Poya and Aletha had only met at the party the night before; they did have a lot in common, though. They were both Alcadnists, they were both freshmen at Mothwood College, and they both had a little creature following them around.

That was actually the icebreaker that Poya used; she had Ambergris, the rowdy little winged homunculus, while Aletha had Puck, the newly-hatched dragon. Both were menaces, of course; Puck especially. However, the four of them had collectively gotten along well enough for them to sign up for the big, yearly dungeon crawl; Ambergris took up their third spot because of a rule involving homunculi having to register as entrants. (A year or two before there had been a problem with a winning team delegating their strategy to about a dozen homunculi.)

The two of them weren’t really making a huge effort to win; they were sauntering through the dungeon at a comfortable pace, leaving Puck and Ambergris to take care of most of the fighting while they chatted about all the other students. They mostly complained about the bad-boy Xander Vayne and all his friends, and chirped happily as they talked about the very cute and dorky, bespectacled Cedric Wyrmtail.

It was a fairly relaxing morning event for Ms. Murgleib; just taking the creatures for a walk together with her best friend.

Welcome back, everyone; please consider the following.
>Feel free to write in responses, or add more details to an existing response. They’re mostly meant to be suggestions/jumping off points. You can also ask out-of-character questions whenever you’d like, and receive answers that seem suitable based on your character’s knowledge.
>Combat rules will be posted during the first combat of the thread. Character sheets will be posted then as well, but you can ask for them whenever; either for characters actively in your party, or anyone you’re sufficiently close with.

Unfortunately, you were not Poya; you were Griff, and what you were going through was slightly more pulse-raising.

With your back pressed firmly against an old bookshelf, mildewy particles falling from it whenever you jostled it even slightly, you kept turning your gaze from the stairway to the monster lurking on the ceiling. You clenched your fists; you could feel the material of your alchemy gloves digging in between your fingers.

You weren’t totally sure if it was the stress, or if you had a collapsed rib from your fall earlier; either way, there was a sharp pain in your chest whenever you inhaled. Not good.
All at once, in a cacophony of noise, the barricade you had built in front of the stairway exploded into scraps of paper and clouds of dust. The two thugs that you had nearly lost marched into the room; thankfully, they looked a little worse for wear, probably from monsters that they encountered while on your heels.

BATTLE!

You can suggest an action for one character, or a series of actions for the entire team. Sensibility and support will be considered for which suggestions are chosen. If rules ever need clarification, or additional rules are introduced, that battle rules document will be updated to reflect them.

Griff has an action, what do you do?

So what happened to the monster on the ceiling? Did the noise scare it off, or can we get it to attack the thugs?

Griff casts Bother on the closer of the two thugs, inflicting him with daze! Motes of light blue Noct aspected magic coalesce around his head, distracting him!

The first of the Zeth Thugs attempts to cast Wrack on Griff, but fails due to daze!

The second of the Zeth Thugs casts Excise, but misses! Griff inhales sharply in relief; Excise was Wrack’s bigger, badder older brother.

--

Griff has 5/8 health remaining, and 2/3 flux. He’s a bit beat up from his fall.

Both Zeth Thugs look mildly hurt. The first Zeth Thug is dazed.

Though focused on the battle, Griff cannot help but regularly glance towards the vaulted ceiling above. The large, angry monster crawls over the panels on the ceiling and down into the bookshelves, lurking nearby.

+1 this. Also, QM, it might not be a bad idea to post a couple of combat choices in your posts just to make things smoother.

Very fair, I didn't want to influence things too much with my insider knowledge but I might try that.

Update soon; sorry about the very un-dynamic combat art. Fight-ey poses are definitely something I want to make for at least the main cast, soon.

Griff casts Wrack for 4 damage! The thug clutches his chest and doubles over as a runic circle wraps around him. He glances up towards Griff in discontent as a trickle of blood drips from his nose.

The first Thug, still dazed, balls his fists and cracks Griff with a reckless haymaker for 1 damage.

The second Thug, wounded, takes a moment to focus and expel the flux that casting Excise brought on. With a gentle grunt, he stands up straight.

--

Griff has 4/8 health remaining, and 3/3 flux. He’s looking a bit green around the gills; or more purple, in this case.

The first Zeth Thug is no longer dazed. The second Thug is looking quite injured.

Clouds of paper mildew are roused from the shelves as the ground rattles; the creature only an aisle over and grabbing onto any piece of furniture it can reach to pull itself along. Griff made extra-sure that if it happened to climb over a bookshelf, it would see the thugs first.

>You’re looking hurt, and full on flux. You have items that could fix the former, and both an item and the focus action could fix the latter.
>>
>>5056735
Alright casting a spell now would send us into maximum overflux, which is a shame because I wanted to finish thug 2 off before we got 2v1'd

I guess lets down some pulpy nostrum, hope our trait kicks in and we don't get Excised.

We just gotta play the waiting game for that monster to attack them, that's when we run away

Griff pulls a vial of pulpy nostrum from his pocket and quaffs it, recovering 5 health! Though, he only recovers 4, because his maximum is 8. All the while, he very visibly tries not to gag; he could not believe for even an instant that there was a type of person who preferred pulp to sans pulp.

The first Zeth Thug casts Wrack! This time, successfully, for 3 damage.

The second Zeth Thug prepares to cast a spell, but is bowled over by the slippery yellow monster; it disappears back behind a bookshelf, but not before putting both Griff and the remaining, conscious, thug on guard.

--

Griff has 5/8 health remaining, and 1/3 flux.

The remaining Zeth Thug looks a bit bewildered, but not any worse for wear.

Flakes of plaster fall gently from the ceiling as a commotion brews on the floor above.

>People (hopefully Wes and Krieg) are close; hopefully they’ll help when they arrive, but you were pretty sure you could take on this ruffian now that it’s one-on-one.

>>5059890
oh thank you nameless monster
seriously the pulp is that bad?

ah well, time for a Wrack battle

+1 to this. Monster comin' in clutch!
>>
>>5059890
could we get out of here? If we still want to win we cant get sidetracked for too long, and this guy is probably going to prioritize helping his comrade out over coming after us.
>>
>>5060687

In this scenario, yeah, you could probably make an attempt to escape; but I'd want to know what some of the other players think first.

Aren't we in the winning spot, or close to it? I think we want to stay here until our buds catch up

Hey everyone, still alive. A bit hung over today but hopefully I can finally get another post in. Sorry yet again for the infrequent updates, believe me I'm still very much interested in running this, I just need to find the time.
>>
>>5067233
Silver lining is it's really easy to keep up with the quest lol.
>>
Hi all! Sorry for the less-than-stellar news, but I'm officially putting a pin in this for the time being. I would love to, and certainly plan to, coming back to it in the not-so-far future, but I simply don't have the time or energy to maintain it at the current moment. Thanks for participating so far, though, and I will see you all again likely not long after the turn of the new year!
>>
>>5078580
Sucks to hear, but thanks for letting us know. Was looking pretty promising while it lasted!
>>
Like I said, hopefully I'll be back by the new year; I can give a guarantee that'll it'll be a continuation of this in some form. As dorky as it sounds, I've been thinking about the setting/characters quite a bit and doing a lot of background worldbuilding.

As always, I'll keep my eye on this thread if anyone has any questions, comments or concern. Thanks for everyone's continuing interest.
