Saturday 30th September (Day 166)

You wake up that morning unable to breathe. The reason for that is quickly apparent. Otto has taken up residence on your face and you promptly pick him up and shift him to your chest. He makes his displeasure known, squirming as you move him and immediately running off out of the bedroom once you put him down.

You take a minute to relax and gather your bearings then climb out of bed. You quickly shower change and eat. You leave some food in a bowl for Otto and scratch his neck one last time before leaving for the warehouse.

When you arrive, it’s clear someone’s already in since the door is open. You make your way in and you quickly spotlight coming from the lounge area at the back. You make your way over and find Miho inside watching a kettle boil.

“There’s a saying about watching pots, you know,” you offer, leaning against the door.

“Oh! Fritz!” Miho jumps slightly. “Sorry, I was thinking! I didn’t notice you. Tea?”

“Sure, I’ll take a cup,” you move to sit at a nearby table and Miho follows you a minute later, tea in hand.

“So, what were you thinking about?”

“A meeting with the Commanders of the other schools on our side,” Miho says. “You remember I mentioned debate over who would be in charge? Erika put herself forward since she’s commanding the largest contingent, but I sort of want to be in charge…”

>Offer to go with her to help her make her case.

“Would you like some help?” You offer. “I can come with you; help you make your case if you want.”

“I…are you sure? If you’re not here then who’s going to oversee getting all the tanks into Ooarai?”

“Azusa can do it,” you reply. “We’re docked anyway, so all she has to do is form ranks and get our tanks into the city.”

“Which anyone could do,” Miho nods, following your logic. “Alright. We must make sure to let her know before we leave though.”

“Fine by me.” The two of you sit there and sip away while you wait for people to arrive. It only takes a couple of minutes for you to hear more people arrive.

The two of you walk out and see Rabbit team approaching.

“Morning Rabbits,” you say to the lot of them as they appear. “Who’s going to be sitting it out today?”

“Saki volunteered!” Aya replies. “How selfless of her!”

You look at the girl who’s staring out at the clouds. “I’m sure she’s heartbroken.”

“Truly! You should go shopping with us to make it up to her!” Aya argues.

“We’ll see,” you reply, avoiding any promises for now. “Azusa, Miho and I are going to a meeting, so you’ll be in charge of getting Ooarai’s tanks into town. Can you do that?”

“Of course, Commanders!” Azusa replies with a nod. “You can count on me!”

“Alright, we’ll leave you to it then,” Miho says. She turns to you and gestures to the nearby heliport. “Shall we go?”

“Let’s,” you nod.

The two of you head for the helicopter already sitting on the pad. Two of the Aviation club students are already there and after taking a minute to secure yourselves, they lift off.

“Where are we meeting them?” You ask Miho.

“Anzio’s schoolship!”

It’s also docked, so it’s a quick journey. You’re directed to a landing pad. The one next to it has Black Forest’s Fa-223 Drache sitting on it.

“Hey guys!” Pepperoni is sitting in a car, waiting for you. “Meeting’s at a breakfast place nearby! Hop in!”

You and Miho climb in and Pepperoni guns it. You’re not sure how long you’re holding on for your life, but it’s quick and you’re soon at the restaurant. Anchovy and Miho’s friend Emi are already there, but you can’t see Erika anywhere.

>Acquire breakfast foods.
>Talk to Anchovy about the leadership problem.

Your first port of call is the nearby shop. There are copious amounts of carb-y pastries and you waste no time staking a plate high. You have an Anzio gold card, but according to the girl it’s free anyway for the meeting. You take several biscotti, a couple of brioche buns with vanilla and jam in them, and a slice of toast. The student behind the counter helpfully hands you another plate and a cappuccino.

You tip a couple of the pastries onto the second plate and hand it to Miho.

“I see someone is eager to take advantage of Anzio’s hospitality!”

“What can I say? It’s the best,” you reply, turning to face Anchovy.

“Please, you’ll make me blush,” she replies, waving you off. “Besides, I didn’t cook today, so it’s not me that deserves the praise.”

“Unfortunately, we’re not here to discuss the good food are we?”

“Indeed! We’re discussing the question raised yesterday on the leadership of our team, aren’t we! A hard question – Commander Nishizumi obviously has more experience but Hermann is supplying most of the force, and neither was willing to give ground! Truly a conundrum!”

“Couldn’t have said it better myself,” you nod. “What are your thoughts on it? My opinion is pretty obvious.”

“I’m flattered, Fritz, but I don’t think Erika would accept me as overall commander.”

You shoot the grinning Anchovy a flat look, but it only takes a couple seconds for you to crack and smile as well. “Yeah, I don’t think that’d go down well with Erika, she’d be… unhappy.”

“That’s one way to put it,” she replies.

>“So would you back Miho or Erika if it came to it?”
>“Would you back me if I put my hat in the ring?”
>“I’d support you if you said you wanted to take overall command.”

(I'll just take this chance to remind you that Miho has skills that help her when she's in command.)

>So would you back Miho or Erika if it came to it?
Would be pretty bad for us to suddenly try and take charge after offering to help Miho's bid. It would also be a dispersal of voices, increasing Erika's chance of winning. And Chovy is nice enough but we can't commit to helping her at this point.

>Fritz argues that he should be commander, and Erika argues that she should be commander
>Let argument continue for a bit

>Miho meekly says "oh no I couldn't possibly" or something along those lines
>If all else fails, bring it to a vote among the commanders.

Reasons for why Anchovy should agree to our Miho Conspiracy:
>We're friends
>Showing up that rich Black Forest school
>If the above are unconvincing, she can owe us a favor
I realize now that we don't actually know much about what Anchovy wants besides money, which we don't have direct access to.

>“So would you back Miho or Erika if it came to it?”

“You expect it’s going to become an argument? Stupid question, it probably will,” Anchovy sighs. “It’s difficult, because Black Forest is making up for the tanks we can’t really provide, but I’ve fought under Miho before and I trust her judgement more than Itsumi’s so it’s difficult.”

“If it means anything, I’m sure that Erika would rather not be in command and win, than be in command and lose,” you say.

“We don’t know if she would lose,” Anchovy points out. You can see the indecision warring on her face.

“Anchovy, with you supporting us too, that’s three of the four teams involved supporting Miho becoming the overall commander. At that point, no matter how many tanks she’s supplying, she’ll have to give into the pressure.”

“Alright,” Anchovy sighs. “I trust you, Fritz. You’ve not led Anzio wrong this far and we still owe you for your help.”

“Even after you gave me an Anzio gold card?”

“Even after that,” she says. “Thanks to our new tanks we’ve been doing really well in duels and smaller tournaments.”

It’s then that Erika arrives. Koume is trailing after her and she gives you a wave. You return it and let her, and Erika get some food before you approach them.

“Erika,” you say, nodding at her. You don’t get a chance to greet Koume before she throws herself at you.

“You didn’t stay around after that last match to greet your oldest and bestest friend, huh?” She pouts.

“I had to go talk to Erika,” you reply. “You were gone by the time I was finished.”

“If the two of you are done,” Erika interrupts as the others arrive. “We have something important to discuss.”

“No fun sometimes,” Koume sighs and lets go.

“I assume you haven’t miraculously come around to my way of thinking overnight?” Erika asks Miho.

“Uh, no. Not really…” Miho replies. “I don’t suppose that you’ve come around to mine?”

“You suppose right,” Erika replies.

>Try to convince Erika to take the position of Vice-Commander (how?)

I’m not really sure what to say to convince her to become vice-commander
>>
>>4822798
This is tough. We can probably force Erika to acquiesce via a vote but she wouldn't be satisfied and the dissatisfaction would probably bite us later (insubordination at a critical moment, etc.). It really would be better to get her to genuinely accept Miho as the better choice, but how?
>Try to convince Erika to take the position of Vice-Commander
How? Well, I'd say we should emphasise the effects of a disunited leadership on the rank and file. One of the best features of Black Forest historically has been completely accepted and respected hierarchies, nobody ever goes rogue to glory-hunt or run away. This multi-school coalition is different. It's inherently prone to confused hierarchies. Miho has the support of three of the four of us, but 3/4 isn't enough. It's asking for trouble if leadership disputes continue long enough for the various tank crews to notice them, and start wondering exactly who their loyalties lie with.
>>
>>4823715

+1 we can also point out the difficulties that the teams had yesterday in the Saunders vs Everyone and how Miho successfully navigated those problems through delegation during the university match

>Try to convince Erika to take the position of Vice-Commander

You look between the two girls as the meeting quickly becomes a deadlock. You’re tempted to force the issue, but you know what Erika’s like after fighting against her and alongside her several times.

“Erika,” you begin, her head snaps to you. “I think you should take the position of vice-commander.”

She opens her mouth to argue the second you say that but you hold out a hand.

“Will you let me finish? Please?”

“Fine,” she sighs. “Talk.”

“Thank you,” you nod. “I don’t think I have to explain the effect of a disunited leadership to you. Having a rigid, united hierarchy is one of Black Forest’s strengths, right? There’s no confusion about who’s in charge and what must be done. Compare that to the multi-school forces we’ve seen. Yesterday for example, if not for Mika’s suicide rush it could’ve gone horribly wrong for the everyone team. I’m not saying you’re a bad commander Erika, just that Miho has done it before and that everyone of our subordinates trusts her to do the job.”

Erika considers what you said. The silence stretches to a minute, broken only by Koume eating a slice of toast.

“Alright Nishizumi,” Erika says finally. “I’ll follow your lead.”

“It’ll be just like old times,” Miho replies with a smile. “We still have a little time, so should we talk tactics?”

“I know what the three of you have brought,” Erika replies. “Of the thirteen tanks we’ve brought, we have three JagdPanzer IVs, six Panthers, three Tiger IIs and a Panzer III.”

“So, it’s just a matter of how we organise it,” Miho says. “If we wanted easier command and communication then we’d do it by school, but Ooarai and Black Forest are the only teams that have made substantial contributions.”

“Alternatively, we can group it by tank type, or form balanced task forces,” Erika says. “It’ll require a bit more coordination, but it’s possible.”

>Support the idea of forming balanced task forces.

“I like the balanced task force idea,” you say. “We can even weight them depending on where they’re going. Any headed for the fields can take more tank destroyers and vice-versa for the city.”

“Sounds like a good idea,” Emi nods.

“A sound plan,” Anchovy agrees.

“Alright, how to divide it up,” Miho says. “Since there’s twenty-five tanks, we do it in five groups of five, maybe?”

“Who’s in charge of each one?” Erika asks. “You, Me, Anchovy, Akaboshi and Hermann?”

“If Fritz doesn’t mind then I think Emi should be in command,” Miho replies.

“I’m fi-”

“Nah, I’m good,” Emi says, cutting you off. “My tank is still out of action, I’m just here representing Bellwall’s contribution.”

“So, Fritz is charge of one then,” Koume states. What follows is fast and dirty negotiation on who gets what. You don’t have much time left before you need to be present so it gets loud quick.

It soon becomes apparent that you and Erika are slated to head out into the field. To that end, along with yourself and a Panther, you get given Hippo team, Turtle team and Bellwall’s Elefant. Erika has two Panthers along with Rabbit team and a JagdPanzer, making her similarly tank destroyer heavy. The rest of the tanks are distributed between Miho, Anchovy and Koume who will all be heading into the town.

With that done, the lot of you pile into one of Anzio’s trucks for a quick journey into town.

“Do we know what side we’re starting on?” You ask Miho.

“The northeast,” she replies. “It seems they like the idea of keeping us away from the main city area.”

You’re soon at your team’s rallypoint. The truck stops to unload most of you while Miho and Erika stay in. The two of them begin heading to go meet the commanders of the other side, leaving yourself, Koume, Anchovy and Emi behind.

>Begin organising your team into the respective task forces.

“Right, we don’t have any time to waste,” you say to the commanders present. “Lets get everyone split up into their groups so there’s no confusion when Miho and Erika get back.”

The four of you begin to make the rounds to the different groups. Koume heads to the Black Forest contingent to let them in while Anchovy and Emi do the same. You head to the Ooarai camp where Azusa is out and giving orders.

“She’s better at it than Kawashima – they actually listen to her!” Anzu quips to you as you approach.

“Hey!”

“Don’t you talk to my friend that way,” you reply jokingly. You hug a nearby Yuzu before explaining what’s happening. “We’ve been divided up between groups, so we need to get into them. You guys are with me, so whenever you’re ready move closer to the bridge.”

“Who else is with us?” Yuzu asks as she lets go.

“Hippo team and Bellwall’s tank,” you reply. You leave them to find Hippo team and make the rounds between the different teams present. There’s no plan for where exactly to rally, but you know roughly what each group is doing, so you’re able to direct people to near enough the right location. It helps that Anglerfish team is the lead tank for one group so you can just direct all tanks of their group to follow them.

It takes a while, but by the time that Miho and Erika are back, all the groups are arranged.

“Alright, Erika, what’s the plan?” You ask as the seconds tick down towards the beginning of the match.

“Find their force in the fields, destroy it and then flank the tanks in the town,” Erika replies. “It’s pretty simple, and I know you know what you’re doing.”

“I like to think I know a thing or two,” you reply.

You watch as the flare signalling the start of the match streaks into the sky and explodes.

“All tanks! That’s the signal!” Miho says. “Remember! Coordination is going to be hard this match, so make sure to listen to your task force leader!” She pauses to take a breath. “Panzer Vor!”

You need no further instruction. “Task Force Hermann, let’s get moving.”

“Naming it after yourself, huh?” Anzu asks. “How modest of you.”

“I didn’t pick the name,” you reply. “It’s just the easiest way to organise things.”

“Sure, sure,” Anzu replies. “That explains why we used flowers during the All-Stars match.”

“You’re not going to get a rise out of me,” you reply, turning your attention back to the match. Your group is moving slower than you’d like. You’re conscious of Bellwall’s Elefant and would rather not leave its firepower behind. There’s also the fact that Frederick isn’t particularly fast in comparison to some of the other tanks on the field.

“Hermann, this it Itsumi,” Erika’s voice crackles across the radio.

You look up to where you can see her tanks beginning to cross the bridge. “I’m listening, go ahead.”

“The road that runs parallel to the river, what do you think of us taking our heavy tanks that way, letting our mediums sweep wider and tank destroyers take positions further out? If we do that, we’ll be able to cover the entire field.”

>"I believe it would be more tactically prudent to take the heavy tanks North with the rest, rather than go down the road. It would be difficult for them to assist in our objective of securing the fields from that road, given the limited lines of sight. However, if that's how you wish to deploy them, I will follow your orders."

“Hmm,” you can hear her thinking over what you’ve said. “Yeah… that damn forest blocks the road from seeing most of the field. Saunders might’ve taken some rocket tanks again and they’ll try the same thing as last time.”

“If we’re more spread out through the field, they won’t be able to hit us like that,” you reply.

“Fine, stick to your plan,” Erika decides. “I’ll send one of my Panthers down that way to scout it if nothing else.”

“Sure thing, boss,” you reply.

Erika’s tanks are soon over the bridge and it’s your turn.

You send your Panther across first and follow, with your tank destroyers bringing up the rear. The bridge has thankfully been built with Sensha-Do in mind, so there’s no complications and once you’re past it, you’re able to open the throttle more to better get to your chosen positions.

You turn your attention to the tanks on the other side of the river for a minute. All three task forces are making good progress. Koume’s group is all together on the coast road but Anchovy and Miho’s group is mostly using what buildings there are to get closer to the main town area without taking the main road. A smart decision given how open the road is.

As your approaching the northern forest and Erika’s tanks are starting to enter the smaller one, she crackles over the radio.

“Fritz, can I ask you a question?”

“Shoot,” you reply.

“We need a way to scout ahead of ourselves without exposing too much, but we don’t have any light tanks. I want to be aggressive, but the tanks we have don’t lend themselves to that.”

>“If you recall your Panther, between it, mine, me and you we have a decent armoured fist we can push forwards with.”

>"Isn't that the job of the Panther you sent out?"

“The job of the Panther is to watch that road, we can’t really expect it to scout the entire field for us,” Erika replies.

>“Why not ask Miho for a light tank?”

“That’s a good idea,” Erika concedes. “I think they’re a bit too far away to get here in time to contribute though.”

“So, what can you do?” You ask.

“That’s the question isn’t it?” She grumbles back. “Alright, continue what you’re doing and standby for further orders.”

“That’s the plan,” you reply. “You know, if they don’t challenge the forest then the Panther could be useful for scouting.”

“True,” she replies, leaving it there. You turn your attention back to your team as you approach the forest.

“Right… Geshiko? Could you position your Panther towards the front of the woods? We can cover the tank destroyers between us.”

“Moving, Commander,” the commander of the Black Forest Panther accompanying you replies. You assume you got her name right since she doesn’t correct you.

“Max, do the same thing would you? South of the Panther if you would.”

“Sure thing, Fritz. Man, driving this thing is different!”

“A gun’s a gun,” Ruby chimes in.

“I miss my high-powered radio,” Leo sighs, taking the chance to complain.

“- tanks! Enemy advanced force has been spotted!” You catch most of Miho’s message thanks to Leo quickly switching the radio channels for you. “A Stuart! The rest of the enemy force is probably close behind.”

“That means it won’t be long till we encounter them,” Erika states. Her group seems to have stopped and set up in the forest slightly to the south of you. You turn your binoculars southwest and scan the field.

“Speak of the devil…” you spot three Crusaders and a 7TP moving about a kilometre and a half away. It’s technically inside the effective range of the guns of your tank destroyers, especially the Elefant, but the light tanks are moving fast and weaving hard.

It will likely be close to impossible to hit these tanks knowing what skills some of them have. This is most likely a scout and/or baiting attempt. There will probably be better targets following them that we can strike when they think the way is clear. It also helps us to get our buffs from staying still for a turn.

>Let Erika know and let her decide.

“Task Force Hermann, there are four light tanks heading our way, a kilometre and a half southwest. Aim up but don’t take any action. Understood?”

“Yes sir.”
“Sure, Commander.”
“Whatever you say, Fritz.”
“Holding fire.”

Once you’re sure no one’s going to give away your position, you quickly switch to the Commanders channel.

“Erika, this is Fritz, I got four light tanks headed our way, three Crusaders and a 7TP.”

“A scouting force,” she replies instantly. “Don’t open fire on them.”

“I haven’t,” you reply, getting a sigh of relief from her.

“Good. They’re probably screening for heavy tanks and tank destroyers. Those are the real high value targets. Understood?”

“Understood,” you confirm. You go back to watching the gap and listen to the radio reports as you do. Your teammates in the town are spotting other tanks as they appear, and calling them in. Leo is dutifully plotting the contacts for you on a map. It’s not immediately useful, but keeping an eye on the situation is good.

Something catches your eye. You swing your binoculars around and take a good look. “Erika, I can see those tank destroyers you were talking about. I got two ISU-152s, an Archer and a pair of rocket Shermans.”

“Damn rocket tanks,” she grumbles. “According to my scout there are four heavy tanks moving towards the bridge.” You hear some choice swear words before she starts giving orders again.

“Alright, Task Forces Hermann and Itsumi! New plan! We need to hold these tanks in the field and stop them from crossing into the town! They outnumber us here, so that means the team in the town is poised to win if we hold! Hermann, your job is to hold the line. My Task Force will move to cover the bridge.”

>“Aye, aye, Captain.” That’s a direct order if you’ve heard one.

>“Aye, aye, Captain.” That’s a direct order if you’ve heard one.

You don’t need any further instruction from Erika, nor does she volunteer any. She of all people knows what you can do, and you intend to demonstrate why she’s right.

“Alright, Task Force Hermann. We have a lot of enemy tanks heading our way and it’s our job to stop them. I want everyone sighted on one of those rocket Shermans. There’ll be no alpha strikes today.”

You get a chorus of affirmatives from the other tankers under your command. “No firing yet though, wait for my signal.”

You turn your attention to the attached FG1250. You’ve not used it much, but after some fiddling and coordination with Leo you’re able to get it working. You’ll know about everything within several hundred meters now.

“Alright, Ruby,” you say. “Those rocket tanks, I need you to set an example for our subordinates.”

“By hitting one of those rocket tanks?” She sighs.

“Exactly,” you reply.

“Man, you guys don’t know how lucky you are you got me,” Ruby grumbles. “Shut up and let me aim.”

“We love you sweetheart!” Max shouts, earning him a kick from Ruby.

“That’s enough Max, get us as close to the treeline as you can,” you order. Max makes the adjustments and duly follows Ruby’s adjustments. You don’t move for a solid minute before she fires.

“On the way!”

Frederick’s gun cracks and it’s echoed by the sound of the rest of your Task Force. Seconds later, the shell hits one of the Shermans. You aren’t able to tell who knocks out what, as the four other shots impact seconds later.

“That’s both of them!” You announce to your Task Force.

>Hold position and switch targets. (Tank Destroyers)
>Activate Gunslinger
>Report disabling of rocket tanks to Miho so she can more comfortably concentrate our forces

As you observe the smoking rocket Shermans, reports filter in of battlefield progress elsewhere. Miho and Anchovy have just begun their engagement with the forces in the city. Not much was lost in the initial exchange, just a single Panzer III caught out of position. The Allied side has assumed a defensive posture, likely waiting for their heavy tanks to flank. Miho is similarly reticent to engage, as Koume isn’t yet in position to help.

Regarding said heavy tanks, from what you can overhear of Erika talking, they’re pushing for the city. If they can cross into it, your team will be hard pressed to deal with it.

“Task force! Prepare to hit those tank destroyers!” You order. “Axel, Ruby, I want us to put dents in every one of them, understood!?”

“You got it, boss!” Ruby replies for the two of them.

“Good,” you nod. “Miho, the rocket tanks are dealt with.”

“Thanks Fritz,” she replies distractedly. You don’t press her given what she’s dealing with and turn your attention back to the advancing tank destroyers. Annoyingly, one of the advancing Crusaders has dropped a smoke grenade right in front of you.

As you consider the situation, you get a radio call from Erika.

“Hermann, I’m attacking the enemy heavy tank formation to stall for Akaboshi. If I can waste a couple minutes, she can smash the southern flank and let the rest of Ooarai turn to face properly. I want you to do your best to do the same so those light tanks have to deal with you and can’t race around for a flank.”

Can we cancel our Gunslinger and preserve it for another turn? I mainly wanted it so we could remove their big guns in quick succession, but that's not as necessary when there are now two layers of concealment between them and us and we only have to deal with a few light tanks.

Also, it's really nice of those IS-2's to show their sides to Erika's entire task force.

>That’s what you were doing anyway.
>Deal with the light tanks. The tank destroyers aren’t going anywhere fast.

>Use Coax MG on any tanks that get close.

>“Sounds like a plan.”

Erika grunts her acknowledgement of your acknowledgement and shifts her attention back to her fight. You do the same, but you’re surprised to here your gun bark.

“Ruby?” You ask, it’s not like her to act without orders.

“It just felt like the right thing to do,” she replies slightly confused. You check the results and see she missed the 7TP.

“Make sure you hit next time,” you say. Hippo team lets loose, hitting the approaching 7TP. Axel loads in record time and you’re able to get another shot away, this one also hitting the 7TP, knocking it out.

“How’s them apples?” Ruby declares as the white flag pops out the 7TP.

“Good job, Ru- Max! Full reverse!” Your driver doesn’t question it, rapidly shifting the tank back. You’re able to move fast enough to put yourself in front of a shot aimed at Hippo team. You aren’t however able to put yourself in front of the Student Council who take a hit from the northernmost Crusader, but Ruby is able to somehow put a shot into them.

“Ruby? Axel? You guys alright?” You ask. You feel an immense satisfaction coming from somewhere outside of you and it takes you a second to place it as Frederick. It seems that your gunnery team’s unusual vigour is a result of him. Good to know.

The Student Council duly returns fire, taking out the Crusader that hit them. You search for more targets, but the last Crusader that dropped a smoke screen seems to have fled into the forest.

Elsewhere the battle is going alright. Erika’s lost a Panther and a few other tanks in the city have gone down, but they’re giving as good as they’re getting, and Koume is about to hit the flank.

It takes you all of three seconds to figure out you’re in a pretty good position and another two to conclude that you’ll perfectly fulfil your orders by sitting in the forest sniping the tank destroyers.

By now they probably know where you are and their barrels facing your direction seems to support this. Despite that, you still have several meters of trees between you and any of their shots which will help to make it difficult for them.

“Erika, there’s a Crusader fleeing into the forest north of you. It’ll be in a position to flank you.”

“Copy that,” she replies. She has her hands full, so you leave it at that, and turn your attention back to the tanks ahead of you.

“Task force, good job with those light tanks,” you say. “There’s only three tank destroyers left for us to deal with, so get aiming and shooting.”

You get another chorus of affirmatives from the tankers of your task force and you watch as they rapidly begin to aim up. As they do, you take a moment to listen to the radio. It seems Koume’s force has finally hit the enemy and they’re crumbling quite rapidly to the south as Koume’s heavy armour punches into them. Erika is holding, which is perfectly fine given the odds she’s facing.

“Ruby, Axel, think we can get a shot into each of those tank destroyers? If we can take even one out, we’ve guarenteed our win on this flank.”

“We can hit them,” Ruby confirms for the both of them. “Ruby and Axel carrying the match again, as usual.”

“And you’re only in position to do that thanks too?” Max asks.

“Frederick,” Ruby replies. You feel a flash of humour, apparently Frederick finds it funny too.

>“Alright ladies, whenever you’re ready.”

Ruby takes that as her cue. With almost supernatural speed she lines up a shot on one of the ISUs.

“Fritz?”

“Hit it.”

“On the way!”

You watch the round sail out of the barrel and towards the tank destroyer. It’s followed a split second later by a shell from the Panther next to you. You’re left with a grim satisfaction as you see the tank destroyer get taken out before it even had a chance to do anything. It takes you a moment to realise that it isn’t entirely your satisfaction and Frederick seems to be revelling in the destruction.

“You having fun?” You ask the tank as Ruby whoops and swings the turret to the next target. You’re not prepared for your vision to swirl and to be shifted into third person where you get a front seat view to Frederick the Great’s turret getting devastated by a 152 millimetre gun and the months of repairs it took to get him a new turret and back into shape.

You’re then dropped back into your own body. You take a second to blink away the stars then take a look around you. The Student Council has been knocked out, but the other ISU is also out of action and the Archer is making tracks.

“Geshiko, run the last few seconds by me would you?”

“The JagdPanzer IV accompanying us opened fire on the other ISU-152, which you capitalised upon and knocked out,” she reports. “Your reload was phenomenally fast. My credits to the loader.”

“I’ll pass them on,” you say. As you say that, Ruby puts another shot down range, damaging the fleeing Archer.

“The tank stole my second ISU!” Ruby realises. “Freddy! You greedy old bastard! Didn’t you have enough on the Eastern Front!”

The only reply is a feeling of self-satisfaction.

You ignore your gunner attempting to fight your tank and listen to the radio. Erika and the heavy tanks she’s been fighting have slowly been grinding each other done and Erika’s tank is now immobilised, even though it hasn’t been knocked out yet. Koume’s hammer has hit and the enemy forces in the town, too scattered and too few to fight are now being cleaned up.

With the Archer running away, the last threat to your task force is effectively dealt with. Similarly in the city, though it was close for a bit, Koume’s appearance has shifted things in their favour. It’s also a bit too far away for you to intervene. Erika however is neither secure nor too far away for you to reach in time. That’s doubly the case if you ditch the cumbersome tank destroyers.

“Hippo team, Elefant team, we’re leaving you here to watch for the Archer. Myself and Geshiko will advance on the enemy heavy tanks to the south in order to support Erika. Erwin, you’re in charge.”

“I won’t let you down, Mackensen,” she replies.

“I’m sure you won’t. Now, Geshiko, make sure you keep up.”

“Keep up? With all due respect, I’m pretty sure my tank is faster than yours.”

You don’t bother replying to that, instead switching to the intercom. “Max, if you would? As fast as possible please.”

“Aye, aye,” there’s nothing else for a few seconds as he frantically slams switches and levers. Frederick then shoots forwards and out of the woods. You get a face full of leaves as you do, but the tank is almost instantly at full speed. You hide a small smile of satisfaction as Geshiko’s Panther is left scrambling to keep up.

You reach the forest north of the road Erika’s fighting on well ahead of Geshiko. Frederick punches into the forest, knocking over a small tree or two and you almost immediately spot the last Crusader. The girl commanding it looks at you and freezes.

Ruby starts to swing the gun towards the off-guard Crusader. You take control and keep it pointed forward.

“Ignore it, We’re hunting bigger game tonight.” You switch to the radio. “Geshiko, deal with that Crusader.”

“Yes, Commander,” the girl coolly replies.

You pass the Crusader that’s rapidly attempting to turn and face you. "Thanks for the smoke!"

You see confusion on the other commander’s face before it’s replaced by realisation.

“Aw fu-”

She’s cut off by Geshiko who begins firing on the Crusader as ordered. A glance back a few moments later reveals the Crusader a smoking wreck, white flag sticking out the top.

“Target eliminated,” Geshiko reports.

“Nice job,” you reply to her before switching back to your hunt. “Rabbit team, if I’m in the middle of the forest north of the road, where would the enemy heavy tanks be?”

“To your right!” Azusa chirps. You thank her and look in that direction. Sure enough, you spot an IS-2 rumbling down the road towards Erika. It takes a hit from the Tiger II and returns fire.

“Ruby, it’s stopped to shoot,” you say to your gunner, spotting the opening. “Max! Full stop! Fire when ready!”

“On the way!” Frederick’s gun fires, nailing the side of the IS-2’s turret. There’s another flash of amusement from Frederick as the white flag pops up.

“That’s a kill,” you confirm. There’s gunfire elsewhere, some of it quite close.

“Fritz, your status? I’m out of action so it’s on you,” Erika reports. “This flank is secure though…took long enough.”

“You did,” you laugh.

“That’s good to hear, because it seems you’re now in charge,” she says. “Your StuG and one JagdPanzer is still operational. Do what you will with them, I’ve done my bit.”

“So, you’re retiring for now?”

“It’s not like I have a spare tank around the corner,” she grouses.

“Of course, of course,” you snicker. “All right. Task force Hermann, Task force Itsumi. I’d like all remaining tanks to converge on the southernmost bridge. That seems to be where they’re all heading so we can pin them between us and our allies in the city.

“The Elefant and I are moving now, Mackensen,” Erwin confirms.

“We’re moving too!” Azusa says helpfully.

You push through the forest onto the road and you’re joined a few moments later by Geshiko.

“Throwing surprises at your subordinates isn’t the most optimal way to go about things,” she says calmly.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” you reply. Azusa and the JagdPanzer appear a few moments later and the four of you set off towards the south.

You spot the Archer again, amongst the buildings to the north of the bridge. Your guess was also right, the few remaining tanks all converging on the bridge with your allies in hot pursuit.

“I suppose we should deal with the Archer,” you say. Your small formation slows to a stop and begins aiming up.

“On the way!”

Ruby opens up first. Surprisingly, she has her first miss of the match, the round hitting a nearby building and demolishing the top floor of it. You are concerned for a moment about the Archer firing back and hitting you, but it doesn’t really seem to be ready for your appearance and you have three other tanks with you.

Your concerns are proven unfounded when the tanks accompanying you opens fire. All three shots hit home, making sure the Archer is out of action.

“Good job team,” you say, observing their handy work. The flag takes a moment to pop out the top, but it does and you watch through your binoculars as several girls unpeel the carbon roof to get some air.

On the other side, the chase is ongoing. There’s some minor skirmishes as net is closed, but for now the Allied forces seem content to run and the rest of your team content to chase. The last tank of Anchovy’s task force goes down, but you’re not particularly concerned given the disparity in tanks available to you.

“Good, get to it then,” your team needs no further instruction. You set off with Geshiko as Rabbit team and the JagdPanzer accompanying you split off and begin heading towards the trees. As you get closer to the buildings on the north end of the bridge you spot some enemy tanks filtering across the bridge. You consider stopping to open fire, but most are already across and behind buildings. There’s also the fact that if you wait a little bit longer then they’ll soon have all the tanks following them to deal with as well.

“Keep pushing, Geshiko,” you say. “We’ll move forward for the best possible shots.”

“Aye, Commander,” she replies. The two of you keep moving forward, you start to notice the rest of your team as tracer fire starts streaming across the river, tracking enemy tanks on the other side. They don’t seem particularly concerned with you, which makes sense given there are far more enemy tanks on the other side.

“Several targets are visible,” Geshiko reports.

>Destroy the nearby Stuart. Whittle away their numbers.

“Let’s hit the Stuart for now,” you reply, eyeing the only good target you can see.

“Of course, Commander,” Geshiko’s turret begins turning towards the Stuart and Frederick does the same.

“On the way!” Ruby announces as the round flies out the barrel. It zips out the barrel, followed a second later by Geshiko’s round. The result is a forgone conclusion. Both rounds detonated against the carbon plating in spectacular fashion, leaving the light tank wrecked.

“That’s a kill,” you announce. You swing your binoculars back towards the town and watch as the fighting continues. You see the Centurion advance slightly and take out a Panther and the Tiger P in rapid succession. Unfortunately for them, the advance leaves them exposed and the Elefant behind you is able to land a devestating hit. It’s followed up by the other three tank destroyers behind you, ensuring that Centurion isn’t going anywhere fast.

“Good kill ladies,” you say idly, observing the destruction. The rest of the enemy tanks go a similar way. The three remaining medium tanks seem to realise that there’s no possible comeback left and decide to sally out to fight. They get decimated, but they take out another tank or two with them.

The field goes relatively quiet as the tank shots stop.

“I think that’s match over,” Geshiko states. That’s confirmed a moment later by an announcement from the judges.

“Good job everyone,” you say to your task force and Erika’s as you relax. “You all did great.”

“I did do great, didn’t I?” Ruby quips.

“Five two but yer ego’s six foot,” Max replies. You smile and listen to the squabbling as you take a moment to relax.

>Walk towards the concentration of knocked out tanks and try to find where all the Commanders are meeting.

You sigh and begin to climb out of the tank.

“Axel, you’re in charge. Make sure that Ruby and Max don’t kill each other.”

You get no verbal reply, but both Max and Ruby go quiet as you jump down.

“Going somewhere?”

You turn around and see Erika marching towards you. She doesn’t stop and continues walking past you. You speed walk to catch up to her. “I could ask you the same question.”

“Well I reckon, that we’re headed to the same place.” Erika replies. You soon make it to the field side of the southern bridge where your opponents are climbing out of their tanks. Amongst them, you spot Darjeeling and Kay, both look slightly battered but otherwise they’re chatting animatedly.

“Ah, Commander Itsumi, Commander Hermann. A good match was it not?” Darjeeling asks as the two of you approach.

“It was adequate,” Erika nods.

“It definitely was a good match,” you reply to her.

“Man, I thought we had you guys in the town for a moment,” Kay cuts in. “I thought that the reason we were strugglin’ on the field was because all the tanks was there, but no! They appeared from the side and gave us a hell of a smack! Came outta left field!”

A few minutes later, Katyusha arrives atop Nonna accompanied by three girls dressed in blue that look vaguely familiar. Miho and Anchovy also appear, and Darjeeling has somehow also set up afternoon tea in the time it took them to get here.

You take a seat and accept a cup of tea the table breaks out into several smaller discussions about the match and Sensha-Do in general.

>Join Miho, Darjeeling and Katyusha in discussing the match and why it was won/lost.

You watch the small blonde girl wolf down cakes for a minute, her and her two associates ring some bell deep in your mind. You decide to just put it down to seeing them somewhere before in passing. You also pass over getting involved in a debate on schoolship cuisines. While Saunders food tastes good and there’s a lot of it, nothing compares to Anzio on quality.

You instead listen in to Miho, Darjeeling and Katyusha. Erika is also listening in nearby.

“Perhaps the biggest thing I learnt, is that an armoured fist must not crack on the first obstacle it faces,” Darjeeling muses.

“To be fair, Erika is a pretty tough nut,” Miho chips in. Said nut grunts in approval at the metaphor.

“Bah! It’s probably because of those rocket tanks!” Katyusha argues. “We could’ve brought more heavy tanks to supplement the forces in the town! An IS-2 or two would’ve stopped the eastern push in its tracks.”

“The rocket tanks performed pretty well in the last match though, didn’t they?” Miho asks. “I recall Saunders wiping out half the heavy tanks present in a single massive salvo.”

“That and coming under bombardment is…shall we say not fun,” Darjeeling says with a slight shudder. You decide not to question her, you’ve not taken much sustained rocket fire and she’s usually very unflappable.

“It’s funny that you mention reinforcing the town,” Miho says. “Instead of your armoured fist.”

Katyusha looks like she’s about to say something, but decides against it, instead stuffing a scone into her face. She’s attacked by Nonna a moment later who wipes away some of the detritus from her face.

“What do you think, Fritz?” Miho asks. “You’ve been awfully quiet over there.”

>“I think it comes down to controlling the town in Ooarai.”
>“I don’t think it requires more heavy tanks, just having them in the right places.”

>Rocket tanks aren't a wunderwaffe. They have their limitations. But switching them out for two more heavies might not have done much either. Positioning and area control are key. Having two more heavies in the town would've resulted in the North being cleared faster and instead of dealing with one flanking force, you would have had to deal with two. The fact that your forces were practically concentrated in two general areas, with nobody watching the beach approach, is what won us the match. Koume's ability to flank you unimpeded was the lynchpin to our victory.

>“The rocket tanks are great tools when used right, it’s just they weren’t this match.”
I disagree that their concentrations of force were what lost them the match. They just didn't use their concentrations properly. They theoretically had numerical superiority in the North, but didn't protect their massive indirect fire advantage, and sloppily engaged our entrenched position. If they had instead been more careful with their rockets, they could have blasted our defensive position and erika's task force as soon as they were spotted, and then proceeded to flank Miho's force. Them having a few extra tanks to more properly resist Koume's slow flank would have done nothing. They didn't arrive until the match was half way done, and by that point they were just icing on the cake. They could have not existed entirely and we still would have won the match.

“Katyusha didn’t ask for a lecture,” she grumbles between bites of cake. “You’re right about the tank concentrations, they could’ve been used better. Itsumi should’ve been out of action in the first five minutes.”

“It’s a shame she wasn’t,” Erika snarks from nearby.

“You will be next time you face off against Katyusha!” Katyusha replies, shaking a fist at her.

“Easy, easy,” Miho chuckles getting between the two of them. “The Commemorative Cup is just for fun, right? It doesn’t matter till the Winter Cup comes around.”

“And when we get there, I’ll remind you why Black Forest is the best school in Japan,” Erika says over Miho’s head.

“During winter? Really?” Katyusha asks. The back and forth continues, but it’s more light-hearted than before.

The conversation eventually dissolves into general chatter about upcoming events. The Saunders culture festival is the big one, being only a couple of weeks away. You idly wonder how you’re going to make a movie in two weeks, but it seems no one else has really started yet either and it’s less movie and more excuse to string together action shots of tanks. Exams are another big topic, being at the same time as the club fairs usually are across the schoolships. You’re not particularly concerned for exams or for the culture festival, but it’s good stuff to know.

As the damaged tanks are recovered, people start to depart for their schoolships. You do the same, thanking Darjeeling for the tea and heading back to Ooarai.

>You still haven’t congratulated Yukari on that job, go do that.

As you return to the ship, you’re reminded of your upcoming duel with Maho. You take a moment to consider it, but you remember that she took a Panther last time to keep things even so she’ll probably do the same this time, meaning you don’t have to worry about being at a disadvantage or running around trying to finish Werewolf’s repairs.

“Say, Fritz, do you have anything planned for the rest of the day?” Miho asks as the two of you begin walking back to the schoolship’s town.

“Not really,” you admit. “I need to congratulate Yukari on her new job, but aside from that I’m free.”

“Well, if you need to do that, you should come over to hers now!” Miho suggests. “She’s been talking about having us all over but wanted to wait till both of us were free after the cup. If you’re free now…”

“Us including me?” You ask.

“Yep,” Miho replies. “The rest of Anglerfish team and you!”

“Well, sure I guess.” The two of you head towards the barbershop that Yukari’s parents run while Miho lets Yukari know the two of you are coming. It’s closed when you reach it, but Miho texts Yukari and a moment later Yukari appears from the back and runs over to the door.

“Hello!” She greets the two of you. “Everyone else will be here shortly! Please, let them in when they come!”

She thrusts a key into Miho’s hand.

“Are you going somewhere?” You ask as she throws on a jacket.

“Yes! I need to go shopping! I’ll be back in a minute!” She sprints out the door and you watch with Miho as she heads to the nearest convenience store.

“Miho do you…”

“Know why she ran to go shopping? Not really.”

The other three members of Anglerfish team arrive a few minutes later and you let them in as instructed. They’re equally as in the dark as you but accept it as Yukari just being Yukari.

Yukari returns a short while later and directs the five of you to her living room while she’s in the adjoining kitchen. Saori heads into the kitchen to offer assistance, but is firmly rebuffed, bringing back some snacks instead.

>Go into the kitchen and offer to help.

“I’m going to go in and offer to help,” you say as you stand.

“Don’t bother,” Saori pouts. “I went in to offer, but I was shut down!”

“Maybe she doesn’t like your cooking, and it’ll go better for me,” you joke as you head into the kitchen.

“Fritz Hermann!” Saori shouts after you as you go into the kitchen. You ignore her and duck into it.

“Hey Yukari, do you need any help with the cooking?”

“Nope!”

“Are you sure? I’m half decent at it, you know?”

“I do, and I’ve enjoyed all the food you’ve cooked thoroughly, but you can’t help with this dish.”

“Really?” You peer over her shoulder and have a look at what she’s making. “It looks like a pretty standard curry to me.”

“You still can’t help with it,” she replies.

“Is it a special recipe or something? Secret family one or something like that?”

“Not really,” Yukari replies. “It’s just something no one else can help with.”

“I see,” you don’t, but you’re not about to force your help on her. “Congratulations about the job by the way.”

“Oh, thank you! It’s like a dream come true!” Yukari gushes. “It’s great! I never thought I’d actually be able to get a proper job to do with tanks outside of maybe being involved with a team somehow!”

“You’re welcome,” you reply. “I’m happy for you, it’s great that you’re able to put your expertise to good use.”

“And here my parents said I’d eventually have to get a real job!” Yukari laughs. She thinks about that for a moment. “Well, I suppose it is a real job, but I could work around tanks for my entire life and not get bored!”

Yukari’s soon done with the curry and you’re enlisted to help her carry it and the bowls into the living room. You do so and after helping serve everyone, you start to eat it. It doesn’t taste bad, it tastes pretty good actually, but as far as you can tell there’s nothing special about it.

>Ask Yukari what the big deal was now that the cooking’s finished.

You let everyone eat and do the same yourself. It’s slightly amusing to see the different portion sizes everyone takes. You reckon you had the most, but Hana might’ve edged you out. Saori seems to be watching Hana’s bowl and then preparing hers accordingly while Miho, Mako and Yukari all take normal sized portions.

“This curry is excellent Yukari,” Hana says as she finishes. “I didn’t know you were one to cook. It certainly never seems that way when we’re all together.”

“Well I’m not actually very good at it,” Yukari laughs. She holds up her hands and you can see plasters littered across them. “I’m still a bit clumsy, and this is the only thing I can cook that isn’t an MRE…”

“I could always help you with that, you know,” Saori says. “I don’t mean to brag, but I’m a pretty good cook!” She gives you a glare as she says that but there’s no heat behind it.

“Uh thank you, but everything else always ends up on fire somehow,” Yukari laughs.

“So, is that why you cooked it? Because it’s the only thing you can cook without it ending up on fire?” You ask.

“Yes, yes! That’s exactly why!” Yukari nods. “You see, I learnt how to cook this several years ago during food tech and it tasted great! But the only people I had to share it with was my parents! So, I promised myself that one day, I’d make it for my friends! Today I got that chance to make it for my best friends-” she gestures to the rest of Anglerfish team, “and my first friend!” She gestures to you.

“Oh, Yukarin,” Saori begins to talk, but words seem to fail her.

>“Well, the curry tastes great. Thank you, Yukari.”

“You’re welcome Com-” Yukari is cut off as Saori dives over the table onto her.

“That story almost made me cry! But don’t worry Yukarin, now you have me and the rest of Anglerfish team, and we all love you oh so much, and no matter what happens we’ll never ever let you be alone again, unless you’re going on one of those reconnaissance missions!”

“Should we intervene?” You say to Miho next to you as you watch Yukari start to go blue under Saori’s assault.

“Eh? No, this is normal,” Miho replies. “We just wait it out usually, it should be over before Yukari passes out.”

“Erk!” You look over as Yukari squeaks under Saori’s assault.

“On second thought, maybe we should intervene.” It takes some doing, but between the three of you, and Mako half-heartedly cheering you’re able to get Saori to let go and save Yukari.

“Man, that was scary,” Yukari murmurs. “I’m glad that we have Leo and Max to go through that for us.”

“I’ll have you know they enjoy it!” Saori retorts.

“Well, they don’t complain about it to us,” you chip in.

“See!” Saori says, gesturing to you, “they love me!”

There’s a little more bickering and light-hearted teasing, but the conversation soon settles into conversation about the next big things. Your duel is briefly discussed, but after two weeks of constant tankery, the girls are eager to change topic. Saori briefly brings up the Saunders Culture Festival and Miho mentions that she starred in a movie Black Forest made for it last year. Further prodding makes her clam up on the topic, sounds like she doesn’t want anyone to know anymore.

After a few hours, the girls begin to scatter. You leave as well after thanking Yukari once again. You look up into the sky as you leave. It’s early evening, so not a lot of time left to do anything.

>Give Frederick a once over. He didn’t take any hits, but it doesn’t hurt to be cautious.

You consider going to the history club and asking about the planned expedition. They did say it could wait till next weekend, but you’re eager to find an answer. Ultimately however, duty comes first so you decide against it and instead head to the warehouse to check on Frederick the Great. He didn’t take any damage in the battle, and you keep him in good shape, but it never hurts to check and since the Automotive club are taking today off from repairs, no one has checked on him.

When you get to the warehouse, the door is closed but unlocked. You open it and walk in. The light is on at the back, near the lounge area. It’s on the way anyway, so you pop your head in. Rabbit team is inside, mostly hard at work. They seem to be doing a mixture of talking about tanks and studying, so you decide not to disturb them and head to Frederick.

A preliminary visual inspection seems to indicate that he’s perfectly fine. He’s a little dirty and a track pin or two is slightly bent, but it’s nothing to worry about and should easily last you another day of Sensha-Do.

Everything else also seems alright. A quick look at the engine confirms it’s not in danger of catching fire anytime soon and the gun has been taken care of by Ruby, the barrel being spotless when you check it.

Unfortunately, as always, there is a problem with the roadwheels. None are unserviceable, but thanks to your burst of speed during the match a couple are close to being, to the point where there’s a chance it could be dangerous if left alone. It probably wouldn’t be, but it could and as always, it’s better safe than sorry. That necessitates a replacement and replacing one requires removing a bunch more.

>Get to it and ask Frederick for any war stories as you work.

You decide to get to it. Your crew have been working just as hard as you. Arguably, even harder given sometimes your duties as commander mean you have to shirk your duty as a member of the crew.

You grab a nearby toolkit and get to work. It’s boring and long work, the worst kind, but it does give you an opportunity to talk to your tank a bit.

“Hey old man, you there?”

Usually, a question like that would annoy him and get a reaction. It seems however that he’s still in a good mood from dealing with Russian tanks yesterday, so it doesn’t warrant more than a feeling of vague annoyance.

“I take it you are there then,” you reply to the weird feeling. “Do you have any cool war stories? Werewolf didn’t see too much of it.” You pause to pound your fist lightly on the side of the Panther next to you. “But you were active for most of the war, so you must have seen a lot, right?”

Confirmation, approval, you should’ve known the prideful old tank would like talking about himself. You’re forced to brace yourself for a moment as a lot of information and scenes of war flash past you.

You have to take your hand off the tank and recollect yourself lest you pass out from the strain.

“Not all at the same time,” you complain, throwing a spare nut at him. It bounces off and at you suspiciously fast, but you’re agile enough to move your head out of the way.

Questioning, patience, it seems he’s more than willing to wait if he gets to talk about himself.

>Ask for a story about Frederick himself.

Approval, faint joy, you’re not surprised to find out that he wanted to talk about himself, though you suppose he’s earnt that right. Images flash through your head for a moment as he seems to consider what to show you. It suddenly stops and settles on one.

It’s cold. That’s the first thing you realise as you come to. You’re not seeing things from your grandfather’s perspective. Instead, you’re threaded to the weird small area omniscience and focused view in one area that the tanks seem to perceive the world through. Frederick is positioned at the edge of a hill and some distance ahead of you through the gunsight you can see a burning city.

You realise there are people around, and one inside the tank. Frederick (or the weird presence inside your head that is probably Frederick). It’s not someone you recognise, but you can tell that Frederick regards them warmly. From the way he’s taking care of the shells you reckon he must be the loader.

Knock, knock, knock

Someone’s knocking on the side of the tank.

Obergefreiter Homel, are you in there?” You refocus your attention on the people outside the tank. You see an SS officer escorted by two members very heavily armed soldiers.

Y-yes! Coming!” The corporal scrambles up and out of the commander’s hatch. He climbs down the turret and jumps off the hull.

The second he’s on the ground, the escorts’ guns are raised and pointed at him.

You found out.” Homel states miserably.

We did,” the officer sneers. “Did you really thing we wouldn’t be able to find out? When you’re in the army no less?

I just wanted to fight for my-” he’s cut off as the officer punches him in the stomach.

Germany is no country for people like you,” he sneers. “On your feet, that tree’s branches look strong enough to do the job.

One of the soldiers grabs Homel and forces him to his feet. With a prod of his gun, the soldier forces the dejected Homel to move. Homel moves past the front of Frederick, patting him and mumbling an apology as he does, the soldiers right behind him.

The second he’s out the way, Frederick moves. It’s not very far, and you’re not sure how he did it without starting his engine, but he’s parked close enough to the edge of the hill that he begins to slide straight down it, the three soldiers stuck clinging to the front of him.

You pointedly turn your attention away from the front of the tank and dull ‘squish’ you hear. When you refocus, Frederick is upside down, resting on his hull and turret which thankfully hasn’t fallen out.

You hear footsteps as someone comes racing down the hill.

Oh thank god, they’re dead,” he sighs. “You do this on purpose, Freddy?

There’s no reply that you can comprehend, but Homel laughs all the same.

I knew I wasn’t crazy when I said you could think. The others will be so surprised…” He trails off, likely remembering that he can’t exactly stay.

Homel disappears, then returns a few minutes later fully kitted out. “The Finnish lines are only a day’s match away. Hopefully they’ll be willing to turn a blind eye to me.” He places a hand against Frederick’s upturned hull. “Thanks for your help, Freddie.”

That’s the last you see of Homel as the vision collapses. You find yourself back in the warehouse. Even better, the replacement of the roadwheels is done.

>“Russian, American, German, is there any nationality you haven’t fought?”

Amusement, bitterness, he considers it for a moment. You see flashes of several knocked out tanks, including a few captured Panzers put into action by the Soviets. He seems to settle on Japanese, showing you a Chi-ha.

He then seems to remember where he is, and you see a flash of Miho, and a hint of embarrassment.

“I guess there isn’t anything you haven’t fought,” you chuckle. “Any reason you picked Miho?”

Warmth, you’re shown a flash of the girl sitting next to Frederick and talking to him. You’re not particularly surprised that she can.

“Interesting,” you murmur. You sigh and stand up, giving his side a slap as you do. “Alright mate, we have a tough fight ahead of us tomorrow. I’ll leave you to rest...or whatever tanks do when they’re alone.”

Questioning, dismissal. It seems Frederick doesn’t know and doesn’t care. You give him another slap and walk off. Rabbit team seem to have finished whatever they were doing and left, so you turn off the lights, lock the doors behind you, and leave.

>Cuddle Yuzu to sleep for good luck.

It doesn’t take you long to figure out what you want to do next. A quick text confirms that she’s at her place and she readily agrees when you ask if you can visit.

You head up to her apartment and she lets you in.

“Hiya,” she gives you a quick hug then guides you in.

She sits you down in her kitchen and hands you a cup of tea.

“Big match tomorrow,” she starts.

“Yeah, the Prez hasn’t let me forget it,” you laugh.

“Don’t let her scare you with it,” Yuzu frowns. “Winning is important but it won’t be the end of the world if it goes the other way.”

“You think I’m going to lose?” You ask, feigning hurt.

“No,” she replies immediately. “You’ve already beaten her, so what’s one more time? I’m just saying the school is already safe, so it won’t be the end of the world if you do.”

“Well I’m not going to, so Anzu’s money is safe and I won’t have to worry about the end of anything.”

“Good,” Yuzu nods. “Now I’m going to bed. Care to join me?”

There’s only one answer to that question.

>Get Frederick ready and into town.

That morning, you don’t really want to leave the bed. The outside world is cold, harsh, and challenging, but Yuzu and her bed are soft, warm, and inviting. Eventually, it’s Yuzu herself that gets you out of bed, reminding you of the importance of what you’re doing and promising a reward afterward.

That’s enough to get you out of bed and after a good luck kiss, you head back to your apartment to change. You also put out food for Otto who appears very annoyed at your disappearance last night which you apologise for.

After lots of pets and neck scratches, he seems to forgive you and you head to the warehouse. Your crew is waiting at the door, so you quickly unlock it and get inside. Frederick is where you left him and looks fine, so the five of you quickly get to work on your pre-match inspections.

You slide into your seat as Ruby and Axel begin inspecting the gun and Max and Leo head for the engine. All of your equipment looks fine and you soon get the okay from the others, so you slowly set out.

It’s a quick journey from the warehouse to the city. You see several of your Sensha-Do comrades along the way who wish you luck. When you reach the ramp, Miho is there.

“Max, hold it here for a moment,” you order. Max stops and Miho expertly climbs aboard, seating herself on the turret next to you. “Alright, continue.”

“I’ve already told my sister that you’re taking a Tiger! She’s going to do the same!” Miho shouts over the engine noise.

“Good to know!” You shout back as you move down into the port.

“Good luck, Fritz! Maho is really good!”

“I know!” You shout back. “You rooting for her or for me!?”

“That would be telling!”

She rides with you all the way into town till you reach the meeting point. Maho isn’t there yet, though she should be along soon.

“I’m going to find a good vantage point,” Miho says as she turns away.

“Not going to wait for your sister?”

“And be forced to leave the city? No way!”

>Catch Miho before she can leave and ask for information.

“Hey, Miho!” You shout after her as she powerwalks away.

“Yeah!?” She shouts back.

“Can you tell me anything on what Maho’s been doing to prepare!? Anything at all!?”

She stops moving and turns back towards you. She doesn’t say anything for a moment, likely considering what she can say without giving too much away.

“Big sis has been watching all the matches of the cup! Figuring out how to fight in Ooarai, where the battles ae won! Stuff like that!”

“Alright, thanks Miho!” You don’t push her for anymore. You’ve left it a little late to ask and you don’t want to put her against her sister accidentally, so that’s good enough for you.

“Good luck!” She’s running instead of walking now, you hope she makes it in time.

Maho arrives a few minutes later. As Miho said, she’s commanding her Tiger. She stops on the other side of the judges and dismounts. You do the same and start walking over to her.

“Hello, Fritz,” Maho greets you with a smile. “It’s a good day to fight.”

“It sure is, Maho,” you reply. You hold out a hand which she takes and shakes firmly.

“I hope it will be…a better one than last time,” she frowns, likely remembering the tank failure that lost her the match before it could properly begin. “This time we aren’t facing off in Panthers.”

“True,” you nod. “But Frederick the Great isn’t any old Tiger.”

“Do you think you’re the only one with a chatty tank?” She retorts.

That catches you off guard, but then again, if Miho is able to talk to tanks it stands to reason that Maho can too.

“No, but I think I’m the only one with two,” you say. Maho rolls her eyes at that but doesn’t contest it.

The judge walks over and begins listing the rules. It’s all stuff you’ve heard before, but you listen anyway in case there’s anything new. Maho gets to pick where she starts given she’s the ‘away’ party even though technically you come from even further away. You don’t think they’d accept that argument though.

She picks the northeast starting point. The judge confirms that, gives her directions then walks off.

>“Good luck, Maho.”

“Good luck to you too, Fritz,” Maho replies. “I hope this is a good one. I would hate to leave Japan without having a chance to do this.”

“Well, I live in Germany, so it wouldn’t be too hard to get me,” you reply.

“I suppose it wouldn’t,” Maho replies with a smile. “See you on the other side.”

She turns around and marches back towards her tank. You watch as she expertly climbs up the tank, then turn and do the same.

Max already has the engine running and the second you’re in the hatch, you’re able to give the order to move. By now, the two of you know the streets of Ooarai so you’re quickly able to make your way south.

Ruby pops out of the hatch next to yours. “I hope it goes like last time.”

“You do? It wasn’t the greatest match.”

“True,” Ruby concedes. “We won though, and I don’t want to lose our win streak. If anyone’s going to do it, it’s Maho.”

“Hmm,” you hum, but don’t say anything in response. Max and Leo have also cracked their hatches open. The weather’s getting colder, but the inside of the tank can get really hot.

“If you want to win so badly, do you have any ideas how to do that, or are you just going to moan at me to do it?”

“Are you just going to moan at me to do it?” She mimics before sighing. “Aside from hitting her and doing the job that all of you are just facilitating? Way I see it, we either go into the fields and turn it into a long-range duel or we try to draw her into town and use our knowledge of it to get a flank. I don’t fancy going face to face with Maho.”

>“Well, you’re our sniper, so we’ll be relying on you when we head out into the fields.”

We probably could also go knife fight her, especially with Frederick buffs to awareness in close range, but she has the potential to ambush us there. Long range seems more consistent. Plus last time, we ambushed her from the city, she might be expecting the same.

>“Well, you’re our sniper, so we’ll be relying on you when we head out into the fields.”

“Heh, yeah, damn straight. I’m the sniper,” it seems she approves of that. “The fields huh? Not much in the way of cover out there, if she comes that way then it’ll probably be a sniper duel.”

“That’s the point,” you nod. “Our biggest strength is what we can do from far away, might as well go somewhere to take advantage of it.”

“And there are only so many places we could be hit from the city,” she strokes a non-existent beard as she considers it. “I’d say what if she doesn’t come to us, but that’s a stupid question.”

“Definitely, she might head into the city first, but she’d be coming straight for us. It’s more likely she’ll be avoiding the city entirely given she knows nothing about the layout compared to us.”

“I wonder whether we can take advantage of that,” Ruby mutters. She considers that for a moment before shaking her head. “Sounds like a good way to trick myself. I’ll leave that stuff to you.”

“And I’ll leave the gunnery to you.”

“Smart,” she nods.

You soon reach your starting point at the south of Ooarai. Max quickly turns Werewolf around and your crew begin the process of closing the hatches for safety. You don’t, and you suspect Maho won’t either. You glance at your watch, and see you only have about a minute till the starting flare shoots up.

“Alright gentlemen-”

“Ahem.”

“And lady,” you add. “This went pretty well last time, so let’s make it two for two.”

“Aye, Fritz,” Max replies. You hear the thunking of gears being changed and as soon as the starting flare is shot, you’re on the move.

Frederick lumbers to a start. Tigers are not particularly fast tanks, but thanks to Max’s skilful handling, you’re moving quickly. You roll past the houses and through a light patch of woods. Max initially avoids the trees, but upon realising they’re all small, he takes to just going through them instead. It’s faster than manouvering, but too much of it and you reckon you’re going to end the match with a headache.

Thankfully, you’re able to get through the trees quickly and you’re soon closing on the bridge.

“Never again,” you hear Leo groan as you clear the last of them. You’re better off since there’s nothing for you to hit your head on, but only slightly.

“Head in the game everyone,” you say before turning your attention back to the situation at hand.

As far as you can see, there’s three ways to approach the field. You could hug the river and head straight down the road parallel. It’s the most direct route towards Maho and the trees would shield you from any fire from the northernmost woods. It could however put you face to face with Maho at close range if she also goes that way.

Alternatively, you could go parallel to the main road. The main road is slightly raised, creating a dip where you can go sort of hull down. Some of your side would be exposed given how tall the Tiger is, but it’d be a very small amount and you’d have clear fields of fire. There’s also just driving into the middle of the field and seeing what happens.

>Go parallel to the main road. (Green)

“Max, put us in the dip, left of the main road,” you order.

“How close do you want to be?” He asks as you move forward. “If we’re too far, Ruby won’t be able to fire at anything worth hitting but if we’re too close, the side of the tank will be exposed.”

“On the slope close to the road,” you reply. “It’s worth that small risk to be able to shoot.”

“Sure,” he grunts.

Frederick rumbles across the bridge. You feel a flash of hesitation as he does and you’re treated to a split second of another Tiger collapsing a bridge underneath it. Thankfully, Ooarai’s bridges have been reinforced for tanks so you’re able to move over with ease.

Max moves forward and swerves off the road. There’s a slight thud as you go from tarmac to grass, but Frederick doesn’t slow down. You eyeball the distance, coordinating with Max to make sure you follow the road at the right distance. When you’re confident that he’s following the right line you rotate the turret so it’s facing out into the field.

It’s not a second too soon. As you’re looking out into the fields, you see Maho round the corner of one of the forests.

“Ruby! Target! 1200 meters away!” You say, pointing the turret in Maho’s general direction. Maho seems to respond less than a second after you, angling her tank towards you.

“I see it!” Ruby announces.

“Max! Kill the movement!”

He complies, and Fredrick shudders to a halt. Ruby takes a second to aim.

“On the way!” She fires and Maho responds a moment later. Your shell strikes her front glacis and explodes but doesn’t seem to do any damage. Her shell similarly hits your turret front and once the dust settles, you see no lasting damage.

If we're not able to penetrate with a 1 when she uses Mahlzeit, it becomes risky to just shoot at her and hope for the best. If we can hold her in place by removing her ability to move, and then position ourselves so that she isn't angled against our shot, we should be able to penetrate. Which also makes the order of shooting before moving important.

“Ruby! Aim for the tracks! We need her immobile!” You order. “Max, the second she’s done I want us up and over the road, into the trees east of us, understood?”

“Got it, Fritz.,” Max replies. You fiddle with the FG1250 for a moment and you’re rewarded with a beep indicating you’ve set it to omnipotence mode. It’ll begin feeding Leo information he can relay which gives him more to do that occasionally shoot his machine gun.

“On the way!” Ruby shouts as she taps the trigger. The gun barks a moment later and the shell zips towards the enemy Tiger. It hits and detonates with a solid bang. You reckon it did some damage.

“Now Max!” You say. He turns the tank towards the road in preparation of crossing.

“Moving now,” he says. Then Maho strikes back.

You hear the bark of an eighty eight and a moment later, you feel an eighty eight as a shell slams into the front of your tank, inches away from Leo’s machine gun. You hear him curse and fall over due to the impact over the intercom, but it continues, meaning he’s fine.

Frederick continues moving, powering over the road and towards the woods. There’s scattered machine gun fire from their coax, but nothing serious, especially since they’re opening the range by reversing. >Reverse wide towards the main road so you can see around the trees. (Yellow)
>Ready Smoke Grenades if Maho is encountered before we reach the road cover
>Ready Frenzy

“Max, rotate anti-clockwise,” you order. To his credit, he doesn’t question the odd command and immediately gets to it. You let Frederick turn for a moment before stopping him. “Halt! Move us back towards the main road. Ruby, we should be able to get you an angle and once we do, I want you and Axel to hit them with everything we’ve got.”

“We got it!” Ruby confirms for both of them. You can hear Axel dragging extra shells out of the rack in anticipation.

Frederick slowly moves backwards, and more and more of the field slowly comes into view. Ruby moves the turret slightly so she can lock on target better and you scan the horizon, looking for the familiar Tiger silhouette.

You move back for a solid minute and you’re almost over the road before you spot her.

“Ruby!” You call, getting your gunner’s attention. “Kilometre and a half! Northeast! Can you see them?”

“I see them!” She replies. As she’s adjusting her aim to take a moment to look at Maho’s tank. It obviously took damage from the hit it took whereas Frederick thankfully didn’t.

“Fritz?” Ruby asks.

“Go for it.”

“On the way!”

The first shot seems to catch her flat-footed. You watch it sail through the air and hit her squarely on the turret face. Unfortunately, all it seems to do is wake her up and a second later, she fires a shot back. It arcs through the air and hits inches from the place it did last time. Her gunner is consistent if nothing else.

“On the way!”

A second shot rings out. This one looks better, hitting and detonating against her front plate as she attempts to manouver. The third unfortunately goes wide.

“Two out of three,” you say for Ruby’s benefit. You then peer down at where Maho’s shot hit you.

>Skill doesn’t work and Maho is knocked out for no damage

There’s no damage, thankfully.

“Max! Begin moving south, away from Maho while Axel and Ruby recover!” You order. Max starts to move, and you reach for the smoke, but Ruby interrupts you.

“Uh, Fritz? That’s probably not necessary,” Ruby says. “Have a look.”

You grab your binoculars and refocus on Maho. Her tank hasn’t moved, and there’s a white flag sticking out of the top. You can make out the shape of her and her crew slowly disembarking the tank.

“The match is over! All tanks cease operation!” The announcement comes over the radio a moment later.

“You heard the lady,” you say with a sigh. “Good job everyone.”

“Still undefeated!” Ruby whoops from her place in the turret.

“It was closer than last time,” Leo observes. “Frederick sure can take a hit though.”

“Better than the Nishizumi’s tank could,” Max observes drily.

“I’m going to head over to say hello,” you say. You climb up and out of the tank. Most of your team decided to stay behind, but Ruby climbs up and out to come with you.

It’s a short walk to Maho where she’s already out, inspecting her tank.

“It seems I am very unlucky when it comes to facing you,” Maho says as you approach. “Regardless, that was enjoyable.”

“I’m glad it was, Maho,” you reply. You hold out a hand which she takes and shakes. She then pulls you in for a hug which you return.

Maho lets go then turns to your gunner. “You did well to hit the shots you did, well done.”

“Oh, thank you!” Ruby replies. “Your gunner did well too! She was hitting just as many as I was!”

“She has three years more experience than you, that is to be expected,” Maho replies. “I won’t insult you by offering you a place at Black Forest, but my mother might try it. Or she might not, she’s quite fond of the five of you by now.”

“Well thanks for giving us the heads up, Maho,”

>“You never did tell me what you’re doing for Oktoberfest.”

“I did,” she replies. “You probably weren’t listening properly.”

“I was,” you insist. “You just didn’t tell me anything of value.”

“You might not have heard me properly because of your phone, or mine. It’s pretty old,” Maho shrugs. You know that’s untrue, not least because the Nishizumi family is rich. You roll your eyes, but otherwise don’t challenge her. “To answer your question, we’ve planned a little festival for the last weekend. Food, entertainment, drink. Everything that you would expect to find.”

“Drink?” You ask. “By that do you mean-”

“Non-alcoholic,” she replies, smiling as you visibly deflate. “Unfortunately, the majority of Black Forest’s residents are underage and what can be on display reflects that since we’re still held to Japanese laws.”

“A pity, that’s half the fun.”

Maho shrugs as if to say what can you do?.

“I’ll be there though, as will Erika. I’m sure my crew will too.” You gesture to Ruby nearby who’s in animated conversation with a member of Maho’s crew.

“And we’ll be happy to have you.”

>Papers aren’t going anywhere. Take the rest of the day to relax.

You chat with Maho a little longer before she needs to leave to attend to her tank. The rest of your crew has already left with Frederick, meaning you and Ruby need to catch a lift back. Thankfully, one of the judges is able to give you a lift in their jeep and you’re back on the schoolship in no time.

“So what’s next for you?” You ask your gunner as the two of you meander across the ship.

“I dunno,” she replies. “I might see if Hana and or Anglerfish team are free. If they ain’t I might call home, see how everyone is keeping up. I’m vaguely aware of exams coming up, but I’d prefer to worry about those when we get to them.”

>Calling home is a good idea, do it yourself.

“Calling home is a good idea,” you say. “I think I’ll do that.”

“Say hi to your parents for me then, okay?”

“Sure thing,” you promise.

“Thanks, see ya round,” she punches your arm lightly then splits off from you, heading in a different direction. You head back to your apartment to make the call. Unfortunately, Erika isn’t around so she can’t sit in, but you take a seat and video call your mother anyway.

The phone rings for a couple of seconds before she picks up.

“Fritz, what a pleasant surprise,” she says. The camera focuses on her and you can see a small smile on her face. “Congratulations on your win earlier today, your father and I were watching it live. You just missed him actually, I sent him on a shopping run.”

“Thank you, mom. It was a tough one, I’ll tell you that much.”

“I’ll say, I’m not an expert in these things but I could see the way the two of you were throwing shots back and forth. I got a call from your aunt shouting about how great her baby girl is.”

“Ruby is pretty good, she said hi to you and dad by the way.”

“And say hello back for me,” she replies. “Now how are you and your sister doing? Has she finally gotten that girl she was after? Rosie?”

“Rosehip,” you correct. “Not yet. Erika is headstrong in everything apart from this and Rosehip is in denial. I offered to lock the two of them in a tank together, but Erika didn’t like that idea.”

“They just need some time,” your mother offers. “I remember when your father asked me out, it took him a long time.”

“Really?”

“Well, a long time to be successful. I thought he was some idiot paratrooper or whatever, blew him off thrice before I said yes.”

“Did he change your mind?”

“Well, I didn’t think he was an idiot paratrooper anymore. I thought he was an idiot armoured infantryman.”

You let out a snort at that, and you see an uncharacteristically large smile on your mother’s face.

“That’s enough about me though, what have you been up to? Aside from Tankery.”

“I’ve been pretty busy,” you reply with a small smirk.

“Oh?” Your mother replies with an arched eyebrow. “Pray, do tell.”

>Tell her about your foray into politics

“Well, last week I had a little outing into politics. I was invited to a meeting of the Ooarai town council before a vote by the Student Council President. Her name is Anzu, one of Yuzu’s colleagues and her friend. She wanted me there in case she needed an expert on Tankery.”

“And did she need an expert?”

“Well, Anzu was there to argue for them to increase the funding they give to Ooarai and I managed to make a solid point about the economic benefits of Tankery.”

“And did it work?”

“Well, a critic spoke up in favour of it after I spoke to him so…”

“My little politician,” she jokes. “Does this mean you might be interested in-”

“Not a chance,” you cut her off. She sighs and shakes her head, grumbling something about you being like your father.

>Tell her about some of your dates with Yuzu.

“Speaking of Yuzu, we went on a couple of dates since we last talked.”

“As you should,” she says, nodding approvingly. “Like what? Tell me about one.”

“Well, there was this nice restaurant she took me to. Instead of one or two dishes, they give you a bunch of super small courses. Something about the first few bites being the best. It was in a nice place too. Up in the mountains and we were outside in a garden.”

“Did you take any pictures?”

“One or two,” you reply. “I have some of Erika and Rosehip too, some others of interesting stuff that’s happened.”

“Send them,” your mother orders. You promptly do so.

“I’ll check them afterwards,” she promises. “You’ve been pretty busy.”

>Tell her about your treasure hunt.

“I’ve also been treasure hunting. The history club and I went on an expedition into the bowels of Ooarai and we found some gold coins.” You reach over to the bag on your table and show one to the camera. “We’re planning to go in and see if we can find anything else.”

“I see,” she’s frowning, that’s not good. “Would you be willing to send a couple over? For an expert to look at?”

“We want to do this in-house,” you say. “It’s our discovery.”

“Hmm,” she frowns again before sighing and nodding. “Stuff like treasure hunts that could potentially involve valuables… be careful who you tell about it, ok? Keeping it in-house is smart. I’d say hand it over to experts, but you’re my son, so I know you won’t.”

“We’ll be careful,” you promise.

“Good, tell your sister to call me and tell Yuzu I said hello,” she says. “As far as I know, there’s an end of term break at the end of the month for you guys. I won’t push, but I’d like to see my kids.”

“Why not come over to Japan?”

“Maybe,” she concedes. “Anyways, I won’t keep you any longer. I love you, Fritz.”

“Love you too, mom.”

She winks at you before ending the call.

>Burn some steam off on the court with the Volleyball club.

You stay seated for as long as it takes to put away the gold. You head over to your bedroom and quickly change into some sports clothes. Duck team probably has free time right now, and you know exactly where they’ll be.

You grab the essentials and head out. It’s a short walk to the main school building, but you don’t bother going in. Instead you go around and behind it towards the sports centre. The lights are still on, and you know exactly which group is most likely to be responsible.

You head into the sports centre and walk to the hall. Duck team are all present, all four of them hanging upside down from a handle attached to the basketball hoop.

“Commander Hermann!” Noriko cries when she sees you. She straightens her legs and begins falling. She flips a couple times before landing on her feet.

“How’s it going?”

“Well,” you reply. “I wanted to play some volleyball, and I was hoping you could help.”

“We sure can help with that!” Noriko replies. “Ladies?”

The other three drop from the handles with varying degrees of grace. All of them race to the courts. Teams are quickly made, and you end up alone with Noriko against the other three.

The group breaks out into warm up stretches and since you have no real idea, you follow Noriko’s lead.

>Ask her about the tournament.

“So, Noriko,” you say as you follow her into an upwards stretch. “How has that tournament been going? You mentioned it to me a while back, but I never got around to asking about it again.”

“It’s going well, Commander!” Noriko replies as she continues to stretch. “We’re past the groups and the qualifiers and about half the tournament itself. We’re at the quarter finals right now, I think?”

“Really? Congratulations,” you reply. She decides that the stretching is done, and the warmup quickly begins. Warmup for them being normal pace for anyone else.

“Save the congratulations for when we win!” Noriko grunts between returns. “There’s some familiar names up there with us. Black Forest has a volleyball club for example.”

“They do, do they? As good as their Sensha-Do team?”

“Probably not,” Noriko says. “I don’t see anyone really matching us, even if there’s only four of us.”

“Well, quantity has a quality of its own,” you reply.

“True,” Noriko admits. “But we’re built different.”

“Built different?” You echo with a grunt. The pace of the game is starting to pick up as the girls finish warming up. You’re pushed forward to cover the front of the court.

“Yeah, we have more GUTS! Than anyone else this side of Japan!” She punctuates that by jumping so high that she’s at eye level with you to hit the ball back.

“Well either way, let the club know when your matches are, I’m sure some of the others will want to see them.

“Sure,” she grunts. The game is picking up even more so the two of you are forced to turn all your attention to it.

You don’t do as well as the club. While you’re tall enough to make up for most of your skill deficiencies it’s still not enough to compete. You score the odd point or two, but the girls are running rings around you, literally and metaphorically. You do however find a niche standing next to the net and slowing down the ball for Noriko. She doesn’t particularly need the help, but it allows her to take a second more to aim her shots which gives the other three a workout.

You stay with the volleyball club a little longer as they go through their warm down. You spend it mostly sat down catching your breath.

“You did well, Commander!” Akebi cheers. “If you come more regularly then you might get close to our level!”

“Close to your level, huh? That’s probably enough to go professional.”

“It would be,” Shinobu states.

“I’ll keep it in mind, but I think my path’s already set,” you laugh.

>Let it slide today so you can see off the leaving schools.

You bid them a good night and leave for your apartment. As you walk back, you dial Miho.

“Hey, Fritz! What’s up?”

“Hi Miho, I was thinking we let everyone off of practice tomorrow morning. The other schoolships are leaving, so it’d give everyone a chance to see the other schools off.”

“That means I can see off Big Sis! Great idea, Fritz!” You can hear some shuffling on the other end. “I’ll text everyone and let them know they have the morning off. God knows most of them can use it after all we’ve done over the last couple weeks.”

“Yeah, it takes its toll, doesn’t it?”

“Mhm, thankfully there won’t be any more tank battles till the winter cup begins in a month! Or, maybe not thankfully, I know how much you enjoy it.”

“Please, I’m going to enjoy the break too,” you say.

“Well, if you get bored, I always know where to find a match or two,” Miho says.

“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.”

You say goodbye to Miho and a minute later you receive the text. With that sorted, you head for home.

>Say goodbye to someone leaving. (Erika)

You decide to see off the Black Forest lot. More specifically, Erika and apologise again for being a dick.

“Wish me luck, Otto,” you say as you give him a pet. You quickly have some breakfast and put some out for him before heading out.

You text Erika and ask her if she’s nearby and able to talk. She replies exactly a minute later, saying she can meet you at a small café close to port. That’s fine by you, and you set out.

You arrive fifteen minutes later. It’s a small place, with few outside tables and even fewer inside. Erika is sitting at one of the outside tables, dressed casually.

“Fritz,” she greets you as sit.

“Erika,” you reply, with a nod. “Glad you could make time to see me.”

She grunts in response and flags down a nearby server. She orders a small platter of pastries which arrives pretty quickly.

“You wanted to talk right?”

“Right,” you nod. “I wanted to apologise again, for being a dick to you during the match. It was too far, especially against a friend. It’s not worth winning if that’s how I do it.”

“You didn’t win,” Erika points out.

“I know,” you reply.

“I know you know, I just wanted to point it out,” she says with a small smirk. “I respect you, Fritz. You’ve fought well against me and alongside me. I just didn’t expect shit like that you know?”

“I get that, and I’m sorry,” you say again.

“Apology accepted,” Erika says, waving you off. “I’m more concered that someone could try to use it to hurt you. Instructor Nishizumi has been carving the Federation up, but you never know. It also probably helped me more than it helped you.”

“How?” You ask. She looks positively smug now.

“Let’s just say that tanks are pretty loud, particularly, machinegun and shellfire. It’s so loud that it can be heard through a radio if you listen carefully. Now, the ship’s about to cast off, you want to come say goodbye to the others?”

>“Sure, my stop’s in the same direction.”

>“Wait, wait. Can you go over that again? The radio bit?”

“I could,” Erika says. “But I won’t.”

“What? Why not?”

“Because you should be able to figure it out yourself.”

You squint at her. “I said I was sorry.”

“And I’ve forgiven you,” she replies.

“But you’re probably still angry right?”

Erika doesn’t say anything, taking a sip from a cup of coffee, basically confirming she still is.

“Fine, I won’t push it,” you reply. “Whenever you’ve cooled down, I’d like to know if it isn’t too much trouble.”

“I’ll note it down,” she says. “Now, are you coming?”

>“Sure, my stop’s in the same direction.”

Erika stands, pulling out her wallet.

“Let me,” you say, stopping her from pulling out any money. “As an apology.”

She puts her wallet away and you leave enough on the table to cover it. With everything paid for, the two of you walk towards the docks.

It’s a short walk back, and you can see students of all schools mustering, ready to leave.

“Koume and the Captain said they’d wait for me before they went aboard,” Erika says, scanning the crowd. Her job is made slightly harder by it being split fifty-fifty between those in uniform and those out of it.

“There,” you say, spotting a familiar head of hair. Erika follows your gaze and spots Koume.

The two of you walk over, and it’s only a moment before she notices you.

“Fritz!” Koume cheers. She launches herself forward into a hug which you gladly accept. She notices Erika next to you. “Out on a date, huh?”

“I’m sure you would, you big lug,” Koume replies, rolling her eyes. You motion to pick her up and she darts back out of the way. “Doesn’t mean I’ll let you.”

“A date with me that bad a thought,” Erika jokes. “Did I forget to shower or something?”

“No, it’s just Fritz being a drama queen,” Koume replies. “There are people that would cut off their arm to date you.”

“Erika is that popular?”

“Downside of being a relatively public figure,” she grumbles. “I have to chase off the odd weirdo or two every so often.”

“You probably have a groupie or two, Fritz,” Koume suggests.

“Well I suppose it’s not impossible,” you muse. You’re reminded of the two girls who were fans of Azusa.

The Black Forest girls slowly begin to board their schoolship.

“That’s our cue!” Koume says, giving you another hug.

“Is Maho not coming?”

“Maho would prefer not to be left behind, so she is.”

“Speak of the devil,” you say as you turn to face her.

“So, you’ll be coming on the weekend?”

“Most likely,” you nod. “I know my crew and Erika will and I see no reason not to.”

“It’ll be great! It’s just like Germany!” Koume exclaims.

“All the more reason to go then.”

You see the three of them off and swiftly make your way on board Ooarai for lessons.

>Arrange the next expedition with the history club.

At lunch, you head for the classroom that the history club uses as a hangout.

“Hey girls,” you greet them as you enter. “Free to talk about our little project?”

“Sure we are!” Caesar replies. “You want to set a time?”

>Friday evening, you can take your time and recover during the day.

“I was thinking Friday evening. Since it’s Saturday the next day we can take our time since there’s no school, it doesn’t waste the entire weekend on it either.”

“That’s a shame, I wanted to go as soon as possible,” Erwin sighs.

“If Friday is the earliest convenient time, doesn’t that make it as soon as possible?” Oryou muses.

“Well yes, but I wanted to go earlier.”

“We could go earlier, but we’d get what four hours max before we need to wrap things up? That’s basically travel time and five minutes,” Caesar explains.

“I understand that,” Erwin replies. “It’s just I can’t stand the wait.”

“It’s like the day before a big match.”

“The winter before the Ardennes,” Erwin nods.

“Well good things come to those who wait right?” You say. “If what we found last time is any indication, then this will definitely be worth it.”

That evening when you head into practice, you’re ambush by Anzu who drags you into the lounge. Miho, Azusa and the rest of the council are already there.

“Ladies and Gentleman, we have a movie to make,” Anzu announces, “and it’s going to be a tank movie.”

“This is for the culture festival?” Azusa asks.

“That’s right! We’ve been invited to make a movie for it and every single movie so far has been a tank one so that’s what I need you guys for!”

“You want us to make a movie?”

“Well, we’re mostly going to be acting in it,” Anzu explains. “We have a film club that isn’t half bad. We only cut their budget in half!”

“Well, if we want a movie, then we need a plot and all that, right? How about we ask the team to come up with ideas and we can pick the best.”

“Sure,” Anzu shrugs, “I’m not the most creative person in the world so I don’t mind outsourcing that stuff. All the people here, surely one or two will have good ideas, right?”

“That’s the thought,” you nod.

“That’s fine by me,” Miho adds. “I’ve never shot a movie before!”

“You probably won’t be shooting it – the film club guard their cameras pretty jealously, but I could see you starring in it. Miho has a main girl vibe to her, don’t you think?”

“Definitely.”
“Agreed.”

You smirk as Miho tries and fails to dissuade the council.

“I’m going to check on the tanks!” Miho announces, abruptly rising from her seat. “I’ll put out a message about the movie ideas too!”

“You trying to scare her off?” You ask Anzu as you watch Miho scurry off.

“Nah, I’m just teasing,” she says.

>Have a deeper look into the culture festival.
>Get to know the film club if possible

“Sure. Do you know where I can find the film club?”

“Eh?” Anzu checks her watch. “Now? They’ll probably be watching a movie at this time. Try the cafeteria.”

“Alright, thanks, Prez,” you say as you stand.

“Anytime, Fritz,” she replies with a lazy wave.

You leave the warehouse and make your way to the cafeteria. It’s pretty much abandoned, but in the corner you can see three girls sitting around one of the larger wall mounted screens. An old movie you don’t recognise is playing, it looks to be near the end, but you don’t really know.

>Wait till it’s over then ask.

You decide to just wait till it’s over. You stand a small way back and watch the movie too as you wait. As far as you can tell, it’s about a journalist trying to figure out a mystery of some kind. It’s probably more interesting than that, but you can’t tell from what little you’ve seen.

Thankfully, it doesn’t take long and after about fifteen minutes the credits start to roll. One of the girls flicks a light switch.

“It’s cool and all, but I don’t see what all the hype’s about… it’s sorta generic?”

“Generic?” Another one replies in what is the worst fake French accent you’ve ever heard. Japanese sounds horrible in it. “Mon Ami, zis is ze film zat inspired modern cinema! And you call it generic!”

“I preferred Venom…”

“You!”

“Easy, easy,” another girl appears between the two arguing ones. “We have a visitor.”

All three look at you in unison.

“Kadotani’s lapdog… Tell ze President she is cutting our funding no further zan she already has! We won’t allow it!”

“At worst I suppose I’d be some sort of errand dog – a golden retriever maybe?” You reply. “I’m not here to cut your funding though, I’m here on behalf of the Sensha-Do club. I assume you know who I am?”

“Ou doesn’t, misteur ‘ermann,” the pseudo-French on replies. “I am Eiga. This is Yusa and Kuta. Now what do you want?”

“A pleasure,” you say nodding to the girls. “The Saunders culture festival is coming up. We need your help to film a movie for it.”

Ze culture festival!? How did we- unimportant. I will help and ou will have ze backing of my club, but I want full creative control!”

“Aside from an A-class director and a crack camera team?” She asks. “We also have professional cameras, none of that cheap stuff.”

“Officially we don’t have those,” Yusa adds. “If the President asks they’re private property.”

“I won’t tell her unless she asks, but it’s not the smartest idea to lie to her about money. She likes to stay on top of that.”

“First our budget, now our cameras,” Kura sighs.

“Nothing will happen to your cameras,” you reply. “Do you have any proof that you’re good at what you do? Or of the quality of your equipment.”

“We have movies we’ve shot ourselves,” Yusa says. “None of them with us, but we can bring them to any meeting.”

“And do they justify full creative control?”

“Yes,” Eiga answers immediately.

“Mhm.”
“Sure.”

“Your friends don’t sound as enthusiastic as you,” you say.

“We’re not friends,” Yusa says.

“More like very close acquaintances who share a hobby,” Eiga adds.

“Right,” you sigh, you feel a headache starting to form. “So you can’t prove why you’re so great to me right now, but you all say you’re great at what you do.”

“And we’re not friends,” Kuta adds softly.

“But you’re very close.”

“Yes,” all three of them answer simultaneously.

“We also have a great camera.”

“You’ve mentioned,” you say, sighing again.

“And bring your home movies and all that, I’m sure they’ll go a long way to making your case with the others and myself.”

“Of course we will! We’ll prove to you our prowess as a club! We’ll show ourselves plenty worthy to direct for the Saunders Culture festival!”

“And be the camera crew for!” Yusa adds.

“There are more of us by the way,” Kuta adds. “Enough to actually make movie, on top of filming it.”

“Like special effects and editing?”

“Mhm,” Kuta nods. “We have a costumes department too, but that’s just sort of subcontracting to the art department.”

“How many more?” You ask.

“About two dozen,” Kuta says softly.

“And I’m in charge of them!” Eiga intervenes. You see Yusa roll her eyes at that.

“Eiga directs, but in charge is a bit of a stretch.”

“You should’ve led your pitch with the manpower you have behind you,” you say. You check your watch and see it’s getting late. “I’m going to take my leave today, but come to the warehouse tomorrow ready to pitch yourself to the people in charge.”

“Yes, yes!” Eiga dismisses you and the three of them break out into hushed conversation. You leave them to it, and head back to your apartment.

Everything is as you left it when you return. Otto shows signs of having made his way out and about given he smells like a woman’s perfume.

“Who have you been hanging out with?” You ask the cat. He just looks at you.

>Tell the leadership what you think of the club. Good for resources but to be kept on a firm leash
>See if any good ideas have come in yet.

That morning, you get a slight surprise. Erika appears at your door slightly haggard.

“Hello,” you say bemusedly as your sister stumbles in and onto your table.

“I’ve been thinking about the movie idea!” She says as you pour her a cup of coffee. After a moment’s thought, you give her your toast as well and put some more in for yourself.

“Go on then,” you say as you cook.

“I think that we borrow a KV-2 and shoot the curse of Tankenstein! Great idea, right?”

“Sure is, good job,” you reply.

After both of you have eaten, you head to the warehouse. It appears Miho has designated you as the drop off point, and you’re handed what amounts to a small stack of papers in ideas. Eiga and the film squad aren’t here yet so you take a moment to sort through the papers. Of the ideas, you can see a few good ones.

The Curse of Tankenstein - Action/Horror movie about ‘Tankenstein’.
Ooarai Drift – Racing movie set in the streets of Ooarai.
Attack of the Giant Arraippe – Tank vs Kaiju movie.
Top tank – Top gun but with tanks. Still has beach volleyball.

“Looking through the ideas, huh?” Miho asks as you approach. “Any good ones?”

“A couple,” you reply.

“The film club is here, are you busy with these or do you want to sit in with us?”

“I’ll come in with you,” you pick up the suggestions and walk with her. You head into the lounge. The Student Council is there and Azusa is sitting with the.

“Fritz,” Anzu greets you.

“Prez,” you reply as you give Yuzu a hug.

“What are your thoughts on the film club?”

>“They have good resources behind them, but I think they need to be kept on a leash.”

“So, she’s not worth listening too?”

“Not exactly, more she’s the garnish and the others are the meat if you get what I’m saying.”

“Ahhh, that makes more sense,” Miho nods. “Shall we head out and wait for them?”

The two of you head out, and after a few minutes you see Eiga and her entourage arrive. She scans the warehouse, sees you and marches over.

“Mister Hermann. Who am I talking to today?”

“Follow us,” you say. You and Miho turn to walk towards the lounge and the three of them follow you. The lounge has been turned into an impromptu briefing room with the film club at one end and the rest of you at the other. You take a seat next to Yuzu and listen.

“Ladies and Gentleman, I’ll keep this brief. You need to film a great movie, and we’ve done that before. You let me direct, and I’ll have a masterpiece for you, ready for the culture festival, and trust me – there’s no way I’d screw up a movie for the second- er, third largest amateur film event in Japan.”

“You kept it too brief!” Yusa hisses. “Sorry about her. We like to think we’re pretty good at what we do. We have a full film crew and we’ve made movies before. I have a couple with us, but there isn’t really time to show them all to you.”

She slides a USB stick across the table. “In case you want to watch them later. Last year we were nominated for best amateur director in Japan and the year before that we actually won best cinematography and best special effects.”

Any questions?

>“What do you guys get out of this?”

“We want our names front and centre in the credits!” Eiga declares.

“We’d also like our funding back, please,” Yusa says. “We can’t really make another proper movie this year on what we have.”

“Your funding last year was as much as the next seven clubs combined,” Anzu frowns. “Even at half that, you’re still the second biggest club related expense on the ship.”

“Because we get results!” Yusa snaps back. She takes a second to compose herself before continuing. “The other clubs exist for fun or because they have to, but we’re good at what we do. The only other club that can say something similar is this one.”

“The Sensha-Do club is the biggest single expense,” Kuta says softly.

“A worthwhile investment,” Anzu replies, waving off the criticism. “Despite our recent good fortune, we’re still not exactly flush with cash.”

“So, find it or find another way to do it,” Eiga shrugs. “We both know that this is the cheapest way to do it, but you’re welcome to look elsewhere for a full camera crew, backend studio, top tier director.”

Anzu’s face is dangerously neutral and from the look on Eiga’s you can tell she has Anzu where she wants her.

“I’ll have an answer for you by the end of lunch,” Anzu says, standing. “Koyama, Kawashima. Let’s go.”

Yuzu and Momo hastily follow her out of the room, leaving you, Miho and Azusa with the film club.

>“What kind of movies have you guys made?”

“All of them,” Eiga replies. That earns her another elbow from Yusa.

“We’re pretty good at dramas, but we’ve done action and horror before,” Yusa says. “We’re best at drama, but I don’t think we’ll be filming a love story here.”

>Share the list of movie ideas with the film club

“Interesting,” you nod. “Well, I have a list of some ideas we’ve come up with for the movie.”

“Unacceptable! I asked for fu-”

Eiga is cut off when she’s elbowed in the ribs again, this time by Kuta.

“What my associate is saying, is a lot of movie ideas that sound good can be too hard to do in practice,” Kuta explains/covers for Eiga.

The three of you pretend to accept the explaination and you pass the sheets of paper with the proposals around.

“Well, none of them are unworkable,” Yusa says, after a moment of looking at them. “That’s a good start.”

“Which one looks best to you guys?” Miho asks.

They look between each other in silent conversation before Eiga responds.

“The curse of Tankenstein is our pick, there’s more room for critical acclaim in a horror movie.”

“That’s not to say that the others are bad though,” Yusa adds. “Action is always fun, and given the Saunders culture festival isn’t really a critic judged event, action could be good.”

“Three quarters of the entries every year are action,” Kuta says softly. “It’s oversaturated.”

“Yet it’s always an action movie that wins,” Yusa argues back.

“So it’s a question of whether action is just preferred or there’s never been anything else submitted that could win?” Azusa asks.

“Yeah! I don’t know much about Saunders, but they seem like action movie people,” Yusa says. Her phone starts to beep and she curses as she switches it off.

“I’m sorry, there’s things we need to do before lessons. Would you mind if we cut it here?”

“By all means,” Miho replies. The three film club members file out, leaving you, Miho and Azusa behind.

“Commander Hermann, which one do you like the most?” Asusa asks.

>Ooarai Drift

“I’m quite partial to a good racing movie,” you say, holding the proposal for Ooarai drift.

“Like Initial D kind of racing or Fast and Furious with tanks?” Azusa asks.

“It’s sort of light on the details,” Miho replies, looking at it. “The people who suggested it have talked a lot about the racing, but not much about any tank fights.”

“’The people’, huh? You mean Leopon team?”

“Definitely Leopon team,” Miho nods. “Who else would suggest tank racing? That’s also ignoring the fact that it’s in Nakajima’s handwriting.”

You all hear your teammates starting to leave for lessons.

“Shall we pick this up in the evening?” Miho suggests. “We can get the council again and try to create a plot, a script, all that.”

“If we’re going to be doing that, we should get the film club involved as well,” Azusa suggests.

“Good idea,” you say as you stand. “I’ll let them know.”

At lunch, your plan to talk to the film club is interrupted by a summons from the council. You send a text to Miho asking her to handle the film club, then head to the council room.

“You called?” You ask as you enter. Anzu waves you over to, her desk where she, Yuzu and Momo are all sat looking serious. The only levity is Otto who’s attacking one of Anzu’s twintails.

“We have no money, Fritz,” Anzu sighs. “I’ve done everything I can this year, but we’re still in the red. We literally cannot afford to raise the film club budget a tiny bit.”

“What about the money I won?” You ask.

“Most of it has been funnelled into the Sensha-Do budget for the rest of the year, but some is being used for the other clubs.”

“The money from Ooarai city?”

“Starts next year,” Yuzu sighs.

“Explain the problem to them?”

“We’ve dealt with Eiga before,” Momo says succinctly.

“Our options boil down to cut money from the Sensha-Do club, say no and find another way to make it, or cut half the extra curriculars for the rest of the year and deal with a student protest. I’d promise more money next year, but I won’t be in charge then.” Anzu throws up her arms and sighs. Amusingly she looks more stressed than she did when the school was under threat of closure.

>“If we’re talking about cutting Sensha-Do funding, maybe Miho should be here.”
>“Is there anyway we can win more?”

“Maybe,” Anzu murmurs. She shifts Otto from the desk to her lap and considers it for a moment.

“Kawashima! Find Commander Nishizumi and bring her here.”

“Right away, President!”

“She’s probably with the film club right now!” You call after her.

You take a seat offered to you by Yuzu who pulls up a few more so you’ll all be able to sit around the President’s desk when Miho returns.

It takes a few minutes, but Momo finds Miho and retrieves her. The two quickly take their seats.

“So, what’s the problem?” Miho asks.

“Basically, we’re out of money, the rest of our discretionary budget for the year is allocated, including everything we’ve been able to make ourselves.” She gestures in your direction as she says that last bit. “We’d easily be able to ride out the rest of the year, but to make this movie we need more.”

“And I’m here…”

“In case we need to cut the Sensha-Do budget and because you might know how to avoid that.”

“I see,” Miho says, nodding. She’s silent for a moment before she speaks. “Well, I think cutting our budget would be a bad idea given we’re the only ones making profit. That said, it might be worth dipping into it to make the movie since we can make it back.”

“How?” Anzu asks.

“The week of the culture festival, they’re running an ‘Unlimited class-lite’. It’s the same place they held the Tankathlon finals at, actually. The prize money should be enough to cover the difference.”

“Is it another couple million?” You ask.

“Less than that,” Miho replies with a giggle. “But more than enough to fund a high school movie. Now that I think about it, what happened to the money Fritz won?”

“About half of it went into your budget,” Yuzu says. “The other half was split between giving a slight boost to other clubs, reviving old ones and general improvements to the school building.”

>“Do you know any more about the rules, Miho?”

“I think they’re basically identical to the Unlimited class in America,” she replies. “You can enter more than one tank per school – maybe we go for first and second!”

“Sounds like a good idea,” you nod. “What about time limits? Drone usage? Stuff like that?”

“Extra equipment is the same as the Unlimited class,” she says. “I think it’s a bit less than a day though since there’s less tanks.”

“Alright,” you nod. You turn to the council.

>“What happens if we lose?”

“In the short term nothing,” Yuzu replies. “If that happens, then we probably recut funding to the film club after the filming is done and we have enough to make it to Christmas.”

“Are there any Sensha-Do events after Christmas?” You ask.

“Nothing planned as far as I know,” Miho says.

“It’d be two months without a club though,” Anzu frowns. “Wouldn’t be great for next year.”

“But would the club survive?” You ask. “Will anything happen to the school?”

“The school is pretty much a hundred percent safe,” Momo replies. “As for the club, probably? There’s an end of year holiday in March anyway, so everyone would be rusty after the break.”

“So, the only thing we’re risking is a couple months without the club at a time when there’s no events planned to take place?” Miho asks.

“Oh! There was that American duelling thingy, but that’s it,” Yuzu adds.

>“Sounds to me like there’s no downsides.”

>“Sounds to me like there’s no downsides.”

“Well, very few,” Yuzu says.

“Same thing,” you shrug, getting a smile and an eyeroll from her.

“Nishizumi? Your thoughts?” Anzu asks.

“Well, I really do want to make a movie…and even if we don’t win, we’ll have done a lot of Sensha-Do anyways.”

“Alright,” Anzu nods. “Alright. Kawashima let the film club know they’ll get the rest of their funding. Koyama enter us into this tournament. As many of us as possible.”

“Yes, President!”
“Sure, Prez.”

The two of them scurry off to work on their assigned tasks. Anzu collapses back into her chair and sighs. “I thought I was done with this stuff.”

“Couldn’t you just not make the movie then?” You ask. “It’d mean that we’re fine for the year right?”

“Barring a typhoon,” she nods. “To answer your question, this is Ooarai’s first invite to the big leagues, Fritz. We can’t just blow something like this off!”

“Kay probably wouldn’t mind or care,” Miho chips in.

“It’s not just about Kay, Miho,” Anzu replies. “It’s about Saunders University High School. It’s about St Gloriana’s Girls College. It’s about Black Forest Girls Academy.”

“The institution?” You offer.

“Exactly! The institution!” Anzu nods. “The institution is bigger than any person and we need to start thinking about those now! We’re in the big girls’ league and we have to act like it.”

>“I guess you’d be a structuralist historian then.”

“A what?” Anzu seems to bluescreen at that. Miho on the other hand seems to get the joke.

“Someone who sees history as being less about the individual and more about the grand forces that shape it,” Miho explains.

“Ah,” Anzu makes a noise of understanding. “No, I think that history is driven by the great men and women who push it forward.”

“Odd thing to say for someone so concered about institutions,” you tease.

“Those are still important!”

“So, she’s somewhere in the middle,” Miho says. “It’s good to have nuance when it comes to dealing with these things.”

“Sure, nuance,” Anzu replies, rolling her eyes.

>“I think you’ve been working too hard.”

“I have people to do the working,” she says, dismissively, gesturing to recently returned Yuzu and Momo. “I do the thinking.”

“Well then you’ve been thinking too hard. You should take a break.”

“I’ll have time to rest when I’m dead.”

“That’s not a very healthy attitude to have, Prez,” Yuzu frowns. “Fritz has a point; you’ve been taking a lot more responsibility on than usual lately.”

“So, what would you have me do? I can’t exactly delegate thinking.”

>Help the girls with any paperwork

“How about I help you guys for the rest of lunch?” You suggest.

“Sure,” Anzu reclines her chair a little bit and goes back to petting Otto. “Be my guest.”

There’s not too much you’re able to get done before lunch ends, but you reckon you put a dent in the paperwork.

That evening at practice, the film club arrives again. They file into the lounge area and are followed closely by the Council, Miho, and Azusa. You head in after them.

What’s your priority for this meeting?

>Make sure that the film to be made is set.

You decide that probably the most important thing is keeping all the constituent parties working together. The council, the film club and the Sensha-Do club will be working close together in the coming days and any bad blood might be enough to kill the project off.

You take a seat close to Miho and Azusa. Like last time, the council sits near you and the film club is at the other end.

“So, our funding?” Eiga asks once everyone’s settled down.

“You’ll have it,” Anzu replies.

“Good! It’s about- “

“It’s coming out of our club money,” you say, interrupting her. “We want this to happen as much as you do, so make the most of it, ok?”

“Ah, well it’s about time given how much gets spent on you guys!”

“Running tanks is expensive,” you shrug. That seems not to have been the reaction Eiga wanted or expected as she visibly deflates. She’s pushed out of the way by Yusa.

“Okay! So we have a couple weeks to script, film and edit, which is more than enough time.” She then goes on to discuss that process a bit. You don’t understand some of it, but you get the gist of it and what the film club will be doing.

“That doesn’t sound all that expensive to me,” Anzu says when Yusa’s done. You jump in before Eiga can.

“I’m sure there’s hidden costs, right? As great as the film club is I’m sure there’s some stuff they need to get outside of what they can do.”

“I...yeah, that sounds about right,” Yusa answers. “With that out of the way, we looked at the potential movies and we’ve come to a decision on what to produce.

“We brought you in here to make our movie,” Anzu frowns. “Not for you to make one using us.”

>Suggest that the nine of you in the room vote on it now.

“Hang on! This entire thing is happening because of the Sensha-Do club!” Azusa interjects. “If anything, it should be us who decide on this!”

“This movie wouldn’t be happening without us!” Eiga snorts.

“It wouldn’t be happening without us!” Azusa retorts. “We were invited to the festival, not you!”

“Easy, easy,” you say, gently putting your hand on Azusa’s shoulder.

“We’re paying for the movie too,” Miho adds. “Who usually decides on the movie? The production company or the director?”

“A great director always decides!” Eiga retorts.

“And how great a director are you?” Azusa asks.

Eiga makes to talk again, but you interrupt her.

“Look. We’re making this movie for fun. Arguing is not fun. You can either help us, or I’ll find the rest of your club and ask them if they want to help us film tanks blowing shit up. A good director is preferred but optional.”

Eiga makes to retort again but is forced into a chair by Yusa.

“You’ve said enough,” Yusa says sternly. “We agree to that, and we’d prefer it if it’s decided now so we can get to work.”

“So much for getting a great deal for us, huh?” Kuta says, nudging Eiga. The nine of you file out of the room and Miho goes about getting a vote done.

She explains what’s going to happen. She’s going to callout one of the movie ideas and explain it briefly then whoever wants that one votes for it. Yuzu is on hand nearby to keep a tally.

>Ooarai Drift

You stand by Miho and watch as she conducts the votes. The voting is about even for each possibility. Thankfully, Ooarai drift edges out the others to win by a couple of votes thanks to the Leopon voting block and most drivers also voting for it.

“Alright! We’ll be beginning work on it soon!” Yuzu announces. “Hopefully by the end of tomorrow we’ll have a plan and we can work on a script!”

There are scattered cheers at that. It seems the club cares less about what the movie is than that they get to film it.

“When will we have a script?” You ask Yusa who’s standing nearby.

“As soon as we agree on how we want the movie to go, we can have one by the next day.”

“That quick?”

“Well, it’s not going to be that long,” she replies. “Maybe an hour? Hour and a half? Plus, we’re pretty good at what we do.”

>Force the President and the Student Council to have fun

After practice the various members of the club start to file out of the warehouse. You make a beeline for the Student Council and intercept them before they can leave.

“Fritz,” Anzu greets you. “How’s it going, do you need something?”

“You,” you reply. You let that hang for a moment, just long enough for them to get the implication before clarifying. “You are all due for a break.”

“Oh,” Anzu replies. “Look Fritz I appreciate it, but we’re pretty busy right now.”

“Cool,” you reply before promptly scooping her up and over your shoulder. “I don’t care.”

“Fritz Hermann! Let me down!” Anzu demands.

“As mental health secretary I can’t do that,” you reply.

“We don’t have one of those!” She exclaims. You ignore her and walk out of the warehouse, trailed by Yuzu and Momo.

>Head to that sweet potato ice cream shop.

“We’re going to the sweet potato ice cream shop,” you say.

“Koyama! Control him!” Anzu orders.

“Uh, Fritz? Let the Prez get back to work.”

“No.”

“Sorry Prez, I tried,” Yuzu shrugs.

“You didn’t try very hard,” Momo observes.

“I don’t see you trying very hard,” Yuzu replies. You don’t hear a reply from Momo, so you reckon they’re both on your side.

“Traitors,” Anzu grumbles. “You can put me down now, I can’t get anything done without my minions.”

“Minions?” You ask.

“When I’m happy with them they’re colleagues. When I’m not, they’re minions,” Anzu explains.

“Well, minion one, minion two. Shall I put her down?” You ask.

“We’re minions, we’re not paid to think!” Yuzu replies.

“Well, there’s your answer, Anzu.”

She doesn’t bother arguing, instead rearranging herself slightly so she’s more comfortable on your shoulder.

After a few minutes of walking, the four of you make it to the ice cream shop. You ignore the looks and put Anzu down on a seat.

“Stay,” you say. She immediately ignores you and walks over to the counter to order ice cream. Yuzu goes with her, so you find yourself seated with Momo while you wait.

“You beat us to it,” she says.

“I did, did I?”

“Yep,” Momo nods. “This happens every so often, once or twice a year. We had locked the office and were going to jump her on the way there. I didn’t realise it was so obvious.”

“It’s probably not,” you say. “It’s just that I’ve been spending a lot of time with the three of you lately.”

Anzu and Yuzu return with the ice cream a few minutes later. You take yours from Yuzu and the four of you dig in.

>Keep the conversation light, talk about something unrelated.

“So, ladies,” you begin through bites of ice cream. “I never did ask what you were planning to study at university. Or maybe I did, and I forgot.”

“I don’t recall you ever asking,” Yuzu hums. “I’m taking Business and Management.”

“Economics,” Momo says.

“Politics,” Anzu adds. “You’re planning to take History right, Fritz?”

“Yeah,” you nod. “Though suddenly my choice feels a little…impractical.”

“Your love of the past not enough to convince you of its value?” Anzu teases.

“Very funny,” you reply unamused.

“History is plenty practical,” Yuzu adds. “Any job that doesn’t require a specific degree – history will get you there. Besides, Fritz has his future planned out already.”

“It’s true,” you nod. “I’ve already started looking for properties in Argentina.”

“Argentina?” Anzu asks. You say nothing and continue eating your ice cream. It takes a moment for your non-European audience to get the joke and you’re satisfied with the eye rolls and huffs it gets.

“We’ll have to work on the roleplaying as a war criminal bit,” Yuzu sighs.

“But seriously, have you guys considered doing Sensha-Do past high school? You’re all pretty good at it?”

The three of them look at each other for a moment.

“Maybe,” Anzu finally says. “It was more of a means to an end, but it was fun.”

“Maybe through university, but I don’t think we’d go professional.” Yuzu adds.

“Well if you say so.” You shrug and make a mental note to do something about that.

The conversation continues like that for a while, discussing the future, the past, and everything in between. It’s soon time to leave for home. Yuzu declares you haven’t had enough time together lately and you take the hint, inviting her over. As you part ways with Momo and Anzu, you hear the President’s final comment float through the air.

“Fritz? Don’t think I’ve forgotten about today.”

>“You can address the check to Fritz J. Hermann.”

You don’t hear a reply from Anzu, but you don’t doubt she heard you.

“She’ll actually do it, you know,” Yuzu says as you begin walking back to your apartment. “Just to watch you struggle to get it cashed.”

“How hard can it be?” You reply.

“In Japan?” Yuzu doesn’t say anything else, but you don’t think she fancies your chances against the Japanese banking system.

“I bet I could beat the banks,” you mumble. Yuzu just nods sadly.

You have a nice night with Yuzu. You make dinner together and sit down to watch TV together. Erika makes an appearance but upon seeing Yuzu, settles for stealing your leftover dinner and disappearing. She also takes Otto with her who looks entirely unperturbed about being abducted.

Wednesday 4th October (Day 170)

That morning when you head into practice, you’re not surprised to be dragged into another meeting instead of being allowed to get back to tanking. As with the previous ones, the film club, the council, Miho, and Azusa area all present in the lounge. What is different is that Eiga is no longer doing the talking. Instead, Yusa seems to be heading the meeting.

“Hello everyone,” she begins. “As voted on yesterday, we’ll be going with the Ooarai drift project. We now need to decide on the premise as well as the beginning, climax, and end. Our two ideas are either a pure racing and drama movie or a racing action movie ala Fast and Furious.”

“So, do we put it to a vote?” Miho asks.

“We could,” Yusa replies after a moment’s hesitation. “But it’d be quicker if we decided here and now so we can deal with the plot this morning too. The more time we have to actually make it, the better it’ll be.”

You look to the others.

“That’s what we’re hear to do, right? Speak for the entire club?” Azusa begins.

“What if they don’t like the decision we make?” Miho asks.

“Those that lost the vote yesterday didn’t seem too fussed about it,” Anzu chips in. “And they seem to enjoy the idea of making the movie more than they care about the contents.”

“Oh thank god,” Yusa sighs. “If we had to do every decision by committee...” She doesn’t finish her thoughts on doing things by taking a vote and instead gets back to it. “So what kind of movie is it going to be?”

“Racing movie,” you and Azusa say at the same time. You look to each other, nod, then look to Miho.

She looks like a deer in headlights. “Uh, President?”

“It’s your movie,” she shrugs. “Knock yourself out.”

“Well, racing movie it is then!” Miho announces.

“Good to hear progress happening,” Yusa nods. “We discussed both possible types of movie last night, and we came up with a couple of ideas you might want to consider. If you have your own, you’re welcome to say so though.”

“Alright, hit us,” Miho replies.

“Right, the first we’ve titled ‘Initial P’. It’d be about a group of hometown heroes in their tank, forced into tank racing against their will, a real underdog story. The second we’ve called ‘Clash’ for now and it’s about the rivalry between two prominent street-tank-drifters which led to fame, glory and tragedy for both. The third we’ve called ‘Monaco’. It’s about a famous circuit race taking place in the city which attracts all sorts of weird and wonderful characters to compete in it.”

“All of them sound very interesting,” Azusa says excitedly. “Commander, Commander! Which one is your favourite!?”

“Well, weird and wonderful sounds like a lot of fun,” you say. “What do you guys think?”

“I thought that ‘Initial P’ sounded alright,” Miho begins. “But I think ‘Monaco’ sounds better to get everyone involved.”

“Why do you think that, Commander?” Azusa asks.

“Well professional racing will have what? Twenty teams? Thirty? We don’t even have that many so that’s plenty of scope to get everyone in.”

“The entire team being part of the movie won’t bloat it, will it?” Azusa asks the film club.

“That’s the point of the movie,” Kuta adds softly.

“What she said,” Yusa nods. “As long as we make every group distinct, and don’t go too much into the individual level apart from the main characters, it can be done without feeling like you don’t know who’s who.”

“Well then I suppose I’m down for Monaco too!” Azusa says.

“Great, great! This is good stuff!” Yusa says, scribbling all the decisions down. “Much better than going by committee. Then it’d take us all week to get here!”

“I take it the head of the film club isn’t voted on then?” You say idly.

“How’d you know?” Eiga, who’s been very quiet so far, asks.

You share a look with Azusa then turn back to the film club. “Call it a hunch.”

“Well, regardless of what it is, we’ll be able to get back to you tomorrow morning with a plot and if you’re alright with that, we can have a script by the next day.”

“So quickly?” Miho asks.

“Well we have a week and a half, so we have to move quickly,” Eiga replies. “As great a director as I am, I can’t work miracles.”

“It helps our writers know what they’re doing,” Kuta says.

Practice ends shortly after that and the lot of you split up.

>Talk to Leopon team, see if they’re happy with the movie so far.

At lunch, you head back to the warehouse and go to the corner that the automotive club have commandeered as a repair zone/club hang out. They’re not working on their Tiger or any of the other active tanks. Instead, the four of them are swarming the spare Crusader.

“Afternoon all,” you say as you approach. “How’s it going?”

“It’s going great, Commander,” Hoshino replies, rolling out from underneath the tank. “The lot of us were really excited to hear it’d be a racing movie. We’ve been preparing the Crusader ever since because it’s a bit faster so we can race better.”

“A bit?” You repeat, looking over to their usual ride. “How much have you modified your Tiger?”

“As much as is legal!” Nakajima shouts from the Crusader’s engine deck. “You don’t need to check though!”

“I see,” you reply. “That’s not going to be a problem for us later, will it?”

“No way!” Suzuki replies. “Trust us!”

“Sure, sure,” you decide this isn’t a hill worth dying on right now and shift back to the movie. “You do realise it’s not an actual race, right? Just a race movie, you can use the Tiger P and you won’t be at any disadvantage.”

The four of them pause what they’re doing and look at each other.

“Ah,” Suzuki says. “That would make sense.”

“And we’ve put all this work into tricking out the Crusader,” Nakajima groans, throwing a spanner at it. It bounces off with a mighty clang and disappears into the warehouse.

“I mean, it’s up to you guys,” you say. “You could use either, no one will care. Besides, I’m sure there’ll be time for some sick drifts.”

“You promise?” Tsuchiya asks, eying you suspiciously.

“The movie’s called Ooarai Drift isn’t it?”

That gets their spirits up.

With the movie being the club’s main priority now, there’s little left to do but wait until the film club returns with a plot for you to look over. You consider doing another practice, even if it’s just your crew. Unfortunately, they don’t seem up for it either, leaving you out of stuff to do.

You therefore decide on paperwork. The council are, as expected, plugging away at it in their office. None of them bat an eyelid when you enter and offer to help, Yuzu just pulls out half her stack and hands it to you. The four of you work through the evening. You don’t get as much done as Yuzu or Momo does, but you’re quicker than the last time to sat down and helped. Though judging from the stacks you can see sitting next to the desks menacingly, you don’t know if that’s much consolation to Yuzu or Momo.

>Go down to Bar Donzoko again.

About the time that practice usually ends, you put down your pen.

“Do you ladies want to go down to Bar Donzoko? It’s been a while since we’ve done that.”

There’s a moment of silence as they ponder that. It’s broken by the rolling of chairs as all three of them stand up.

“Paperwork can wait,” Yuzu says.

“We’re basically ahead anyway,” Momo adds.

“And we haven’t been down there in a long time!” Anzu finishes.

The four of you head down using the express elevator nearby. The bar is busier than it was last time you visited. Most of them are actually normal students instead of naval studies.

>Bother Cutlass at the bar.

The second the Student Council enters the bar, Momo is dragged off by Ogin and you’re reminded by their celebrations that Momo is somewhat of a legend to the students of Johannesburg.

“I should make sure they don’t go too wild,” Yuzu says. She gives your hand a little squeeze and heads off after Momo, leaving you with the President.

“Not going with them, Prez?”

“Wouldn’t want to rain on her parade,” Anzu shrugs.

“Care to join me at the bar then?”

“Gladly,” Anzu replies. The two of you head for the bar where Cutlass is serving as usual.

“Cutlass,” you greet the girl as you sit down. “The usual, three apple schnapps, please.”

You hold up your hand to emphasise and as usual, you only get two of them. You pass one to Anzu.

“Cheers,” Anzu says as you clink them together and drink. “Another please.”

As Cutlass pours, you ask a question. “So, Cutlass. The bar’s a lot busier than it was last time we were around here.”

“Flint made quiet the impression when we went topside,” she replies. “Plus, the revelation we actually have an elevator to get here went a ways to convincing topsiders to give it a chance. Makes a tidy sum on a good day.”

“Technically any establishment selling food or drink on the ship has to be licensed,” Anzu says as she downs the next shot.

“And?” Cutlass replies.

“Nothing, nothing! Just letting you know is all. I’m a firm believer in the free market. The Invisible Hand and all that, you know?”

“Right,” Cutlass replies, unperturbed. You and Anzu pile on the shots and talk. There isn’t any alcohol, so you’re able to keep going strong while you chat.

>Get involved with whatever Yuzu and Momo are doing with Ogin.

“One for the road?” You ask Cutlass. She passes over another shot to both of you which you both down.

“Where are we going?” Anzu asks as the two of you stand.

“Over there,” you reply, pointing towards Yuzu and Momo. “You’re coming with me by the way.”

“I’m standing, aren’t I?”

The two of you walk over to a table towards the back where Yuzu and Momo are seated with Ogin and Rum. You wave hello to Azusa and the Rabbits as you pass them, then turn your attention back to the table.

The four them are intensely concentrated on the table where it seems they’re playing a card game.

“Prez, Hermann,” Ogin greets you both with a nod before turning her attention back to the game.

“Ogin,” you return the greeting. “Game must be high stakes from the way your concentrating.”

“No stakes,” she replies shaking her head. “I just don’t like loosin’”

“So what game are you playing?” Anzu asks.

“Blackjack,” Yuzu replies. “Hit me.”

Ogin flips over a card. Yuzu curses and shoves her cards forward.

“Bust,” Ogin announces.

“She lost?” Anzu asks.

“The value of her cards exceeded twenty-one,” Ogin replies. “Depending on who you ask, it’s either a game of luck or maths.”

“It’s just probability,” Momo replies from the other side at the table. “It’s just there are so many variables that it’s hard to keep track of them. Hit me.”

Ogin flips over another card in front of Momo who sighs in relief when she sees it.

>Join the game yourself and try to figure it out.

“You mind dealing me in?” You ask as you take a seat next to Yuzu.

“Next round,” Ogin nods. She collects the cards and shuffles them for a moment. You watch the cards fly, far faster then you’ve ever shuffled, and just as fast, she deals the cards.

“The rules, very basically, are that you get two cards each and so do I. You must try beat my score, but if the value of your hand goes over twenty-one, you lose. Usually, I’d take your bet if that happens, but uh, we’re not exactly ‘licensed’ to gamble here.” She pointed looks at the Student Council as she says that. You’re pretty sure there would be real money involved if they weren’t.

“Oops,” Anzu shrugs, unrepentant. “It’s an occupational hazard.”

“Either way you’re not as bad as the Morals Committee,” Ogin gripes. “Constantly trying to bust us, we have to kick them out ten times a week.”

You check the cards you were handed. You have a king and a seven.

“How much is a face card worth?” You ask.

“Ten,” Rum slurs. “An Ace is one or eleven, your choice.”

“So, I have seventeen?”

“Yup,” Yuzu confirms. “You don’t want to take a hit as the likelihood is high, you’ll go over twenty-one.”

“Unless you want to try counting everyone else’s cards to see how likely it is that you’ll get a better hand,” Momo says from the other side of the table.

You consider that for a moment. “Maybe not.”

That round ends with yourself even in value to Ogin and slightly ahead of everyone else, excluding Momo who went over twenty-one.

“This round we’ll do secretly,” Ogin announces. She hands you the cards upside down and you check them, a three and a four, so seven in total.

>“Hit me.”

“Yeah, I’ll take a hit too,” Yuzu says.

“Hit me!” Rum declares.

“I’ll stand,” Momo says.

Ogin deals cards to you, Rum, and Yuzu. It’s a ten, meaning you have seventeen total.

“Hit me again!” Rum calls. She’s given a card and then angrily throws them all down. “Struck out,” she grumbles as she swigs a bottle sitting nearby.

“No one want anymore cards?” Ogin asks, looking at the three of you. “Okay, reveal when ready.”

The three of you put down your cards and have a look around. Yuzu’s slightly ahead of you at eighteen, but Momo is behind you. You’ve beaten the house – Ogin – too.

That sets the tone for the rest of the night. You win a couple rounds, Momo very few and Yuzu the most. Rum is too out of it to participate after two or three.

Thursday 5th October (Day 171)

The next morning you head for the warehouse as usual. You’re once again shuttled into the lounge turned meeting room to look at what the film club has for you.

“So, what’s the plan?” Miho asks the club as the get up to present.

“It’s a pretty simple one,” Yusa says. “It’ll begin with the introduction to a team that is new to the circuit – our main protagonists – and show their journey from the amateurs to Monaco. Well, Ooarai-aco, as well as their making friends with some of the competitors who we will also be introduced to. The middle and meat of the movie will be the race itself. We haven’t choreographed it yet, but suffice to say, it’ll be epic. On the ending, we’re torn. We’ve tentatively settled on having the newcomers lose out to the main antagonist due to an act of kindness, but the protagonists could also win after just edging out the main antagonist due to their smarts and teamwork.”

>Take issue with the beginning/middle (what?)

>Suggest them winning would be better.

“Don’t you think them winning would be better?” You ask. “Even if they’re happy when they lose, it’d be a sort of bittersweet ending.”

“But then how,” Eiga says, standing up. “Would you set it up for the sequel? Look at any of the great sports movies! Rocky lost in the first movie! Lightning McQueen did as well!”

“What sequel?” Miho asks. “Even if we get invited next year, why would you want to do the same movie twice in a row?”

“Why wouldn’t you want to leave the option open?” She retorts. “You may never end up making that second movie but at least you have the chance to do it instead of cutting yourself off from ever being able to do it.”

“The sequel’s always worse than the original,” Azusa adds seriously.

“Apart from Aliens,” Anzu drawls.

“President! How could you!?” Azusa gasps.

You can see the film club about to get themselves involved in the argument, so you step in.

“I think we should just have it as a one and done,” you say, interrupting the brewing debate. “The main characters should win and that’ll be the end of that.”

With you and Miho supporting it and the Student Council ambivalent, the motion passes. The film club promises to rewrite it and be ready to cast tomorrow.

At lunch, you’re called to the Student Council office. It’s slightly amusing since most lunches you end up their anyway, but you heed the call.

“Hey girls,” you greet them as you enter. The scene is as usual. Yuzu and Momo working, Anzu and Otto ‘working’.

“Fritz,” Anzu nods back. “I need someone to ask the city council about using the city to film. I’d call ‘em, but it’s rude to ask for someone’s city over the phone.”

“And you want me to go?”

“Yeah, they all like you. Plus, they don’t see you as a threat. No offence.”

“None taken,” you reply.

>“This is basically PR, Momo do you want to come with?”

“Hmph, well, I’m glad that someone realises the value of my work,” Momo says as she stands.

“Waddaya mean, Kawashima? We all appreciate you here,” Anzu replies.

“You appreciate my ability to do paperwork,” Momo responds. She takes a minute to gather her things and put away the papers she was working on before walking over to you.

“We’ll be back shortly,” Momo says as the two of you leave. You throw a wave over your shoulder before following her out.

A visit to the aviation club reveals all their helicopters are either out or down for maintenance. That makes the fastest way of getting there your bike.

“I’m not sure about this,” Momo says, eyeing the bike. “They’re far more dangerous than a car.”

“Can you drive a car?” Momo is silent, and reluctantly gets on the bike. She squeezes far too tight, but after minor adjustment, the two of you are off.

From the schoolship, you board the ferry, which takes you from the ship out at sea into port. You’re disembarked a little way north of Ooarai and from there, you head into town. Unfortunately, you’re not able to use the mountain roads to the fullest since Momo squeezes tightly if you go too fast.

You soon reach Ooarai and the town hall. It seems Anzu called ahead, because you don’t have to wait, and instead you’re shuttled in to see the mayor. He’s sitting at his desk in his office. It’s smaller than you’d expect, but it’s well furnished with bookshelves and pictures of himself at various events.

“Commander Hermann! Miss Kawashima! So good to see you!” He cheers. “Come, sit down! I’m afraid I’m very short on time today, so we’ll have to keep this brief but please, what do you need?”

“We want to shoot a racing movie and we need access to Ooarai’s streets to film,” you say.

“Interesting,” he looks down at a notebook and flips through it. The mayor finds the page he’s looking for and scribbles something down. “Well, any day before eight in the morning and after eight in the morning, just let us know when and where and we can do that for you,” he replies. “If you want to shoot during the day, it can only be at the weekends. Is that alright?”

You have no clue how good a deal that is, so you turn to Momo.

“That’s perfect, thanks,” she replies, bowing her head slightly. You stay with the mayor a little longer before he has to leave for a meeting.

>You’re already out here, why not make a day of it? Grab some lunch with Momo.

You make a show of checking your watch. “It looks like we’re already late for lessons, and I’ve not had any lunch. What do you say we get some while we’re in town.”

“And miss even more school?” Momo asks, eyebrow arched.

“Well…yes, I suppose. Not unless you can move backwards in time,” you reply. Momo looks unconvinced, but you decide to press it. “Look, Prez knew exactly where the ship was and where we had to go. She wouldn’t send us out here then let us get in trouble for it.”

“It’s not getting in trouble I’m concerned about,” Momo says. She checks her own watch, tuts, sighs and massages her forehead. “Though I suppose at this point it doesn’t matter if we rush back since the ferry won’t be for a while.”

“That’s the spirit!” You exclaim. “Let’s go find somewhere to eat.” You begin moving towards your bike, but Momo catches your hand before you can move.

“Not the bike,” she says. “We walk.”

You hold up your hands in mock surrender. “No bike.” With that sorted, you head out to find somewhere to eat.

In the end, you settle on Chinese. You weren’t sure on the restaurant given it looked to be falling apart from the outside, but inside it looked clean enough if a little small. Momo also vouched for the place and seemed to know the service staff personally which helps assuage your suspicion of the place slightly.

Momo orders for the both of you, and you end up with a box of noodles with barbeque chicken and schezuan beef. Momo has the same, though a smaller box than yours.

>Ask how her family is doing.

“So, Momo, how is your family doing?”

“Well,” she replies immediately, an easy smile gracing her face. “They grow up way too fast, it seems like just yesterday they were crying about some toy or the other.” She pauses to consider that. “Actually, that was yesterday, they’re just bigger than the last time.”

“Must be a real challenge for you,” you reply. “Erika’s close to me in age so I’ve not done much, but you’re a bit older than the rest of your siblings, aren’t you?”

“I am, the oldest one is about five years younger than me,” she replies. “It’s meant a lot of extra work over the years since my parents work full time, but it’s worth it.”

“Plus your Student Council commitments,” you say nodding. “That’s a lot of work.”

“You get used to it,” she replies. “The body has a remarkable capacity to adapt to its situation. It’ll end when I go to university too.”

“Not worried how they’ll do without you?”

She hesitates. “I’m not. They’ll have to learn to live without me eventually anyway.”

You decide not to point out her hesitation and just nod along. You chat a little longer with her before leaving. Momo asks about yours and you bemusedly talk about some of Erika’s more amusing exploits. Eventually, however, you have to leave for the ferry. The journey goes fine if a little long due to Momo’s reluctance to use a motorbike.

It’s almost time for practice when you reach the ship. Yuzu and Anzu are waiting for you when you do.

You go to greet them, but Yuzu holds out a hand and stops you.

“Wait, wait,” she turns around for a moment before turning back to you, now wearing a fake moustache.

“I do hope you did take good care of my young lady there, mister!” She says with a weird accent. You look to Anzu for an explanation.

“We’re practicing for when Kawashima manages to trick some poor sod into being her boyfriend,” Anzu explains. Momo next to you seems to be going red though whether from anger or embarrassment you can’t tell.

“Splendid! Do be good to her young man!”

>“I'll leave her better than I found her.”

“Unlikely, but I like the spirit!” Dad-zu replies, the joke going over her head.

“Don’t you encourage her, Hermann!” Momo snaps before rounding on the rest of the council. “And you two can stop this too! It’s not a very funny joke!”

“We’d never mess about with your safety, darling!”

That’s Momo’s cue to pounce. You watch bemusedly as she leaps atop Yuzu. You only intervene to make sure they don’t hit the ground, but otherwise leave them to it.

The warring parties eventually make their way to the council office. It’s about time for evening practice, and you consider leaving for the warehouse but you have nothing to do there, so you join them in their work.

The paperwork is light compared to usual, and to your surprise after about an hour it ends.

“No more?” You ask, slightly confused.

“Yup, we’re all done,” Anzu sighs letting her head quietly thunk on the table. “At least for a week or so.”

“Things are calming down,” Yuzu explains as she massages her hand. “The new elections are soon, so there’s slowly less and less for us to do.”

“Speaking of elections,” Anzu drawls, sitting up. “Fritz, what are your feelings on democracy?”

“Yeah, democracy,” Anzu nods.

“…why?” You ask.

“Elections are coming up,” Anzu explains. “We could use ‘impartial’ observers who can ensure the results are ‘fair’ and ‘honest’.”

>“Germans have a spotty history with democracy.”

“Don’t you encourage the Prez!” Yuzu complains before whipping around to Anzu. “And don’t you get involved in any shenanigans.”

“What shenanigans? I haven’t even said anything yet?” Anzu says, feigning innocence.

“Prez! The democratic process is important,” Yuzu argues. “We won the election fair and square, so why shouldn’t anyone else?”

“Because we need to make sure the right people win,” Anzu replies. “We’ve worked hard to save this school, it’s important we make sure it isn’t thrown down the drain.”

“We didn’t throw it down the drain!”

“Look, Koyama, this is just preparing for a worst-case scenario,” Anzu says, trying to calm her down. “With our help, whoever we designate as successors will probably win anyway. This is just insurance.”

“Momo-chan! What’s your opinion?” Yuzu asks.

“…well-”

The hesitation is enough for Yuzu who groans and sinks to her desk.

>Go over the plan for tomorrow’s expedition with the history buffs.

Once you’ve reassured Yuzu that you won’t be rigging any elections unless the situation calls for it, you make your way to the history club’s shared house. You’re greeted at the door by Saemonza who lets you in and leads you to the table.

“So, ladies. What’s the plan?”

“The plan,” Caesar begins. “Is to head back down to where we found the papers and coins and look for anything else that may be related to it. Ideally, we’d get a location in Japan we can investigate when we next make landfall, but even one in the Phillipenes might be visitable.”

“Regarding logistics, the plan is to leave Friday evening and return Saturday morning, but we’ve packed for a couple days, just in case,” Erwin adds.

“How much idea do you have?” Caesar asks.

“Very little,” you admit.

“We have about the same,” Erwin sighs. “The gold is obviously from the Second World War in some way shape or form, but we couldn’t tell you who’s it is or if it’s stolen or anything.”

“It probably is stolen though,” Saemonza says.

“Without a doubt,” Oryou nods. “From our research there is hundreds of tons of the stuff unaccounted for from the years of war.”

“Most of which is due to Japan,” Erwin chuckles.

“If it’s stolen, that means we won’t be able to keep it, right?”

“It depends, but probably not,” Caesar sighs. “With stuff like this comes politics.” She spits the word out like it’s a curse, and from the look on the rest of the club’s face, they agree with the poor assessment.

“Money in particular fuels it,” Erwin sighs, twirling her cap on her head. “I almost hope that we’ll find such a small amount that no one will care.”

“But?” You prompt.

“Who doesn’t want to find buried treasure?” She answers. You can’t help but agree.

Friday 6th October (Day 172)

That morning you wake up early, ready to get going on the expedition. Unfortunately, it’s in the evening, but you can’t help being excited. When you arrive at the warehouse, the film club is talking to the team, explaining the roles available and letting people put their name down.

When you approach to see what you could do, you’re stopped before you can even ask and handed a couple of potential roles.

>The main antagonist – cool, collected, and a dick to the main protagonist.

You’re torn for a moment between the antagonist or the mentor as both seem like cool roles. Ultimately though, you settle on the antagonist, helped in no small part by your old tankery uniform being perfect for the job.

As practice is ending, you remember that it’s probably a good idea to help the film club with getting filming permission without you or the council there, both to save yourself time dealing with it and because if they go to Anzu there’s a possibility it won’t happen at all.

You manage to catch Kuta just before she leaves.

“Hey, Kuta, do you have a minute?” She turns to face you and a solid five seconds pass before she replies.

“…Yes,” she eventually says.

“If you guys have time at lunch, you should come to the council office so we can get you filming permission without you needing to go through us.”

Another five seconds.

“Sure,” with that she turns and walks away. You chalk it up to her being shy.

>Coordinate with the film club so they can request filming permission without going through anyone.

That lunch, you head to the Student Council office as normal. A few minutes later, the film club appears.

“Inviting people to my office now, are you?” Anzu asks, eyebrows raised. You do a double-take as she picks up a piece of paper and works on it, steadfastly avoiding acknowledging the film club.

Between you and Yuzu you’re able to sort out the details with Ooarai’s culture office and the mayor’s secretary.

>Help the film club plan the tank-y stunts.

That evening, the club is buzzing as people go over preliminary scripts. Filming starts first thing Monday giving you the weekend to learn your lines.

You decide to help in another way, from what the film club have said, they’re not particularly well versed in car movies, let alone tank ones.

You find the film club in the lounge area, which has been turned into a writing room.

“Hermann,” Yusa greets you. “Come to help? We could use it.”

“Sure, hit me.”

“Can you drift a tank? How does the location of the barrel impact the centre of gravity? Do you know the physics of high-speed cornering?” She shoots at you rapid fire.

“Well, I can answer two of those,” you reply as you take a seat with them. “A skilled driver can drift one pretty regularly. As for the centre of gravity, it depends on how long and heavy the barrel is.

“That’s what she said,” Kuta adds softly. You quirk your lips, but otherwise ignore it and continue.

“If it’s one like Werewolf has, then it’ll make a big difference that needs to be accounted for. Something like the Type 89 wouldn’t change a thing. As for the last one, maybe I should call a driver or two in.”

“Please, if you could,” Yusa nods. You leave the room and return a few moments later with Mako and Max who can answer questions like that better than you can. You stay with them as they do, chipping in with your own experiences when you can help. You reckon that the film club walked away that evening knowing how to make a tank race look alright.

Fin.
