There has always been a rite of passage into adulthood in your tribe. To earn one’s place in the lodgehouse and to cast off the name of ‘Child’ forever, you must receive the ash markings of the dead on your face and chest. Armed only with a flint knife, a length of rope, and four pieces of hardtack, you will enter the deep forest alone and unsupported. Once there, find prey worthy of the hunt, and kill it. Return before the complete passing of the moon, with a token crafted from your quarry’s flesh, fur and bones to return to life. You’d rather be dead than come back without a proper token, since death happens but once, while shame is eternal.

I call the votes around 01:00 UCT unless there is an overwhelming consensus, and have the update ready to go by 02:00 UCT. If there is changes to this pattern, I’ll post in the thread when it’s expected. Occasionally dice will need to be rolled in this quest when there is an element of chance in an action. The dice are roll under, Best of 3. Variations from the roll target are stepped in increments of 20. Crits override, with 1s being great, and 100s not so much. If you are performing a simple enough task, or have the correct tools for a moderate task, no rolls with be required.
>IE. Roll target for stabbing a deer with a spear is 65, since it’s in a trap. 50 is a grazing slash, 45 is a telling strike, 1 is a strike to the heart, 70 is shaving some of its fur off, and 100 is getting too close, getting gored by the buck’s antlers.

The obliterated track seemed to point eastwards. Picking up your gear, you start trailblazing to the east. It’s likely to provide more information than anything else you’ve picked up so far. Cutting markers into the trees with your knife and using the spear to flatten thistles and prod the surface along the way, you set down to blazing trail ahead.

After around four hours of breaking trail, you fish out a few more blackberries from your pouch. There hasn’t been much of interest so far. The ground looks bit loamy around here, with the dense tree cover starting to break up a bit overhead. It’s not really a clearing yet, but it looks like there is a lot of pioneer plants in the area. You recognize a few mushrooms poking through the earth as burn morels. This seems like an old burn, either from wildfire or a set fire.

The ground here is still rather soft, too soft to form distinct impressions. You see dents in the dirt that seem to go further SSE. It’s hard to tell, since they’re really shallow and crumbling. Either way, these plus the stumps of eaten mushrooms are a heartening sign. Doing a bit of quick math, you estimate it’s 2.5 hrs to the pool from here since you have a clear path to follow now. Squatting down to look at the depressions better, you ponder the next course of action.

Standing back up, you look around the burnt clearing. The sun is starting to get a bit lower in the sky, too low for your liking. It’s too far to make it to camp before nightfall, and even getting to the pool again will be cutting it close. Deciding to stay here for the night, you poke around until you find a deep enough depression for a good firepit. Picking up a few burnt branches and making a rough outline, you break up the old bird’s nest from a few days ago into a small pile of fluffy tinder. Taking two of the straighter sticks from the pile, you carve a fireboard and hand drill with your flint knife.

Feeding it with the deadfall in the area until the old charcoal catches, once the fire has been built to a stable size, you start to scrounge in the area for softer branches for a bed.

Picking away stones from a pleasant spot near the fire, you lay down an armload of pine boughs from the less fire-damaged area. Spreading them onto the loamy soil that is free from rocks now, you squat down and look over your gear. The flint knife is starting to get well used from the journey. It’ll be fine for a while yet, but it’s less robust than it was a week ago from the flaking you’ve done to keep it sharp. The spear is still in good order, and the flake you brought for a razor will be fine yet. There isn’t quite enough time to make a proper shelter, but you ‘ll be fine if you sleep near the base of the tree and keep an ear out for trouble. At least the smoke from the fire will keep mosquitoes away for tonight.

Stretching, you stand up from the small bed by the fire. Those clouds above are looking pretty heavy, and those few traces you’ve found are almost certainly going to be washed away with the few bout of rain. Picking up a brand from the fire and spreading some dirt over it so that it doesn’t burn out, you walk over to where the dents in the ground were.

Peering closely at them, your brow furrows in concentration. They’re too wide to be something hooved, and the pacing looks wrong for a canine. They seem to lead further south-south-east from the burn. Taking advantage of the waning daylight, you see them slightly stand out from the rest of the soil as darkened shadows.

Pressing onwards for around 20 minutes, you pause and feel your heartbeat pick up the pace. Thud-THUD, thud-THUD, thud-THUD. There, by an oak tree with a bunch of crushed acorns. Scat, and it’s fairly fresh. Squatting down, you prod it with a stick. It gives slightly, and breaking it apart, you see a few chunks of what looks like mushroom, mixed with seeds. It came this way, within the last couple of days. Three at the outside you figure. Hurrying back to the burn, you build the fire up and try to sleep. The adrenaline makes it a rough sleep.

Sneezing, you feel a tickle in the back of your throat. That, and the rumblings of an empty stomach does the thinking for you. Pushing the pile of bush aside so that you can find it again later and picking up the spear from it’s place by the tree, you start making the small trek back to the pool.

By the time you arrive at the pool, the rain has starting falling in earnest. The normally placid waters are churned up by the rain, turning a murky brown colour. The tang of silt is worse today, but it beats licking dew off of leaves. You make a mental note to turn the rabbit skin in the camp into a water bladder if you can get some sinew from some game.

Bending over and cutting the reed with the flake, harvesting a small pile of green shoots goes quickly. There’s still a lot of fresh growth here, and more will be coming along with the rains. Chewing on the roots, you look over the clearing and see tracks of deer that look to be heading northwest. Looks like an adult, probably a young buck since you don’t see fawn-sized prints following along.

I agree with this though I do wonder if it would be better to head back to camp now and come back for the deadfall and food tomorrow morning, plus then this afternoon I would get a chance to be dry(ish) and get more crafting done. The food should still be here tomorrow and I know this spot well enough, hopefully the weather will work with me a bit better then as well.

Though I'll go with foraging more here and then heading back if that's what you want as well.

Chewing on the root of a reed, you feel rain start running down your back from the leaves above. Swearing at the sudden burst of cold between the shoulderblades, you decide on heaging back to the camp. At least the lean-to has enough weight of roof to keep the rain off. That, and the thought of a warm meal cement the decision. Hefting the reeds under the left arm and using the spear as a walking stick in the right, you step off.

When you pass by those damned blackberry brambles, you notice more of them have ripened. You can’t see how much is ready without stopping, but there should at least be a day’s worth or so before they’re completely picked clean. Sidestepping and making a rude gesture to the outcropping you always trip over, you continue on the way to the camp.

When you arrive in the camp, your feet are sore and your arms are a bit numb from switching the weight between them for hours. Plopping down next to the pit, you feel a faint twinge of hope that there’ll be a coal left. Nothing. May as well build it up now before everything is soaked. Bending over to shelter the punk from the rain, you work up a small ember and use the last of the dry tinder on you to support it. By the time you feel the hunger pangs settle in, you have a fire going and set your shirt to dry from a bar in the lean-to.

After the fire is stable, you pull the anvil stone over, closer to the cover of the lean-to. It’s a bit heavy after being soaked from the rain, but it should still be abrasive enough to grind it down to a proper shape. To be on the safe side, you pull some of the wood ash out from the dry side of the fire with a branch, and scatter it over the surface of the stone. Taking a handful of berries from the stash to flavour some of the reed bulbs, you bend to your work.

The blank is a decent size, and will require the least amount of time to grind into a pick head. With that in mind, you grind and rub it against the anvil stone, occasionally adding more ash as needed. The wet anvil stone forms a gritty slurry with the stone dust and ash, making the grinding process a little faster than usual. Your hands are starting to cramp a bit around the end of the first hour when you finish getting the rough shape of it down.

Forming the groove around the centre is a bit more of a challenge. Usually you’d have a piece of granite or the like to rub against it, but all you have is more feldspar. It’s difficult to groove with the same material. Weighing the limited options available, you settle on using the edge of the anvil stone. It’ll take longer than usual and cause a lot of wear on it, but you can always find more trap rock at the defile. Getting a usable head is worth more in the end.

When the head is finally finished, you head to the stream and wipe the slurry off of your hands. Glancing over at the fish trap, you see a crayfish chewing on the guts. It won’t be super filling, but it’s better than nothing. Grabbing it before it can dart away, pressing the flake into its spine stops its wiggling.

Deciding to check on the snares as well, you’re less lucky. It looks like a rabbit got caught when you were out by the burn, but it got eaten ahead of you by a predator. The fur is ripped to pieces, bones are scattered, and a lot of the big chunks of meat are gone. Grumbling, you pick up the chunks and quickly bury them in the brush, marking it with 4 sticks in a pattern. A scavenger will probably dig them up, but if not, it may still be useful for bait later.

Cracking your knuckles to ease the soreness a little, you decide to get a frame done up for the rabbit hide. It won’t dry as nicely due to the rain and lack of salt, but if it gets started now, it should be ready for brain-tanning in a few days time if you rub wood ash into it in the morning. You walk over to a few of the saplings at the edge of the clearing that usually catch most of the sunlight with the axe and a flake.

Hacking down the branches and twigs for the first handful of feet off the ground, you take some of the creepers and lash two cross-braces of firewood to make a square frame. Heading back to the bundle of sodden fur, you take a chert point and pierce the edges in a few spots. Twining short lengths of creeper through it, you walk over to the frame. Pulling on it to stretch it as much as you could, you tie it into place. It’s not as tight as you’d like due to the lack of strong cordage, but it should suffice for a small piece of rawhide. After it’s secured, you rub the hide to peel off some of the last membranes on it. The hide is too delicate to take a flesher to it with the materials you have, so you’ll have to hand-pick it over in the morning. By the time you’re satisfied with it, night has fallen and the rain is still coming down. With that, you lay down to sleep.

When you wake up from a dreamless sleep, the rain has stopped drumming on the roof. The ground is muddy and gross, and the sky is a deep stone gray. It may still rain again today, since the clouds are still heavy with moisture. Spreading a handful of the warm wood ash over the hide and rubbing it in, you check over the snares. They’re empty, to your lack of surprise. You’ll likely have to move them again, because the scattered mess from the predator will have made the area reek of death. Moving over to the fish trap is a more pleasant surprise. It looks like a large pike got it’s head into the trap, and is thrashing around. Stabbing it in the gills with your knife, it slowly stops moving. The trap is a bit roughed up, but you’ll eat well with the fish in it tonight.

Hearing the fish sizzle away in the wrappings, you turn towards the pile of creepers at the foot of a nearby tree. Sighing, you decide to finally braid some of them into more cordage. It was always one of your least favourite jobs in the village, made worse now by not having someone to talk to. At least there, you were often chatting with Nadia and Jonas to pass the time. Here, the only company is the fish on the fire, and the crackling of coals.

Tying off a knot to secure the end, you start braiding the vines in a simple four strand plait. It’ll be sturdy enough for the simpler tasks at hand, plus it has the advantage of going quicker. Stopping briefly after the first foot to flick the fish onto the anvil stone to cool off, you continue braiding for most of the morning. Your thoughts wander as the repetitive motions of outside vine over top, inbetween opposite outside strands, twist, repeat occupy your hands. What sort of totem should I make? I could go with taking the paws, and wearing them as gloves and shoes. Maybe a necklace of teeth and claws. It’s pretty convincing, since I doubt the honey-eaters give them up willingly. If there isn’t too many holes, a fresh pelt would be the nicest.

With the faint scent of rain on the wind, and a few lazy drops starting to fall again across the stream, you finish one of the pieces of fish entirely, and bury the other with the berries. The reed wrapping should help mask the enticing smell and keep the dirt off of the flesh.

Sneezing slightly, you happen to glance at the digging stick. Since you have a head for it, and a fresh supply of decent rope, you settle on fixing the feldspar pick head to it for now. You slice and tie off a shorter length off of the fresh cordage, and quickly tie it off before the whole braid unravels. Taking it all under the roof of the lean-to, you bend to the task.

Taking up the knife, you score the bark at the digging end of the stick. Peeling away the bark, you set a small groove in it with the blade. Taking up a sturdy hunk of rock, you hammer on the feldspar chisel until you have a narrow slot into the first ring of the stick. Setting the chisel aside, you flick out a coal from the fire with the knife. Balancing it on the flat, you set it into the slot and blow on it. Over the course of the next hour, the coal slowly works its way through the haft until it comes out the other side. The rain starts up again, and the drumming is a nice backdrop to the sound of hissing as raindrops hit the coals.

Taking up the oblong pick head, you fix it into the socket. Once it is secured in place, you wind rope all around the head, tying off a clove hitch below to lash it all together. Stepping out to the muddy clearing, you give it an experimental swing into the dirt. The pick sinks deeply into the earth, and pulls up a nice hunk of earth with ease. You figure that it will cut down the time needed for digging by a substantial margin.

Setting the pick aside, you take the small flaker you have in hand and re-sharpen your tools. Everything is sharp enough to work for a while, but you’ll want a better flaker to keep them going well. You could also use some more resources, as hammering on the chisel with a rock rather than a sturdy piece of wood was frustrating to deal with. Grabbing a drink of water from the stream, you take a quick break to rub a bit more ash on the hide again as the rain plasters your hair to your scalp and neck.

Moving some of the sodden hair out of your eyes and wiping the ashes onto your legs, you decide now is as good as time as any to get the snares moved. The rain coming down will help mask your smell from the area, and with the ash drying off your palms slightly, you can still have a decent grip on the cordage. Walking over to the location where the snares are, you go to work.

It doesn’t take long to remove the short lengths of cord from the various branches and twigs you have set up. What takes a long time is finding game trails to set them at and signs of squirrel spoor at the base of trees. You’ve dealt a fair hit to the population of small game near the campsite. Eventually though, you find a small trail that leads along the bushline. There’s a few pawprints of rabbit and the tell-tale s-curve of a wood rat on the move. In addition, you see a few trees that have a small pile of pinecone debris, indicating squirrels, as well as the stripped bark of a porcupine’s feeding. So long as you don’t get too greedy, or leave them dead too long, you can probably bag a decent supply of meat here.

When you finish re-setting the snares, you head over to the inverted cone fish trap you had set up. That thrashing pike this morning loosened up a lot of the cords securing it together. Pulling it out of the water, you undo and redo the lashings, securing the bars and cone back in place. Placing the guts back into it as you set it in the water, you feel as though the fish are slowly becoming a bit more wary of the area. Either way, by the time they completely wise up, you should be having a stomach full of BRUN’s meat, surrounded by your loved ones at the village as you regale the tale of how you defeated him.

Heading back over to the lean-to so that the rain stays off your back, you sit back down on the bed for a brief break. The light is getting a shade dimmer as the afternoon stretches into evening, and the rain looks to be slowing down a little. Hopefully it lets up in the night, so that you don’t have to worry about your knife slipping while it’s wet out.

Looking over the tools that you have at hand, in the camp, and inside your pouch, you come to a conclusion. You’re sick and tired of having all these tools to work with, but no way of keeping them in a functional state. Your Grandfather would have laughed long and hard seeing you maintain an edge using the thigh bone of a rabbit. Silly hare, why would you trust another hare to keep your blade sharp and hale? Deer won’t betray you, even if they leave their young behind to the grey hunters to live another day.

Taking his advice in hand, you head northwards from the campsite. You notice that the buck’s tracks went this way, and maybe you can find a fresh shed to work with in this direction. At the very least, antler is more robust than thigh bones, and can provide a solid flaker amongst other tools. With this in mind, you try and keep an eye open as you walk amongst the oaks, elm and pine trees.

Eventually you get fed up of looking for sheds in the trees. 2 hours of daylight, wasted by wandering through the woods and tripping over roots and glaring at poisonous mushrooms. Finally, you turn your gaze southwards towards the camp. There, wide out in the open and plainly obvious to see, you notice a 5-point buck shed hanging from the trees You swear under your breath at the sight of it. Merciful ancestors, why do you place a visage like this before my eyes as I venture through the woods? The howl of wind through the trees is your only response.

IIRC the anvil stone is @ the campsite, so this should be done now and then other stuff can be done after the move.

Stretching widely, you choose to sleep early tonight. It’s been a long day with the rain drizzling downwards, and the constant sniffling of your nose is getting on your nerves. Last thing I need is to be laid up for a few days sick. Can’t really have warm soup to clear out a cold without a bowl after all. With this in mind, you chew on the end of a cattail as you stare into the flames. Eventually, you nod off and go to sleep, with the sizzle of rain on coals putting you to rest.

You wake up in the morning with a sneeze and a start. Something seems a bit off while you wipe the sleep from your eyes. Thank the Maker, the rain has stopped. It looks like it’ll be gone for good now too, with the clouds breaking like that. Scratching your hip as you walk over to the stream, you check over your trap lines. There’s a trout caught in the cone trap, and a squirrel hanging from the snares. Cleaning them and burying the offal with the others, you set them on sticks to cook by the fire as you go to work on the antler.

Taking the shed in hand and placing it on the anvil stone, you press the chisel along the main branch by a long tine. Bringing down another rock on it heavily, you snap it off without splintering the rest of the antler. Taking the tine, you starting using the anvil stone to grind and shape the points. By the time the morning meal was cooked through, you have the horn flaker shaved down and slotted into a stick. Satisfied, you take the old rabbit bone flaker you were using and toss it into the flames, and put the new one into your pouch alongside your knife.

Yes, the cordage will be re-used. It's used for moving the equipment by tying everything into a tight bundle with a length of cordage at either end of it, secured with a knot and taking up the running ends in your off-hand. Once at the burn, you undo the knot to release the bundle, and re-coil it back up. If you didn't have two long lengths of cordage, you wouldn't be able to bring nearly as much tools with you.

The 1' of cordage used in the knife construction is cut off from the creeper cordage, split into two twisted, and wrapped around the base of the knife as a grip. You would re-use the sisal wrapping from the flint knife if it was broken, but it'd be better to have two knives, switching out the usage to reduce wear on the edges. Plus, some actions work easier with multiple blades, and knives are better for those tasks than razor flakes, as you can exert more force on a knife without splintering it.

Thinking in depth, the old burn site is probably the best location you can find to start getting ready to trap a honey-eater. As such, you’ll want to start moving a lot of the heavier tools there, so that you can work without pause to prepare the killing field ahead. Nodding to yourself, you gather up the pick and two spears, and lay them flat on the ground. Taking the shorter stakes and placing them around the outside, about 2/3rds of the way below the heads, you take up the two long lengths of cordage free in the camp. Tying the bundle together tightly and securing it with a figure 8 knot, you test the heft over your shoulders. Smearing a bit more of the warm ash on the hide and burying the charcoals beneath a mound of dirt, you take up the bundle and small tools you have packed into your pouch, and set off.

There’s a lovely trill of birdsong in the trees by the time you get near the pool. There, you see fresh tracks of wildlife, notably a porcupine’s swishing path and the small handprints of a raccoon. Stopping to take a quick break and ease some of the tension in your shoulders, you cup some of the silty water into your mouth. It’s not as nice as upstream by the camp, but it’s better than no water at all. You catch a quick glimpse of a hare, startled and running through the woods from the reeds nearby. At the very least, you can set up here for food later on, although it’ll be a bit harder to funnel them into the area you want. You press on towards the burnt clearing.

Noon has come and past by the time you stop inside the clearing. You set down the bundle by a large tree at the edge, and stretch out your shoulders and back. There’s a faint creaking and popping noise as you crack your joints. Opening up the bundle, you re-coil the rope at the base of the tree, and lean the rest nearby. You could still use the other spear and the chert axe still at the campsite, but those are a problem for tomorrow. The other main things to bring along will be food, and the bait you have planned. Setting some fires here will be a bit ill-advised, as you don’t want the killing field to start smelling like man with the smells of fresh fire, cooking food, and sweat. As such, you’ll probably camp out halfway between here and the pool, so that you’re less associated with both areas.

Taking up your preferred spear, you get ready to track again. That scat from the other day was a promising lead, and the fresh mud will provide the best information you can expect from here. Pressing the flaker on the edge, you hone it to a fine, razor sharp edge. You can’t explain why, but you feel like this is the right thing to do. Taking your auroch charm and fairy stone in hand and giving it a rub, you send a quick prayer to the ancestors before stepping off.

Passing by the scat and following further along south-south-east, you come across a part of the forest where the canopy is thinning out. After around 1.5 hrs or so, you notice a defile starting to emerge. There’s the leading edge of a ravine to the west, with more of it going further ahead. Peeking ahead from the bushes, you notice the path is leading onwards, the ravine getting deeper. Ahead, you can kind of see something like a cliff-face ahead. This defile would be an excellent area to trap. The ravine cuts off one avenue of escape, and this looks like a well-worn game corridor. There are some pine trees that you climb up and watch the area from, and it’ll be far enough that your scent shouldn’t travel easily, especially if you break some of the branches and coat yourself in the pine resin. If you set a strong-smelling enough bait in the burn, it’s almost a given this will be the path they’ll take.

Staring at this area, you feel curious about what may be at the other end of the ravine. You might find someplace better, and there will likely be water at the low end. As you move further along the path, you notice a promising sign. There’s some claw-marks on a tree, the five lines a characteristic of BRUN. It’s old cuts, but that could be useful information. A little way further, where the path is a bit barer, you move deeper towards the bushline, feeling exposed along the trail. Glancing back towards the trail, you feel the thud-THUD, thud-THUD of your heartbeat pumping faster. There’s a clear paw-print. Another. Another yet. It’s a trail. A fresh trail, you can tell because the edges are clean and you can even see the indents from the claws. thud-THUD, thud-THUD It’s alone. Large, but not massive. Not a sow, because you don’t see the small prints of cubs that you’d expect at this time of year. Not an old boar, too small and out in the open for a wily one. A yearling? If so, they may spook, if they haven’t been separated from the mother too long. It may be older though, old enough to be cocksure and unafraid.

You feel a chill crawl down your spine as you look up from the tracks. thud-THUD, THUD-THUD . Your skin feels tingly and prickly, the hairs raising on the back of your neck. There’s a crunching noise down the trail. It’s up-wind from you, and there’s a rank smell in the air. THUD-THUD, THUD-THUD. A rush of nervous energy flows through your muscles, your right hand gripping so hard on the spear’s haft that you think that it’ll crack and splinter. THUD-THUD. Your breath catches, and your heartbeat stops in your throat. THU-. HE’S RIGHT THERE.

Your blood is roaring through your eardrums as you rise from the bushes like the hungry ghosts in the village’s campfire tales. You feel adrenaline surging through your body, hot, cold, tingly and dull all at the same time. The crunching of nuts pulls you forward, against the dull voice telling you to flee. I will not flee. He is right there, and I. Am not. A COWARD! Any fear left in you is washed out by the snare drum of your heartbeat, and the whooping shout out your lungs. BRUN starts upwards as you run screaming at the top of your lungs. A few leaves drop from his lips as you shout ”Hi-hih-YAAAAAH!”. Your spear flicks outwards, glancing off of his great skull, thick dark red blood flowing downwards towards his left eye.

As you retract the spear and prepare for another strike, aiming to drive the shaft through the shoulder and hopefully clear the collarbone, you make eye contact. His great golden eyes meet yours for just a second, and you see the fearlessness of a young boar, as fearless in his resolve as you. His jaws open widely, a thick, purplish tongue lolling outward over yellow fangs. A boneshaking Rooo-OOOARRRRRR passes over, under and through you as his great bulk turns towards you. His massive paw lifts off the ground, and you react entirely on instinct.

Glancing blows (NARROW SUCCESS/NARROW FAILURE) inflict .5 points of damage, Telling blows (GOOD SUCCESS/BAD FAILURE) inflict 1 point, and Devastating blows (GREAT SUCCESS/TERRIBLE FAILURE) inflict 1.5 points. Devastating blows or better have a chance of inflicting bonuses or maluses in the fight, and crits inflict 4.5 with a MORTAL WOUND. Even if reduced to 0 or negative health, the combatant will fight for one more round, as they lash out with the last bit of vigour they have left. I have included a bonus for this Telling Blow, as you completely caught BRUN off-guard in this round.

You remember stories from the elder’s when you brought up when BRUN was last killed in the woods. You made the mistake of calling it by its true name BEAR. Don’t speak that cursed name in this village. They know when you speak it, and come when called, ruining everything they can touch. NOIR is smaller, and will feast on dead ones. BRUN will eventually stop if you don’t fight back, but is much more dangerous. Either way, if they get mad, they’ll stand up taller than you, and press down will their bulk. If you see that, pray to whoever listens that you have a spear to plant and that your aim is true.

You don’t see a good opportunity to plant, but you manage to bob and weave through his clumsy blows. It would almost be funny, but one of the gouges he dug out with a swing teared up a chunk of earth larger than your head. He’s rearing back, but whether to lunge with a bite or stand up, you can’t tell. A lash outwards graze his paw, but whether you got fur or flesh, he isn’t slowing down.

Jabbing outwards again, you slowly shift backwards. BRUN lunges forward suddenly to the left, causing you to roll of to the right. The blade of your spear licks out again, but catches him on the shoulder, an area thick with muscle and fat. If you got stuck in there it would be good, but a surface level slice isn’t going to do anything. He bellows again, and you’re starting to feel a niggling doubt in your heart.

Ducking under another lazy swipe, you have the ravine to your back. You still have some ground to give up, but this isn’t good. However, you might be able to do something yet.

Maintaining distance, you’re getting weirded out by BRUN’s actions. He stopped swiping, and is pacing around, just staring at you. Feeling off-put, you decide to feint, trying to bait him out towards the ravine. A false stab to the left, and you quickly shift it over, nicking his right ear on the recovery. That gets a reaction. he bellows, and the strange sense of calmness vanishes. It’s a small, negligible cut, but he’s has that wild fury back in his eyes. He’s rearing back onto his haunches, but you can’t tell if it’s a lunge, rush, or stand up he’s planning.

Seeing BRUN rearing backwards, you react entirely on instinct. Pressing the butt of the spear into the ground and planting, you can already tell you made a mistake. He lunges forward, your speartip grazing him over the scalp again. Twisting as much as you can, you avoid his snapping jaws, but still catch his shoulder in your bicep. The only reason your spear didn’t go flying away from you is the death-grip you have on it. Knees on the ground, you see him wheeling over to try and check his speed. He’s not going over, but his side is open to you.

Scrambling to your feet, you see BRUN panting heavily. You’ve been scoring a ton of small strikes, but nothing meaningful so far. You can see the rise and fall of his ribs, and can practically see the tension rippling through his back. Strafing around his backside, you can feel the air rush past your legs as he kicks out at you. You thrust out against, catching him on the right buttock. That gets a reaction, as you shift again. Roaring again, you see him rise up. He’s so blasted tall.

Seeing BRUN stand so tall, you remember the flash of insight from the elders. You plant the spear into the dirt, and aim for the centre of the chest.

>BRUN gains the following wounds! PUNCTURED LUNG, and GRAZED HEART! He’s not out yet, but bleeds out 1 damage every round and you gain +10 DC to further attacks, due to slow breathing.

His weight presses downwards, and you can feel the rankness of his breath in your face. He slides down the spear, but hitches on it halfway down. It flexs menacingly, giving you mere seconds to react.

Pulsing hard, with shaking hands, you back up on the ground. BRUN sinks closer and closer, his paws swiping at you and only getting air. You thrust out with the knife, the knife your Father gave you at the start of your rites, and hit true in the jugular. A massive gout of bright red blood splashes out at you, and BRUN is starting to slow. With a frightening CRACK, the spear splinters under his massive weight.

Scrambling, you scoot backwards as fast as you can. The blood sprays out again, hitting you in the face. BRUN’s paws raise up weakly, and slap at your foot. Even with the last ounce of energy left in him, it hurts. It’ll bruise by tomorrow, but you feel just a scrape rather than a missing foot. Sitting on your ass, the spear CRACKS, and he slumps over onto his side. The ribs moves up and down, and he lets out a soft moan. You make sure to watch his eyes, as they dart around. They lock onto yours, and slowly lose all life in them. You hold your knife out threateningly, but he doesn’t move. You watch him for what feels like an eternity.

It’s only now, covered in blood that is not your own, that you realize what time it is. The light is fading from the sky, and you are completely exhausted. First from the long walk with the gear from the camp, and now from surviving the encounter. You run your hands over your limbs, shivering as the adrenaline flows from you. Staring at the size of him, you wonder how you managed to come out alive, hale, and whole. Rubbing the auroch charm and fairy stone nervously, you stare at his dead eyes.

Honestly, I was a little surprised by some of the actions you guys took, but the dice fall where they may. Definitely didn't expect BRUN to just calmly stand there after getting nicked so much. That +5 bonus from the surprise round saved your asses a lot, there were a lot of narrow rolls that came down to the wire. I was half expecting to write up an epilogue of another person stumbling over your bones locked in combat with BRUN when I saw you guys chose strike at the beginning with a narrow failure on the dice.

Fire. You need a fire for the night. You don’t trust scavengers to not show up and ruin the carcass. You’d be damned rather than let your astonishing victory be ruined by enterprising crows and vermin. With that in mind, you start to wander the defile, looking for anything that will burn. You already had some tinder and fireboards to build it with, you just need the materials for it. After a while, you find enough dead branches and twigs to keep it going.

Returning back near the corpse, you kneel down and go to work with the hand drill. It’s funny, the exhaustion just puts you in the right zone. {i]Rub back and forth and down. Up. Rub back and forth and down. Up.[/i] The usual frustration at the punk not catching isn’t a concern, just the fluid motions of using it. Taking the small coal and blowing it into the remains of the bird’s nest, you eventually get the fire going. When it’s stable, you walk over to the hazelnut bush, and use the leaves to wipe as much of the blood off of you as you can. Your clothes are stained, but that’ll wait until the stream. Walking back, you enter a deep, dreamless sleep.

>The 15th day dawns! You’ve used up 1 use of TINDER, and consumed the readily available deadfall here. There is a few hazelnuts to eat, but little food besides the bear meat ahead of you.

As you groggily wake up, you start at the sight of BRUN’s face. You almost imagined that it was a dream. The tacky blood on your clothes is further proof that it was no dream, and you have won. You’re a bit thirsty, but it can wait for now. The fire is nearly out, and you have enough wood to keep it going until the mid-afternoon if you tried. Wiping the sleep from your eyes, you decide what’s next.

Your fingers itch to start working on the carcass. Stilling yourself, you manage to hold back the urge to carve away. It was a massive stroke of fortune to strike BRUN down, I’d rather not ruin his pelt. Certainly not a fine pelt like this. Besides, the spearheads will help cut it up, and the cordage will be needed to parcel it up anyway. That, and the pick should make going through the ribcage and joints easier. Sighing, you resolve to quickly get there and hurry back. Kicking some dirt over the coals, you step off.

You don’t see much more than thin trees and junipers along the way to the burn. Picking your way over, you find a quicker path that will shave some precious minutes off the time. Keeping it in mind, you arrive back over, past the scat that led you onwards, and erupt into the open clearing. Moving fast, you pick up a spear and the pick, and quickly wrap both coils of cordage around your body like a sash. Glancing around, you pick up a handful of the morels to stave off the morning hunger pangs, and wrap up a small bundle of charcoal. At least this way, you can stay another night out at the defile if you need to.

Returning back to the defile, you drop all your belongings in a heap. Tossing some of the charcoal onto the coals and building the fire back up, you stare back at BRUN. Thinking of all the ways you could form a totem from the carcass, you decide on a cape, with his head going over yours, his front paws going over your shoulders, and the pelt from the hips upwards covering your back. You wouldn’t have minded keeping the rest of the pelt attached, but it’d drag on the ground, and not be appropriate. You could also salvage the claws for a necklace as well.

Squatting down over BRUN, you try and find a decent spot to work with. Wrinkling your nose at the rankness of musk and the metallic tang of blood in the air, you know that you need to move fast. It’s already been a while with the organs inside. If I don’t get them out quick, all that meat is going to fouled. Jabbing the two spears into the earth near his belly, you press hard, and manage to shift it off the ground slightly. Kicking the pick between them and the dirt, you relax, and his gut is exposed for the knife. You make sure to grab a fistful of leaves from some of the bushes nearby. It wouldn’t do to lose my grip on the flake as I go along.

Taking out the horn flaker, you pressure knap the edges of the knife and the flake you have at hand. Taking the flake in your right hand, you rummage through the fur until you fight the crotch. Pressing in with the point, you very gently work the flake forward, slitting the pelt. After you clear the hips, you see a thick white membrane that looks to be holding the intestines in place. Stepping clear of the expected gush, you move the flake further along until you get near the chest cavity. As soon as you breech it, there’s a massive flow of dark red blood leaking from the opening. Giving it a bit of time until the flow slows down, you gently work you way forward, stopping to form a Y-section at the arms. Wiping the flake on some of the leaves, you follow the cut along up to the horizontal slash you left in his neck.

There’s a reek of blood in the air, but no foulness of ruptured organs. Re-sharpening the flake, you pull the digestive tract organs outwards from the cut you’ve made. Dragging them over the smoothest patch of dirt towards the edge of the ridge, you cut them loose and nudge them over into the ravine. There’s a meaty splash below as they hit the rocks, and you follow up with the lungs and heart. By the time you get the windpipe pulled and thrown as well, there’s a couple of crows circling the ravine, and you have a dull ache in the arms. It’s heavier work than you expected. Wiping your forehead absentmindedly (leaving a streak of blood on your face), you decide on what to carve up next.

Sneezing, there’s a rumbling gurgle coming from your stomach. Belatedly, you realize that you haven’t eaten anything more than a fistful of morels. With this in mind, you get to work on the rear flanks of the bear. Leg meat is bound to be tough as hell, but you make due with what you have. At least if it slips while cutting, it’s far enough down the pelt I can still make a cape out of the upper. Pressing hard with your body weight, you open up a line to the left leg.

First, you take the newly sharpened flake and slit the pelt along the inside of the thigh, working towards the paws. You cut all the way around the calf just above the ankle joint and peel the pelt away from the paws to expose the meat. Next, you take the flint knife and slice back and forth over the calf muscles until you reach the tibia and fibula. Cutting gently, making sure to not damage the edge over the hard bone. Exposing the bone to the air by pulling the meat away to leave behind around an ich of bone, you take up the flake again and score the bone lightly, just enough to mark it. Taking up the feldspar pick, you bring it down with two sharp CRACKS, and snap the bones under the blow, severing the paw with about 8” of leg attached to it. You go and repeat the process at the other paw, the knee joints, and the hip joints, resulting in four long pieces of meat to carve up.

Pulling the cuts further away from the carcass, you get into the process of slicing thick rashers of meat and skewering them on some of the sticks you’ve brought over. Taking the time to flake away more sharp edges on the flint knife, you set the rashers to cook as you keep working. By the time you finish the second section, the smell of grilling meat makes your mouth water, disrupting your focus. Taking one of the pieces off of a stick, you chew at the tough meat. Man, it’s tough like an old stag. However, the rich wild flavour of it burns it’s way into your memory, leaving a mark in it permanently. Sating yourself on a couple more morsels, you finish sectioning the meat and cooking it by the time the sun moves further along the sky.

With a belly full of meat, you decide that if you don’t get it now, you’ll be too weak to fight off scavengers soon. The allure of fresh meat is bound to pull in GRAU or PUMA by the time night will fall. Fire may hold them at bay for a while, but sleep will give them the opening they want. Glancing back down at the knife, you look back to the corpse. This is it. Father, may your blade produce pride for our people. Testing it’s razor sharp edge and freshening up the flake, you kneel down and get to work.

Starting at the rear, you carefully pull upwards by the tail. Working slowly and methodically, you separate the thick skin from the flesh beneath. Rolling the loose skin towards the head as you go, you focus on the left side of the body. When you reach the left paw, you make sure to wedge the knife into the wrist joint to remove the paw without damaging the pelt. At the base of the skull, you carve away from the neck. You’ll split the jawbone later when you have the chisel at camp, but you don’t want to spill out the brains just yet. You’ll need them to tan the hide when it’s fleshed and dried out. With that, you remove the spears and bring them to the other side.

A tickle and cough escape your throat. This thirst is getting frustrating. Focusing through it, you heave, and manage to roll the body onto the other side with a noticeable amount of strain. After you sit down to clear the spots, it’s a matter of minutes to finish removing the pelt and other paw. Sighing deeply, the pelt looks magnificent. You managed to get enough for the cape to drape near your feet, even after you get older and taller yet. With this trophy, not even that ass Jacoby will be able to cast shade in your presence. Take your stag pelt and choke on it Jacoby. Any clod can find a six point buck and bring it down with a pitfall, not everyone can bring BRUN down with just one spear and no hounds. Smirking, you take note of the dipping sun, and decide on where you want to camp tonight.

The tickle in your throat makes the decision for you. The pool will be the best place to camp out tonight. There should be enough reed husks to make up some tinder for tomorrow too. Rolling the pelt up tightly, you secured it with the creeper rope. Testing the heft, you should be able to walk with it if you use the spear for a stick. Taking off your shirt, you lay done the strips of meat on it. Securing it with the sisal cordage, you set it down. You look at the pick and other spears, annoyed at the time wasted on them. Sighing, you leave them behind. Probably won’t have time to pick them up. Shame, they were good tools. Hopefully they find use again for someone else.

Grabbing the ropes free ends in your left hand, you wince at the rough texture of the cordage before stepping off. After a while of walking, you notice a game path heading roughly NW. This must have been the way BRUN got to the pool. Either that, or it’ll cross paths with the trail I made before. Can’t believe I missed it on the way here. Holding up your fingers to the sun, you figure that it should help cut some of the time you’ll need. Time that you could use to spend setting up a fire. Time that you can spend on your butt rather than your feet. That, and the dull ache you’re starting to feel in your arches and shoulder, is that. Veering off the beaten path, you move along.

The hanging branches whipping your chest, and the occasional tall thistle brushing against your stomach after a short time in makes you almost on to turn around. Persevering through the stings and whips, you break through at the pool with the sunset slowly turning the skies a lovely purple-pink tone. Heaving everything at the bushline, and slump over by the pool. The water is tepid, silty, and one of the best things you’ve drank in recent memory. Sated, it’s a minor effort to get the tinder in your pouch lit. Taking up some of the dead bushes and shrubs with dully numb limbs, you collapse on your side, staring at the crackling fire as the stars wink in and out in the sky.

Waking up with the sun on your face, you roll over and scratch your leg. Your clothes are stiff and starting to reek, and the dull throb in your feet is still there. Blow this, the tanning can wait until later. The morning is for me. Warming up a bit of the meat for breakfast, you first drink your fill again at the pool. You’re planning on getting all this manky blood out of you and your clothes, so you may as well drink deep before it gets fouled.

Stripping down to your underwear, you slowly wade out towards the stream. By the time you reach hip depth, you can already feel the nibbling of minnows at your toes and the webbing between. A little giggle escapes, as you squish the soft river mud between them. The minnows move up your shins as you begin to soak and swirl the stained clothing. Wringing them out, the water slowly gets murkier and dirtier from the silt being kicked up and blood seeping out. It’s not as clean as you’d like without soap to scrub out the worst of it, but not having crusted blood on your arms is a soothing sensation. Rubbing at your face, you just squat down and enjoy the flow of running water, taking the aches and pains downstream with it.

As you lay in half-lidded repose, you are alerted by something way down the stream by the bend. It’s a quick movement, made harder to discern by your eyelashes. All you catch is a sight of tawny fur and a tail, moving east into the woodline. Bolting upright, you don’t see or hear anything else. The birds still sing their songs, and the ree, ree, reebit of frogs says plenty about the threat. Still, unnerved slightly, you pull some of the reeds to replenish your stock of dry tinder. As you do, you hear a deep and throaty AWOOOOO to the southeast, with a few quieter responses answering in the same direction. That’s the direction of the ravine. GRAU must have found the body. Better move on.

Stepping out of the stream, you put on the dripping clothing. There are still a few stains on the shirt from everything since it was just a water bath, but it’s not stiff and soaked through anymore. Standing nearby the fading fire, you start to re-pack everything for the last push to the camp. Tightening the bundle again and packing the meat inside the shirt again, you decide to hang them on either side of the spear as a make-shift yoke. The haft stays straight and true, so you scoop up handfuls of water to dump onto the coals. With them completely cool and kicking dirt onto the ashes, you hoist your things over the shoulders and start walking.

When you arrive by the blackberry brambles, you side-step that one outcropping. Taking a short break to shovel a few of the ripe berries into your mouth, you continue along the path. There’s a few more tracks along the stream, but nothing very large. Moving your gaze back and forth along the path and over the river, you notice a few willow bushes over at the north bank of the river around halfway between the blackberries and the campsite. They could likely be useful for making a basket if you need to, as well as something easy to burn.

Arriving back at the camp, you ease the burden off of your shoulders and roll the tension out of them. Stretching, you decide to check on the site to see if anything changed. The fish trap is empty, with the bait completely gone. Probably had everything eaten while I was away. One of the squirrel snares also is tripped, with a small pile of cracked bones and fur below it. Sighing, it’s a simple matter to re-set them. The small pile of buried bait was untouched, as well as the hidden food cache. There’s still some firewood, and you take out the tinder you salvaged earlier today. Kneeling down to start it burning, your mind wanders to what to do next.
