/qst/ - Quests

Gaol Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

For your various (alleged) crimes against the Eternal Empire, the High Magistrate had sentenced you to life, and thrown you into the Gongalla Gaol: the pit of despair, the mistake of architecture and magic, the continent-sized holding facility. Thankfully, as per the required humanoid decency act, you are issued your mandatory spoon... for what good it does.

Previous threads:

You are James Calaca, a revolutionary troublemaker who the Eternal Empire had graciously thrown into Gongalla Gaol. Not that's going to stop you from trying to escape. A lot had happened since you entered Gongalla, namely new friends by the name of Petunia Karachova and Gobson G. Gobson. Your long-term goal is escape, and help redeem Petunia - maybe romance her too. Currently, you are stuck in a closet with Pedro, one of Petunia's former victims, while an unknown motile doll blocks the entrance, who apparently knows him. You are stuck in this situation because you wanted to recover the Necrologue that Pedro stole before the strange nuns from Crossbones do.
>>
>>4950509
The doll is standing motionless after saying Pedro's got her broom, to the point that you find it kinda creepy. So you motion for Pedro to speak, while you poke the broom out a bit.
"Uh, I don't know who you are, lady, but here's your broom..." Pedro gets the idea.
The dummy replied. "Oh, you do? Thank you, I need it to clean my name."
>>
>>4950520
Before you can ask it... her... to elaborate further, the dummy turns around and yells outside. "Hey, you were right, there is a Pedro inside! Now return my moniker at once!"
Ah crap.

>>4950526
>>4950538
This fella gets the idea. If this is a prison, then there's hopefully a lock on the door.
I feel a bit bad for the crash-dummy since she's obviously been tricked herself, but whatever. Not our problem. Kick her out, slam the door, lock it if possible, and bolt for the ceiling.

And a swift kick solves that problem. Just before you shut the door, however, you saw the peeping duo from before. The imp is yelling demonic towards the muscle, as if she lost a bet. The scene had barely enough time to register before you slam the door shut, and stuck the janitor's bucket handle under the door's push bar. You quickly lob Pedro up through the ceiling entrance before you yourself ascend its rope.
>>
>>4951249
Above, it's... actually kind of comfortable. Cozy, even. There's even a desk and a wardrobe, not to mention other storage furniture scattered in the cave. Any one of them could contain the Necrologue, or maybe none at all.
"Hey, can you untie me, please? I'd like to get a change of pants." Pedro asks.

First things first, Pedro...

After that, grab the relic and anything useful (stalactite club, maybe?), then book it.
>>
>>4951253
>□ Untie Pedro
>□ Look for the Necrologue relic
>Pull the ropes up to hinder pursuers further

Make sure that kid knows that if he tries to run off, we will make his days on the frontlines and scrambling through the forests seem like fond memories.

We gotta find that thing quick. It's a matter of time before those dunces find a ladder or stack some furniture or something. I wish we had a gun. That would solve a lot of our problems.
>>
>>4951288
>>4951300
>>4951450
You pull up the rope to give your pursuers hindrance. "I don't see why not. Promise to be a good boy, yeah? Where's the Necrologue?" You start to untie his cape.
"I will. It's inside the top chest there." Once untied (and butt naked), Pedro quckly grabs a short from the wardrobe and dons it on as you open the chest and is greeted by a plethora of salaciously illustrated magazines, some of them smuggled (Sexy, Hot, Sweaty Mechanics Monthly, Stallions Illustrated, Ultra Hardcore Penetration DX), and some obviously hand-drawn and written in Gongalla (Cunt, Uooh, Wardens of Gongalla Undressed, I Can't Believe My Cellmate is This Cute, Goblin Fever). It's a pervert's treasure trove, and yet most of them have only minimal amounts of sticky pages. You have a feeling Petunia would have liked all of these. "You sure the Necrologue is in here?"
"The only place those religious types won't look into... thoroughly, at least."
>>
>>4952504
And there it is, the Necrologue, rising up from the mass of smutty publications like some kind of saint between the lepers. You hope it doesn't catch the stickiness of its less sanctified brethren. Then again, you may nab some of these other literature for future use. Or to bait Petunia with, maybe.
"Why do you need that thing, anyways?" Pedro asks, now en-shorted. "Neither of us could do the ritual of reading since there's no lifewater between the two of us. So why do you even need the Necrologue?"
Well, kid got a point, there.

>I don't think we should get a magazine, though. There are better ways to trick people, and also the last thing Petunia needs while recovering from her 'issue' is a porn book.

Additionally, carrying any of those things around is just bad taste. Regardless, it's time to get the hell out of here. Speed is of the essence. We'll have to have Pedro grab only anything he deems essential and that won't slow him down.

"Leverage. People are after this relic, right? Well, those people might also know how to get out of here. Out of Gongalla." You answer as you put the Necrologue in your inventory.
"So you want an escape, huh?" Pedro is perceptive.
"More or less. Haven't found a reason to stay." Your eyes wander back to the pile of porn, finding the one titled 'I Can't Believe My Cellmate is This Cute' to be a curiosity. You quickly skim through the thin comic, finding the slow romance endearing. Each tease is coupled with characterization and an emotional moment, leading up to a satisfying climax of catharsis-fueled consummation. You were apparently too engrossed in reading that you barely just heard Pedro whistling loudly.

You can't take them both at the same time, so you even the odds. Thankfully sombreroblin's trajectory makes it easier, as your balled-up right hand collides with his face in a spectacular fashion. His buddy with the ushanka, however, managed to land on your back and immediately goes for a chokehold. Pedro had also maneuvered himself somewhere behind you, either trying to sneak out or about to launch a surprise attack. At the same time, since you are also nearby the closet ceiling hole, you can hear your pursuers from outside getting in the closet. Gaah! The annoying ushanka goblin must go, so you grab his shirt - and try to slam him onto Pedro. He's too quick, however, and the ushanka goblin gets a back full of ceiling-top. How could Pedro even dodge that?! It seems that Pedro was trying to grab something from your back, but the untimely goblin-fall interrupted him. Just what is he trying to do? In any case, it seems that he's trying to do it again - but a movement behind you has caught his eye.

Is this fight even worth our time? Pedro has turned against us despite our intentions of helping him out with that ritual. >□ Yell for the Sister to catch Pedro while you prepare to jump over the hole

I said it more than once last thread and I'll stick with my gut on this one: I bet those two nuns will be extremely forgiving toward Pedro, especially since he's just a child. They seem like rather passive and understanding types (like real-life nuns, I suppose).

I imagine throwing the last goblin at him will result in some bull like the goblin recovering and rolling away with Pedro or something. Hopefully if we can get ahold of him one more time, the nuns can help us with that damn muscle man and the imp, and we can figure out what to do with Pedro. I like our chances of helping the nuns out since they still probably believe we're more or less friendly with them.
>>

"Sister! Grab him!" You yell, as time seem to slow down. Sister Beryl, however, hoists herself up as if normal, and stands directly in front of Pedro, arms open. You almost jumped for Pedro, but thankfully you half-stumble forward instead when you saw him colliding softly with the Sister of the Eternal End.
"Ack! W-what??" Pedro fumbles as Beryl's arms go in for a gentle hug.
"There you are, you naughty boy! Did you learn anything new?" Beryl's soothing voice scrapes by in a low coo towards Pedro. Meanwhile, Pedro's angsty, edgy demeanor melts under the careful yet firm hug of Beryl.
Looks like Pedro could be safely contained now, but then Beryl turns your way. "Good to see you, Mr. James. It seems that both of us thought to check this place before our rendezvous at Goblinton, am I correct?"

That punch was timed right, so it gives you enough momentum to get hurled towards the free-falling imp.
"What in tarnation-?"
Arm outreached, you grab her tail and collide with her mid-air, but the imp is now nestled within your grapple. While you got the Necrologue, the fact remains that the hard part's coming: sticking the landing.

It's going to hurt, no two ways about it, so you hug the imp in a protective embrace and brace for impact. As much as you'd like to pummel her, the safety of the Necrologue comes first. Thankfully you managed to fit your head between her horns safely before you hit the ground, bouncing up and over Sister Beryl and Pedro who wisely retreated back down the hole. The ceiling floor's coming up again, and this time you managed to roll a bit before coming to a stop. Your bruised and scratched body stubbornly stood up, and retrieve the book from a very dizzy but unharmed imp. Thanks to that maneuver, there's some distance between you and the thug.

Woe to him, however, since you immediately throw his unconscious partner straight at him, hitting him squarely in the face. A stream of unintelligible swearing radiate from the muscular man as you make your exit through where Sister Beryl made her egress with Pedro.
"Is everything alright? Who is that chasing you?" Sister Beryl asks, while cradling a calm Pedro in her arms.
"I have no idea, but they said they're from the Dead Numbers." You say, short of breath. "Anyway, no time to talk. That thug seems to be faster than he looks, and I still have your book. So, any idea on where to rendezvous and do the exchange?"

"We did agree to meet back in Goblinton, after all. Let's keep our promise." With that, Sister Beryl grabs Pedro under her arm and ran with you.
"Ack, not again!" Pedro moans exasperatedly.
"Sister Delarue should be there by now, along with Gobson, Petunia and the Warden you rescued. There's a lot more things I want to talk with you, also about Pedro's fate, but let's save it when we're in Goblinton." Beryl informs you during your run.
"I see. Thanks for the info."
"Let's take different paths to Goblinton, just in case we're being followed." She nods, and then took a fork in between the cubicles. You hope Pedro doesn't try anything rash.
After some time, you begin noticing a rapid thudding noise somewhere behind you. You almost thought that there is some sort of jury-rigged car or motorcycle following you, but as you glance back you recognize the juicy yellow polish of the mannequin you kicked out of the closet.
"Hey! Halt for me! You seem to have my moniker!" Her arms and legs swung so fast, you only see motion blurs where they're supposed to be. She's rapidly gaining on you. In moments, she might even catch up to you.

The mannequin seemed to think for a moment before replying. "Adequate. Let us hope your phonetics are solid."
You wondered if Sister Beryl and Pedro managed to reach Goblinton, and so you mentally mapped the area to collect your thoughts. As you ran from the northeast, you noticed something peeking out of the sea of cubicles roughly north of you - upon closer inspection, it's a man with a pair of binoculars, which is pointed towards Goblinton. Sure smells like trouble, but then again he seems engrossed in his surveillance.

Questions that for the moment you have to ignore. Although it takes a bit longer for you to arrive to Goblinton, at least the mannequin is really silent throughout the journey.
>>
>>4971415
Thankfully, both of you reached Goblinton without any more incidents. The mannequin is still silent, until you stop at Nanna's hut. "Is this your hotel?" It asks.
"...of a sort, yes. Maybe closer to a homestay I'm staying in." As you went inside, you're greeted with a familiarly cramped ensemble. The Warden, asleep in the middle, is surrounded by people: the Crossbone Sisters, holding a sitting Pedro down. Gobson and Nanna, who seem to have just finished some sort of treatment on the Warden. And then, the refreshing visage of Petunia.
"James! You're back! Why did you take so lo- wait, who is this?" She squints her eyes aggressively towards the dummy.

Petunia's cheeks blossom into a bit of pink in close proximity to your attention. "O-oh, okay, handsome. So she's looking for a name, huh? How did that happen?"
So, you regale the room with what had happened after you split at the observatory room, to events in Pedro's lair and the way back. Then Petunia told her side of the story; how she and Gobson met with Sisters Beryl and Delarue, and how they had carry the Warden all the way to Goblinton because the Sisters went to check on something. As the story comes to a close, Sister Beryl pipes up.
"That reminds me, Mister James, we need to talk about Pedro's fate. While the Codex Humerus told us to forgive and forget so that we are pure in our bones, the fact remains that Pedro has stolen from us, and that a punishment is necessary for Pedro's own sake." She turns to Delarue, who nods. "And we are also curious about your own intent with the Necrologue. You did have it in your possesson before you handed it back to us."
"Hold on, dearies, I do believe there are more pressing matters!" Nanna interjects. "You did say something about the two Dead Numbers snooping around here, as well as the mysterious humanlike thing keeping watch over Goblinton. Could you recount them in detail please, dearie? Sister Beryl quips. "Every name is usually a prayer, something a parent would hope for the child to have. Maybe something like Mary or Maria?"
"Hmm, doesn't feel like it, though. Maybe I'll name her after someone I knew." You say, riffing through years and years of nostalgia. "Then again, she reminds me of this girl I looked up to, when I was a kid."
Petunia perks up. "You were a kid once?"
"Yeah, but living as a street orphan was not that good. Then, one day, I met Sierra. She was the one who cared for the orphans at our street, and she's also the one who taught me activism. This dummy here shared her stubbornness, I guess."
The dummy, who had been silent and motionless since she sat down, spoke. "Sierra. Sierra. Mountain. Feminine. This is acceptable. Quite unlike my old moniker, yet refreshing."
"Right, that's one thing down. So, about the Dead Numbers and that binocular guy..." you then proceed to describe the Dead Numbers you encountered, as well as what you had seen of the binocular guy. Nanna seem to be perturbed by the binocular guy's description, more than the Dead Numbers'. "Military cap and military binoculars? That must be the Black Badges. Why are they even here? Their base is far away, and we goblins don't have anything to do with them." Nanna explained. "Well, I'll warn the town tomorrow, I guess. It's getting late, stay a while for supper, won't you dearies?"
"The gesture is appreciated, Nanna. Now, Pedro, promise me you'll behave and stay put for me?"

Sister Beryl gladly answers. "Hmm. Good question! If we go by scripture, the Carpal Passages tell us that thieves should have one of their hands deboned. But then again, Pedro is still a child-"
"Excuse me, I'm about to be nineteen soon!" Pedro interrupts.
You stare incredulously. "What-"
"Time's a bit fucked up for veterans like me. I guess it's from all the transport between universes we had to do." Pedro says, in between slurping stew.
"Language! So, do you really want to get your hand deboned? Because the alternative is getting spanked fifty times, and then getting mandatory scripture sessions until behavior improves."
"N-no." Pedro says, realizing he had dug his own grave. "I'll have the spanking."
"Very well. We'll start the sentence once we're safely back in the Ossuary." Sister Beryl seem to shove her food right behind her mask. "By the way, what did you intend to do with the Necrologue, James?"
"Honestly? Leverage, mostly. Such a wanted book, sought after by people who might know a way out of here."

As Sierra immediately heads toward the smallest room, you informed the Sisters before they, too, went down to their room. "I don't know how reliable his word is, but he did say he wanted to find out if his brothers survived the Eternal Empire's wars or not, and that's why he stole the book. Just to let you know."
"The info is appreciated." With that, they, too, went down the ladder.

"Promise? That'd be quite a progress for you."

You lay down as Petunia removes her glasses, and you hug her from behind. "Come here, you. You earned this hug."
Petunia giggles. "O-ooh, James, you cad. You almost gave me a heart attack!"
"Then what about this?" A quick peck lands on the nape of her neck, and elicits a trembling moan from Petunia.
"Y-you naughty boy, James!" Yet another giggle let loose. "Tell me, were you like this since you were a kid?"
"Come to think of it, maybe I was. I never knew my parents, my earliest memories were at the orphanage. Roamed the streets for some time, until I met Sierra. I remember learning new games from her, like Brick the Pig, for one." Ah yeah, you remember a particularly good shiner you gave an Enforcer. "I also remember hanging out on the rooftops, looking at the stars when they start to appear. Sierra taught me some of their names and constellations. I guess stargazing became my hobby." You lean close to Petunia's ear. "How about you? What's your hobby?"
"W-well... I did tell you about me writing fanfiction, right? I also read a lot of novels, and I drew sometimes too."
"You draw? Well, I'd like to see you draw, sometime."
"Hehe, it's not that good, though." She yawns. "Let's stay like this until we wake up, handsome."
The clarion call of sleep also dawns upon you. "Then we shall, Petunia, we shall."
Soon enough, you feel Petunia's slumbering rythms on your own breaths. Right before you sleep, though, you think about what you want to do in the morning.

I'll bet the black badges are both better equipped and have way more resources than the dead numbers. They're the real threat.
>>

>they sent a scout for GOBLINTON, not us.

Ten bucks says that they're after Petunia and/or Pedro. Since one of Pedro's brothers is with them, he's undoubtedly looking for both of them. He'll know Petunia was likely here or near here due to Frank. Whether or not they know if she's still here, or if they know of Pedro being here too, is up in the air. We might be able to hide and wait things out until they screw off. Then again, they might be more determined than that.

There's also a chance they're after the warden. We need to interrogate her as soon as possible. We also need to guard her like she's worth her weight in gold. Her knowledge, authority, and power are invaluable to us, and she'll probably be unable to protect herself for a while at least. A bullet wound to the torso isn't something you can get over very easily.
>>

>Ten bucks says that they're after Petunia and/or Pedro.
I doubt it, they wouldn't have just sent a scout with a binoculars then. They'd have someone to ask around. In my opinion, it's something more. They were watching the city. Not us, but Goblinton

We might be speaking about 'politics' here. They might be after somethng the goblins have.
>>
>>4977335
If that IS the case, then obviously we need to find out what could be special enough about Goblinton to warrant their attention. Besides, who knows how many scouts they had? Just because we only saw one doesn't mean there was only one. For every hidden enemy you spot there are two you don't.

Morning comes, and you awake with a slightly sore arm and dignity intact - Petunia kept her promise. She's already upstairs eating breakfast, and you join her. Then you remember what you were about to do today. "Hey, Petunia, I'm gonna go counter-scout the Black Badges, wanna come?"
She smiles. "Of course, handsome! Just try to not get into too much trouble."
"No promises on that." You smirk, and Petunia giggles.
An hour or so later, you're back at the scout's position, taking a wide arc to the south so you don't get seen. The cyborg scout is still there, but now there is also a woman in a gas mask as well. They're discussing things you can't hear from this range, and the woman makes pointing gestures towards Goblinton every once in a while. Looks like they're really engrossed in talking that the scout is taking off his binoculars off Goblinton. You might have an opportunity to do something here.

Usualy you don't listen to authority figures, but this is the exception. You put a finger over your mouth in a sign for 'quiet' at Petunia, and then point towards the two scouts. Thankfully Petunia understood, and replies with a curt nod. Slowly but steadily, both of you slink closer towards the scouts - but you don't drop your guard. Because, you remember from your revolutionary days, there's no way that those two are the only ones here. Ex-Enforcers and ex-military types tend to send out more than just a couple dudes in hostile territory - and your hunch was proven correct as a huge, dome-headed cyborg walks nearby, thankfully unaware of your presence. Carefully, you managed to sneak close enough to the two scouts, and listen.
"... would be quick, c'mon, please, Tristan?" The lady sounds frustrated.
"Negative. Our orders are to observe and notify the Boss when primary target: Petunia is seen. Non-mission parameters are irrelevant."
"Oh come on! Those boogers are just sitting there doing whatever their booger brains want, and we're sitting here doing nothing! We could have subjugated them by now!"
"Negative. Go back to your post, Sarida. You can subjugate in your downtime. Alone."
"Why you- tsk, fiiine. At least ask the Boss or Overwatch for clarification, maybe?"
"Acknowledged. Additional info: this will be in your review. Be more like Harvey and follow orders." The scout cyborg then taps his antenna. "Overwatch, come in. Requesting clarification of mission parameters." The cyborg then stood still for a moment. "Acknowledged. Sending coordinates of current location." "Repeat order, Overwatch?" "Acknowledged." The cyborg then turns towards his friend. "It seems that our target had just left Goblinton."
"Tsk, just my luck. Overwatch said where?"
"Negative. Wait until Harvey completes patrol, then continue with a widening search pattern."
Uh oh, sounds like trouble.

Now, I'm not trying to be that guy—and I know I really shouldn't say I told you so—but I told you so.

>Wait, where's the third black badge at?

What we need to do now is fucking split. We've got just as much information as we need. The key now is not being spotted. To that end, we slither our way back to Goblinton, gather up Gobson and the warden, and leave. I say this even though I know the third man is about to reveal us.

Assuming we aren't spotted, we can't hang around in the open in Goblinton for too long. They could easily already have people in there looking for us. Just because we don't see any Black Badges in the town doesn't mean they couldn't have easily paid off a goblin to look for us or divulge some information. Odds are very high they'll find out we're here soon enough (if they already haven't). So time is of the essence.

You can hear the disdain in the other scout's voice. "Tch, killjoy. Just you wait, Goblinton's going to be under the Black Badges' boot by next week, if I had my way."
Good, keep quarreling among yourself. But listening to them for that brief moment is enough distracton, you realize, when a feeling of something big and heavy approaches from a distance. The orb-headed cop seem to be locked in a choice paralysis by the way he kept looking at you, and at the fallen cubicle where his comrades are under. So you make the choice for him by scooping Petunia up in a bridal carry and hightail it towards Goblinton. One of his scout friends, presumably the one called Sarida, managed to partially crawl out from the cubic wreck. "IMBECILE! They're running! Go after them!" Thankfully, the orb-headed oaf is already busy trying to lift the debris. Soon enough, the commotion fades away with distance as you get closer towards Goblinton. "Um, thanks for the save back there, handsome." Petunia finally spoke.
"Ah, no problem. But you did hear what they said, right? Any idea why you're their target?"
Petunia thinks for a moment. "No... no idea. Besides, I'm not the only one they're after."
The both of you dash through the cubicle farms until Goblinton could be seen in the distance. Oh, what's this? Seems like the goblins are busy making barricades, reinforcing walls, and practicing drills.

You hadn't realized it, but you've bridal carried Petunia all the way to Goblinton. "Well, whatever the reason, I'm not letting them get you just like that." You let her down onto the floor gently once you've stepped into the periphery of the town. "Let's report to Nanna and see what's gonna happen."
A quick trip to her hut and a brief recap of what happened later, and Nanna's sitting there, eyes wide open. "Oh dearie me, oh dear. Those Black Badges could be real persistent. I suggest you keep Petunia, Pedro and the book together for the time being."
Petunia, who've been sniffing your hair to calm down, suggests otherwise. "Don't keep your eggs in one basket, or something like that."
Nanna then prods you to go outside. "Very well, let us discuss this, then. You can go help make barricades and reinforcing points. Gobson, be a dear and call the Crossbones Sisters here, please?"
"Okay, Nanna!" You exit her hut as Gobson did. "Ey guv, I hear you're gonna build stuff, aite? Well me mates found some spots in sore need o' guidance. There's the border parts of Goblinton proper, where the cubicles are sparse. There's also the road to and around the Goblin Bazaar, lotsa open space around em. And there's also the huts themselves, while most have tunnels, they're literally made o' clay, mud and ceiling stuff. Just go to a site and start workin', the gobs there'll not bat an eye. You look around at the huts around you. It's true, most of them are made of clay and mud, but actually they're made from a frame of sticks covered with ceiling insulation stuff, which then were held in place with clay and mud. The same were applied to the insides, too. The doorways are low enough that you need to crawl to enter, but the overall construction of the huts is really easy to break. Some reinforce their huts with magic, wrtten into seals. But, there are a warren of tunnels underneath each hut, that sometimes doesn't correlate with topside topography due to the fluxy nature of the ground. You ask a passing gobbo, "What's the most common resource around here?"
"There's plenty of mud and clay and sticks, tallboi. Some of us also make our own booze, so there's plenty of stills to go around. What we don't have a lot of, though, are metal things."
Hmmm. This means that you could make Revoluton Spirits, which are crude firebombs. Might have limited success, though, if the enemy has more metallic cyborgs in their midst. On the other hand, tunnel combat tactics might generally work more often.

You opt not to make Revolution Spirits, since it's more likely to backfire and burn down Goblnton instead. You don't know that much magic either, not being a magic user yourself. So you decide to tell the goblins about tunnel fighting tactics.
"Everyone who want to learn how to fight in tunnels, come here!" You announce yourself.
"Hah, we already knew how, we live in them!" A passing goblin remarks.
You smile. "But do you know how to fight in tunnels... against cyborgs and robots?"
"Oh, uh... well, go on?" He stops to listen.
You expound on making smaller goblin-sized side passages, with some thin walls where wooden pikes could be thrust from. And of underground mud pits that would entrap those careless enough to fall into them. Of how you should aim for the joints, and use nets, ropes and sticky stuff to immobilize them. Maybe even making decoy huts where they could trap the enemy in. By the end of your short lecture, a small crowd has gathered around you. "If you understood that, spread this knowledge around. Every goblin should know." You look around among your listeners. "Now, any of you got a shovel? Let's make more tunnels!"
With a cheer, the crowd dispersed, and some immediately gets to work. A goblin hands you a big spoon. "Cheers, tallboi. You know stuff, and willing to work with us gobbos to help Goblinton. Much 'preciated."

The soil here feels solid above, but below it is quite easy to tunnel through. You figured you've done about a residential blocks' worth of tunnels when a frantic-looking goblin pokes his head into the newly erected fake hut you're digging a mud pit in. "Message from Nanna, scouts see movement of the enemy from northeast. Nanna needs you at her hut for battle meeting, tallboi."
Looks like they've started their move.

>Harass them with hit and run tactics
Negotiation is surrender. Goblins are small targets and quick. A small force to harry the enemy on their approach and soften them up is a good idea. It should wear out the enemy's cohesion, and force them to slow down, allowing a bit more time to set up traps. In addition, moving out to do a hit and run attack will let us know about what we're up against before they get into town.

You arrive at Nanna's hut to find everybody assembled around a crude battle-map. You even see the liquor vendor beside Nanna. "Alright, I'm here. What's the situation?"
Nanna produces a slip of paper with a crown drawn on it. "Alright, dearies, let's get this meeting started. Goblin scouts report a small force of five Black Badges had started moving towards our town, from here." She moves the paper from the northwest. "The gobbos say they see three bots and two humans. What do you suggest?"
You raise your hand, and Nanna nods. "I think we should send a messenger to do talks, find out what they want. But, we shadow the messenger with five stealthy goblins of our own, in case they don't want to talk. In that case, we do hit and run attacks, wear them down and stall for time until we can get defenses and traps up."
"Hmm, very well. We'll send for five goblins to do that."
"If I may, Nanna?" Sister Beryl asks. "Since they're after Petunia and the Necrologue, me and Delarue would like to protect them in the city. While the Black Badges are ex-Enforcers and soldiers, they might not be above playing dirty."
"True, there's also those two Dead Numbers still at large." Petunia pipes up.

You clap your hands. "Right, so that's three for the hit and run squad, anyone else want to volunteer?" From the crowd of goblins outside, two got in fast enough. "Alright. We've got our duties. I'll stay and help the defense of the town. The Sisters guard Petunia and the book, Sierra is the messenger, Gobson lookout, and stealth squad follow Sierra unseen, ready to attack if Sierra's attacked. Eveeybody fine with that?" The only objection was a half-hearted mumble from Pedro.
With battle on the horizon, the meeting disperses, and everyone went to their designated tasks.

You are Petunia Karachova, and right now you're sitting inside a magical protection circle made from bonemeal with the nuns from the Church of the Eternal End, or otherwise known as the Crossbones. Six candles light up the area, which is located in one of the many storage rooms under the Goblin Market. If it weren't for the impending battle above, you'd think it's the perfect occasion to tell scary stories.
"So uh, h-how do you do, S-sisters? We haven't really talked much to each other, haven't we? Heheh, he." You try to break the ice.
"Indeed, miss Petunia, we haven't. Sister Delarue here agrees." Sister Beryl replies curtly.
"Just glad we moved the Warden under Nanna's hut before the meeting. James and I have a lot of questions to ask her."
"Oh, what a coincidence! We also have a lot of questions, but aimed at you."
"W-what? Me?"
"You see, during our time together with Pedro, he tells a lot of stories about you. And his brothers. But mostly about you. Most are... unsavory, to say the least. So we want to know the other side's story, if you would."
Oh. You have a guess to where this leads.

"...You know what? I really was that despicable and perverted, back then. I'm not going to lie or make it pretty - nor will I blame my childhood for me turning out the way I am. Getting bullied because of my visage shouldn't be an excuse. Getting rejected harshly in my youth shouldn't have thrown me this low. It was me, escaping into fiction and blinding myself to the barrier between fantasy and reality, that drove me to do the things I did. I abused my station to corrupt those young boys... those sweet, innocent, innocent! Pure boys! Unlike me..." You stifle a cry. "And because of me, those sweet, kind boys have seen things they shouldn't. I regret it, I truly am. If I hadn't met James Calaca in the Gaol, I would probably still continue my depredations. But he, he showed me kindness and decency, and, and, and..." Tears well up behind your glasses. "I guess I finally found true love, and a way to repent. Or rehabilitation."
The Sisters were silent. But then, Beryl slowly claps. "You are sincere in this, aren't you?"
You nod, tears starting to drizzle down your cheeks. "If I can help those boys and James, even for a bit, I can make peace with myself."
"Very well. We can help you. At least, in taking a bit of the edge off. You may recall that Sister Delarue here can track and read objects by touch, right? Well, actually she could also read minds, albeit weakly. This, combined with my own talents, allows us to delve into your mind and put a geas on you - if you're willing, that is."
"A... geas?"
"Just an oath, enforced with magic, in case you feel the... 'urge' irresistable. It's what most of us do in the Ossuary to keep chaste. Be warned, though, we will shift our consciousness into the astral realm for a moment, so you might see... things."

You mull it over for a bit. "Thanks for the offer, but... no, thanks. This is my albatross to bear. I feel as if I should do this my own way, or else I'd just end up worse than before. Still, it's good to know that there's still people who wants to care for me, like you two." You wipe your tears away.
"Well spoken. Know that the Church of the Eternal End's doors are always open to you, Petunia, whether it be confession or conversation." Sister Beryl, you imagine, is smiling under that mask.
Suddenly, Sister Delarue's body language stiffens, even more so than her usual stoicity - and she looks around the storage room. At the same time, you became aware of a faint sound behind you, like a coin rolling slowly getting louder and turning into the sound of a sword being taken out of its sheath. Almost at the same time, the three of you look behind your shoulders, and see something akin to a sigil writing itself on the floor.
"What the - to be clear, that's not either of you doing it, right?" You ponder aloud.
Beryl and Delarue, alert written across their faces, shook their head slowly. Then you remember, you still have the magitek cards in your inventory from when you were exploring the abandoned observation room. Rataplan, rataplan, the sigil is almost closing. Rataplan, rataplan.

With no time to waste, you thought you'll hinder that sigil by throwing a crate on it - it feels too similar to a summoning sigil. With a leap and a swift grab, you throw the crate nearest to it, obscuring the sigil as it traces. But who's this, hidden behind the very crate you just used? You leap back in surprise. "Who?!"
The bald, muscularly mustachioed man who was sitting behind the crate was as surprised as you are. "Err, I am hidink?"
Wait, haven't James told you he encountered such an agent of the Dead Numbers? But as you recoiled from the bald man, the sigil has completed itself. A burst of pinkish-purple light flashes throughout the storeroom, accompanied by a sound akin to a thick sheet of space-time being ripped asunder.
>>
>>4995176
As the curtain of magical energy dissipates, you realize that your gambit was for naught - it was no ordinary teleportation sigil. Instead of just transporting a single object onto existing space, this particular sigil swaps any and everything that is within its space! This is very evident on the crate you just thrown, and on the very ground itself being different from the goblin storeroom's.
But far more alarming is the fact that there is someone within the circle. Who is that? Metallic synthetic skin glistens in the afterglow.
"My, my, my, my, my. What a reception! I know, I know, there's about to be a flare-up of hostilities and nerves are running high, but that shouldn't stop us from being civil, myes?"
That voice, it can't be -
"Awestruck at my new physical iteration, Petunia dear? Well, I had to promise the Black Badges to help them acquire some things to get it. Which, I believe, those Crossbones nuns have it, myes?"
It's Frank. And he's working with the Black Badges.

Vote if you like the story!
>>
>>4995501
That entirely depends on you, the audience. I'll even do the most SFW non-fade-to-black lovin' scene if the votes swing that way.

Also unrelated, but pic is a possibility if we chose to be a girl in our very first vote. Jemima Calaca and Patridge Karachov, everybody.
Then again, Patridge's backstory would have become three times creepier.

>>
>>4997326
They do. It's something about the designs that make them look like weird people. Especially Patridge, with the hair. Petunia feels normal and good in her sleek, thin body shape. Patridge looks like a weirdo. Which he would be, but it's a different kind of weirdo.
