You are Nakashiri Koharu, a shinigami of the 5th Division under Captain Aizen Sōsuke, and your heart is beating fast and hard. You’re holding photographs of your adopted little brothers and sisters from the Rukongai with a signature on the other side, one that you know quite well.

Shiraka.

Your anger and your fear make your hands tremble and cold sweat appear all over your body. This is the family that Yukiko is from, and most likely through her, that family has now decided to take a jab at you. You’ve known that the nobility in Soul Society doesn’t exactly play nice, but you didn’t expect the problems to come to you this soon.

Emotionally you’d like to go and personally burn down their whole manor for even implying a threat to your adoptive younger siblings, but rationally you should stay away from anything that’d disturb the status quo, due to your own unusual attributes and your secret mission given by Urahara-sensei.

“T-Those… bastards,” you mutter under your breath and bite your lip.

‘Okay, think this through. What options do you have?’ you think to yourself.

Well, the most appealing one with burning everyone associated alive is pretty much out of the picture, but you could pay the family a visit yourself. At least that way you might figure out what exactly they want of you. Or you could lay low, keep to yourself. So far they’ve only given you more of a warning than any demand, and waiting would give you more time to figure out more options.

You also briefly consider consulting your captain and mentor, Aizen. You suspect that he’s a lot smarter than what anyone would expect, and much more resourceful than anyone could imagine. If there’s anyone who’d know how to help, it would be him.

Of course, you need to sleep, but you doubt you’ll get any sleep until you make some kind of a decision.

>Go directly to the Shiraka Manor, confront them. If they’re going to threaten you, you’d like to at least know the demands.
>Lay low. They’ll no doubt send you another message in time if you don’t go directly to them, but you’ll have more time to find other options.
>Tell Aizen about this. He might be able to help you, and at least he’ll know that a major noble family has their eyes on you.

Welcome to a new thread of Advent Soul Quest, first of 2021!

>What is this?
A quest based on the setting of Bleach. Deviation from canon depends on the MC’s influence, and some other additions are to be expected as well.
>Who are we?
Nakashiri Koharu, a former 10th grade (high schooler) trap that has just freshly joined the ranks of the Gotei 13 in the 5th Division.
>When are we?
Currently it is the start of Autumn 1982, ~19 years prior to the events of canon.
>Dice? Challenge?
Prompted after deciding on an action. Usually 3d10, best of 3 (Bo3), against a set DC and sometimes a crit-DC. Write-ins may affect the DC as well. If a character stat (in the char sheet) is directly related to the action, it will substitute the lowest die in rolls if it is higher (will be always explained when prompted to roll).
>Updates?
So far it’s been 20 minutes per post at best. Generally I promise an update per hour at the very least. I post whenever I start writing, or if I’m held up for some reason. My timezone is UTC+2.
>I have questions!
Ask away and I’ll do my best to answer.
>What do?
Have fun, vote on what feels the best, roll some dice and chill.

The night passes quite uneventfully, accompanied only by the snoring of your fellow shinigami. It’s a miracle you manage to get sleep in these barracks.

As much as you’d like to charge into their manor, you realize you’re out of your league here. So you turn to the only source of safety you have in the Seireitei: Aizen.

You hasten towards his humble office and just as you are about to announce yourself behind it, the door opens and you find yourself face to face with Lieutenant Hinamori.

“E-Eh?”
“E-Eh?”

You both exclaim and back off a little.

“How long were you there?!” she points at you with a slightly accusative tone.

“I just arrived,” you wave your hands in front of you. “I didn’t hear anything if that’s what you’re asking.”

Hinamori is at a loss of words, when Aizen laughs lightheartedly and comes closer. “Koharu-san really did just arrive, I sensed it,” he smiles and puts a hand on Hinamori’s shoulder.

“With you both here now, I’ve actually got a suggestion.”

“Y-Yes?”
“Y-Yes?”

You and Hinamori give each other a short side glare.

“Momo-chan here is an incredible kidō expert,” he says, patting the hand on Hinamori’s shoulder, and then extends it slightly towards you. “Koharu-san has quite the aptitude to take familiar abilities and apply them on new ones.”

“How about you both help each other?” he smiles.

Hinamori isn’t really that thrilled about it, but puts up a genuine smile somehow. “If Aizen-sama thinks it’s for the best, then it is!”

You scratch your cheek.

“That sounds great and all,” you start, “but Captain Aizen, I'm afraid I can’t focus on training right now. I’ve… I’ve got a problem on my hands, and I hoped you could help me.”

“A problem? What kind?” Aizen narrows his eyes and asks.

“A… personal one,” you scratch the back of your head, hoping for him and Hinamori to understand that you’d like privacy. However, based on how Momo’s face is slowly turning more red, you realize that she has very likely misunderstood the situation.

“Very well,” Aizen smiles and turns to face Hinamori again. “Be sure to keep in touch with Koharu-san, I’m sure you’ll find great progress together.”

Hinamori, although unwillingly, finally leaves, and you find yourself once again with Aizen. You glance upwards, sensing your surveillance, then back at Aizen. You think he realizes what you’re asking, and simply nods.

“I’ll cut to the chase, then,” you grasp tightly on your shihakusho. “A major family is threatening me, possibly blackmailing.”

Aizen’s face grows more serious. “You’re certain? Why do you think they would do that?”

“Because of a stupid rivalry that a girl from them had with me at the Shin’ō Academy,” you explain. “She hates my guts, and the fact that somebody from the Rukongai became a shinigami before her.”

“And you think that is motivation enough for them to threaten, or blackmail you?”

You consider that question. Sure, Yukiko is quite petty and stubborn. She’s not bright or resourceful enough though to do all of this however, meaning somebody else in her family is behind this.

“If I may ask, what did they threaten you with?”

You think about it, and you can’t find any reason why you couldn’t tell him about the kids. Especially when the only evidence is the photographs with them. As such, you show them to Aizen.

“When I passed onto the afterlife, I met some orphans, after whom I started to look after. Kind of amusing that I was the most recent one to come there, yet I became something like an older sibling to them.”

You tell Aizen some more about your life in the Rukongai, of the hardships and the joys you experienced together.

“I.. I care for them, I do not want for anything to happen to them. Especially not because of me.” You find small droplets form at the corners of your eyes, despite being able to keep your expression quite composed.

A moment of silence passes between you two.

“The laws protecting the nobility of Soul Society are much stricter and comprehensive than those of shinigami,” Aizen sighs. “Without direct evidence of something that breaks their laws, nothing can be done.”

“I-I’m supposed to just sit by and watch?!” you burst out slightly, before shaking your head. “Sorry…”

“What I’m trying to say, Koharu-san, is that without careful consideration, action against them may make you a criminal.”

Hearing this makes you bitter. Especially when you’re supposedly here to help save Soul Society from a danger lurking inside. How can you do that, when this society itself works against you?

“Can’t.. can’t you help me?” you plead.

Aizen closes his eyes.

“If you wish to remove the Shiraka, I cannot,” he begins, sternly, “but I can help keep attention away from you.”

“You have to understand though, that just talking about this is justification enough to be condemned.”

You swallow hard. “I-I understand.”

Another moment of silence passes.

“I personally recommend to wait and see what they want with you. Every noble family wants more power, this also includes collecting shinigami in higher positions.”

“You think.. they would want to force me to become their retainer?”

Aizen nods. “You won’t have a choice, but consider it this way: you will have access to their manor, and given your sharp senses, there’s a lot of things you could find there. An enemy that thinks they have you under control is a great advantage, Koharu.”

“So become their unwilling servant, to find a way to get back at them?”

Aizen nods once more. “You already have a powerful tool at your side Koharu, more powerful than anybody in the Seireitei can imagine.”

“But if you do go about doing that,” Aizen narrows his eyes even more, “I recommend practicing first, on suitable targets.”

You don’t know how to respond to that, at all. So silence ensues, until you thank Aizen for his time and help.

Everything feels quite surreal as you leave Aizen’s office and back into the mundane shinigami life of Soul Society. Life.. or rather, afterlife gets a whole different aspect to it when you have to be afraid for the safety of your loved ones.

You decide to focus on duty, and go about finding your division’s Lieutenant, Hinamori Momo. Who knows, maybe you’ll actually get an honest friendship with her with this training.

You find her tending to a garden of all things, though you do figure it fits her much more than sitting in an office. Though now that you look at it a bit closer, you realize this is a garden that Aizen personally put up, with special plants and herbs.

So even at work, she’s all over Aizen’s stuff, you sigh.

“Hinamori-senpai,” you say to catch her attention, giving her a light scare.

“K-Koharu-chan?” she blinks.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. So uhm, would you like to do some training now?”

“Ah, well,” Hinamori massages her neck as she looks around at the garden. “I’ve still got a lot to tend to, you see…”

You close your eyes. “Ah, I understand. Aizen-taichō will have to wait with our results then…”

“I-I can finish this later! Let’s go!” Momo-chan completely changes her mind and drags you off towards a courtyard with a shunpo.

As you arrive at the place, your head is swirling. Has Momo-chan always been this fast? Maybe her being a Lieutenant is no joke afterall, despite all the gossip in your division.

You dust yourself off and cough out some dust that got in your lungs.

“S-Sorry,” Momo-chan smiles sheepishly.

“It’s alright,” you cough some more.

The two of you start the ‘training,’ with the kidō first. Despite Hinamori’s aptitude and expertise in the field, things aren’t going quite well. You realize that it’s because she’s distracted, and you have a strong suspicion on what it is.

“Okay, just spit it out,” you finally say as you have enough of the charade. “Clearly something is bothering you, and we’ll get nowhere like this.”

“W-What? It’s nothing!” she denies.

“Momo-san,” you say, deciding to address her less formally, and more casually, “I’m quite good at sensing almost every possible thing. Please, just… be honest.”

Momo sighs. “I’m that obvious, huh?”

You nod. The two of you sit down on a bench, and look over at the sky.

“Koharu-chan,” Hinamori finally speaks, “Just… what is your relationship with Aizen-sama?”

So it is envy afterall.

“If I’d have to pick just one word, it’d be… Mentor.”

“Mentor?” Hinamori asks, to which you nod.

“I’ve learned a lot from him, even while I was at the academy, and I truly believe there is much more that I can learn from him. But it’s not just a relationship of a student and a teacher,” you explain, after which Momo turns to look at you more intently.

You sigh and burst out in a small laugh. “He’s kind of like a father figure to me, you know? Somebody I can trust to be on my side and by my side, and not against me.”

“I… I know exactly how you feel, Koharu-chan!” she cheers up, and looks intently at you. “He’s amazing, isn’t he? There’s nobody better than Aizen-sama!”

You blink as she starts fawning all over Aizen in front of you. “R-Right?”

“He’s so charming, he’s so classy, he’s so caring!” she continues on. “I’m… I’m sorry I felt displaced with you, but I’m so happy now that we can share these feelings!”

Oh.

Oh no.

She’s dragging you into the Aizen fanclub.

Sure, you have utmost respect for Aizen, but not this childlike obsession that Hinamori has. Unfortunately though, there’s little you can say or do now that wouldn’t damage your relationship, so you decide to just be quiet and go along with her antics. Perhaps with this drive and connection, you’ll be able to actually train efficiently.

“Yosha! Let’s get to training, Koharu-chan! Let’s make Aizen-sama proud!”

“Kidō… I see it myself more like molding clay,” Hinamori begins the training session by explaining her own view and usage of the art.

“The numbered kidō system is good, don’t get me wrong! But it’s restrictive in a way..”

“What do you mean?” you ask.

“Maybe it’s easier to put it this way: have you ever used an unnumbered kidō?”

Your eyes widen, partially remembering Urahara’s explanation of reishi in general. “Reishi pads,” you realize, to which Hinamori cheerfully nods a few times.

“Exactly! This means though that there’s no ready incantations for such techniques and they’re much harder to focus on, but I think they’re nice to use alongside numbered kidō,” Hinamori explains.

“It sounds like you have something figured out?” you probe with a soft smile.

Hinamori looks like she gets serious, despite her smile, and nods. “I can show you! But I need some targets!”

You help her bring some six wooden logs to the field, and then stand aside as you watch her performance. Wordlessly, but with a brief shout, she takes a few flash steps around the targets, weaving orange, thick string-like kidō between and around the targets, which soon interconnect by themselves, forming something like a chaotic spiderweb.

“I call this a kidō web!” Momo explains, “I know it’s not a very imaginative name, but it works quite nicely! Especially when you combine it with numbered kidō.”

“Hadō #12: Fushibi!” Hinamori exclaims, and taps a finger on the string still attached to her vice-captain badge, and the whole net immolates into a blazing inferno. There’s absolutely nothing left of the wooden logs she used as targets, not even ashes.

You whistle and clap your hands. “That’s amazing!”

“I-I guess it is!” Momo giggles awkwardly. “I’ll do my best to help you figure it out!”

“Right, let’s try it then!” you say.

You don’t recall too well just what exactly Hinamori did, but you got a good feel of it through your reikaku. In a way, the whole idea of a kidō feels eerily familiar, so you decide to follow through on that instinct.

“Right, so uhm, what you need to do…” Momo-chan starts to slowly explain, but you’re already way ahead. You clench your hand into a fist, focus your reiryoku on it, and reopen, finding a similar type of sticky reishi material in it.

“Actually, Momo-chan, could you bring a pair of those wooden targets? I think I got it.”

“E-Eh?!” Momo exclaims, but does as you ask of her. Once they’re in place, you casually walk over to one and touch it with the same hand. True enough, the reishi sticks to it, and as you move towards the other, more of it is ‘pulled’ out of your hand, forming a similar thing like what Hinamori produced, only purple, and it doesn’t branch out on its own. Only after you apply some clearer focus to that aspect does the purple reishi string turn into a proper web.

Hinamori is stunned, enough that she falls on her knees. “I-It took me years to figure it out…”

“It’s… don’t worry about it Momo-chan, I’m just better with the ‘shapeless’ stuff than the orderly. If you didn’t show it as well as you did, I doubt I’d be able to do this,” you try to console her.

“Fushibi, right?” you wonder quietly, and speak the full incantation for it. “Hadō #12: Fushibi!”

The string starts burning, but doesn’t explode like Hinamori’s, so the effect isn’t exactly that useful. The net doesn’t even really break yet despite burning, though that might be because your Fushibi isn’t strong enough compared to the web of reishi. However, the more you feel the kidō net, the more you realize something, that you can’t exactly explain. You ‘feel’ the wooden targets much better as they are connected to you by string.

You put the theory to a test and send a focused pulse of reiatsu through the net, and true enough, the wooden targets splinter lightly.

Your eyes widen. “It.. conducts reiatsu!”

“Thank you, Momo-chan,” you say as you go help her up from the ground, “This was only possible because of you.”

“T-Thanks, Koharu-chan… I’m just… frustrated. To see you do so much progress in such a short time, while I…” she says as she quickly dries the little tears forming at the corners of her eyes, before lifting her face to look at you directly.

“Um… Koharu-chan? A-Are your eyes okay?”

“Huh?” you blink. Rather quickly Momo takes out a mirror from a pocket of hers. Where she managed to store that thing is beyond your comprehension.

Looking into it, however, you see that your eyes have lightly faded into the same color as when you use Hanran, just to a much lesser effect.

“Uhhhh-” you hastily search for an explanation, “I have this, uh, weird illness, but it’s nothing serious. Just ignore it, I’m okay!”

Momo-chan doesn’t look too convinced despite your smile and laugh. She doesn’t pursue the topic beyond that however.

“A-Anyway, allow me to help you out in turn!” you exclaim and pat her shoulder as she pockets the small mirror. “Maybe I can help you advance somehow. Aizen-taichō has great hopes for our training, right? I’m sure he knew something should happen by making us train together.”

“You’re right!” Momo-chan instantly cheers up, “Aizen-sama believes in us!”

“R-Right!” you nod, but then instantly get stumped. “I’m not sure what exactly I can offer though… maybe hakuda, but I'm not an expert in that.”

“Aizen-sama praised you for your innovativeness!” Momo points out. “Well… maybe you can help me with my zanpakutō?” she suggests.

“Zanpakutō?”

“My zanpakutō, Tobiume, she… well…” Momo hesitates, and sighs. “I’m not sure how to proceed with her.”

You scratch the back of your head. “What does your zanpakutō do?”

Hinamori pokes her index fingers against each other. “She.. shoots fireballs.”

You nod, sort of waiting for more details, but that seems to be it. Based on what you’ve read and heard about zanpakutō’s, there should be an array of abilities, or rather applications of the base ability, multiple techniques.

“Maybe you should show me first what you can do? Then we can think together about what can be improved or changed,” you suggest.

Hinamori agrees with a nod and unsheathes her zanpakutō, holding it to the side of her body.

“Snap, Tobiume!” she exclaims, and pink swirling around the blade transforms it into its shikai form. The traditional katana morphs into a double-edged blade, and two jutte-like prongs appear on it, on opposite sides of the blade. The release of reiatsu that accompanies her is good, but quite soft, somewhat mimicking her gentle nature.

This training session feels somewhat like a P.E. class from highschool, with you carrying more wooden log targets from the nearby storage. With them once again in place, Hinamori shows Tobiume’s ability. A fireball forms at the blade, and Momo sends it flying with it, like swinging a baseball bat. As the burning orb is flying, it releases a sound not unlike a seagull cry.

The target explodes into minuscule, burning pieces, before disappearing into dust, with a shockwave causing you to flinch.

“T-That was quite a blast,” you praise her. “What have you tried to do with it, on top of shooting it?”

Hinamori blinks as she tilts her head. You feel like facepalming. Has.. has she really even tried to do anything with it? One can’t really gain any progress if they don’t even try to do anything…

“I mean,” you try to get your bearing and to figure out a way to break it down to her, “your zanpakutō has those prongs, right? They look like you could catch a sword or two with them.”

“REALLY?” Hinamori exclaims in joy. “I never thought about it like that!”

>1/3
>>
“Would your fireball work if shot at point blank? Say, while your enemy’s sword is stuck in those prongs?”

Momo’s jaw drops. “That’s… I… uh…”

You raise your hands. “I’m not going to volunteer as a test subject for that, that’s for sure. I’d probably die. But you could bug somebody who’s tougher than me.”

“Your zanpakutō, it’s essentially a kidō type, right?” you continue with your thoughts. “I don’t know, could you maybe-”

“-control it like kidō?” Hinamori finishes your thought with enlightened eyes, and throws herself at you for a hug. “Koharu-chan, you are a genius!”

“I-If you think so,” you blush and avert your eyes. “You’re already really good with kidō. I’m sure you could shape that fireball in various ways, the sky's the limit for you.”

“You’re absolutely right! Oh by the Reiō, I haven’t felt this motivated since my academy years! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

“I-It’s fine,” you say as you try to pry her off of your body. “I think this is good enough for today, but if you’d like, we can meet up again for training, see how we’ve developed?”

Hinamori nods. “That’s a promise!” Momo extends her closed hand with only her pinkie extended. You sigh with a smile, and extend your own hand.

“Promise.”

A week passes as you tend to your rather dull shinigami duties and continue to practice with Hinamori. On one morning, you are summoned by Aizen to his office.

“You called for me, Aizen-san?”

“Ah, Koharu-san, please, come in,” he welcomes you, and you close the sliding door behind you.

“I have a favor to ask of you. I wanted to visit our friend at the forest today, but my duties won’t permit me. Perhaps you would like to go in my stead?” he smiles at you. You find it slightly odd that he actually is busy, but shrug it off. It’s not like you know just how much work captain’s have, though you’ve heard that some like to dump most of it to their lieutenants.

“What would I do about my duties?” you ask.

“I can arrange for another officer to deal with that,” he waves off. “I think this would be a great opportunity for you as well, in more ways than one. There’s only so much you can learn from paperwork and patrolling.”

“Of course, this is only if you want to.”

“If you see it as beneficial, I’ll of course do it, Aizen-san. Is there anything… specific that you’d like for me to accomplish, or am I acting fully at my own discretion?”

Aizen shakes his head. “Only make sure our friend is secure. Otherwise… do as you please, Koharu, without reservations,” he says and glances shortly towards the ceiling, and back to you.

You bow in gratitude, and leave his office. Making sure you have Lizzy with you, you finally dare to take him a little more out into the open, now that you don’t have anyone tailing you.

“I want you to meet somebody,” you smile as you rub the lizard’s mask with your finger, as you soar through the air with flash steps.

The single digit districts go by, then the tens, twenties, until you’re finally home, in the fifties. Last time you went straight to the forest with Aizen, as it was very much a business trip, but now you are on your own, and at your own pace.

“Maybe,” you think aloud as you consider visiting the kids once more. Seeing them safe would bring you relief and joy, especially since you haven’t heard from the Shiraka since you got those photos.

On the other hand, would it be wise to go see them at all?

You haven’t seen the kids in almost a year, since December, you won’t pass this chance up.

However, you’re keenly aware of the possibility that the Shiraka family has set up something, either to monitor them, or to make sure you don’t meddle. You do your best at suppressing your reiatsu and entering the Nakashiri district. You even find some sack cloth that you wrap around yourself to hide your shihakusho.

The Rukongai is unchanging, a fact that is quite unfortunate. Ordinary souls live out their afterlife either in hard work to provide nutrients for the shinigami, or in poverty. It isn’t a wonder that children dream of becoming shinigami to escape either dull fate.

A fate that you were never destined for from the start, and a fate that your adoptive siblings too, wish to avoid by following in your footsteps.

As you approach the area with your house, you keep out of sight and use all of your senses to their full capacity. Some of the children are inside, but others are somewhere outside, based on their faint, but very familiar reiatsus. Nobody ever stops by the narrow alley which leads to the humble house you built together, so it became very quickly evident that there are four people standing watch.

You clench your fist, as you suppress the anger boiling inside of you. You swear, if they even as much as touch them, they will find no peace in this afterlife, or their next life.

These are regular souls however, with ordinary weapons. While they’re quite threatening to the commoners of Rukongai, they are nothing against a shinigami. One of them seems quite capable though, most likely the leader of this bunch.

If they go missing or get alarmed though, no doubt the Shiraka family will notice.

>Sneak through the rooftops and see the kids now.

As much as you’d like to just go and see your little brothers and sisters, you hate the idea of being possibly interrupted and putting the kids in danger.

So you make a decision.

Aizen talked about finding ‘suitable targets’ for practicing it, and you’re convinced these four bastards are just that. You find one of those crooks standing at the mouth of an alleyway, watching the entrance your kids always take to enter the house. It isn’t hard at all to get behind him.

“Mediate, Naimen no Daiza,” you whisper, and your zanpakutō transforms once more into the chalice hilt you’re accustomed to. With a short yank backwards and your other hand to the crook’s mouth, you place the flat side of the blade against the man’s body, letting what little reiatsu he has seep into the blade.

The familiar sensation pulls you into the lucid mind of this guy. The mindscape is changing, partially reflecting the actual place where you are standing with him, and his memories and thoughts twisting everything bit by bit.

“Zilya,” you call inwards, “that one time you implied you could help me make him a servant?”

Her voice slowly fades in with some echo. “Why, yes. You need only will it, darling.”

“Right,” you close your eyes, and focus on Naimen no Daiza to force your changes into this mind.

You want to make him your servant, to follow your every bidding, to become a tool of your revenge. You feel a cold shiver down your spine as you think about just what you are doing, the implications of it. You are overriding another being’s will, removing the freedom that you yourself coveted for all of your childhood.

Was this right?

“Idiot! Don’t hesitate!”

The mindscape starts to twist rapidly into darker themes, and you panic just enough to disengage your own mind with the crook’s.

Opening your eyes, you find the guy’s own eyes rolled back and his mouth foaming. Instinctively, you step back, and the man falls to his knees.

You have a really bad feeling about this, as you feel his emotions in chaos, and something sinister but familiar happening to his chest. He draws his sword as he gets up, and walks into the street, laughing like a madman, scaring the everloving shit out of civilians.

“Shit,” you curse under your breath. This isn’t at all what you wanted, especially not a volatile, dangerous madman close to your siblings’ house.

Dealing with him would be easy for you, but dealing with him directly would of course lead to questions. You could wait and see if the other three crooks will react in some way and deal with him, but can you really trust them to do that?

Especially when there’s a chance he’ll hurt your brothers and sisters?

You are Nakashiri Koharu, and you’ve just fucked up.

Your aim was to make this man working for the Shiraka to become your pawn through the use of your zanpakutō’s shikai ability of mediation.

Hesitation however, caused it to go wrong. Very wrong.

You don’t know what changes exactly you’ve forced upon that soul’s mind, but he’s become volatile and a liability. He’s walking down the street with a drawn sword, eyes completely open and a menacing grin on his face.

Despite your instincts to panic, you manage to keep a calm head, stay hidden and observe for now, ready to spring into action if or when a civilian gets hurt. You’ve trained to fight hollows, not people, and you’re afraid of crossing that line.

Yet, if things get really bad, you resolve yourself to stain your zanpakutō with non-hollow blood if it comes to it. For the sake of your siblings, and the innocent.

The madman continues to seek a target among the remaining terrified and paralyzed rukongai citizens, when the three other men, tasked with watching the kids, finally show up to figure out what’s wrong.

“Sanjuro! Get a hold of yourse-” one of them approaches him, but gets a swing in return by the madman he tried to address, getting a shallow cut to his chest.

“Grab him!” another one of them shouts, and they grapple him from all sides.

However, you get a sickening feeling in your stomach as you realize that the madman’s, Sanjuro’s, reiatsu is rising.

And it’s rather malevolent.

>Go in and restrain Sanjuro. The three others may be your enemies, but they don’t deserve to die for your mistakes.

You hesitate again, juggling between acting now and observing for a little longer. He’s contained for a moment, but as his reiatsu increases, he manages to push one, then another, and finally the third person off of him, as he screams and laughs incomprehensibly.

And as he’s about to strike his comrade, you spring to action.

“Bakudō #4: Hainawa!” you proclaim, as you shunpo behind the madman and bind him with the crackling yellow energy, binding him, and leave the same instant with another shunpo. You doubt they could get a proper look at you while on the ground and with your speed, so you just focused on removing the threat. There’s only one place that you can trust will have the privacy you need, and that is the Wailing Forest.

As you finally stop, Sanjuro’s body is half-conscious on the ground from all that rapid movement that an average soul is unused to. Unfortunately, your reikaku still shows that his reiatsu is building up. You swear his twitching body is larger than before, and you finally notice what’s been bugging you for a while now:

His chest.

It looks like a part of it is peeling away, with only blackness revealed underneath it.

“A h-hollow hole?!” you exclaim as you realize what it is. This man is becoming a demihollow, and at this rate he might become a full-on hollow, unless you do something.

You take a deep breath as you calm your nerves, and repeat words of wisdom.

What would Aizen do?

Drawing Naimen no Daiza, you release its shikai.

“Please, let this work,” you mutter as you press the flat side of the blade on Sanjuro’s head.

What you find inside his head is rather terrifying, but thanks to your experience with Lahela, it is quite mild. His memories and thoughts are a mess, shifting the mindscape from one scene to another, where he is killing and slaughtering others. Past victims, friends, even.. his family.

“P-Please… somebody… please, make this end!”

You swallow hard. He’s going through a personal hell, thanks to your actions. With a resolve to save his life, you set out to heal the mental damage you’ve caused.

“Celaris, please… aid me,” you whisper as you approach Sanjuro.

“As you wish, Koharu.”

The source of his hollowfication is the lingering reiryoku linked to Zilya, which slowly corrupted his soul, twisting it and destroying his heart. With the help of Celaris, you draw it out of Sanjuro.

The mindscape shifts and finally shatters, leaving only pitch black. The sword in his hand falls from his grip and disintegrates, and he himself falls down on his knees, sobbing. You stand behind him, feeling pity and regret.

“Sanjuro, it’s… all over now.”

He turns his head slowly to look at you. “Y-You?”

“You are safe now,” you kneel beside him and put a hand on his shoulder. Sanjuro keeps weeping, as he puts his own hand on yours.

“T-Thank the Reiō, I was… I killed… so many…”

He tells you about all the people he has killed, justifying it as surviving himself, to get food for his sick son. How the threshold to kill only went lower, until after the death of his son he lost sight of why he was killing in the first place. Listening to this, you feel tears run down your cheeks as well. You are somewhat happy however, that somehow, you managed to turn a mistake that put him through hell into a cathartic resolution for him.

Of course, he does not know you were the cause of this peril, and despite your guilt, you do not tell him. However, you can’t find the resolution in your heart to tamper with his mind any more, despite the fact that he’s at his most vulnerable right now.

By the time Sanjuro comes to himself, you’ve dispelled Hainawa and sealed Naimen no Daiza, and have brought some fruit of the forest for both of you to eat, making sure they’re not the Queen’s berries.

“Here,” you offer him some of the fruit.

“You.. you’re-” he realizes as he speaks. “You’re that Nakashiri girl? We’re..”

“Supposed to be on the lookout for me?” you say, pushing the fruit into his hands. “I know.”

“Why did you save me?”

“I’m a shinigami. You are not my enemy, hollows are,” you explain despite that not being wholly true. “You may be doing something I don’t like, such as possibly being a threat to people I care about, but I’m no murderer.”

At that statement, Sanjuro looks to the side, in shame.

“I will never pick up a sword again,” he says as he clenches his fist. "Never."

You take a bite of a fruit as you consider what to say.

“Carrying a sword should have a reason, a purpose,” you offer him the thought. “I carry mine to protect others, especially those I care about.”

You find yourself thinking about your purpose in life, and afterlife. Yes, you’re protecting your adoptive siblings, but on the larger scale, you’re protecting a lot more too, as well as your dear friends from the living realm. By being with Akane and Chie, you put them at risk of being attacked by hollows, so when you were given the choice to go to Soul Society by Urahara, you took it. By having ties with the Rukongai children and defying the social and political norms of Seireitei, you’ve put them in danger.

Looking at your zanpakutō, you realize just how much weight it holds at the end of the day.

“I know the guilt you feel, I experienced it with you when I pulled you out of there. You can’t undo the past, but you can affect the future.”

You face him properly now as you sit, putting the peels of the fruit you just ate to the side. “Those children are important to me, Sanjuro. I would like to ask you to pick up your sword one more time, to protect them.”

“Do it to honor your son.”

Sanjuro is stricken by your words, and stays silent for a long while. Finally, you see him find his resolve.

“I will, shinigami from Nakashiri,” he bows his head.

“...You can just call me Koharu.”

“Very well, Koharu-san. I don’t know what will happen however. If… if I remember right, I attacked my comrades.”

He makes a point, he did attack them, something the three others will no doubt report to the Shiraka. If he returns, there’s going to be questions and possibly he’ll be moved elsewhere, or even punished.

“You could live with the kids, perhaps move with them to a safer place,” you suggest. “They sure as hell deserve a proper parental figure, you know.”

Sanjuro scratches the back of his head. “A parent… Even though I was tasked with…”

You shake your head. “That’s in the past now. If the Shiraka were ready to threaten children just out of spite, I don’t want to imagine what they’d do with those who defy their wishes.”

Sanjuro shudders at the thought. “Good point. Maybe… maybe it’s not so bad, starting a new life, after all that madness. I guess I finally snapped after all those years.”

You remain silent about your part in this, feeling only a stone of guilt for orchestrating his temporary descent into insanity.

Returning back to the Nakashiri district from the Wailing Forest, you find that two of the three other bandits have gone. One most likely to inform their masters of what has transpired, while another is probably looking for Sanjuro. This is fortunate in that it leaves only one of them watching the house you built with the kids over a year ago.

Entering through the secret backdoor, the kids get scared out of their pants before realizing it’s you and being overcome with joy. It looks like everyone is present too.

“Onee-sama!” they all exclaim as they flock around you for a hug, and you just pat their heads with a warm smile.

“Hey there, I came for a visit!”

Toru-kun however goes on guard the moment he sees Sanjuro. “G-Guys! Be on guard, one of those thugs followed Koharu-oneesama!” he exclaims as he takes a knife from his pocket and aims it at him.

“Relax!” you calm him down, “He’s not an enemy… wait, you know who he is?”

“For sure! Him and three others have been creeping up on us for a while now!” Toru-kun explains, still keeping the knife pointed at Sanjuro. “I’m sure he wants to kidnap us… or something!”

You can’t help but sigh in relief. Maybe even if you didn’t do something, the kids could survive and adapt. “Well, this is Sanjuro, and… well?” you say and look at him.

“Hey, uh.. I’ve… I want to help you guys,” he says, looking especially at Toru-kun. Looking closer, you have a suspicion that the boy reminds him of his late son.

“It doesn’t look like we got off to a good start, but if you can, give me a chance, okay? I.. I want to do the right thing for once in my life.”

His speech is convincing enough for Toru-kun, as he lowers the knife. “Well, if oneesama thinks you’re okay, then you have to be… jiisan.”

“Jiisan?!” Sanjuro furrows his brows, but the room fills with laughter before he manages to say anything.

As the kids got to know Sanjuro a little more, it becomes apparent just how much of a dad he really is. The kids also really like him, and he’s great with all of them. Although they met only today, you already see that him and Toru-kun may become quite close in time.

This is good, as now you have somebody you can reasonably trust with the kids, even if this wasn’t your initial intention. You feel a little baffled too by just how easily you were going to brainwash and… enslave this man.

Is this.. really how you want to use your powers?

You shake off those thoughts for now. As much as you’d like to abstain from amoral acts, the Shiraka are a great reminder that you will have to use those powers against this system of overprotected nobles.

This brings you to another thought: Should you ignore the Shiraka now that you’ve somewhat secured the people they were threatening to hurt, or should you keep them in the belief that you don’t know about this happening? If you were to become their retainer, pretending to be afraid for the kids, you could keep them on their toes even more, and jump ship at any point.

You’re pulled out of your thoughts as Sanjuro walks up to you, and asks about the whole moving process. It’s best to do sooner than later, with only one person present, so you explain the situation roughly to the kids.

“I will figure out a way to find you, don’t worry, okay?” you assure them. With one last group hug, you send them with Sanjuro on their way while you see to their immediate safety from above. You’d have loved to spend even more time with them, but this will have to do.

Once you can guarantee their safety, then you can relax with them.

With all that business out of the way, you can finally have some peace of mind. While you only met Sanjuro today, you have the confidence that he will really keep the kids safe after what he’s gone through mentally. Sure, you orchestrated it all and the whole thing leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but you justify it with the fact that other alternatives would have possibly been much more cruel.

Leaving a life of murder and servitude behind to become an adoptive dad doesn’t really sound that bad in the end.

Now you find yourself at the edge of the Wailing Forest, the place where Aizen primarily sent you off to, in order to check up on Lahela. You can somewhat sense her, quite faintly, amid the background reiatsu of the Queen’s roots and growth.

You haven’t seen Lahela in a week or so now, since her transformation into what Aizen calls an arrancar. You hope that regaining some of her humanity is serving her well. Aizen and you offered the same treatment for the Queen as well, but she was very skeptical. You’re also really worried about the possibility of her accepting it, as she is much, much stronger than you.

“Lahela?”

You announce yourself to her as she’s feasting on some fruit of the forest, and you find both of you being confused as hell.

“K-Koharu? You’re backss?” she swallows a piece after almost choking on it.

“Yeah… wait, you can.. you can eat that?” you ask, pointing at her food.

“Turnss out having human gutss allow me to eat more diversse stuff, whaddoyaknow!”

“That’s.. great!” you smile, feeling genuinely happy. You had been worried about how Lahela would survive in this place with her lingering hunger, but then again, she survived while being stuck in one place due to her old body.

“It’ss much better than hollow meat, at leasst.”

“I se- wait, hollows eat.. hollows?” you find yourself being surprised.

“Yup. That wass my only option back thenss.”

You continue exchanging news about your lives. Lahela tells you about her wanderings around the forest, and that she has even snuck out into the city a few times with a disguise. You on the other hand tell about your predicament with a noble family, the threats on your adoptive siblings.

“Aizen-ssama has vissited ass well. He evens helped me figure thiss out!” Lahela says with a confident smile as she shows you her ‘zanpakutō,’ the regular katana but with a white sheath of the same material as her bone fragment, and some actual little vines coiling around the hilt.

“What do you mean? As in, release it?” you ask.

“Yess! I can turns mysself back- er, partially, into my old form by abssorbing the ssword. Aizen-ssama callss it a resurrección.”

“Well, how about we test it out then?” you suggest.

“What?” she asks. “Like a fight?”

You nod. “I don’t know about you, but I could use the workout to get this stress out of my system. You probably want to find out what you can do yourself too, right?”

“I-I do! Okayss, you’re on! Don’t regretss it though!”

“What’s this, concern from a hollow?” you jest. “Come on, show me what you can do!”

You both draw your swords and take a ready stance. You wait for her to make a move, which she’s clearly hesitating to do. Maybe she’s not used to being the active assailant? You take the first step and charge at her.

From your first exchanges of swings, the difference in experience is clear. She has no training with a sword whatsoever, but you find that your sword doesn’t even make a scratch on Lahela.

“That’ss Hierro!” Lahela boasts. “My sskin hass become hard as ssteel!”

“Neat,” you nod, and give her a kick coupled with hakuda. This clearly deals more damage to her than any swing. “Looks like it’s not that good against blunt attacks though.”

“Pessky little fly…!” Lahela groans as she raises up from the ground. “I-I will gets you!”

The battle continues, but even if her strength is quite good, enough to make you think twice about directly blocking her attacks, your quickness keeps you away from harm’s way by a long shot. And this is even without shunpo, which you use just as Lahela is about to hit you.

“N-No fair!” she pouts as she realizes you’ve teleported in her eyes.

“Eh, I…” you scratch the back of your head as you realize just how wide the gap is right now between you and Lahela. “Okay. Let me help you out here, Lahela.”

You give Lahela a crash course on… well, a lot of things. The basics of reiatsu and coating one’s body and items with it to increase their destructiveness. One thing she clearly should learn though, is shunpo.

Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done.

“H-How?!” she keeps asking as much as you try to guide her. You feel a bit frustrated by now, with little progress she's getting with shunpo compared to hakuda and zanjutsu basics.

Then, you feel a nagging sensation at the back of your head, which you realize is Zilya. You haven’t yet found a way to communicate with those two outside of Jinzen or their respective Nikai’s, but it looks like she found one way.

By thrashing about in your inner world.

“Just one moment,” you tell Lahela as you sit down and close your eyes. The moment you get there, Zilya is in front of you, looking frustrated.

“How. Are. You. Not. Getting it?” Zilya groans.

You take an intuitive step back as she startles you. “W-What do you mean?!”

“Stop trying to teach the twat shinigami techniques. Make her learn the hollow equivalent.”

“What? That’s.. but I only know shunpo!”

“Sometimes, I admire your cleverness. At other times, I am baffled we share the same headspace. Why do you think you learned that ‘shunpo’ so fast, and why do you think it was so much louder than what any of those shinigami used?”

“That’s because you used MY technique," she whispers in your ear.

You gulp and blink as you realize that she’s right. Only through the academy and practice did you get your shunpo to be more silent.

“Tell you what. Use my release, and give me the reigns. I’ll show you just what hollows can learn.”

You nervously look towards Celaris, who’s standing rather far away. You can’t get a read on him at all.

“I…” you hesitate, as Zilya’s face ever comes closer to yours, her black and purple eyes piercing your very being.

“Yes?” she purrs.

“I guess there shouldn’t be any harm in that,” you say and look to the side. “But nothing radical! She is my friend, don’t be too harsh!”

Zilya bursts out into laughter. “You have no idea how hollows work, do you, little Koharu? Fine. But watch closely, and you might learn something.”

>...

You reopen your eyes and get up to face the confused Lahela.

“W-Whats.. did you do?” she asks.

“I don’t have the expertise to teach you properly,” you sigh, “but there is somebody who can. I’m sorry if… when things get harsh.”

“Mediate, Naimen no Daiza,” you calmly proclaim as your zanpakutō gently turns into the familiar chalice form. “Defile and Devour, Jorōgumo!”

With an explosive burst of reiatsu, your zanpakutō changes into the blackened spider half-fang half-leg shape, and your reiatsu becomes much more menacing along with the change in color.

“Zilya?” you whisper.

“Give it aaaall to me, sweetheart.”

You are Zilya Arachina, the Ruin of the world, and you’ve finally found your exit from the thousand-year-old prison.

And it feels bloody good to be out.

This body, it’s disgusting to not have your natural curves and allure, but it will have to do. You’re not here to seduce anybody afterall, you had your share of fun with the two boys already. Now it’s time to whip this pathetic hollow into shape.

“You,” you speak in a resonating voice, “Start running.”

“W-What?” Lahela exclaims, only to find your fist right in her gut, sending her flying deeper into the forest.

“Start. Running.”

Oh how sweet it feels to actually move, to feel the wind and a solid ground that resists your will, things that you can enjoy breaking apart and subjugating to your desires and whims.

“K-Koharu, whatss-” Lahela coughs, but finds your foot at her throat.

“You shall henceforth only call me Mistress. For every mistake, I shall cut off a finger from your hand.”

The pathetic hollow looks like she’s ready to wet herself, fear flooding her mind.

Good.

“I will repeat myself only once: Start. Running.”

And run she did.

To the whimpy hollow’s credit, she picks up on sonido very quickly after you show it to her a few times in extreme slow motion and kick her around. Now it’s time for some harder-to-dodge bullets.

“Cero.”

With an outstretched palm, you gather a lot of chaotic red energy and shoot the thing at Lahela, scorching her side that she failed to properly dodge.

“Tsch, that weak?” you shake your head. “Oh how I’ve fallen. Cero!”

“M-Misstresss, pleasse-” Lahela pleads as she’s breathing like crazy, on the verge of passing out, conscious only due to her primal survival instincts.

“You will either learn or you will die. It’s that simple.”

Your head starts to hurt quite bad as you say that. Damn that Koharu, interfering… you’re just threatening, of course you won’t kill her. That would be a waste of resources.

Now, what to do.... If you remember right, she should have that ‘resurrección’ of hers.

Clearly this ‘humanity’ is currently keeping her back. Humans are weak and pitiful, disgustingly so. It’s time this girl acknowledges that and actually starts to fight back.

“What are you waiting for?” you taunt her. “Are you that scared? Where is your anger? I’ve almost killed you, and I really will do it, unless you stop me.”

Despite Koharu’s attempts at interference, you persist and charge another cero at Lahela, this time, taking your time in order to make it actually create a worthy explosion.

Lahela, looking right into the eyes of death, finally releases her zanpakutō.

“Entangle, Sadkheu!” she screams, and her body bursts into bright green light, reiatsu washing over you. Her upper body morphs and remains human-like with the white bone of her maw now extending downwards over her rather nice chest, ending just before her navel. Her arms are covered in vines, but the greatest change is that underneath her waist.

Below it, she’s become a mass of large vines, slithering about like when Koharu first found her.

“I’LL KILL YOU!” she screams and pushes herself down, but not moving away from your aim. You shrug and fire your cero, only to find a root burst from the ground, and redirect your hand just enough to the side that the cero misses. Instead, it obliterates a part of the forest, and sets the area around it on fire.

“Cheeky brat,” you laugh as you finish admiring the destruction left behind by your this time better cero, despite it being extremely lackluster. You use sonido to get out of the way of another large vine erupting from right beneath you, with a flytrap maw eating up the air where you just were. At least now she’s finally serious about hurting you… no, killing you.

The battle finally rages on with both of you at each other’s throats. Lahela is much slower in this form, reminiscent of her original predicament as a hollow, but she’s able to use sonido to get out of harm’s way quite decently despite your own quick attacks with Jorōgumo. You simply smile, as you only need one hit, and then her reiatsu is all yours to defile and devour.

However, you feel great weakness all of a sudden, and your mind starts slipping away. “Shit, I used up too much reiryoku..”

Lahela, in her state of rage doubles down on her assault on you, however stops as both of you hear a new, quite menacing voice.

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TO MY FOREST?!”

Aaand that’s where we end this session. Lahela might be a bit conflicted about you now, but at least she’s become stronger. Next time you’ll have some explaining to do to the queen whose domain you’ve just partially incinerated.

Hope you enjoyed it, and until next time (still to be decided when).

There's a decent chance I won't be either. But my response to the Forest Queen's query would go something along the lines of
>I didn't do anything. You saw those Ceros getting blasted everywhere right? I was framed, you see.

I can skip on the name but the fact remains that we were framed and the real culprit skedaddled. I'm not taking responsibility for this. After all everyone know regular hollows and shinigami can't shoot ceros, it's the most obvious conclusion.

You are Nakashiri Koharu, and you wake up restrained with coiling branches of wood. Your head hurts and your stomach is growling from hunger, and only now do you start remembering just what had transpired. Zilya had taken over your body at your permission, and ended up draining your reiryoku, almost killed Lahela, and destroyed chunks of the forest.

And now, you see the wooden figure of the Wailing Forest’s queen is sitting in front of you. It doesn’t take a smart person to understand why she may be pissed.

“La.. Lahela?” you mumble, looking around for your arrancar friend, and see that she’s unconscious near the queen, but not restrained. Your eyes widen at a speck of fear that she might be dead - by your hand no less.

“She is alive,” the hollow queen speaks, “Barely. I did not take you for a ruthless maniac the first time we met.”

“I… I am not!” you protest.

“Evidence shows otherwise. Whatever made you think that MY forest is a playground for you anyways?” she speaks bitterly, and moves closer, grabbing your jaw. “And how the hell can you use advanced hollow techniques? You are clearly no hollow, much less a menos, despite how you felt earlier.”

You swallow hard, close your eyes and surrender to the accusations. Even if it wasn’t exactly you but Zilya, it still falls to you in responsibility for allowing her out here.

“I’m sorry, I really am,” you say as you reopen your eyes and look into the dark holes of the queen’s mask. “I screwed up. This all, it was not my intention, to hurt Lahela, or the forest.”

“That so?” she comments, as she takes a look at you. “Who would’ve thought, a shinigami asking for forgiveness for hurting hollows. Surely the worlds are about to end.”

The wooden restrains loosen and soften somewhat, giving you enough wiggle room to not struggle to speak.

“However, this still doesn’t answer my question.”

You lower your gaze. You’ve no idea what exactly Zilya had you use, it’s not something you learned from anyone. As much as you’d like to keep information about it to yourself, you have to give her something.

“I don’t know,” you sigh. “My zanpakutō is still a large mystery for me, along with its spirit. But I do know half of it is somehow related to hollows. And I lost control over myself to that half.”

“A rather ridiculous claim, but I’ll accept it for now,” she says as she raises your zanpakutō from the ground.

“M-My zanpakutō!” you exclaim.

“Perceptive, aren’t you?” she says. “It’s rather strange… it’s unlike the soul cutters I’ve seen so far. And yes, I do know that most of your kind uses half-baked ones.”

“How is it strange?” you demand.

“I do not sense a spirit inside it. I’m quite curious how this inanimate piece of metal supposedly both controlled you, and was the cause of your hollow-like abilities.”

“It acts as a mediator between myself and others,” you explain. Technically it’s true, just not in the way she will assume. “It takes the properties of those I face, but how exactly, and how it affects me… I’m still learning. I’m still a fresh soul reaper.”

The queen eyes the blade and then you, giving you a short glance at her green irises.

“So many questions, too few answers,” she sighs and then waves her hand, your wooden prison untangling itself and setting you free. As you struggle a bit on the ground, she brings you back your zanpakutō, she also hands you some fruit.

“They’re not my fruit,” she answers the unspoken question. “Eat up.”

“You’re helping me?” you ask, baffled.

“What I do, whom I kill and whom I spare, are all my decisions. You may be unpredictable, but I have confidence in my own powers,” she sits back down, and slowly ramps up her own reiatsu. A black, tentacle- or vine-like aura appears behind her and feels like it’s slowly creeping up to you, draining the life of the world as it becomes more and more unbearable.

Then, it ceases, leaving you gasping for air.

“Eat up,” she repeats herself, and looks at Lahela.

You swallow hard and dig into the sweet fruit. The Seireitei has some fruit sometimes, but the forest’s bounties are much sweeter and delicious than whatever the division cafeteria has to offer.

Your eyes go back to the queen, and then Lahela.

“How is she? Is she going to be alright?”

“You gave her quite a rough time. She almost burned out all her reiryoku. I assume you know what happens when there’s none left?”

You shake your head with some dread.

“Disintegration.”

You feel even worse now, knowing that not only could she have died by your powers, but also of starvation if the queen hadn’t intervened.

“I... “ you try to say something, but are at a loss of words. “Thank you, for saving her.”

“You’re welcome, shinigami.”

“My name is Koharu,” you shake your head. “I’d like to know yours.”

“And what makes you think I’d give you it?” she shifts her gaze to you.

“I don’t know, but… I feel like it’s only right. I’d rather use something else than hollow.”

She contemplates in silence, before answering.

“It’s Drianni.”

“It’s nice to talk to you, Drianni,” you give a genuine smile, which really flusters her, despite only showing it with just looking to the side.

“You are not a regular hollow,” you state, “and Aizen called you a vasto lorde. On top of that, it feels like the roots of this forest are all part of you. Just what.. exactly are you?”

“You are correct on all accounts, but I would not call myself a ‘waste lord’ nor associate myself with those dreaded sands,” Drianni speaks with a surprising amount of venom in her voice.

“Dreaded sands?” you blink.

“Yǐngjiè, or Hueco Mundo as the Defiler has called it,” she spits out. “You shinigami call it Kage no Sekai.”

“The realm of hollows? It’s.. all sand?”

“That is why I left that realm behind,” Drianni speaks and starts leaking reiatsu and bloodlust alike, feeling like the whole world is about to collapse, before she realizes it and suppresses it.

“I’m sorry. I do not want to spare a single thought to that place.”

Lahela bolts upright, looking like she had seen a ghost. Perhaps Drianni’s reiatsu spooked her awake. Nonetheless, you go to her and help her calm down, despite the horrified expression she gets upon seeing you again.

“It’s all fine, Lahela, it’s me! Everything’s okay!”

“K-Koharu? It’ss.. it’ss really you, right?” she asks, to which you nod, after which she tackles you with a hug. “Y-You are sscary! Sscary!!

You pat her head as you exhale in relief. “There, there.”

“Now that you are both awake, leave.”

“W-What?”

“I do not want to see either of you in my forest again.”

“Please, at least not Lahela! This is all on me!” you plead.

“Then you have to learn to accept that your mistakes may and will affect the innocent,” Drianni calmly states.

You grit your teeth. “If she leaves, the shinigami will hunt her down. And if Hueco Mundo really is as dreadful as you spoke, leaving would be a death sentence. Do you really want that?”

Drianni feels quite angry, meaning you definitely got through to her on some level.

“As for me, I’ll gladly accept the punishment. However, if you will have me, I can help regrow the forest. This place, I can feel how important it is to you.”

You stand firm and then bow to her. “Please, let me right my wrongs!”

Sweat drips down your chin as you can feel Drianni’s anger, but fortunately it subsides.

“You have ten days and ten nights,” she says and starts walking away. You don’t dare to ask about the scenario that you don’t manage to do it. At the very least, you’ve been given a chance. Given that you don’t want to disappoint Aizen-san, you will see this all through.

Lahela stands beside you, staring at you with tear droplets in the corners of her eyes.

“L-Lahela? Are you okay?” you ask as you realize this, but she again tackles you with a hug and starts bawling.

“WAAAH! Nobodys hass been thiss kind to me…! I’m.. I’m sso glad to know you!”

You feel embarrassed, but let her have it. At least she’s not mad about the training that Zilya hijacked. You brush her back with a smile.

As you make haste back towards the Seireitei with the sun close to disappearing over the horizon, you contemplate over how to report this all to Aizen. As much as you want to just tell him everything, trust him completely, he has taught you himself to analyze everything, every possible move and every scenario. He is incredibly perceptive himself, and somehow you believe that he’ll be able to read between the lines of your report anyway.

However, the question still remains: What exactly to tell him?

You’re at least 50% sure Aizen knew about the Shiraka goons and gave you this opportunity to deal with them. But since he didn’t talk to you about it during the briefing, maybe you shouldn’t report it either?

As for Lahela and the training incident, it could be a good way to open up the topic of Jorōgumo with him. He will eventually hear about it from Lahela you assume, so is there any reason to hide it anymore?

You’ll have to report the situation with Drianni, however. You will need to figure out how to heal the forest before you can go back, and you assume she won’t be happy to see Aizen there either until it is done.

There’s also a solid chance he’ll help you out of this mess too, given his expertise with botany.

Doing her second year right now, I'm going to roll dice to see if she needs more time, but since she's a noble, they can pull some strings. Same for Emika and Izumi. Generally graduating under 3 years is really exceptional, most shinigami doing from 5 to the full 7 years.

You sip on the green tea Aizen had prepared as you finish the report, keeping it quite short and to the point. Training with Lahela, things got out of hand, forest got burned, and Drianni was pissed.

Aizen listens and sips his own tea, before putting it down and giving you a smile.

“I’m happy you are safe and sound, Koharu.”

You once again feel a light blush wash over your face and are forced to look away. “I… messed up though. Drianni, she.. she’s important for something, isn’t she?”

“She is,” Aizen nods, “the situation can be easily recovered though, right?”

You nod. “I know it’s my problem, but... could you help me, Aizen-san? I’ve heard that all the division gardens, they were all placed and grown by you, and I’ve seen how well you tend to the orchard.”

“Have you now?” Aizen smirks. “If you really need my help, I’ll give it to you, but it is your own hands that will handle the forest, not mine.”

You bow deeply. “Naturally. I wouldn’t want it any other way, Aizen.”

You continue drinking your green tea, and mull over some questions in your head. There’s so much you’d like to ask him, but at the same time, deep inside, you know that if you were to do so, there would be no turning back to the safety of ignorance.

But do you really want such safety?

“Aizen?” you raise your eyes once more to meet your mentor’s. “May… I ask something?”

“Would I stop you?”

“I.. I suppose not,” you scratch the back of your head. “Aizen… just… what is it that you are aiming to achieve?”

You can feel your heart beating. Aizen’s gaze, it’s much more different now. The shadows on his face slightly deepen, and his expression turns more serious, with the steam from the tea dancing in front of him.

“Now, whatever you could mean by that, Koharu?”

You swallow hard. “All of this, it’s… I don’t believe you have the same intentions as the rest of the Gotei 13. Keeping me safe from surveillance, hollow research that would condemn you, helping me undermine the nobility… I feel like- no, I know you have your own goal, your own plan. Why else risk everything?”

Aizen closes his eyes. “You truly are perceptive, Koharu. Before I tell you, let me ask you something in return: If your life, your fate, were in the hands of another, would you be able to exist comfortably?”

“I-I… no, I wouldn’t,” you answer. Remembering your experience with the Central 46 and how it left you frustrated showed you what that feels like to be at the mercy of others. That’s even disregarding your life at the Kasuga-taisha, where you were forced into seclusion due to your fragile body.

“Here’s another question then. By what authority does the Central 46 exercise their will?”

“By the Soul King’s Mandate,” you recite the knowledge imparted on you at the Shin’ō Academy.

Aizen sips some more of his tea. “And who has benefited from all their laws and rulings?”

“The nobles of Soul Society… who form the Central 46,” you finally put to words what you’ve been struggling to accept.

“And what have you been taught about the Soul King?”

“He is the linchpin of existence, whose sole purpose is to regulate the flow of souls into and out of Soul Society and keep the flow stable,” you recite.

“Now why would such a great being keep in power the nobles, a population of souls that move on from the afterlife very slowly, some never?”

“There’s… no reason. The cycle of birth and rebirth must be upheld to keep the world in balance,” you realize. “That means.. they couldn’t be operating under such a being’s mandate.”

“To understand the C46, you only need to look into human history. Any dynasty that has used divine justification for their rulership, were the ones who gave that justification to themselves in the first place.”

“You’re.. saying the nobles are above the Soul King? Or is he only symbolic afterall?”

“The Soul King is very much real, Koharu, but the truth is much uglier than that. Perhaps a story for another time. Now, knowing all this, what would you say my goal is?”

You feel your hands shake. All your life you’ve wanted to go your own way, unrestricted, even the power to subjugate those who push you down and deny you that. And you can feel all of that resonating with what Aizen has told you.

The answer is clear.

“Freedom. To break the chains others have put upon you.”

Aizen nods with a smile. “And what do you want to achieve, Koharu?”

You swallow hard.

“The same.”

How unreasonable!
>>4611865
I would want to ask what his opinion on the Soul King's relationship with the nobility is. And what he's even trying to accomplish. Revenge? Exoneration by SS?
I also am not inclined to rat out our hollow frens.

Koharu should do some soul-searching on what exactly he wants from (after)life. I'd prefer to be neither Urahara's nor Aizen's pawn if it can be avoided (big "if" kek). I thought the main reason we agreed to become a shinigami was because they're the only guys (that we knew about) who have access to the living world so Koharu could see his galpals again.

On that topic, I wonder if Zilya could teach us to travel through the Garganta (although there's probably a baseline reiatsu threshold for maintaining a stable path that Koharu's not at yet).

We should also prepare a gift-basket for Drianni as thanks for letting us make amends (and give Lahela something nice too). Maybe the queen would like books and jewelery?
>>
>>4615411
To me the one of our follow up questions could've been how exactly the hollow research fits into his plan to liberate people of the C46? I doubt he'll give us the full story on that though, even if we're helpful he's got to know better than to toss out his full hand.

Getting gifts for Drianna might help patch things up there for us. I personally find it humorous that we're more than willing to befriend some hollows that we meet and get to know a little but a bratty noble girl gets under our skin all the time.
>>
>>4615525
We can relate to hollows and their desire for freedom and such, not so much with the rich (unless Yukiko has some depth that we haven’t seen since we automatically go into “fuck off” mode around her)
>>
>>4615525
We'll have to see how much Aizen's willing to give away, yes. I don't think if he'd go for letting on that he's building a hollow army so quickly but he may surprise us.
>we're more than willing to befriend some hollows that we meet and get to know a little but a bratty noble girl gets under our skin all the time
That's because the reasonable hollows are unironically easier to get along with than most of the fags who run Soul Society. Although in Drianni's case a big reason she didn't turn us into fertilizer in the first encounter was because Aizen stared her down. I guess our collective weirdness made her inclined to keep us around out of curiosity.
>>
>>4615561
I may be in the minority but when Yukiko graduates I will always support the idea of having a talk with her if we ever cross paths. No entourage around to influence her, just two shinigami that have to come to a mutual understanding.

OMAKE: The Camp Incident

“E-Emika, Izumi,” you swallow hard, “go find somebody strong.”

“K-Koharu?” Emika tries to ask you something, but by that point you’re already off with a shunpo. She and Izumi watch as you dance around the hulking mosquito-like hollow with shunpo, but their expressions turn to horror as the hollow hits you and sends you flying into the forest, quickly following after you.

“KOHARU!”
“KOHARU!”

Both Emika and Izumi scream, ready to run after you. However, their paths are blocked by a number of other hollows, each of which is more than happy to shred them to tears and devour their sweet flesh.

“E-Emi-chan..!” Izumi stutters in fear.

“K-Keep behind me, Izumi-chan! W-We must hold out! Hadō #4: Byakurai!”

Pale blue lightning shoots out of her palm as she injures a hollow that leaped towards them, deflecting just enough to avoid the attack. Four hollows in total encircle the terrified duo as they realize they may not survive this.

“Fugeki!”

A crescent moon shaped energy sweeps past the pair and cuts one hollow down, followed by a strong gust of wind all around it, partially disorienting the girls. As they open their eyes to look at what happened, they find Heizo standing in front of them, his Hsu Quandao zanpakutō in one arm.

“Are you hurt?”

>1/3
>>
“Heizo-kun!” Emika exclaims with tears of joy, “Oh thank Reiō!”

Izumi looks like she’s about to collapse from all of this, but Emika keeps holding her hand both to reassure her, but also herself. Together, the three manage to kill and scare off the remaining hollows: Heizo at the forefront as the brawn, Emika with her kidō, and Izumi offering light healing and reiryoku transfer where she can.

However, the large crack in the sky suddenly rips vertically apart as a large white mask with a long nose forces itself through with its enormous body. The trio, even Heizo, are clearly intimidated by the fabled Menos Grande. Never did they dream of coming face to face with such a monstrous hollow, much less during their academy years.

“N-No..!” Emika whispers.

“M-M-M-Menos…!” Izumi’s eyes widen and jaw trembles.

“G-Grande..” Heizo grits his teeth.

The reiatsu alone is almost enough to bend them to their knees.

“S-Shit… is this how it ends?”

As they fall into despair, none other than Konuma-sensei arrives at the scene, floating in the air with the help of reishi pads, with his own zanpakutō drawn. Proper shinigami arrive around the trio, urging them to follow them.

“Please, this way, to the senkaimon!”

“W-Wait! Koharu is still out there!” Emika shouts as tears flow out of her eyes.

“We’ll rescue others after we get you to safety,” the shinigami responds.

“N-No, you don’t understand!”

“Where is she?” they hear a familiar voice from behind them, as Asato-senpai steps forth, his blade bathed in hollow blood. “Quickly now.”

With Asato swiftly departing to the rescue, the last thing the girls see before entering the Senkaimon is Konuma-sensei dealing a strike to the menos. It is followed by a huge, ear-splitting blast, that cracks its mask, and forces it back into the darkness from whence it came.

“Begone, foul creature!”

“Ko~ ha~ ru~!”

Yukiko holds her hands to her ears as the massive, mosquito-like hollow screams near her. Despite its proximity, the hollow has no interest in her, instead shouting the name of her rival. The immense reiatsu makes it hard for her to breathe, but thankfully the hollow disappears in a flash, almost like it’s using shunpo.

As Yukiko gets her bearings, her mind is all over the place, trying to understand the situation. Why are the hollows attacking? Who is this monstrous hollow, and why is it calling for that damned rukongai brat? Why is nobody coming to rescue her?

Although the insanely deadly hollow went away without even as much as glancing at her, another hollow sees her as its perfect prey. With a leap, the hollow attacks Yukiko who just barely throws herself to the side, away from its path. Despite her whole body shaking from the previous experience, she rises up and aims her zanpakutō at the average hollow.

“J-Just like in practice..!”

The moment she manages to calm down, Yukiko regains enough confidence to dodge the hollow’s attacks with her shunpo and cut the hollow’s flesh at various places. The natural regeneration of hollows kicks in instantly though, and in mere seconds it’s like she hadn’t hurt the beast at all. Panicking, Yukiko flees.

“T-There has to be help at the camp!” she assures herself. “Surely reinforcements will come to get me to safety!”

Her hopes shatter as she gets into the vicinity of the camp, and sees the fire and destruction that has befallen it, along with some corpses of students. In shock, she notices too late as the hollow from before tackles her from behind, bruising her back and leaving her squirming on the wet, mushy ground.

“D-Damn it all… D-Damn it!” Yukiko screams. However, instead of more pain and anguish, she hears a clean slash. As she struggles to turn around, she sees a young, blonde-haired man, with a zanpakutō that turns twice at right angles, like a hook, and the hollow’s body in two clean slices, slowly disintegrating.

“Do not be afraid. I’m here to take you to safety.”

Yukiko sheds some tears, both of pain and joy, as the shinigami picks her up to carry towards the summoned senkaimon.

“A-About time..” she whispers as her mind just barely stays conscious. Why did all of this happen? She didn’t deserve any of this, all was supposed to go well for her, so she could become the shinigami her parents expect her to become.

With her eyes closing, she knows one thing for sure.

Somehow, this must be your fault.

It must be.

You are Nakashiri Koharu, and your night is filled with many thoughts and big questions, even questioning your very purpose.

Stirring in your bedroll among many other shinigami, you wonder about your friends in the real world. It’s been over a year now since you’ve had any contact at all with them. Aizen mentioned he could try to negotiate with the 13th to get you stationed somewhere in that area that happens to be under Hisashi’s division’s jurisdiction, but being still quite a fresh soul reaper, you’ve only been stationed in the Seireitei.

Going to Soul Society was a decision you made because of the circumstances with your true body. There’s no doubt in your mind now though that Urahara most certainly took advantage of that fact in order to get somebody to Soul Society aligned with him, but this journey did give you the chance to develop your powers, among granting you your zanpakutō. Perhaps it’ll also be the fastest way to get back to the living realm as well.

But at this point, would you even be able to live out a normal life, as you’re in the dead middle of all this soul business?

Captain Aizen has taken care of you in many ways since he stumbled upon you awakening your zanpakutō, and remains the closest person you have in this world. Of course you have Emika and Izumi, Hisashi and Asato, even Heizo, but despite those friendships, you have to hide a lot from them. Things about you, and your secret mission.

“My life has always been, and still is, in this world. Why should I care about the shinigami, the Gotei 13?” you recall asking Urahara, to which he replied:

“You shouldn’t. There may come a time during this when you’ll have to work against the Gotei 13, betray, even kill, for the sake of the eventual greater good of the world.”

Only now do you realize what he meant, but something tells you that this shouldn’t have been so easy. Instead of being indifferent, you’re more disgusted by everything. Experiencing how life is in the Rukongai and observing nobles at the academy for almost a year was enough to kill any love for the current system. Were it not for your adopted siblings, friends, and ultimately Aizen, you might have strayed from this all.

“The person behind the conspiracy will no doubt find you and try to recruit you. I want you to let him do that,” Urahara told you that time. “The traitor is very interested in hollow powers, especially if it’s possible to attain them without becoming a hollow. Now, if my own theories about your powers are correct, he will no doubt become interested in you.”

The picture becomes clear, yet your heart still races. You open your eyes, faintly whispering:

“It’s you, isn’t it? Aizen..?”

Preparations for the forest restoration go quite well as Aizen helps you get the right ingredients. He doesn’t give you any proper instructions, but he does suggest using your own reiryoku to your advantage, as well as Lahela, given that she’s a plant-type hollow.

Thinking about this all, you entertain the idea of finding Drianni a gift on top of this all. You don’t know if she’ll even approve of such a thing, but it could be worth a shot. You make sure the bag with all the ingredients is secured, and throw it over your shoulder against your back.

After reporting to Aizen that you’re leaving, you set out towards the now quite familiar Wailing Forest. You sigh with a light laugh, as the irony of preferring hollow company to shinigami is not lost upon you.

As you get to the forest, especially the part which you destroyed, your knees go weak. So much simply eradicated, burned and charred surfaces, and a lot of ash.

“I.. I did this?” you wonder, extending your palm in front of you and looking at it.

“Koharu!” you hear Lahela call out to you as she flash steps… no, some other similar technique, to your location.

“Wow, you’ve improved! I didn’t know you could do that!”

“Y-YOU ALMOST KILLEDSS ME TO LEARNSS THAT!” she shouts in your face, but then turns away, crossing her arms. “B-But.. I guesss I should thank youss for that..”

You shake your head as the ringing in your ears subsides. “What I did was risky and irresponsible. I should be asking for your forgiveness.”

After some more exchange in words, you get to work, or rather, planning your work. The ingredients you collected with Aizen from his gardens are nutritious to the ground, so it will work as fertilizer on top of the ashes, but you need to find and plant seeds of the flora of this forest.

Aizen mentioned channeling reiryoku somehow, but you’re at a loss on how to go about it. Looking at Naimen no Daiza, you play with the thought of ‘mediating’ the plant life itself.

Then, you also have Lahela with you who has her plant-like powers which could help. Maybe she can do something similar to what Drianni has done with the whole forest, with her roots and berries?

Still, you need to decide how to proceed during the nine days you still have to fix this mess.

You meant senses right? Not a bad idea.
Also I was thinking we could ask Lahela to transform and use her vines to stir up the soil in case we find anything or want to remove dead roots/stumps.
>>
>>4617493
Here’s a outline from me (using a couple ideas from anons too):
1) Use Senzen to see if there’s anything salvageable nearby and make a note of it
2) Ask Lahela to transform and use her vines to help us remove the dead stumps quickly as well as stir up the soil some. Also ask if she has any other ideas she wouldn’t mind trying.
3) If any of the plants looked salvageable try using healing and Naimen no daiza as an experiment

“I’ll check the area, see how bad the damage really is, and see if I can find anything that needs to be removed or can be salvaged,” you explain to Lahela. “After that, I’d like you to release your zanpakutō and stir up the soil with your vines, alright?”

“Ssure!” Lahela nods with a confident smile. “I can do that!”

“We can add the fertilizer at that point too,” you say. Looking at your sheathed zanpakutō, you continue your train of thought. “Then I’ll try using Naimen no Daiza to work on any living plants and seeds, see if I can boost their growth. I’d like to figure out if I can do that before making further plans on that, but in any case it’ll be time to plant new life.”

With the plan somewhat set, you activate Senzen. Your five senses disappear momentarily, before receiving secondary signals through your reikaku. The area, while it looks dead on the surface, does still retain a lot of intact roots, connected to the ‘highway’-like roots that belong to Drianni. Only now do you realize just how much she sustains the forest, and possibly the reason why the forest hasn’t been cut down by the folk in the Rukongai or the shinigami.

But, the fact that there are remaining roots could work as a good growthbed for new life, connected to Drianni’s living network right away.

Something however catches your eye, and you examine the soil a little more. The earth, it not only feels hollow due to Drianni’s roots, but there’s something else. Digging deeper and around, you find pieces of… bones.

Wait a moment…

“These… are hollow mask fragments,” you realize, as you find more and more bits everywhere. “Drianni… has she been using hollows as fertilizer?”

You gulp at the implication that she must’ve ground and ‘digested’ hundreds, if not thousands of hollows into the soil for there to be this many fragments everywhere.

Next, Lahela releases her zanpakutō to go into her ‘resurrected’ form.

“Entangle, Sadkheu!” she exclaims as she draws her sword, which quickly starts to glow green and encompases her whole body. The transformation takes some seconds, you note, enough for somebody quick to do something potentially.

Lahela emerges in her half humanoid and half vine-monster form, with the lower part of her body being like a flower or maw, continuing into the dozens of vines you remember from your initial meeting with her.

“I’ll be ahead of you to spread this stuff,” you nod and open the bag.

This process ends up being somewhat slow and boring given the large area to cover, but you’re happy Lahela is here to help. Without her, it’d probably take you ten times longer. As you go about your business, you keep chatting up Lahela.

“Soo, uhm, how is Drianni?” you ask.

“Sshe madess it clear sshe doessn’t want to talk…. sso I avoid her too.”

You sigh. “Hopefully we can get this done and we’ll be able to get back to being friendly, or at least neutral.”

As you talk, none other than Lizzy comes out of your clothing along your neck.

“Uh, Liz, not now..!” you protest as it’s climbing along your head now.

“T-THAT’SS!” Lahela exclaims as soon as she notices the lizard hollow. You put the bag down for a moment and pick Lizzy off your face, and bring it closer to Lahela, practically standing on one of her flower ‘leaves.’

“It’s… a long story. I found Lizzy here, actually. Ever since then it stuck to me, one way or another.”

“S-so cute!” she practically squeals.

You do wonder for a moment about the little guy. Why is it so attached to you, and why doesn’t it seem to be hungry, ever?

Finally, as the ground is treated, you release Naimen no Daiza to see if you can’t ‘mediate’ the seeds and remaining roots, through channeling your own reiryoku. New seeds planted in the ground respond well, but after pushing too much, it seems to have forced the plant to grow too quickly, starving the ground of reiryoku. You frown, as this means that it’ll die if left on it’s own. However, you do get an idea: What if you plant them into the remaining roots?

Perhaps Drianni’s own vast reiryoku reserves could work as the source?

Would she be okay with that?

You bite a bit of the nail on your thumb as you consider it. You can’t exactly ask her that yourself, since she doesn’t want to see you. Doing this could hasten the restoration efforts by a considerable amount, but it would be at the cost of her own energy.

Your eyes widen however as you realize the most notable thing.

Those roots… if they have Drianni’s reiryoku, they should exert her reiatsu as well. Would that mean that you could ‘mediate’ her through them as well?

A lot to consider here.

>Plant the seeds as they are, let them grow on their own.

That may not have been a bad idea, honestly. We can control living things with Hanran, and that should extend to plants. We could try to literally tell them to grow.

Alternately, we could have had Lahela try do something to grow plants while we tried using Hanran to give her more power. No idea if it would have worked, but we’ve never tried using Hanran as anything but a debuff so far.

Zilya's power and by extension Jorogumo works on minds, consciousness, which plants do not have, so I'm afraid it won't work. And even then, it's only about telling what to do, not boosting or diminishing power in itself.

However, >>4617651 this might. But it's going to be kind of redundant since you decided to make use of Drianni's roots anyway.

Since Drianni clearly cares for this forest and personally nurtures it, you decide that sapping a little of her vast reiryoku reserves shouldn’t be too bad, if it’s to restore the forest. As such you instruct Lahela to gather and find seeds of the trees around the area. Tree cones, fruits, berries, anything that can grow into its own plant.

You could mediate each plant individually, making sure that way that nothing goes wrong, but that would take hours, and hours, and hours… possibly almost full days if you aim to get this all done within the timeframe that Drianni gave you. Being away from your shinigami duties for almost ten days is going to look quite suspicious, since you still don’t know how exactly Aizen keeps your surveillance away for these trips.

In short, that’s no good.

Mediating the whole area is going to be hard and exhausting, but it’s the only viable choice. After you and Lahela finish generally planting enough stuff all around the charred area, you dig a hole to get to the base of Drianni’s roots. Of course, you won’t be able to do this in just one day, but at least it’ll save you from large amounts of labor.

“Well, here it goes,” you proclaim, and release Naimen no Daiza. You prepare your mind with the ideas and focus of what you want to achieve, as there’s always a possibility of something going wrong due to hesitation, or worse, unclear intentions. That’s what happened with Sanjuro, and you do not wish that fate upon anyone, let alone Drianni.

Gently stabbing the tip just enough into the root, your blade is instantly covered with Drianni’s reiatsu, but you push back and fight the instinct to get your own mind drawn in there. Once you get some clarity as to what your sphere of influence is right now, you put in motion the same idea and feeling that you had when you did the initial experiment with a plant seed.

“W-W-W-WHAT’SS THISS?” you hear Lahela shout out, but you keep your eyes closed and disregard any and all sounds so you don’t make a mistake. You stay like this for some ten minutes before you pull Naimen no Daiza out, and fall down on your butt, trying to catch your breath.

Vines creep up around you, much like when Lahela was going to entangle and eat you, but this time she gently picks you up from the hole. What you see is truly magnificent.

Around a few hundred meters by diameter, the seeds you planted have grown quite much: Trees, while still quite thin, have grown up to six meters, and many bushes have sprouted a nice foliage. The ground had reacted to your tampering as well, sprouting beds of flowers, most vibrant and colorful.

“It’s beautiful..”

After spending some time recovering with Lahela and Lizzy in the forest, you make your way back to the Seireitei. By your estimates, you should be able to restore the forest to some extent with similar ‘mediation’ on the remaining days. You hope it’ll be enough for Drianni, but you’re at least happy yourself that you managed to figure out a way to use your and Lahela’s powers, as well as Drianni’s own work to fix your mess.

On your way back, your thoughts drift back to the Shiraka. So far they’ve remained silent, and with their leverage gone, you could safely ignore them, wait for any further developments. On the other hand, you could follow Aizen’s suggestion and feign ignorance, thinking that their threat is still real, and become their retainer in order to get closer to the noble family.

Maybe even using Naimen no Daiza on them. You’ve already broken the laws just by dealing with hollows by means other than murder, it’s not a huge step beyond that to punish those who dared to threaten you. Especially using children.

You shake your head though. Would that really be fine? You feel like it’s another line that by crossing it, you leave behind something possibly important. Gaining some control however is extremely tempting.

Asato-senpai did promise to repay for healing his comrade, Aiko-san. You could instead focus on getting some proper practice with him on Jorōgumo, since he too, has hollow influences.

Maybe not today, today’s work got you exhausted enough, but you should be more okay tomorrow.

The next day, after pushing through your officer duties and making the trip to the Wailing Forest, you come back to finally deal with the Shiraka case. It’s an unpleasant business, but it’s something you have to do, like cutting off a leech.

Approaching their manor is bothersome on its own, as you don’t get past the front gates. The guards are adamant about security and keep you waiting for maybe an hour before one of them comes back with permission. You highly doubt that the nobles have anything remotely important on their schedules, so this must be just a way to flex on you, on top of irritating you.

“Thanks,” you grumble as you go past the gate and into the Shiraka courtyard. You can’t help but feel anger, and a lot of it at the sight: a large amount of land, field, with flowers, great architecture, solid buildings with proper roofs. When you passed the single digit districts in the Rukongai you already felt frustrated at the difference in quality, but this? This is just absurdity. In your mind, no way does the blackmailing trash that lives here deserve it.

There’s another pair of guards at the front door of the mansion itself who halt you. You have to do a lot of work to swallow all the fury inside of you for now. Fortunately, it doesn’t take as long for them to let you in, with one of the guards escorting you.

There’s a large genkan, the foyer area to leave shoes at, along with ornaments and paintings all over the walls to flaunt their wealth. Sighing, you pass on with the guard until you reach an empty room.

“This.. is an empty room?” you ask.

“The Mistress will be here once she has concluded her business,” the guard simply states, and points you to sit on the tatami. With a sigh you comply, doing your best to just pass the time. No doubt all of this is an attempt to make you nervous, frustrated, or both. No way you’ll give them that satisfaction.

“My sincerest thanks for waiting,” you hear a feminine voice speak from in front of you, as the doors slide apart, revealing a woman, looking quite similar to Yukiko, but much more mature and calm. Along with her, there’s a boy, younger than Yukiko for sure by appearance. Both of them have the same white hair as Yukiko.

One of their servants brings them pillows to sit on, along with green tea. Luxuries that they do not offer you.

“Now, whatever business do you have with us, Nakashiri-san?” the woman smiles politely. The boy looks rather disinterested in contrast.

You’re quite sure that this is Shiraka Yukira, the eighth head of the house. You read about her beforehand to not go in blind. She holds a seat in the Central 46 as the house’s representative, and you have no doubt that she was one of those actively pushing for your punishments during your trial. Either herself, or through somebody else.

“I received your.. letter,” you start explaining while retaining direct eye contact with Yukira. You tone your voice to be just calm enough, but let a little bit of nervousness creep in. Your aim is to convince her that you still feel threatened.

“And?” Yukira continues her own fake smile.

“...The message was loud and clear, Shiraka-shi,” you say as you just ever so slightly clench your hands. Yukira clearly sees and notes all of it, showing you that she does indeed have a good social eye. You just hope your emotional control is good enough to fool her.

“Is that so?” she closes her eyes with a larger smile, and sips on her tea. She reopens them once more, and observes you for a moment in silence, while the boy found something to poke in the pillow.

“We’ve heard you’re quite the prodigy,” she compliments you. “Not only did you join the academy mid-semester, but graduated in the first year on top of it all. Truly remarkable. Not even my dear daughter could achieve that.”

As much as she tries to hide it with her smile and fake compliments, you do notice the clear venom and disappointment for who you deduce is Yukiko. Just… what is their relationship?

You bow your head just slightly enough and thank her for her ‘kind’ words. “I owe my success to my instructors.”

“Our household is quite interested in sponsoring talent,” she says as her just faintly faltered smile returns to normal. “It’d be a shame if talented shinigami would remain unnoticed and uncared for in the masses, eventually dying to some hollow.”

You narrow your eyes. Of course you see that it’s another threat, but what bothers you more is that there’s a high probability that they.. she has done this before, that she has had a hand in the fate of many other shinigami.

Sickening to think that your fate could have been decided like this without your knowledge.

“And what do these sponsorships entail?” you ask.

“For one, becoming one of our retainers,” Yukira states as she finishes her tea.

And there you finally have the demand.

“It must be quite an honor, to be a retainer for such a prestigious family,” you deflect for now. If you’re going to be made into a servant, you’ll milk whatever info you can out of her.

“It is,” Yukira answers simply, narrowing her eyes ever so slightly to discern your intentions.

“They must be quite talented shinigami as well, and with lots of responsibilities?” you ask.

“Some are, some are less,” she answers as she puts aside her cup. “Seated officers in many divisions.”

“The Captains and Lieutenants must be pleased to have you aid in their officers’ developments.”

Yukira’s eye twitches very faintly, just once, enough to tell you everything you need to know. She’s just what Aizen described before, a noble that wants to have key position shinigami under her thumb. Seeing as you hit a nerve with your words, it’s clear she wants Lieutenant- and Captain-rank shinigami in her control.

This even allows you to start understanding Yukiko and why she behaves like she does: since she has spiritual potential, her mother, Yukira, has most likely put an enormous burden on her shoulders, to become a Captain of a division one day.

All so she can grab more power and influence.

“Sometimes, not enough,” Yukira smirks lightly. “Something that may change one day with a certain shinigami in charge.”

So she’s predicting you to become a Captain one day? That’s quite the flattery, despite the fact that it’s all about her controlling parts of the Gotei 13 through you.

>”If that certain someone’s family remains safe, I’m sure it will come to pass.” (Accept)

The other seated officers she has can worry about becoming captain or whatever, I just want them to move away from harming those around us.

As much as I'd love to reject her after she revealed her plans to see her reaction,
>”If that certain someone’s family remains safe, I’m sure it will come to pass.” (Accept)
is the safer choice, especially if we want to destroy them from the inside

”If that certain someone’s family remains safe, I’m sure it will come to pass,” you slightly furrow your brows, feigning both a little fear and a little anger.

“As long as that certain someone does what is asked of her,” Yukira smiles.

You close your eyes, swallowing down your pride. If this will keep them from hurting your friends, at least until you figure out a better solution, it’s for the best.

Yukira explains to you that as a retainer, you’ll be expected to report every morning to the family at the mansion, but otherwise, you’re to continue your duties as it were, until she gives you new orders. You dislike the idea that they could give you weird orders at any time, but for now, it’s for the best.

There’s, however, the embarrassing part of having to wear a white armband with the family sigil on it. If any of your friends were to see you with this, or even find out that you’ve become a retainer for a major family, they’ll probably lose some respect, especially Heizo.

You’re not sure if you should explain to them why you did this, but it’s a question for another time.

“Just you wait, Shiraka,” you clench your fist as you stand on top of a building just outside the manor. “I’ll get back at you, one way or another.”

And we’ll stop here for this session. I’m feeling the fatigue from lack of sleep, so I think it’s best to rest now. Hope you enjoyed it and thanks as always for participating and reading. I’ll work on the pastes asap too.

There’s a few more things still before the eventual timeskip, but if you guys have some of your own ideas on what you’d like to do or visit, do tell me and I’ll be able to prepare for them too.

I’ll be around for a while still for any questions!
>>
>>4619645
Thanks as always for the session Trippy, it was fun. Interesting to see that we have to wear an armband as a retainer, but I'm sure we can just pull it off when we want and only put it on to report to them. You think we'll get to meet any other retainers? Or are they not that important?
>>
>>4619650
>Removing the armband
You can try that, but keep in mind you still have somebody following your movements whenever Aizen isn't actively locking them up in his ceiling.

>You think we'll get to meet any other retainers? Or are they not that important?
I haven't planned any just yet, but one might come up sooner or later. It depends if I can give the character enough substance to work with, since I'm sort of afraid of character bloat that led to some of Kubo's problems.

But if you guys do have any fun ideas for a seated officer retainer, I'm all ears!
>>
>>4619655
Oh character bloat makes sense, I get ya. I'm sure other anons have better ideas but all I'd really prefer is someone that's in our squad as well, a senpai we can connect with thanks to the crooked system. I know we had friends back in the academy but I wouldn't be surprised if Aizen's who we spend the most time with now. Makes us look like a Captain's pet.

Side note: I like that we're the unofficial mascot of our squad.
>>

If you want a canon character how about Marechiyo Ōmaeda? He is arrogant enough to try and get the influence joining a Noble Family would bring but loyal enough to his captain to turn on them if she told him too or ordered to harm her in any way

>>4619645
Thanks for running Trippy goodnight

I wonder why that is...

>>4619679
>Marechiyo Ōmaeda?
As far as I know the Omaeda's belong to the Shihoin, and both Marechiyo and Sui-Feng are retainers for the Shihoin, according to the wiki. But I like the idea of using a canon character for this, just gotta find the best pick.
>>
>>4619617
We at least have something in common now: a lack of control in our lives. We can appeal to that
>>
Wowee. I'm seeing a trend and not sure I like it
Almost every single person we meet in Not!Heaven is a dickhead in a high position of power vying for an even higher position
If this keeps up all Koharu will need is a single individual or group intent on burning the whole thing down to jump ship and get on board the cleanse-train
Luckily there aren't many of those lying around. R-Right?
>>
>>4621090
Well, nothing says “deep cover” like overthrowing a celestial government so you can integrate yourself into the inner workings of your target’s operation.
>>
>>4621625
Nothing says "-DEEP- cover" like sleeping with the guy who you're helping overthrow a celes- wait no wrong plan.
>>
>>4621822
That's deep-throat anon
Different thing

So after lookin at the Pastebin and re-reading some parts of the Quest,

>Asato Junichi lost his Sword Oiran decades ago to a Hollow, he got it back but now has hollow powers
>His Squadmate Aiko got her sister eaten at the same time, by the same Hollow, and went mental
>Said Hollow is a damn Apex Axolotl

So how deep in German Hollow Quest-Verse are we? Or did you just borrow some characters?

>German Hollow Quest-Verse?
Since it's pretty obvious now, I can reveal that GHQ is one of the additional source materials I'm using for this quest (Spooks gave the green light).

>So how deep in are we?
Gonna spoiler this answer, read at your own discretion.
Up until big K leaves for Hueco Mundo with best chef is unaltered or has very minor changes. After that some things have remained, others changed due to how Hueco Mundo is in this quest.

I'm finally done with the most tedious part of searching for a summer job, that I can consider running a session. It'll be next week most likely, perhaps Wednesday and Thursday, but I'll confirm that first. I'll make a new thread too.

I still haven't touched the pastes, but I'll do that somewhere along the next few days.

Meanwhile, have a cute Koharu I found.

Character sheets and social links are updated! I've added Lahela to your allies, since it's clear she'll stick by your side.

Wednesday is locked, however Thursday may be out, but I'll start the session tomorrow (Tuesday) instead to make up for it. So see you tomorrow at 16:00 UTC!

>>4627382
>How can Koharu so seductive, what is his secret?
Maybe he's born with it, maybe it's maybeline?
Having a trap spirit and a literal seductress inside his head helps too

Not to be a stickler, but weren't you going to move Koharu's Social score up to 6 from 5?
Looking forward to tomorrow!
