my pockets."
Rickar nods
"I might just do that. Maybe I'll do better with guns than swords. Who knows?"

As you were having a touching family moment, an absolute goon shows up.
A young page bearing the King's colors intrudes with his goony little presence. The boy was so goony that if he were a video game character, he'd be one of those characters whom the developers forgot about for so long that even six months after release their name was still placeholder #3.
That is how insignificant this little goon was and your goon sense was never wrong.

The sheer level of goon was such that it came only once in a thousand years and is only spoken of in ancient alien prophecies. From head to toe, this creature was nothing but goon. His very essence irradiated such a force of unimportance and forgettability to the point that you almost mistook him for one of those members of European Parliament who never actually spoke, but always clapped excitedly whenever a motion was passed.

He was there, yet he wasn't until observed, a true specimen of Schrödinger's goon.

"Lord Arthur Tallon" The little goonlet spake so excitedly that spittle almost flew from his goony little mouth.
"The hand of the King would like to know if you'd join him for a game of Cyvasse along with tea and snacks."

>Hand of the King: Jon Arryn wants to have a chat, what do?

He is too goony to be a spy. He is so goony that Lancel Lannister, the king's squire looks at this goon and says "wow, what an absolute fucking goon".
That's how much of a goon he is.

He comes from a long line of goons and boast the fact that he is a thoroughbred goon. For generations, house Goober has provided the crown the finest goons known to the realm and this goon is a perfect specimen of their masterful goonsmanship.

During Robert's rebellion, knights would specifically target house Goober first because their goonsmanship was feared and respected.

The sheer inconsequentiality of this creature cannot be understated. Even the greatest goonologists in the Citadel could ever hope to see such specimen once in their lives, for once such a goon leaves the line of sight, the world is as if he never existed at all.

Gentlemen we are talking of a goon of such magnitude it is physiologically impossible for this creature to ever perform a deed with any degree of meaning in the world. Like an anvil on a soap bubble, the goon would simply collapse, leaving not even a stain.

He is goonier than Santa's elves, goonier than oompa loompas, goonier than those grey dudes in Power Rangers who always got rekt before anyone even transformed.

If you look for the word goon in the dictionary, the picture of this creature can be found.

Have I explained sufficiently how much of a goon he is?

The young little goonlet introduces himself as Tob Goober. Truth be told the tiny goon was so goony that you couldn't be certain if this was just some goony randomly generated NPC line that would get shuffled on a timer in order to save on assets for the game developer.

When you flicked him a silver coin as a tip, you were pretty certain he changed voice actors there for a while because of the sheer lack of budget on this little goonlet was enough to rival the quality of a Todd Howard game.

You had the distinct feeling that if someone placed a bucket on his head, his pathfinding would still work due to the sheer non-essential nature of this little NPC.

Anyway, setting aside the goony nature of this little goon, you hobble behind the little goon with the support of your cane to the royal gardens with the men and women of the court, stopping to whisper among eachother as you walked past them, but you paid them no mind.

"You didn't need to escort me." You say as you walk past an ogling pair of handmaidens.
"With your condition? Yes I very much think I do." Your mother replies, receiving only a dismissive scoff in return

The goon took you to a gazebo surrounded by guards before scurrying off. Inside the royal gazebo sat the Hand of the King, Jon Arryn talking with his pregnant wife Lysa Arryn surrounded by servants. The sound of your cane on pavement as you approached disrupted them from their discussion.

The Old man smiled as you approached.
"Lord Tallon, I'm glad you could receive my invitation. And this is..."
"My mother, Lady Bella Norcross. Apologies for her appearing without invitation, but alas, I was but some days ago given a lethal dosage of basilisk venom. I believe some minor breach of etiquette could be forgiven."
He nods with a warm smile
"Family is important. Lysa, do you mind entertaining Lady Bella while we have our game here. Perhaps she can tell you about her experiences as a mother. I trust you aware of the rules of Cyvasse Lord Tallon?"
"I've won a few games in my day Lord Arryn."

The table is set, a coin is flipped and the game begins.

>29 Lord Arryn finds the game and the company highly enjoyable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rx50TQpFjw

You move out your king first, making sure he's in a more defensible position.
"So, what's this game about Lord Arryn? You've me at a disadvantage here."
Lord Arryn moves his knight and replies
"I'd like your opinion on something Lord Tallon."

As you move your piece, he continues talking and makes his move.
"It's a free cities issue. The small council is worried that they will restore the triumvirate once again."
"That was always a matter of inevitability Lord Arryn. Three way stalemate could not last forever, this situation is in fact, much preferable." You state as you move your horseman to flank his archers.
"How so?" He asks, as he takes his turn.
"When an alliance is formed where each of the three wants to become the master of the two, reinforcements do not arrive, supplies go missing, orders not relayed properly and fingers pointed all the way, retreat is carried out when duty mandates to fight. This all for the sake of making sure to conserve one's own strength while sapping that of your rivals."
You reply, as you send your dragon to hover over the middle of the table.

"What you say has certain sense to it. You think it a trick? Smoke and mirrors?" he asks
"All warfare is based on deception. When you are weak, appear strong and willing to fight and thus you may repel an army you cannot face in battle. Anyway, your move."
He nods as he takes a look at the edge of the table and takes his turn.
"So by your telling they are putting up a strong front."
"They're trying to restore their credibility since I debased it. In terms of law, taxation, geography, military makeup, bureaucracy... It is impossible for this alliance to be equal without years of planning and diplomacy. They will spend more time speaking than acting and it will take ten or twenty years to make the necessary military reforms to be able to function as a cohesive army, that is, if they've the will to it."
"Do you have any reason to believe why they wouldn't be able to do this?"
"All three are pornocracies Lord Arryn, dismantling centuries old institutions of corruption that allow dynasties to survive under republican rule doesn't happen in a day, should it happen at all."

He takes a moment to ponder what you said
"So you would be inclined agree with Lord Varys and Petyr?"
"I wouldn't know Lord Arryn. I don't know what those two have said."
"Ah, forgive me, you weren't there. When Lord Varys told us of the possibility of the Triumvirate reforming, Lord Baelish said that if we could secure the Stepstones before they do, it would help filling up the crown's coffers by charging a tariff from passing ships. Both seemed to agree that if it should be done, it ought to be done quickly."
You shrug
"Could work. Possibly. What does the King think of all this?"
"He has been slowly warming up to the idea" He state as he moves his piece "But I reckoned that you, the man who pushed them to a corner, would be able to provide valuable input on the matter upon recovery."

We want the Stepstones, if the crown takes it we'll never get it.
We should tell them we have a truce with the free cities to which we are honorbound (Arryn will respect us for it). So we and our ship cannot help them in this endeavour.
Suggest the alternative of attack the Summer Isles and supporting an exiled prince like Jalabhar Xho in exchange for tribute / loyalty. With us by their side they need not fear their strong navy.

Baratheon will tell us to STFU because its the Stepstones, not the Free Cities. Likewise, trying to control the Stepstones with the whole of Westeros and Essos on our ass (dor one reason or another) is insane. Rather let both continents (and especially the Westerosy lords) squabble over the Stepstones while we build the Canal and make as much dough with *far* fewer risks and chance of the land simply being taken from us by royal fiat.
>>
>>4438049
>Encourage the crown on seizing stepstones
Making the stepstones a possession of any sort is highly problematic. If the crown is going to charge tariffs, then those funds need to go right back into the defence and development of the stepstones. If we can establish a supermajority westorosi population and culture, it will be far easier to keep im the longrun. Chances are that the stepstones will cost and extravagant sum in the shortterm. But I like the idea.

Just an FYI that we will likely not be getting any of the land and it will be split among the various people the crown owes money to. This, however, is beneficial to us since the attention of the lrods will be drawn to the Stepstones and we will be free to make our Canal up north that we control 100% and is almost as lucrative as the Stepstones itself. Moreso if there is infighting (which there will be). Bonus points for keeping assassins off our ass as well since Essos is busy dealing with the locals at their doorstep and the Hammer we sold them.

Other than the fact we already achieved everything we wanted from the Stepstone plan, which was money, fame and prestige. I dont see how you swing this new plan in a positive light. Also we'll ineveitably get dragged into the conflict as one of the most experienced naval commanders in all of Westeros.

Selling the Hammer also doesnt sit well, considering it puts us in the exact same place as before it was built. No protection of our own to talk about and since it could be assumed more lords will be roped into helping with the Stepstones, we cant just call for aid like we did with Manderly. We sold the plans for the Hammer already, if they want something similar, go ask the Merman for one.
>>
>>4438049
Random question: Are you a member of the 63e Regiment, in M&W NW?
>>
>>4438407
I can't say for the other thing but the plan on the disc for selling the hammer seems to be because it would give us land and we can buy and use a few cogs which we arm with cannons while we make ironclads using the arkania tech and scrap the cogs once done
>>
>>4438290
To clarify, the King will be taking the land, not us. We will likely get no land out of this. However this is great for us since we will not have to deal with the polidicking about to happen and it draws attention away from our other efforts, leaving us more free to do our shit.

Its a good idea.

>>4438407
See above. Also if we sell the Hammer and allow Mannis to buy more cannons for an inflated price we just make more dough on them buying outdated equipment.

As to security, we can get a few cogs for chump change and outfit them with some cannons. We only need to deter raids and that is more than accomplished this way. Once the canal is complete we can likely sell the cogs for more than we bought them for (or even get them for free from the crown after the sale).

>Encourage the crown on seizing stepstones

You mull the notion over for a moment. Seeing that the free cities have their noses bloodied and still shaken from the humiliation, Stepstones should essentially be free real estate as long as Braavos or Volantis do not interfere.

A rush of memories floods your brain, memories of a lifetime you never knew of causing a paradigm shift as if something just clicked in your brain.

"Lord Tallon? Are you alright? It's your move." The voice of the old man, restoring you to reality.
"Ah, yes, was just thinking." you say as you make your move
"My stance on whether or not Stepstones could or should be taken relies largely on how substantial of a force the crown is planning to commit on the operation and how well informed and skilled the men in command are. The venture would surely be worthwhile, there's not doubt about that. The Stepstones are a key to controlling the narrow sea after all and all the trade that flows through it."

The Hand of the King takes his time making his turn, as if taking his time considering what you just said.
"Out of curiosity, what would you consider a substantial force?"
"That depends on the commander. Give someone like Balon Greyjoy a fleet and he will find a way to sink it on a pointless venture regardless of the strength. A commander who has something other than sawdust between his ears is required."
"Let's say you were in charge of planning and had command?"
"Me? With Hammer in play, any major fleet in Westeros could pull off seizing the existing forts with minor losses. After all, we're not expecting any massive battles here, just cleaning up pirate bases."

"And what of casualties for holding the region?" He asks with a judgemental tone.
"I take it from your tone you're not in favor of the deed?" You reply

"I am of the belief that Westeros doesn't need any more wars." He states
"With all due respect Lord Arryn, this wouldn't be an act of war. The Crown would simply be stabilizing our borders due to pirate activity a valid cause for military action if there ever was one. Prince Stannis did a similar thing in the Bite a few years past."
"It is merely a war by another name. There will be sieges, there will be battles and there will be an occupation and there will be loss of life."

"Is it holding Stepstones that concerns you Lord Arryn?"
"Dorne resisted Targaryens for centuries. Invading an unknown land unwilling to accept a new ruler comes with great perils as Martells have shown us. Holding such land is costly. Pirates there have castles, fleets and fighters of their own. We lack a clear picture on the layout of the terrain, the strength of their fortifications, their numbers and the political state of these lands. I fear with so many unknowns, the war would drag out and cost us more than it would gain."

Hold on. I actually know all of that don't I?

A shiteating grin blossoms on your face as you deliver your response with a light chuckle while moving a piece.
"It would seem to me then that the crown requires my assistance once again. I shall endeavor to produce such documents as necessary for our nation to make an educated decision. Of course, I should like to expect the crown offers substantial favor for substantial services, seems fair, no?"

The old man surveys the board and responds calmly
"It would count towards your achievements. How substantial your service is seen depends entirely on the crown however, but if you provide us with something on par as you did with the Iron Islands, you may rely on the crown bestowing it's favor."

Your grin widens as he moves his piece.
"Excellent, then I believe the crown shall not be disappointed."

"How long do you need to produce these documents?" He asks while you move your trebuchets in range to corner his king.

"You may expect the documents to start rolling in come evening. You shall have your maps and as thorough an account on my understanding on the state of said islands, but I do require a well stocked study to record my findings." You respond, in a self-satisfied tone

"Then you shall have it Lord Tallon."
He says as he flicks his king over to it's side.
"Good game. Would that I had the time for another one, but I am a very busy man."
"Good game. I'll send the documents to the royal war room once they're done, you can review them there and the council can make their own decision."

You shake his hand before you part ways, both of you retreating to their own labors.
>>
[2/3]

>The King's War room, two days later

King Robert was performing an act uncharacteristic of him. He was studying the documents provided to him by what he considered to be a reliable source of information far as maps were concerned. The man had proven himself before during the Greyjoy Rebellion, however, this time he had outdone himself.

As he referenced the documents, he placed model soldiers and model ships on the map, of course, he had found this way of marking the map crude, and less than desirable in order to portray the full scope of information he had at hand.

Wooden coins with pictures of different resources. Various colors of thread held by stone weights to mark out alliances. Differently colored peasant figurines pieces to mark populations and from which peoples they were composed of, chits with various colors to represent difficulties of terrain, colored markers to tell which of them were at state of unrest... Hunting grounds for pirates, smuggler coves, trade routes and so on...

The map was being cluttered with the overflow of information from the documents to be represented. A temptation to simply ignore it and go with one's gut existed, but King Robert Baratheon was a man who knew better than that. To remain ignorant in war was to invite defeat. Information like this was a surer weapon than the finest sword, and from what he gathered, the author of these works, Lord Tallon armed to the teeth.

The prospect of this campaign had begun with a flight of fancy, a pleasant notion to break the monotony and boredom of the court life. Something to consider, but also to forget after a good night of drinking and whoring. His foster father, Jon Arryn had been against the notion after all, but with this...

Whether to take the Stepstones or hold them, if this information was accurate, both were very well within realms of possibility. Not only that, if the information was accurate, the campaign, barring intervention from gods, could be extremely fast, taking only as long as the sieges and distribution of lands.

"Your grace, another set of documents for Lord Tallon. He says these are the last bit of information he has on the region."
He lifts his face from the papers. He had read them several times over by now.
"Well? What are you waiting for? Hand them over." He responds with a gruff voice
The panicked young squire scurries over, only to receive judgmental glance for his efforts. As the king starts king opens up the dossier, his eyes widen at the sight of it's contents.
"Did Lord Tallon say anything when he handed these to you?"
"H-he said you'd better appreciate the work he put into those."
The king scoffs and continues studying the documents

Inside the dossier were drafts of the major fortifications in Stepstones, including that of Bloodstone itself. The detail on them was immaculate, containing hidden side entrances and estimates on states of repair along with the estimation of the amount of a fight each battlement could pose.
>>
[3/3]

This sort of knowledge was normally kept carefully hidden, often destroyed as it damns the defender if leaked.

As he studied the papers, a guard came from the door.
"Your grace, Prince Stannis has arrived."
"Send him in." The King grunted

The sour looking Prince glances at the table as he enters the room.
"I take it you summoned me for my counsel for a change."
"You've read the Tallon reports Stannis. What do you make of this?" The fat king asks

"If the information he provided is as reliable as the maps on Iron Islands, then taking of Stepstones is only a matter of time and the cost of war." He replies in a deadpan voice "Ser Davos has for his part, confirmed what little he knew of Stepstones to be largely in line with Lord Tallon's reports."

"He hasn't proven himself a liar yet." The king responds dryly. "And I suppose he did get himself shot while showing his support for me. I see no reason to think he is insincere, what would he have to gain for it anyway? The fucking boglord boasts how little he has to deal with politics back home as it is."
He sighs as he pours himself some more wine
"I don't think this is anymore whether we could do it or not, but rather if we should do it. Do you agree?" The king continued.

Prince Stannis reluctantly mulls over the matter before giving his answer
"If we can avoid a war with the Free Cities while doing it, then yes, I think we should do it. The Pirate havens need be eradicated for the rule of law to be restored to the Narrow sea. I do not care for a stranglehold over the merchants like Lord Baelish does, but the opportunity to seize or destroy the outlaw fortresses should be taken."

He nods "You know, Jon was against this from the beginning. Now, he's not so sure anymore either, not after all the documents and the talks with our Warhawk. The prospects money, the popularity, the political capital that comes with the conquests and on and on..."

"That means you, Baelish, Varys and Renly supporting this with Pycelle and Ser Barristan holding no opinion on matters of peace and war, simply saying they'll go with what I think is best."

The King sat on his chair at the edge of the table, causing it to creak with his weight.

"Boy. Fetch me a scribe and Lord Tallon. We'll send a call to arms and hold a war council. We're going to take the Stepstones from pirates."

The Lannister squire scurried off the room fast as he could.

>+1 Crown favor
>Current Favor: 4

After couple of hard days of doing paperwork for the crown you finished your strategic doessier on the Stepstones. Following this the crown decided to call on it's banners and assemble a war council, your name being called to offer counsel to the naval commanders of this operation.

Of course, rather than being asked questions, you took a proactive approach and drafted a set of strategic plans and objectives for the crown, which you believed would help settle the conflict with utmost expediency and minimum casualties, focusing on knocking out the strongest concentrations of potential hostility, removing the power players in the islands and filling the void within the first week and then shifting focus to normalize the new order with a broad amnesty policy.

This product of vellum and ink, possessing the campaign plan which you considered most effective for the conquest of those eastern islands was sealed in an iron box, kept under lock and key and delivered in a neat package to the King himself who commended you on your military acumen.

He assured you that Operation Avid Horizon would serve as a cornerstone of the plan to take the Stepstones and that your service would not be forgotten.

As the realm began to prepare for war, things were getting much busier in King's Landing and you, as the celebrity you were, received looks from starstruck squires and envious nobles whom all sought for an opportunity to gain your attention.

This for you however, was a precious commodity and you did not relinquish it so very easily. So you walked the halls of the Red Keep, a people of one, separate unto himself, neither mingling nor mixing with others without due cause, regaining your strength and vigor with each passing day.

Many affairs required your attention inside these walls. The Crown owes you for practically handing them out a strategy guide on how to secure Stepstones and what sort of boon you wish to request in turn will need to be determined.

There's also the matter of your men. They're eager to return home with their booty and gather harvest. They will follow, but the longer your keep your lands depopulated, the closer those remaining home drift towards bankruptcy.

The Crown is more than eager to enlist the services of your ship and the firepower it possesses. Muskets and Cannons make taking fortresses easier and landings secure after all. Though this lust for weapons is as much an advantage as it is a liability as you'd wager the Crown is willing to go to extraordinary lengths for such a weapon as the Hammer and it's explosive shells.

Also, unless we are discussing this at a later date, bring up the trade of the Hammer for the land and Moat Cailin so we can build our canal.

I am pretty sure any talk about land must be with our liege, lord stark not the king.

It would be the crown buying the boat though. Plus I dont see the issue in sending a few ravens back and forth while the war prep is going on. Need the Kingsroad under Cailin anyway.

Then trading the Hammer should be done with ned, after we pay the money we owe him in exchange for land, since he is the one who own them.
The kingsroad is king property.
Before making any trade in this regard anyways, we should sit down and talk with all party involved so that they know what we are planning to do and how realistic it is, so that they don’t one day wake up and find the kingroad relying north and south cut off without knowing wtf is going on.

Please no.

Doing this through Bobby B has the advantage of the Kings say-so and while I would also ideally do it face-to-face with Ned, sending ravens and then finalising it once we are home (after the King has gotten the boat and told Ned to get it done) seems like the more prudent choice. Not like it is valuable land anyway. Literally a narrow strip of bog and bog-adjacent land. As to the Kingsroad, after we get Cailin we would obviously need to guarantee free passage along it. Build a drawbridge. Issue solved.
>>
>>4442817
The king does not own this land, he would be grossly overstepping in granting it.
Ned has 100% right over this land, the 7 kingdoms are called 7 Kingdom for a reason.

I'd rather keep the sword for ourselves since its a nice bargaining chip that'll never really lose value to the Lannisters or any other family really. Also because of the legitimacy / respect / fame bonus it represents.
>>
>>4442745

Could we send some supplies / funds home to tide them over untill we get back? As loyal as our men are, I'm sure they'd be happier if they knew that the folks back north are well looked-after.

We should keep the sword. There's no guarantee we'll be getting another one any time soon and the short term monetary value probably isn't worth losing a Valyrian Steel sword.
>>

>[Obsidian Acquisitions]: Invite Stannis for a ride aboard your ship to discuss the possibilities of you acquiring the tons of nuclear fuel he is sitting on.

At last, it has returned!
>>
While we're talking about future plans, we still need to look into getting a Kill Team into KL for the whole pre-civil war situation and saving Ned if needs be.

Things will probably be in a much better state than they were in canon but Cersei, Baelish and Lysa are so fucked in the head, I would imagine them doing their schemes regardless of how prosperous the Kingdoms were.
>>
>>4442823
This is what the Ravens are for my friend. I am saying that we make the deal and then hash out the details once Ned has agreed to give us the land. Doing this with the King now just gives us an excuse not to bother with politics later as well as get the best deal while the value of the Hammer is still massively inflated.

>>4442871
We can make more Hammers but we can not inflate its worth to such astronomical values ever again. Trading it in now for the Canal is the 4d chess move nobody is expecting. While they squabble over the Stepstones and draw the attention of the world with the scary ship we make our own Silk road through the bog and cash in as much money as the Stepstones tax. Its an awesome opportunity to make out like a bandit while leaving the other side feeling like a victor. Doubly so with the crown favours we have.
>>
>>4443166
Oh, didn't realize it was for the canal. I'm fine then
>>
>>4443166
Okay, I'm convinced. Flog the hammer and put the proceeds towards the canal.
>>
>>4443166
>>4443217
>>4443227
I don't know, the engine of the Hammer took three years of practically doing nothing else to make as we can't get other people to do it and we'd likely have to repeat what we did again since the industry to manufacture the parts still doesn't exist and the craftsmanship required is still limited to just us for the time being. In my mind, it'd be safe to safe until we sort those two problems, the Hammer is probably a one of a kind warship that I'm real reluctant to part with.
>>
>>4443262
Yeah, but how much of those three years were spent developing the engine, rather than building it? Plus, once we have a workshop with its own steam engine to power better tools and machinery and such we'll be able to produce complex machines much faster.
>>
>>4443166
Okay, I'm convinced. Let's sell the hammer
>>
>>4442756
The King can issue an executive order sorta thing, which basically tells Ned you've done a service to the crown and should be therefore be rewarded with X.

Your liege then will determine whether or not that is a possible thing for him to do realistically.

As luck would have it, the Prince who got the short end of the stick by receiving Dragonstone rather than Storm's end as natural succession would dictate, was unbeknownst to him, standing on a mountain made of something far more precious than gold.

Frozen fire. Dragonglass. Natural Obsidian. Whatever you liked to call it, the substance contains a great deal of energy which can be stirred and released. Though you did not possess the natural affinity of Pyromancers to light dragonglass by thought or gesture, what you had was something far more practical.

A device which could ignite the dragonglass in a self-powering cycle which allowed the black substance to continue releasing heat and eerie light, so long as the catalysts were in place. Whilst it failed as an experiment to open the gateway to magic, as a power source it is revolutionary.

Now, what you needed was to get a hold of the said substance, preferably in as high a quantity as possible, but the greatest supplier this side of Westeros was a very hard man to deal with. However, it was not as if you didn't possess things he didn't want.

The Hammer itself, outdated by Arkanian standards, is still a piece of cutting edge Westerosi technology in it's construction, it's engine and it's special purpose ammunition. Relinquishing this to the Prince would certainly guarantee him the ability to strike with impunity in the coming conflict.

There's also the fact that you possess the evidence on Cersei's infidelity, and great deal of other political knowledge which a man such as himself would find invaluable. Such as the fact that Lord Baelish is cooking the books, that Varys is working with the exiled Targaryens, including the one presumed dead and so on.

There's also guns. Promises of arms in industrial quantities, enough to outfit entire armies for a paltry sum of a resource he does not need.

There's also the possibility of a potential treatment for his daughter's skin issue. After all, you knew of a breed of toothless fish living in the Skahadazan river which lead to Slaver's bay. Paired antibiotics and repeated uses of said skin treatment, some of the damage caused by the greyscale could be reversed in most cases. Of course in late stage of infection, only cure was the bullet.

There's of course, the prospect of cold hard cash. Stannis, despite being a prince, is still the poorest of the three brothers far as lands are considered. Of course, Arkania did also possess many a profitable industry, knowledge of which he could use amass wealth of his own.

The man will without question, accept your invitation. Things you have to say, will without a doubt have value. Question remains how much do you wish to offer to him? The more you offer, the more you can ask in return in the end and the man possesses enough Frozen Fire to build an Empire upon.

Should point out that equality is a lie and different things have different value to the receiver.

Naturally skin treatment for her daughter can't compare with having a mountain of cannons and muskets or an unstoppable warship.

Baseless information also doesn't beat evidence.

Considering the info is coming from us it should be more than reliable enough. So you're saying offering up treatment for his daughter, dirt on his political enemies, and penicillin won't be enough? It's not as though he himself is capable of using all the dragonglass.

I am saying different options give different amount of leverage with him.
Technically, gold alone is a way to get obsidian guaranteed.

If you just offer him dirt on the small council without evidence and try to pull his heartstrings, you will get something out of it still, but not like, say, free access to mine as much obsidian as you want or something as you aren't even willing to pay for it.

The stuff is pretty worthless to him and its not like we will set up a military base on his island. Plus if we are going bu nuclear fuel proportions we dont even need much.

The ship's engines were already warmed up and ready to go when the prince deigned to arrive with his personal guard. Nameless, faceless mooks. People whom you personally could not vouch for, save for Ser Davos, who seemed to be accompanying him as well.

"Prince Stannis, Ser Davos, I am glad you accepted my invitation. We are ready to take the ship for a spin soon as you'd like."
The dour man came aboard and gave you an expectant look as he gave you his reply.
"Let's not waste any time then."
"Very good. UNTIE THE SHIP! We're going around the bay." You shouted to your men as you took the helm and set the gear on reverse, causing it to slowly move backwards until you could turn the ship around away from the docks.

"You know how to build a ship Lord Tallon." Ser Davos states as the vessel began to steaming away from the docks.
"It was a learning experience. You ever captained a ship this size?" You asked the onion knight as the vessel moved on.
"No, the point of being a smuggler was being discrete." He replied
"Boatswain Dan! Instruct Ser Davos here on the operation of the vessel whilst me and Prince Stannis have a chat in my quarters! I want smooth sailing and no disruptions!" you yell out as you give the helm to the confused knight.
"Do have fun Ser Davos. You're now Captaining the mightiest ship in the known world." you say, as you lead the Prince to the Captain's quarters.

"You wanted a private word with me Lord Tallon. Here I am, out at sea and away from spies." Stannis states as the door closes.
"Oh yes, that was the implication. Well surmised, care for something to drink?"
"No." He states as he gives you the same expectant look. "Just tell me what you called me here for."
"I called you here..." You point to the corner of your quarters
"To inspect the craftsmanship of my soundproofed closet, if you don't mind? It is very roomy and has space for two chairs and a table." You state as you open the door to what was essentially a smoking space disguised as a closet.
The prince gives a displeased as you lit a candle inside the box before he takes a seat in one of the chairs.
"Apologies for the discomfort, but discretion so near the capital is paramount. Your presence here certainly was noticed and I do not wish for my dealings with you to be entirely public knowledge."
You state as the door is sealed.

"And what sort of dealings happen in your closet then?" The prince asks with a judgmental tone
"The sort in which I offer you a deal which sounds too good to be true, causing you to doubt what the catch in is, even though there is none." You reply in a flippant tone.
"Speak your offer then." He says in a deadpan voice

"I seek a resource found in your holdings at Dragonstone. In return of this, I shall pay for in money and in information." You state, causing him a minor shift on his facial expression.
"Information that will allow Dragonstone to become prosperous. Information that will save lives. Information on the nature of treachery happening in the smallcouncil as well as information regarding the affliction your daughter suffers from."
As you spoke those words, his neck and face stiffened even further from his usual demeanor.

"So you have been withholding information." He states
"Of course I have." You reply, almost scoffing "Can you imagine the sheer amount of damage I could cause by simply revealing everything I knew to any nobleman who asked or bothered to eavesdrop on me? Loose lips sink ships and instigate murder." You reply, unshaken by his stern demeanor.

"You will tell me what you know Lord Tallon." He says as his hands curl to fists.
"For this to be a fair deal, I shall tell you what I wish in return. I seek for you to quarry obsidian from your lands and sell it to me. I shall pay for it, as if it were any other stone quarried to make it sustainable and profitable. Do I have your word that you will do this for me?" You insist

He gives the sort of frustrated look "whatever" and waves it away
"You have my word on it."
"Goooood... Excellent, very excellent."
You say as you offer up to shake his hand. He somewhat reluctantly does so.
"Now, let us begin."

"First and foremost, with the issue with prosperity. There are two products I shall teach you the means to produce. You can have these in written form, it matters not. The first is a medicine which cures many, many previously incurable illnesses, such as the Great Pox among many others. It also halts Greyscale in four out of ten cases. Considering your vicinity to King's Landing, monopoly over this substance alone will make you an extraordinarily wealthy man."

"Secondly, I shall provide you the schematics for an industrial distiller. A far more sophisticated device in comparison to the crude stills used by the Citadel, allowing for better quality control and upscaled production. This allows your servants to process massive amounts of strong drink to the point that it's so strong, it can be used to start fires or create more potent versions of existing medicines through alchemy as well as to prevent infection in wounds to greater efficiency. Of course, you can simply use it to undercut the imports from free cities whilst offering a competitive product, choice how you use it, is yours."
>>
[3/5]

The Prince, in silent confusion, watching you expectantly as you continue to lay on layers upon layers of butter on this deal.

"Now, on to your political enemies in the small council, starting from our Master of Coin. You may have already had your suspicions, but the man's cooking the books. The exact amount of embezzlement I do not know, because I'm not stupid enough to be seen going through his paperwork."

"So you claim him a traitor to the realm without any evidence."

"Either you believe me Prince Stannis or you don't. The evidence is in the hands of the crown, that is if you can get anyone to read it without ending up dead. I'm merely informing you of my knowledge on the matter. Anyone with basic math skills should be able this conclusion through observation alone and knowing the budget. If you think me wrong, feel free to dismiss it."

"Do you know anything else about Lord Baelish?" He asks

"Oof... Well, now there's a story. His motivations to me are a bit of a mystery. The man was infatuated with Catelyn Tully, now Catelyn Stark, whilst he was fostered by the Tullys. He still holds feelings for her in fact, far as I'm aware. The story does go deeper, but long story short, Lysa got knocked up by Petryr and his father dealt with it quietly. The hand's wife is still pining for him, which landed him his position to begin with. That, and his ability to make friends and skills at handling money."

"How could you possibly know this? Unless... you're with the Maesters." He states

"Now that is a very interesting guess, way off the mark though, but interesting nonetheless. Truth be told, I don't think the Conclave likes me very much. Speaking of Maesters, Pycelle is not really senile. Might have guessed, but he's only pretending to be a slow, geriatric man so he can keep his job. After all, who could blame an old man for falling prey to manipulations?"

"And what of Varys? Do you know anything about the spider" He asks with a hint of dread in his voice

"Varys... Varys, Varys, Varys...."
"Now there's luggage to unpack there as I know fair bit about him. A very dangerous man he is. Far as I'm aware, he's the one coordinating with the claimants in the East."

"You mean Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen?" He asks sceptically

"Well, them and Aegon." You reply

"Aegon?" He returns with a puzzled expression.

"Well, he told one Jon Connington he snatched away Rhaegar's son Aegon and replaced him with another baby, delivering the rightful heir to Seven Kingdoms into his hands. Of course the entire story can be a fabrication and the rightful heir to Seven Kingdoms might still be a wet stain on the Mountain's boot and he simply picked a random child to groom a candidate for a the Iron Throne according to his ideal. By the way, JonCon's going by the name of Griff in the Golden Company these days and the Young Griff he's caring for is Varys' golden boy."
>>
[4/5]

"And what of Viserys and Daenerys, what do you know about them?"

"Oh, I know they're moving about, Viserys is dreadfully paranoid and moving from city to city, though I imagine they'll eventually find their way to one of Varys' closest friends, one Illyrio Mopatis a magister who lives in Pentos. Might take years though and if observed, might avoid it altogether. I find those two fairly inconsequential as any man with a platinum hair can make a claim in the East, stating to be Dragon's descendant. Outside claims matter little against a strong nation as law is enforced only by the strong, and Viserys very much isn't strong."

"Threat or no, Robert will want them brought before him."

"Yes yes, but you should understand that the action can start a war Westeros is not ready to fight. At least if it's not handled with a sufficiently light touch. Normally people hire assassins for this sort of thing, but I don't personally believe in the merits of such an approach as killing them solves nothing until they've armies to disband. Meanwhile if they die out in obscurity and insignificance, every kind of victory has been achieved over them."

"They still have a valid claim to the throne, that makes them a threat." He replies

"It really doesn't..." You state dismissively "Not unless the vassals begin to grow so displeased with the current king that they seek to replace him, of course if that happens, well... then we'll have another Robert and another rebellion with a ruler who is convenient for those whom he rules over, and failing that the nation splits apart or the second Robert gets defeated. That's just how it goes, no man rules alone after all." You reply

"Presuming you're telling me the truth, I don't understand how could you possibly claim to know all of this." He states, frankly quite flabbergasted at the sheer infodump you delivered

"That tidbit of information was not part of the deal prince, and I'll not let you haggle for it. Damned if I'm even sure what you should or could do about all this to begin with. What I'm planning to do personally is distance myself away from all this nonsense, tend to my lands and stockpile guns." You shrug, as you give him your nonchalant reply. "Guns, after all, solve most problems in life."

"I need solid evidence Lord Tallon."

"And I've none to give you Prince Stannis. Of course by now, even if you will doubt my words, you should not be liable to dismiss them outright. I've accomplished far too much for a sane man to disregard me so easily, and with Greyjoys and Stepstones, I've proven my ability to acquire information... and speaking of information, the last part of the bargain."

"The Medicine which I provide you is effective at combating Greyscale, but in regards to the skin issues left behind, there's a species of toothless fish living at Slavers Bay in the river which runs through Meereen. It consumes dead skin and can be utilized not dissimilarly to how maggots are used by Maesters. This in conjuction with other treatments to Greyscale, will help reverse skin damage. Once a muscle is dead however, it cannot be recovered and once it reaches the brain, the patient is lost."

"And you say I should bring my daughter there?"

"You're a prince and the master of ships." You shrug
"Surely you can just send a ship to fetch those fish. If you need it, I'll whip you up some sort of aquarium system to transport and keep the things, although I imagine you could also ask the Citadel to do it, they should have the knowhow if you specify what you need. All you require is an automatic pump to run air through the water and to maintain the right temperature really. Shouldn't be too difficult and I imagine the fish will pay for themselves if you intend to let others utilize such exclusive facilities, or you can just move the whole operation further south so you don't need to pay the heating bill."
You finished whilst the thrumming of the engine let out a muffled sound on the background.

"And all you're asking is cheap dragonglass in return?"
"As much as you'll let me have, yes. As I said, this was always going to be one of those deals that sounded too good to be true. All you now need to do is fulfill your end of our bargain."
"Take as much as you'll like then. You'll have my word on it."

A shiteating grin explodes on your face the moment he says that.

"Thank, Prince Stannis, that was all I was after. I should hope you'll respect my anonymity in regards to all this political talk and tread carefully. People who hide their corruption prefer to keep said corruption hidden by any means necessary, even if it means regicide."

He nods
"I'll keep that in mind and I'll remember this service you did for the crown, even if it was done in the shadows."

>+1 Crown favor!
>Total favor: [5]

"I take it that's enough secrecy Prince Stannis. I'll make sure you'll receive your documents posthaste so you may personally evaluate of the reliability of the things I produce. You'll know where to find me should you wish to commission some arms."

You say as you open the door of your secret room and blow the candle.

I have just been in talks with the QM in the discord for the past little while and I think I've came across some interesting information that might change how people think about the Hammer and selling it. Specifically QM confirmed the following facts:

1) We could, when we return to the north, produce steel via the Bessemer process. All we need to do is set up a foundry which would apparently be easy as our land already has a number of highly skilled metal workers to produce these parts as the process is known to us from the Arkan-life.

2) We could, if we set up a factory / production yard, make a US Civil War Ironclad like the Monitor at a rate of one per month and in a straight up fight between such a Monitor and the Hammer, the Monitor wins without competition. Ignoring fringe cases where someone manages to board it (extremely unlikely since we can fit it with a gatling to eliminate boarders).

3) QM also confirmed that he'd suppose construction of an individual monitor would take roughly a year "Provided you got the materials" which the Bessemer process enables us to readily provide. Especially if we reduce the amount of wood and replace it with further steel structurally or in the armour.

4) QM has also confirmed that not selling the Hammer will make getting the canal land much harder (the rough gold price for this land being 100k gold, aka 1/2 of our current wealth) and this is a serious issue given how critical the canal is for many of our plans as well as for securing our position.

Given he also confirmed that having the Hammer out at sea takes so much of our native population that we're essentially unable to do anything while it is, compared to the crew-per-ship of 49 for a Monitor (meaning we could sustain a fleet of 10 to 12 Monitors from the Hammer's crew alone conservatively), I hope everyone can agree with me when I say that selling the Hammer in order to get the land needed for the canal is extremely smart since we can replace it with a far superior craft in a relatively short time frame.

The canal is critical, given how much it enhances our position and opens our somewhat isolated position up to international trade. Not to mention the earnings or fame from establishing it or the enhancement of military mobility and security from attacks from further south (as it forms a artificial barrier).
>>
>>4447341
Honestly I'm fine with selling the monitor to the crown with that logic
>>
>>4447341
If it's for the canal I'm all for selling it.
>>
>>4447341
Should also expect to pay for around 3500-5000 gold dragons for the labor and raw materials to produce one after the factory and steelworks is up and running.

Not sure if you actually care about building up your naval power overmuch though when you could also be directing your time and resources towards air power.
>>
>>4447707
This.

With the amount of gold the Canal will bring in we can import all the fringe materials we need to make proper airships and style on everyone in the known world (not to mention have a bombing range of n+1 due to not!nuclear rocks). The Hammer is at its highest price point right now. Selling it is the only sensible move, especially with how lucrative the Canal will be.

>Stannis POV

[1/2]

After the shady talks concluded Stannis Baratheon, with a troubled brow, paced through the vessel in a steady pace, inspecting the craftsmanship on the vessel as he went. The Hammer of the Waters, a blunt instrument to be sure, had the similar alien feeling as he got the Long Night.

It had a fashion and design to it's function, so very distinctly foreign to any other vessel in the seven kingdoms. It was not a mere improvement or alteration to existing design, it was as different as steel were to stone.

Long had he harbored doubts of the small council, but lacking in evidence as he were, there was naught he could do about it. Now however, he had direction and tools to work with provided by the very same Eagle lord who took three cities with this ship.

In his hands, should the Eagle's hold true, were keys to increasing his power. Contained within vellum an ink, a promise of coin and further still from the trade of stone requested by the man. Whilst he could do nothing about the very real danger the corruption in the council posed to the realm today, he had a path to grow stronger.

The ship's thrumming heart beat with a steady and mesmerizing rhythm, not missing a beat. He took a moment to look down to the engine room from above at as the wheels of the spun and pistons pounded with relentless, uncaring force before returning to the top deck.

If there was anything he learned from the maker of the ship, it's that a single man can make a tremendous difference, be it for good or for bad. In deep thought, he approached the helm. What was his duty in this situation? What should he do? What could he do? What did he need?

"Ser Davos, how does the ship handle?" He asks from his onion knight who was still at the helm, advised by the boatswain.

He returns the wheel to the boatswain and responds sharply
"A far more nimble ship than I expected Prince Stannis. I'll tell you this much, I wouldn't want to be chased by it."

The Prince peers at the man now at the helm.
"You were there. What's your name?"

"Ser Dan, my prince. Knighted by Lord Arthur himself, I am proud to call myself the boatswain of the Hammer, as well as the Long Night before the crown bought that ship." he replies as he maintains hold of the wheel.

"You've been with your Lord a long time then. Tell me of the battle in the Free Cities, well as you can." He inquires from the burly sailor

"As you wish my prince."
"There were hundreds of warships ships by my telling. When we approached Tyrosh, it seemed as if they'd never stop pouring out of the horizon. It was a very frightening thing, and the fools we were, had been riled up by years of talk of the Eastern slavers, the promise of gold and glory, the strength of our cannons and the assurances of the speed of our ship. At that moment, we all thought we had made a terrible mistake."
>>
[2/2]

"Of course, in the end, we were proven wrong and I'm now rich enough to be able to buy a keep of my own, but we didn't know it then. The Wardrums echoing in the horizon, the screaming of the sirens. I don't remember who fired the first shot, but thank the gods whomever did. After that, we were committed, we had to keep sending fire to the slowly approaching, vessels which poured like mud."

"These new cannons however and the new cannonballs, they tore them to shreds. It was a massacre. I'm not sure if we were panicked or drunk on power, but we were driven by something that day. I know what we did was just and necessary, but I do not remember fondly of the dying screams of the men we slew."

"I am glad Lord Tallon is not a savage hungry for blood. Every man who would flee, he let go. Every man who would surrender, could recover their wounded without ransom. Only those who sought battle were cut down. Though my knighthood was largely honorary, the war we fought was as noble, chivalrous and honest as it could be. No innocents were harmed and in that we all can take pride in."

"The war did however affect lot of us in different ways. Some have nightmares, some got a taste for the killing, hoping we'd slaughter through every free city in the southern coast, but not one of us regrets what we have done."

"Your loyalty for your lord is commendable Ser Dan." Prince Stannis states, nodding in approval.
"And the deeds you've done shame most men I've known who dressed themselves as knights."
He finishes as he walks towards the prow of the ship whilst the vessel began it's approach towards the docks.

Once the vessel was tied down, the prince left the ship, heading straight back to the red keep, armed with the knowledge provided to him by Lord Tallon.

>Planning time!

>Since you've accumulated quite a bit of royal favor, I think now it's good time to start considering exactly what you're planning to do with it.

>Royal favor can be used for things such as getting access to the forbidden sections of the Citadel by crown order, getting the rights to trade with the Pyromancer guild, getting crown mandates for roads, canals as well as simply dodging military service. Frankly anything you can think to ask from the crown can be bought with enough favor.

If you've questions on like how much favor something costs, feel free to ask.

Here's a few examples.
> Abstain for Military Service in Stepstones Campaign [ 1 Favor ]
> City Charter (Grants defacto autonomy when it comes to laws in your territory) [ 2 Favor ]
> Find a Knighthood Order [2 favor]
> Access to Pyromancer Guild [ 2 Favor ]
> Unrestricted Citadel Access [ 3 Favor ]
> Northern Canal Mandate [ 9 Favor ]
>>
>>4448210
How much favour would the ship give us?

Want the Canal and Citadel access.
>>
>>4448210
whatelse can get us more favours?
Military service in stepstones and selling the ship?
also gun deals?
>>
>>4448210
>Frankly anything you can think to ask from the crown can be bought with enough favor.
How much to become King Arthur of Westeros
>>
>>4448226
The Hammer is worth 10 favor alone.
Also, the whole arms deal stuff can also get you more depending on how much guns and ammo you actually wanna promise the King.

You could also offer to build up shit like concrete forts and stuff like that during the war of stepstones which also would grant you favor.

The Crown is also broke. You can get 1 favor for like 10k if you wanna donate to the war chest.

You can also do other crazy shit I haven't thought of as well to generate crown favor. The flashier and more tangible it is, the better generally speaking.
>>
>>4448243
>The flashier and more tangible it is, the better generally speaking.
What if we hold a festival and parade in the crown's honor where we're the guest of honor and ride a float down the main street of King's Landing in view of all the public?
>>
>>4448260
You already did that and got your brother a landed title in exchange of that.
>>

So get the Canal, access to the spoopy books and a city charter. Then skedaddle hoe to start our plans.
>>
>>4448373
I would rather not take the exemption from the step stones campaign.

For one having 1 Favor in the bank with the crown is nice to have as ablative shield to any fucking schemers and for a second if we can have the step stones campaign delayed for a little while we can get a proper black army of a few gun units and show of as proper gun usage in war.
>>
>>4448373
As much as I wanna go to war in the step stones, we really gotta check in on stuff at home / focus on future planning so I'll agree with this stuff.
>>
>>4448482
While I like the idea, I dont see us getting enough Favour from playing bouncer to enemy fleets over the months that this shit goes on. Much rather skedaddly home and get the ball rolling there. The ship will be with them anyway. Plus this would allow the new owner to generate more heat to draw attention from us. "Boglord blows all cash on digggng ditches." is a lot less catchy than "Captain Kirk BTFOs all pirate ships in under an hour."
>>
>>4448210
How about we fight in the stepestones campagin with the hammer to show the capacities of the Ship. The price of the ship would rise, as now everyone saw what that thing can do firsthand.
Also, maybe we can snack bloodstone and become warden of the stepstones/seas?
>>
>>4448671
This but we should also manage our feif while on campaign
>>
>>4448671
QM confirmed that we would be put on bouncer duty due to politics and prestige concerns. Further, it would be very unlikely that we would be given land from this, especially worthwhile land - the Crown has a lot of debts after all.

This is sort of why we should fuck off back north. The Stepstones will become a hotbed of political fuckery and will draw the attention of lords both foreign and domestic. This would leave us mostly up to our own devices with very little southern interference (especially if we make the Canal land deal well).

And as stated before, our lands are basically bankrupt right now.

Why do we want a Knightly Order or Unrestricted Citadel Access?
>>
>>4449673
Knightly Order means we can train a respected order of knights in new forms of warfare.
Unrestricted Citadel Access allows us to seek knowledge kept away from normies. Not just tech but records and radical ideas.
>>
>>4449673
The Unrestricted Citadel Access means we can access to all knowledge of the citadel. Knights numbers of our order are only limited by the ones we can maintain, it will give us even more prestige than we currently have, and we can build/organize the order however we want.
>>
>>4449673
Advantage of Unrestricted Citadel Access is that you can go to the Citadel and by King's Order, you can access the sections normally restricted to their order.
Why you would want to do this, I am not sure since your technology level surpasses their by an order of magnitude and it would annoy them.

Maybe there's some obscure lore you want to read, untranslated works or political texts or original manuscripts or something which haven't been copied, but overall, if you don't know what you actually want from the forbidden section, it doesn't actually do you a whole lot good.

Knighthood order on the other hand is a political tool because it's an organization which comes with as much prestige as their reputation carries. You have reputation which known, at least for the time being, across the known world.
Membership to an organization that does this sort of crazy shit like you do is a coveted thing indeed. Especially if this organization isn't a traditional cavalry force, but uses shit like tanks or aircraft.

In that case Knightly order is vastly superior. we do not annoy the citadel even more for them to work all the masters into influencing lords against us, and we get top tier recruits that are either connected or high performers for our new fightan men.

As for the 1 Favour not spent, that is i think best to be left in the bank and act as a nice deposit if we want something else in the future, like perhaps countering a plot or whatever.

on contrary,I think it is best to spend it.
since the favor only last as long the people who grant it are still alive.
which means when Robert dies. the favor is lost.
thus I believe that participating in the Stepstones as observer and support unit (1/3 crew of course) should allow us to use the remaining points to check out wildfire.

Instead of selling the hammer for a big immediate pay out, what if we keep it and loan it to people for long term payouts?
>>
>>4449861
terrible idea, upkeep and what if people can't afford the rental?
also Manderly is making loads of Hammer Of The Waters for cheaper price. Thus better to sell the ship to stannis for favors.
Also the favors is like current oppurtunities moment. There will be no more later.
>>
>>4449877
Who is Manderly?
>>
>>4449881
The Fat Man
>>
>>4449881
Lord Manderly is the owner of White Harbour, the only major city in the north and the man to whom we sold the rights-of-production for the Hammer of the Waters and Long Night class of ships in return for him taking the complete costs of commissioning the Hammer in his shipyard.

He is the only man legally allowed to produce those ships now and is going to make a killing selling them for the next few years: yet producing them takes time and there is a limit to how many and quickly they can make. Thus the Hammer has a period of time in which it is the only ship of its class and capability making it exceptionally valuable even beyond the symbolism of being the first or its involvement in the Free Cities Raids.
>>
>>4449881
The Hammer is at its most expensive point right now. From here on its only downhill. This is in contrast to the Canal which will only gain in value and will propel Arthur from being an upstart to holding sway at the big kids table along with the Lords Paramount. Selling the ship for a stretch of bog is literal 4d chess right now.

Also changing from >>4448373 to >>4449752 . The spooky shit in the library amybe really isnt worth the hassle and we could form an order of knights as an extension of our will.

>Crown's Arms

You arrange a meeting with the King, at this point, it was a matter so simple it invited much envy from rest of the sycophants buzzing about the palace. Of course the difference between you and them was that you had something meaningful to provide.

Anything you would say to the crown would be listened to, for the time being at least. This was the power of being a wealthy celebrity, and with no multinational cabal of pedophiles to pull your strings to influence the American elections either it was a pretty sweet deal.

Now, there were a few things you wanted out of him and you were prepared to sacrifice your flagship to get it. Namely, you had a mind to create another world wonder, a construction project which would transform the North itself, hopefully triggering a golden age of commerce for the region.

More Lords had been showing up in the Red Keep as ships began their muster. Many were eager to shake your hands and get some drinks with you and some of these requests you obliged, albeit only for brief moments. From what you gathered, this conflict was growing in popularity with the merchants and landless nobility for reasons of suppressing foreign trade as well as hopes of getting land.

Lord Baelish seemed to have no issues with convincing such individuals to invest unto the campaign, be it in terms of troops, ships or money with the forementioned arguments. He was overall, very well liked individual. Stannis is going to have a hard time getting rid of him, let alone replacing him with someone competent.

No northerners yet, which was understandable. Given decent weather, normal ships tend to make the journey in two to three weeks from White Harbor. Month or two is a reasonable time to expect for their arrival depending how long they spend preparing and how rapidly the message reached them.

Of course, with the current force of Crownlanders and Stormlanders, you reckoned the operation was still doable. Whether or not they wished to launch the operation pre-emptively was entirely up to the King.

The King had elected to take a break from his war plans to have a casual, private chat with you. As private as it could be in the royal garden, this delightful breeding ground of schemes, corruption and political intrigue whilst still flanked by his Kingsguard. Of course, what you were about to discuss was hardly a highly secretive matter.

[1/2]

You arrived first at the scheduled meeting. After all a King doesn't wait. He makes others wait for him, at least that's how the etiquette went. Despite the pats in the back and jovial manner he tended to address with those whom he respected, you two were not exactly friends.

Nevertheless, you did put in the effort to try and improve your relationship with the man to maintain a certain cordiality. Though the man was crass, you had, or at least you liked to think you had, developed a certain amount of class in which you conducted yourself.

You had made certain to prepare a table with various wine bottles to taste, including one of herbal liquor which bore your sigil brought from home, along with cheeses, fruit and some sundries, which you made after feeling some strange draw to the castle kitchens.

"Your grace, I'm glad you could join me."
You gave him a cordial bow as he arrived with his guards.

"What's this then? You trying to seduce me or something?"
The King laughed as he gave you a pat on the back.

"Perish the thought your grace. How could I dare to break apart such a happy family with my vile temptations adventure and glory?" You respond in a facetious tone

"Is that how you talk to your King then you fucking showoff?" He says slapping you at the back of the head.
"Apologies your grace, perhaps drinking will help smooth out my abrasive personality?" You say, gesturing to the table.
"If your squire would do the honors of pouring for us?"

He grunts as he takes a seat in one of the wooden chairs, causing it to creak a bit under his weight. After he does so, he gestures you to sit as well.

"So, what is this about then? Did you invite me to discuss a reward for your service after the war?"
"In a manner of speaking. Of course, depending how this discussion goes, we could solidify how the war ends right here and right now."

The confused squire looks at the bottles, unsure which to open.

"The Arbor Gold, if you don't mind Lancel. Rule of thumb, white wines are what is recommended for appetizers or white meat, whilst red ones are either for red meat or dessert. It's why we've also got two glasses each."

Robert gives Lancel a judgemental glare as he goes over to pour to him.
"He was the one who asked for Arbor Gold, why are you pouring it to me for?"
"I'm sorry your grace." He turns to pour for you
"Whilst I'm honored that you regard me higher than the king, it's bit of a faux pass." He freezes, stunned, unsure of what to do.
>>
[2/2]

"No no, a man finishes what he has started. Pour on Lancel and I'll pretend not to notice." You spoke to the now mute and terrified looking lad in a calm voice.

"Yes my lord, I'm sorry my lord."
You sigh

"So, where were we?" You say
"You were telling me about what you invited me to drink for." The King replies

"Right, yes, about making sure the whole war goes as planned and furthermore, maybe pushing forward the schedule a bit. I was thinking I could offer one last thing, granted, I'd like some things in return." You say as you grab things on your plate.

"Go on then." The King says as he's smelling his freshly poured wine.

"See, you remember when I said that the Hammer was priceless, in that the crown couldn't possibly afford to actually buy it off me? Well, I've had a bit of a change of heart. See, I think I've figured out what I'd want in exchange of that warship. I'll even top it off on ammunition and leave some officers to train the crew too so they can keep, use and maintain it."
You elaborated

"You'd have full control over a force which can strike at any currently existing fleets with impunity, blockade any port, secure any landing. I will however, in return, request a substantial favor in return, one which you might find both wonderful and unpleasant to grant in equal measures..."

He looks at you deadpan and gestures you to continue as he samples his wine.

"I'd like you to sign a some papers for me, a few charters and mandates. For one, I'd like a royal mandate given to me to begin the construction of a great work. A canal stretching from the Bite to Saltspear in complete control of me and my house. If I am successful in this venture, this will be a great work to rival any in history."

He gives you a somewhat bitter look

"You wish me to interfere with Ned's vassals and lands?"
"Hence the bitter part. Of course, a work such as this cannot possibly be completed through forceful displacement of populations. I would need to enter into negotiations to make sure your will be done. The deed itself will not be so very different from what Jaehaerys gave to the Night's Watch, save that in much, much smaller scale and the Starks will still receive full benefits of the now increased taxes and the tremendously increased ability to maintain trade and security in the coastal regions."

He sighs
"And what else did you want?"

"I'd also require a mandate for a knighthood order, a city charter and your leave to abstain from participating in the Stepstones conflict. I believe that with the preliminary scouting, the strategic advice, providing a substantial contribution in cutting edge wargear and with liberating the illegally acquired slaves, my men deserve the right to go home for the time being, if for no other reason than it's more practical to have them manufacture more equipment for the crown's forces in event this conflict should stretch on."

He sighs and speaks to you on a more relaxed tone
"I've read your papers you know, never was too big on reading you know. I've half a mind to reject your offer because you don't write your reports in such a ponderous manner. You cut cleanly to the matter at hand and I'd rather have you offering me advise during this campaign..."

"Of course, the lesser lords and nobles-, no offense, will cry and moan for me holding the opinions of an upstart in such high regard. You've tracked the deer, put a loaded crossbow a loaded crossbow on my hand and lined the shot for me here."

His eyes drift towards the bottle bearing your sigil.
"That made in your lands is it? Didn't think North had any wine country."
"Just some herbal liquor, I helped develop it during my short lordship. It is a favorite among the soldiers and hunters. Stronger than the stuff they sell at free cities. I sold Prince Stannis the schematics on the newest model of equipment we'll be using for it's production."

He takes the bottle from the table and opens it, giving it whiff before taking a swig straight from the mouth of the container before his face twists, as if drinking straight, undiluted, unsweetened lemon juice.
He shakes his face in the aftermath.
"Gods that's bitter."
You smile with schadenfraude as you elaborate on the substance.
"Puts some hair into your chest don't it?`One gulp of that is equivalent of drinking about seven gulps of beer or shittier wine. I gave a bottle of these to each every commander I defeated. That's the bottle that was meant to go to the Lyseni mind you, that is if they hadn't surrendered."

The King lets out boisterous laugh and pockets the bottle into his coat.
"I like you, but I'm keeping this one for later."
"Take it the stuff is to your liking then?"

He smiles from under his beard as he laughs.
"Look, I can't give you any promises right now. You're asking a lot from me and I'll need to sleep on this and talk with Jon and rest of the council, you know how it is..."

"Naturally your grace. It's not like my council would be happy if I made such big decisions all on my own either."

"Now that you mention, how in seven hells did you get your council to agree with this whole adventure of yours?"

"Oh that was the easy part, see, I never actually told them I was going to invade the free cities. I can only imagine how confused they are from all the rumors and letters they'll be receiving from now on."

The King lets out a low and reverberating "Hehehehe" laugh as he smacks the table.

"You fucking shitlord, I've been wanting to do that for years now! Gods... Never had a chance to be young and go on an adventure. Women to marry, wars to fight."

"Speaking as someone who was a squire for a hedge knight, it mostly tourney whoring, shitting in the bushes, polishing armor plates, eating shitty food and riding on empty roads. Most of it was fair bit less exciting than the bards like to sing."

"Reckon it was more exciting than the citadel? I heard you got enough links to be a Maester."

"Well... truth be told, I feel like they skimped out on some of them, but the Citadel did have it's merits when it came to practical education, you know, stuff that didn't involve reading. I'd say the high seas adventures were a lot better than my tourney days."

"I bet, a girl in every port. Fighting against the storms, pirates whilst trying to wring your coin from moneygrubbing merchants..."

"Well, I'd rather not spoil it. You'll be killing your own pirate kings soon enough and bards will make some half-assed songs where they'll rhyme irate with pirate in hopes of scoring some free drinks in pubs."

The King laughs merrily

"Gods if I can't see that one happening... Listen, you'll have my word your men can go home, as of the rest of the things you asked, I'll see what I can do."

"Thank you, I could not ask for more your grace. If you've any questions regarding the specifics on how this would go down, I'll be more than happy to answer the questions of you, the hand and the small council might have, now, returning unto the essential subject."

You pop open another wine bottle

"I believe there's still some wine and sundries left."

There was basically this age of heroes and legends where you got like kings who lived thousands of years, magical spells that supposedly severed continents and so on.

Over some thousands years from that, you Valyrians who tamed the first dragons and forged an empire on sorcery called the Valyrian Freehold. If you had dragons and or magic, you pretty much lived like a king due to all the slaves you got.

Then the magic started waning further, leading to steel becoming more and more important. Valyrians made plenty of magical artifacts to try and conserve power, but this didn't end up working too well in long run.

Eventually Valyria exploded, leaving it a hellscape nobody returns from, their empire collapsed, vassals revolted pretty much in unison killing all the dragonlords that didn't kill each other over the title of Emperor.

Finally, all you got left was Targaryens who instead of going to east and try to reclaim the clusterfuck of a collapsing empire ravaged by revolts and dothraki invasion, instead invaded West because their Kingdoms didn't suck so much.

Fast forward 300 year or so and they killed most their own dragons through civil war, trying to keep them in captivity and through waning of magic. They are essentially so inbred that they're basically all mentally unstable and by all rights, have crossed the threshold where average human should be unable to reproduce.

Anyway, one of these kings got kidnapped by some rebels and went off the deep end. We call him he mad king now and he basically fucked his entire dynasty by burning alive the guys who demanded Rhaegar return the girl he kidnapped.

These guys were an alliance of 4 most powerful houses in the continent so their relatives fucked up this King in battle because Targs literally had no friends outside their inner circle.

Whether or not Lyanna was raped or not, well the show paints a pretty picture, but being kept in a tower in middle of a desert while your father burns alive your lover's relatives and demands extinction of their family line, that hardly implies consent seeing it was Jaime, not Rhaegar who actually put the Mad King to ground.
>>
>>4456581
If you only watched the show, only season 1 was completely canon, season 2 was loosely canon and from there on the people writing the show just went with hollywood tropes, favoring narrative over consistency.

Does the obsidian glass looks like a promising magic alternative?
>>
>>4456812
Pyromancers in Essos, the kind that can control flames to limited degree, can actually ignite magical flames inside Dragonglass.

What you do is a bit different as it's kinda brute forcing a similar reaction through the use of electrical fields and harmonic resonance, but it doesn't seem to have any actual mystical properties unlike say, igniting a glass candle does. It just burns the obsidian and only naturally occurring obsidian.

Glass candles, being made of Obsidian by the Valyrians allow a practitioner to scry over vast distances and some say even communicate using them.

The methods of how to do this are lost to history and the last person to pull off that stunt was Maester Marwyn who is rumored to hold strange and foreign gods.

Obsidian is at the very least, a magically reactive material. Of course, when it comes to technology, by 1920, we already surpassed most of Valyrian magic through scientific means.

The way Obsidian works for you is that it's essentially a stable nuclear power source without worry of exploding.

You can build engines on the stuff that need maintenance before they need refueling as they can run on for years until you need to replace the obsidian fuel source.

>You leave a good impression on the court of King's Landing you cool cat.

[1/3]

The King, true to his word, brought the matter to his Hand, Jon Arryn, who was very intrigued about the prospect of this idea of yours to build a canal uniting east and west, and the notion that the crown would not need to spend a single copper in order to see this realized, only to give you the go-ahead to do so.

Big question and a hitch in the notion was of course Lord Eddard Stark himself, a good friend to the King and fostered by the hand himself when both the King and the Lord of the North were children. Nevertheless, you made the advantages of the success of this project plainly clear to him, stating that not only would the nation as a whole benefit from a circular trade-route, most of all the North itself.

The Ironborn would have an alternative to raiding by plying their trade in the east. The value of the crannogmen's lands would skyrocket, allowing them to rent it or develop it alongside a major trade route. West coast lords will get access to eastern markets, east coast lord will get access to western markets.

If successful, all of Westeros would be encompassed under a single, great trade-zone, making for a far more robust domestic economy for the nation at the cost of minor infringement on the lands of crannogmen, which you would be more than happy to compensate for generously, as well as invite them to planning on which path would be the best for the canal.

After assuring them on your confidence on being able to pull this off and aquire necessary resources should you run out of money, much to the doubt of the Master of Coin, they saw no reason not to grant you the right to try it on the caveat that you are to consult Lord Eddard Stark as well as the lords living on the land you seek to build upon.

You were also granted the right to found a Knighthood order as recognition of your deeds in the east, as well as a city charter, which was largely seen as fairly inconsequential as your "City" was on a bog without access to good farmland and had less than 5000 people living on it.

Nevertheless, granted it was and the news of the ownership of the Hammer of the Waters passing into the hands of the Crown did not take long to circulate. In fact, now that it was official in crown hands, it was being toted as a full fledged propaganda tool and a wonder weapon.

You would train the new crew, hand picked by the master of ships himself as your men would return to Port Maw whilst delivering various cargo to White Harbor including mail. Your brother Rickar, was naturally selected to serve as an officer aboard this vessel.

Most of the extra ammunition was left behind in Dragonstone, making room for whatever extra stockpiles of powder you could load to the ship at Port Maw. Whilst doing so, under as much secrecy as you could pull off, you explained Stannis about the one extra type of ammunition you neglected to mention before, emphasizing to only use if necessary.
>>
[2/3]

You also took the opportunity to take a whole bunch of Dragonglass with you and making a forward payment worth of 2900 gold for him, most of which will be fetched by a later date when you'd find the time to do so and when they'd bother to quarry it. Needless to say, the quantity of dragonglass you own is tremendous, albeit largely still unquarried, you could build a castle out of the stuff, thus resolving your fuel issues with one fell swoop.

>Current treasury: 200 000g (-10 000g owed to Starks)

The discussion with your family however... Well, that didn't go as smoothly as your silver tongued dealings with the highest political echelons of this nation.

"Gods above, what in the Seven Hells were you thinking? You gave away your ship to pursue another loony scheme?" Your mother yells at you shocked.

"Oh come on, I can always make another Hammer. Sure, it'll probably take years for another hull, but the first rule of being dealmaking is to sell things when your goods are most valuable."

"How exactly do you plan to dig a canal through 200 miles of swamp?"

"Well, actually it's closer to 300 to 400 miles depending on where the route is going to go. Anyway, if I do pull it off, that means our house will be moving straight up to top, becoming one of the greatest houses in Westeros in terms of power and influence."

"And what if you bankrupt yourself with this before finishing? Did you even think of that?"

"I've more than a few ways to squeeze some extra funding if I need it, albeit I doubt it'll come to that."

Your mother gives a frustrated sigh.

"So, what about this Knighthood order, what do you plan with that?"

"I reckoned it would be a good way to create a more motivated fighting force. After all, I'm pretty famous, so if I make a knighthood order and market it the right way, a lot of people will do anything for an opportunity to join my ranks. It also lets me experiment with certain forms of organization as well."

"And that's all?"

"Well... maybe?"

"Maybe!?" She repeats with some outrage

"Look, I'm going to let you in on a secret, I don't really plan most of this stuff, I just wing it as I go."

"Oh gods above."

"Okay, maybe I plan a little bit occasionally, but that doesn't count because it's honestly more a hobby. Anyway, I do need to develop my lands a bit further to pull it off, but hey, I've got the money."

And so, your ship took off to it's return voyage home with your brother and your mother aboard, former of which you are expected to train on how to run this ship.

You made a mental note on things you needed to do once you got home.

- Pay back your loan to Starks
- Begin a rapid mechanization of your industries
- Revamp the whole legal structure of your lands
- Figure out the specifics on what you wish to do with the Knighthood order
- Build up your military might
- Negotiate the canal route with Eddard Stark and Crannogmen
- Find a wife to marry

Those of course, would need to wait till you made it back home. Oh, how they'll gaze with wonder when the Obsidian engines begin to be mass produced. You've acquired all the materials, knowhow and authority needed for kicking everything into overdrive.

Soon, your lands will undergo a tremendous change.

What is that you actually plan for the Knighthood Order?

SpecOps, scientists and commanders to turn any shitshow into a favourable outcome. Not only would we be collecting the bets and brightest from around the continent but we would be forging an institution capable of operating by itself in line with our designs. We can always get more pilots or shorties to fill tanks, we can not easily get the cream of the crop.

You mean operators, engineers and commanders, with the operator part mandatory before specializing in one of the other two.
Got to keep it martially relevant. Maybe some meatball medicine.

Siege and military engineering will be a lot more palatable and relevant to a knightly order. Going half maester won't.

Tank does have the appeal of us leading and owning our own magitech Hammers Slammers.

Sadly Spec ops and Airpower can not hold objectives.

With the canal we can have navy be mobile artillery piece defensively and rule the coasts, while tanks pretty much means we will have the most powerful land force in the entire continent, white walkers included.

On the other hand special forces that also work as commanders can be used to be a full on officer corps we can use for other forces.

On the other hand, with the knights expected to own their own fucking gear, we can expect knights to contribute to the production of their equipment and wanting to eventually own it...
So, if we want a proper military force, going for tanks or air is probably the better choice, navy takes a long time to build and special forces dont need to fork up that much money compared to the two.

Having a mechanized infantry force provides us with the best of both the Fraternity and the Tanks.

We have a corps of highly mobile, highly trained, and highly motivated troops with enough firepower to take down anything in their way, enough armor to say "Fuck you" to anything they run up against, and enough mobility to completely outmaneuver any army they fight.

Afterall, why do we need tanks when there are no enemy tanks to begin with? Let's jump straight to mechanized infantry. Armored Fighting Vehicles with heavy weapons and troop carrying capabilities like the M2 Bradley or Soviet BMP.

Guys don't forget, we already have an army that we can give guns and tanks. Our knight order should be about power projection and prestige - what could be more prestigous than 'dragon riders'. Also with no surface-to-air weapons that aren't guns (which we control for the most part and are still ineffective...) an Air force is functionally immortal. Plus we need someone to drop our obsidian nuclear bombs.

>>4457453
No, I mean we have separate divisions doing separate things. Some are the operators, some are the people finding solutions to problems and making better gear for the operators and some are the commanders, diplomats and negotiators to control others.

Making some half-baked not!knights is pointless.

>>4457486

>>4457599
We dont have the manpower to field large armies. Furthermore, what are you even going to do with them? I am all for making some APCs, what we need a standing order of APCs for is beyond me.

>>4457664
We are still getting aircraft (and a not!Zeppelin is perhaps the biggest big dick move out there) but we lack the need for an elite airforce when the only place they can go is our lands and any purpose-built airstrips (which will need to be many indeed with the size of the continent).

Meanwhile getting a league of extraordinary gentlemen gives us tools both in peace and war, covert and overt, military and civilian etc. etc.. Lots and lots of tools for every occasion with the best possible quality.
>>
>>4457664
Also this thing.
>>
>>4457680
Yeah, actually I see what you mean. Until we NEED a standing army or airforce a flexible knight order is best... But I still have concerns about whether we'll be able to build up an airforce in time if we don't start now. Granted the landing srip bottleneck is super extreme for the time being, could seaplanes negate that?

I will switch from air force if it gets eliminated first to

Is that an airship airship carrier... 0__0
>>
>>4457710
Seaplanes do work to an extent but they even though they lack the fuel needs they are still constrained by other supply concerns. As to an air force, we can build some simple WW1 biplanes with little issue and a wing or two of 5 aircraft will be more than enough to secure our lands against any and all invaders. Cant really attack the castle when you are getting strafed 100 km out with the baggage train and supplies.

And while having it carry other craft is dumb, having an airship with infinite fuel (range) to jet around the world with is pretty neat. Also drop bombs in both the metaphorical and literal sense.
>>
>>4457719
Yeah I'm good with one or two squads of biplanes, that's pretty much all we need.
>>
>>4457599

>Cool Club Knightly order
>It's a slice of Life update!

The thrum of engines can be heard on the background as the ship steams towards the North. Your brother Rickar has been spending most of his time learning how to navigate and sail a ship from your boatswain Dan, a now knighted man and member of the original crew in the Long Night. Rickar has recently made it a habit to complain a lot about everything being difficult before passing out on his bed in the captain's quarters.

Your mother on the other hand has been bored out of her mind, spending most of her time reading your books, doing embroidery, insisting on board games and bothering you at every chance she gets. Being currently lazing at your bed in the ship, she viewed this an excellent chance to do so once again.

"Rickar is doing well with the ship, isn't he?" She opened up the discussion as she browsed through your bookshelf for yet another time.
"He's getting there slow and steady." You reply in a nonchalant manner as you lounge on your bed, watching at the open sea from your window.

"Still can't believe my two boys did what the Targaryens couldn't." She says as she takes a seat at your mahogany desk, settling with embroidery rather than reading.

"Always nice to be appreciated." You said as the ship creaked and swayed in the waves.

"Gods, I hate sailing. I am not looking forward to my trip back." She sighs in frustration

"Maybe I can arrange a faster way for you to go back home, we'll see." You half-heartedly reply

She raises her eyebrow
"You build the fastest ships in the Seven Kingdoms, have you something new back home then?"

"Not yet, per-say." you yawn whilst you enjoy the gentle swaying of the ship.
"Albeit I suppose I could try and cook up something."

"Knowing you, it's probably some sort of strange contraption again."
You reach out to a Dornish style lute, distinctly reminiscent of a guitar and started plucking some strings one it, playing a nostalgic tune.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P63vTKXDnFw

Your mother turns her head from her embroidery in surprise
"You're quite good with that thing. Since when did you start playing?"

You give her a smile.
"Oh, you know, learned it in my travels in the east."

She returns to her embroidery, enjoying the tune.
"I'm sure the ladies at court will appreciate the talent."
You shrug as you finish your tune.

"Come on then, play me something more. I'm bored out of my mind here."
Your mother asks as she does her needlework

Shining example of humanity. The best, brightist, and more honorable men only.

Use the Order to hunt non-humans all around the world to slowly push out the reach of the dark gods that lurk on the edges of the map.

Like Brindled Men, Others, whatever foul creature lies beneath the isle of Leng, and more people and more and more.

Humans are surrounded on all sides by foul horrors, and this brotherhood could help turn back their sickening plots and plans.

So you played, tune after tune. Songs undreamt and unheard brought to life through the dance of your fingers on stretched string, filling the cabin with alien melodies crafted by men who had not existed in this world.

Your mind drifted as the ship creaked on the waves. Lives you lived, the work you had done, the men you killed, the sisyphean efforts you had taken in exchange for skills and knowled and the dead-end looms in the distance.

Few skills were left in which you could be tutored in. The rock had reached it's hill. Be it in fighting, arts or statecraft, all men were woefully behind you. Things you would consider were mundane many would consider miraculous.

Cold, famine, poverty, sickness or war, none of them were something you could consider a credible threat. Even if dragons filled the skies or the dead flooded from the North, could they really be considered anything more than a minor challenge? A temporary distraction?

You had the power to shape the world, but to what ends? All of it will be ash in due time and the number of new skills to take with you to the next life have been dwindling rapidly as fewer and fewer men possess anything of value to you.

You also weren't overly fond of the idea of casting away morality in ruthless pursuit of dark arts. Blood, life and death were supposedly the keys of unlocking the secrets of magic, but without a functional theory or a method that can be reliably replicated, it would just be inhumane butchery.

Neither did you share the world's dragon obsession. You could reach the skies with an aircraft of your own making, so what need have you for a fire breathing lizard save for novelty? Far as you knew, hatching an egg required a human sacrifice anyway, which didn't exactly sit well with you.

As you lounged in your bed, rich, famous and powerful after finishing your tune, your mother interrupted your thoughts by speaking out

"You could have given Rhaegar a run for his money with how you play."
"I am having hard time taking that as a compliment." You give her a blunt reply
"Well, who else was as famous for his musical talents?" She asks
You sigh and reply
"He was born with his fame, the fact he played music was coincidental."
Then the door slammed itself open and without a knock, Rickar entered, exhausted and with an annoyed look on his face.
"I see you've been taking it easy when I was working my ass off."
He states as he plunders your cabinet for drink and rations.

You shrugged and gave a nonchalant reply
"It's about time you learned how real men earn their living. When you know how to sail, you never go hungry come summer come winter."
He looks back to you annoyed as you still are lounging at your bed.
>>
[2/2]

"Everything is easy for Arthur as usual." He says rolling his eyes
"I just make it look easy." You reply as you rouse yourself from your lounging position.
"Besides, I didn't hear you complaining when I hauled your ass around the seven kingdoms and it's not like the narrow sea is hard to navigate so long as you know the cardinal directions since you can largely follow a coastline. Everything else is basically just looking out for shallows, stormy clouds and making sure your supplies don't run out." You point out

"You forgot the part about actually controlling the ship." Rickar states
"It's a team effort, always has been. Of course, you can just run it on steam as well and it is a lot easier. I did draft some user manuals didn't I?"
He scoffs and begins digging into your rations
"Come on, this is stuff you need to learn."

"Perhaps it's better you went to check on the crew a bit Arthur? Make sure they are doing what they're supposed to." Your mother interjects

You stretched your arms and went to the top deck whilst Rickar had his little tantrum. The evening wind was a bit chilly and you saw the mountains of the vale in distance.

The ship was well on its way back home and the crew was in high spirits. Well, the original crew at least. The lads on marine duty had taken to guarding their plunder quite seriously and had invited some envy from the King's men who were eager for their own adventures to start on this ship.

Some of them were familiar faces from Long Night, but most were either from Stormlands or Dragonstone, none really had questionable backgrounds.

According to Ser Dan, the honor to serve aboard the hammer whilst flying the King's colors was seen as something most in the royal fleet aspired towards when the opportunity presented itself. Apparently, everyone wanted to be a gunner or an officer.

Rickar himself was serving as an acting captain for the return journey, his command to be relieved when the ship becomes the crown's flagship officially, after which he will be quite redundant for the conflict.

Some of your officers would also remain to make sure the new crew was fully trained before returning to your lands. An inconvenience for them, true, but seeing they were filthy rich thanks to you, they didn't dare to refuse.

After two more days of sailing, you finally reached your destination, question is, did you go straight home or drop by white harbor first, making sure the mail got delivered before handing command off to Rickar completely?

[1/2]

The alabaster jewel rose in the distance. White Harbor the one and only true city in this part of the world. Smaller and more ordered than the King's Landing. Your craft completed this voyage in less than a week, a tremendous speed by the reasoning of your average mariner.

The familiar shipyards which had given birth to this vessel were at full speed birthing sister ships and the docks were extraordinarily busy as outdated warships were being loaded with supplies.

The Black, Green and Gold of your colors as well as the Golds and Blacks of Baratheons roused the immediate attentions of the dock authority whom immediately took to your vessel and guided it to Manderly's very own private portion of the harbor. A sign of honor as it were normally reserved for the most prestigious guests and the ruling house.

You decided to take this rare opportunity and teach your younger brother how to park the steamer, to which he to his credit, took extremely seriously, moving at a snail's pace to get it into position whilst being extremely nervous.

He had undergone several changes throughout this trip. First he was jaded man who rejected the corruption of his church, then cocksure and drunk on victory, then insecure when given responsibility and finally, at the end of the tunnel, a salty seadog's demeanor had begun to rub on him as he was slowly forging his own identity at the helm of your ship.

He was still insecure, but he was slowly beginning to toughen up. He carried himself differently and his physique was also starting to change, albeit slightly. Fat from his sedentary lifestyle had begun to drain and he wore his clothing in a far more practical manner.

"Smooth as butter. What's the next step Ser Rickar?" Your boatswain asks
"Secure the ship?" He asks and receives a nod in return
"Grab the lines and secure the ship!" The men, already expecting the command jumped the ship as their shipmates threw the thick ropes to them, fastening the vessel at the docks.
"Now, you'll need to release the pressure and we're done."
The hissing sound of steam being released filled the air as you made your way to the side to hail the reception where the Merman's guards stood with a loosely familiar looking man.

"Ser Wendel, how gracious of you to receive us unannounced and on such a short notice!" You shout
"We've heard many strange tales of you as of late! Some said you were dead by assassin's poison!" He bellows
"I got better!" You respond nonchalantly
"And what brings you to White Harbor? Are you here to join the muster?" He asked
"Just delivering some mail and going to Port Maw top up on ammunition and training the crew for the King's new flagship. Could do with a warm meal if you won't mind us disembarking?" You told him
"I wouldn't dare to refuse. You are free to White Harbor Lord Arthur."
>>
[2/2]

A ramp was lowered and you went down with a small squad of your marines and your family, finally climbing ashore after days at sea.
"Ser Wendel Manderly, meet my brother Rickar Tallon and my mother, Bella Norcross."
"Well met Tallons of south!" He boomed to your family. "House Manderly extends his hospitality to your whole family. My father has been waiting for a chance to talk with you Lord Arthur."
"And I am be happy to receive the hospitality of your house."
You respond
"To New Castle then!" He bellows as the servants guide you to a carriage which is flanked by both Manderly men as well as your marines with their muskets as you enter it.
And so, the carriage took off towards the Merman's court.

Dawn was the magic sword of the Daynes, wielded by Arthur Dayne who fucking butchered most of the party of Ned Stark guarding the Tower of Joy on the orders of Rhaegar Targeryen where Lyanna Stark died.

Dawn is made out of Starmetal and a singular sword in westeros, glowing white and all that.

tl;dr Dawn anything is a bad PR and political name because of who used Dawn, who sits on the Iron throne and who is our fucking direct liege lord.

>>4464856
Because a term can only ever have one meaning and use. Best you get is some queer looks at the start. An actual argument is it being wishy-washy bland but I dont see that being the case. Symbolic enough and unless we start making references to star metal and how awesome Dayne was when he butchered Stark's gang its a moot point.

"So, Ser Wendel, it's been a while since my last visit to here. I hope your father isn't still pissed I gypped him a bit on the iron."

You chatted with the knight who was riding alongside the carriage, this one possessing an actual roof and shutters which obscured the view to outside world if so desired.

"That was certainly a thing you did!" He laughs
"Course, when tales started coming in from south and everyone wanting these new ships of ours, he's been all smiles." He replied in a merry, booking voice
"Since on the subject, just between us, how much of your adventure was true?" he said, trying to lower his voice, but not by much.

You smirk
"Well I don't know what you've heard, but we did go to the Free Cities and sunk more ships than Balon Greyjoy at Lannisport before they were convinced to my line of thinking. We did this in Myr and Tyrosh, but by the time we reached Lys, they capitulated without fight."
"Oh, and they gave me a couple Valyrian Steel blades too."
You said as you unsheathed your blade a bit, revealing the telltale pattern.

"Seven Hells!" He a bellows "You really did cover yourself in glory!"

You chuckle and give your facetious reply
"You know you've made it in high society when you start falling asleep when you listen the heralds list your titles. Lord Mayor of Port Maw, Knight of the Realm, Grand Master of the Order of the New Dawn, Paragon of Divine Virtue, Acolyte of 21 Links, Castigator of Three Cities and Liberator of Thousands... and so on."
You lower your voice and continue
"I'll be honest, the novelty of it wore out a lot quicker than you'd have expected."

He scoffs, letting out this sort of snorting, nasal burst of laughter

As the carriage rode on, you talked about your adventures in an over the top manner, a fantastical tale of two brothers, one a supreme gentleman, a pinnacle of cultivation, refinement and etiquette along with his younger brothers serving as his trusty sidekick.

"And then he said, 'Oh gee-whizz Arthur, what are we going to do, the culprits are hiding behind a massive fleet! to which I said, 'Fear not my trusty companion! We'll give these ruffians a good thrashing what-ho!' to which he replied, 'But we'se outnumbered hunnerd-to-one!' at that very moment I realized my error 'Good gods! You are right ol'buddy-ol'chum! It's scarcely a fair fight! We must inform the enemy commander immediately of this mistake, I am sure he is quite embarrassed to bring such a paltry force.'"

"And so, we invited the admiral of our foemen aboard for a talk, and he was quite the refined gentleman. He saw my point of view did indeed agree that a hundred ships was far too little, so he brought in additional nine hundred as requested, truly good sport he was."
"As was customary, we flipped a coin whom would deal the first blow, I lost, but the good admiral insisted that no, I was the guest, so naturally I should have the honors of the first blow. We fought for hours, stopping only for tea, biscuits, occasional bathroom break and whenever you needed to fix your belt so as to keep things modest. We didn't after all want someone with their dangling parts out, after all, there might have been children watching and god forbid some women might have snuck in dressed as men!"
"After a good game war the judges ruled that I won by scoring the most points and that the championship trophy should go to me. Brief ceremony and some drinks later, the admiral said he'd look into it, and indeed, the culprits were found shortly afterwards, being given a stern talking to with the missing people being returned back home! ...and that was the story of how the Tallon brothers solved the mystery of the missing children."

"Arthur..." Rickar speaks out
"That story was so full of shit I don't even know where to begin."

"Harumph Good Ser! It had all the elements a good mystery novel needs!" You replied insulted

"Except the truth." he says rolling his eyed
"Truth is a crutch used by less talented authors." you snootily point out

Wendel roars in laughter "Two stones of horseshit for every spoonful of truth, but damned if it wasn't entertaining!"

"Did you have to make me look like a simpering sidekick in the story?" Rickar asks
"You can always pay bards and mummers to make the sort of songs and stories you like. I am just wagging my gums here."

As you were about to continue bickering, you reached the courtyard of the Manderly castle-home and were lead out of the carriage.
>>
[3/3]

As most every building in white harbor, neither underlying woodwork nor bricks could be seen in plain sight as the whole thing was covered in whitewash saves, giving it a very clean look, which was a stark contrast to the smell of the city itself.

Upon your entry, you were immediately granted guest rights with salt and bread as was custom. After few minutes of waiting, you were received and lead to the Merman's court where he sat on his throne.

As you make your approach, the herald announces you and your family with their, and your full titles.

"Of all the Lords to show up here first, you were the last one I expected. I had heard you were killed." He says as his eyes evaluate you.
"I got better. Also, I've brought some mail from King's Landing. I've left the bag with your chamberlain." you reply to him in a fairly casual manner
"Meet my family, here's my mother, Bella Norcross and by younger brother, Rickar Tallon."

After exchanging courtesies with your famik, the fat lord turned to you.

"I've some business to talk with you Lord Tallon when you've the time, but that can wait till dinner. I take it you're here to join the muster? As you see, you're the first one here. Even Lord Stark isn't due to arrive save for few days and we're due to host the fleet the crown asked for us."

"Not exactly. Me and my men have been given different duties by the crown. We are to train the crew to crown's new flagship, to top it off on ammunition and to resume our arms production. My brother and my officers will be remaining in service of the ship for duration of the operation."

He looks at you, puzzled
"After all that effort, the crown made you give up your ship?"

"Not exactly, I was given a certain land grant to go with it, but the details I need to talk out with Lord Stark. Anyway, presuming this deal goes through, I'll be buying a lot more things from your city."

"Well, we can talk more about that later. You must be weary from your travels and I've work enough sorting out this business with the fleet muster and so on. Hospitality of my city and my castle are yours."
You have some time until the dinner with lord Wyman, what do?

You make your way to the markets with your guards and your family. The air is thick with the smell of fish which served to cover up the stench of human refuse. Fragrant, dried flower were used by the locals help combat the odor of daily life, an essential service which was provided by flower girls.

The fashion of the city was rugged even as the alabaster architecture was more refined. Woven beards, cunningly crafted leathers, linens and woolen tunics, not unlike those of norsemen of medieval europe. It was a melting pot of the northern and southern world in which the cultures of Andals and first men had been interwoven in a curious fashion.

One of Manderly's men which you had taken as a guide lead you to a highly regarded clothier, a family renowned for generations of excellence in the business of leather working, one of the oldest in the city and best in the seven kingdoms.

Dismissing the apprentice shopkeep for the time being so you could do window-shopping, you had time to chat with your family as you tried on various coats, cloaks and hats.

"So, what's your first take on the white jewel of the North? Everything you expected?" You ask with a mildly facetious tone
"It's well... how do I put this. Not as big as I was expecting." Your mother replies politely as she examines the ermine coat
"The North is still untamed. Compared to Oldtown or King's Landing, sure, it's a fraction of the size, but also better managed. You'll not see many beggars or thieves here." You stated
"It is a lovely city for sure. And the Lord himself is quite wealthy and possesses two granddaughters. Given any thought on the matter?" Your mother inquires
"Eh... Bit young aren't they? I mean isn't the older one like 13 or 14? I know the custom with nobility often is 'if it bleeds, it breeds'-" You reply
"Where did you learn such vile language?" Your mother snaps
"I have a guy. But yes, I do hold myself to a higher standard than the talentless cradle snatchers nobility who play games of inheritance." You reply
"A bethrotal is an option" she states "Besides, it's a good match. Although I suppose if you know some other eligible women..."

It's not that you didn't know, there were however some complications with every option available.

Manderlys had the advantage of being fairly close and being fairly wealthy. They were however, not well and truly regarded as northerners even if highly regarded by Starks. You'd likely need to convince them to let you court the girl and arrange a bethrotal, but you had much to offer.

There was also your hunting buddy, Medger Cerwyn, though not rich, he had men and was highly regarded in the North. He had a daughter a year older than you. He was of course, landlocked, so there wouldn't be much trading going on.

Theoretically, the Mormonts also had their share of daughters, issue is getting there and your relationship with Lord Jorah is... well, to put it mildly, quite weird. It is hard to say how he would react if you showed your face at his door with intent to marry his cousins. There's also logistical issues as they are quite far away.

There's also the Sistermen living in the isles east of you. They're fairly impoverished, but that's not anything you can't fix so long as they have manpower. Albeit the parallels between their origins and the Shadow over Innsmouth are worrying. You never did find out how much inspiration GRRM took from HP Lovecraft, although worst case scenario, you do know the Elder Sign.

There's also the Crannogmen to the west. Marrying to whichever house holds the lands you need to build the canal over could help smooth things over tremendously. What resources, what economy and how much people they have is unknown as they tend to live on an uncharted are with their customs known only to few outsiders.

You did also know of certain clans north of Wolfswood, the ones that showed up in the books which were fairly obscure and unknown to rest of Westeros, but die-hard supporters of Lord Stark as well, but easily swayed for a worthy cause when one shows them due respect.

Any further names you'd have to probably look up details with your Maesters, but that is an option.

Manderly seems like the obvious option. Even if it would be a betrothal for a few years still. We dont really lack respect (even if in deed more than breeding) and manderly has the best pool of manpower around. Add to that his trade connections, fleets and soldiers and we should be able to forge quite a lucrative partnership out of this. And as fun as rustling Jorahs Jimmies would be, they are in the ass end of nowhere with little of value.
>>
>>4468532
None of them, just marry your job already and get on with it
>>
>>4468532
no matter what I find, they are either too young, married,in wrong areas and all of the above.
Dacey Mormont is the only choice as she is the perfect strong waifu with connections to Reach and North. In fact,we can out offer what ever dowries other houses can offer with their daughters. What we need we can buy and make larger profits. Also Dacey Mormont is around our age and extremely fit for a woman. She is also combat ready per say,and I can see her handle firearms with ease.

>Medger Cerwyn
Cerwyn is preferable. I'd take Manderly or Mormont if we must. I am certain it must be one of them however.

Cerwyn might not have that much potential for trade as it currently stands but given time we can expand the network of canals throughout the north and more specifically though his lands given his support. Further he represents the most respect-generating option as well as the most conventionally powerful (outside of money, where Manderly has him somewhat beat).

If we marry into his family, we gain not only the ear of one of Lord Stark's closest allies but further we gain the most land, population and resources to exploit or enhance with our technology in time. He's a slower growing but arguably most powerful option as we get railroads, canals and other facilities to process and transport material set up. Plus he's one of the most powerful northern lords in terms of military forces which means he secures us from anyone fucking with us.

Manderly is the option with immediate payoff, his city is close and thus his support is too. We can use his city to ease manufacturing of simpler goods and to ensure a lack of competition between our canal and White Harbour for control of incoming trade by presenting a unified front. Mormont is mostly a meme but the wife is arguably the highest quality and also Bear island is quite large, isolated and most importantly, entirely securable by naval power.
>>
>>4468532
>>4468549
i also support A Manderly marriage. When the canal is finished White Harbor will be one of the most important harbors in the world and they have plenty of manpower to fill our factories which is the one thing we are sorely lacking.
>>
>>4468715
It's quite impossible for you to dig a canal all the way up to Cerwyn lands. Even with the most modern technology we have available, the undertaking would be hardly be considered feasible.

They do have access to a river though.
>>
>>4468787
To be fair, I was meaning building multiple canals linking into that river. I doubt building a canal from the neck all that way north is remotely intelligent if for no other reason than the fact that outside the bog are loads of lords we'd need to convince to let us past. Far easier to just go around them for the most part and avoid the issue. Plus, I did include railroads as another facility to improve transport in combination with canals and I imagine you'll agree that is another feasible option for transport.

Broadly my point was Cerwyn's lands are currently inaccessible as a market because of them being quite so landlocked but with our canal-making to expand the reach of their river through their lands (as well as potentially enhancing the river's navigability) they'd be able to send far more of their resources via river and into the world market where it meets the sea (where we can access them).

Not to mention the potential for boats to travel up river past this point and perform trading directly with these lands. Throw in railroads here and there for particularly mountainous regions or to create a direct link between our lands and I imagine he would be the strongest option long term.
>>
does anyone else know a family branch from the starks aside from Karstark?

otherwise i'll vote for manderly so we can skip romance for four years and get assassinated in our wedding.
>>
>>4468810
Also it should be noted that the river me and QM are talking about is the one we're next to (along with White Harbour) so its not a long journey from our lands to theirs along it meaning even if we can't improve transport significantly (laughable given we've got steam engines and shit) it still isn't a long way away.

Cerwyn is the smart man's choice.

Dont need men, all his support is landlocked (as well as old-fashioned in mentality) and unless we are planning on relocating either all our shit or large swathes of his population, the manpower is also mostly inaccessible. No real point aside the political angle and thats already dealt with with the Canal.

The only "quality" she has is being the first picture of a waifu anon latched onto in his quest for some fleeting form of human attachement. She has 0 value.

Though I grant you this I would like to get her to move in to our castle. After we build Tallon Tower and leave the old castle as a museum it would be very prestigeous to own a live-in pet noble.
>>
>>4468909
>Sistermen
No, nope. Not one of the damn options I was talking about. I'm talking one of the interior northern lords not the island fish folk.

>>4468914
>Dont need men
Sure we do. The war of the Five Kings is probably going to happen unless we intervene which means sticking our neck out from our metaphorical shell of isolation and anti-socialness. Having a major lord's forces backing our own makes us much harder to fuck with. Further I don't know about you but I kinda plan on just making as much bullshit happen as possible and for that we will always need more men.

>all his support is landlocked
It's up the river our entire holdings are next to (the one that feeds into the Bite) and even assuming we take your point as accurate, that still doesn't change the fact his support is the greatest of all the options. The implication is often more effective than the action.

This is before mentioning that we've got engines that let you travel from King's landing to White Harbour in a week. We can easily recieve reinforcements and send them to him in a far shorter period than that should we begin producing steam ships (which we almost certainly will).

>unless we are planning on relocating either all our shit or large swathes of his population, the manpower is also mostly inaccessible
Further on this: not if we scatter various projects throughout his lands, QM's previously discussed that we can sell simpler inventions to other lords in order to then purchase them as we need. Like we did compasses with Lord Manderly for example.
>>
>>4468951
>Manderly
- Could be seen as "southerner marrying southerner" and thus a slight against the north.
- His main benefit is that we can use his city to make shit but we could do that anyway without marrying him so why bother?

>Mormonts
- Relatively minor northern house compared to Manderly and Cerwyn, their island is isolated and has no unique resources or industry
- Relatively low population, wealth and military power compared to basically every other option.
- Main benefit is fucking with Jorah even more.

>Sistermen
- Fishpeople physically to some degree. Benefit or malus, you choose.
- Poor AF, not really an issue but still.
- Frequently criminals, involved in raiding, piracy and smuggling to make money.
- Not exactly respected or powerful.

>Crannogmen
- They've little interest in trade, new fangled ideas or outsiders.
- I feel that first point is kinda reason enough.

>Cerwyn
- One of the strongest Northern bannermen, meaning he has the largest army to call on and thus the population, land and income to support them.
- Is very close to Stark and his family meaning that us marrying him grants us a degree of respect directly and the potential to use Cerwyn to support our plans.
- Actually likes us rather than Mormont who are afraid / confused, Sisters and Crannog who don't know us and Manderly who feels kinda indifferent if admittedly cheated over having to pay for the Hammer's cannons.
- Is one of the most respected northern lords which will rub off on us to some degree.
- Marriage option is actually the same age as us and can be used immediately.
- Believes and understands the power of guns, has done for a few years now since we hunted with him and 1-shot a bear. Will happily adopt our tech for the most part where we might need to convince other lords a bit harder.

Oh and because I feel I must mention this option, if only because it was a good meme:
>Dornish Princess Route
- Support is literally a continent away
- Provides little practical benefit
- Probably will piss off everyone
- Would involve building an airship
- Would be hilarious to do
>>
>>4468992
Why fight when you can have others do it for you? Furthermore, if its 5K then the entire Norf FC would be allies.

As compared to Manderly whos entire powerbase is along the coast (mostly in WH) Cerwyn is spread over all of his land. This means that connecting to him will be a nightmare. Similar with any industry we build. Either we need to centralise him (the aforementioned mass displacement) or we will be building ludicrous amounts of infrastructure. Manderly is already set up for what we need.

Very little point to even consider Cerwyn. What eaxctly do you want his political capital for anyway, considering that Manderly is well respected by Stark?
>>
>>4469018
>Why fight when you can have others do it for you?
I mean ain't that what I'm saying? That this guy'd provide the most non-us fighting power? I was also meaning soft power in terms of economic, financial and political power mind you but still.

>Furthermore, if its 5K then the entire Norf FC would be allies.
Fair point.

>Manderly is already set up for what we need.
I'd point out as I've said in multiple posts, we can use Manderly's primary benefit (at least as I see it) of an urban production centre without marrying him. In fact he might even welcome it since it would provide him with yet more power and respect by enhancing White Harbour. If we can get milk for free, why buy the cow?

>What eaxctly do you want his political capital for anyway, considering that Manderly is well respected by Stark?
I swear QM had commented on this somewhere but I can't find it. My thought was Cerwyn was closer to Stark than Manderly. As to what I'd want his support for? I'm of the general presumption that we're going to be building more canals as well as other projects which would be made far easier by having Stark on our side.
>>
QM has confirmed in discord that Cerwyn is 5 days away and can be reached in the same day as you set off with our tech. Even if we assume that moving through most of his land is far slower? With reasonable investment in the form of canals by us we can make transport across his lands to the river or King's Road very quick.
>>
>>4468991
She's the last surviving member of the people who last owned our land. If we're trying to legitimise ourselves as kosher northerners we could do a lot worse than marry into the remains of house Fullaxe.
>>
>>4469148
Ooh, ooh; while I think about it, didn't we promise to hunt down the men who killed her family? What happened to that?
>>
>>4468532
>> Do you have any plans in regards to whom you'd like to ally yourself with?
I just wanna marry someone not from the desolate and unimportant north.
No reason to not look for a bride across the Narrow sea, like from Braavos to help secure the reach of our ships.
>>
>>4468951
Freys are not allied with the Manderlys and are unlikely to ever be so in this timeline unless something goes horridly wrong.
>>
>>4469068
Cerwyns are one of the big old Northern houses and well respected. Of course, much like Manderly, they both are kinda Stark brownnosers.

They both hold a different role in same economic zone winterfell is linked to through the river trade.
>>
>>4469151
They either died in Stannis' pirate purge or got away. Identification could not be made on the culprits due to decomposition and lack of interest by Stannis to haul every head he took preserved to your lands.

A bounty has been put for anyone who can bring them to justice, but so far, the trail is cold and your secret police have not discovered any attempts of them to try and return to the crime scene.

None of the things they looted never ended back to your lands or to White Harbor markets.
>>
>>4469215
That's unfortunate.
>>
>>4468951
There is Desmera Redwyne i think and ... Asha Greyjoy on the sea power front.

With the Redwynes are probably gain the least benefit from the canal - that is however a way to get them on board and not make them position against us. The issue are the hostages in Kings landing of her brothers and house heirs, and Stannis being blockaded by Redwynes.

The weird one, Greyjoy, we fucked them hard during the rebellion, we dabbed on them with the Hammer, and they are positioned to the Westerlands in the weird way to be one of the most advantaged from the canal if they can be channeled right. The problem, Theon is being turend into a greenlander hostage to the North, Balon and Euron are not the ones do to what we would want and they would Balon would not want to lose the last of his two living children to the north.
The up is we get a casus belli when Balon croaks to install Asha.... but as we know controling the iron island as an outsider is going to be a bitch and a half, but the stunt with the Long Night and the Hammer of Waters might mitigate that.

Westerlands wife in the Lannister line is politically iffy in the North considering all things but if all males get deaded...

Margery Tyrell and Arianne Martell are not going to happen due to politics.

These are the non northern major candidates we could play for.
I for one prefer a northern house.

Crannogmen are a very interesting option in my mind as they are the very antithesis of our style, close by and we want to go through most of their lands, plus their knowledge of swamps are going to be very important, as well as the fact that we are going to probably have the longest land border with them.

Manderly is also another one i like for simply solidifying a core of former reacher men - but that i think that is enough in and of itself. good business, shared culture, our kids can be betrothed.
>>
so i just checked the this map

https://quartermaester.info/

and cerwyn is close to a small river, i guess we can help widen it too

changing my vote to cerwyn
>>
Again friendly reminder that Cerwyn is spread thin across his whole lands while Manderly is centralised and with an already existing network. And while we could still operate businesses without a marriage it would be both easier and more efficient if we had the lord of White Harbour to handle it for us. Plus, I still do not see what use Cerwyns men are considering that we will face 0 invasions that wont already include the whole north as our allies. Compared to Manderlys fleets which are a tangible asset for trade, nevermind the security of the bay.
>>
>>4469148
She is also irrelevant with 0 boons to bring with her. We are already more legitimate than their entire line put together.
>>
>>4469148
we are never going to be kosher with what we aim to do and with what we have done.
They are one of the few kingdoms that due to their geography as a rule them not liking you is not going to impact you, unlike all the others.
we have to be passably tolerable, as in they have to actively search for your people to get in with their people and fuck some shit up.
The North are the siberian/canadian boonies.

But, these people are clannish - by my read so getting in with a clan of the old houses would be a good idea. Arguably, we already did the thing to become as glorious and famous or infamous as the founder of one of their old dynasties, but we do not have is the massive amount of investment in the north compared to said houses. yet.

If we want to get loyal people, getting some people to be half clannish to the Tallon house would ensure we have quite the long lasting dynasty as the workers and operators of the canal will be quite loyal compared to others.
>>4469796
Oh yeah. We are on the level of Bran the Builder, Lan the Clever, etc.
the thing is that while we personally have now glory and prestige out of the ass we are again at this moment lacking in hard assets.

Okay, so what I am seeing here is basically threefold situation here.

First is Manderly due to the obvious benefits of having a lot of manpower really close as well as having large markets and a teenage wife.

Second is Cerwyn. While they're a fair bit further away, they're also ancient allies of Starks with better connections with the inland houses. They also can only raise about half the levies Manderly can and his daughter is like 26.

Finally is the independents option. This is for your unexpected stuff like Northern clans, Crannogmen, trying to score a princess and things of that nature.

We can look into details later, but this vote will determine the general direction of what sort of waifu you going for.

"What is betrothal for 300, please?"

Though I agree that the wife in that case would not be able to handle tasks for a few years. On the up side the elder mermaid was shown to be crafty at intrigue and generally smart in the books. So its an investment that takes a while to pay off (unlike Manderly's other assets).

> Mystery box

You are Ashlyn Fenn, a proud daughter of the House of Fenn, learned in the ancient ways, the ways of old magic, of the leaves and wind, of the waters and soil.

Taught by witches and wisemen of my people. Kissed by fire and blessed by gods I was born a skinchanger, or so it was said. It was said that the dreams too would come to me in due time.

Working magics was a deed of great effort and in spite of my blessings, I cannot match the deeds of my elders, men such as Howland Reed who could make castles disappear on a whim. I had also not bonded with an animal, in spite of what was told of my abilities.

However, that changed recently, as I received a vision.
It seared itself deeply and vividly into my memories where it still burns to this day, smoldering like an ember that will not die. It was not as the wise men and women would say it would be. It was not symbolic with images and metaphors of things to come.

What I saw was something much more, something wonderful and terrible in equal measure. The coming of a man larger than life and burning as radiant as the sun.

I gripped the piece of paper in my hand which had started it all and wondered what sort of face did the man who wrote these words have.

I closed my eyes and remembered whilst walking towards the Hermit Lord's domain with bronze sword at my hip and spear in my hand, filled with purpose as my new companion perched itself on my shoulder, escorted by my father's trusted men.

https://youtu.be/HTbS8BEa1oI

If only for a brief moment, I had walked in a gilded city of light, world in which men soared the skies towards the stars, a city in which neither summer nor winter held dominion.

Blasphemous, terrifying and yet beautiful and wonderful beyond words. I am drawn to the idea of that alien city, like moth to a flame.

Towards the domains of the wizard of south who worked steel, thunder and fire into intricate works of war, offering their power to Kings and high Lords at tremendous expense.

Little did I know of him, save the mysterious letters which had showed up everywhere and of the rumors in which he had defeated three cities with a single ship and freed the slaves in those cities.

Was he the man in my visions? Or was he merely the first step in a long journey to come? I did not know. But after seeing what I had seen, there was no turning back.
I had to know if that undreamt city lied at the end of my journey.

Leaping from my shoulder, Pisha took flight, going swiftly for a mouse she had seen before gorging herself with her prey and returning at her familiar perch.

The sight of a the stone castle perched on a hill by he coast came to sight, an ancient stronghold, now with a new and mysterious master.
