When last we left off you had been journeying through JARKA forest.

This place is enormous.
It has not much loot and far FAR too many kaprosuchuses. Kaprosuchi? Kaprosuchese?

Horse gators.

Still, it's got to be good for xp, right?

Main reason you're in this overgrown mess at several hours past lunchtime is because you're here to rinse and elder dwarf that has been terrorising people in the neighbouring forest.

Killing this dwarf is good for a LOT of reasons. But you gotta flush him out first and to do THAT you need to find and collapse the entrances to his tunnels. You've done two out of three.

For right RIGHT now you have found a runaway gopnik, Milosh.

Milosh ran away from home. Legally, he's an adult so he can't be FORCED to go home necessarily. he wants money babes and excitement but he doesn't want to do too much hard work or do anything remotely dangerous.

Milosh is kind of an assbucket. You're not sure if anyone can get through to him.

But, well...you're trying.

Mike glances skyward.

Burstock eats a banana.

Let's see if any of tgis appeals to him. "So far you've got yourself a good story that'll impress any girl you might have your eye on if you embellish a little. Think about it: You infiltrated a notorius bandit gang to work undercover to undermine it, kept cool under pressure, and your help was essential in freeing Scadam, leaving you the only gopnick to walk out alive. You brave the wilderness with a vengefull troll bandit hot on you trail, but you give him the slip. You fool local authorities to assist you and make way across the land in search of adventure. If you play your cards right, you'll be a folk hero on your own odyssey. Publishing rights to a novel series of your life story will make you mad bank and prestige."
>>
>>4756192
It occurs to me that if we can get through to Milosh, get him back home and enjoying his life, he might be able to help us out later if we want to sneak into that super rich people resort for that other bounty, being that he's apparently the heir to a big wealthy business. So while I'll admit my brain isn't working so good right now for coming up with ways to try and convince him to go home and enjoy his life, I do think it would be good if we can get through to him, beneficial for everryone both long and short term.

I'm just not sure how to do it.
>>
>>4756305
If we can distract Milosh we could mutterbottle up to Silver Lining and ask Karl for advice? If we leave Milosh alone in this place he is surely going to get himself killed and I don't think that's the kind of news Karl wants to tell his employers, the boys parents.

>>4756192
Milosh mentioned having Clear Grink. Does he have any left, or does he have any other potions on him? If he does, then if he is looking to make cash I think we'd buy.
In hindsight we should have brought many more potions for grinding.
>>
>>4756192
Outta curiosity, ask him what, if we just leave him here, his plan is going forward. Is he still gonna try and make it to Kerdil? Even before that, what's his plan for getting out of this forest alive with a rinkan that won't fly any more?

I'm hoping we can get him to reflect on his situation a bit, if he realises how fucked he is by himself then he might be a bit more amenable to recommendation.
>>
>>4756311
When we first met Karl I think he told us about his job trying to get this guy back home. I think if he had a way to convince him to get home, he'd have done so before they got split up. But it doesn't hurt to try. And maybe with some fresh eyes on this thread, several after that one, we might think of a way to apply what Karl knows.

So I guess that's a longwinded way of saying "Yeah I'm down for trying to see if we can get Karl on the line."
>>
>>4756192
Ask burstock to share his banana. Or better yet, get another banana for us
>>
>>4756253
>>4756423
These, ask him what his plan is first then offer him alternatives.
Though from his description thus far, he might be too picky to convince. If so, we should offer to escort him to wherever the hell he's going for the price of whatever potions he's got on him.
>>4756493
First thing we should ask Karl is if the guy was named Milosh. It's 90%, but confirmation never hurt.

Lay low until until fuckink troll is brought down by the vanguard or goes back fuckink home. Not going to be anywhere in this part of the mahala he can find me until then. Going to stay low and live in Kerdil until I know the coast is clear. Then head up to the big city and try my luck. Milosh needs to cut his own path.

See Milosh? You're a natural businessman! Maybe candles aren't a big, impressive industry, maybe it won't get women flocking to you. But with the profits a smart man like you would make, you could start up other businesses. Weapons manufacturing, whatever it is you think would get you the babes and fame. Candles might be what your family is known for now, but under your skilled management it doesn't have to be what you're known for going forwards.
>>
>>Oh, Milosh knows this. But who is ever going to believe? It's just going to be my burden.
If I read this right, he'd be down for money and fame from book deals, but knows he can't do it without proof.
If we can get him recognition for his 'efforts' from a well known and respected figure in the area, that might help make his story convincing. Baron for instance.
There already exist eye winesses that verify he was present in these places and events. He just needs something big to cap off at.

>>4757224
"You've given this some thought and have correctly surmised that masses can be disbelieving without proof."
Have Joey nod understandingly.
"You are in luck, Milosh. We might be able to get you the proof you need to for a life of wealth and fame in the world of adventuring literature. You interested?"

"If you want a consider your options that is fine. You probably already realize this is JARKA forest. Mike and Burstock here can give you directions how to get to Kerdil. Might take a minute or two. This place can be trecherous if you don't 'take your time'."
Wiggle you eyebrows at Mike and Burstock in hope they'll pick on your que to distract Milosh so we can call Karl.

"It's true my potential is limited - but parents only want to make candle. They are maybe 43 years old! Milosh going to be in late 60s before they die and leave him business. If I work in store to save money for own business - I still making candle! Sick of it!"

Burstock presses herself into Milosh's back and drapes and arm around him. Milosh's anger subsides, giving way to nebbish ,obvious attraction.

"That was the old you. You're a man of the world now, Milosh. You're a force to be reckoned with -what were you -third or forth in command of a gang - led by a troll?"

Milosh nods dumbly

Burstock grins at them
"I am sure - combined with their gratitude for having you back- that new found..."

Burstock faultlessly imitates a tremulous breath of genuine admiration

"...vigour you have will have you calling the shots in a business in no time."

Milosh self consciously fiddles with the hem of his tracksuit top
"Yes...that is true but...I still need to lay low for a bit until troll is out of the picture."

You fold your arms and nod, smiling thoughtfully.

>"If you want a consider your options that is fine. You probably already realize this is JARKA forest. Mike and Burstock here can give you directions how to get to Kerdil. Might take a minute or two. This place can be treacherous if you don't 'take your time'."

Burstock guides Milosh who is stumbling along with her to the corner of the clearing. A beaming Mike, who has poured 3 cups of something follows after and passes them around.
"Don't imagine I can teach this absolute bull much about survival but perhaps I can give you a few handy hints on ways to kick some ass without getting your hands dirty."

Milosh nods along and walks with them.

Burstock and Mike both look over their shoulders and nod at you.

Show thumb up Burstock and Mike in return. Great work.
Place a call to Karl. Tell him we got his guy, Milosh, down here in forest. Tell Karl what Milosh is planning and mention that we have history with the guy.
"I now fully understand the trouble he gave you, Karl. We got him to open up about what he wants and we might have an angle to convince him to go home back to his patents if we play this right. Should we give it a try? Is there any advice that could help?"
>>
>>4757669
Time to Mutterbottle up Karl. First off, ask him if the kid he was after was named Milosh, just to obtain certainty. Then tell him we found him, and Mike & Burstock are currently distracting him with flattery, but our attempts to convince him are stymied by his combo of arrogant and idiot. Should we keep trying, or is it all good if we just shove him in a safeish direction?

Also, I considered asking this guy to deliver a letter to our parents as he gets back to civilization, but he seems like he might be too dumb/rude to trust with that.

You surreptitiously get on the mutterbottle and breathe into it, as a way of making a call. It is answered by Lumsden, you ask if she can put you onto Karl. She says sure.

A few minutes later you hear Karl's dulcet authoritative voice.

"Karl here."

>First off, ask him if the kid he was after was named Milosh

"Milosh Cardigan, yeah. Why? Did you run into him?"

>Tell Karl what Milosh is planning and mention that we have history with the guy.

"You need a health pot after banging your head on a brick wall like that?"

>Mike & Burstock are currently distracting him with flattery, but our attempts to convince him are stymied by his combo of arrogant and idiot.

You hear the unmistakable snap of a lighter and Karl inhales slowly.

"That's him."

>Should we keep trying, or is it all good if we just shove him in a safeish direction?

Karl pauses
"Aren't you guys in Jarka? How did he get there?"
>>
>>4758072
I guess Milosh didn't tell Karl about what he's been doing.
tell Karl what we know. Tell him that Milosh was working for the bandit Edgewater when we ran in to him in Scadam. Credit where credit is due, at least he had enough sense or cowardice to not try fighting us. We paid him off and he gave us some intel before leaving. After meeting Karl in Scadam he was put on a bet-bet by guard sergeant to a nearby farm, from where he stole a rinkan with the intention of taking it to Kerdil. He picked the wrong forest to land in. He seems genuinely afraid of Edgewater and intends to stay put until the troll is dealt with.

Add that so far Burstock seems to have planted in his mind that instead of just working in his parent's candle store, he could start running it.
Besides running the store, might be convinced to settle back home with a book deal on his embellished story. He is lazy and egotistical enough that it could appeal to him.

>"Yeah, but be careful. We just managed to flatter him into being a bit cooperative."

"It'll spook him, but if I am wrong, I will stand to lose the most, I assure you."

You approach Milosh and the others with the mutterbottle.

"Milosh."

Milosh just about screams at the sound of Karl's voice. Looking around panicked and trying to move.

Mike and Murstock hold him in place. Milosh can't even struggle against Mike. Burstock whispers something in Milosh's ear. He breathes heavily a few times and then seems ready to listen.

"Milosh, I am glad you have a plan for your future. I've no doubt you'll bevery successful - no matter what you do. But, Milosh you've made a mistake here. Up until now, despite your criminal involvement you have always had deniablity. But now you've very clearly stolen a rinkan. Now, these Rinkan - no matter where they are from are ultimately the property of the local Vanguards."

Mike's brow furrows, but he says nothing.

"So you've messed with the vanguards property and, not to diminish the prowess of my associates here, if these three can find you the vanguards can."

Milosh goes pale.

"It's your first offence and you're a kid - but that's still a year of labour. So, like farm work out in the open. You're old boss will be able to find you - and you'll have ankle weights on so you won't be able to run."

Milosh gasps back a small yelp

"I'm here to help, Milosh. You lay low till that Rinkan has rested. Fly it back to the farm you stole it from. Then Milosh?"

Milosh eventually manages
"Yes..?"

"Go home and be a family man. I'll talk to my friends on the force and no one will ever have to know about your little joy ride."

Milosh goes limp
"I...yes..okay.."

there is a pause.

"Good kid. Don't worry your parents, now."

Milosh nods
"Is better"

Burstock and Mike release Milosh. Who looks very scared but resolute.

"Can't be king shit if I'm dead or in jail. Milosh gotta be smart for now."

"Stay out of trouble."
>>
>>4760500
Make sure Karl is done talking before putting away the mutterbottle.
>"Can't be king shit if I'm dead or in jail. Milosh gotta be smart for now."
Nod. Tell Milosh that that's a good attitude to take.

"We must press on with our own job, so this is where we have to say goodbye, Milosh. One last chance to fleece us on any mana or health potions you might have if you've changed your mind."

You hear a familiar voice.

"Hey, pal Joey? I know you're kicking tuchus out there, but please come back in one piece. I miss you , Joe."

Milosh readies himself as Mike and Burstock release him. Mike hands Milosh a small dagger and a single percussion pistol.

"I'd stay hidden if I were you. But if it comes to it."

Milosh nods

Burstock places her hands on her hips and shifts her weight to her other foot.

"Be a good boy."

Milosh blushes a little but smiles. He goes back to the previous screen, a better gopnik.

Awright. Once we blow this, he'll be coming soon. Luckily, Joey has a plan!

MIKE drinks GRINK RAK
JOEY drinks GRINK RED, (But not a mana potion so long as mana>= 36)
Remove all but one bullets from pistol
Top off party health and Burstock’s mana
Round 1: unmodified KNEECAP, rerolling if needed. HH on Mike, who uses BLACK SHELL BREAKER to degrade it's armor. Burstock SMITES. damage: 350+
Round 2: HH on Mike, Mike uses HELL'S HEART SMOKE AND MURDER, Mike uses grink rak bonus action for PIN DOWN. Joey drinks a mana pot, Burstock SMITES. damage: 1410+
Round 3: speedload dwarfstoppers, HELL'S HEART HAMMER TIME, damage: 2010+

If all that doesn't kill it, we'll need to run.
>>
>>4763362
>GRINK RED
is that a normal Grink, or what?

>If all that doesn't kill it, we'll need to run.
and come back with Highball, who can one-shot him with Guillotine unless we did less than half of his total health.
>>
>>4763332
Neat.
Mike said that once we collapse the last tunnel, the dwarf will be on us in two screens, three at most. We can use this time to prepare, such as move to a better location, throw down caltrops, set traps and whatnot.
Have Mike listen up so we know what is around us.
Mutterbottle Silver Lining to let them know we are about collapse the last dwarf tunnel to flush out our bounty.
>>4763362
Do you mean Grink Cherry when you refer to Grink Red?
I'd rather save the reroll for Hammertime. If we miss the Kneecap, Burstock can cast Bodily Betrayal instead. She can't keep casting it next round, but it has worked on dwarves in past.
Otherwise seems like a fine plan.
>>
>>4763384
>She can't keep casting it next round
she can, it'll just cost more
>>
>>4763380
>>4763384
I mean the Grink that gives +15 init and +10 damage in exchange for making us smell or something for an hour afterwards. And I put the reroll on kneecap because I don't know whether ELDER dwarfs will have some extra resistance to bodily betrayal or something, and because I kinda doubt it'll survive to round 3.
>>
>>4763398
If we fail HH Hammertime, we shoot one bullet, but we lose mana equal to what we'd lose if we shot the entire cylinder. Missing HH Hammer Time would be utterly devastating to us to the point that taking a hit from the Dwarf on one turn would be preferable.
>>
>>4763362
Careful about PIN DOWN. As we've learned from the Harpy, it doesn't stop ranged attacks, if he has any. The other dwarf didn't, but...
>>
>>4763417
True. Alright, we save the reroll for round 3, and Burtstock BODILY BETRAYALS in round 1 IF the kneecap fails; otherwise, SMITE.
>>4763398
Looking it up, yeah, I meant Cherry Grink for Joey. +10 damage on EVERY attack is best for Joey, since Mike generally makes fewer, stronger attacks.
>>
>>4763362
Holy shit, I didn't realise we could put out that much punishment. Pretty fuckin good
>>
>>4763485
technically, we could do more. Imagine if Mike had his full points, Joey could drink a Grink Rak too and they could both use their extra actions for yet another HHS&M, right after the first
>>
If I recall correctly, we should be at full mana. I'd suggest for a combat plan, we go with >>4763362 's suggestion with some changes.
We drop HH Hammertime right out the gate. This will leave us with one point of mana, but we get most out of our mana potion that we drink after. We can then follow up with Mikes Smoke and Murder next round.

Before we start, lets have Mike listen and call our ship like >>4763384 suggested.
Also ask Mike and Burstock if there is anything they wish to prepare ahead of time.

>>4763516
But then our heavy damage abilities will have to pierce its armor. I wanted to frontload the armor-breaking effect of Black Shell BREAKER, so HH Smoke & Murder and especially HH Hammer Time won't be reduced by armor. We can wrack ourselves a bit then Health pot, so we can cast the HH for the first two rounds, but this way we save a mana pot and do max damage.

Anyway, let's learn to stop worrying, and love the bomb; blow that tunnel.
>>
>>4763619
Wouldn't the dwarfstoppers negate the dwarf's armor anyways, tho?
>>

>>
>>4763450
It can probably throw something at us but I doubt it will have anything particularly damaging.
>>4763384
Anyway we can set up a simple log trap here before we blow the hole here? then we can build one in the next screen and just give it the ol rpg shuffle till he spawns on one of the loaded tiles.
>>
>>4763662
Probably, but this is an Elder Dwarf, caked in the hardened rust and rock of eons. It can't hurt to put down the armor-weakening first, especially since HELL'S HEART HAMMERTIME is our most taxing ability, and not the only source of damage in this fight.

>>

Not particularly? It seems like the dwarf might just shrug it off. I doubt even hours of work with dirt and logs could create something that hurts more than a round of bullets.

>>4764113
hey, free damage is free damage. maybe we could spice it up a bit with some of our extra dynamite.

Anything that takes time and effort isn't free. That said, we should have 7 dynamite left after we blow this hole, so setting something up with that isn't a bad idea.

Too bad we don't have fire spells.

I would have suggested burying the sticks of dynamite and leaving rather obvious marks we could lure the dwarf over and then set them off.

You collapse the last tunnel, as your ears stop ringing , you feel the ground beneath you shake.

Far away, although not as far as you would like you hear a long, furious bellow half way a between a crumbling cliff and a furious walrus, it makes loose leaves fall and scatters clusters of birds and anything else that can fly screaming into the night sky. So many it casts shadows over your party.

Then it goes quiet.

Mike looks around. His expression neutral save for what you think is just a hint of excitement.
"That did it."

You nod and take inventory:

Revolver (6 normal bullets)

Speedloader (6 normal bullets)

Speedloader (6 dwarfstoppers)

Speedloader (6 trollstoppers)

16bullets

3 Large Health potions

2 Mana potion

1 Burnsauce

Ravenbar

Mutterbottle

2 Books of Matches

Grink Rak

Grink Cherry

Grink

5 cloudjars

2 boomflasks

5350 Gold

As you check your gear, you talk to Mike.

>Mike, go ahead and load your Dwarf Busters-(Is that a good name for them, Dwarf Busters?)- so they're ready to go at the start of the battle.

"Boss shells."

>Can we ask Mike if Elder dwarfs have higher resistances than normal dwarves? I'd rather be done with the speculation.

Mike clicks his breaker closed.

"It's possible. I don't know."

He looks up at you, his smile still small but definite.

"Never fought one. Normal Dwarf got armour of 50. Dwarfstopper punches through 70. I doubt it's that high."

>Also ask Mike and Burstock if there is anything they wish to prepare ahead of time.

Burstock winces, pulls out a large flask of bright orange liquid chugs it down. She seems to find it disgusting.

"Just that."

>>

I think the plan was to offer the Rak to Mike, yes?
>>
>>4764376

>>
>>4765428
>Leave one normal bullet in the cylinder (for kneecap)
we decided to HHHammertime first, so don't do this
>>
I'd not a strats guy, so I'll support whatever everyone else comes up with.
>>
>>4765436
Then we won't be able to HH mikes breaker first turn, which means we can only HH one thing next turn, and he won't be able to PIN DOWN. It's less efficient, and puts our biggest expense up front rather than leaving it for if the other stuff doesn't work.
>>
>>4765463
He can PIN DOWN on the first turn, it's the same thing. It won't do damage so it'll last just a turn, but chances are it wouldn't end up doing any either way, the Boss shells wouldn't strip that much armor out of him.
>>
>>4765472
It still means we're spending our biggest hit to resources immediately, rather than as a coup de grace if necessary. And HH Mikes BREAKER first acts as a damage boost to all subsequent attacks, including his smoke and murder. Why play our biggest card right away when it's more effective and synergistic to wait?
>>
>>4765525
>>4765463
I'm in favor of this. There's no reason not to be cautious and handle this as efficiently as possible.
>>
>>4765525
>>4765578
Eh, sure. Then don't load the dwarfstoppers at all, keep them in their speedloader. That way when we load them, it'll be all 6.
>>
>>4765525
I don't think we can cast HH on others if we also take an action same round.
I don't recall us being able to do so in the past.
I think we'd have to forego Kneecap on first round if we want to HH Mike's attack and drinking mana potion on the second fore the same reason.

Also can't we let Mike act before we do in a round?
We could let Mike use his breaker to strip off armor, follow that with regular Hammer Time with a cylinder with normal bullets and then free action speed load dwarf stoppers for the next proper HH Hammer Time?
Or heck, if Mikes black shells are truly effective, speed load normal bullets to save the dwarf stoppers for later Hammer Times.

I think that Mike at least should deploy some caltrops towards where he can hear the dwarf coming from. Costs us nothing to do so and is armor piercing.
>>
>>4765592
HH in RAW "allows one extra action or spell", without specifying that it needs to apply to that action or spell. I assumed that means we can act, and HH someone elses action, on the same turn. Oh, we should tell Mike and Burstock what we're planning, so they aren't caught off guard or anything.
>>
>>4765629
Where can I find the RAW for future reference? Only mentions on HH I can find are the first post of thread and the wiki and I can't find mentions of extra actions, only doubling damage.
>>
>>4765629
Every single time we've used HH, it's always worked this way: if we use it on ourselves, it goes at the same time as another action, if we use it on someone else, it takes our whole action.

Right, so, new plan. We keep the same pre-battle buffs. First round: HH Boss Breaker, Bodily Betrayal. Second round: HH Smoke and Murder, extra action Pin Down, Smite. Third round: Mana Potion, Karubin, Bodily Betrayal. Fourth round: Dwarfstopper HHHammertime, Smite, Pin Down (if necessary, at this point). If it's still alive by this time, we play it by ear or run away. Sounds good?
>>
>>4765772
fifth round: kneecap, cloudjar, GTFO
>>
>>4765772
Sounds good to me, but let me run a thing by you all in case it makes sense more than just myself.

On third round after using HH twice, we still have 53 mana out 85. That's a quite a bit to down a mana potion on to just get 32 back. Here is my suggestion:
We remove two normal bullets from the revolver ahead of time, do a HH Hammer time on round three and push drinking the mana potion on fourth round where we continue your suggested sequence.
We have enough mana to fire the four remaining bullets with HH, and thus have made most out our resources with a very low risk addition to the plan.
>>
Also regardless what variation of >>4765772 plan we do, the dwarf will have at most gone once and only if it wins initiative. I really don't think running away the moment our initial plan reaches it's completion is warranted.
>>
>>4765783
Well, as written HH Hammer time always takes 84MP, but CF might allow that. The question is, do Mike's points and Burstock's MP allow that extension?

>>4765788
Well, the problem is that this works only as long as Mike still has points and Burstock has MP, otherwise we only have a 55% chance of stopping it. In the highly hypothetical situation of it surviving that long, our best bet is getting back to the airship and changing our team for a fresh one.
>>
>>4765791
>our best bet is getting back to the airship
Is it though? Firstly, the usual cloud jar gambit won't work on dwarves, since they don't use eye sight to hunt.
Secondly we'd have to make it back to the entrance where the ship won't be attacked by harpies while being chased by the dwarf that does at least 50 damage to each party member per screen just by charging through.
We can make a break for the ship after the plan has run it's course. I'm just putting out there that it might not be as smooth escape as one might think.
>>
While I can certainly appreciate the benefits of planning our strategy turns in advance, I would like to remind folks that the decisions we need to make will be impacted by what the enemy does and the damage we take. Planning three or more turns in advance seems like it's open to the problem of whatever we come up with being obsolete due to the actual game state at that time.

Perhaps it would be best to come up with our first turn's actions and see what happens before planning for turns two and onward?
>>
>>4765791
>Well, as written HH Hammer time always takes 84MP, but CF might allow that. The question is, do Mike's points and Burstock's MP allow that extension?

I checked last thread since I recalled this happening there and it did. We forgot to reload since last combat and did HH Hammer Time on some goblins, only firing two bullets. Without drinking mana potions we continued to cast magic without issue in the following combat.

I only have a question for CF: What are the mechanics of running from a fight and coming back for it? Will the damage inflicted on the dwarf remain? Will the tunnels remain collapsed? Will the defeated mobs remain dead?

Actually, can we just ask Mike and Burstock if we can afford to run from a fight without being set back?

For right now, you and Mike drink a grink cherry and a grink rak respectively. You've never had grink cherry before. Why is it called grink cherry? It tastes like marzipan. It's way fizzier than others, too.

Mike chokes down the Grink Rak and looks around.

Alright. We have effectively extra round.
Since emptying the cylinder is a free action along with speed loading, can Joey cover four out of six chambers with his free hand and empty the two uncovered chambers as a free action?
According to wiki HH Hammer Time increases in cost for each bullet fired and only firing all six costs 84.
If we do HH Hammer time with four bullets, we can do 360 damage after Mike's armor reduction, which is almost as much as Mike's Smoke and Murder.

I'm sorry. I can't call us to drink a mana potion with this much mana still left. Someone else has to do it.

Mike fires another arrow as Burstock continues to call down lightning. She looks a little exhilarated.

Almost getting your gun caught in your holster, you step foward an unload a barrage of HELLS HEART HAMMERTIME into the dwarf once more. Lightning crackles all around it as the SMITE continues and Mikes KARUBIN finds purchase in the great beast's eye.

The elder dwarf lets out a horrible, distorted growl almost like powering down machinery and after several centuries of absolute madness and terror, finally keels over and breathes its last.

Mike slings his rifle as he walks up. He holds a holds a fist up to you.

Burstock slumps her shoulders and does a big smile as she wipes sweat from herself.

"Well, that wasn't such a chore now, was it?"
Mike shoots her a look

Despite her jokes, even Burstock is breathing hard.

All three of you laugh a little.

You got him.

You fist bump Mike who smiles. Mike wanders over to the still smouldering dwarf and unsheathes a particularly sharp looking knife.

>"Woof, I can't wait to get back to the ship. After that I need a shower and to wash the taste of grink and mana potion out of my mouth. Those boss breakers were great, though. And I didn't know smite could do that."

Burstock leans on a nearby tree.
"Yeah, me neither."
Burstock casually vomits up a couple of pints of blood.
She winces and then heals herself.

She drinks a mana potion then spits more blood out.

Mike turns to her, but she holds up a hand. She's fine.
"Iron Brew."

Mike nods sympathetically then returns to his work.

>Then we should get to helping him harvest.

Mike smiles good naturedly at you.
"Naw man, I got this and it's...kinda precision work."

You see that in addition to the large knife he has, Mike is also using a series of smaller ones and what look almost like lino cutting tools to harvest bone shavings.

All the innards are dark, with rainbow glimmers to them when the light catches them. It's very hard to tell what is what.

So as to not keep you waiting, he also slits open the dwarves stomach and begins setting aside what hasn't been digested.

YOU LOOT:
84 gold
2 wedding bands
silver ingot
large pearl
2 pyrite nuggets

Burstock rinses out her mouth with some gin and glances skyward.

"We're just going back to the entrance, right?"

Mike hisses with pain and momentarily stops working.

Burstock heals him.

Mike nods and thanks her
"Fucking grink rak.."

With some effort, you dislodge the pickaxe from the dwarfs skull. It bends and breaks in the process. It's worthless as a pickaxe now, but a nice bit of proof.

You throw and catch the wrecked pickaxe to yourself when something occurs to you.

Burstock casts heal on herself again.

"Not quite illegal. But controlled potion. Horrifyingly sweet. But it raises your armour by 30 for two combats. Problem is, it's got a five hour debuff that periodically really hurts you. Can't just heal it out either. Gotta ride out the whole debuff."

Mike fills sets aside two jars of white shavings and begins another.
"In the end, you didn't need it either. You alright?"

Burstock nods and winks
"Always. And it was worth it to make sure you guys had a healer in case you needed it. Better safe than sorry against something that dangerous"

Mike smiles fondly
"First time?"

Burstock takes a swig of gin.
"Nah. But it has been a while."

I agree with this. Either increased mana or a discount to the cost of casting spells would be good. If we have enough points for multiple things, maybe up our gunslinging abilities some more? And heck, if I'm making a wishlist might as well add practicing/learning some better communication/negotiation. You know, for when we need to convince another Gopnik to leave the life of crime behind, or get a good deal selling out potions or whatnot. Maybe Karl'd be able to help with that?

"I have to admit. I underestimated how much of a fight this place put up. There is still quite a bit left to explore, but we are out of resources to do so without taking unnecessary risks. Could have made use of more potions, more boomflasks and more ammo."
Inspect revolver while you are at it. We put a lot of lead through the barrel and unless we maintain it it will start to wear quickly.

Do we need to meet up with communities in Jarka forest to collect our bounty, or is the bounty bar in Kretch holding it for collection?

Our main combat skills are gunslinging and magic, so upgrading those makes sense. Maybe Mike could teach us how to handload cartridges, or something. >Inspect revolver while you are at it. We put a lot of lead through the barrel and unless we maintain it it will start to wear quickly.
You flick open the maintenance kit that Mike gave you and set about your revolver with small screwdrivers and brushes like Mike showed you. It's kinda soothing, honestly. Something occurs to you:

>"Do we need to meet up with communities in Jarka forest to collect our bounty, or is the bounty bar in Kretch holding it for collection"

"Doesn't that hurt?"

Level up options?! Sweet. My personal preferences would be:
More versatile Gun Tech- Hammertime and Kneecap are great, but specialty rounds are expensive, and tough single targets were giving us trouble.
More Mana- We've got a nice selection of spells (even if we keep forgetting to use DOUSE), but we burn through mana real fast. (this might be something we can deal with through clothes, rather than level-up)
And Smoother Tongue- We are running a business, and we have a habit of starting conversations even in unlikely circumstances. Better conversational skills would go a long way to smoothing things out for us.

Though we do need to buy more bullets. The anon a couple threads back who suggested just buying crates worth of normal bullets might have had the right idea.
>>

>>potions as a free action
>Oh man you guys.
Yeah, no, right behind you. That one goes in the upgrade list and I'm not budging on it.
Improving HH is also one we don't want to miss out on.
As for the others: we can get more mana by wearing robes instead of armor, and we can get healing by downing a potion (making the free action potion even more invaluable) and we happen to know someone who owns a potion company, and they even have a Vitamagus on payroll. Oh wait, that's us.
The killshot... I dunno, I need to know just how not easy is "won't be easy". We already have Hammer Time for a "whole buncha damage on a percentile chance" action already, after all.

You take the rope ladder back aboard the Silver Lining. You opt to take a nice long shower. Rinsing your mouth several times and trying to sweat out the sickly smell coming from you. It takes a bit.

As you get out of the shower, you find your clothes have been washed and pressed as usual. Much better.

You do what the hope is the last of your cherry grink burping as you walk back to your room. There is a plate of lamb koftas and some slaw waiting for you. It's still warm and there's even a cold brew there to go with it.

You didn't even realise how hungry you were. Within moments you have a cleaned plate and an empty glass. Feels great.

YOU LEVEL UP!!

You have 4 level up slots that you can fill before bed!

Some of the basics!

Highball can train you in melee and social
Mike can train you in firearms and survival
Burstock can train you in magic, mana and vortexing potions

You can look at the teamwork poster to gain one extra part member slot for three outings

It's powerful but long term doesnt do anything

EXCEPT

It's like adding more chances for two party members to figure out a TEAM ATTACK move.

But this can also happen by them spending more time together and becoming better friends.
>>
>>4770947
Can those extra party member slots be saved? Say we want to take a trip to Kiani forest again, but take only two party members with Joey instead of the three we could take. Would this spend the amount of outings we can take three members on?
>>
>>4770957
Yup. It's in any order between now and the next time you level up.

Make no mistake, that's a while away. Like, just a some grinding and killing edgewater wont make you ding again.
>>
>>4770965
Yikes. Is there a way to permanently increase our party size? Spending multiple level up slots or something?
>>
>>4770965
Thanks. That'll help us decide I think.
We'll want a third party member when we take on Edgewater and the other times we can use to venture somewhere more dangerous, like the Crags. That improved action economy is a huge advantage along with more options for team attacks.
We also need to become a better negotiator for when we start cutting deals, better prices and discounts. We'll most likely need this when we finally find Eccard Hilbosh. We'll want to see Highball about that.
Using potions as a free action seems like a fine choice, as does increasing our maximum mana.
I don't think learning new attacks is warranted. We saw in this very thread we can already do massive amounts of damage if it's needed. Improving our accuracy with these special attacks I think would be a good idea though that way we can use them more consistently without less chance of failure. Our current chance to hit with Kneecap and Hammer Time are only slightly better than a coin toss.

In summary, my suggestion for level up:
-Extra party member
-Improving social skills
-Improving mana or potions
-Improving accuracy
>>
>>4771025
Not exactly.
>>
>>4771033
I understand wanting extra party members against Edgewater, but I also feel that a level up that gets us a temporary buff is a level up wasted. It's powerful, but it's hamstringing us in the long run. Also, Burstock said something about bettering spells and I have it on good authority that it includes improving Hell's Heart, which is our most used spell by far, so we REALLY want that.
>>
>>4771307
Team attacks that can be gained from bigger teams are still permanent. Also there are things that are resistant and outright immune to magic, including trolls specifically. Our best moves will be ineffective against Edgewater so having that extra teammate is going to be needed. I also brought up that with extra team mate we can adventure in more dangerous areas, gather funds, treasure and equipment that we could not get with a smaller team without taking massive risks. Extra team mate opens up so many more opportunities than just what can be done in combat its not even funny.
>>
>>4771359
It's still just a temporary thing that is lost long term, and the combos can be unlocked otherwise. We won't get level ups all that often anymore, so we need to start thinking long term or we'll cripple ourselves. Also I think Hell's Heart works on the target of the spell, not the target of the attack, so it's probably gonna be critical against magic resistant enemies.
>>
>>4771033
>>4771359
I'd rather not go with the larger team size myself. It's temporary, and it's only permanent benefit is the possibility of team attacks, which can be gained without it. I'd rather go for something more tangible.
My personal ideas on what we need are:
-Burstock's free action potions (ups the utility of potions immediately, and will only scale to greater utility as we gain power and larger Mana/HP pools)
-Mike's gun tech (Hammer Time and Kneecap are excellent indeed, but we have serious trouble with armored/high HP targets)
-Highball's social skills (Some of our best results have been from diplomacy and negotiation. Excellent out of combat, and even in combat we have a habit of striking up unlikely conversations)

Honestly, I think those are our areas of strength, and sharpening them up more is the best option for ever-better power. If it were up to me I'd just do those, and double up on one, but I understand if folks want to diversify a bit in the fourth slot. Maybe buff up melee or stealth, get ourselves a holdout option. Outside of level-up slots though, next time we're in Dunnlivin we should hit up the thread shop for wizards robes (nice ones, with the bonus to max MP), and buy a couple (dozen) boxes of bullets.
>>
>>4771369
>>4771380
When asked from Dr. Ash about weaknesses of trolls, he specifically mentioned they need to be brought down with raw damage alone, charging attacks with magic are not going to work.
Extra team mate will always be better than anything we can get from a level up for Joey. Team mates bring more actions, more abilities, more choices. Unless you want Joey to start going solo there is no way to be crippled with team mates.

You also ignore the additional adventuring opportunities. Ask yourself: would we ever consider venturing to the Crags with only two team mates after learning what's there? What improvement from level up would make you feel strong enough to do so?

>>4771380
>-Mike's gun tech (Hammer Time and Kneecap are excellent indeed, but we have serious trouble with armored/high HP targets)
In this very thread we dealt with one of these. The solution is dwarfstoppers and other ammo types and boomflasks.

Joey doesn't have to do everything. That is what others can do. We can never do as much with melee as we already do with our revolver because of the choices we made. I don't see the benefit being at best average in everything when what we should do is improve our strengths.
>>
>>4771380
>-Mike's gun tech (Hammer Time and Kneecap are excellent indeed, but we have serious trouble with armored/high HP targets)
We did well enough, tho. Dwarfstoppers were good, we just need to pack more of those.
I do agree on the potions and the social skills, but I also have to insist that we should look into what Burstock can do for Hell's Heart, because I think that's gonna be something we don't wanna miss.
>>
>>4771380
>>4771390
>>4771391
Generally speaking, are we locked in with heading to HB for social and Burstock for potion chugging? It might be an idea to get started on those, and then maybe we can ask people what their thoughts are on level up stuff while we're there, see if they have any insights or recommendations.

For my money, I would say buffing Hell's Heart is a good plan - even though it won't work on Edgewater, it'll work on the goons we'll have to crawl through on the way there and probably most everyone else we'll face in the future. It's far and away our best and most used combat spell, so I'd say it's definitely in our interest to buff it somehow.
>>
>>4771415
I'd say we seem to have a consensus, but I still want to have all the options on the table before making any permanent choices. Also give some time to people in other timezones to weigh in.
>>
>>4771390
>>4771391
True, specialty ammunition and explosives go a long way. But they're expensive, and we can't always afford to spend them on every enemy with armor or multi-hundred HP. Joey's already good with his revolver, I just want him to be even better. Hammer time and Kneecap are both excellent, but a once-a-combat killshot for MASSIVE DAMAGE would be excellent, as would something like the ability to handload specialty ammo/explosives ourselves rather than having to buy them. I think Joey's main strengths are Talking, Gunslinging, and (general-purpose) Magic, and it makes sense to me to sharpen those rather than getting our melee, unarmed, or specialty magic up from bad to merely adequate.
>would we ever consider venturing to the Crags with only two team mates after learning what's there? What improvement from level up would make you feel strong enough to do so?
Yes, I would. As for what we'd need, a trained thanomagus. Bring an adventurer thanomagus and Richter, along with enough HP and Mana potions to keep us afloat, and that'd be perfect.
>>
>>4771415
Yeah, seeing HB about social skills and Burstock about potions are good for me.

I'd like extra team mate for no other reason than social interaction with Joey and each other. Its a delight when we have discussions with them about current situation when on mission.

Okay, I might be able figure this out.

Because you have the TEAMWORK poster, I will just have it that ONCE PER LEVEL. You can take an extra party member for one dungeon.

As you naturally level up as a boss, you may get to do it more times per level.

ALSO: As you level up your relationship with Highball, you will eventually get the 'inseparable' buff which means she doesn't take up a slot on the load out. That's a bit away, yet but it's there.

So for right now, you have one charge on takin out 3 party members instead of 2 for this level.

And you still have 4 upgrade slots.

How's that sound?
>>
>>4771454
Sounds good for me. Only downside I can see is that we'll have to leave longer between particularly spicy dungeons if we wanna bring an extra party member, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Makes sure we're up to them by the time we get there.

>>4772092
Agreed. I consider sharpening our gun techniques or learning new ones absolutely critical, frankly. Hammertime and Kneecap are excellent, but extremely expensive and of limited damage, respectively. Learning a technique to get more damage out of our gun will be invaluable if we encounter more Kaprochuses or other enemies in a similar vein. So far, we seem to have a consensus on Free potions and Highball's social skills, but we need a nice high-damage ability of our own to HH, in the same sort of arena as Mike's BREAKER or something. I could take or leave improving our HH itself, but if people want to then hey.
>>
>>4772098
Look at this guy. Smooth as butter on a baby's buttcheek.
>>
>>4772080
Richter in strength if we're gonna go for higher caliber, harder hitting bullets.
Richter in athletics if we're gonna go for speed/trick gun techniques.
>>
>>4772168
Gun technique is gun technique. Training i ahtletics will mean not everyone can out run you, and you could learn to dodge or jump higher or something .
>>
>>4772114
I really don't like the idea of getting another shooting technique with a chance to hit that amounts to a coinflip. Is it really wise to get something new that the old thing can do already just fine? What we need is better chance to roll under the target percentile and master what we already have. HH applies to everything. Might as well improve it instead getting something new that might not even land on target.
As for expensive ammo, the solution is getting more money and doing that doesn't take a level up slot. Getting harder hitting ammo is also solved with money. We want to double our damage? Let's buy another revolver for our off hand. With money.

Not to influence the outcome, but for what it is worth, that there is some goblin thinking.
>>
>>4772223
But our existing techniques DON'T do it just fine. Kneecap is a stunner, and Hammer Time is excellent at damage, but extremely expensive. We could rely on specialty ammo in order to deal high single-target damage, but then anything like a Kaprochus will end up being a net expense to fight. Having a high-damage single attack will make us just plain better, it synergizes better with HH, and it'll let us deal with kaprochuses or armored foes easier. You can't make money if you need a constant supply of expensive specialty ammo.
>>
>>4772219
Technique isn't useful if you can't handle the weapon.

Bigger caliber rounds need a stronger hand, wrist, and forearm to shoot while nimble, dexterous hands and fingers are needed for quick-draw and faster shooting.
>>
>>4772237
We used 360g for those six shots of dwarfstoppers to bring that dwarf down. Literal pennies compared to the 5000 we scored with this bounty. We fought 6 Kaprochu in this forest and if we had Hammer Timed with dwarfstoppers each and everyone of them they would have have died at a rate of about one Kaprochu per round with the help of Mike and Burstock. That's without using HH.
In total, we would have spent 2520g on dwarfstoppers. Only half what we gained from the bounty alone, not to mention the savings we'd had made with from unspent potions, boomflasks and Mike's action points. We don't even know how much we get from the harvested bonemeal in the end product potions.

Special ammo is not as expensive you make it out to be. However I don't think we can see eye to eye on this, so I say we leave it for others to make that call. If people really want get yet another technique, then that's fine. Heck, Maybe Mike can help us improve Kneecap to do more damage or something. I just don't think it necessary.
>>
>>4772251
Why are you arguing with the actual QM?
>>
>>4772267
I'm cool with anything as long as the 4th skill is used on something fun and learned from one of the company staff.

LUMSDEN - Take a spin on the whirlybird and try our hand on learning to fly an airship
SURREY - Better potion making
JONES - Scrounging for wild ingredients in a pinch when out adventuring for a quick meal
GILCREST - Insert learnable skill here. Seriously though, Custodian's do know the best way to make a scene clean, for the in-between, and notice things out-of-the-ordinary.
KARL - Already mentioned, more specifically, lockpicking

I guess, as QM, I would encourage you to explore each option and talk to your crew. Take their training if you like the sound of it.
>>
>>4772223
I agree, but I also see the appeal of building towards chance. We may have experienced the ire of the dice gods, but so have we experienced their favor as well. The bigger the risk, the bigger the thrill, the bigger the win if we manage to make the roll of destiny! Save or die. Make the save, and become a legend. Fail, and die like a bitch. Are those not the most stimulating and thrilling throes of the dice you've ever made?

At least, that's one angle. Minimizing risks and random chance by extension is also a way to play... but I also feel it to be... a wee bit boring wouldn't you say? It's such a predictable and foreseeable "playstyle" from the GM's perspective as well. Better to take the "random" option now and again I'd say. Throw the GM off, channel a wee bit of Old Man Henderson or the like. Unless he's a railroading PoS he'll embrace the randomness as you have and see it as a challenge to "sell" those dice rolls to everyone.

Point is, sometimes embracing Chaos is a good thing. Total predictability isn't a thing the likes of us ought to seek if we want to remain engaged as utterly as we are now.

I get what you're saying, at least to some degree.

I have done what I can, within the limits of being an illustrated quest to give people a world to explore the way they see fit. There are limits, but those can produce creativity.

I think both giving yourself a better chance with your current skills and developing new ones both have merit.

Learning to fly an airship or mix potions is probably not useful to you but who knows?

Its gonna be a bit before I can get to my computer to update properly. I feel like some options, most of you agree on.

I should say, regarding doing big damage.

A dwarfstopper round is pen50 dmg100
A trollstopper round is pen20 dmg400

HH increase the damage but not the pen, but with kneecap pen is ignored anyways.

I hope this helps.

Let's put aside all fights for a bit please. We can't please everyone, but we can try to please most.

Anyways! Freshly washed and fed, you make a b-line for Highball's new room and let yourself in.

Highball squeaks and rolls sideways off her bed. Her head pops up from the side, beaming and blushing.

"Doughty Joey! Sorry, I figured I had more time! Nice to see you!"

You see her shimmy a bit behind the bed before coming out to greet you. She almost skips.

"Pretty classy of you coming to see me first, Joe. I woulda forgiven you for wanting to do some levelling first."

Highballs puts her arms behind her back and wiggles her shoulders sheepishly.

"Not that it ain't flattering."

QM: Looks like we're going CHA up.

This is a solid choice. It doesnt unlock unique dialogue options or give damage bonuses, like the others but it will raise ALL your charm and friendship based speech checks by quite a bit.

It will make you carry yourself better and more likely to perform cool little tricks. If that sounds good, I will lock it in when I get home.

I think we need to talk with Mike and Burstock to get a better picture what our options are.

On an unrelated matter, we need to start thinking about our next moves. Talk with Surrey what other ingredients she needs, collect reward for bounty, pick up Jorn, attend Dr. Ash's lecture about slimes and every other god forsaken abomination, replenish equipment and consumables.
I believe the ork smith in Scadam promised a discount. I imagine she could supply us with regular bullets in bulk.

It's great! The characters are super fun just to talk to. Gilchrest, Mike, and now Karl are all bro-tier, Lumsden and Burstock are just nice and comfortable to talk to, and Highball is of course best girl/top gob.
>>4774492
Good thinking, agreed. In more mid-to-long term planning, is our next target Edgewater, the Malkies/Old Guard, another Bounty? I'd like to head back to Joonda, pick up our old things and all, but it seems prudent to delay that until anyone with a grudge against us is dead. If we go fuck up the Old Guard, we'll need a fair bit of prep, and a plan for getting close without getting shot/zapped, but they'll have a bunch of armaments we can loot, including dedicated anti-troll guns and such, which'll be aces for killing Edgewater.
>>
>>4774466
I was going to suggest doubling up on Social/CHA before I knew there were multiple options. I'd gladly vote for Lady Killer as well

You give her a fond smile
>"You have a baseline level of cool I just aspire to."

Highball smiles back
"I dunno if I can make you *goblin* smooth, Joey"
She rubs her arms as though she was washing

"But...let's see what I got."

Highball begins to pace around you
"Walk with your shoulders back, upright but not military. Stride, don't strut and miss me with some sort of CEO power walk. Keep your expression neutral, not unfriendly. Look like you're thinking at least a little bit. Doesn't matter if you're thinking about titties or icecream - don't look vacant."

She grips your developing bicep fondly
"Self awareness is everything. Focus on your strengths and work with them. Own your short comings and laugh at yourself but don't make self deprecation a character trait people associate with you. It's blood in the water for some people."

She stops walking and does some hand talking.
"Don't talk down your virtues. If you're handsome, you're handsome. If you're slim you're slim, if you're a good shot you're a good shot. If you deny it- then you'll be making those who have even less of what you have feel bad. Don't do that."

She begins to start walking again but stops, something occurs to her.
"There are somethings, a person should never declare about themselves. Being a badass, being funny, being a king a chad or having big dick energy. The compliments MUST be paid to you. If you make these boasts yourself - even if any or all of them are true- people will always think the opposite. A kings crown is earned, not snatched at."

She continues to pace
"Save shouting for battle. If you're having a discussion - keep it smooth. Smile and look some one in the eye when they try to insult you. If they're not getting your point, volume ain't gonna help. They're dipshits, not deaf."

Highball is twirling your revolver. You never even felt her take it.
"Acquire little skills and be aware of your surroundings. Carry a light even if you don't smoke. If someone's patting their pockets for more than seven seconds, help them out. If you're heading to the bar - grab your pals some. Don't argue over the details when you split the bill. Put in more than you paid. Don't keep repeating a joke and don't try to riff on someone else's joke or funny story beyond an absolute gold one liner. "

"Think of life as smoking a stogie. Let it rest in your mouth. Don't stare at in when you light it, don't cough, don't lick the sides of it because you heard once that's what experts do to make it burn longer. Rest it, light it up smooth and enjoy."

Highball clicks open your revolver, she throws six bullets into the air and pulls the revolver through them, perfectly reloading it, she clicks it closed and hands it back to you, winking.

"Always play it cool"

He will also be romancable in the inevitable goblin dating sim I make.

At some point (doesn't need to be right now) it would be a good idea to figure out how much those dwarf bones are worth; we spent a lot of money on this expedition and the bounty covers only half of it, if memory serves.
>>
>>4776968
They worth a bit indeed just as ingredients.

However, you harvested them because they improve the distance/clarity/lifespan of mutterbottles, a product you are currently making.

The manufacture of high end mutterbottles, at least with appropriate marketing and business acumen will prove more profitable than just selling dwarf bones. At least in the long term.
>>
>>4776968
IIRC the anon who calculated the cost at being ~half the bounty was going on a hypothetical for if we'd bought a ton of dwarfstoppers to use in basically every encounter. I don't think we actually spent that much prepping for this quest.

Not saying getting more munz from the ingredients we harvested is a bad thing, just pointing out that I think our profit margins even without them are pretty good. Though also, we were gonna use the dwarf bones/marrow as potion ingredients to make our products more better, which I think would be a better use than selling them raw. Would need to hear from CF what the sell price is, then find out how much enhanced product sells for, then math out which is better.

Wow, it really *is* a good thing we're gonna have an accountant on the team soon! :D I can't wait for us to start doing spreadsheets!

>"So many things in here. Would you show me around HB?"

She plays up a goblin accent
"Why soitainly"

Highball walks in a clockwise circle.
"There are tables around with stools and what not, so this is a good place for a bit of a chat and a good option for having some chow."

Highball collects to frosty draught beers from the standing bar and hands you one. You, Highball, Burstock and Mike all clink glasses. It's good stuff. A nice amber ale.

"Standing bar here. Amber ale on one tap, porter on the other. Bunch of liquor, too. It's got everything I could think of except orgeat syrup, so I guess I can't fix you a completely accurate maitai."

You slurp your beer. You'll live, you think.

"Dartboard of course. For those of use who use thrown weapons. Not bad for a friendly game, either. You'll notice a few potted plants around. Miniaturised trees with full sized fruits! Orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit."

Highball pats a gumball machine.
"In as gratis. Its got a coin slot but it only gives one ball a day. The flavour on these things only last about 15 seconds or one round of combat but, who knows? Might do something.'

Highball points up
"Disco Ball. Another thing that'll get people dancing, especially if the tunes are good. People dancing together is good for them - might make them better friends or even work better together."

She pats a strange machine and puts a gold in.
"This will really help! This is a jukebard. Its got a little book of songs in it that you can pick through. It uses dozens of jars of MAYONOISE recordings of bard performances that it pipes through horns when you pick one."

"Put on something orkish!"

Higjhball makes a selection. this is some high quality sound!

"Oh man! I know this one!"

Mike starts nodding along and grooves a bit. Him and Burstock sets down their beers and do some basic dancing, with Mike even mouthing along to the words.

"This creepy booth here is some sort of gold arcade machine. Its on free play. Once a day the....plastic? Maybe? Skeleton will write you a fortune and give some advice. I dunno how it works and I ain't finding out."

Highball glances at the poster.
"No idea who this chick is - can't make out the sig but I kinda wanna use her tuchus as a pillow. Guess the baron threw it in. It's classy, no?"

Highball runs her hands along the pool table.
"The sport of the hustle. This is a good thing for folks that oughtta click better and do some good shit in combat even if they never get along well enough to dance."

"Maybe you could practice ricochets with it!"
"Ha! Sure!"

Highball turns back to you, beaming.
"Main thing is, everything in this joint will keep people just a bit happier. On a long journey, it's real good to have a place you can unwind."

You select something from the 'BEAST' section.

The initial sound that emanates from the machine is like nothing you've heard before. It's like some sort of horn or the lowing of some sort of animal, but it picks up into guitar, but played differently.

It's definitely ternion races making the music, but there is an aggression and fierceness to the sound. The singing is almost yelling.

Highball really gets into it, thrashing to it, flicking her hair and doing backflips.

Mike initially covers his ears, kinda shocked but begins to nod along to it.
"Huh. That's different. Not bad. I kinda dig the fierceness"

Burstock smiles as she tops up Mike's beer
"It's a sound that's not really catching on the cities. Speaks volumes that the baron even has samples of it."

"Is it illegal?"

Burstock walks out from behind the bar and begins to shimmy a little
"Nah. But it's thought of as trouble and it's not popular. Lotta folks don't like it."

She dances over to Mike and hip bumps him
"wanna dance"

Mike blushes, finishes his beer and dances with her. For someone usually so relaxed looking Burstock has an incredibly thrashy way of dancing.

The four of you put your weight on it and get into the song. The vibe is good. Highball finishes the song with a powerslide. Against all odds Burstock remains decent through all the intense movement, but is admittedly cutting it close. Mike does a heart laugh. You're not sure he's ever danced with friends before - it seems very novel to him.

Burstock returns to behind the bar, winces and spits out a large chunk of bloody viscera into a wine spitoon. Mike pats her on the back and makes sure she's alright. She seems casual about it and goes back to talking to Mike.

Mid conversation Burstock pops the cap off a beer and swirls the liquid inside it, draining it in seconds, Mike does a small applause and Burstuck does it two or three times more.

"Wonder if I should learn that.."
Burstock shrugs
"It'd have limited applications, but you never know."

Highball bumps against you

>"Well, now we know what she looks like whenever we get around to selling that gem."

"Yeah, we should feel her up if we're ever on the central band."

You walk over to Burstock, as Highball invites Mike to a game of pool. She eagerly straightens out a 50g note at him. Mike sets down his drink and agrees.

Burstock downs another beer as you put an elbow on the counter.
>"I don't want to interrupt or anything, but could you teach me that trick? Be great with potions and all."

"Oh sure. The swirl is easy, the trick is opening your throat up so you dont justgargle foam all over yourself."

Burstock bench opens a 40 ounce.
"This larger bottle will allow you to see the technique better."
Burstock swirls the beer into a vortex with both hands as she drinks it, draining the bottle in about 3 seconds or less.
She wipes her mouth and hands you a bottle.

You grab the beer and swirl it like she showed you. You gag a little as foam squirts from the sides of your mouth.

>"PFAGH!"

Burstock leans over the bar and dabs at you mouth with a napkin.
"Almost had it! You're a natural. Try again."

SHe slides you another beer and once again you swirl it. You get zen about it. You clear you mind. Don't think. Drink!

You exhale triumphantly, you beer drained in seconds. Burstock does a small applause and pats you on the back.
"Eeeey nice one, college boy! Now in combat you'll be able to slam back potions as a free action. Just make sure you don't lose track. SHit can get expensive."

Burstocks eyes make a cracking noise and her sclera turn entirely red. She rubs her eyes with her thumb and forefinger and they have returned to normal.

You both turn towards a whooping noise. Highball has potted her first ball and it looks like she's on stripes. Mike has a competitive smirk on his face.

Burrstock leans on her hand, gazing at them both slightly dreamily.

She rest her head in her hands and does a small smile.

>"Where are you and Mike at? You guys boning or...?"

There is a clatter behind you as Mike misses his shot. There is small cheer from Highball
Burstock supresses a laugh.
"Aheh. Not quite. Done some pretty serious fooling around though. Dude keeps worrying whenever he has a passive role, like he should always be doing something for me back. I'll help him relax."

>"How am I doing as a boss?"
"I'm not sure. Only ever run a one person business. People seem happy, though. That's good. Lotta businesses forget how important that is for a business running well."

> "I want to expand my mana pool - is that a thing?"
Burstock nods as she finishes a shot of something amber coloured
"Yup. Pretty simple too. You aint gonna get much done each time, but we can eventually get you up to 100. The other 20 comes from robes in my case."

>"You mentioned something before about the range of my spells, know a way to make Hell's Heart better?"

I'd like to peruse our other options, but improving HH is fine by me if we choose to use our level up on that later.

>For now let's go spectate the game between Mike and HB. I'd like to ask HB what she thinks about our encounter with the old guard. They seemed to expect some kind of pass phrase, but our guess didn't land at the time.

You spectate the game for a while as Burstock goes back to her shots.

Highball sinks one of the solids, giving Mike 2 shots.
Mike chalks his cue.

"Hope that was a genuine mistake not pity, Nep. I'm just getting started."

Highball takes a sip of dubonnet on the rocks and smirks.
"You've read the pamphlets they pace out, Shen. Goblins *have* no pity."

"Hard to read them while they're kindling my fire."

They chuckle as Mike sets up his first shot. You approach Highball an tell her about the Old Guard you met in the forest. She nods as you explain how it went down.

"Sounds like that one was open and shut. Left no witnesses or anything. Every member of the Old Guards who has laid eyes on you has got their ticket punched, so that's good. All they know is that their delivery is late. They *will* be looking for an airship, although we're not the only one - there's not that many."

Highball bites her lip
"And depending on how much Chesapeake told them - they MIGHT know to look for me. Maybe."

Mike pots three balls with one shot.

Highball lets out a very goblinish "OoH!"
>>
>>4785805

OHkay. So it's like how Mike taught us gun techniques, with the level of difficulty/ease of those techniques determined by how we rolled during the training. Only it's Hell's Heart, and instead of difficulty it's mana drain.

No problem.

In summary, duel casting HH will always cost 40.

Casting on others while taking a full other action will cost between 16 and 26. I said plus 2 earlier when I meant -2. Sorry.

HH training will grant both.

Anyways! Who else you wanna talk to?

The game doesnt take much longer. Highball only has one stripe left to sink but Mike is done with everything except the black, which he casually pots.

Not opting for a handshake, Mike and Highball bow to each other. They smile fondly and commit to a rematch as Mike pockets a dandy 200.

Reading the room, Burstock invites Highball over to the jukebard to make a selection they put on something modern and human and dance to it, giving you and Mike a chance to chat.

Mike goes back to his ale.

"What's on your mind, bud?"

Don't know about Mike's moves, but first aid is probably a safe bet. Can never have too many healing options.

For us
>3. I'd like to learn a new gun technique! One that [INSERT OWN]
Give us that killshot

Do we have 2 level ups left or just 1? If 2 then
>1. Teach me stealth. That way if its a team of me, you and HB we can ALL sneak. It just seems useful.
>>
>>4788193
>>B. I'd like you to poison your blade and your caltrops
>>C. I'd like you to use more caltrops (lasts 5 turns)
These are pretty good. Caltrops suddenly become battlefield control. Combine with a Cloudjar and the enemy is kinda fucked. Even better if we add burnsauce.

I'd like to add a small analysis of the others, tho:
>A. Think you can learn to reload faster with that rifle?
This is solid, and I would've gone with this before B if we couldn't use this by spending AP the following turn.
>D. When you fire a normal arrow, aim for a weak spot (normal arrows ignore armour)
Not bad, but upgraded caltrops should be able to fill the same niche.
>E. I'd like flaming arrows to be an option
I'd like to see how different these are from a boomflask.
>F. I'd like you to learn how to chug potions
It's not something that came up much last time, and he's not a wizard so it doesn't have as much usefulness for him. Still, not really a bad option, but there are better ones.
>G. I'd like you to practice your first aid
We own a potion company that has a Vitamagus on payroll. To choose this is to decrease Mike's usefulness in exchange for something we already have in abundance.
>H. I understand Orks have developed vocal chords. I'd like you to learn some mimicry.
Not bad, but situational.
>I. I have a fever. And the only solution is more boomflasks.
I'm not sure what this option does. Boomflasks that cost 0 AP? Two boomflasks at once? Free-action boomflasks? All of those would be solid, I guess.
>>
>>4788193
>B. I'd like you to poison your blade and your caltrops
>H. I understand Orks have developed vocal chords. I'd like you to learn some mimicry.

>2. I'd like to improve my chances with an existing gun technique.
HAMMER TIME
>>
>>4788193
>>1. Teach me stealth. That way if its a team of me, you and HB we can ALL sneak. It just seems useful.
Sounds nice, but we'd have to be in that specific party for it to work, and I feel most of the time we'd want just one or the other. Still, not really a bad option, but it kinda feels like spreading ourselves too thin.
>>2. I'd like to improve my chances with an existing gun technique.
This feels solid, depending on how much the improvement is.
>>3. I'd like to learn a new gun technique! One that [INSERT OWN]
One that doesn't depend on a die roll would be nice. I'd rather avoid yet another coinflip technique.
>>4. I need to train my senses (small, but permanent INT bonus)
Not bad, but I dunno if it's playing to our strengths.

All in all, I still want that HH upgrade, but I wouldn't mind spending the other level up in one of these.
>>
>>4788193
>>Regarding your moves:
I'm fine with any of these, but for the sake of putting votes out, my picks are:
>B. I'd like you to poison your blade and your caltrops
>H. I understand Orks have developed vocal chords. I'd like you to learn some mimicry.
What manner of poison would the blade and caltrops be coated with? Poison that causes status effects like blinding and paralyzing? Poison that just causes damage?
As for Mimicry, in a world of mutterbottles a right kind of voice can open us doors that might not open to us otherwise.

For our own level up I'd pick
>2. I'd like to improve my chances with an existing gun technique.
Improving Hammer Time.
for our last option I'm tossing up between Stealth and improved HH. In my experience ambushing and getting attacks off in other games before the opponent even knows what is going on can end fights before they even start. Likewise supercharging attacks is always useful and improving HH would let us do so more often.
I could go with either option.

I like the sound of
>B. I'd like you to poison your blade and your caltrops
>C. I'd like you to use more caltrops (lasts 5 turns)
but faster reload and more boomflasks might be interesting. As for what Joey himself could learn, a single killer shot would allow us to focus our options better: Hammer Time for crowds, HH-ed killer shot for single targets. As is, we're having to use Hammer Time for both, when it's not really the right tool for the job. Alternatively, Kneecap is already amazing, so if it were higher chance it might start being straight-up OP.

>>
>>4788193
My picks Mike are:
>B. I'd like you to poison your blade and your caltrops
>C. I'd like you to use more caltrops (lasts 5 turns)
Picks for Joey:
>2. I'd like to improve my chances with an existing gun technique.
Hammer Time
>1. Teach me stealth. That way if its a team of me, you and HB we can ALL sneak. It just seems useful.
>>
>>4789422
>it's not really the right tool for the job
How is it not, tho? It does plenty of damage, and bullets are cheap. Sure, if we use dwarfstoppers for every fight it'll get expensive (kinda, they're still only 60 a pop), but we can still do pretty good damage without it; it's not like we can expect 300 damage from a new tech without a prohibitively low %, can we? And honestly, Joey is much better at making others do more damage than a chance at a powerful hit for himself would be, that's why I keep pushing for the HH upgrade.

>Alternatively, Kneecap is already amazing, so if it were higher chance it might start being straight-up OP.
Now this I wholeheartedly agree with. Looks like most people prefer to upgrade Hammertime, tho. Not a bad choice, and it will definitely pay dividends against Edgewater, but still.
>>
I feel like I'm get a picture of what you'd like from Mike (poison and more caltrops, which put together will be good)

Joey is less clear at this stage.

Stealth, a killshot or improving hammertime seem to be front runners.

Would you like kill shot to be a dmage amplifier or something that will remove the last 1/4 of an enemies health, no matter what it is?
>>
>>4789495
I'm no strategy person but I like the latter, I think it'd combo well with Hammer Time without taking Hammer Time's niche.
>>
>>4789495
I'm not a fan of the damage amplifier, but the second seems like it'd be a less powerful version of HB's Guillotine? I dunno how good an idea is to double down on that.
>>
>>4789495
I'd also like to point out to the other anons that choosing stealth is choosing something that won't be useful if we ever want a party with Burstock, Richter and maybe Jorn too (I feel Karl will probably be okay, tho). Not to mention any new party members we might get later, or if we eventually convince Lumsden to join us on the ground.
>>
>>4789476
It's not the right tool for the job because, with armor working the way it does, 6 low-damage attacks against a single target are less effective than 1 high-damage attack. What's more, it's super resource-intensive, especially if HH'd. A single power attack, even if only moderately powerful, would give Joey something he currently lacks: a way to do >100 damage to a single target, without needing to set it up. As is, Joey has a powerful collection of options for dealing with multiple low-health enemies (Blast, Hammertime, inventory boomflask) but dealing with the kaprochuses was a pain, and a drain on our resources.
>>4789495
I'd like the killshot to be a damage amplifier. It's always fun to stack multipliers, and I feel like it'd get more use that way. Just to be clear, I am voting for the Killshot technique.
>>
>>4789524
>with armor working the way it does, 6 low-damage attacks against a single target are less effective than 1 high-damage attack.
To do less than 100 damage, the enemy's armor needs to be higher than 33 (or 83 if we HH it). At that point, we should be having Mike use his Boss Shells, or using at least one dwarfstopper. Or retreating, if we're not sure to recoup what we spent on the fight at the end of the dungeon. Which leads us to...
>What's more, it's super resource-intensive, especially if HH'd.
HH just uses up one mana potion, so 60 bucks. That's not something I'd call "super resource-intensive". Before now the turn we'd have to spend drinking it would be a problem, but not anymore. Bullets are 6 a pop, even less of a problem. And sure, dwarfstoppers cost 60 too, but we don't end up needing them every fight. Honestly, with how well we did in the forest, it's clear that all we needed was to be better stocked.
>A single power attack, even if only moderately powerful, would give Joey something he currently lacks: a way to do >100 damage to a single target, without needing to set it up.
As I said, >100 damage is not really out of the question for Hammer Time. We didn't drain as many resources as you think, if you go back and sum it up you'll find it's A LOT less than what we earned. Our only error was to go in understocked because we expected less fighting, but we can fix that easily for next time.
>>
>>4789555
fwiw, i can see anons point of view here.

i offered a powerful attack cause i figured you wanted to save money and mana. Fact is, if you HH kneecap a trollstopper shot its already pretty insane. If memory serves thats 800 dmg that ignores armour on most enemies.
>>
>>4789511
>won't be useful
This has not been a consideration when we've previously levelled up.
If we all our picks be useful for all possibilities, we'll be choosing same options for levelups each time. Three choices out of four will already be useful. One choice out of the ordinary will not suddenly cripple or stop Joey from functioning with others.
Being able to stealth means we can choose between quiet & methodical, and hot & heavy.
>>
>>4789594
This. Especially since not every instance where stealth is an option is going to be a dungeon where we want to keep in a group. Remember in the walled town, Highball went off on her own to scout with her stealth? Well, this way we'd be able to do stuff like that. And since party slots are limited, some extra utility is nice. Imagine being able to go into a dungeon with a full combat party and still having the ability to scout ahead or something.

I don't think CF is going to make this game require us to be 110% optimal to continue having a good time and making progress towards our goals, I feel like us being smart with the options we end up with will matter more than trying to pick the most optimal abilities.
>>
>>4789555
HHHT is basically our ultimate right now. Things is, it's really expensive in every sense. It empties our gun and drains all our mana, not to mention the cost of potions and bullets. I'm not saying we shouldn't use it liberallly, its why we were able to last in the forest for so long, but for the sake of efficiency I think a one shot move has plenty of merit. There's also the combo potential that opens up with an extra technique, such as Kneecapping, then power shotting the same or different target, than finishing up with a smaller, cheaper Hammertime, each of the 3 we can decide wether or not to HH the attack.

>>4789594
Agreed, also don't forget the possibility of Joey having to go solo for a bit like at the start of the quest. Maybe we need two parties for an objective, maybe we just need to duck someone while we're in town. You never know.

I think we're all forgetting the most important thing, Mr. Skelly's fortune. We should save at least one level up to talk with more people who might be able to teach us something truly outrageous.
>>
>>4789649
Oh, agreed. And speaking of Mr Skelly, we're skipping a very important teacher. We might want to speak to everyone else, then sleep on it.
>>
>>4789656
The Baron? Never thought about it but I guess he could teach us some stuff if we asked.
>>
>>4789594
You raise a good point, but Joey's main attacks are all pretty loud. Not saying stealth is useless, but it does seem like more of a non-combat or pre-combat ability.
>>4789573
Hmm. That is pretty boss. Now I'm torn between killshot and upping the dice % chance for kneecap. Kneecap is already amazing, stun+armor piercing, plus even if it misses it's still a bullet. If it were 70 or 80% chance each time, it would be a stunlocker par excellence.
>>
>>4789694
It will detract from the RP, but would you like just a list of who can teach you what?
>>
>>4789698
It might detract from the roleplaying a tad, but we'll still have to go talk to and ask whoever we choose to learn from, so it seems like it'll balance out. But it seems like what Mike or Burstock CAN teach us is at least partially impacted by what we ASK them to teach us, so is a list like that even doable?
>>
>>4789737
Only speech will net the details, sure and I'm ammenable to new ideas. This is just the basics. Besides the ones you know, there is :

Richter
-Any of her sphere spells
-Stronger blast
-Strength
-Athletics

Karl
-Conceal
-Bluff

Lumsden
-Dodge
-Parry
-Intimidate
-Powerswing

TheBaron
-Yo yo tricks
-Sweet dance moves

Everking
-Lose one spell, gain another random

Gilcrest
-Smoke rings
>>
>>4789784
Thanks OP, this is super helpful and saves a lot of time. Personally I'm interested in
>Bluff
>Dodge
>Yo-yo tricks
Thoughts, guys?
>>
>>4789805
Dodge would definately benefit our overall squishy build. Bluff is definately useful too. Since we're dropping off Karl in the near future, I'd suggest getting Bluff now while he's able to teach us easily, and go for dodge our next level, unless nothing else strikes our fancy (we got 2 slots left, right?)

Yo-yo tricks combined with Wizard Hands(!) could possibly lead to some wild shenanigans, but let's save that for later.
>>
>>4789805
Bluff does seem pretty good, the more I think about it. Joey's got a pretty silver tongue already, but a bit of extra bargaining power never hurts. Dodge seems good, but we already managed to get "Stance: Not the Face!" in the first thread, which gives +15 armor for a turn, and we've never really used it.
Personally, I'm thinking our best choices are:
-Mike's improving Kneecap's odds,
-Mike's Killshot training,
-Karl's bluff,
-Richter's stronger blast, or
-Burstock's versatile'd HH.

But we can only choose two of the progressions proffered, and I keep prevaricating on my preferred picks. Currently I'm leaning towards better odds for Kneecap, and learning Bluff from Karl.

Oh, and sweet yo-yo tricks or dance moves would be pretty dope, especially if WIZARD HANDS can interact with Joey's body, but we'd have to get a yo-yo or some kind of portable music player to really make best use of em.
>>
>>4789888
QM: Not the face was from an earlier build. I'm afraid youre too much of a mench to use it now
>>
>>4789888
depends if its an action or a passive. a oppertunity to dodge a particularly nasty attack would be worth using in the future even if it means loosing a turn, and passively avoiding damage is just nice in general

QM:

For the mean time. Is there any power you wish to learn from Mike lets
say it's

>a. improve hammer time
>b. learn kill shot
>c. learn stealth
>d. keep looking

As the options, just so I can re-gauge what people want.
>>
>>4789888
>-Burstock's versatile'd HH
I think people keep underestimating how useful this is. If you go back and re-read last thread it's pretty clear that HH is our most useful spell, and not being able to act while HHing someone else is it's only drawback. I know people are excited for new things, and Bluff does sound good, but removing the weakness from our best ability should be our first priority, not something we leave for another time.
>>
>>4790364
It may be our best *combat* ability, that doesn't mean it's the most optimal thing to get. We're not always doing combat. Chill. Also, it might remove one weakness, but it'll replace it by making Hell's Heart cost more mana. And while you may not care and think we should just carry around a hundred mana pots all the time,it might not be a big expense but it *is* still an expense.

I vote Stealth and Bluff.
>>
>>4790167
>b. learn kill shot
Kill shot and bluff imo.
>>
>>4790586
The healing potions we need to drink because we didn't go far enough to finish the fight are also an expense, and one that's gonna be worse. Not to mention that the 0-10mp it costs to do that by no means warrant a mana potion. Also, combat is a pretty big part of what we do. No need for chilling.
>>
>>4790746
All of which basically comes down to "do what we can already do a bit better" which since I believe you're the guy who's already arguing that we didn't lose much in terms of resources in the most recent dungeon I think is proof that we're quite good enough already. I'm more interested in level up choices that open up new options for us, rather than make us a bit better at something we're already pretty good at.
>>
>>4790167
>a. improve hammer time
If it's improved enough, it can become a one hit kill shot.
>>
>>4790882
It's not just "a bit better", it's a lot better. Being able to HH Mike's Breaker while setting off a Kneecap is not a small matter. And yes, we really didn't lose a lot of resources, and we did do good enough; that's no reason not to make our strong suit stronger.
>>
>>4790167
I'd like to improve Kneecap beyond 55% chance, but of the options given kill shot seems like the best.
>>4791183
Improving HH allows for tighter/faster combos, but a 2x damage multiplier is only as good as the damage it can multiply. Mike, Richter, and Highball all have high-damage attacks that are good targets for HH, so I agree that improving HH with Burstock is good. I just don't think it's super important to upgrade it right away, especially since combo attacks are well facilitated by stunner abilities like Kneecap.
>>4790586
Stealth AND Bluff? That feels a bit redundant to me. Both improve our ability to avoid combat, and have various uses in exploration and non-combat activities.
>>
>>4791267
>Kneecap
Yeah, Kneecap is probably the best to upgrade, but apparently doesn't have enough traction. I don't agree on the killshot, but you know that already.

>Highball
One thing I'd like to point out is that HB's attacks are with melee weapons, so we can stack that with Burnsauce.
>>
>>4791267
Stealth can be used for scouting, to get more information before we commit to an attack. Bluff is a conversational skill. I don't see them overlapping that much imo.
>>
>>4790167
My first choice is still
>>a. improve hammer time
but I'm alright with anything.
If we can't reach a decision between our final two choices, then we should just roll dice to pick one at that point.
>>
QM: Superficially, I still don't see a clear answer. I will look closer later.

If it helps, bluff unlocks extra dialogue options where applicable. Stealth, I put there just in case you wanted more autonomy from Mike and Highball or if you wanted to join them next time theyre spooking around.

I will try to make sure the game works and is fun regardless.
>>
I'm fine with changing my vote to improving Kneecap if it'll help things move.
>>

>>
>>4791267
>>4791281
>>4791885

so we're going for kneecap then
>>
>>4791998
A better kneecap is a nice compromise. I would like Joey to get the killshot skill for the sake of action economy. I think it would sinergize well with improved HH.

I think we should also start carrying a spare single shot pistol loaded with a Trollstopper as a backup. It could be a good fallback or a "Finish Him" option using Kneecap
>>
>>4792038
We do have some percussion pistols left over from the gopnik grunts, dont we? Lets use those.
I like how we're going for a charismatic gunslinger with support magic. Lets play more into that.
>>
>>4792532
I think you gave them to the people of Scadam to defend themselves anon.

There will be others, tho
>>
>>4792038
>>4792532
I wholeheartedly agree with these anons. Joey seems to be gravitating towards the cowboy archetype in a non-western setting, ala Akira or Firefly, but fantasy instead of sci-fi, obviously. It's a damn cool way to do things, and one that all the reasonably-popular choices (Killshot, Kneecap, Hammer Time, Bluff, Sneak, Hell's Heart) fit into nicely.
>>
>>4792623
Actually, an idea for going cowboy, replacing our riding leathers with some desperado outfit that say makes drawing multiple single shot pistols from it take one action, think blackbeards pistol bandolier, but on the inside of the outfit so its inconspicous. Also mandatory quickdraw buff for our big iron.
We should also consider upgrades to our revolver, its a nice piece and one which will likely remain our arsenal, even if not as a main weapon.
Maybe we could also in the near future get a long double barrel, or like a yellowboy lever action (Which FYI, also use .44 rounds, like many revolvers). Im guessing that the settings gunsmithry tech level is late cowboy era (with fantasy twist naturally).
>>
>>4793118
We might be able to look into stuff like that if we manage to track down that factotum Gomersal mentioned that made our piece. If we're lucky she might be able to upgrade it, too, although I dunno what she'd be able to add.
>>
>>4793203
She could say, i dunno, tighten up tolerances to let us use more powerful ammo (with more gunpowder), modify the cylinder and add a threaded barrel for us to use subsonic revolver ammo and a supressor (Yes, suppresed revolvers are a thing, check out the nagant revolver if you dont beleive me) or turn it into a double action revolver and make it easier to fan fire.
Naturally these both are ideas for the future, llikely after we kill Edgewater and start working on the Old Guard.
>>
>>4793283
What about combining all six barrels into a single barrel, so it fires a cannonball?!
>>
>>4793293
At that point we might as well just get a hand cannon.
>>
>>4793294
Yes, that's the idea.
>>
>>4793310
I meant as a separate weapon
>>
>>4793329
I suppose. Wait! We could get something like that, and then put six of them together. A revolver cannon!
>>
>>4793283
Her being an absolutely excellent factorum suggests we might be able to get a C96 or something really cool like that, Red 9 style. But a rifle or carbine does seems like a good companion to our sidearm. As it currently stands, it seems our goals for Joey's personal abilities over the next bit are:
-Improve gunslinging (Kneecap, Hammer Time, possibly Killshot)
-Improve tongue wagging (Negotiate, Charm, and possibly Bluff)
-Get some mana-enhancing robes (Keep the riders outfit though- a wardrobe of options!)
-Get some enhanced Firepower (Stopping gun, Rifle, and/or Automatic)
-Keep spells versatile and powerful (Douse, Drain, & Wrack as problem solvers, HH & Blast as damage, and a few nice utilities)

Obviously this isn't all gonna happen at once, but I like having an idea of what we're aiming for over the longer term. Joey's idealized vision of his future self.
>>
>>4793354
I'll stand by my idea of a desperados outfit in lieu of mana robes (Which we had at the start of the quest, didn't we?) since thats something that in my eyes would be more usefull and more importantly, COOL AS FUCK.
>>
>>4793370
The mana robes we had at the beginning of the quest got disposed of by gilchrest when he found them torn up and covered in ketchup blood. When we get a new Mana-enhancing set of clothes, I absolutely think we should save up and shell out for a specially-tailored set that look proper cool.
>>
>>4793370
Robes are insanely customizable. Burstock, Richter, Jorn and The Baron are all wearing robes. We can totally get cool robes. We can wear them when we're going to a town, or other place where we're not expecting people to shoot us or monsters to maul us.

Highball and Burstock seem to be getting along as they dance to some upbeat elven tunes. Any discomfort from their first encounter seems to have dissipated.

You and Mike wander to the TRAINING ROOM. Not astoundingly, RICHTER is working out a lat pull down when you enter. She stands up and towels off, convinced she's about to see something interesting.

Mike further trains you in the KNEECAP technique. Putting you through the paces until it becomes almost second nature.

The best result will come from the tailor that is part of the barons circle, but I get the feeling you wan it quicker not better.

Richter's eyes widen at your onslaught of compliments, she returns to a normal standing position and brushes her hair from her eyes.

"Once you are strong, bravery comes naturally and when you walk the path the moral compass follows with you. It is one thing to fight injustice and defeat monsters. But I am not sure how to discuss things. A story of a great victory could easily be overly gory or boastful. To say nothing of my singing or dancing..."

Richter smiles and collects herself.

"I will of course try. There is no challenge I will back down from - even social ones. I am merely anxious because I recently, unthinkingly invaded Mr Nagakura's personal space. He assured me he was untroubled but my concern is that I did it without realising what I was doing. It has been some time since I have been around this many people. I have forgotten, on some level, how to act."

Richter clenches her fists at hip level and smiles

"But I will overcome this."

You wander over to the kitchen. Jones is putting fatty cuts of some sort of white meat through a handcranked sausage making machine.

"Between the ice box and that nice young ork you hired, I think we'll always be eating good."

JONES throws the mince into a large bowl with more like it and begins adding herbs and eggs.

"Been years since I've worked with kaprosuchus, but I don't think I've lost my touch."

>"Will do. By the way, what's the craziest thing or hardest thing you ever had to cook?"

JONES thinks for a moment.

"There is a LOT of possible answers. Off the top of my head, I'd say scotch harpy eggs. You need to cook the eggs hard enough to shell and then coat with mince meat and breadcrumbs but soft enough that it can be cooked a second time (for the mince) and still leave to yolk runny. It's oddly delicate work."

JONES goes back to his cooking

"Truth be told it hard enough when the egg ISN'T the size of a damn bowling ball."

You pour yourself a large, cool drink of water, that actually hits the spot pretty well. You thank Jones and leave him to his work before wandering up the stairs and the ladder that lead to the wheelhouse.

Lumsden pauses from her finger push ups and stands up straight. She hands you a spotlessly clean plate.

Lumsden gives you a slightly patronising smile.

"Troll's worse. O.G never gave us any trouble. Their adherence to the old ways only offers them efficacy. Combat and war require adaption and creativity. Not really their thing. They do have numbers though, so try not to let them stack on you."

>"Seen anything wild up here? And, do you know much about the other airships that operate in the area?"

Lumsden takes a sip from a a drink that's pink on the top and orange on the bottom.

"Saw only one airship but it was too distant for me to make out. I heard something strange though, a bit like.."

Lumsden faithfully recreates a truly terrible sound.

"Again, it was far away. And it was probably just a whale or something."

>"I was hoping you could train me in something, actually!"

Lumsden fold her arms.

"I'm not teaching you to fly an airship, Joe.."

>>
>>4803597
Look, this may be true, but it's really, REALLY not what she needs to hear now. Everyone she's ever known has either died, left, or left then died. And we know we're not gonna leave any time soon. Let's give her a little hope, shall we?
>>
>>4803640
I get that she probably wants/needs an assurance that we won't leave or die, but honesty is kind of necessary for trust. And Joey is 19 and just beginning as an adventurer, he's not really in the best position to make promises about the foreseeable future considering that he can't even foresee his own future.
Better to tell the truth, and try to make our actions speak louder than words going forwards, then to offer her a promise Joey might not be able to keep.
>>
>>4803663
Honesty without empathy is just cruelty. Also, I'm not so sure this is actually true. Joey might not have had much direction in his life before the quest started, but he sure feels like he does now.
>>
>>4803706
Joey might well feel like he has some direction, but he's still in a bit of chaotic situation. It's difficult to foresee his future, even just considering the sheer plethora of options he has.
>Honesty without empathy is just cruelty
I mean, if you had some problem or grief, would you rather have a hasty promise, or sympathy? Honesty without empathy can be cruel, but empathy without honesty is worse. If Lumsden thinks we're just telling her what she wants to hear (and she's older and probably wiser, so she would), she'd know she can't actually trust us all that much. If we tell her the truth though, then she knows that we aren't willing to lie even by omission. That's a much better foundation for trust, especially if we continue to stick around, which we probably will.
>>
>>4804204
I like the words you're typing here.
>>
>>4804204
I don't think we have to be so uncertain, though, it just comes off as obtuse as best and mean at worst. We can say our current long-term plan is to stick around (which it is), but we can't make hard promises because that's not life's like, yo. We'll also try our hardest to stay safe, though this is a dangerous profession.

You do a slow blink let your eyes drift to the side thoughtfully and give a good natured smile. Eventually you say:

>"For as much of the future as I can forsee, yeah. This ship and these people are the best thing I've had going on... ever, really. I dunno what the future's gonna bring, but I'm not gonna just walk away from that."

Lumsden loosens her grip on the wheel and looks down.

"Okay..m....maybe once we've got a clear path. I'll come down. DOn't wait up for me or anything but...yeah.."

Lumsden does a small nod to herself and purses her lips.

[QM: Nice work, anon.]

>"Sounds tasty. I'm a whiskey kind of guy myself."

Lumsden looks surprised but not incredulous.

"Huh. Never seen you drink it. I get vermouth on your breath sometimes, but I kinda figured you were getting that indirectly - OH! and a few nights back you were staggering around absolutely reeking of gin."

>Thank you, thank you. Couldn't have done it all by myself.

Lumsden lets out a sudden explosive laugh that catches her off guard, but then gathers herself.

>"I want to be at that level someday. Think you could some me some pointers for my leg muscles instead?"

"Squat thrusts. Lots of squat thrusts. Do twice as many as years I've been alive twice a day at least."

Lumsden demonstrates a textbook squat thrust.

>""What was your weapon of choice back then, anyway?""

Lumsden flicks her hair
"I used a variety of weapons. Generally I had a short sword in one hand, with a kozhak mounted on my other wrist."

She can see a question forming

"It's an elven weapon, originall used for catching goats. Think of it like a barbed sickle on high tensile wire. You have to throw the hook yourself, but there's a mechanism that retracts the hook as part of the device. It can be used for traversing terrain, bringing an opponent into melee range with you, or just really hurting them. It's a good weapon."

Lumsden thinks

"I also carried a halberd, throwing axes..that sort of thing. Range wasn't my thing but....man."

Lumsden trails off and gets a nostalgic smile.

QM: To me, a Highball is a type of glass, a bit like a collins glass in appearance, so you can have a highball of anything.

The only time I've seen a highball listed on a menu was in japan whefe it is always whisky and soda. With lemon juice unless you pick a flavour.

Despite it being a main stay of my diet there, I was never once served a highball in a highball glass.

This has nothing to do with anything. Just making small talk while at work.

Because my only experiences with it are culturally specific I cannot say for sure.

But for me personally, A Highball is whisky (generally blended or bourbon) with sodawater, ice and lemon juice. Served in a stein.

"Only if you don't prepare properly and up giving them a victory because they are always desperate for those. A single win and they will crow about it for months, no matter how moronic and in effectual they are the rest of the time. I guess what I'm saying is that it's never stupid to fight back against such people. Just keep in mind, what they lack in creative thinking or adaption, they make up for with a weird sacrificial mindset. Last thing I heard they had developed a new spell and were using illegal potions. They should be opposed but you need to have a plan. You can't take even a branch of them head on."

Lumsden stands up straight and stretches her legs.

A lot of people use skvaders to deliver messages to a hub. There's one in each city. Once it gets to the city - it'll get to the address. I think that goblin mensch has one or two that he uses. You rent an register them in cities. I'm not sure how it works - but it does."

"So long as you kids don't tap out early."

You give Lumsden a quick wave and head back down the ladder. You check the guest room, currently Karl's, and see that he is not there.

You opt to fo up on the deck of the ship next and sure enough, Karl is there.

He leans over the railing, smoking a cigarette. A white skvader is eating dried corn at his feet. His eyes don't shift towards you but he acknowledges you presence with a small wave. He finishes his cigarette and stubs it out in a portable ashtray. He turns to you properly, with his hands in his pockets.

His expression is flat, but his tone is genuine.

"Good to see you, Mister Donuts. I can only assume your quarry got his ticket punched. Hope he didn't give you too much trouble. "

Karl does a small smile

"Thanks for putting for the assist by the way. I sent off one of my skvaders to Milosh's parents a bit back to tell them the good news. I'm pretty far from my office, sadly, so the payment I'll get when Milosh gets home is gonna come to me here."

Karl takes two cigarettes from a metal case and lights both, before offering you one.

"I do this because I'm going to give you a cut of the reward for your assistance. I'm afraid this isn't up for debate."

Karl takes a deep draw and exhales smoke out the side of his mouth.

You keep asking this every thread, and the answer remains the same. Yes. Multiple threads ago.

You can find the previous threads on sup/tg/. I'm in no mood to help a troll who comes in every thread asking the same question. If you're not a troll, then it won't kill you to do a little digital legwork yourself to find this. If you are, then kindly fuck off.

"Oh don't worry. I just hope I'm not taking advantage of your professionalism."
>Karl takes two cigarettes from a metal case and lights both, before offering you one.
Would it be rude to decline? Is the medical knowledge of this world up to date on cigarettes?
>>
>>4810567
With magic healing lung cancer might not be most pressing issue. Not sure though.
Joey has smoked pipe before though, so smoking in general is not exactly new.
>>
>>4810612
True, but I don't know if Mike was smoking tobacco. Joey can experiment and experience obviously, but I'd rather not get him a habit.
>>
>>4810567
I would lean towards politely decline. Worst that can happen is he's slightly narked he's wasted a cigarette, but we can always grab him a new pack when we're in town if he takes it badly. One cigarette for the sake of politeness wouldn't kill ol' Joe, but trying to cough through it in an attempt to look slick will more than likely end up making him look like a goob.
>>
>>4810567

It would have been okay to decline it if he hadn't lit it first, but it would probably be rude to decline now.

You hold up your hand to the offered cigarette. Karl nods understandingly, snips the end off it, and puts it back in the case.

>" I need to send a letter to Joonda. Will that skvader of yours work for that?"

Karl looks down at the Skvader resting against his leg.

"Oh, Runamuck? Sure. Just gimme a letter and I'll make sure it gets there."

>"I'm sorry, but is your last name pronounced 'Nagakura', or 'Nakagura'?"

Karl sighs

"It's Nagakura. But I got a big discount on my cards because it goofed. At this point either is fine."

>"Not trying to nag, obviously but have you managed to track down where Eccard Hilbosh is?"

Karl perks up. You have jogged his memory.
"Oh yeah! I meant to tell you."

He points to the west.

"All sources, signs, and my personal instincts point toward that canyon. There's no official settlements there. But there's signs of travel and signs of life. Your boy must have a shack there or something."

>"Richter seems to think she invaded your personal space. What happened? Everything cool?"

"Oh that. Yeah we crossed paths in the hallway and I gave her a little nod. Next thing I knew she had picked me up and was walking with me. I eventually asked her where we were going and it was like she snapped out of a trance. She couldn't apologise enough but I assured her it was all gravy."

Karl takes a thoughtful puff.

"I mean, I'm not thrilled about getting picked up but I've come to accept that its a thing I inspire in people for some reason. Not even mad, really. Most people who do it aren't as..."

Karl waves dismissively.

"Whatever. Point is, it's cool. I hope she gets that"

>'We're having a little get together in the rec room, you're more than welcome to join us if you like.'

Karl finishes his cigarette and does a small, happy nod.

"You know, I might just do that, sir. Thank you."

QM: Yeah, but we always fade to black for it, so don't go hunting if its lewds you want. Blue board, you know?

I (and other people) occasionally post my more explicit goblin stuff on /aco/ 's /ssg/ threads. Although I admit that's rare.

>"But there's signs of travel and signs of life. Your boy must have a shack there or something."
"Thanks Karl, you've been a real windfall."

I for one would like to grab some pen and paper from the office and draft that letter while hanging out in the lounge. Or we could go straight to the lounge, and just enjoy the party.

ok, thanks. I understand

But lets also invite Gilcrest, he's a neat enough dude for that. I bet Surrey wouldnt be interested, but how about just a quick visit to tell her its happening and to see if she's happy with the potion ingredients we got her.
>>
>>4811299
I'd probably lean towards going straight to the lounge, we wanna take all the opportunity to socialise with the crew. We can sort out the letter when it's got our full attention.

>>4811857
Gilcrest for sure, but I'm kinda in two minds about Surrey. On the one hand I don't wanna seem like we're excluding her, on the other like you say it's pretty much 100% that she wouldn't be into it, and I don't wanna disturb her when she's trying to work. I suppose we could always just poke our head in and make it quick if it looks like she's busy.
>>
>>4812555
We should at least make sure everything we got her is up to spec, might as well invite her too.
>>

Support. She can handle a ten second interruption.

You decide to drop in on Surrey, even if it's just for a pleasantry. SHe flips her goggles up as you enter and sets her work aside. She gives you the smallest of smiles.

"Welcome back, Mr Donuts. I must say the team you have assembled -in this case particularly Mr Shenandoah have been a Garsend for our progress here."

Surrey gestures to the bones of dwarven bone meal.

"What we have here is nothing short of a 3 month supply. Put simply, for the rest of this month and the two months following, I will be able to manufacture for you HOLLERBOTTLEs. They will last longer, have a longer range and have better quality of sound."

SUrrey sips her coffee and gestures dismissively.

"I'm no marketing expert and I've no wish to be, but even if we don't worry about selling them ourselves and simpley sell them wholesale to a separate retailer, such as the baron we stand to make around 15-20'000 gp at the end of each month. That's after potion expenses."

Surrey shrugs
"Of course as the month rolls over, you'll need to pay ship rental as well as salaries, and other expenses but...make no mistake that's a safe amount of gold. Especially seeing as you have other avenues of income."

Surrey finishes her coffee.
"The only issue is that, for maximum profit, we need to have enough of the product, so we must sell it in a batch. So, we won't see a thin coin until the batch is ready. About another 22-23 days from now. Still. Something for you to keep in mind in case you're worrying about making ends meet."

Surrey is about to resume her work then looks up again.

"Was there anything else?"

>1. I was wondering, would you be able to make something that can deal with green slime?
>2. Keep up the good work, Surrey. You are the very heart of this company.
>3. Just thought I'd ask. We're having a party in the rec room. You wanna join us?

Short and to the point, let's not waste her time. I might change the "You wanna join us?" for "You're welcome to join if you want to take a breather at some point", just to avoid asking a question we know the answer to. People like knowing that you know them.

I love Surrey's eminent professionalism. Nothing wasted, no nonsense, just quick, efficient, and communicative.
>>
>>4813862

Okay, that puts my money worries to rest, seeing how that alone is enough to keep us in the black for the next three months. How common are dwarf sightings? I'm thinking it might be worth it to try hunting them once a month or so if it's a steady revenue stream (regular ones aren't going to give quite that haul, of course).

We'll need to remember that we still have one level-up slot open, since we had 4 and only filled 3. I encourage it to be part of the opening post for the next thread.

"I know they resist magic and fire doesn't work, but what about freezing them somehow?
>>

I think that's a question for Dr. Ash, but it doesn't hurt to ask from Surrey as well.
>>
>>4815281
>>4815359
I think we should probably let her work without distractions. She's busy.

Why didn't anyone ask Lumsden to teach us Dodge or Karl to teach us bluff/conceal? Are we waiting for TheBaron to teach us Yo yo tricks or Sweet dance moves or to meet a new person for an entirely different option?
>>
>>4816527
I'm waiting for us to back to Burstock to upgrade Hell's Heart.
I think CF is just gonna make a multi-choice after the party so we can just vote for whatever we want instead of a single yes-no choice for each conversation.
>>
>>4816527
Because between upgrading HH, learning Bluff, learning Killshot, and so on, our ability to reach a consensus has ground to a halt. Any individual option seems to have more people against it than for it, so I'm waiting for things to either be put in a multiple-choice format, or for people to decide on which option seems like the best or the best compromise.
