Upon the start of the contest, Ace of the Bear Clan and 'Madaxe' Reginsson of the Wolf Clan immediately astound the judges with their impressive feats in the contests of strength and courage, respectively; Sloane and Thorval of the Wolf are given second honors in these tests. In the Flyting, the battle of words, Frode Gormsson of the Wolf did strive greatly with Roar of the Crow, but in the end the victory is awarded to Roar. The judges agree that, for coming first in Courage and second in all three contests, the Wolf Clan will be awarded the prize, and all present did drink from their cups to the honor of the Wolves.

As dawn's light touches the sky, your longships embark, and you go west over the waves. With good fate, you will return home a richer man; with bad, you will never return at all.

The gods must have been pleased with your gifts, for they grant swift wind for the sails, and strength in your arms to row. Day follows night, moon follows sun, and the sea flows ever onwards.

Soon you did gaze upon the white shores of the country of the Angles, those who had once worn the yoke of the Empire of Eagles and now worshipped the cross-bearer. England.

Landing upon the unguarded coast and disembarking from the ships, you look at the woods and valleys of this soft land, knowing that its riches will be yours for the taking. But first, there are preparations to be made.

(Campaign Phase 1 / 3)

Declare what task you will aid in at the landing site. On a 11+ result, you also gain the bonus from the 7-9 result.

>Roam Ahead

You know that somewhere nearby there are English to raid. Farming villages will have grain and livestock; townships will have tools and supplies, perhaps even rare goods; and best of all, the temples of the cross-bearer will have silver and gold. Go forth and take the lay of the land, find out where the English have settled, and mark their locations for the raid.

1-6: You are frightened and afraid in a strange land with a strange god. Lose 1 Will.
7-10: You discover an English settlement. Add 1 location to the campaign map.
11+: You also find a secluded path, perfect to hide your movements. Add +2 to your next campaign roll.

A wooden palisade will provide added protection for your ships and valuables, guarded by loyal thralls against anyone roaming the English countryside. Tents must be staked, cooking fires started, food foraged, weapons maintained. Every veteran warrior knows that preparation is key. Many a scrap's been won or lost because one man had hot food in his stomach and a good night's rest, and the other didn't.

1-6: You exhaust yourself or have a painful accident. Lose 1 Health.

The camp is well sited, secured, and provisioned. The gods are appeased. And the scouts have discovered four potential locations for raiding: a collection of farming villages; a temple of the cross-bearer; an old warrior's homestead; and best and richest of all, there is word of a walled town to the north, a hub for trade and commerce.

(Campaign Phase 2 / 3)


>Farming Villages

The nearby hamlets have grain, cheese, and livestock for the taking.

>Roll +Bold. +2 if you have Cleave or Shove.

1-6: The farmers have fled with their goods already, and will warn the lord of your presence. Lose 1 Initiative (this determines who will act first in the battle)
7-10: Gain 1 Food. The raiding party needs at least 3 Food, and this is your best chance to get it. More may provide benefits; less will be penalized.
11+: You pause in your ransacking to gorge yourself on fresh food and drink, feeling a surge of vitality. Gain 1 Strong token.
>Knight's Manor

An old knight and his retainers have holed up inside a manor estate full of valuables.

>Roll +Strong. +2 if you have Leader or Mobile.

1-6: Wounded in combat. Lose 1 Health.
7-10: Gain 1 Gold. The raiding party wants at least 10 Gold, although the third phase will let you add to this. More may provide benefits; less will be penalized.
11+: You learn something from skirmishing with the canny old knight. Gain 1 Wise token.


>Monastery

The unguarded temples of this land are ripe with plunder in gold and silver. What foolishness drives these foreigners to stockpile their valuables there, and what prevents these riches from being looted by their countrymen, you know not. Fear of their cross-bound god, perhaps.

>Roll +Wise. Add +2 if you have Bloodthirst or Savage Wound.

1-6: You fear divine punishment for your actions. Lose 1 Will.
7-10: Gain 1 Gold.
11+: You feel a sense of invulnerability from plundering the temple of a strange god and receiving no divine punishment. Gain 1 Bold token.


>Survey the Walled Town

A captured traveller claims the lord's town and keep lie to the north. That is where the true riches will be found. Once you've finished plundering these outlying settlements, it will be time to assault the town. Roar, Clark, and Thorval bravely lead the assault, scaling the wooden walls and assaulting the defenders before the alarmed watchmen can muster a proper defense. Once they open the gate from within, the other vikings flood through into the streets. The townsfolk scream and flee. They are of no matter -- find the gold!

Anyone offering resistance is butchered. Others are roughly shoved aside, and their valuables snatched away. Coffers, chests, and purses are emptied, stashes of wine and meat are gorged upon. Sloane coordinates the efforts in sacking the town as swiftly and effectively as possible. Bags are filled with coins, goblets, torcs, and bracelets. Not quite as much plunder as the raiders were hoping for. Not enough to make you rich. But close. It means more food and wood for the fire come winter for some time, if nothing else.

The escape is swift and well-organized, as the raiding band heads at first eastward towards the coast, then doubling back towards the edge of the woods. It would have evaded any pursuit from footbound enemies. But light cavalry skirmishers catch up to the vikings, harrying you with spears. The horsemen are brutally dispatched with the axe and spear, the others driven off, but not before they delay you long enough for the main English war party to catch up. Infantry, archers, and the infamous English heavy cavalry. The vikings still have time to choose their time and place to fight, though. "Further into the woods!" Lykil calls out. "We'll find good ground to defend there!"

A short distance through the trees, you find your good ground: a slow-moving river, choked with reeds and fallen leaves, and an open place between trees just wide enough to fit the warband. After depositing your plunder in a nearby hiding place and sharing out battle gear, you take up station on the other side of a slow-moving creek, forming a shield-wall with two wings. The veterans growl advice to youngsters, the devout pray to the gods in Asgard, the impatient pace and growl. Each fighter readies themselves for battle in their own way.

Now the English are here, red tabards and bright iron armor amidst the dark of the forest. And there will be battle.

The English spearmen are mostly unhardened youths -- they might wear sturdy chainmail and helms, but they clutch their spears and shields in white-knuckled hands, fearful to see the infamous vikings of the snowbound north in person. They appear to have a few veterans among their ranks bolstering their courage, one holding each wing against flank attacks, and a third behind the center, calling out orders and straightening out the shield-wall. A handful of archers take up station behind them. In the rear, a man with a trimmed beard and a circlet on his head sits in the center of a retinue of armored horsemen, banner-carrier at his side. They don't appear to be deigning to take part in the battle, at least for now. Maybe after you bloody a few of their lackeys here, they'll take the hint that you're not to be trifled with.

It seems an overwhelming force, but the gods have seen your people through worse before. You'll need to have faith in them, in your raid-brothers, and in your own sword-arm. The veterans are wounded badly but not downed, tough enough bastards to soldier on through an arrow to the ribs. The two on the flanks lead their men forward while the one in the center kicks and curses at the spearmen to keep the line dressed as they recoil from the flames of the firepots, beating wildly at their clothes to extinguish themselves.

Magda takes a wide berth and darts behind the formation of horses. She jeers at the knights while she manoeuvres around the noble-looking runt with a crown on his head.

As he looks around in fear at the wild Viking woman with bloodstained clothes and dripping axes that she wields in both her hands, he meets Magda's gaze.

"I am honoured that the last thing you will ever see, is me," she says as the rest of her band of Vikings hear crunching and screaming coming from behind the wall of Englishmen in glinting armour.

The survivors bind their wounds as best they can, retrieve the gold from its hiding place, and laboriously haul it all back to the ships. It takes so long to carry it all with just six people, that some start to worry another band of horsemen from the keep will show up. In the end, the longship, while difficult to push off the beach while laden with loot, launches before any further violence need be done.

Sailing back across the waves to their homeland, the vikings count their gains.
