Last time out, the tomato reunion came to fruition, you learned about Gautier’s troubled past and discovered that Oliver is in jail yet again. It doesn’t seem like the ex-terrorist is in bigger trouble than the usual bureaucracy so you’ll wait until morning to lawfully get him out of his predicament. You’re staying inside the camper with Matilda and Wilma, all sleeping on the same mattress because of Wilma's wishes.

Your eyelids open slightly to let the sunlight enter, it’s a new day here in the past time, you never asked what date it is, so you have no idea what day it is. You guessed the year, and not much else, it feels like it’s winter or autumn. It’s just a nice cozy morning, but looking at a calendar wouldn’t be the worst thing ever.

You realize you’re in a peculiar position, you somehow ended up in the middle of this cuddling mess, both girls resting on you like you’re a body pillow. Wilma is resting on the left side of your chest, and Matilda resting her head between your shoulder and the pillow under. You’re immobilized by these two – good thing you don’t want to go to the bathroom… yet.

The plan is to take Oliver out of jail as soon as possible, so you’ll start with that…

What do you do?

>Sneak out of this situation and make breakfast for everyone.
>Wake Matilda up to talk for a bit. You need to wake one of them up for an escape route.
>Wake Wilma up to talk for a bit. You need to wake one of them up for an escape route.

Votes:

Votes are counted until 25 minutes have passed. This rule doesn't apply to the last reply of the day.
Votes that require a dice roll are counted until 15 minutes have passed, so we can speed up the process. Rolls are counted until 10 minutes have passed, so be prepared!

(NEW) Dice Mechanic:

We always roll 1d100s!
Since most people weren’t happy with the system of averaging top four rolls, we’re using best of 2/3/4 depending on the attribute a prompt requires. If Johnny is a genius and it’s a Knowledge based roll, he gets more rolls (Max. 7)! If he sucks, he gets less dice (Min. 2)!

When asked for rolls, I will specify how many you’re going to get. Rolling begins after it’s asked.

Rolling 100 is a critical and ignores all other rolls! In the same vein, rolling 1 means a critical failure (only for Very Hard rolls and above).

The difficulty of the roll is tied with the effectiveness of the action. In other words, the harder the option the better the result!

Don’t forget that at the end of the day, this is a story-driven quest! What the prompts are describing is more important than the difficulty of the rolls, for results in a fight.

Again, rolls are only counted when they are posted within ten minutes of being asked, so watch out!

These two look so comfortable sleeping… As the man once known as King Comfy, you don’t want to disturb them from such pleasures, but as a great leader you have to make difficult decisions every now and then to watch over the future of your people – you must relinquish your position as a pillow, and sneak out of this predicament to make breakfast. Before getting into action, you stare at the girls’ faces one last time resting on you, Matilda looks relaxed in a way you’ve never seen before, and Wilma looks like she’s finally getting some good rest after a long time.

You feel like a monster for doing this, but you managed to escape the bed without disturbing them… Time to make breakfast with your absurdly long hoodie still on. You must do it quietly.

As you take some stuff out of the fridge, you realize someone leaning on the closest window you are in front of with a sign on it that reads: “Get out, we need to talk.” That person being (probably) Esperanza. You thought she never wanted to see you again, but she’s outside, yet the problem is…

Should you even bother?

What do you do?

This isn’t going to be fun, but if you ignore her, perhaps she’s going to be more of a bother later on, and you already have enough on your plate to deal with. Philonune advises you to be careful once again before moving on. You leave the stuff on the tiny kitchen counter, and quietly go outside…

“Oh rats, he actually came out…” Esperanza (?) looks away, disgusted. “Not even the dumb faces dissuade him.”

“Is that the same reason you refused to knock on the door?” Her entity is not happy with their host’s efforts.

“Hey there. How can I help you?” You softly speak to not wake up anyone.

“First, could you wear this?” Esperanza (?) hands you a paper bag.

“It’s fine, I have my own.” You take out your paper bag from your pocket and put it on your face. You stole it back from Chio during dinner yesterday.

“You’re an accommodating guy, huh?” Esperanza is finally looking at your general direction without issues. “All of the sudden, I kinda feel bad.”

“Then apologize.” Her entity doesn’t like her wishy-washy attitude.

“But it ain’t my fault! You’re the one who wanted to check on him.” Esperanza (?) refuses to be nice as she hides behind the floating cloak. If her entity had eyes, he would be rolling them.

“Too late to be worrying about my self-esteem. What do you guys need?” You wonder.

“Apologies, she’s not used to dealing with other human beings, and I’m not used to your customs either.” Her entity tries to be as cordial as possible. “I implore you to keep this conversation going with her this time. She’ll be the one asking the questions. She needs exercise.”

“If you say so.” You shrug. She says you’re accommodating, might as well keep the charade. “What’s up?”

“You’re the only one in this entire realm with an entity.” Esperanza (?) reveals in shocking fashion. She never found San Wich then, huh?

“Oh.” You don’t know what to say.

“Huh? Maybe you’re one of those people who call them differently… You’re the only one with an enigma!”

“Mhm.” You nod.

“An otherworldly being, a demon, a ghost person, a deity, a spectre, a fiend, a daemon, a boogie oogie! We’d need to agree on one name. You get me, don’t you?” Esperanza asks again.

“I got it the first time…” You scratch the back of your paper bag. Who calls them a boogie oogie…?

“Oh.” Esperanza (?) is a klutz. “We came here to listen to your story, oddity. You’re an anomaly within an anomaly. We’ll decide if you’re dangerous or not.”

“We’re not going to judge you or hurt you.” Her entity clarifies.

“What if I ask some questions first and then I’ll gladly respond to your queries?” You need to get some information out of her before she randomly decides to puff out of existence again.

“Should I?” Esperanza (?) turns to her entity, who doesn’t want to give her an actual response. “It’s a deal then.” She gets courage out of nowhere to give you the response you’re wishing for.

“First things first. You want breakfast? I think I can make a mean omelet. Or do you prefer your eggs sunny side up?” You need to cook for everyone!

“Eggs…?” Esperanza (?) is dumbfounded by your simple question.

“Second question, tea or cocoa? Third one, want some bacon?” You wiggle your eyebrows.

“I’m good, thanks.” Esperanza (?) rejects your offer incredibly politely. By her standards, anyway.

“Don’t be shy, it’s not going to take me long.” You insist.

“I don’t want to go inside your trailer. I don’t like closed spaces.” The girl bluntly replies.

“That’s fair. Offer still stands if you wanna grab a bite.” You give her a solid thumbs up.

“It’s your turn to answer my questions. What’s your name…?” Esperanza starts from the top.

Do we really want to keep our identity secret? I'm fine with that, but Esperanza is clearly our Mom's friend who's been in a coma. Presumably our mom was involved in getting her a judge-entity too, on the premise of her being healed from whatever put her into a coma.

“My name is Phil Noon. And you?” You ask back.

“I’m Esperanza. I can’t reveal my last name because I don’t want people to find me.” The mysterious Esperanza announces. Your hunch was right!

“I understand.” You nod. You said your full name, but if you point that out and get picky, you’ll just upset her. “But that gives me the chance to ask another question right away, doesn’t it?”

“A-Are you in some sort of hurry?” Esperanza is surprised by your train of logic .

“I need to make breakfast soon.” You shrug. “I’m joking, I’m not. But I do need to cook.”

“Haha, you’re kinda funny.” Esperanza enjoys your presence now. That took a lot of work…

“What exactly is this place? Why do you call it a realm? What’s going on?” That’s three questions in a row, but she should be used to it after the breakfast question.

“…” Esperanza takes a pause to digest the extra information your questions carry. “How can I explain...?” Esperanza looks troubled.

“Just say whatever comes to your mind, I’ll ask if I don’t understand something.” You think it’s better if she spills it out instead of overthinking it.

“Even knowing where to start is hard.” Esperanza clutches her head. Her pose relaxes after sighing. “You’re used to calling them Entities? Or Enigmas? Or Deities?”

“I prefer Entities.” You don’t have a preference, but you don’t want to get confused.

“Understood…” Esperanza doesn’t like it. “We’re in an Entity-like world. We call these different worlds “realms” because they’re unidentified. And we don’t know what’s going on, we became aware of this anomaly because it is borrowing and/or drawing energy the same way we do during our gatherings, and we followed its trail. The magnitude it’s doing it is on a scale we’ve never seen before. We’re still investigating, trying to understand it. We might not know the cause, but I’m confident we’ll be able to replicate it.”

“That’s not the point of our mission here.” The entity almost tells Esperanza to focus.

“You’ll have to elaborate a little…” You feel like you’re in trouble.

“What do you want me to explain? I’m keeping my word, I hope you do the same.” Esperanza expected that now it was supposed to be your turn to answer questions. Good thing you mentioned that you wanted clarifications if needed.

How do you respond?

“What’s an Entity-like world?” You think that’s the more worrying point that has been left too vague.

“It’s something Smithele hypothesizes.” Esperanza points at her entity. Did she have a stroke...? “He says it feels similar to the world the entities come from. I’ve never been there, and neither has he.”

“Let me expand on that briefly...” Esperanza’s entity feels the need to interject. “For a while, I was visible to some of the supposed props in here. From my own understanding, that is only possible in a realm where entities primarily exist.”

“You said it like there is more than one.” You’re really getting worried now.

“There are 3 dimensions, human. The world Esperanza is from, the world entities originate from and the Creator’s realm. The last two share the same properties. An irrelevant, but fun fact. Hooray for knowledge.” Smithele doesn’t sound excited… or alive.

“And so does this world?” You wish they could expand on that.

“That’s all I have to say, please proceed in your conversation with Esperanza. She’ll answer your question.” Smiblabla goes back to being quiet.

“Y-Yeah, but the longer we’ve been here, the more people’s ability to discern Cloak Man here has gone away.” Esperanza explains.

“Wait, people saw him…?” You don’t remember Chio catching a glimpse of him.

“We said he’s in a costume, we earned some coin with it. People thought we were doing a show.” Esperanza dismisses it like it’s no big deal as she proudly shows some cents.

“Couldn’t you just hide it in flame form or something?” That makes them invisible, right? You don’t think anyone but Matilda commented about Philonune’s presence at any point. You point at your partner to drive the point.

“What are you talking about…?” Esperanza doesn’t get it all.

“Like him. He’s in flame form. C’mon, buddy. Dance for the lady.” You ask Philonune to put on a show. He doesn’t have legs, how is he supposed to dance? He’s floating energetically at least.

“Your entity is pathetically small, is that what you want to show me?” Esperanza is really clueless. Philonune looks offended, he’s definitely taller than you three combined...

“Ehm, forget it.” You shrug. “Would you be okay with breakfast if I brought it out?”

“Just answer my questions and I’ll let you go to do your thing. I’ll come visit again if you’re still here later.” Esperanza really doesn’t want to eat your food, maybe she thinks it’s as disgusting as your face. “What’s your entity’s name and what’s his ability?”

Uh-oh…

UH-OH.

Fun facts: We'd better not piss Esperanza off, she's the one that coma'd someone for complaining at the last judge meeting.

To be fair, the person who got coma'd was threatening to reveal the war after the rules to don't do that had just been announced.

“His name is Andonune and he turns invisible. It’s pretty dope.” You expertly escape from this alarming situation with ease. Your genius almost frightens you.

“yUP.” Philonune seems confused but agrees with what you said.

“Look.” You turn your hand invisible right in front of Esperanza to prove it, in a way that only she can see it. “Eh? What do you say?”

“Woah, you could’ve turned your face invisible instead of using the paper bag!” Esperanza liked your trick so much she decided to use it to burn you.

“That’s not funny.” You can only take so much before defending yourself… Wait, isn’t this like how Scarlet behaves…? How dangewous. Anyway, it would be way too creepy to do that… Strange thing to say in front of a floating Cloak Man, but oh well.

“Why not?” Esperanza is legitimately confused as she nervously chuckles. “Doesn’t matter, you’re not the cause of this.”

“You thought I was responsible for this?” You realize Esperanza is not trusting you that much.

“Didn’t I tell you that you’re the only one with an enigma?” Esperanza isn’t impressed. “Not that I care, it’s too bad I won’t learn something new about this realm from you. But I never expected to.”

“By the way, how did you find me?” You think that Esperanza used her Judge abilities!

“This camper wasn’t here before.” Esperanza points at it. Wait, that’s it?

“Oh. But why did you assume I was in it?” You didn’t think Esperanza would go that way.

“I didn’t, I just peeked inside and saw you. Like I said, I didn’t see it before when I explored town, so it piqued my interest.” Esperanza makes it sound obvious.

“But the curtains were closed.” You recall closing them…

“Then how did you see my message?” Esperanza blinks quickly.

“I guess there is no point in arguing.” It’s her word against yours.

“I agree.” Esperanza meekly nods. “In fact, I’ll be leaving. I need to continue my research.”

“You sure you don’t want to grab a bite?” You insist for the last time.

“I’m sure.” Esperanza isn’t really interested.

“What about next time?” You want to arrange something in case you’re still trapped.

“I said I’ll visit you again, didn’t I? Do what you want.” Esperanza just doesn’t care about the food. “I need to keep an eye on you. In this realm, you’re under my jurisdiction, Player.”

Unlike last time, Smithele grabs Esperanza by the arms, and they slowly fly away to the distance… That looked stupid. Why didn’t she just disappear?

“Who were they? Were they Judges?” Matilda opens the door to the Camper and asks you out of nowhere.

“Yeah, wait, you saw them both?” You know Matilda was able to see flames, but this is new.

“Indeed. I can even listen to your flame now.” Matilda looks incredibly pleased. You don’t understand why, but you find this odd...

“Well…” You explain who those two are and connect them with what you talked with Matilda earlier.

“Did you ask her how to get out?” Matilda wonders.

“Uhm, no? I don’t think she would’ve told us.” Better to keep your hands close to your chest, if you reveal too much, you might dig yourself into a hole.

“You don’t trust her or are you still feeling her out?” Matilda raises an eyebrow.

“Hard to say either way.” If you never knew a single thing about her before this meeting, it probably means something. You don’t know what. But something. “I’m hungry, I’ll make breakfast.”

With no one’s help (Matilda wanted to cook herself (you didn’t let her, you’ll do it!) and Wilma was sleeping), you made the egg dishes you were eager to create! With everyone seated around the tiny table that hosted some of the food from yesterday’s dinner, it’s time to eat!

“…Phil, can I ask you something?” Wilma politely wants something answered.

“What’s wrong?” You’re concerned.

“Why are you wearing a paper bag…?” Wilma is puzzled by this.

“O-Oh shoot. I forgot. Don’t mind me!” You take it off and place it inside your pocket. That’s embarrassing. Wait, why didn’t Matilda mention it?! She let you cook like this! “Hey Sugar, why didn’t you say something?”

“I thought you looked amusing.” Matilda was entertained.

“Then why don’t you smile if you find it so funny?” You raise an eyebrow in obvious skepticism.

“True joy is felt in the soul.” Matilda touches her heart, mocking you. You glare back.

“…You look much better this way, Phil.” Wilma is a good girl who cares about raising your morale, you appreciate it.

“Aw, thanks.” You pat the good girl’s head. “I wish I had the ability to always look good like you two.”

Wilma turns tomato with your comment, Matilda just shakes her head like saying ‘unbelievable.’ You don’t feel like you did anything wrong. Worth mentioning that you’re all wearing casual clothes, Wilma is using some of the spare clothes Matilda had in here. They look comfortable.

You three had a pleasant meal together, it was delicious. As planned, you make your intentions known to go save Oliver from his predicament, sadly, you’ll have to do it on your own. Matilda raised some good points about not wanting to take Wilma outside because of the obvious dangers, and that she rather not leave Wilma on her own. Which meant you or Matilda had to go fetch him, and you decided well before that you’ll do it, so another solo-op. Nothing dissimilar to what you’re used to.

Because you’re worried about the fuel (and totally not the fact that Matilda doesn’t have a freaking license), you decided it’s better to walk to the station. You part ways with the girls and get there without getting lost somehow…

“…I want her face plastered all over town. I need my girl back as soon as possible.” A middle-aged woman is complaining to Officer Kobashi who’s at the front of the station.

“Like I said, madam. You need to wait 24-hours before reporting a person missing.” Kobashi plays dumb.

“Don’t try to pass your indolence as the law, I know my rights. Now do your job.” The woman won’t back down. Now that you give her a good look, she’s the woman in Wilma’s bubble… Her caretaker.

In the corner of your eyes, you see Yareli at her desk working the papers, pretty much ignoring what’s going on.

What do you do?

>Approach Yareli and ignore the situation for now. Recover Oliver, then ask questions.

You have decided to take a risky action and that one is doing nothing but observe. You’ll have to act casual and sit on a chair or something and pretend you’re waiting for your turn. Their discussion continues…

“Look. I called the school and they assured me Wilma attended yesterday, so—”

“I’m her mother, I’m her caretaker, she hasn’t come back home since yesterday. I’m telling you to start searching, her life is in danger as we speak.” The woman interrupts Kobashi once again. If your memory serves you right, her name is Ophelia.

“Ma’am, you don’t have the proper documentation for us to start our hunt anyway. You didn’t show me your certificate as her caretaker, or a picture for us to identify her, or anything. Just because I personally know Wilma doesn’t mean we can skip the rules.” Kobashi is playing the clueless working man perfectly. Perhaps, too perfectly…

“The law establishes none of those requirements are necessary upon imminent danger, which she is in.” The evil caretaker is starting to sound irritated.

“You know this bit of the law quite well, Ms. Bruun. Do you lose children often?” Officer Kobashi tries to ease up the tense atmosphere with an insensitive joke that would make Chio proud.

“Are you accusing me of something again, Kobashi?” The supposedly-demented woman starts chuckling. She wipes off Kobashi’s smile just like that. “My lovely daughter Wilma Bruun is missing… Why don’t you do an actual heroic deed for once and find her?” Ophelia takes something out of her pocket and puts it on the table. “The picture you wanted, now move.”

“…” Kobashi picks it up and gives it a good look.

“I’m not leaving until you print out some pamphlets with the smile I swore to protect on them. I’ll do anything to get my little pumpkin back. I’ll help spread them around!” Ophelia’s smile gets more twisted. Wilma’s no pumpkin, she’s a tomato! Tomato!

“What’s all this ruckus?” Another officer shows up, his nose is huge… What the hell?

“Ngh…” Kobashi doesn’t seem pleased with that guy’s presence.

“Oh my, officer Patel! You finally show up! I thought your shift started earlier.” Ophelia seems to be happy to talk to this officer. “I wouldn’t have come out during these hours if I knew you weren’t here.”

“Oh, yeah, huh, yeah, mine starts around this time, yeah. And please, I told you to call me Liam, Ms. Ophelia.” The big nose guy is lying…

Those two seem to have some chemistry. This gives you no good vibes, none! Zero!

You decide to continue watching, after all, you’re just waiting your turn like a good citizen would.

“What seems to be the problem, Ms. Ophelia?” Officer Big Nose asks the archaic beast.

“This man refuses to lend me a helping hand at my lowest point. My daughter went missing and he’s refusing to come to my aid, citing some kind of bureaucratic nonsense as the reasons to turn me down.” Surprisingly, Ophelia doesn’t play this up as much as you thought she would, she sounds rather convincing just by sounding calm. Maybe you’re watching too many of Nariko’s dramas and your mind is getting warped… “This is my little devil.” Ophelia takes the picture from Kobashi’s hands and shows it to Liam.

“Kobashi, how could you…?” Officer Big Nose is appalled as he takes the picture. “Honestly, this is classic Kobashi, he always finds ways to turn down work to chase schoolgirls around. Ironic, first time he has an excuse to do what he loves and he looks the other way… I guess he’s more lazy than passionate.”

“I implore you to watch what you’re saying, you’re talking about my daughter, Officer.” Even Ophelia found that comment tasteless. Kobashi wisely decides to stay quiet so his coworker can dig himself further. You don’t know how to feel anymore.

“Oh crap, well, whoops…?” Liam chuckles uncomfortably as he takes a sip of his coffee. If you ever think you’re awkward, just try to remember this moment. “Point is, we need to get moving and find this delicious piece of pumpkin before someone else gets a taste of her, am I right?”

“Are you under the influence? What are you saying…?” Ophelia doesn’t know how to react. Woah, this is going places!

“C’mon, Ms. Ophelia, You’re not that naïve, aren’t you?” Officer Big Nose chuckles then realizes Ophelia isn’t getting it. “Do you actually think she’s in real danger? If so, relax. Look, I’m gonna be a lil’ honest with you. This is a peaceful town in the middle of nowhere, everyone here knows nothing bad ever happens. Nobody here is going to kidnap your little devil, and a little devil she is if you get what I’m sayin’. Where do you think she went? She went to have some fun with one of her classmates.” Big Nose pervert wiggles his eyebrows in a way that makes you uncomfortable. “Don’t forget she’s a CotF, ma’am! There is a reason they keep multiplying like bunnies and weighing us down! They aren’t like us, these leeches think they are entitled to do whatever they want, they don’t think, they act, consequences be damned. That’s how they are. I know you tried to educate her, Ms. Ophelia, but it is what it is.”

“Hmph, I’m still concerned, she belongs to me.” Ophelia isn’t interested in that Big Nose Bastard’s opinion.

“I just wanted you to relax, Ms. Ophelia, and it seems to have worked. Your little devil will be fine, by the evening she’ll be back home, and you’ll have the talk together. I just need some copies of these.” The asshole waves the photo in front of him.

Kobashi snaps the photo out of the other officer’s hands, takes out a match and lights it on fire. Then he pulls a cigarette out of his pocket, and uses the flaming picture to start smoking.

“W-What do you think you are doing?!” Big Nose shouts angrily.

“I needed one after listening to your drivel for so long.” Kobashi stares daggers at the scum.

“You! How dare you?” Ophelia is about to lose it.

“Aren’t you the mother of the century? I’m sure you have another pic and not only the one from her file.” Kobashi says without any remorse as his hand almost catches on fire because the picture burnt quicker than he thought. He managed to keep his cool somehow…

“I’m going to talk with your superior at this instant.” Ophelia wants to walk away but doesn’t know where to go.

“What about your daughter?” Kobashi smirks.

“Gah!” Ophelia wants to strangle Kobashi.

“F-Follow me to the lieutenant’s office!” Big Nose persuades Ophelia to go with him, but she’s just standing there, glaring at Kobashi.

“Could you keep it down?” A tired looking Yareli shouts from her desk…

Oh yeah, you were here for another reason.

I'll generally support the notion of talking to Yareli to bust Oliver out but also checking in with Kobashi.

I don't particularly care about info on Patel though, but I think our invisibility+Kobashi's knowledge can make some things happen with regards to Wilma and the Orphanage of the Blue. I'd be quite happy to bring him into our 'help Wilma' group, though we may need to keep him from actually seeing her so he has plausible deniability. We should keep in mind that the officer that breaks the Bruun Scandal catches flak from Gordon Sr. himself though.

You take Yareli’s intervention as some sort of cue to approach her, she notices you halfway with some sort of excitement… at least you think so, she’s as expressionless as ever.

“Hello there, Mr. Noon. Have you come here to retrieve your friend back?” Officer Yareli doesn’t waste a second and gets straight to the point.

“I am.” You nod. “Were his administrative issues solved?” You hope you didn’t come here for nothing.

“Yes. Would your absurdly long hoodie play a part if that wasn’t the case?” Yareli raises an eyebrow. “You weren’t planning on smuggling him out, were you?”

“No, of course not… But now that you mention it…” You’re getting ideas for later.

“Don’t infringe the law in front of me.” Officer Yareli didn’t like that. You wonder if it’s really important to add the “in front of me” bit…

“I’m just joking.” You think it’s her fault for giving you the idea. “Did you deliver him my message?”

“Yes, I did. He’s waiting inside the cell for you.” Yareli confirms that everything is going swiftly.

“Nice! Why is he in there?” You think Oliver should be waiting outside of it at the very least.

“I mentioned to him that only prisoners get breakfast, and he’s legally still under our custody until he puts a foot out. Which reminds me, I need to give him his meal.” Officer Yareli stands up. “I’ll get the keys as well, I’ll be back in a moment.”

“Before I forget to ask, did you find your bike?” You stop Yareli before she goes.

“Sadly, I have not.” Yareli tilts her head down a smidge, that’s the closest thing to an emotion you’ve seen from her. “If you’ll excuse me.” She walks away.

With nothing better to do, you turn your head around to the event that was happening earlier. Both Ophelia and Officer Big Nose leave the station together, it seems there is no time to talk to any lieutenant just yet. You approach Kobashi to say hi and ask some questions.

“I didn’t realize you were here!” Kobashi looks happy to see you, despite being the man who stole his bike. “By the way, I think we found your friend, he’s in jail.” He gives you an uncomfortable smile.

“Yeah, I know, I’m here for him.” You nod. The officer relaxes quite a bit.

“Sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, but I got my hands full.” Kobashi apologizes.

“I saw it.” You appreciate the thought.

“Well, it’s easy to pretend not to care when you know the girl is safe with you, right?” Kobashi seems to know you’re protecting Wilma! Maybe he’s really some kind of competent detective. “I got a call from her teacher Chio, and she told me about what you’re doing. You almost put me in big trouble, but I maneuvered around that. You’re really a proactive guy, thank you. We need to keep her and the other children safe from those people.”

“I should be apologizing for the bike thing instead…” You scratch the back of your head.

“Didn’t take a genius to find it. Yareli’s bike on the other hand, now that’s a pickle.” Kobashi loses focus.

“So who is that other officer, and why does he know Ophelia so well to not get his huge nose pushed in?” You ask about Officer Liam.

“Unlike Yareli and I, he has been part of this station for a while. From what I’ve seen, he’s always hogging the glory around here, so he’s well liked in the community. If only they knew that Liam only wants to leave this place…” Kobashi doesn’t get the appeal either. “D-Don’t tell anyone I said these things.” Kobashi just realized he’s been a little too trusting.

“I won’t.” You adjust your glasses.

“What are you planning to do now? You know there is something really fishy in that orphanage, right?” You say it bluntly. There is no reason to pretend there isn’t an issue anymore.

“Keep going as I always have, maybe with a little more determination.” Kobashi opens one of the drawers in his desk and pulls out an archive.

“You’ve been investigating?” You’re surprised, he seemed clueless yesterday morning about this whole issue!

“C’mon, let’s go outside for a sec.” Kobashi stands up and walks outside the office. “Don’t worry, if Yareli doesn’t see us, she’ll know. She’s a smart cat.”

“Okay…” You trail behind the officer…

You’re outside, Kobashi bought you a drink from the vending machine. It’s an iced tea called “Tea Tears”, you’ve never heard of it before, probably went bankrupt before you were born. Tastes pretty good…

“Now we can talk.” Kobashi takes a sip of his own Tea Tears…

“What are the files you were holding about? The orphanage?” You just want to know if you’re on the same wavelength.

“On the owner, Ophelia Bruun. That’s the woman you just saw. You don’t turn happy kids into miserable souls without me raising an eyebrow.” Kobashi deflates as he continues. “I haven’t uncovered anything of note, she and her husband are clean as a whistle, ex-government officials and all. The department doesn’t have my back on this issue no matter how much I push it.”

“Tell me what you need to take that place down.” You’ll get what he needs.

“I’ll be frank, Phil. You don’t get the fat cats’ attention with CotF abuse, it’s as widespread as cotton candy and nobody gives a damn. I’m sure you’re well aware of that. We need something bigger.” Kobashi doesn’t like what he’s saying but he’s saying it anyway. “I need to get my hands on their documentation. I need to know if there are some shady deals going on, or something extravagant that catches the press’ attention, like the orphanage that was training their kids to become boxers. Anything that merits an investigation will do as well.”

“I get it.” You think being a secret cult will do the trick. Or maybe the child trafficking part is enough… The fact that you have options is pretty disturbing. “Any evidence of anything weird will do, basically.” Maybe you can sneak inside the orphanage, or just take photo evidence of the Orphanage’s misgivings…

“I just want this in the back of your mind: You don’t have to do anything. I know you feel pressured with hiding Wilma, but believe in me. I swear I’ll crack the case.” Kobashi is confident in his abilities. “Keep this a secret, Phil. Everything. Not one word to anyone, not even other police officers. Except Yareli, you can trust her, she’s in the know about the whole situation as well – and she’s an angel! Haha!”

“Is she helping you out?” You ask.

“Yeah.” Kobashi smiles. “We’ve been coworkers for far longer than anyone else, just lucky we’ve been moved to the same stations when we get shuffled.”

“Nice.” In your opinion, it’s kinda refreshing to know there is someone else willing to help! “I have another type of question now that we’re being all secretive…. Besides pudding, do you ever make anything else for the kids? I’m more of a main course chef than a dessert chef, myself.” You adjust your glasses.

“Of course, I do! Cakes, cookies, twinkies, cupcakes, crepes, pies, muffins, anything really! But if you really want to know the best one, it’s the house’s special, my own creation: The Lonely Lady’s Heart Melter. It’s a type of tiramisu but with my own twist.” Kobashi is really proud of his hobby.

“Why is it named like that…?” You’re getting Matilda proud vibes here…

“Because it’s so good, it made Yareli smile.” Kobashi gets closer to whisper, then winks and laughs. “Though, I don’t cook those for children, its side-effects are too dangerous: Yareli actually confessed to me after eating it.”

“Woah, sounds like bull— I mean, incredible!” You don’t believe a word he says, but one part of you wants to believe.

“You’re lying again, Officer Kobashi.” Yareli shows up with a tray of food in her hands! She’s… angry expressionless! “I told you if I didn’t have a boyfriend, I would’ve considered dating you.”

“Isn’t that the same…?” You don’t get the difference. “Wait, you have a boyfriend?”

“I don’t want to discuss my private life in public.” Yareli refuses to open up. Maybe you’ll have to cook that dessert for her…

“You brought it up tho.” You scratch the back of your head.

“If I only dismissed it, you would’ve assumed he was telling the truth.” Yareli counterargues.

“But I was telling the truth.” Kobashi doesn’t get it.

“There was more nuance to my answer.” Yareli’s cold demeanor is confusing to you. “Your friend is waiting, Mr. Noon. Let’s go inside.” Yareli gets ahead and goes inside.

“…” You two are left speechless. This lady makes no sense.

You find it charming.

All these women actually have legit reasons to feel grateful to Johnny though. Nina, Scarlet, Nariko, Yu Yan, and Ruby have all had their lives pulled out of the absolute dumps thanks to Johnny, so it's not just simple unrequited attraction with any of them.

“So, uh, what’s the recipe?” You want the overwhelming power of Kobashi’s Super Recipe! You have no idea for what exactly, but he bigged it up so much, you think there is a good reason for it.

“Haha, you have someone in mind?” Kobashi has a hearty laugh.

“No.” You deadpan.

“Oh.” Kobashi isn’t laughing anymore. “Tell me how it goes if you use it. I’ll write it down and leave it on Yareli’s desk, you go and meet your friend.”

“Thanks, and thanks for the drink as well!” You start catching up to Yareli as soon as you finish talking. Kobashi might end up being the key to helping Wilma out of this!

The moment to retrieve Oliver from his cell has arrived. You walk by Yareli’s side as she opens the room she pointed at yesterday, inside there is a little hallway with two prison cells by the right side, one is empty and the other one is hosting a prisoner. The whole room is cream colored except for the bars, which you find very strange. Yareli takes her baton from her side and lightly beats one of the steel bars.

“Your nutritious breakfast is here.” Yareli announces to the mysterious prisoner in the cell. “Also, you have a visitor.”

The man lifts his head up, and slowly turns around to be face to face with you two.

“Oh my god! You must be the man that sent me that message! You just look like him! What I’m going to say will be hard to believe, sir, but I come from the future and I know your future son Johnny!” It’s Oliver! It’s really him! And he’s acting like an idiot, and he has a beard for some reason…

“What the hell are you talking about? I’m just your good old friend, Phil Noon.” You subtly wink at him. “I was looking for you, man. How did you get here?”

“Oh. Ooooh! Phil, how I missed you, my dear friend of so many battles!” Oliver seems to have gotten it. You thought it would’ve been more difficult than that. “And I’m not exactly sure how I got here.”

“What’s up with the beard?” You think it’s impossible he grew one so fast.

“I’ve been here for years, man!” Oliver exaggerates for no reason.

“It’s been a day since we imprisoned you.” Yareli confidently corrects.

“Take that thing off.” You glare. He looks stupid. You’re the only one here allowed to look stupid.

“Aww…” Oliver takes his beard off.

“I knew it was fake.” Yareli would be angry if she could display any emotion. “Why is he always acting so odd?”

“He’s part of the Drama club.” You say the first thing that comes to mind in a panicky response.

“Fascinating. What’s that?” Yareli is curious.

“Huh, you know, doing extracurricular activities such as acting and stuff after school.” You’re not an artsy guy, how are you supposed to explain that?
>>
>>4937172

“I understand.” Yareli sounds disappointed. “Come closer, prisoner. I’ll feed you.” Yareli pulls a chair with her leg and sits right next to the cell, there is a little opening that she opens where she’s presumably going to feed him through.

“Why are you doing this?” You don’t get it.

“Why wouldn’t I? He’s a prisoner.” Officer Yareli is happy to do this job.

“I told her I could eat on my own, but she keeps insisting...” Oliver isn’t the weird one for once.

“I would like to remind you that you can leave any moment you want, but the food is for prisoners.” Officer Yareli is abusing her power.

“I know, I know…” Oliver seems resigned to his fate.

Why though?

What do you do?

“Officer, you know what’s happening at the orphanage, right?” You’ll bring this up so Yareli knows you’re an ally in this cause.

“I knew you were the high school student Kobashi was referring to, you were friendly with all of them. Her group.” Yareli responds without dropping the food she’s feeding to Oliver. Kobashi didn’t mention you directly, huh? “But unlike him, I can’t trust people just based on feelings.” Maybe because she doesn’t seem to have any. “It doesn’t mean I hold anything against you.”

“What are we talking about here?” Oliver says as he chows down his food.

“He doesn’t know?” Yareli finds this suspicious.

“It’s a long story, but I got tangled up in this on my own.” You’ll be honest with her. “I just mentioned it because I wanted you to know I’m here to help too.”

“You’re a mere citizen, you should mind your own business.” Yareli doesn’t appreciate your efforts. You get it though; you don’t want random people putting themselves in dangerous situations like this.

“I can’t stand there and do nothing.” You won’t let anyone hurt your tomatoes!

“Your heroics can potentially cause more harm than you think.” Yareli isn’t going to change her mind. She hasn’t missed her timing feeding Oliver, which you find odd and impressive… “There are members in this community that know what they are doing when they help, like myself and Officer Kobashi. What you think of as a risk could be a death trap.”

“I’m sorry if I caused any trouble, I try not to be impulsive. But there is a line between good judgment and inaction.” You’re used to jumping the gun, but you’re getting a lil’ better at this. You need to trust yourself even a little if you don’t want to live with regrets.

“You don’t sound authentically apologetic.” Yareli isn’t convinced by what you’re saying.

“It’s difficult to be when I don’t regret it one bit. I’ve fucked up before, big time, I’m not that narcissistic to not apologize when I screwed up.” You might be underselling how much you’ve fucked up though.

“Mind your language.” Yareli is also sensitive to swearing. Kinda bizarre calling her sensitive… “With that attitude, you’re going to get yourself into a situation you won’t be able to get help with. Where I won’t be able to help. Those who care about your well-being will suffer greatly. Please reconsider your way of actions, Mr. Noon.”

“I know, it’s just…” You hold your breath for a second, perhaps you’re being too stubborn. “Yeah, you’re right, Officer Yareli. I just wanted you to know I’m here to help in whatever you need me for. I need to make sure Wilma and the others are fine.”

“W-Wait, Wilma?” Oliver is in shock after taking the last bite of bread.

“Then tell me who you really are and why you’re getting involved.” Yareli isn’t going to trust strangers with pretty speeches and supposedly good intentions.

But what can you say to convince her then?

How do you respond?

>“Just a guy trying to do his best to help out.” Adjust your glasses.
>“I’m a time traveler from the future.” Tell Yareli the whole truth so she can trust you!

“I’m a time traveler from the future trying to do his best to help out.” You adjust your glasses with confidence to show you mean it.

“I knew it.” Yareli shockingly responds.

“Y-You did?” You’re in shock!

“He kept saying that, and you’re his friend, you’re both involved in something.” Yareli might not be dumb at all, or way too dumb to actually believe in Oliver. You live in a land of extremes, because you’re extreme yourself. Extremely cool. You give yourself a mental high five.

“Wait, you believe me? Why did you throw me in jail then?” Oliver feels betrayed and confused.

“I was doing my job.” Yareli has a strange sense of morals. “And I’m exaggerating, that explanation doesn’t suffice, I don’t believe you’re time travelers.”

“Okay, allow me to elaborate then…”

You explain what’s going on with your time travelling shenanigans the same way you did with Chio and Wilma. So you didn’t specify about the future, claiming that revealing too much of it could be dangerous and yadda yadda, again. Yareli remains emotionless as always, which adds to your anxiety. She begins speaking.

“This far exceeded my expectations.” Yareli feels too small in this world. You think. She looks the same.

“You really believe us this time?!” Oliver is happy but wary.

“I saw you materialize on that roof, Mr. Major. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Don’t you believe it wasn’t a little bit convenient that I showed up so quickly?” Yareli confesses. Welp, she kept some things secret from you. The fact she was actually willing to do this much means she was really interested or afraid of what Oliver could do.

“W-Why didn’t you tell me?!” Oliver is feeling more and more betrayed.

“I’ve witnessed strange events in this town, how could I know it wasn’t my eyes pulling tricks?” Yareli admits.

“B-B-But I told you I—”

“Quiet down. You can’t trust all the people in the station, just me and Kobashi.” Yareli interrupts Oliver before he has another meltdown.

“He said the same thing.” You smile. Yareli doesn’t respond.

Yareli opens the cell to let Oliver go.

“Free again!” Oliver exclaims as he leaves the cell, he half hugs you, putting one arm around your neck. “Thank you, Phil!” He is really grateful, but he could’ve left anytime he wanted… Or maybe he’s thanking you for coming to the past for him? You’ll have to ask later, either way, it made you smile.

“Here is my number for if you have a phone. Right now, we won’t be able to help you until we close the case with the orphanage, but don’t hesitate in calling me if you need anything.” Yareli hands you a piece of paper. “My shift ends now, so I’ll be going.”

“Thank you for trusting us, Officer Yareli.” You try to be humble.

“I can’t say I was being objective after what I heard about you, and saw how happy those girls were around you.” Yareli confesses. Maybe finding her bike would’ve made things even easier. You’re still going to be on the lookout. “I hope our humble town can be of comfort during your stay, well, despite what you already know. I…”

Yareli closes her eyes and almost loses her balance. You were ready to catch her, but it wasn’t necessary.

“You okay?” You wonder.

“Mhm. I’m merely tired after my shift, it happens often. I’ll be going.” Yareli starts walking away…

What do you do? (You’ll get the recipe, don’t worry)

>Offer to take Officer Yareli home. She doesn’t have her bike after all.
>Time to go back to the camper. Matilda and Wilma are waiting.
>Once outside, ask Oliver what has happened to him since he arrived.

“You sure you’re fine? We can accompany you home if you need.” You offer. “I’d like to return the favor for what you’ve done.”

“I’d rather you two go on with your businesses.” Yareli politely refuses your offer.

“I figured. No harm in asking.” You make those shoulders work as you shrug.

“I’ll insist then. I was the one causin’ you trouble, wasn’t I?” Oliver is eager to make amends. “I bet you’re tired ‘cause of dealing with my stuff.”

“It’s my job.” Yareli continues to refuse. “Follow me to my desk, I nearly forgot to give you your papers, Mr. Major.”

“Right…” Oliver is disappointed that Yareli is a tough nut to crack.

You three leave the pristine cells behind and go back to the station proper. At her desk, you grab Kobashi’s recipe that he left on the desk as Oliver is being handed whatever his papers are. You split with Yareli right outside the entrance of the station. Yareli walks straight without much issue which eases your worries just a little bit.

“Should we follow her?” Oliver asks out of nowhere, more concerned than you for Yareli. “I think we should.”

What do you do?

“Why though?” You want to hear what a known mad man has to say. “Let’s watch over her while you explain it to me.” You can do more than one thing at the time unlike your cookie-stealing little sister.

“You’re the sneaking guru, so I’m following your lead.” Oliver will allow you to lead this operation. Aren’t you just too tall to be that…?

“Didn’t you sneak inside many places? Including the clinic I worked at?” You raise an eyebrow. Oliver is not a stranger to moving stealthily.

“You caught me, didn’t you? Good times.” Oliver holds you in high reward.

“No, they weren’t.” You shake your head. He tried to steal your volleyball! “I don’t know why I’m arguing, just walk behind me.” You start Operation Following The Law… Enforcer.

You follow Yareli at a long enough distance for her to be visible at your range without acting out of the ordinary. Any time she takes a moment to stop walking, you stop as well and play fool. The streets in this town are not inhabited enough for you to use any other method without looking more suspicious. As you walk along, you listen to Oliver’s drivel.

“So, why?” You regurgitate your question.

“After telling us to shut our mouths in the cell, don’t you think she’s afraid of being overheard by someone?” Oliver brings up what happened earlier. “Unless someone was trying to eavesdrop, I don’t think anyone could hear us in there.”

“You got a point there.” You expected him to ramble.

“W-Why do you look disappointed…?” Oliver is a little confused by your expression.

“Me? What are you talking about?” You shrug. “Wait, hide. She’s talking to someone…” You urge Oliver to go inside an alleyway, you both peek out…

Yareli is having a chat with Sieb Bruun, the man you met at the orphanage, both parties are too inexpressive for you to discern what’s going on…

What do you do?

“Oliver, wait here, I’m getting closer to listen in.” You order the ex-convict as you start turning invisible. You didn’t give Oliver a chance to respond, but you’re sure he’s going to behave!

With caution and swiftness, you approach them to listen to what they’re talking about. Yareli notices the light sound your steps were making, but since she didn’t spot anyone. She disregards her bad feeling and continues talking…

“Is there anything wrong?” Seib asks as he notices Yareli losing her focus.

“The wind is pulling tricks on me.” Yareli will resent the breezes around her for a long time. She puts a hand on her temple as she appears dizzy.

“Nghaha, the tiredness you mention is getting to you? You should be careful, officer.” Seib appears to be worried.

“You seem in high spirits for someone who lost his child.” Yareli retorts with the same emotion as always.

“I’m deeply hurting, officer, but I have the responsibility to put up appearances for the sake of the rest of the children. To give them strength.” Seib tilts his head upwards and looks down at Yareli. “I thought someone like yourself, officer, would be more understanding about how others handle their own emotions. I’ve heard what other people say about you, but I’m sure you’re as kind as our previous interactions have shown.”

“Don’t misunderstand me. My observation helped you open up, didn’t it?” Yareli acts like she’s going ahead of Seib’s thought process.

“That's remarkable.” Seib is about to chuckle. “You’re truly more perceptive than you let on. In that same vein, you should understand why I’m requesting you to let me know first, correct?”

“I thought you two were closer.” Yareli would raise an eyebrow, but her facial expression range is as extensive as that of a picture…

“I plead for you not to start spreading some rumors.” Seib creepily smiles. “I will rely on you and officer Kobashi, he seemed to be a nice fellow. I’ll be going, you should get some rest.” Seib walks past her as he walks away.

“Have a good morning, Mr. Bruun.” Yareli goes her way. You can see Seib staring at her from the corner of his eyes…

What do you do?

Without delay, you put on your hood and return to the same alleyway you were with Oliver before, you turn back visible and tell him what to do.

“Follow Seib, I’ll keep on tracking Yareli. He doesn’t know you so it’ll be fine for the most part. Keep an eye on him until he returns to the orphanage, or as long as he keeps acting suspicious, it’s your call. We’ll meet outside of the Police Station once we’re done.” You tell Oliver your plan as quickly as possible.

“Who’s Zeff?” Oliver didn’t get it.

“T-The guy who was talking with Yareli... And it’s Seib.” There is literally nobody else! “I’m counting on you.” You wave your hands in front of Oliver as you turn back invisible.

“Roger that.” Oliver is confident in getting this done, and you’ll trust him for the job. You sprint away to pursue Yareli.

Now that your sole focus is to follow Yareli, you can take it slightly easier since you don’t have to take Oliver into account, but you cannot get caught! You’re the Sneaking Guru after all! The Host of the Lightsbane! And all that crap Oliver keeps calling you. Invisibility is overkill at this point, so you drop it while hiding behind a bush.

You continue walking through town, all vigilant to your surroundings, but mostly to the expressionless cop. Yareli stops in front of a house rather modest in size and appearance, and takes her keys out. This must be hers! You noticed all the houses on these streets are rather similar, and all of them made out of wood.

Yareli picks up her key and notices a little box right on the doorstep. She grabs it and takes off the note of it, her eyes move from left to right reading its content. After so much Yareli-watching, you think she gets disturbed by what it is about, and hurries to put the box down with the note on it. Well, maybe the way she hastily put it all down was a bigger give than your Yareli-watching experience, but any type of non-verbal communication counts! Right?

“Is someone out there?” Yareli is tipped off by something. Whether it was You, the box, or something else, you can’t tell. You haven’t noticed anything…

What do you do?

Yareli's behavior actually all fits into the mold of having a stalker doesn't it? I lean towards paranoia, I'll fully admit. We haven't seen or heard anything to suggest someone's in her house, but then again if I was trying to get the drop on someone I'd hide inside their house rather than outside on the street somewhere.

Phrased another way, we haven't seen anything outside yet to suggest someone's in the house but we have seen evidence to suggest Yareli's worried about someone being around...and we haven't seen the inside of the house.

To be fair it could just be us that she's got this creepy vibe from.

Better keep quiet in case someone else shows up. Taking into account everything like her bike being stolen, acting all tense from having her guard up, the mysterious package that might be not good, it appears she’s being stalked by someone (you don’t count (you’re not even stalking her (probably))).

Yareli steps back, slowly turns around looking everywhere, she’s trying to find anything out of the ordinary, once she lays her eyes on you (you’re invisible), she closes her eyes and puts her hand on her forehead. She appears to be exhausted. Yareli gets back to her doorstep, moves the box outside of it with her feet, unlocks the door and goes inside very quickly – you don’t hear her walk inside.

A couple of minutes pass and you’re starting to feel bored. It’s kinda mean to say, but you have to be honest with yourself. It’s so dead quiet, you think this place would be great to stay for a nap. But there is no nap time now, no, it’s time to quietly stare at a door. Yeah. It’s not doing much. You wait another couple of minutes and the scenery stays the same, which prompts you to make a decision…

What do you do?

I suspect Yareli is waiting for us at the door.

Can we try to play with our power a bit? Given our abilities we ought to be able to 'zoom in' our vision. Let's use that to take a look at the box, then we can decide whether to approach the door or not.

If we have to drop invis to do so then move somewhere out of sight first I guess.

Investigating this application now will put us on the path to addressing one of Johnny's greatest weaknesses...that's right, one day he might be able to passively correct his vision with Philo's power instead of needing glasses!

I had the zoom vision idea too, but I didn't know how it would work here. I guess its a case of "able to receive and process more visual input or light properly, so can see farther" with Johnny using his power. Reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_vision is crazy by the way
>>
>>4943761
Well we can manipulate light to the extent of invisibility. Creating some spirit zoom-lenses shouldn't be that hard. At least that's how I figured it. I mean if we want to be real strict with only being able to manipulate light on/near Johnny's body then at worst we'd have to pantomime holding a telescope with our hands so the lenses got created with our fingers. That would truly be a worst case scenario since we'd look so lame.
>>
>>4943769
Only an ultra-dork would try to use their powers as a hand-telescope anywhere but on a real ship on the water. Other than that, I agree.

Sorry, guys, I don't get how this works. I read the bird stuff, and I don't think that does much for Johnny (He doesn't have the same type of eye as a bird). Can someone explain to me how it works or what I should watch to understand it?

Anyway, instead of delaying the thread any further, are you guys okay with just approaching the box for now? I’ll bring up the zooming stuff later if it works.

(Connection issues are still ongoing, I literally have no upload speed, so this thread will continue this weekend as well, unless the issues haven't been fixed by then. >>4944581
>Sorry, guys, I don't get how this works.
Sorry i didn't mean to make this more complicated than it needed to be, I just wanted to expand Johnny's powerset.

As for how this works, I figured Johnny could jut form a spirit version of a glass lens however many inches out from his eye in order to act as essentially a spy glass and magnify whatever he's looking at.

If that was beyond his capability then he should be able to form a spirit spyglass by forming spirit-lenses between his fingers, but he'd have to act and look like a dumbass that was holding an invisible spyglass for it to work.

Here's a little explanation on the basics of the optics that I figured we'd be taking advantage of:
https://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/users/gruff/default/Astrolab/07BasicTelescopeOptics.htm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v7bN13PjZ8

I figured this would be solidly in the realm of doable for Johnny seeing as he's already intuitively creating optical phenomena when we go invisible and when we put Philo on our glasses to search different wavelengths of light.

You have a hunch Yareli is waiting for someone at the door, and you don’t want to end up being that person, so you’ll have to be careful moving forward to not be spotted. You have sneaked everywhere successfully, but it’s not the time to get cocky! On your toes you go!

You’ve arrived close to the package. You’re within reaching distance if you choose to grab it. Philonune stresses that you’re probably being watched by Yareli (Or the unsmiling woman, as he likes to call her. In a way, these two are opposites.), so it’s not as easy as to go and pick it up. Well, the note is readable:

“You’ve been interested in us lately, why don't you take this present to relax?” There is no sender...

If your mafia jargon is as good as you think it is, this is a threat! Police dramas are somewhat useful! Nariko might be onto something…. Aside from treats.

What do you do?

>Open up the box. Who cares if Officer Yareli is watching?
>Steal the package! Touch it to turn it invisible and leave the property.
>Distract Yareli by knocking on the window on the other side of the house.
>Walk back, hide to turn off your invisibility, and wait for Yareli to go to sleep to look into the box. She was tired, right? It can’t take all day, right?
>Write In.

I don't understand how he would zoom in, I get he can see objects from afar, but I don't know if he can distinguish them due to perspective (too small to actually see what he needs). Please explain!

You’re not going to leave something dangerous here, and since you’re clue gathering, it’s better to take the package away. You turn to the side and check if Yareli is actively looking at the box, you can’t discern if that’s the case or not, but by the looks of it, it would be really difficult for her to do it in this instant. This is as good a chance as you’re going to get, you must do it quickly before you start suffering some of the side effects.

With your fingertips you touch the box, the invisibility spreads in a couple of seconds. You secure the package in your hands, and walk away from the property. You walk down a couple of blocks away, following the same path back to downtown. In a random alley between a bathhouse and a store, you hide and take off your veil.

You have the package in your hands…

Hmm, I was really only after him being able to see objects from afar via creating something equivalent to an imaginary glass lens. If he can make optics components like lenses using Philo's power then we can actually put that to some pretty broad uses. I'm not sure where your lack of understanding is rooted at so I'm not sure how to explain it, I'm sorry. I'll try something else at some other point in time that will hopefully be more intuitive to implement.

You didn’t commit such a misdemeanor to not have a little peep, did you? Now it’s time to find out what the contents of this box are! You carefully get rid of the sticky tape to not damage the paper wrapping it, in case you want to put it all back together.

It's like a shoe box, but bigger, so not like a shoe box at all in a sense, just a regular package. The point is, it has a cardboard lid. You take it off…

There are a few items inside, some pictures of an old couple, one of a couple of young guys and girls around Yareli’s age, kids and a dog – and Kobashi as well. There is a cassette too, and more importantly, a voodoo doll of Yareli that’s been used to, well, curse! Creepy stuff all around.

You’re not sure you know what you’re supposed to do with this stuff, and looking at them doesn’t clue you in about much. If you had to take a guess, these are family members, maybe friends as well…

Hey, at least it won’t explode.

What do you do?

>Go to the Station and meet up with Oliver.
>Go back to Yareli’s house and show her this stuff, get some answers.
>Return to the Camper and deliver the box. Maybe Matilda can look into this while you go back to meet with Oliver.

The content of this box is rather alarming, leaving this for later would be madness, Yareli might get in trouble before you even get to discuss with the others, you should meet with her and talk about it – doesn’t matter how strange it is for you to put your nose where it doesn’t belong. You put everything back inside with haste, including the papers you meticulously removed before.

You jog back to where this package was delivered first to get some answers! At the door, you have no other option but to knock, since she doesn’t have a doorbell. Footsteps are heard after your second attempt, so you stop being so loud. You feel a little anxiety trying to come up with a way to explain how you got here.

Yareli peeks through her window by opening her curtains on the right side of the house, you wave at her as casually as you can, she never looked pleased before and now is not the exception as she closes the curtains and you hear her coming over faster than before. The door gets unlocked.

“What are you doing here? How’d you find me?” Yareli doesn’t waste a second, she wants her answers. She’s wearing a sleeping robe, and has her hair down, it’s cute…

“Officer, I—”

“What do you have in your hands?” Yareli notices the package as she interrupts, she closes the door’s gap quite a bit.

“Yeah, it was here and—”

Here? You opened the package that was delivered here? The dangerous one? Are you okay?” Yareli puts one hand on your chin and forcibly makes your head turn both sides, as she absentmindedly reopened the door to its fullest. She notices you’re fine and relaxes for a second, but then she tenses up again. You think. It’s Yareli after all. “You owe me an explanation now, what’s the meaning of this? Were you stalking me? Why are you looking through my mail? This is a serious invasion of my privacy and a felony, Mr. Noon.

Yareli is not one bit happy about this (or angry, or sad, or anything really), you expected as much, now it’s time to turn the tables and show her you’re on her side!
>>

What do you do?

>“I know, but I was worried, you were looking wobbly and I decided to make sure you arrived fine at your house. Sorry, I know I’m stupid.” Apologize to calm Yareli down! Even if she already looks calm.
>“Put me in prison and do whatever you want to me, I’ll pay my dues, but please, you need to tell me what’s going on with this. Are you in danger? Do you need help?” Show Yareli what’s inside the box while showing your concern.
>“Look, I saw you acting suspicious and I decided to follow you. I don’t think you’re dangerous anymore but what I found greatly concerns me.” Explain to Yareli you were looking for yourself.
>“I think I love you.” Blurt out like an idiot. Confuse her out of her anger.
>“You should know if a time traveller is looking after you, it means you’re important.” You’re going to ignore the fact you helped a bunch of people that weren’t involved in anything as far as you know.
>“Oh yeah? I’m the one dangerous here? Then explain this, you witch!” Show Yareli her doll inside the box! She’s the evil one!

I don't think that acting like we were worried unconditionally is the way to get through/out of this. Yareli is the sort that very well might actually put us in jail (at least temporarily) for this. She has also expressed displeasure with the idea that we might perform naive heroics.

So let's hit back at her with a bit of her attitude from before to show that we were employing non-naive heroics.

>“Look, I saw you acting suspicious and I decided to follow you. I don’t think you’re dangerous anymore but what I found greatly concerns me.” Explain to Yareli you were looking for yourself.

"If you don't trust people by default then it would be unreasonable if you expected other people to do so for you. Especially when I can definitely tell that you have more going on than it first appears.

But I can see now that you're being skittish because you're in trouble and being stalked (uhh...by someone other than me I mean). Now that I know I can't do anything but help. I told you about what Oliver and I are stuck in, now you tell me what you're stuck in and we can help each other."

If she still seems like she's gonna throw us in jail then pull the "time traveler, you're important" card.

Noon.”

“I know, but I was worried, you were looking wobbly and I decided to make sure you arrived at your house alright. Sorry, I know I’m stupid.” You apologize for being overbearing. Lying wouldn’t do any good in this situation.

I knew someone was following me around…” Yareli doesn’t feel crazier anymore as she mutters to reassure herself. “You should know that we judge people by their actions, not their intentions, and quite frankly I’m deeply disturbed by yours. You’re acting like nothing more than a self-righteous immature stalker if I take you at face value; you’ve transgressed many of my boundaries and went against my wishes. Therefore, I find your concerns about my well-being insincere as well. It’s quite difficult to trust you, even a smidgen.”

“That’s fair, I’m sorry…” That’s a long-winded way to call you a creep… Which you were, you only wanted to make sure she was okay, but you overstepped her boundaries. You’re an idiot… At least, just by judging her actions, it seems she doesn’t find you truly dangerous.

“Mr. Noon. Answer me this, why did you return here with the box opened?” Yareli is extremely wary of you right now, and a bad answer here could turn things ugly.

Yareli doesn’t want to give you any clues, but from her perspective, it’s weird you’re doing all this now. If you cared about her returning home fine, you wouldn’t have shown yourself right now with the box opened, right? Perhaps she thinks you’re doing this to satisfy your own curiosity. Maybe if you explain yourself, she’ll understand where you’re coming from, despite how misguided your actions were. Or maybe you’re all wrong, and it’s wishful thinking on your part that she’ll be understanding enough to listen to what you’re trying to say, and she’s thinking about taking you to the station. It’s complicated, you’re under pressure, and you don’t know what to do… What a great mix.

How do you respond?

>“I wasn’t planning on talking to you, but I saw your reaction to the package, and I was concerned about what was wrong. You have to admit you never lose your cool, so that was out of the ordinary.” Continue being honest.
>“You got me, you acted weird so I got curious about it. I opened it up, and I needed more answers.” Lie, but make it sound convincing
>“Are you going to put me in jail…?” Raise your hands to Yareli to be cuffed. You’re not the enemy and you’ll prove it.
>Escape. Yareli is just trying to make some time to decide how she’s going to catch you.

This really isn't the tact we should be taking. Every is indicating that the more we reveal that we were acting impulsively without a plan the less she'll trust us. If you want to win this situation then we need to demonstrate that we're intelligent and had a plan with all this rather than being a fucking honest idiot. What sort of behavior do you think put Yareli into the position of being blackmailed with what's in this box? I'd be willing to bet it's EXACTLY the sort of idiotic honesty and trust we're displaying right now.

>Write-In
"I returned with this box open to see what it was that had you on edge, and I got my answer. Your behavior was abnormal ever since you were way too tired walking out the station, did you think I didn't notice? There were things that weren't adding up and I wanted to see what the missing pieces were. Like you've been saying so far, trusting someone just based on feelings is a foolish thing to do. In fact, I bet what's inside this box has something to do with when you learned that lesson.

Now are we going to talk about this in depth, or do you want to keep getting blackmailed by whoever sent this?"

With my vote my main goal was to tell her that we weren't just curious or some stalker to get her to calm down first. I don't think our posts are mutually exclusive and in fact think it would be a good explanation to follow up with. Or at least something similar
>>
>>4949456
I guess they're not entirely exclusive. However, the way I read your post vs. my post is that in yours our main concern is her and her wellbeing, whereas in mine our primary concern was our own wellbeing. In this situation where she's doubting our sincerity, or at least the intent behind our actions, it's better that we demonstrate to her that our motivations don't line up with the presumptuous hero we've thus far shown ourselves to be.
>>
>>4949478
We can reasonably say both though. No matter what the fact that her having this package was a surprise remains, even if we followed cause we were suspicious. It's not too out there to grow concerned after seeing a potentially dangerous package with how she was acting, hence why we took it away at first. We've already admitted that at least part of the reason was out of concern so there's no use hiding that part anymore

“I wasn’t planning on talking to you, but I saw your reaction to the package, and I was concerned about what was wrong. You have to admit you never lose your cool, so that was out of the ordinary.” Honesty is the policy you can have to genuinely gain people’s trust. “I thought it was dangerous at first but when I saw what was inside, I only ended up more worried.”

“So you came for answers?” Yareli wants you to get to the point.

“I came back here because I was too concerned that something might happen to you.” You firmly retort.

“Impulsive, aren’t you?” Yareli is sounding grumpy. “…Return the box to me and leave my property before I change my mind and take you to prison.”

“I can’t turn around and leave, it’s not that simple anymore.” You shake your head.

“I’m giving you two options; you’ll have to face the consequences…” Yareli isn’t looking too sharp to make threats. But you imagine she’s going to do anything in her power to make it happen.

Yareli threw the box away, meaning she thought it was dangerous or something, now that it’s known that there is no danger, you assume she wants to know what it has. She probably doesn’t want you involved so she’s trying to get rid of you, one reason might be that she thinks of you as a liability – or, in a better scenario, she’s concerned about your wellbeing… Or neither is true and she hates your guts and wants you out of here at all costs, but she’s too tired to deal with you. Those are your guesses anyway.

What do you do?

>“I have no idea how you’re planning to take me there, but I’m not leaving until I’m sure you’ll be fine on your own.” You’re going to act strong-headed.
>“To the station we go then.” You’re going to keep the damn box.

“That’s fine. Here. Have it.” You hand the package to Yareli without much of a protest. “Look into it and tell me everything is fine after, and I’ll chill.”

“No, this is enough, leave my property.” Yareli wants to bake her cake and eat it too! Who does she think she is? Nina?

“You heard me, open it up, tell me it’s okay, and I’ll leave. I promise.” You adjust your glasses. You’re not moving anywhere until she tells you it’s fine.

“I won’t regret taking you to jail if you fail to fulfill this deal.” Yareli threatens.

“I know you were planning to do it anyway since you don’t trust me, so if I do leave, see it as a bonus.” You shrug.

“…” Yareli opens the box with one hand and rummages through its contents briefly. “It’s fine.” Yareli looks up to you and looks into your eyes with her usual indifference… Then she absentmindedly drops the box onto the ground, spilling its contents without even flinching. You guess she was affected by it…

“A-Are you okay?” You suspect Yareli’s actions show her real emotions more than her facial expressions can.

“You need to trust your local community’s officers.” Officer Yareli sounds like an answering machine. Her hands are trembling, but suddenly she stops them from vibrating. She goes down to her knees to recollect the dropped items. You help her out because you’re not a heartless human being. “Thank you.”

“It’s no problem…” The mood change is too radical for you to know how to handle it either.

“Well then, I thought we made a deal. Now go away.” Yareli is way too resistant to ask for help anymore.

How do you respond?

>“You might say it’s fine, but you don’t act like it is. Can I be worried now? Can I help you?” Maybe your actions suck but you still have the best intentions!
>“Yeah, sure. Do you want me to bring officer Kobashi with me when I come back?” Yareli doesn’t trust you, so bring someone she trusts.

“Can we stop pretending that I’m the stubborn one here? Tell me what’s going on.” You don’t want to keep delaying this explanation any further.

“…” Yareli doesn’t want to respond; she holds the box tight to her chest.

“From the stuff that’s inside the box, I can take a guess that the sender might also have been involved with your missing bike.” You continue talking to trigger another response.

“Perhaps.” Yareli thinks it’s likely now that you mention it. “But that’s none of your business.”

“You asked me to look for it though, so technically it is now.” You outsmart her with your stupidity. “C’mon, spell it out.”

“I won’t involve an innocent bystander in this.” Yareli won’t budge.

“Innocent? You wanted to take me to jail...” You remark.

“Your quips won’t get you anywhere but there.” The policewoman resorts to threats again…

“I don’t know about that, we’re going in circles.” And you can’t go to prison like that! Your comebacks are getting smarter by the second! “Tell me, Yareli. There’s no rule saying my local officer can’t get help from a citizen.”

“...” Yareli closes her eyes and thinks about it deeply. “I prowled around the Orphanage of the Blue’s businesses, gathering enough clues to request an investigation and a possible break-in, I never heard a response from the higher ups. Shortly after, my house was ransacked, the clues disappeared and the harassment started. I’m convinced part of the high command and some members in the station are involved. They want me to leave the station.”

“Does Kobashi know?” If those two are great friends, he should, right?

“He knows most of it. We both worked together, but I sent the request under my name, I had to rush it for personal reasons. I’m the only one getting targeted and I haven’t disclosed it to him.” Yareli confesses. “Are you content now?”

You feel like something doesn’t add up…

“Why are you leaving stuff out to me? To scare me so I don’t get involved?” You continue to be blunt.

“You’re quite perceptive.” Yareli is somewhat impressed, or maybe not, you’ll never be sure with her. Unless you study her mannerisms, which you’ve been trying these last conversations.

“I get involved when I see jackasses treating decent people terribly. It’s a bad habit, I know, but I’m not going to just walk away from anyone who needs help, and that includes you.” You can’t help yourself anymore, maybe going from ignoring the problems to actively engaging with all of them is quite the radical change, but maturing is all about knowing when to pick your fights, right? And you know you need to fight right now!

“Watch your mouth.” The Policewoman really dislikes profanities…

“Sorry, but you get my point, right?” You don’t want to waste time with chit chat anymore.

“You’re going to get involved regardless of what I do.” Yareli spills it out in simple terms.

“Exactly.” You’ll do what you have to do because you’re clingy like Nariko, unrelenting like Yu Yan, efficient like Matilda, easy to anger like Lise, comfy like Bradford Jr., shady like Kata’s nursing degree, immature like Richard, and you forgot what the hell your point was. Are you even any of these things…? “You still need help and I’m here to provide it.”

Another man in my life that doesn’t know when to quit…” Yareli shakes her head, the mixed emotions she’s feeling result in the same stoic expression as always. Maybe you’re projecting your feelings on her or something, like a pet, but people can tell when dogs and cats are displeased. Why couldn’t you do the same with this seemingly emotionless pretty lady? It may be that she’s not an animal…

“No more code talk with me, Yareli. Be 100% honest with me.” You want nothing but the truth.

“I’m deeply uncomfortable wearing this outside.” Yareli went off-topic immediately.

“Oh.” You’re kinda used to people wearing whatever they want when talking to you… You’re becoming a weird person.

“Now that you’re aware of my discomfort, we can continue.” Yareli wants to get this done. “I…” She almost trips, and again, she regains her composure before you can grab her. Maybe the conversation has gone for far too long.

“You okay?” You ask.

“Yes.” Yareli is not being honest… again.

What do you do?

“You were a little vague before. What were those personal reasons? And why didn’t you tell Kobashi about this?” You need some answers that clarify those bits.

“Officer Kobashi has gotten himself in trouble far too many times before in the force, he has a reputation as a troublemaker, another transgression on his name and he would lose his job. I was willing to carry the burden this time.” Yareli explains without hesitation. It must be true then. “He should be focusing his efforts on taking down the Orphanage and not wasting them on me. He’s a committed individual to any good cause and prolific finding evidence. The victims are and will always be our priority.”

“I think I understand.” You scratch the back of your head. You were expecting a long-winded explanation but this is a nice change of pace. “So, a troublemaker, huh? What did he do?”

“The small incidents are many, he’s no stranger to doing activities like the ones you’ve done, but what gets on the police force’s nerves is that he constantly goes against the office’s wishes for public order. Always dead set on coming to the aid of those in need, regardless of consequences.” Yareli’s admiration for Kobashi is endearing. Yeah, maybe you’re projecting, but there is a reason she confessed to him, right? It couldn’t be just the dessert, right…? “I have to confess that he has been willing to cover for my own offenses as well, so I’m partially at fault for damaging his reputation.”

“So, he’s basically a reckless mad man who tries to be useful?” You think that sounds annoying to deal with.

“Do you not see the irony in your statement?” Yareli gets a little defensive for some reason. “I find his attitude endearing.”

“He’s a cool guy to me, that’s for sure.” You nod.

Yareli yawns. “…My apologies.”

“It’s fine.” You think Yareli needs a rest.

But still, something about what she said feels a little off…

What do you do?

“Just go to sleep. I’ll stay here to make sure nothing bad happens to you.” Bad feelings aside, you think you got enough information from her. Maybe the reason you have this weird hunch is because of how Yareli has been acting, almost showing some emotion at bits.

“You want to watch over the house for my sake outside?” Yareli isn’t convinced this is a good idea.

“I mean, I think it would help you get some actual sleep. I can tell you’ve been acting apprehensive with all of this happening.” You continue to be upfront.

“Having a stranger outside my house will look suspicious.” Yareli finds your idea incredibly odd.

“I can manage, I’ll hide.” You’ll be okay on your own.

“That’s still sketchy.” The policewoman doesn’t feel comfortable with this. She most likely wants you out of here, but… “Come in, stay inside.” Yareli invites you! Did you finally win her trust?!

“Ah?” You don’t quite believe the offer.

“You won’t raise any eyebrows this way.” Yareli has her mind set.

“And you’re comfortable with that?” You don’t think you can go from being a huge skeptic to this…

“I’ll retaliate if you do anything suspicious. You’ve been warned.” Yareli threatens.

“If you’re gonna be all wary, what’s the point?” You think this policewoman should think this over.

“I’m testing you.” Yareli is a risktaker.

“Again, if you won’t get any sleep, I don’t see why I should be inside.” You’re going to stick to your guns here.

“I’m choosing the lesser evil.” Yareli opens the door for you. “I’m in your hands.” It seems like Kobashi isn’t the only risktaker.

“Alright…” You’ve accepted this deal.

The interior of Yareli’s house reminds you of your apartment but with no walls, and if it was made out of only wood. Makes you realize how cubical and tiny the places really are without the divisions. The only surviving walls make place for Yareli’s bathroom (Same place as your kitchen would be if this was your apartment’s layout). As for the interior itself, you would describe it as tidy and harmless, devoid of any personality like a hotel room, except for one area you’re going to describe later.

Yareli makes you sit in the corner where her personal desk is, it has some vintage portable TV and a radio, both plugged into the wall. There are some papers neatly arranged, empty envelopes and pencils lying around. And more amusingly, she has a couple of plants hanging above the desk and some sort of plant creature plushy. It’s her little entertainment lounge if you will. The chair is not great though, you don’t imagine her using it often. Yareli opens one of the desk’s drawers and hands you some expensive looking headphones.

“In case you want to listen to anything. Maybe boxing is on.” Yareli puts them on the desk.

“Is it a good idea to get distracted?” You’re here to make sure she’s fine…

“I don’t like being stared at.” Yareli admits. This situation is already becoming awkward.

Yareli walks towards the kitchen area, pours a glass of milk for herself, and drinks it in one go. If you didn’t notice the 8 bottles of beer over the fridge, you would’ve said she has a healthy lifestyle. She leaves her empty glass in the sink, closes the curtains close to her bed, takes off her robe, stretches her arms for a bit, gets inside her bed and puts her sleeping mask on. She just flat out did her routine like you weren’t even here.

Good night.” Yareli says as she drops dead like a log.

“N-Night…” You don’t know how to feel.

Welp, yeah, you’re locked in here.

At least you have night vision!

It’s been a while since you've had a moment for yourself, these last few days have been exhausting, from dismantling the cult, to strip Drawtionary, to being kidnapped… You must take full advantage to chill out a little bit and let your brain decompress. You look out the window and ponder what choices in life brought you to be gazing out the window of a pretty single woman’s house in a parallel bubble dimension as she sleeps…

You have the horrible sensation that it’s all going to return to Blake for some reason, but you’ll do it anyway…

You wonder why Yareli cares about you staring at her, when she’s wearing a sleeping mask, it’s not like she can see you through it, right? And even if she could, it’s not like you can see a damn thing with the interior being this dim. You lie. You have dark vision, and you should remind everyone that already knows that you have dark vision, but she doesn’t know you have dark vision. So, she shouldn’t care at all, should she? Maybe she thinks you’re a pervert, now that’s truly a baseless accusation. You’re more than a gentleman, you’re nobility, comfy nobility! You did renounce your crown to see what was outside of the comfy horizons… It’s a cruel and uncomfy world just like this damn chair you’re sitting on… But it’s not like you can’t conquer it and turn it prosperous, warm and pleasant. Like, you could capture Yareli’s warm bed right at this moment and begin a new age! The age of Coziness. You need an army though, because culture wins are so cheap. The Cozy Crusade. Yes. Yes… You’re starting to sound like a madman, but the only difference between a madman and a visionary are results! Long live the reign of the Mad King of Comfy! Hahaha!

You went way off-topic again. You needed to ponder how you got to this point. Well, if you start from the beginning, it all goes back to your mom, and your childhood, and, eugh, Ame – and you don’t really want to think that far back. Stick to flames. You must stick to flames! Yeah, your first encounter with Bastet…! She (?) was the entity that wanted to make a deal with you! Wait, why would you try to remember her of all people? Is she even people? I mean, some people called them Ghost People, right? Who cares anyway? Philonune never cared, people or not, he’s your best friend. Skip ahead a little and… Blake in the subway. Fuck. You knew it! Skip, skip, skip…

Yeah, you teased Nina! Why? Because you were horny! No. No. That wasn’t part of your character yet. It was because of her flame. Yes. Flame. Not Nina. Nina bad. Yeah, she was Ms. Uccelli back then, it’s not because you didn’t know her first name, no, it’s because you have manners. That’s why you humiliated her in front of the class… Hell, your interactions with Yareli remind you a little of those hostile Nina times. Better not get slapped, you learned your lesson, right? Well, Nina dished that lesson and you never pay attention to her classes. But yeah, you’re not getting slapped. Or do you want to? That’s not one of your kinks, you’re not Nariko. You’re adaptable. That’s different. Yeah, no slapping.

Oh my god, you’re getting worse. Don’t go that far back. Just stick to the direct decisions that lead you here! You got here because you saw Yareli looking drowsy, because you came to take Oliver out of jail, because you needed help to tear the orphanage, to help Wilma be back with her friends, because you met with her friends during your bus ride to the school, and you got that ride because of (old) Wilma’s ability that took you here because she cried remembering her past, and because Oliver couldn’t keep his hands to himself and touched the teleporting bubble and Matilda grabbed him to stop him, and you got there because Matilda decided to take care of San Wich that ended up being Wilma, and she needed help because entities couldn’t control their hosts’ bodies, but Wilma refused to get in control anymore and you needed to cheer her up to do so, and you learned about San Wich’s existence because you asked Matilda about the mysterious message that was sent to you after you escaped the kidnapping attempt from your bully group and she told you about her…!

You focused and learned nothing… Nothing!

You feel like an important amount of time has passed. One part of you thinks you’ll see something interesting soon.

“That part of you is me, partner. I can feel it.” Philonune smiles, he loves staring outside.

What do you do?

Yeah, Philonune’s gut feelings never fail you! Even though he doesn’t have a gut in flame form. You’ll keep watching outside the window.

[4 HOURS LATER]

“Any moment now, partner.” Philonune remains optimistic.

“You keep saying that.” You feel like you’re travelling on a bus without actually moving.

“Well, you ignored the shooting star.” Philonune doesn’t feel guilty. The sky is relatively darker in the countryside than in the city, you can even see the stars in the sky very clearly.

“I mean, it was pretty cool.” You wished for something to happen.

“Partner, look!” Philonune points out something in the sky. Is it another shooting star?! Or is it a UFO?! Or…

“It’s coming our way…” Isn’t that dangerous…? “Hold it, that’s…!”

You know that little spaceship anywhere! That’s Naiad! Xavi’s fairy flame partner! What’s going on?! She’s flying at moderate speed towards your direction!

“The little fairy!” Philonune is excited for something to happen.

“Y-Yeah!” You don’t know why you stopped talking.

Should you go outside? You don’t think Yareli would appreciate it, like you don’t appreciate her soft but oddly inconsistent snoring…

You need to get Naiad’s attention, it’s been a while since you used it, but you can use that stupid eye flash you used that one time against Yu Yan before she was smug. You concentrate and light your eyes up. The impertinent light makes Naiad look down and spot you clearly, lowering her altitude and going directly to the house, instead of just over it but in the same direction.

Naiad manages to go through the house like a ghost and then land on the desk, you turn to her so she knows she has your attention. You wonder how her physical properties work, but she usually refuses to explain her fairy magic, so you’ll refrain from asking unnecessary questions. Naiad comes out of her ship and walks towards your hands and hugs it. How cute. Then she does a pose like it’s a mission complete!

“Can you hear me?” Philonune knows you can’t talk without waking Yareli up.

Naiad nods. Still too shy to talk directly again, she only thanked you at the end of your trip through the stars.

“My partner here can’t talk because we’re watching over that woman.” Philonune points at the snoring lady, who isn’t snoring at this moment.

Naiad nods again. She seems to get it.

“How did you find us?” Philonune is passing on the questions you want to ask.

Naiad points at your hand. You look at it and see the little fish hat on your pinky lighting up, the parting gift she gave you at the end of Dream Hill. Wait, it’s some sort of fairy tracking device?! Naiad pantomimes that she can listen to both of you in the same way you talk to each other.

“Wait, you can listen to my thoughts?” You think it’s awkward while think-saying it.

Naiad shakes her head and describes that she can only listen to what you want to relay to her.

“Is it because of the hat?” You ask again.

Naiad nods. She points at Philonune and you, meaning she can hear you both because of it, meaning that what Philonune did before was unnecessary.

“I don’t remember taking it with me though.” You look at your pinky and see the hat slowly turn invisible…

Naiad looks at you like saying that you shouldn’t sweat the details. Yep, you’re not getting all the answers you want…

“What brings you here?” You wonder.

Naiad points at you! You’re the reason she’s here!

“How did you get here, fairy?” Philonune wonders.

Naiad points at her ship. Welp, yeah, but that’s not the real question, is it…?

“One cannot be short on allies, right, partner?” Philonune is happy to welcome Naiad.

“Yeah.” You’re happy Naiad is here!

Naiad poses! Naiad has officially joined your party. Naiad wants to show you something by signaling her ship first, but then points at Yareli like an obstacle.

“It’s loud…?” You wonder.

Naiad nods. She goes to her ship anyway and takes a little device out. She moves it around like indicating she’s going to investigate the surroundings instead of staying put.

“It’s better if we wait.” You start patting Naiad’s head with your pinky. She enjoys it! “I have my own mission to accomplish.” You wink at her. Naiad totally understands you now!

Naiad starts wiggling her device to signal she’s going to be going. Now she’s prowling around like she’s a scientist doing research, taking notes and all… You look at her go…

You hear Yareli softly snoring again. This catches Naiad’s attention, she skips closer to Yareli, throws some fairy dust on her and bam…! Now Yareli sounds louder and more consistent! Oh god… You suppose that’s better for Yareli…? Her throat is going to be really sore later though.

“It feels good having our allies looking out for us, partner.” Philonune is really happy that Naiad made her way here.

“Yeah.” You didn’t think about it like that, but yeah, she went the extra mile. But that makes you wonder what everyone else is doing out there.

This is far more annoying than ever before…

You plug in the headphones in Yareli’s radio so you don’t have to listen to her snoring anymore, maybe the reason she’s so quiet all day is because her throat is ruined. You gaze through the window to watch the environment while listening to the radio. It would be comfy if it wasn’t for the chair you’re sitting on…

It appears that Naiad heard your complaint, she gets closer and throws some fairy magic dust onto the chair. It feels much better to sit on, like brand new! You smile and thank the little miracle worker, who poses in satisfaction, then resumes her work. You start playing with the radio’s handles to find a good station to listen to.

Hey, isn’t that the song you like? The one Carol had to sing to help you empower your abilities. It has another vibe than the one you remember. Did your mom used to listen to this? Doesn’t matter, you like it. Oh, it stopped, back to your regular programming…

It's just a random radio program. You hate when the host doesn’t introduce themselves. Well, now you know it’s January 12th, Thursday! Yeah, you kinda knew you were in the middle of Winter, but it isn’t that cold outside. The radio host mentions some random news, “the Phantom Thief” Houda Lan struck again and stole a Bucket. Yep. You heard that right. A bucket. Supposedly important. You barely care.

You peek outside to see if there is something more interesting than a damn bucket, and see a bunch of ducks walking around. Adorable. Much better than a Bucket.

There is much more sports news than you’re used to. Even Volleyball and Handball get coverage. You noticed that Boxing sticks out like a sore thumb as the only individual sport mentioned. Nothing important. Where is the damn music…? There you go, now you’re going to listen to a song by the Midnight Something. Why does the name sound familiar? The song is pretty good. What a boop.

The Outside World provides you quality entertainment like the clouds in the sky moving slowly… Yeah, you miss the ducks.

Oh no. The Radio show is back. Finally, he introduces himself, the host’s name is Walter Buonanotte. Breaking News. A terrible Subway accident happened in Pokyo Lokyo. In one of the outdoors sections of the railway, one 12 meters in the air right next to a street, one of the pillars supporting the structure collapsed with one of the trains on. Dozens of people lost their lives. Many are injured. This is the most catastrophic incident since the subway was built. Some people have said an explosion was the catalyst, but the police are denying that to be the case. The news will be expanded in the main news coverage at night.

The host offers his condolences, and asks people to contact their relatives if they live around that area just in case.

Another breaking news, Head of State Lazarus Don Gordon has some words to say:

“I have never felt more alive. A new era has begun. Prancijan will stand above all. Brothers and Sisters, together we move as one to new horizons. HeHEhehHEhe.”

The odd timing with both events is too difficult for the host to comprehend. Is this even a coincidence? He mutters.

The feed cuts and music starts playing again. No introduction. Nothing. As the song ends. You listen to a different radio program starting, starring a guy named Jeremy, he’s a sports guy. You already listened to the sports news. It sounds rushed. Your stomach sinks.

You don’t want to listen to this station anymore.

Yeah, you’ll change the station instead of watching TV, you don’t want to become like Nariko after all. You play with the handlers to search for one talking about the subway incident, maybe it’s connected to something that might be useful in the future, besides, you think listening to the radio is not that bad. Until the bad thing happened. But that ain't the fault of the medium, right? Anyway, you find what you were looking for in the Big Chance Station.

They have expanded on the news, dismissing the police’s report after verifying with witnesses. A distressed salary-man in his mid-thirties detonated bombs around his waist after threatening to take his own life. A couple of policemen tried to calm him down but to no avail. Witnesses paraphrased what the man was saying repeatedly before taking his own life:

“I’m tired of living in this s**t country. I can’t do this anymore. Nothing is fair. Nothing really ever changes.”

Because of the magnitude of the explosion, the pillar holding the subway rails collapsed, and this led to the subsequent incident occurring. 28 people lost their lives, and 108 were injured, 20 of them with risks of dying. Some experts say it could’ve been worse, but note that the structure shouldn’t have cracked if it was built properly.

With the overwhelming evidence against their initial report, the police corrected their statements accordingly, police lieutenant Banks had this to say:

“The policemen on site will be charged for falsifying their reports, the court of law will handle the rest. Personally, I hope we can work towards a country where these incidents don’t happen.”

The ever-popular Lokyo’s Governor Gordoninho sent his condolences to the families of the victims, and promised reparations. Pokyo Lokyo will struggle even more to overcome the adversity it continues to have after the failed insurrection from a couple of years ago, now that it will add another structure to be rebuilt to the list.

You wonder if the people mentioned here are the people you think they are…

Now the station is going back to its regular programming. It’s some type of movie reviewing show and they’re reviewing Linda Wise’s new movie; the 2 hosts are joking around about how sex appeal can give you anything but acting skills…

That’s an abrupt change.

You’re kinda hungry, it is way past time for lunch. It’s 4:22 PM.

You channel the abilities of such consummate rat people like Howie and the Rat boy you met yesterday for your next move! You’ll approach the fridge to steal some food while Philonune stays on guard for a little bit, but first you take off your headphones and lower the radio’s volume. Now it’s the moment to attack!

Oh, and Yareli is not snoring anymore, she’s having a peaceful sleep, which only adds to the tension of your next moves.

On your toes, you walk towards Yareli’s fridge to inspect its contents. You open it up and the device starts making the noise they are known for, you don’t know if the racket they emit has a name, but it has to do with the light inside them, right? Or is the cooling factor? The more you think about it, the less you care. Better to check what’s inside.

There are some yoghurts, a couple of beer cans, butter, vegetables on the bottom, some meat and leftovers. Yeah, and eggs too, of course. In the freezer, there are some frozen meals to be eaten quickly. You don’t see a microwave anywhere to cook it like your dad would. Cooking anything would make some noise, but who doesn’t want to wake up to a delicious meal? That’s what Nariko always says. She always comes up with the darndest things, what a gal.

You have options, but none of them will not have consequences you might have to deal with.

You eat a random slice of salami as you think this over…

What do you want to eat?

>Steal Cheese and claim victory. You’re a rat at this moment.
>Prepare a decent meal! You like cooking!
>Take one of the frozen meals and put it in the microwave that you’ll try to find.
>Write In.

What’s next?

>After Yareli wakes up, find Oliver at the station!
>After Yareli wakes up, have a little chat with her and eat together. Gain her trust!
>After Yareli wakes up, keep an eye on her. Your job ain’t over.
>After Yareli wakes up, look for a TV or a Radio to have for the Camper.

From hating to prepare your own breakfast to willingly cooking for others because you genuinely enjoy it! If that’s not really a character arc you don’t know what it is. Well, you don’t exactly enjoy cooking for the sake of it, but you’ve been cooking for long enough now that you feel like it’s a waste if you don't do it.

That’s a long tangent just to decide what ingredients to pick from the humble selections of items at your disposal. Yareli has enough stuff to have a balanced diet, but not a healthy one, like every household. You sound like your Mom, you should stop it. It’s a strange middle ground that doesn’t allow you to have many choices. You grab what you need and look inside the kitchen for cookware. You’re making lunch for two, even if it’s late for that…

It's almost ready…

“You’re still here…” Yareli has woken up. Hooray. It’s almost 5 PM, she slept for like 7 hours almost on the clock… “You’re cooking?”

“Yeah, I hope you don’t mind that I'm using your stuff.” You sound apologetic.

“It was irresponsible of me to let you stay in this place first and foremost.” Yareli uses her bed sheet to cover most of her body. “I was too tired to make the proper effort. So we’re even.”

“I-I guess…” You didn’t want to be kicked out, you wanted to make sure she was okay. Naiad climbs to your shoulder, you think she turned her spaceship into a backpack. It doesn’t appear that Yareli is able to see her.

“Any responsible adult wouldn’t have agreed to let you stay here. You must be thinking ill of me, but I assure you I’m trustworthy. It won’t happen again.” The emotionless policewoman laments.

“Do you think I would dislike a person I prepared food for?” You wiggle your eyebrows.

Yes.” Yareli doesn’t hesitate.

“W-Well, you’re wrong!” The most important ingredient for a homely meal is care! Probably Nariko’s favorite ingredient! So much that she’s retaining too much of it, but she carries her care well. You think. It’s not your fault she eats that much… It’s just that in hindsight you realize she might have overdone it a little. But she’s not your cat, you’re not supposed to watch over how much she eats! It’s all Nariko’s fault! “Just take it as my apology for acting so strange, being a knucklehead and all.”

“Don’t talk yourself down, you’re not defined by your blunders.” Yareli shakes her head. She’s too strange of a person for you to nail down what exactly her deal is. Is she nice? Cold? Caring? Crazy? Why does she go along with all your weird stuff? Who knows...

“If you say so. All I can say is, this meal isn’t one of them.” You smile. Yareli stares at you coldly. Or normally.

“Very well…” Yareli grabs her sleeping robe…

Lunch time!

“So where are the plates? Huh, where are we going to eat?” You wonder as you realize she doesn’t have a table. You think you saw some plates in one of the drawers.

“I eat at my desk.” Yareli puts her robe on and stands up.

“What happens when you have visitors?” You imagine someone had to come by.

“…” Yareli just stares at you.

“You don’t get guests?” You’re not sure you should’ve asked that question.

“We eat outside.” Yareli took too long to respond!

“What about Kobashi, has he—”

Of course not.” Yareli denies it without hesitation, interrupting you in the process. “You’re the first one to intrude in my home.”

“S-Sorry.”

“I didn’t mean to use the word intrude.” Yareli tries to sound apologetic. You think. She invited you in, didn’t she?

“Do you have a thing where I can sit?” You scratch the back of your head.

“I have a folding chair.” Yareli goes into her wardrobe and takes the promised item out. She puts it right next to the uncomfortable one you were using before. Makes sense, there isn’t much space with the TV and the Radio on it.

“Next to each other?” You raise an eyebrow as you bring the other stuff.

“…” Yareli moves her folding chair to the head of the desk. Or side. Or whatever it should be called in these circumstances…

“I wasn’t complaining.” You shrug.

“Apologies then.” Yareli doesn’t retract her action though. She’s about to sit on her folding chair.

“Wait, I’ll sit there.” You’ll take the seemingly more uncomfortable seat. “I’ll take it, I’m the guest after all, sleepyhead.”

“…” Upon hearing those words, Yareli walks into her bathroom…

“The food will get cold…” You mutter to yourself as you prepare the desk. You had to move the radio and TV to the side to make this thing act as a normal dinner table. You serve both plates, put some milk in Yareli’s glass, and some water in yours. And wait for her…

“Sorry for the wait.” Yareli has her normal hairstyle back! You liked the messy hair though... She takes her place on the table. “Looks lovely.”

“I hope it tastes lovely too. Enjoy the food.” You smile as you grab your fork. Yareli does the same…

You did fine, it could’ve been better. After the initial tasting, you think it’s an appropriate moment to chat.

“I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary by the way.” You report nothing happening.

“You take all your self-imposed jobs seriously, I see.” Is Yareli appreciating your food? “It’s good to hear, I suppose. You can take a rest; I’ll be the one watching over you now.”

“Wait, I lied!” You forgot something. Yareli tenses up! “I saw a couple of ducks. They were cute!”

“…I forgot to feed them.” Yareli feels bad now, at least, you assume. “But that’s not newsworthy.”
>>

“Yeah, I suppose…” You think they were really damn cute. And you appreciate cute things like Ducks, Yareli, and the silly face both Nariko and Chio make after eating your food. Makes you want to pinch their cheeks.

“So, about the box…” You think it’s time to get serious now that the meal is close to being over.

“Thanks to your efforts, I’m well rested. I’ll deal with it on my own.” Yareli never plays the good cop.

“Are we doing this again…?” Unlike Nariko, you don’t want seconds after a complete meal.

“I want you to promise that you’ll keep this confidential.” Wait, Yareli is allowing you to help her?! Hooray!

“I’ll pinky promise if I have to.” You raise your finger. Just like you did it with Ruby!

“…” Yareli hesitates to decide if she’ll raise her hand or not. “That won’t be necessary.” What a bummer. You like doing silly stuff. “Let me finish my meal first.”

“Sure. I’ll look for the box.” You stand up and look around for it. She left it beside the drawer next to her bed. You bring it to the table. “Here.”

“Thank you for the meal, it was as lovely as its scent. You’re talented.” Yareli tries to sound or look grateful. Doesn’t work. But you appreciate it.

“I can cook for you anytime you want.” You nicely say. “Anyway, let’s look into this.”

“Allow me to dig in first.” Yareli takes the box from your hands. These are personal subjects for her, so you’ll allow her to do whatever she feels like. “Uhm…” Yareli is carefully examining the objects.

“Is this the first time you received something like this?” You ask as you take the dishes to clean them.

“The first package. I’ve received cryptic phone calls, threatening messages on my doorstep and heard people shouting expletives outside at random times.” Yareli is clueing you in to every aspect. Yareli takes the pictures out of the box and puts them on the desk. You return to your chair after cleaning both plates. “These pictures were part of my photo album that was stolen when my house was ransacked.”

“I see.” You look at them again for the sake of it. These people are important to Yareli. “What about the tape?”

“My best guess is that it’s from the perpetrator. My personal collection wasn’t stolen.” Yareli has a music collection? Maybe it’s in the desk’s drawers. You wonder what music she listens to. “And this doll… I don’t know what it is.”

“It’s a voodoo doll.” You don’t know if they are common or not in this time period.

“Yes. I noticed.” Yareli looks at it intensively. “But of whom?”

“You.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you.”

“Are you positive?” Yareli STILL has her doubts.

“Yes. Can’t you tell how cute she is?” You raise an eyebrow. It’s strange calling a voodoo doll of all things cute, but little Yareli has a little police badge! How can you not say it’s adorable? Even Naiad agrees!

“…” Yareli stares at you intensely.

“W-Whoops, sorry, wrong crowd. Hehe…” You need to stop doing that. You’re so awkward…

You need to say something to dispel the awkwardness.

“Let’s listen to the tape, maybe it has something important.” You propose.

“Most likely…” Yareli is hesitant to listen for fear of what it might have in it. You assume anyway. Anytime she freezes is for a good reason.

“By the way…” You take the voodoo doll out. “Have you felt weird or tended to get hurt anytime recently where the needles on the voodoo are located?”

“I don’t believe so, no.” Yareli is convinced that is not the case. Maybe it works differently? “My eyes are fine, for example.” She points at the voodoo to show it has something on there.

“Right, just wondering.” You don’t know how to feel. Those kids know flame magic after all, or something like that.

Yareli takes the headphones off the radio, and puts the cassette tape inside. You waited for her to do it because you don’t know how…

“Are you ready?” Yareli has her finger on the play button. You nod, and the two of you attentively stare at the radio…

“Ivanov, Ivanov, Ivanov is back.” You hear a chorus of children talk in unison, not perfectly, but workable enough to not have any issues understanding what they are saying. “The silent angel must leave the realm of mortals, or the sinner will have to endure agony until his end. Her silence is fake unless she ties it around the neck. One whisper and it is over, one whisper means his death. If the angel chooses to escape her fortune, those in the pictures will be next. If the angel wants to stay, to save the sinner for what she made him say, five labours she has to go through, because in hell she has to pay.”

…Both you and Yareli remain silent since the tape hasn’t stopped yet.

“To go through the labours, please remove one of the pins from the angel. We will know if you accept. You have a week to start or you’ll have to stay silent. Take your time.” A distorted voice says, and the background noise ends. That’s all for the tape. Yareli turns the radio off.

“…” Yareli walks towards the drawer next to her bed, opens it and takes a bottle of pills out. She takes one and swallows it without water. “My anti-depressants…” She clarifies.

“Here.” You hand Yareli a glass of water. You grabbed one while she was doing all of that… It was for yourself, but oh well.

“Thanks…” Yareli doesn’t know what to do.

Yeah, this issue might be bigger than you thought.

Somebody of hers is hostage. She has to kill herself or the hostage will be tortured until they die. If she spills anything, they kill him when they find out. If she tries to escape all this, they'll go for the people in the photos next. If she wants to live and save the hostage, she has to go through with the things the perpetrators want from her.
And this all started when? With her collected evidence against the Orphanage?

…Or maybe it is as big as you thought! You’re going out of your way to deal with this after all. But to understand the severity of this case, it’s important that you don’t jump to conclusions and ask all the details.

“Tell me now what you think this is. Be completely honest.” You need to be on the same wavelength.

“I need you to promise… No… I expect you to give me 48 hours if you choose to leave after listening to my explanation. Kobashi is the only man you can trust in the force, and he can’t take this task on his own. If you divulge to someone else, you’ll become a target as well. Whether you believe me about the risks is up to you, but don’t pretend later you weren’t warned.” Yareli prefaces her explanation with a big disclaimer.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to overlook this.” You shrug. Yareli might not believe in gut feelings, but you’re sure she’s not a bad girl.

“Are you putting the burden on me? That relaying this information to you is the same as condemning you?” Yareli doesn’t want the blame.

“You should know by now that I’m the one who chooses to be this stupid.” You adjust your glasses.

“…Very well. But I ask you again to stop disparaging yourself.” Yareli takes a deep breath. “Now allow me to explain…”

Yareli reveals in a few words how she misled you a bit a couple of hours ago. During one of her investigations on the Orphanage of the Blue, she ended up sneaking around the main building, and was found out by one of the kids. It was a major coincidence, he was sick that day and he needed some air and opened the window. Yareli managed to convince him to not blow the whistle on her to his caretakers.

During the next row of weeks, she kept infiltrating the place and being caught by the same kid, over and over again, becoming friendly to each other since the kid saw it as a game. The kids were taught to trust the police force. She purposely tried to be found out by him and only him, so she had an excuse to talk, as she found it suspicious that the kid has been sick for so long, and maybe he could clue her in about what was happening inside. It took many tries before the kid opened up about his problems.

When Yareli learned about how the kid was being mistreated by his caretakers, all for the sole purpose of incentivizing his potential for some magic ability, she decided she couldn’t let the kid stay there and kidnapped him. She took him home, and promised him she’ll deal with all of this, help his friends, and find a way. He became Yareli’s main key to solving the case.

That same night, her house was ransacked, and the kid was stolen back… She remembered holding him tight before going to sleep, but now he was all gone when she woke up… The kid’s name is Ivanov.
>>
>>4960905

Yareli went back to find him at the orphanage, but there was no trace of him even existing. None of the kids knew him, not even Sieb knew what she was talking about. And Ophelia played dumb. That’s how it all really began for Yareli…

She believes the message is telling her to kill herself or go through the challenges attached to the voodoo doll to save Ivanov. If she tries to escape or tell anyone, they’ll kill him, and if she doesn’t care, they’ll kill someone she does care about.

“Any questions?” Yareli made it sound like a briefing more than a sad tale.

“Why didn’t you tell Kobashi? Or anyone else for that matter?” You wonder. Now you understand why you had that hunch before…

“He would’ve felt betrayed. We worked on this together and I left him in the dark about Ivanov. Now the kid is in great peril because of my actions.” Yareli doesn’t have anything else to hide.

“Why didn’t you tell him?”

“I promised it to Ivanov. His caretakers said the only policeman he couldn't trust was Kobashi.” Yareli is not lying. “…And I was afraid of being hated.” Yareli closes her eyes. “I only need 48 hours. After that, feel free to tell Kobashi, your friends, the newspaper, whoever you feel like. I just need one chance.”

You didn’t expect this amount of sincerity…

What do you do?

Feelin' real sus. If Ophelia's competent she might've essentially planted this suspeciously osgood-esque kid from the start in order to get a pathway to Kobashi through Yareli.

Before all this, let's squish that voodoo doll a bit and see if there's a microphone in there or something.

“Hold on…” You squish the doll to check if there is something in it without messing with the pins. Nope, just softness, like Nina. “Ehem, you’re not doing anything silly. We’re going to bust that orphanage together.” If they want hell, you’ll bring it to them!

“Together?” Yareli is so dumbfounded she looks exactly the same as always.

“Well, I have a couple of allies who will be willing to help too if you catch my drift.” You adjust your glasses.

No.” Yareli refuses your help.

“Stop sounding like a broken record.” You point at her, and if she doesn’t stop, you’ll boop her nose. “That orphanage must go down.”

“Why did you squish the doll?” Yareli wants to make sure why you did that before agreeing to do anything.

Don’t say it’s because you like squishing cute girls, it’s not the time for silly answers. “I thought it might have a recorder or something.” Good job.

“You’re inconsistently cautious.” Yareli points out. What does that mean?

“I’m not always on guard…” You shrug. “Now, I always planned to take care of that place anyway, with or without your help. So, why go to the trouble of going our own separate ways when we have the same objective? Just think about it like that if you’re not convinced.”

“I understand, but…” Yareli isn’t that sure. “If you tell Kobashi, I…” Yareli shakes her head. “He’ll know I didn’t inform him because I was taking advantage of the kid to gather more clues. To help with his reputation if we solve it.”

“Well, there is the possibility that Ophelia might have planted this kid from the start in order to get a pathway to Kobashi through you. She looks like the conniving type, and from what I know, she’s THAT cruel.” You theorize. “But if you think you made a real connection with this kid, I’m not going to argue with that.”

“…” Yareli closes her eyes, she’s in deep thought. “I suppose I can’t discard the possibility…”

“He’s just a kid, Yareli. He still needs our help.” You can tell Yareli doesn’t want to think that’s possible.

“I didn’t imply I wasn’t going to.” Yareli clarifies.

“It’s not like you’ve accepted working together.” You point out.

“If you’re comfortable with my aid.” The cop accepts.

“Why would I ask you to work together if I wasn’t?” You scratch the back of your head.

“Politeness.” Yareli is an odd woman.

“T-That’s not how it works.” You don’t know how to respond to this.

A yes is a yes… You can all work together to tear down the New Cult! Technically it’s the Old Cult. The Old New Cult? Just call it the Orphanage…

Well, tearing down an Orphanage doesn’t sound like something a good guy would do, so maybe you should go over this...

What do you do?

“Well, Yareli, Oliver is most likely waiting for me in front of the station. He was spying on Seib in the meantime while I was watching over you.” As soon as those words came out of your mouth, you wondered if it was a good idea to say that to a cop.

“Please don’t flaunt about doing illegal activities in front of me.” Of course, Yareli doesn’t like it.

“I didn’t do anything, it was Oliver.” You deflect. “Hold on, didn’t you infiltrate the orphanage? What’s the difference?”

“…” Yareli is a hypocrite! Hypocrite!

“Nothing to say now, huh?” You raise an eyebrow.

“I understand my duplicity and I’ll work to rectify it.” Yareli just admits her guilt.

“D-Don’t take it seriously.” You scratch your cheek.

“You’re a big jokester.” Yareli keeps staring at you. This is not something you like for someone who doesn’t laugh to point out.

“C’mon, we need to go, this place ain’t safe with the orphanage having an eye on it.” Enough time wasting!

“I’m in my sleepwear and you’re aware that I find it embarrassing to wear outside.” Yareli reminds you.

“But it’s fine with me?” You’re confused. “I’m not complaining though.”

“…You make the most inopportune observations.” Yareli didn’t like that. “I need to prepare. Please watch over the house while I’m busy.” Yareli walks to her wardrobe and takes some clothes out.

You don’t have to worry about being vigilant because Philonune is guarding!

“Partner, I enjoy these ducks. They’re an entertaining species.” Philonune is enjoying his time looking through the window. On your shoulder still, Naiad indicates to you she’s ready to leave too with a pose. Great!

Yareli makes you wait for a couple of minutes preparing in the bathroom, she’s taking a shower and all. Once she steps out of there, she’s completely ready to go!

“Looking good.” You nod.

“…” Yareli refuses to respond again. She’s wearing not-so casual clothes. “Shall we go?”

“Yeah.” You nod, and off you go! Yareli puts some stuff inside a backpack just in case, including the package, and trails behind you.

Finally, you left her house. You’re going to miss it. Naiad takes her device out once again and starts studying something! You have no clue what she’s exactly doing, but soon you’ll know!

“I have no shift tonight.” Yareli’s schedule is open. Maybe that’s the reason she was so insistent on having 48 hours to do whatever she wanted to do on her own to stop the orphanage cult.

“I don’t think we can pull this off immediately, but we’ll see.” Perhaps you already have everything you need, you just need to gather everyone around.

Back at the Police Station, you see no one outside, a red flag. You decided to look around just in case.

“Kobashi is not inside either, but nothing seems out of the ordinary.” Yareli steps out of the station. “Doesn’t surprise me, he doesn’t spend much time at his desk. Also, nobody saw Leo, and in my opinion, he was tired of waiting for you and left, he’s an impatient man.”

“I don’t think so. Something must be off or… he found something.” You know this is a possibility. The plan was for him to follow Seib until it felt pointless.

“Any ideas then?” Yareli wants to know what the next step is.

What do you do?

>Yareli has been investigating the Orphanage, right? Ask her to lead you to the place Seib usually frequents. Maybe Oliver is there.
>You can wait for him here. That’s, like, the plan, y’know?

Even if Oliver did find something there's no point chasing his tail, nor is there a point in pursuing him where ever he might've wandered off to. There's a chance he might've gotten arrested again and that's why Kobashi's out, and an equal chance Matilda or someone came by already and picked him up. I think the best move now is to go back to the camper and plot the downfall of the orphanage with our allies. Whenever we move to execute our plan we can go by the police station again, if he's still not around at that point THEN we can worry.
>>

Do you want to get the others involved in this, knowing they might be targeted and become hostages or worse, just like this Ivanov was to Yareli? We still don't know how this bubble pocket dimension relates to the real world, nor how to get out. We should handle this Orphanage deal and THEN try to get out asap however it works. Naiad should have an out planned by then. I wonder what the real way out would have been, if we didn't do anything to befriend Xavi or just beat him up like a random mook back during our stealth ops.

I'm comfortable getting them involved since we're going on the attack, yes. Our deck is pretty well stacked at the moment, and I don't think the Orphanage will be expecting to be hit with what we can bring to bear. That goes double if we plan carefully.

Meanwhile if we just go after Oliver now we entirely risk tipping our hand.

Although there IS something suspicious about Sieb aside from his involvement with the cult. He couldn't possibly not see what's being done to the children at some point, but they all trust him. He seems genuinely nice and acts almost suspiciously innocent by all accounts as well. Of course, that might all be explained if perhaps Ophelia (or one of the children thoroughly under her thumb) has some sort of memory manipulation ability. The only thing I can be sure of right now is that there's something about him and the situation at the orphanage that doesn't add up. He seems more like a fall guy than someone so deeply evil they could put a convincing facade on despite having a hand in making the kids as miserable as they are.

“What places does Sieb usually visit?” You ask Yareli since she has been on the Orphanage’s tail for a while. Oliver is most likely still spying on him.

“You want to find him through Sieb?” Yareli wants your confirmation.

“Eyup.” You nod. “Better check up on him than feel sorry later.” Too much time has passed for you to be comfortable focusing on something else.

“Seib frequents the Garden shop, follow me to the Marketplace.” Yareli leads the way. You obviously trail behind!

The Marketplace is at the town’s Shopping District (how shocking), there are people walking around but since it’s midweek, it’s not especially congested. Despite that, finding the Garden Shop was difficult because a lot of the street sellers wanted your attention, some more forcibly than others. They don’t know they are wasting their time, you don’t have a cent to your name here! You got some free samples, like delicious cheese.

Anyway, you’re outside the Garden Shop, unlike most of the shops, this one is inside a building, you can see what’s inside through the windows. You don’t see Seib, but the place is big enough that you can miss him.

“Stay here, I’ll check inside. It’s less suspicious if I go on my own.” Yareli has decided to tackle this on her own.

What do you do?

>Agree and stay outside.
>Agree, wait for her to be gone, turn invisible, then go inside as well.

You nod and let Yareli go her merry way, or just her way, she never looks happy. Yes, you accept, but you’re not leaving her on her own! You’re going to turn invisible and accompany her on this difficult mission. Now, you need to make sure no one sees you using your ability, so you’ll have to find a secret spot to hide briefly, like some super hero… Ugh, that’s Scarlet’s influence creeping in, well, as long as it isn’t about ice cream, you think you’ll be fine. Time to find a corner or an alley, or something…

Yeah, you think you found a good spot! Hooray! There is only one problem…

“…” There is a little girl with glasses staring at you, like in awe or plainly dumbfounded. You feel like it’s more of the latter.

“How can I help you?” You don’t know if you did something.

“Y-You look cool! Are you a movie star?” The little girl gets all embarrassed.

You? A movie star? You’re more like a background character. Anyway…

“Thank you. Is your mom somewhere around?” You smile. You don’t want to be a dick to a little child, you’re not a monster like Amelia.

“Mhm…” The little girl puts her hands behind her back, and points towards a certain direction with her chin. Good, you don’t want to meet another orphan. Not that you hate them, it’s just too sad.

Anyway, the girl points at one Greengrocer stall where a busy woman is selling some fruits to an old man.

“But are you one?” The girl insists.

“Sorry, I’m not. But I’m flattered that you asked.” You continue being a good big brother like you always were with Amelia, and the little dummy never truly appreciate because she didn’t even fucking hesitate to steal your cookies.

“Y-You’re not famous?” The girl can’t believe it. Well, you did hear on the radio that good looks don’t give good acting chops…

“You think someone famous would wear this?” You flap your hoodie wings.

“Why not?” This little girl has great taste.

“Oh, sweetie! W-What are you doing?” The girl’s mom finally shows up here, it was the same lady who was working at the stall. For a second there, you thought you heard your mom…

“Mommy…” The child doesn’t seem happy to be interrupted.

“Dearie me, what’s gotten into you? You’ve never approached a stranger before!” The mother grabs her child’s hand. “You need to be careful with strangers, and…” The mother raises her head and gives you a good look. “Oh goodness.

“Yeah, I know, hoodie is weird.” You flap your hoodie wings again.

“W-Was my kid bothering you? I-I sincerely apologize if that’s the case!” The mother changes her tune a little.

“It’s all good, she wasn’t bothering me.” You nod to yourself.

“Nonsense! This apology is nothing! C’mere, I’ll make it up for you.” The mother grabs your forearm and starts dragging you to her stall. The little girl happily skips next to you.

What’s going on?

What do you do?

“Okay!” You accept being dragged by this nice stranger because of free stuff! Who doesn’t love free stuff? Like, actual free stuff… not like your cookies. Those were yours. But Amelia didn’t feel like that, did she? You need to let this go, revenge can’t consume your life…

But what you can actually consume are these tasty fruits you’re being gifted! They look good, but you don’t deserve them if you’re honest with yourself. Though Annette (Mother) is adamant about giving them to you, she has been stumbling on her words and acting all nervous, unlike her daughter Iris, who seems to continue treating you like you’re an extravagant zoo animal. Annette’s attitude makes you feel like you’re some mafia guy who they need to earn the respect of again after screwing up or else you’ll do something awful. Anyway, you introduce yourself to them as Phil and you have tried to not take advantage of the situation.

“You new around these parts? Don’t answer me! It’s pretty obvious! You undisputedly are! With that style, the hair, your presence… You’re like a TV star but in reality! Or a famous singer, like you’re part of the Midnight Effect! Soooo good-looking and everything, it’s impossible that you’ve gone unnoticed around town. Literally impossible. You’ll be surprised by how quickly the word spreads here in Xumenlo, it’s like fwooosh! But take it easy, your friend Annette is not going to open her mouth. Like swoop! Closed! Mhm! Mhm! You can trust me with everything! I can feel we’re already bonding, yeah! Take them as a welcoming gift from your new friend, hehe! I’m not kidding, you can rely on me, I’m going to put my phone number in the paper bag, you see?” Annette shows you a piece of paper with her number on it as she smiles. She’s so nervous she doesn’t stop talking! It’s like listening to Grace and Mirjam talking at the same time! You really want to tell her you don’t want to assault her or something so she can relax... “There! Woop! Right inside. If you need to buy anything here at the marketplace, I’ll find it for you. Give me your grocery store, and it’ll be done. Yeah, why bother coming over if I can deliver it? Makes sense, right? Just trust me! It’s terrific we’re welcoming new people in town, it’s been a while, we need it. Xumenlo needs more youth. I’m young, early 20s and all, so why am I talking like I’m senile or something? Anyway I’ll make your stay as enjoyable as I can. Mhm. And if you want to settle down…” Annette gives you a playful look. “Hehe, just kidding! I’m not that jokey of a person! Is jokey a word they use elsewhere? I don’t feel like it is, I never heard it on the TV. I love watching TV, it’s so different from what we have here. I’m not much of a Radio gal. I try to listen to the local station, but nothing ever happens, y’know? It’s not very exciting and—”

“Mom, you’re embarrassing us…” Iris has been pulling Annette’s apron to get her attention for a while now. She looks frustrated at how much her mother is talking non-stop…

“I-Iris, w-what’s gotten into you today?” Annette is taken aback, but ends up patting her child’s head. “Are you feeling left out?” Annette smiles and so does Iris. “Well, Phil, tell me, do you have a girlfriend?”

Wait, you thought this was over!

How do you respond?

>“I do.” Lie.
>“I don’t.” Lie. No wait, it’s the truth.

“Uh, I need to get going, I’ll call you if I need you.” You don’t want to be ungrateful or impolite, but you have Yareli waiting for help, even though she doesn’t know it!

“Aw, don’t be embarrassed to admit you don’t have one. It’s perfectly normal, I haven’t dated in a while. Good-looking or not, you need to find the one, right?” Annette wants to keep the conversation going.

“I don’t mean to be rude, but you caught me in the middle of something.” You step back to signal you must go. “I’ll come by later when I have more time to chat!”

“H-Hold on! A quick hug before you go!” Annette bends forward over her stall for a hug. “P-People here like to greet like this!”

“Oh, all right!” You give her a quick hug!

“Good bye, Phil!” Iris goes around the stall to give you a proper hug. You hug her back. What a good girl.

“I’ll see you later!” D’aw, you like hugs, but you need to go.

“Take care!” Annette smiles.

You leave the Fruit Stall behind, and try to find a sweet spot to hide to make yourself invisible! The alleyway you were first in won’t do because it’s in view of the stall and they will probably see you. You think you find a good spot near a couple trash containers! But…

“E-Excuse me, sir. Are you a special secret agent?” It’s… another woman! She politely asks you a question. “You were working alongside officer Yareli, weren’t you? I-I can help you if you need.”

W-Why is everyone pestering you now? Kinda feels bad when they’re being so polite to tell them off but…

“Miss, I came here to shop.” You show this nice lady your paper bag full of excellent fruity goodness. You didn’t think that aside from being healthy and delicious, they would be a good cover!

“Then I have some fantastic dairy products I’m dying to offer you!” The happy saleswoman changes the tone of the conversation with ease. You have all the dairy products you need with Nariko…

“T-That’s fine, I bought what I wanted, I don’t have any money.” You come up with another excuse.

“Well, I have some delicious samples I can give you! Who knows? Maybe the samples are going to be bigger than usual.” The Cheese woman wiggles her eyebrows. Hey, she’s stealing your moves! You respect that.

“I-I don’t want to take advantage of your kindness.” You’re a nice guy after all!

“Don’t be silly! If you fall in love with our products, you’ll come back for more! I saw our sample doing god’s work before, you have a wonderful smile, but you need more than a kiss to fall for someone.” The Cheese woman has a conniving smile. “Sure!” Free Cheese! You love free cheese! You’re still channeling the energy of other rat people still, so you just can’t deny it. It’s Rat law. “Let’s get some of that.” You let her drag you along.

“You’re not going to regret it!” Cheese lady is really glad you made this decision. To her market stall you go…

You’re sitting on a cromulent crate behind the dairy stall, where the vendors usually stand, the forbidden zone for customers like you. Cheese Lady asked you to wait here while she’s going around cutting random cheese blocks to have the widest selection on her sample plate for you. Cheese lady is shaking her hips with excitement as she walks around, she seems to be in a good mood…

Chan-ta-daaah! It’s ready~!” Cheesy lady turns around with a plate full of little cubes of yellow (and whiteish?) goodness with toothpicks in all of them. You clap a little. “Before we begin, I didn’t catch your name…”

“It’s Phil.” You inform her. “What’s yours?”

“Pascaline! Can you say it?” Cheese lady Pascaline titters.

“Pascaline…?” You don’t get why you need to repeat it immediately.

“Now with more confidence!” Cheese lady is getting excited!

“Pascaline.” You try to go along with her!

“The way you said it was so… manly.” Pascaline puts her free hand above her chest. “Your effort earned some cheese! Here!” She’s trying to feed you some! “Say, aaahh…

How do you respond?

Aaah!” You happily open your mouth to receive delicious cheese! Pascaline delicately inserts your treat inside your mouth. It’s really good! Rat Ando is happy!

“How was it?” Pascaline already knows the answer since you’re probably smiling from the enjoyment.

“It’s pretty good!” You answer.

“It’s Colby cheese! I’ll keep that in mind for you!” Pascaline couldn’t be happier with your reaction! “Now, next, please say Aaah!”

Aaah!” You open your cheese dispenser.

“Such a handsome obedient gentleman! Here!” The Cheese lady gives you another cube. You eat it! “It’s Monterrey jack!”

“Great!” You say as you swallow the tortured pieces inside your mouth.

“Herrgardsost!” The Cheese Goddess inserts another piece!

“Hey! Pascaline! I wanna buy!” A random client shows up in front of the stall to interrupt the cheese galore.

“Wait here, Phil…” Pascaline whispers in your ear as she leaves the plate on your lap, then walks forward and leaves you dry. She bends forward to grab a cheese in the stall, and she starts shaking her body. Her, err, posterior is facing you. If you didn’t know better, you would think she’s doing it on purpose.

What do you do?

>Eat the remaining cheese on the plate.
>Leave the plate on the crate and walk away, tell Pascaline you’re busy.
>Well, keep on waiting!
>Write In.

Thank her for the cheese but we gotta go

Yeah, let her know we can't slack off too long. We've got secret agent stuff to tend to, like she deduced earlier.

Apologise and tell her we're busy, but we might be back later for more delicious cheeses.

You leave the plate with all the magnificent cheese on the crate and approach Pascaline.

“I need to go, Pascaline. I’m a little busy.” You sound apologetic.

“W-Wait, I’m almost done here…!” Pascaline starts panicking.

“It was a lovely time, I enjoyed it.” You hug her before leaving because it’s a Xumenlo tradition! You don’t want to appear rude.

“Phil…!” Pascaline almost swoons from your hug. Good thing you’re holding her. “Will I ever see you again?”

“You should be more confident about your cheese, my Cheese Goddess.” You adjust your glasses… Why did you say that?

“Cheese Goddess…?” Pascaline doesn’t know how to feel. “Tell me, did you fall in love with our produ—?”

EHEM! I’m not done with my order, Pascaline.” The client interrupts whatever the hell this is.

“Oh, sorry!” Pascaline turns around to her followers.

“Good bye.” It’s time to part ways.

“Take this, Phil…” Pascaline puts a random Cheese Block inside your grocery bag. “And take care.”

You wink and walk away. Leaving her to her job, because you have to do your own…!

Now you really need to find a spot where you can turn invisible! Because you don’t want things to go out of control anymore! There can’t be another vendor interested in aggressively selling you stuff, right?

Right…?

Sadly this is all we have for this thread! Thanks for playing and see you next time!

Should we start laying out plan Crash-The-Orphanage in broad strokes? I've got a few ideas, but first I think we should get our priorities straight. If we don't know what we're trying to accomplish we can't possibly come up with a plan to achieve it.

>1) Rescue of anyone in immediate danger
Ivanov (if that's his real name) falls under here, and so does Oliver if he's been captured though he's a lower priority by virtue of having the means to defend himself.
>2) Acquire evidence of the Orphanage's cult activities
This is more specific than evidence of their wrongdoings, as Yareli has already gathered that sort of evidence and it got buried and she was retaliated against. We need something sensational so that the public will be motivated to see the institution brought to justice rather than relying on the mechanisms of a corrupt state to execute their function.
>3) Incriminating evidence for Ophelia specifically
I'd like to again bring up my concern that Sieb feels like a fall guy to me based on what we know so far. I might be wrong, we might find more info on him, but my concern is that even if the orphanage is brought down Ophelia will weasel her way out of it unless we specifically target her.

As I was writing this out it actually occurred to me that in the real world's timeline the cop that busted the orphanage and the orphans themselves were retaliated against afterwards. Perhaps we should shift our focus from 'bringing the orphanage down' to 'bringing public outrage down on the corrupt government and Ophelia' specifically while trying to preserve the orphanage as an institution. If Sieb is actually a decent guy then having him run the orphanage would not be a bad thing, and it would be difficult to retaliate against the orphanage and the children if we try to build a case that specifically points the finger at corrupt government officials, and the cult the built in the orphanage through their agegnt Ophelia Bruun. This would also be a sort of growth for Johnny, worrying about the actual consequences of his heroics rather than just doing heroic things that might lead to tragedies later.

Why do I get the feeling Sieb might be an alternate Johnny
>>

I had a strange hunch about that too when we first met him. He's got suspiciously similar hair style and even our exact same glasses. Glad it wasn't just me.
>>

This is weird, like Johnny is Harem Protag dense and it attracts members like a black hole, but the coincidence that this happens when we separate from Yareli is weird. Especially when it's one after the other, is the effect of the Orphanage using Flame powers?

>Oh no, he's trying to help our pawn escape from the trap
>well he's a young man, just bombard him with pretty women and he'll get distracted quickly enough
Fairly plausible, really.

Sorry, everyone, there won't be a thread this weekend either. Just too tired and lazy to do it this week.

Here have some, ugh, Nina.

Also, I've been keeping up with the discussion here, and it's neat!
