Valyria has fallen.

The greatest city the world has ever seen has died in the cataclysm that split the Land of the Long Summer, burnt away the cedars of Velos and signaled the end of an Era.

And yet its legacy persists, in the form of its colonies - Volantis and her ten sister-cities: Tyrosh, Myr, Norvos, Pentos, Lorath, Lys, Qohor, Bravos, Gogossos and Essaria – and the surviving cities on the border of the Valyrian heartland – Elyria, Mantarys, Tolos and their neighbors.

Dark omens abound these days - far to the North a dragonlord proclaimed himself Emperor of Valyria, while there are rumors of a mighty Khal uniting the barbarians of the East. The High King has apparently lost any interest in exerting royal authority on his fellow Sarnorian monarchs, letting the country slowly spiral into a cold war that could at any moment turn hot, pitting the Eastern Marches of the High Kingdom against its heartland. Belicho, the Archon of Essaria, appears posited to resign due to domestic pressure while an early winter is slowly setting in thanks to the ashes released in the atmosphere by the what many already call “the Doom”.

And yet…nothing of this seems to matter to Aegar Tagaros, Triarch of the Tiger party.

>“..only we are suited to reunite the Daughters of the Freehold, for Valyria lives on through its eldest daughter, mighty Volantis!”

A loud cheer erupts from the crowd, as said man speaks loudly from atop the stairs leading to the great doors in the Black Wall.

>“The Freehold shall endure. We survived the invasions of the Old Empire of Ghis, defeated the barbarians of the East and bent the Rhoynars to our will! We are the greatest civilization this world has ever known and We. Shall. Endure!”

A loud cheer erupts once more from the assembled crows of nobles, just as a similar, much louder one erupts from the commoners outside the Black Wall who are listening to the speech being delivered by and heralds. You can easily imagine the loud cheer propagating to the entire city as the speech is delivered in every street corner, plaza and market square by heralds.

You sigh as the Triarch continues on, already knowing how the speech will end.

>“Citizens! Brothers. Sisters. The world has gone dark and it falls upon us to ensure the light of civilization will shine on for the centuries to come. It is for this reason that I call upon you in this hour of need: the Freehold needs you, Volantis needs you.”

God, the man is so dramatic...

>“People forget that the soldiers who conquered the world were not dragons. No, they were common men and women like you and me! What our ancestors conquered, we shall reconquer with the sweat of our brow! Long live the Freehold! Long live Valyria!”

And so, with an incredibly loud cheer, the Century of Blood began.

NOTE – people will be denoted by different colors (Normal Green – Rhogar, Darker Green – Sheira, Red – Aurion, Blue – Viserys)

You dream of ashes that night.

You stand atop a hill and look down on the sprawling ruins of a city – it takes you little to recognize it as your home.

It’s but a dream, and yet…it feels real.

Moreover, strangely Horonno appears to be standing next to you, silently crying at the sigh – you can’t force yourself to cry, given how shell-shocked you are at seeing your home in such a state

“It is real, beloved”

You force a small smile, hearing the voice of your betrothed and feeling her arms wrap around you, while she rests her head on your shoulder

“It’s…not a vision. It’s a memory that your uncle offered to me. He said it’d be a fitting place..”

She can’t finish what she was saying, for a voice you thought you would never hear again speaks loudly

“It is a fitting place to discuss the future of our family”

You turn around quickly, your eyes fixated on the tired, hollowed out face of Aurion Belaerys, the man who once declared to the world he would remake Valyria in his image.

“Hello nephew. It has been a while”

You don’t get to speak, as another man, this one much similar to you, engulfs you in his arms – Viserys Belaerys, your father.

There is no need to speak as you hug your old man back and fall to your knees with him still holding you tight.

You have never heard your father cry – he was renowned for his joviality and bravado…it’s a sound that will haunt you for the rest of your days.

You see your uncle holding your cousin, trying to calm him down, as Sheira takes a step back and lets you all have this private moment for yourselves.

What will you say to your long-lost family?
> Write-in

NOTE - this session will be heavily based on role-play. Your interaction with your relatives shall determine their attitude toward you long-term.

You might be dealing with people that are traumatized (depending on the person), and not at all like you remember them from before the Doom..

> Hello father, uncle. Words cannot express the joy at seeing you two alive and breathing. I feared Horonno and I were the last of our family, its a relief we are not. I know there is so much to say and so little time. I have so many questions, and you probably do as well.

This is what I have so far. Leaving the last bit open so that they can ask questions and we can also ask some later on.
>>
If people are "afraid" to give wrong answers, please don't be - there are no right or wrong answers today.

Partecipate, and we shall progress bit by bit (I won't move forward with the scenes if there is no partecipation, given this session will either splinter your family or allow you to attempt to form a new faction, reforming the Council)
>>
>"Father! Uncle! It is so great to see you! I feared you dead along with the many other Dragonlords who met their untimely demise. I myself was attacked, along with Horonno, by assassins as we slept in Lys. Barely making it out I was able to get to Urrax and secure Horonno before burning the Lysene fleet as we escaped wounded to the west. I met up with the Reynes and was able to secure repayment of an old debt while we rested, healing from our wounds. After gathering forces we headed back east to attempt to reunite with any other survivors taking personal possession of the Stepstones on the way before meeting with the Triarchs of Volantis coming to what I think is a favorable agreement. My beloved Sheira was able to communicate with me that you both lived and returned from Valyria. Upon hearing this I changed my plans to head straight here to see it with my own eyes! I feared I may be the last of our dynasty..

From last thread when we were discussing what to say to them. Can edit it as needed if we want to use it at all.

I'm brainstorming something at the moment. More heavy RP stuff has further implications for character relationships and I want to be careful not to scare away a potentially damaged Aurion.

>Father. Uncle. I have been a boy for the longest time, but I am now a man. Our family, Valyria and its spirit, has never been in such dire circumstances. Make no mistake, these people are not our allies, but they will help us reclaim what once was ours and perhaps even more. To the Westerosi, we are gods made flesh. To these men, we are a convenience to be maneuvered around. Trust none but the Reynes and our kin. The worst has yet to pass.
brooding pretty boy is our MO
>>
Well I wanted us to convey how happy we are to see both of them alive, probably should have mentioned in my write in to show some affection but I'm assuming we are naturally doing so.

And I left it open so that I could see how our father and uncle each react. Especially our Uncle, no doubt our father loves as most parents probably do. But our uncle is a mystery(as a player, Rhogar IC probably knows more about him) and so I wanted to see what questions he and our father have for us. And then we can ask some later on as well.

3 replies, I'm going to roll with that for now - feel free to write more replies, I will make use of a bit of everything today.

I doubt that's what our father who has tears of joy right now wants to hear. We can get to the grimness of the situation after. There's a time and place for everything, and saying this right now is tactless.

"Father, Uncle, my Love. The three of you being alive brings me happiness beyond words..”

Rolled 3 for Viserys' mental state

You can’t finish your phrase, as your father sobs and hugs you tighter once he hears your voice

”I couldn’t save her Rhogar..so much fire..I..”

Your father can’t even manage to finish the phrase before breaking down once more in desperate sobs.

You try to speak, but every time you attempt to he interrupts you by crying louder. This goes on for a few minutes until his brother, Aurion, signals to you to move aside before picking up his younger brother and shaking him by the shoulders.

”Viserys! Do you think Aelinor would wish to see you give up, just now that you have found your still have a son?!”

Your father keeps his eyes closed, clearly in unimaginable emotional pain.

You have never seen your father so…broken.

Looking to the side, you see that Horonno has begun to slowly walk down the hills, toward a ruined palace – your family home. Sheira looks at you, unsure on what to do.

What will you do?

Rolled 3, 5, 5, 2, 4, 1, 6, 4 = 30 (8d6)

Viserys, Aurion, Sheira, Horonno

Note that your entries will influence their replies, but I will keep rolling for their mental states as time goes on.

>>4831602
Read the previous thread. He has an army, managed to return alive from Valyria itself with your father and many other survivors, and is currently the leader of your house. His men are loyal, his dragon is bigger than Urrax, and he might or might not be seen as the leader of the people he saved from certain death.

You can try to usurp him if the majority of people will support you, and I will roll. I can tell you already it won't be easy and very likely it'll end badly for Rhogar.
>>
>>4831595

> Stay with your father. He needs you now.
I think we would be pretty sad as well if we just found out our mother was dead for sure.

Maybe give Sheira a look motioning for her to follow Horonno, he shouldn't be alone either.
>>
>>4831605
Must've missed that. How the fuck did he survive? Oh well, we've still got our own things to do.

Our whole plan literally revolves around getting him on board with the agreement form the last thread. And positioning ourselves as his successor within a new Valyria.

I'll reread from where we left Westeros. I remember negotiating with the Volantene and still moving on to Essaria but not that. Hope the big man doesn't take too much offense when we sort of know he's still alive when we took action.

I think we should also stop Horonno. He is basically a brother for us.

I think Horonno is going to where his family would have been. He probably needs to go and I'm not sure making him wait to do it would be the best idea. People mourning usually aren't in the mood to listen to any reason.

Sending Sheira to go with him is probably the best idea. He knows how much we care about him and we can meet up with him after having a quick cry with dad.

You take a look at Sheira, conveying her to not move, before going toward your cousin and grabbing him by the arm, stopping him.

He turns toward you with empty eyes, but stops moving toward your ruined home.

"Wait Horonno. Wait. We will go there together, brother. Don’t go alone…we can’t be alone again."

It takes a couple of moments for your words to register, but then he silently nods.

You bring him with you toward your uncle, who is currently holding your father and whispering something in his ear. He gives you a look, which conveys the amount of pain he himself is feeling at the moment.

And yet, he can’t show it for the sake of his little brother.

You put a hand over your father’s shoulder, and simply sit with him as he cries.

Aurion gives you a small nod before leaving you with your father – he himself moving to stand with your cousin and talk to him.

”Fire..things from the ground…your mother..oh gods”

A womanly hand comes into view and gently rests on Visery’s cheek

“Viserys…we are here for you”

Says Rhaelle Soranyen, the mother of your betrothed. You did not even notice her approaching…or appearing for that matter.

And yet she sits on the other side of your father, gently holding his head and whispering to him as if to someone close

“Shh it’s fine..”

It’s..strange to witness, but you could swear that her eyes shifted tone as she spoke to your father.

You raise an eyebrow as your father seems to calm down. Rhaelle has the decency of giving you an embarrassed smile, before speaking to you

“An harmless spell that will help him calm down…sadly there is little I…that anyone can do for him, save to be there for him”

At this you can only nod. The older woman looks at you and then at the rest of your family, sitting by the side as Aurion seems to still be in deep talk with Horonno, while Sheira stands by the side, as if unsure of her place in all of this

“…these are difficult moments, Rhogar. We should all stand together. Come, help me”

You stand and help her guide your father toward where the others are sitting.

You don’t even have the time to sit down that Sheira is upon you, hugging you close and whispering sweet nothing. You simply listen to her babbling, enjoying the moment of calm as emotions rage inside of you.

Aurion gives a final hug to Horonno, before checking on Viserys. Seeing that his brother has (apparently) calmed down, he motions for you to come to him and Horonno.

You do as the Patriarch of your Dynasty commands and sit in front of him.

There is silence for a minute, before your uncle speaks up

“Rhogar. I have not always been the best brother to your father. I have not been fair to you either. For that I ask forgiveness. But we are family…and family sticks together”

You can only nod before your uncle looks at you and Horonno both

“Our family is gone. This..us four, we are all that remain. Horonno, your mother is there, together with your little brother and sister”

He points toward the burned ruins.

”Rhogar..Aelinor…she tried to save her nephew and niece. Your mother died a heroine, trying to save my own children. I..I will never forget what your family has done for mine”

He takes a deep breath, trying to calm down

“But we have to look forward. I did not expect anyone else to have survived. For what is worth..I am glad it was you, nephew”

What will you do?

No more words.

You hug your uncle. The man that once called you a shame to your own family, the man who once attempted to exile you from your family home…this is not him.

That man is dead, buried in the charred ground of Valyria with the bones of his wife and his children.

The sight of his own family dying, as your mother tried to save them…this man, in front of you, is not him – it’s someone that has saved your father, someone who has decided to be there for his family in their moment of need even if it meant to shut off his own pain.

He has not shunned you, but is instead hugging you back, for like he said…family sticks together.

> “No more fighting uncle..I forgive you”

And for the first time since you have memory, you hear your uncle, the man who was once defined steel incarnated, catch his breath and release a sob.

As you pull back, he squints his eyes and stands up

”I told Rhaelle to bring us here to mourn…this is the closest we’ll ever get to Valyria”

He has a haunted look on his face

What will you do?

I don't remember, but Horonno's also a bit of a black sheep/disappoinment, isn't he? It's better than nothing but Jesus Christ. It's one step away from Catelyn thinking Jon's thing of Ned she has left.

We should watch out for Aurion's mental state. It's not a good idea to put more weight on his shoulders as is unless he's as much as a workaholic muh duty guy as Stannis is. Though I didn't mean it, we might have to soft coup power or at least convince Aurion to take time off lest we get a mad king scenario, only with dragons.

Your father spoke of things coming out of the earth. Aurion said your mother died trying to save his children.

You have to know.

> “Uncle. Tell me what happened to my mother”

He looks at you, and you swear you see the light leave his eyes as he takes on a haunted, faraway look

“I don’t know what caused it to begin. By the time we reached Valyria, the entire area looked like..”

He moves his hand around, pointing at the broken sky (are those tails in the clouds?

They do not look like anything you have ever seen) and then at the ground.

You swear you could see something move out of the corner of your eye

“…there were things in the sky, Rhogar. I do not know what they were, for I caught but a glimpse of them. I was too late to save Valyria…but I was just in time to watch something come out of the earth, from fractures that opened as far as the eye could see. Things that moved like worms, akin to firewyrms…if firewyrms has too many eyes, mouths and arms”

He closes his eyes and fists, clearly in distress. After a few seconds, he nods and continues

“I saw something, black like the night sky, tear through the front of our home. I flew Vassarion toward it and ordered him to…do something. Burn it I guess. It grew Rhogar. It fucking grew in front of my own eyes, as if feeding of the fire. And then I saw its face, with too many eyes and..it came bearing down on..on..”

It is clear that he is describing the last moments of your mother and his children.

You hear a roar, and above your ruined home you see the memory playing out..it’s like Aurion said. Something is clearly growing as Vassarion, your uncle’s dragon, breathes fire at it.

You witness a clash of titans. Vassarion is easily two times ad big as Urrax if not more, and yet the monstruosity that he’s battling seems to be completely immune to its fangs or fire. It moves its tail and bats the dragon aside, causing it to crash into another building.

You can hear the screams of your family..as well as those of Aurion himself.

You turn to look closer at your uncle..and you can clearly see the marks upon his skin, where something came out of his right shoulder.

It’s too much.

You stand and take out your stiletto, as well as your knife.

Memory or not. The thing that killed your family will die by your hand. You swear it.

You are not even listening as Aurion stops talking -red is all you see as you dash toward the thing that killed your family.

You will make it pay.

You will hear it scream for whatever orifice it calls its mouth.

> Agility (Quickness) Test – 21 vs 8
> Incredible Success! Three Degrees of Success!

Rhaella tries to grab you, but you vault beneath her extended arm and prepare your Valyrian Steel weapons. They are calling for blood, and so are you.

And then…

> Will (Spell – Castigation) Test – 21 vs 9
> Incredible Success! Three Degrees of Success!
> 7 damage taken = 5 HP left
NOTE – there is no fucking way I let Rhaella make you a vegetable as she is simply trying to stop you. I deny her 3 degrees of success by QM fiat or she’d inflict 21 damage to you.

…you scream as pain wrecks your body and you fall prone.

It feels like the pain lasts for a lifetime, and yet..as soon as it’s come, it’s gone, leaving you trying to breathe on the ground.

You hear a scream, and a sound akin to a punch. Managing to turn your face you see Rhaella on the ground, with your uncle standing above her with a hand on his sword, screaming at her

“What do you think you are doing?!”

It’s clear what she did – she likely saved your life in the only way she could.

And yet..

What will you do?

You push yourself up, holding your side.

The feeling of pain lingers, but it’s not as debilitating as it’d be in the real world, apparently.

You limp and attempt move in between your uncle and Rhaella, who is looking at Aurion with steely eyes

“I was saving your nephew sanity, you imbecile”

“By causing him a mental breakdown?!

> Persuasion (Charm) Test – 20 vs 18 (DC)
> Rolled 23 (-3 due to phantom pain)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

Before she can reply, you stand between them and spread your arms, even if the motion causes you to groan in phantom pain.

> “It is true uncle, she likely saved me from…that”

You weakly point at…whatever it is, that is trashing around in the ruins of your home

Your uncle grinds his teeth, but removes his hand from the handle of his sword.

You turn, and feel a gentle touch on your shoulder – it’s Rhaella.

“I’m sorry Rhogar..I tried to catch you, but you were simply too fast for me. I…had to stop you. I have no idea what effect dying in here would have on you in the real world, but I am not about to find out. Stay still please”

She takes a small knife and cuts her hand

> Will (Cruentus) Test – 12 vs 9
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!
> 1 Damage (Rhaella) – 5 HP restored to Rhogar

She looks at your uncle before speaking

“I am healing the damage caused. Stop looking at me like I’m a monster”

Aurion grunts, then motions for the others to gather around him.

”I..might have overreacted. Apologies. But I think no one here is in a right state of mind right now. Too many emotions, too much..pain. We received your messenger Rhogar. Well done. I wish to speak to you again come the morrow – use the glass candle. But for now..”

He looks down at Horonno (who has bags under his eyes and a faraway expression), to his brother (who is still catatonic), to Rhaella (who refuses to meet his eyes and simply keeps her hand on your shoulder), to Sheira (who seems on the verge of crying)…and finally to you, unable to tear your eyes off the thing that killed your family.

“…for now, we all need to rest and recover. I..I am glad that you two survived. With all the death surrounding us, we need to stick together. ALL of us need to stick together”

He puts emphasis on the “all” – at this even Rhaella looks at him in the eyes. You see the fury in her eyes die down, replaced by a quiet determination before she gives Aurion a simple nod.

At this your uncle makes a simple gesture in the air, and you wake up, still in your cabin.

What will you do?

Also, opinions about sorcery so far?

I am playing it along the lines that magic is quite rare, but the Dragonlord families had various exponents that were quite capable in that regard.

So far you have seen Rhaelle, who is an extremely accomplished sorceress, her daughter (who is learning from her mother, but doesn't have the same talent, to put it bluntly) and Aurion (notice how he ended the spell at the end).

Notice that nothing stops you from asking your soon-to-be wife or her mother to teach you, if you are willing to burn XP to learn sorcery. Just castigation would have inflicted 21 damages to you, and Rhaelle rolled very bad in that roll (>>4831809). It was her Will * Degree of Success = Damage
>>
>>4831946
It's certainly something to think about if we want to invest in it. Perhaps later, sorcery is a great tool but we can't afford to not invest in other more relevant abilities.

There are only two thoughts in your mind right now.

One – Horonno!

Two…you don’t even complete the thought, your body flinging itself out of bed, running out of the cabin. The next 10 minutes are…not pleasant. Many jokes will be made among the Westerosi mercenaries about how their employer might be capable of razing down cities, but can’t keep his alcohol and food down for shit (many were already calling you “prettier than their daughters”…this won’t help, but on the other hand you bonded relatively well with these men over the past weeks).

Having seen to doing your part in painting the side of the ship green, you go back to your cabin and check on your cousin – he is not in his bed.

You make a quick run of the ship, fearing the worst…just to find Horonno sitting at a table with a large cup of ale in his hand.

He merely looks up at you, before nodding toward another large cup of ale that is sitting in front of him, inviting you to join him.

What will you do and say?

You accept the invitation and sit in front of your cousin.

You sit in silence as Horonno drinks his own drink.

> “…I regret asking”

That’s all he says after almost 10 minutes of silence.

You…nod. There isn’t much to say.

You raise your mug, in an improvises cheer, before speaking.

> “No one could have fought…whatever it is that came out from the earth, Horonno. We both saw it..”

You bring a hand to your side, the phantom pain from last night still lingering. He notices your gesture and nods, in silence

> “Just…promise me this Rhogar. One day, we will give our family a proper burial”

You doubt that you will be able to grant his request in your lifetime, but nod nonetheless.

You both raise your mugs in a silent farewell to your family, and drink.

I call this session to a close.

Thanks to all people that partecipated. We had up to 13 players voting at once, by my own count, which I consider a record.

I tried to keep a much quicker pace than normal to simulate the "under pressure" effect of the situations being described - opinions in that regard are appeciated.

What have you achieved today:
> You have reunited with your family
> You have met Sheira's mother
> You have witnessed (a part at least) what happened to Valyria and what destroyed your family (flavor and mechanical benefits later on)
> You managed to survive without any mental breakdown (luck, but still counts)
> You managed to avoid get killed by the thing that destroyed your home

All in all, a good session. Opinions are welcome as always, I will hang around for 5-10 minutes and then call it a night.
>>

>>
>>4832114

But to be fair, regardless of how closely related Sheira might be to you and Rhaella might be to Viserys, all the Dragonlords are kind of related - Valyria lasted for 5 millenia.

Given nobody seems to have picked up on that, I won't specify whether what you saw was really what happened...or your mind going haywire and mixing reality with fantasy, in what was but a memory of Aurion to begin with, who might (or might have not) been half-intoxicated off the poisonous smokes released by the eruption of the Fourteen Flames and hallucinating.

Re-read the parts - "He moves his hand around, pointing at the broken sky (are those tails in the clouds?
[..] They do not look like anything you have ever seen) and then at the ground.
[..] You swear you could see something move out of the corner of your eye"

I'm not going to tell you which one is the correct answer. You choose for yourselves.

Are you saying dear uncle is an unreliable narrator?

Why I daresay them's fightin' words. As the slave peoples say. I care not for what cosmic powers a QM may have in their realm, en garde!

You think anyone's going to choose something other than super rape creatures from the under-earth? I'd considered that memories of a madman are often fragmented and distorted but it could just as well be true. We won't know unless we go there ourselves.

Bad ideas are a go?
>>
>>4832219
Make my day. En Garde.

But seriously, if you wish to find out you can vote to visit Valyria later on. You might find a boatload of treasures..and likely die from whatever was released by the Doom, be it a monster from the underground or poisonous gases.

shame the QM lost interest quick
>>
>>4832223
I have the perfect plan. We get a bunch of rafts and make a big boat bridge and have a line of slaves playing telephone and the furthest one out reports what he's seeing. Then we don't even have to go there at all. Just some tens of thousands of slaves and a bunch of leaky logs lashed together.

Man I'm so smart, there's no way this could not work out.

It just bums me out that we'll probably never know. Unless we're going to transition into a "create your own house" style and be all dynastic so four hundred years later a daring young lad can venture into the ruins of Valyria and slap Euron's shit for looting at the same time.

But that would probably be years of real time. Man. Curiosity is a rover and a bitch.

This might not have been the best idea you ever came up with.

This is the thought that jumps at the forefront of your head as you avoid a sword strike from Gareth.

In your drunken haze you thought it would be a good thing to challenge not just Adam or Gareth to a training spar, nor both of them at the same time. Oh no, you needed glory apparently, and so you are fighting the Giant, the Bastard and the Last Son (Humfrey) at the same time.

Still…you have to admit that you are loving this.

The thrill of combat.

> Fighting (Fencing) Test – 20 vs 11 (Combat Defense – CD)
> Great Success! Two Degrees of Success!

You bolt beneath Gareth’s strike and get inside his guard.

The man is good, you’ll grant him that. As soon as you made it inside his guard, he tried to strike your lightly armored head with his own armored one.

You are just better.

> Damage: 10 [(4 Agility + 1 Valyrian Steel)*2 Degrees of Success] – 2 (AR – 2 Piercing) = 8
> Gareth Health: 15 – 8 = 7

You stab him with your stiletto in the shoulder joint, causing the giant of a man to release a groan of pain, before attempting to kick you away.

You roll with it and let him.

> Agility Test – 19 vs 15 (DC)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

The kick makes you stile back, but having prepared yourself it doesn’t cause you any damage and you manage to raise your left-hand dagger in a guard position

Just in time, apparently…

> Fighting Test (Fencing) - 16 vs 14 (CD)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

…for Adam strikes you with his Small Sword.

> Damage: 3 (4 Agility – 1) – 1 (AR) = 2
> Rhogar Health: 12 – 2 = 10

You partially catch his strike and deviate it with your dagger, but before you can retaliate an enraged Gareth attempts to hit you with a wild slash of his longsword.

> Fighting (Long blade) Test – 12 vs 14 (CD)
> Marginal Failure! One Degree of Failure!

The pain makes him slow, his rage makes him predictable. It’s child’s play for you to avoid his first strike and the following ones.

> Fighting (Long Blade) Test – 8 vs 14 (CD)
> Greater Failure! Two Degrees of Failure!

The last member of their trio apparently thought this would be a good moment to attempt a sneak attack, hitting you from behind – Humfrey might be a great warrior by Westerosi standards, but compared to a true scion of Old Valyria, these barbarians know nothing of fighting.

> Fighting (Fencing) Test – 14 vs 11 (CD)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

…and you prove this to be true, avoiding the strike by jumping to the ground, before making a quick rotation and kicking out his legs from below.

> Damage: 5 [(4 Agility + 1 Valyrian Steel)*1 Degree of Success] – 2 (AR – 2 Piercing) = 3
> Gareth Health: 12 – 3 = 9
>>
End of Round 1. Writing Round 2.
>>
>>4833233
They are many, but you are better.

The blood of Old Valyria that courses through your veins makes you something more than merely human...

> Fighting Test (Fencing) – 11 vs 14 (CD)
> Marginal Failure! One Degree of Failure!

…and it clearly shows, for the moment Adam tries to strike you with his small sword, you make a back jump before turning and quickly punching the young man squarely on the nose, sending him clashing to the ground. It appears his companions have decided to give you no quarter – they might be nothing more than barbarians, but even they understand the only way they can defeat you is through superior numbers.

> Fighting (Long Blade) Test – 13 vs 14 (CD)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

You move backward, trying to avoid Gareth’s next strike, but the tip of his sword manages to catch your left arm

> Damage: 5 (Attletics + 1) – 1 (AR) = 4
> Rhogar Health: 10 – 4 = 6

You suppress a groan of pain and move aside, attempting to make the Giant pay for daring to strike you.

> Fighting (Fencing) Test – 10 vs 14 (CD)
> Marginal Failure! One Degree of Failure!

Humfrey attempts to take advantage of your temporary distraction, but the older man miscalculated.

His prize? A flying kick to the face that sends him reeling back.

Adam is slowly attempting to stand up, Humfrey is steading himself on the wall, Gareth is clearly bleeding from the shoulder and his right arm is shaking from the pain.

You are hurt yourself, but the sight of your bloodied visage as you raise your stiletto and knife is one to send chills down a grown man's spine - a glint of madness dancing in your eyes as you prepare to dash forward once again.

Will you continue or call it a draw?

You observe your enemies – Gareth the Giant, currently having troubles holding up his own longsword and looking at you with wary eyes; Humfrey the Last Son, standing only thanks to the support of the wall, holding his broken nose with a hand and keeping up his guard while analyzing your stance with eyes befitting a veteran; and last but not least, Adam the Young, slowly rising to his feet and eyeing you with what you would guess is a bit of fear in his yes.

You do the only thing a proper Lord of Valyria would do in this case

You laugh at your enemies.

> Persuasion (Intimidate) Test – 29 vs 27 (DC)
> Rolled 27 + 2 due to Blood of Valyria
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

> “Bravo Westerosi! You fight well! …but it is time to get serious. Allow me to show you how a scion of Valyria deals with his enemies!”

You flick the blood off your stiletto, visibly unnerving Gareth, before dashing forward while screaming the warcry of your dynasty – “Ashes to Ashes!”.

> “I yield!”

You stop in your tracks hearing this, and look at the source of the cry – Adam Hill.

The young lad has thrown his short sword and shield to the ground and is holding his side with one hand, putting the other one in the air.

Seeing this, Gareth Umber makes a noise akin to a groan, and nods before imitating his companion and throwing down his longsword and shield.

You turn toward the last Westerosi standing between you and victory – Humfrey Sarsfield.

> “Your companions surrendered, Hunfrey. Let’s see who is the better fighter – the heir of the Belaerys, or the Last Son of Sarsfield”

You assume the same pose you adopted at the beginning of the fight – right foot extended backward, left-hand knife at the ready to parry a strike, stiletto aimed at his heart.

> “Here I come, Last Son!”

Before you can take two steps, the Westerosi has thrown down his weapon and is rising both hands in the air in a gesture of surrender.

> “I yield, Rhogar..I admit I thought you were crazy in challenging all of us at the same time, but I see that your arrogance has a basis in reality”

You slowly put away your own weapons, before speaking.

You look each of them in the eyes, before speaking

> "It was a good spar, my compliments to each of you. My trip to Westeros would certainly have been a worthwhile one, even if I had only found you three. Alastor had a good eye in finding each of you."

You put your hand out and, one by one, shake their own.

> “We will train together again – it is good for all of us, for I can be exposed to new fighting styles, while you three begin to learn how to deal with the native fighting styles of our soon-to-be enemies”

They all nod, for there is wisdom in your words.

As you dismiss them, you hear cheers from all around – apparently a good chunk of the Westerosi warriors aboard the ship came to witness their employer fight.

You bow, before hearing more cheers coming from the other side of the ship, as well as from the two ships nearby the one you are standing on – it seems your fight has attracted the attention of the Volantene as well, curious to witness the fabled martial strength of the patricians of the Freehold.

By the volume of their applause, you did not disappoint.

You take out your stiletto and knife, rising your weapons in the air – the Valyrian Steel reflecting the sunlight in a way that only it can do.

After cleaning yourself (and getting a mug of cold ale), you manage to track down Maester Yandel, so as to ask him how to make use of a glass candle.

He appears quite surprised at your request, for he was under the impression all Valyrian nobles knew at least the basics of the Higher Mysteries. You..somehow explain that you always were more inclined toward statecraft and martial pursuits than scholarly one. A disappointed look appears on his face, but it quickly evaporates as you show him the candle itself.

Roll me 2D6 for Knowledge Test.

NOTE - I track loyalty using my own homebrewed system; this hidden stat comes into play during battles, as well as when there is a chance someone might betray you for a better offer, and when you make unreasonable requests.

> Knowledge (Magic-Divination) Test – 10 vs 10 (DC)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

It takes a while.

More than you expected actually, but in the end you managed to learn the basics of the usage of the glass candle – how to light it, how to focus your mind so as to receive messages…you do not pretend to be a master, for you cannot (for example) send messages of your own, use the far-sight etc, but you can now use to keep in contact with your family, at least.

That evening you sit down in front of the candle in your cabin (alone as instructed) and attempt to clear your mind…

It takes but a few minutes for you to feel the world fade away, and as you open your eyes, you find yourself sitting at a table in a room similar to your uncle’s private studio in your old family home.

Except that you do not pay attention to any of those details, for all your attention is drawn to the man sitting in front of you – your uncle, Aurion Bealerys.

“Hello nephew

He says, before waving his hand and causing two mugs of Ale to appear on the table.

“It’s not real…but it’s real enough”

A simple smile, and your uncle begins to drink from his cup of…whatever that is. You imitate him.

“Our reunion was…bad. It didn’t go nearly as well as I had hoped it would. To tell the truth, it could have gone far worse, had you not stopped me after I struck our ally…”

He is silent for a moment, allowing you the time to take in your surroundings – it’s..it’s like you remembered, with the books piled up to the roof, the fireplace lit…so many memories…

You uncle observes you, and sighs. This catches your attention, for before he can speak, you reply..

What do you wish to tell your uncle?

> “You are right uncle. None of us was in a proper state of mind. I hoped it would have gone better too…but can’t always have what we wish, can we?”

He raises an eyebrow and nods

“Indeed nephew. So imagine my surprise when I left for our home to save what was left of our family…and found out later that you had not only survived, but run West, instead of coming East to meet me. Care to explain?

You take a deep breath and observe him. He’s studying you, as if trying to read you.

In the end, he’s family – for Balerion’s sake, he’s the only reason your father is alive.

You owe him this much

> “They…the Faceless Men, tried to kill me, Horonno and Urrax in Lys”

Strangely he doesn’t seem surprised, merely nodding and gesturing you to continue.

> “They killed him...Horonno’s friend. We were both heavily wounded, outnumbered…and not knowing who to trust, we headed West”

You both fall silent after this, for there is not much to add – you went West out of necessity…and it paid off.

“I have received your messenger, you know that. What you do not know, is the headache you have given me”

At this you look up – Aurion looks at you with steely eyes, deadly serious

“Due to your actions, I have only two options left – get along with what you negotiated, or renege on it. In the first case, you are forcing a duty upon me that I did not ask – to lead a reformed Council, to begin the Reconquest. In the second option, Volantis will break off relations with us once they find out your little ruse, and likely demand your head. What would you have me do?”

He raises a hand to stop you from speaking, and continues

“The Eastern half of the Freehold is in ruins. The Ghiscari cities have killed off their governors and are claiming independence. Qarth has not wasted time in mobilizing and seizing our trade networks from us – only that of your betrothed remains active as far as I know, thanks in no small part to the Imperial protection. To the West…I think you can tell me more about that, considering that I found out recently not only that my two kinsmen are alive, but that you are headed East atop Urrax and at the head of a force numbering almost 40 000 men. So..if by the Treaty you negotiated, as well as by the laws of the Freehold I am the Patriarch of our Dynasty, report”

What will you say?

Afterwards I proceeded to Volantis and found the city filling with refugees and Triarchs ready to declare themselves the heirs to Valyria and make their own empire in our apparent graves. The treaty was the easiest and safest way bind and secure their loyalty, there will be concessions to make to them for their support but considering that peninsula is no more changes will be inevitable. I don't think we should take an aggressive approach. There has been much talk of bringing the family together, would be bad to facture any good will we have gained. We need to be bringing Dragonlords together, not pushing them apart.

> The west could have become just as chaotic as the east, if not more. Volantis has ambitions of a great empire, and while her Triarchs profess loyalty to Valyria and its dragonlords they would no doubt take whatever chance is given to them to assert their supremacy. Lys was Chaos personified, looters and assassin tried to kill Horonno, Urrax, and I. Not any assassins but professionals, from the cult in Braavos. And when their assassination failed they spoke of interesting thing, of perpetrators responsible for the Doom, they have promised their aid in killing whoever it might be. I also burned the Lysene fleet for the actions of the looters and opportunist. The Three Sisters are the opposite of Volantis, they have no wish to be part of Volantis's empire and had I not made the agreement there would be war between the Free cities right now. But to get back on track, why did I go west instead of east? After the events of Lys I was left injured, a bolt in the arms does that to somebody(jest). Horonno was left unconscious, and his companion dead. Urrax had his fair share of injuries and wounds. I had no desire to stay in the east, who knows how many assassins were waiting in the other Free cities, or whether the Triarchs and Magisters would rope me into politics for their gain all while I was injured. So I decided to go west, where none of that would be an issue and I could recover in peace. And I would say that the decision has paid off, I've recruited and wealthy and reliable ally, but most importantly loyal, and I would say loyalty in these times is worth more than gold.

>The Ghiscari cities have killed off their governors and are claiming independence.

I was re-reading this and it gave me pause. We should something about and deal with it fast and harshly. Demand those responsable being handed over, and tribute from each city. Hopefully we first refuses do we can make an example out of it, with more than one dragon the better. I don't think we can keep them under our direct control for now so nominal independence in exchange of tribute (gold, slaves and food) should work best for us for now.

You take a moment to reorder your thoughts, before answering the question.

> “To put in few words what I’ve seen in the West…potential chaos. The Volantene have great ambitions and were in the process of re-arming when I arrived in the city. Their “Triarchs” profess loyalty to Valyria and proclaim that the Freehold yet lives…and yet if one reads the treaty they signed, it contains a lot of “ifs” and “to be revised later”.”

Your uncle nods, before speaking up

“In other words, the leaders are loyal in name only. What about the people?”

> “The people celebrated our arrival in the city like..I have been to Volantis before uncle. This was different. It felt…grander, if that makes sense.”

“Grander? Likely relief at seeing your dragon. Let me think”

He makes a small gesture with his hand and a map unfolds in the air, while a small dragon symbol appears of Elyria and a question mark appears on Volantis

“So. We have a citizenry that might or might not be truly loyal to the Freehold, but who will likely follow whomever can lead them…and a leadership that is very likely to be out only for themselves, yet appears willing to profess loyalty so long as there is the potential we could force them to obey. Little to work with, but enough.”

He stands up, and as he waves his hand more symbols appear on the map – a smaller dragon substitutes the question mark on Volantis, while new, smaller questions marks appear on all the major cities and locations outside Volantis immediate area of influence

“What about the other cities? You will have visited other places on your way back East. Also, I heard Rhaella call you by a new title – “Archon of the Stepstones”. Care to explain that?”

What will you say?

Glad you're back, QM.
>>
>>4837634
>Yes, on our way back from the West we diceided it would be best to stop and secure the Stepstones, they sit in a important strategic locational and possession of them would prove vital to our goals, it would serve to remind the cities that a dragon sits a days fly away. They were garrisoned by soldiers who were eager to serve, and one can never have enough soldiers. And not to mention the islands were sure to become a warzone and pirate hub if the situation in the west deteriorated even more or if we hadn't taken control of them. Our allies the Ryenes will also help in securing and solidifying our possession of them

continuation below

>Lys was chaos when I left, assassins and looters tried to kill us, I burned Lys's fleet for that mistake and I managed to pry information form the Braavosi assassins regarding the perpetrators of the Doom. Word from the three daughters was that they were prepared to unite and fend of any attacks made by Volantis. The northern cities(Norvos, Lorath) I have little information about.

"No beside rumors and what most know i didn t unfortunately, and there is a reason for it. My plan was to gain a powerbase in the east, in Essaria while also gaining wealth through trade. But thanks to my allies in Westeros i took an oppurtunity. The stepstones garrisons and their families, where left alone and they where famished. I decided to help them, and offer to enter in my service. And soon i became their Archon. They now look at me well and the news of what i did have spread. In westeros with my allies, i didn t rest idle either. Erudite men follow me, as well heavy armored knights and several mercenaries. With me being in good terms with Volantis and with having the stepstones control, i can create a line of trade between us and the west. It might not be profitable as the ones with far Yi ti, but it will help us."

"In regard to Volantis, Horonno has also help me for better understand the political situation. We where almost overwhelmed by requests of marriages, but the three families of the city are the main powers and they are all interested in us. Fights between us are simply suicidal, blood for new families is needed as well eggs for new broods. > “On our way back East we decided to secure the islands. They..”

“Any particular reason?”

The interruption catches you by surprise, the question even more so…it takes you but a second to recognize what is happening though – your uncle is thoroughly testing your political acumen.

> Persuasion (Charm) Test – Rolled 21 vs 21 (DC)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

You point to the Narrow Sea on the floating map

> “Regardless of the current drop in trade, control of the North-South trade lanes will be vital in the long-term. Controlling the Stepstones would have given us an excellent bargaining chip when it came to treat with the Free Cities.”

Aurion nods, gesturing with his hand for you to continue. You notice that another dragon, this one with a small red lion beneath it, has appeared on the Stepstones – the message is clear.

> “Moreover, the islands would have helped us maintain direct contact with our Westerosi allies – the Reynes. A great house in the western half of the continent…but you already knew all of that, uncle”

He merely nods, but you notice a small smile on the side of his mouth

“And so you managed not only to ensnare the garrisons of the islands into following you, but managed to get the backing of barbarians to do so, which would have meant no proper Valyrian blood would have been shed, had it come to blows. Well done nephew…really well done.”

He stands up and moves close to the map, yet another symbol – a small red lion beneath a white dragon, symbol of your dynasty – appearing over Castamere.

“…I have never approved of your connections in the West, Rhogar. Not because they might be bad people…but because we are Dragonlords. Our very blood sets us apart from our fellow Valyrians, mind you non-Valyrians. We have the innate capacity to connect with our Dragons…and various other gifts, among which is a relatively widespread propension for magic. Life is short enough as it is, to squander it not in pursuit of nobler goals but playing king of the savages..well, you got my point”

You feel conflicted. On one hand you hate how Aurion is speaking of the people you consider akin to a second family. On the other hand..you have never seen this side of your uncle. You always thought his was more of a judgement merely based on…simpler reasons.

You owe Alastor this much.

You stop – Aurion is smiling, this time clearly as day

“It is a poor ally one that would allow his own superiors to besmirch you. On the other hand, it is a poor ally one that cannot give you enough reasons to stand up for him. I know of your connection to the Reynes of Castamere nephew – Viserys and I might not have always gone along, but are still brothers, just as you are still my nephew. I would have been a very poor older relative, had I not checked on my own flesh and blood from time to time. So you are in their debt..we all are, for helping you. My question now is what did they ask in return?”

What will you say?
> Write-in (You can attempt to sell Aurion the idea that a faithful ally in the West could be useful – note that he starts with a -3 to any attempt to get him to get involved with what he literally sees as beasts or “savages”. This is reduced to 0 due to the blood debt he has toward them for saving you).

>They want their rivals burned and themselves installed as kings. Their area is also renowned for it's gold, both quality and quantity. If they're in control of that gold then they'll make excellent and stable trading partners. It might even breath some civilization into them.
>>
>>4837792
> They asked for help in securing the throne of the Kingdom of the Rock and a marriage between one of their princesses and one of our family. The first is simple enough, the second more complicated more for persona reasons than any other. Regardless they are a worthy and valuable ally. They will provide a market with which to trade with and help the Stepstones grow, they are rich and they are loyal. Most importantly their loyalty would be assured for decades to come. They aren't like the Magisters and Triarchs of the free cities, they need no elections every so often to male sure they keep their power. The dragons alive can probably be counted with 2 hands, we need men uncle and the free cities and their citizen and mercenary armies are fine and all but the Westerosi have been fighting constant wars forever, the veteran men they could provide would be invaluable to our cause. Because undoubtedly there will be lots of fighting to be, the rebellious Ghiscari, barbarians from the east coming out of their hiding place now that Valyria is gone, any of the cities that might think to go against us, the Sarnori possibly. Our dragons can't be everywhere, and even if they were we can't always burn the land we mean to rule. We need men to spill our enemies bloods where our dragons cannot, wealth to rebuild what was lost, and loyalty to ensure no betrayal.

>"They want to overthrow their rulers. They are gathering allies and working for ensure they have the means to do so. Beside the region being rich and the fact that the Reynes would develop it further Westeros is a land of no one. The only true danger to it are the Targaryens, beside that future conquests can be easily achieved thus creating a stronger ally or ... vassal in the future that can provide us great aid. And i have intentions to at least talk with the exiled dragonlords. If we can bring them in our family we would have better odds in gaining new eggs and new members."

You do not reply immediately.

This..might be the one chance you get to actually shape your uncle’s opinion of your Westerosi allies, and you better not waste it.

> Persuasion (Charm) Test – 28 vs 21 (DC)
> Great Success! Two Degrees of Success!

> “They asked help in securing the throne of the Kingdom of the Rock…and a marriage between our two families”

Your uncle looks like he is about to reply, but you quickly interrupt him, surprising you both

> “They did not specify when and with whom uncle. Alastor..the patriarch of their family, hinted that he would gladly call me his son-in-law, but he left ample wiggle room. They are a rich, powerful family uncle – their Lordship might be small and extremely sparsely populated by our standards, but the only real limit they have, as far as men go, is the amount of mercenaries available in the area”

“Are you trying to tell me that these “Reynes” literally sit on a mountain made of gold?”

> “..the only gold mine in Westeros larger than the one sitting beneath Castamere is the one the Lannisters sit upon – the house they asked our help in overthrowing”

Aurion quickly raises a hand to stop you, and look to the map with new eyes, deep in thought.

It is only after a good 10 minutes have passed that your uncle finally speaks

“…if, and only IF…we were to help them secure control of the area, I can see why you would want to tie them to us. We have lost our Eastern trade networks Rhogar. But THIS…I can work with this. Control of the north-south trade lanes in Western Essos, monopoly of new markets in Western Westeros, far away from any potential competitor..we could easily finance a reconquest with this nephew. I have only two questions for you – were you planning this all along? And how far ahead have you planned in this regard?”

It’s an easy question for you to answer – after all, this commercial alliance formed the backbone of your plans

> “This would have been the key for any plan I had to tell the truth uncle..all I had, before Sheira found me, was a motley assembly of garrison troops and some odd-thousand mercenaries from Westeros. Still, I managed to convince some traders and learned men to follow me East, in order to attempt to maximize any advantage we could have had over our rivals”

He nods.

“You have done well nephew. Really. “

You smile inwardly – it has always been exceedingly rare for your uncle to give out compliments, even to his own children..much less you.

“Now, do you have any question of your own?”

> “Uncle..tell me the truth – how bad are things over there?”

You have never seen your uncle Aurion like this – all the liveliness seems to leave his eyes and the smile he had a second ago disappears.

“…I think it’s better if I show you”

A wave of his hand, and you witness a scene out of your worst nightmares – Elyria was always a lovely town, bustling with trade at its docks, and yet…it was famed for its natural beauty. Its architects had done an incredible job in building the city in such a manner that it blended with its landscape, almost giving the impression that it was just meant to be there.

And now…the docks are in bad shape, as if they had recently been repaired just enough to be functional. The city itself is bursting with people..except the majority of them appear to be refugees. You witness scenes that you will be difficult to forget – from a man with hollow eyes that jumps in the churning sea, to motherless children begging in the street corners.

> “…how many of us survived? I mean..of the 40s”

“I don’t have a precise number. I can tell you that we don’t even reach that number – 40. Dragons..counting mine, Urrax and Neltharion, we might reach 7. But that includes 2 that are too young to really carry a rider…”

You slump down on the chair, feeling as if the ground beneath your feet just opened.

Forty. Less than that, out of a total population of over 450.

This is…calling it a disaster doesn’t even begin to describe it.

That’s without even considering the incredibly small amount of dragons left…

“I had the same reaction Rhogar. Do not worry for appearances. I can easily guess what thoughts are going through your mind right now…we are fucked”

Your uncle swearing briefly snaps you out of it, just due to how rare was for him to let go of appearances.

“The only good news I carry is that we…and by we I mean us and the Soranyen, are the most numerous group, once you combine us together. Which brings me to the next point I wished to discuss with you – marriage.”
>>
File: Rhogar and Shiera.jpg (373 KB, 1468x700)
373 KB
373 KB JPG
You look at him as if he had lost his mind, given the sudden change of subject from what he just showed you. But before you can voice your thoughts, he continues

“Rhogar. You do not know how lucky you are, that the woman you love is still alive. Look at me. Look at your father. Look at Sheira’s mother. For Belarion’s sake, look at Horonno! We all lost the people we loved. We…all of us suffered and still suffer from what happened.”

At this he looks to the side…and you could almost swear you saw his eyes sparkle, but it might have been your imagination

“What matters is that we need to rebuild, and fast. There are 35 000 people coming here with you from Volantis. I am under no illusion that they have orders, “just in case” they find you lied to the Triarchs. We need to restore our strength…where possible. It is for this reason that as the Patriarch of our Dynasty, order you to go forward with your marriage.”

You can only nod – all fighting spirit has left you after Aurion has forced you to begin to understand the gravity of the situation

“Your father…Viserys, is healing. Slowly, but surely. Rhaella never leaves his side. I am aware of their past history…and so are you, I suppose. If not, it’s not my place to tell you that story. Just know that I will push for my younger brother to marry the matriarch of the Soranyen Dynasty once he recovers enough”

> “But that..I would become my own father in-law! That’s”

He slams a fist over the table, startling you.

“Do you think I do not understand the implications of our situation?! I do, all too well – we are on the verge of extinction. To even recover a modicum of stability…to survive as a family, we’ll have to do things we hate, things that we would never envision otherwise.”

You can only nod, submitting to his logic. Still..there is something that is deeply unsettling in the way he said the last part

What will you do?

The situation is shit. No other way to put it. This is a free write-in to suggest plans, or anything you might want to speak with Aurion before the connection between you two fades.

> I don't know what history they had, but that doesn't matter right now. Father is in a delicate situation as we all are, suggestions are fine and all but no marriage should be by force or by pressure. It would only lead to resentment and thats the last thing we need. For my part I plan to marry Sheira as soon as I can, and its not all dark wings dark words, both Horonno and Sheira's brother can marry and expand the family, because at this point our 2 families are basically one. Plus it's not out of the ordinary that a dragonlord take more than a single wife. We mustn't make decisions out of desperation.

Moving on though, we should attempt to contact the Targaryens, they are our fellow Dragonlords, it would be good to know where they stand on our New Freehold or if they even want to be a part of it. Also seeing as we were just discussing dynastic concerns, it's worth mentioning that Gaemon Targaryen has a daughter. If they had other plans a marriage might make them more inclined to support our New Freehold."

Another thing is that we could take one more wife, Horonno could still get married, and we cant forget Sheira's brother. Plus Aurion.

Also I am not catching on to how their marriage would make us our own father in law lol. We would be siblings(law wise?) and Rhaelle would be our mother in law and step mother.
>>
>>4838194
Our reaction was a bit nonsensical. Maybe it's just uncommon to tie a dynasty so closely? It could lead to a merging which could have been a threat for the other 38 families.
>>4838184
What did you mean then QM? Was it more shock than breaking societal conventions?
>>
Since Elyria is full of refugees I recommend that aurion used the extra bodies to add to his army since their are probably plenty of men and who are angry and have nothing left too lose
>>
>>4838205
I guess they could be used to battle the slave cities in revolt. They would definitely need some training though. Although there might be a chance of mutiny if they are conscripted against their will. Another alternative is sending the to populate the region of Essaria.
>>
>>4838201
Shock. I can tell you as QM that they had an affair and were friends for a long time beforehand...without Aurion knowing, so this came out of the left field.
>>
>>4838205
>>4838211
We shouldn't mistreat our ethnic Valyrian population. They're going to be our core supporters in restoring the Freehold. Maybe establish welfare programs instead out of our own coffers.

Well one tried and tested method of generating work and giving an aimless population a sense of direction is the construction of public works. What about if instead of that, we bring those that are willing to come with us to Essaria? That could work? That they can be in the forming of a new Empire/Kingdom and all? That could be good, but also they might be sad because of how far they could go from their homes

These are refugees from Valyria itself and surrounding towns. Trust me you will get as many bodies as you want.

Actually begin to discuss how many people you wish to bring with you, since I'm writing with the idea of still heading for Essaria after Elyria - I have not seen any vote to change it, and Elyria is too small to host all of these people

You sigh. The situation is…well, dire doesn’t begin to describe it.

> “I’m sorry uncle. This entire situation is…it’s as if the entire world has gone to shit. Which it has”

Your poor attempt at humor doesn’t seem to really work, but Aurion still smirks, almost as if relieved by you attempting to react and not just limply accepting whatever he says.

He puts a hand on your shoulder before speaking

“Nephew…I know me and you have not always seen eye to eye in the past…but we are family Rhogar. And family sticks together. I may be the Patriarch of this family, but…I am but one man. My own brother is not in any shape to be of help; your cousin…he’s going through his own personal hell, is he?”

You meekly nod, remembering how Horonno has not been acting like himself in the past days

“You are the only one of our family that I can rely on right now, so I NEED you to be strong Rhogar. Now..the connection is fading, but I am open to suggestions if you have any”

You wrack your brain for anything useful – anything at all. In the end, you come up with two things

> “I’d let Rhaella make the first move. By right, she is the Matriarch of her own Dynasty and so outranks my father. She should make the first move, if we are aiming for legitimacy.”

Aurion nods, signaling you to continue

> “Regarding the refugees..Elyria is too small to be a center of power uncle. Let’s be honest and admit that the new capital of Valyria should be…well, not such a wreck. My original plan was to head for Essaria – it still is. We…me and Horonno, that’s it, discussed it extensively – small population, extremely large amount of fertile land, a rich trade route East-West…we negotiated with Volantis that they would send some of the refugees our way, so that we would have both citizens and soldiers, while they would have to take care of less people”

“Your idea…has merits. We cannot stay here forever. But at the same time we can’t simple abandon the Peninsula. I will convene what is left of the Council, try to get us in shape to receive you and your “guests” from Volantis. Still, we’ll discuss of this again Rhogar. Be careful in the meantime.”

Your uncle gives you a hug, and then everything fades to black.

You wake up in your bed, with a splitting headache.

What do you wish to do?
> Alcohol. Lots of it.

I'll be honest - I didn't expect anyone to pick it. If the majority picks the "Cthulhu" option, I'll roll on my Supernatural table. It could go from simply having hallucinations (which could actually unlock something good or bad), to actually meeting "something" out there.

It has around 10% of disastrous results, 20% very good results, and the rest is a mixed bag.

The disgusting sensation makes you double over, and you begin to spit out saliva, trying to get whatever it is that is coming up out of your body.

And yet…try as hard as you might, it takes an eternity for the black thing to slide out of your open mouth. You call it a thing for that’s the closest you dare to come to name it – black like the night, akin to a cut tentacle that refuses to die, and with a thousand eyes that seem…to force you to look into them…

Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

Your head hurts. It feels as if someone has taken a hammer and is beating on the inside of your brain

You faint.

When you came to your sense, you find yourself in the same spot you fainted. How much time has passed? What is this place?

And then…

An answer pops from somewhere within your brain, without you knowing it was there to begin with

> You stand at the crossroad.
“Crossroad to what? And..where?
> It’s the Crossroad. Here you choose.
“Choose what? I don’t understand…”

Marginal ??? One Degree of ???

The pain inside your head is enough to make you double down and scream

The feeling of moving without moving is something you have never experienced before..and yet you feel as if a door close behind you

> Good. Again.

“Again what?”

You ask…or attempt to, before noticing that only a muffled sound came out – reaching up with your hand you feel that you have no mouth.

You scream.

> It’s useless to fight it, you know?

You run. You pick the left turn and run.

The world takes on a blueish coloration, and the further you go down the Path, the more the colors blend together in a piercing whitelight. And yet…soon enough you feel that you have reached another crossroad.

Knowledge Test (???) – 16 vs ??? (DC)
Marginal ??? One Degree of ???

Everything comes to an end, sooner or later

The light recedes and you find yourself saddled with memories that you do not recognize, but that clearly contain you – you standing atop a hill, observing stairs that cut the feet of anyone that dares to make use of it. You did not make a noise, least you attracted the attention of what sits beneath the stairs; a calm discussion with a fair lady as two shadows battled with swords that flowed like water..and a dark labyrinth, much similar to the one you find yourself in right now.

You fall to your knees and draw breath from your mouth…until you realize what you have done and feel it closing again.

> Have you learned nothing?

You think…and you understand

Tell me – which Door?

> A cracked one.

How much more may I take?

> As much as you wish for. Be careful not to drink too much of the fountain of knowledge, little one.

You smile.

“I have enough, for now that’s it.”

The white sun smiles and a cracked door opens in front of you

Then step through, son of fire and ashes

And you do so.

You open your eyes and stand up from your bed.

There is nothing wrong around your, for you are in your room…and yet, you feel like you recall a seldom threaded Path, that leads to a hidden garden behind the Walls.

As you think of this, you perceive a dreadful, yet compassionate smile from a hidden Sun, and hear a single line through the entirety of your being

Already back, Son of Ashes?

The smile grows wider and more ominous by the second, so you quickly stop threading the footsteps leading to the Door.

You will be back. There is no hiding now, Son of Ashes

And deep down, you know he’s right.

Wait, What are you talking about QM? What source did they used? Also, I really wanna know what references were in those posts, guess I need some more IQ to understand them
>>
>>4838582
The devs said they developed all the lore for the game in-house. I call bullshit since there are quite a lot of bits and pieces that have always reminded me of more traditional occultism, including (for example) some from the Golden Dawn (the British occult society from the late XIX century). I might be wrong in this regards, for in the end all occult traditions trade the same concepts, but that has always been my impression.

For those interested, I'm using a mix of the "Cipher Manuscripts" and a "Commentary on Initiation into Hermetics" as my inspiration. Bardon's own book is too.."practical" to use as direct inspiration, but Rawn Clark commentary does.

Also, writing.

You go upstairs, mindful of your steps – both physical, as well as metaphysical.

Finding Horonno is but a simple act – after weeks spent on this ship, you have an intimate knowledge of its layout, as well as the favorite hiding spots of your cousin.

As you find him, he looks at you surprised

> “What’s with the scar?”

Wait. You look down on your left arm and sure enough – an small scar..more akin to various small scars put together to form a shape, has appeared on your forearm.

It is white, whiter than your already pale skin.

What do you wish to reply?
> Explain everything to Horonno

I hope I didn't go too far into "out of canon", but I felt like adding the possibility, for the players, to pursue their own independent "adventure" in the metaphysical, without needing to rely on spending XP.

Consider this another kind of sorcery, which might not cost you XP to study, but you have far less control over, far more to gain and far more to lose. Nothing forces you to use it, but it might offer many insights - even just talking to the Sun or others might give clues sometimes.

It's essentially an easter egg from the "Supernatural Table":
> 93 & 94 - The Sun takes notice
>>
>>4838608
Some of the best quests out there go wild with the lore. If breaking canon is what keeps you motivated then break canon, anyways that's the appeal of this time period.
>>
>>4838636

My thought process is this: you are an oddity in the string of fate. Aurion should be dead, the dragonlords in Lys should have been killed by the Faceless Men and there should have been no survivors from Valyria.

And yet, here you are.

In a world where magic exists, yet we do not know if Gods do exist, the Sun itself could very well be nothing but a metaphor that your mind creates to allow you to "interface" with your innate predisposition for Blood Magic and the "fire" which allows a Dragonlord to bond with its dragon.

it's up to you all to interpret what you saw, whether you want it to be nothing but how your mind reacted to being so close to such a magical clusterfuck as the Doom, or if you truly met with something "else".

How will you spend your 30 XP?

He might know something about it. Also he is a closed confident of us and our blood brother. Might as well talk.

>Write In
Talk with out priestess and see what she can understand from the dream, maybe the pantheon or one of our gods as decide to aid our family closely and ensure the Dragonlords remain ? (and with the disaster it would kind of make sense, less valyrian people > less worship). Also pray to one of the gods (maybe the one more closed to the description of the white sun, or let s see the options we have as well).

You may always ask to speak to the Sun. All you need is a moment of quiet and to firmly declare you wish to do so. Notice that a mortal's mind was not made to withstand that kind of pressure for long (in game terms, you will roll Will after the 2nd reply, and every time the DC will slightly rise, to reset after you let some time pass).

>>4838786
Would cost you 10 XP

>>4838754
Good ideas all around. If anons will vote for them, I'll include these in the next scene.

All I will say is that the White Sun can offer you much power, but is it worth the price? Or you could always attempt to best it in a game of wits like the other players managed to do (by sheer luck I'd say).

i consider it more an ability for move around the questions of others in the case of Rhogar, so he avoids direct confrontations in conversations. Which would force him to talk clearly since he is honest. Eitherway my first option is banking them. If that doesnt pass better spend all.

Oh come on, everyone likes a nice Ass.

Personally I think telling Horonno about it might be a bit much. He's already got a lot to think about. Hearing that Rhogar is possibly crazy - or even worse - actually talking to a god would just give him more to work through. Other than that it's pretty solid.

>>Write-in: Ask Maester Yandall and Daenerys (separately) if they've ever heard of The White Sun or anything of that nature, or if they recognise any of the motifs from our dream (but talk to them subtly - I'm not ready to share our little schizo adventure with them yet)

Loved today's session (was voting from my work IP). The fact that you've set this quest in the Century of Blood means you've got a lot of creative freedom and can try something a little different from the ASOIAF quests that have come before - today definitely delivered on that front. Almost makes me regret not voting for the Yi Ti or Carcosa options when we were first deciding where to go. Also makes look forward to finding out whether Shiera/Aurion have brought any interesting artifacts or allies with them from Yi Ti/Valyria.
I particularly liked the ambiguous nature of our experience.

>>4838651
>Will 3, Deception 3, Knowledge 3

I'll also back >>4838754 and his idea of setting up a regular routine describing how Rhogar spends his time. I wouldn't want this to be something Tagaros would spend a lot of posts talking about, more like a general idea of what we're doing in the background or between the moments described in posts.
>Starting a regular routine of athletics and sparring with our lieutenants
>Regular councils with our officers - imo we should alternate, one day eating dinner with the Westerosi officers, the next with the Volantene officers, another with the maesters and the priestess, maybe another with some of the common soldiers. And of course Horonno would have an open invitation to all. After dinner spend some time talking to whoever we ate with that night - getting their thoughts on their respective areas of expertise, getting a feel for the personalities, and building a sense of camaraderie.
>Get them brain gains - start reading our books. I'd suggest start with the book on Westerosi politics by Maester Yandel given he's in our entourage and I'm sure he'd be flattered by the interest. I don't want to skim the book - as we're reading through it we should be taking notes and comparing the points he makes against our understanding of Essossi politics to identify areas of similarity and contrast, as we go we can discuss the points raised with Yandell, Horonno and the other maesters to cement our knowledge.
>Regular flights with Urrax maximise our bond, improve his agility and keep him entertained

>>4838754
I wouldn't want to discuss the full nature of the dream with Daenerys and if it was truly a Valyrian god then I'd assume that Rhogar, being Valyrian born and raised, would recognise it a little more than we did. That being said, I do agree that we should get her thoughts on The White Sun and maybe tell her about some elements of our dream - there might be some knowledge buried in the more obscure lore of the church that can shed some light on what we're dealing with.

I am not sure if Rhogar knows fully all about it s gods, like every myth and religious story, i think that would be more something a scholar would know. It could even be that the god is testing him and didn t show it self to him. Like it s true form. Still who knows, and Rhogar can interpret it however he wants. (it s probably another deity disconnect from the valyrian pantheon, but we need to see)

I would say in times dire as this a man would probably consider it a sign of it s own gods if not divine. It probably depends on the man. But men in ancient times where more religious than now, and often wanted the favour of the divine be for war or peace.
>>
Doesn't even need to be a "god" in the traditional sense of it having worshipers.. There are probably lots of spirits and forces that were lost to time, sleeping, etc.
>>
>>4839547
>Spirits and Forces
Martin's too vague and obsessed with his weird "Death is meaningless and there's nothing after it." for that kind of thing. There's vague curses and prophecies for contrived self-fulfilling I Need Characters to Act This Way bullshit. Shadow babies, blood magic, resurrection, and Dany's miracle dragon hatching are the only real explicit supernatural things.

ASoIaF's world would be much more interesting if it decided what brand of fantasy it wanted to be.

You sit down in front of your cousin..the man who you consider a brother at this point, and talk.

You speak for a long time, relying the news regarding what Aurion told you, the situation in the East, your own plans and how it could all fit together.

You do not mention anything regarding your…dream, nor do you attract attention to the scar on your arm.

In the end there isn’t much to discuss – your discussion with Aurion was essentially an exchange of information and you do not wish to overload poor Horonno, who is still grieving.

And so you leave him to his grief, with a promise on his part to think about what you said and to give you some advice at dinner.

The next item on your “to-do list” is to meet Daenerys, the young priestess of Balerion that has joined your entourage, for you need answers about a certain dream.

You could swear you saw a cruel smile appear on the sun itself as you thought of your dream.

Trying not to think too much about the effects the toxic smokes permeating this stretch of sea are having on your mind, you quickly walk toward Daenerys’ cabin - you find her sitting quietly in her cabin, relaxing as she reads one of the many books she brought with herself.

A simple knock on the door and the young priestess looks up at you, before smiling widely.

> “My Lord. What brings you to visit your humble servant's private chambers?”

The young woman speaks, yet her smile reaches her eyes…and she winks at you at the end of the sentence.

> “I had…a dream, last night. It contained many symbols of a religious nature, so I thought you would be the most qualified to help me interpret them”

This is enough for her to drop the smiling façade and become serious.

What follows in more akin to an interrogation than a discussion, with Daenerys trying to make you remember everything from your “dream”, down to the minuscule detail.

You answer her questions to the best of your capacities, trying to remember your dream. But it is like trying to hold water – it just pours between your fingers, formless and yet there.

In the end even Daenerys gives you a small, shy smile and admits that you gave her very few elements to works with. She goes on to explain that Vhagar is the god of the Sun, but also of Fire and Heat in the Valyrian religion…and yet what little you remembered sounds nothing like the Valyrian god.

Moreover, it does not resemble anything she is particularly familiar with – her training at the Temple was quite extensive, but she does admit that her knowledge of the most…obscure divinities is lacking. For all she knows, it could be one of the myriads of gods worshipped in the East, or it could be something else altogether.

When she mentions this last part, she gets quite serious, before falling silent and taking your hand into hers

> “Please…be careful my Lord”

And you are found wanting, flawed like all men.

The Sun smiles its cruel, feral smile.

Perfect

A single comment, and yet its deep voice resonates through all of your being.

And then..you feel it – the infinite possibilities.

It’s like nothing you ever felt before – it’s the feeling of quiet certainty that comes with knowing that your will shall be done .

You stride forward, dressed only in your light clothes, with your stiletto and left-hand knife at your side. People step aside as you move forward – they part like the waves part in front of the row of your ship.

Urrax, sitting atop the extremely large ship’s top, does not even make a noise, but simply pushes down his head to allow you to climb atop..and then you take flight.

You have never felt such a strong connection with your dragon before – you’d usually need to guide him via commands, reins and legwork.
Not this time – you just think, and Urrax complies.

It’s almost as if you two were one.

You fly around the ships of the fleet, giving the Volantene and the Westerosi a nice view of who exactly they are following – a Dragonlord, a true scion of Old Valyria.

And then…you fly upward.

…until you break the wall of clouds, and witness something that you never witnessed before – the endless sea of clouds that stretches as far as the eye can see.

The cold at this altitude would kill a normal man, but you feel no cold thanks to your inner connection with Urrax…and your own will.

You scream just as Urrax releases an air-splitting roar.

And you dive downward, toward the fleet.

You can see it all – what is left of the Peninsula, the clouds, a couple of volcanos, once part of the Fourteen Flames, still erupting and standing alone amidst the waves as lonely islands..you see it all.

And through all of this, you feel divided – as if you were in two places at the same time, both atop Urrax and standing in an endless desert, beneath a smiling star.

You will be back, Son of Ashes

> You gained a temporary 1B to riding Urrax, which will fade over the course of this week.

And just like that, you are back to being just yourself, Rhogar.

You stop, feeling vertigo overtake you – breathing deeply to steady yourself, standing atop Urrax amidst the cheering crowd of the assembled soldiers on your ship as well as those nearby.

Humfrey Sarsfield, the Last Son of Sarsfield, comes forward as you prepare to dismount

> “A magnificent sight my Lord. I think the men needed something to lift their spirits…”

A look around you reveal just how right the officer is – the men around you seem almost spent, the oppressive mist and the lack of sun taking its toll on their mental state.

> Persuasion (Charm) Test – 12 vs 12
> Incredible Success! Three Degrees of Success!

You nod and drawing upon the fleeting remnants of your newfound connection to Urrax, give him a simple order. He takes off once more, positioning in the midst of the closest ships.

You stand tall and speak loudly, the water carrying your words

> “Men of Valyria! Westerosi! Glory, land and riches await us! Who shall follow me to claim them? Who shall join me for Gods, Glory and Country?”

The sight of a dragon unfolding its wings and unleashing a jet of flames in the air is something that would intimidate anyone, but in this case it’s nothing but awe inspiring for the men who follow you.

A loud cheer arises from the ship you just left – looking in that direction, you see your two bodyguards, Adam the Young and Gareth the Giant, screaming at the top of their lungs.

Humfrey joins them immediately afterward, soon followed by some of the men who followed you from the Stepstones, as well as the Westerosi knights.

It seems to die down after that, but the cheer is picked up by the Volantene men on another ship, and then another and so on – it seems your little stunt has had its intended effects, for when you push Urrax in a circle above the ships of the fleet that were close enough to hear you, you are greeted everywhere by loud cheers from the men.

You return to the main ship and once you touch the wooden ground, you find not just Humfrey and the Westerosi officers but also some that you are unfamiliar with – of clear Volantene origin – waiting for you.

> “A magnificent show, if I may say so”

Turning around to take the measure of the man who has just spoken, you see an older soldier at rest. His hair having gone gray from age (and not from the natural pigmentation of your people), he brings his fist to his chest and then pushes it outward, with an open palm.

> “Tessario, at your service my Lord”

You give him a nod, before making a quick round of handshakes with the gathered officers.

It appears that the aforementioned “Tessario” is an important member of the Expeditionary Forces the Volantene Triarchs have saddled you with, if the deference the others give him is anything to go by.

You spend the next few minutes exchanging pleasantries, before you invite him and his fellow officers to attend your War Council that evening, so as to “ensure proper communication between allies”.

Your proposal seems to take him by surprise, but the man gladly accepts both for himself and his peers with a smile.

A quick nod, and then you are left alone with Humfrey and your bodyguards.

You are on the outskirts of the Smoking Sea going to Elyria, just weeks after the Doom happened. Anons chose the option to "meet new friends" in an area well-known for magic fuckery. In-game the MC called..and something answered. Your choice whether it's Rhogar going mad, his innate magic predisposition taking shape, or he truly met something else "out there".

He hesitantly nods – you smile, since you now have him.

> "After all, we are all sons of Valyria. The blood we shed will become as one with the land. We march side-by-side for the same thing, don't we? Give it time. We will all look at each other as brothers, as family."

This…catches everybody by surprise, including the few Westerosi soldiers that came closer to eavesdrop on their officers talking.

> “Look at the men – the vast majority of them have nothing to return to, and of the ones that have someone to return to, I doubt many took up my cause due to mere monetary payment. No..what attracted so many was the promise of land, of a future for their families. That, I shall provide. And in doing so, they shall become citizens of the Freehold, sons of Valyria.”

Your words left Humfrey speechless for a minute, before he stood up straighter and brough his malled fist to his chest in an impromptu salute, soon followed by your bodyguards and by the few soldiers that heard you.

You can only smile – you promised these men a future, and so long as you shall deliver on said promise, they will follow you to the end of Planetos.

It is a couple of hours later that you finally manage to track down the three Maesters who joined your expedition, and find them in deep discussion in a small “common room” beneath the deck.

As you enter the room, Walys stands up and bends his head so as to salute you, soon followed by his older colleagues as they notice your appearance.

> “Master Rhogar, how may we be of service?”

You take out a small book – it is the booklet written by Maester Yandel regarding the “Politics of the Northern Kingdoms”.

The surprise is clear on his face, as well as the pleased smile that appears immediately afterward, having understood the reason of your visit.

> “I would have some questions regarding your treatise, Maester Yandel. That’s it, of course, if you are not too busy at the moment”

You can swear one could hear the smugness in his tone of voice as he replies

> “It would be my pleasure, my liege”

And so you come to sit with the elder Maester in front of you.

You sit down and open the small book – you did put simple bookmarks wherever you had a doubt.

> “I have read with pleasure your treaty,
Maester Yandel, but I happen to still have some questions regarding the most ancient houses, as well as the oldest period of time of Westeros”

Yandel nods, waiting for you to expose all your doubts

> Knowledge Test – 14 vs 8 (DC)
> Great Success! Two Degrees of Success!

> “I have noticed you reference the foundations of the “Hightower” in Oldtown, as proof of the ancient island being originally a settlement. I have traveled to Oldtown as you well know, as well around the vast lands of the Freehold. The stone reminds me of my people’s building techniques, which we employ for…well, anything, from the Roads to Old Valyria itself. And yet the fortress appeared quite alien to me, almost as if untouched by dragonflame. Add to this the fact that the Freehold records show only a small outpost to repair ships in the area, and this fact pushes me to ask your expert opinion.. if my ancestors did not create that outpost, then who did? And what implications does this have regarding the more ancient eras of Oldtown itself?”

The older man looks taken aback by your question – likely he expected some irrelevant question from an ignorant lord attempting to appear smart to his new servants.

It takes him some minutes to answer your question

“I am afraid that I do not know what to say, my liege. If you say your people did not build the fortress upon which the Hightower rests..then I can only posit someone else did. Do you know of other people who made use of the same techniques you Valyrians use to build their structures?”

You think hard…and an half-forgotten image comes to your mind – the battle of the Five Forts, which you witnessed from Sheira’s memory.

> “There is some kind of fortress-wall in the far north-east of Yi Ti, which I seem to remember is made of the same fused, unadorned stone. But that structure is thousands of years old Maester. For it to have been created by the same people who built the foundations of the Hightower, it would mean that once upon a time there was a culture that spanned the entire known world – a bit far-fetched wouldn’t you agree?”

He nods..and yet it seems the maester is actually considering what you just said, as if it was a true possibility

“Only the Gods know, my liege. All I can say is that Oldtown itself is extremely ancient – it was founded during the Dawn Age, predating the Long Night”

This catches your interest.

> “I have read about that event – many of the kingdoms and Houses you describe seem to derive some sort of legitimacy from their ancestors’ actions during that event. The Starks of Winterfell caught my attention, for they claim an unbroken descent from..”

> “Exactly. They claim thousands of years of unbroken, consecutive rulership. Other Houses do the same, such as the Hightowers of Oldtown, the Gardener kings, the Storm Kings…I have to ask – is there a foundation of truth in such claims? And if so, how did they achieve such stability? The Dynasties of my homeland claim stability, and yet we intermarry so often that in the end we might as well all share the same surnames, while at the same time there is a constant branching off of new families, as old ones go extinct in name if not in seed. Why are the Westerosi so..different in that regard?”

The Maester actually sits down and thinks for some minutes – it is not an easy question

“I can only expose you my own hypothesis, my Lord. I believe that there is a modicum of truth, however small, in their claims. In my years at the Citadel, I studied extensively the genealogy of the Kings of Westeros; I noticed that some…traits, appear almost constantly in certain older families. For example the golden hair of the Lannisters of Casterly Rock, the massive build and black hair of the Durrandons of Storm’s End…as well as the tendency of the Starks of Winterfell to produce wargs.”

You look at him with a strange expression, for he begins to explain what a warg is. The lecture continues for some half an hour, until you finally broach the topic you came to him for – the symbolism of the Sun in different cultures.

You introduce the question by pointing out how certain Houses (such as the Karstark) have a white sun in their sigil, while many nobles in the East have a black one. The Maester explain the symbolism…but you can’t draw much from his lecture.

All you know is that the sun has always symbolized both rebirth, but also the end of life (sunrise/sunset), and that a white sun is not a common symbol in Westeros. The only references Yandel could think of was a ship from House Farwynds of Lonely Light, whose captain claimed to have witnesses a “white sun” in his dreams as he headed West – the poor lad came back mad, spouting nonsense, before dying due to the harshness endured during his doomed trip.

Not much to go on apparently…

You spend another hour or so of your time with the Maesters, discussing other topics of interest, from warfare to politics. You made a point to ask if the Maesters knew of anything that could be used against a dragon – while your question raised eyebrows, they could not provide you an answer on the spot and so you all adjourned with the promise on their part of looking into it.

The rest of the day passed relatively quickly, until the time comes for you to meet with what many have begun calling your “War Council”, due to it being composed exclusively of military men.

Even though..maybe the name will change now that Daenerys has begun to occasionally join you at the meetings (officially in order to offer “spiritual guidance”, unofficially to help you distract the men and thus make them more malleable). You laugh inwardly at your own joke before opening the session.

It is a relatively simple affair to get to know the officers in charge of the Volantene forces – Tessario Vaelaros is apparently the man in charge (or at least their representative at this council), and his four underlings flank him, occasionally quipping in the discussion.

You focus primarily on the topics at hand – you communicate that you received communications from the Head of the Council (Aurion) and proceed to communicate on the “information and orders he gave you”.

The people are silent as you expose the damage the Doom caused in the East, as well as the rebellions taking place in the old Ghiscari territories (of note is Tessario’s expression when you mention this..) and the sheer destruction the tsunamis visited upon the coastal regions.

The discussion picks up when you ask for their opinion regarding the best way forward, and by the end of the evening there seems to be an agreement on three potential path forward:

> a) Your original plan – debrief with Aurion and the (hopefully reformed by the time you arrive) Council in Elyria, before taking on the task of opening a safe path north, in order to reach Essaria. You will primarily focus on stabilizing the frontier and restoring a modicum of internal stability in the Freehold by managing the settlement of refugees and the economic aspects of trade (via control of the Stepstones and the trade route passing through Essaria). Your main enemies will be the Dothraki, (potentially) Sarnor and the smaller Ghiscari kingdoms in the grasslands. Expect potential conflict with Qohor as well.
>>

>>4840249
> b) The Volantene idea – debrief with the Council, but take the initiative and ask to be assigned the operational area between the territory of Volantis itself and the Ghiscari territories – you could then rely on reinforcements from both the Council and from Volantis once you restored safe communications along the East-West Valyrian Road. It would then be an easy task to veer north toward the Frontier (Essaria) or East to deal with the Ghiscari rebels, for there would be a direct path to constantly reinforce both yourself and Volantis. Your main adversaries will be the Ghiscari city-states, the rebels in the Northern Valyrian Peninsula and (later on) the Qartheen. Expect potential conflicts with Lys.

> c) The Westerosi idea – You have an army and the capacity to maintain communications across long distances. Your mobility is your strength, so use it – focus on recapturing coastal cities, and restoring order to the regions surrounding Slaver’s bay itself. You enemies shall be the Ghiscari (all of them), the Qartheen, Lys and potentially Gogossos.

> Write-in

You do not have to pick one, but your officers are looking at you to understand what your plans are moving forward. Note that the Westerosi will follow you by default, they just put forward their own ideas as requested.

Note also that any option not picked will be assigned to other commanders; you might be requested to offer aid in the future, and I will roll to determine how things will go on the fronts you are not in direct control of.

I think I may like this idea the best for the potential if gives us. Mobility is our strength, we should use it. Qarth was mentioned as the best place to conquer for trade. Given where our soon to be wives trade partners are located it would be best suited for our current direction. It would also keep us closer to Aurion and the rest of the family.

This wouldn't exclude us from making a trip to Essaria to set up relations and settle refugees would it? We could still potentially benefit from that area with out actually occupying it. Just visiting from time to time.

> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

And so you speak.

Oratory has always been one of your strong points…and it shows.

You expand upon your initial plan of moving North, after having a rendezvous with the Council. The Frontier of the Freehold is currently undefended, and it, like all the other areas that have risen in open rebellion, needs to be subdued, or helped, if still held by loyalists.

You explain to the Volantene how you went West on order of the Princeps of the Council, your uncle Aurion Belaerys, and gathered allies along the way, while also taking control of the Stepstones and humbling the Lyseni by burning their fleet at bay (this going extremely well with the Volantene, who already knew it..but to hear it from your own mouth is another thing).

To the Westerosi, you confirm your promise of free land and compensation for their service, while making sure to emphasize the words “free land”, “compensation” and “loyalty” – you do notice the look that Tessario is giving you…it’s one you know too well.

It’s the look of a son passed over in favor of his older siblings.

But everything has to come to an end, and so does the meeting…except that as everyone else is leaving, Tessario approaches you

> “My Lord..a word?”

You nod, and signal your bodyguards to leave as well

> “…is it true? Did the Council truly survive? And…what of your offer - does your it stand for all loyal citizens of the Freehold, or only for…some, as decreed?”

He’s looking at you with incredible seriousness.

You draw your breath and drink from your mug, so as to create the necessary tension.

After 30 seconds or so, when it’s clear Tessario will soon speak to break the silence, you finally speak.

> “I will not lie to you Tessario. The Council…we have all been badly mauled by the eruption of the Fourteen Flames. The majority of the population of the capital is gone, and so are many of the old guard”

Hearing this, he drinks heavily. You refill both of your mugs.

> “But. To answer your question, yes, the Council endures under the aegis of its Princeps, Aurion Belaerys, who led a relief force from Qohor to save whomever could be saved. The northern cities…Mantarys, Elyria, Volos and others, remained loyal to the last, but the never-ending stream of refugees is putting a strain on our resources. With the traitors in the West rising in rebellion in all but name, and the damned Ghiscari murdering their garrisons in their sleep, the Freehold is not in its best shape”

He looks down at his mug hearing this, before asking you the only question that matters.

“Can you truly restore the Freehold then, my Lord? I grew up hearing tales of the power of the Lord of Valyria – the Dragonlords. I have witnessed you atop your own dragon..so I got to ask. Can you truly defeat the enemies of our homeland, my Lord?”

That’s it.

You look him straight in the eyes and prepare yourself, letting anger show in your voice

> “Yes. There are still enough men who believe in the dream of Valyria to make the traitors rue the day they thought they could betray the Freehold. There is still enough power to burn to the ground all the ones who thought they could betray their motherland in its time of need. Magic and Dragons...but more than that, men such as you, a loyal son of Valyria”

At this he looks down, as if uncomfortable with the attention

> “The Emperor of the East owes a great deal to the Dynasties currently sitting on the Council. With allies in the West as well as in the East, and enough men, we can finally begin to end the Rebellion. Valyria has always rewarded its loyal sons…and has always punished its enemies and its traitors. By the time we are done with them, no one will ever think of rebellion again.”

You slam a fist on the table as you say the last piece.

You can clearly see a conflicted expression on Tessario’s face, before he speaks up once more

“My lord…I…I have something to say. I know I shouldn’t speak, but…we have orders. They are to determine whether you said the truth or not and act consequently to “restore the Freehold”

He scoffs loudly at this, the alcohol clearly getting to him

“But…if things are as you say, I would be a traitor myself if I did not follow the orders of the Council and its representative. The bloody Maegyr and Tagaros might think of Volantis as their home, but us Vaelaros have always been loyal sons of the motherland. My men...me...we are all loyal sons of Valyria. We all believed what they told us, that you were all gone, that Valyria itself was gone.”

> Persuasion (Charm) Test – 27 vs 26 (DC)
> Marginal Success! One Degree of Success!

You nod firmly

> “Within a week we shall reach Elyria, temporary seat of the Council. There we shall meet with the Council and its head, my uncle. I cannot make promises in his name, but I can promise you this – I will beat on your behalf to assure that you and your men are rewarded for your loyalty to the Freehold, once this bloody Rebellion is put down. Traitors are a dime a dozen, but loyal sons...they are worth their weight in gold and land. “

He puts down the mug and stands up, before taking your hand into his own and kneeling, clearly half-drunk thanks to wine and elation

“Thank you Lord. We…I shall not disappoint!”

You nod, understanding the gravity of the situation.

> “Valyria shall endure Tessario. We all, loyal sons of the Freehold, shall make sure of this.”

He can only nod at this, before standing up, saluting you and departing – you are sure to spread the news to the rest of his officers.
>>
And with this I call the session to a close.

What have you achieved in this and the past session?
> You have concluded the discussion with your uncle
> Gained some real intel regarding the situation in the East
> Met the White Sun and the Crow, and managed to beat the Sun at its own game.
> Met and discussed with Daenerys, the young priestess you picked to accompany you
> Discussed with the Maesters and learned some interesting fact regarding the symbology of the Sun in Westerosi cultures
> Given a show to the assembled fleet atop Urrax, and learned how the mechanics of interacting with the Sun works.
> Raised the loyalty of Humfrey, Gareth and Adam to yourself personally
> Discussed your future plans with your assembled officers
> Raised the loyalty level of the Volantene enough that - if they can witness for themselves the resurgence of the Council - they will place loyalty to Valyria above loyalty to their home city.
> Made the QM cry because you beat all the DCs and thus made him throw out his "oh-so-carefully" prepared option for when you failed to accomplish the conquest with your own forces.

So all in all, two good sessions that I'd almost consider one due to being so closely interconnected. Well done.

Thanks for partecipating, and see you all tomorrow for the next session. I will hang around for a bit to answer questions, but still - opinions, etc are appreciated.

I am often going with homebrewed content and systems (e.g. Battle, Loyalty, etc), so any opinion/critique/etc is welcome.

I really like this Quest QM, it's awesome.

I wanted to know, what's the system are you using for this quest?

Also, the table you used so we could meet some new friends, is it in the system corebook are we using or it's a homebrewed thing? Because I really wanna check it out (and if you have more homebrew stuff for this system, it would be awesome if you could post it if someday i give it a try with a group of friends)
>>
>>4840622
I'm using as base the ASOIAF rpg system. I'm integrating it heavily with the Sword Chronicles system as far as Sorcery is concerned and some of the minor features.

The rest (Battle System, Loyalty system, the Supernatural Table etc) is all homebrew that I created for my irl group and adapt on the fly for the Quest. The Sun is from a previous campaign I ran in 3.5 some time ago. I will post things as they become "obsolete" for the Quest, in the sense that it won't throw off the Quest if the players have a peek at it. Simply check the pastebin from time to time.

>>4840613
>the sun is still going to assrape our brain because anons always dig too deep, too greedily

I completely agree, but let me add..you do realize that it will still dig on its own, even without your intervention right? All of the 12 "Gods" you could have picked when you rolled have their own "thing".

The White Sun will always be with you - I thought it was clear when it said "There is no hiding now, Son of Ashes". It shall take and it shall give as I roll on its own table (the majority of results are minor things for flavor, e.g. you got "measured" and in return got a temporary boost to Ride, but there are some major possible results)

///

Now guys, we need to think about what we will do for military campaign. Essaria other than a main city it s small settlements and a lot of freeland. So space for refugees there is plenty.

And we are going to fight some dothraki vanguard raid groups, maybe Sandor (we could diplo them) and probably nearby ghiscari.
So we need.... wood and engineers. Wood because having stakes would really help our army against nomads. It can also be used for make light war machines, like scorpios and baliistas.

Engineers are needed for both fortifiy settlements and making new ones for refugees (in case space is needed). And in battle they are very useful.

Now for the dothraki themselves, they have never heard or see dragons (especially their horses), so we can use this in battles for move them (like a dog with sheeps) right in formation of spears and stakes of our men while also burning them.

This is just some ideas put there, I am not the best at it. In the battle it self, since we will be on Urrax is probably fine if we keep the half plate. Since we fight on dragon.

Beside wood and engineers, maybe more foragers and healers could be a boon to our forces. The last ones might be a problem for our uncle to give with the current situation.
>>
>>4840861
You may be able to startle the horses with a dragon but a well trained and well bred warhorse will still follow its riders commands. And dothraki are very, very accomplished riders.

Being as they are skirmishers they'll try to avoid any fights against heavily fortified areas. And we'll only be able to out-skirmish them with dragons. Otherwise it'll be a hell of a time outmaneuvering them to bring them into unfavorable engagements.

The best way to deal with skirmishers if you can't outskirmish them is to outrange them. Scorpions would be your best bet there, mobile enough to not slow an army on the march, accurate and fast enough to engage moving targets at distance.

Of course, that's moot. Because as we know they'll just go around and attack villages and shit forcing us to chase them. Then they'll engage when we're tired.

Fighting horse-fuckers has always been the worst fucking thing. It's not even like they won't be able to siege, either. They just avoid it because it's a waste of time. Worse than guerilla warfare I swear.
>>
>>4840861
Tons of foot archers, whether bows or crossbowmen.
>>
>>4840981
They will just dance around the footmen and go pilligae whatever they want instead of facing them. That's the advantage of having literally all their warriors atop a horse.

We could take a playbook from the Chinese,(Eternal barbarian fighters) make traps for the Dothraki, fortification to slow them down, and diplomacy.
>>
>>4841115
Hide caltrops everywhere. Make them think twice whenever they choose to engage.
>>
Have we decided what we are gonna do about the Targs? Either we invite them back into the free hold or they're most likely going to causes problems for the Reynes in Westeros.
>>
>>4841193
We have 102 years until the Conquest and if the Reynes become the reigning house in the Westerlands, they'll probably do something similar to the Starks and just surrender.
>>
You could just genocide or forcefully settle them, just saying - the eastern Grasslands are quite fertile, and you'd secure a direct route to your potential allies in the East (Yi Ti).
>>
>>4841267
This was in reply to the Dothraki issue.

Regarding the Targs..it's really up to you. Either take them out while their dragons are young (within 2 years 4 of their 5 dragons will die), or force them to rejoin the fold. Both are viable options, but if you plan to keep the number of dragons & dragonlords high, I'd suggest diplomacy.
>>
>>4841267
>Dothraki
Either genocide or enslavement are fine with me, but we should make sure they are a none threat as soon as they make trouble. The grasslands should be safe for the settlement of the refugees of the doom.
>>
>>4841115
They are proud warriors though, maybe if we challenge them we can constrict them to battle. Leaving them around is bad.
So we should destroy them.
>>4841193
Personally i had in mind to go and unite their family with our own.

Dragonlords are few and dragonlords are even less. Being together and ruling over an empire is a good offer. Plus westeros can be easily taken as well if we need more land.

I am planning to talk with them on our way back when we need to help Alastor.
>>
>>4841343
I will flat out tell you that, as things stand right now - aka the Soranyen are not yet bound to you by blood - they are the single largest family of Dragonlords left (two adult, 3 children) and currently they have the most dragons (5, of which 4 will die shortly).

In these conditions, you will need to have already laid down the groundwork in order to convince them to submit/unite the families - and even then, you can expect to have to throw them many bones.

Now, if you wait for the vast majority of their dragons to die..then things change, but you'd lose 4 of the few dragons left. You could save them, but again - specific choices, and later on.
>>
>>4841353
Interesting.
Something to consider for the future.
>>
>>4841353
Who are the other Soranyen members? We have Rhaelle, Daeron, and Sheira. That's 3, who are the other 2?

>>
>>4841460

That night you sleep deeply…and dream of home.
The tall spires of Old Valyria, the rivers of lava that ran directly among the buildings, with the incredibly narrow archways connecting the tall towers…your home.

You sleep. So deeply, that you almost do not recognize the moment the dream shifts

You do not need to nod, for your intentions are clear in your heart.

A single white light, and you find yourself standing on a small hill, while a battle rages down in the river valley below. What appears to be men in armor fight in an immense brawl atop a bridge, while you witness a charge of knights cut deep in one of the two sides’ flank.

The flags you spot are unfamiliar to you, but one stands out above the others - two axes atop a white shield.

The men fight with ardor, but this is not what you are here for – to the East you see what appears to be a small army marching toward the unfolding massacre.

There.

A thought, and you are standing atop a small boulder, facing the incoming men.

Men led by a man with a grey shield, who upon seeing you appear out of this air lets out a laughter and rushes forward, comng to a halt in front of you.

> “And who are you, lone Sir?”

He smiles while studying you...he remind you of a wolf.

You begin babbling, attempting to distract him

> “I am good Sir, a good Sir. Hey Sir, have you heard the story about the knight? That one where he..?”

He is looking at you as you were an idiot, and as he relaxes slightly..

> Fighting (Fencing) Test – 21 vs 14

> Damage: {6 [Stiletto (4 + 1) + Off-Hand Left-Hand Knife (1)] * 2 Degrees of Success} – 5 AR (Breastplate)
> Sir Garibald Gray Health: 12 – 7 = 5

Your attack succeeds, and causes the knight to fall to the ground, screaming in pain.

His men have witnessed what happened and are running toward you to save their commander.

In the distance, behind said men, you witness a familiar sight – two dragons breathing fire on a city.

> “Well Sun, seems your foe was recruiting everyone and even their cousins…”

This is not where you die.

And so, a simple slash with your knife is enough to silence the screaming knight, before you show his men how a true son of Valyria faces unsurmountable odds.

You tail it.

They say the best part of valor is to live to fight another day, you know?

“Screw getting murdered by the men whose leader I just killed for you”

You do not stop, for you can hear the men behind you quickly approaching, but you want to scream insults at the one who put you in this situation.

The Sun laughs as you run.

And then, just a knight is about to hack you down…you see him crumble to ashes in front of your eyes

You hear a crumbling noise – turning around for a second, a scene out of your nightmares presents itself to you: two hundred men scream, their bodies splintering along clearly defined lines, almost as if they were made of glass – cracks spreading from a single spot above their hearths.

You stop and turn..and see the figure behind the clouds looking intently at you.

You scream in pain, feeling as if your head is flooded with thoughts not yours

> 1 Token of Mental Fortitude gained (1/7 before you are ejected from this world and gain a real injury)

And then..it stops, just as suddenly as it began. It is the figure itself that now steps back, as if in immense pain

She won’t interfere again, or it will be the last thing she will do. Continue.

The Path takes on a blueish light, and you see two paths in your mind

You stop for a second to think

> “So…where next?”

“The two dragonriders”

> “You can’t be serious.”

“Take them out.”

> Agility (Quickness Test) – 16 vs 10
> Great Success! Two Degrees of Success!

You sprint toward the town – it’s not that far and in this place, thinking of moving seems to have some sort of effect on your capacity to sprint, for within minutes you find yourself in front of the gates. Pushing your way inside is a relatively easy thing to do – you simply push the refugees out of the way. But once inside, you witness the destruction visited upon this city by the dragons.

The tower

You look to the side and notice a tower along the city wall – your destination apparently.

Dashing forward among the burning ruins of a city is no easy task, but given the short distance, you manage to clear the gap in less than 10 minutes.

It’s here that you see a guard coming down the stairs, as if trying to escape.

Too bad he sees you as well – a strange man with white hair and weapons drawn coming at him – and he charges you.

> Rhogar goes first
> Fighting (Fencing) Test – 19 vs 12
> Great Success! Two Degrees of Success!

It is simple to trick a terrified man, for he’s prone to make mistakes…

> Damage: {6 [Stiletto (4 + 1) + Off-Hand Left-Hand Knife (1)] * 2 Degrees of Success} – 2 AR) = 10
> Guardsman Health: 9 – 10 = -1

…as you have just shown – a simple feint with your knife to throw him off balance, and a quick stab of your stiletto in the gap between his breastplate and his neck.

> Agility (Quickness Test) – 21 vs 10
> Incredible Success! Three Degrees of Success!

You run up the stairs that connect to the roof of the tower, vaulting above any obstacle you find, until you reach the top and see…
…a ballista.

You decide to aim the ballista toward the rider of the larger dragon – it takes considerable effort to do so, for it is an unwieldy siege weapon. And yet, you succeed.

Checking the target, it comes to you that this will be a very hard shot – you have never heard of ballistae taking down dragons. Oh of course there had been a lot of discussions, back in Old Valyria, about which weapon could theoretically take down a dragon with its rider; you never heard of what resulted from all of those discussions and debates.

If you had to make an educated guess….mass fire from ballistae could theoretically do the job.

Except you have only one ballista

With a single shot.

> Marksmanship (Siege Weapons?) Test – 8 vs 12 (DC)
> Greater Failure! Two Degrees of Failure!

You…missed.

A dragon, too busy torching a building and just as big as said building…and you missed.

The beast’s rider notices the giant projectile impacting the nearby wall and quickly turns, pushing his dragon to move toward your position.

Time to run.

> Agility Test – 15 vs 20 (DC)
> Greater Failure! Two Degrees of Failure!

You tried to run. You really did.

Except…all the obstacles that seemed so trivial when you were running up the stairs, suddenly look extremely difficult to bypass as you try to leave the tower before the dragonrider and his beast reach the building.

You fail.

The air begins to burn – it hurts to breathe.

> 3/7 Mental Fortitude Tokens – Damage taken x2

What will you do?
a) Attempt to leave the tower by running downstairs (test Agility – will take damage)
b) Jump (nearby window, will test Agility to attempt to avoid too much damage, but will incur damage)
c) All my opponents shall disappear like dew under the midday sun

You can’t take anymore of this.

The dragon is breathing fire on the tower and soon..you will join the dead. It doesn’t matter that your mind screams at you that it’s not real – it feels real , realer than everyday life even.

And so you do the only thing you can, given the situation.

> Rolled 19 out of 100 – Broken Rules 1/?

The rules are broken…but so shall be all of our enemies

You are not in control of your body anymore.

You feel another presence in your mind, partially subsuming you.

Images that you could not describe nor properly understand, were this connection inactive, flow into your mind. You see mountains so high that they seem to pierce the sky itself, and chasms so deep that nothing but the wind and darkness inhabit them. You see a star, and you feel its anger.

You shudder. For if this is what it feels like from the side..you do not dare to imagine how it would feel to have such hatred directed at you.

You…or better, the White Sun, raises your arm, and simply points it at the wall.

The wall explodes outwardly – directly toward the dragon Vermithor.

Vermithor
> Agility Test - 48 vs 69
> Astonishing Failure! Four Degrees of Failure

..a man is no match for a dragon, but a dragon is no match for..whatever this being is.

Debris, stones and jagged pieces of masonry fly toward the dragon, piercing its leathery wings in multiple locations and causing it to fall to the ground, writhing in pain.

A large stone is lifted in the air, as if by a giant hand.

Putting the beast out of its misery is but a mercy at this point.

And yet…the traitor Hugh still lives.

Not for long.

A simple thought is enough for its body to splinter like the men outside the city, falling to pieces on the ground.

The other traitor has not even noticed the fate of its friend – good.

It is when you lift your hand in his direction that you feel an opposite force blocking what you are doing.

It seems someone has decided to join her minions in oblivion

How do you wish to deal with this interloper?
NOTE – depending on your choices, it might have an impact on Rhogar’s journey or on his dealing with the Sun in the future.

a) She will join her spouse in death, for this is the fate that awaits all traitors
b) She will regret ever attempting to twist the rules in her favor. Too much damage has happened because of her actions

Option a is a cruel death, option b is interrogation. Note that you can actually reason with the Sun to influence his actions.

Too much suffering. Too much death. Too much destruction. And for what? A mere mortal

It..”She”, laughs. It’s a crystalline sound that fills your mind - it’s not an happy laugh, but one of disdain.

And yet here we are. And what about your new toy?

It feels as if acid has been poured in your mind. It hurts like hells.

> 4/7 Mental Fortitude Tokens – Damage

..it thankfully lasts but a second, before you feel the being scream in pain, and “see” through your body’s eyes that the giant figure is bent in two, close to snapping in twain.

Everything you have done shall be erased. Everyone that has ever known of you shall forget. It shall be as if your very existence had never happened. I shall make sure of it.

You…do not know what is going on, but feel there has to be more to this than mere revenge, especially with what the Sun has just said.

And so you speak – a mortal interrupting two beings greater than him by orders of magnitude.

> Persuasion (Charm) Test – 20 vs ?? (DC)
> ??? Failure! ??? Degrees of Failure!

> “She will not escape from the light of the Sun...but perhaps, she might have some answers that explain her actions. It might be useful to interrogate her, to help prevent future occurrences"

You feel the entire attention of the White Sun upon you. It is pleased with your suggestion, for it makes a lot of sense from the point of view of a mortal. And yet, you feel as if you did not pass its judgement.

I do not need to interrogate her Son of Ashes, for I already know her better than she knows herself

What…who gives you the right! I..

You will never know what she was about to say, for with a single snap of the White Sun’s fingers, the giant figure collapses upon itself, falling into an all-consuming black point who then proceeds to devour itself, expiring into nothingness.

You have much to learn, Son of Ashes. You will, in time. For now return to your life. As for the others..

A bright light covers the entire area, and for a second all you can hear is the final, collective scream of the inhabitants of a failed iteration in the endless ocean of possibilities.

You awake with a start, feeling a phantom pain in your body…and then it’s gone.

You did well, Son of Ashes – less than you could, but more than I expected. Name your reward.

> This is a write-in. The Sun can potentially grant you anything you wish for, but it will always pursue a principle of “equity” in its dealings with you. Truth for Truth, Lies for Lies, Equivalent payment for Equivalent service.

Name your reward – if it’s too little I will throw in something, if it’s too much I’ll turn it down and propose something more rational.

E.g. – you could potentially ask it to undo the Doom itself, were you able to pay the price. Except you can’t and very likely never will be able to.

>>
>>4842529
What's the highest reward we could ask for?
>>
Valyrian Steel sword or magic would be nice
>>
>>4842527
>>4842539
>>4842544
Why settle for valyrian steel when you could ask for supermagic somethingelse metal soo-ord?
>>
>>4842536
That would be equivalent to a Destiny Point (50XP), and skipping the need for a teacher.

The benefit would allow you to pick an Art (aka the "school of magic") and a technique (a spell or a ritual). For example - the Art of Malediction contains many techniques, among which there is Castigation (the one Rhaella used against you to stop you), the Art of Blood Magic contains the technique of Cruentus (Healing).

>>4842543
A Benefit, symbolizing a Destiny Point and its requisites (if reasonable) would be a good reward. But you can ask for something more..or less. You can negotiate for more if you are willing to pay the price.

>>4842539
>>4842527
That would be acceptable as reward, and I I'd tat least make it equivalent to Valyrian Steel (Extraordinary) in quality.

I'm asking for a low key reward because we dont know anything lol. No idea what "currency" our payment will be, when, how, etc. To much missing information to be asking for something big.

I'll be conservative right now and see what the payment for a magick sword is we can have a better idea of what bigger costs are like. Because I'm sure we will have other opportunities to get stuff from the sun.
>>
>>4842583
Now this would be a different request alltogether, for you are asking a metaphysical light instead of a physical weaponized light. An interesting choice (that I did not expect honestly), which would lead you to potentially much higher rewards, risks and..in general a closer relation with White Sun.

You'd be essentially asking him to teach you "more".

A smart move..I can offer you much, Son of Ashes. A way to thwart fate itselt, a mighty weapon, or even..to guide you along the Path, if that’s your wish. I have power both in material, and the immaterial – it wouldn’t be hard for me to bend fate itself if that’s what you wish for

If we don't come out if this dream crazy, surely we will have another mission like this, and perhaps then is where we can ask for the initiation of a Path

I will let it run for 5 minutes, but I think it's settled on Destiny Point.

Do you wish to keep it, or to invest it and get a benefit?

You think for a moment..but the choice is obvious.

> “I wish to have the capacity to thwart fate itself, at least once..”

The White Sun laughs – you swear you can envision a star laughing

So be it, Son of Ashes! A wise choice. Continue being this useful, and we might speak again of other rewards..

..you don’t really feel different. Except…for a quiet surety in your being – a certainty that push comes to shove, you would never be caught again with your shoulders to the wall, for you gained something priceless today – the direct aid of something greater than you, or your enemies, in protecting yourself and the ones you love from harm.

> You gained a Destiny Point

I call the session to a conclusion. Today was a different session. If the reception is good, I will offer you similar missions from time to time as "side quests".

If there are enough people wishing to, nothing stops you from attempting to advance on the Path - it's a..different kind of sorcery like I said. With both direct and indirect applications in-game.

So..I will hang around for 10 minutes to answer to any opinion, critique, question etc as usual.

Cool, thanks for the run QM. And it was certainly interesting, pretty divergent from normal ASOIF quests. Not that that's a bad thing, a good break from the monotony.

Does the Sun like lobster?
>>

I really like this session, and I'm looking forward for more side quests like this
>>
For those interested, we fought in the First Battle of Tumbleton, in the Dance of the dragons era.

>>4842832
It won't become the focus of the quest, but I wanted to do something different. Next session will feature meeting Sheira and finally reaching Elyria.

>>4842833
Yes

>>4842834
Nice. Though I'd advice attempting to move forward along the Path, for I make a direct connection between that value and the kind of rewards that you are offered (and the type of services you might be called upon for)
>>
I love me an eldritch abomination we can comprehend but not really understand because it's too alien
>>

>It won't become the focus of the quest, but I wanted to do something different. Next session will feature meeting Sheira and finally reaching Elyria.
Perfect. I wouldnt want this to become the entire quest but I enjoyed the interlude, definitely a nice change now and then.
You write a good eldritch being.

Looking forward to meeting Sheira

I have a few questions in regards to rewards but if they feel too many your free to skip some
But how much (1/10) would it be to ask for
>A magic anvil that turns to steel hammered on it into Valyrian steel
>To enchant our blades to always return to our side when summoned
>Magic wings to enable human flight to those wearing them
>Armor for our dragon
>To cure our cousin from his crippled state
>Human Valyrian steel armor
>>
Damn, wish we could've asked the sun for mummy back.

You will have to ask and see what is the price required. But in general, magic items in ASOIAF are what you'd consider relics in other systems - what could be considered a minor magic item in let's say D&D, would be considered something out of this world in ASOIAF.

The White Sun is the only "High Fantasy" element in the quest and for a VERY good reason. To unlock it, the players had to follow an extremely specific set of conditions:
a) The players had to be in an exact location (Smoking Sea - a clustefuck of magic and physical damage caused by the Doom of Valyria)
b) They had to choose the right option ("Make new friends - ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!")
c) At the right time - immediately after the connection created between multiple minds was cut, so as to allow its tethers to "reach" something else
d) They rolled on a table (the "Supernatural" table) and had 1/50 chances of getting this result (93 & 94 - The Sun takes notice). The rest of the table did no contain explicit contact with beings, but more indirect ones.

Now...viable rewards - armor for your dragon (non-magical), a "magical" cure for Horonno being crippled and to bend the strings of fate so that, if you choose to search for it, you might have a shot at finding Valyrian Steel Armor.

An Essarian Belaerys light infantryman, at least how i imagine it.

"For Essaria ! For dragon lord Rhogar Belaerys !"
>>
A Volentene Belaerys heavy infantryman.

"For Volantis ! For the Belaerys Dragonlord !"

An attempt at making a new flag for the empire.

The infantrymen are a mix of roman/greek, plus fantastical decorations. Hope you all like it.

>Valyrian Steel Armor.
That be sure cool.
>>
>>4843695
You can undertake a long-term side-quest to obtain it - I already gave you the basic elements (Horonno knows the principles of forging Valyrian Steel, Aurion is an accomplished Blood Sorcerer, you have a Dragon). If there is a general will, I can call for a vote and lock that in as your secondary quest for the moment.
>>
>>4843693
Thanks, i am planning to make more in the future. If you have anything in mind mention it in the quest with a description and i could attempt to make those.
>>
I'm preparing for the next session, then we can start
>>
>>4843704
Eh.. that's more of a long-term thing to consider. We probably won't even need it that much from the back of a dragon. I'll wait to see the other options for side-quests before deciding.
>>
>>4843796
>We probably won't even need it that much from the back of a dragon.
Perhaps. But you never know. And it's better to be protected just in case. The same reason why you sanitize even though you wore a hazmat suit. All it takes is one (un)lucky shot.

Besides then we can hand it down you our kids and it would be totally cool.
