You are Lucy, a witch stuck in unfortunate circumstances. As a person who has been tricked and scammed many times, you have grown to hate those types of people. Life isn't fair, and those who stab others in the back or bend the rules just to rise to the top bring out this anger in you. So when you're staring down one of the many individuals involved in this shitty situation responsible for the torment of one innocent lady you can only feel your grip tighten. Even her husband was responsible in it all, and that just makes the skeletal hands gripping this wretched fairy clench harder. Clenching until finally... Snap.

It wasn't even a conscious decision on your part, just your mind pushing to break the fae like a twig. Maybe this was the wrong decision. Out of all the involved people he was the least at fault. He was the one to call you here to rescue the girl as well, even if it was out of his own selfish interest to pretend to be her husband. For sure, you've done some bad things too, maybe some things even worse. It isn't the first time you've killed someone, though those times were out of self-defense... Was it hypocritical of you to kill him out of some sense of frontier justice? You could have just brought them in to be jailed somewhere.

'So what? You saw for yourself how much the locals here hate fairies. They said it to your face that they would even thank you if you made them all croak.' Still, does that make it... 'It's not hypocritical at all to do as you please. And even if you are, who are we to care for what others think of us? We should simply follow our desires and do as we please. Just like we decided today, right? Or did you abandon that ideal so easily? ' Well, there's truth to that, yeah... Elizabeth probably won't be happy with this though. Both the fact that you did this without telling her and the fact that this was all a waste of time. 'Yeah, but it's not like she needs to know that, right?' What, we should lie to her? What if she finds out? Burning away the goodwill between us doesn't sound smart at all. 'Don't worry about it. She's out cold from staying up and fighting so much today. By the times she's conscious we'll be long gone and can tell her we did a good job and it was all a happy ending. Even if she does find out the airhead will probably forgive you easy.' Why do things have to be so complicated...

As painful as it is to do so... You're going to have to tell the truth to her. 'You're going to regret that later. And probably in more ways than one.' Can't be helped. Her stupid earnestness is rubbing off on me and it just doesn't feel right to gaslight her that hard. 'Sure, sure, you make that bed.'

Regarding the issue of case clean up you do the only reasonable thing you can think of and bring the widow to the sheriff and explain the whole situation to him. Tom is surprisingly understanding about the whole affair, and while he's upset at the death of one of the townsfolk, he's not very torn up about it, at least outwardly. Doesn't care about the dead fae either. 'Told you it didn't matter.' He says he'll handle the aftermath with the poor lady, and hands you a bottle of some dark amber liquid along with his sympathy. Guess he really meant it when he said he'd buy you drinks. 'Maybe she'll take the news better if she's liquored up?'' When you mention your plans to stay in town for the night he even tosses in room fare, how kind. Maybe it's the lazy aura you get from him, but you sorta like the guy. You thank him for his generosity and take your leave, quickly finding a cozy looking Inn.

The fact that you're dragging your comatose friend behind you gets you some strange looks, but thankfully nothing comes from it even as you painstakingly drag her up the stairs. 'Sucks being the one to carry others doesn't it?' Shut it matchstick. The moment you slam your face into the sheets is one of true bliss. Finally a good rest, and the feeling of soft, fresh bedding is heavenly... Getting up to undress would be too much effort for how good you feel right now. You've already done so much running today so you just lay there with your eyes closed and breath in...

It's so dark and lonely here. That's fine though, you like it that way. You huddle in this cold dark corner as hollow figures walk by, ignoring you as you try to ignore them in turn. The little ball tightly held in your hands is far too precious to give up. It may just be pieces of garbage tied together and painted gold but it has meaning to you. So glittery and shiny even if it's useless besides its color in the end. You had other items of infinitely more significance but they were taken away by others. You even had someone to share them with, and another before that, but in time they were both taken as well.

So you sit here, huddled in a corner when out of your eye you spot another sparkle. It shines so brightly that you can't help but crawl from your hole and grasp at it, only for the dead hollow shapes to come out and try to steal this from you as well as what little you have. It makes you angry. These greedy things dare to take everything from you. Haven't they been satisfied by everything else they've already stolen? Can't they work for themselves instead of leeching off of your life? You hate them, so you lash out with your garbage and start smashing them apart with all your heart. Every smack breaks off a little bit of tacky painted off trash. It's only when you're in a pool of murky red goo that find yourself alone and secure with your rightful treasures. Your ball of garbage has been replaced a leg bone hot to the touch. Was it always buried inside there? It made it so easy to keep what was yours. Standing up besides the shiny pile of precious items you can finally see other distant treasures out there, guarded by vile hollow shells. Maybe you could take back what you've lost? With that thought you take the first steps forward in a long time, guided by the burning resentment you feel...

Agh!? You feel a throbbing dull pain in your head as you thrash around in your sheets. Another stupid dream and its made you fall face first off your bed. This is why you stopped sleeping in these damn things and just crawl into a pile of blankets on the floor. 'You're gonna screw up your back if you keep doing that you know.' My back is completely fine, its my skull I'm worrying about right now! Didn't even have to deal with these things before you came around. 'Correlation does not equal causation.' Excuses...

"Hmm... Oh, Lucy! Where are we?" And it looks like your fall woke up Elizabeth too. Wonderful.

"An Inn. I decided to not stay up for twenty-four hours and dragged you here so I could sleep."

Her eyes open up as she remembers the events of last night "Oh, so you took care of the aftermath all by yourself? Guess I really can rely on you, huh? Everything go okay?"

Ahahaha, this sucks. 'Go on, tell her the truth buddy.' Shut up! "Well, about that...."

-------------------------------------------------------

Over the course of your explanation her expression shifts from her usual blindly upbeat to surprised and then finally setting on a blank vacancy. "Oh..."

'She's not a happy camper now, that's for sure.' You are not helping! 'I'm just spitting the truth, and the truth hurts.' Agh!

Things going southward, must attempt to salvage! "Sorry. Should have waited for you to decide things..."

She quickly snaps out of her slump and waves her hands. "No, no, you did fine! About as well as you could be expected all alone. My fault for sleeping on the job! Besides this whole event was just unlucky. Should have expected something like this to happen every once in a while you know?"

She's actually taking this better than you thought she would. At least she's not blaming you for it. 'Told you she would forgive you even if she found out you were lying, right? You're the last person she would blame for a screwup on this job. What kind of a person do you think she is?' What's that supposed to mean? 'Not telling.' Stingy bastard. "Anyways, it's about time to get home right? A day out in the countryside air is nice and all but we're probably missed back there."

"Yeah you're right. At least we saved one person here, so this wasn't a total waste. Let's get going!" And she's forgotten about your precious sack of loot too. Now that you think about it, it's going to be an utter pain trying to exchange some of these gems and gold stuff into actual cash. 'you're complaining about having riches, how terrible.' You know what I mean.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The train ride is boring and uneventful to say the least. Even the usually talkative and nosey Elizabeth is quiet. Probably trying to find connections between completely unrelated things or something like that. You just busy yourself admiring your loot. Among the various valuables you find an ornate dagger. Despite how glitzy it is, the thing looks like it could still be used as a weapon. Might not even sell it off considering how nice it looks. 'Oh boy, are you gonna fight too now?' Don't count on it. You're still the heavy lifter. Rubies look very nice too considering your favorite color is red, and... Wait is that static? Yeah, you're definitely seeing static all around you. Is this what having a stroke is like? 'No you're most certainly not having a stroke. Something is going wrong here, and if you direct your eyes out the carriage window~...' Oh that's nice, there's a slight static haze and pixilation over the city... Wait, what the hell!?

Both of you stumble from your seats and are glued to the window gawking at the sight. It's like some old video with tracking issues or a corrupted game. You can still recognize the place, but the visual glitching is impossible to miss. As the train rapidly approaches the station you can even feel a fuzzy tingling on your skin.

"Not good, not good at all!" You hear your companion mumble and grab your hand, dragging you along in a sprint to get to the streets. Outside it's pretty much abandoned with no one walking about and all the doors closed up.

"So, what's going on here? They didn't call us back, and I think this is something that would count as an emergency."

Elizabeth pulls out her phone to check it, and then shows off a screen of useless static. "Probably because they couldn't. Agh, this is bad..."

'Could get worse. For instance, those nugget shaped friends over there.' Wait what are you- Oh that's disgusting... Ambling and gyrating their way towards you is a crowd of misshapen creations. Things that look like they used to be humans twisted into bizarre forms. Molded into mock animalistic shapes or sewn together, they all march together with wide smiles on every face they have both natural and unnatural. You can hear horrid music played on more things shaped into horns and drums playing themselves. "No time to get upset about it. We'll need to act instead." Ifrit pops up next to you ready for the fight. 'Never get a break do we?' Nope. You can hear that annoying belt jingle too as Elizabeth transforms. What are the others doing if something like this is happening? Regardless priority is probably protecting the other passengers that were in the train.

80 - Great success

Both of you set about dealing with these monsters in your own ways. Elizabeth can charge off like a madman as she always does, but you on the other hand can sit back while and observe while your familiar takes care of things. 'Dutiful as I always am.' And you'll get fed all the mana you need, especially if those things can't get close. Speaking of familiars, you're getting much better at synchronizing with Ifrit, especially after that brutal training session with the horrible spider lady. It's a strange feeling really, but not unpleasant strange. The more you synchronize the more anomaly like you become, your horns get bigger, you sprout little wings, and a thicker tail. Always wanted a bigger tail... It feels natural for some reason, like a limb you haven't used in a long time but always had.

Well regardless of all that stuff you definitely feel stronger when you do it, and Ifrit can definitely use the help while tearing through these flesh things. 'I'm quite happy I don't have the nerves to feel anything. This is disgusting.' A pseudo crocodile is torn into burning chunks and a horn player is broken in several places. Elzabeth is spazzing about with her sword like always making it annoying to track her so you don't really try. There's a lot of these things anyways, like... A lot. Where are they all coming from? If this keeps up the wave is gonna push past and start getting close to you. 'If you've got time to worry about those things, mind looking around for anything just incase?' Hmm, well there's nothing really notworthy relatively speaking on the ground. Maybe up above on the rooftops... Ah, yeah. There's someone up there. From what you can see it's a guy in a suit and he looks... Generic? That's all you can really call him right now because of the whole static thing-

OH JEEZ! spikes of bone spit up asphalt as they impact the ground next to you. Those freaks have ranged attacks! 'Oh grow a spine, it's not that scary.' Feh! 'They've just got a bone to pick with you is all.' Stop!

Whatever, they all burn the same. You raise up your hand and begin the process of searing away the horde. The problem is a lot of them don't seem to care at all about pain or damage so it takes more attacks than it should to kill even one. You're up to a score of twelve by the time you feel a rumbling from underground and the pavement gives way beneath you. There's a painful crushing sense sensation for the barest moment as a pair of mandibles close in on your torso. Thankfully your familiar quickly manifests right in time to pry them apart and save you from a horribly gruesome death. The offending horror beetle is quickly crushed and splattered across the ground.

Having your Skeletal companion forcibly withdrawn has the consequence of making the horde advance even closer. Uncomfortably so too. Sparky is still in her element it seems, still hacking and zapping away. From the east of the intersection you're stuck in you can hear slowly approaching gunfire. Like a lot of it, which is weird since these things obviously don't use guns. That fact is reminded to you by the second, more accurate volley of bone spurs clattering off your own protective skeleton. 'You're welcome.

94 - Excellent success

Making any moves here would probably mean exacerbating your current situation. Standing your ground on the other hand gives you the opportunity to bring your full force to bear on the monsters. With those two choices, you choose the latter. It might be the factor of the black bone armor forming over your skin as your transformation progresses pushing you towards that but you're feeling very confident about it even with the mounting odds. And so you raise your hand and set fire to the nearby abominations. Javelins of heat spear through a cartoonish looking meat bear, a quartet of jesters get shredded to leathery strips by the now quite demonic looking Ifrit, and overall carnage rages. So much so that you're actually stemming the tide to a halt.

This may also have to do with the ever approaching gunfire. One of those sources happens to be some girl in a filthy trench coat and gas mask flying lunging in at a wild pace with nothing but a revolver and oversized knife. Said revolver fires off rapidly with six shots, and six heads pop with unerring accuracy. She flips and rolls through the air spreading blood in a crazed spray out of a flurry of knife movements finally terminating as she ungracefully lands next to you. "HEYHOWSITGOINYOUAMONSTER?!?"

What?

"Uh?... No?..." You're completely taken aback by the new crazy person you're presented with. You would think you would get used to them by now but no, life keeps surprising you.

"THATSNICEYOULOOKLIKEONETHOUGHBUTTHATSFINEIGUESS" A mantis creature tries to slash her up as she's incoherently screaming at you, but her arm twitches and the offender's limb is completely severed before you can even blink. "PRETTYFUCKEDDAYHUH?"

You don't get the chance to even dignify a response as the big centerpiece of the nightmare parade shows its face. A bus sized centipede of meat, tip-tapping its way to your location with malicious intent. Today is not your day. It never is, is it?

56 - Minor failure

Okay, so following the line that your co-workers aren't of the soundest mind how badly can it go if you just try and cooperate with this girl? Sure she screams every sentence in an incomprehensible string of babble, but we all have our problems don't we? She might be the safest person to be next to all things considered. That's the logic you go by as you charge in and try to keep up with her frenzy.

Easier said than done though, she moves at a pace that's much faster than you're used to so all you can do is finish off the scraps in her wake. For every three that she puts down there's several more behind them that you can burn away. It's your first time trying claw to claw combat too although it's mostly out of necessity. Even your familiar can't cover every side so you need to clumsily fend them off with your new gauntlets. Just because they're yours doesn't mean you're good at using them sadly.

Things go a bit sideways when the massive centipede rears its hideous head. The psycho for her credit is eager to clamber all over it like hellish mosquito, jabbing away at its chitinous meaty hide, but mosquitos aren't known for their wounding capabilities. Centihorror shows no mind to her either but rather takes offense to you when a bolt of fire strikes off a leg. The jaws of it attempt to crush your comparatively tiny and delicious body however familiars and boney arms keep the maw of death from shutting. Sure does friggin' hurt though! Being repeatedly turned to a chew toy really puts life into perspective when you think about it. Perspectives that make you wonder why there's a sudden lack of electricity around here. Where did she go? That heavy gunfire is getting a lot louder though.

95 - Critical Success

The thing about having your main method of attack being eating people is the intimate relationship of mashing your face into your enemy chewing them up. That's a big commitment, and if one were to hold their jaws open and let loose a point blank attack... Well, it's probably safe to say this thing doesn't have to intelligence to comprehend that concept. With its mandibles wedged open all you need to is raise your hand and put out your strongest spell to end it. "Flare!"

Bright points of light compress and balloon outwards in seconds rippling explosions through the centipede's insides blowing off chunks in a final jerky death rattle that flings you away to sail through the air. The psycho catches you midflight though, and it's debatable whether that's a good thing. She smells about as you would expect, awful and bloody. "HAHAATHATWASGREATMINDIFIBORROW?KAYTHANKS." Wait, what? "FLARE."

In the short tumble downwards, an identical spree of blazing explosions pop all around, annihilating large swathes of the swarm in one movement. She just stole your move! Can you sue for this? Your attention is pulled away from your question as a sweeping stream of high caliber rounds mulches the remaining monsters in sight. Their source is a tall, heavily armored figure steadily marching on and brushing an oversized gatling gun in lazy arcs, obliterating the abominations with the same motions as a disgruntled janitor sweeping a hallway. In no time flat where there once was an innumerable force there's nothing but you and these two standing in a red mist. No Elizabeth though, where the hell did she go? Well you'll probably find out eventually, what's more pressing is these two. "Not that I'm unhappy about the help, but... Who are you guys?"

The tank of a person finishes her plodding walk up to you. Standing right next to you, you realize just how tall she is. Like, well above nine foot. "Keen and Phoebe. Upper district magical girls." You look at the other girl who seems to be much less interested in your existence now that the fighting is over and has begun fiddling with her many pockets looking for something. Is she pulling out syringes? "You're lower district, yes? I've heard that two of you were missing. Not a good time for that." She looks about at the mess of a street with mild enthusiasm."

"Long story... Anyways, mind filling me in on what the hell happened here?..."

You are Elizabeth Wyvern, a magical girl who is currently very determined to catch a certain individual you're chasing down right now. Lucy is in the middle of dealing with a problem of her own, but you trust her. She's tough, and besides those friendly looking characters will probably help. What has you fixated right now though is that very generic man who just so happened to be loitering on the rooftops, watching you fight it out. He must be behind all this. After everything you've done that he's been the source of it can't be anything else. It's only after about three blocks of rooftop chasing that mister goo here decides to stop in his tracks and turn about to face you.

"Sorry, but I don't like you for your looks. How about a friendly chat instead?" This guy loves to hear himself talk so it might be a good idea to get more information out of him. "Mind explaining what you're doing here?"

"Oh you know, just enjoying the show is all. Quite the spectacle wouldn't you say? You're not very punctual though, if this was my event I'd be disappointed at your lateness."

"Eh? What do you mean not your event?"

"Yep, funny thing is it wasn't me this time. I even had this big deal I was planning to spring soon but then all this popped up! It would be rude to try and shoehorn myself in after they went first so I'm taking it easy right now."

"Waiting in line politely? Are you kidding me? Is all you care about spectacle and theatrics or whatever?" The thought process of this guy is baffling.

He puts his hands in his pockets and starts kicking around a piece of rubble absently. "Well no, I've got a certain philosophy about my work. My own ideals to strive for and a goal I want to achieve. Having fun with it is very important I'll have you know." You somehow doubt that philosophy and ideals part. He just seems like a clown that wants to cause some chaos. "Huh. That's almost disappointingly simple and one dimensional. I kind of expected something more from you."

"Hey, don't go looking down on me just yet. I want all that bad stuff, but here's the thing. I don't want any of you folks to die or anything. Going a bit deeper might be revealing too much so I'll just leave you with that much. Just know that I'm fond of you all, it's a pleasure to watch you work and would be a shame to have that end. The fruit has to ripen first, and luckily stuff like all this is doing it for me."

He's not making any sense. "What does that even mean? So you're a sadist who doesn't like their victims to pass quickly? Not all that better to me. Disappointing ideals to work towards all the same."

"Not getting it?..." He ignores your question and sighs. "Are we done here? You're beginning to bore me. Usually you're more fun to be around." He turns around and begins to slowly walk towards the ledge.

To that you simply jolt forward, drawing your sword aiming a strong slash at the neck. He's agile, but you're still fast enough to slice up his cheap suit. He ducks low and you go for a stab but miss. A quick leap up from him leads to a kick to your back that stings and knocks you off balance a little but you're quick to recover.

"Ahaa, so you want to try it, huh? I think you're going in a bit over your head. I'm pretty forgiving too, even if you mangled this new shell." He feels up the oozing purple gash across his torso with a casual grin.

"Overconfidence is a big killer these days. I think you should take me a little more seriously buddy." Definitely not letting this guy go. Even if he talks a big game all he's done whenever you meet is run away after mouthing off. What's the worst he can do? Besides, you need to make up for how you screwed up with that last excursion...

94 - Great success

After your big step in you draw out your carbine and take the opposite approach, scooting away and firing off as many rounds as you can.

"Oh playing hard to get I see!" He laughs as he begins to chase after you. You're pleasantly surprised at how good you're getting at shooting, even while you're backpedaling around like this. Some may say you're on easy mode with the low recoil of the weapon, but it's still valid to you. The bullets rip through him one after another, but it doesn't seem to matter to him. They go in one side and out the other easy like you're shooting through water with nothing more than a little steam from the burns. "You go and bat at me like that and then start prodding at me like a mosquito! By the way, that phrase about overconfidence... I think you should rethink the situation. Double Time."

The figure you were once outpacing easily lurches forward at unreal speeds, easily closing the gap and maneuvering behind you. "Warp." Even before those words you take evasive movements and as you jolt away from his incantation the section of roof you were just standing distorts into a twisty shape that wouldn't look out of place in a modern art display. To bend concrete that easily isn't too reassuring for your ability to take even one of those in a glancing hit. "Now dance little underdog!"

Things take a drastic turn as he begins to return fire with his own spells. The only way you can even see his attacks is by the distortion in the hazy static cast over the place. Still you can take it in stride and score a hit for every miss of his, even if they mean pretty much nothing compared to a horrible injury if he even lands one. "Getting tired yet? I can do this all day~" His frail disguise has been worn away by the gunfire, revealing his amorphous geometric face.

92 - Great success?

Okay, can't let him keep doing this and guns aren't cutting it, so you need to actually cut it. As in, drawing your sword and dashing into melee with the guy. You start off great completely severing his outstretched arm. It doesn't phase him much besides making him whistle in reaction. Your further advances are stopped when his left arm transforms into a blade, blocking your strikes with a strangely hard edge. "There we go, that's more like it! No more of this fluttery nonsense."

"You're awfully smug for someone who can't even land a hit." The swordplay continues as you clash with him, and this is something that you've also gotten real good at. He can't do much besides defend and you're even adding in little cuts and jabs to his hole filled gelatinous body.

"You haven't seen anything yet, trust me! Gravity." He smiles and his newly regenerated right hand snaps its fingers. The feeling of a heavy force presses down on you and the effects on your fighting style are immediate. Usually you prefer to attack as wildly and loosely as possible to overwhelm your enemy, but even defending yourself now is a struggle. But still you're defending yourself all the same and somehow managing to keep from getting cut up. "Really though, pretty impressive I must say. Originally I thought that I'd turn you into a smear over the streets to motivate the others or something like that, but I think pushing you is a better idea. Double time." He speeds up yet again and the onslaught continues just as you continue to endure. The fact that he's for some reason encouraging you in a backhanded and roundabout way is exceedingly frustrating as well. Why is this guy so strong? You feel like you're at the top of your game but still struggling.

If this fails, we're really going to need to develop some hard counters for this man.

It's a real shame, but I imagine it can't be helped. Real life does get in the way at times. I do hope OP's doing well.

If this is to be the season finale, so be it. I do have mad respect for you MGQM. You didn't flake until the very end from low energy anons, and you deserve the credit and recognition that entails. I don't know if you are still checking up on this quest, but I'm planning on archiving this thread in case you ever want to come back and try a second season. Don't let life get you down, and I wish all of you that stuck around this quest the best.
