/qst/ - Quests

Welcome back, honorable bushi of the Crab Clan, to the third installment of L5R Chanbara Quest. I'm your host, Wong, and you are Arinaga Daisuke, a vassal of the Hiruma family of the Crab Clan, student of the Hiruma Bushi School, possessor of a very fine katana, devout hater of goblins, bully of Scorpion girls, and murderer of bandits.

Last time, you made your way into Koumugi Village, killed the only two bandits unlucky enough to exist in your presence there after a long discussion on the importance of proper noodles, and made your way to the castle. There, you discovered that your aunt's bodyguard is an insufferable Phoenix (possibly ex-Phoenix) duelist by the name of Nishiyama Takeshi. A duelist dishonored for conduct unbecoming a gentleman. Unfortunately, he is running the castle like his own personal fief and keeping your bedridden uncle in the dark about more or less everything. When you informed your uncle of the truth, the horrible old man flew into a rage, took up his sword, and went out to slay the bandits and possibly Takeshi as well...only to suffer a heart attack and fall down the stairs, breaking his neck.

Leaving you standing over his lifeless body. The truth will set you free, right?
>>
>>4622752
>bully of Scorpion girls
I dunno my man it seems kinda the other way around.
>>
>>4622779

Your hypothesis has merit but I would hear it further elaborated on.
>>
>>4622752
We're innocent, I tell you. INNOCENT!

>>4622779

It's a fine, ever-shifting line.
>>
>>4622784
I mean she has gotten just about everything she wants from the verbal sparring so far. Even when it didn't go to her plan.

Can't really be bullying when you're losing ground every time you open your mouth.

>>4622790
I'ma be real wit chu chief the only way we could possibly bully her is physically.

>>4622792
Too bad Daisuke isn't renowned for his tightrope act.

>Too bad Daisuke isn't renowned for his tightrope act.

Dang, we'll have to work on that before we run into an opponent who's good at tripping in battle.
>>
>>4622808
>the incredible balancing crab: coming to a theatre near you
>>
>>4622800
Can you give us concrete evidence, or is this just the general sentiment your taking from our verbal sparring sessions?
>>
>>4622752
Dont forget to post our sheet and the link to the archive Wong!
>>
>>4622815
You mean other than the fact she got Daisuke to agree to help her and is basically following her lead any time she's in the same room as him? Or just the fact that she seems to be genuinely happy and having a good time hanging out with him? Little bit of column A, little bit of column B from me, see?
>>
Should probably put this honor chart up at the top so we can find and gauge our actions without digging through the whole thread.
>>
>>4622832
A VERY HONORABLE SUGGESTION ANON
>>
>>4622828
I fail to see how that's bullying if we agreed to it. Every decision was made with our consent.
>>
>>4622838
Anon bullying isn't coercion.
>>
>>4622842
We were coerced? This is news to me.

Plus, I didn't know the prerequisite for bullying was her having a nice time.

It's almost like there isn't a specific example that comes to mind?

>>
>>4622929

It will work eventually. The thing is, with Swamp Lord currently I have to write tons of notes and think things through so I don't accidentally create a plot hole where X character is in Y province when they're also in Z province, due to its nature as a kingdom-builder quest. With L5R that's less of a problem right now, I know exactly what's going on and where everybody was when.

Now I just have to debate on whether we do Sayaka Gaiden (play as Sayaka for a little bit) or if that would detract from her mystique.
>>
>>4623088
Fine with either desu, though personally I'd say the latter

When Takeshi accuses us of pushing him, we must draw a clear distinction of it being purely emotional push, before we kill him. We are never coming here again, gods fucking damn it.

Then just let them get what they've earned.

Well the real kicker is that if you're burning down buildings for a cause the government's backers support you'll be mysteriously untraceable and if arrested charges will be promptly dropped.
>>
>>4623253

That said, driving is the safest of those means provided you take the needed precautions and are quite careful with where you park and are willing to walk a long distance and have plans to change out a few layers so that 'man in balaclava with brown coat' becomes 'man in grey hoodie with knit cap', etc.

Your uncle's corpse resembles that of some curled-up, dried-out insect. His left hand clutched tight to his chest, his back drawn forward as he hunched over the source of his pain, his right hand still gripping his katana even in death. His head with that malformed mouth and skewed flesh seated at an unnatural angle on his neck, blood seeping from where he struck his skull on the steps. You're not sure whether it was his heart giving out, hitting his head, or breaking his neck that killed him, but he is certainly dead.

You aren't sure how to feel about that. You liked him more than you expected to, somehow, perhaps because of what an unrepentant bastard he was, but it doesn't change the fact that he was a cruel, reckless, arrogant, womanizing wifebeater who made fun of your father's epilepsy. He may be family, but...

>[He was family, and he had family, people can be redeemed]
With a bit of sadness that, in his own way, he was screwed up by Grandpa Arinaga as well. Perhaps he became this way because Juro saw him as his last chance for a heir he deemed worthy.

He was an ass, an old broken down ass, you did not like the man, but the suffering he went through doing his duty was commendable. the fact he died so ignominiously attempting to fulfill his duty was tragic. You pity the bastard, but you won't miss him. He was family, though, and he had family. Whether or not the world is better off with him dead, that's the truth. Yet you're a simple and straightforward warrior, and these are complicated issues. The fact is, the man is dead, and there is work to be done. One step flows smoothly into the next, like a kata.

First is correcting the problem of you looming suspiciously at the top of the stairs. You make your way down the steps with less than indecent haste, calling out as you do, “Uncle has fallen! I need assistance!” You make your way over to him, and crouch down. As you thought, he is dead. Completely dead. No final words, no dramatic exposition, no heartfelt moment of goodbye. That, in your experience, is how people tend to die. Often with a look of surprise, or resignation, if it was too past to twist their faces into a grimace of pain. If they're lucky enough to still have faces, when it's over.

Within less than a minute, a pair of servants arrive, both middle-aged women who shriek and cover their mouths at the sight. You look up at them, “Summon...”

“My aunt. Immediately. Break the news to her gently. His health had been poor for some time, and she may have been prepared for this, but who knows how she will react?” You think for a moment. You aren't on the battlefield, formalities have to be observed. Your instinct is to immediately sever his head, as you would on patrol, but that is wrong and would be a blasphemous breach of etiquette. “You.” You address the slower of the two women, as the faster one makes her way to find Miho, “Find...something to cover him with. A blanket, something like that.”

The servants both do as you direct. One finds a blanket and drapes it over him, the other fetches your aunt. You hear the rapid clacking of her sandals on the polished hardwood floors as she runs with indecent haste to you, her multiple layers of thick kimono getting in the way, “Daisuke-kun!” She cries out, seeing you. She skids to a stop, and drops to her knees, pulling back the blanket. Much to your surprise, tears well up in her eyes, and a sob escapes her throat as she clasps her hands over her face, “My...my...”

And just as you hoped wouldn't happen, Takeshi comes stalking in behind her, rancor visible in his expression. His eyes meet yours, and you can practically see the flames dancing in them. Perhaps Toshiaki's audacity in dying now interrupted something? Spoiled the mood, maybe? Or maybe he found out about the men you spared? His gaze flicks downward, to where Miho's uncovering of the body has exposed Toshiaki's right hand, and the katana still grasped within that withered claw. His gaze flicks back to yours, “Why was he armed, Arinaga Daisuke-san?” They say that being burned by especially great heat, like the kiss of a white-hot brand, feels cold on the skin as the feeling in it dies. Hearing that voice, you can believe it, “You were alone with him. You are the only one who would know what he was defending himself from, aren't you?” He looks up, “He fell down the stairs face-first. He is some distance from the bottom. Moving at speed, I would guess. What was he running from? Why did he feel the need to arm himself, Arinaga Daisuke-san?”

Tacucky should know enough to read the lines about how well his Lord would take finding out that bandits ran rampant in his lands for nearly two years. No point in giving him his opportunity to duel us yet, make him earn it.

You do your best to think of how someone more eloquent might say this. "I illuminated my uncle to the facts regarding the bandits making trouble in his lands. Regrettably, ambition outstripped his physical form, and he took up arms to deal with them." Your gaze meets Takeshi's, "A lack of courage was one flaw my uncle never possessed."

He stares down at you. There is something in his eyes. They are just a hint too wide, you can see too much of the white around them. You remember something your father once said, some men's swords fit too tightly in their scabbards, others too loosely. Whether you meant that as an insult or not (and yes you did), he's taken it as one. "So you killed him, then." He says simply.

Miho looks up, stunned, "What?" Her makeup is streaked with tears.

Takeshi kneels beside her, all but putting an arm around her, "Miho, remember why we didn't tell Lord Arinaga about the troubles? His weakness of breath? How afraid you were that the knowledge would overstrain him?" His sandal coincidentally catches the edge of Toshiaki's katana, so that the reflected light shines in Miho's eyes, "Or that he would go and seek out the brigands like Yoshimitsu-san did and meet the same fate? It is a hard thing, to be a mother on her own. Arinaga Daisuke-san should have considered that. Or perhaps he did. Perhaps he had other priorities." His eyes meet yours, a wicked smile in them.

Miho sniffles, "Takeshi, I...I'm so...I'm sorry, I can't..."

"It's alright. I'll always protect you. To the very end, I will be your sword." He radiates the gallantry of a Genji, "No matter who I must cut, I will do it unflinchingly."

Miho's tears stop, "Thank...thank you Takeshi. Daisuke-kun. I opened my home to you, I cannot believe you would..."

"Tell your husband the truth about the goings-on in his own lands? That your yojimbo got his retainers killed?" Your voice comes out harsh as chipped flint, and she visibly flinches. "That there are orphans in the village because the guards are purely ornamental?"

"Still your tongue!" Takeshi barks at you. His thumb unseats the guard of his sword from the lip of his scabbard. Your hand is on your own before you realize it, though your posture is still casual. "Protecting our lord is our duty. Our sole duty. Even one such as you should know that." His voice drips contempt.

"Enough." Miho's voice is quiet, but surprisingly firm. Daisuke-san." Not Daisuke-kun anymore, "I do not believe this was intentional. Just impatience and appallingly bad judgment. However, you and Takeshi cannot share a roof. I ask that you confine yourself to the guest house, and...it will not be looked on amiss if your business calls you back to your duties before the funeral, four days hence." She stands up, and gestures to one of the two servants, who have been as quiet as mice, "Summon the eta. They will handle the preparations." The mice scurry away, leaving the three living samurai and one dead one alone.

>["The guest house? I will go to the village. When, not if, the bandits come back, they will find one member of the Arinaga family capable of performing his duties. We will see about the funeral if I return."]
>["Very well, but I will attend the funeral. Arinaga Toshiaki will be remembered by at least one man who acted as if he was still alive in his last days."]

>[It is a shame, then, that you failed to consider the possibility of my uncle finding out about the bandits and rendering your brave duty of ignoring the issue to protect him invalid. I will be in the guest house until preparations have been settled.]

Should've included quotes around 'to protect him', ah well. Anyway, I will note i'm also fine with the idea/sentiment of answer 1.

So for those who are curious, the Shiba Bushi is a weird school. Like Hiruma Bushi and a lot of the other "less aggressive" bushi schools it gets its Simple Action Attack at Rank 4, so they're similar in that regard. Its techniques, though, are much less tied to a specific theme, in fact it has a few. Some of them buff the Guard ability (what you used on Sayaka to give her time to get her weapon when those bandits attacked at night), some make it easier for a nearby shugenja to use magic and harder for hostile magic to hit you...but the most important thing it does is buff your Void Points. At Rank 1, a Shiba Bushi can spend TWO Void Points on a roll instead of one, so despite having Awareness 3 and no points in Courtier, Takeshi used two Void and rolled 5k5 to your 5k5 with one Void Point spent. (you got +1k0 from having a point in Etiquette, since you were rolling Etiquette/Awareness, and +0k1 from Benten's Blessing, he just got an amazing roll and spent more of his resources on it than you could). Miho, for her part, also rolled Etiquette/Awareness but failed to beat his roll. Or yours. If she beat your roll but not his she might have thought you actually DID perhaps kill her husband on purpose and react accordingly.

The Rank 5 ability of the Shiba Bushi, incidentally, makes every Void Point they spend count double, so they could spend 2 Void and get +4k4 to a roll. The Rank 5 Hiruma Bushi ability banks any extra damage you had on a roll that killed an enemy and apply it to the next one you hit, which might be a bit less powerful, but Hiruma is more my style because it's more consistent. I genuinely feel bad for discouraging it at the beginning of the quest, Hiruma Bushi is a very cool School.

As a general note, please pick one of the presented options and then put your take on how to specifically respond it beneath, for the sake of easily picking it out of a ton of votes while counting. Only greentext it if it's an actual write-in different than the presented options.
>>
>>4624474
Ah, alright. Makes sense, new to the whole 'actually participating in quests' thing.
>>
>>4624464

Ah, what it means is that you walk the fuck out, pause, and then let Takeshi know as a parting shot that by the way, Toshiaki was on his way to cut him first before dealing with the bandits.
>>
>>4624471
Well the Scout school isnt open yet I think? Those guys are pretty dope too.
>>
>>4624477
Can we combine the parting shot with one of the other options?
>>
>>4624455
"I will have to attend the Funeral Aunt. Because my duty here is not done. A Kuni MUST be sent for to clear your child of taint, Before you take this as an accusation, i believe you are not tainted nor is the child. However this close to the Shadowlands, if the child is not checked, every lord within a dozen leagues will use the possibility as a pretext to remove both you and your child. If not that then the grave insult leveled at you from it. They will operate as the Crab do on the Wall, and even as good as your yojimbo is, He cannot stop a hundred archers at once. once the Kuni comes and judges you pure, that is removed from their options and my duty to the Hiruma is done. Then i can leave. Make no mistake there is nothing for me here and never was, but i WILL do my Duty.

>>4624516
It's literally not our place sadly, and she doesn't WANT the help. We're not going to be able to take the bandits on our own. So our hands are rather tied at the moment until she changes her mind.

If she wants to live in a slowly blooming siege situation where she will starve to death from having all her peasants die and thus no one to work the land to make a harvest or have bandits storm the castle rape her and and kill the kid that is her prerogative. Horse, water, drink and all that.
>>
Man, he really is a cuck. Duty isn't a shield to hide your cowardice behind but Tacucky sure is trying.
>>
>>4624507
Personally, I just think it's going to piss her off further if we mention the kid being tainted immediately after this. Even if we've got a good reason to check, doing it right now after uncle died won't help. We'll need to wait a few days for things to cool down, maybe come back with O-Tora's head as a sweetener first.
>>

I can work this in, but it doesn't address the actual point of whether you're going to the guest house, the village, or not telling them.

Not telling them. I've still half a mind to march out and take out the bandits peace-meal, but it would be a shock to our Scorpion friend.

>>4624535
It's not a Dishonor for us. It is not our land and we are not in their service. Not until the lands fall to us, and when they do we will go talk to Lord Hiruma, and he'll get us a small army to clear the land because it'd give him land to work with and the Hiruma like that sort of shit.

>>4624536
Dishonorable but effective, however i doubt Crab built ruins have a water supply so easily used.
>>
>>4624532
We can't really fight an entire gang of bandits with just us and maybe Sayaka. Now bird-brain doesn't have "Muh lord is dying" to excuse his inaction but I'm sure there'll be some other reason why the ashigaru can't sally forth.

Unless we overstep our authority and demand the levy accompany us or ask for outside help which is a serious disrespect to Miho.

It's just a tall order in general to bring about the end of these bandit scum. And going in half-cocked is a good way to meet a swift end.

"Very well, but I will attend the funeral. Arinaga Toshiaki will be remembered by at least one person who acted as if he was still alive in his last days." Your voice comes out harsh. Angry. You have a right to be. You ignore the way they gawp at you. "It is a shame you failed to consider the possibility of my uncle finding out about the bandits with his mind as sharp as it still was, and rendering your...brave duty...of ignoring the issue to protect him invalid. I will be in the guest house until everything is prepared."

"Do not speak to my yojimbo like that! You forget yourself!" Proper courtly manners would be to ignore rudeness, but right now, manners are rapidly becoming frayed even for Crab lands. Miho grabs Takeshi's sword-hand, and clings tightly to it.

"The only thing your yojimbo's blade has protected is himself, and his little play-fief. How can you claim to be safe when the entirety of the lands your son should inherit have been controlled by brigands for the past two years. They have a castle of their own set up, did you even know that? They menace travelers on the road, while the guards sit behind the wall, gambling and hoping Takeshi does not see fit to punish them in the way his own Clan punished him." You get right into the Phoenix's face., "By the way, Takeshi-san, I should let you know for your own sense of closure. My uncle was quite cross upon learning the fates of his retainers. There was a reason he made quite explicit to me for drawing his sword in his own castle, rather than waiting until he approached the distant bandits to draw." You glance contemptuously at Miho, "...For the sake of my aunt, who I can forgive for not being in her right state of mind, I will spare you the details of what he promised to do to you. Your ears, at least, would have remained intact."

You walk out, and surprisingly, you don't hear the thud of Takeshi's sandals or the whoosh of a drawn blade. You half-expected him to try to stab you in the back.

You make your way back to the guesthouse. The guards bow a little more deeply to you than before, one of them chirping a "Welcome back, Master Arinaga!" How long will that last when they hear the news? What will Takeshi even tell them?

This was a bad place. Now it's a worse place.

[Continue. You might lose Honor for this, but getting angry over being accused of murder is pretty excusable, and it was definitely worth it.]

As a sidenote, there's a really eerie contrast between "I used to namefag in /tg/'s L5R threads, see my storytime screencaps occasionally, and had an entire series of allcaps rants about how not to duel Crane as a Lion" and the realization that today someone whose knowledge of the lore is fresher than mine (and is used to more courtly games not set in Crab lands with tensions running high) is probably writing an angry list of all the etiquette violations thus far.

There is actually a really weird dynamic to this, which might come off as somewhat garbled, but. Generally, in my experience, when someone makes a Crab bushi character, it's the person who thinks the manners and rules of conduct are silly and wants to just ignore them, and has often keyed in on the fact that the GM isn't paying much attention to Honor. Consequently, you get a very stereotypical Hida Bushi. I say often, not always, and I mean it. Here however, we have L5R nerds and fans of other Clans, and consequently Daisuke while still being very Crab is not...O-Ushi levels of Crab.

>>

To avoid what happened with Roarke, when/if Daisuke hits...not necessarily Insight Rank 5, but reaches a certain power threshold and has his story mostly settled, he'll have an epilogue and then there will be a character change. Years from now.

You haven't had time to process any of this, and just as you were starting to think this part of your family might not be so bad, Aunt Miho stopped calling you -kun. You can't see what you could have done better, at least nothing that would be in your character, but you cannot help feeling like father would have effortlessly solved this problem.

You miss him. You still do. People probably thought he was one of those uncaring fathers, with his sternly martial, uncompromising attitude, but he was a good parent. Traditionally, samurai children are raised mostly by the family servants until they are old enough to merit personal lessons, but Arinaga Yudai was of the belief that servants were to care for horses, weapons, cooking, the whims of Arinaga Natsuko, and any chores he didn't see fit to assign to you as a disciplinary measure. Arinaga Yudai treated you like a little soldier from the first time you rolled off your pudgy baby bottom and stood up on your wobbly toddler feet, and he was a man who loved and was loved by his troops. You still have the child-sized bokken he gave you when you took your first steps. It was little more than a crude stick, until your mother took a small knife and a few hours of work to it. “You were born scowling” She told you once, “He was so proud of your warlike face he almost cried.”

He died a good death. A death you are proud of. One you wouldn't wish undone. The privileges of the samurai caste come with duties, and one of those is to fight to the end for Lord, Clan, and Empire. A bushi is never more than three feet from death, he used to tell you.

Your head full of visions of how he would have solved it, ranging from simply executing every one of the bandits with his troops to forcibly conscripting the castle ashigaru and beheading Takeshi on the spot, each unrealistic but satisfying, you forget to announce yourself. Thusly, when you walk into the bedroom you share with Sayaka, the first thing that greets your gaze is a pair of long, magnificent legs. Sayaka is laying on her belly on the futon, her knees bent and feet kicking lazily in the air, a pillow book in her hands. Facing away from you.

Like a civilized human being you removed your shoes at the door. NOTHING will make you forget to do that, you aren't a gaijin tromping around in pointy-toed clogs smearing mud across the tatami mats. You pad slowly, silently towards her.

She doesn't seem to notice you. Turning the page, completely engrossed in it. It has pictures. You slide silently to her knees, reach out...and seize her by the feet. She SQUEALS and squirms as you ruthlessly tickle her soles, her soft toes curling inward. “Daisuke!” There's a bratty wail of protest in that voice, but also...something else. No honorific, for one thing.

Nonetheless, she reacts with serpentine swiftness. You can't hold her thighs together easily as she spreads them apart to draw your hands wide, rolls over quickly to free herself from your grip, and tackles you. The pillow book hits the ground, open to a page showing a woman of the court in the arms of a samurai, neither of them dressed.

Your back hits the tatami mats, the Scorpion girl straddling your waist, hands pressed flat to the ground on either side of your head, her breath hot on your neck. Her dark lips are soft, and moist, and so close to yours. Her kimono is disheveled, hanging off one shoulder to bare the smooth skin beneath. She takes one hand, and slowly runs it over your chest, between the folds of your kimono, feeling the muscles beneath, “Dai...su...ke...” She smiles, shifting her weight against yours and wrapping her legs around you, ankles properly interlocking “For a moment, I thought you didn't view me as a woman.” Her cheeks color slightly, as she reaches up and removes her mask, tossing it to the side. Her green eyes shine with something warm and dangerous, “I won't let you get away with this. Tonight I am an ally of justice.” Her voice lowers to a whisper, “Prepare yourself, evildoer.”

> One of your ancestors has chosen to bestow personal attention on you, constantly offering you advice and making demands. Perhaps the ancestor merely wishes you to live up to the ideals of your Clan and family, or perhaps he has some unfinished task or duty which he wishes you to complete. You must show all due deference and respect to your ancestor, and do your best to live up to his (or her) expectations. If you fail to do so, your ancestor's disapproval will bring bad fortune upon you: so long as your ancestor remains angry, once per session one of your die rolls (chosen by the GM) will suffer a -1k1 penalty.

When you're caught, you're caught. Despite her confidence, you see the little shiver of relief and the way she bites her lip when you start undoing her obi. “...How do you make me this way?” She whispers, as the clothes come off.

You don't leave your room for the rest of the night.

You have heard a thing or two about Scorpion women in passing. You expected an inhuman, dispassionate seductress, a human equivalent of a Bog Hag. Not this athletic, short-haired girl who fumbles so much with getting your clothes off. You didn't expect her to be a virgin, either. Or for her to make a terrible joke about thick Crab noodles only to kiss you before you can reply. You didn't expect her to make those noises when you make her forget what words are a short while later.

You thought that things like this were done, and then they were done. That after the first time you would move on with your night. How wrong you were. She clings close, and you surprise yourself with how little you want to leave the shiny bright spot of your trip, the one good thing about your time in Koumugi Valley. Murmurs of “Impossible woman” and “Best of boys.” turn to kissing, turn to laughter, turn to you pinning her on her back. Temporarily, at least. She is, after all, a girl who enjoys being in the saddle. You put the futon to its proper use over and over. Frenetic at first, hasty and impatient, satiating the hunger that you had been denying, yet as you get to know each other and burn off some of that energy it turns slow and intimate.

In the lulls between making love to Sayaka, she makes tea so that the two of you can rehydrate. A serving woman leaves a tray of food at the door for you, and you're suspicious of it until Sayaka informs you proudly that she spent her time apart from you befriending the staff in pursuit of her inquiries. Although she refuses to let you talk business while drinking tea naked with her, and insists on feeding you with her own chopsticks. So you do the same for her, and eventually she shoves the tray aside and you adjust the pillow to support her head again. When sleep comes, you're still intertwined with her, and both of you are smiling.

Your promotion from Arinaga-kun to Daisuke is complete.

By the way, it is hilarious to me how much more thought some weapon categories have clearly had put into them than others. Heavy Weapons particularly, every last one of them is unique and preferable to someone. The Masakari is a one handed axe that does 2k3, perfectly serviceable if you're two handing for some reason or have one arm. The Dai-Tsuchi is a big hammer that does 6k2 if you want to roll a massive pool of dice and keep the explodiest. The Tetsubo is 3k3, basic bread and butter good damage. The Ono does 0k4, meaning if you have the Strength (or Advantages) to roll at least 4 dice on damage you get to keep all of them, which is massive.

Put it this way, assuming he has Strength 3 and Large at minimum, which without looking at the books he assuredly does, this is O-Tora's damage roll, keeping all results.

Imagine paying 6-15 exp for, say, 1k1 to a bunch of rolls...but if you ever violate some particular requirement, it's gone forever. I mean like ever getting a point of Taint, ever being unarmed, ever turning down a drink, fight, or fuck. Bayushi abandons you if your Honor goes above 5. Some abandon you if you ever retreat from a battle, under any circumstances. Onpy one is different, and he will never abandon you because he's so confident his guidance will get his dear little Spider kohai Tainted to the gills that he never loses faith in you and will always help you with your heretical blood magic.

I found it on the site you listed when you looked up Crabs thread one.

Hiruma Sniper [Bushi] [BoA]
The Snipers are an outgrowth of the fall of Hiruma lands in the eighth century, and the Path does not exist prior to that era. they are trained to stay calm and shoot accurately even when assailed by terrifying monsters, targeting their foes' weak points.

Replaces: Hiruma Scout 4, or Hiruma Bushi 4
Requirements: Kyujutsu 5, Reflexes 4
Technique: The Crab's Eyes - The Hiruma Snipers are trained to strike at specific weak points in their targets, getting their arrows past both mortal armor and monstrous shells and carapaces. You may attack with a yumi as a simple action. When making a ranged attack with a yumi, you may ignore all of the target's natural Reduction (e.g. Reduction from armor or natural protection) and half that much Reduction from magical effects.
>>
>>4625630
>>4625638

Ok, 22 damage. That's still...god damn it Sayaka.
>>
>>4625665

No. Every round you get a Complex Action or two Simple Actions, and normally attacking is a Complex Action. So it gives you a lot of added mobility or two attacks per round.

I think the best counter-play to this for a Crane is for some Crane to pretend that the Crab poem is actually very good in some sort of artsy avant-garde way until the praise for it turns into a game of chicken forcing the Crab to eventually admit they didn't try and that it sucks in an attempt to 'own' the Crane.

Or is that dishonorable somehow?
>>

In all seriousness tomorrow I am going to actually reread Great Clans and get reacquainted with more of the lore, there's enough little details that I can't just make shit up. Fun fact, this is the first time I've ever run in a setting I did not come up with myself, so there are some different habits that have to be learned.
>>
>>4631716
Don't worry too much about research, brother. Just run the game in a way that you're comfortable with. People are following the quest because you like how you're running it, and you don't need to change that for any misguided sense of accuracy.
>>
>>4631700
The best. As only near death experiences can inspire.
>>
>>4631726
+1, especially if accurate lore become garbage storytelling. I'll trust your gut on this, Wong.
>>
>>4631733
>>4631726

Well, knowing for example what traditional crafts in Crab lands are (scrimshaw and sculpture seem like good bets) would help me decide what exactly Sayaka got as souvenirs.
>>
>>4631743
I dont think bonsai goblin will be looked all to kindly upon as a gift by other clans.
>>
>>4631716
As long as you follow the basic rules about the setting and lore, no one is going to complain, we are all here because we like your characters and the adventures they live, also because they have the right ammount of realistic and the right ammount of anime logic
>>
>>4631743
According to Emerald Empire it seems to be mainly tea and Kaiu steel that they're willing to set aside for trade, though that's more on a clan level I guess in terms of exports.
>>
>>4631903
Pretty sure I remember lore mentioning that the Crab makes some excellent sake.
>>
>>4631912
As to be expected. The guys who face down literally hell on the daily probably want some strong sauce to wash away the nightm- I mean memories.
>>
>>4631743
If you want to add some fan made stuff you can add the minor clans from 1d4chan. They are all small and unimportant in the grand scheme of things. But at the same time they all add some character and fill in some holes in the setting. Like the ell clan who are all river patrolling smuggler and pirate hunters to protect the rivers from crime. Or the octopus clan who are all underground artists that create illegal and frond upon art at high quality such as wedding manuals and propaganda papers to anyone who will pay them to do so.
>>
>>4631924

I swear there was a particular village that was known for its amazing sake that the Crane burned down so the Crab could no longer outdo them in something so civilized. If I recall correctly the Harriers were sent, and I am still debating whether or not the Harriers exist (Daisuke wouldn't know either way). On the one hand, they are a massively hypocritical and out of character thing for the Crane to have. On the other...they are a massively hypocritical and out of character thing for the Crane to have.

>We are honorable
>Because we do honorable things
>When we do something that would be dishonorable for you, it is honorable for us
>Because we are so honorable
>Because we do honorable things
>Therefore everything we do is honorable

>>
>>4631938
>Rules for thee
>Never for me

Problem solved.
>>
>>4631938
Isn't that the Daidoji in general though? They tend to eschew the typical Crane mentality after all
>>
>>4631743

>scrimshaw, sake, sculpture, sword-making, and sexy books
>"my child, you have become old enough to be to learn the traditional Crab trades of the five s's."
>'"father, I've only known four of them, what is the fifth?"
>the old man fishes out a pillow book and hands it to their child
>"a favourite in the lands of Crane and Scorpion, valued more highly there than anything from here other than Kaiu steel and the sake that used to come from the Yamakura lands, may they rest peacefully in Yomi."
>>
>>4631938
No clan that remains defenseless to the other clans for any amount of time will remain a clan at all for long. If the Crane did not have a protector to stop them from being steamrolled over. Than the other clans would have wiped them all out long ago. And no amount of begging to the emperor could have saved them in the long run.

the Harriers exist because the Crane need them to exist and without them the Crane would all be dead and forgotten. Or remembered only as the clan of failures that could not stand on there own and were destroyed so as to remove a weakness from the empire.
>>
>>4631743
If I remember correctly, the BIG amazing must get gift that Crab lands produce are Kaiu designed/crafted children's toys.

Might be outside of the ability of Sayaka to procure though.
>>
>>4631993

Most other Clans seem to survive just fine, the Scorpion have major weaknesses in return for having ninjas, and the Crane run the courts already.
>>
>>4631993

Also their protector is the Emperor. Which doesn't mean I'm leaning one way or the other, just that the Harriers are hilariously out of character for the Crane to have.
>>
>>4632051
TBF they are maintained by the most pragmatic of the Cranes, the Daidojis, whom even the crab respect. Not even the current Crane Champion may know they exist since it was a Crane Champion who ordered their disbandment in canon.
>>
>>4631743
>scrimshaw
Rokugani think bones are yucky. "If you touch it you're subhuman" level yucky.
>>
>>4632093

I forgot that was what scrimshaw was, good catch.
>>
>>4632138

No I am not joking. I went 'oh it's those little carvings' and just straight forgot it was carved BONE. Yeah, no way even the Crab are doing that.
>>
>>4631938
I think it's fine as long as the Crane aren't portrayed as consistently outdoing other Clan's specialties.
>>
>>4631716

Misspoke slightly. I said Great Clans, I meant Emerald Empire. Emerald Empire has more of the kind of lore I want (the difference between Crab and Lion dining customs and how to address monks) while Great Clans is almost all metaplot stuff that I'm ignoring. Luckily, the story has been very self-contained so far, allowing me to not even specify a year as of yet.
>>
>>4632174
>specify a year
Why it is the year 1096 of our Lord and I think it's about time we all got up and did something.
>>
>>4632169
It could be justified with the same logic that allows the Rokugani to use leather. The bone could have been ritually purified, removing its (supposed) spiritual taint.
>>
>>4632335
The Rokugani are very iffy on using leather as well.
>>
>>4632349
Excessive amounts of leather, sure. But getting rid of leather entirely makes a lot of the armour used in the setting impossible, so the sensible approach is to water down that weird taboo.
>>
>>4632358
The Rokugani use leather since there's mentions of leatherworkers. But the Unicorn are considered weird for using leather saddles. This is a weird thing, and imho poorly thought out. But in any case, even with purification I don't think they would accept something that does not definitely have to be made from dead animals - like art.
>>
>>4632403
I imagine it would be a niche thing, something akin to the 'Closing Night' play in Crab lands. I'd also imagine that Scorpions would be interested in such trinkets as well, as it plays into their villain motif quite nicely.
>>
In my Rokugan, at least, leather saddles are fine. The Unicorn are looked at funny for their unpronounceable names and the fact that they tend to wear all leathers and furs. It exceeds good taste.
>>
>>4632403
Aren't leatherworkers ETA? the untouchable cast of the Empire?

Boneworkers would likely be the same then. Granted eta in Crab lands would be living better than most, because there is always work for them to do there and Crab would want their leatherworkers and corpse carriers healthy.
>>
>>4632484
Of course leatherworkers are eta, that's not the point. I'm saying that there'll be no demand for bone crafts.
>>
>>4632513
the Unicorn are probably the only Clan with any demand for it. The Moto were steppe nomads that used to worship Death Gods, and the Iuchi use all sorts of weird shit for their magics

It's still a hell of a gempukku though. "Now that you're done with your graduation ceremony, prove to us that you're a manipulative asshole who psycho-analyses everyone around him, even on the most important day of his life. >>4632955
>going out into a twisted hellscape to cut off the head of a monstrosity
What, specifically? Does the humble goblin count, or does it need to be something crazy?
>>
>>4633128
Anything counts its just that the bigger and badder the kill the more glory and fame you get. If you cut off the head of just one goblin or zombie you will have proven that you can at least fight and kill monsters so there is no shame in that. But at the same time the clan does not expect much from you until you prove you can do a better job than just one weak goon. If you can kill ten or more goblins or zombies by your self then that proves you are a badass and gets you lots of respect and opportunity's later in life. If you can kill ten ogres or somehow kill an Oni by your self than you have it made for life in the crab clan. And everyone will see you are the biggest badass in the whole clan for your generation. But you will also have to keep being just as successful as you were for your gempukku or the clan will think you are getting lazy and kick your ass so as to get you fighting at top form again.

One thing i'm sure there are plenty of in-lore reasons for, as well as basic "it's not actually japan" to cover it, but L5R's distaste towards firearms is incredibly boring compared to Japan's actual historical autistic love, rapid introduction and use (even during Japan's most vehement isolationist peroids) and subsequent craftsmanship and detail put into some of the guns they used that almost rivals the lore and fetishization of swords.
>>
>>4634057
I'm sure if Rokugan was in a state of political instability and anarchy instead of a carefully maintained and delicate as tissue-paper mix of peace and ritualized warfare, they'd love firearms as well. Any of the Great Clans probably has more territory than any of the warring states.

Also the historic original Gun Trade had Daimyo converting to Christianity left and right to get better deals with European traders which the Emperor would not tolerate. That's a big ban on firearms for you.
>>
>>4634080
I'd argue that they'd love firearms even in a carefully maintained and delicate as tissue-paper mix of peace and ritualized warfare.

Regardless, like I said, I'm sure there are plenty of cogent in-lore reasons, I just think it's boring.
>>
>>4634084
The ritualized wars are actually fraud to maintain a peacetime state with a large warrior elite that would mostly be unemployed otherwise. They're actually as much about keeping the SAMURAI in check than any of the Great Clans. The wars are about satisfying the Samurai's honorgloryboner in a way that doesn't damage the rest of the economy too badly. At least if a Samurai died fighting another Samurai, the other Samurai could chalk it up to a lack of skill, definitely nothing that would happen to them personally with their own obviously superior school techniques. But if random Samurai are collapsing with bullet holes in the chest, and takeover of the entire country isn't one of the things anyone stands to gain from risking their lives on the battlefield then no one would want Firearms. Holy shit, the Great Clans are basically the superstates from 1984.

Also, it would be hilarious if the Imperial Legions had every ashigaru and their dog be equipped with a musket. It's honorable for them to use gunpowder weapons because they're honorable therefore what they do is honorable. Are you questioning the honor of the Emperor's personal army?
>>
>>4634057
>>4634103
Imperial Histories 2 ? IIRC *does* give the not!-Boshin War Rokugan at least.
>>
>>4634103
Eh, I dunno. I get what you're saying - and I think if widespread firearm usage WAS common in Rokugan, I could see it being far more of a Samurai thing, not something given to the peasants and Ashigaru. I could see a reality where immaculately crafted and decorated matchlocks are used; with their handling, the precise count of powder grain, and bullet style treated as an art, used like Kyudo or somesuch. I don't have some perfect idea, but I think anything along those lines would be more interesting than. "No guns"
>>
>>4634125
Kyujutsu, Kenjutsu, etc are only treated as an art because their effectiveness increases with how good you are. You can't aim with a matchlock for shit, they're only useful in massive formations, and a peasant can learn how to use it in a week. You're not satisfying your honorboner no matter how much gold you slap on it.

Also matchlocks would make it really easy to take another Samurai's life to the point that inter-clan warfare becomes unsustainable. Now the Emperor has to step in and forbid it because the Clans would destroy the entire Empire if they could except it's probably harder to stop the Lion Clan from fighting the Crane Clan than it is to just ban firearms over my honor.
>>
>>4634141
Additionally, firearms make it real easy for peasant rebels to be an effective fighting force.
>>
>>4634152
As I said before, in my imagined scenario, if this were to be a thing in Rokugan, they'd probably be almost unobtainable to random peasants, along with their ammunition.

>>4634141
>You can't aim with a matchlock for shit
Yes you can. An expert shot, even for a more primitive form of firearm like a matchlock, is far better than a peasant who 'learned how to use it in a week'. This only starts to actually be true when you go back to early hand cannons. This is ESPECIALLY untrue when you get to the point of craftsmanship that some Tanegashimas got to. As for ease of killing other samurai, the same could be said for most ranged weapons, the only difference is the ease of picking it up and learning the very basics, but i'm fairly sure there could be easy workarounds written in a fictional setting.

Like i've repeatedly said, I know that AS IT IS CURRENTLY WRITTEN IN ACTUAL L5R, THERE ARE REASONS WHY THIS ISN'T A THING.

Still, swords and bows are cool, but guns are the coolest things humanity has ever invented, so not having them is BORING.
>>
>>4634155
That being said, if there was widespread gunpowder use in l5r, how would it differ from clan to clan?

For me, it would be like this.

>Crab Clan
Fuckoff handheld cannons for blasting the faces of Ogres of with one shot. Alternatively, scatter shot for dealing with goblin hordes. Hirumi scouts don't use firearms as much because they need to stay stealthy and a bow isn't as much of a bitch to reload.

>Crane Clan
The autistic attention to detail mentioned earlier, combined with long, thin rifled barrels. More hunting pieces than battlefield weapons, you'll still be pegged from a mile away.

>Dragon Clan
Carry two single-handed blunderbusses for bursts of rapid fire. (Get it? Because blunderbusses are also called dragons?)

>Lion Clan
Combination weapons of every type, if you can't prove you can use 36 different kinds of weapons as well as nail the target with the firearm in the hilt/along the blade/etc then you don't pas your gempukku.

>Mantis Clan
A big brace of pistol hanging from the chest. No, they don't look like pirates, what are you talking about? Also, the same firearm autism as the crane except towards naval cannons. A good Mantis cannoneer can do all kinds of crazy shit, including skipping a cannonball across the water so that it smashes straight through the waterlines of multiple ships.

>Phoenix Clan
Firearms are bad because violence is bad, there is a peaceful solution surely? There is only one recorded example of a phoenix-designed firearm being used. When questioned about it, all they said was 'never again'.

>Scorpion Clan
Hidden pistols in everything. You see that pillow book? Pistol. Anything that isn't a pistol is a gunpowder flask that can be jury-rigged into a bomb.

>Unicorn Clan
Long-barreled pistols suited for charging in, discharging an accurate shot, then riding away. Unicorn Cavalry is feared for cyclical, wheeling charges where they ride into an enemy's range, fire, then ride out before the enemy can respond. Strangely, the most damage is still being done when the Unicorns ditch their firearms and resort to a melee cavalry charge. How is that tactic still relevant in the gunpowder age?
>>
>>4634189
I would argue if I had any dissentions but all of those are pretty good and fit well with my understandings of the clans, well done.
>>
>>4634189
I'd argue that cavalry nerds like the Unicorn would go for the Swedish "one shot then charge" tactic.

Btw I don't remember if pistols were ever used in Japan. IIRC they only had matchlocks, and a matchlock pistol is a travesty.
>>
>>4634214
Of course they did, they loved guns, it'd be weirder if there weren't japanese matchlock pistols.
>>
>>4634057

The biggest reason is that a gun is much less impressive when you can hurl fireballs. Not to mention, it does the unthinkable act of narrowing the power gap between an unwashed eta and a famed swordsman. Meanwhile, magic is something the samurai caste can control (well, aside from Maho, but that's a big no-no too) and is inherently in tune with the kami and thus full of big honor.
>>
>>4634391
>Not to mention, it does the unthinkable act of narrowing the power gap between an unwashed eta and a famed swordsman.
I think that's the big reason. L5R was made to appeal to the pop culture perception of samurai as elegant, cultured masters of the blade and guns water that down. It's why it's only a good setting if you're a surface level weeb or not a weeb at all. Greater weebs end up distressed by how inaccurate and boring it is compared to actual historical Japan.
>>
>>4634404
>Greater weebs end up distressed by how inaccurate and boring it is compared to actual historical Japan.
Or even Chanbara movie Japan.
>>
New phone let's see if I remember my trip.

>>4634424

Revolvers might as well be the death star in proper chanbara because six shots, it's great.
>>
>>4634404

Paradoxically those greater weebs aren't quite weebs at all because they want their nanban trade and "Oda-dono did nothing wrong", not "muh katana cuts the gaijin tank". Weebs get upset at L5R being not quite Japan, generally.

Look, when a man literally signs his letters "Demon Lord Oda Nobunaga" just to troll a bunch of pissy monks and their so-called protector, then invents firearms tactics more advanced than those used in Europe at the time despite the Portugese selling him his guns, he deserves a promotion above "random Jap".

The next morning, sunlight filters into the room. Pale, and somehow fragile. It feels inappropriate, with the solid reality of Sayaka's arm thrown across your chest and her bare face resting against your shoulder. She stirs blearily, sits up, and winces, “Ohh...” She sucks in a breath, and slumps back down against you, “I'm so glad it wasn't a dream.”

You were, like most young samurai, warned about Scorpions via cultural osmosis. That admission, that naked, uncomplicated happiness on her face, was not what you expected at all. Sayaka, as far as you can tell, is just Sayaka. However, you are a Hiruma-trained swordsman, and wary pragmatism is practically your motto. It would be an insult to her not to be at least a little bit wary that you have been seduced for a purpose.

That purpose, however, seems to center temporarily on her feeling sore and clingy and wanting you to keep her warm on a cold, foggy morning. Still, bit by bit, you get dressed, you clean up, you have a surprisingly arduous time finding your fundoshi until it mysteriously turns up beneath Sayaka's discarded jingasa. You hold her for a while, while she counts syllables on her fingers and tries to come up with a haiku for her feelings...something about a stone monolith guiding her through fog, but she can't quite get it right and eventually just settles for leaving a few more kisses on you. Eventually, she trusts her legs enough to make tea and call for your morning meal.

While you eat, you exchange information, with her asking first, “What happened yesterday? You were...different when you first came in. I've never seen you so tense, so angry.”

So you tell her.

So you tell her everything, “...And that is why my aunt isn't calling me Daisuke-kun anymore.”

She regards you seriously, “That man is already planning to kill you. You could not possibly be a greater threat to him, and while he may hold the fear of the castle's heimin today, a week from now you will have supplanted him thoroughly. It's true, I did hope to question your uncle at some point, but fortune interceded. I didn't just sit here and read, you know. While you were gone, I spoke to the oldest servants I could find. Your uncle had an...interesting life.”

You grunt, “I'm aware of what he did.”

“I mean even when he was at a young age, some of the elderly serving women spoke of...” She catches your expression. “Goodness, it may be the samurai way to ignore dishonorable behavior, but we are here to ferret out truths and punish evildoers, Daisuke. Don't scowl. No, it's a good scowl, I like that scowl, but you don't need to. Goodness, you sound like your father.”

“You never knew my father.” You point out.

“No, but some of the oldest servants did. He does sound a lot like you.” She smiles, “Ah, there we go. I see a smile. Just a little one, but if I feed it it will grow big and strong.” She clacks her chopsticks together, “...And then I shall gobble it up.” She pretends as if she's about to pinch your cheeks with the chopsticks.

You fend her off, trying not to smile, “So what did you learn?”

She smiles, “Firstly. How do you think the servants here regarded my aunt?”

>[“She was loved.” Explain why]
>[“She was hated.” Explain why]

Well, looks like it's time to go check the second thread
>>
>>4635478
I would assume that she would not be well liked, given your claim that her letters mentioned my uncle being unwilling to let his appetites be placed aside after getting married to her. From what you've mentioned, she had claimed your mother "provoked" him when your family last visited. I'd think it's likely she would have made similar claims in the past regarding the houseservants when my uncle showed similar interests in them, and likely had better success in dealing with them.
>>
>>4635478

>[“She was loved.” Explain why]

I don't think she was entirely hated here. Even if they may not have been fond of her, she wouldn't have tolerated the Peacuck's shenanigans. She wouldn't have had Okimura open his belly in protest of Yori's death, and she would have sent out them and most of the Ashigaru with Yoshimitsu to cut O-Tora down. The servants wouldn't need to walk on eggshells around her yojimbo, every mistake being drastically punished. Even if it may not have been a particularly happy household, it was one more stable for the smallfolk in it. A rosier time tends to stand out as better than it actually was when compared to the problems of today.
>>
>>4635478

>>
>>4635478
>>[“She was loved.” Explain why]
And pitied

Theres surprisingly little our family servants have had to say of our late aunt in our earshot. But the comment by our uncle that she was uninteresting and the expression of pity from the old lady at the noodle shop point towards some pity for her being subjected to the old man.
>>
“She was loved, I'm sure. She never would have tolerated any of what is happening here now. Even if it was not a particularly happy household, the villagers would not be living in fear of O-Tora while the servants live in fear of Takeshi. A rosier time tends to stand out as better than it actually was when compared to the problems of today.”

“You're sweet, but no.” Her smile fades, “My aunt was not well loved, and they have not forgotten it. She was cruel, tyrannical with her husband out of the house. She mistreated the servants. Mostly the women. Most especially the pretty women, and by all accounts your uncle did not usually take her side. Sometimes she received the back of his hand for it, but when he left she would vent her fury on those around her all over again.” She sighs heavily, “And she was irrational, after the split with our family. Paranoid.” Her shoulders slump, “Your uncle was out of the house, hunting, on the day of her death. All day. He was the last one to hear about it.”

“So there was no murder.” You note.

She shrugs, “According to the heimin, it was Miho who found her after the fall. Which must have been awful for her, given she was only eight years old at the time.”

“Where did she fall from?” You ask. The next logical question.

“To the window, Daisuke!” She takes your arm. Samurai touching each other is normally dishonorable, but in private, between two people who share a bed? It's understandable and thrilling. She leads you to the window and points up at the keep. “You see the levels of roof, yes? Second from the top, the southeastern corner.”

You note that with the flatness of the roof and the distance from its edge to any of the windows, she could not simply have been leaning out of the window and have been pushed. She either went there by means of her own feet, or was conveyed there. Suicide is the simplest option, but...

Arinaga Chouko was a samurai. Simply put, when a samurai ends their life in protest, they do not do so by means of throwing themselves off a roof into the gardens below, a decidedly messy death. As a trained courtier of the Scorpion, a member of the most politically potent and savvy Clans in the Empire, she would have had the procedures drilled into her head and if the dishonor became too much jigai would be the path of least resistance, “How was she dressed?” You note.

“In her usual attire. I see what you're thinking. She was rather vain, she always wore finery.” Sayaka smile.

“Either she walked out to the roof, or someone dragged her there.” Admittedly, the knowledge that your uncle was not involved is a surprising relief, “From there she fell, not dressed for death, and not ending her life in the traditional way. If she truly wanted to hurt my uncle, it would have been a scandal for her to commit suicide in protest anyway. As it stands, no one ever looked into the death, I'm sure it was officially labeled an accident.”

“Sadly, this eliminates our best suspect.” Sayaka shakes her head, “A pity.”

“Who?” You ask, but the answer is somehow unsurprising.

“The person she was more cruel to than anyone. Arinaga Miho. Thankfully, no murderess has cause to no longer call you Daisuke-kun. My aunt, you see, was a tall, fit woman. She was a fine kemari player and an expert swimmer, she even practiced jiujutsu. My mother drew more than one comparison to her to scold me when I expressed the desire to learn of her fate. An eight year old girl simply could not have dragged her to the edge of the roof. Your aunt today probably could not have done it.” Sayaka smiles.

I mean with how many enemy's she made of the servant girls with the way she vented her fury on those around. I would not put it past the servant girls to all gang up on her and toss her out a window in revenge. It would not be the first time servants have banded together to get rid of a cruel lord or lady. Then take that secret with them to there grave so as to avoid punishment for there crime.

Wild Guess: Chouko tried to kill Miho. Someone or something intervened, and then Miho covered it up.

I mean, if we get another (admittedly unlikely) chance to talk to Miho, we could ask her about her old clan's customs and learn that way, maybe when we ask her about getting Shirou checked out by a Kuni Witch Doctor.

Too proud to commit suicide, and Loyalty is one of the few virtues of the Scorpion. Risking scandal for them is not done, even if she's not really a Scorpion anymore. Old habits die hard, especially when they can result in the Traitor's Grove in your old life.

Uncle Toshi was out hunting when she died, so it'll only be their word for it. Some of his retainers would have been out hunting with him, probably Yoshimitsu and Yori, since they give me the vibes of being the closest to Uncle. If Okimura was busy with the ward Miho, the servant women would have the opportunity to mob her and push her off. Then, merely spread the rumours around her mysterious demise in he village later on, and let their lord's unsavoury reputation do the work for them.

>>
You don't need a definitive answer now, “The retainers? I doubt they would do such a thing. They gained nothing by it and risked uncle's wrath. Impulsive suicide seems more likely. She saw something, or learned something, that unhinged her enough to plummet. That spot has a very good view of the grounds, after all. On the other hand, the servants had reason to hate her, and if several women grabbed her she would stand no chance. Or...perhaps it really was Miho. I remember something about the Centipede Clan being shugenja, magic could have been involved. Besides, there are far too many unanswered questions about her. She was the first one there, the one who found the body. If it fell into the gardens, there are many places where it would have been difficult to see from the ground, but from above? My gut says Miho, although who can tell whether the circumstances lay against her?” Although you feel like you would have heard by now if she was a shugenja, you can always ask, particularly if you get the chance to talk to her again, “Sayaka, are you still certain about this? No matter what, the answer won't be something you're happier knowing.”

“I convinced my mother to let a minor cold keep her home and send me, a mere cavalier of my Clan, in her stead...admittedly with at least two senior courtiers and several bodyguards, and everything else.” She's trailed off into a mumble by the end, but nods firmly, “I am even more certain than ever, Daisuke. I have come too far to see this done. The question now is, what next?”

Hear me out - I think we should wait on Takeshi until at least after the funeral, on the off chance Takeshi says something, whether we lead him on or not, into saying something that would put his foot into his own mouth. Having read about Crab funerals, saying pretty much anything negative about our uncle would be a faux pas. You turn your head towards Sayaka, “We walk out of this place, and we remove each and every bandit preying on Crab peasants from these lands.”

She smiles broadly, “Action.” Her green eyes narrow, “You don't know how much trouble you avoided being in by saying 'we' instead of 'I', Daisuke.”

You grin at her. It's a smile more suited to your face than flirting, or courtly graces. This is who you are, this is what you do, and the role fits you as well as your saya fits your katana, “A bushi is never more than three feet from death.”

Her grin becomes challenging, “Whoever said that never saw you pick up a bow.” She takes two fingers and jabs them into your chest, mimicking the sound of your arrows hitting the bandits in the forest. “Thwip!”

“When the problem is solved, I will deal with Takeshi.” The 'I' is deliberate. So is the firm look you give her, “I will not have that ronin staining my family's honor any further. Once he is exposed as a coward, I will denounce him.” The part about you ending his miserable life is unspoken but plainly implied.

“How splendid! You're being glorious this morning, Daisuke! I'll take credit for it, yes I will!” Sayaka's eyes are shining as she gazes at you, “Ah, but you're sure he is a ronin?”

You nod, folding up the futon and putting it away in its closet. This would normally be a servant's job, but you're used to the Wall, where one has to get used to keeping one's space clean oneself. “I've been thinking about it. A relative of the Bayushi might not experience it quite the same way, but every samurai capable of wielding a blade has some duty to attend to. I am a hohei in the First Crab Army, Fourth Legion. Although his duties were relaxed when my grandfather died and he inherited the family estates, my uncle was a yojimbo for a member of the Yasuki family and attended his lord at court. I gather he was more companion and spectacle in his own right than silent duelist, from what my father told me. You yourself said you are...”

“Officially I am a court guard. Mother makes no secret that she plans to have me made a cavalry commander once I have some seasoning.” Sayaka smiles, “It's the bisento, something to lean on makes me look much more official.”

“See? If even Kodo Sayaka has to stand guard duty when she isn't touring Sunda Mizu Province, the bastard son of an Isawa, discredited and nigh-plucked by his relatives, surely would not be released from whatever inglorious post he was assigned simply to play yojimbo for a Crab landowner's wife. The very idea is ridiculous. Take credit for that, too, you put it in my head. He's run away from his own Clan to play lord somewhere else. He's a ronin at best, and a wanted man at worst. A girl from a Minor Clan, raised with only my uncle and his retainers around as samurai company, might not even have realized that.” As you talk, you begin packing, and Sayaka does the same.

Normally, one or both of you would have been chosen to take a shift in the honor guard standing watch over your uncle's body. However, your aunt's words made it clear that you are not welcome, and will have no part in this honorable role. Normally you would be an obvious pick to be the chief mourner, too. Oh well. Carrying out your uncle's dying wish will just have to suffice to appease his shade. Letting him be a pain in the ass one last time feels like a kind of perverse tribute to him. Let your aunt and her yojimbo do this alone, just as they set out to be. As you leave the guesthouse and step outside, you can see servants gathering flowers for wreaths and constructing white paper lanterns to hang all over the keep.

An elderly servant woman, who despite her peasant status was probably once attractive, is putting special effort into braiding together the flowers. She smiles broadly when she sees Sayaka, and bows deeply, “Noble samurai, please stay for the funeral. Having at least some family here would have made our lord happy.”

“We will return for the ceremony.” You inform her, although as a peasant you could have just ignored her. “Has a monk or shugenja been summoned yet to perform the necessary purifications?” A subtle way to ask about something that has been nagging at you. The Centipede Clan has something to do with the Phoenix, which makes you think of shugenja. Is your aunt a shugenja? You don't know, you've never heard of such a thing.

“No, Arinaga-sama. Lady Arinaga said she would be taking care of such things herself.” Ah, so she is a shugenja. Or joining a monastery, which seems less likely. Strange for a shugenja to have no duties other than managing her husband's estate, but there you have it.

“Perfect, then all is as it should be.” You nod, and the two of you pass out, down the first set of switchbacks, towards the first gatehouse. As you go, you explain more of your plan to Sayaka...

If he's a big bad Hida-style ronin like we're expecting, it'll be best for us to draw him out to be pulled apart piecemeal, like a wolf drawing out a moose into the fray. Making a stand in the village is tempting, but I don't think a mob of peasant levies will help much against him men. Most of them were ex-ashigaru from what I gathered, and will be difficult for them to be much help. We may end up fighting him in his own quarters, which isn't ideal, but if his men are scouring the area for us, they aren't harassing the villagers and ambushing travellers anymore.

It could actually be way worse. Some bandits are just hinin or heimin who broke the law and decided "fuck this Celestial Order", some are decently geared thugs like this, and some are gangs composed entirely of ronin with remarkably decent stats listed in Enemies of the Empire.

Alas work has once again stolen my ability to vote for nearly the whole session.

CoconutCrabs are known to swarm injured creatures and essentially eat them alive as there powerful pincers tear flesh and bone alike off their prey and they can smell blood in the air from hundreds of feet away. Basically they are landsharks.

This seems to be the better of the two options, staying by the castle and our Aunt and Mr. Peacock seems like a bad idea to me. It also gives up the initiative which, with such a small force seems foolish.

I would like to forward the idea of speaking with several important individuals in the village to gauge their overall readiness for an attack.

I also want to ask for group consensus on calling a Magistrate on the bandits anyway, and also of following through on getting a Witch Hunter to asses the taint of the child before we set off on our mission to rid the land of bandits. I don't know how or if the magistrate would be able to levy troops, but at least this way there's a chance that the village won't be sacked while we fight raiding parties. I don't know if getting others involved would be dishonorable, so that would be my only hangup.

I like everything about this plan. >>4635865
My only concern is that if we are successful in drawing out O-Tora, his retribution will be at the village, and without any extra protection, I think large scale death would be very likely.

The whole idea of doing the attacks like this was to draw them away from the village.

We could warn them in advance that we're attacking the bandits and to stay low but word will surely filter back. I think it best we not mention much and the villagers to not be of much use to the bandits.

Oh, right. Honor gains and losses. Major Etiquette Breach for the fracas earlier. Facing a superior foe in the name of your Clan by deciding to challenge the bandits. You also told the truth regardless of how it could bite you in the ass to both Toshiaki and Miho, I'm counting that as one incident since each on their own is sort of iffy. Now to dig through the thread and find that chart...

I'm assuming these get added in at the end of each session for the sake of my sanity, so you get slightly less for challenging all the bandits because you crest Honor 5 again. -2 for the etiquette breach. +4 for the truthful report at your own expense. Possibly +2 more if I check the log and you really endured an insult to yourself (I'm leaning towards no since you did talk back). +6 for protecting your family's interests despite great risk to yourself, I had the wrong entry in mind. +3 for your stalwart defense of the heimin, a duty many samurai ignore.

I'm as surprised as you are, I genuinely thought you would lose honor for this. I guess being relentlessly brave in a really lethal system where goblins get two attacks per turn has its perks.

Gobbos get two attacks? Isn't that something samurai only get at like, third rank, and only with certain weapons? Damn.
What are oni like then?

An oni, even a weak one, can tpk a full player group dedicated to killing them.

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Memories_of_a_Stone_Wall

Is a good primer for how utterly nutso things can get.
>>
>>4636856
Oni are much like daemons from warhammer fantasy. But instead of being German catholic ideas of what a demon is they are japans buddhism idea of what a demon is for the most part. The oni may also be stronger than the daemons as the oni are just as unreal and blatantly supernatural as the daemons are but the oni have true invincibility to all mundane things in the mortal world. And the only way to hurt them is to use magic or jade as everything else will just bounce off of them like you have just punched a mountain side with your bare hand.
>>
>>4636970
Now now Oni can be killed with mundane arms, just it usually involves twice to three times their weight in ranged projectiles hitting them all at once.

Some men have what it takes and most other men simply don't. Its not our fault that we are a badass that can do things the right way without really trying vary hard at all. It just comes with being a normal sized man that has good looks that lives in a clan full of giants with ugly faces. You need to grow up both smart and tough to make it in the crab clan when you are small and pretty else everyone will pick on you for the rest of your life.

Being batshit crazy about fighting the shadowlands even by the standards of the crab clan also helps a lot.

And that is how we turn this setting in to Elder Scrolls what with all the Dragon brakes and other time shattering shenanigans going on in that setting. Because picking fights with time is how you get Dragon brakes all over the place. Is that what you want? To turn in to a monkey man and dance on top of a tower so as to cut the god of time in two. So that he is now the elf god of time and the dragon god of time at the same time. Is that what you want to have happen? For elves to invade this setting as well you bastard. You elf loving bastard.

You and Sayaka make your way down into the village. The heimin there seem worried to see you apparently leaving, and there are a chorus of muffled gasps when you address the nearest farmer and ask where the watchtower to the south is.

“Please, Crab-sama.” The farmer bows deeply. He has no reason to know you're a member of the family, “You must not go that way, the rumor is that the bandits make their hideout there. It would be safer to go...” His voice trails off as he takes in your expression, “Crab-sama, have I given offense? Please, do not be angry!” He genuflects in the dust.

You sigh heavily, “My anger is not directed at you, and it will not be sated easily. Tell me the way, I have duties to perform.”

Still on his hands and knees in the dirt, the peasant draws a few lines representing roads, and shows you the way, “Travel due south. The hills are a difficult climb in most places, but there is a trail on your left if you go through the fields...I will guide you that far, my lord...and beyond that, the land gently slopes downward to the south, towards Earthquake Fish Bay. When the forest turns to bamboo, you will know to look out for a small river. If you follow this river south, it will bring you right to the old watchtower. In past generations, the samurai of this land kept a garrison there, but now it is all but abandoned. It sits equally distant from the village and the other fork of the road that leads here. We seldom get travelers, so the bandits have to prey on both, you see?”

“It's widely known that Lord Arinaga is in poor health, otherwise his lord might have ordered him to deal with the bandits already. They are taking a risk lingering here this long, I wonder why?” Sayaka muses.

The peasant, a man with a face rather like a ferret, shrugs helplessly. He picks himself up, and leads you out of town, showing you a little trail between two hills that descends down into the forest. From there, you slip down into the forest, and out of sight.

Unfortunately for O-Tora's bandits, you were trained to avoid oni, and their eyes are not as keen as those of some slavering, chitinous hatebeast. You were also trained to navigate through the Shadowlands, which this is not.

Through the woods, you make your way, as the trees turn to bamboo. Bamboo is considered lucky, Crab chopsticks are made out of the stuff by preference because of its persistence, so you can't help but feel at peace in the midst of the tall, green stalks. You take care not to splash when you must cross through the river, and to stay beneath the cover of the trees.

You spot the watchtower around mid-day, looming over the forest. It sits atop a pimple of stone, a great lump of rock, treeless save for some scrubby pines that have found enough soil to cling to the stone, a rise created by whatever flex of the land created the valley in the first place. It is mossy, poorly maintained, but you easily get close enough to see the makeshift patches on the roof and the armored bandits holding spears. Their patrolling skills have clearly gone to rust, they're sloppy, but there is an aura of them trying very hard suddenly to do it right. Most likely because so many of their number have vanished in the past few days after years of being ignored.

Still, you aren't after the tower. Not yet. You need to scale this fish before you filet it. You continue further south, the guards never noticing your presence as you slink through the bamboo with barely a bent stalk to mark your passage, towards the road. You are still a fair distance away from it when you smell woodsmoke, and in the distance spot a campfire. Although you watch it for some time, you see only one figure sitting around it.

A man of average height and skinny build, the most noticeable feature about him is that his right arm is missing below the elbow. He wears white cloth wrapped around his head, forming a hood, a mantle over his shoulders, and a covering over the lower half of his face. He wears a simple, tan robe and armor the glistening brown of a beetle's shell, the color of no clan. A long, ugly, vertical scar bisects his face, all the way down his forehead, splitting his eyebrow and cheek. He bears no swords, simply a plain and serviceable nagamaki on a sling over his left shoulder. He looks like a monk, a sohei from a martial temple.

Trust is important in these kind of situations. A healthy wariness is just as important. Seeing as we are the archer and scout of our group we should watch Sayakas back as she finds out who this man is. Our bow is faster than our sword when we have it ready for action after-all. Do not quote me on that i do not know how stats work. I just thought that line sounded cool.

“It could be a trick.” You murmur to Sayaka, as quietly as you can as the two of you circle so that it looks like you're coming from the road, if he sees you, “Monks do fall victim to temptation and get cast out of their temples sometimes, after all. If he's even a monk.”

“That nagamaki is shiny and new.” She notes, “But his armor looks well-worn.”

You nod, “The bow is faster than the sword when already in hand.” You draw your bow, string it, and crouch behind a stand of bamboo while she makes her way forward.

The sohei rises at her approach, and she bows. He stiffly bows in return, and pulls down his mask, revealing a long grey mustache and beard. His entire face wrinkles with his smile as he gives her a blessing and gestures with his single arm for her to join him. Cleverly, she sits down facing your location, where if the bandits approach her from behind they will be easy prey for her arrows, and so will the sohei's exposed back. Normally mistreating a monk would be scandalous, but right now you are effectively at war.

Several minutes tick by. The sohei chatters animatedly with Sayaka, gesturing around at the forest. He points in the general direction of the watchtower and shakes his head vigorously as if warning her about it. He opens up a small box, and offers her a rice ball. She accepts, munches on it for a bit, and continues talking with him. More time passes, and she looks directly at you and beckons, speaking in soothing tones to the monk, who probably wonders what is going on.

You make your approach, but the monk doesn't turn around just yet, “...No, young lady, I understand perfectly why he would conceal himself until you are certain. These are dangerous times, and this is a dangerous stretch of road, which is why I am here. People are suffering, and it is my duty as one of the...” He turns to face you, and blanches, “A...a phantom? No...no, you're real.” There is unmistakable recognition on his features.

You stop and regard him quizzically. You cannot say you have ever met him before. “Are we acquainted?” You ask, once you have exchanged respectful bows.

“Arinaga Daisuke. I am told I resemble my father, Arinaga Yudai, a Shireikan of the First Crab Army.” You yourself are only a Hohei, a Private. Your father sat you down at a young age and explained to you that your career was not going to be a fair one. Most sons of men of status are given a significant boost up, but as far as he was concerned he was going to strew your road with as many rocks as he had to climb in his own upward path. It was a precious gift, one many children would have been infuriated with, but you started at the bottom. Honorably. “Honored monk, were you an acquaintance of his?” Perhaps he served under him, although the man is considerably older than your father. He must be in his seventies, at least. Well past his prime.

For a moment, there is silence, then the monk lowers his head. His shoulders quiver, but he does not lose face despite the powerful emotions clearly boiling inside him, “Arinaga Daisuke.” He repeats. “At last, there is a member of the family capable of doing what must be done. What I failed to do when I was a samurai.” He takes a deep breath, looks into your eyes, and nods, “Please, let me introduce myself as I have to your companion. The name I go by is Yoshi. Once, I was a samurai who lived in that castle. Perhaps you have heard the tale.”

“A tale that ended in the death of a family retainer named Yoshimitsu.” You fold your arms, “How is it that you live?”

He smiles bitterly, “Old age. My eyes are not so keen as they were when I was young, nor my footing so agile. It was dark, and we were fighting by the river. That great brute of a ronin raised his axe high, but before I could stab through his eye socket my foot slipped in the mud and my leg twisted beneath me. The force of his stroke crushed my sword arm through my bracer, slashed open my face and cut through my armor to splatter blood from my chest. I fell into the water and he, satisfied, moved on. At first I lay there in shock, convinced I was dead and had not yet realized it, but as it happened fate was not done with me. I managed to stand, but was so nauseated and dizzy with pain that I could not navigate my way back to the village.”

“I stumbled here and there, and as I did, I theorized that perhaps this was my kharma for attempting to act as a samurai after shaving my head and retiring from my duties. That fate was punishing me for this sly disloyalty. Yet, as the Little Teacher says, 'mortal men have the power to change destiny', and I persevered, walking without knowing where I was going or who I was, until at last I encountered a monk even older than I. He assisted me with amputating my useless arm, although you would be surprised at how hard I can hit someone with the stump of my forearm these days, and treated my wounds so they would not suppurate. Since then, I have been learning anew who I am and mustering the strength to return. The samurai Yoshimitsu was a man used to closing his eyes, and suffered when he opened them. The monk Yoshi, however, keeps them open, and may he suffer should they ever close.” His smile becomes less bitter. “Arinaga-sama, seeing you here is a sign that my choice was the correct one. That I can yet be redeemed. I have returned to see things put to rights, O-Tora slain, his bandits driven off, and a blood member of the family back in control of the castle. It is meritorious for a noble wife to run the household, but not to usurp command of the garrison and keep it locked away in defiance of our duties. Yes, the peasants exist to serve the samurai class, but they are fulfilling a valuable role in doing so. Their lives have less purpose than samurai lives, but they still do have a purpose. Moreover, it is entirely unseemly for a mere yojimbo of a different Clan to act as if he rules Koumugi Castle.” He looks upward, as if he can almost see it. “How does Lord Toshiaki fare?”

You tell him, plainly, what happened.

He sighs heavily, “Oh my lord...the time spent deceiving you only added to your shock. If only you had been informed then. I had been led, we all had been led, to believe you had been. Lady Miho said he did not wish to be bothered with affairs outside the castle.” His one remaining hand forms a fist. “That castle and this valley are Lord Shirou's birthright. Arinaga Daisuke-sama, will you and your friend not aid me in delivering it to him?”

You smile, “We are here hunting O-Tora's men, it is already being done.”

He nods, “A mile down the road, I saw men hiding in the bushes. I came here away from them to meditate and prepare myself. I am committed, but I am but one old man with one arm. Five arms are better than two.”

“How many are there?” You ask.

Oh right, I forgot to mention and it needs to be said. You lose a small amount of honor for ambushing people, as a samurai. Sneaking around, as long as it isn't through another samurai's territory (these are your family lands) is not dishonorable, but ambushing someone will always cost you a bit of honor. It will reduce you from 6.0 to 5.7, in fact, a loss of 3 points (a point is 1/10 of a rank)

You'd think it'd depend on the enemy in question, but I can understand this. For what it's worth, my vote to sending Sayaka to speak to the monk was more out of worry that he'd play innocent of Daisuke was around.
>>
>>4641997
>[No, it is too dangerous to whoever acts as the bait, we will all three walk out and challenge them openly.

We need to keep them from running back to there master. If we face them 3 to 10 on the road it will be dangerous and risky. But at the same time they will all come at us together and will not run as they will be over confident. We just have to be ready for them and not over confident our selves. Or we will all be killed like fools.

As long as O-Tora does not know we are coming for him we can win. If he finds out he will try to crush us with numbers. We need to defeat all of these men on the road. As swiftly and surely as possible.
>>
>>4641997

>[No, it is too dangerous to whoever acts as the bait, we will all three walk out and challenge them openly.

Taking the honor hit here is worth it to get the drop on them. If we cut them all down, that's a substantial hit to their numbers, since Tetsu said that they had around 30 men. Knock off the two we cut down at the teahouse and 10 here, that's substantially better odds later, reducing it to 20 or less.

>[A fine plan...but one of us shall be the distraction]

I'm more inclined with this. He wont die guys trust me.

>>4642020
Isnt this option already over confident itself. They can still flee if the battle turns sour on their favor anyway so I dont get the logic of this plan. They might even have archers so we are undoubtably fucked if we dont use the advantage.
>>
>>4642011
Rather poor choice of capability. Since Daisuke is our sole competent ranged combatant. Furthermore, we're crab. Practicality comes first rather than full honour. We're not lions.

Rather we should be going full Damn Mongorians.
>>
>>4642037
We can take at least a few bandits solo, we're not going to die by the time the other two come into melee. I'm not saying we have the Armless man and the Scorpion girl pelt them with arrows, i'm saying they charge in once battle is started.
>>
>>4642037
We can always just walk up bow drawn and take a few shots into their stomachs to get their attention. And swap to our blade when they charge.
>>
>>4642041
>>4642061
And we should be ambushing them right off the start. A few arrows to thin the group or remove sentries before we charge in. Stack the deck as much as possible. This isnt the only group we're going against and we need to ensure we're in as good a form as possible when we face o-tora.
>>
>>4642061
That sounds just crazy enough to work. Lets do that. That should piss them off enough to get out of the treeline and on the road where Sayaka can run them down with her horse. And then it is all over but the crying for the poor bastards.
>>
>>4642064
>>4642037
There is pragmatism in honor - Better for the enemy to underestimate our guile and wit now, and then catch them in that mistake later, then to constantly riddle them with guerilla tactics now and force them into high-alert ultra-defensive mode later.
>>
>>4642072

It sounds like what they're suggesting, though, is to walk down the road, bow strung and arrow in hand, and when the bandits come out just start shooting at them. No honor loss from that, it's very direct. They aren't samurai, being archery targets is a fine fate for them.

Also, on the assumption that we go with this, start rolling dice and tell me whether you want Yoshi and Sayaka on the side of the road between the bandits and the watchtower, or one on each side. Both of them ambushing one group each, or two on the group more likely to run, essentially.

“A fine plan, only I will be the one to bait the trap. As for you two...” You make your plans, sending Sayaka and Yoshi off along the north side of the road. Your plan is simple. You will walk down the road. You know approximately where the bandits are, you will have your bow strung, and an arrow carried parallel to your forearm. While they are still waiting to ambush you, trying to deduce if you're alone, you will shoot at the first vaguely bandit-like silhouette you see. Your companions have strict instructions not to attack until you've begun shooting. If you're correct, some of them will have bows, and those will remain where they are, shooting at you, while the rest run at you. It should be easy shooting.

So you walk with confidence down the dusty track, bow over your shoulder, and a willow-leaf arrow in hand. Sure enough, the bandits are used to easy prey, and the first time you see a face pop out from the bushes to signal to his friends, you're a full two hundred and fifty feet away.

The arrow knows the way, and slices right through the bandit's ear with a loud hum, causing him to drop his bow in shock. With a roar of anger, six men come charging out of the bushes at you, weapons held high. Three from each side of the road. That means there are likely four archers, which is four more than you would like, but at the same time that makes this easier. A couple more arrows, and your friends will attack the archers. On the other hand, the archers are the ones who can hit you from here.

Dead archers can't shoot back. Loose one, and then draw katana to prepare for receiving the charge.
>>
>>4642167
>>[Continue shooting at the archers]
>>
>>4642185

With Iaijutsu 3, you get a Mastery which lets you draw a katana as a free action, so you can shoot up to the last minute. I did the math and assuming nothing else happens, it will take six turns on the part of the bandits for them to get within ten feet of you. On that round, with them ten feet away, you will have the option of firing another shot before they reach you, or dropping your yumi, drawing your katana, using a free action move to go forward ten feet and make a melee attack on the remaining bandits, activating your Rank 2 ability if you hit.
>>
>>4642193

Right on, thanks Wong. Probably shoot at the archer for another round or so, and then try to reduce the numbers that's bearing down on us. By then, Sayaka and Yoshi should have time to gank the archers and charge in at the others.while we're holding them off some.

Because Kimiko and Daisuke have very different attitudes in general despite both being bushi. Especially towards heimin. Daisuke very much isn't used to dealing with peasants who aren't ashigaru. Which is why, for example, he didn't do the normal thing upon entering the village, which is call for the headman and demand a place to sleep. Although there was a secondary reason I didn't remember to mention, which was that the teahouse woman had a reason not to rat the samurai out to O-Tora, while a headman might have feared the village would be endangered by harboring someone who killed O-Tora's men and run straight to the bandit leader in the night.
>>
>>4642167
>[Continue shooting at the archers]
>>
>>4642453
I guess it all just comes down to the fact that these peasants believe that crab samurai are truly out only to protect them from all evil forces. Ether the powers of the shadowlands or mundane bandits it does not matter. The crab protects all who live in the empire with there lives.

And O-Tora sounds like a real killer of a bandit what with him seeming to kill everyone his men find on the road. O-Tora has most likely ruined his reputation with his blood-thirst and brutality as a bandit. Rather than do the smart thing and get the peasants and ashigaru on his side. Then overthrow the samurai and take the land for himself. He seems content with just killing anyone he feels like and robbing the body's. O-Tora must only think with his brawn and not his brain at all as he is letting his one golden opportunity to gain real power slip thru his fingers because he is to big and stupid to find out that he even has one in the first place.
>>
>>4642453

>I dunno, that young master Arinaga is something else.
>Yeah, he went into the teahouse earlier, and next thing you know, two heads roll out into the street.
>Good on him, those beasts killed Sakura-chan's father last week. I hope they suffered.
>I heard from the castle that he stopped Nishiyama-sama from flogging a few of the ashigaru for letting him and his betrothed into the castle.
>Great Kami, I hope he doesn't wind up like Yori-sama, this old woman's heart couldn't take it to see him leave.

All the while, Daisuke's entire thought process so far is "Suffer not the bandit to live", "I wish I were back at the wall, ridding the land of the greenskin scum", and "Fuck you Peacuck, I ain't gonna listen to a two-pump chump who's scared of a man with an axe."

So let's see. The first guy you shot, you shoot him again, it doesn't quite kill him, but he's three wounds into Crippled (he gets +20 TN to all his actions, meaning he's not hitting you for shit and you can move on to the next guy. He's taken 29 wounds between that first shot that clipped his ear for 11 and this second one that hits the inside of his elbow for 18.

The second archer is shot in the heart and dies immediately. You hit him for a grand total of 40 wounds, killing him outright.

The third bandit you also hit for 29. As above, he is crippled. +20 TN to all rolls. Getting hurt sucks in this game, the "I have one hit point, I'm fine" thing really doesn't apply outside of maybe a few abilities I don't remember offhand.

The fourth bandit archer you hit for 25. As a note, you don't reroll 1s for anything but specifically attack rolls (not damage rolls) with a katana, currently. You have an Emphasis in Kenjutsu, your sword skill, for katana use. An emphasis is like a specialty that applies to that skill, and while attacks are technically skill rolls damage rolls are not. He's three wounds into Injured, giving him a +15 to all TNs.

Effectively, one archer is dead, two treat your Armor TN as 43, and the last one treats your Armor TN as 38.

You can fire two more shots before it's time to draw your katana.

Give me more 7d10s. If you roll above a 15 when adding up your best three dice, roll 6d10. Why 15 when earlier I said 10, and why 6d10 instead of 5d10? Maneuvers. Maneuvers let you do specific effects, in exchange for calling Raises. A Raise is when you voluntarily raise the Target Number of a roll by 5 in exchange for added efficacy upon success. The amount of Raises you can call on an individual roll is limited by your Void Ring, so since I'm giving you your exp now, 3. You are with each attack on these numerous but unarmored bandits using the Increased Damage maneuver, which costs one Raise for +1k0 damage.

Quick question before I start assigning damage. Assuming you hit a bandit enough to seriously hurt them but not remove them from the fight entirely (say +5 TN to +15 TN to their rolls), will you choose to...

You are almost surprised at them, for charging a man armed with a bow and arrow, easily two hundred and fifty feet away. It seems uncharacteristically brave, for a moment. Samurai will charge in that situation if required, but bandits? Truly? Has O-Tora actually given these walking mosquitoes spines? Then you realize the truth. These men are cowardly bullies. They are used to their prey being frightened and running from them. A running man cannot fire a yumi, they think they are safe and that they will, as a group, run you down and chop you to pieces with their motley collection of parangu and kamas. Machetes for chopping down bamboo, sickles for clearing brush. These are tools, not weapons.

They do not understand. You are a Hiruma vassal, a bushi trained to face far greater terrors. Their shouted threats are nothing compared to the primeval war-scream of goblins, or the coughing roar of an ogre. You inhale. You exhale. You draw your bow.

The man whose ear you clipped fumbles to pick his bow back up, so you shoot him again, this time in the meat of his bicep near the elbow. Four arrows come whizzing at you, and four arrows miss. You do not even have to move, three fall well short...the arrow of the man you shot barely escapes his bow by a couple of yards...while the forth forces you to actually sidestep a little.

You reward that particular archer with an arrow that strikes him right through the heart. He gurgles and collapses. Two archers remain on the side of the road you sent your allies along. One wounded one on the other side. All three of them draw back their bows and fire desperately at you. One lands well short of you, the other past you, but one scores your bicep with the very edge of its willow-leaf-shaped head, drawing a thin line of blood from you. A tiny scratch, not worth mentioning. If you had wavered and leaned more, it could have struck you in the arm properly and actually hindered your archery, but you are calm, one with the world. You nock a third arrow, and speed it into the belly of one of the archers. Although their reply shows they have a better sense of your range now, two of them are badly hurt, and all are badly shaken.

“Ha! He can't hit us, all of his shots are going high!” One of the charging bandits yells, laughing raggedly.

“New armor!” Another crows, “Maybe I'll get assigned to guard the hideout now!”

“That armor is mine!” A third snaps.

“We do lots for it!” A fourth argues, “You know the rules, and so do I!”

“Har!” A fifth one laughs, “Arrogant samurai. Your damned tyrant code won't let you run, eh? Good, stand there and be slaughtered!”

“This is what you deserve for thinking you're better than us!” A sixth one snarls, seeming to take the fact that you aren't running personally.

You snap off a fourth shot into the thigh of the only archer left uninjured. You could have focus-fired a little more, and killed at least two by now, but you are deliberately softening the archers up for your allies. Judging that you've given them enough time, and spotting Yoshi moving behind a tree, you shift your aim downward.

Two shots into the chest of the bandit who insulted bushido drop him to the ground, leaving you with five. They're ten feet away, adrenaline still carrying them forward, but it was a long run and they're starting to tire, looking a little winded and clearly wondering why you aren't running.

You toss your yumi gently onto the grass on the side of the road, as befits a weapon that has served you so well.

“Wait a moment, bastard! You think you get to surrender!?” One of the bandits bellows. His kama held high, he has no idea of the peril he is in.

Your left hand drops to your side, turns your katana outward, flicks the tsuba with its thumb to free the first inch or so of blade. After leisurely standing here shooting their friends, you are perfectly well rested, and they are utterly unprepared for your speed. Someone actually running towards them, especially after standing there so coolly, is the last thing they expect. You dash towards the man who just spoke, and slash just beneath his knee with your draw-strike, dropping him to the ground in paroxyms of agony. You move past him as he falls, turning on your heel to face your enemies again. You have their measure now. “My name is Arinaga Daisuke. You are not welcome on my family's lands.” You inform them. Even as you flick your sword through the air to clear the blood from it, they are turning towards you in a disorganized mass.

In your mind's eye, you see your sensei, his bokken whistling through the air at full strength to knock your wooden sword from your hand, striking your shoulder with enough force to knock you to the ground. “Stillness is death!” He bellows. “Your speed is what keeps you alive! Do not try to brute-force your defense. Move! Knock my blade aside if you must, but keep moving!”

You barely even see their clumsy attacks. These men are not trained warriors. They are thugs, any fights they have won are due to viciousness and willingness to stab another person, nothing more. You sidestep a parangu and with a casual draw-cut open the belly of a second bandit. He collapses to the ground, feebly trying to pull his intestines back in before he falls unconscious. Their short weapons swing and hack at you, but your longer sword effortlessly darts in at them, as casually as a crab picking plankton from among the rocks. You stab a third bandit in the side, casually backstepping from their blows.

You hear screams of dying men from behind you as your allies do their work, but despite the fear in the bandits' eyes it is beyond their comprehension that one man can stand against six. Well, four at this point. They cannot surround you, you are always one step ahead. The moment you scored a hit, it was proof that you understood how they fought, and from there the fight was already won. Like a one-man wolf pack, you dart in, strike, and move away...whether through, back, or to the side, unpredictable, yet always returning to harry your bloodied and weakened foes until they expose an opening and you put them down with a killing blow.

Four bandits (one of whom is wounded) becomes three as you spot one of those openings and strike out with a vicious overhead chop. The bandit in question throws his parangu up over his head, but your blow shatters the inferior steel and your blade digs into his skull. Not quite a killing blow, he slowed it down just enough, but it drops him nonetheless. Three bandits remain, one of whom is wounded. One tries to grab you, and you prick the point of his hand deeply with the tip of your blade as you dance among the sword-blows, turning and dropping the sole unwounded bandit to the ground with a diagonal slash across his torso that would have beheaded him if you were just a tiny bit luckier.

Of the two that remain, their attacks take on almost a crazed tone, trying to spread out and catch you between them, but the movement leaves them vulnerable. A swift horizontal blow at neck level, at the very end of your reach, beheads the bandit you stabbed, leaving only the one who said you thought you were better than him.

The answer is yes, by the way. He's a bandit who preys on the weak, you stand between the Empire and endless hordes of monsters. You are objectively better than him, not that it's something you dwell on. Especially not in battle. Still, he grips his parangu, staring you down with hate-filled eyes. A wordless scream erupts from him, and he charges. He swings his fist at your face, and drives the parangu up into your stomach. At the beginning of the fight, before you had his measure, it would surely have hit, but you know him now. As he stabs forward, your much longer blade stabs forward as well, underneath his sternum, up and out through his back. His machete falls from his lifeless hands as he slumps, and you kick him off your katana onto the ground, wiping the blade off on his clothes.

Sayaka and Yoshi are standing in the road, staring at you.

Sayaka sighs, placing a palm on her cheek and tilting her head to the side. “Put your tongue back in your mouth, Scorpion-san.” Yoshi informs her, rather sternly. He doesn't know her, you can't blame him for being protective around a Scorpion woman with their reputation, “I thought members of your Clan were supposed to be subtle?” Even though he is friendly towards her, he was once a Crab samurai, and the manners of a Crab still remain.

“I don't feel subtle right now.” She practically skips over to you, “Daisuke, let me see your arm, I'll make it better.”

“In a moment, Sayaka.” You smile at her despite the situation, and you see Yoshi's eyebrows raise fractionally. You take your sword, and you give the bandits the only mercy they deserve, freeing them back into the wheel of reincarnation. May their next life be more dignified, perhaps as a cockroach or a stinkbug.

“Do you have any paper?” You ask.

Yoshi looks puzzled, but nods, “I keep some spare in my scroll case. The abbot says that I should use it to record any deep thoughts I might have on my path to enlightenment. I believe it was a joke, he is rather a brutal man even in his humor.” He begins rummaging through his traveling pack, “Ah, where do I keep that brush...”

You scoop up a shard of the shattered parangu, accept the paper and writing utensils, and make your way over to the nearest tree. You do not stoop to touching the bodies of the dead after beheading them. If there were eta here, you would have them burned as a matter of procedure, but there appear to be none in the vicinity. Obviously. Besides, your flint and steel are not enough without signfiicant work and far more handling of dead flesh than is proper. Yoshi mutters a perfunctory prayer as you write your message on the paper, stick the bit of sharp metal through it to serve as a nail, and use a rock to hammer it into the tree trunk.

Because touching corpses is gross first of all. Second of all it's unclean.

Is it more acceptable if we bring it back as proof, along with O-Tora’s head and tiger skin? I kinda want to dump all three onto Takeshi’s table during dinner, right in front of the guards. Possibly INTO his dinner, as well.

Firstly carry heads is what peasants are for.
Secondly all the more reason for them to be a fitting gift for the cuckoo.

Dear GOD/GODS and/or anyone else who can HELP ME (e.g. MEMBERS OF SUPER-INTELLIGENT ALIEN CIVILIZATIONS):

The next time I wake up, please change my physical form to that of FINN MCMILLAN of SOUTH NEW BRIGHTON at 8 YEARS OLD (see attached image) and keep it that way FOREVER.

I am so sick of this chubby Asian man body!

Thank you!

- CHAUL JHIN KIM (a.k.a. A DESPERATE SOUL)
