Yes, good, lovely. Trying to get Lockstones.

Lockstone is behind big hydra.

You are feeling REALLY REALLY GOOD RIGHT NOW thanks to Synthetic Seither Pills.

The thing to do is obvious. This’ll be fun.

The creature roars. It’s loud. Also different colors- blue, yellow, orange. Amazing. But you can tell. It’s slow. So DAMN SLOW.

There’s so many things you can do. So many things.

So many heads. They move like...cold spaghetti. It’s weird. Kinda makes you feel wiggly inside.

“Stop that,” you mutter as you spread your hands and let fly waves of sticky mana; it splashes and froths out from you in almost foam-like jets, and you see their mouths open- maybe to counter it, maybe to just roar, maybe they wanted to ask what you were doing- but it splatters on their teeth and gums and jaws, and before long it’s all very cotton candy looking and that makes you giggle a bit as their stuffed heads and necks thrash around as one in their limited movement.

“Er...what was that noise?” huh?! Who- oh, right, Gartoum. He does that.

“Nothing, don’t worry about it,” you say, charging forwards. Big little thick stubby tree trunks. Like tree trunks. You have a sword. It’s an axe now. Chop chop. There’s a lot of blood there- better move. Smells bad. No more tree though.

Big scream, ugh, it moved away. Need to chase it.

More chopping is required~

HA- other leg! It’s gone! Yes.

Moving on. Can’t be slow. Nope.

Less deadly gettin’ near it than breathin’ in Seither, but you don’t touch it. Once you do, you’re pretty much dead. the only thing I could find was this bit from #82
>“Are you sure this is safe?” Prima asks as you look up at a rather large Seither crystal. It’s at least twice your size, you estimate as you stand on the side of the mountain- smaller than what you saw out in the desert with the other Scrappers, but still large enough that even with your respirator, you can feel the power oozing into you in a very very nice way. There are many smaller shards surrounding it- broken off pieces (likely helped by your earlier actions) that are far easier to pick up, and frankly what you’d prefer to risk. You’re at least wearing gloves. “I can certainly understand your desire to obtain one of these if your system capabilities have increased to the extent mine have from its presence, but-”
>There are many smaller shards surrounding it- broken off pieces (likely helped by your earlier actions) that are far easier to pick up
I believe that by "earlier actions" it meant all the mech-fighting and explosions in the area, I don't think it was caused by our Nebula Buster

We've got more regular crystals than synthesized ones, they could be used in crystal-tech mana reactors that are used in artificer power armor (it's going to be repaired soon) or as separate mana source for minibots' abilities and crystal-tech devices. The Walkers ran on gas and has a completely different reactor - so if Seither crystals don't degrade then we'll be skipping some steps.

Cutting it. Heads off, burn them good this time. You can do that! You jump-

Oh, you missed. It’s flailing. That’s not good. Okay try again. Wait, jump away first. Very wild. Okay trying again- HA!

That’s one! It’s loud and screechy, but it starts slithering away. Not good. Okay, need to catch it, need to burn it…

HA! Some jumps, some leaps, but that’s one dead for good, judging by the flames. The others, though, the others…

Oh, it’s scared now. Panicking. It’s trying to run away. That’s silly, it can’t run. You won’t let it. You fly at it again. Now it’s more a hunter and prey. You’re the hunter.

Need to cut it MORE. Maybe keep some steak cuts. Mm...

There's so much lunging. So very much. It's a scolded dog now. Or cat. Or snake thing. Whatever. Point is it's running.

The second head falls and up it goes in flames after several more minutes. Oh, now it's trying to detach its last head. Prefer not.

Or actually, you don't care. Flamebring does that job well enough. Well enough, anyway. A bit more char on the torso than you'd like.

But! It's great! Because it's dead. Dead dead dead. Noooow...

"Big door." You walk up to it, and begin pushing. Heavy stuff.

"Sooo..." Oh! Gartoum again, hello. "Mind telling me why you suddenly smell like sunlight and cherries and just a hint of madness? Laast I checked, that Seither stuff did NOT quite smell like that, let me assure you."

Meh. No big deal. “Things change flavor when processed I guess? Was Cinnamon flavored, by the way.” Ah, there you are. Took a bit of shoving, but you’re in!

“No, no, that was YOU, I mean, not whatever it was you ate,” he elaborates. “But sure, then, just...it’s not your usual scent and I’ll admit it throws me a bit off.”

As you powerwalk inside, you gaze upon the massive, ominously dark shining stone, connected by two massively thick chains. “Well, what do I usually smell like?” You can’t help but ask before you think better of it.

“Like...like...well, I suppose it’s odd to say, but like...nothing. Or rather, the absence of anything. Something of a biting coldness that isn’t malice, but is simply there.” Oh. Huh. “..Unless you REALLY get heated, then you smell delightfully of intense pine! Rather invigorating, I’ll say! Reminds me of when sometimes I’d torch a forest for a good scare!”

...Moving on. The massive stone, at last, sits in front of you.

CUTTING THE CHAINS.

Flamebring’s hot hot hot, and that helps melt through the steel quicker. Way quicker. The two chains fall at last, and then as though recognizing it, the stone lets out a hum of power. Yes.

You reach for it...and as you expected, there’s a flash of light, and the second Lockstone is finally in your palms. ‘At laaast…’ you hear the much more traditionally wicked sounding voice in your head. ‘The second Lockstone. Three more. But with these two in your hands...and connected to ME...at last I can provide you with a bit of, shall we say...backup.’

Ooh. ‘Backup?’ you think back, just to be sure.

‘Naturally. After all...what King rules without an army? And what fortune for you, as I find myself in need of a General.’

Oooh. Yay. Yay Yay.

We must also get our turret back.

If shadow boss can teleport minions to us, we can use them to raid the remaining mana signatures faster and to assist in escaping.
If shadow boss can teleport minions directly into the fortress, can get them to have a party to distract the remaining guards. Same thing if he can influence the animals/monsters around the fortress to join in.

Rest assure, we'll leave this place pockets filled and the turret recovered. Mind the timer though, we might only have 1-2 hours left.
>>
>>4458485
Time to get some orbs.
>>
>>4458485
there's also a chance that the ground floor garrison decided not to deal with us and our turret and sent horse-riders to call reinforcements from the forces that have left the base earlier or those who are coming from the capital. Or both.
>>
>>4458485
>Is there any chance of getting reinforcements?
i suppose the shadow kind will be able to summon them out of thin air/darkness?

>Are we going to pick up the rest of the locks for the crossbow/faemetal case?
probably yes. actually that would work better for our case because there will be more confusion if all the magical items disappear.

>>4458492
why 2 hours? because of the imminent seither crash? we can always pop another pill. it's a last resource, but i'm serious
>>
>>4458495

>>4458503
i don't think they'll arrive THAT soon. it took us like two hours to arrive because we came by air and i don't think we have been that long inside the complex.

>It’s during the night that you hear the marching of feet and the clanking of armor in the distance. Finally.

>You’re careful to move, but sure enough, you see a platoon of at least a couple hundred marching in lockstep out of the fortress; they’re all dressed in slate grey armor, many in leathers and with flintlocks, but a sizeable number with steel and swords, and bringing up the rear, a contingent of mages as well. They’re all stone faced men and women all, and you have to admit their discipline is impressive.

>As you watch them crest the hill and march past the horizon, you know that now’s your time. Or at least, in a couple hours or so; best to finalize your plan for infiltration.

they left during the night at marching speed about 3 hours ago or so. if top-side troopers decided to send riders as soon as we've gone loud>>4458494, then they might catch up to them and might reach us in two hours if they send a small group of best fighters. the capital forces should've arrived early in the morning, so it's about 3-4 hours from now - if the riders were sent to warn them then they could also send a small relief force that can reach faster.

but 2 hours is still a lot, the only scenario where it'd be worrisome would be if we wanted to loot the whole armory (full of mundane weapons) so our minions could have some gear.
>>
>>4458517
i think i'm repeating myself too much, that's my cue to go
>>
>>4458517
ok, then there are two ways to go right now.
1) we finish this solo and raid whatever important thing that we can before the timer goes up.
this gives us the advantage of the enemy not exactly knowing what we wanted from the complex because we stole the kid, important items AND the lockstone but it makes it harder on us

2) we raid the complex with the shadow beasts
this becomes more troublesome because we need to kill everyone (including the helpful/powerful lady) or they will tattle that the shadow king is back and that will rally EVERYONE and make the raid of the other locations way harder.

personally i'd go with 1, but 2 can be worth it if we actually manage to clean the place before the army arrives
>>
>>4458520
Would suck to lose troops to attrition so early.
>>
>>4458517
This anon here's right.
Remember, we BLITZED through the dungeon the moment we went loud, including skipping stairs by blasting floors open, tunneling through a door and using a berserk pack to cheese a boss fight. We should be fine time wise, I'm just assuming the worst to make sure. I give it 2-3 hours, plenty of time to take the remaining artifacts.

Alright, so that’s a good sign- now for just one big question. “How do I get them here?”

‘Ha! I like your vigor. However, I require time to truly forge my connections again. In perhaps a days’ time, should you survive your egress from here, but not quite so suddenly.’ Damnit.

Still, promised! Now, though, gotta go go go. Quiet for now. But getting out? Hoping for at least ‘not that bad’. Really hoping.

Anyway, stone stored time to LEAVE. Get the faemetal box, box is still at the door, got box.

Subtracted from the 54. I'll set the rules right now: When you're in a fight, you roll for it and it'll basically be out of 1d20. When you're outside a fight, I roll for it using essentially sum total -1. (Subject to change) I figure that's fair to prevent senseless cheesing.

Right, right, time to see what else there is! Gotta see what that blue signature is. Might be a keystone. Might be. Maybe.

Not a long walk. Boring though. Very very boring. Need something to do. Too boring. Oh, your arms are windmilling. That’s neat. Ha.

Ah, here’s the door! Going in!

Table, lot of vials and fluids. Stop ...Huh, it’s a bird. Sorta. Bird thing. Crystal bird statue on the panel. Neat carving. Not too big, though. Pretty.

OH wait, it’s moving. Moving weirdly now. Oh, it’s flying at you now. Moving out of the way- huh. It’s on your head. It’s pecking at your head. Why? Doesn’t hurt though. At all. But it likes doing it. Weird.

No big deal, it can stay there. Cloak helps. It’s on top of the cloak. It’s still pecking, too. No keystones, though. Boo. Very Boo.

Going to the others. Closest is the purple and the yellow signatures. Jogging! Yes, moving faster. Oh, hey, red one is moving, too. Neat.

Bird’s still pecking. It’s kinda funny. Why’s it pecking? Whatever.

Oh, huh. Hall connects on the way back, too. You think. If there aren’t walls. If there are then duh it wouldn’t.

No time for this. You have places to be and they aren’t in it.

They try to say something as you walk out. Boring, no time. BURN THEM.

Okay while stomping on a couple. Stomp stomp stomp because they’re in the way anyway. Moving on moving on. Where’s the place you came in at- right, down the hall.

Moving moving moving- wow where IS everyone? Weird. Weird Weird strange.

No.

No.

No. You want them away. You want them ALL far away. Not near you. Near you is dangerous. For them. Also boring for you. You want OUT.

“GGRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!” The bellow leaves you. It’s raw. It’s deep. It’s powerful. It’s angry.

They don’t like that. You can see shouts. Also hear footsteps.

They’re running. Good. You’re not running because you’re sore. But you’re walking very fast. Oh, wait, wings. Wait, no, cloak. Shoot. Wanna keep that. Still leaving. Ah, there’s the stairs. Good.

Hey, there’s yelling up here. Why? More stampeding.

“DRAGON! DRAGOOOON!” Oh. Huh. “EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!” Who said that?

Oh hey, there’s your turret. Poor turret. It’s in a lotta pieces.

Owlia won’t be happy. Gotta get this back to her. Come here, turret. Okay, leaving now- oh.

Huh. One guy. Silly guy. Has a flintlock, though. Scared. Very scared. “D-d-d-don’t move! I’ll shoot!” High pitched voice.

Silly.

UGH. Walk close, maybe need to be louder- wait, too hot. Turn the hot down. Still sore. “IS THERE FASTER WAYS UP?!”

“I-I-I don’t know any?! It’s just stairs!” He’s cowering. Boo. “It’s for the regiment’s health they say! There’s just the rear exit to the stables and the normal ones!”

Oh hey! “STABLE EXIT, WHERE?”

“I-i-i-in the back here!” He points straight down the hall. “Leads to a hall that has some gear! Then you go up the slope to the rider stables and that- that’s all!”

Wow you’re sore. Long hallway. Still got some energy though. Plenty! Right?

Time for the sigil. “Hey, need help. Can you tell where I am? Look for me near.” You’re really sore. It sucks. Everything’s getting slow. You have to keep walking. Condenser, where’s your condenser...it should help. Kinda. Crystals...would they help? Maybe.

What’s going on? Uh. Blurry. There’s the door.

Oh, grand. Moonlight. Wind. Good. Take a few breaths. Focus.

Why is there tapping on your head- oh, right. Bird. Wait, it’s back? Where’d it go? Ugh.

You’re reaching up. It’ll probably peck you.

It doesn’t peck you. Feels weird. Warm but solid. It’s not even struggling. Pecks your hand. Doesn’t look panicked, though. Another peck. Chirps.

Ah, there’s a screech. Oh, you need to fly. Get out of here asap. Right, right.

Tense legs. Focus. JUMP.

Wings. Oh, wow, the air feels great. You can hear yelling, though. Lots of it. Right, cannons. Oh, there’s batty. Need a name for it.

You float on it, it’s...it’s fluffy but scraggly. It’ll work for now.

You’re sore everywhere. The crystal bird pecks your hand again. It’ll probably fly off eventually...if you let it.

‘Excellent work,’ you hear. ‘Now rest, for when you wake, we shall commence in earnest.’

Finally. Sore everywhere…you feel noodly. You want to shiver. It all hurts. You're exhausted. This SUCKS.

...Maybe a nap. Once you're far away

CRASH OUT: When you come off a Seither Boost, you'll have to suffer the effects of a Crash Out. Depending on how much you downed, a Crash Out can be anything from simply stiffness or some exhaustion, affecting attempted actions and rolls and preventing certain options, to flat out unconsciousness. No, you technically lost mana, but it doesn't register until you Crash Out. For an extreme example:

If you popped some pills and really needed to, you could spam Nebula Busters. Back to back. Until you Crash Out. The Crash Out rolls wouldn't be much different, but you'd be able to burn more than 3 and still function. But WHEN you Crash Out...you'd probably want yourself near a source of richly replenishing mana quickly.

Small Seither Shards:
>These Seither Shards can provide a Mana Overcharge of (1500) for anyone that utilizes mana, increasing both power and capacity for a brief time, or until the excess is used up. Minor caution should be shown in that using a high number at once may cause mana leakage to a debilitating degree.
I think it's safe to use up to 3 of those on the same day. Medium Crystal for comparison:
>These Seither Crystals can provide a Mana Overcharge of (4000) for anyone that utilizes mana, increasing both power and capacity for a brief time, or until the excess is used up. Extensive or indulgent use may carry consequences...
>>
>>4460052
I only said 'technically'. Like this anon said>>4460050, it was presented as a weaker version, not 'do or die' booster:
>Synth-Seither Pill (x6): This is an experimental pill of concentrated synthetic Seither. It is less potent than the original substance, but allows for similar effects if taken. It is estimated that the substance currently works at a 2:1 ratio of effectiveness- that is, two pills of concentrated Synthetic Seither would equal roughly one pill of organic Seither. She would like descriptions of its effects.

>Once you're far away
Everything. Fucking. Hurts.

That’s the first thing that comes to mind when you wake up.

And yeah, your mind’s back under control. You’re not 100% sure what happened between killing the Hydra and waking up in a giant cavern, but you’re pretty sure you got the Lockstone. You remember something about getting an army. Your bat is sleeping, with you on its back. It’s daytime.

And there’s a crystal bird sitting on your chest. It pecks at it. Doesn’t hurt, but it’s interesting. The little thing chirps at you, like it’s saying ‘yeah, deal with it’. The chirp is kinda...well, not really a ‘chirp’, more like a ‘ding’. Like a dinner bell being rung, but a bit lower. It hops around a bit. Chirps again. Pecks your chest.

This is about what’s gonna be your lot for a while. Mana condenser or not, those pills...holy CRAP they took a lot out of you.

Still, it seemed worthwhile. Of course, though, your ‘boss’ speaks up. ‘Ah, you wake. Are you functional?’

“Brutal honesty? No,” you think. It’d hurt to actually talk. “Overloaded a bit, need to recuperate.”

‘Drat. However, this will be acceptable for now. My connections...my focus is returning, but it is not fully complete. To ready my forces for use will still take some time.’ Oh. Convenient. ‘Until then, remain in hiding. We shall soon strike elsewhere, and bring fear properly into their hearts.’

“Oh yeah?” Well, that sounds like he’s got a plan.

‘Indeed. We shall converse more on the subject later, but for now, recuperation is necessary.’ He’s not wrong. ‘However, I find that construct on your chest fascinating. I have studied it for some moments while you rested.’

Huh? “Why’s that?”

“Its malleable nature. I have noticed something peculiar of it- it seems to have no type of mana, yet all types. I suspect the creature could be influenced to carry all elemental types with proper exposure- my own and even the damnable light included. Should you be able to bring it to heel, it may be of some use. Thought its violent nature seems...peculiar.’

Oh? Well, that’s fascinating. “Violent nature? It’s just pecking me.”

‘This is because you are Dragon. Your nature is of a Dragons, and what is yours is yours. However, I suspect that for more typical mortal foes...it seems like attracts like. It seeks to match itself to your mana type that it may feed. But it cannot. Should it, then, find a source of flame while it is of flame...it would feast.’ Mana eater? Wow. ‘Indeed, a worthwhile creature to induct into my army.’

Well. Fascinating. You’ll consider that for later. But for now?

Ugh. Everything still hurts. Maybe you can get back to sleep in a bit...

(NOW we're done. Will post tomorrow! Night!)

Also, i'm liking the shadow king as our boss. He might be a show off, but he cares abour his underlings.
As for the mana eater.... i do t think its a good idea to bring the kid with that thing around, but if we find a fairy and we atune it to that.... well. That will suck for them.
>>
>>4460073
The bird construct is fascinating, but I'm having some trouble understanding how it works and be used.

Is the pecking the way it matches to our mana? if yes, then why is it not working? because if Miranda doesn't feel like her mana is being drained then I assume it can't 'feed' yet.

That and if we ever want to use it to drain an enemy of mana, does it have to match them first via more pecking?
>>
>>4460073
Oh the birb really eats mana. And apparently took a taste for Randa's mana.
>>
>>4460083
From what i get:
The bird cant feed from us because our mana type is null and it cant feed from null, but if we brought the kid out(he is half fairy so he has light mana), the bird would peck him, change into light mode and probably drain him out.
>>
>>4460083
It's a mana eater it wants to eat mana. The epcking is because it wants to link with our mana and feed from it.

Now that i think of it this thing could probably eat a fairy.
>>

Alright, here's our loot for the raid.

+ Anga Totem. Still don't know what it does.
+ Drogan Military Uniform Jacket (Large).
+ Flintlock Pistol.
+ Drogan Officer Armor and Helmet. Helm's enchanted.
+ Bucklers x4
+ Bracers. There's something special about them, more info needed.
+ Wind Gem. A strange pockmarked, spherical, anti-grav, wind-producing orb/gem.
+ Faemetal box's scraps.
+ Prototype Golden Crossbow with some of it's bolts. Seems to be the "biggest" item that we snatched.
+ Whatever junk on the table that we looted too during our drug-fueled rampage >>4459727
+ Razorbladed Shield.
+ Crystal construct bird. Eats mana and doesn't afraid of anything. Warm but solid to the touch.

We have a LOT of scanning to do.

When you wake up for the second time...well, shit, you’re STILL sore.

But, you at least can move. It just smarts a bit. Lifting yourself off the furry bat, you land on the ground with a grunt- aching joints make it rougher than you’d hoped for...and that’s just a small jump. Anything more harsh than walking and maybe some like stretches is DEFINITELY off the table.

As you look outside, you notice that it’s nighttime; likely you’ve been out for a solid day. Even the crystal bird is...well, you’re not sure if it’s ‘sleeping’ or not, considering it’s crystal. But it’s very still and in a sleeping position, so presumably yeah. You’ll leave them be for now. In the meantime...stretches.

You’re halfway through a (very) truncated version of your usual routine when you hear the ‘King’. ‘Excellent timing! Rejoice, for my connections have been restored and strengthened- which means I can at last bring forth my hordes of shadowy creatures to do my bidding, and corrupt the witless beasts to serve under me forevermore!’

“Congratulations,” you whisper, testing your voice- damn, even speaking’s hard. “How do I get some of that?”

‘Simple,’ is the response. ‘I shall bequeath to you a minute portion of my power. Through it, you may summon the common shadow beasts under me at will, to an extent.’

‘To an extent?’ you think back, catching the qualifier.

‘Indeed. My power has not FULLY returned, of course. Whilst I can bring forth my common hordes, it will take some effort to return me truly elite forces to me. However! The power of corruption I can grant is more than enough to make up such numbers,’ he responds confidently. ‘The mindless beasts shall be changed with but a touch and your own dragonic will! From there, they are yours to command, second only to myself, of course! I trust this explanation is understandable, yes?’

I'm actually attempting to provoke an emotional response to gauge how likely it is the shadow king is a fairy themselves.
>>
i'm thinking that the shadow king is the "other" being the fairy tale was alluding to. you know, the one the fairy imprisoned.
>>
>>4461967
I though the shadow king was the fairy that imprisioned the being
>>
>>4462130
Same, since the being that was imprisoned supposedly sang well, which I can't imagine the shadow king doing.
>>
>>4462135
>>4462130
if that were the case, the shadow king wouldn't hate the fairies as much. Also, the "other" being in the fairytale was completely different from what the fairy had known, plus it makes sense that the fairy did manage to capture the "other" being again, making it a clear allusion to the shadow king's current state of being.
>>
>>4462137
I think the fairy was the shadow king because in the poem it says the fairy sworns to use the evry shadows that the being uses to hide to find him.

True it's not mentioned how the being uses the shadow to hide itself so the natural control of it might be a allusion tot he shadow king skill.
>>
>>4462177
that makes sense as well i suppose although i feel that the king would be more focused into capturing this other being rather than revenge because judging from the fairytale, the fairies don't have a concept of evil emotions like revenge and spite.
>>
Seems to me speculations point to our boss being the fairy in the fable. So finding the other being will be our alternate win condition no?
At least we know there are more than one way to accomplish the job. Or we do both and get mad dough and loot.
>>
>>4462355

>>
>>4462355
i still feel he's the captured being, because if he was a fairy he wouldn't have tried to hunt them down like this and would actually have skills to counter them and would refer to them in a different way

Huh. “Well, couple of questions. Is there a limit of beasts I can convert and how advanced are the orders they can take?”

‘Indeed, sadly. There are smaller wretches that can only understand the most basic of commands- to attack, retreat, captures, and so on. But more tactical maneuvers escape them. Have no fear, however, they know their place well.’ Blah. Well, it’s something.

Next question, then. "Alright, so what creatures should I prioritize? I mean...does this power also work on mortals and fairies to an extent?"

‘Ahhh...excellent initiative. But it does not- or at least, not so smoothly. They are creatures of complicated mind. This power works best on beasts; things that know only instinct. Indeed, it’s quite the dream to be able to corrupt a Fairy...Once upon a time I just about managed it...’ Oh? Did he? ‘Alas, it ended with the creature vanishing from my senses. Its own natural power combined with what I granted it had a most curious effect. I’ve little doubt it’s long perished. Such creatures taken as it was cannot survive for long without my power to continuously fuel it. Humans, on the other hand, are both impossibly difficult and yet easy. Their minds are...unfocused. Chaotic. What entices them one moment may well disgust them the next. Far better to simply dominate them in body and spirit than waste energy on the mind.’ Hm. Well then.

Next question. “Alright, so what about number limits?”

‘You are channeling my power through this clasp; it will be limited, but I anticipate you to put it to good use. Regardless of whether you summon creatures or manipulate their minds, I care not so long as you accomplish your task.’

Vague, but hopefully in a good way. Chances are he’ll tell you if you’re running up on a limit of sorts. “Got it.”

‘Perhaps you should practice, then. I suggest summoning a basic Wretch or two. Will the creature into existence- no. DEMAND it.’

Hm. “How do they look?”

‘Small, yet fierce. Your imagination will do the rest.’ Oh no. Imagination. Well...you can try.

Alright, so...you DEMAND your Wretches to come forth!

>They look like small, mildly humanoid creatures: shadowy, inky, beings in a feral crouch- mouthless, with bulbous heads and glowing eyes, and a tiny slit mouth with dripping goopy teeth. They barely come up to your knee, though. (A focus on all-rounding, with no major outstanding points)

>They look like Quadrupedal, reptilian beasts, with massive toothy mouths. In fact, they’re pretty much ALL mouth, with maaaybe a small stubby body. No eyes, but they likely don’t need it. (Savage mobbing attack-focused beasts)

>They look like they’re some kind of shadow beetle; with a vicious, razor shell and powerful pinching, trapping jaws. They’re very low to the ground, but with those hidden wings, they’ll be quite useful. Not to mention the sheer fear factor. (Stealthy striking and fear-inducing focused.)

They can sabotage supplies and distract people while we rush our objectives. Just let them cause a ruckus and sneak behind enemy lines using Gartoum.

Turtle-like creatures. They have projectile breath weapons and can retreat inside their shell to stall. They also have a vicious biting attack if needed (ala Snapping Turtle). Their downsize is, of course, their speed. They can keep up with a running normal human but they'll eat dust when pursuing a Quickening-boosted one or any other abnormals.

Basically, mini fortresses. Slow but powerful and hard.
>>
>>4462487
I think for that, the beetle might not be bad, and if they can sneak then it'll be easier to set up an ambush or blockade with them. I don't know how noticable summoning minions is, but I wager it's not something to be done in the moment or while being chased.
they have some form of carapace, and being low to the ground means you have to aim downwards to hit them, and a low profile against projectiles which is convenient for minions.
I sold myself on the mystery beetle

I like the beetles too, but their offensive capabilities aren't the best when disregarding stealth and when combating creatures that don't have morale issues, or elite foes.
What I proposed can't do stealth (will be funny if someone get sneaked on by turtles nonetheless), but they can help out on tougher fights with their breath weapons while staying out of the way and can't be killed easily. They are also effective tarpits.
>>
>>4462486
alright, forget it, going with bugs after all
>>4462502
I think that once we'll get the next lockstone there will be an option to either upgrade Wretches or to make a new kind of minion, something Medium sized. We can pick something tanky/well-rounded later. Or make some ourselves if we read those damned summoning books already.
Knowing how action segments usually go, we'd probably have to make a lot of snap decisions - and I don't think these turtles would reach their new objectives in time. Beetles can fly, which is extremely useful - they can move over water, fortifications and other obstacles, get into enemy formations without harm and mess with their vision and equipment (extremely annoying for archers, musketeers and artillery crews) and because they're so fast and creepy then they could spook horses and other mounts used by cavalrymen.

What comes to your mind is something that’s fear-inducing. A primal, but not overwhelming fear; something that causes unsettlement more than panicked flight. As the burble up from the ground, there’s a group of them, about a dozen. They look like they’re some kind of shadow beetle; with a vicious, razor shell and powerful pinching, trapping jaws. They’re very low to the ground, but with those hidden wings, they’ll be quite useful. Not to mention the sheer fear factor. ‘Ahh, I see.’ The King muses. ‘These insectoid Wretches will be most useful for widespread reconnaissance- your own submissive Shadow has done quite some work in that area, and I have noted it seems to be of your standard stratagems.’ Huh. So he knows Gartoum’s with you? Well, that makes sense, but still. Part of you just kinda thought he’d be more...offended? Considering the mutual shadow thing. Well, no looking a gift horse in the mouth, whatever. ‘You’ll be able to summon quite a swarm of these, though their survivability appears...lacking. Though I suppose that can be mitigated by focusing more of your energies on improving size, though obviously numerical superiority will suffer in exchange.’

Well, they’re not meant for frontlining, soo… ‘Still, I will require the majority of my power to prepare, obviously. You will receive more forces or be able to summon more in due time...particularly if you retrieve yet another Lockstone.’ You kinda figured, but good to know. ‘I suggest you practice with orders and summoning for the time being as you acclimate...wheresoever you choose to retrieve the next Lockstone. Personally, I suggest Alminia,’ he grumbles at the end. Obvious bias. ‘For their Lockstone is not in the capital, I can sense. Somewhere well outside of it yet in the territories- though that is as far as my detection can go. Damnable barriers…’

Well, YOU still need to heal up, leaving your actions limited, but at the same time, not on an immediate timeframe. You suspect that at this rate, you’ll be back to normal in about two more days...rough, but you don’t make a habit of overselling yourself these days. Sooo in the meantime…

>(Limited) Action! Choose Up To Three, though strenuous physical efforts will come at a penalty.

Scanning loot is a waste of 'long rest' action, it can be done whenever as well.
>>

So you want to try to practice a spell as we're getting over a headache from taking magicmeth while we hang with a fairy kid who probably wants to know why we're not eating him, and likely has plenty of questions regarding what happened.
>>
>>4465791
Yes? It's not a physically demanding action and opportunities to level up our skills are rare. Also we can stuff him back into the bag when we're done chatting. It's not like the downtime is only a night, we have 2 days. Scanning loot is indeed a waste of a long rest action like that anon said.

I'd rather we practice when we're not mana hungover and risk rolling with a penalty. We've already had plenty of bad luck learning spells before, so let's do it where we can get some sort of advantage rather than disadvantage.

the only issue i have with bringing fairy boy out is that the bird might want to eat him up.

(Will be handling this one bit by bit.)

Well, all things considered, you don’t exactly want for things to do, honestly. It’s been a busy few days. First thing’s first, in this case: you have a certain someone to attend to. Reaching inside your bag again, you feel for a tuft of hair, then haul. The fairy-hybrid thing comes practically popping out of the bag yet again- this time in full, and with a bit of a yelp, even, coming to land flat on his bottom a couple of feet away from the bag, with an honestly surprised look on his face.

It doesn’t last, however, as it returns back to his completely neutral-to bored expression he’s been wearing for since you saw him. “Ah. And once more I’m brought to bear for your purpose, although I confess to knowing not what that purpose is at this juncture.” He pauses, seeming to look around him. “And we are yet somewhere I know not. Fascinating, but alas, I doubt I am long to see it.”

Alright. First thing’s first. What do you want to ask this guy?

>Okay, so do you have any idea what or who you are?
>Do you know about any of the other experiments that Drogan had?

Might as well start off close to home. “Okay, so do you have any idea what or who you are?”

He shrugs. “I am me. They mentioned me being ‘imperfect’ and ‘fae-blood’, for whatever purpose that may serve. I know little else, as those walls have been most of what I’ve ever known.”

“‘Most of’,” you note. “That doesn’t mean ‘all’.” And he’s already helped you out. Fae-blood, huh? Then yeah, that...could mean a LOT. That they managed to do that to a fairy in the first place- maybe. AND that he was ‘imperfect’. Could be research still in progress...or simply putting an old prototype into use while the finalized version is out there or worked on elsewhere.

He nods. “Indeed. If you truly wish to know...then I recall waking up in something far less amiable than my environs when you found me. T’was colder, and many individuals were looking towards me in a manner most chilling. I knew little, yet I knew much. I knew that these humans were of a foul countenance. Something about them did not sit well with me, and initially, I struggled.”

“Struggled? How?” You didn’t think he had the stomach or will for it.

“I wished them gone, and so I lashed out. Mindles, strange emotions,” he explains as though he’s ashamed. “And it resulted in them disappearing in pools of red. They were dismayed, but not dissuaded. And so it was I was eventually imprisoned. A different one, at first. Struck with rods and whips for several days, where they collected my essence, and then cast into the device that I called my home for many many moons.”

“Creepy, to say the least,” you admit. Though if they tortured him...he's got one heck of a healing factor- you can't see any scars on him. “So you’ve basically been in there since day one. That’s unfortunate, but it does bring up something else. Do you know about any of the other experiments that Drogan had?”

He pauses in thought. “None of my like, to my good fortune. But there was one that I recall. A strange creature they mentioned. Claimed to be some creature that could ‘keep me in line,” though I know nothing else about it.” Hm.

“Wouldn’t have happened to be a sort of mana-eating bird, would it?” you chance as you pick through your bag. Where’s that scarf...ah, here it is. Should help at least with mana recovery. Physical would still need help or time.

He shakes his head slowly. “As I said, I know nothing else about it. Merely that it was a threat on my ever-limited life. Perhaps it was, and my memory betrays me. Perhaps it was not, and my use to you is as fallow.”

Grand. Well, that’s not much to go from. Still, you have to say something. “Alright, then, here’s the deal...”

> “I’m going to drop you off...somewhere. I can’t take care of you, and NO, I’m not eating you. But ideally you’ll be better received there than where you were.”
> “You’re going to stick with me and figure out how to be ACTIVELY useful to me. You’ve got a LOT of latent power, and I hate giving up an advantage.”

Something doesn't sit right to me...

Also if he's fighting with us we have to limit A LOT of our arsenals (Z1, Flux Wave and the bird). I do not want to sacrifice those for a mostly unknown.
>>

Gartoum is also mana dependant and limits our arsenal. Every teammate does. So what? Also this is just another reason to improve Flux Bubble.

If you ask me, I prefer soloing unless our partners can take care of themselves. The boy's too green.
>>
>>4467524
fair enough, but he can be actively helpful to us out of combat as well. how? we'll know once we know what he can do
>>
>>4467507
Only 3 options is not 'A LOT'. We don't know how to use the bird properly and have to tame it first, and Z1 is only for very specific situations (lotsa mages/fairies concentrated in one area).

Fair enough, if he's a walking mana dispenser then I very much doubt Miranda would give up such an advantage. We'll see in time.

I want to do this but not say it in such a way that it tips off our Shadow Overlord.
>>
>>4467562
the war spoils are ours. that was as per our agreement when we met with shadow king face to face. he has no claim on the boy or our loot
>>
>>4467561
I voted to drop him off because he's volatile and green ----> potential to blow up on our face later down the road.
>>
>>4467491
>>4467557
In that case I'll go with the second.
> “You’re going to stick with me and figure out how to be ACTIVELY useful to me. You’ve got a LOT of latent power, and I hate giving up an advantage.”
Maybe teach him one or two of our spells if he behaves himself. Chances are he'll enjoy messing around with Tongue-Tye and Sticky-Mana.
>>
>>4467557
I think leaving him in Drogan will get him back to that fortress. Just because he takes shelter in the fairy temple, doesn't mean the empire or military won't force their way into getting him back.
If we are gonna drop him off, maybe do it in Alminia.
>>
>>4467567
we can tell him to make a shield on himself and just blow up stuff that seems safe. or we put him in the bag when the situation demands it. its not like he HAS to be always useful to us.

>>4467573
who said anything about leaving him in drogan? there are many other temples in this world.

>>4467570
we could teach him how to make flux waves or barriers.... that seems safe enough
>>
>>4467578
I'm a little worried about using Flux Wave near a mana based being, but I'm fine with teaching him how to make barriers.
>>
>>4467573
The Fairy faith is a respected neutral faction above countries. The fortress already has a rep/rumour of doing unethical experiments, if the Drogans decide to barge in then it will be a massive international scandal that they can't tank after losing their fort.
>>4467578
>teaching him Flux Wave of all things
Anon, I sincerely hope you don't want to do this.
Giving the kid an undiscriminating spell that prones to friendly fire, or actually thinking he can grasp such a complex technique (even Izumi has trouble learning it).
>>

dude, its just an idea for the moment and if my idea is retarded enough someone like you or 5m4 will jump to stop me.
>>
>>4467591
And teaching him spells isn't that easy. We're not local, our innate magic system is different. It's like having an alien trying to teach a human profession to a human.

To be honest I still think dropping him off right right at the temple near the Drogan trade city is the best idea, hitting them while they're down and all that. They'll be too busy fixing the scandal instead of diverting resources to other lockstones.

And we still don't know what the kid's stance on us bringing in the apocalypse.
>>
>>4467625
we can ask him. i'm pretty sure he wants some revenge on the people who imprisoned him
>>
>>4467637
If we inform him about the impending apocalypse, he can't be used for false flag operations anymore. Drogan is small potatoes in mortal eyes.

“You’re going to stick with me and figure out how to be ACTIVELY useful to me,” you explain. “You’ve got a LOT of latent power, and I hate giving up an advantage.” With how his aura alone seemed to be used to power the base, you have to imagine there’s some viability there- and you doubt he’s been trained at all, so if you can actually get him to LEARN a trick or two, that potential grows exponentially.

“Ah. So an exchange of jailers?” he asks plainly.

“Yeah, but you’re getting better accommodations with me for now,” you admit. “IF you don’t want back in the bag, I won’t force it so long as you don’t try anything funny, and I’ll actually give you a listen if you happen to have any opinions.” Not that he seemed to particularly MIND the bag, but having him on-hand would just be a lot more convenient, really.

“As you say. Perhaps a better fate than making a meal of me. Then again, perhaps not.” ...sure, whatever.

You don’t get much more out of him; asking about his memories in general (like the dragon thing) causes him to shrug and simply profess that he’s always known that ‘dragons hold an inexorable disdain for fairy-kind, and many feasted on them. Though fairies do not always reciprocate. I know not how or why I am certain of this fact. Another addlement of my mind, I suppose.’

Fantastic. Well, you’ll let him acclimate, and in the meantime, decide to take some time to inform him of the details of the world he’s in- as well as fill in what you know about the fairies. You figure that, all things considered…

>You’ll just give him the fact that you know- omit the fairytales and legends.

The rest of your time spent with him as you recuperate is of telling him of what you know about the world- everything that you’ve read in your perusing of the library, and the other sources of information you’ve managed to acquire in your relatively short time here. It’s not much, but you do include information such as locations, rulership, and most importantly, history.

Or at least, history and myth. You know more about what MIGHT have happened than what HAS happened, but you admit such, and just tell it to him straight. He seems to take it all in with a less than concerned air. Even the part about the fairies and dragons doesn’t seem to phase him much- save for a slight shifting in position when you start on the tale. By the end of it, he’s leaning in a bit more. Clearly interested then, but maybe not understanding said interest aside from how it relates to his own knowledge. “Is there more such?” he asks. “To have such a thing happen, and yet...it be so uncertain.”

"There ARE tales and legends about us higher beings,” you admit, “but only a few or none of them get close to the real deal.” With that, you stand up- you need a walk around to work your muscles back into order, and the sun’s just barely coming up. “If you want the truth, stick with me and cooperate, then I'll show you how deep this hole goes. Gargles!” He seems confused, before the massive bat turns to you slightly. You’d come up with the name on a whim while talking, and while it wasn’t the best, it worked well enough...so long as no one else knew about it. Or at least no one who mattered. “Keep an eye on him. He tries to run, hold him here. I won’t be far.”

The massive thing chirps in confirmation, and without anything beyond a stern look, you half walk/half limp out of the cavern. Just a quick loop around should be fine, staying within eyeshot of the cavern…

You can’t help but mutter some swears as you walk, trying to convince your legs to return to standard working order. At this rate, you can barely keep up a jog, much less a flat out sprint or a run. Those Seither pills are no joke...it’s not even matters of stamina, it’s just if you push them too hard shit starts hurting. In fact, a break wouldn’t go amiss right now…

You wind up sitting under a rather large tree; the area Gargles had decided to escape to seemed to be a wooded forest area with very tall trees. You’re not sure where you are, unfortunately, but likely you’ll be able to get your bearings once you take off. It’s here that you decide it’s probably best to at least spend your time somewhat productively and search in your bag for something you’ve been meaning to get back to- one of the books you were given back on the job you got Gartoum in. You’re not sure if much in it will apply to the world you’re in right now, but eh. You could at least likely gain some inspiration, right?

The tome is as you (vaguely) remember it, a manual and bestiary of what are now otherworldly creatures that you might be inspired from. The glyphs and motions and circles are likely useless to you now, but you at the very least might be able to get something from the creature list…

It’s as you’re perusing the book as the sun is properly crested over the horizon, however, that you hear something coming through the underbrush. A quick sniff indicates little if no innate threat to you, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a weapon…

You actually see them a bit before they see you, which is good as it lets you check that your cloak is up and everything’s hidden. It’s just a person- though a big one, tanned and well-muscled. He’s dressed like a hunter, with a massive bow and leather vest, with tan, rough slacks and a green shirt amongst other small things. His slightly furred face has a look of worry on it- and when he turns to you, confusion. “Hm? Ho there, child! What’s a youth like you doing out here all alone? Redbloom Hills isn’t the best place for a youth to take a lie down.”

Can’t risk finding out too late he’s some sort of ranger or law enforcement, especially with the possible risk of a bounty on our heads.

You sigh. “As you can see, I’m reading. I’d prefer if you left me alone, though.” Meh, he’s not worth bothering with. He just looks like a concerned hunter, so frankly-

“Ah, that’s true,” he admits, interrupting your thoughts. “However, I cannot say it sits well with me to simply leave a child on her lonesome in the forest. Not the Warden’s way.”

“ ‘Warden’?” you ask wryly.

He doesn’t seem too surprised, fortunately. “Ah. You’ve not heard of the Shade Wardens, then? Understandable, considering you don’t seem local…from the islands, then? Your countenance suggest such.” Oh. Huh. You were wondering, admittedly. “Well, long story short, we patrol these hills for bandits, criminals, and other such miscreants. We hold authority around these lands as well, so it’s usually less good of an idea to stir up trouble here as well. But really, child, as alone as you are…”

“I’ll be moving before much longer. I just wanted a bit of a break,” you insist.

“Mmm.” He doesn’t seem convinced. “Tell you what. I know this area is peaceful enough, though I’m still worried. So I’ll come back around come lunch-time. My patrol takes me roundabouts most of the major pathways. Hopefully, I’ll not be seeing you here alone next time, yeah? If I do, I’d hope you’ll be in shape to follow me to the nearest town.” With that, he nods. “Farewell for now.”

He walks off, and you frown. Great, you’ve got a busybody to worry about…

Well, forget him. You’d rather not deal with having to pack up and go and potentially make yourself worse or have to worry about hiding out somewhere less convenient. If he gets pushy, either you or Gartoum or maybe, y’know, your giant freaking bat will deal with it. In the meantime, though, daylight is shining through the trees, and you have more rest to catch up on. Especially because later in the day you want to do at least SOME training…

In particular, the Flux Bubble of yours is proving...dicey. You know it can be of use, but you have to refine it more. The question is, what exactly do you want to focus on? There’s a number of aspects to the technique that need improvement, but as it stands, you may need to just focus on one at a time…

Gargles stirs from sleep only barely as you see the fairy-ish kid sitting crosslegged, right inside of the cavern entrance. He makes no sound or indication of your return aside from locking eyes with you momentarily, either. Strange kid. “Enjoy the sunrise?” you ask.

“Never have I witnessed such a moment,” he confesses. “I find my mind taken with questions for why such a thing happens so.” You have no idea what that means, and less care about deciphering it. Before you can mention your plans for later today, however, you hear a familiar ‘chirp’.

The crystal bird, clearly awake now, flutters towards you and lands on your head, pecking at it once again. You’ll just take that as a hello. Alright, then…

Although to your surprise, it then flutters over to the fae-child. Before you can warn the boy, however, it pecks at his head- once, twice, to little reaction from him. And on the second time, you see a thin string of...something. Not blood. Mana? It’s silvery and seems to flow into the bird; only for a few seconds before it stops- and the bird has changed color from a clear light blue to a brilliant silver, save for its eyes, which remain pitch black, aside from a small spark in the center.

“...did that hurt?” you ask.

“Only for the fleeting moment all transient pain has,” he says idly. “Aside from such I am no worse off than my sad state before.”

Interesting…but something to think about later. For now…

Weakening and knock-out are great together for an incapacitation technique. First effect disrupts while second keeps them pacified. It'd also make the subject more liable to stay inside the Bubble.

I'd like to work on it's strength too, but even a full Flux can't instantly knock someone out. If we can have it out without channeling then we can use that time to further suppress the targets, making them staying inside the bubble longer or do something else.

Your focus this time is...well, focus. You need to make it easier to maintain, and not cost so much concentration. The rest can come after that, really.

For the most part, it goes well enough. The idea of keeping a force of unpredictable mana in a finite area is...difficult to pin down, but you have to approach the idea from a different angle than how that sounds. It’s more like a whirlpool or wild storm in a specific location whereas outside of it is clearer skies. It’s enough to get some semblance of progress, actually- the bubble is steadier after a couple of hours at it, though that’s without any major interruptions (besides the occasional pecking bird). You’d need to try it out against something a bit more...physical.

The rest of the morning is relatively calm, although you can see the sun peeking high in the sky by now...

He'll be along shortly. Question now is, how to go about it if you want to test it on him?

>Just launch it and be done with it as soon as he shows up. No reason to wait.

Thinking about it, it’s probably for the best that you keep away from any law and peacekeeping organizations. Chances are this guy might have a friend or two waiting in the wings, and that’d just cause issues if you decide to do anything rough to him. It’s annoying to realize, but you should probably get going after all.

“Change of plans,” you say to all gathered. “I’m packing up, and we’re leaving ASAP.” Thinking about it, it’s not quite noon, hopefully. You can’t really tell entirely at this angle, but you still want to leave as soon as possible to prevent any unwanted sightings. The fairy half-breed is looking at you with something...you think is vaguely approaching confusion, but you’re not sure. “So life continues to flitter by…” he mumbles, even as you haul him up and plop him on Gargles’ back.

“Stay there, hold on tight, and don’t squirm, okay?” you pointedly warn. He just nods, slowly. The bird simply lands on his head, pecks once. More mana seems to drain from him, not that he notices. Or if he does, he’s not saying anything. Probably should…

You reach out to grab the bird, but oddly enough, it proves unnecessary- it just flits over your hand and back onto your head.

Well then. That’ll work. “Alright, big guy, we’re off.” Hope he doesn’t mind daylight hours too much…

With a chirp nonetheless, the big bat takes off-

"What the-!" And just as you clear the trees, you see a trio of people not far away from your cave- all of them looking up at you in shock.

Fantastic. Before you can consider what to do about them, though, Gargles is already getting high above the clouds so that you can plan your next destination…if you were to try and dive back down at this rate to take care of them, it'd likely make things WORSE. No, maybe it's best you just continue on your way.

Which would be to...where, again? Alminia, then likely Balunda, then the islands…hmm...wherever you go, you’re going to need to stay low-key for at least another day…

“Think it’s high time we headed out to Alminia,” you figure. With the possible assistance, the Lockstone somewhere around there, and the general happenings between it and Balunda, it sounds like it’s going to be a pretty active place. “Let’s try and be careful on our way there, huh?” A high chirp is the response as it takes off in the direction- thank goodness you don’t have to try and direct it yourself. Seems like this thing’s smart enough to either know where you mean or just kinda glean the information from either you or the Shadow King.

“An endless void both beautiful and terrifying, one which allows for immense possibilities in all directions of the kind unimaginable,” your fairyish friend says placidly. “It is...unique.” Huh. Well, that’s not an entirely negative view of things from him, for once. Progress, you suppose.

‘Alminia is a fool’s paradise,’ you hear your client grouse. ‘Populated by idiot believers of those fairies even in the far countrysides. To my great frustration, it is that SAME foolishness that prevents my honing in on the location of the Lockstone. They TAUNT me with it, I KNOW IT!!’ You have to wince at how loud his voice gets with this one- he’s REALLY not happy with them, huh? ‘I know not what foolish invented magics permit them to hide it in such a manner, but know that I can sense its presence in the territory and little else. You will have to explore the area, scout, and plan.’ Grand. ‘This will take time, I’ve no doubt. However, you shall succeed! For none under me have the rights to fail!’

...suuuure. Whatever. Not like you’re in much shape to do a lot of hiking anyway. Taking out your map, you pour over it, looking around the territory of Alminia. Let’s see...there’s a few places that you...THINK you’re near, if you have this aligned correctly…

>The village of Napsme. Doesn’t seem to be very large at all, situated near a valley. Might be a good rest stop if nothing else, keep you out of the way and see if there’s any down-home local legends that have any chance of being true.
>The riverside town of Legosa. According to this icon, it’s larger. Likely at least some trading going on, considering the river goes clear out to the ocean, even if it’s a bit of a trip. Might be able to scrounge up some clues, though keeping low-profile will either be very easy or hard.
>The town of Narhume. Not sure about this one, but there’s an indicator that there’s a major church here, though it doesn’t say to whom. It’s risky business landing there, for sure, but could be useful in solving your passenger mystery. If you bothered to care that much, that is.
>The guard outpost of Eagle’s Landing...but why would you want to travel there? Well, if they have any information about the Lockstone, it might be worth the effort to, well...make an entrance. So to speak. Despite the fact that it’s a small outpost, it’d be a right pain though...literally.

“We’ll head for Legosa,” you decide, and Gargles angles himself slightly...really, his automatic knowledge is fantastic. There’s no commentary from the kid at least. You’re not sure what all it’ll be about, but if nothing else you should be able to sniff out some rumors or the sort. Ports tend to be major locales for that sort of thing, after all.

The flight...is taking some time, allowing you to get some rest; seems like there’s more than a bit of distance between the two areas for certain...that or Gargles was being careful of you, which is nice to believe. However, that doesn’t help entirely- after about two hours your body’s starting to cramp, and you have to ask him to drop for a moment to rest yourself on solid ground. Fortunately for you, you’re on a rather empty valley trail; not a rocky one, but just lightly populated by trees, with large outcroppings of rock formations here and there. There’s a strange circular one on top of a hill, blocked from all viewable directions save the air- which’ll do just fine as a landing spot, and as Gargles descends, you take the risk and hop off, landing in a deep crouch- and gritting your teeth to shake off the sting. Straightening up, you heave a sigh as you walk about, stretching your muscles and try to work against the cramp as Gargles tries his best to keep a low profile; it shouldn’t be too long before you can get back in the air…

Although of course as soon as you think that, resting against a different formation nearby, you hear words coming from just beyond as someone crests the hilltop...great. Someone ELSE you have to wave off...

It doesn’t take you long to see that it’s a young man, casually riding along the pathway atop a large horse. Seems like it’s some sort of knight, in fact. Black haired, just under his adult years, is your guess. A bit of stubble, and wisened eyes despite his apparent youth. He wears a blue and gold cape, and the armor looks both fancy and functional, in lighter but similar colors. And next to him…on his shoulder.

A fairy. A small one, with brilliant blue hair and...well, you can’t see anything else at the moment. Fairies are small. Nonetheless, they seem to be chatting away about something or other...although of course, they get one look at you, and you can practically sense the tension ratchet up, even at this distance. They turn back to each other casually, but you’re not exactly new to this. Might as well try to focus and see what they’re saying…

“...doing anything out here?” that’s the fairy.

“Not to my knowledge,” the man responds. “Could be a scout.” Scout?

“They aren’t doing a great job of it…” the fairy says lightly. “But there’s something about them that gives me the shivers! Like a quaking puddle...maybe we should just ignore them?”

“No...look, just be careful. We should at least see if there’s something up. As annoying as it might be...” Ah, yeah, he’s riding up, for sure. When you look up, he’s got a casual expression on his face. “Excuse me, are you alright?”

“Just fine,” you mutter. You’re really not in the mood. “That all?”

“My apologies,” he says undeterred. “I was just on my way back to the capital. Saw you leaning over here, and by your posture I thought you might be injured. Perhaps you’d do well with a traveling companion?” He says it in a way that...well, you’re not positive, but it doesn’t sound as ‘voluntary’ as you’d say such questions are normally.

You shrug in response as you hold a hand to your pin, pretending to straighten the cloak. "Maybe. I've had a bit of a hard workout recently; do you have anything to help recover from that faster? I'd really appreciate that. And-” you pause, looking over to the thing on his shoulder- which notably seems to flinch and shift behind him a bit. "-is that a fairy?"

He looks to his side, to see his fearful friend; there’s a moment they lock eyes, and that’s when you use the moment to remove the pin quickly, before he turns back. “Ah. Yes, it is. I take it you’ve not seen one before?”

“Not so closely,” you admit. She’s clearly not a fan, likely because of the shadow she senses around you. You’re surprised, though, that she doesn’t seem to be able to pinpoint the source of her heebie-jeebies. Maybe she’s just a weak fairy…? “It’s a new experience.”

He smiles, though it’s a light one. “Well, she’s a close friend of mine. I’m Tyven. This is Walaci. And you mentioned something to help heal you?” He frowns. “I’m afraid I’m not much a healer, and my last bit of healing supplies were used in a small skirmish with wild beasts a few days ago. It’s why I’m keeping to the clearer areas.”

“A shame, but nice to meet you,” you say. “I’m Iva. And in addition to my last question. You know any place I can find a bite to eat that's decently priced? Or maybe an inn?”

“Ah, now that I can help with. You’re not more than a day and a half’s ride from Legosa, and they’ve got more than a few good inns with excellent dining. It’s a bit off the path, but...I could use a restock. Care to come with?” He asks again.

“W-well, if she doesn’t want to, we shouldn’t force her…” Walaci demurrs timidly.

You think about it for a moment or two...but no, it’s probably not a good idea to take the risk. And so you decide to wave them off. "Eh, that's all right. Just give me a suggestion on where to go for a room and who to buy from, and I'll be out of your hair in a bit."

Tyven is clearly not entirely happy about it, but there’s not really much he can do about your refusal unless he wants to come off as creepy and controlling. Walaci, on the other hand, gives a notable sigh of relief. “C’mon, Ty! She said no, so there’s no sense in trying to force it! Let’s go and be on our way!”

To your surprise, he seems reluctant. You’re not sure why, but nonetheless he resists her rather futile tugs for a moment, before nodding. “Alright, then. I trust you know to keep yourself...safe, at the least. As for a location...” and at that, he lights up a bit. “Tell you what, there IS a place I know that serves pretty good taurus haunches and seafood. It’s called the Windy Waves Inn. Their food is good, their rooms are fairly cheap- around a small silver a night, depending on amenities. As for buying from? I’d suggest anyone on the riverside, honestly. They tend to be the higher-valued merchants.”

Excellent. “You have my thanks, then. Have a nice day.” The man doesn’t really seem to want to leave, still, but at the physical urging of his companion, they move along, in a slightly different direction than you were heading. Maybe he decided it wasn’t worth it if you weren’t with him? Hm. Well, for now, you have at least confirmation that fairies get a chill down their spine around you, even if they can’t tell for certain you’re of the shadow, more or less. Good to know.

It’s a bit longer before you get comfortable again enough to return to Gargles’ back- to your surprise, it seems like the kid’s nodded off. With the bird casually resting on his shoulder, and pecking again, absorbing yet more mana from him. Man, that thing hasn’t stopped at all, huh? Ah well.

You saddle up once more, take a deep breath, and take off again. A day and a half’s ride should be a few hours by giant bat, so you’ll have to be careful to not land too close again.

---------

...especially when you break through the cloud cover to check, and see that the place is a touch bigger than you thought. It's very...long. Not a massive blob, but a LOT of it seems situated on the coast of the river, which is indeed rather large and impressive. Shining alabaster stone paints a brilliant white dash against the blue and green hills and you have to admit, the place is pretty.

"Alright, here we are," you mutter. "Gonna have to play this carefully...and you're going to have to get back in the bag," you quickly remind your passenger.

"Yet again, my existence. Naught but darkness. As is many, only living in delusion and squalor, no doubt." Okay, good, he's not scared. Ah, there's an empty cliffside not too far away, Gargles can hide out in there, and you can...ugh. You're gonna have to climb. There goes your muscles again.

"Right, then. We're headed down!" And with that, you dive. First priority? Inn. Second priority? Food. After that? Well, you'll have to give it some thinking...

Do we still have the violet cloak from knights of the new moon mission? The one we used to hide our spooky armor.
>>
>>4479429
That's been so long ago that we probably lost it in our bag.

Actually, does the kid even have a name? Should we give him one? I know we're using him as a generator, but since we've named our bat mount we might as well name the kid.

fair enough. for some reason i read that we wanted to give the kid the cloak the shadow king gave us.
>>

So you want to walk into the lands of followers of fairy faith while giving off strong menacing aura of a dragon? Seriously? The encounter with the knight was a good indicator that this is a bad idea.
>>
>>4479456
Nah, just something decent that can cover up his hair and wings in case we let him out again (for recharging or talking to or whatever other reason) and he's spotted, like with the wardens we dodged.
>>
>>4479458
Did he immediately peg us as a dragon? Nope. Did the fairy? She seemed to not have a clue what was up her ass with us, so nope.

Also, personally, it feels really cheap to just be taking off items that we specifically chose for this mission to reduce the penalty. I'd rather we just suck it up rather than don or duff what we picked.
>>
>>4479458
DESU, I don't see a large reason to be stealthy, we have an on call army if we need it, this town is not near a military base and we're fast as heck.
Our menacing aura keeps curious people at arms length, and those on the lookout for the shadow king and dragons are seeking their favor if the hint about a cult was anything to trust

Nothing bad happened at the church, we got out of it well enough with a charter coin to boot, and we learned not to enter any churches.

Still, I'd rather we just continue with what we're wearing. Constantly putting on and taking off stuff slows the game down.
>>
>>4479502
Night boss, see you tomorrow!
>>
>>4479507
I'd rather we not take things off too.
>>
>>4479507
Wait what's wrong with taking off some gear to lower risk rating? I'm fine with it, especially when we need to lay low for at least one day. And we aren't slowing down by taking off our costume pieces, the actions are still in one post.
>>
>>4479598
'slowing down the game' is a made up argument, anon just wants to stay as dragon girl because it's more fun. Being stealthy is boring and bothersome and bound to fail eventually. But it's still an advantage, so I don't want to give it up.
>>4479507
Being scary doesn't mesh well with gathering rumors and getting information out of shopkeepers, and there certainly will be more troublesome folks like the acolyte from the church or the knight and his fairy who could sniff us out and I don't want to bother with them right now.
>>4479473
>those on the lookout for the shadow king and dragons are seeking their favor if the hint about a cult was anything to trust
Okay, that's a good point, but I still think that the risk of being found out outweights it. It's not about being able to leave if things get bad here, it's about keeping the shadow king's awakening secret and preventing/delaying any attempts to increase the security of the lockstones.
>>

Well, this place...smells of fish, really. Kinda the first thing you notice. Then again, riverside, so kind of expected. Aside from that, it’s not too bad. Clearly a bustling place, though not to the extent of Gran Torun. Enough to be lively, though. There even seems to be a sort of miniature boating serving to take people from one end of the city to another. Neat, really!

Now, it’s just a matter of keeping your ears open...the riverside shops should be a good place to start.

A lot of them are simple stalls, but there’s also a good number of proper buildings as well; you can see things such as tailors, an inn (though not the Windy Waves), a bakery… it’s an impressive amount. You’re going to have to make sure that you’re careful about this. In the meantime...you can at least pretend to look at wardrobe fabric.

It’s about a half hour of perusing fabric and jewelry wares when you DO hear something; housewives, naturally. “...is getting so worrisome. I mean, if Elerta could get attacks, then who knows-”

“It wasn’t attacked, they stole something,” she corrects. “Some sort of...valuable treasure, or something. I dunno, I just know what my husband said. Heard it from one of the off-duty guards. That and there’s a bounty.” Bounty? “Y’know, for any information…” they continue to walk, and you have to admit, that’s an interesting thing to hear.

Thinking about it, you probably could at least patronize a couple of places around here. You could really do with a bedroll; maybe some other goods for camping out, too. You’re not sure what else you might be able to pick up, but if nothing else-

-you could probably do with a bath, somewhere down the line. Maybe later once your snooping is done for the day.

The picking up of camping goods fortunately doesn’t take exceptionally long; there’s a wide variety of them, and while nothing is particularly fancy, it’s clear that spending nights in the wilderness is commonplace still. You wind up spending just a single small silver for the whole lot, such is its ubiquity.

>Current Local Funds: 6 small silver, 7 large silver.

Unfortunately, you don’t hear anything particularly new after spending the rest of your day out there- by the time the sun’s starting to set, you’ve got a decent pack and something to work with regarding sleeping arrangements in the wild. Although, speaking of sleeping arrangements...time to look for that inn.

It takes some time to do so- but when you reach it, you have to admit you’re surprised...because the place looks like someone just made a damn good effort at tearing it down. Only a couple people are left, though; sweeping up broken window glass and generally trying to fix up the wrecked front. Curiously, although your first instinct is a bar brawl that got out of hand, you notice a few things- namely that the glass is broken INWARDS on one of the windows, and the inside of the inn from what you can see looks perfectly fine. No broken bottles, smashed chairs, or anything. The only damage seems to be the exterior, minus the one window. The door's in two pieces, there's some pockmarks of dented and cracked wood and -concrete-...there was a fight here.

The one sweeping the exterior turns his head towards you when he realizes someone's here- an older man with a full, grey mustache. He just grins lightly. "Lookin' for a stay or a snack? Don't mind the rubble- just had some rowdy folk make a bit of a mess. Happens here an' there. You kin' find the innkeep inside, takin' stock for the evenin' rush."

“Wait, just what happened here? That seems brutal for 'a bit of a mess’,” you note.

“Gahahah!” the old man laughs. “I s’pose in some respects it is, aye. But this was just a bit ‘o ruckus raisin’, nothin’ more. Some outta towners got into it bad with the local guard over somethin’ or other, and the folks in the guard had ta put a stop to it. Took some effort all in all I’m told, but don’tchu worry none- they’re under lock an’ key now.” Well, that’s good to know. Less rabble to put up with for now...but still. Wonder just who it was? “We get folks tryin’ all sorts hereabouts. A little pilferin’, or tryin’ ta swindle folks, or convince ‘em of crazy talk.” He snorts, shaking his head in bemusement. “Bafflin’, but tis what it is.”

“Oy, Peperin!” A lady’s voice calls out. “I’m not payin’ ya to jaw, I’m payin’ ya to clear up the front!”

“Oh, hold yer horses, I’m almost done!” he yells back with no real heat in his voice. “Sorry, kiddo, gotta get ta finishin’ this.” Right. You turn to the source of the voice; the lady in the doorway is larger, but not rotund. In a simple blouse and shirt with an apron, she’s looks at you with curiosity. “Oh? Something wrong, little miss?”

“No, I was just looking for a place to stay, if you don’t mind.” That brightens up her face considerably.

“Oh! Well then, sure thing! Come on in!” As you step past and she leads you to the counter, she explains her prices. “It’s a silver a night for our basic rooms, an’ that comes with dinner- but no breakfast. You’ll be payin’ for that separate, if you please. We also have our deluxe rooms at twice the price, but that comes with a washbasin, personal chest, and breakfast.”

“Lemme guess, what caused that?” she asks. “Some outta towners tryin’ to snoop around apparently. Someone heard that they’d stolen some sorta key.”

Mostly to look for "historians" and the like.

You missed washing. There’s even a semblance of soap here! Old school animal fat, you think, but there’s at least a sweet scent with it. Might not actually be much, but it’ll help. You honestly find yourself just enjoying the water for a time, letting your worries melt for a bit. As you mull on the situation, you find yourself forming a plan of attack almost casually.

Ahhhh...a good bath really does soothe the soul at times, huh?

After your pleasant times in the bath, you figure that it’s time to get back to business. And the first thing to do for that? Well, it’s been working so far. “Gartoum? Time to do the usual. I’ll be going somewhere in particular, though…”

“Ohhh? That so?” You hear as your shadow ‘friend’ forms out- a snake this time.

“Yup. I dunno what this ‘Dreger’s’ is, but I’m going to find out and pay a visit, maybe. See if anything interesting might be stored there.” You’ve really been stretching your stealth skills lately, huh? Well, no reason not to…

First thing’s first. Need to find out what Dreger’s IS. Might could just ask the innkeep, at this point...but you don’t think it’ll be too hard to ask someone less likely to see you again.

------------------

Indeed, it was easy enough, hardly any effort. Turns out Dreger's is in face 'Layle Dreger Jail'. Should've figured. It's not a massive place, at least- two stories, situated a bit aways from the main streets. From what you were told, it was situated next to the coast on a rocky shore, to make sure that the inmates couldn't escape but one way, unless they were mastermind enough to have a boat- which naturally was extremely hard with all the nautical security. You can see watchmen and patrollers already, in fact.

Honestly, all things considered, you might be able to just walk in and ask for visitation. You're here to snoop, not destroy for once. But that'd still mean certain parties would get a look at you- and if for whatever reason you needed to escape quickly, better that fewer people can say 'I last saw her...'

>Request a visit, claiming it's urgent and related to something the kids stole.
If they ask why, just say it is confidential and present the Holy Charter Coin to claim that we're from the fairy faith. They shouldn't refuse a request from a Church agent.
>>
>>4488511
>>4488562
Let's try this, although I doubt that showing the coin would be convincing enough. Maybe we should also show the strange medalion that we've looted from the mountain guards.
>>
>>4488511
>>4488562
Going with this.
>>4488589
We can do that if they still refuse entry - claiming to represent both Elertian Doorstoppers + the church and tracking down the culprits of the incident.
>>
>>4488589
>>4488738
Dont forget our high intimidation stat. That plus the medallions might give us access to the prisoners.
>>
I guess we will end up meeting the hero and his sidekick after all
>>
>>4488511
>>4488589
I agree, the charter coin seems to be given out to orphans and such. Not exactly "I'm with the church" credentials.
>>
>>4488511
>>4488589
>>4488887
>>4489920
Use both then? Seems "Secret Service" enough. Lockstone guards should be highly respected around here plus the Fairy church's authority.
>>
>>4489991
we could also try to fashion something with the VIP card and the medallion.
>>
>>4490146
The VIP card is from another universe and another organization, plus it’s advanced technology (relative to this universe, anyway). Its too much of a reach in logic.
>>
>>4490162
we still haven't seen if it changed shapes. Its just a simple matter of pulling the card out and see if it fits our needs or not.
>>
>>4490166
Anon, only Outgoers gear that was made in the Intersection can change shape, like special clothes from the shop, attuned weapons and stuff with camouflage like FutureSight and holding bag. Items that were made in the Intersection that doesn't have the special shapeshifting treatment stays the same: weapons, crystals, potions, mana condenser and other utilities and tools don't change form from universe to universe.
So stuff from other universes doesn't change: the book on summoning we've read earlier is still a book, so a card will still be a card.
>>
>>4489991
I feel like we're gonna roll up to the police station and flash them our chocolate money and KGB badge. Maybe we can postpone this until we find appropriate credentials or find another way in.

No, no. Better to just keep things steady. No need to risk the hard way when the easy way will get you what you want with a minimum of fuss. Ideally you’ll be in and out before too many people start asking questions, and if anything you have a little something that...well, you think it’ll be good enough as indication, but in case it isn’t, then...well, you’ll figure something out.

You walk down at a calm pace- the pair of guards near the gate eye you warily, but considering your casual behavior, it’s little more than good general caution. Naturally, when you get close, they block the way casually, crossing spears. “Halt. State your name and purpose.”

“Iva,” you state casually as you give them a hard look. “I’m under urgent orders- I understand there was an attempted theft not long ago by some kids?” When trying to bluff your way into a high-sec place, generally the best option, in your experience, is to make yourself as vague-but-leaning-truthful as possible. Have something in favor of your argument, but nothing that can vet you immediately. Most folks won’t risk the reprimand, no matter the scenario.

As you guessed, they give each other a look, then you. “Alright. From who?” they ask, a bit worriedly.

You reach into your bag, and take out the strange medallion you’d cribbed from the Lockstone guard. “This look any familiar?”

They both lean in, squinting. “Hmmm. Swear I seen that symbol before, but can’t place it…” one of them mumbles. “Right on the tip of my tongue…”

Hm. Can’t spare time for this. Reaching in quickly, you pull out the Charter Coin. “Does this image help any, or do I have to pull out even MORE proof?” You’re REALLY not sure it’s going to help any, but-

It’s this, though, that has the one of the left making a face. “Aah- hey, Jackie, I think she’s, uh…y’know.” He grimaces and raises his eyebrows in an expression that says he really should know (and probably you). “Islander, young, actin’ older than she looks? Ring any bells?” Yeah, this sounds like YOU should know.

“What are you talkin’ about, I- awk!” That was him getting elbowed. “Whazzat for!?”

“Never you mind him, miss, you go right ahead? Iva, was it? We’ll have to let the brass know you popped by, but, uh...tell ya what, actually, Howsabout I lead you in, since Jackie here don’t seem to know his arse from his elbow!” the last bit is stressed out, with the man giving Jackie a glare, who returns an incredulous and confused look. “You just follow me, we’ll getcha past the preliminaries.”

Well, that worked out splendidly. Not sure what they think you are, but...you can roll with it for now. In the meantime...

Oh snap! They are buddies with the Wardens. Expect another brawl lads, since some of their scouts saw us traveling with Gargles they just need to connect some dots. Unless the Drogans are still keeping the busted fortress under cover and not handing out bounties like the Elertians.

>>4490975

Sounds about right, I expect our shiny knight on a horse with a fairy didn't get a message here already, though he might've.
I wonder what mysterious rumors are circulating about us now.
> "Did you manage to get any information out of them about why they did it?"
>>
>>4490977
nah, probably some of the town guards have spotted us earlier this day because we're sticking out and mentioned to the other guards. Something like ethnic profiling due to their quarrel with their neighboring country.
>>4490975
> "Did you manage to get any information out of them about why they did it?"
>>
>>4490997
Well either way, I doubt the guard bought our implication about being an official, he probably hopes to get a promotion for sticking us in jail.
>>
>>4491011
I'm optimistic, can't exactly sneak into this base without Gart, even then that's too risky. So the only way left is too bluff our bums in.

Another (unrelated) note: The gauntlets are extremely powerful and it should work on us. It can heal BISECTED humans to whole, provided that the recipients are still alive. So don't be afraid to tank some shots, we have heals out the wazoo.
And speaking of heals, we still have the barrier to test out as well as the Z1.

We were also able to completely restore Prima's body after she's been blown to bits by mecha's cannons. So I believe it's possible to restore the turret, or at least salvage useful parts like its shield crystal or mana reactor. Also I think that the fairy boy should be doing that, since he has greater mana reserves and output, plus it's about time he proves his usefulness.
>>
>>4491076
i don't think we can restore the Z1. i'm gonna have to dig through the archives, but i remember that the spider lady(or bear?) who gave us the gauntlets told us that its restorative properties worked for recent harm and the Z1 is already way too gone.
>>
>>4492008
>restore the Z1
Wha? It's not broken, we haven't even used it. Maybe you meant the turret?
Also they were bears.
>>
>>4492021
the Z1 is the turret, isn't it?
>>
>>4492033
No, Z1 is an experimental anti-mage flying drone, it's based on Owlia's old X4 project that we saw in the mission where we've recruited them. And it was highly resistant to magic and firearms. Clockwork turret, on the other hand, was made for us by the protag of Artificer Quest (Owlia and Cylica were helping too) - it had two burst-fire clockwork rifles, a targeting system, shield crystal, and mana reactor to power all of it.
>>
There's another possibility that this town is under the cult's pocket. The merchant could have warned the locals to watch out for us beforehand.

Did you find anything?
